- 0:33One more chapter will be left next week, but we will hear all
- 0:37about what happens in David's life as he settles back into his
- 0:42throne in Jerusalem. And then from next week we are
- 0:46going to start reading the book of Proverbs together, that we'll
- 0:49we'll get to more of this next week.
- 0:51But the first section of Proverbs tells the story of lady
- 0:56wisdom, essentially, And so we're going to read that story
- 1:00before then. We are going to read a proverb
- 1:03at the end of the week when we finished the book of Psalms, but
- 1:06that's at the end of the year. That's lots of time still to
- 1:09come. Let's settle into this week,
- 1:11Holy Spirit, clear the schedule in our minds and help us learn
- 1:18more of you as we read these words together.
- 1:24All right, friends, let us round out this book.
- 1:27Let's read together. Second Samuel, Chapter 20.
- 1:42There happened to be a troublemaker there named Sheba,
- 1:45son of Bikri, a man from the tribe of Benjamin.
- 1:49Sheba blew a Rams horn and began to chant down with the dynasty
- 1:53of David we have no interest in the son of Jesse.
- 1:57Come on, you men of Israel, back to your homes.
- 2:01So all the men of Israel deserted David and followed
- 2:04Sheba, son of Bikri. But the men of Judah stayed with
- 2:08their king and escorted him from the Jordan River to Jerusalem.
- 2:12When David came to his palace in Jerusalem, he took the 10
- 2:16concubines he had left to look after the palace and placed them
- 2:20in seclusion. Their needs were provided for,
- 2:23but he no longer slept with them, so each of them lived like
- 2:27a widow until she died. Then the king told a Massa,
- 2:31mobilised the army of Judah within three days and report
- 2:36back at that time. So Amasa went out to notify
- 2:39Judah, but it took him longer than the time he had been given.
- 2:43Then David said to Abishai Shiba, son of Bikri is going to
- 2:48hurt us more than Absalom did. Quick, take my trips and chase
- 2:53after him before he gets into a fortified town where he can't
- 2:56reach him. So Abishai and Joab, together
- 3:00with the King's bodyguard and all the mighty warriors, set out
- 3:04from Jerusalem to go after Sheba.
- 3:07As they arrived at the great stone of Gibian, Amassa met
- 3:10them. Job was wearing his military
- 3:13tunic with a dagger strapped to his belt.
- 3:16As he stepped forward to Greater Massa, he slipped the dagger
- 3:20from its sheath. How are you, my cousin Joe?
- 3:23Abs said, and took him by the beard with his right hand, as
- 3:26though to kiss him. Amassa didn't notice the dagger
- 3:29in his left hand and Joab stabbed him in the stomach with
- 3:34it so that his insides gushed out onto the ground.
- 3:38Job did not need to strike again and Amassa soon died.
- 3:43Joab and his brother Abshire left him lying there and
- 3:47continued after Shiba, one of Joe's young men shouted to
- 3:51amasses troops. If you are for Joab and David,
- 3:55come and follow Joab. But a Massa lay in his blood in
- 4:00the middle of the road, and Joe's man saw that everyone was
- 4:04stopping to stare at him. So he pulled him off the road
- 4:07into a field and threw a cloak over him.
- 4:10With the masses body out of the way, everyone went on with Joab
- 4:14to capture Sheba, son of Bikri. Meanwhile, Sheba travelled
- 4:19through all the tribes of Israel and eventually came to the town
- 4:23of Abel Beth Maker. All the members of his own clan,
- 4:28the Bick writes, assembled for battle and followed him into the
- 4:31town. When Joe's forces arrived, they
- 4:35attacked Abel Beth Maker. They built a siege ramp against
- 4:39the town's fortifications and began battering down the wall.
- 4:43But a wise woman in the town called out to Joab.
- 4:47Listen to me, Joab, come over here so I can talk to you.
- 4:51As he approached, the woman asked.
- 4:54Are you Joab? I am, he replied.
- 4:58So she said. Listen carefully to your
- 5:00servant. I'm listening, he said.
- 5:04Then she continued. There used to be a saying.
- 5:08If you want to settle an argument, ask advice at the town
- 5:11of Abel. I am one who was peace loving
- 5:14and faithful in Israel, but you were destroying an important
- 5:18town in Israel. Why do you want to devour what
- 5:21belongs to the Lord and Joe? I replied.
- 5:24Believe me, I don't want to devour or destroy your town.
- 5:28That's not my purpose. All I want is a man named Sheba,
- 5:32son of Bikri from the Hill Country of Ephraim, who has
- 5:36revolted against King David. If you hand over this one man to
- 5:40me, I will leave the town in peace, all right, the woman
- 5:44replied. We will throw his head over the
- 5:47wall to you. Then the woman went to all the
- 5:50people with her wise advice. They cut off Shebaa's head and
- 5:55threw it out to Joab. So he blew the Rams horn and
- 5:59called his troops back from the attack.
- 6:01They all returned to their homes and Joab returned to the king at
- 6:06Jerusalem. Now Joeb was the commander of
- 6:09the army of Israel. Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, was
- 6:13the captain of the King's bodyguard.
- 6:16Adoniram was in charge of forced labour.
- 6:19Jehoshaphat, son of Ali Hood, was the royal historian.
- 6:23Shiva was the court secretary, Zadok and Abiathar were the
- 6:27priests and Ira, descendant of Jaya was David's personal
- 6:32priest. Our Lord Justice David knew that
- 6:47he needed to stand unopposed as King.
- 6:51Lord, we want you to stand unopposed as King of Our lives.
- 6:57All those things that would vie for number one place in our
- 7:03lives. All those other priorities that
- 7:06stick their neck out in the way of you, Lord, We pray that they
- 7:12would be cleared from our schedule, cleared from our
- 7:15hearts, cleared from our minds, so that you alone sit atop the
- 7:22priorities of our life. Because you are our God and we
- 7:27love you and we wanna worship you alone.
- 7:32Hallelujah. We worship you, and it's in the
- 7:37glorious name of Jesus that we pray all these things.
- 7:41Amen.
