Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, Discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:38Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:41Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this episode, we are talking just
- 0:45Speaker 1: a teen s weensy a little bit about this week's
- 0:47Speaker 1: full episode of Ariana Grande and digging into a ton
- 0:51Speaker 1: of your voicemails, your texts, and your dms. We took
- 0:54Speaker 1: the week or fourth of July off and didn't have
- 0:56Speaker 1: an after party episode, so consider the same makeup episode
- 1:00Speaker 1: and a heavy engagement dive with you.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Guys.
- 1:03Speaker 1: We talked me to your rock star heroes, more Arrowsmith,
- 1:06Speaker 1: the greatest hip hop groups of all time. All right,
- 1:09Speaker 1: disc goes, let's get into it. Microphone check one one
- 1:28Speaker 1: one one one one one one. Okay, Discos, welcome back
- 1:31Speaker 1: from the break that is, assuming you had one. Hopefully
- 1:34Speaker 1: you did. Hopefully you're over your hangovers, and you still
- 1:37Speaker 1: got all your digits on your hands and your feets,
- 1:39Speaker 1: and there's been no fireworks accidents. You guys are ready,
- 1:42Speaker 1: ready like I am, to talk about what we here
- 1:44Speaker 1: in Disgraceland are constantly obsessed with, and that is music
- 1:48Speaker 1: and the gloriously flawed and talented men and women who
- 1:51Speaker 1: make it. I know that I am all right. This
- 1:54Speaker 1: week in Disgraceland, our full episode is on Ariana Grande,
- 1:58Speaker 1: and quite honestly, it's one of my new favorites. It
- 2:01Speaker 1: is literally action packed thirty minutes of compressed drama detailing
- 2:05Speaker 1: the terrorist attack at her concert in Manchester, England, back
- 2:08Speaker 1: in May of twenty seventeen. So this is one of
- 2:10Speaker 1: the more recent subjects that we've done. I highly encourage
- 2:14Speaker 1: you guys to check this episode out. Normally, as you know,
- 2:18Speaker 1: I dive into the episodes here and after party give
- 2:20Speaker 1: a little peak behind the creative curtain or some other
- 2:23Speaker 1: kind of context about the episode of that subject. But
- 2:25Speaker 1: I'm going to skip that this week so that we
- 2:28Speaker 1: can spend more time talking to each other and so
- 2:31Speaker 1: I can cover more of your voicemails and more of
- 2:33Speaker 1: your texts. I've been asking a lot of questions. You
- 2:36Speaker 1: guys been calling in, You've been texting, you've been answering me,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you've been dming me setting in those answers, and quite honestly,
- 2:43Speaker 1: I don't know what I'm going to do. There's so
- 2:45Speaker 1: much incoming and so little space to respond. And I'm
- 2:49Speaker 1: very grateful. I have a lot of gratitude for this
- 2:51Speaker 1: conversation that we have going on. I got to figure
- 2:55Speaker 1: out a way to engage further. It's hard to get
- 3:00Speaker 1: through all the voicemails, all the texts. I try. I
- 3:02Speaker 1: try to respond. I try my best. I am not complaining.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Don't take this as a bitch. It's not. But in
- 3:08Speaker 1: this episode here of the after party, because we didn't
- 3:10Speaker 1: have an after party last week, is of the fourth
- 3:11Speaker 1: of July holiday week, I'm gonna spend more time answering
- 3:15Speaker 1: you guys. Okay, so let's let's party, right shall we.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Billboard magazine. Fucking Billboard magazine. As I've mentioned this week
- 3:24Speaker 1: on social media and in our mini episodes, it's got
- 3:27Speaker 1: this list. You guys know about this, the top fifty
- 3:29Speaker 1: rap groups of all time. And I think, well, I
- 3:32Speaker 1: think their top five is all out of whack. I
- 3:35Speaker 1: asked you guys, what your top five rap groups are,
- 3:37Speaker 1: your top ten rap groups, your favorite hip hop groups
- 3:39Speaker 1: of all time, your faves. Here's what you had to say.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I just want to hit on this. It's a little bit.
- 3:44Speaker 1: We're almost through with this subject here, let's check in
- 3:47Speaker 1: with what the nine O.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Nine I had to say, Hey, Jay, Elli er Daz here.
- 3:53Speaker 3: So I think the number one rap group of all
- 3:57Speaker 3: time is Lutank Clent And I'm probably being biased because
- 4:02Speaker 3: I grew up listening to them, but they were literally
- 4:05Speaker 3: what saved my life in like a.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Ton of ways, and I gotta say they are original,
- 4:12Speaker 4: raw and only survive on the dream that they had.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Ellie, thank you for the voicemail. I totally get the
- 4:22Speaker 1: love for Wu Tang as the number one rap group
- 4:25Speaker 1: of all time. Not my choice. I go with NWA,
- 4:29Speaker 1: but I can see Wu Tang over Billboard's choice of
- 4:33Speaker 1: Outcasts and bonus points to WU for saving your life.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I'm glad you're around, Ellie. Thank you for the call.
- 4:39Speaker 1: More on the subject here. The greatest rap group of
- 4:41Speaker 1: all time? Like I said on social and the Instagram page,
- 4:44Speaker 1: I'm also on threads right now. I know, like the
- 4:46Speaker 1: whole fucking world is all of a sudden, It's one
- 4:48Speaker 1: more app we gotta deal with. So if you're there,
- 4:51Speaker 1: I'm there, and I'm talking about this over there, just
- 4:54Speaker 1: like I am everywhere. Kind of pissed about the Billboard list,
- 4:57Speaker 1: but whatever, I'll get over it. Lots of awesome hip
- 4:59Speaker 1: hop content coming our way. We've got the fifteenth anniversary
- 5:03Speaker 1: of hip hop coming up. We're gonna have an announcement
- 5:05Speaker 1: of our own regarding the big celebration soon, so keep
- 5:08Speaker 1: an ear out for that this week. In the week off,
- 5:11Speaker 1: we got a ton of incoming voicemails and texts. On
- 5:15Speaker 1: the last episode of Disgraceland on Arrowsmith, our last full episode,
- 5:20Speaker 1: some of your reactions, your reactions on meeting the band.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I also asked you, guys, have you met any of
- 5:27Speaker 1: your heroes? What was that experience like your musical heroes.
- 5:30Speaker 1: This is all in reference to the anecdote I told
- 5:34Speaker 1: you about meeting us or kind of meeting or not
- 5:36Speaker 1: really meeting Steven Tyler as a little kid. So let's
- 5:39Speaker 1: start out this voicemail from the four h six.
- 5:43Speaker 5: My name is Jeff. I'm leaving a message about hating Arrowsmith.
- 5:47Speaker 5: I was actually a fan club member and could get
- 5:49Speaker 5: good seats. I lived in Montana and we traveled all
- 5:53Speaker 5: the way to the Columbia, George and they cambled because
- 5:57Speaker 5: it was too cold. That really set me off with
- 6:01Speaker 5: the whole thing. I quit the membership and the hell
- 6:04Speaker 5: with them.
- 6:07Speaker 1: That is a tough hang, my man. You drive miles
- 6:09Speaker 1: upon miles to see your favorite band and then they
- 6:11Speaker 1: bail because it's too cold. I'm gonna add insult to
- 6:15Speaker 1: injury here and just let you know. They're from fucking
- 6:18Speaker 1: New Hampshire and New England, some of these guys, so
- 6:21Speaker 1: no strangers to the cold. I don't know how cold
- 6:23Speaker 1: it was, but you got a right to be upset. Okay.
- 6:26Speaker 1: As in reference to my specific feelings toward Aerosmith and
- 6:30Speaker 1: their music, the eight five six called in with their oad.
- 6:33Speaker 6: Take hey, Jake Mark from New Jersey. I was just
- 6:37Speaker 6: listening to the Aerosmith after party. I share your feelings
- 6:41Speaker 6: about Ariostifton was my first concert at a young age,
- 6:44Speaker 6: and I am love hate with that things.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So eight five six the reason for my love hate
- 6:51Speaker 1: relationship with Aerosmith. You know, to me, it's all about
- 6:56Speaker 1: the music. I say that, but obviously you heard the
- 6:59Speaker 1: story told in the last after party about being a
- 7:02Speaker 1: little kid and running into them backstage and whatever, whatever, whatever.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I don't want to beliebor that. But I don't know,
- 7:08Speaker 1: like when I think about, oh God, Aerosmith, they annoy
- 7:10Speaker 1: the shit at mean, I don't think of that moment
- 7:12Speaker 1: at all. If anything, they were made Tom Hamilton made
- 7:14Speaker 1: the band cooler my estimation during that incident. So it's
- 7:20Speaker 1: just the music. It's like, on one hand, you know,
- 7:23Speaker 1: it's not like the Rolling Stones. Like the Rolling Stones
- 7:25Speaker 1: had obviously like the sixties, the seventies, and then there's
- 7:31Speaker 1: a huge dip in the eighties. They weren't really that active,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and then the nineties. You know, it's like the emotional
- 7:38Speaker 1: rescue stuff, like that stuff I go back to now
- 7:40Speaker 1: and I love it. I didn't like it at the time.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I love it now. Sorry I said emotional rescue. That's
- 7:44Speaker 1: someone I meant. I met Steel Wheels, then you got Arrowsmith, right,
- 7:50Speaker 1: and they peek in the seventies, and again the eighties
- 7:54Speaker 1: they're not all that active. There's the run DMC thing,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and then they make the big comeback at the end
- 7:59Speaker 1: of the eighties. I think that was like eighty eight,
- 8:01Speaker 1: eighty nine. I could be wrong. It was eighty seven.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I don't know run DMC things started it off, however,
- 8:08Speaker 1: and they've got there's some okay stuff Angel, then there's
- 8:13Speaker 1: this stuff on Pump, which is pretty okay later, but
- 8:17Speaker 1: then there's that whole like Alicia Silverstone era Aerosmith. Nothing
- 8:22Speaker 1: against Alicia Silverstone, but god, that stuff is just awful
- 8:27Speaker 1: awful when they're cheesy, They're just so cheesy. I can't
- 8:30Speaker 1: get over it. It's the music, it's not the meeting them,
- 8:33Speaker 1: all right, another one on the meeting Aerosmith thing. Let's
- 8:36Speaker 1: get into the two five to six.
- 8:39Speaker 7: Hey, Jake, here's a story about meeting your heroes. It's
- 8:41Speaker 7: a bit long. I'll try to make it as quick
- 8:43Speaker 7: as I can. I was playing acoustic percussion backing a
- 8:46Speaker 7: singer songwriter friend of mine at a Mexican restaurant outside
- 8:49Speaker 7: hunts By, Alabama, about eight years ago. We were in
- 8:52Speaker 7: the middle of our first set when a large group
- 8:54Speaker 7: entered and made their way to a small, semi private
- 8:56Speaker 7: area on the opposite side of the bar where we
- 8:59Speaker 7: were playing. A couple of minutes later, an instantly recognizable
- 9:03Speaker 7: rock legend walked in to join them. Gray Skullcap sunglasses,
- 9:07Speaker 7: black leather duster, and an orange beard reaching down past
- 9:10Speaker 7: his chest. That's right, the Reverend Billy S. Gibbons himself.
- 9:14Speaker 7: My friend and I looked at each other, each of
- 9:16Speaker 7: us with our eyes as wide as they could get,
- 9:18Speaker 7: as it's really happening. We got our confirmation a few
- 9:21Speaker 7: minutes later. I'm not sure why, but he walks around
- 9:23Speaker 7: to our side of the bar, orders a glass of
- 9:25Speaker 7: red wine, and essentially chugs it. He did this three
- 9:28Speaker 7: to four times during dinner. My guess, being that we're
- 9:31Speaker 7: on the heart of the Bible belt, is that some
- 9:33Speaker 7: or all of the group he was with did not
- 9:34Speaker 7: approve of alcohol, and that he came to drink by
- 9:37Speaker 7: himself to keep from offending them. I say that because
- 9:39Speaker 7: he seemed to be a very respectful man. He spent
- 9:42Speaker 7: nearly our entire first break speaking with my friend and me.
- 9:46Speaker 7: He complimented my percussion set up, and he shares some
- 9:48Speaker 7: wisdom with us that I pass along. Whenever I have
- 9:51Speaker 7: the chance, get rid of tower speakers. People are walking
- 9:54Speaker 7: around all day subjected to noise pollution assaulting their ears.
- 9:58Speaker 7: Don't have the speakers at ear left, use wedge shaped
- 10:01Speaker 7: speakers on the floor to send the sound up and
- 10:03Speaker 7: out to draw the people in ignite the atmosphere. He
- 10:07Speaker 7: repeated that phrase several times, ignite the atmosphere. For ten
- 10:12Speaker 7: to twelve minutes we held court with rot Royalty. He
- 10:15Speaker 7: was very gracious with his time and seemed genuinely interested
- 10:18Speaker 7: in us. At one point, a nine or ten year
- 10:20Speaker 7: old kid walks up, smartphone in hand, undoubtedly sent over
- 10:24Speaker 7: by his boom or dad, to snap a pick of
- 10:26Speaker 7: the guy he probably had never heard of. Mister Gibbons
- 10:29Speaker 7: just sort of shewed the kid away, as if to say,
- 10:31Speaker 7: not now, kid. The adults, the musicians in the room
- 10:34Speaker 7: were talking. Mister Gibbons exited during our second set with
- 10:37Speaker 7: a nod and a subdued two finger wave with his
- 10:40Speaker 7: hand by his side as we played the Marshall Tucker bands.
- 10:43Speaker 7: Can't you see a subtle acknowledgment that, for one night,
- 10:47Speaker 7: a living rock and roll legend treated us not as posers,
- 10:50Speaker 7: wanna bees or amateurs, but as peers rock a rolla all.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Right, all right, ritter, ritter, right, all right, cool story,
- 10:57Speaker 1: cool story. Thank you for calling it and sharing that.
- 11:00Speaker 8: Uh.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Let's stay on on this topic here with this message
- 11:05Speaker 1: from the four to nine.
- 11:07Speaker 9: Hey, Jay Chris here, I was just calling on reference
- 11:11Speaker 9: to you, talking about musicians to let you down or
- 11:15Speaker 9: lifting you up. My very first concert was under Oh.
- 11:19Speaker 9: The drummer Aaron Gillizie came up to the side of
- 11:21Speaker 9: the stage. I was reaching my hand out and he said, hey, man,
- 11:25Speaker 9: I better see you in that pit. I know he
- 11:28Speaker 9: wasn't watching for me in the pit, but just the
- 11:30Speaker 9: fact that he had acknowledged me and spent the time
- 11:32Speaker 9: to talk to me for a quick second just sealed
- 11:36Speaker 9: the deal. I continue to listen and still listen to
- 11:38Speaker 9: this day.
- 11:39Speaker 6: All Right, brother, have.
- 11:39Speaker 9: A good one.
- 11:40Speaker 1: All Right, I love this. I love this. It's on Aerosmith,
- 11:43Speaker 1: but I still love it. These little moments. Uh, when
- 11:46Speaker 1: we're kids, we're so impressionable, especially in the hardcore world,
- 11:49Speaker 1: the punk world. It's fantastic when you know the band's
- 11:54Speaker 1: break down, that barrier between stage and crowd. They just
- 11:59Speaker 1: it means so much much. If you're a young kid
- 12:01Speaker 1: in a band and you've got an audience in here
- 12:03Speaker 1: for some reason, you know you're listening, you get a
- 12:05Speaker 1: chance to hear this, just know how you interact with
- 12:08Speaker 1: your fans, it means so so, so so much. You
- 12:11Speaker 1: probably already know that, especially if you're a hardcore band.
- 12:13Speaker 1: It's part of it's part of the whole deal. I
- 12:15Speaker 1: love hearing this stuff from you guys. Keep it coming,
- 12:17Speaker 1: all right. This next voicemail is from the three one too,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and it is epic.
- 12:23Speaker 10: Hi, man, love your podcast. I was just driving here
- 12:28Speaker 10: and you're asking about rockstar encounters. It's been lucky enough
- 12:31Speaker 10: to have a bunch of them. But one that really
- 12:34Speaker 10: stands out is I was a sponsor rep one tour
- 12:36Speaker 10: with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant in ninety five, I think,
- 12:41Speaker 10: and we were supposed to get a bunch of autographed
- 12:44Speaker 10: guitars done for a food bank that Page and Plant
- 12:48Speaker 10: wanted to support. So this was basically their idea, and
- 12:51Speaker 10: I worked it out with their people and set up
- 12:53Speaker 10: all the guitars to be signed at the Rosemont Horizon
- 12:56Speaker 10: in Chicago, and little paint sticks every five or six guitars,
- 13:00Speaker 10: just in case they ran out of paint. And as
- 13:03Speaker 10: Jimmy Page walked in with his assistant, apparently he had
- 13:06Speaker 10: forgotten about this arrangement and looked at me and called
- 13:09Speaker 10: me a fucking By Jimmy Page, I got called a
- 13:14Speaker 10: fucking which was awesome. And I got called there's dressing
- 13:18Speaker 10: him later that night and he apologize and it was cool,
- 13:21Speaker 10: and I said, Man, I got called au Ju Page,
- 13:24Speaker 10: you made my made my day.
- 13:26Speaker 8: So there you go.
- 13:27Speaker 10: There's one rock and rolling counter.
- 13:28Speaker 8: Thanks man.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Wow, amazing story. And I gotta say, I love your
- 13:35Speaker 1: attitude about this. You know, I don't know how I
- 13:38Speaker 1: would feel if it were me. I'd like to think
- 13:41Speaker 1: I would feel the same way way you feel. You've
- 13:43Speaker 1: got a great attitude. You're definitely positive about this. You
- 13:46Speaker 1: obviously get the humor in it. I like the Jimmy
- 13:48Speaker 1: Page apologize to you. That's pretty awesome. Maybe he was
- 13:52Speaker 1: just having a bad day. People have bad days. Shouldn't
- 13:54Speaker 1: take it out on other people. Though, How to bleepb
- 13:57Speaker 1: out the C words? There's just three of them. That's
- 13:59Speaker 1: a bit much even for this show, all right. From
- 14:03Speaker 1: the let's end here from the seven to eight one.
- 14:07Speaker 11: Hey Jake, what up? Your boy is from Boston? Keep
- 14:10Speaker 11: up the great work. Here's a little story about the
- 14:13Speaker 11: time myself and my twin brother met Stephen Tyler on
- 14:16Speaker 11: a plane coming back to Chicago. We're leaving the airport,
- 14:21Speaker 11: we're getting on the plane, and I hear a familiar
- 14:24Speaker 11: voice coming from the cockpit. I look over and Steven
- 14:28Speaker 11: Tyler talking to the pilot. Tell my brother, Hey, that's
- 14:33Speaker 11: Stephen Tyler. In the meantime, as I always do, I
- 14:37Speaker 11: give the flight attendance some treats to show them my appreciation.
- 14:43Speaker 11: All of a sudden, Stephen goes, hey, what is that
- 14:46Speaker 11: would you do? I said, I gave some treats to
- 14:50Speaker 11: the flight attendants because I appreciate them. He says to me,
- 14:54Speaker 11: in all my years of traveling, why haven't I thought
- 14:57Speaker 11: of that? All of a sudden, my brother and him
- 14:59Speaker 11: sof talking about sobriety. My brother sober for five years,
- 15:04Speaker 11: Steven Tyler for fourteen years. They face some sober shit
- 15:06Speaker 11: to each other, They smile, they hug, and we go
- 15:11Speaker 11: on our way and then I say, hey, Steven, if
- 15:14Speaker 11: you guys want to hang out later, let me know.
- 15:17Speaker 11: Obviously we didn't hang out, but it was a cool
- 15:20Speaker 11: moment and I'll never forget it.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Keep up the good works, rock and Roller, right on ish.
- 15:26Speaker 1: I love this story. I love this Stephen Tyler was cool.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I've been hard on him past couple of weeks and
- 15:32Speaker 1: past couple of minutes. Actually, and it's it's cool to
- 15:36Speaker 1: hear a positive story about the dude and hear the
- 15:38Speaker 1: experience you and your brother had. So thanks for the voicemail.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Appreciate it. I want to close the book on this
- 15:44Speaker 1: other question we have going on on musical mashups, weird
- 15:48Speaker 1: weird ones, that is, weird musical collaborations, and I'm playing
- 15:53Speaker 1: this one more for myself than for everyone else. Let's
- 15:55Speaker 1: check out the five oh five.
- 15:57Speaker 8: Hey, you we're talking about weird mashups. I mean this
- 15:59Speaker 8: is well, yeah, it would be a weird mashup, but
- 16:02Speaker 8: it actually happened, and it's just weird because they're weird,
- 16:07Speaker 8: but it's a perfect matchup. It was a friend of
- 16:10Speaker 8: mine saw Tom Waits and Leon Redbone together in concert.
- 16:19Speaker 8: I wish I was there, but I missed it. You're
- 16:21Speaker 8: awesome later, Jake Niall in the five oh five.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, this one isn't all that weird. It's not,
- 16:29Speaker 1: but it is a reminder to listen to Tom Waits. We
- 16:32Speaker 1: all need to be reminded to listen to Tom Waits
- 16:35Speaker 1: more often. Consider this a public service announcement from yours truly,
- 16:40Speaker 1: prompted by the five oh five, All right. I told you, guys,
- 16:43Speaker 1: I was going to go deep on engagement. Apologize to
- 16:45Speaker 1: those of you who left messages and didn't yet get responses.
- 16:48Speaker 1: I can't have an episode. This is just a bunch
- 16:49Speaker 1: of voicemails that I play. I got to cut it somewhere.
- 16:53Speaker 1: If I didn't respond here in the episode, I'm going
- 16:55Speaker 1: to try to respond via text. And if you left
- 16:57Speaker 1: messages regarding bad Lands, those, of course are going to
- 16:59Speaker 1: get answered in this week's wrap party. In the bad
- 17:02Speaker 1: Lands feed, I'll probably go a little deeper there with engagement.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Let's do one more final voicemail and then we'll take
- 17:09Speaker 1: a break.
- 17:11Speaker 11: Yeah, okay, this is Curts from Connecticut and quite thank
- 17:14Speaker 11: you man.
- 17:15Speaker 5: Everything you do is gold.
- 17:17Speaker 11: I'd really like to hear a little bit about yourself, man.
- 17:20Speaker 3: What make sure who you are?
- 17:22Speaker 10: You do a lot on an amazing amount of artists,
- 17:26Speaker 10: but what makes you you? Man?
- 17:29Speaker 11: Let's hear about that.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Yo, curtis my man. Thank you. I appreciate that. I'm
- 17:38Speaker 1: going to answer this question not out of narcissism, but
- 17:42Speaker 1: just in a in a moment, in a sincere, sincere
- 17:47Speaker 1: effort to connect with you guys. And I said earlier
- 17:51Speaker 1: that I have a lot of gratitude for this conversation
- 17:52Speaker 1: that we're having, and I do, and that's that's how
- 17:56Speaker 1: I'm going to approach this. What makes me I am?
- 18:00Speaker 1: What makes me me? I guess you know. To answer
- 18:03Speaker 1: your question, is you got to go back to young
- 18:05Speaker 1: me who was obsessed with all kinds of music. I'm
- 18:10Speaker 1: trying to answer this question, Curtis trying to answer your
- 18:12Speaker 1: question in the context of why we're all here because
- 18:15Speaker 1: of Disgraceland because of music. I was obsessed, obviously, particularly
- 18:19Speaker 1: when I was a kid. I was obsessed with aggressive music,
- 18:22Speaker 1: going as far back as, like, you know, fourth grade
- 18:26Speaker 1: and getting into a CDC and heavy metal for the
- 18:28Speaker 1: first time. I was an angry little kid, and angry
- 18:31Speaker 1: music opened me up. It made me less angry in
- 18:35Speaker 1: a weird way. It just you know, boys, as you
- 18:39Speaker 1: probably know, you are one, you were one. You have
- 18:42Speaker 1: a lot of aggression, get a lot of testosterone, you
- 18:44Speaker 1: get a lot of stuff swirling through. I have two
- 18:46Speaker 1: little boys myself. They go fucking crazy, they're lunatics regularly.
- 18:50Speaker 1: They have to get this energy out. I did too,
- 18:52Speaker 1: and in angry music, aggressive music was what helped me
- 18:55Speaker 1: as a young kid and then the other thing I
- 18:56Speaker 1: had going on because my father's influence as a musician.
- 19:00Speaker 1: He was in everything, and I saw firsthand that you
- 19:02Speaker 1: can be into everything. So when kids in my neighborhood
- 19:05Speaker 1: were just like siloing themselves off, I'm I'm a metal
- 19:09Speaker 1: head er, I'm a punk rocker, or I'm whatever, that
- 19:13Speaker 1: didn't truck with me at a young age. I knew
- 19:15Speaker 1: how I knew how ridiculous and limiting that was. My
- 19:18Speaker 1: dad had great taste, and he was, like I said,
- 19:20Speaker 1: he was into everything, and I emulated that even as
- 19:22Speaker 1: a young kid, even to my to the detriment of
- 19:26Speaker 1: my physical safety at times. Nowadays, I know it's gonna
- 19:29Speaker 1: sound weird, but for what I'm trying to grasp at,
- 19:33Speaker 1: how it relates to your question, you know, what makes
- 19:35Speaker 1: me me and relative to disgraceland. What I'm trying to
- 19:38Speaker 1: grasp at these days creatively how to tell these stories
- 19:41Speaker 1: and the best possible way that I can, what I'm
- 19:44Speaker 1: always doing is I'm reaching back into that bedroom that
- 19:48Speaker 1: I grew up in, that I shared with my little
- 19:49Speaker 1: brother as a little teenager in and I'm trying to
- 19:52Speaker 1: entertain that version of me that kid, Not to say
- 19:56Speaker 1: I'm trying to entertain young kids with Disgraceland or with
- 19:58Speaker 1: what I'm making. I'm not, but I am trying to
- 20:02Speaker 1: entertain the younger version of me. I wanted to know
- 20:06Speaker 1: everything I could about my heroes, the musicians that I loved.
- 20:09Speaker 1: And this was in an age, in an era that
- 20:12Speaker 1: was pre Internet, and it was particularly hard to find
- 20:17Speaker 1: information on artists that were not mainstream, and those tended
- 20:21Speaker 1: to be as well. As I got older, those tended
- 20:23Speaker 1: to be the artist that I was more interested in.
- 20:26Speaker 1: So I poured through Rolling Stone, Spin, Maximum Rock and Rolls,
- 20:29Speaker 1: Suburban Voice, Anti Matter. I just always wanted to learn,
- 20:34Speaker 1: to learn more, to listen and learn, to listen and learn,
- 20:38Speaker 1: and beyond that, to be entertained. And you know, life
- 20:43Speaker 1: in a little Massachusetts milltown was fucking boring, super boring,
- 20:48Speaker 1: like paint drying on the walls, boring. I always had
- 20:51Speaker 1: the sense that there was this fucking annoying sense that
- 20:54Speaker 1: there was always something better happening somewhere else, and music
- 20:58Speaker 1: was an escape, first figuratively through the records I listened to,
- 21:02Speaker 1: and through the articles I read in the books I read,
- 21:04Speaker 1: and then when I started going into Worcester, into Boston
- 21:06Speaker 1: and going to see shows. Then it was a literal escape.
- 21:10Speaker 1: When I joined a band, it was an escape that
- 21:11Speaker 1: I could kind of control. And now it's still an
- 21:15Speaker 1: escape as a you know, a middle aged dad, you know,
- 21:19Speaker 1: trying to try to make a living doing something that
- 21:23Speaker 1: interests him. It's still an escape. Music has always been
- 21:27Speaker 1: an escape, and I've never really, you know, articulated it
- 21:30Speaker 1: that way or thought about it that pointedly until now,
- 21:32Speaker 1: until answering your question, Curtis, So thank you. I appreciate that.
- 21:36Speaker 1: I hope that answers. I hope that answers you. You know,
- 21:40Speaker 1: let me know what you were, what makes you you man?
- 21:42Speaker 1: Write in, call me, text me whatever, let me know.
- 21:44Speaker 1: All right. I think all all of this background though
- 21:47Speaker 1: that I just mentioned, I think all of it ends
- 21:49Speaker 1: up somewhere in Disgraceland. I hope it does anyways. Like
- 21:54Speaker 1: I said, yeah, appreciate the question. And if you've got
- 21:57Speaker 1: specific questions about me, any of you, Kurt, anyone else,
- 22:00Speaker 1: feel free to ask. Happy to get to know all
- 22:03Speaker 1: of you a little better. Six one seven nine oh
- 22:06Speaker 1: six six six three eight. I'll be back after this
- 22:08Speaker 1: break with your texts, all right, you know, on the
- 22:29Speaker 1: subject to getting to know each other better, like we
- 22:31Speaker 1: were just talking about. I was thinking about this even
- 22:34Speaker 1: before Curtis left that voicemail. I was thinking about this
- 22:36Speaker 1: over the weekend while watching the TV show The Bear.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Are you guys watching? The show? Show is fucking incredible?
- 22:42Speaker 1: I talked about it before season one, but season two
- 22:44Speaker 1: is strong. Anyways, There's this episode about hospitality and about
- 22:50Speaker 1: serving people. And I know a lot of you probably
- 22:54Speaker 1: work or have worked in hospitality. I did when I
- 22:58Speaker 1: was a kid, but I never did it. I never
- 23:00Speaker 1: did it as an adult. I had other versions of
- 23:02Speaker 1: jobs like that when I got to be a young adult.
- 23:06Speaker 1: But there's this great episode on hospitality and serving people,
- 23:09Speaker 1: and it got me thinking, you know, serving specifically, you
- 23:14Speaker 1: know in the television show, it's about serving fans of
- 23:17Speaker 1: the specific restaurant, and it just, you know, just hit me.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Not that I didn't know this or I haven't I
- 23:24Speaker 1: haven't done this before or experienced this on both ends before,
- 23:27Speaker 1: but just how awesome it can be to make people happy,
- 23:32Speaker 1: especially people that you don't know, but who you know
- 23:35Speaker 1: admire you and appreciate what you create, and when you
- 23:38Speaker 1: can surprise them, when you can reward them the joy
- 23:43Speaker 1: that it can bring them. I know that for me
- 23:46Speaker 1: as a fan, when someone, when an artist that I admire,
- 23:50Speaker 1: takes the time to engage with me, it is special
- 23:53Speaker 1: and it still happens to this day. And Disgraceland has
- 23:56Speaker 1: done that for me. It's opened up these conversations with
- 24:00Speaker 1: literal like musical heroes of my icons, like people I
- 24:04Speaker 1: never in a million years would would have dreamt of
- 24:07Speaker 1: meeting or talking to. And I've had a version of
- 24:11Speaker 1: this experience as a fan going back all the way
- 24:14Speaker 1: back to when I was a little kid. I've talked
- 24:15Speaker 1: about this before, and you know, I joke about the
- 24:19Speaker 1: Arrowsmith thing we talked about, we talked about, but I've
- 24:21Speaker 1: had I've had great experiences too where I've met dudes
- 24:25Speaker 1: and bands who I looked up to who were just
- 24:28Speaker 1: so fucking cool to me. And it leaves a mark.
- 24:31Speaker 1: And in this episode of The Bear, they really show that, uh,
- 24:37Speaker 1: you know, and I'm more interested in this concept coming
- 24:40Speaker 1: from the other way, from creator to supporter or to fan. Okay,
- 24:44Speaker 1: when I was playing in bands, it was very easy
- 24:46Speaker 1: to do this sort of thing. It's harder as a
- 24:49Speaker 1: podcaster though. We're so I'm so separated from you guys.
- 24:53Speaker 1: You know, I send out I used to send out
- 24:54Speaker 1: posters and pins and shirts, and I still do that
- 24:56Speaker 1: to some degree, and I always will. It's the DIY.
- 25:00Speaker 1: But I'm trying to find something that's a bit more personal,
- 25:02Speaker 1: a bit more connected. And it's hard. I've found out
- 25:06Speaker 1: in watching this, you know, and watching this episode of
- 25:09Speaker 1: The Bear, I found out that I don't really know
- 25:11Speaker 1: you guys. It's hard to make a personal connection with
- 25:14Speaker 1: you. You know, it's just you know, you know, we have
- 25:18Speaker 1: this this larger connection music. Broadly speaking, you're obsessed with
- 25:22Speaker 1: music like I am. That's what dis Graceland is really about. Sure,
- 25:26Speaker 1: it's about musicians getting way with murder and behaving very badly,
- 25:29Speaker 1: and it's about music, and it's about true crime. But
- 25:31Speaker 1: it's really about the details, the obsessive details, the edge
- 25:35Speaker 1: of your seat, storytelling that that music heads, music obsessives
- 25:38Speaker 1: like yourselves, like like me, that we geek out on.
- 25:42Speaker 1: I know this because I'm you, you are me. We
- 25:44Speaker 1: are the same. But I don't know you, not really,
- 25:47Speaker 1: So how do we get to better know each other?
- 25:48Speaker 1: Every week I come on here and I tell you, guys,
- 25:50Speaker 1: what I'm into. I tell you what I'm listening to,
- 25:53Speaker 1: what I'm reading, and what I'm watching. Some of you
- 25:55Speaker 1: guys text me, write me, dm me. You let me
- 25:58Speaker 1: know what you're what you're into. Mainly around television and film,
- 26:01Speaker 1: we do a lot of that wrap party, but just
- 26:02Speaker 1: generally speaking, I don't know what you guys are into.
- 26:05Speaker 1: I've received some messages quite a bit about some personal
- 26:09Speaker 1: stuff that you guys are going through, and I'm always
- 26:13Speaker 1: happy to engage in that to the extent that I
- 26:15Speaker 1: can and to help out where I can. But I
- 26:17Speaker 1: just want to say I'm here to get to know
- 26:19Speaker 1: you and whatever that means. However we open up this conversation,
- 26:23Speaker 1: I'm not exactly sure, but I'm just letting you know
- 26:26Speaker 1: I'm here for dm me six one seven nine oh
- 26:29Speaker 1: six six six three eight, text me, send me a voicemail.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Just tell me about yourselves, what you're up to. Start with.
- 26:35Speaker 1: You know what you're listening to or when you're listening
- 26:38Speaker 1: to music, when you engage with it, when you listen
- 26:40Speaker 1: to my show, how you engage with it? Whatever you know,
- 26:44Speaker 1: anything like that, some band you're into, some album, some
- 26:47Speaker 1: artists we should cover. You're great with the artists. Suggestions
- 26:50Speaker 1: we're allowsy with them. We get a ton of them.
- 26:52Speaker 1: But just hit me up. Give me the goods so
- 26:54Speaker 1: that I can give you the goods. That's what I'm saying.
- 26:56Speaker 1: I guess, all right, the more I can understand you, guys,
- 26:58Speaker 1: the better I can provide you with content that you need.
- 27:01Speaker 1: All right, doesn't have to be formal. Get at me,
- 27:03Speaker 1: let me know what you're into musically, otherwise whatever, six
- 27:06Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. Now
- 27:09Speaker 1: for your texts. As I dive into the text, just
- 27:12Speaker 1: a quick note. The voicemails I kind of curate, I
- 27:15Speaker 1: pick out. I try to answer them in some sort
- 27:17Speaker 1: of like order that makes sense. I find that answering
- 27:21Speaker 1: the text is a better experience if I don't know
- 27:24Speaker 1: what the fuck I'm doing, so I just do them
- 27:26Speaker 1: in real time. So these are gonna be all over
- 27:28Speaker 1: the place. All right, Here we go, all right? From
- 27:30Speaker 1: the three six, Oh hey, Jake, it is Megan from
- 27:33Speaker 1: the PNW. I don't know what that means. Pacific Northwest.
- 27:37Speaker 1: That's what that means. I'm guessing.
- 27:38Speaker 3: Uh.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Megan goes on to say nwas should have been number
- 27:41Speaker 1: one without hesitation. As for the T swift if factor
- 27:44Speaker 1: I can only speak from my experience as someone who
- 27:47Speaker 1: has always found comfort in her lyrics. Hi fellow gen
- 27:51Speaker 1: x A still unpacking decades of chaos and music has
- 27:54Speaker 1: always been my safe space, lifeblood. All right, Megan, we
- 27:57Speaker 1: got a lot in common. Megan goes on to say here,
- 28:00Speaker 1: as for Taylor Swift, not only do I find her
- 28:02Speaker 1: a masterful storyteller in the way she writes her lyrics,
- 28:05Speaker 1: she's got a genuineness in her oft and rawness and
- 28:08Speaker 1: has relatable experiences to her main target audience. Took my
- 28:12Speaker 1: now twenty two year old to her first ever concert,
- 28:14Speaker 1: which was the Red Tour, and it's been a fun
- 28:16Speaker 1: evolution watching them sort of both grow into themselves. Megan
- 28:21Speaker 1: goes hot to say, this is already long enough, but
- 28:22Speaker 1: since you're also a punk guy who probably does MxPx,
- 28:25Speaker 1: grew up with them. Literally, if you've not listened to
- 28:28Speaker 1: the one rockabilly album Mike Herrera did with a group
- 28:30Speaker 1: name tumble Down, I'd highly recommend you checking it out.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Please never stop what you're doing, looking forward to more
- 28:35Speaker 1: bonus episodes and hearing what's on your mind. Thanks Megan,
- 28:39Speaker 1: that's a perfect text to kick this off. I appreciate it.
- 28:42Speaker 1: We were talking. I was asking, I think in one
- 28:45Speaker 1: of the mini episodes, you know, I was talking about
- 28:48Speaker 1: the Taylor Swift phenomenon, just asking what is it? What
- 28:50Speaker 1: is it that just pulls you in as a fan.
- 28:55Speaker 1: And that's where that came from from Megan, and obviously
- 28:57Speaker 1: thematically she hit on a lot of other stuff here
- 28:59Speaker 1: that we've been doing discussing. So let's keep going the
- 29:02Speaker 1: four h nine, says Hi Jake. It's the honesty that
- 29:05Speaker 1: connects with our hearts and keeps us listening. That goes
- 29:08Speaker 1: for you, Taylor Swift, King, George et cetera. You feel,
- 29:12Speaker 1: we feel your true love for the genre, what you
- 29:15Speaker 1: do and what you are creating. We believe you. That's
- 29:17Speaker 1: the hook that keeps on giving. Keep up the great work,
- 29:20Speaker 1: big fan, Lisa A, Lisa, thank you. I appreciate that, Lisa.
- 29:25Speaker 1: That means a lot. And you know, it's it's funny
- 29:28Speaker 1: as a creator, you don't often stop and go, God,
- 29:31Speaker 1: what what's working? What's making this connection happen? You know,
- 29:35Speaker 1: I tend to stop and ask it about other people,
- 29:38Speaker 1: and I don't often get to think about it in
- 29:40Speaker 1: terms of myself. So it's it's interesting to hear how
- 29:44Speaker 1: you're contextualizing it. Guys, that's true. Text down roll. Let's
- 29:47Speaker 1: keep going here with from the five four oh more
- 29:49Speaker 1: on this hip hop thing says Billboard is full of shit.
- 29:54Speaker 1: I agree with your list. With one edition, two Leve
- 29:56Speaker 1: Crew pushed the limits and made a really good party
- 29:59Speaker 1: hooking up with the music deuces.
- 30:02Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Uh two Leve Crew two Love Crew did a lot.
- 30:06Speaker 1: They did a lot. They're getting an episode at as
- 30:08Speaker 1: Grace and sometimes you and I don't know if they
- 30:09Speaker 1: make it into my top five though, but when that
- 30:11Speaker 1: shit came out forget about it?
- 30:14Speaker 8: All right?
- 30:14Speaker 1: What else? All right? For the seven to one six Hey,
- 30:18Speaker 1: Jake and Crewe discos, et cetera. This last fourth of
- 30:22Speaker 1: July episode struck me nicely. Haven't usually listened to these
- 30:25Speaker 1: extra content episodes, but so engaging. I won't stop. Just
- 30:28Speaker 1: want to say, uh, phone on random in the car
- 30:31Speaker 1: immediately fortunate song came on. Loved it? Still appropriate today?
- 30:35Speaker 1: Cheers all Jeremy from the seven to one to six piece.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Thanks Jeremy, It is still appropriate, isn't it? Fucking great song?
- 30:42Speaker 1: All right? I gotta read this one from Lindsay just
- 30:44Speaker 1: gonna close the book on this sex talk, Lindsay in
- 30:47Speaker 1: the two eight one says, I literally have a sex time, sorry,
- 30:51Speaker 1: a sexy time playlist, and it's just about in order too.
- 30:54Speaker 1: It's a collection of classic sexy alternative songs from the
- 30:58Speaker 1: late nineties that's too sexyes in one text from the
- 31:01Speaker 1: late nineties, and sentimental ones from my eighteen year old
- 31:05Speaker 1: relationship with my husband. Try guessing which is which eighteen
- 31:11Speaker 1: year I don't understand that at last part, but congrats
- 31:13Speaker 1: on eighteen years and still keeping it fresh in the sack, Lindsey,
- 31:17Speaker 1: all right, what do we got here? All Right, we
- 31:21Speaker 1: were talking. I guess I throw over the best five
- 31:23Speaker 1: MC's because that's what this list is. Jay Z, nas
- 31:26Speaker 1: L Cool J, Big L Andre three thousand from the
- 31:29Speaker 1: seven eight one seven eight one I Gotta Do a
- 31:34Speaker 1: Big L Episode five six one. Number one rap group
- 31:38Speaker 1: is the undisputed legendary hardworking Philly's own shore Shot the
- 31:42Speaker 1: Roots and the number one MC Black Thought. Shared the
- 31:45Speaker 1: stage with Black Thought a couple of years ago. Uh
- 31:47Speaker 1: goes on to say thank you for asking. I'm a
- 31:50Speaker 1: fan and discovered the podcast on a madcap sleepless road
- 31:53Speaker 1: trip one night driving from Kentucky to West Palm Beach, Florida.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Love it beautiful down in West Palm Beach. Flow him,
- 32:01Speaker 1: great text, Thank you all right. So we asked about
- 32:03Speaker 1: favorite Fourth of July songs. Born in the USA on
- 32:06Speaker 1: the fourth of July. No, that is not a patriotic anthem.
- 32:09Speaker 1: This is from the three oh three. I'm not a
- 32:11Speaker 1: big country music fan, but I'll take Lee Greenwood's God
- 32:13Speaker 1: Bless the USA or Toby Keith the Angry American. Now
- 32:16Speaker 1: listen here three oh three. I hear you loud and clear.
- 32:20Speaker 1: But America is not beyond criticism, and I'm not piling
- 32:25Speaker 1: on either. That's not what I'm saying. Born in the
- 32:27Speaker 1: USA is a is a song about about a specific
- 32:31Speaker 1: point of view from a specific character that you can
- 32:35Speaker 1: I don't think, you know, Springstey might tell you differently,
- 32:38Speaker 1: but I think if you asked him, I don't even
- 32:40Speaker 1: if you told me something different, I probably call bullshit
- 32:43Speaker 1: on him. I don't think Springsteen meant that as a
- 32:46Speaker 1: anti American cry. I think it was more, you know,
- 32:50Speaker 1: like I said, from the point of view of one character.
- 32:53Speaker 1: That's how he writes songs. And I think when Reagan
- 32:55Speaker 1: adopted it foolishly and without much thought. What was Springsteen
- 33:01Speaker 1: gonna do? But I hear your Fourth of July you
- 33:04Speaker 1: don't want to fuck with anything negative. I get that.
- 33:06Speaker 1: I get that three or three so you can have
- 33:08Speaker 1: your Lee Greenwood and I'll crank born in the USA.
- 33:13Speaker 1: And you know I'm also one of the patriotic stuff
- 33:17Speaker 1: as well. It's not just it's not just all piss
- 33:19Speaker 1: and vinegar. That's all all right, Let's say what do
- 33:21Speaker 1: we get here? From the seven eight one, my favorite
- 33:24Speaker 1: Fourth of July song is American by the Descendants. I
- 33:27Speaker 1: don't know that I've ever heard that. I must have
- 33:30Speaker 1: a right. From the nine to two Oh says, maybe
- 33:33Speaker 1: being at punk keeps you from digging on Phil Linet
- 33:36Speaker 1: and the rest of the boys in Thin Lizzy. Maybe
- 33:38Speaker 1: you think the boys are soft? What the fuck are
- 33:41Speaker 1: you talking about? Nine to us say is maybe knowing
- 33:44Speaker 1: Phil shot Heroin with Sid and Nancy and later formed
- 33:47Speaker 1: a band called the Greedies with the sex pistols won't
- 33:49Speaker 1: inspire you. I don't know what you're talking about. You
- 33:51Speaker 1: seem to have me confused with somebody who doesn't like
- 33:54Speaker 1: Thin Lizzy. That is not me. I love Thin Lizzy. Okay, yeah,
- 34:00Speaker 1: I don't know. Everyone listen to thin Lizzy. I'll take
- 34:03Speaker 1: thin Lizzy over the sex pistols. How's that? How's that?
- 34:06Speaker 1: And shooting heroin does not make you cool in my eyes?
- 34:08Speaker 1: You seem to have that mixed up in your head too.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Somehow is this text even to me? I don't even know?
- 34:13Speaker 1: All right, what else we got? Uh, that's a lot.
- 34:15Speaker 1: That's a lot of texts. I'm gonna jump here. Uh
- 34:18Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 34:20Speaker 1: two text and a voicemail and I read them here,
- 34:23Speaker 1: you know the drill. I'm gonna take a quick break.
- 34:26Speaker 1: It's getting late, and when to come back. I'm gonna
- 34:28Speaker 1: read the recommendations part, all right, the recommendations part. This
- 34:46Speaker 1: is the recommendation's part, the part where we recommend the
- 34:49Speaker 1: things that need recommending. The recommendations part. What I've been
- 34:51Speaker 1: listening to so Billboard magazine, you know all about it. It
- 34:54Speaker 1: got out of my skin. But it's sent me on
- 34:57Speaker 1: this old school hip hop tip. I can't listening to
- 35:00Speaker 1: ninety stuff mainly played my five year old mister Bob
- 35:04Speaker 1: Dobelin Aboud, Delda Funcky, Homo Sapien almost Safian excuse me
- 35:08Speaker 1: on the way to Baseball can today. He nearly shot
- 35:10Speaker 1: his pants laughing, and I you know, most of it
- 35:15Speaker 1: is because he just thinks the name Bob is the
- 35:17Speaker 1: funniest thing that he's ever heard. I have no idea
- 35:19Speaker 1: why he's a weird kid. Coincidentally, perhaps because the universe
- 35:24Speaker 1: is listening while Billboard is under my skin. Do the
- 35:28Speaker 1: Right Thing is on my television, and it was the
- 35:30Speaker 1: other night, and I was an extra reminder to me
- 35:33Speaker 1: to cue up to Fight the Power video by Public Enemy. Great,
- 35:36Speaker 1: great video. You all know the song, but check that
- 35:39Speaker 1: video out. I feel like it gets overlooked. There's a
- 35:43Speaker 1: story there too. What's the story behind that video? It's
- 35:46Speaker 1: so random. Somebody needs to write an oral history on
- 35:49Speaker 1: how that all went down. Or maybe someone could just
- 35:51Speaker 1: write me an email or call in or whatever. Let
- 35:53Speaker 1: me know if they know anything about the making of
- 35:54Speaker 1: the Do the Right Thing video, because it is incredible. Yeah,
- 35:58Speaker 1: lots of hip hop this week. Two hip hop oriented
- 36:00Speaker 1: playlist I've been listening to on Spotify that I want
- 36:02Speaker 1: to pass along to you guys, the Spotify generated I
- 36:05Speaker 1: love my nineties hip hop playlist as basic as it
- 36:07Speaker 1: is it's exactly what you'd expect, and it's fucking glorious.
- 36:11Speaker 1: And you know, back on the Public Enemy tip, it
- 36:13Speaker 1: reminded me of the Spike Lee movie He Got Game
- 36:16Speaker 1: because of that that Public Enemy song. I've never seen
- 36:20Speaker 1: this movie, by the way, I've never seen He Got Game,
- 36:23Speaker 1: but I heard this Public Enemy song before He Got Game. Right,
- 36:25Speaker 1: that's the name of the song. The name of the song,
- 36:27Speaker 1: the thing with Steven Stills, you know what I'm talking about.
- 36:29Speaker 1: It's based on the Buffalo Springfield song. For what it's worth,
- 36:32Speaker 1: I can't stand that fucking song, but I love this version,
- 36:36Speaker 1: this Public Enemy version of it, all right. Came on
- 36:38Speaker 1: in the mix. Music was great. Fucking song is great,
- 36:41Speaker 1: and now I love it. My tastes are constantly changing.
- 36:43Speaker 1: I don't know what to tell you. Check that song
- 36:45Speaker 1: out and let me know. The movie is good. If
- 36:46Speaker 1: you have seen it, I'm probably gonna watch it before
- 36:48Speaker 1: you get back to me. But I mean I'm intrigued now,
- 36:50Speaker 1: all right. Another hip hop related playlist I've been digging
- 36:53Speaker 1: on is the hip Hop and R and B Jazz
- 36:55Speaker 1: covers playlist. That's it. That's what it's called. The hip
- 36:58Speaker 1: Hop and R and b Jazz cover playlist on Spotify.
- 37:02Speaker 1: It's not an official thing. Some user made it. Parts
- 37:04Speaker 1: of it are awesome. It's exactly what it sounds like.
- 37:07Speaker 1: It's full jazz bands covering nineties hip hop songs. It's
- 37:10Speaker 1: almost all instrumental, no vocals, no samples. It's fucking great
- 37:14Speaker 1: and all this public enemy. You know, it sent me
- 37:16Speaker 1: back to the Last Poets. And if you guys don't
- 37:20Speaker 1: know the Last Poets, I encourage you to search out
- 37:24Speaker 1: the Last Poets, specifically their self titled album from nineteen seventy.
- 37:28Speaker 1: This is pre hip hop, but it is absolutely the
- 37:31Speaker 1: foundation of hip hop, the foundation of the hip hop house.
- 37:35Speaker 1: The self titled Last Poets album. It is heavy and
- 37:38Speaker 1: it is freaking amazing. Check it out. If you have
- 37:40Speaker 1: not already what nineties hip hop am I missing? If
- 37:43Speaker 1: you've been following me on Instagram at Disgrace lampod, listening

- 37:52Speaker 1: be checking out. I used to be into this stuff
- 37:55Speaker 1: so much more when I was younger, stuff like the Goats,
- 37:57Speaker 1: and I mean, I'm not going to pretend I was
- 38:00Speaker 1: a crazy hip hop kid. I wasn't, but I was
- 38:01Speaker 1: into some weird stuff and now I've largely either forgotten
- 38:05Speaker 1: about it, I'd never get reminded of it, or I
- 38:07Speaker 1: didn't know about it in the first place. Six one seven,
- 38:09Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight. Give me some
- 38:11Speaker 1: nineties hip hop recommendations. Let me know again. Let's stay
