Latest / Fork U with Dr. Terry Simpson / Radium to Cleanses: Why We Still Fall for Bad Science

- 0:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: There is a long unfortunate history of
- 0:06people drinking things they absolutely shouldn't.
- 0:10From bleach to celery juice, from
- 0:12detox teas to silver colloids.
- 0:16It all started maybe a hundred years ago
- 0:19when the hottest wellness trend was
- 0:21radioactive water. Yep,
- 0:24people paid good money to drink radium
- 0:27and it was sold as a cure for fatigue,
- 0:30sexual dysfunction, aging, you name it.
- 0:37I'm Dr. Terri Simpson, your chief medical
- 0:39explanationist and this is Fork you
- 0:42fork University, where we make sense of the madness,
- 0:45bust myths wide open and shine a
- 0:48clinical spotlight on medical history's biggest
- 0:51mistakes. Today we're talking about glowing
- 0:53urine, crumbling jaws and the
- 0:56radioactive energy drink that almost got away with
- 0:58it.
- 1:04In the early 1900s, Murray and Pierre Curie
- 1:07discovered radium. At first it was hailed
- 1:10as a scientific miracle. It could shrink tumors,
- 1:13it could power machines, it glowed in the dark.
- 1:16What could go wrong? Naturally, the public
- 1:19didn't wait for peer reviewed studies. Radium
- 1:22quickly became the next big health fading.
- 1:26Companies bottled radium infused water
- 1:28claiming it could boost energy, stimulate
- 1:31digestion, cure arthritis and even
- 1:34enhance, well, let's say vitality in
- 1:37the bedroom. One of the most famous products was
- 1:40Radiodhor. It came in a sleek glass
- 1:42vial and promised perpetual
- 1:45sunshine. Each dose contained
- 1:48radium 226 and radium 228
- 1:51in actual drinkable doses.
- 1:54This wasn't microdosing. This was a one
- 1:57way ticket to your local radiation ward
- 2:00and people drank it by the gallon.
- 2:03Let's talk about Eben Byers. Wealthy
- 2:06Ivy league athlete,
- 2:08industrialist, socialite. After
- 2:11an arm injury, his doctor prescribed Radiathor to help
- 2:14with his general weakness. He loved it.
- 2:17He claimed it gave him energy, boosted his
- 2:20performance and improved his overall health.
- 2:23So he started taking three bottles a day
- 2:26for years. But then something
- 2:29started to happen. His teeth began to fall
- 2:32out, his jaw deteriorated,
- 2:34his bones turned brittle and started breaking
- 2:37and his skull developed holes.
- 2:40When the Federal Trade Commission finally got involved, he was
- 2:43literally falling apart. A reporter from
- 2:46the Wall Street Journal visited him and said the
- 2:49radium water worked fine until his jaw
- 2:52came off. By the time of his
- 2:55death in 1932, his body was
- 2:58so radioactive he had to be buried in a lead
- 3:01lined coffin. So what does that have
- 3:04to do with today? Well, let's look at the formula.
- 3:07Take a new scientific discovery,
- 3:10mix in vague health promises, add a
- 3:12dash of trust in personal testimonials,
- 3:16skip all the clinical testing, package it with
- 3:18buzzwords and celebrity hype. Sound
- 3:21familiar? Today we see the same
- 3:24cycle play out. Colloidal silver touted as a
- 3:27cure all even Though it turns people blue.
- 3:30Alkaline water, which ignores
- 3:32basic human physiology. Detox
- 3:35teas, which actually have no detoxifying
- 3:38ingredients. AI generated
- 3:41liver scams that paste my face on bottles and
- 3:44falsely claim that I endorse them. Yes, someone
- 3:47used my photo to market a fake liver detox
- 3:49supplement. By the way, they're all fake and claimed
- 3:52I supported it. I didn't. And it doesn't
- 3:55actually work because liver cleanses don't
- 3:58work. Your liver cleanses all by
- 4:01itself. So Radiothor may be
- 4:04gone and obvious that it was a problem,
- 4:07but the con and the basis of the con
- 4:10lives on. Just now it glows with
- 4:12artificial intelligence. Instead of radium, we have
- 4:15people calling themselves like the human biologist
- 4:18Dr. Gary Breca, who isn't a doctor
- 4:21who never graduated anything more than a bachelor's in
- 4:24biology degree and claims he can
- 4:27predict your actual date of death.
- 4:30So how did Radiothor get pulled off the market?
- 4:33Only after Eben buyers died and made headlines did the
- 4:36US government step in. The Federal Trade
- 4:39Commission began investigating the so called radioactive
- 4:42tonics and eventually new regulations from the
- 4:45FDA started banning untested radioactive
- 4:48health products. From that point on,
- 4:50radiation exposure limits became part of public
- 4:53health policy. And Radiothorpe, it became
- 4:56a cautionary tale in medical schools and law
- 4:59books. The irony? Radium does
- 5:02have real medical uses, like in cancer
- 5:04treatment, but it's carefully dosed,
- 5:07precisely targeted and medically
- 5:09supervised. Radium wasn't the
- 5:12villain. The villain was selling science without
- 5:15evidence and letting the public figure out the side
- 5:18effects one jaw at a time.
- 5:21We're still doing this. We're still buying
- 5:24natural products with no testing.
- 5:27We're still trusting influencers over
- 5:29physicians. We're still skipping the science
- 5:32for the story. So the next time someone
- 5:35says this tonic gave me energy, ask
- 5:38was it the product or was it Radiothor
- 5:41all over again?
- 5:47This episode was researched and written by me, Dr. Terry
- 5:50Simpson. You can find the blog posts and
- 5:52references@yourdoctorsorders.com and
- 5:554Q com and while I am a doubly
- 5:58board certified physician, I am not your
- 6:00physician. If you're tempted by a supplement,
- 6:03a tonic or an AI generated detox ad using
- 6:06my face, talk to a real doctor and
- 6:09a registered dietitian. Not your chiropractor,
- 6:12not a celebrity with a skincare line, and
- 6:15definitely not a bottle that cool glows in the dark.
- 6:18The episode was produced, distributed and all things
- 6:21audio by Simpler media and the pod got
- 6:24himself my good friend Mr. Evo
- 6:27Terra have a bright good
- 6:29but hopefully not radioactive week.
- 6:38Hey Evo. If a TikTok guru told you to drink
- 6:41radioactive water for gut health, Would you wash it down with
- 6:44a detox tea or just sign up for the next
- 6:46goop cleanse?
- 6:49>> Speaker B: Yeah, I'm gonna go none of the above. Uh, on that one?
- 6:52I think so. Oh, also, very fun and
- 6:55entertaining episode. Good.
