- 0:02You're listening to the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast
- 0:06with Dr. Brenna Hicks.
- 0:09Hi,
- 0:09I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:10The Kid Counselor.
- 0:11This is the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast
- 0:14where I give you insight,
- 0:15awareness,
- 0:15and enlightenment about your parenting and your relationship with your kids.
- 0:19In today's episode,
- 0:20we are continuing the parent Companion series
- 0:23and we are talking about self-fulfilling prophecy.
- 0:28And I was going to say in children,
- 0:29but
- 0:29it's true in adults too.
- 0:31But
- 0:32specifically how it impacts your children.
- 0:35And the messages that they receive,
- 0:37what others communicate to them,
- 0:40how that impacts
- 0:42their
- 0:43personality and their behavior,
- 0:45and obviously in light of therapy,
- 0:48what the child-centered play therapy process would provide
- 0:51as opposed to what
- 0:53they get
- 0:53from other environments and other people.
- 0:55So,
- 0:56we're going to deep dive self-fulfilling prophecy before I do.
- 0:59I just want to say thank you all.
- 1:01I know every single day there are new listeners,
- 1:03new people finding this podcast.
- 1:05So,
- 1:06if you are new or newer,
- 1:07very glad you're here.
- 1:09Thanks for joining us.
- 1:10This is a group of really committed parents who love their
- 1:13kids and who see the value in child-centered play therapy.
- 1:16And many have their children in therapy.
- 1:19So,
- 1:20very much a
- 1:21concerned,
- 1:22loving,
- 1:23attentive group of parents.
- 1:25We're glad you're here.
- 1:26It might be helpful for you to go back and listen to other
- 1:29seasons if you have not and you're new,
- 1:32but season 3 is specifically a parent companion for people considering
- 1:36their children in therapy and or children are already in therapy.
- 1:40All right,
- 1:41so let's dive into self-fulfilling prophecy.
- 1:43You might have heard this phrase.
- 1:44This is not
- 1:45unique just to the psychology field much anymore.
- 1:48It's really become more of a well-known term.
- 1:51Self-fulfilling prophecy
- 1:53is a term that expresses,
- 1:54we are likely to become what others expect us to become.
- 1:59Essentially,
- 2:00if someone consistently tells you,
- 2:03you are capable,
- 2:05you believe that you are capable and become capable,
- 2:08you're an idiot.
- 2:10You believe that you're an idiot and you become an idiot.
- 2:13And so on.
- 2:14So,
- 2:15this works positively and negatively.
- 2:17And most often,
- 2:19I think it's important to note,
- 2:21most often,
- 2:22it's subtle.
- 2:24It's not you're an idiot or you're
- 2:27smart.
- 2:29There are little subtleties that people communicate
- 2:32nonverbally,
- 2:33often
- 2:34with body language,
- 2:35with tone of voice,
- 2:36with attitude,
- 2:38with all kinds of things.
- 2:40that communicate what they expect that person to become.
- 2:44So,
- 2:44let me give some examples.
- 2:46I think often,
- 2:48especially in schools,
- 2:49children become
- 2:51labeled or branded,
- 2:52and I'm air quoting that because
- 2:55essentially what happens is
- 2:57A child struggles for a stretch of time.
- 3:00You know,
- 3:001 week,
- 3:002 weeks,
- 3:013 weeks,
- 3:02and
- 3:03there's no understanding of why the child is struggling.
- 3:06We just,
- 3:06in the school environment,
- 3:07we recognize the child is struggling.
- 3:10Other students in the class don't know.
- 3:12Teachers potentially don't know.
- 3:13Staff does not potentially know
- 3:15that
- 3:16there's a lot of upheaval at home or there's a lot
- 3:19of familial turmoil or someone just died in their family,
- 3:22or a new baby was just born,
- 3:24or whatever.
- 3:24So there's usually a reason.
- 3:27And the child begins to struggle,
- 3:29either emotionally,
- 3:30behaviorally,
- 3:32socially,
- 3:32whatever the scenario,
- 3:33sometimes even academically.
- 3:35And it's very easy for everyone at school.
- 3:40To categorize
- 3:42the child,
- 3:43this is true of human behavior.
- 3:44So this is not a criticism.
- 3:46This is not like,
- 3:47oh gosh,
- 3:47if that's happening at your school,
- 3:48you need to get your kid out of that school.
- 3:50I'm not saying this in a critical way.
- 3:52I'm saying that human behavior is to categorize people.
- 3:56Our brains like things to make sense.
- 3:59So what will happen is we go into a new environment or a new group
- 4:04socially
- 4:04or a new circumstance and our brain wants to go,
- 4:08OK,
- 4:09that one is this,
- 4:10that one is that,
- 4:11that is this,
- 4:12that is that.
- 4:13It's the way we make sense of the world.
- 4:15This is actually a very consistent pattern of behavior.
- 4:18So,
- 4:19sometimes intentionally,
- 4:20more often than not unintentionally,
- 4:24It becomes very easy to say,
- 4:27that's the bad kid.
- 4:29This happens with positive things too.
- 4:32The
- 4:33smartest kid in the class,
- 4:35the one that always knows the answers,
- 4:37always answers the questions,
- 4:39always done with work first.
- 4:41Teacher's favorite.
- 4:42I'm air quoting that again because
- 4:45There's no favorites when you work with children,
- 4:47baloney.
- 4:48But
- 4:49there's everyone in the room knows that's the teacher's
- 4:52favorite and that's the smartest kid in the classroom.
- 4:55Everyone in the room goes,
- 4:56that's the smart kid.
- 4:59That's the athletic kid.
- 5:01That's the musical kid.
- 5:02That's the funny kid.
- 5:04That's the creative kid.
- 5:05That's the quiet kid.
- 5:07That's the mean kid,
- 5:08and so on and so on and so on.
- 5:11So what happens is
- 5:13the child starts to come up against expectations.
- 5:18Because once a child gets labeled or branded as the bad kid,
- 5:23or
- 5:23the mean kid or the aggressive kid,
- 5:25or the crying kid,
- 5:27or the sit in the corner and suck their thumb kid,
- 5:30whatever.
- 5:32What happens is the child is forced to face whether or not
- 5:36they want that to be their identity or not.
- 5:39Am I that kid?
- 5:40Do I want to be that kid?
- 5:42Almost always the answer is no.
- 5:46But self-fulfilling prophecy has pressure
- 5:49that if everyone tells you and believes it
- 5:52and acts as if you are,
- 5:54it's really difficult to combat that.
- 5:57If everyone has an expectation that you're going to flip tables.
- 6:01It's really hard to not flip tables because everyone expects you to do it.
- 6:06And if you say,
- 6:07I don't want to flip tables today.
- 6:10No one knows what to make of you because
- 6:11you're not doing what everyone expects you to do.
- 6:14And that's an extreme scenario.
- 6:16But
- 6:17what about the kid that
- 6:19hasn't talked for eight months?
- 6:22In the academic environment,
- 6:23they haven't said a word,
- 6:24but they really want to talk.
- 6:27But everyone at school
- 6:29and in that classroom says that's the quiet kid.
- 6:33Well,
- 6:33all of a sudden if that child started to speak.
- 6:36It upsets the whole balance because now people are like,
- 6:39wait,
- 6:39you're not the quiet kid anymore.
- 6:40I don't know what to make of this.
- 6:43And there are all kinds of instances of this.
- 6:45This has actually been studied.
- 6:46So if you
- 6:48are really wanting to deep dive this,
- 6:49you can look up the Pygmalion effect.
- 6:52That has been
- 6:53an interesting study that has taken place.
- 6:55You can look up self-fulfilling prophecy studies,
- 6:58lots of research that supports this notion,
- 7:01and
- 7:02it has been proven even when people would argue that they're not susceptible to it.
- 7:07In other words,
- 7:08I would never treat someone the way
- 7:11that someone else
- 7:13said that they were,
- 7:13and therefore I would just assume that's true.
- 7:15I would,
- 7:16I would always see what happens first.
- 7:18Studies have proven that's not true.
- 7:21We do it because it's the way that our brain is wired.
- 7:23We are influenced by labels.
- 7:25We're influenced by what we're told.
- 7:27We're we're influenced by the perceptions that we have.
- 7:31And there's all kinds of references to this
- 7:34in
- 7:36Different avenues.
- 7:37So,
- 7:38in the movie Pretty Woman,
- 7:40she mentions,
- 7:41when you're told you're
- 7:42never going to be anything long enough,
- 7:43you start to believe it.
- 7:45There's a story of someone that was crowned Miss America
- 7:48years ago,
- 7:49and every single day she ran out with her mom to meet the
- 7:53post office worker
- 7:55at the mailbox,
- 7:56and every single day the mailman said to her,
- 7:59there's Miss America.
- 8:02And she became Miss America.
- 8:04So,
- 8:04we have tons and tons and tons of support
- 8:07for this notion.
- 8:08So here's what this means related to therapy.
- 8:10Whether your child's in therapy or not,
- 8:12this can be the therapist,
- 8:13this can be you,
- 8:14this can be anyone in the child's life.
- 8:17When someone
- 8:19unconditionally accepts a child.
- 8:22When someone
- 8:23deeply believes
- 8:25that they are in the process of becoming
- 8:27When someone understands
- 8:30they are working toward becoming a better version of themselves.
- 8:34And all of these points along the way are not the final destination.
- 8:38So even if you're disregulated now,
- 8:40even if you're struggling now,
- 8:42even if you're having a difficult time now.
- 8:45That's not who you are.
- 8:47And I see the capacity in you and I see the capability in you,
- 8:50and I know
- 8:51that you are going to achieve different outcomes
- 8:55because everyone is wired to become a better version of themselves.
- 8:58That's what a child-centered play therapist does,
- 9:01that relationship and that environment
- 9:04that is created.
- 9:06Communicates a self-fulfilling prophecy
- 9:08of you can be anything
- 9:10that you want to be.
- 9:12You can become a completely different version of yourself.
- 9:16In fact,
- 9:16that's what I anticipate you will do.
- 9:19I know that you will become a different version of yourself,
- 9:22a better one,
- 9:23because we're all wired to do that.
- 9:26So when a child comes in labeled the bad kid.
- 9:29That doesn't influence at all what happens in that playroom.
- 9:34We don't see the child as a bad kid.
- 9:37We don't expect them to behave
- 9:39in bad kid ways
- 9:41because
- 9:42that's just a temporary blip on the journey.
- 9:45That's not who they are.
- 9:47And when a child has an adult
- 9:49in their life
- 9:50that treats them that way and sees them that way,
- 9:53the self-fulfilling prophecy is true
- 9:56on the positive too.
- 9:58They believe
- 9:59that I am a problem solver.
- 10:01They believe that I can trust myself.
- 10:04They believe that I can figure things out.
- 10:06They believe that I have what it takes.
- 10:09They believe that I can control myself.
- 10:11They believe that I understand my feelings.
- 10:15And those things become true.
- 10:17So there's so much power in this notion of self-fulfilling prophecy,
- 10:22and
- 10:23often we don't even realize that a
- 10:25child is bound by self-fulfilling prophecy expectations.
- 10:29But it happens all the time.
- 10:31And so,
- 10:33we as parents,
- 10:34as
- 10:35child-centered play therapists in our field,
- 10:37we have the opportunity
- 10:40to communicate to a child,
- 10:42you are
- 10:43becoming someone new,
- 10:45and I believe that you are capable of everything that you want to become.
- 10:50In,
- 10:51in the most
- 10:52positive,
- 10:53healthy,
- 10:53appropriate ways,
- 10:55you can become something else.
- 10:57And when that is expressed to a child,
- 11:00it flips the script on
- 11:02self-fulfilling prophecy.
- 11:03You have to stay disregulated,
- 11:04you have to stay angry,
- 11:06you have to stay aggressive.
- 11:07You have to stay upset.
- 11:09It says
- 11:10you can be anyone that you choose to be.
- 11:13And I will walk this journey with you until you get there
- 11:17with no expectations,
- 11:18of course,
- 11:20but expectancy.
- 11:22I have no expectations that you change.
- 11:24I accept you exactly how you are.
- 11:27But there's an expectancy that you will,
- 11:30because the relationship and the environment are there.
- 11:33So,
- 11:33I hope that that helps you understand self-fulfilling prophecy.
- 11:35I hope that that helps you understand
- 11:37why CCPT is so special
- 11:40because kids are not exposed
- 11:42to that notion often,
- 11:44that
- 11:45I believe the best in you.
- 11:47And when you give people that belief,
- 11:50they rise to the occasion.
- 11:51And that's what we see in kids in CCPT.
- 11:54So,
- 11:54I love y'all.
- 11:55I hope you have a great week.
- 11:56We'll talk again soon.
- 11:57Bye.
