- 0:00Boom, there it is. There we go.
- 0:02The great Rick Mast. I'm Charlie Marlowe.
- 0:04This is another live edition of the Rick Mast show.
- 0:08I love these Rick. I think the the viewers love
- 0:11these as well. We're going to give people some
- 0:14time to jump in here and they can ask questions and all that,
- 0:17but First off, man, how have you been?
- 0:20Been good, Charlie. It's been a while, right?
- 0:21We got to get more of these going.
- 0:23We spent Labor Day weekend. Let's see, what do we do?
- 0:26So Katie came in from Colorado, right?
- 0:29So we had to go to the UVA football game Saturday night,
- 0:33came back, then we had to go take the boat out Sunday to the
- 0:37lake. I put a video out about that in
- 0:40a damn monsoon. But man, when you're married and
- 0:43you got all girls around you, you do what you're told, you
- 0:45know? So we did that all day Sunday.
- 0:47Then Monday we went down to the Rockbridge Bass Labor Day
- 0:50festivities and got support barbecue and then took Katie
- 0:54back to the airport. And that was my weekend.
- 0:56So fun time. Fun time.
- 0:58I love it now. I I did pick up.
- 1:00You were saying we had to go to the football game and we had to
- 1:02go to the lake. Like it, like it.
- 1:04It was an obligation. Come on now.
- 1:06Are you married, Charlie? I am, yes.
- 1:09Do you have a daughter? I do, yes.
- 1:11How old is she? She is 6 1/2.
- 1:14She's in first grade. You just wait about 10 years,
- 1:17big boy. You'll understand.
- 1:19You'll understand what I mean. Yes.
- 1:21You do what you're told, Ben. Hey, dude, I've been married for
- 1:2440. Whatever.
- 1:25Some years, right? I mean, long have I been
- 1:28married, got married in 78. However many years that is.
- 1:30I don't know. But yeah, I learned long ago,
- 1:33just just go along. Especially when you got 2 twin
- 1:35daughters, right? Just go along.
- 1:37Just go along. Makes it, I love it.
- 1:39Makes makes life much easier guys.
- 1:42That's so true. Happy wife, happy life and I
- 1:45guess happy daughters. We have to, we have to think of
- 1:47a rhyme for that one. But that's for we got people
- 1:50jumping in now. So folks who are watching, get
- 1:53your questions in. I said hi there, even though I'm
- 1:55not Kenny Wallace, but I'm representing Kenny Wallace.
- 1:58So that's not Kenny, that's me. But let's start off here, Rick.
- 2:02How about just big picture thoughts on Darlington?
- 2:05I thought that was a a hell of a finish.
- 2:08I was rooting the last couple weeks.
- 2:10I wanted to see Kyle Busch get into the playoffs.
- 2:13It didn't happen. He's running better.
- 2:15But what a what a great story with Chase Briscoe.
- 2:17Yeah, it was. I mean, how can you, you can't
- 2:20script a better deal, right, for the final race.
- 2:22I mean, that that's what that's what this whole thing's about.
- 2:26I mean, you've got two guys there that are are going for the
- 2:30win and going to get in, get into the playoffs.
- 2:33Dude, at the end of that race, you know, one of those two that
- 2:37you didn't think was going to get in the playoffs are going to
- 2:39get in the playoffs unless they wreck each other's last lap,
- 2:41right? And then you've got the I mean,
- 2:44you got the whole story with Kyle Busch.
- 2:47You know, how did he get he went from the villain man to the most
- 2:50loved guy on the racetrack now. It's wild.
- 2:52It's wild how this sport works, right?
- 2:54I mean, you go, who was it? Carl Edwards asked somebody to
- 2:57driver introduction earlier this year.
- 2:59What happened when Kyle Busch came out and all the fans
- 3:02cheered him instead of booting and like Edward said, what the
- 3:05hell happened to him? He used to get booed all the
- 3:07time, right? It's weird how that works.
- 3:09But man, for the final race and Briscoe winning that thing and
- 3:12you know, the storylines on that deal, I mean, Hall's shutting
- 3:16down, right? And all the guys working and
- 3:18still putting it out there and putting it together and they win
- 3:21the race. I mean, that's a big deal, dude.
- 3:23I mean, a lot of time and we've seen this, man, the drivers
- 3:26going to leave at the end of the year or the the crew chiefs
- 3:29leaving or whatever, the team's getting disbanded for the next
- 3:32year. It's not going to be the same.
- 3:33And I've seen it, man, People give up, they give up, right?
- 3:36And and and they just don't run good the rest of the year.
- 3:38This this proves fortitude with that team.
- 3:41It the guys that work on that for halls.
- 3:43I mean, it's a it's a big deal to win that race for those guys,
- 3:46right? I mean, you know, they're all
- 3:47changing jobs or out of jobs or whatever is going on next year
- 3:51and then they come up and win this race.
- 3:54And then for NASCAR to have, you know, the criticism they get for
- 3:57the points deal, which I think is unfounded now.
- 3:59I mean, we've got our we've got our system in place now.
- 4:01And that's that's what it's going to be.
- 4:03And it adds excitement, it adds drama.
- 4:05It does all those things. No, it's not what it used to be.
- 4:08It's not it's not the point system of old, but it's it's a
- 4:11more exciting point system. And Saturday or Sunday night
- 4:14proved that at Darlington, man, just just a neat deal.
- 4:18Neat deal for all those guys, really.
- 4:19Now the Harrison Burton deal, they've been catching grief,
- 4:22right? He's last place in points and
- 4:24he's in the playoffs now. And people are are fussed about
- 4:27that. But listen, when you go to
- 4:29Daytona in February, everybody knows the rules.
- 4:31The rules are if you win a race, you're in the playoffs, right?
- 4:35So you know, it, it, it, it's, it doesn't mean anything.
- 4:40I mean it, you know how he does the playoffs, Maybe he can turn
- 4:43it around and show people wrong or maybe he'll run like they did
- 4:46the biggest part of the season, not be there.
- 4:47But the rules are what they are, right?
- 4:50And and you play it that way. You do whatever you got to do to
- 4:53what try to win a rate if you're not doing well, not running
- 4:56well, all right for points with the only way to get in is to win
- 4:59any year in and he did other than Austin Dillard.
- 5:02Austin Dillard won, but he wasn't in right.
- 5:04He got he was in, but he got taken out.
- 5:06So I understand the criticism, but I understand that.
- 5:10But the rules are what they are and it makes them excited you.
- 5:14It's exciting to have first Harrison Burton in the in the
- 5:17deal because he is the last place finish your in points, but
- 5:21he's into friggin playoffs. How does that work?
- 5:24It's called wild card in in the in the NFL.
- 5:27However you want to look at it, right, You look at it, you kind
- 5:29of look at well, it's not sort of like it is a little bit like
- 5:31that. But listen, dude, the rules are
- 5:34what they are. They're in the playoffs.
- 5:36The Wood Brothers got their hundredth win, which was so
- 5:38friggin cool and special and I'm so happy with those guys, right.
- 5:42And you know what? We'll start the playoffs to see
- 5:44what happens. Yeah, let's go back to that
- 5:47because we didn't do a show after that race.
- 5:50And you talk about a feel good story for 5000 different
- 5:54reasons. First of all, Wood Brothers, you
- 5:56really realize it seems like the whole NASCAR world pulls for The
- 6:00Wood Brothers. And then you got Harrison
- 6:02Burton, who loses his ride. His dad, Jeff Burton, the mayor,
- 6:07is up in the broadcast booth. You probably saw the video of
- 6:11just an epic fist pump when he wins.
- 6:14You got the hug down there and just take the racing out of it.
- 6:19This is also why we love sports. As a dad, as a father, I got
- 6:25goosebumps just watching that, watching him hug his kid, the
- 6:29fist bump, his mom, his fiance. I mean, that was an amazing
- 6:34story. That's why people love sports
- 6:37for, for stories like that. It was great.
- 6:39It was and you got it. And what makes it so special?
- 6:43A couple things #1 The Wood Brothers 100th win, right #2
- 6:47what you just talked about in Harrison Burton winning the
- 6:51race. But but, but, but, but what he's
- 6:53been through the last two or three years.
- 6:55OK. And what what's how what's
- 6:57transpired? Oh, I mean, The Wood Brothers,
- 7:00that ride was his first big time shot at at Cup racing.
- 7:04And you kind of floundered around and what for whatever
- 7:06reasons, they just haven't run good to perform.
- 7:09And he lost his ride, man. They fired him, right?
- 7:12You know, you're not performing. You know, we've given you ample
- 7:15time. We feel like as a team, but and
- 7:18everybody loves Harrison. He loves those guys.
- 7:20They all love each other. But I don't take something.
- 7:21If you drive for The Wood Brothers, everybody's going to
- 7:24love everybody. I don't care who you are, you'll
- 7:25end up loving everybody. That's just that's just the
- 7:29culture that Lynn and Eddie have, right?
- 7:31And now the new group with John and everybody, and it started
- 7:34with with Leonard and his brothers and, and, and it's
- 7:38just, it just kind of goes into a feeling that like, man, you
- 7:42know, this is the craziest scenario that could possibly be.
- 7:46And from the from the Burton family that, you know, race has
- 7:51been their whole life for years now and the their, their child
- 7:55gets a shot in a, in a, in a top cup ride and it doesn't work out
- 8:00and he gets fired, right? And you're down and you're
- 8:04dejected and you've done every all the right things for years
- 8:07to get to this position and you're fired.
- 8:10Dude, I'm a driver and I got fired.
- 8:13My son just got fired, right? And what's he going?
- 8:16What we going to do? What's he going to do next?
- 8:17We don't know. Then you turn around and you go
- 8:19to Daytona and you win the Fraggin race at Daytona and
- 8:22you're in the Fraggin playoffs, man.
- 8:25It's just it's, you know, the emotional part for that family,
- 8:29what what you saw play out on TV.
- 8:31None of that was scripted. None of that was, you know, put
- 8:34on that was true emotions fact. It was it was more emotional
- 8:38than that than what you saw, to be honest with you.
- 8:40But listen, man, that that's racing and as you say, that
- 8:43sport, and that's what that's what sports are supposed to do
- 8:46for for the force and and and and NASCAR, they hit him at they
- 8:50hit a home run with that one. They really did.
- 8:53OK, so let's let's flip back to Darlington for a couple reasons.
- 8:59As I'm watching that race at the end there, I'm thinking about
- 9:03Chris Buscher because you have you have Tyler Reddick and we'll
- 9:08get to him winning the regular season championship and also
- 9:12going through a lot in his car, puking, essentially crapping
- 9:16himself, which we heard on the radio.
- 9:18But then he he kind of wanted to move on from that, which I get
- 9:21Bob Pockras kept asking about it in the press conference, which
- 9:25was really funny. But go back to the first
- 9:28Darlington race, right? That's May.
- 9:30And then also remember Bush Busher lost that race to Larson
- 9:34by like that much. Where was that at?
- 9:35I can't remember where. That was at.
- 9:37I do remember that. But somebody, somebody will tell
- 9:41us here in the comments, but you got Chris Buscher, who for the
- 9:46most part deserved to be in the playoffs.
- 9:48He lost that race to Larson by by that much.
- 9:51And then, of course, Reddick got too aggressive at Darlington.
- 9:55Everybody remembers the exchange and Buscher kind of roughed him
- 9:59up a little bit. It didn't turn into a fight
- 10:01because Reddick immediately just said, look, man, I'm sorry I
- 10:05screwed up. But like, that's what I
- 10:07initially thought of because here's here's Tyler Reddick and
- 10:10he's celebrating with the regular season trophy.
- 10:13Chris Buscher is so dejected afterwards and all he's probably
- 10:16thinking is, dude, you won the regular season.
- 10:20If you just race me a little cleaner back in May, I'm in the
- 10:24playoffs. Yeah, Chris didn't have a real
- 10:26good interview after that race. You know, he kind of did some
- 10:31stuff, but I understood. I did the same thing.
- 10:34Charlie. I thought the same thing.
- 10:35As soon as they went to that guy, I'm like, damn, Reddit cost
- 10:39him this. He he should be in this deal if
- 10:42it wasn't for that wreck with Reddick.
- 10:43I thought it so if you were thinking it Charlie and I was
- 10:46thinking it, I got an I got a sneaky suspicion that Butcher
- 10:50was thinking the same thing right.
- 10:52And probably when he was giving that interview, he was probably
- 10:55sitting there cussing Reddick the whole time under his breath.
- 10:58But it was it would do no good. And he no, he had, he had to be
- 11:03thinking about that. He had to be because that I
- 11:05mean, really, dude, one race, you know, they all say it's 23
- 11:08races. One race doesn't decide.
- 11:11But I'll tell you what that one race did decide for Butcher.
- 11:14It really did. That boy should have been in the
- 11:15playoffs. If Reddick hadn't done that,
- 11:18he'd have been in the playoffs. And I got an idea.
- 11:22That's why Buscher said some of the stuff he did.
- 11:24He was so dejected, he was probably thinking about I need
- 11:26to go quip that damn rhetoric boy right right now.
- 11:29But I can't say that right now because it doesn't make any,
- 11:31doesn't make any sense. So yeah, I think you're spot on
- 11:34on that. Charlie, all right, I have to
- 11:36ask you then if you if you want to answer, what's the worst you
- 11:40ever felt in the car from a from a sickness perspective?
- 11:45And and I'm not talking about I'm just talking about what he
- 11:48was going through, which is probably flu like symptoms.
- 11:51Again, you heard on the radio, he basically, he basically said
- 11:56some gross stuff. He didn't want to get into it.
- 11:59And if if anybody has access to that press conference, it's
- 12:03pretty funny. It's right off the bat.
- 12:06It's, I believe, Dustin Long and Bob podcast asking the questions
- 12:10and Tyler Reddick's having some fun with it.
- 12:12He's smiling, but he's also saying, OK, can we move on?
- 12:15I don't really want to describe what actually happened in the
- 12:18fire suit, which was probably pretty disgusting.
- 12:21I never defecated and never threw up in a race car, but I
- 12:24was close many, many times. And I guess we were Charlotte or
- 12:28somewhere and I had food poisoning.
- 12:30Dude. We started the race, man, and
- 12:32I've been I I, you know, I've been an infield care and they
- 12:35pumped me with Ivsi mean they filled me up with fluids and
- 12:37doing all they could do. They worked on me starting that
- 12:40morning all day right till the race started and just felt like
- 12:45crap. The race started.
- 12:46I'm like, man, there's no way. But as the race went on, I
- 12:50started feeling better and better.
- 12:51And finally, I think we talked about this earlier that it was a
- 12:55rain delay late at night, right? And we had a rain delay maybe
- 13:003/4 the way through the race. And I'm sitting there in the car
- 13:02and I'm like, yeah, I'm hungry. I called my PR guy.
- 13:06He went and got me a piece of chicken and brought to the race
- 13:07car. So I ate it while I was sitting
- 13:09there waiting on the radio. So, you know, it, it worked its
- 13:11way out of the system. Big, big credit to the infield
- 13:15care staff to do that. But I remember when you, if you
- 13:18remember, Smoke did that at Watkins Glen, right?
- 13:21He had a little issue and he won the race, actually.
- 13:24And I think he had to go jump in the shower real quick.
- 13:28But man, you, you fight through a lot of discomfort and race
- 13:32cars. The worst I ever felt the race
- 13:33car, honestly, I broke, I broke some ribs at Bristol one time.
- 13:37And the next week we had to go to Texas and race.
- 13:41And gosh, I forget the group that was at the racetrack then
- 13:45it was one of the groups, medical groups.
- 13:48Anyhow, they, they fashioned me a donut, like a piece of plastic
- 13:53or foam rubber doughnut that went around my rib cage with a
- 13:57hole in the sitter and it, it protected, it protected where
- 14:00the ribs were actually broke. And then they gave me a 10s unit
- 14:04and I put the 10s unit on me. If you know what a 10s unit is,
- 14:07it's 2 little dyos with wires. You put one up above the brake
- 14:11and one below the brake and you got a little dial thing, a
- 14:14little control box, and you set that thing from zero to 10.
- 14:18And, and if you ever had a Ted unit, you know what I'm talking
- 14:20about. And so I would, I would, I was
- 14:23messing with that thing and you set it up to like two or three.
- 14:26It's about all the about all you could take It would it makes
- 14:29pain sort of man. They dropped the green flag in
- 14:32five laps. I had that dude turn to 10 all
- 14:35the way up far as it would go right.
- 14:37And it's just a just a miserable experience in that race car that
- 14:41day. I remember we came in for the
- 14:42first pit stop, they jacked it up and let it down on the right
- 14:46side. They come around on the left
- 14:47side, jacked it up, put tires on, let the Jack down, let down
- 14:49hard. I thought I was going to friggin
- 14:51die bad. I thought I started seeing stars
- 14:54and I fussed up. I said, guys, don't let the Jack
- 14:57down so damn hard from now on, just let it down easy.
- 15:00You're killing me, right? But that was my worst experience
- 15:03trying to drive a race car with pain, OK?
- 15:06And it's not fun, but you overcome it.
- 15:08You know? That's what you get paid to do.
- 15:10And folks, get your questions in.
- 15:12We'll we'll talk a little bit more about these last couple
- 15:15races and then we'll get to all your questions.
- 15:17So get your questions in the queue and we will get to them
- 15:20right after this. Do you think, Rick, is it good
- 15:22for the sport? Is it good for the sport that
- 15:27the playoffs are so difficult to make because the win and you're
- 15:31in that you have some great drivers, in one case a Hall of
- 15:36Famer. I mean, look at the cut off
- 15:39Chris Buscher, Bubba Wallace, Ross Chastain, Kyle Busch.
- 15:44I'll just mention the the first four out.
- 15:47I mean, I think most people want to see Kyle Busch in.
- 15:49I think NASCAR wants to see Kyle Busch in.
- 15:51He's good for business. Ross Chastain, the last couple
- 15:54years, very exciting. Bubba Wallace is always part of
- 15:58all the storylines. Buscher's been very solid.
- 16:02So look, you got some guys which we mentioned, the Briscoes, the
- 16:05Burtons, Cindric Suarez who are in.
- 16:10I think it makes the sport much more an entertaining for TV and
- 16:14we've kind of touched on that. But do you think is that
- 16:19outweighed by the fact that somebody like a Kyle Busch or
- 16:22Ross Chastain are not in the playoffs and and you have some
- 16:25superstar level talent that's not on display with a chance to
- 16:29win it? Yeah, How do you guarantee it?
- 16:31I mean, yeah, your, your your points are valid.
- 16:33Charlie. Kyle Busch.
- 16:35We NASCAR needs Kyle Busch in the playoffs, right?
- 16:38The storylines with Bubba Wallace being in the playoffs
- 16:41would be big for NASCAR, right? Those, those are two big ones
- 16:45right there. The deal with Buscher, right?
- 16:48I mean, yeah, those guys, the way they run, the way they
- 16:51compete, the way they performed all year, they should be they
- 16:54should be in the playoffs and, and, and but they're not They
- 16:58didn't do what they needed to do to get in the playoffs.
- 17:02And and again, I go back to the Burton deal.
- 17:04You know, the rules are what they are.
- 17:06You know, we, we, this thing was changed years ago, dude, they
- 17:10call it the Bat Kenseth points deal, right?
- 17:13When Matt won the championship that year, whatever year it was
- 17:16and he had it won what 3 races to go or something right on the
- 17:20old system and people just raised holy hell.
- 17:23Then about all the fans raising hell.
- 17:25How's that guy? He won one race and he's our
- 17:27champion, right? Or whatever it was.
- 17:29It was a boring, boring, a boring type championship, you
- 17:32might say. And I don't I'm not saying that
- 17:35to degrade Bat or what those guys did Robbie and all these
- 17:38guys. It was great winning that
- 17:39championship, but that's what drove that's what drove us to
- 17:45get to where we're at with this with this point still now, how
- 17:47do you guarantee that your best drivers are going to get in
- 17:50there? You're not going to do that
- 17:51right? It's you know, this this year
- 17:54here proves that you're not going to have or what we
- 17:57perceive as our best drivers to be in the same or what we
- 18:00perceive as the drivers that should be or need to be in in
- 18:04the playoffs for the publicity for NASCAR.
- 18:07You can't you know, you can't script that stuff.
- 18:09I mean, you set up this thing the way it's set up and the guys
- 18:13that get in get in. The ones that don't don't.
- 18:15I mean, it's it's really, it's really no more complicated than
- 18:18that. But yeah, it it to your point,
- 18:21those guys, it would be good for us and good for NASCAR if they
- 18:25were in the race. But but by not being there, that
- 18:28creates another storyline, Charlie, that we're talking
- 18:30about, You know, we're all talking about these guys.
- 18:32I've been, I've been reading it now every day since since the
- 18:35race ended, right. And the guys, that's not in it.
- 18:38And like, well, that's, that's creating a storyline here,
- 18:41right. But then we go to, I guess
- 18:44they're doing a little TV series for the guys that's in the point
- 18:46still, right. And like last year, who was it?
- 18:50Chase didn't make the deal. And so everybody was all upset
- 18:54that Chase wasn't going to be part of that mini docu TV
- 18:57series. They did.
- 18:58Yeah. So you know, I don't know a lot
- 19:01of things figure into it. But listen dude, we're going to
- 19:04Atlanta. The guys that send the points,
- 19:06This is her 4th 1st deal to go after.
- 19:08So all we can do is talk about what happens from here here on.
- 19:12Out Here's a good question. I never thought about stage
- 19:16breaks in this capacity. This is from Rick Brian
- 19:22Lacortic. He says if you're at the race
- 19:24having some beers, it's nice to know when the break is going to
- 19:27come. And that's interesting because I
- 19:29never really thought about that. If you're thinking about
- 19:31football, the end of 1/4 halftime baseball, the inning
- 19:35ends, the home team hits, you run to the bathroom, you get
- 19:38your beer. That's kind of a a nice added
- 19:41bonus of the stage breaks. What do you think?
- 19:43I never thought about that either, not from the from the
- 19:45finance perspective. Yeah, that is pretty cool.
- 19:49But you know what, It's going to overrun the bathrooms.
- 19:51That's a problem like half time at the football games or, you
- 19:54know, in between any and sometime at the baseball games,
- 19:56you run to the bathroom. Well, everybody else is there
- 19:58waiting on you or you run to the beer stand or the coach stand or
- 20:01the hot dog stand. But yeah, that, that that's a
- 20:04pretty, that's a pretty good take there.
- 20:05Dude. I hadn't really thought about
- 20:07that. I bet you the hierarchy and
- 20:09NASCAR has thought about it. You know, they don't a lot of
- 20:12that stuff they know, but they don't talk about.
- 20:14But yeah, that's a pretty good deal.
- 20:16I like that. And I, you know, from a driver's
- 20:19perspective. It's it's kind of a cool deal.
- 20:22Of course, I never did it. We didn't do it when I raced.
- 20:24But I'm like, that'd be kind of cool as a driver to know it's
- 20:27such a such lap. You're going to get a caution,
- 20:29right? And you can do some kind of
- 20:31adjustment or you can do something for yourself or
- 20:34whatever you need to do. Because before that, you know,
- 20:38you didn't never, you didn't know when he's going to get a
- 20:39caution or get a break or what, what you can do to your chassis,
- 20:42man. It's just a cool deal, I think
- 20:44for a driver to to, to have that.
- 20:46And that's a cool deal for the fans, man.
- 20:48Cool deal. Good, good thought, my man, Good
- 20:50thought. I like that.
- 20:52It's funny though and when I used to do radio I'd always say
- 20:54this and I know the the Cardinals organization didn't
- 20:57like hearing this but it's the truth from my perspective.
- 21:00Now don't get me wrong, first of all, I love it when the
- 21:04Cardinals are great and Busch Stadium is packed 45,000
- 21:08especially September, October in the playoffs.
- 21:12For me, a baseball fan, no better place to be.
- 21:15But if it's a day game and there's nobody there, it's easy
- 21:21to park, it's easy to get a beer, it's easy to go to the
- 21:25bathroom. And by the way, the Cardinals
- 21:26are having some historically record low crowd, so I'm sure
- 21:30ownership is very disappointed with that.
- 21:33But if you want cheap tickets and you want easy in and out
- 21:37when the team isn't playing well and when the fans are mad, the
- 21:41ballpark experience, hey, you know how this is, too.
- 21:43I used to, just as a kid at old Tiger Stadium in Detroit, you'd
- 21:46buy the $5 tickets and you just keep moving down until the usher
- 21:49tells you to stop, right? You try to sit right behind the
- 21:52dugout if nobody's there.
