- 0:00We are in Mark chapter 10 this evening.
- 0:02It's good to see everyone here this evening.
- 0:10even a few strangers that kind of wandered in from out east.
- 0:21We are in Mark chapter 10.
- 0:34Let's begin with a word of prayer.
- 0:37Gracious Father in heaven, we come before your throne, grateful for the day, grateful for its blessings, grateful for all that you do for us each and every day, mindful of the
- 0:53manifold blessings that are found in your church and the body of Christ.
- 0:58that we might have one another, that we might have together the hope of heaven, that we might have those around us who love us, who care about us, who will provoke us to love and
- 1:09to good works.
- 1:10Lord, we ask that you be with us as we go through this period of study.
- 1:15May the words that we find in scripture be those things which enlighten our hearts and our minds that we might be.
- 1:23m
- 1:24more pleasing to you each and every day that we might walk in the light as you were in the light.
- 1:29Forgive us when we sin and fall short of your glory.
- 1:32In all this we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:38Verse 35 of chapter 10 says, than James and John the sons of Zebedee came to him, saying, Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.
- 1:48And he said to them, What do want me to do for you?
- 1:51They said to him, Grant us that we may sit on the right hand and on the other on your left hand, in your glory.
- 2:00But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you ask.
- 2:04Are you able to drink the cup that I drink?
- 2:07and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with.
- 2:11They said to him, we are able.
- 2:13So Jesus said to them, you will indeed drink the cup that I drink and with the baptism I am baptized with, you will be baptized.
- 2:22But to sit on my right hand and on my left is not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared.
- 2:31And when the 10 heard it,
- 2:33they began to be greatly displeased with James and John.
- 2:38But Jesus called them to Himself and said, You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
- 2:52Yet it shall not be so among you.
- 2:56But whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.
- 3:02and whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all.
- 3:07For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." As you look here at this text, James and John, of course, as we
- 3:20discussed uh last week, they come to Jesus and they ask for this position, the right hand and the left hand of this.
- 3:30of his throne in glory.
- 3:33And they do this in their minds by all indications of the text thinking this is about prominence, this is about power, this is about authority.
- 3:46And Jesus attaches those ideas, those concepts of authority to what he will state later concerning the Gentiles.
- 3:55but he's going to use this as an opportunity to set a contrast between what the disciples think it means to be his disciple, to be one of the apostles, and what it actually would
- 4:08mean to be one of his apostles.
- 4:11When uh brothers ask him about this position, what does he ask them in return?
- 4:25All right, are you able to drink the cup that I drink?
- 4:28Are you able to be baptized with the baptism that I'm baptized with?
- 4:33Now, is he talking about, ah can you use a cup like mine?
- 4:40Is he talking about uh the upcoming feast of uh Passover where they will have the cup that they pass around?
- 4:51What cup is he talking about?
- 4:56Alright, when you think later uh in the context uh as Jesus is there in the Garden of Gethsemane, what does he pray to the Father?
- 5:08Let this cup pass from me.
- 5:12This is a figure of speech.
- 5:16And so here Jesus is asking them something that while he's asking it to them and he knows what he means, the likelihood is
- 5:26they don't understand what he means because their immediate response is yes, absolutely.
- 5:32And Jesus points out, yes, actually you will.
- 5:36You will partake of this same cup.
- 5:38You will partake of the same baptism.
- 5:40Now, this text also identifies for us, as others have done and will do in the future, that there's more than one sense in which baptism is used.
- 5:54We know
- 5:55from John, John the Baptist that is, that John told the people that I come baptizing you with water but there's one who comes after me who will baptize you with with the Holy
- 6:08Spirit but also with fire.
- 6:14John says there's someone else who has authority for additional baptisms yet we read over in Ephesians chapter 4
- 6:24that there's only one baptism.
- 6:26Now how is it the case that there's only one baptism and yet there are multiple baptisms?
- 6:36All right, they're different things.
- 6:39To baptize something is to submerge it.
- 6:44It is to plunge it into something.
- 6:46It is to immerse it in something.
- 6:49The term baptize, the way we use it, let's just ask it this way.
- 6:56When's the last time you heard the term baptize in a non-religious context in America?
- 7:06You never have.
- 7:06You want to know why?
- 7:07It's not an English word.
- 7:10So we don't use it.
- 7:12If we wanted to say, submerge that thing, guess what we would say?
- 7:17Put that thing in the water.
- 7:18Submerge that.
- 7:20Dump that in the, we'd use all sorts of different terms.
- 7:23You want to know what we could say?
- 7:24Hey, baptize that.
- 7:29But we don't because that's not an English word, okay?
- 7:34It is though a Greek word and guess what language the majority of people in the commercial enterprises they were involved in in the first century spoke, Greek.
- 7:47So for Jesus to say, can you be baptized with the baptism that I'm baptized with would be to say, can you be buried
- 7:59can you be immersed in, plunged into that which I am plunged into?
- 8:10That wouldn't be a very unusual thing to say.
- 8:16Not in the first century.
- 8:19So as you consider the text and as you realize as you go through the text that you're taking the term baptism which was an ordinary word in the first century.
- 8:34That we have now often turned into
- 8:38an exclusively religious term in the 21st century.
- 8:45You have to appreciate the fact that your brain does not always understand that word the way the 1st century brain would have understood it.
- 8:56They just heard dip, plunge, immerse.
- 9:02But we go, well wait a minute, is this Holy Spirit miraculous?
- 9:07Is this baptism?
- 9:08Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, there's only one baptism, huh?
- 9:12No, there's not only one plunging in all of history.
- 9:16No, there's not only one submersion in any form or substance in all the Bible.
- 9:26So then what does Ephesians 4 mean when it says there's only one baptism?
- 9:32The answer is there is only one immersion in all of Christianity, in all the biblical text that you and I and every person who's obedient to God is commanded to participate in.
- 9:53There are many baptisms, some of which you absolutely should not ever want to be baptized in.
- 10:00For instance, the baptism of fire.
- 10:03When John makes the statement concerning Jesus, baptizing with the Holy Ghost and with fire, the Holy Spirit is a promise from the Old Testament prophets, Joel, and fire is a
- 10:17promise of judgment against the nation.
- 10:21He's not saying, hey, you should look forward to that fire one.
- 10:26You should see if you could get a line for that one.
- 10:29That's not what he's saying.
- 10:31He's telling them there's one who's coming who's bringing fulfillment of the Old Testament prophets in both the reward and the promise and the judgment that they promised.
- 10:47Because the Old Testament prophets had promised both to the Jewish nation.
- 10:52both judgment and reward and these blessings from God.
- 10:58Do you have a comment?
- 11:25Well, the first thing is they need to understand what the baptism of Holy Spirit is, ah which is, by the way, an area of a great deal of misunderstanding.
- 11:36uh But one of the things that people do not realize is baptism of Holy Spirit is only ever spoken of as occurring twice in all of scripture.
- 11:47It's only ever performed by Jesus directly.
- 11:53It occurs
- 11:54on the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2 and it occurs on the house of Cornelius in Acts chapter 10.
- 12:01And we know that the same baptism occurs at Cornelius' house that occurred on the day of Pentecost because in Acts chapter 11 Peter stands up and tells the rest of the church in
- 12:15Jerusalem exactly that.
- 12:18He says that the Holy Spirit came on them as
- 12:22as it came on us at the beginning.
- 12:27Now, as he points that out, the emphasis is that the Holy Spirit that Cornelius received was not the promise of the Spirit mentioned in Acts chapter 2 verse 38.
- 12:46It was also not the giving of
- 12:51the Holy Spirit by the laying on of the Apostles hands because they hadn't laid their hands on them.
- 12:57Rather this was a miraculous event that identified that the Jews in Acts chapter 2 would be those who would receive the gospel and entrance into the kingdom.
- 13:14And in Acts chapter 10 it was that the Gentiles
- 13:18would receive the gospel and entrance into the Kingdom.
- 13:23And so it placed the Jew and the Gentile on equal footing in the kingdom because the Spirit was poured out on both of them.
- 13:35Furthermore, in Acts chapter 10, when you look at that text, immediately upon the Spirit being poured out on them and those in that house begin to speak in tongues, Peter asked
- 13:52the question,
- 13:53of the other Jews who are with him, can any forbid water that they should be?
- 14:02baptized.
- 14:05If the baptism was the Holy Spirit,
- 14:09than they'd already been baptized.
- 14:12The baptism they were commanded to participate in that had to do with salvation was not the Holy Spirit.
- 14:23It was baptism for the remission of sins.
- 14:26Furthermore, you have in Acts chapter two that statement that as many of them as were what?
- 14:38believed and confessed?
- 14:40As many of them as repented?
- 14:42No, as many of them as were baptized, the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
- 14:53Okay?
- 14:54They were those who heard, believed, and by the way, when you go through Acts chapter two, you can identify all five of the steps of salvation.
- 15:07in the text.
- 15:09Okay, this is worth looking at.
- 15:11We'll just pause here for just a moment, but this is absolutely worth looking at.
- 15:15In Acts chapter 2, all five Acts of salvation are in the text.
- 15:23They're not, the term for each one is not used, but they're all there.
- 15:28Notice what we read.
- 15:35Acts chapter 2 verse men and brethren let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David that he is both dead and buried and his tomb is with us to this day.
- 15:43Therefore being a prophet and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body according to the flesh he would raise up the Christ to sit on his
- 15:52throne.
- 15:53He foreseeing this spoke concerning the resurrection of Christ that his soul was not to be left in Hades nor did his flesh see corruption.
- 16:03This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.
- 16:08Therefore, being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear." Notice the
- 16:20pouring out of the Holy Spirit was done by who?
- 16:27Jesus Christ.
- 16:31Watch it.
- 16:32This Jesus God has raised up of which we are all witnesses, therefore being exalted to the right hand of God and having received from the Father the promise of Holy Spirit, He, He,
- 16:50Jesus Christ poured out the promise
- 16:57of the Holy Spirit which you now see and hear.
- 17:03What did they see on the heads of the apostles?
- 17:07Clothed in tongues of fire.
- 17:08What did they hear with their ears which they had questioned about earlier in the text?
- 17:15They were speaking in tongues.
- 17:16There's 17 different nations standing there and only 11 or 12 people speaking and everyone was hearing in their own language.
- 17:23Do the math on that.
- 17:28Peter says Jesus is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit and what you have witnessed is evidence of it.
- 17:42You go over to Acts chapter 11 and what does Peter say?
- 17:46That the Holy Spirit was poured out.
- 17:52on the house of Cornelius.
- 17:54Just as on us at the beginning.
- 17:59They received the Spirit just as we at the beginning.
- 18:04Okay?
- 18:05So, here we have Peter identifying the baptism of Holy Spirit.
- 18:10He identifies that Jesus did it, but who was baptized with the Holy Spirit?
- 18:16Twelve men standing in their presence.
- 18:21Okay, not the entire crowd.
- 18:24And were any of them commanded to be baptized by the Holy Spirit?
- 18:31No.
- 18:32Were any of them commanded to be baptized in the Holy Spirit?
- 18:37No.
- 18:39Okay, now notice.
- 18:41For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself, the Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand,
- 18:50until I make your enemies your footstool.
- 18:53Therefore, let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made both this Jesus whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.
- 19:04Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do?
- 19:12All right, watch what happened.
- 19:15Number one, they heard
- 19:20the word, right?
- 19:22How do we know they heard the word?
- 19:25Peter was preaching.
- 19:29Number two, they believed the word.
- 19:33How do we know they believed the word?
- 19:37because they asked what they should do.
- 19:41If someone comes to you and says, there is a flying saucer outside, the aliens have arrived.
- 19:51Do you immediately ask them, what should I do?
- 19:56No, you call for help, because they need it.
- 20:01And it's not the kind of help they're looking for, but they need it.
- 20:06Why?
- 20:06Because you don't believe them.
- 20:10These individuals had just been accused of murdering the very son of God and they believed the message.
- 20:21Having believed the message, they asked, what are we gonna do?
- 20:28Now, what does Peter tell them to do?
- 20:33Verse 37, now when they heard this they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, men and brethren, what shall we do?
- 20:40Then Peter said to them, repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
- 20:54Now, as you look at this text,
- 20:59And as you look at what the text says, what was the first thing Peter commanded them to do?
- 21:08Repent!
- 21:10Why did they need to repent?
- 21:14because they had with wicked hands slain the very Son of God.
- 21:22so they needed to repent.
- 21:23Having heard, having believed, they needed to repent of their sins.
- 21:28Why didn't he tell them to believe?
- 21:30They already did believe.
- 21:34One of the best analogies that helps people get this, why did Jesus say, that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but Peter said, repent and be baptized?
- 21:45The answer is because the people that are being talked about are starting in two different locations.
- 21:51If somebody asks me, how do I get to your house?
- 21:54You to know the first question I'm going to ask them is?
- 21:57Where are you?
- 22:00Well, 20 minutes ago I was driving down I-40.
- 22:05Okay, you want me to give you directions from where you were 20 minutes ago or where you are right now?
- 22:12Peter gave them the directions based upon where they were.
- 22:19Notice as well that Peter had just stated with clarity that Jesus Christ was the Savior, the resurrected Savior, and the very Son of God.
- 22:32And they agreed to that when they said, men and brethren, what shall we do?
- 22:38So in essence, they've already convinced.
- 22:42to the very existence and nature.
- 22:44I'm gonna switch to this mic.
- 22:47I don't know what the other one's doing.
- 22:51to the very existence and nature of the Son of God.
- 22:55Now, watch the text.
- 22:59He says, repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.
- 23:06Furthermore, you have with that statement the recognition that the baptism was going to be by the authority of who?
- 23:17Jesus Christ.
- 23:18Therefore, they are submitting
- 23:20to the authority of Jesus Christ.
- 23:24That's what confession is.
- 23:26It is the submission to the authority of Christ.
- 23:33When we confess, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, we are confessing His authority.
- 23:42So you have hear, you have believe, you have the command to repent, you have confession in what Peter told them to do and that which they acknowledged by asking the question, and
- 23:52you have baptism for the remission of sins.
- 23:56It's right there.
- 23:57You don't have to go anywhere else.
- 24:01but every other passage after Acts chapter two.
- 24:07is in view of the same set of instructions.
- 24:12Even when not every instruction is rehearsed verbatim.
- 24:21if you turn to Romans chapter 10.
- 24:38Verse eight, but what does it say?
- 24:40The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart.
- 24:44That is the word of faith which we preach.
- 24:45What's that?
- 24:46Hearing.
- 24:48Okay, so they had to hear.
- 24:51That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 25:01For with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
- 25:08For with the heart one believes unto righteousness?
- 25:14Question.
- 25:17Does the belief equal the righteousness?
- 25:25No, it is done unto, toward righteousness.
- 25:34For with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto, toward salvation.
- 25:45These things are the approach
- 25:49to salvation.
- 25:50If you try to approach salvation without your heart involved, what's God going to do?
- 25:57Is going to save you?
- 26:00No.
- 26:01If you try to approach salvation without being willing to confess His name and His authority over you and your life, do you think He's going to be willing to save you?
- 26:12No.
- 26:15If you don't first believe who he is and you don't agree to be submissive to his authority, you will not be saved.
- 26:26By the way, that is the context of Romans 10.
- 26:31How do I know?
- 26:31Turn back to Romans chapter 10 verse 1.
- 26:36The context is there is a group of people under discussion who refuse to believe and refuse to submit to the authority of Christ.
- 26:47Who are they?
- 26:48They're the Jews.
- 26:51Notice, my brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved.
- 26:59For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
- 27:05For they, being ignorant of God's righteousness and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God." That is the context of
- 27:19Romans 10.
- 27:21The discussion at hand is not how to be saved.
- 27:28He's going to discuss how to be saved, but that's not the point of the discussion.
- 27:34The context is a group of people who knowing the truth, hearing the truth, having the truth proven to them over and over and over again, refused to submit to the righteousness
- 27:48of God.
- 27:49Why?
- 27:50Because they first wouldn't submit their heart.
- 27:52They second wouldn't submit with their mouth.
- 27:58But notice the rest of the text.
- 28:01He says, for with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation, so that Jews could have been saved, right?
- 28:09But what would they have had to have done?
- 28:11Change their heart and admit that Christ was the Son of God.
- 28:17What are Jews still not willing to do today?
- 28:23Change their heart and admit that Jesus Christ is Son of God.
- 28:26Which tells you, by the way, that the Jews are not saved.
- 28:32Paul's words, not mine.
- 28:34Now notice what he says.
- 28:36He says, for the scripture says, whoever believes on him will not be put to shame.
- 28:42For there is no distinction between Jew or Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon him.
- 28:51For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 28:57Now there will be those who will try and skirt by
- 29:03saying, This calling upon the name of Lord is the same confession made with the mouth earlier in the text.
- 29:08It is not.
- 29:12The words confess and the words call are not the same words.
- 29:16As a matter of fact, this is a quotation from where?
- 29:26Joel 2.32, interesting context there, because that is the context where Joel prophesies concerning the promise of the giving of the Holy Spirit that occurs in Acts chapter 2.
- 29:44You mean Joel prophesied that a message would be preached and that a group of people would call upon the name of the Lord?
- 29:54And Peter said that the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy was what was occurring at that event.
- 30:00And at that event, what were they commanded to do?
- 30:04Repent and be baptized.
- 30:06Not repent and confess.
- 30:09Not believe and confess.
- 30:12Repent.
- 30:13and be baptized.
- 30:15But furthermore...
- 30:20Paul has just brought in Joel 2 to say, whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 30:30How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?
- 30:34And how shall they believe in him in whom they have not heard?
- 30:37And how shall they hear without a preacher?
- 30:39And how shall they preach unless they are sent as it is written, how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things.
- 30:46But they...
- 30:49have not all obeyed the gospel.
- 30:53Who's the they?
- 30:56Israel, the Jews.
- 31:00For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our report?
- 31:04So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
- 31:14Now, at one point in time was Paul just like those Jews?
- 31:22didn't believe, wouldn't confess.
- 31:27So what did Paul do to be saved?
- 31:32Because he's the one writing it.
- 31:35Surely he knows.
- 31:37yeah, actually he does know.
- 31:39Turn back to the book of Acts.
- 31:46Acts chapter 22.
- 31:49Because right next to Romans chapter 10 verse 13, really ought to put a cross reference to Acts chapter 22 verse 16.
- 32:04Paul is recounting what he did to be saved and how he got to the point where he was telling the Jewish nation that they needed to repent in order to be saved.
- 32:19And he says, verse three, I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictest of our father's laws,
- 32:31and was zealous towards God as you all are today.
- 32:35What did he say in Romans 10?
- 32:38They have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
- 32:42Paul introduces this context by telling the one who he's standing before, I was zealous for God just like you.
- 32:52But then he says,
- 32:54I am persecuted this way to death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
- 33:02As also the high priest bears me witness, and all the council of the elders from whom I received letters to the brethren, and went to Damascus to bring in chains, even those who
- 33:14were there to Jerusalem to be punished.
- 33:16Now it happened as I journeyed and came near Damascus uh at about noon, suddenly a great light
- 33:24from heaven shone around me and I fell to the ground and I heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?
- 33:32So I answered, who are you, Lord?
- 33:35What's that?
- 33:38That's a confession of authority.
- 33:41He knows he's Lord, but he doesn't know who he is.
- 33:46And he said, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.
- 33:51And those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but did not hear the voice of him who spoke to me.
- 33:58So I said, what shall I do, Lord?
- 34:02Now, what's that?
- 34:05That's hearing and believing.
- 34:11and confessing.
- 34:15because there is the recognition and the verbal statement of the authority of Jesus Christ.
- 34:25So according to Paul, if the question in the statement was true, that when you hear and you confess the name of Christ, you're saved, Paul's saved right there.
- 34:35Except he's not.
- 34:37How do we know?
- 34:38Because he tells us he wasn't.
- 34:42Notice what we read.
- 34:45So I answered, Who are you, Lord?
- 34:46He said to me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.
- 34:51And those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of him who spoke to me.
- 34:57So I said, What shall I do, Lord?
- 34:59And the Lord said to me, Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do.
- 35:05And since I could not see for the glory of that light being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
- 35:13Then a certain Ananias,
- 35:15a devout man, according to the law, having a good testimony with all the Jews who dwelt there, came to me and he stood and said to me, Brother Saul, now.
- 35:29Do not let someone get away with saying, see, Ananias thought he was already a Christian.
- 35:34He called him brother.
- 35:38Go back to Acts chapter 22 verse 22.
- 35:45Five.
- 35:47Paul will tell you how he's using the term brother because he already used it.
- 35:52Verse five, as also the high priest bears me witness, who's the high priest?
- 35:58He's a Jew who currently wants Paul killed and all the council of the elders who are Jews and currently want Paul
- 36:14Killed.
- 36:18from whom I also receive letters to the brethren.
- 36:27The letters from the high priest were not to the church in Damascus.
- 36:34They were to the authorities of the Jews in Damascus.
- 36:39In the context, Paul is using the term brother and brethren to reference Jews, not Christians.
- 36:50So when Ananias, who was a Jew, called him Brother Saul,
- 36:57Paul's using the term the same way Ananias did.
- 37:02As a fellow Jew, he was called a brother.
- 37:08But notice, he stood and said to me, Brother Saul, receive your sight.
- 37:14And at that same hour, I looked up at him.
- 37:17Then he said, the God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know his will.
- 37:23By the way, did you notice he just said the God of our...
- 37:27fathers.
- 37:29He just initiated the family connection that all Israelites have, that they are the descendants of Abraham.
- 37:40They are brethren as a result.
- 37:44He says the God of our fathers.
- 37:47has chosen you that you should know his will and see the just one and hear the voice of his mouth, for you will be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.
- 38:00And now, why are you waiting?
- 38:04Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name.
- 38:15of the Lord." What did Paul in Romans chapter 10 say?
- 38:22That all those who do X will receive Y.
- 38:30all those who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." When Paul testifies of his own conversion, he says that he was commanded to call upon the name of the Lord by doing
- 38:50what?
- 38:52Being baptized.
- 38:54Not confessing.
- 38:56He had already confessed.
- 38:57He already believed.
- 39:00He had just spent three days praying, waiting for Ananias to arrive.
- 39:08And when Ananias arrived, Ananias said, what are you waiting for?
- 39:13Why are you still in your sins?
- 39:16Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins.
- 39:25Paul saw all the time, knew how he was saved.
- 39:32He knew he was still in his sins and he had seen the light and God in Christ had appeared to him.
- 39:41And yet, Ananias says, there is something you lack.
- 39:47By the way, Paul still knew there was something he lacked because what did he ask?
- 39:50What shall I do?
- 39:52Paul knew he lacked something.
- 39:54Ananias knew he lacked something.
- 39:56Jesus knew he lacked something.
- 39:57That's because he sent him to Damascus to find out what he should do.
- 40:01Everyone who hears and believes and confesses and stops there lacks something and Paul knew it and Ananias knew it and Jesus knew it.
- 40:16because they're still in their sins.
- 40:19Their sins have not been washed away.
- 40:24Which is, by the way, why there is only one baptism in all the New Testament that we are commanded to be baptized with.
- 40:37And it is baptism in water for the remission of sins.
- 40:43There's not another command anywhere in all the New Testament for anyone to be baptized.
- 40:54not a single occasion where anyone anywhere commands anyone to be baptized in anything other than water.
- 41:08So as we get into Mark chapter 10, you're welcome.
- 41:15I love it when people ask for a sermon they didn't know they asked for.
- 41:23So.
- 41:26Jesus, when he says, you be baptized with the same baptism I'm baptized with, the apostles did not immediately think, he's talking about how we're saved.
- 41:36No.
- 41:39They understood him to be using an analogy the same way we would.
- 41:45Can you go through the things that I'm going to go through?
- 41:56Have you ever heard the phrase about someone?
- 41:59Yeah, he's up to his neck in it.
- 42:03Did you immediately assume that he was physically up to his neck in something?
- 42:08No.
- 42:09Why?
- 42:09Because we know how language works.
- 42:13They didn't assume that Jesus was asking them about a physical cup.
- 42:17They didn't think he was asking about a physical baptism either.
- 42:24They knew he was asking about the thing that he was tasked with doing and the challenges he was tasked with facing.
- 42:35What they didn't realize is that the real cost was their life.
- 42:41Because what they're worried about is their authority.
- 42:46So Jesus says, yes indeed, you will drink of the cup that I drink and you will be baptized with the same baptism that I'm baptized with.
- 42:58But to sit on my right hand and on my left is not mine to give.
- 43:03But it is for those for whom it is prepared.
- 43:08Jesus makes the point.
- 43:09uh This is, see that seat over there?
- 43:14It's got a sign on it, says, See that seat over there?
- 43:19It's got a sign on it, it says, reserved.
- 43:21Jesus, who's it reserved for?
- 43:23Not your business.
- 43:26Now, Jesus called them to Himself after the other apostles are standing around and they're like,
- 43:39Did these two just seriously ask that?
- 43:42While all of us were standing here?
- 43:48The goal.
- 43:50You go read the rest of the parallel passage, you find out their mother even showed up to ask for it.
- 44:01No kidding.
- 44:05But Jesus called them to himself and said to them, you know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them.
- 44:19Picture it if you will.
- 44:20Jesus says, come here.
- 44:22Have you ever watched the Gentiles?
- 44:25You ever see a Gentile king go by?
- 44:29Have you ever seen the Romans parade through town and there's the king and there's the governor and there's the authorities?
- 44:38You know what happens, right?
- 44:41You do the wrong thing and you what?
- 44:44You die.
- 44:46You say the wrong thing and you die.
- 44:50They don't just have authority, they lord it over the people.
- 45:01He says, yet it shall not be so among you.
- 45:08rather whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant.
- 45:17Jesus said you have completely misunderstood what the role is.
- 45:24They just spent three and a half years training for the role, and they completely misunderstood what the role was.
- 45:39because they're imagining power and authority and rule.
- 45:43uh
- 45:45And Jesus said, no slavery, bondage to all those who you have authority over.
- 46:00There's a bit of a warning there that I believe corresponds to James's warning in James chapter 3 where James tells the first century Christians, be ye not many masters.
- 46:19The words there, it's teachers.
- 46:24He warns the Christians, don't be in a hurry to be a teacher.
- 46:31Don't be in hurry to be a master.
- 46:32Don't be in a hurry to have authority over someone.
- 46:38Number one, because you have a greater judgment.
- 46:43Number two, because your mouth can cause someone else to err, to sin, and you will judge yourself by doing so.
- 46:55But Jesus also points out that just makes you their servant, not their ruler.
- 47:03So Jesus is going to help these apostles as they are beginning that journey here in this text to Jerusalem for the crucifixion.
- 47:15He is going to help them realize that if they're going to be what they're asking for,
- 47:24They're not going to be first.
- 47:26They're going to be last.
- 47:28All right?
- 47:28Thank you for your attention.
