Reading the Bible Again, For the First Time
In our society, sacred texts are seen, at best, as irrelevant and, at worst, as an excuse to incite violence, hatred, and division. It seems that the loudest voices within American Christian culture are fundamentalists who have co-opted the sacred texts and insist that they must be taken literally or conservative evangelicals who interpret scripture to bolster their own biases. As theologically progressive people of faith, many of us know how we don't want to read sacred texts such as the bible, but we are still struggling to find a method for how we do want to read and engage sacred texts…
