Latest / Stugotz and Company / Big Stu-ey: Winning the US Open (w/ Wyndham Clark)
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: The first time we had this man on, he had
- 0:24Speaker 1: no majors. It was right before he won his first
- 0:27Speaker 1: US Open. Mikey remembers, he's shaking his head. Wyndham Clark,
- 0:31Speaker 1: if I took congratulations. By the way, if I told
- 0:33Speaker 1: you then that in twenty twenty six, i'd speak to
- 0:36Speaker 1: you again and you'd be a two tome US Open champion,
- 0:40Speaker 1: you would have told me what it's about.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Right, that's what I hope and dream for. But no,
- 0:49Speaker 2: I mean it's uh, I mean you dream for that,
- 0:52Speaker 2: but for it to come it become reality is you know,
- 0:55Speaker 2: is a different thing.
- 0:56Speaker 3: So it's it's it's pretty special. Man.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Can you explain to us and the audience I played
- 1:01Speaker 1: that course, shinnecock, It's tricky, it's difficult. I shot at
- 1:04Speaker 1: two hundred and I walked away with a smile on
- 1:06Speaker 1: my face. Can you explain to the audience and to
- 1:09Speaker 1: us just how difficult that course is?
- 1:12Speaker 2: I can't say I would smile if I shot two hundred.
- 1:16Speaker 1: You probably would have lost on Sunday, Yes, right.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you need a lot bigger lead.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Yes, no, so it is so challenging.
- 1:26Speaker 2: You know, it was pretty wide off the tee, so
- 1:28Speaker 2: that part wasn't the hardest, you know, granted I missed
- 1:30Speaker 2: a lot of fairways, so didn't make it look that easy.
- 1:33Speaker 2: But the first two days I hit a bunch. It's
- 1:36Speaker 2: really the greens, the greens in the wind. It's you know,
- 1:40Speaker 2: the wind was blown twenty plus sometimes even thirty plus
- 1:43Speaker 2: kind of the whole week. And then you get these
- 1:45Speaker 2: greens that are just diabolical. They have so much slope
- 1:48Speaker 2: and if you miss it goes so far off and
- 1:51Speaker 2: you have such challenging shot. And then the Poeana you know,
- 1:55Speaker 2: in Poeana, if you guys know, especially on the West Coast,
- 1:58Speaker 2: it's bumpy and it's difficult to you know, have a putt,
- 2:00Speaker 2: stay online consistently, and so it just it just makes
- 2:05Speaker 2: for you know, max stress while you're playing. You might
- 2:09Speaker 2: hit a great shot in there and you can walk
- 2:11Speaker 2: away with bogie, or you hit a great chip and
- 2:13Speaker 2: you might miss, or you might three put multiple holes
- 2:16Speaker 2: in a row.
- 2:16Speaker 3: So it's it's so difficult.
- 2:18Speaker 4: Do you prefer when the course is that difficult, or
- 2:21Speaker 4: like where only so many people are even below par?
- 2:24Speaker 1: Or do you like when you're all chasing the same numbers?
- 2:27Speaker 3: You know what's funny is.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I mean, yes, I've always preferred tougher and prior to
- 2:32Speaker 2: win in the CJ Cup this year. I mean I
- 2:34Speaker 2: hardly ever shoot in the twenties. I've maybe shot twenty
- 2:38Speaker 2: under less than like eight times in my career, and
- 2:41Speaker 2: then I shot thirty under. So normally I'm like, I
- 2:44Speaker 2: don't really don't have much of a chance in those
- 2:46Speaker 2: events because I I'm kind of a guy that shoots
- 2:48Speaker 2: a lot of four to six hunders and sometimes goes
- 2:50Speaker 2: super low. But yeah, I prefer I love when you
- 2:54Speaker 2: have to really think in all parts of your game
- 2:57Speaker 2: has to be utilized, and especially the short game. You know,
- 3:00Speaker 2: that's really where I excel is getting the ball up
- 3:03Speaker 2: and down, making clutch putts, having good speed on lag puts,
- 3:06Speaker 2: et cetera. So I do prefer kind of the major
- 3:09Speaker 2: style golf for or when courses are super tough.
- 3:12Speaker 5: When I'm curious the wire to wire win, Like take
- 3:15Speaker 5: me through the mentality of that, like at what point
- 3:18Speaker 5: are you recognizing where you're at? At what point does
- 3:20Speaker 5: the stress start to come in?
- 3:22Speaker 1: And then when you.
- 3:22Speaker 5: Complete it, it's just like what what is the mentality there?
- 3:25Speaker 5: And just however, you know, satisfying that is.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, after what, this is my eighth season
- 3:32Speaker 2: leading the first round. I've I've had a handful of
- 3:35Speaker 2: tournaments where I've done that, so you're just like, all right,
- 3:37Speaker 2: first round. We also didn't get to finish it, so
- 3:39Speaker 2: I had to come back super early. We were up
- 3:42Speaker 2: at four am, so you almost had no time to
- 3:44Speaker 2: even think. And then you know, we finish out Friday
- 3:48Speaker 2: and I end up with four shot lead I believe
- 3:51Speaker 2: going into Saturday or three shot or something, and you know,
- 3:56Speaker 2: and then and then you know.
- 3:57Speaker 3: On Friday night you think about it.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I had a long time before I played in the
- 4:00Speaker 2: afternoon on Saturday, actually super long, and it's more the
- 4:04Speaker 2: anticipation than anything.
- 4:06Speaker 3: You know.
- 4:06Speaker 2: I ended on one pm Friday, and I didn't play
- 4:09Speaker 2: till three forty five, so I had over twenty four hours,
- 4:12Speaker 2: and you just get antsy. You're like, man, I just
- 4:14Speaker 2: want to get out there. I just want to play.
- 4:16Speaker 2: So that's the worst part. But once you get inside
- 4:18Speaker 2: the ropes, you start feeling comfortable and you get exciting
- 4:21Speaker 2: or excited. The biggest struggle for me going from Saturday
- 4:25Speaker 2: Sunday was the fact that I really thought I could
- 4:28Speaker 2: be at ten or eleven or twelve under, and I
- 4:31Speaker 2: was really frustrated that I made some bogies coming in
- 4:35Speaker 2: on fifteen and sixteen, and I made two bogies with
- 4:39Speaker 2: wedges in my hand, and I just look at that
- 4:41Speaker 2: and I'm like, gosh, I could have a nine to
- 4:44Speaker 2: ten shot lead.
- 4:45Speaker 3: And you know, even.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Though I had six shot lead, which is amazing, I
- 4:48Speaker 2: knew I was going to need every shot possible to
- 4:51Speaker 2: try to win on Sunday because it's hard to go
- 4:52Speaker 2: wire to wire, especially against the best player in the
- 4:55Speaker 2: world in a hostile environment.
- 4:57Speaker 1: How much impact did that have on you, The fact
- 4:58Speaker 1: that you were paired with Scott in that final round.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I loved it, you know, Scotty and our buddies, and
- 5:05Speaker 2: I think it's fun because he brings the you know,
- 5:08Speaker 2: the biggest crowds and it just makes it more exciting.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Saturday was kind of weird, to be honest, there that
- 5:16Speaker 2: we started with a lot of fans and then we
- 5:18Speaker 2: ended hardly with any fans the last like five six holes,
- 5:23Speaker 2: and it.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Was kind of yeah, it just was unique.
- 5:26Speaker 2: It didn't have that major feeling maybe on a Saturday
- 5:30Speaker 2: as normal, and then Sunday really felt like that and
- 5:33Speaker 2: part of that's Scottie, and you know everyone was following
- 5:37Speaker 2: us and watching us, and that just makes it more fun.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I love to compete. I played other sports. I love
- 5:42Speaker 2: watching other sports, and you always you always want.
- 5:45Speaker 3: The ball in your hand. You want to be in
- 5:46Speaker 3: the moment, and that's exactly what that was.
- 6:00Speaker 4: I win to My challenge as a golfer is I
- 6:02Speaker 4: let a bad hole keep beating me as I go
- 6:04Speaker 4: on to the next hole. What's the mental challenge of
- 6:07Speaker 4: watching a six shot lead on Sunday shrink to just
- 6:11Speaker 4: a single shot in just five holes.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Well, I mean we've all done it.
- 6:16Speaker 2: We've all.
- 6:17Speaker 3: I mean it's affected me too.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I actually didn't really know it got to a one
- 6:21Speaker 2: shot lead that quickly. I did, let's say, kind of
- 6:27Speaker 2: as we're making the turn, and I started watching the
- 6:30Speaker 2: leaderboard kind of the last five six holes, so I
- 6:33Speaker 2: was trying to not pay attention as much as possible.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Granted I did know things weren't going my way. I
- 6:39Speaker 2: was three over relatively quick, and I'm like, that can't
- 6:42Speaker 2: be good. If anyone's under part at all, this is
- 6:44Speaker 2: a close match, and the fans definitely let me know,
- 6:48Speaker 2: so I yeah, I tried as much as possible to
- 6:51Speaker 2: try to stay in the present moment and worry about myself.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I'm not trying to rationalize bad behavior. I'm just trying
- 6:57Speaker 1: to explain it, and I want to see if you
- 6:58Speaker 1: agree as it relates to the fans, because they were awful.
- 7:01Speaker 1: But fans are awful, that's what they are. What fans
- 7:04Speaker 1: are rooting for in that spot. We don't particularly have
- 7:07Speaker 1: particularly have a favorite golfer, right, We're just rooting for
- 7:10Speaker 1: an exciting end, and you were getting in the way
- 7:12Speaker 1: of an exciting ending and fans wanted to see that.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Is that fair? Is that rationalizing? What am I doing there?
- 7:18Speaker 1: Because I think that's really at the you know, at
- 7:21Speaker 1: the core of why fans are acting the way they act.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Are you from Long Island?
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yes? He actually is.
- 7:30Speaker 3: That question.
- 7:34Speaker 1: They're terrible fans win them. I'm just trying to justify it.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I'm trying to explain it. I mean, I'm just now, Yeah,
- 7:40Speaker 1: you're right, I mean, we're a bunch of assholes out there.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Yeah, no, you know, I there's definitely some of that.
- 7:48Speaker 3: I get it.
- 7:48Speaker 2: You know, if if if the super Bowl someone's up
- 7:51Speaker 2: by twenty some points, it's it loses it's it's team.
- 7:55Speaker 3: So I get some of that, but it's you know, it.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Was unfortunate because I'm trying to do something thing that
- 8:00Speaker 2: is life changing from me and something I've always dreamt of.
- 8:03Speaker 2: But hey, you know what, I embraced it. I loved it.
- 8:07Speaker 2: I love New York. I hope they love me now. Yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 2: but no, that that's pretty funny.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I'm from Long Island. Listen, you have the trophy sitting
- 8:16Speaker 1: right behind you. You're good man, exactly.
- 8:19Speaker 5: I find it funny in these individual sports where you
- 8:21Speaker 5: have this major career accomplishment, but the season keeps going,
- 8:25Speaker 5: and so I'm just wondering, is there anything you do.
- 8:27Speaker 5: Is there anything about once you win a major that
- 8:30Speaker 5: you do differently that you actually let it sink in
- 8:33Speaker 5: somehow celebrate in the course of, you know, the season.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's the hardest thing about golf and
- 8:38Speaker 2: tennis is I mean, I'm playing this week in Connecticut
- 8:42Speaker 2: at the Travelers. You know, it's like you in this
- 8:45Speaker 2: huge major tournament and back inside.
- 8:47Speaker 3: The ropes on Thursday.
- 8:49Speaker 2: But the biggest thing is you kind of wait till
- 8:51Speaker 2: the off season, and so when I'm home, I'll take
- 8:54Speaker 2: it to my home clubs that I play in Arizona
- 8:57Speaker 2: and in Colorado, I'll be with my buddy, will go celebrate.
- 9:01Speaker 2: You bring the trophy everywhere, So that's kind of when
- 9:04Speaker 2: you celebrate. But you know, this one, the first one
- 9:07Speaker 2: I won, I kind of not that I took it
- 9:09Speaker 2: for granted, but I kind of did like I thought, Oh,
- 9:11Speaker 2: I'm now just gonna win a ton, and I kind
- 9:14Speaker 2: of broke through this is gonna happen. And then you realize,
- 9:17Speaker 2: you know, a year goes by, you don't win it,
- 9:19Speaker 2: and then I have a terrible year in twenty five
- 9:21Speaker 2: and you're like, wow, what I did was amazing, and
- 9:24Speaker 2: so to win this the second time, I'm really gonna
- 9:26Speaker 2: cherish this and soak it in and let you know,
- 9:30Speaker 2: just let all those feelings feed my confidence, and you know,
- 9:34Speaker 2: just remember that I've done something that not many people
- 9:36Speaker 2: have done.
- 9:37Speaker 1: It was such a moving moment after you won on
- 9:39Speaker 1: the eighteenth hole, you didn't know your dad was there.
- 9:41Speaker 1: You turn around and there's dad on Father's Day? Can
- 9:44Speaker 1: you put us there? What a special moment for you guys?
- 9:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it was. It was amazing.
- 9:50Speaker 2: You know, my dad hasn't been able to see me
- 9:52Speaker 2: win in person. In a long time, and so for
- 9:55Speaker 2: him to be there on Father's Day, I had zero idea.
- 9:59Speaker 3: You know, it was fun.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Some friends surprised me, and you know, that's really cool
- 10:03Speaker 2: and whatnot. But I really didn't know my dad was there.
- 10:05Speaker 2: So when I turned around, you know, I saw he
- 10:07Speaker 2: was emotional. We both were emotional, and to share that
- 10:10Speaker 2: moment with my dad is something I'll remember for the rest.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Of my life.
- 10:13Speaker 4: So cool Windam, What's what's going through your head when
- 10:16Speaker 4: you sink that putt on sixteen Because the hole started
- 10:20Speaker 4: way off in the fescue and then you hit that
- 10:24Speaker 4: unbelievable recovery shot on two, and then the birdie putt
- 10:28Speaker 4: felt like it could have slipped away from you, but
- 10:31Speaker 4: then you drained it. And then from that point on
- 10:33Speaker 4: it was like, Okay, this is this is your tournament
- 10:35Speaker 4: to lose.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it. It definitely. The hole didn't start good,
- 10:40Speaker 3: it ended ended really good.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I mean that putt was definitely the you know, the
- 10:46Speaker 2: key that that kind of closed the deal. Even though
- 10:48Speaker 2: I bogied seventeen right after, I at least knew on eighteen,
- 10:52Speaker 2: barring something crazy, I'm gonna have a putt to win
- 10:55Speaker 2: the US Open, and that putt was It's one of
- 10:59Speaker 2: those moments I've always wanted, is a kind of a
- 11:01Speaker 2: long putt that kind of solidifies or you know, gives
- 11:05Speaker 2: you that Tiger esque moment. And you know, I didn't
- 11:09Speaker 2: have the Tiger roar that maybe he normally gets. I
- 11:12Speaker 2: had the deafening silence, but I gave out my roar,
- 11:15Speaker 2: So it.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Was pretty ful. Long Islanders man.
- 11:19Speaker 5: By the way, Stuce said that people don't have favorite golfers.
- 11:22Speaker 1: That's not true anymore. No, no, no, no, no. We have
- 11:25Speaker 1: favorite golfers. But even like Phil Mickelson in his prime
- 11:28Speaker 1: was my favorite golfer. But when Lefty was leading a major, Windom,
- 11:31Speaker 1: that's what I'm trying to say. I would roof for
- 11:33Speaker 1: him to get a double bogie if it meant we
- 11:35Speaker 1: were going to have a close ending.
- 11:36Speaker 5: You know, I'm going to try to drop that Windom
- 11:38Speaker 5: is my favorite golfer now, him and Cam younger guy.
- 11:41Speaker 1: That's all I was trying to drop in there. I'm
- 11:43Speaker 1: still trying to rationalize bad behavior. Wyndham real quick on
- 11:49Speaker 1: the way out here. PGA Tour made some big announcements today,
- 11:52Speaker 1: new rules, two tours, essentially very very cool. What do
- 11:56Speaker 1: you make of all this?
- 11:58Speaker 3: I love it. I love it.
- 11:59Speaker 2: I love what Brian roll Like and their team is doing.
- 12:01Speaker 2: They you know, they are continuing to try to make
- 12:05Speaker 2: golf and the PGA Tour the best that it possibly
- 12:08Speaker 2: can be, and I think the future looks bright for golf.
- 12:11Speaker 2: I'm I think it's growing at every level. I mean,
- 12:15Speaker 2: you see guys like Lebron James and Kevin Hard and
- 12:19Speaker 2: you know even you know, diplomats and men, women, all
- 12:24Speaker 2: playing the game of golf, and it's so exciting. And
- 12:27Speaker 2: I think what they're doing is making it easier for
- 12:30Speaker 2: people to understand golf at the professional level. I think
- 12:33Speaker 2: it's going to add tons of meritocracy to the game
- 12:37Speaker 2: and I think ultimately more exciting. So I love what
- 12:39Speaker 2: they're doing. I'm excited for it and I can't wait
- 12:42Speaker 2: for twenty eight.
- 12:43Speaker 1: All right, man, Well, congratulations to you a two time
- 12:46Speaker 1: US Open champion. We appreciate your time, and I apologize
- 12:49Speaker 1: on behalf of everyone who lives on Long Island.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Okay, okay, including yourself.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yes, including mostly myself.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm getting thanks guys. It's a lot of fun.
- 13:00Speaker 2: All right.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Congratulations see you man, I'm glad you got to enjoy
- 13:02Speaker 1: that with D. That was cool man.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you, all right, bud it
