- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:03the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:06There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:11while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:14together to talk cards. You know, Mike, you, you know
- 0:20that you've made the big time when you have an intro.
- 0:24I am obsessed with that intro. Yeah, so henchy.
- 0:29It's pretty fun. It's pretty fun, yeah.
- 0:33So I thought it would be fun. And we have a little outro with
- 0:37kind of the first cousins to the same sort of sound.
- 0:41So yeah, I mean, we're evolving quickly.
- 0:44We already have one. What do they, what do they say
- 0:49that it's canned, it's in the can or it's, I don't know what
- 0:52they say in the business. Me neither.
- 0:56All right, well, we've got one down and we're going on #2 right
- 1:01now. How would you describe, First
- 1:06off, before we get into our main topic today, how would you
- 1:08describe the reception acceptance of this new concept?
- 1:15Since when we first recorded we hadn't even told anyone we were
- 1:20doing it. And here we are six days later.
- 1:24How would you say that those six days go better than expected as
- 1:29expected? What?
- 1:30What do you think? I would say better than
- 1:32expected. I think that more people listen
- 1:34to the podcast than I expected for a brand new podcast.
- 1:38Way more people watched the YouTube video and subscribe to
- 1:41YouTube than I expected. I was blown away by the
- 1:44reception. There were a couple of negative
- 1:46comments from people, which is fine.
- 1:49I don't, I mean, I, if it's constructive, I like it, but
- 1:52there were a couple of little negative Nancy's that whatever.
- 1:55But the vast, vast, vast majority were very positive,
- 2:00encouraging subscribe. Can't wait for more.
- 2:03And I've reached out because I have a new podcast I'm rolling
- 2:06out and I had a next 10 to 14 days or so.
- 2:09And I have reached out to a handful of people and asked them
- 2:13to be guests and they are excited about it.
- 2:16And, you know, you're just trying to get guests for a new
- 2:19podcast idea. I didn't expect to be this easy.
- 2:23Yeah, it, I think I, I agree completely.
- 2:29I think that people have been overwhelmingly positive.
- 2:34You know, there's always and I again, you have to focus on the
- 2:3799%, not the 1% and the 99%. It's been fantastic and, and I'm
- 2:42excited and I had fun last time. And you know, I like this format
- 2:47so much 'cause one of my favorite things is to just talk
- 2:50about stuff and, and ask questions and bounce stuff off
- 2:54of other people. And it can be whatever topic we
- 2:59want. And is like we're, we're not
- 3:01going in with like a reader's notes like we have a topic, OK,
- 3:06agree on the topic, yes, OK, play and so or record.
- 3:10So it's it's very much just a natural conversation as if we
- 3:14were talking on the phone on our drive home from work, so.
- 3:19Yeah, I love it too. And, and I didn't.
- 3:23I don't take any notes. I don't prep anything for this,
- 3:26which might be a mistake. I know.
- 3:27I'm by saying that I'm opening myself up to comments that say
- 3:30you should have brought some notes, but I'm not going to.
- 3:33Yeah, I think it's less natural with notes.
- 3:35I never do notes, so I'm good with it.
- 3:40So here's something that happened, and this is going to
- 3:43be our topic for today, and I'm going to tell a story of how
- 3:47this became the topic. So, so I'm in a few different
- 3:52text groups with different collectors, which I love.
- 3:56I, I love, you know, people pick a card up and they'll share it
- 4:00or they'll see a video and they'll have an opinion and
- 4:03they'll share it. And so there's a few different
- 4:06groups that I'm in a text group with, one of which has myself,
- 4:12Theo Dylan, double D vintage cards and Theo obviously
- 4:16Clemente collector, Adam, our, our, you know, third amigo and
- 4:22of, of splendid sports and John Mangini.
- 4:26And so we were John Mangini was on professor sports cards the
- 4:32other day, who's a channel who's been around for a little bit,
- 4:35but he's recently gotten a lot of attention and he's been
- 4:39putting out tons and tons of content, going live like 3-4
- 4:44days a week for like a couple of hours.
- 4:46Had interviews with Chris Sewell, interviews with Gio, a
- 4:50bunch of big names in, in the, the hobby community.
- 4:55And so Mangini was on and Mangini was giving his opinion
- 5:01on some things and you know, as we all like to do.
- 5:05And Mangini was talking about a few topics.
- 5:07One of the topics was he was talking about graded vintage
- 5:14carts. And he was, he was thinking, I
- 5:17mean, where did these all come from?
- 5:20You know, like, I don't remember for years, I don't remember ever
- 5:24seeing graded or autographed. Did I say graded autographed
- 5:28vintage cards 'cause I don't remember seeing autographed
- 5:31vintage cards. And, and then toward the end, he
- 5:36started saying, yeah, I don't think we should tell people how
- 5:39they should be collecting or what they should be doing.
- 5:42So in this text group that I'm in with John, I go, John, I go
- 5:47come on you. You said, you said we shouldn't
- 5:51be telling people how to collect.
- 5:53At the end after you kind of said you're not so sure about
- 5:57autographed vintage cards like for like 20 minutes, Like how
- 6:02does that fit? And John said, I didn't say you
- 6:07shouldn't collect autographed vintage cards.
- 6:10What I said was I'm a little skeptical about some of these
- 6:14guys who weren't like Bob Feller, who signed everywhere,
- 6:18you know, and there were a few of those types of guys Orlando
- 6:21Cepeda signed forever. He goes, I'm a little skeptical.
- 6:25And I was just giving my opinion.
- 6:27I wasn't saying you shouldn't collect it.
- 6:28I was just saying I'm a little skeptical of it.
- 6:31And then Adam jumped in and Adam said that's a great topic for a
- 6:37video. He said, is telling your opinion
- 6:41or sharing your opinion, telling other people what they should or
- 6:45shouldn't do. And I was like, I'm stealing
- 6:49that idea. And they're like, they're all
- 6:50like, yeah, do it. That would be super interesting.
- 6:55And in fairness, I was like, that's true.
- 6:57John, you, you didn't say don't go collect autographed vintage
- 7:03cards. If you do, you're an idiot.
- 7:06He just was giving his opinion about how he is skeptical of it
- 7:11and then that he didn't really say that's something you should
- 7:15or shouldn't do. So my question to you is because
- 7:19I think we all do it, we all share our opinions all the time.
- 7:21That's part of what this whole medium is, is sharing opinions
- 7:25on things. When we're sharing our opinions,
- 7:28are we directly, indirectly, subconsciously?
- 7:34Are we telling other people what they should be doing?
- 7:39I, I think it can come across that way and I think it depends
- 7:41on how you phrase things. And, and I, I hate that we're,
- 7:45I'm going to add on to the mangini stuff here.
- 7:48And I have the utmost respect for him as a person, as a
- 7:51collector in that video. He's nearly the beginning.
- 7:57I hope I don't misquote him, but he started out by saying I think
- 8:02this, I think this, I think this three different opinions started
- 8:05with I think, and then he said those are all just factual and
- 8:11they can't be factual if they are your opinions.
- 8:14But I think that by starting sentences with I think it
- 8:20protects himself from being from people saying you're telling us
- 8:25how to collect. And I think it's smart of John.
- 8:27I'd do my best to say things like that as well, to say I
- 8:32wouldn't buy these things but or I believe this, but sometimes I
- 8:40fail at that. I'm sure every YouTube fails at
- 8:44that, and I'm sure that some viewers take that as us telling
- 8:49them how to collect. Yeah, so you just said something
- 8:53and and I am going to take notes from time to time and I said
- 8:56this last time when other people say things, a lot of the times I
- 9:01will write it down because I don't want to then misquote what
- 9:04they just said. But you just said they can't be
- 9:08factual if they're your opinions.
- 9:11Well, some opinions are factual. Then they're not, so they're
- 9:15facts. Right.
- 9:18But if I OK, so let me ask you fairpoint.
- 9:22So if I said I think PSA is grading harder now than they did
- 9:29in the middle 1990s, I think that's a fact.
- 9:35I think that's an indisputable fact, but it's an opinion.
- 9:41But it's really a fact, right? I I think a lot of people would
- 9:48argue it and there isn't enough data tonight.
- 9:51I'm a date. I've worked in data for almost
- 9:5220 years. There is data to say this is
- 9:56really compelling, but we would need to really get into far more
- 10:01data than we have access to, to be able to say convincingly that
- 10:05they are grading hard. And I do believe, I also believe
- 10:08that they're grading harder, to be clear, but I don't think we
- 10:11can say it is a fact that they're grading harder.
- 10:15I think it's extremely compelling.
- 10:17It's probably 95% plus chance they're grading harder or
- 10:21higher, but it's not a it's not a scientifically proven fact.
- 10:31How far from the mean do we have to get before it's
- 10:34scientifically proven? I mean, every single survey has
- 10:40does have a margin of error, but you looking at data knows that
- 10:45for something to be, you know, statistically significant.
- 10:51You know, I mean, I took, I took a couple of stats classes in, in
- 10:55college. So I, I know enough to be
- 10:56dangerous, but it, it you have to get way, you have to get way
- 11:02out to the edges. I don't know, OK, but we're now
- 11:07we're getting into the weeds. So back, back.
- 11:09Let let me pull this back in because I, I drove us off a
- 11:12Cliff there. So let's let's focus on on the
- 11:19real, the real topic, which is when people are giving opinions,
- 11:26are we indirectly steering people along the way that we are
- 11:34thinking? And is that a problem or is that
- 11:37a good thing? Because when I listen to sports
- 11:39talk radio, which to me this is just sports card talk radio,
- 11:43basically all it is is opinions. It's, it's that what this is
- 11:48what the GM should do with the team.
- 11:51We, we got to get rid of this guy and trade him for this guy.
- 11:54And the whole thing is opinions. They're not facts.
- 11:57But if people are taking those opinions and making changes to
- 12:01what they're doing, then maybe those opinions are, are
- 12:08indirectly telling people what to do.
- 12:10Is this something we need to be more careful of, like as
- 12:13collectors, as people who have voices in the space?
- 12:19I used to listen to a lot of sports card radio.
- 12:20Sports talk radio. Wei out of Boston was my radio
- 12:25station for years. 15 years maybe.
- 12:28And those guys are trained to state their opinions as fact,
- 12:34right? I'm trying to think of a good
- 12:38example. Alex Redman.
- 12:41Bregman sucks and they will say it forcefully and and with with
- 12:46meaning. Of course Alex Bregman doesn't
- 12:48suck. But you get the point and I am I
- 12:53I I can't bring myself to do that.
- 12:55I think it makes for better radio when they do that.
- 12:57I think it makes for better YouTube.
- 12:59But for me, my opinions are for me and I want to share them in
- 13:03some cases, but I also don't want to make it seem like my
- 13:09opinions are right and that I struggle with it.
- 13:14I think about it on every single video and I know I miss it
- 13:17sometimes, but every time I'm talking about cards on a video,
- 13:21I remind myself to say I believe this instead of saying something
- 13:28that that I I believe as fact. And I think that you can get
- 13:33yourself in trouble with commenters or or whatever when
- 13:37you're stating your opinion as fact.
- 13:43So if I said something like Mickey Mantle is a safer place
- 13:47to spend money on cards than Drake May, is that an opinion or
- 13:52is that a fact? It is your opinion.
- 13:58It's nuanced because some people will think, well, Drake May has
- 14:01a big runway. He could have a card that's
- 14:05$1000 today and it's worth $10,000 in a month if he goes on
- 14:09a four O run with 1200 yards in those four games, Probably not
- 14:16going to go up 10X. But Mickey Mantle, his cards
- 14:19aren't going to 10X in a month. So it feels like a lot of the
- 14:24times we give our opinions, but people maybe receive them as
- 14:29facts. Or is it that sometimes we don't
- 14:31put the qualifier in there where we say, well, I mean, in my
- 14:35opinion, I think this where we should be putting it in because
- 14:40I don't, I don't want the responsibility.
- 14:44I don't want to tell anyone what to do.
- 14:46I that is the last thing I want to do.
- 14:48What I like doing is I like talking about ideas and concepts
- 14:51like this. Like when I go up to a vintage
- 14:54dealer at the National and he says, you know, you're a moron
- 14:59if you go by, you know, I don't know, some, some break or buy
- 15:07into some break or you buy some repack product or something.
- 15:11You're an idiot if you do that. And, and he's stating it as a
- 15:15fact. But, but it, it is an opinion.
- 15:21It might at times be opinions I agree with, but I, I don't know,
- 15:27I mean, it, it's, it sounds, it sounds like we're we're, you
- 15:31know, just kind trying to dice something that's not really
- 15:35there. But I think that it's a big
- 15:36thing because I think that there are times where we give our
- 15:41opinions and it comes across as if it's a fact.
- 15:45Well, so and so said this and it's like, well, you know,
- 15:49there's more to it than that. I think that there's context and
- 15:52I think that there's, you know, what did they say about the rest
- 15:57of the topic? I mean, I don't know.
- 15:59I don't know. Well, if you say as a YouTube
- 16:03sports card, YouTube, if you say breaks are a scam, breaks are a
- 16:08RIP off and if you join them, you're an idiot.
- 16:11You're just limiting your audience because a lot of people
- 16:15who watch that are going to immediately shut you off and
- 16:17never watch you again. But at the same time, they're on
- 16:24the flip side. A lot of people will like that
- 16:26and like you more. Yeah, One of the things I
- 16:29actually get the most heat about from people who watch the
- 16:36channel or, you know, comment and, and, or meet me and talk to
- 16:41me or send me messages. Some of the most heat I get is
- 16:45that I don't take a strong stance enough on certain topics.
- 16:50There are certain topics that they just, in their opinion,
- 16:53it's a fact that it's a bad thing and I won't get up there
- 16:59and I won't declare it to be a bad thing.
- 17:04And, and on the opposite side of that, there are the times where
- 17:10I'll be talking to. So here I'm I don't know if I'm
- 17:13going to pivot us into a new conversation while continuing
- 17:16this one, but I'm going to do it anyway because it, it's where my
- 17:19head is and it's what I'm thinking about.
- 17:22So there have been a few people who over the last month,
- 17:26especially the rumblings have getting gotten louder of people
- 17:31saying we why do we care about values so much?
- 17:34It doesn't. Values are becoming a problem
- 17:38because too many foot people are just focused on values.
- 17:42This is just a hobby. We should just be having fun.
- 17:45And as soon as you start talking about values, then a lot of the
- 17:49fun and the innocence goes away. So I then put a poll on on my
- 17:56channel and, and if you're going to watch this on YouTube, I'm
- 17:59going to put it up on the screen.
- 18:00I did a poll of my audience and I said the question was, you
- 18:08know, I'm working on an upcoming episode, which best describes
- 18:13you. And the options were I don't
- 18:15care at all about card values. Another option was I care a
- 18:19little bit about card values. Another option was card values
- 18:24definitely matter to me and then one said I only care about card
- 18:28values and 91% of the people were in one of the categories
- 18:36that does care about card values.
- 18:38Only 9% of the people who responded there said I don't
- 18:44care about card values at all. So if I'm doing a show that I
- 18:51want to appeal to a fair amount of people and and I and to me,
- 18:56card values mean at least something.
- 18:58It's certainly not everything but it, but it mean it's part of
- 19:03the equation that I care about maybe less than some people,
- 19:07certainly more than some people. Then then shouldn't I be talking
- 19:11to the 91% instead of the 9%? Yes.
- 19:16So then if I say. If you want a big audience, yes.
- 19:20I but that's that a big audience has never been the goal.
- 19:28I know that some I know people say you're.
- 19:30Oh, OK, Greg. No seriously.
- 19:32Yeah, I know we did. But so.
- 19:35So I feel like what I'm trying to it's it's the same reason I
- 19:40do a monthly video where it's cards under $50.
- 19:43It's sold on eBay because 91% of the audience are buying cards
- 19:49that are less than $50. They're not buying $10,000
- 19:53cards. So if my channel is just about
- 19:55$10,000 cards, I'm talking to like 2 percenters.
- 19:58I'm not talking to normal people.
- 20:00And if there's anything that I am, it's regular.
- 20:03I am I am regular. Eating a lot of fiber.
- 20:07Well, so I don't know, I mean your thoughts on.
- 20:13So when I am talking about value, some people are hearing
- 20:18me saying this guy just keeps talking about value and 91% of
- 20:24the audience is intrigued by that and 9% are he keeps telling
- 20:29us that value is important. And what I'm trying to do is
- 20:32say, I'm trying to tell you the value is important at least
- 20:36somewhat to me. So isn't it the same sort of
- 20:40thing where when I'm talking about a topic that I'm
- 20:44interested in and most people are, that I'm actually talking
- 20:50to the broader audience, but then there are other people who
- 20:55want to watch maybe, but they're like, tired of me talking about
- 20:59value? Yeah.
- 21:01And I would say that there's a good chunk of that 9%, maybe
- 21:05even all of them that are interested in hearing those,
- 21:09those videos that still watch them.
- 21:11And so by only talking about things that aren't related to
- 21:18value of cards, you I think wouldn't last very long as a
- 21:23YouTube or, or, or no, I'm sorry, you would have a, a
- 21:28YouTube channel that would be much smaller.
- 21:31And there are great channels out there that focus on cards.
- 21:35Sets only talk about the backgrounds, that only talk
- 21:38about the the history of cards and sets and the players behind
- 21:42them. And those are great channels,
- 21:44but they tend to be smaller. And John Mangini touched on this
- 21:47as well. You talk about cards, you don't
- 21:49get views. You talk about values, You talk
- 21:52about stories, you talk about scams, you talk about those
- 21:54things. You get a lot of views.
- 21:57That's just human nature. So let me ask you, I mean, I, I
- 22:02don't know if you got a chance. We're recording this on Friday,
- 22:05September 19th. Did you get a chance to listen
- 22:11to or watch the episode that I recorded with Darren are Off
- 22:15topic and Jake and Matt from Providence about values and and
- 22:20whether values have gotten carried away with the importance
- 22:24and if that's taken away from the hobby and if you did hear it
- 22:27or you didn't hear, what's your take on that?
- 22:30Yeah, I watched probably 3/4 of it today.
- 22:32I didn't get through the last quarter of it yet.
- 22:35It's very good video. I think that I'm trying to think
- 22:38of what was noteworthy that I, I I don't recall anything other
- 22:44than Matt being very he was he was pretty funny as he always
- 22:49is. Like, what am I doing here?
- 22:51This is long form is not for me, but I don't remember
- 22:56specifically anything that I took away from it off the top of
- 23:00my head. I was kind of working at the
- 23:02same time as listening. Sure.
- 23:05Yeah. I just think that it's, I think
- 23:09that and, and I've used, I think I've used this example a couple
- 23:13of times, but you know, a few years ago, in fact, I used it
- 23:17fairly recently, but I'll, I'll share it now to kind of defend
- 23:20my take, which is IA few years ago we bought a used boat and,
- 23:27and I didn't even really think twice about buying the used boat
- 23:31because it was like, it was like 5000.
- 23:34I think it we paid 4500 or 5500, I can't remember which.
- 23:38And you know, this little 20 foot boat that we would take out
- 23:42on the lakes and, and have a good time and, and people were
- 23:47like, whoa, you bought a boat? And I'm like, yeah, but if I
- 23:50wanted to sell it tomorrow, I could get the same money out of
- 23:54it. So it's whether the money is
- 23:56sitting in my savings account or whether the money is sitting in
- 24:00a boat doesn't really matter. So it made it a lot easier for
- 24:05me to spend money on a used boat that was 18 years old that was
- 24:11fully depreciated instead of spending it on, you know, a trip
- 24:19or an expensive television or furniture for the back patio or
- 24:26something that in two years will be literally just haul it to the
- 24:29dump. And so when something is a value
- 24:34store for me, it gives me more permission to actually purchase
- 24:40it. So one of the reasons that I am
- 24:43more OK spending money on cards is because if something happened
- 24:47and I need to get rid of them, in most cases, I'm going to get
- 24:51at least most of my money back. And, and because of that storage
- 24:58of value with potential upside and potential some downside, it
- 25:03it it that that matters a lot to me as being a participant in a
- 25:09hobby because the risk is so low.
- 25:12I'm not going out and buying brand new Golf clubs that three
- 25:16days later, if I tried to sell them, you can only get 70% of
- 25:19your money back 'cause they're no longer brand new.
- 25:21Like does that make sense? Yeah.
- 25:26And I think the biggest points that I took from that is that
- 25:28you have a yacht for one, and for two, you throw away all of
- 25:34your furniture every two years and replace it.
- 25:39I, I, I, I think I must have done a fantastic job
- 25:42communicating my thoughts. I don't know.
- 25:47I mean, is it it it? It feels to me that the norm is
- 25:52actually to not. It is to care about value, not
- 25:57to not care. So should the people who don't
- 26:00care, should they just not watch?
- 26:03No, they, they should watch whatever they want to watch.
- 26:05And I think that they're OK with us talking about value.
- 26:08Like I have people who have never graded a card before, like
- 26:11I'm sure you do, who love watching my channel and hearing
- 26:14about these stories and the scams and whatever else.
- 26:19But they never grade a card. They'll watch graded card
- 26:22reveals and I say I like PSA slabs, I like SGCI, like CGC,
- 26:30and they don't, but they don't take offense to it because I'm
- 26:34not saying you're an idiot if you hate these companies.
- 26:39Is collect the card not the grade?
- 26:42Is that is that a fact or is that an opinion?
- 26:49It's neither. That's not an opinion.
- 26:51It's more like a slogan. So buy the card, not the grade
- 26:57isn't an it's a philosophy. It's a philosophy.
- 27:01OK, well, what are some things that cause and I and I want to
- 27:07circle back to the are we telling people how to collect?
- 27:11When when I'm sharing how I collect and and what I like, And
- 27:17I mean when when I say, you know, these 1888 Allen and
- 27:24Ginter pirate cards are the shiz when I say that I'm not telling
- 27:31anybody how to collect right when I say they're beautiful, I
- 27:37love them. Those are all opinions.
- 27:41When I say I'm I really like the looks of of pre war non sport
- 27:47cards. Those are just opinions.
- 27:51They're not facts. But there are times where other
- 27:55people, I feel like and see part of it is, is when you're
- 27:58speaking, you don't know how you're received.
- 28:01Like when I, when I do a video on something, it's like some
- 28:07people say you're, you're telling us what to do.
- 28:11That's bad advice. You know that you're an idiot.
- 28:13And then other people will say, totally agree with you and
- 28:17you're like, you don't really. And that's the the hard part
- 28:20about communication is that every person who is receiving
- 28:26the communication receives it differently based on the
- 28:30baggage, the opinions, their previous experiences, their,
- 28:35their thought process. They all receive it differently.
- 28:38But there are a lot of times where I feel like I'm, I think
- 28:41that I'm presenting an opinion, but somebody thinks I'm forcing
- 28:49facts down their throat or I'm telling people what to do.
- 28:53I mean, every single time I do a video about that mentions SGC or
- 28:58PSA, every single time I get at least one comment that says
- 29:03that's why I buy ungraded because that whole grading
- 29:06thing's a scam. I buy raw cards.
- 29:10It's like, yeah, I mean, that's great.
- 29:14Did I tell you you shouldn't buy raw cards?
- 29:16I've never said buying raw cards is a dumb idea.
- 29:20But I have said one of the things I'm a little bit
- 29:24concerned about with buying raw cards is it's less widely
- 29:30accepted the quality and the value of the card.
- 29:35Like a lot of dealers want to deal in raw cards because
- 29:40there's less information that can be agreed upon and so it
- 29:45creates wider margins. They can say, well, that card
- 29:48probably would grade about a three and then as soon as they
- 29:51own it, that card would probably grade about a six.
- 29:54And now there's more margin. But if it's in a six, we can
- 29:58generally agree it's somewhere between A5 and A7, you know, And
- 30:03so it widens the potential upside.
- 30:08And I think to a certain extent pre war.
- 30:11And, and that's one of the things that the whole movement
- 30:14of of I appeal is, is, well, that card is a better than a
- 30:21normal 3 because it looks like a A6.
- 30:27And I'm, I'm sure I'm guilty of that too.
- 30:29But that's one of the things with the with the I appeal
- 30:32movement is all of a sudden the grade becomes less important
- 30:38when I appeal is introduced. Yeah, absolutely.
- 30:41I think when you have a especially a lower grade card or
- 30:45a card of varied condition, let's say let's say you have a 5
- 30:51and it looks like an 8 then to me, but I appeal this very it's
- 30:57in the eye of the beholder, right.
- 31:03You have a 5. It looks like an 8 to me, but to
- 31:07PSA it didn't. And so the value of that card is
- 31:11in like a high 5 probably if it's well centered, doesn't have
- 31:15anything on the on the front, you're probably going to pay
- 31:18high 5, low 6 prices for that card.
- 31:22But to me, I would treasure that card because it looks like an 8
- 31:27in my I appeal book. So in your opinion, how much are
- 31:36you willing to pay above the, the grade on the holder or a
- 31:44card that looks significantly better in your I appeal
- 31:48preference range? Does that it it do you still say
- 31:52it's, I mean, I mean, I was with you at the National.
- 31:55I, I saw you going around some tables and go, you know, I don't
- 31:58know, like, you know, that's way high for the grade.
- 32:01I mean, we still say. That yeah.
- 32:03And you did a great video on this where you said exactly my
- 32:07feelings where I want to get paid more for my high.
- 32:11I appeal cards, but I don't want to sell it.
- 32:15I don't want to. How did it go?
- 32:18I want to buy it for the grade, but I want to sell it for the
- 32:21look basically. Exactly, and like I said, I you
- 32:25know, I think if you have AI have a great PSA authentic Ted
- 32:29Williams 1949 leaf and it looks it looks like a maybe A4 or A5,
- 32:35but it has paper loss on the back at the time before before
- 32:39the whole I appeal movement really took and took steam a
- 32:43couple years ago, I bought this card at low PSA authentic
- 32:48prices. I think I paid $550 for it and I
- 32:54think it's worth well over $1000.
- 32:58I wouldn't have paid well over $1000 for it.
- 33:03I would have waited for another PSA authentic that is priced
- 33:06like APSA Authentic or a 1.5 to come along.
- 33:11Yeah. So you're like me where you want
- 33:14to, you want to pay the range of the number, but then you want
- 33:21to. I want to have my cake and eat
- 33:23it too, right? Well, I mean, at least we have
- 33:27that in common. And, and I, I, I mean, I, I got
- 33:33a lot of, I got a lot of kickback on that, that video.
- 33:36And I'm like, I, I'm just being honest.
- 33:39Like, I mean, that's the thing too is when I'm being honest,
- 33:45you know, there's always going to be an opinion about that.
- 33:49And not a lot of people will say that they won't.
- 33:54They won't say I want to buy it for the number, But if I had to
- 33:59sell it, which what I generally do is the cards that I do buy
- 34:05that I think how high I appeal for the grade because of this
- 34:11whole, you know, catch 22 for our literary friends.
- 34:16It's what happens is you end up just keeping the card because
- 34:23you aren't willing to sell it or what others would agree that
- 34:29it's worth it. It it's, you know, we all, we
- 34:32all think our kid is the best kid on the team because we
- 34:38remember all the little times that our kid did something that
- 34:43was really good that nobody else noticed.
- 34:46You know, we see all the good in what our kid is doing, but we're
- 34:50quick to forget the bad part of what our kid is doing.
- 34:54And I think it's the same thing with our cards.
- 34:56It's like we focus on the things about them that are great and
- 35:01the things that other people might be annoyed by.
- 35:03Like the low number on it. We're like, but they, but
- 35:06they're but it's great, right? Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:13I want cards that are low grade, high eye appeal, because maybe
- 35:19in 25 years, 30 years, when I go to sell these, maybe I appeal
- 35:22will be far more important than it is now.
- 35:25But I don't have the budget. I want to have a lot of cards
- 35:27and I don't have the budget to buy a lot of cards that are
- 35:31higher grade. So I'd rather buy low grade,
- 35:33high. I appeal.
- 35:35Is the I Appeal movement an opinion or a fact?
- 35:40Oh, it's everybody's opinion and it's different.
- 35:44Like Dylan and I probably have different opinions of eye
- 35:47appeal. I don't remember is he is he
- 35:49anti centering or is he very high?
- 35:51I can't. Remember.
- 35:51Are you kidding? I know he has an extreme take
- 35:54and I can't remember which one. It is it, it's, it is it
- 35:57extreme? It has to be well centered.
- 36:00Yes, I am with Dylan, Dylan and I agree on that.
- 36:03No, no, no, I'm not talking about is is your opinion of of
- 36:07what is a high eye appeal might be different than mine.
- 36:09Some people are all about packed fresh eye appeal and some people
- 36:12are all about centered eye appeal, like some are high color
- 36:16or high registration I appeal, some are a combination of those
- 36:19things. What I'm asking about is the
- 36:21movement. A minute ago you said the high I
- 36:24appeal movement has affected things.
- 36:28Is the movement that you just cited.
- 36:30Is that a a factual thing that that there is actually an an
- 36:37actual universally agreed upon thing that cards that look good
- 36:44for the grade should and are worth more than the ones that
- 36:49don't look good for the grade? Or is that just an opinion that
- 36:53we think that those cards are worth more because of the fact?
- 36:59It's an opinion for sure and I I think that there's more.
- 37:02There is a movement I believe that started and there's even a
- 37:05website coming out pretty soon called I Appeal where you can
- 37:10upload cards. And anyway, it's not my website,
- 37:14but it's, it's pretty awesome. I'm, I'm excited about it.
- 37:17But yeah, it is an opinion that cards with high I appeal should
- 37:22sell for more and do sell for more.
- 37:25Sometimes they don't. What's a fact then give me a
- 37:28fact because we started this and we're we're getting close to,
- 37:32you know, we want to kind of keep these around 4045 minutes
- 37:35and we're at 37 1/2. So to circle back, what is a
- 37:41fact then give me a fact about the hobby A.
- 37:45Fact is that PSA is grading more cards than anybody else.
- 37:51Another fact is the SGC is grading fewer cards than they
- 37:55were six months ago. Because you have concrete data
- 38:00to back that up. Yes.
- 38:03But an opinion is PSA is grading harder than they were five years
- 38:08ago? That may be a fact.
- 38:12It, it is. It's a fact.
- 38:17I mean, come on. But yeah, here's.
- 38:19No, you're right. Here's an opinion.
- 38:21PSA sucks. OK, that's a strong opinion.
- 38:27I'm not willing to go there and I will have people in the
- 38:32comments that will will be pissed that I was unwilling to
- 38:37say that PSA sucks. And there are other people that
- 38:40are going to be pissed that you did say PSA sucks.
- 38:43And I don't know if you were speaking that that's actually
- 38:45your opinion or that that's just an example of an opinion.
- 38:49But there are people on both sides of that.
- 38:52And I, and it's interesting to me and, and this is a topic for
- 38:55another show, but why is it that the grading company debates and
- 39:03conversations are, in my opinion, the most polarizing
- 39:10topics and conversations and videos.
- 39:13I will have more thumbs downs in a video where if I go all in on
- 39:20STC, I'll have a bunch of thumbs downs.
- 39:22If I go in all in on PSA, I'll have a bunch of thumbs downs.
- 39:26It's really interesting that sharing opinions, not facts, but
- 39:31opinions about those two grading companies get people really
- 39:37worked up more so than saying, you know, Willie Mays is better
- 39:42than Mickey Mantle. Like people go well, you know,
- 39:45but but you say PSA is better than SGC or vice versa.
- 39:49And people are ready to, you know, set you on fire.
- 39:54It's tribal. And it's it's about value
- 39:56because if I have my entire collection in SGC slabs and you
- 40:01have your video come out where you say bad things about SGC, I
- 40:05get offended because that's my that's my collection, which is
- 40:10not true. But that that is what happens
- 40:13with people. And people also have chosen
- 40:15sides. I think that if you are APSA
- 40:20person, you. Get very upset if people point
- 40:24out flaws with PSA. If you're an SGC person, you're
- 40:27very upset if people point out that PSA is dismantling SGC.
- 40:33That's just it's, it's tribal, it's side picking, it's
- 40:38political. There's a lot of things going on
- 40:41with grading and grading videos. All right, I like it.
- 40:48I was listening to Chris Sewell and Jeremy the Texas Snowman on
- 40:55yesterday. It's a great video.
- 40:57And Jeremy was asking how Chris got to the at the end, how he
- 41:04says eat your vegetables. And he said he used to just give
- 41:07like 5 quick hits at the end of all the episodes and then that
- 41:12one kind of stuck. So I'm curious for you just for
- 41:16this one, just to wrap it up because we've talked about doing
- 41:18some fun stuff too. I want to give you an
- 41:22opportunity to tell me one thing in any category in anything in
- 41:26the world, one thing that's severely overrated and one thing
- 41:31that's severely underrated go overrated.
- 41:34The TV show Friends Which? On your video on Friday, you
- 41:39said you mentioned must see TV, and the only show you mentioned
- 41:43was must see TV was Friends when Seinfeld was right there.
- 41:47Greg Seinfeld For the record, I I hate the.
- 41:51Show friends. OK yes yes I hate the show
- 41:55friends. I used it because my
- 41:57understanding what I remember is NBC had one night of the week
- 42:02that was like NBC must see TV and it was friends night.
- 42:05But I could be wrong. I don't like friends.
- 42:07My wife watches, Friends were both OK Thursday nights.
- 42:11OK, well, there you go. So.
- 42:13Overrated thing, friends. Most underrated thing.
- 42:17Most underrated? Thing man, this is a tough one
- 42:26boy, you got me here. I don't know.
- 42:35I well, you tell me what your most underrated thing is.
- 42:39Well, I I, I literally just thought.
- 42:41Up this concept 4 minutes ago as you were speaking.
- 42:44So I'm going to needle you a little bit on this.
- 42:48So I'm going to I'm going to go with something that's going to
- 42:50it's going to, it's going to irk you, which is, you know, part of
- 42:54the fun. So the I'll start with the
- 42:56underrated, most underrated thing, one of the most.
- 43:00Underrated things is. Hiking, hiking is fantastic.
- 43:04Love to hike, be in nature, be surrounded by beautiful stuff
- 43:09and not just look down at the trail, the ground, not just have
- 43:13your phone out as you're hiking, but actually getting fresh air,
- 43:18exercise, looking around where I live out in in the community in
- 43:22which we live, we have like 20 miles of single track hiking and
- 43:28biking trails and it's beautiful.
- 43:31And the only reason I don't go more often is because I used to
- 43:34take my dog with me all the time and she loved it.
- 43:37And when I lost my dog it it took some of the joy out.
- 43:41But underrated is going to be hiking overrated just to needle
- 43:48you? And I do believe it is horror
- 43:50movies. Man, I love horror movies.
- 43:56I also love hiking and I went for a hike on Tuesday.
- 43:58I sent you at least one photo out there with my 15 year old
- 44:02and it was amazing. I hadn't been on the trails in
- 44:04years because I used to be a trail runner.
- 44:05We also have dozens of miles of trails.
- 44:07Biking and running trails are all around our neighborhood and
- 44:10I used to go out and run and bike virtually every day for
- 44:14years. But because of my foot injury, I
- 44:16haven't in a few years. And so I got out there, loved
- 44:19it. I'm going to go underrated here
- 44:22since I I still have, don't, haven't used my underrated plain
- 44:26water, just tap water. Drinking it plain has now become
- 44:31underrated because most people are like adding flavoring to it
- 44:34and they're doing all kinds of weird stuff.
- 44:35At my office, everybody is using a Bevy cooler and they swear,
- 44:41they think it's the grown. If you don't use this, you're an
- 44:43idiot, they say. They don't really say that, of
- 44:45course, but people told me I had to 'cause I'm drinking plain
- 44:49water at my desk, I had to try this special Bevy cooler.
- 44:52And you can add caffeine to it. You can add flavors and you can
- 44:55do all this stuff. And so I tried a few of them and
- 44:57I'm like plain water. Plain water is the place to be.
- 45:02And they, they think I'm the old guy and I am the old guy.
- 45:04I'm the oldest on my 30. There's seventeen of us in
- 45:11Maine, and I am the oldest of all of us.
- 45:15I have to do. A quick follow up, when you say
- 45:17water though, what's the worst bottled water and what's the
- 45:21best bottled water? I can't tell the difference I
- 45:24usually. Buy Dasani because it's it's so
- 45:27cheap. Because it's literal tap water.
- 45:30I cannot tell the difference between any sort of bottled
- 45:33water. Oh my gosh, everyone.
- 45:35Out There is going to fully agree when I say the worst one
- 45:38is Arrowhead. It's awful, I've never heard of
- 45:41it. You've never heard of Arrowhead?
- 45:43Water. Is this a West Coast thing?
- 45:46My gosh. Not not out here.
- 45:48Have you heard of Dasani? I just said that's all I ever
- 45:51buy is Dasani. And Poland Spring too, which is
- 45:53amazing. I'm sorry, you said Dasani have.
- 45:55You ever heard of Evian? Of course, Yeah, I would never
- 45:58pay for it. Because you're paying.
- 45:59That's the best one. 3X and it tastes exactly the same.
- 46:04It does not. Taste like Arrowhead.
- 46:06All right, Well, that we're at 46 minutes.
- 46:09This was fun. Again, the goal is once a week,
- 46:12but no promises because life happens.
- 46:15Anything. Any closing parting shots you
- 46:18want to say before we end this? No, I think this is good.
- 46:24Go watch horror movies. Yeah, 'cause.
- 46:28That's where I want to use my emotions and my energies is on a
- 46:33ridiculous movie. So all right, well #2 in the
- 46:39books, Onward and Upward, we have big things in store, lots
- 46:45of plans. Things are going to be unfolding
- 46:47over time. So thanks for listening.
