Speaker 4: the newsroom. I'm going to go to Amanda, and Amanda,
• 2:19
  Speaker 4: it's yours.
• 2:19
Speaker 5: Hey Dave, good morning.
• 2:20
Speaker 6: We're glad to be here this morning, and of course
• 2:22
Speaker 6: we've got some big news. We're joined out by Jeff Jenkins,
• 2:25
Speaker 6: who's been following that trial, that Knack County trial about
• 2:28
Speaker 6: the children who were rescued from the barn in the
• 2:31
Speaker 6: Cistonville area, and we've heard so much difficult testimony.
• 2:34
Speaker 5: Over the last few days.
• 2:36
Speaker 6: If you're just getting caught up on this one, of course,
• 2:38
Speaker 6: these children were found in twenty twenty three living in
• 2:41
Speaker 6: a barn. Prosecutors alleged that they were being forced to
• 2:44
Speaker 6: do hard labor. They didn't sit down much, they kept
• 2:48
Speaker 6: their hands above their head. The one sibling has been
• 2:52
Speaker 6: described as basically being a warden to one of the
• 2:54
Speaker 6: younger siblings. Yesterday was tough in the courtroom. There was
• 2:58
Speaker 6: a lot of video surveillance. What are we expecting to
• 3:01
  Speaker 6: hear today?
• 3:02
Speaker 7: Okay, yeah, thanks Amanda, good morning. Good to see what
• 3:06
Speaker 7: we're going to hear in The first witness here is
• 3:09
Speaker 7: going to be a person from the Fusion Center that's
• 3:13
Speaker 7: going to give testimony as a Genie Whitefeather, one of
• 3:16
Speaker 7: the two people charged along with her husband, Donald ray Lance.
• 3:19
Speaker 7: They've gone over her cell phone, right, so they'll be
• 3:23
Speaker 7: I'm assuming here a little bit your text messages, you know,
• 3:27
Speaker 7: just any cell phone correspondence that might be on her
• 3:30
Speaker 7: cellph or maybe photos, maybe video, I mean, you know,
• 3:33
Speaker 7: everything from the cell phone. As the state continues kind
• 3:35
Speaker 7: of to build their case that this wasn't just a
• 3:38
Speaker 7: regular family with adopted kids, and so that you know,
• 3:41
Speaker 7: that's the state, that's really the state's case. You know,
• 3:43
Speaker 7: this wasn't, according to the state, you know, this wasn't
• 3:48
Speaker 7: a man and a woman who adopted kids, you know,
• 3:52
Speaker 7: to care for them in the proper way. But this
• 3:56
Speaker 7: was they adopted them for basically their own gain and
• 4:00
Speaker 7: own control, and that would that's their evidence. I mean that,
• 4:03
Speaker 7: I mean that's the case they're trying to make here
• 4:05
Speaker 7: for the jury, and the.
• 4:06
Speaker 6: Defense on the other hand, is pointing out that these
• 4:09
Speaker 6: are children who had some mental health issues prior to
• 4:12
Speaker 6: their adoption, after their adoption, and these are just two
• 4:15
Speaker 6: struggling parents who are doing the very best that they can.
• 4:18
Speaker 6: We saw some interaction with them. We've seen some interaction
• 4:21
Speaker 6: with them. It's been difficult, though to watch some of
• 4:25
Speaker 6: this video as you watch these children sleep on cardboard
• 4:29
Speaker 6: as a pillow, sleeping bag on a concrete floor. They
• 4:33
Speaker 6: sleep on sheets. We've seen some other things, especially that
• 4:37
Speaker 6: moment when the detective from the Sheriff's department went into
• 4:41
Speaker 6: that building and the kids at first thought they were
• 4:43
Speaker 6: in trouble, and then they started easing up as they
• 4:46
Speaker 6: realized that they weren't necessarily in trouble, but perhaps somebody
• 4:49
Speaker 6: was there to help them. What yesterday did you take
• 4:55
Speaker 6: away from the conversation about CPS two. We heard a
• 4:58
Speaker 6: little bit about trying to get in contact with CPS.
• 5:00
Speaker 7: Yeah, it didn't seem I mean, didn't sound like there
• 5:03
Speaker 7: was quick response. Now we know the history of CPS,
• 5:06
Speaker 7: I mean overloaded different things, and so it's it's almost
• 5:10
Speaker 7: kind of the same thing that we've heard you know
• 5:12
Speaker 7: that that uh over over the last several years. Uh,
• 5:16
Speaker 7: you know, not not very quick response when they reached out,
• 5:20
Speaker 7: when they reached out to them. I think this video
• 5:22
Speaker 7: getting back to that just for a second. You know
• 5:24
Speaker 7: this when you can and you can show a juror
• 5:27
Speaker 7: something more than now, you know, testimony can be very riveting,
• 5:32
Speaker 7: you know from people. But also now you add that
• 5:35
Speaker 7: that they have this surveillance video. There were surveillance cameras
• 5:38
Speaker 7: on this property, in rooms in the shed in you know,
• 5:43
Speaker 7: in the houses, in the house. And now jurors, although
• 5:46
Speaker 7: they'll have to go in the recollection, they're not they
• 5:47
Speaker 7: won't be able to go look at the video when
• 5:49
Speaker 7: jury deliberance deliberations start. They'll have to go with what
• 5:52
Speaker 7: they remember about seeing it. But again, you've got another
• 5:55
Speaker 7: tool if you're a juror, I mean, if the prosecution,
• 5:59
Speaker 7: you know, what a great advantage to them that they
• 6:01
Speaker 7: have something to show them.
• 6:03
Speaker 6: Sure, and these cameras were were the Genie and Donald's cameras.
• 6:07
Speaker 5: So that's what we saw.
• 6:09
Speaker 6: And there were some questions about how long the footage
• 6:11
Speaker 6: you know, they've been saving it. But these kids are
• 6:12
Speaker 6: very cognizant of those cameras that were there holding up
• 6:15
Speaker 6: a sheet every time they had to use the restroom
• 6:16
Speaker 6: when an alarm would go off.
• 6:18
  Speaker 5: So we're seeing a lot.
• 6:19
Speaker 6: We're expecting to hear from some of those children who
• 6:21
Speaker 6: will testify, and so we're just kind of waiting to
• 6:24
Speaker 6: see when that will happen.
• 6:25
Speaker 7: And then then we'll hear the defense's case. You know,
• 6:27
Speaker 7: there's two sides. You know, defense will try to say
• 6:30
Speaker 7: there is reasonable doubt. I mean, they'll mark plants, you know,
• 6:34
Speaker 7: very skilled attorney. He'll be putting on he'll be putting
• 6:36
Speaker 7: on the defense. And so we'll see what happens when
• 6:39
Speaker 7: we get to that point, asking.
• 6:40
Speaker 6: Some questions about bringing food and things like that to
• 6:42
Speaker 6: the kids, which which we did see in some cases yesterday.
• 6:44
Speaker 5: Jeff, thank you so much. We appreciate it.
• 6:46
  Speaker 7: Seen.
• 6:47
  Speaker 5: Thank you too.
• 6:48
Speaker 4: But Dave Island showing five. Any line is brought to
• 6:50
Speaker 4: you a part by your hometown baseball team, The Charles
• 6:52
Speaker 4: the Dirty Birds. Maybe one a time now, but before
• 6:54
Speaker 4: you know it, they're'll be playing baseball over go Mark Ballpark.

Speaker 4: Check out its twenty twenty five Dirty Birds schedule, plus
• 6:59

• 7:03
Speaker 4: Let's bring in Handah Gardner from the gonaal Chars and
• 7:04
Speaker 4: you main association with this week's Adopt Me please pet
• 7:08
  Speaker 4: of the Wake.
• 7:08
Speaker 3: Hannah, Good morning, Good morning.
• 7:11
  Speaker 8: How are you.
• 7:12
Speaker 5: I'm doing fine, and it's Amanda Baron.
• 7:14
Speaker 6: We're so glad to have you on this morning. I
• 7:16
Speaker 6: know you guys have had a busy couple weeks. How
• 7:17
Speaker 6: are things calming down now that the weather, the snow
• 7:20
Speaker 6: is finally starting to melt.
• 7:22
Speaker 8: Oh goodness. Well, we've been, of course trying to clean
• 7:25
Speaker 8: up as much in the parking lot as hospital because
• 7:28
Speaker 8: it's been so icy there. But it has been really,
• 7:32
Speaker 8: really good. I guess you could say we've been getting
• 7:36
Speaker 8: out a good amount of animals for adoptions and stuff
• 7:39
Speaker 8: like that, but of course we always would love to
• 7:42
Speaker 8: get out more. It is pretty slow at this time
• 7:46
Speaker 8: of the year. However, we are having our adoption special
• 7:49
Speaker 8: right now, so definitely come on out. It's pick your
• 7:51
Speaker 8: price as long as it is a dollar or whatever
• 7:54
  Speaker 8: you would like.
• 7:55
Speaker 6: After that, that's wonderful. So when you hear about those specials,
• 7:58
Speaker 6: I've got to wonder, are you guys at capacity? I
• 8:01
Speaker 6: know you always are and I wonder you hear the
• 8:03
Speaker 6: special like that, is it a bad situation right now
• 8:06
Speaker 6: or is it manageable?
• 8:08
Speaker 8: So right now I think it is manageable. However, we
• 8:11
Speaker 8: have been a kind of max capacity for a while now.
• 8:14
Speaker 8: It seems like we were at like critical capacity for
• 8:17
Speaker 8: a minute, and then we got it down to like
• 8:19
Speaker 8: just I mean still critical but mac capacity, and then
• 8:24
Speaker 8: now it's kind of just Peter Tauton where we have
• 8:28
Speaker 8: some space here and there, and then we don't have
• 8:30
Speaker 8: space at all, and then we have some. It just
• 8:32
Speaker 8: comes and goes right now, which is not necessarily like
• 8:35
Speaker 8: super normal. I think, if I'm thinking right around this
• 8:39
Speaker 8: time each year, we haven't really been as fool as
• 8:41
Speaker 8: we've been this year. We've been pretty steadily full all
• 8:43
Speaker 8: year well twenty twenty four into into now.
• 8:47
Speaker 6: Yeah, so let's talk about how people can help as
• 8:49
Speaker 6: far as reducing that capacity.
• 8:52
Speaker 4: And our dog this week is.
• 8:54
Speaker 6: Slim Jim and he is precious And Dave, I know
• 8:56
Speaker 6: you have this QUTI posted. Tell us a little bit
• 8:59
  Speaker 6: about Slim Jim.
• 9:01
Speaker 8: Yeah, well, Slim Jim, he is the sweetest little guy.
• 9:06
Speaker 8: He's around two years old, around twenty seven ish pounds,
• 9:10
Speaker 8: so he's like the perfect size dog for somebody who's
• 9:13
Speaker 8: not looking for like a bigger dog or not necessarily
• 9:17
Speaker 8: even a small dog, but just someone who's just like
• 9:20
Speaker 8: just the perfect fit honestly, I mean, he's the perfect
• 9:23
Speaker 8: little size. But he's muted already. He's ready to go home.
• 9:26
  Speaker 8: He's vaccinated, a microchip, so he's he's good to go
• 9:30
Speaker 8: on all of his medical stuff as of right now.
• 9:33
Speaker 8: Someone actually I believed had dropped our dropped this little
• 9:36
Speaker 8: baby off at our gate and our man officer brought
• 9:39
Speaker 8: him in, so we definitely definitely got him in, got
• 9:43
Speaker 8: him said, and got him some water, some medical stuff,
• 9:47
Speaker 8: and he is good to go now. And he is
• 9:49
Speaker 8: a foster candidate. So that is another way that you
• 9:51
Speaker 8: can help out. If you're not ready to adopt, you
• 9:54
Speaker 8: can take an animal out to foster and see how
• 9:58
Speaker 8: they do in your home. Maybe you fall in love
• 10:00
Speaker 8: and hopefully he's fall in love, but if not, we
• 10:04
Speaker 8: appreciate all of the fosters that come out and help
• 10:06
Speaker 8: out because all of these animals do need to get
• 10:08
Speaker 8: out of the shelter for just a minute, and it
• 10:11
Speaker 8: definitely helps us with the adoption process because a lot
• 10:14
Speaker 8: of people are are iffy about fostering, but it definitely
• 10:17
Speaker 8: helps out with the animals.
• 10:19
Speaker 6: Well, once you get it in your home. I have
• 10:20
Speaker 6: a cat like that. It's like, once she showed up,
• 10:23
Speaker 6: I was like, nope.
• 10:24
Speaker 5: She's ours. That's how it goes. He doesn't.
• 10:26
Speaker 6: I can't tell what kind of dog it is, but
• 10:28
Speaker 6: it almost has this little corky face, almost just short
• 10:31
  Speaker 6: and stout.
• 10:31
Speaker 5: Maybe is that what I'm saying?
• 10:33
Speaker 8: Mmm, he does. He kind of looks like that. We're
• 10:36
Speaker 8: not one hundred percent sure what he is, but everybody
• 10:39
Speaker 8: makes your best guesses because he does look like he's
• 10:41
Speaker 8: got those like almost corky looking ears too or something.
• 10:44
  Speaker 8: But he's he's a cutie and he I will say,
• 10:48
Speaker 8: he does not prefer to have kitties as friends. He's
• 10:51
Speaker 8: not very fond of the kiddies, so just other dogs
• 10:56
Speaker 8: as friends. And he likes the calmer ones as friends
• 10:58
Speaker 8: because he is kind of shy, bashful himself. But once
• 11:02
Speaker 8: he warms up, he is a great, great sweet boy.
• 11:04
Speaker 8: I mean, he was sitting in our lobby yesterday just
• 11:07
Speaker 8: happy as could be. I mean, he's he's definitely one
• 11:10
Speaker 8: to come out and visit with.
• 11:11
Speaker 5: Oh we can't wait.
• 11:12
Speaker 6: I'm just so glad. I'm so grateful for the work
• 11:13
Speaker 6: that you guys do. I know the community is and
• 11:15
Speaker 6: you guys stayed the night when the weather was bad
• 11:17
Speaker 6: a couple of weeks ago, fun sleepover that I'm sure
• 11:19
Speaker 6: you'll talk about for some time now, but no doubt
• 11:22
Speaker 6: those animals appreciated it as well.
• 11:25
Speaker 4: And again, well, we do want to remind you that
• 11:27
Speaker 4: we do have the picture posted of slim Jim. He
• 11:29
Speaker 4: is available on my Facebook page to stave aland Radio
• 11:32
Speaker 4: and also at dave A seventy on x. The artist
• 11:34
Speaker 4: formerly known as Twitter slim Jim, two years old, twenty
• 11:37
Speaker 4: seven pounds, neuter vaccinated microchip dropped off at the shelter
• 11:41
Speaker 4: prefers calmer dogs, not so much cats. Not so much cats,
• 11:45
Speaker 4: but he's good with other dogs. And you got this
• 11:47
Speaker 4: pick your price thing going on, meaning basically, as you explained,
• 11:51
Speaker 4: you know, you make him an offer and he is
• 11:53
Speaker 4: he's yours, Hannah. I And by the way, Hannah, you
• 11:56
Speaker 4: got a text because you always have a text here.
• 11:58
Speaker 4: It says, please remind people to look out for frostbite
• 12:01
Speaker 4: on our animals. Paws and pawpads. Talk about that briefly.
• 12:03
Speaker 8: It's a thing yeah, yes, absolutely, definitely keep an eye.
• 12:08
Speaker 8: I always say, no matter what's the wather it is,
• 12:10
Speaker 8: I'm a paranoid mama when it comes to my animals,
• 12:13
Speaker 8: so I'm always checking. But their paws are definitely something
• 12:17
Speaker 8: that you want to check if you're taking them on
• 12:19
Speaker 8: walks in the snow or letting them out even for
• 12:21
Speaker 8: a little bit, and just keeping an eye on that.
• 12:25
Speaker 8: And also definitely keep in mind that the salt that
• 12:28
Speaker 8: the salt trucks and stuff they're out can also affect
• 12:31
Speaker 8: their pallpads and stuff. They do make pet safe ones,
• 12:34
Speaker 8: so if you have like a porch or stairs or something,
• 12:36
Speaker 8: you can definitely get some pet safe ones. I think
• 12:38
Speaker 8: they sell them at most pet stores as well, so
• 12:41
Speaker 8: definitely check out that as well.
• 12:42
Speaker 6: You know one other thing I just want to ask
• 12:43
Speaker 6: you about real fast. Next week we're going to be
• 12:45
Speaker 6: have temperatures. Spencer Atkins is predicting like negative two next week,
• 12:49
Speaker 6: and I just think about some of these animals that
• 12:51
Speaker 6: might potentially be outside, the strays or or somebody you
• 12:54
Speaker 6: know who who maybe has an outdoor animal. What is
• 12:57
Speaker 6: your best advice if somebody sees an animal that might
• 13:01
Speaker 6: be in distress and need some help.
• 13:04
Speaker 8: Yeah, So of course you can always call our intake
• 13:08
Speaker 8: department and they can give you all the resources. You
• 13:10
Speaker 8: can come up and we can give you all the resources.
• 13:13
Speaker 8: I mean, if it's a stray dog. Of course, it
• 13:16
Speaker 8: just depends on our admissions department. I'm not one hundred
• 13:19
Speaker 8: percent sure how that whole situation works with the admission department,
• 13:23
Speaker 8: but you can definitely reach out to them for resources,
• 13:26
Speaker 8: and we could definitely let you know what we can
• 13:27
Speaker 8: do to help out. They're cats out there as well, dogs,
• 13:32
Speaker 8: all of them, but the cats even have, like we
• 13:35
Speaker 8: have some resources that we could help you out with,
• 13:36
Speaker 8: some tips and things that you could buy, things that
• 13:38
Speaker 8: we could give you to help out with, like hey,
• 13:41
  Speaker 8: stuff like that.
• 13:43
Speaker 6: But hey is better than blankets and things like that,
• 13:45
Speaker 6: because it will freeze. So we don't want people to
• 13:47
Speaker 6: create these habitats and then have them be cold. So
• 13:50
Speaker 6: it's and we all have to take it upon ourselves, right,
• 13:52

Speaker 8: Yes, of course that is very very very true. We

Speaker 8: the animals helps with the shelter as well, because a
• 14:17
Speaker 8: lot of those animals are if maybe you didn't help them,
• 14:20
Speaker 8: may end up at the shelter, and that's not necessarily
• 14:23
Speaker 8: bad or anything, but the shelter is not a home
• 14:26
Speaker 8: for an animal, so we definitely want to get them
• 14:28
Speaker 8: out and into a home and warm and cozy for
• 14:31
  Speaker 8: the winter.
• 14:32
Speaker 6: Well, we certainly appreciate everything that you and your team

• 18:41
Speaker 4: Sean Taylor and studio.
• 18:43
Speaker 6: Yes, Sean, good morning, We're glad to have you here.
• 18:44
Speaker 6: Good morning, City Councilman at Large. I feel like I
• 18:47
Speaker 6: see you all the time I'm around.
• 18:49
Speaker 5: You are around. Let's add too, Hey, thanks for being here.
• 18:52
Speaker 6: Let's talk about the Municipal Auditorium, because you know it
• 18:54
Speaker 6: was about it was about this time last year that
• 18:56
Speaker 6: it was realizing the Municipal Auditorium in Charleston, which is
• 18:59
Speaker 6: such a great an iconic place in the city of Charleston,
• 19:03
Speaker 6: had some issues going on there. Talk a little bit
• 19:06
Speaker 6: about what is going on inside the building, and nobody's
• 19:09
Speaker 6: really been in there except for officials and engineers in
• 19:11
Speaker 6: the last eleven months.
• 19:13
Speaker 3: That's right and my understanding of it. I just joined
• 19:15
Speaker 3: city council two years ago, so some of this investigation
• 19:18
Speaker 3: started before I was involved in city council. However, I
• 19:21
Speaker 3: do know Adam Crayson very well. He's a personal friend
• 19:24
Speaker 3: and I respect him deeply professionally, and he's a ZMM
• 19:26
Speaker 3: Architects and his firm was commissioned to do a study
• 19:31
Speaker 3: of the Municiplaudatorium and zmm's preliminary report is available to
• 19:37
Speaker 3: the public, and I sent a copy to Day this
• 19:39
Speaker 3: morning to so to refresh people's recollection of the condition
• 19:42
Speaker 3: of the building. It's essentially functionally not usable. It's not safe.
• 19:47
Speaker 3: There's no automatic sprinkler system, there's no carbon monoxide system.
• 19:52
Speaker 3: Electrical issues, electrical issues, functional issues. Even more importantly to me,
• 19:58
Speaker 3: I noticed in the report that stantial portion of approxy
• 20:02
Speaker 3: approaching seventy percent of the building. It is under the floodplane.
• 20:05
Speaker 3: Even the stage is under the floodplane. So even if
• 20:07
Speaker 3: we were to take on a complete rehabilitation of the building,
• 20:11
Speaker 3: that would have to be done. I mean, it would
• 20:13
Speaker 3: be a whole new building. So at this point, I
• 20:15
Speaker 3: think what the consideration is. There's there's been an expression
• 20:19
Speaker 3: of interest about preserving the facade.
• 20:21
Speaker 6: So that's an art deco facade. Sorry interrupts, And that
• 20:25
Speaker 6: is part of what is unique about this time period
• 20:29
Speaker 6: and this and this in this building.
• 20:31
Speaker 5: And that's the question.
• 20:32
Speaker 6: So it's like, do you spend the money to renovate
• 20:34
Speaker 6: this existing building or do you spend just a little
• 20:37
Speaker 6: bit more money according to the reports, and go ahead
• 20:39
Speaker 6: and build a new one exactly.
• 20:42
Speaker 3: And that's I think that's really the perspective of counseling
• 20:45
Speaker 3: those other interested parties, even the interested parties of the community,
• 20:48
Speaker 3: is I'm going to be presumptuous and say we all
• 20:52
Speaker 3: understand that the building itself is non functional. I can
• 20:55
Speaker 3: recall attendant events with Harry Knock Junior where he said
• 20:59
Speaker 3: from the stage that the feedback from the stage was
• 21:02
Speaker 3: all made it almost he couldn't perform. Well, that's difficult,
• 21:05
Speaker 3: it's very difficult. So beyond that, now it's really a
• 21:08
Speaker 3: consideration of is it worth preserving the Art Deco facade?
• 21:13
  Speaker 11: Okay?
• 21:14
Speaker 3: And that's why in Finance Committee we approved an expenditure
• 21:19
Speaker 3: for an architecture firm to do an evaluation as to
• 21:22
  Speaker 3: its functional viability.
• 21:23
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 21:24
Speaker 6: And so there was a study done, and so now
• 21:26
Speaker 6: there's this talk of another study, and that's that's kind
• 21:30
Speaker 6: of a point where where you're wondering if that second
• 21:32
  Speaker 6: study needs done.
• 21:33
Speaker 3: That's right, and that's what you know. I think the
• 21:34
Speaker 3: reason I'm here today is that when this came up
• 21:36
Speaker 3: in Finance Committee, I asked a lot of questions. I
• 21:38
Speaker 3: asked questions of the city manager and other other parties,
• 21:42
Speaker 3: other members of the administration. You know, what, what why
• 21:46
Speaker 3: are we taking this next step? And I think it's
• 21:48
Speaker 3: a matter of just of doing our due diligence. It
• 21:51
Speaker 3: is a substantial expenditure of money, but it is also
• 21:53
Speaker 3: an amount that mister Crason anticipated that we would have
• 21:56
Speaker 3: to spend. It was in his initial report and it
• 21:58
Speaker 3: was also in the initial Select Committee. He said that
• 22:02
Speaker 3: would be an approximation of what it would take to
• 22:04
Speaker 3: make that investigation. So that's the next step, and I
• 22:07
Speaker 3: understand that's going to start very promptly. We should have
• 22:09
Speaker 3: an answer promptly, and once we have that answer, I
• 22:12
Speaker 3: think it's time to move forward. We really need that facility.
• 22:14
Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a place where people have so many memories.
• 22:16
Speaker 6: I went to a concert there just a couple of
• 22:18
Speaker 6: years ago, and also you know, graduations and ballet recitals
• 22:22
Speaker 6: and all of those different things.
• 22:24
Speaker 5: People have so many memories there.
• 22:25
Speaker 6: And so I just want to ask you, what are
• 22:27
Speaker 6: they hoping to find in a second study that they
• 22:30
Speaker 6: didn't find in that.
• 22:31
  Speaker 3: First Well, I think that's a great question. That's really
• 22:33
Speaker 3: beyond my knowledge base. You know, that's really a question
• 22:36
Speaker 3: for Adam or an architect. But the question is, if
• 22:39
Speaker 3: it is preserved, what's the actual functional use of the facade.
• 22:43
Speaker 3: I mean it's pretty visually from the side, from the outside,
• 22:46
Speaker 3: but structurally, what does it provide functionally? And that's my
• 22:51
Speaker 3: understanding is, first of all, can it be preserved? Should
• 22:53
Speaker 3: it be preserved? If it does, how can it be
• 22:57
Speaker 3: combined into the rest of a new facility or refurbished facility.
• 23:01
Speaker 3: So that's what we're hoping, that's what we were not
• 23:03
Speaker 3: hoping to find out. They're gonna tell us find out. Yeah,
• 23:05
  Speaker 3: that's exactly right.
• 23:06
Speaker 4: It's signed thirty to Day Island showing five eighty line.
• 23:08
Speaker 4: Brought to part by Jute for the best and security
• 23:11

• 23:14
Speaker 4: of Tay's Valley visit protected by Jude dot Com. We're
• 23:16
Speaker 4: talking to Charleston City Councilman Sean Taylor. I have a
• 23:19
Speaker 4: text here for your counsel. Would the Municipal Auditorium be
• 23:22
Speaker 4: an Art Deco facade with the rest being a glass
• 23:26
Speaker 4: box that would look like a monstrosity?
• 23:28
  Speaker 3: Oh, I look, I respect those opinions. I think I
• 23:32
Speaker 3: think it's reasonable to anticipate that if and when this happens,
• 23:37
Speaker 3: it's going to be asked esthetically pleasing. Now we all
• 23:40
Speaker 3: know nobody. You can't you please all the people all
• 23:44
Speaker 3: the time. And as I drove down here to your
• 23:46
Speaker 3: office today, I recalled even when the Clay Center was built,
• 23:49
Speaker 3: there were there were people that did not like the design,
• 23:52
Speaker 3: the aesthetics of the Clay Center. It's just the way
• 23:55
Speaker 3: it is, you know. That's the way you can't fit
• 23:57
Speaker 3: all those needs. Now, would it be a glass box monstrosity?
• 24:00
  Speaker 3: I don't think anybody wants that. Visually, I think there's
• 24:03
Speaker 3: going to be plans that are offered and due diligence
• 24:05
Speaker 3: done and vetting done so that we have a visually
• 24:09
Speaker 3: pleasing and functional building. I mean, that's all our goal.
• 24:11
Speaker 3: We want that for all of us.
• 24:13
Speaker 6: You think about the space sizes here, that's a coveted
• 24:18
Speaker 6: size for a location.
• 24:20
Speaker 5: It's about three to five thousand people.
• 24:22
Speaker 3: It's about thirty five hundred.
• 24:23
Speaker 5: Right, okay, and so it's cozy.
• 24:26
Speaker 6: The Clay Center a little cozier at about eighteen hundred people,
• 24:29
Speaker 6: and then the Charleston Colsium and Convenience Center, of course
• 24:32
Speaker 6: we know can hold you know, up to ten thousand people.
• 24:36
Speaker 6: I think of that number even more as we say
• 24:38
Speaker 6: there's got to be there's got to be more space
• 24:40
Speaker 6: than that. But we you just think about the way
• 24:41
Speaker 6: they can figure people in for concerts and things like that.
• 24:44
Speaker 6: So this is an investment because artists want a facility
• 24:50
  Speaker 6: of the size.
• 24:51
Speaker 3: May I give you an example, absolutely? All right? So
• 24:54
Speaker 3: just an example. I'm dating myself here, but back when
• 24:58
Speaker 3: I was in high school, I saw sticks on the
• 25:00
Speaker 3: Paradise Theater tour all right, sold out in the in
• 25:04
Speaker 3: the coliseum. I think it was the last festival seating
• 25:08
Speaker 3: concert that was helping me in the coliseum. Last performance
• 25:14
Speaker 3: I saw in the municipal auditorium was Sticks Wow, all right,
• 25:17
Speaker 3: with approximately thirty five hundred people. So when I talked
• 25:20
Speaker 3: to Patrick Leahy got talked to other facilities administrators regionally,
• 25:25
Speaker 3: you have artists on their way up and artists on
• 25:27
Speaker 3: their way down. Okay, so you see, you have these
• 25:29
Speaker 3: wonderful artists that are growing in popularity in the zay Zenith.
• 25:33
Speaker 3: Then hopefully they move into the coliseum for their next deportment, right,
• 25:36
Speaker 3: and then as they get later in the career, the
• 25:37
Speaker 3: people that appeal maybe to me or you or somebody
• 25:39
Speaker 3: else on their way back down later in their career
• 25:42
Speaker 3: and Sticks put on a remarkable, absolutely fantastic show. But
• 25:45
Speaker 3: they draw thirty five hundred people now, not fourteen thousand.
• 25:49
Speaker 3: So we need that facility. I'll give you another example
• 25:53
Speaker 3: prior to the pandemic. I believe I saw the Bargatzi, right,
• 25:56
Speaker 3: he was in the municipal auditorium. Well, this is now
• 25:59
Speaker 3: person whose careers absolutely zenith. Well, now he's going to
• 26:02
Speaker 3: be in the coliseum, right.
• 26:03
Speaker 4: But there are a lot of comedians though, I will
• 26:05
Speaker 4: say this guy jumping here, there are comedians that actually
• 26:07
Speaker 4: prefer the smaller. They did this that I saw Rodney
• 26:10
Speaker 4: Carrington there a couple of years, a lot of the uh.
• 26:14
Speaker 4: And I know when we went in the situation with
• 26:15
Speaker 4: Kevin Hart, if you remember that, he he did not
• 26:18
Speaker 4: you know, uh, he wanted to stay in a facility
• 26:21
Speaker 4: of that size. Man.
• 26:22
Speaker 3: I few one more example, ye Dave Chappelle. When Dave
• 26:26
Speaker 3: Chappelle was here, they look for facilities that size these
• 26:29
Speaker 3: national international comedians. But because of the condition of the facilities,
• 26:34
Speaker 3: and with all due respect to mister Chappelle, I think
• 26:36
Speaker 3: this is true for other artists. He stayed in his
• 26:38
Speaker 3: tour bus until the until the show began, until he
• 26:43
Speaker 3: was called the station and immediately exit and went back
• 26:45
Speaker 3: to his bus. The facilities available to the artists are
• 26:48
Speaker 3: just so substandard they won't use them. We're missing. Even
• 26:51
Speaker 3: prior to closing the facility, as I understand it, we
• 26:53
Speaker 3: were missing artists and says we just can't perform there.
• 26:55
Speaker 3: I can't put my client in that building.
• 26:58
Speaker 5: It's a corner stone, it really is.
• 27:00
Speaker 6: And I think that the family memories there, in addition
• 27:03
Speaker 6: to the memories that people create when they go to
• 27:05
Speaker 6: see those shows like Chappelle, you know, like stix like
• 27:08
Speaker 6: you still remember that's why these facilities are so great.
• 27:11
Speaker 6: And so it sits right next to the Federal Courthouse,
• 27:13
Speaker 6: so there is that aesthetic.
• 27:15
Speaker 5: You know, what are you going to go for? And
• 27:17
Speaker 5: so this can be an exciting time.
• 27:18
Speaker 6: The question now is what are we going to find
• 27:20
Speaker 6: out in that second story And that's a great question
• 27:21
Speaker 6: that we need to follow up on for sure as
• 27:24
Speaker 6: we continue to watch what this study will reveal to
• 27:26
Speaker 6: us and see what the next step is. So the
• 27:29
Speaker 6: bottom line here is what would you do as a
• 27:31
  Speaker 6: council member?
• 27:32
Speaker 5: What do you want to see?
• 27:33
Speaker 3: How well, let's see the report and let's discuss it publicly.
• 27:36
Speaker 3: We want to see if it's viable to preserve and
• 27:38
Speaker 3: if so, what would be the cost and how to
• 27:40
Speaker 3: fit it functionally on the property. If you look at
• 27:42
  Speaker 3: the property, I mean, I'm an architect, but there's a
• 27:44
Speaker 3: substantial piece that faces the Virginia Street side that's this sidewalk,
• 27:48
Speaker 3: that's space that's really on you space. So we'll see
• 27:51
Speaker 3: and you know, we're going to make that public. We're
• 27:53
Speaker 3: going to have more public discussion about it, but we're
• 27:55
Speaker 3: not going to belabor it. We're ready to make decisions
• 27:57
  Speaker 3: and move forward.
• 27:58
Speaker 5: Yeah, I know that space sometimes.
• 27:59
Speaker 6: I ever remember or the concert I was at the

• 28:04
Speaker 5: So maybe that's something that can be a part of.
• 28:07
Speaker 3: This new Amanda. It's because there's no concessions inside. There's
• 28:10
Speaker 3: no space for it. So we're putting tents outside, putting
• 28:13
Speaker 3: people out in forty degree cold because there's no concessions.
• 28:17
Speaker 3: There's there's no room for it. So that's part of it.
• 28:19
Speaker 3: But we're on the facade and we're ready to go
• 28:21
  Speaker 3: for it.

• 32:36
Speaker 6: I'm sure weekends are a bit different now after taking
• 32:38
Speaker 6: over as a Knon County commissioner. You had your first
• 32:41
Speaker 6: meeting just about a week ago and now you're about
• 32:44
  Speaker 6: two weeks in.
• 32:45
  Speaker 5: How's it going.
• 32:47
Speaker 11: It is exciting. It is fast in a sense because.
• 32:53
Speaker 14: You know, what I compare it to is being Secretary
• 32:55
Speaker 14: of State, and what I've noticed is obviously more hands
• 33:00
Speaker 14: on as county commissioner. I thought, oh, you know, when
• 33:03
Speaker 14: we got into the secretary of State's office, you know,
• 33:06
Speaker 14: it was it was a bigger picture and things didn't
• 33:08
Speaker 14: move as fast. And then I remembered, oh, yeah, two
• 33:10
Speaker 14: weeks in you went to a national conference and won
• 33:13
Speaker 14: the bid to have a conference come back to West Virginia.
• 33:16
Speaker 14: So that is great, but it's a lot of that
• 33:19
Speaker 14: was that was fast, but this is, you know, more more.
• 33:22
  Speaker 11: To the details.
• 33:23
Speaker 14: I get text messages to say, you know, it's time,
• 33:25
Speaker 14: can we can we sign the payroll, and I was like, yeah,
• 33:30
Speaker 14: I don't want any employees mad at me, so go
• 33:33
Speaker 14: right ahead. So some little details, not little details, but
• 33:37
Speaker 14: but details like that. That is really more hands hands
• 33:40
Speaker 14: on with the process.
• 33:42
Speaker 5: It's more granular. I mean, you're dealing with the right
• 33:44
Speaker 5: way to say day to day lives.
• 33:46
Speaker 6: And I think it's a different effect than perhaps, like
• 33:50
Speaker 6: you said, at the Secretary of State's office, where it's
• 33:52
Speaker 6: a bigger picture. Even just talking with Senator Manchin the
• 33:55
Speaker 6: other day about his time in the US Senate and
• 33:58
Speaker 6: his time as governor, he said you could wake up
• 33:59
Speaker 6: every more as governor and feel like he was making
• 34:01
Speaker 6: a difference in somebody's life. And perhaps that's, you know,
• 34:04
Speaker 6: the difference that you feel already just two weeks in
• 34:07
Speaker 6: as a Canal County commissioner. One of the things that
• 34:10
Speaker 6: you mentioned in an interview with US at Channel thirteen
• 34:12
Speaker 6: the other day, you were talking about water access and
• 34:15
Speaker 6: it's so wild sometimes to think about people that are
• 34:17
Speaker 6: still struggling to get clean water or just to get
• 34:19
Speaker 6: water service to their home. And I want to ask
• 34:22
Speaker 6: you how often you hear about something like that.
• 34:25
Speaker 14: Well, I've made that part of my campaign promise for
• 34:29
Speaker 14: the folks up at dutch Ridge. When I went out
• 34:31
Speaker 14: to the Quick Community Center, you know when there's dinner, say,
• 34:33
Speaker 14: there was a ramp dinner up there. So we just
• 34:36
Speaker 14: talked and they were like because I pulled up and
• 34:38
Speaker 14: it said no, no parking in front.
• 34:41
Speaker 11: Of the water spout.
• 34:42
Speaker 14: And I was like, Okay, I won't park in front
• 34:44
Speaker 14: of it. But I go inside and I'm like, what's
• 34:46
Speaker 14: the deal with this thing? Oh, we don't have running
• 34:49
Speaker 14: water up to our area.
• 34:51
Speaker 11: And I was just like wow.
• 34:53
Speaker 14: So and I said, well, how do you get water
• 34:54
Speaker 14: well from our cistern? By the They first said, by
• 34:56
Speaker 14: the grace of God. If it's raining, then they're going
• 34:59
Speaker 14: to get it's going to go through cistern. If it's not,
• 35:01
Speaker 14: then they have to come back. And you should see
• 35:02
Speaker 14: these big you know, we know them as water buffalos,
• 35:05
Speaker 14: but huge things that get there on the back of
• 35:09
Speaker 14: folks pickup trucks and they fill them up at those
• 35:12
Speaker 14: water places and then take them up to their cistern.
• 35:14
Speaker 11: And then that runs. And I was like, what do
• 35:17
Speaker 11: we need to do? Two more miles?
• 35:19
Speaker 14: Two more miles to Clay County and then Clay County
• 35:21
Speaker 14: needs five miles of it.
• 35:23
Speaker 11: I'm like, we can do this, And.
• 35:24
Speaker 14: I have talked to some of the folks at Western
• 35:27
  Speaker 14: American Water.
• 35:28
Speaker 11: They're like, we could do a public private partnership.
• 35:31
Speaker 14: So I haven't had a chance to talk with them
• 35:33
Speaker 14: yet as as county commissioner, and I've had a lot
• 35:37
Speaker 14: of other different meetings so far with either board meetings
• 35:42
Speaker 14: that I'm on or other folks who want to say, Commissioner,
• 35:45
Speaker 14: this is what we do and this is how we help,
• 35:47
Speaker 14: and this is why we'll be coming and asking for
• 35:50
Speaker 14: your help too. So with that saying that, yesterday, we
• 35:54
Speaker 14: just received an email to me that said I heard
• 35:59
Speaker 14: her talk about the I'm I'm a Vietnam vet, and
• 36:03
Speaker 14: I'd like to see water come to our area before
• 36:05
Speaker 14: I pass. So we're gonna we're gonna look into that too.
• 36:09
Speaker 6: Sure, And sometimes even when things move faster on one scale,
• 36:12
Speaker 6: they do take a while, especially if you're the person
• 36:14
Speaker 6: who maybe needs the water. So those right, those are
• 36:16
Speaker 6: things that we have to consider for sure.

Speaker 6: So I want to ask you what is the most
• 36:39
Speaker 6: interesting thing or interesting question that you've heard so far
• 36:42
Speaker 6: since you've since you've taken over, because now people have
• 36:45
Speaker 6: a different access to you as they did prior when
• 36:48
Speaker 6: you were a Secretary of State.
• 36:49
Speaker 11: Yeah, well I'm still always out and about anyway.
• 36:51
Speaker 14: They still see me at the grocery store and events.
• 36:54
Speaker 14: Actually actually to go on to that. I've been appointed
• 36:57
Speaker 14: to the Clay County Clay County Clay Center. I'm always
• 37:01
Speaker 14: in Clay County Clay Center board of directors. And I said,
• 37:06
Speaker 14: you all know I'm still going to be an usher
• 37:09
Speaker 14: at the Clay Center because whenever my daughter would would
• 37:12
Speaker 14: perform and then when they needed extra people, So that
• 37:16
  Speaker 14: was one thing.
• 37:18
Speaker 11: Are you still going to do that? You know there
• 37:21
Speaker 11: are there are a lot of requests for meetings and
• 37:25
Speaker 11: I like to do that. I like to be hands on.
• 37:28
Speaker 14: So then when they come and ask the County for
• 37:31
Speaker 14: money that I have an understanding of where they're coming from.
• 37:35
Speaker 14: Now I'm still learning on how we give that money
• 37:38
Speaker 14: and how much they're going to get sure, but it's
• 37:40
Speaker 14: you know, we're gonna we're truly getting into the budget process.
• 37:44
Speaker 14: Our budget or levy as it's called, also has to
• 37:47
Speaker 14: be completed by March the twenty eighth. So next week
• 37:52
Speaker 14: for me personally, is devoted to budget and more understanding
• 37:57
Speaker 14: how we're working on it, and I'll.
• 38:00
Speaker 11: Be getting with that.
• 38:01
Speaker 14: In this staff at the Canawah County Commission, they're wonderful
• 38:05
Speaker 14: because I come with a lot of questions. I come
• 38:08
Speaker 14: with a lot of ideas, and you know, I text,
• 38:11
Speaker 14: they answer right away. I ask for this, they answer
• 38:13
Speaker 14: right away. So it's really a good working relationship that
• 38:17
  Speaker 14: we have.
• 38:17
Speaker 6: It's nice to hear what are your legislative priorities? What
• 38:20
Speaker 6: are the commissions legislative priorities moving into the session that
• 38:23
Speaker 6: will start next month with a brand new governor.
• 38:25
  Speaker 11: Yeah, that's that's a good question.
• 38:27
Speaker 14: And a lot of these priorities were voted on and
• 38:30
Speaker 14: presented before I got in. But then I looked at
• 38:33
Speaker 14: them and I said, yes, we're well, we'll continue to
• 38:36
Speaker 14: work on these and some very important like you automatically
• 38:40
Speaker 14: would think peia, I mean, what are we going to
• 38:43
Speaker 14: do when account I mean at any public worker who's
• 38:48
Speaker 14: going to have a forty percent increase from pei A.
• 38:52
Speaker 14: So we really have to work on that and come
• 38:54
Speaker 14: up with ideas. So that's those are those are some
• 38:58
Speaker 14: of the That's one of the legislative thoughts. The regional
• 39:02
Speaker 14: jail per diem rate. You know you've been covering this
• 39:07
Speaker 14: for years. I covered it for years as a reporter,
• 39:09
Speaker 14: So that tells you how long ago that that there's
• 39:12
Speaker 14: always been this question in these counties.
• 39:14
Speaker 11: We have such huge jail deal bills.
• 39:18
Speaker 14: And there are some small counties that are millions and
• 39:24
Speaker 14: millions of dollars in debt. You know, it is a
• 39:27
Speaker 14: it is a strain on Kanaw County. We're obviously the
• 39:30
Speaker 14: largest county. But I look at this and I went
• 39:32
Speaker 14: to County Commissioner School put on by the County Commissioners.
• 39:38
Speaker 11: Association of West Virginia. So I brought my three wing notebooks.
• 39:41
Speaker 11: I'll show you all that I'm working on it too
• 39:45
Speaker 11: and reading through it.
• 39:46
Speaker 14: But it was actually or Ash, who's a wonderful public servant.
• 39:50
Speaker 14: He's now in the Auditor's office, and he was just saying, like,
• 39:53
Speaker 14: there are some counties where they'll never get out of
• 39:56
Speaker 14: debt because there may be a magistrate who wants to
• 39:59
Speaker 14: prove he or she is tough on crime, so they
• 40:02
Speaker 14: automatically throw someone in jail. And when you do that,
• 40:05
Speaker 14: your county is paying for that, and that's not necessarily
• 40:09
Speaker 14: where that person should be. And so I think that
• 40:12
Speaker 14: we as county commissioners can certainly look at bell reform,
• 40:16
Speaker 14: and bell reform is not a bad word. It actually
• 40:19
Speaker 14: may be saving some of US counties money and that
• 40:22
Speaker 14: we should look at it, and that Bell reform does
• 40:24
Speaker 14: not mean that you're weak on crime or that someone's
• 40:27
Speaker 14: going to go out and break the law again. So
• 40:30
Speaker 14: we really have to to look and that's where I
• 40:32
Speaker 14: have to, you know, talk with the prosecutor, talk with
• 40:35
Speaker 14: the magistrates. And you know, as I, as I start
• 40:38
Speaker 14: putting all the pieces to the puzzle together, I said,
• 40:41
Speaker 14: next week I work on the budget. Well, when I'm
• 40:43
Speaker 14: talking about when I'm looking at the budget, I want
• 40:45
Speaker 14: to say, hey, let's just show me this the jail bill,
• 40:48
Speaker 14: and what have we and what have we been doing
• 40:50
Speaker 14: toward and who have we talked to. So that's the
• 40:53
Speaker 14: part that is exciting about me, that oh, we could
• 40:56
Speaker 14: do this and we could do that. I mean, that's
• 40:58
Speaker 14: that's that's how I include people and kind of innovate
• 41:02
Speaker 14: at the same time.
• 41:02
Speaker 6: Sure, it'll be exciting to see, you know, what happens
• 41:05
Speaker 6: in this session, especially, like I said, with a new administration.
• 41:09
Speaker 6: The question, I know you've been asked many times, and
• 41:11
Speaker 6: I just I do want to ask it again. You
• 41:13
Speaker 6: did make history in the Canaw County as the first
• 41:16
Speaker 6: woman to serve as a Knaw County commissioner, and you've
• 41:19
  Speaker 6: done that before.
• 41:20
Speaker 5: You are you're a no state. You came in with
• 41:21
Speaker 5: your mountaineer cup today to you're a WBU cup, so.
• 41:24
Speaker 6: You know, your first female mountaineer, you know, the first
• 41:26
Speaker 6: female commissioner, and I just I just want to ask you.
• 41:29
Speaker 6: It does bring a different perspective to the table, but
• 41:31
Speaker 6: I know that's one hundred percent what you're focused on.
• 41:34
Speaker 5: It is an element.
• 41:35
Speaker 14: It is yes, And when I was running, I would
• 41:39
Speaker 14: tell people and it was this this Capitol high school
• 41:42
Speaker 14: student and I said, oh, you know, I wouldn't be
• 41:43
Speaker 14: the first woman. But that's not the that's not the
• 41:45
Speaker 14: only reason to vote for me, and she said, but
• 41:47
Speaker 14: it is a reason, and I.
• 41:49
Speaker 5: Was like, you're right, student, you are right, girl.
• 41:52
Speaker 14: And the reason is I mean, I think you can
• 41:54
Speaker 14: just see how maybe differently I work being an inclusive leader,
• 42:01
Speaker 14: asking all kinds of questions, understanding where someone is coming
• 42:05
Speaker 14: from when you know you don't have running water and
• 42:09
  Speaker 14: you know it's not it's just not a women a
• 42:11
Speaker 14: woman's issue of of you know, how do you run
• 42:15
Speaker 14: a household? Men and women are, you know, trying to
• 42:18
Speaker 14: have water that is sufficient to keep places clean and intact.
• 42:22
Speaker 14: So I just come with a different perspective, one because
• 42:25
Speaker 14: I'm Natalie, maybe two because I'm a woman, And three
• 42:28
Speaker 14: I just have I have that curiosity. I have the
• 42:32
Speaker 14: curiosity from being a reporter too.
• 42:34
Speaker 6: It takes all kinds and it takes all of our
• 42:36
Speaker 6: brains to create communities in which people are thriving, and
• 42:41
Speaker 6: so I think having that different perspective is certainly interesting.
• 42:45
Speaker 6: And we all come from a different background and are
• 42:47
Speaker 6: coming from that's right special places.
• 42:49
Speaker 4: So, yeah, commissioner, I have a text for you before
• 42:51
Speaker 4: we let you go. It says, oh wow, I always
• 42:53
Speaker 4: like when commissioners start that, yeah textures, I should say
• 42:56
Speaker 4: I remember when Natalie and Eric worked at w c
• 42:58
Speaker 4: HS TV and Delay he was born. How is she
• 43:01
Speaker 4: doing today? I will say Editor's note, we had Delaney
• 43:04
Speaker 4: on the show not long ago. I remember, like my
• 43:06
Speaker 4: own granddaughter, she had some serious medical issues. I may
• 43:08
Speaker 4: disagree with your political sides, but we prayed for her
• 43:11
Speaker 4: and for you all as a family.
• 43:13
Speaker 11: God bless, thank you so much.
• 43:15
Speaker 14: There were people who would say, when I heard that
• 43:17
Speaker 14: on the news, I fail to my knees and started
• 43:19
Speaker 14: praying for her. Well, those prayers worked. She is supposed
• 43:23
Speaker 14: to graduate in four months with a degree in broadcast journalist.
• 43:26
Speaker 14: I'm on delayy yes, and she she she m sed
• 43:31
Speaker 14: my sweat the whole ceremony and it was just, you know,
• 43:34
Speaker 14: it was just another element, you know, your you you.
• 43:37
Speaker 14: She may be taking some of your MC spots there, Amanda,
• 43:40
Speaker 14: or doing some other things.
• 43:42
Speaker 5: She did a great job.
• 43:43
  Speaker 6: She's beautiful, and I know she's had a lot of
• 43:45
Speaker 6: success recently, and it's been fun, very fun. I would
• 43:49
Speaker 6: agree with the Texter to watch watch Delaney grow up
• 43:52
Speaker 6: over the years as we've watched you.
• 43:54
Speaker 5: Know, your journey, your political journey.
• 43:56
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I kind of commissioner NT Lieutenant I appreciate

• 46:39
Speaker 5: Anthony, good morning. Are you Are you a chili chef yourself?
• 46:44
  Speaker 15: I claim to be. I guess I'm interered. I didn't
• 46:47
Speaker 15: do too well last year. We'll see how I do
• 46:49
  Speaker 15: this year.
• 46:49
  Speaker 5: I'm sure you'll do great.
• 46:50
Speaker 6: It's also difficult to cook and do all that kind
• 46:52
Speaker 6: of stuff when you're busy planning an event. This is
• 46:54
Speaker 6: the second annual Chili Cookoff and Cornhole tournament that you
• 46:58
Speaker 6: guys are are working on. There are prizes and there's
• 47:02
Speaker 6: all that good stuff, but it's off a really good cause.
• 47:04
Speaker 5: Tell everybody what that's about.
• 47:07
  Speaker 10: Yeah.
• 47:07
Speaker 15: So overall, and this is our second annual for this
• 47:10
Speaker 15: Chile Cookoff and cornhole competition, and around this time last
• 47:14
Speaker 15: year was really our first true event for Allen Cricket Alliance.
• 47:19
Speaker 15: The building out there, the Community Center South Charleston Community
• 47:23
Speaker 15: Center and it's specifically called Washington District Community Center, really
• 47:27
Speaker 15: became operational just before last year's event and it became
• 47:32
Speaker 15: our first real event and we probably had two hundred
• 47:37
Speaker 15: people there and it really was exceeded our expectations and
• 47:44
Speaker 15: and but it did exactly what we're trying to do
• 47:46
Speaker 15: and is really offer a place a community center to
• 47:51
Speaker 15: give community access to a lot of different things like health, nutrition, emergencies,
• 47:55
Speaker 15: social and recreational. We have a large you know, gym
• 47:58
Speaker 15: there and it's overall just you know, just like anything else,
• 48:03
Speaker 15: the community center is to help the community. Several years ago,
• 48:07
Speaker 15: you know, are we had a junior high school in
• 48:10
Speaker 15: the area that will shut down and that you know,
• 48:14
Speaker 15: probably in the mid eighties, early nineties, mid eighties, and
• 48:19
Speaker 15: that really you know, left a hole in the community
• 48:21
Speaker 15: and we're hoping this community center that's that's now up
• 48:25
Speaker 15: and running and going it can do that. And the
• 48:28
Speaker 15: Allen Creek Alliance is kind of there working with South
• 48:31
Speaker 15: Charleston to kind of shepherd that.
• 48:33
Speaker 5: Absolutely. So this is a it's a community cornerstone.
• 48:36
Speaker 6: It's a place where people know they can count on
• 48:38
Speaker 6: the money that you guys will raise this weekend and
• 48:40
Speaker 6: we'll just help support events there and things like that.
• 48:43
Speaker 15: Yeah, future events. Some of the things we also do,
• 48:46
Speaker 15: we have we happen to have scholarships that go along.
• 48:50
Speaker 15: We give a thousand dollars scholarships to three seniors that
• 48:54
Speaker 15: are in the district area. So we give that out yearly.
• 49:00
Speaker 15: So that's coming around the corner. That will be taking
• 49:02
Speaker 15: applications and awarding to three seniors.
• 49:06
Speaker 5: What can people expect this weekend as far as the
• 49:08
Speaker 5: fun is concerned, excuse me, as far as what the
• 49:12
Speaker 5: fun is concerned this weekend at your cookoff, Uh.
• 49:16
Speaker 15: It'll be a lot of high energy event. Half the court,
• 49:21
Speaker 15: half the basketball court. Uh, We'll have the corn hole,
• 49:25
Speaker 15: so we'll have about five boards kind of going and
• 49:29
Speaker 15: throwing the the initial competition you know, we'll have that
• 49:34
Speaker 15: right at the beginning, and then afterwards we'll have kind
• 49:35
Speaker 15: of spin off competitions and we'll have various sort of prizes.
• 49:39
Speaker 15: We'll go with, Hey, maybe a kid's only game, maybe
• 49:42
Speaker 15: a co ed game, uh, maybe you know, various different
• 49:46
Speaker 15: things to kind of keep that going. In the other
• 49:48
Speaker 15: half is going to have all the chile going. Right now,
• 49:54
Speaker 15: we have ten teams signed up for the Cornhole and
• 49:58
Speaker 15: I think we have about eight chili cookers at the moment,
• 50:02
Speaker 15: but we expect you know, maybe four to five added
• 50:07
Speaker 15: to both of those.
• 50:08
Speaker 6: All right, So admission is free. There are door prizes.
• 50:11
Speaker 6: Tasting tickets are ten for five dollars. There's prizes for
• 50:14
Speaker 6: those chefs that are at the top of their game
• 50:17
Speaker 6: one hundred, one hundred dollars, and then people's choice we'll
• 50:20
Speaker 6: get fifty dollars. Where can people go to find out more?
