- 0:00So we've been talking about, from the book of
- 0:03Hebrews, and I've been telling you that I'm going
- 0:05to be preaching this word. And I really wanted
- 0:08to set it up, though, because the verses leading
- 0:11up to the middle of Hebrews 12 are all verses
- 0:15that should encourage you and cause you to, with
- 0:19anticipation and joy, receive what the middle
- 0:23of Hebrews 12 says. And so the previous sermons,
- 0:27we've been talking about running our race and
- 0:31how God wants us to do well in our race, and
- 0:34he's setting us up to run it well. Last week
- 0:38we talked about thriving, right? Being a green
- 0:41leaf and thriving. All of that is to set us up
- 0:45for Hebrews 12. And one of my favorite verses
- 0:49is in Isaiah 48, 17. And it simply says, the
- 0:53Lord teaches you to profit. The Lord teaches
- 0:58you to profit. Now that's not just about profit
- 1:03financially. This is about profiting in my spiritual
- 1:06life, in my emotions, in my family. It's profit
- 1:11in all areas. Do I figure that out on my own?
- 1:15No. The Lord teaches me to do that. And so our
- 1:21text is out of Romans chapter 12. And we've just
- 1:26finished. Talking about running our race, and
- 1:30we finished with, here's how you run the race
- 1:33well. You consider him who endured, right? You
- 1:37look to Jesus who endured. And so directly following
- 1:42that verse, in verse 5, it says, and have you
- 1:47completely forgotten this word of encouragement
- 1:51that addresses you as a father addresses his
- 1:55son? It says, my son, do not make light of the
- 2:01Lord's discipline and do not lose heart when
- 2:05he rebukes you because the Lord disciplines the
- 2:10one he loves and he chastens everyone he accepts
- 2:15as his son. Endure hardship as discipline. God
- 2:21is treating you as children. For what children
- 2:27are not disciplined by their father? If you are
- 2:32not disciplined, and everyone undergoes discipline,
- 2:35then you are not legitimate. You are not true
- 2:39sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have
- 2:43all had human fathers who disciplined us, and
- 2:47we respected them for it. How much more should
- 2:51we submit to the father of spirits and live?
- 2:55They disciplined us for a little while as they
- 2:58thought best. But God disciplines us for our
- 3:02good, in order that we may share in his holiness.
- 3:10No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but
- 3:14painful. Later on, however, It produces a harvest
- 3:19of righteousness and peace for those who have
- 3:24been trained by it. Now, this passage is coming
- 3:30from a time in a culture where they assume that
- 3:33there are fathers and mothers that are training
- 3:35up their children, right? And we know, I was
- 3:39blessed to have that, and I'm thankful for the
- 3:41discipline of my parents and my grandmother.
- 3:47But not everybody has had that kind of a relationship
- 3:50with a father or a mother where they have been
- 3:53trained and disciplined. Or if they have, it's
- 3:56been on the extreme side of abusiveness that
- 3:59is not discipline and is not training. That is
- 4:03the fruit of temper, anger, and perverseness.
- 4:10And so for some of us, this is going to be hard
- 4:13to truly get what it looks like for a father
- 4:16to truly discipline. You've never experienced
- 4:19it. You just don't really have much clue what
- 4:22that looks like. This is why it says the Lord
- 4:26teaches us. What I don't want is for those of
- 4:30you that experienced that to feel like, well,
- 4:33that's not for me because I've not ever experienced
- 4:36that. No, you have a perfect father that will
- 4:41teach you, if you are open to it, what that looks
- 4:44like. And will, in the process, heal woundedness
- 4:48from that. He's fully able to do that. And so
- 4:53I just want to say that as we're looking at that,
- 4:55looking forward into this sermon, there's that
- 4:58understanding that for some of you, this might
- 5:01be a whole new concept you need the Lord to teach
- 5:03you and what it looks like for a father to discipline
- 5:06and to train. And so this morning, we're going
- 5:10to start with a story from a man after God's
- 5:14own heart, King David. And this is following
- 5:18King David's affair. and subsequent murder of
- 5:25another person, not himself, right? So it starts
- 5:29in the story of King David not being where he
- 5:33should be in the spring. All of the other kings
- 5:36were out fighting in battle, and he was still
- 5:38at home. He was lounging at home when he should
- 5:43have been out to war. So to begin with, he wasn't
- 5:47where he should have been. And so his gaze found
- 5:51Bathsheba bathing on the housetop. And he desired
- 5:56her. And so he took her. I'm the king. I can
- 6:02take whoever or whatever I want. And so she became
- 6:06pregnant. Well, now his sin is going to find
- 6:10him out because her husband was where he should
- 6:14have been. He was out fighting on behalf of King
- 6:17David. And so while Bathsheba's wife is fighting
- 6:22for King David, King David had an affair with
- 6:25his wife. So now she's pregnant, and David has
- 6:30to cover his sin. And he does that through having,
- 6:36through a set of circumstances, her husband killed
- 6:39in battle. And so this is where we find King
- 6:44David. Now, I also want to say this about discipline
- 6:48and correction of the Lord. For King David, this
- 6:53is the result of his sin. Not every discipline
- 6:58and correction is because you have some big sin
- 7:00in your life. Sometimes God is just wanting to
- 7:04train you. He's wanting to prepare you. He's
- 7:07wanting you to learn the ways of the kingdom.
- 7:10In fact, in Proverbs 30, it says there are some
- 7:14things that the earth can't tolerate. The earth
- 7:18can't abide. And that is a servant that becomes
- 7:22a king. Well, why is that? Because servants don't
- 7:27have the mentality, the paradigm of what it is
- 7:32to be royalty. And so there's no way they can
- 7:36occupy the role of a king. They only know what
- 7:39it is to be a servant, to have a servant mentality.
- 7:44And so it says the earth can't abide that. Well,
- 7:47think about what we've all come out of in our
- 7:49sin, in our past, in all of our willfulness before
- 7:54we met Jesus. And now it says we have Abba Father.
- 7:59Now we are stepping into the place of royalty.
- 8:03I think there's some things we need to learn
- 8:06about the kingdom, right? And so when we're talking
- 8:09about correction and discipline, it's not about
- 8:12just punishment. It is about consequences for
- 8:17sure, but it's also about training us in the
- 8:20ways of God's kingdom. And although David here
- 8:24is going to learn that there were consequences
- 8:26to his sin, really what this is about is that
- 8:30he was not doing his life kingdom -minded. And
- 8:36so it wasn't just a consequence, but God's trying
- 8:38to teach him, David, here's what you need to
- 8:41be to be a king of Israel. And so David has done
- 8:46all of this, and in 2 Samuel 12, the Lord sends
- 8:51to David a prophet who is a trusted friend of
- 8:54David's, and his name is Nathan. And so when
- 8:59Nathan comes to David, he says, he tells a parable,
- 9:03kind of like Jesus. And I know all of you that
- 9:07have watched VeggieTales are thinking of the
- 9:11king's duck, right? I know what you're all thinking.
- 9:16There were two men in a certain town, one rich
- 9:20and the other poor. The rich man had a very large
- 9:24number of sheep and cattle. But the poor man
- 9:29had nothing but one little ewe. He raised it,
- 9:34and it grew up with him and his children. It
- 9:38shared his food, it drank from his cup, and it
- 9:41even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter
- 9:44to him. Now a traveler came to the rich man,
- 9:49but the rich man refrained from taking one of
- 9:52his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for
- 9:56the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he
- 10:01went to his neighbor, he took the ewe lamb that
- 10:04belonged to the poor man and prepared it for
- 10:07the one who had come to him. Oh, it says in verse
- 10:135 that David burned with anger against the man
- 10:18and said to Nathan, as surely as the Lord lives,
- 10:23the man who did this must die. He must pay for
- 10:28that lamb four times over because he did such
- 10:31a thing and had no pity. Oh, then comes the kicker.
- 10:37Nathan looks at David and says, David, you are
- 10:43that man. You are that man. And then there follows
- 10:52God's rebuke to David. over what he had done
- 10:55with Bathsheba and her husband. And so I want
- 11:00us, there's just a couple of takeaways today
- 11:03that I want us to look at to help us, because
- 11:05this is a gift. The correction, the discipline,
- 11:09the rebuke of the Lord is a gift to you. It means
- 11:14that he considers you. He's not pushing you away
- 11:18from him. What he's doing is trying to bring
- 11:21you closer to him. It means you're his daughter.
- 11:25It means you're his son. And he's trying to draw
- 11:29you closer into him. That's what the discipline
- 11:33and correction means. And so the first thing
- 11:37in our ability to endure and undergo that kind
- 11:42of rebuke and discipline and correction is that
- 11:45we first have to understand the heart of God
- 11:48in it. Okay? We have to understand the heart
- 11:52of God. And you guys, you hear me read this passage
- 11:55over and over. And I want us to go to it today.
- 11:58I started us out with it. But in Isaiah 48, this
- 12:02is another life passage for me. I should just
- 12:05write them all down. I don't know. I have so
- 12:07many of them that have truly been such foundational
- 12:10transformative verses. And this is one of them.
- 12:15And so it starts out in verse 13. This is what
- 12:20the Lord said. Now, he wrote this after addressing
- 12:24Israel as being strong -willed. They were exerting
- 12:28their own will. And so this is what God says
- 12:32to them in the face of that. I am the Lord your
- 12:37God who teaches you what is best for you. What
- 12:42I read earlier was a different version, who teaches
- 12:45you to profit. I think this is the NIV, it says
- 12:51he teaches what is best for you. And we often
- 12:54think we know what's best, right? Who directs
- 12:59you in the way you should go. If only you had
- 13:04paid attention to my commands, your peace would
- 13:08have been like a river. Your well -being like
- 13:12the waves of the sea. Your descendants would
- 13:16have been like the sand. Your children, like
- 13:19its numberless grains, their name would never
- 13:21be blotted out nor destroyed from me. This is
- 13:25such a powerful passage, and there's a couple
- 13:28of takeaways from it that I want us to get. And
- 13:31the first one is that he wants your best. And
- 13:36some of us, that's hard to really believe. Because
- 13:39nobody in life has wanted my best. And so now
- 13:43I believe I don't deserve best. But can I say
- 13:46to you, he is wanting to teach you what is best.
- 13:50He wants your best for you. He wants you to profit.
- 13:56He desires you to profit. He desires to establish
- 14:02a way of life that is peaceful. He desires a
- 14:09life for you that is one of well -being. He desires
- 14:14this to be a family legacy. Some of you, the
- 14:20legacy you inherited was not one of peace, was
- 14:24not one of well -being. He wants to establish
- 14:28a new family legacy through you. That's his best
- 14:33for you. That's why he gives his correction and
- 14:36his discipline. He's establishing a new family
- 14:40legacy. And so this means that his goal for you
- 14:44is not your creature comforts, how you're feeling
- 14:48and how comfortable you are right now. That's
- 14:51not his goal for you. His goal is a transformational,
- 14:57transforming legacy. to pass on to the generations.
- 15:04We cannot be short -sighted in this. He's creating
- 15:09a legacy that is ongoing and eternal beyond you
- 15:16being comfortable today. And that's hard because
- 15:21we like being comfortable. We don't like things
- 15:24like fasting. Because we get uncomfortable. But
- 15:29fasting is a way of training ourselves in righteousness.
- 15:36Now, once we trust that he wants what is best
- 15:42for us, we can then trust his direction. It's
- 15:47hard to trust his directing in your life if you
- 15:50don't trust his heart that he wants what is best
- 15:54for you. And so I actually asked, Gage and Kenzie
- 16:00aren't here today, and I asked her last night
- 16:02if I could share this testimony. What some of
- 16:06you older ones don't maybe know, because when
- 16:09you got married 50, 40 years ago, we had a different
- 16:12culture and society. But for our young adults,
- 16:18our younger families, getting married and not
- 16:23just living together, is a real sacrifice. It
- 16:29is very, our society and our government has not
- 16:33made it easy for our young people to get married.
- 16:36It costs them a lot of money when most of them
- 16:40don't have a lot of it to begin with. And so
- 16:44for them to take that step of obedience, I remember
- 16:46when Destiny and Les did that, they immediately
- 16:50lost money in child care. Thousands. So I've
- 16:58been going through marriage counseling with Gage
- 17:00and Kenzie. They're getting married in May. And
- 17:03if you don't know this yet, Kenzie has begun
- 17:08this semester with nursing school. And so in
- 17:12our discussion has arisen, well, if we can have
- 17:16just a ceremony and file the legal paperwork
- 17:20later, save her thousands of dollars with her
- 17:27FAFSA. And so Darren and I had the conversation
- 17:31with them just a couple weeks ago saying, there
- 17:35is this point in the process where we begin to
- 17:39trust the blessing of the Lord over the aid of
- 17:44the government, right? Now we can all agree,
- 17:49but that's a hard step to take because you will
- 17:52feel it. So they were, okay, we're going to do
- 17:58it legally. They'd made that decision, we're
- 18:00going to do it legally. Well, Darren had made
- 18:04that statement about trusting the blessing more,
- 18:06and so she messaged me Thursday, and she said,
- 18:10I had to share this with you. Ever since our
- 18:13meeting, I've been repeating that to myself every
- 18:15day about trusting the blessing. She said, I
- 18:19got a phone call today that... Through certain
- 18:24funding, not her FAFSA, but from funding from
- 18:28elsewhere, all of her schooling, all of her schooling
- 18:33has been covered. All of it. I read it and I
- 18:43laughed, didn't I? I laughed. What did they do?
- 18:48They decided to trust. That God wanted their
- 18:52best. And so they aligned their life to that.
- 18:57And God came through. God came through. Praise
- 19:03the Lord. So when we begin, what is she doing?
- 19:07What is her engaged doing now in that moment?
- 19:10They are beginning to build their story of God's
- 19:14faithfulness to them. Right? That's now become
- 19:18a foundation to build their family on when God
- 19:22reveals his faithfulness to them in that way.
- 19:25And so now the next time they feel a direction
- 19:28of the Lord, what are they going to do? They're
- 19:31going to be a little more likely, aren't they,
- 19:33to come into alignment with God's direction.
- 19:37Now they can trust the heart of God for them.
- 19:41And so they will now. much easier follow in the
- 19:45direction that he wants them to go. And so that's
- 19:49our second point there is that now we're trusting
- 19:52his direction. So I learned something in small
- 19:55group on Wednesday night that aircrafts, if they
- 20:03by one degree, there's a rule, a rule that is
- 20:07called the one in 60 rule. Okay, everybody say
- 20:11one in 60 rule. A one degree, often stated as
- 20:17a 1%, course deviation. So just one degree, 1
- 20:24% of a course deviation results to being one
- 20:32nautical mile off track for every 60 nautical
- 20:37miles traveled. Okay, so you say, what does that
- 20:41mean? You boil that down to this. A one degree
- 20:47error on a flight from Los Angeles to Rome will
- 20:54land you in Africa. A one degree, a 1 % off from
- 21:04Los Angeles to Rome will land you in Africa.
- 21:10And see, sometimes we're just, Lord, we're just
- 21:14a little bit. I'm not hugely walking in a direction
- 21:17foreign to God, but there's this one area that
- 21:20I really want my will to be done. And it won't
- 21:24hurt anything. It's just 1%. It's just one degree.
- 21:28For the most part, I'm still going in his direction
- 21:32that he wants me to go. I'm still doing it his
- 21:35way. Listen, that 1 % is all that stinking devil
- 21:40needs, and we will find ourself in a place we
- 21:44never thought we would be, out in Africa. We
- 21:52think it's not much. This is why we sing what
- 21:56we do this morning. We're going to be completely
- 21:58consumed. We give it all. We don't hold anything
- 22:01back. Because it doesn't take much for us to
- 22:06begin to veer off track. In our passage in Hebrews
- 22:1412, it said, how much more then should we submit
- 22:19to the Father of spirits and live? They disciplined
- 22:22us for a little while as they thought best. But
- 22:26God disciplines us for our good that we may share
- 22:29in holiness. And so once you trust, he wants
- 22:34your best. You can trust his direction. And once
- 22:39you trust his direction, now you are truly open
- 22:42to correction. Now you have a teachable spirit.
- 22:49Have you ever tried to teach somebody that doesn't
- 22:52have a teachable spirit? Oh, she's here. I'm
- 22:54going to use her as an example. Chris Northrup
- 22:57down here. I tell this story a lot, Chris. Steve
- 23:02and Chris are from our church in Galesburg. And
- 23:06I have said, I can teach anybody to knit. Anybody.
- 23:10I have taught so many people to knit. I can teach
- 23:13anybody to knit. And then I would try to teach
- 23:16Chris. And I will tell you, she's been the only
- 23:20person I have failed to teach to knit. And do
- 23:23you know why? I don't know if you remember this,
- 23:26Chris. The whole time she kept saying, I just
- 23:29can't do this. I just can't do this. The whole
- 23:31time she was repeating, I just can't do this.
- 23:34Finally, I was like, no, you can't. Do you know
- 23:37why? Because she was... She was determined. She
- 23:40couldn't do this. Listen, there are things in
- 23:44your life that you think because of your past,
- 23:46because of your family, because of this or what
- 23:48you've done or before Jesus, the things that
- 23:51you did, that you can't do what God wants you
- 23:55to do. You can't live in accordance with his
- 23:57ways. And I'll tell you, it's just not true.
- 24:00If you will be open, we're going to have to have
- 24:03another knitting lesson, Chris. I'm determined
- 24:05now. We're going to change the narrative that
- 24:08you declare while we're doing that. Once you,
- 24:12it is that open, teachable spirit that is what
- 24:17gives you the ability to be empowered by and
- 24:20guided by the direction of God. It's being teachable.
- 24:27And so the correction of God that we find. Here
- 24:32in verse 7 of 2 Samuel, Nathan had said to David,
- 24:37remember, you are that man. And God began to
- 24:40then do what? Rebuke him. He began to, in fact,
- 24:44down in verse 12, God said to him, you did it
- 24:48in secret, your sin. This is why I'm always on
- 24:52about making the secret place beautiful. Because
- 24:56you win it in the secret place. You did it in
- 25:01secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight
- 25:05before all of Israel. He was going to rebuke
- 25:09and correct David. I love, though, David's immediate
- 25:14response. Because, see, David messed up a lot,
- 25:20but David did have a heart for God, and he was
- 25:22teachable, and he said, I have sinned against
- 25:26the Lord. And what you need to hear and be encouraged
- 25:31by is Nathan's response. Immediately, he says,
- 25:35the Lord has taken away your sin. You are not
- 25:40going to die. Immediately, the mercy of the Lord
- 25:44was showered down upon David on his confession.
- 25:50Now he said, but because by doing this you have
- 25:53shown utter contempt for the Lord, the son born
- 25:57to you out of this sin will die. Now a couple
- 26:02of things in that. First of all, we said it,
- 26:05the secret place matters. The second thing we
- 26:10see here, and this might feel harsh to you, is
- 26:12that God was going to expose it in public. And
- 26:16there's just a couple of things I want us to
- 26:18be mindful in this verse. First of all, David
- 26:21was a king. And when you are king, you have greater
- 26:28responsibility. You live in public. And so he
- 26:34was going to be exposed in public. I feel that
- 26:38as I minister the word publicly. I am going to
- 26:42have a greater accountability for what I say
- 26:45and how I live because I have a public place
- 26:49here doing that. And so we need to take that
- 26:54in mind, that David was in that public office
- 26:57of being king. We see that across the board with
- 27:01the ministers that have been taken out of ministry
- 27:04in the last year across the nation. And it happens
- 27:08very publicly. Why? Because they are... people
- 27:11in the public face, right? And so they can't
- 27:15just repent and it all just be okay. No, they
- 27:18had to be removed from that place. So we take
- 27:22that into consideration. The other thing that
- 27:24I find fascinating in this is that David's life
- 27:28has always been a foreshadow of the Messiah.
- 27:32How he did worship, how he led, even his heart
- 27:36of worship. He had revelation in the old covenant
- 27:39that nobody else had of what the new covenant
- 27:43was going to be. So David is always, his life,
- 27:46his kingdom, his reign has been a foreshadow,
- 27:48right? Jesus came from the lineage of David.
- 27:53And I think that this is a beautiful foreshadow
- 27:56that all of our sin in the secret places, Jesus.
- 28:02publicly took on the cross. All of our sin and
- 28:07shame was exposed there on the cross. He didn't
- 28:11do it in the secret room in the back, take our
- 28:13sin. No, he did it on the cross in front of everybody.
- 28:20Now, having said all of that, I believe in the
- 28:23kindness of our Father, of God. And I believe
- 28:27that, like any good parent, that he brings us
- 28:30along in the easiest way that we will come. And
- 28:35some of us are very quick to respond when he
- 28:38brings that correction. Yes, Lord, I have sinned.
- 28:42And it's dealt with. Some of us have to learn
- 28:45our lessons a little bit harder. Some of us are
- 28:49a little more teachable than others. And so it's
- 28:53however we learn to respond to the Father. I
- 28:57believe he is not a God of humiliation, that
- 29:00he is not trying to deal with your stuff in front
- 29:02of everybody. It's the beauty of the secret place.
- 29:07And so just as in raising my four kids, they
- 29:11got a lot of correction, right? I did not correct
- 29:16them in front of other people. I was not wanting
- 29:20to humiliate my children in front of other people.
- 29:25That was the place of the secret place of their
- 29:28home. And I believe that's the heart of our Father.
- 29:32He's always, he's not the God of humiliation.
- 29:36Jesus took that humiliation. And so this is part
- 29:40of the ability to trust his correction and guidance.
- 29:44That he's always trying to cover you. He's always
- 29:47trying to do it in the easiest way possible.
- 29:50And he's always trying to do it in a place where
- 29:53you will feel safe and secure in receiving it.
- 29:57Amen? And so I just feel like we need to say
- 30:02that. That if we think that, oh, he's going to
- 30:06be like he was with David in front of everybody,
- 30:08expose my stuff. That's not the heart of our
- 30:11Father. Okay, and so it does say though in Hebrews
- 30:1512, and I want to throw this in again because
- 30:17we're not just talking about sin. We're using
- 30:20that example of King David, but it said in verse
- 30:247 to endure hardship as discipline. God is treating
- 30:29you as children. And so your hardship, am I saying
- 30:33your hardship is a result of sin? I am not. I'm
- 30:36saying that hardship, if we will trust that he
- 30:39will use all things for our good, I'm saying
- 30:43hardship will train us for what is to come. Hardship
- 30:48will teach us what it is to not live as a servant,
- 30:51but to live as a son and a daughter of a most
- 30:54high God. When I am in the places of hardship,
- 30:57I will tell you, I understand that we said it
- 31:02last week, an enemy that is out to steal, kill,
- 31:04and destroy you. And when I'm talking to the
- 31:07enemy, I'm always rebuking and resisting. But
- 31:10when I'm turned toward the Father, I am embracing
- 31:13the hardship as the way that the Lord is teaching
- 31:18me and training me, disciplining me. Because
- 31:24in Hebrews 12, 11, later on in that passage,
- 31:27it says that later, once you have endured, later.
- 31:33And if you remember, we used that word endure
- 31:36when we talked about running our races, didn't
- 31:39we? That was a key word we saw, endure, endure,
- 31:43endure. It's the theme word for those Hebrews
- 31:4710 through 12, endure, endure, endure. When we
- 31:53endure, we will see then the harvest of righteousness
- 31:57and peace is a promise for us. And so we go through
- 32:03all that hard stuff, and it's not fun. Did any
- 32:08of us as kids enjoy being disciplined? No, we
- 32:13didn't. You're like, yeah, I'm getting a spanking
- 32:16today. No, we didn't. And I've always been such
- 32:25a one that wants to receive affirmation from
- 32:27my leadership because I want to please them.
- 32:30Even to think that, oh man, they're upset with
- 32:33me. It's hard. It's hard. We have to endure it.
- 32:39But let's just walk through the aftermath, can
- 32:42we? Once we have endured it, let's look at the
- 32:45beauty of the aftermath. Once David had gone
- 32:50through the rebuke of the Lord, And his child
- 32:54had died. Here's what it says in verse 20. Then
- 32:58David got up from the ground, because he had
- 33:03been in a place of grief, a heap of ashes, praying
- 33:07for his son. After he got up from the ground,
- 33:14After he had washed, put on lotions, and changed
- 33:18his clothes. What was he doing? He's saying,
- 33:21that isn't my identity anymore. I'm not in the
- 33:25place of grieving and mourning anymore. It says
- 33:30he went into the house of the Lord and worshipped.
- 33:35He went into the house of the Lord and worshipped.
- 33:38Then he went to his own house, and at his request
- 33:42they served him food, and he ate. What David
- 33:46didn't do in the face of all of the direction
- 33:50of the Lord, all of that, he did not wallow in
- 33:55shame. He did not wallow in regret. He did not
- 33:59wallow in sorrow. He began to worship. He began
- 34:04to worship. I think he learned his lesson well,
- 34:09didn't he, in that moment. And so in Hebrews
- 34:1512, verse 12, at the end of our passage there
- 34:20on the correction of the Lord, it says, Therefore,
- 34:27now that you have endured the correction, now
- 34:30that you've endured the hardship, therefore,
- 34:32strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. He's
- 34:37acknowledging that at the end, you're not going
- 34:41to feel all strong and glorious and ready to
- 34:44go forward in victory. No, you're going to feel
- 34:46weak. You're going to feel all of that lack of
- 34:51strength. And we think there's something wrong
- 34:54with our season because we feel weak, because
- 34:57we don't feel victorious. Can I just say, just
- 35:00maybe God is wanting to do a work of correction
- 35:03and training. And at the end of it, you will
- 35:07strengthen. your feeble arms and weak knees.
- 35:11You will make level paths for your feet so that
- 35:15the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.
- 35:20He is not wanting you to go forever disabled.
- 35:24If you're going from that place of correction
- 35:28disabled, then you're missing something in the
- 35:32process. You're missing the healing. Because
- 35:37he always heals and restores. He always heals
- 35:42and restores. And so I'm going to ask if the
- 35:47worship team would come up. There was a time
- 35:52frame when David first had committed his adultery
- 36:01and murder. Nathan didn't come to David until
- 36:09the baby had, she had gone through nine months
- 36:13of pregnancy. So David had gone through a long
- 36:17season of thinking he's doing okay. And when
- 36:29it says that He got up and he changed his clothes
- 36:33and he went into the house of the Lord to worship.
- 36:38Do you know what I think that he wrote? Do you
- 36:41know what song I think he wrote when he went
- 36:44and worshiped? I think that's where we had Psalm
- 36:4951 come out of. I think that's where, I think
- 36:55it was in that moment. Where he had gotten up
- 36:58and he had gone into the house to worship. I
- 37:00think that's when he wrote Psalm 51. And we're
- 37:08not going to read all of Psalm 51. But I do want
- 37:10to read probably the passage we are most familiar
- 37:13with. And this would be a great one for you just
- 37:18to meditate on this week. Because when he's writing
- 37:22Psalm 51, he's talking about even emotionally.
- 37:27His nine -month season where he doesn't, because
- 37:32when it says, it says, restore to me the joy
- 37:34of my salvation. Well, what does that say to
- 37:38me? During that season, he didn't have the joy
- 37:40of salvation, right? And so I think it was a
- 37:44quiet season. I think it was a season where he
- 37:47didn't feel connected to God. I think it was
- 37:50a season where probably his worship songs were
- 37:54not flowing out of him. I have a feeling Psalm
- 37:5751 may have been one of the first he had written
- 38:00in a long time. But he writes in Psalm 51 in
- 38:07this prayer of repentance. Purge me with hyssop
- 38:12and I shall be clean. Wash me and I shall be
- 38:18whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness.
- 38:23That the bones you have broken may rejoice. That's
- 38:28the heart of the shepherd. That sometimes disables
- 38:31sheep because they will not stay with the shepherd.
- 38:35And it's an act of mercy and kindness. That the
- 38:39bones you have broken may rejoice. Hide your
- 38:43face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities.
- 38:47Create in me a clean heart, O God. And renew
- 38:51a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me
- 38:57away from your presence. And do not take your
- 39:02Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of
- 39:09your salvation. And uphold me by your generous
- 39:14spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your
- 39:19ways. and sinners shall be converted to you.
- 39:25I think he wrote this when he went to the house
- 39:29to worship. And he's being restored. What is
- 39:34he doing? He's making the path straight for his
- 39:36feet. He's saying, I'm not going to continue
- 39:39on as king, disabled and broken. I'm going to
- 39:45receive the joy of salvation again. I'm going
- 39:49to be upheld by the generosity of the Spirit
- 39:52of the living God. And some of you today, we're
- 39:57all in different places. And listen, we're all
- 39:59going to experience, because we're all sons and
- 40:03daughters, the correction and discipline of the
- 40:05Lord. And there's just something in us being
- 40:09willing to embrace it. Can I just say, the more
- 40:15we embrace and the more we... are teachable the
- 40:19quicker quicker we get through our lessons right
- 40:23and so this morning we're going to take a moment
- 40:28as the team leads us in worship and we're just
- 40:30going to make this a place of altar you can in
- 40:35your seat or if you need to come to the altar
- 40:39itself but can we just have a few moments where
- 40:44we Come to God as our Father and say, Lord, maybe
- 40:50you're not in that teachable place right now.
- 40:53Maybe God's not doing that work in you now. I
- 40:56guarantee you he will be because he's continually
- 40:58wanting us to learn and to grow from glory to
- 41:01glory to glory. And there's a process. And so
- 41:06this morning I want us to just take a moment
- 41:08before we leave to just say, yes, Lord. We sang
- 41:12it today. When we sing things like, I want to
- 41:18be tried by fire. It really feels like a fire.
- 41:26He's not going to refine us while we're sitting
- 41:30back eating chocolates and enjoying life. It
- 41:36really feels like a fire. It really is painful.
- 41:41It really is uncomfortable. And so we can sing,
- 41:47oh, that's such a great song. I love to sing
- 41:49that song. But as soon as he puts a fire under
- 41:53us to reveal what's in us, like, oh, wait a minute,
- 41:57where's the bucket of water? Holy Spirit, rain
- 42:00down on me. I'd rather have the rain than the
- 42:04fire. Can we just today, before we leave, take
- 42:09a moment to embrace, Lord, we sang it. We sang,
- 42:12I want to be tried by fire. But right now I'm
- 42:17feeling the fire and I've been resisting. But
- 42:20would you teach me your ways? Would you teach
- 42:23me your direction? I open up my difficult places.
- 42:28I open up the hardships. I open up my places
- 42:31of grief and difficulty. I open up the season
- 42:35where I can't really hear you. And I just invite
- 42:38you in as my father to do in me what needs to
- 42:41be done. Can we just take a moment to do that?
- 42:45And so I want to just invite you to stand. And
- 42:48the team is going to lead us. And you are welcome
- 42:52to make where you're standing an altar. You're
- 42:54welcome to come down to the front. Sometimes
- 42:57we need to get away, even from our family members,
- 42:59just to have one -on -one with God. But let's
- 43:02make space for a few moments to just embrace
- 43:06the work that the Father wants to do in us.
