- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode one oh six of
- 0:19Speaker 1: Cards and Categories. I'm Mike cool I from Rasball, joined
- 0:23Speaker 1: us always by my very good friend Jeremy Burr, also
- 0:26Speaker 1: from Rasball. How are you doing tonight, buddy.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I am doing well. Happy to be here. It's the
- 0:32Speaker 2: season's starting to wind down about you, and then it
- 0:34Speaker 2: feels like the news cycles slowing a little bit, so
- 0:36Speaker 2: that's not as exciting, but it's okay. Still got a
- 0:39Speaker 2: great episode ahead of this, so I'm I'm excited. I'm
- 0:41Speaker 2: ready to go.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Yeah. We are recording this on Thursday, September fourth, so
- 0:46Speaker 1: a little bit off from our normal schedule on Wednesday nights.
- 0:48Speaker 1: So I mean maybe part of the new cycle slowing
- 0:51Speaker 1: down as we're speaking, actually like right during the middle
- 0:54Speaker 1: of the kickoff of the Eagles Cowboys Thursday night football game,
- 0:57Speaker 1: so maybe that's where sports media has been diverted to.
- 1:01Speaker 1: But on top of it, too, the MLB playoff race
- 1:04Speaker 1: is pretty set in terms of like that we know
- 1:07Speaker 1: the teams are going to be there. The seeding is
- 1:09Speaker 1: a little in fluctuation, but it's going to be maybe
- 1:13Speaker 1: a bit of a boring month of September that we'll
- 1:16Speaker 1: have some home run chases with cal Raley and others,
- 1:18Speaker 1: but you know, in terms of locking up playoff seeds,
- 1:22Speaker 1: nothing too intriguing. And I think part of it too
- 1:25Speaker 1: is that, like September one used to be such a
- 1:28Speaker 1: huge highlight I think on the baseball calendar when we
- 1:30Speaker 1: expanded to the forty man rosters back in the day.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Now it was a little much. The forty man was
- 1:37Speaker 1: a little overkilled because then you get like those crazy
- 1:39Speaker 1: bullpen games, which is like a march of minor leaguers
- 1:43Speaker 1: getting out there and trying to find at bats, And
- 1:46Speaker 1: especially for our fantasy game, it was rough because you
- 1:49Speaker 1: couldn't really depend on anybody that was out of the
- 1:51Speaker 1: playoff race to play pretty normally. We've only expanded to
- 1:55Speaker 1: thirty man rosters here going to September September one this week,
- 2:00Speaker 1: so certainly less of an impact. I've got linked in
- 2:02Speaker 1: the show notes of what the call ups were. Anybody
- 2:06Speaker 1: there actually kind of catch your eye because it is
- 2:08Speaker 1: I would say it's also underwhelming, maybe based on what
- 2:12Speaker 1: you've also said about the news cycle, but on top
- 2:15Speaker 1: of it, but a bunch of I L returners kind
- 2:18Speaker 1: of taking out those spots. So it's a little bit
- 2:20Speaker 1: of a fancy shuffling with the IL around September first,
- 2:25Speaker 1: But anybody actually on that list really catch your eye, Like, Ooh,
- 2:28Speaker 1: I'm intrigued to seeing what this guy either does down
- 2:30Speaker 1: the stretch or I might pick him up and add
- 2:32Speaker 1: him to a roster at there.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean most of the names are intriguing, are
- 2:38Speaker 2: like yeah, being activated from the injuriers like that, that's
- 2:41Speaker 2: the big group, like keg leone getting activated and you've
- 2:46Speaker 2: got Meryrill getting activated, guys like that. But you know,
- 2:51Speaker 2: if I was to kind of sneak under and I'm
- 2:52Speaker 2: proably gonna steal some more thunder later, I'm sure if
- 2:55Speaker 2: we're gonna talk about it or not. But like Sal
- 2:58Speaker 2: Stewart getting the call up for the Reds I think
- 3:00Speaker 2: is intriguing. Definitely a good power speed combo. We'll see
- 3:05Speaker 2: see how it plays. But he seems like he's a
- 3:07Speaker 2: kind of a dynamite dude. Just if fits really well
- 3:11Speaker 2: within the Reds lineup. You know, getting Lois angel Alcunya
- 3:15Speaker 2: back from the Mets, I think is going to be
- 3:17Speaker 2: interesting to see how much you know, he really plays,
- 3:20Speaker 2: and so you know, there's there's a few guys, one
- 3:23Speaker 2: of your favorites, Linda of Vila for the Royals getting
- 3:26Speaker 2: a chance to maybe make his metal. We'll see what
- 3:28Speaker 2: see what happens there. But nobody too too big at
- 3:32Speaker 2: this point. But there are a few guys. If I
- 3:34Speaker 2: had to kind of put one that I'd want to
- 3:36Speaker 2: add of my roster and see what's happening, I think
- 3:37Speaker 2: it would be Sal Stewart for me.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, that's actually you shoehorn that perfectly in
- 3:42Speaker 1: terms of the salth Stewart discussion, because that's why I
- 3:45Speaker 1: didn't have his kind of like separate promotion to discuss,
- 3:48Speaker 1: because he came up in that wave on September first.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I think I agree that's probably the number one bat
- 3:54Speaker 1: to pursue. He didn't necessarily have, Like I kind of
- 3:58Speaker 1: cooled on him last year at first for Arizona after
- 4:01Speaker 1: Eric Longenhangen kind of poop pooed his swing a little bit.
- 4:04Speaker 1: He also poo pooed like Jack Caglion's swing, So that
- 4:08Speaker 1: kind of played out. So we'll see how Stewart can
- 4:11Speaker 1: hang at the big league level. But it'll be fun
- 4:14Speaker 1: to see how it plays up there in Cincinnati and
- 4:16Speaker 1: I think you hit the other ones. Kansas City called
- 4:18Speaker 1: up three fun ones. Jack kg Leon coming back from
- 4:21Speaker 1: the IL. I love Windo Revila. Hopefully he can get
- 4:24Speaker 1: some starts down the stretch. You didn't touch on the
- 4:27Speaker 1: other one though I missed.
- 4:28Speaker 2: I missed the Kansas City boy, the homegrown boy there.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I'll let you talk about it, but I did miss
- 4:32Speaker 2: that one here fair because I think.
- 4:33Speaker 1: This is the other bat that's pretty intriguing in terms
- 4:36Speaker 1: of uh. We got Carter Jensen coming up there. He
- 4:40Speaker 1: did get the start tonight at DHS where he's playing,
- 4:43Speaker 1: so it's gonna be his major league debut there. It'll
- 4:47Speaker 1: be cool to see if the Royals do start doing this.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Is like a new strategy that's kind of been kicked
- 4:52Speaker 1: off this year too, between like the Braves doing it
- 4:56Speaker 1: and a couple of other teams. The Rangers have been
- 4:58Speaker 1: doing it a little bit. Has a and quite a
- 5:00Speaker 1: successful of like having two hitting catchers and you switch
- 5:05Speaker 1: them behind the dish and the other one plays a
- 5:06Speaker 1: lot DH. I wonder if the Royals would do that
- 5:09Speaker 1: with Carter Jensen and sal Perez, because that would be
- 5:13Speaker 1: a really great option I think for them going into
- 5:15Speaker 1: twenty twenty six to be able to get Jensen's bat
- 5:19Speaker 1: in the actual lineup, and he crushed this year in
- 5:22Speaker 1: the minor leagues. He's a twenty two year old just
- 5:24Speaker 1: came up. So actually that's the guy I kind of
- 5:27Speaker 1: wanted to see your take on with Carter Jensen, a
- 5:30Speaker 1: catcher for the Royals there.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right, Like he has a pretty
- 5:34Speaker 2: good hit tool. I think it's gonna be interesting to see.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I don't think his you know, from an actual like
- 5:41Speaker 2: fielding perspective, he's like a massively amazing catcher. I think
- 5:45Speaker 2: he's just kind of league average from what I've seen,
- 5:47Speaker 2: But I think he has pretty sneaky power for a catcher,
- 5:51Speaker 2: Like he did hit two ninety and twenty homers in
- 5:54Speaker 2: one hundred eleven games in the miners this year. I
- 5:57Speaker 2: don't know that he's a two ninety hitter. I think
- 6:00Speaker 2: that's he's going to be a maybe a little overmatch
- 6:01Speaker 2: of the hit tool. It's not going to play as well.
- 6:03Speaker 2: But I do think he's one of those guys that
- 6:04Speaker 2: can easily run into twenty homers across a full season.
- 6:08Speaker 2: You know, catch position being a little bit more painful
- 6:11Speaker 2: and he's chips in a few sole and base. I
- 6:12Speaker 2: think that's another trend that we're seeing with young catchers
- 6:15Speaker 2: being a little bit more athletic and just you know,
- 6:19Speaker 2: pitching in five ten stolen bases here and there, and
- 6:21Speaker 2: it feels like Jensen has the capability to do that.
- 6:23Speaker 2: So I do like what I see. I think there
- 6:25Speaker 2: is some strikeout risk here, but he's also got that
- 6:29Speaker 2: gets on base, so definitely obp leagues and things like that.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Jensen's got a nice up arrow here and it'll be
- 6:35Speaker 2: interesting to see what they do long term. Like you said,
- 6:39Speaker 2: the Braves have a good strategy there with Murphy and
- 6:41Speaker 2: Baldwin does the same thing here happened with Perez and Jensen,
- 6:46Speaker 2: and if it does, like that's a good way to
- 6:49Speaker 2: get one hundred and fifty games out of really strong,
- 6:51Speaker 2: strong pats. And also from a pitching staff perspective, like
- 6:54Speaker 2: I think you can't underestimate the relationship between a pitcher
- 6:59Speaker 2: and a catcher and getting them matched up and things
- 7:01Speaker 2: like that, and so there is just something that they
- 7:04Speaker 2: clicks and then be able to miss mixmatch your starters
- 7:07Speaker 2: with your catchers is probably also a big, big win
- 7:09Speaker 2: as well.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. So before we dive into the
- 7:14Speaker 1: rest of the news notes, certainly get into those show
- 7:16Speaker 1: notes this pod because we are discussing our August Player
- 7:20Speaker 1: of the Month PC picks. So if you're not familiar
- 7:23Speaker 1: with this from it's a monthly tradition around here in
- 7:26Speaker 1: terms of going back through Major League Baseball seeing who
- 7:30Speaker 1: those players of the month were for the previous stretch
- 7:34Speaker 1: of game. So we're talking August here, We're going to
- 7:36Speaker 1: go through the al NL hitter, batter, rookie on each side.
- 7:43Speaker 1: So what we do is we just kind of find
- 7:46Speaker 1: one card out there, quote unquote put it in our
- 7:48Speaker 1: pod PC. So use those show notes to go to
- 7:51Speaker 1: rasball dot com check out the related link to this
- 7:53Speaker 1: post or the post that goes with this pod, because
- 7:56Speaker 1: you can see all the pictures of the cards there
- 7:58Speaker 1: in one spot, and I'll be able to see all
- 8:01Speaker 1: the other links to the show notes kind of all
- 8:05Speaker 1: these pieces that we're going to discuss going forward, So
- 8:08Speaker 1: check that out. Let's start with some of these other
- 8:11Speaker 1: promotions that were not a part of that September first
- 8:13Speaker 1: call up. First one we have is Peyton Toll in
- 8:17Speaker 1: Boston getting the call up. The former TCU. Horned Frog
- 8:21Speaker 1: was prick picked last year just in the second round,
- 8:23Speaker 1: so pretty quick rise, and you can see why. The
- 8:26Speaker 1: twenty twenty five stats blitzed through three levels, starting at
- 8:30Speaker 1: High A, capping off obviously at TRIPAA before making this
- 8:34Speaker 1: debut this past week. It was a dazzling debut two
- 8:38Speaker 1: five and a third frames with a thirteen point five
- 8:43Speaker 1: K nine. That's coming off of a three point zero
- 8:45Speaker 1: four ERA over ninety one and two thirds innings in
- 8:48Speaker 1: the minor leagues with just an incredible thirteen K nine.
- 8:53Speaker 1: This is a guy who actually Baseball Prospectus said if
- 8:56Speaker 1: they ever gave an eighty grade on a fastball, it
- 8:59Speaker 1: might be Peyton Toll, just because it's got crazy spin
- 9:02Speaker 1: on it. He really pumps it up there into the
- 9:04Speaker 1: mid to upper nineties. You can see actually on the
- 9:08Speaker 1: Stuff Plus on his Fangrass page one hundred and twenty
- 9:11Speaker 1: two Stuff Plus on that fastball. So the control here
- 9:15Speaker 1: is gonna be I think the big key for Toll.
- 9:17Speaker 1: You know that didn't come through in the Stuff Plus model,
- 9:19Speaker 1: but it was obviously his debut. Everything look electric is
- 9:24Speaker 1: Toll like the guy to own down the stretch even
- 9:26Speaker 1: over like some of these other big arms we've talked about,
- 9:29Speaker 1: like Jonah Toong and we're gonna talk about another one
- 9:32Speaker 1: here coming out Brandon Sprout, Nolan McClain, would Toll actually
- 9:37Speaker 1: be your number one? Like if you had to put
- 9:40Speaker 1: all your chips in on one bid for a waiver wire.
- 9:44Speaker 2: It would be close. I think it's between him and
- 9:46Speaker 2: Nolan McClain For me right now, I think McClain it
- 9:51Speaker 2: feels a little bit more polished than Toll. And I
- 9:53Speaker 2: don't know how much you've watched Toll play, Like if
- 9:56Speaker 2: you're gonna watch one of the guys this Toll all day,
- 9:59Speaker 2: that guy is like if you if you took a
- 10:01Speaker 2: Beer League softball guy and put him on the mound,
- 10:04Speaker 2: it's Peyton Toll. Like. He doesn't look like he belongs.
- 10:06Speaker 2: He looks like he should be, you know, hitting on
- 10:09Speaker 2: a Sunday nights only type of thing. But I think
- 10:13Speaker 2: he has you know, if if you're looking for strikeouts
- 10:16Speaker 2: and things like that, that might that might give him
- 10:19Speaker 2: the push. But I think McLain's a little bit more
- 10:20Speaker 2: polished at this point, and so I would take take
- 10:23Speaker 2: him there. That said, I think Toll like he he
- 10:26Speaker 2: has risen through the miners fast, and like he has
- 10:29Speaker 2: not meant found a challenge yet that he has not
- 10:32Speaker 2: been able to overcome. And like this is purely in that,
- 10:37Speaker 2: Like I have a fastball that is fast and unique,
- 10:41Speaker 2: and I like he's got some extension on it, because
- 10:44Speaker 2: you know, Peyton Toll is a big, big boy. Yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 2: you know six six two fifteen. If I recall, like
- 10:49Speaker 2: based on his release, he releases it more kind of
- 10:51Speaker 2: like a seven footer, and so like, not only is
- 10:54Speaker 2: he bringing in there like you know, ninety eight ninety
- 10:56Speaker 2: nine at times, Uh, the extension it's it's kind of
- 10:59Speaker 2: like the Little League World Series where they pitch closer
- 11:01Speaker 2: and they say it actually seems faster than they throw
- 11:03Speaker 2: in it. I think that applies to Peyton Toll here.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I don't know what the calculation actually is, but it is.
- 11:09Speaker 2: It is devastating. And the thing is you mentioned the control,
- 11:13Speaker 2: Like there's two types of control, right, There's can you
- 11:16Speaker 2: throw strikes? And then do you actually know within the
- 11:18Speaker 2: zone where it's going. Toll seems like he can throw
- 11:21Speaker 2: strikes like he is you know, throughout the minors, never
- 11:24Speaker 2: had an issue with walks, and this whole minor league
- 11:28Speaker 2: season he had pitched ninety one total innings and he
- 11:32Speaker 2: had twenty three walks. So he keeps it in the zone,
- 11:36Speaker 2: and it's a hard pitch shape to hit, and so
- 11:40Speaker 2: people struggle with it. Now major league hitters gonna be
- 11:43Speaker 2: a little bit better with that, So I think he's
- 11:45Speaker 2: going to have to adapt to that. But there's a
- 11:48Speaker 2: lot to like, a lot to like here. If I
- 11:50Speaker 2: wanted a nitpick, it's he's a more of a one
- 11:53Speaker 2: pitch pitcher, and he's still been figuring out the cutter
- 11:56Speaker 2: and a few other things. But you know, I've seen
- 12:01Speaker 2: some folks out there say that he's like the number
- 12:03Speaker 2: one pitching prospect kind of right now, the way he
- 12:06Speaker 2: has accelerated through the buyers, and I don't. I'm not
- 12:09Speaker 2: gonna refute that. So you put me on the spot.
- 12:12Speaker 2: I'm taking McClain, But like buy a hair.
- 12:15Speaker 1: I think I take Tong Toll than McClain personally, just
- 12:19Speaker 1: because I like the right handed repertoire. It's a little
- 12:22Speaker 1: more polished again, just kind of like McClain, but with
- 12:25Speaker 1: Tong in terms of having the larger repertoire. Because the
- 12:29Speaker 1: one thing that does kind of scare me about Toll
- 12:31Speaker 1: is you know, being a southpaw Infantway Park with only
- 12:34Speaker 1: a fastball. I mean, you are talking major league hitters.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I think he's gonna eventually run into a team that
- 12:39Speaker 1: can kind of square it up. But it's gonna be
- 12:41Speaker 1: tough because, like you said, ninety ninth percentile and the extension,
- 12:46Speaker 1: big old guy kind of bananas that he fell to
- 12:49Speaker 1: the second round and roast so quickly. So it's a
- 12:52Speaker 1: little bit of like a testament to the Red Sox
- 12:55Speaker 1: pitching development and just scouting. I So I think if
- 13:00Speaker 1: we did this over, he would be going well in
- 13:02Speaker 1: the top half of the first round. But assuming any
- 13:06Speaker 1: organization would be able to juice all this extra kind
- 13:09Speaker 1: of profile out of Toll that the Red Sox have
- 13:12Speaker 1: gotten so big, big time arm and crazy just considering
- 13:16Speaker 1: where he started on lists at the beginning of this year.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, if you if you grabbed him, you should
- 13:22Speaker 2: be very very happy.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Yeah, because we'll talk about now Brandon Sprote from the
- 13:26Speaker 1: New York Mets, who certainly started ahead of Toll, and
- 13:29Speaker 1: any of these other guys that we've talked about before
- 13:31Speaker 1: the season started. But it has been a little bit
- 13:34Speaker 1: of a tougher road for him. In Triple A, he's
- 13:36Speaker 1: getting called up after one hundred and twenty one endings
- 13:39Speaker 1: of a four to twenty four era. August has been
- 13:42Speaker 1: especially rough twenty six innings of a four to eighty
- 13:44Speaker 1: five ra as it kind of had the hallmarks of
- 13:47Speaker 1: a guy who's just bored in Triple A and really
- 13:50Speaker 1: kind of bummed that all of his friends around him
- 13:52Speaker 1: got called up and he was the last one up.
- 13:54Speaker 1: But with the Mets kind of trying to figure out
- 13:56Speaker 1: what to do with the struggling code I Senga, sending
- 13:59Speaker 1: him probably to the miners to get tuned up for
- 14:02Speaker 1: the minor leagues opens up a spot for Sprote. What
- 14:05Speaker 1: do you think he can be? Because do you think
- 14:07Speaker 1: there is signal in the noise of his twenty twenty
- 14:11Speaker 1: five numbers there at Triple A where it hasn't been
- 14:13Speaker 1: as sharp as McLean or Tong or Toll or do
- 14:18Speaker 1: you think that this is a guy who now these
- 14:20Speaker 1: in the majors might find a little bit of what
- 14:22Speaker 1: he was putting up in previous season. So just as
- 14:25Speaker 1: a as a marker, you know, he came across three
- 14:28Speaker 1: levels in twenty twenty four and Sprote put up a
- 14:31Speaker 1: three forty era of a one one, six and a
- 14:34Speaker 1: third UH of innings of pitching. So this is a
- 14:38Speaker 1: guy who was last year's McLain was last year's toll.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Do you think he can rEFInd that magic?
- 14:45Speaker 2: I think to a degree he can. Like he he
- 14:47Speaker 2: has been since like late June, he was actually lights
- 14:51Speaker 2: out and he had made it some pitch mixed changes
- 14:54Speaker 2: where he's kind of trade out some sinker sweeper for
- 14:56Speaker 2: change curves, like he had been making actual changes in
- 15:00Speaker 2: since late June. His era is like two and a half.
- 15:03Speaker 2: You know, K rates thirty percent. You know, walks are
- 15:07Speaker 2: still a bit of a concern. I you know, I
- 15:10Speaker 2: actually was very surprised. I had him in one the
- 15:11Speaker 2: league and dropped him, and I I just didn't think
- 15:14Speaker 2: they were gonna call him up After calling up to McLain,
- 15:16Speaker 2: I just didn't think that they were gonna gonna pull
- 15:18Speaker 2: this one because I think that there is a larger
- 15:21Speaker 2: variability in the outcome, like he It does seem like
- 15:24Speaker 2: he's regressed a little bit, and I think he is.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Stuff is still really really good, but it seems like
- 15:30Speaker 2: it comes and goes a little bit more than some
- 15:32Speaker 2: other pictures. So like the Polish isn't quite there of
- 15:34Speaker 2: like what you see with like a tong or McLean
- 15:36Speaker 2: at this point and this, yeah, I go back, we've
- 15:39Speaker 2: talked with him before. I feel like for pictures, especially
- 15:42Speaker 2: young prospects when they're when they're bowling to the minors,
- 15:44Speaker 2: you gotta get him up because they need that taste
- 15:46Speaker 2: of success and they need that coach at the big
- 15:49Speaker 2: league level that's really gonna give him what they can.
- 15:51Speaker 2: And so I think Sprouts struggled a little bit and
- 15:53Speaker 2: then the miners, but he has found his way. So
- 15:55Speaker 2: I still think overall, long term there's a positive outlook
- 15:59Speaker 2: for him. But I do think I've got him maybe
- 16:02Speaker 2: a tick below some of those other guys at this point.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Just not sure that you know overall the the stuff
- 16:10Speaker 2: is where we want to see, but I think it's
- 16:13Speaker 2: relatively a high floor profile like it's I think that
- 16:16Speaker 2: we're looking like a number like a back in three
- 16:20Speaker 2: top four, high four starter right now unless he can really,
- 16:25Speaker 2: you know, take a step forward with his pitch mix.
- 16:26Speaker 1: So yep, I think I'm right there with you. I mean,
- 16:29Speaker 1: I think great pickup because he's coming up, But I
- 16:32Speaker 1: wouldn't expect some of these right tail in outcomes that
- 16:36Speaker 1: come from Toll and Tong and McClain over the past
- 16:39Speaker 1: couple of weeks. That's a solid stream pitcher, but sports
- 16:42Speaker 1: addable where you've got him. Okay, next call up we
- 16:45Speaker 1: have this is just gonna be a little bit of
- 16:47Speaker 1: a goofball segment just because we are Cardinals fans. I've
- 16:50Speaker 1: been looking forward to this one for a while. Jimmy Crooks,
- 16:53Speaker 1: twenty twenty two fourth round pick out of Oklahoma, is
- 16:55Speaker 1: making his MLB debut. I mean, has already got called
- 16:59Speaker 1: up this past week, coming on the heels of hitting
- 17:02Speaker 1: two seventy four, three thirty seven, four forty one. That's
- 17:05Speaker 1: a one zho four WRC plus with fourteen bombs in
- 17:09Speaker 1: ninety eight games at triple A. I think the surprising
- 17:13Speaker 1: here thing the surprising thing here is that the WRC
- 17:16Speaker 1: plus was above one hundred and triple A for Crooks.
- 17:19Speaker 1: This is a guy who was a glove first kind
- 17:21Speaker 1: of set to be a backup in the major leagues,
- 17:25Speaker 1: most likely because he is a fantastic backstop, great hands,
- 17:30Speaker 1: can just really control a game. What do you have
- 17:33Speaker 1: to say about Jimmy Crooks? Because I love this dude.
- 17:35Speaker 1: I'm glad to see him getting a shot, and honestly,
- 17:37Speaker 1: he's made it so quickly as a twenty three year old,
- 17:40Speaker 1: it's actually giving me some intrigue where there used to
- 17:44Speaker 1: be zero because this is the type of player who
- 17:47Speaker 1: we've talked about before, where if the glove, the glove
- 17:50Speaker 1: gets him in the lineup daily, and he's been young
- 17:53Speaker 1: enough to get there, to get the reps at major
- 17:56Speaker 1: league level, it could be somebody who in his late
- 17:59Speaker 1: twenties turns into a decent bat.
- 18:00Speaker 2: What do you think, Yeah, I think I struggle to
- 18:04Speaker 2: evaluate because everything you said is right, But this year
- 18:07Speaker 2: has really shifted my view on the catcher position and
- 18:11Speaker 2: what it takes to be valuable in the in the
- 18:15Speaker 2: in the fantasy game from a catcher position. First of all,
- 18:18Speaker 2: you know Homer guy here, fa like, I'm excited to
- 18:21Speaker 2: see see what he brings. Uh. To your point, glove
- 18:24Speaker 2: first does a lot. But man, the guy's been hitting
- 18:27Speaker 2: this year and it's not been like, it's not been cheap,
- 18:29Speaker 2: it's not been luck. You know, he's he's been able
- 18:31Speaker 2: to do some really good things. But you look out
- 18:35Speaker 2: a few years here and you see this guy that
- 18:37Speaker 2: might hit two sixty two seventy pp up ten to
- 18:40Speaker 2: fifteen home runs like that used to be something for
- 18:43Speaker 2: a catchers like yeah, I'll take that, you know back
- 18:45Speaker 2: in first you know, first catcher or you know, high
- 18:48Speaker 2: ends catcher number two. But I feel like that profile
- 18:53Speaker 2: is just not as valuable as it once was because
- 18:55Speaker 2: what we talked about earlier with teams starting to deploy
- 18:58Speaker 2: two very strong hitting catchers and so so I think
- 19:01Speaker 2: that's going to kind of downgrade the value of a
- 19:03Speaker 2: guy like Jimmy Crooks for what he can actually do.
- 19:06Speaker 2: At the same time, I don't know if the Cardinals
- 19:09Speaker 2: know who is their catcher in the future right now.
- 19:11Speaker 2: I thought of them, but it seems like Raver can't
- 19:15Speaker 2: stay healthy controllers, isn't a catcher? Is what is he
- 19:20Speaker 2: gonna do? Like there there's a lot of questions behind
- 19:23Speaker 2: the play there. So I actually hope he gets a
- 19:24Speaker 2: run because to your point, this is this is the
- 19:27Speaker 2: epinion of what I love about, you know, the game
- 19:30Speaker 2: of baseball. Fourth round pick. He was never like a
- 19:33Speaker 2: highly regarded prospect. He was like, he's a top ten
- 19:36Speaker 2: prospect for the Cardinals, but like not big on prospects,
- 19:38Speaker 2: less successful everywhere he goes get someone called in the minors,
- 19:41Speaker 2: and like, those are the guys that just continue to
- 19:43Speaker 2: be successful and carve out a career. That's what I
- 19:47Speaker 2: love about the game. So I just hope he gets
- 19:49Speaker 2: a run to prove what he can do versus you know,
- 19:55Speaker 2: pin hitting here and there and catching every fourth day.
- 19:58Speaker 2: But we'll see.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think that's a that's a great take.
- 20:02Speaker 1: All right, let's move on to some injuries. So we
- 20:04Speaker 1: covered all the fun stuff. Let's get into the grim
- 20:06Speaker 1: stuff first. We're gonna start off with I mean, this
- 20:09Speaker 1: is a pretty big one, especially considering I think how
- 20:12Speaker 1: much he was carrying fantasy teams out there before the injury.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Outfielder Roman Anthony for the Boston Red Sox has been
- 20:19Speaker 1: placed on the il with an oblique strain. Seems like
- 20:22Speaker 1: it's gonna keep him out four to six weeks, so
- 20:25Speaker 1: I think we're probably done with Roman Anthony in fantasy.
- 20:28Speaker 1: But there's a decent chance he makes it back on
- 20:30Speaker 1: the field for the playoffs for the real life Boston
- 20:33Speaker 1: Red Sox, and if this does rap the season, it
- 20:36Speaker 1: was a pretty solid debut for Anthony. A two ninety two,
- 20:39Speaker 1: three ninety six, four to sixty three slash line that's
- 20:42Speaker 1: a one thirty eight WRC plus. Kept the strikeouts just
- 20:46Speaker 1: in check enough with a twenty seven point seven percent
- 20:49Speaker 1: great walk rate, great eye thirty thirteen point two percent,
- 20:53Speaker 1: eight homers, four Stonlee bases in seventy one games. You
- 20:57Speaker 1: go to the statcast page, the Savant page here for
- 21:01Speaker 1: Roman Anthony, it's pretty beat red except for the whiff
- 21:04Speaker 1: and the k rates. This is a guy who just
- 21:07Speaker 1: hits the crap out of the ball. I think we're
- 21:09Speaker 1: waiting maybe to see if the launch aingle kinning prease
- 21:13Speaker 1: a little bit, but even if it sticks where it is,
- 21:16Speaker 1: it's a great profile. Where I'm going here, I think
- 21:19Speaker 1: with my question is in twenty twenty six, where do
- 21:22Speaker 1: you feel comfortable drafting him? Because I think people will
- 21:25Speaker 1: see the beat red profile on Savant, They'll see the
- 21:30Speaker 1: pretty good surface level stats. I mean a one forty
- 21:32Speaker 1: six WRC plus as that it was a one thirty eight.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Sorry for juicing it by eight points, but one thirty
- 21:38Speaker 1: eight WRC plus is gonna really pop out as a
- 21:41Speaker 1: twenty one year old. So do you think this is
- 21:43Speaker 1: somebody you feel comfortable creeping into the second round with
- 21:48Speaker 1: or is it someone who you just need another year
- 21:53Speaker 1: before you feel okay getting into that mode of the
- 21:56Speaker 1: second round pick.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you could be pretty comfortable. And I'm
- 22:02Speaker 2: gonna I'm gonna make a comp here. I'm checking one
- 22:03Speaker 2: thing before I make this. This comp really really stick
- 22:07Speaker 2: because I want to see the stat cat's page. But
- 22:12Speaker 2: if we look at last year, so romote Anthony this
- 22:16Speaker 2: year in seventy one games, eight homers, four steals, two
- 22:20Speaker 2: ninety two ninety two average, you know he's thirteen twenty
- 22:26Speaker 2: k rate. I'm sure you memorized all that right. Last
- 22:31Speaker 2: year seventy nine games, nine homers, fourteen steals to sixty
- 22:37Speaker 2: four average, twelve percent walk rate, twenty nine percent k
- 22:41Speaker 2: rate for WRC plus of one twenty. And I think
- 22:44Speaker 2: what Anthony was one thirty eight. So relatively similar. That
- 22:48Speaker 2: was James Wood. And if you look at their Savant pages,
- 22:52Speaker 2: and also the number one comp from a Savant in
- 22:55Speaker 2: perspective is James Wood for romone Anthony, and it is uncanny.
- 23:01Speaker 2: They are very very similar. They whiff a lot, they
- 23:05Speaker 2: strike out a lot, they hit the ball incredibly hard.
- 23:08Speaker 2: They run, but they're not the most sufficient at doing
- 23:11Speaker 2: it type of thing. And James Woods what a second
- 23:14Speaker 2: third rounder, right, that's where he is, and they both
- 23:18Speaker 2: have the same issue with they hit the ball on
- 23:21Speaker 2: the ground too much, and so like that's your comprede there.
- 23:25Speaker 2: It's very very clear. And the reason I say second
- 23:30Speaker 2: third rounder because they are going to both be held
- 23:32Speaker 2: back by that same issue too many grounders, both of
- 23:36Speaker 2: them fifty percent ground ball rates. They are hit the
- 23:39Speaker 2: ball incredibly hard on the ground, but it needs to
- 23:42Speaker 2: go in the air to leave the park. The extra
- 23:45Speaker 2: base hits, all all of those things. I know, I'm
- 23:49Speaker 2: just a physicistic the degrees I needed to be on
- 23:52Speaker 2: this podcast, but I think that that's the comp that's
- 23:57Speaker 2: the value, and I don't have any qualms drafting Anthony
- 24:01Speaker 2: in that position. I will take James Wood over Anthony,
- 24:03Speaker 2: just be very clear with the one additional year of development.
- 24:06Speaker 2: But I think they're kind of almost back to back
- 24:09Speaker 2: in the draft next year.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not sure you're gonna get that choice. I
- 24:13Speaker 1: think what's going to be in the first round. But yeah,
- 24:16Speaker 1: I think I'm right there with you because it also
- 24:19Speaker 1: it reminds me a little bit of like, yeah, better
- 24:23Speaker 1: than Jackson Merril too, that this is you just watched
- 24:25Speaker 1: this guy play Anthony and you just kind of see
- 24:28Speaker 1: the balls off the bat. It's pretty special stuff. So
- 24:31Speaker 1: I think I'm right there with you, probably in the
- 24:34Speaker 1: two three turn, but I think he's gonna get pushed
- 24:36Speaker 1: up to early second round, and at that point it's
- 24:39Speaker 1: going to become tough because then you're talking like crazy
- 24:43Speaker 1: volume guys and like you know, Lindors and Machados, and it's.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Kind of like shorbers and stuff, Like you're gonna say,
- 24:52Speaker 2: Kyle Rally is gonna be sitting there. I wouldn't raft
- 24:54Speaker 2: be very clear, but he's gonna be sitting there, Like
- 24:56Speaker 2: you're gonna start to get into that, like guys are
- 24:58Speaker 2: doing crazy things and until they can make that switch,
- 25:04Speaker 2: which you know, both of these guys like that's been
- 25:08Speaker 2: the entire minor league and major league career has been
- 25:10Speaker 2: this kind of one achilles heel, which is not a
- 25:13Speaker 2: bad thing to be hitting line drives and ground balls. Like,
- 25:15Speaker 2: let's be clear, from a baseball perspective, it's it's it's
- 25:18Speaker 2: not a big big deal, but from a fantasy game,
- 25:20Speaker 2: it does cap the upside a little bit. And both
- 25:23Speaker 2: of these guys, I think long term they're gonna stop
- 25:25Speaker 2: running as much, and so they're gonna need to figure
- 25:28Speaker 2: out the power out of one of their game to
- 25:30Speaker 2: keep in that, you know, early second round conversation.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean the nice thing too with Wood
- 25:37Speaker 1: and Anthony is the batting average floor is much higher
- 25:40Speaker 1: than I think you would expect it to be because
- 25:42Speaker 1: they do hit the snot out of the ball. When
- 25:44Speaker 1: they do hit the ground balls, they're impossible to field.
- 25:47Speaker 1: So that's a I think kind.
- 25:49Speaker 2: They make it through like shift or not, they're making
- 25:51Speaker 2: it through exactly.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Okay, Well, let's move on to the injuries to somebody
- 25:56Speaker 1: who was probably used to be floating in that second
- 25:58Speaker 1: and third round discussion. I I think it's probably done
- 26:01Speaker 1: at this point because Corey Seger's kind of moved into
- 26:04Speaker 1: that Byron Buxton face of where like, you've got a
- 26:08Speaker 1: the stats are great, but you've got to like only
- 26:11Speaker 1: put up like one hundred games on his projection every year.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I think, you know, one hundred hundred and twenty. He
- 26:18Speaker 1: wrapped this year at one O two then when it
- 26:21Speaker 1: underwent an appendectomy this past week, so technically he could
- 26:26Speaker 1: make it back. The Rangers have like a twelve percent
- 26:28Speaker 1: playoff chance I just don't know if they're gonna want
- 26:32Speaker 1: to risk it with Corey Seeger considering this is a
- 26:35Speaker 1: guy who has also had like a couple of other
- 26:38Speaker 1: abdomen injuries and like a couple of hernia injuries and
- 26:43Speaker 1: back injuries, and like, there's no reason I think to
- 26:46Speaker 1: really have the Rangers rushing back, especially considering it's under
- 26:50Speaker 1: contract through twenty thirty one, so that'll be a fun
- 26:54Speaker 1: end of the contract for the Rangers. But if it
- 26:56Speaker 1: is the end of the season two seventy one, three
- 26:58Speaker 1: seventy three, forty seven, one thirty six WRC plus twenty
- 27:03Speaker 1: one homers. Are you there with me on Seeger in
- 27:07Speaker 1: terms of this is a guy you've got to give
- 27:09Speaker 1: the Buckston treatment? Are you still believing?
- 27:12Speaker 2: No, I'm I'm there, Like I bought him into Secer
- 27:16Speaker 2: this year a little bit, and it's just been a
- 27:18Speaker 2: headache the whole year. Like the thing is, it's not
- 27:21Speaker 2: like Buckston at least when he gets hurt, Like it's
- 27:23Speaker 2: just hurt and he's out for like a month and
- 27:25Speaker 2: then he's back. Seger, It's just like, come on, it
- 27:28Speaker 2: happened Dect to me. Like it's just been like he's
- 27:31Speaker 2: on the il he's back off, he's on again. Like it,
- 27:34Speaker 2: it's been very very hard to manage it. The results
- 27:37Speaker 2: are still there, like he's still a great hitter, all
- 27:39Speaker 2: those things still flow through with it. The power is
- 27:41Speaker 2: slightly down this year, and all that comes down to
- 27:44Speaker 2: is he was hitting a few less fly balls, so
- 27:47Speaker 2: that that just translated just slightly. But the quality of
- 27:51Speaker 2: hitter has not changed, but you do have to start
- 27:55Speaker 2: to downgrade that a little bit. The hard part with
- 27:58Speaker 2: the guy like Seeger is you can expect a little
- 28:02Speaker 2: bit more batting average out of him, which is like
- 28:04Speaker 2: really hard to find in that kind of like i'd
- 28:06Speaker 2: say mid single digits draft routes and like the four
- 28:10Speaker 2: five six, like you get there, Like getting batting average
- 28:14Speaker 2: with good runs, good RBIs and home runs like that
- 28:18Speaker 2: is a you want that and it is so tempting
- 28:20Speaker 2: to draft him, but like you're right, I think you
- 28:23Speaker 2: now just have to put him in for one hundred
- 28:25Speaker 2: and ten, one hundred and twenty games every year and
- 28:28Speaker 2: that's what your expectation should be.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's also no speed, Like it's starting to
- 28:33Speaker 1: really morph pretty quickly into like a Carlos Korea profile
- 28:36Speaker 1: even too, where it's like the cliff can be really dangerous,
- 28:41Speaker 1: really fast if there's no speed, So like, yeah, I'll
- 28:45Speaker 1: be fascinating to see where he goes in drafts. I
- 28:47Speaker 1: think there'll probably be some rooms where he really really
- 28:49Speaker 1: falls because so many people over the years have been
- 28:52Speaker 1: burnt by an injured seeker year. But it's also it
- 28:56Speaker 1: only takes one or two believers to see this projection
- 28:59Speaker 1: and move secret at the draft board.
- 29:01Speaker 2: So yeah, and I think this is the kind of
- 29:04Speaker 2: guy that you should not be shocked if he also
- 29:06Speaker 2: turns into a healthy season, hits forty homers and hits
- 29:09Speaker 2: three ten right. I think that's that's the problem with
- 29:11Speaker 2: Secret is that it's like he absolutely could do that.
- 29:15Speaker 2: You just can't count on that. And all it takes,
- 29:17Speaker 2: to your point is one guy who listens to me
- 29:20Speaker 2: say that goes and drafts Someone's like, oh, well you overpaid, right,
- 29:24Speaker 2: Uh So I don't have a problem with him on
- 29:26Speaker 2: your team as long as you've planned around it.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Okay, let's move on to our next injury. It's a
- 29:31Speaker 1: bit of a gruesome one, as Lortis Gurriel Junior towards
- 29:34Speaker 1: acl and had to be carted off from the field
- 29:38Speaker 1: over this past week and I'm gonna wrap up his season. Obviously,
- 29:41Speaker 1: it was a two forty eight two ninety five four
- 29:44Speaker 1: eighteen slash line finally slip below the WRC plus mark
- 29:48Speaker 1: of one hundred for the first time in his career.
- 29:50Speaker 1: But it also came with nineteen homers, ten stone bases,
- 29:54Speaker 1: and ad RBI, which is I've always loved Guryel because
- 29:58Speaker 1: of like his price and drafts, and this is the
- 30:00Speaker 1: type of guy who makes like a perfect fourth or
- 30:03Speaker 1: fifth outfielder where hits two seventy five eighteen to twenty
- 30:06Speaker 1: two homers, eighty RBI, handful of steals. You really need
- 30:11Speaker 1: that production from Guryel over an entire season to be
- 30:15Speaker 1: able to compete in fantasy leagues. It's just consistent, day in,
- 30:19Speaker 1: day out production. Unfortunately, I think we have to put
- 30:23Speaker 1: a close on that era of Lord is Guriel because
- 30:26Speaker 1: he is going to be thirty two next year starting.
- 30:30Speaker 1: He turned thirty two in October, so it's gonna be
- 30:33Speaker 1: the backside of his career and he's only got one
- 30:36Speaker 1: more year there or in Arizona, So the park boost
- 30:40Speaker 1: is going to be leaving us from Guryel as well.
- 30:42Speaker 1: So are you there with me on Guryel in terms
- 30:45Speaker 1: of like not finding him quite as dependable going forward,
- 30:48Speaker 1: or the other option two is do you maybe have
- 30:51Speaker 1: somebody in mind who could be new Guryel Where I mean,
- 30:55Speaker 1: this guy has been doing it since like twenty teenish,
- 31:00Speaker 1: you know, when he was twenty five almost six seven
- 31:05Speaker 1: years of just great, steady production for cheap for Guryel.
- 31:09Speaker 1: These dudes are hard to find, and as you know,
- 31:11Speaker 1: he's on my Auto Neew team, so it's been great
- 31:14Speaker 1: in formats where you have five outfielders like autonew these
- 31:19Speaker 1: dudes are much more valuable than you think because they
- 31:22Speaker 1: just play every day. So thoughts on Guryel, thoughts on
- 31:25Speaker 1: possible replacements that could rise up and be that cheap
- 31:29Speaker 1: option in the future.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I'm going to disagree with you a
- 31:33Speaker 2: little bit that he you know, it's kind of the
- 31:36Speaker 2: rides kind of over, because I think maybe the production
- 31:40Speaker 2: and the decrease that you're expecting is going to come
- 31:42Speaker 2: back in line with what he's been had. The payments
- 31:45Speaker 2: had to be at the draft table for him. I
- 31:48Speaker 2: think he's he's always been that afterthought because he just
- 31:51Speaker 2: hasn't been enough that it'll drops a little bit and
- 31:55Speaker 2: people are, you know, still drafting the same spot. I
- 31:58Speaker 2: don't think you're too far off from an overall value perspective.
- 32:02Speaker 2: And you know, he's still made progress the plate. He
- 32:05Speaker 2: just he had a really bad David Peer, so that
- 32:07Speaker 2: dragged him down. So I'm still willing to give him
- 32:09Speaker 2: the benefit of the doubt for a few more years.
- 32:12Speaker 2: If you want to try to pigeonhole somebody into that,
- 32:15Speaker 2: I mean, look a little farther we talked about earlier.
- 32:16Speaker 2: The guy like Sal Stewart feels very much like Guriell,
- 32:20Speaker 2: like not gonna light the world on fire. You can
- 32:22Speaker 2: do anything crazy there, but like you're gonna turn around
- 32:25Speaker 2: like the guy hit decently, still picked a few bases up,
- 32:28Speaker 2: hit a few homers, like I think it's that that
- 32:31Speaker 2: kind of guy. So I'm I'm willing to give him
- 32:34Speaker 2: another another year or two on Guriella and be excited
- 32:37Speaker 2: about it. But excited means the fourth outfielder excited. So
- 32:41Speaker 2: that's a little a little ding there, But if the
- 32:43Speaker 2: price is right, I'm still fine with it.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and I actually seweart it's a great call because
- 32:49Speaker 1: you also get that ballpark boost in Cincinnati, So yeah,
- 32:52Speaker 1: that's a key aspect to it is like finding a
- 32:54Speaker 1: good home ballpark and it's just cheaper. Okay, let's move
- 32:59Speaker 1: on to you a couple of injured closers. We have
- 33:01Speaker 1: Trevor McGill going down in Milwaukee with a flexer strain.
- 33:06Speaker 1: That brings Abner Eurebay, who's been really lights out this year.
- 33:10Speaker 1: It's been a one to eighty seven ARRA over a
- 33:13Speaker 1: sixty seven and a third innings with ten point eight
- 33:16Speaker 1: K nine. What is the walk minus B or the
- 33:20Speaker 1: K minus BB's at twenty point four percent for eu Rebay,
- 33:23Speaker 1: which has just been really great considering how bad his
- 33:27Speaker 1: control was the first two years of his career. Then
- 33:30Speaker 1: in San Francisco, we have Brandy Rodriguez unfortunately going down
- 33:33Speaker 1: with a Tommy John surgery, which was a huge bummer
- 33:36Speaker 1: because he had a breakout season there for San Francisco
- 33:40Speaker 1: and it was just a two pitch mix, which is
- 33:43Speaker 1: kind of crazy, but two super elite offerings led to
- 33:46Speaker 1: a one c NB eight ERA over fifty to two
- 33:49Speaker 1: thirds innings and was the closer. But now that job
- 33:54Speaker 1: goes to Ryan Walker. Question, here is a difference between
- 33:59Speaker 1: Urubay and Walk in terms of your rankings and I
- 34:02Speaker 1: would think that you would probably prefer you Rebay because
- 34:05Speaker 1: both Walker and you Rebay are going to go down.
- 34:08Speaker 1: The stretch is probably the closers. I don't see Miguel
- 34:11Speaker 1: getting back here pretty quick. But is the gap so
- 34:15Speaker 1: significant that you're willing to really kind of but I mean,
- 34:19Speaker 1: is it a close enough gap where you feel comfortable
- 34:24Speaker 1: still going through and getting Walker?
- 34:27Speaker 2: Yeah, so like you're absolutely right after your Rebay is
- 34:31Speaker 2: the pick up here? Like he's looked unbelievable all year.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Stat Gas is like pure red ironically very similar around
- 34:38Speaker 2: Walker is twenty twenty four if you actually made the compsunny,
- 34:42Speaker 2: they're very, very similar. But you do have to also
- 34:45Speaker 2: admit that Walker has you know, he's he struggled at
- 34:48Speaker 2: the beginning of the year. He has some just really
- 34:50Speaker 2: a rough look. But since like the beginning of the
- 34:55Speaker 2: you know, I would say maybe at the beginning of summer,
- 34:57Speaker 2: but like beginning of July has been absolutely dominant. He
- 35:03Speaker 2: has a he's been he's only twenty two millions. I
- 35:06Speaker 2: get a reliever, right, But ten k for nine two
- 35:08Speaker 2: walk per nine, that's an area of one point six
- 35:12Speaker 2: four with a two point one four FIP ground balls
- 35:15Speaker 2: a fifty five percent of the time. Walker has been
- 35:17Speaker 2: phenomenal as well, And so the question is the gap
- 35:21Speaker 2: that big? Like I don't think the gap is as
- 35:22Speaker 2: big as people think. And so I actually really interested
- 35:26Speaker 2: in Walker for next year because I think he's a sneak.
- 35:30Speaker 2: He like when he lost his job, he didn't deserve
- 35:33Speaker 2: to lose his job, in my opinion, Like he had
- 35:35Speaker 2: a few bad luckoutings, they were kind of spread like
- 35:38Speaker 2: it just I think people get caught up in the
- 35:39Speaker 2: early season roller coaster of relievers aren't always perfect in
- 35:43Speaker 2: all times, and he got the short end of the
- 35:45Speaker 2: stick and they tried to bring to a ball and
- 35:47Speaker 2: like all these things, like let's not do that. Ryan
- 35:50Speaker 2: Walker should be the closer for the Giants. But that's
- 35:54Speaker 2: not to take anything away from Avnerribe, who is absolutely
- 35:57Speaker 2: the pick up here if you're looking at the rest
- 35:58Speaker 2: of the season, and I I think, like if he
- 36:01Speaker 2: proves it, like the he I think he's a closer
- 36:05Speaker 2: for twenty six for the Brewers because this is a
- 36:08Speaker 2: team that loves to trade away the assets at the
- 36:10Speaker 2: top of their value. And you know McGill's he's not
- 36:15Speaker 2: a spring chicken anymore. Like but they would not be
- 36:18Speaker 2: surprised to look them to capitalize on him, get some
- 36:21Speaker 2: value out of him, and then move on. So love
- 36:24Speaker 2: them both taking your rebay, but the GAP's not nearly
- 36:26Speaker 2: as big as people think.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's a pretty good point. Okay. Last
- 36:31Speaker 1: news piece that we have is that Hassiung Kim was
- 36:35Speaker 1: recently put on the irrevocable waivers or whatever it is
- 36:39Speaker 1: that happens in August from the Tampa Bay Rays. So
- 36:41Speaker 1: this one kind of came as a shock because I
- 36:44Speaker 1: think there's tons of names that are going through this
- 36:47Speaker 1: waiver system, and it used to be that it felt
- 36:49Speaker 1: like they would constantly be reported on, but it does
- 36:53Speaker 1: also feel like that has chilled out and mellowed over
- 36:57Speaker 1: the past few years. As you know, reporters have also
- 36:59Speaker 1: really that most of these guys either go unclaimed or
- 37:04Speaker 1: when they do get claimed, I think you still get
- 37:06Speaker 1: the chance as the team to like pull them back
- 37:08Speaker 1: and say, like, nevermind, we were just seeing somebody would
- 37:10Speaker 1: take the contract. Kim actually went through the process, landed
- 37:15Speaker 1: with the Braves, reuniting with Jerks, and Profar has already
- 37:19Speaker 1: popped at Tater now with the Braves obviously because he
- 37:22Speaker 1: was reunited with his bff Jerks and Profar. If you're
- 37:25Speaker 1: not familiar with this, I've got a link to it
- 37:27Speaker 1: in the show notes where these two Profar and Kim
- 37:31Speaker 1: were like best buds of all time when they were
- 37:35Speaker 1: on the padres together, they like hung out all the
- 37:37Speaker 1: time and they just really bonded. So honestly, in the
- 37:40Speaker 1: off season there was a lot of speculation that they
- 37:42Speaker 1: would both go to Atlanta after I think Profar signed first,
- 37:48Speaker 1: or it was the other way around, but essentially, like
- 37:50Speaker 1: you know, obviously, you know, it's only one way or
- 37:52Speaker 1: the other. So whereever one signed, the other was speculated
- 37:57Speaker 1: to go there because of them being such good friends.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Is this something you actually consider at all for pantasy,
- 38:03Speaker 1: like the soft side stuff. I know you've got all
- 38:06Speaker 1: your spreadsheets and all your algorithms set up and all
- 38:09Speaker 1: your interfaces scraping from Baseball savant and stuff, But do
- 38:13Speaker 1: you ever have like a press the Botton sort of
- 38:16Speaker 1: tago where like a happiness factor or something like that,
- 38:20Speaker 1: Or is this maybe warranting you thinking about developing that
- 38:25Speaker 1: after you've seen that tato that hasan Kim has hit
- 38:27Speaker 1: for the Braves.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd say, like to a degree, yes, that that
- 38:31Speaker 2: is there. Like I think anybody that's played competitive sports
- 38:36Speaker 2: knows that there's a huge mental aspect of it. And
- 38:40Speaker 2: you know, baseball is a grind. It is a grind.
- 38:42Speaker 2: And if you if you are not comfortable and you're
- 38:45Speaker 2: trying to hit one hundred mile hour fastball and you
- 38:47Speaker 2: just don't have the confidence, you don't feel like you belong,
- 38:49Speaker 2: like you're there's certain guys that are trying to prove
- 38:53Speaker 2: they belong, certain guys that know they belong. And if
- 38:57Speaker 2: you know you belong, you perform a lot better Because
- 39:00Speaker 2: you don't, You're not worried about keeping your job, You're
- 39:02Speaker 2: not worried about those things like if you're having fun,
- 39:04Speaker 2: like you're just you know, your teammate, you have a
- 39:07Speaker 2: bad day, your teammates carry like that goes a long way.
- 39:10Speaker 2: So I do think that there's an element of that.
- 39:13Speaker 2: That's why you sometimes see, you know, guys, let's call
- 39:16Speaker 2: it Andrew Vaughn, let's call it right right now. Sometimes
- 39:20Speaker 2: you just need that change of scenery and you just
- 39:21Speaker 2: need to feel wanted, in control and belonging. And you know,
- 39:28Speaker 2: I think we even said when Andre Vaughan got moved
- 39:30Speaker 2: was like, maybe this is what he needs, is just
- 39:32Speaker 2: a fresh start, and then I've still refuse to believe it.
- 39:36Speaker 2: But it's a whole different issue. So I do think
- 39:39Speaker 2: you're right, like I say, at the same time, but
- 39:42Speaker 2: like for hass On Kim, I actually like him regardless
- 39:45Speaker 2: of that. I think there's talent there and clearly the
- 39:49Speaker 2: Braves believe that because he's They took on his contract
- 39:53Speaker 2: which includes a mutual or not a mutual, a player
- 39:56Speaker 2: option for next year at a pretty hefty like sixteen million,
- 40:00Speaker 2: So he is their short stop next year, Like that's
- 40:04Speaker 2: who he is. They've already made that decision, and so
- 40:08Speaker 2: he's got to feel comfortable. And he's a good fielder,
- 40:11Speaker 2: he's he's a good hitter like and he's just never meshed,
- 40:15Speaker 2: never fit in Tampa. So I actually like this. I
- 40:18Speaker 2: think Young Kim high Sung Kim hast you On Kim
- 40:21Speaker 2: is a valuable, intriguing asset for for next year.
- 40:26Speaker 1: I think that's a good point. And I mean this
- 40:29Speaker 1: Braves team is going to be the easiest like comeback
- 40:32Speaker 1: pick of next year in terms of that's the entire
- 40:36Speaker 1: like minor league systems loaded with arms. As long as
- 40:39Speaker 1: they don't fall on their face out the gates again.
- 40:42Speaker 1: I mean they've been playing really well down the second half,
- 40:44Speaker 1: like they've been one of the best teams they end now, right,
- 40:47Speaker 1: So Iglesias one of the reliever of the of the
- 40:49Speaker 1: Month award in August, like I recall, yeah, actually surprised
- 40:54Speaker 1: he didn't win the Player of the Month, but yeah,
- 40:58Speaker 1: it's gonna be I think a great call out that
- 41:01Speaker 1: it's going to be really cheap now that Hasan Kim
- 41:03Speaker 1: looked so cooked in Tampa, but with the Braves, I
- 41:07Speaker 1: think you could see quite the renaissance for him. Okay, well,
- 41:11Speaker 1: we alluded a little bit to those Player of the
- 41:13Speaker 1: Month PC picks that we're going to be making here,
- 41:15Speaker 1: But before we get into that, we got a few
- 41:19Speaker 1: updates to the Baseball release calendar. Baseball Card release calendar,
- 41:23Speaker 1: check the show notes for that. We've just got a
- 41:25Speaker 1: little bit shuffling in terms of pinning Prison Pop back
- 41:28Speaker 1: in the schedule for mid September. They pushed back Bowman
- 41:32Speaker 1: Chrome to the end of September, and they also pushed
- 41:37Speaker 1: up Tops Tier one. I think it was originally supposed
- 41:39Speaker 1: to be nine thirteen, but it's now set for Wednesday,
- 41:42Speaker 1: release next week on nine ten. So that's a pretty
- 41:46Speaker 1: major high end product that people like just in terms
- 41:50Speaker 1: of what can be pulled. You're in year out from
- 41:52Speaker 1: tier one, but check out that Baseball card release schedule
- 41:56Speaker 1: if you're looking for any of those. We'll probably out
- 41:58Speaker 1: of all of them, have the biggest focus on Bowman
- 42:01Speaker 1: Krome going forward, just because it is a pretty major
- 42:04Speaker 1: tent pole release for the Baseball card calendar. With that,
- 42:08Speaker 1: we're gonna take a short break here and we'll be
- 42:10Speaker 1: back to talk about those August Player of the Month's
- 42:13Speaker 1: selections and make PC picks stick around. All right, Welcome back, everybody.
- 42:36Speaker 1: We are going to discuss August twenty twenty five Players
- 42:39Speaker 1: of the Month and MLB make some pod PC picks
- 42:43Speaker 1: for each of them. If you're not familiar with how
- 42:45Speaker 1: this works, what we do is we discuss who won
- 42:48Speaker 1: the Player of the Month for AL and NL Batter
- 42:51Speaker 1: of the Month, Picture of the Month, Rookie of the Month,
- 42:54Speaker 1: and then what we do is quote unquote pick some
- 42:56Speaker 1: cards for each player to put them into our PC
- 42:59Speaker 1: for the you can get show in the show notes
- 43:02Speaker 1: to we'll have links to one the article that announced
- 43:06Speaker 1: these players winning the Award two. You also have their
- 43:11Speaker 1: the link to all of our historic PC picks. So
- 43:14Speaker 1: with this we are going to be eclipsing the one
- 43:20Speaker 1: hundred and we're gonna be nearing in on two hundred
- 43:23Speaker 1: cards for this PC after this pod. So we've got
- 43:27Speaker 1: some fun ones in there from you know, classics like
- 43:30Speaker 1: show Heyo Tani all the way down to Isaac Collins
- 43:33Speaker 1: last month. So this month is another fun month if
- 43:36Speaker 1: you've if you're checking this out for the first time.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Typically what we do is we just pick another show
- 43:40Speaker 1: Heyo Tani or Aaron Judge card to put in because
- 43:43Speaker 1: they seem to win this like every month. This we
- 43:46Speaker 1: this month we've got some good variations, so we've got
- 43:49Speaker 1: some fun players to discuss, some fun cards to discuss. Again,
- 43:53Speaker 1: if you're looking for one stop shop of seeing all
- 43:56Speaker 1: these cards in action at once, go to rasball dot
- 43:58Speaker 1: com check out the post that goes with this pod.
- 44:01Speaker 1: They'll all be posted there, or you can also click
- 44:03Speaker 1: through those show notes and look at these one by one.
- 44:06Speaker 1: So let's start with the al This honestly totally caught
- 44:09Speaker 1: me off guard because I had no idea that he
- 44:11Speaker 1: was doing this through the other throughout the month of August.
- 44:14Speaker 1: But shay Leangaliers from the Athletics is your hitter of
- 44:18Speaker 1: the month. In the al he put up a six
- 44:21Speaker 1: to sixty one slugging percentage and a nine to sixty
- 44:24Speaker 1: eight ops hit eleven homers, including a five game or
- 44:29Speaker 1: a five hit game against the Nats on August fifth,
- 44:32Speaker 1: put up twenty two runs, and as the MLB dot
- 44:36Speaker 1: Com article says, he was Shay Bengaliers for sure. An
- 44:41Speaker 1: incredible month for him. Also another one of those dudes.
- 44:45Speaker 1: We might have to change the Jake Berger scale to
- 44:47Speaker 1: the shay Leangaliers scale in terms of the speed on,
- 44:50Speaker 1: savant but fun player all around. Some good picks from
- 44:54Speaker 1: his days with the Braves and the days with the Athletics.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Brew where did you go for the show pick?
- 45:01Speaker 2: I'm glad you said the leading thing of from the
- 45:04Speaker 2: Braves and the Athletics because that's where I tried to
- 45:06Speaker 2: go with my card because he was came over that
- 45:08Speaker 2: Matt Olsen trade. So I'm gonna go with I don't know,
- 45:11Speaker 2: we've actually dug into this set very much. I'm gonna
- 45:13Speaker 2: go with Leaf Trinity. So I'm gonna go with this
- 45:16Speaker 2: twenty nineteen Leaf Trinity Patch Auto, which is considered his
- 45:19Speaker 2: rookie card from Leaf. And the reason I love this
- 45:23Speaker 2: card is if you don't know, Shae lang Lears was
- 45:26Speaker 2: a Baylor Bear in college, which happens to share the
- 45:30Speaker 2: same color scheme as the athletics and so on the card,
- 45:34Speaker 2: he's in what appears to be unlicensed athletics gear, but
- 45:39Speaker 2: it's a patch from the Braves, and so it's just
- 45:42Speaker 2: like bringing the two together. And Leaf Trinity is one
- 45:47Speaker 2: of the best like unlicensed rookie patch auto cards out there.
- 45:54Speaker 2: You know, we have Inception, we have other things in tops,
- 45:56Speaker 2: but from an unlicensed like they are the kind of
- 45:59Speaker 2: the premium pat rookie patch auto card in the baseball game.
- 46:04Speaker 2: So great auto on card Auto available right now on
- 46:09Speaker 2: eBay for a whole forty three dollars, so not too
- 46:13Speaker 2: too hard to come by. But and check out Leaf Trendy.
- 46:16Speaker 2: There's kind of cool things. There's ones where they actually
- 46:18Speaker 2: write little messages. He has ones that says a go
- 46:21Speaker 2: Baylor Bears or number whatever draft pick from from twenty eighteen,
- 46:27Speaker 2: I believe, and so like really really cool fun set.
- 46:30Speaker 2: But I just I love the dynamic of having the
- 46:32Speaker 2: Braves patch and what appears to be like the prediction
- 46:35Speaker 2: of being athletics, I mean, and his you know, quote
- 46:38Speaker 2: unquote athletics gear actually the Baylor Bears. So definitely definitely
- 46:42Speaker 2: a fun like quirky and gimmick on this one.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Yes, I think this is a great pick. You can't
- 46:47Speaker 1: go wrong with these leaf trendys. They pick great patches
- 46:51Speaker 1: and great price point. I think actually that's probably gonna
- 46:54Speaker 1: be the theme of this August player at the month
- 46:56Speaker 1: PC picks is great price point.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Very I may have abuse that one or two times,
- 47:01Speaker 2: but still overall you're fair. So that's where I went.
- 47:05Speaker 2: Where did you go with Shaye Bengaliers?
- 47:08Speaker 1: All right? Well, I went to his rookie year of
- 47:10Speaker 1: twenty twenty three because he was in the league for
- 47:13Speaker 1: a couple of years there and then kind of took
- 47:15Speaker 1: a little bit before he actually got his Rookie of
- 47:18Speaker 1: the Year cards, or not Rookie of the Year cards,
- 47:20Speaker 1: his just rookie cards overall. So I'm gonna go to
- 47:23Speaker 1: twenty twenty three. I'm gonna go with tops cosmic chrome
- 47:28Speaker 1: just because it's a banana set and one thing that
- 47:32Speaker 1: I think we always love about the athletics when they
- 47:34Speaker 1: come up here. We did this with Nick Kurtz when
- 47:36Speaker 1: he's been in the PC picks recently. Is there are
- 47:39Speaker 1: fewer teams that look great in a color match than
- 47:42Speaker 1: the A's between the yellow and the green. So I'm
- 47:45Speaker 1: going with the green Space Dust Refractor of seventy five,
- 47:49Speaker 1: the one I found. It's only twenty five bucks to
- 47:51Speaker 1: get the one of seventy five, so a pretty great
- 47:54Speaker 1: deal and it's a cheap card overall. Just this. If
- 47:59Speaker 1: you need to go look at the website for one
- 48:02Speaker 1: picture that we've got connected to, I would go for
- 48:05Speaker 1: this one because it's like a combination of like a
- 48:09Speaker 1: Lisa Frank Space scene on a folder with a lava
- 48:13Speaker 1: lamp with just like green sparkle slapped all over it.
- 48:17Speaker 1: It's just fun and funky. And I'm sure this one
- 48:21Speaker 1: absolutely slaps in real life too, like the way that
- 48:24Speaker 1: the sparkles just kind of shoot off of these cosmic
- 48:27Speaker 1: chrome cards as well as like there's a couple of
- 48:30Speaker 1: layers of refractory you can see two between the sparkle
- 48:33Speaker 1: and some plus signs and all sorts of just gadgets
- 48:36Speaker 1: and features would look great, and honestly, any collection because
- 48:41Speaker 1: it's gonna pop the green with the athletics. That's where
- 48:44Speaker 1: I went for lingle years.
- 48:46Speaker 2: I love this pic. I think Cosmic Chrome is like
- 48:50Speaker 2: of all the things with kind of the you know,
- 48:52Speaker 2: the mini card boom of the last few years where
- 48:55Speaker 2: Tops try to make a little bit of a money play.
- 48:59Speaker 2: Cosmic Chrome is one of the great things that came
- 49:00Speaker 2: out of it, because that is just an unbelievable set
- 49:02Speaker 2: every year. The pictures are great, the artwork is great.
- 49:06Speaker 2: It is really fun. For everything that they did with
- 49:08Speaker 2: like a logo fractor or all Star foils or things
- 49:12Speaker 2: like that, they hit one here with Cosmic Chrome and
- 49:15Speaker 2: this is a great, great color match. And I love
- 49:18Speaker 2: your description the lava lamp because's exactly what I was thinking.
- 49:20Speaker 2: I looked at this card. It's got that lava lamp feel,
- 49:23Speaker 2: even though it's not labeled as a lava lamp card.
- 49:26Speaker 2: So great, great pick. It's all as in budget. These
- 49:30Speaker 2: are fun ones. We could actually put these in our
- 49:32Speaker 2: PC as opposed to pretty much everything else we've talked about.
- 49:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it does make it a little more affordable
- 49:37Speaker 1: when you're not talking Judge and Otani. But all right,
- 49:40Speaker 1: let's move on to the nlside. Because this is the
- 49:42Speaker 1: guy who did probably just edge out Michael Harris. We're
- 49:46Speaker 1: talking second basement Bryce Terrang from the Milwaukee Brewers. We
- 49:50Speaker 1: called this actually early on we noticed the change in
- 49:53Speaker 1: his profile in terms of him starting to really clabber
- 49:56Speaker 1: the ball. It hadn't really materialized until August. In August,
- 50:01Speaker 1: Terrang put up a three forty three three ninety eight
- 50:05Speaker 1: six ninety four slash line. That's a two hundred WRC
- 50:08Speaker 1: plus over one hundred and eighteen at bats or played appearances.
- 50:11Speaker 1: That is, ten of his seventeen homers that he's hit
- 50:14Speaker 1: this year came in August. Another one of those seventeen
- 50:18Speaker 1: already came in September. So he's found the powerstroke. Gonna
- 50:22Speaker 1: probably end up being the most valuable second basement when
- 50:24Speaker 1: it's all sudden done on the year. Currently up to
- 50:27Speaker 1: twenty four point two dollars on our player raider on
- 50:30Speaker 1: ras Bolt. So hopefully you listen to us early on
- 50:33Speaker 1: the season when we said this was a dude to
- 50:34Speaker 1: acquire because he's coming through in the clutch quite a
- 50:38Speaker 1: few baseball cars. Because he was a first rounder back
- 50:41Speaker 1: in twenty eighteen, was on the high school circuit and
- 50:44Speaker 1: so and so forth. So where did you go for
- 50:47Speaker 1: Bryce Terrang to put in the PC?
- 50:49Speaker 2: Oh? This, I had fun with this one. So I
- 50:53Speaker 2: went and I don't do a ton of research on
- 50:55Speaker 2: this one, but I went with the what was called
- 51:00Speaker 2: out as the Milwaukee Brewers Police first Edition baseball card.
- 51:06Speaker 2: And I've got to figure out where these came up.
- 51:08Speaker 2: It looks like a game giveaway or something like that,
- 51:10Speaker 2: but it is. Yeah, I think it's a game. It's
- 51:14Speaker 2: got to be a game giveaway like it, you know
- 51:16Speaker 2: that they give away a pack of cards thing. But
- 51:18Speaker 2: it's basically Bryce String as a comic, as part of
- 51:22Speaker 2: a comic book cover, and it's got him. It's like
- 51:25Speaker 2: if he makes me think of the flash back in
- 51:27Speaker 2: the day, he's got the speed. They nicknamed him the
- 51:31Speaker 2: brew blur on it. It's you know, it looks to
- 51:34Speaker 2: be Milwaukee issue number two, you know. And then he's
- 51:39Speaker 2: quoted on there and the comic book, you know, a
- 51:41Speaker 2: little quote bubble saying speed isn't how just how fast
- 51:44Speaker 2: you move, it's how fast you think. And then if
- 51:47Speaker 2: you want some fun, just read the back of the card.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Is unbelievable, just the way it talks about you know,
- 51:53Speaker 2: it's it's his quick reflexes and faster decision making him unstoppable.
- 51:58Speaker 2: Speed'sn't just his weapon, it's mindset. Like it's just this,
- 52:01Speaker 2: like somebody has so much fun making this card and
- 52:05Speaker 2: I've never seen it before, and it's just so quirky,
- 52:07Speaker 2: so gimmicky that it's you gotta have it. You got
- 52:11Speaker 2: to own this type of card. And there's probably no
- 52:13Speaker 2: value here, like it's on eBay for auction right now,
- 52:15Speaker 2: there's no bids, Like it's probably like a three dollars card,
- 52:18Speaker 2: Like you said, you get it as a giveaway, but
- 52:21Speaker 2: it's just just so fun. So I h we didn't
- 52:25Speaker 2: go to the miners this time. We just went to
- 52:26Speaker 2: a stadium giveaway.
- 52:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't tell if it's like a stadium giveaway
- 52:31Speaker 1: or like a separate sales sort of thing. If anybody's
- 52:34Speaker 1: got some background research on that, certainly drop us a line.
- 52:38Speaker 1: But this is a great pick. I don't think you
- 52:39Speaker 1: can ever go go bad with like kind of superhero
- 52:44Speaker 1: baseball card crossovers.
- 52:45Speaker 2: They always bang absolutely, so, uh, where one up me?
- 52:50Speaker 2: How can you one up the superhero? The brew blur
- 52:53Speaker 2: that is Bryce tering?
- 52:55Speaker 1: All right, Well, I'm gonna go. We just kind of
- 52:57Speaker 1: talked about this set recently because hit shelves and I'm
- 53:01Speaker 1: gonna go actually to twenty twenty five Tops Archive Signature series,
- 53:07Speaker 1: which if you recall, it's actually a product where you
- 53:10Speaker 1: get one card in your pack and that card is
- 53:12Speaker 1: a re covered like card from the wild, where they
- 53:16Speaker 1: bring it in, have the player sign it, restamp it,
- 53:19Speaker 1: put it back out into the wild. That's what this is.
- 53:21Speaker 1: But it's a Bryce Terring twenty twenty three Tops Finest
- 53:25Speaker 1: refractor that he is autographed, so it's the one of
- 53:28Speaker 1: one version from twenty twenty five. I think that the
- 53:31Speaker 1: eBay sellers being a little bit you know, optimistic on
- 53:36Speaker 1: what he's listened for thirty five hundred bucks. This is
- 53:39Speaker 1: probably like a three hundred dollars card, So good luck
- 53:42Speaker 1: to that eBay seller trying to move this thing. What
- 53:45Speaker 1: I love about it is one twenty twenty three Tops
- 53:48Speaker 1: Finest was a sick Tops Finus set. The geometric shapes
- 53:52Speaker 1: that they had going on in the background are just
- 53:55Speaker 1: really top notch, really pushed it to what Tops Finest
- 53:58Speaker 1: is in the modern day. But what I love for
- 54:01Speaker 1: this terrain card is Dude, he's swinging for the fences
- 54:04Speaker 1: back in twenty twenty three, like he wants it to
- 54:06Speaker 1: hit Taters even though he stole you know, fifty plus
- 54:09Speaker 1: bags last year. Came into this season and just announced
- 54:12Speaker 1: that he's going to be a power hitter now for
- 54:14Speaker 1: the Brewers. And maybe we should have seen it because
- 54:18Speaker 1: this card and a lot of his other rookie cards,
- 54:20Speaker 1: he is really swinging out of his shoes. Love the
- 54:23Speaker 1: high socks here for Bryce Terrang. Just an unbeatable card
- 54:27Speaker 1: if you're a Brewers and Bryce Terring fan.
- 54:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's a good call. A little pricing
- 54:33Speaker 2: probably a little optimistic on that, but the top finest
- 54:38Speaker 2: stuff just hits. It's just it's just so clean, such
- 54:41Speaker 2: good cards. That's the set that they do a really
- 54:44Speaker 2: really good job with. And if you did, if this
- 54:47Speaker 2: was the one card you gotta out of your arc, guys,
- 54:50Speaker 2: signs just hereious box, you're doing just fine. So I
- 54:53Speaker 2: think this is a good pick.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Yes, Okay, Well let's move on to those pictures because
- 54:59Speaker 1: you want to talk another surprise guy in the al
- 55:03Speaker 1: We have Baltimore oriole starter Trevor Rodgers, who was laughed
- 55:09Speaker 1: out of town pretty much when the O was traded
- 55:11Speaker 1: for him at last year's trade deadline. He's looked like
- 55:15Speaker 1: a cy young level pitcher. In August, he put up
- 55:17Speaker 1: a one thirty two ERA supported by a two to
- 55:20Speaker 1: eleven FIP, So it wasn't a joke because it came
- 55:24Speaker 1: with a thirty three to six K or K to
- 55:28Speaker 1: BB rate, which is immaculate for Trevor Rodgers in thirty
- 55:32Speaker 1: four innings, went four and over his five starts. This
- 55:36Speaker 1: is a guy who it still feels weird like rolling
- 55:39Speaker 1: him out every start because of those five starts, four
- 55:44Speaker 1: of them came against Philadelphia, Seattle, Boston. The last one
- 55:48Speaker 1: was at San Francisco. But I've got him in a
- 55:51Speaker 1: couple spots and it felt really strange rolling Rogers out
- 55:54Speaker 1: in every one of those starts. But man, it's worked.
- 55:57Speaker 1: It's looked fantastic. I going to be confounding to see
- 56:01Speaker 1: where he goes next year because it's just like a
- 56:05Speaker 1: command to control lefty with a huge ground ball rate
- 56:08Speaker 1: that that's not what he's ever been. So you're trying
- 56:10Speaker 1: to like analyze that all with the Baltimore of it all.
- 56:13Speaker 1: He's going to be a fantastic picture, I think, because
- 56:15Speaker 1: he's just figured something out. We haven't talked much about Rogers.
- 56:20Speaker 1: I want to get your take on him, because he's
- 56:21Speaker 1: just kind of the rise has been so New York.
- 56:24Speaker 1: We haven't even been like had a spot or an
- 56:27Speaker 1: opportunity to talk about it.
- 56:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's one of those odd things that like
- 56:32Speaker 2: we I think last year we talked about it so
- 56:34Speaker 2: much about like what Baltimore gave up and how like
- 56:37Speaker 2: terribly they lost that trade and all these things, and
- 56:41Speaker 2: this was like, wait a second, he's actually kind of
- 56:44Speaker 2: figuring things out. Like I don't know that it like
- 56:47Speaker 2: we can't fully buy into this, Like, you know, he's
- 56:50Speaker 2: had a lot of luck, Like, let's let's be frankly,
- 56:52Speaker 2: he's he's leaving on guys on base in the eighty
- 56:54Speaker 2: six percent clip, which is just unbelievable his baby of
- 56:57Speaker 2: two nineteen, Like, but the country has really really improved
- 57:01Speaker 2: this year, so like he seems like he's made some
- 57:03Speaker 2: adjustments there as well, lucky with home run for fly
- 57:06Speaker 2: ball rates and things like that. I think it's I
- 57:09Speaker 2: think he's on a hot streak overall right now, I
- 57:12Speaker 2: think is really what it comes down to. But you know,
- 57:14Speaker 2: I do think this is also one of those where
- 57:17Speaker 2: you know, I think he's made a little bit of
- 57:20Speaker 2: adjustment in his overall pitch mix. It seems to be
- 57:24Speaker 2: kind of playing out and like guys are not barreling
- 57:27Speaker 2: up as well, ex of velocities down a little bit,
- 57:31Speaker 2: Like it seems that he has matured as a pitcher.
- 57:34Speaker 2: But overall, I'm like, it definitely feels a little bit
- 57:37Speaker 2: more like a mirage. And so if you're talking like
- 57:41Speaker 2: a mid threes to four's e er a type of guy,
- 57:43Speaker 2: I could probably buy that. We're not talking about the
- 57:46Speaker 2: you know, low ones eer a kind of guy here,
- 57:48Speaker 2: so a lot there's there's a lot to like, but
- 57:51Speaker 2: I think that there's some regression coming coming. But for now,
- 57:54Speaker 2: ride the wave.
- 57:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so too. And actually those numbers were
- 57:58Speaker 1: even better than like side because he had six starts
- 58:01Speaker 1: and I missed the one on August first. In my
- 58:04Speaker 1: summary of the game log that was at Chicago. It's
- 58:07Speaker 1: actually his best game eight k's over eight innings. I
- 58:10Speaker 1: didn't start that one, which is part of it too,
- 58:12Speaker 1: because I was like, nah, h, like the wind was
- 58:14Speaker 1: going that day and he just like totally annihilated the Cubs.
- 58:18Speaker 1: So I think I'm probably gonna end up with spots
- 58:21Speaker 1: with him next year because I love just crafty lefties
- 58:24Speaker 1: like this, and even that he's a six foot five,
- 58:26Speaker 1: two seventeen guy kind of reminds me almost as like
- 58:30Speaker 1: early thirties Kershaw sort of profile, which if he can
- 58:34Speaker 1: be that, that's otherworldly.
- 58:36Speaker 2: For Rogers, I'm not quite there. I'll i'll if you want.
- 58:39Speaker 2: If we're gonna twist my arm, you can have them.
- 58:42Speaker 2: If you're gonna ca him Kershaw.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Sofy that with an early thirties Kershaw very heavily. Okay,
- 58:50Speaker 1: But let's get into some card picks here. So we've
- 58:54Speaker 1: got quite a few between Miami and not very many
- 58:57Speaker 1: on the Baltimore side. Where did you go?
- 59:00Speaker 2: Well, I went with a I'm gonna stretch it here.
- 59:04Speaker 2: You said Miami, you said Baltimore. I'm gonna stretch it
- 59:06Speaker 2: and go with his Pittsburgh Pirate version. Bear with me.
- 59:09Speaker 2: I'm going with his twenty eighteen Greensboro Grasshoppers choice card.
- 59:14Speaker 2: That's when he was playing for the Greensboro Grasshoppers out
- 59:16Speaker 2: in North Carolina, who are the Pirates affiliate. That's where
- 59:21Speaker 2: Connor Griffin is right now, but used to be the
- 59:24Speaker 2: Marlins affiliate and up until twenty nineteen when they moved
- 59:29Speaker 2: on from them the Marlins and linked up with the Pirates.
- 59:32Speaker 2: That's the fun of minor league baseball, if you ever
- 59:34Speaker 2: want to get into that. But Trevor Rodgers had his
- 59:38Speaker 2: choice twenty eighteen. What you might argue is kind of
- 59:41Speaker 2: a rookie card for the Greensboro Grasshoppers, and first of all,
- 59:46Speaker 2: is just the Grasshoppers. And I just love the stat
- 59:48Speaker 2: line in the back of his card twenty seventeen did
- 59:51Speaker 2: not play. It's not zero or anything, just didn't play.
- 59:57Speaker 2: And so, you know, I just thought it was fun
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: to dig in find one of those it's listening, and
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: the listening we'll have the show notes because that has
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: the back of the card, which is kind of fun
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: just listen for like twenty bucks, but like you can
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: get for two bucks on eBay.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: It is.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: It is not a crazy card anywhere. I just thought
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: it was really fun, like he has taken kind of
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: a winding journey, being kind of unknown with the Marlins
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: coming up, and I didn't want there's not much out
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: there in a Baltimore Jersey. He isn't really a Marlins guy.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: So I went with the Pittsburgh version, which is kind
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: of cheating because it wasn't actually the Pittsburgh version, but hey,
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: I could claim it, so it was fun.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: I like it. I think it's a great pick. Well,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: I did pick the one Orioles card that we had
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: because he hasn't had any cards in twenty twenty five yet,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: Trevor Rodgers, so if you want a card of him
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: in an Oriole's uniform, you've got to go to twenty
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: twenty four tops Chrome update. And we haven't put in
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: a negative refractor for a while. I thought this was
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: a good spot to put a negative refractor. These things
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: are super rare. The one I found is a dollar
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: fifty on eBay. That's a steal. So if you're an
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: Orioles fan, goes snatch this up. Because a great way
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: to commemorate this Trevor Rodgers August run for a couple
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: of bucks that this is a card that no negative
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: refractor should honestly be going for less than ten bucks
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: based on rarity, but it is right now, and I
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: thought it was fitting because coming into this season, all
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: of the stuff about Trevor Rodgers was negative and he's
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: kind of reversed. Course, if you're not familiar with what
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: the negative refractor is. It's essentially just like a negative
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: of a photo where you know, black is white, white
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: as black. I hope I said that right, But you know,
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: just a total negative, you know, flipping. So he's actually
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: in a white jersey, but it looks black on this
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: I've always loved these because they especially look fantastic in
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: Chicago white Sox cards. But let's go with the negative
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: refractor for Trevor Rodgers here for the PC.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: I like, we're just we're making we're putting in the
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: stories around I love to call the negative where his
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: season bent. Man, you're just on fire. And the other
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: thing is whoever took the photo almost eBay listing, like
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: tell me how good you are at taking photos? Because
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: they they managed to get like somehow this refractor is
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: showing green and fire, yellow and red like on the
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: day like that. They are selling this dollar fifty card absolutely,
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: and that's the dedication to the craft right there. So
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: love the pig, but love the picture even more.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the stands almost more than the card.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: So it's funny.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Let's go to the n L side for the picture
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: of the month, and this one it makes a little
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: more sense. You've probably heard of this guy before. Freddy
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: Peralta fastball. Freddy from the Milwaukee Brewers had a fantastic
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: month with a point three to two ERA over twenty
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: eight innings, went four and over his five starts thirty
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: four ks to twelve walks. Just an electric run also
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: looks great today against Philadelphia. I was watching that start
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: to wrap the series between those division leaders of the
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: Phillies and the Brewers and just shoved. I don't know
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: what it is. It's really hard to describe like what
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: Peralta is because none of the stuff looks great on
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: like the savant numbers you go to. It's like top
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: comparables and savant and it's maybe like some of the
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: worst collection of pitchers you've ever seen, but it keeps
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: working and he's part of his vibes base. He's got
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: a little bit of that like Pedro Martinez, Jerry Curle
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: look from the nineties that he's just been rocking and
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: the fastball has been cooking. So we'll see if the
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: Brewers label ride Peralta's armed through the playoffs. But before
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: we do that, we've got some PC make picks to
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: make another guy who kind of a enigmatic player I
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: would say coming through Maybe not it's not even the
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: right word, I would say, but maybe uh Mercutio not
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: to on right word either, but lesser known player coming
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: through the minor league system. So doesn't have a ton
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: of cards for the brewers. But we've got some good picks.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: Where'd you go?
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Well, while you get your the source out and I'll
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: talk about my pick, but I'm gonna go with the
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: twenty twenty five Top Series two in the in the
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Name relic card. These are one of one game word
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: cards and if you don't know what that means, what
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: it says in the name, it is a one of
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: one for every letter of the name. And so I
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: picked the letter P for Peralta because I thought it
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: was great to actually have the first letter if you're
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: going to collect only to get the F and the P.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: Get the initials right. But these are really great cards
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: because it you know, it's a massive patch and these
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: are the things that you like. Collectors dream of of
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: building the full set of the name plate essentially at
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: the back of the jersey and be able to spell
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: Peralta with all the one on ones and put that
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: on the wall it's just it looks amazing. So this
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: one sold for about two hundred bucks recently on eBay,
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: but it's just a great great patch. Also has the
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: pin stripes on it, So I've always wanted to have
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: a one of one in the name. I got a
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: few other in the collection, but they're always like the
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: you know, out of fifty and I'm like, uh, I
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: don't know. This is more of like a player Warn
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: jersey versus the game Warren jersey, Like you just the
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: guy wore fifty jerseys in ten minutes and then you
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: put them in cards type of thing. But these these
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: are absolutely game Warn and it's just they're cool cards.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: Yes, I totally agree, great pick that, especially in the
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: p you don't get the first letter very often. If
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: there's one to own, that's obviously the one.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: Yeah, It's like I was like, I got the picture,
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: I got the L It's like, maybe maybe not the
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: one to own.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: All right. Well for my pick, I did go with
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: another minor league card here, So we've been a little
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: hot on the minor league cards, but in a fun
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: one because in twenty sixteen, the Midwest League All Stars
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: had their own set put out, so the one that
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: I've got linked to in the show notes. It's a
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: twenty dollars version, but it's about a five dollars card
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: where you can find it. Just that the one that
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: I've got linked had the best photo of the actual card,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: and it's just kind of crazy to see little baby
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: faced Freddy PEARLTA. I don't know if I really would
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: have ever recognized that was him. He's pitching in a
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Wisconsin Timbler Ratler's jersey, which is I mean, the timber
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: Ratlers is just a supreme Supreme Minor League team name.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: I'm jealous that the Brewers have that in their system
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: because it just fits everything Milwaukee Milwaukee Brewers. What makes
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: this card kind of interesting. I've never seen a card
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: kind of design like this where you're almost waiting for
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: the patch auto to be slapped on it and it's
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: just missing. So, especially if you were an autograph chaser
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: out there and you are a Brewers fan and actually
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: can connect maybe with Peralta before a game, this would
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: be a great card I think, to have signed in person,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: because right in the middle there's just kind of this blay,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: this blank grayish spot that's faded and it's just it's
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: begging for Freddie per Alta's signature. So that's where I'm going.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: Twenty sixteen Midwest League All Stars Choice number sixty six,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: Freddy Peralta.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: I love that call. You're absolutely right. There's like a
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: perfect spot for the autocraft on this card. This is
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: the one you take to the fan fest or something
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: like that and you get a signed and it is
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: absolutely cool. And yeah, the Rattlers, the Timber Rattlers, that's
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: a that's a you know, it's up there with some
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: of some of these names. I mean, Greensboro Grasshoppers was
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: was pretty good too, So we've got some good minor
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: league names going tonight.
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and both are absolutely ones that, like John Oliver,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: would never change in a million years because they're perfect
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: between Grasshoppers and timber Rattlers. Okay, let's get into those rookies.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: The first one we got on the al side, we
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: just discussed his season probably being over. We're talking Roman
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Anthony from the Boston Red Sox. Part of the reason
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: he had really risen to the cream of the crop
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: for twenty twenty six drafts is because the August was fantastic.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: Six homers, twenty one runs, scored thirteen RBI two stolen
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: bases over one hundred and eighteen played appearances with a
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: three or four three to ninety five twenty slug that's
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: slash nine one WRC plus, which is I mean, that's
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: pretty elite stuff for a twenty one year old. I mean,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: I think that's something I gloss over all the time
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: whenever we talk Roman Anthony is just how young he is.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: This dude should be a junior in college, and so
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: he is tearing it up for the Boston Red Sox.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: We've got lots of choices here because he's been a
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: hot prospect for the past couple of years, was relatively
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: highly rated in terms of a second round comp pick
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: in twenty twenty two. So which direction did you go
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: for your Roman Anthony PC pick?
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: Well, we said the budget of friendly version, and then
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: we got to Romon Anthony and I messed up. And I,
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: first of all, I really wanted a color match red
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: refractor for Roman Anthony. And by golly and sorry, if
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: we ever said by Galli on this podcast, that's probably sorry.
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: My deep Missouri came out of me there. But you
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: can't find red cards for a Red Sox player. The
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: search algorithm does not like it, and so it took
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: me a lot lot of effort to find it.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: But I haven't thought about that Cardinals.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, Like let me find my red color match, Like, no,
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: it's in, it's in the team name. I have to
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: say like red minus socks. But then you lose all
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: this red sox labels like it doesn't work. But anyway, digression,
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: I went with his twenty twenty three Bowmen Chrome Rookie
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: Auto out of five red refractor. It is a great card.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: The red true red refractors always always pop and you
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: just had to get it. Even the miners, like, you know,
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: he's he's got the Boston jersey that the blues and
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: the reds. He's got his nice long sleeve under armor
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: kind of thing going on here with the red and
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: he's you know, it's the it's the on card auto.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: It is a little pricey list on eBay right now
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: for a good eighty five thousand dollars, probably a little
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: bit high on the ask is my my guess here,
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: But hey, you got the card, I don't. You can
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: set the price, but it is definitely definitely a fun card.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: Maybe buy it, crack it, it's a PSA get a
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: PSA ten with some of those subgrades there, but probably
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: not gonna get the get the return on this one.
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: So going with the out of five red refractur for
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Vermon Anthony. Break the bank, but don't don't pay that
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: price for it if you're if you're really going after it.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I do like the aggression that you're gonna break
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: a nine point five bgs to T'm gonna absolutely ding
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: that when you crack that open.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: Hey, they're all sub there were four subgrades of nine
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: point five's here. You can't go wrong. It's easy at
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: ten on ps A. I mean, that's gonna bump the
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: value from eighty five k tot least eighty six.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: I love it. Okay, well I'm gonna go with Look
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: at me, I'm venturing off into unlicensed ter.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: I'm so proud of you.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: I know. Isn't this amazing? Hopefully the link is not
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: quite working in the show notes, but this would be
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: one to definitely go to rasball dot com and check
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: out the post four. Because the one thing about Roman
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: Anthony is like the past couple of years, I think
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: Panini has really been slotting him into some premium products.
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: There's a lot of patch autos from National Treasures and
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Immaculate and other really high end products over the past
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: couple of years of Panini. There's great choices all around,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: and I found, I think one of my favorite patches
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: because the fun thing about the Red Sox is that
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: because of the very distinctive lettering that they use on
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: the front of their jerseys, you can kind of really
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: make out what it is and very clearly in the
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: one that I've got, it is a twenty twenty four
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: National Treasures Jumbo patch auto and it's the X. It's
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: just like one of the few letters you don't get
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: to see very often in the league. You know, you
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: run into it in the White Sox, but even there,
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: the AX is pretty buried in that Sox logo. You
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: just got a big hunk of the X on this
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: Roman Anthony card doesn't look too shabby in his unlicensed photo.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: Looks maybe a little bit more like a for the Reds,
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: but I'll just chalk it up to it being like
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: an old timey, early nineteen hundred s Boston Red Sox uniform.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: The other thing, too, I don't know if you notice
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: this when you're looking at Roman Anthony cards. He doesn't
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: sign all his own cards, like the auto moves around
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: a lot. So that's we had this actually a couple
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: of years ago a Jazz Chisholm where it's like very
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: clear that there was an assistant helping Jazz with his autos.
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: So I think I've got one of the real Roman
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: Anthony autos based on one else is out there. But
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: it's a player I would be careful with on the
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: autos because you can tell he's either mixing up his
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: auto every once in a while or he's getting some
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: help from people to tear through those autographs quickly.
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: This looks like be signing for like some bank loan, right,
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: it's just like there, I think there's an R in
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: there and maybe half of a Y in exactly if
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: you look at it, if you actually look at his
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: Bowman chrome model that I just picked out, I think
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: he added one letter in the middle and so like,
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: and I only know there's actually a letter which just
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: kind of like a little uh, you know, little mountain
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: like he's tried the A failed to cross it. Like,
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: so either he's regressed or you're right, somebody else is signing.
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: But it's it's it's it's almost to the point of
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: like just a straight line. So this isn't the Randy
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: Rose Arena type of a signature here, which we we
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: love on this podcast. So great, Card, I'm so proud
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: of you for going outside of the comfort zone into
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: the unlicensed because that's where you get some fun patches
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: and things like that. National Treasures is a great, great set,
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: but the Auto is a little to be desired for
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: romoent Anthony.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: All right, well, let's wrap up with our final player
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: that is from the NL Rookie and man, I'm so
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: proud of this guy because you and I were both
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: all over him coming into I mean, heated up a
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: lot over the season. I think we weren't, you know,
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: quite sure where he would land for the Marlins coming
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: into the year. But Jacob Marcy, hebewed on August first,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: so we've got a clean kind of spot from where
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: he started his first month in the big leagues. Three
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: point fifty two four point thirty six point twenty nine
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: slash with four homers, nine stolen bases, three triples, eleven doubles,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: twenty five RBI eighteen runs. Modern day Jacobe Elsberry essentially
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: is what Jacob Marcy has been as just a breakout
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: star for the Marlins. I mean, this is a guy
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: who I mean, I don't even next year is gonna
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: be really tough judging where he goes, because I'm glad
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: I'm not the top one hundred hitter guy who has
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: to actually place him, because never gonna have to touch
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: Jacob Marcy until he falls off a cliff, maybe because
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: he's not in waiver Wire territory anymore. Was the winner
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: of the NL Rookie of the Month. If you've got
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: anything else to add about his bunth, you can do that,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: but also make your PC pick here for Jacob Marcy.
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll just call it still out. You call it right,
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: Like I he's gonna He's so hard to rank because
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: like the pedigree wasn't necessarily there coming up like he was,
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: he was a well regarded prospect, but there's always like,
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: is he gonna hit the majors? Is the swing gonna work?
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: Is he is he gonna be? Like but like the
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: numbers have always been there, like all of a sudden
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: he gets here, and like this guy is good, Like
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: this guy can make his lightning, but he's also gets
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: kind of forgotten about in Miami a little bit, and
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: so it's gonna be fun to see where ultimately he lies,
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: because like you can dream on this profile, like you
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: could dream about him being a three hundred hitter, but
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: yet a few years ago he hit below the windows,
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: the line in the miners. Like it's a it's a
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: wide variety of outcomes, but man, if it hits, it
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: can be so valuable. But anyway, speaking of valuable, this
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: is the other side of the coin here, Ramon Anthony.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: You're going to out of five Bowman First Auto for
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: eighty five thousand. We're going with the printing plate from
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: twenty twenty two Bowman Draft for Jacob Marcy. The auto
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: signature slightly better still, it's pretty much just a scribble,
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: and we're going with the printing plate Magenta one of one,
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: which is available right now in eBay for one thousand dollars,
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: which is like one of the highest ones that you
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: probably can get an offer in there for half of
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: that and take it away. Because he most of his
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: stuff is in a Padres Jersey because he wasn't this
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: huge hype prospect. He's not in a lot of other sets.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: It's mainly that first Bowman that that is available, and
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: I think that's the Miami Marlin's card collecting contingent, I'm
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: not gonna say is the largest out there. And also
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: you get that that crossover. A lot of guys don't
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: like to have cards in you know, competitor jerseys things
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: like that, so much more available. But I do love
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: me a good printing plate, especially the the auto from
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: a Bowman first. There's probably not a you know better
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: card if you want to have one in that PC
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: of your favorite player, get a one on one of
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: your Bowman first auto, like yeah, and it's gonna probably
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: be a printing plate unless you get the super super fractor.
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: So love this one. Uh, very just simple, simplistic card,
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: but it's also nice the printing plates, like you can
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: see the images very well, like this one coming like
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: the black is usually the good one with the magenta
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: does show very well for Jacob Marcy here.
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I think this is a great pick because the
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: pink also kind of gives you a little bit of
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: a Miami Marlins flavor in terms of the color. And
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: on top of it, the backwards SD looks cool on
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: the printing plate because it like turns into a funky
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: geometric kind of pattern more than anything else, So you
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: can almost convince yourself it's just for like a minor
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: league stop that Marcy's batting right handed for, which is
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: a little odd on the printing plate. But I think
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: this is a great pick.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: All right, the initials out with the adds of the PC.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: What are you doing with Jacob Barci?
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: All right? Well, he obviously had a Topsnow card for
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: that crazy first month he had because he just also
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: went bananas a couple of games. One of them was
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: a seven RBI game on eight thirteen, so he got
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: a Topsnow card for that. That's when I'm picking up
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: going to the PC. But I'm gonna go with the
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: orange parallel because you know, Miami Marlins, the more colors
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: you can layer on the better. We kind of ran
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: into this when Connor Norby i think, won the Rookie
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: of the Month in back in April, and we realized
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: the same thing that like, essentially, if you take the
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: modern day Miami Marlin's uniforms and you just slap it
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: on a rainbow colored palette of a card, it looks fantastic.
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: So that's why I've picked the orange one here going
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: for sixty bucks, which is actually almost as expensive as
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: the card itself. Like to get the pre order of
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: this Top Snow card because it hasn't been released. Somehow
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: this person has the orange parallel, so might want to
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: look into how that happened. Tops. But the other pre
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: releases are like going for like twenty five to forty bucks,
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: So it's gonna be a hot card. Shows you kind
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: of I think where the card collecting community is gonna
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: take Marci in twenty twenty six because he's not gonna
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: have a Rookie card. That's indicated by this Top Snow
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: card because it's just a call up. If it was
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: if he was going to have a Rookie card and
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: update either Chrome update or Flagship update, it would have
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: an RC on it. So that's where I've gone with
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Jacob Marcy.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: Nope, great, great pick. There's there are many different chances
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: to go in the questions about the cards availability, but
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: that was just an iconic game that announced into the
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: national stage. Great picking. You're absolutely right, like that whole stadium,
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: the Marlins, the Jerseys, the stadium, like it's just colors galore.
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: They've just leaned into that Southern Miami Vibe, and you know,
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: you just got to appreciate that, like they've leaned into
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: being that team and it's it's fun, so great, great
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: pick and to your point, like that's actually not too
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: bad like this this this card could go up in price,
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: and so I kind of like that.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: All right, Well, let's wrap up our pod for this week.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: Brew Let everybody know where they can find you, read
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: your work and reach you run socials.

- 1:20:05Speaker 2: We are sticking with hitter profiles the rest of the year.
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: If the hitter rankings aren't as valuable with only a
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: few weeks left, so we will, you know, maybe call
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: out a few hitter rankings for next year as we
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: go through. But come out on Sundays and join the conversation. COOLi,
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: Where can folks find you?

- 1:20:30Speaker 1: to the wire because especially this time of the year,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: it's most important to really kind of play a week
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: to week look at those matchups. You can also do
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: that with some Rasball subscriptions. Get into the hitter Tron
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: the Stuminator help make those decisions down the stretch. If

- 1:20:51Speaker 1: we've got that in the show notes. We've got hats,
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: we've got t shirts, we got coffee mugs. That's starting

- 1:21:11Speaker 1: to wrap it up for this week, but we will
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: be back, same time, same place next week.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: See everybody,
