- 2:55my Friday co host. You'll know her, you'll love her around Charleston more
- 3:00and Robinson, how are you good morning? I am doing great. It's
- 3:02great to have This is the second time I think you've been on the show.
- 3:06Thank you him on a Mayor Monday segment. But you've never co hosted
- 3:07the intern. I've never show hosted. I'm so excited to be back on
- 3:10Harry and with you, Dave. We're gonna have so much fun. We
- 3:13are going to have fun, and we're gonna get to know Morgan. So
- 3:15I said, she's one of those people in Charleston everybody seems to know.
- 3:17Most people like Mode, most of them. I definitely have some, yet
- 3:23the majority of the people like And so we're gonna get to know Morgan,
- 3:25what it is that she does, what it is that she has none.
- 3:28Plus we're gonna play ten questions a little bit later on with Morgan Robinson too.
- 3:31Let you know what you need to know about Morgan Robinson. All right,
- 3:35So welcome in our good friend Hannah Gardner from the Canal Charleston Man Association
- 3:38with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week. Hannah. How are
- 3:42you? I'm good? How are you? I'm doing fine? Hannah Morgan
- 3:46Morgan, Hannah, Hey, Hannah, how are you all right? I'm
- 3:47good. Introductions are now out of the way. Let's talk about our pet
- 3:52of the week this week. Hannah. Picture posted as always is on Dave
- 3:54Allen Radio and Facebook and at Dave a seventy on Twitter. This week we
- 3:59have the story of Sid. Tell us about Sid. Yeah, so Sid
- 4:05is a male. He is two years old. He is not fixed yet,
- 4:12but he will be before he leaves the shelter. He is microchips and
- 4:16vaccinated, so he is good to go on that. And like I said,
- 4:21he's two years old, so his vaccinations are all up today. He's
- 4:25got them all and he is ready on those. He did come in as
- 4:29a stray to the shelter. And then he also pulls on the leash when
- 4:34he walks a little bit, but not not anything like super excessive. He
- 4:40just pulls and tugs a little when he gets distracted. He does really well
- 4:45with other playful dogs. He's actually just like a really all around great dog.
- 4:48He wants to play, but he also wants to live with Yeah,
- 4:53but he also wants to go grab his toy. So's He's a really really
- 4:57loose and wiggly and happy dog. And he is just He hasn't given us
- 5:02any red flags for anything so far. He's just an all around family dog.
- 5:08I would say he'd be good for that. That's so cute, Hannah.
- 5:11I have to tell you my husband saw the picture that we posted on
- 5:15socials and the first thing he texted me this morning was, don't bring the
- 5:18dog home. We have three rescues from knath Charleston Humane Association. I like
- 5:24to call them the rat pack. What kind of dogs you have? Obviously
- 5:28they're MutS yea with two of them are like really heavy Chihuahua mixes. They
- 5:32were brothers. And then Stella is the worst date night in history. A
- 5:36pit bull in Chihuahua mix, a pitt in Chiuawa mix, a pitt in
- 5:41Chihuahwa mix, the dynamics of that. But she is a strange girl,
- 5:45but we love her very much. Well, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 5:47There's nothing wrong with them. Like the DNA testing on him. We're definitely
- 5:50those dog parents as we wanted to know what, Yeah, and that's what
- 5:55she is. What about Sid? Had any idea what Sid is? Um?
- 5:59No, Actually I'm not sure what Sit is. He is smaller,
- 6:03so I believe he's like right under forty pounds. I think he's not a
- 6:11really big dog. He's a good medium averageige dog. So his looks though
- 6:16I honestly couldn't tell you, I don't know. He's a good West Virginia
- 6:20brown dog you get West n good old boy and he's very patriotic. In
- 6:25his photo, I love it you really decked him out in the road white
- 6:28and blue. He does. He looks like the perfect family dog. You
- 6:30said he's great with kids. He's got some energy because he's too, but
- 6:32he's not in that puppy face, so he's not going to chew up everything.
- 6:35What a perfect dog for your family. Yes, he is a really,
- 6:40really great dog. I actually got to spend time with him the other
- 6:43day and he is super super sweet. He's very very playful, but he
- 6:47also will lay with you and just sit around. And I'm sure he would
- 6:53sit around and watch TV just as much as he would love to go hiking
- 6:56or walking or on travel or whatever, he's a really good dog. Well,
- 7:00we say each week and again, Hannah guarded for the Canal Charleston Humane
- 7:02Associations here with our adopt me, please spend up the week, and we
- 7:05say every week this would be the perfect dog. But this one maybe it
- 7:11may it may be the perfect dog. I mean he looks pretty perfect to
- 7:14me. Yeah, and great with kids, as you said, and great
- 7:16with other playful dogs. Well, Hannah, I understand that you folks are
- 7:19gonna be at Todd Judy, Mitsubishi and Jefferson today and tomorrow. I think
- 7:24it starts at noon. I think it's so cool to Todd and Becky and
- 7:27folks over there to do this. All adoption fees are covered by the dealership
- 7:30and there are so actually some great pictures of some of the animals that will
- 7:36be up for adoption posted on the Canal Charleston Humane Association Facebook page. It's
- 7:41great to get these animals out, Hannah from time to time. Great for
- 7:43you guys to get out as well. Yeah. Yeah, So we'll definitely
- 7:47be at Todd Judy today and tomorrow, And basically Todd Judy is just sponsoring
- 7:55the adoption fees of the animals that we're taking there. So that is really
- 8:00amazing and we're really appreciative of that. So we're excited and we're ready to
- 8:03get the weekend over with, but we also want to find all of these
- 8:07animals at home. And we also are going to be doing Todd Judy again
- 8:11next weekend at the mar met location. Okay, so you get to mitsu
- 8:16Vsci location and Jefferson today tomorrow and then Mark Metton next weekend. Remind me,
- 8:20Hannah, and we'll mention that again on the segment next week. All
- 8:24right, what are you in need of right now? And I say that
- 8:26because I see your post on Facebook and we actually have people that are involved
- 8:30with the Humane Association that will text the show from time to time and say,
- 8:33hey, just a reminder they need wet food or they need blankets,
- 8:35and then you dry food. What are you in need of up there now,
- 8:39Hannah? Yeah, so we definitely still could use some dog food,
- 8:45adult dogs food, and then we could also use some kittens food, but
- 8:52we still are pretty focused on the dog food. I think we did get
- 8:56a good bit, but that goes really fast. We still are hot up
- 9:01in capacity, but I wouldn't say like over capacity but we're still up there.
- 9:07So all this food that we're getting them going in so fast, and
- 9:11we love to see it coming in, But we still could do some of
- 9:13that. We also could use some hashtags, some down dish soap. And
- 9:18I always always always say, if you don't know what to get the shelter,
- 9:22just go ahead and get some dog collars and some dog leashes, because
- 9:26we always need those perfect not the retractable leashes though, just the normal leasha
- 9:31is right not yes, yes, yeah. They could be like the slip
- 9:35leads, or they could be just like your good old quick leads. Just
- 9:39anything that we could use to walk these doggies. I think you have a
- 9:43co host in the background. Well, and if you're new to the segment,
- 9:45that's not Hannah's not actually at the shelter, that's at her house.
- 9:50You missed it a couple of weeks ago, two weeks ago on the segment
- 9:54when we lost Hannah for a bit because her dogs ran away while she was
- 9:56on the air. Do you remember that, Hannah, it's just two weeks
- 9:58ago, right. Did you get that fence taken care of because you said
- 10:01you're gonna have to work on the fence there because literally, I mean the
- 10:05great moments in live radio and Morgan you can relate to that. I mean,
- 10:07Hannah just she just ghosts, man, she's gone, and because her
- 10:13dogs got it. And then I have people texting the show going, well
- 10:16is she okay? Did she get them? And so? But but yeah,
- 10:18we got the dogs back. Did you get the fence taken care of?
- 10:20Defence is on the way. We had to get fencing, so it's
- 10:26on the way and we're going to be putting the whole new fencing up.
- 10:28We had to escape artists as well. With still have one of our rescues.
- 10:31She would jump the fence. Now we've made her too chunky and she
- 10:35can't get her bum over whatever it takes. Yeah, I mean, oddly
- 10:39enough, that's the same reason why I don't climb fences. Yeah, all
- 10:43right, Hannah, I appreciate it. We'll talk to you next week.
- 10:45Thanks a lot, Thank you. It's hand a Garden from the Canal Charles
- 10:48and Jumaine association with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week. Said
- 10:52is a dog's name and the pictures posted on Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and
- 10:56at Dave a seventy on Twitter. You said it best. They did a
- 10:58good job of dressing this dog up for the fourth of July. It was
- 11:01just coming up. He needs to come to the regatta. I mean,
- 11:03I hope he has a family by them, but I feel like regatta,
- 11:07he's going to be down there. I'm lining a boat somewhere, just holding
- 11:09court over all of us. He looks like Uncle Sam. Yeah, all
- 11:13right, so sit as a dog's name, two years old, great with
- 11:16kids, great with playful dogs. They're still working with him on the leash
- 11:20a little bit. They said, he tends to pull a little bit,
- 11:22but you know, it's okay. That's just the And what I liked about
- 11:26the dog, Morgan, is that what from what Hannah says, is that
- 11:28he's just as happy to take a hike as he is to chill on the
- 11:33couch. Absolutely. I'm telling you, these dogs just want some love,
- 11:35they want a family. They're gonna do what you want him to do.
- 11:37They're gonna walk with you, hike with you, sleep with you, snuggle
- 11:41you. At least that's in my experience. And my dogs are horrible,
- 11:43and all three of yours, as you said, came from the shelter.
- 11:46That's cool. From the Canal Charleston Humane Association. All three of them are
- 11:50completely spoiled. We call them the rat pack. They've totally taken over our
- 11:54lives and now they've been in our empty nesters. They are our new children.
- 11:58There you gods have been replaying. That's all you gotta do, all
- 12:01right, Go get to sid. Just contact folks at the Canal Charleston Humane
- 12:05Association and again they're out on location at Todd Judy Mitsubishi today and tomorrow from
- 12:11noon to two out in Jefferson. We'll have some pets and they actually on
- 12:13their Facebook page if you want to see what they're going to have out there.
- 12:16They're actually posted on the Canal Charleston Humane Association Facebook page, so you
- 12:20can actually go and you can look at at the animals are going to have
- 12:22there. And again next week they'll be at Marmette. Five eighty Live is

- 15:50best people of the best people, of the best people. I don't even
- 15:52need to be pretty soon you don't What are you? Who are you exactly?
- 15:56How who are you? The show? But once and just take over
- 16:00like like an intervention intervation. That's a great one. That's a great one.
- 16:03Moses sonor group live by the last night it had that Riverfront Park in
- 16:07the show of Bomb Stage. Jim Strawn is here to talk about it and
- 16:10via the Bigley Piggley Wiggly hot Line. We have our own. I say
- 16:12he's our own because you hear his show weekly here on the WCHS network for
- 16:17the Appolatch and soul Man Extraordinary Aristotle Jones. Uh, he's with us trying
- 16:22to Aristotle. Good morning, how are you? Good morning? I'm doing
- 16:25I'm doing great. Man. We got in from Huntington last night. We
- 16:26had a show down the are about dere Pullman Squares about three am. Aristotle,
- 16:33This is Jim Strawn. I saw that you were down there last night.
- 16:34How'd that show go? Man? It was at a warm up for
- 16:37tonight's Yeah, I hear your brother got together and um, we're ready to
- 16:41rock out tonight man, Roster. I fink he's going to be a great
- 16:42show. Ready to kick it off. I mean with you and Roster Rafiki.
- 16:47I know you got things started last night and Huntington, but we're we're
- 16:49excited to have you had had that Riverfront Park. You'll take center stage about
- 16:53six thirty. You got sixty minutes to entertain the audience. I've been I've
- 16:56been describing you a morning per you and I love this. You were influenced.
- 17:02I'm thinking he's like a Bill Withers and Darius Rutger rolled into one.
- 17:06So if you like either one of those guys that I love them both.
- 17:08Aristotle, you're the man. You're the total package. Brother. Well you
- 17:12just keep saying that, man, I will, I will. You don't
- 17:15have to pay me, you don't have to pay I just do this kind
- 17:18of stuff. I can gosh where Aristotle. I had the pleasure of seeing
- 17:22you open for Haley Reinhart at the Clay Center and nice, you killed it.
- 17:27I love the Clay Center, It's such a beautiful venue. You fit
- 17:30in perfectly with that classic soulf of voice. I love that you call yourself
- 17:33an Appleachian soul man. I think that it's a perfect descriptor what was you
- 17:37named? A legacy you know with Bill Withers, Johnny Johnson of course,
- 17:41like you know, influencers like Bob Thompson, and just like growing up as
- 17:45an Appalachian in West Virginia, you know, man, I had to find
- 17:48my own voice. So I took a queue from my grandfather. He was
- 17:51a gospel and soul singer who traveled around um, you know, Cole Camps
- 17:55back when it was a little bit thick, more segregated into the back black
- 17:57populations and he was singing in church on some days. So so I'm inspired
- 18:00by gospel blues. Um, you know doo wop, R and B.
- 18:04You got Little Ray Charleston, Yeah, don't you got Little Ray charleson yea
- 18:07Rachel Little Charles. He put out a country album. Yeah. He was
- 18:11one of the first genres lending artists. And so in West Virginia, we're
- 18:15lucky because you know, we don't we get to define ourselves. And there's
- 18:18a creative renaissance that's going on in the area with UM shows like Live on
- 18:22the Levy and like of course Pullman Square and the Ruby Summer Concert series up
- 18:25here in Morgantown. I mean, it's just like an amazing time to be
- 18:27a West Virginia musician year. So I want to talk about your radio show.
- 18:30Now you have a show that airs here, and that's right. Talk
- 18:33about a show a little bit well sounds good to me is exactly what I'm
- 18:37talking about. I get to do a deep dive on that creative renaissance and
- 18:41talk to UM West Virginia musicians and artists that are either from here or traveling
- 18:45through about what it means to be a creative person in Appalachian the twenty first
- 18:48century. We get to highlight all their new songs that are coming out.
- 18:52So every Saturday morning on right here on five a d w c HS,
- 18:56you can check out Sounds Good to Me, and I mean it's fantastic.
- 19:00Charleson has given me a lot to love. You guys love West Virginia music,
- 19:03and we love to come down and rock out. Absolutely, I should
- 19:04check out the show on Saturday morning. That's the name of the show,
- 19:07sounds good to When you ask Arisonto that, he said it sounds good to
- 19:11me, I thought, well, sure, it sounds good to you.
- 19:12You're you're the host. Better with you, I just put that together.
- 19:17Just now, I'm so slow, I'm so I would never make a good
- 19:19guest host with like I'm gonna let you know. That's how I got this
- 19:22show. I just named it something that people couldn't turn down. Yeah,
- 19:25yeah, yeah, they have to do. It's just giving me the hard
- 19:27song. Oh, if you need a guest co host on your show,
- 19:30I'm in. I love Hey Morgan. I want to hear your I want
- 19:33to know all about your musical taste. Man, I love it, you
- 19:37know, Yeah, I mean honestly, Like, do you guys know many
- 19:40more West Virginia artists, because like everybody knows, like the big guys.
- 19:42You know, you mentioned Bill Withers or even something like Charles Wesley, Godwin
- 19:45now or Kathy Mattella. But the music scene in West Virginia is so vibrant,
- 19:49like Christian Lopez, Christian Lopez, Christian Panhanda. Right, he's gonna
- 19:56be doing the Ruby Concert Series. I think in Morgantown he'll be. He'll
- 19:59be up hear in Morgantown tonight. So Aristotle, you'll you'll feel his vibe
- 20:03tonight. He has he has performed on the shown Bomb stage and had that
- 20:07river from Park I fed about four or five years ago. Yes, for
- 20:11I mean since I was a little kid. Yeah, you know, man,
- 20:12I would come up. I grew up in Huntington's so we would always
- 20:15come up to, you know, for the Stern Wildward Gatta and of course
- 20:18for Alive with the levee. Here you get up there. I've seen so
- 20:22many great acts maybe on the stage down there. I was like, man,
- 20:26I gotta get there, gotta get there. What can I do?
- 20:26You remember me when I were a young a younger man's hat right, you'll
- 20:30remember, Yeah, so you're not. I mean, I've been doing it
- 20:33almost as long as you are been on this planet. R I've been around.
- 20:37A matter of fact, we've probably hung out many times and know each
- 20:40other. I love it. So Aristotle, we we got you at six
- 20:44thirty. I'm just going to mention to the audience again, you'll you'll go
- 20:45for an hour. We'll take a little break at seven forty five. We'll
- 20:49do two forty five minutes sets with Rosta Rafiki. And of course they're from
- 20:55They started to Morgantown in the late eighties and then they did a lot of
- 20:57shows up there in the nineties to kind of dis band and ninety seven got
- 21:00back together in O seven and been touring. So it's one of my favorite
- 21:06genres, reggae, reggae rock band. So I look forward to rocking out
- 21:10with them. I look forward to meeting listening to you and your great vibes.
- 21:14The Appalachian soul man. We're gonna have great food vendors down there day.
- 21:18We're gonna have some great spirited beverages. We're gonna have something for the
- 21:21children. We're gonna I don't care if you're two or one hundred and two,
- 21:23You're gonna have a great time. The boaters have been coming out.
- 21:26We've had three in a row. I'm looking for four in a row.
- 21:29Picture perfect weather evenings. Rain rolled through this morning here Charleston, but it's
- 21:33supposed to be fine by the afternoon of the evening. Maybe even a longing
- 21:37was just now coming out. We finished our trip to a thunder, no
- 21:41thread of rain tonight. Fans, if you're waiting, don't wait any longer.
- 21:44Just know it's going to be a picture perfect evening. Seventy four degrees
- 21:47a night, little breeze off the Majesty Canal, the mountains will come alive
- 21:49with some amazing music. Aristotle at six thirty. Roffie was really cool about
- 21:57that stage being down the river and in between the hills and everything. It's
- 22:00just a natural ampathy and and that's why they're making a lot of music in
- 22:04West Virginia, all the hills and hollers. We got the Clay Center inside,
- 22:08we have the we have the hat at outside, and they're both perfect.
- 22:12Father, You're right, hey, Dave, I gotta I gotta run,
- 22:15brother, Yeah, you gotta been fun. You gotta go all right,
- 22:18well, Jim's gotta go, But to Aristotle, hang out with us.
- 22:21You're just one tonight, my friend. I look forward to it.
- 22:23I can't wait to hang out again. Man, we'll remember this time a
- 22:26brother. All right, hey guys, all right, Aristotle, I want
- 22:30to get back to you just for a moment when people and you've you've talked
- 22:33about it just a little bit there, when people come out for your show,
- 22:37what is the one takeaway that, whether it's here in Charleston or whether
- 22:41it's at as you said, You're a pullmand Square and Honey Titter in Morgantown
- 22:44as part of the Ruby series that they're doing up there, what's the one
- 22:47thing that people after the show, if they come up to you, say
- 22:49to you and say, wow, I wasn't expecting that. See, you
- 22:53know, I tell a story. I try to like communicate exactly the importance
- 22:59in the legacy of the black contribution or Black creator contribution in West Virginia,
- 23:03because, like, man, did you know that rock and roll the original
- 23:07Johnny B. Good was from Fairmont, just down the road. His name
- 23:11was Johnny Johnson and he inspired like when when Chuck Barry was seeing about Johnny
- 23:15be good he was talking about him. So I think it's a sense of
- 23:18pride that there was a legacy of soul music and an R and B music
- 23:22that came through West Virginia before the Interstate, because the Interstate went through like
- 23:26the east end of Charleston, or like through the black neighborhoods of Huntington.
- 23:32But before that, you know, artists like James Brown or Edda James or
- 23:37um, you know, Aretha Franklin. When they were touring the East coast,
- 23:41they would stop in the small coal mining populations and the black populations and
- 23:45put on these amazing shows and then you would have things to stem out like
- 23:48Bill Withers, and then you would have um, you know, artists like
- 23:52myself. And so what I think what it is is it makes the legacy
- 23:56of music in West Virginia's place in modern music. It brings it to the
- 24:02forefront. So we just celebrate that and people I hear all kinds of stories
- 24:06about oh this is when still until it came to town and played at this
- 24:10little church, and it's really a connective experience. My goal is to make
- 24:15everybody kind of forget about what they were doing, you know, at work
- 24:18before they got there, everybody comes together, and then we're all smiling and
- 24:22having a great time, feeling like we're better off for having spent a little
- 24:25bit of time together. You know, one thing that I would like to
- 24:26do. I think somebody that's much smarter than I am should do. Aristotle's
- 24:30put together a book about some of these artists that have WROT. And I'm
- 24:34not talking about playing, you know, at the necessarily here at Charles the
- 24:38Collisham Convention Center of the Huntington Civic centeror whatever. I'm talking about playing these
- 24:42smaller venues. I'm from Logan County, Okay, in Logan County. James
- 24:48Brown played in Logan County. I continue A Turner in the late sixties played
- 24:52at the Armory. There's a place in Logan called Monaville. It's about five
- 24:55miles five to ten miles out of I continue. A Turner came here in
- 24:59the nineteen sixties to an armory that holds maybe maybe eight hundred people. Crazy,
- 25:06Yeah, I see what that was the history and legacy of soul music,
- 25:08and then that went to on to inspire a generation of musicians. But
- 25:11what happened when the interstate came through is that a lot of those folks they
- 25:17went off to um the bigger cities to kind of restart their lives. And
- 25:22so people forget that soul and R and B it came from rural porch picking
- 25:26and you know that kind of avenue. And then all of a sudden it
- 25:30kind of went everything called less than the bigger cities. Then you all Philadelphia
- 25:34or Saint Louis or Chicago was where it was born. But man, rock
- 25:37and roll, soul, R and B American music was it was derived in
- 25:41rural populations of royal communities. And that makes me be a little bit prouder
- 25:45as of West Virginia. And it makes the story of West Virginia and Appalachia
- 25:48is something that we can move into the twenty first century. We would probably
- 25:52check it out. We were at the forefront of it. And so I
- 25:55mean, I love just like you told me your story. I hear stories
- 25:57like that all the time. You know what you should check out? Says
- 26:00you know lady dan Oh God talk about her transformative musical experience. She will
- 26:07make you forget. She'll make you forget your day at work the past year.
- 26:11Like she she takes you to another realm. Like her voice is just
- 26:15so beautiful, and she's such a storyteller with her songs, it's amazing.
- 26:18Well, she's also going on to tell the story. There's a she's making
- 26:22a five part film series where she's going around this date and it's called Those
- 26:26Who Came Before, and it's all about kind of finding out who those creative
- 26:32contributors to black West Virginia, creative contributors UM from the early twentieth century and
- 26:36what they were talking about. So she's on making UM. She just did
- 26:40the release of her second installment and she's finishing up the third installment. I
- 26:44was featured in the first installment and so it's really cool, So you got
- 26:47to check it out. It's called Those who Came Before, Lady D and
- 26:49it's just about everything you were talking about about going through and finding out who
- 26:55came to town when they were playing, the gospel music influence, the soul
- 26:57and R and B influence. Bob Thompson has a big role in there,
- 27:02talking about Charleston before the Interstate came through and what it was like when the
- 27:07East End when everybody was like playing and and it was a real integrated scene.
- 27:11And because West Virginia is a small town. But also because or a
- 27:15small state, but because they have the riverboats. All the musicians from you
- 27:19know, they would come up to Mississippi and then on the Ohio on the
- 27:22riverboats, they would get off in West Virginia, hang out with all the
- 27:26people here for about a week, trade off, and then they would some
- 27:30other musicians would get on and go back down South. And they would do
- 27:33that. So there was a rich, rich legacy of soul in R and
- 27:37B and black creative contributors coming through West Virginia. Plus you have m like
- 27:41the education standpoint, like Carter G. Woodson down in Huntington. West Virginia
- 27:45was such a really really innovative plays as far as like integration. And with
- 27:51Juneteenth coming up this weekend and Monday and then West Virginia's Birthday right next,
- 27:56I think it's a perfect justaposition, like the message of like freedom and liberty
- 28:00and equal rights for all Americans. Because the motto of West Virginia is a
- 28:03mountain there will always be free in the motto of June tenth is like now
- 28:07all Americans are free. And so man as a black West Virginia I haven't
- 28:11been more proud of the state. You know growing up, because now I
- 28:15feel like I have a place in the community and through my music. My
- 28:18grandfather always told me that he goes man, just be yourself, man,
- 28:21And I always look for a place to be myself because you know, I
- 28:23would hear like, you know, country music, through I'd hear like folk
- 28:29music or bluegrass music, and I really liked it. But I didn't know
- 28:32that there was a soul music legacy in West Virginia. And then all of
- 28:34a sudden to find out through my own roots and through my own connection,
- 28:38and then to find other people that are going through the same experience. Man.
- 28:41Now, when I get on stage and I get to stand there and
- 28:44be proud and say, hey, I'm the apple Aachi of soul man Aristotle
- 28:47Jones, We're blending all these cool styles and guess what it's from right here
- 28:49in West Virginia, and people are just blown away. And plus I got
- 28:52a really cool horn section. I got a really grooving rhythm section. There's
- 28:57about ten of us on stage. Everybody's dancing, and it's a lot of
- 29:00call and response and you're just gonna have a great time. I love it.
- 29:03You're going to bring the party tonight. Aerosol, And I think you
- 29:06summed it up correctly. West Virginia is a small town and the thing I
- 29:10love about it most and you said it best. We're supporting each other,
- 29:12musicians supporting musicians, community supporting the arts, and all mountaineers are free.
- 29:18Yeah, and you get the nail on the head because, like I say,
- 29:19there's a creative renaissance and in the musician in creative realm. What we're
- 29:25trying to do. It's like we're trying to build the scene that we want
- 29:27to be a part of. And that's part of sounds good to me too.
- 29:30That's one of those really fun aspects of it when you talk to a
- 29:33lot of different musicians. I think I've done about one hundred and two episodes
- 29:37now, so when I've interviewed probably two hundred different musicians from around this state.
- 29:42We're all looking for opportunities to just be heard. So we're trying to
- 29:45connect the bands with the fans. So it's a great way to, you
- 29:48know, just dive in and find new music that you might like from your
- 29:52neighbor. You're like, oh, man, I didn't even know he played
- 29:55in music, and he's out here with this amazing music, but it's also
- 29:59a great way to here like the story. You know, I think creative
- 30:02people are telling the story of what it's like to be in Appalachian now.
- 30:06You know, if you listen to the music of the time, you're always
- 30:08going to kind of hear the undercurrent about the struggle and the pain and the
- 30:12love and the connection. And so whenever the artist what everybody's really longing for,
- 30:18it's just an opportunity to be seen. And so what's happening now,
- 30:22it's things like Live on the Levy and things like the Ruby Summer concert Series
- 30:25and that Palatine Park they have a concert series. The city governments are asking
- 30:30the musicians who should be there and giving us a chance to bring our voice
- 30:33to the table. And we're like, look, man, you can go
- 30:36out of state and find anybody, and you can pay anybody from anywhere in
- 30:38the world. And man, if you reinvest in the artists in West Virginia
- 30:41to give us a platform to be heard, then we're gonna have a much
- 30:45richer and much diverse story to share with the rest of the world. We
- 30:48can define our narrative from the inside out versus the outside in. And man,
- 30:52I take that as a point of pride. And I know many many
- 30:56musicians, visual artists, actors, writers that are all filling that same vibe.
- 31:02So, Man, I encourage all the listeners to just get out there
- 31:04and get engaged, because, like I mean, West Virginia and Appalachia,
- 31:07it's a place to be right now. We've got lots of them hills and
- 31:11hollers, So we should scream it. Woud We just climbed to the ball
- 31:12on top of screaming loud. All right, Aristotle, we gotta leave it
- 31:17there. It's been a pleasure to have you on the show. We'll see
- 31:18it live on the Levy tonight. Man, thanks a lot, Yeah,
- 31:21and check out sounds good to me tomorrow morning at eight am right here on
- 31:25you know the voice of Charleston. All right, Aristotle, we'll talk soon.
- 31:27Thanks a lot, Bud, Hey, we'll see you many, Aristotle.
- 31:30Gen you know he's gonna be okay when he learns how to open up
- 31:32a little bit. I mean, yeah, he's really reserved. I thought
- 31:34we're going to really have to pull things out of it. He does a
- 31:37great job. If you give a chance, check out his show again Saturday
- 31:40mornings here on the WCHS Network. But again he will be at live on
- 31:45the Leva tonight with Rosta Raffiki. Am I pronouncing that? Y yeah,

- 35:25this weekend in the area of wine and jazz. We're going to make it.
- 35:29I mean, it's just unbelievable, these June Teeth activities. And I
- 35:31know I'm gonna be leaving several things out. I want to throw this in
- 35:35there. Yesterday I had my buddy Chris Withrow from the Shrine Club. They
- 35:40have their fish fry going on today at the starts at four at the Benny
- 35:45Keadam Shrine there on Courier Street next to the Coliseum and Convention Center. I
- 35:49think it's fifteen bucks and you get fish, hush puppy, slow, the
- 35:53whole deal. Plus if you want to dine in, they have a cash
- 35:57bar and it's open to anybody that wants to Commy don't have to be Remember
- 35:59there's four four and so here's what I did because I really truly believe in
- 36:05the work that the Shrine Club does. Um I made a donation when Christmas
- 36:08here yesterday. So if you're a first responder, okay, the first first
- 36:14responder that comes in to the Benny Keenam Shrine today starting at four o'clock,
- 36:19cop EMT whatever. As long as you're a first responder, your meals on
- 36:22me. I paid for the meal for now. I want the five hundred
- 36:28of you guys showing up, okay, because you know I'm working a first
- 36:30reasons No no, no, no, no, you didn't hear that.
- 36:32You did not hear that. But the first first responder that goes in,
- 36:36that goes in your meals paid for by me. That's so great. I'll
- 36:38get there at four o'clock and get there, enjoy, have a spirit of
- 36:42beverage, then head down to the levy for us. There you go,
- 36:45Bill. Yak Fest is going on this weekend. We got Bill Curry with
- 36:47us right now. Bill, good morning, how are you? I couldn't
- 36:51be better? Thank you? And I got Morgan Robinson here as my co
- 36:53host today tell us all about yak Fest. I had the Mayor on earlier
- 36:58this week. Mayor Scott James was on me Or Monday. On Monday,
- 37:00big happenings tomorrow in the Land of the Red Dragons there and the surrounding areas,
- 37:05talk about it. I'm going to tell you all about what's happening with
- 37:07the tour to Coal. Yeah that's fine. Yeah, that's the Cold River
- 37:10Group, Yeah yeah, event, and it's all about paddles we're putting paddlers
- 37:16in, maybe have as many as two thousand, and they're all going to
- 37:21end up at the Saint Albans Jats pit exactly, exactly. Yeah, it
- 37:24all starts on the tour to Cold and then goes there. So talk about
- 37:28exactly what all goes into pulling this thing off with the tour to col All
- 37:31right, well, the tournicle starts tomorrow morning at eight thirty. Of course,
- 37:36the mayor is going to be there along with the County Commissioner, Lance
- 37:39Wheeler and other dignitaries. We're going to kick off and open and send these
- 37:45paddlers downstream. In the meantime, it's just paddler. Tonight, we'll be
- 37:51hosting about eight hundred people who are bringing their kayaks into the Tornado Park parking
- 37:58area to leave their kayaks in order to be ready in the morning to join
- 38:02another thousand to get into the river. How's that's I mean, that's amazing.
- 38:09And here's the thing about it is is and we'll talking to Mayor James
- 38:13about this and several others as well. And you know this, the economic
- 38:15impact of this thing is incredible. I mean because all those people that come
- 38:21in they're coming, And you said, Bill, they're coming from all over
- 38:23and they're coming here and they're spending time in hotels, some are campings,
- 38:28they're going to go out the restaurants. Yeah, talk about that. People
- 38:31just don't realize the Coal River Water Trail host eighteen thousand people a year regularly.
- 38:37The tour to Coal. We contact him, We're in contact with people
- 38:40from twenty four different states, and all of the major kayak groups outside of
- 38:45West Virginia are getting all of our information. We had over seventy thousand people
- 38:52receive our information last week on Facebook. So, I mean, when you
- 38:57see the paddlers coming in, you'll see paddles and license plates from all over.
- 39:00And like you say, it's a boom for Saint Albans, you know,
- 39:05and the surrounding areas not just Saint Albans. It's it's it's all over,
- 39:08it's all over. Keep in mind, the Co River groups are non
- 39:10profitable groups. We do all this on our own to raise money to keep
- 39:15cleaning the rivers. That's what we do, and put on education programs.
- 39:19But but it's a it's a fun party. The mayor and I came up
- 39:22with this years ago and I came up with the idea, let's let's paddle
- 39:27all day and dance all night, and you're going to do that. The
- 39:30schedule of entertainment that you have for both this evening and then pretty much all
- 39:34day tomorrow is awesome. I saw Bucky Covington. He used to be on
- 39:37American Idol. I was actually able to see him in Ashland several years ago,
- 39:40and he is so much fun. Of course, Davison Brothers band.
- 39:44We all love Davison Brothers. You guys do a great job. I feel
- 39:47like after a day of paddling, i'd be too tired to party, but
- 39:50you're proving me wrong, I think on this one. Well, you know,
- 39:53the whole deal is is that the city puts on the Yack Fist and
- 39:58the Co River Group puts on the tour to col and we're so excited about
- 40:00being able to bring that many as many people, but not just some people,
- 40:05but all their families and all their can and all their friends come in
- 40:10to see two thousand people float down the Cold River and end up at Saint
- 40:15Albans. And the weather is going to be great too. Oh yeah,
- 40:17what a cool sence to see two thousand kayakers going down the cold river.
- 40:22Believe me, it's Believe me. It's a national We're one of the most
- 40:24popular events in the nation. We are the largest kayaking event in the nation.
- 40:30And it's happening right here in the Canal Valta. That's the thing I
- 40:32like about it, right here in your backyard. You go out and check
- 40:36it out. All right, Bill, we gotta go. We run a
- 40:37little short on time. I appreciate you being here. You guys just do
- 40:40a fantastic job with tourticle getting all these people here, and of course say
- 40:44everybody in. It all ends up in Saint Alban's for a big party tomorrow
- 40:46night. Enjoy yourself and everybody be safe and have fun. We'll talk soon.
- 40:52And good luck to you man. Thank you for inviting. All right,
- 40:54So Bill Curry, I mean, is that cool stuff or what such
- 40:57cool stuff? I'll tell you what. We do a kayaking trap at the
- 41:00July and all I do is kind of float with a beverage in my hand.
- 41:02I feel like I need to go watch these like actual kayakers, see
- 41:06how it's actually done. I'm more of like a floater. You're float Yeah,
- 41:10Well it's I mean, and again the thing about this is when you
- 41:13talk Morgan, when you talk about this activity coming into Saint Albans, this
- 41:17is not just Saint Albans. I mean, these people are going to stay
- 41:21in hotels in Tay's Valley. They're going to stay in hotels in Charleston and
- 41:24South Charleston. And when people all the time I had textures to the shovel
- 41:28say why are they building hotels? This is why they're building hotels because you
- 41:31have all these people that are coming here, Like the soccer tournaments that come
- 41:36in. We have an influx of people coming in to enjoy the recreation right
- 41:38here in our backyard. And I'm so appreciative of it, and I know
- 41:42small business owners are appreciative of it. So if you see somebody from out
- 41:45of town this weekend, you give them that good old fashioned West Virginia charm
- 41:49and make sure they come back and visit us again. And can I just
- 41:52say, as somebody from southern West Virginia and I know you're from Kentucky,
- 41:55somebody when Bill Curry just said and their ken, how much I love that.
- 41:59When I haven't heard the word cannon a while, I appreciate that.

- 44:38Well, we hope not fun times though, Well, does everybody be
- 44:40safe That's why I said to Bill, Yes, everybody be safe. Morgan
- 44:45Robinson is here's my co host. Today covered a lot of ground today,
- 44:46we still got to get to ten questions. I want to get to know
- 44:50Morgan Robinson a little bit. When now you're currently the marketing director, Yes,
- 44:53of Mountain State Oral and Facial Surgery. More in that in a moment.
- 44:57But you've done a lot of notable things in your life and all scenario.
- 45:00I mean you've done radio, yes, so you've done this before,
- 45:04I've done this Clay Center. I mean you've got a lot of different things.
- 45:06Yeah, why can't you keep a job now, I'm kim kidding.
- 45:08I can't keep a job, man. I have too many interests. I
- 45:13think that's what I have, Like ADHD, I want to just help everybody
- 45:15out and learn more about all of the things. So yeah, I was
- 45:19at the Clay Center for eight years. Absolutely amazing. It's such a gym
- 45:22in our community and so many people get to experience such different aspects of it.
- 45:27The Discovery Museum, the Art Museum. I was there last night for
- 45:30Art after Dark where they're celebrating twenty years. This is twenty years that the
- 45:34Clay Center has been in the Charleston area, so they had an art exhibit
- 45:37up, but also the planetarium and the performance hall. Like I said,
- 45:39I saw Aristotle Jones opening for Haley Ryanhart there, so yeah, that was
- 45:44so much better. Now I'm at Mountain State learning all about oral health and
- 45:46healthcare. We've got twelve different locations in four states, so I've been able
- 45:52to travel a little bit, which is super cool, and just learn all
- 45:54about the amazing things that they're doing on a daily basis. I want to
- 45:58talk about your time in radio. You did radio across town in the station
- 46:01that shall will not be named. I'm kidding. They're competitors, but but
- 46:07we're we're we all know each other. But uh and and but I know
- 46:12coach kid, you know very well. We're one of two point seven in
- 46:15Wade Hill, very good friends of mine. Can't stand either one of them.
- 46:20But m and the people, and I'll fill a minute. The people
- 46:22were rock Queta five in the mix. I used to work there. They're
- 46:24all great people as well. Um, but how did you get into radio
- 46:28when you did it? I mean, how did that happen? So that
- 46:30is actually kind of an interesting story. So I was working at the Girl
- 46:32Scouts at the time doing their communication. I was slinging cookies if you will,
- 46:36That's what I was like to say, now, just kidding um.
- 46:38And I had a blog called Charming Charleston. So when I moved to Charleston
- 46:44in twenty ten, I didn't know a single soul aside from my husband and
- 46:47where you from. Originally I'm from Ashley, Kentucky, originally by way of
- 46:51Columbus in Atlanta, but my husband moved me here in twenty ten. So
- 46:53I've been here for about thirteen years now, but I didn't know anybody,
- 46:57and I wanted to get out into the Charleston community. I saw these amazing
- 47:00events, the great live music live on the web. He was one of
- 47:02the first things that I did when I came here, and I said,
- 47:05you know, how do people learn about these things? And so back in
- 47:07you know, twenty ten, blogging was still a big thing. This is
- 47:12before all the big YouTube and podcasts and stuff like that. So I started
- 47:15a blog called Charming Charleston dot com, and I would talk about activities in
- 47:20Charleston, small businesses, highlighting and so they invited me to come on on
- 47:23Friday mornings at seven o'clock at eight o'clock and talk about what's going on this
- 47:27weekend. So it was just like a weekend wind up where we talked about
- 47:30activities and the timing ended up just right that one of the co hosts was
- 47:35leaving. Coach and I had an amazing relationship. He's still my favorite person
- 47:38have coffee with in the morning, no offense day. Well, well nine
- 47:42o'clock you should have already had your coffee taken care of. Exactly. My
- 47:45coffee consumption was at an all time high at five am with Coach. So
- 47:47yeah, so it just we had a great report and a great relationship,
- 47:52and there we go. I ended up with a full time job and now
- 47:54and now you're you went to the Clay Center and now you're working with the
- 47:59folks of Mountains State some good stuff. You're ready to play ten questions?
- 48:00Oh? Totally at random? Would do this from my different co host every
- 48:05wee totally random questions that I just grabbed from here and there. Do you
- 48:08have no idea what I'm going to ask them? Ask them rapid fire if
- 48:12you need to skip a question and go back to it. Are you ready
- 48:14to play ten questions? Because we got to kind of make this quick.
- 48:15All right? All right, here we go. We pull up beside you,
- 48:20and you have the windows rolled up and you're just singing along in your
- 48:22car to the music. If it's got you singing that loudly and having that
- 48:27much fun, what artists are you likely listening to right now? Leon Bridges?
- 48:30All right? First name only your best friend in elementary school, Tony
- 48:34Dawn. Sorry, that is her first name. You're from Kentucky, So
- 48:38there you go. Uh, we open the middle console in your car right
- 48:44now? What's on top or what do we find first? And please don't
- 48:46say vodka bottle? Oh well, my second answer is now antibacterial wipes.
- 48:52All right. You're at a salad bar. Name something guaranteed to be on
- 48:58your salad other than dressing or lattice, olives? Olives? Okay? A
- 49:01celebrity that you really can't stand. Oh gosh, oh I don't know.
- 49:07Um, probably the Kardashians. Okay, as a whole, I'm sorry.
- 49:12I respect the hustle, but all the name of the street you grew up
- 49:15on, Happy Ridge, I'm the most Kentucky Kentucky. That's not a street,
- 49:21that's an institution. It is, all right, you're flipping through the
- 49:24channels at home, and when this movie comes on, you have to stop
- 49:28and watch it every time. American Pie, I'm an enigma. Yes,
- 49:38football, baseball, basketball or hockey sports balls. Oh we'll go baseball.
- 49:45The pants are just chef's kiss. I have no idea what you just said.
- 49:51But okay, Jeff, can you translate that from me? I don't
- 49:54ask questions. Don't ask questions, somebody out all right? The one subject
- 49:59in school or college that gives still gives you nightmares? Science chemistry? Okay,
- 50:05all right, fast, last one. You've done well, kid,
- 50:07Last one. I tend to be more hot or more cold hot. There
- 50:13you go, There you go, there you go. Yeah, I'm always
- 50:15trying to crank the acapp I'm exactly the opposite of every stereotypical woman. All
- 50:20right, well, there you go. You've completed ten questions. Congratulations.

- 50:35All right, as somebody you know who, as I said, pretty
- 50:37well known, and Charles, you seemed to be involved in a little of
- 50:39everything. What makes you want to get involved in so much? I love
- 50:45seeing the excitement that people have for the events that they're putting on. Just
- 50:49like talking to Bill about the Act Fast, I know firsthand what goes into
- 50:52event planning or what goes in to make any event great. So I love
- 50:55to see when an event comes together it does such an amazing job with an
- 51:00impact. I mean, it's it's really cool, and I love to see
- 51:02people. I think I thrive off of other people's energy, so my social
- 51:07battery gets refilled when I'm around a lot of people and talking with them,
- 51:09And it's just beautiful to see when something all comes together. It's benefiting the
- 51:14community, it's benefiting a cause, and people are having a great time all
- 51:16doing it. Just like the Mayor's concert last night down with Slack Paza,
- 51:20it was just awesome to see all of this talent, all of the people
- 51:22enjoying it, everyone sort of united, just enjoying our sweet little hometown.
- 51:27So what's up next for you? What's keeping you busy other than other things
- 51:30you just mentioned? What projects are you working on that because you always got
- 51:32a project outside your job. What are you working about? I always have
- 51:35a project outside outside the job. So I got some secret things in the
- 51:38works that I'll have to come on again in a few weeks to talk about.
- 51:42But what's keeping you busy is enjoying my kiddos. I have twins that
- 51:45just finished their freshman year at WVU, so we've got them home. This
- 51:47is their last summer home with us before they move into apartments. So we're
- 51:52just trying to soak up all of the fun with them. And the pants
- 51:54too, and the rat pack. Yeah, don't let them. Yeah know
- 51:57that I didn't mention. Five. Andy Live was brought to part by your
- 52:00hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. Birds have been on the road
- 52:02all this week. They return home on the twentieth. For tickets, promotion
- 52:06schedules, and more, visit dirty Birds baseball dot com. All right,
- 52:07I gotta go, Morgan, it's been fun. It's been so much fun.
- 52:10What a great way to kick off the weekend. You need to be
- 52:13back on the radio. More. Thank you, Shoot you to another station
- 52:15next time we get you on with one of the other guests. All right,
