- 0:21and once again you're riding solo with me.

- 0:28wanted to get to this Yoshinobu Yamamoto news.
- 0:33Before we do that, I hope you enjoyed our last episode,
- 0:38Episode Four O 5, Our interview with Josh Spores.
- 0:40A good friend of mine former teammate got to talk some World
- 0:46Series just get you know talk talk about the the inner details
- 0:53of his experience, his run, his time with the team what that was
- 0:57like stuff stuff with you know the whole creed situation how
- 1:02that took over. Got to talk about what it was
- 1:04like closing out the World Series the final out the glove
- 1:07spike this and that. It was just a great conversation
- 1:10with him. Hope you enjoyed that.
- 1:11Hope you enjoyed our three O change up our bonus episode on
- 1:16flying. We had a number of you reach out
- 1:18to us talking about how you relate to this aspect of our
- 1:22conversation or that aspect of our conversation.
- 1:25I I I would venture to say that many of you are are well
- 1:30travelled. So yeah I would I would venture
- 1:33to say we were we were preaching to the choir with that hope to
- 1:37bring you some more of those coming up soon.
- 1:40Our content schedules a little iffy right now as you can
- 1:44probably tell I'm coming off a little something so bear with me
- 1:48and that I'm. I'm not feeling 100% but still
- 1:52wanted to get to this Yamamoto deal.
- 1:56This just literal ground breaking deal.
- 2:03So you know as I said appreciate you all listening to the last
- 2:08week or so of content it's. I know it's been a little up and
- 2:11down but glad to have you here. Appreciate you tuning in for
- 2:14episode four O 6. Let's get into it, Yamamoto. 12
- 2:21years, $325 million. Now, I know you.
- 2:25I know articles been floating around, tweets been floating
- 2:27around you. You know the detail, the
- 2:29majority of the details already. But what you probably didn't
- 2:36know, and I'm going to include myself in that.
- 2:41I don't think we knew that the Dodgers were gearing up for A1
- 2:50plus billion dollar offseason. Nate and I had been talking
- 2:55about it for at least a year, maybe longer.
- 3:01In regards to the fact that they were, I I think you could look
- 3:06at what they were doing and very easily come to the conclusion
- 3:09that, OK, this is a Dodgers team that's punting.
- 3:11They're going to give it a go in 2023, which they did.
- 3:14You know that. I mean, they, they put together
- 3:17enough of a team that that was worthy of competing in the
- 3:22postseason. But I think you could look at
- 3:24that team and know what they're capable of doing, what they've
- 3:27been able to do in the past and go, they're not putting out
- 3:29their best product. And it was because they were
- 3:32gearing up for Shohei. They go out, they get Shohei
- 3:35$700 million and you're thinking, OK, you know, they got
- 3:42their piece. That's that's what they've been.
- 3:44They've been kicking the can down on down the road for and
- 3:49they got their guy and then the Yamaha the Yamamoto sweepstakes
- 3:54get get churning a little bit that the stove gets a little
- 3:57hot. The rumors start floating around
- 3:59the the theme of the offseason this year has been incorrect
- 4:02reports. You get the incorrect reports
- 4:04floating around. Yeah, I mean I just I just found
- 4:08out the other day that apparently at and this flew
- 4:11under the radar for me. There was some ESPN reporter or
- 4:15writer or Co host or something. Maybe it was the Pat McAfee
- 4:19show. Maybe it was like a A.
- 4:21He was a guy on that show that was reporting that Yamamoto had
- 4:28signed a what was it? A nine year deal with the the
- 4:34Yankees at 910 year deal with the Yankees?
- 4:38It, I hate to say, but similar with the show, hey, and I'm not
- 4:47trying to rewrite. I'm not trying to go all
- 4:49revisionist history here, but it almost seems like it was too.
- 4:52It was too predictable. It almost seemed like it was too
- 4:56predictable. The Yamamoto was going to end up
- 4:59with the Dodgers. It was either, as we got down to
- 5:02crunch time, it was either going to be the Dodgers, the Mets or
- 5:07the Yankees, because I think those are the only three teams
- 5:11that were realistically willing to foot that kind of bill,
- 5:15especially for a guy who hasn't seen a Major League mound in his
- 5:19life. So he ends up with the Dodgers,
- 5:2312 years, 325,000,000. It pushes the Dodgers spending,
- 5:27as I mentioned this offseason, over 1 billion.
- 5:30And that's for two guys, Two guys.
- 5:37Now look, I don't know, I don't know who you're a fan of if you
- 5:45listen to this, I don't know who you're a fan of.
- 5:47But I would venture to say the team that you're a fan of was
- 5:51not in the sweepstakes for Yamamoto and safe to say,
- 5:56presumably not in the sweepstakes for Shohei.
- 5:57So this has been really just a spectator sport of an offseason
- 6:01for you, you just sitting back and and join the show.
- 6:05However I will say I have seen a lot, a lot of commentary from
- 6:13the, we'll call them fringe teams.
- 6:18We'll say what I mean. The more I'm hearing about what
- 6:24the Red Sox approach this off scene is I'm I'm starting to
- 6:27learn more and more in into the camp that we were never really
- 6:30in on the on Shohei or Yamamoto sadly.
- 6:35But teams that were were possibly interested in acquiring
- 6:42Yamamoto, obviously at us at a lesser clip, a lesser bill than
- 6:46the Notani. A lot of a lot of commentary
- 6:50from fans of those teams saying you know this guy but before he
- 6:57signed with the Dodgers you know this guy is going to be
- 6:59electric. Whoever lands this guy, I mean,
- 7:04talk about a A punch in the arm, a shot in the arm for that
- 7:10rotation. Whoever this guy ends up with.
- 7:12And then he sides with the Dodgers.
- 7:14And now all of a sudden we're rewriting the script?
- 7:16That's been my biggest take away from from this, from the
- 7:19Yamamoto ordeal that has now reached its conclusion.
- 7:25Desert Desert Dolier on Twitter actually put out a great tweet
- 7:29the other day. He said everyone wanted Ohtani
- 7:32till he signed with the Dodgers. Now it's more like why pay that
- 7:35much for DH only? Everyone wanted Yamamoto till he
- 7:38signed with the Dodgers. Now it's more like why pay that
- 7:40much for a guy who has never pitched, has never pitched in
- 7:43the MLB? I don't.
- 7:49I don't know how many more times I can tell you this offseason.
- 7:56I feel like more than any other offseason has peeled back the
- 8:02layers has revealed to us just how hypocritical baseball fans
- 8:09can be. And this off season has also
- 8:14showed us just how worthless baseball reporters are.
- 8:19But that's that's that's besides the point.
- 8:23My point about the the the fans of these teams though I is it
- 8:32takes me back to Bryce Harper and not to Not to just
- 8:36unnecessarily loop Bryce Harper in this conversation, but if you
- 8:39remember, I put out a tweet a while ago and I've referenced it
- 8:44multiple times on here, but I put out a tweet a number of
- 8:47years ago. It was when he was looking to
- 8:48sign his his long term extension to get his back.
- 8:51And I said nobody's going to want Bryce Harper until their
- 8:59team signs him and then they'll be first in line to buy his
- 9:03jersey. He signs with the Phillies.
- 9:05He goes out the next 48 hours and sets the the jersey record
- 9:09for most jerseys sold within a 48 hour span.
- 9:14The same kind of thing is happening with Shohei and with
- 9:16Yamamoto. Everybody wanted this guy.
- 9:21It it's it's a little bit different, but it's the the
- 9:23sentiment is the same. Everybody wanted this guy or
- 9:28these guys until they saw that the Dodgers were the only team
- 9:34that was really willing to to foot the bill.
- 9:38And now the narrative is flipped, the script is flipped,
- 9:41and we're just burying these guys.
- 9:43We're burying Yamamoto saying, well, he's never, he's never
- 9:46seen an MLB mound. How reliable can this guy really
- 9:49be? There's really only one
- 9:51situation, really only one outcome here, and it's that he's
- 9:56going to be a bust. Because what other scenario
- 9:59would you would you see playing out with the guy that's never
- 10:02pitching Major League Baseball and you signed up for 12 years.
- 10:05That's that's what people are saying now.
- 10:09That's what people are saying now.
- 10:11But yet we were waiting on pins and needles waiting for this guy
- 10:16to sign. Similar to show hey, with the
- 10:20track in the flights track and restaurant reservations, people
- 10:23wanted to know, is this guy going to a Los Angeles Rams game
- 10:29If you if the guy is going to be a bust, why do we care As
- 10:31baseball fans? Let me ask you that why do we
- 10:33care? We shouldn't if if that's how
- 10:38you if that's how you think about them or if that if that's
- 10:41how you view them, we shouldn't care about things like that.
- 10:44But it just goes to show you how hypocritical baseball fans can
- 10:48be and I know I'm going to include myself in that.
- 10:50I know what times I can be like that.
- 10:51But I think as somebody who realistically didn't really view
- 10:57my team necessarily as a as a a realistic suitor, I was able to
- 11:03sit back and and watch this play out with fans from the Mets, the
- 11:07Yankees so on and so forth. Now I mentioned the Mets and
- 11:13Yankees and that's and I'm and I talk about teams that were
- 11:17realistically on the sky. Should the should the reporting
- 11:23be accurate. What we know is that the Dodgers
- 11:27obvious their their final offer was 325.
- 11:31The Mets final offer was 325 and the Yankees final offer was 300
- 11:37million. Now my question for the Yankees
- 11:44is, and I and I read that they were quoted as saying that they
- 11:51felt it was a compare. I want to, I want to say the
- 11:56word they used was competitive, a competitive and fair offer.
- 12:03If you go through the process of acquiring Juan Soto and you get
- 12:10the wheels turning on the narrative for your team, that
- 12:15you're trying to rebuild the image of the Empire, to restore
- 12:19that image, to get your team back to a A, a place in the game
- 12:24where you're revered, you're respected, you're feared.
- 12:28Because quite frankly, I don't. You're you're not there yet.
- 12:32You're you're closer, but you're not there yet.
- 12:37Why are you not blowing every other team out of the water?
- 12:43I genuinely, I I'm, I'm trying to wrap my head around that.
- 12:47Why are you, if you're the Yankees, why are you not blowing
- 12:49every team out of the water? Because honestly, my opinion, my
- 12:54honest humble opinion is that the Mets, regardless how much,
- 12:59unless they threw 500 million at this guy, that honestly probably
- 13:03500 million would have been the threshold for Yamamoto to look
- 13:06at that. And like, I mean, I guess, like,
- 13:09I'm not going to do much winning there, but how can you say no to
- 13:12500 million? The Mets with their realistic
- 13:19offers again short of 500 million, were never in my mind
- 13:22going to be a serious contender in the sweepstakes.
- 13:27Because it's been documented that you're punting on this year
- 13:32already. It's been leaked.
- 13:35It's been reported. It's it's very clear based on
- 13:39the construction of your team right now that you're not
- 13:41serious about 2024. So how is that how is that a a
- 13:53point of bargaining If you're the Mets, how can you, how can
- 13:56you rest back on your laurels of essentially nothing that you've
- 14:03accomplished over the last number of years?
- 14:04How can you sit back and think that that's an an attractive
- 14:08destiny? How can you think that you're an
- 14:09attractive destination for guy like Yamamoto?
- 14:14Because I don't know. I don't know who all is in his
- 14:16camp. But I would venture to say that
- 14:18the people that are his runners, if you will, the people that I
- 14:22would imagine he already had over here in the United States
- 14:26doing, doing their research, running the numbers, this and
- 14:29that. I'm sure they caught wind of of
- 14:33what happened with the Mets in in their situation this year,
- 14:36and they probably heard Yikes. The Mets are not necessarily
- 14:40serious about their situation for 2024 and possibly even 2025
- 14:46depending upon what they do over the next calendar year.
- 14:52So unless you're willing to throw half a billion dollars at
- 14:54this guy, which I I don't think even Steve Cohen would do as
- 14:58good as I think Yamamoto is, is hopefully going to be for the
- 15:02Dodgers and for baseball. The reality is he still hasn't
- 15:07thrown a pitch in Major League Baseball.
- 15:10So I don't think the Mets were ever going to throw anything
- 15:13stupid at Yamamoto. So with that said, if you're the
- 15:19Yankees, I I think I would venture to say that a a vast
- 15:26majority of people probably sell Yankees as favorites.
- 15:30And I know I mentioned that it was.
- 15:32I was talking about it being a little predictable with the
- 15:34Dodgers and I only say that just from the sense of of resources
- 15:38of for money from a markability standpoint.
- 15:44A the the ability that they have to sell him on LA, especially
- 15:52now that they have show. Hey, I mean a match made in
- 15:55heaven if there ever was one, bringing both of those guys on
- 15:59board they. If you're the Yankees you just
- 16:03would have had to have blown that offer out of the water
- 16:06because I, I, and I don't think I don't think you have.
- 16:09You would have to spend $500 million like the Mets probably
- 16:12would have to to overcome the barrier of not necessarily being
- 16:16an attractive destination right away.
- 16:19Because I think if you're the Yankees you could easily and I'm
- 16:22sure Cashman, Cashman and whoever else was was at the
- 16:26table for those meetings. They they could make very clear
- 16:30like look we well there's a vision here it's it's you know
- 16:33it's been a little bumpy. We haven't, we haven't exactly
- 16:36done what we set out to do over the last handful of years, but
- 16:42there are there are pieces in place.
- 16:44We have guys locked down and we want to add you to that list and
- 16:49we want you to be a part of this.
- 16:52The the sales ability of that is is pretty easy in my mind.
- 16:58But you you just would have had in my mind to spend a little bit
- 17:01more than what the Dodgers were willing to do.
- 17:04But you didn't even match them. Forget about exceeding what they
- 17:10they offered. You didn't even match them.
- 17:12And it wasn't even it wasn't even necessarily close $25
- 17:17million. I don't know.
- 17:22What we do know, though, is that this, this contract is the
- 17:26largest deal for pitcher in years and value in Major League
- 17:29history. Ironically, it passes Garrett
- 17:35Cole's contract of guaranteed money of 324 million passes out
- 17:41by 1,000,000, which is just, you know, that it's a little poetic.
- 17:47And I'm not, I'm not trying to like not trying to kick the
- 17:52Yankees while they're down because I'm in no place to do
- 17:54that. And I'll be the first to admit
- 17:56that. I just think it's.
- 17:57I just think it's a little ironic, a little funny.
- 18:01The Yamamoto gets the largest contract and guaranteed money
- 18:08for a pitcher. And who does he top?
- 18:11Gare. Cole.
- 18:13That's all I'm going to say. I just think it's.
- 18:14I just think it's funny. That's all the other things that
- 18:17we do know about Yamamoto and we've We've mentioned these
- 18:19before, but just in case you need a little refresher, he's
- 18:21won three consecutive MVP awards and Salamore awards.
- 18:25It's the MP BS equivalent of the Cy Young and over 820 and a
- 18:30third innings. He's posted A165 and struck out
- 18:33nearly five times as many hitters as he's walked and
- 18:36allowed one home run every 28 innings.
- 18:40I know, I know. A thing that a point of
- 18:45discussion that we've had on this podcast before is the the
- 18:52the translation of Japanese baseball to the major leagues
- 18:56and how we can safely say based on the sample size that we have
- 19:03over the last go back however many years you want to go, you
- 19:06want to talk. Post 2000, the gap has narrowed
- 19:14drastically, which means that the concern for that translation
- 19:22of skill and ability to hang in a 162 schedule year after year
- 19:31has it's dwindled. That gap is not nearly as much
- 19:36of A concern anymore and we've we're seeing it through guys
- 19:39like Show. Hey, and I think if you're a
- 19:45Dodgers fan you should be able to rest easy.
- 19:48One, because you essentially have like a super team right now
- 19:51for one that that's just a an aside.
- 19:54But two, if there was a concern about Yamamoto you, if you
- 20:00again, if you're a Dodgers fan and you're hearing all these
- 20:02people talking about, well, he has no experience.
- 20:06How can we really know if he's going to be capable of, of doing
- 20:10what he did over there, over here?
- 20:16Look, the reality is we don't know.
- 20:18We don't know for sure. But I think you can you can look
- 20:24at this and go. This isn't like 30-40 years ago
- 20:30where maybe the gap is a little wider.
- 20:33We're at a point now where I think the Yamamoto is going to
- 20:36come over here. It it may there there may be a
- 20:39little bit of a learning curve because you always you you hear
- 20:43so much about their routines and their regiments and their
- 20:48training and their schedules and how it is a little bit difficult
- 20:53to. I mean think about as just like
- 20:55an average everyday citizen, a non Major League Baseball
- 20:59player. Think of how how much of a
- 21:01challenge it would be for you to pick up your life where you're
- 21:04at right now with all your rhythms, all your routines, all
- 21:07your regiments, your schedules, your preferences.
- 21:10You. You uproot that and you go
- 21:12overseas and you get dropped in the middle of wherever and they
- 21:17say, OK, be the same person that you were back home.
- 21:22Like that's. There are some challenges that
- 21:24come with that. I don't care if you're getting
- 21:25325 million, I don't care if you're getting 700 million if
- 21:28you're show. Hey the the money to me isn't a
- 21:32factor. It the reality of it is that
- 21:34that's a challenge, especially a younger guy like Yamamoto is
- 21:40there's still some learning to be done.
- 21:41So I I think he'll be able to come over and give you quality
- 21:50start after quality start. I think it would be naive to
- 21:54think that he's going to come over here and just light the
- 21:57world on fire. But the beautiful thing about it
- 22:01is, is there's potential for that because of how good he is.
- 22:07So with that said we will see how that translates.
- 22:12But I'm as just a general baseball fan.
- 22:16I I I think I'm safely at the point where I'm past the window
- 22:20of concern for for situations like this where you get a guy
- 22:23that again never seen the mound in Major League Baseball.
- 22:28I think he'll be fine. I mentioned, I mentioned a super
- 22:32team. I use that phrase.
- 22:33That phrase has been thrown around a lot in the last 4872
- 22:38hours. Look, I I don't want to pretend
- 22:44that I haven't just been glazing the Dodgers for the last week,
- 22:52week and a half. They they have done what a lot
- 22:58of baseball fans wished their team did.
- 23:02Identify an asset. Go out, do what you have to do
- 23:07to acquire said asset, whether that's money, whether that's
- 23:12trade. They just do it.
- 23:17They don't. They're not thrown in these
- 23:19articles haphazardly as an interested party.
- 23:25They're the front runner of for these, for these free agents,
- 23:32for these top name elite players in the game, and there's a lot
- 23:38of envy that comes with that around baseball.
- 23:41And people don't want to admit it, but they look at the
- 23:43situation that the Dodgers are in and they would they just want
- 23:46to bash it. It's the same thing depend upon
- 23:49how old you are. You might remember it the same
- 23:54way with the Yankees back in the day, where the reason people
- 23:58hated the Yankees is just because they would go out and
- 24:00buy player. They'd buy the best talent and
- 24:04they would go out and win. And people hated that.
- 24:07The difference is, at that point in time, the Yankees were one of
- 24:13the few teams willing to do that.
- 24:15Now more teams have more resources.
- 24:19There's more money involved that a team like the Dodgers is.
- 24:28There's potential for the A-Team like the Dodgers to be a little
- 24:31bit deluded among the field because these you have these
- 24:36billionaires who have the money but they they want to keep it
- 24:43like it's it's early 2000s Major League Baseball.
- 24:47They want to keep it that way they want it to be well let's
- 24:50let's just look at the Dodgers and and point fingers at them
- 24:53for ruining the game. I'm I wouldn't be surprised if
- 24:57these owners are the ones that are.
- 25:00I'm I'm surprised they don't have, like, they don't have like
- 25:06aliases or pen names or whatever that they're penning these, that
- 25:10they're writing these reports under talking about how the
- 25:13Dodgers are bad for baseball because it makes them look bad.
- 25:17It makes these owners who have just Boku bucks that don't want
- 25:23to spend it and they want to rally the support of their fan
- 25:27base through whatever means necessary to look at a team like
- 25:32the Dodgers. And you know a team like the
- 25:34Mets in in in years past, they want to look at teams like that
- 25:38and go it's killing the game, it's killing the sport.
- 25:46Yes, they may have a quote UN quote super team right now but
- 25:52don't be upset at the this is a A2 prong discussion here.
- 25:57One don't be upset at the Dodgers for doing what you wish
- 26:02your team did. You wish your team had Ohtani.
- 26:06You wish your team had Yamamoto. Because remember, don't You
- 26:12can't be upset at the Dodgers for spending money on Yamamoto
- 26:15because it's not your money. Stop being upset.
- 26:17As baseball fans, we need to stop being upset at the money
- 26:20that these owners and these front offices are spending on
- 26:23guys because it's not your money.
- 26:25Stop being upset. Stop acting like it's coming out
- 26:28of your wallet. You're acting like this.
- 26:29These Chipotle employees that act like the grains of rice that
- 26:34they're putting in your bowl are coming out of their paycheck.
- 26:38Stop the other The other element of this two prong discussion is
- 26:46have we not learned anything? Look, the the purpose of this
- 26:52conversation is to applaud what the Dodgers are doing, but also
- 26:59present to you, the listener, a little bit of cautious hesitancy
- 27:06to jump into thinking that the Dodgers are chalk for a title in
- 27:112024. Because have we not learned
- 27:13anything from the last? I mean, you you could say ever,
- 27:21but just for conversation's sake, the last handful of years
- 27:24where you have a team like the Padres, you have a team like the
- 27:28Dodgers. I mean pre 2023, obviously, or
- 27:32pre 2023 offseason Dodgers where they just look like a shoe in
- 27:38the Padres, look like a shoe in the Mets, look like a shoe in.
- 27:42They're everybody's favorite to win the World Series on opening
- 27:45day. How?
- 27:48How do those things pan out? You can have all the talent.
- 27:51You can have all the names. You can have the manager that
- 27:54you think is the the fix, the solution, the guy that you think
- 27:59will best lead your team to a title.
- 28:02You can have all the contracts, you can have millions and
- 28:06millions, half a billion dollars tangled up in in guys that are
- 28:11running around on the field out there for you.
- 28:13And how does it pan out? It doesn't.
- 28:17It doesn't. And even though, even though you
- 28:23have Shohei and Yamamoto as the Dodgers, in addition to guys
- 28:28like Mookie, Freddie, Barker, Bueller, guys like that, it
- 28:34doesn't mean that they're going to win the World Series.
- 28:36And that's just the reality of it.
- 28:38Nobody knows what's going to happen next year.
- 28:44And you say, Kyle, come on, look at that line up and tell me that
- 28:50the Dodgers aren't winning the World Series in 2024.
- 28:55Look at look at the 2023 Diamondbacks and tell me that
- 29:01you thought they had any chance of making the World Series.
- 29:08It's it's a revolving door. Each year of there's a team that
- 29:13we think is capable of running the table, and more times than
- 29:20not, they put together a quality campaign.
- 29:25But you got to get through the gauntlet of October, and if you
- 29:28look at the Angels, who had Shohei Otani and Mike Trout, you
- 29:36saw the Angels craft a team that didn't even make the postseason,
- 29:40much less win a World Series. Mike Trout has made it to the
- 29:46post. I mean not to not not trying to
- 29:49throw strays at the Angels here, but Mike Trout made it to the
- 29:52postseason once, and I know that the 2024 Dodgers are different
- 29:59than the the the late twenty 10s and early twenty 20s Angels.
- 30:06I know that. But just because a team acquires
- 30:12a name or names in this scenario, it doesn't mean that
- 30:18they're chalk. I I'll say it till I'm blue in
- 30:21the face. Literally nobody knows what's
- 30:24going to happen from year to year.
- 30:26And it's foolish. Like we we can sit there and and
- 30:30make our predictions, make our picks, have have fun with it,
- 30:33say oh, it's Sharpie, this and that.
- 30:36I've said that before and I've looked like an idiot because
- 30:39that's how baseball works. Nobody, and I mean nobody.
- 30:45There may be like a screenshot of somebody putting in a parlay
- 30:49on Opening Day last year that had the Rangers and the the D
- 30:52backs in the World Series, probably.
- 30:55But realistically, percentage wise, that percentage of people
- 31:02that thought the Rangers and the Diamondbacks were going to make
- 31:04the World Series started with a zero.
- 31:06It may have been .0000001, but that percentage started with a
- 31:13zero. And for good reason, because it
- 31:17shouldn't have ended up that way.
- 31:19But that's baseball. So all that to say, don't don't
- 31:25sharpie the pot the the Dodgers in for World Series title.
- 31:29But on the flip side, give them the respect that they're due.
- 31:34You should be happy as a baseball fan with what the
- 31:37Dodgers are doing. It's better for baseball.
- 31:40Stop with the salary cap nonsense.
- 31:48How is a baseball fan? Is that your answer for this?
- 31:54You want teams to be cut off from going after guys like this?
- 32:03You would rather your cheap owner be able to sleep easier at
- 32:10night knowing that he doesn't have to spend as much to compete
- 32:15or to attempt to compete with other teams in the league.
- 32:18You want him to be OK with going all right, we've got some of
- 32:22these teams at Bay now. We don't have to worry about
- 32:24them just running away, spending a billion dollars in an
- 32:27offseason. Why are you siding with your
- 32:30cheap owners? Be better.
- 32:32As a baseball fan, you should be looking at what the Dodgers are
- 32:35doing and applauding it. You should be looking at what
- 32:41the Braves are doing. I mean, completely different
- 32:44situation, but you should be looking at what the Braves are
- 32:48doing. Again, little different
- 32:51approach, but they identify their assets and they lock them
- 32:55down. And I know I've, I've railed on
- 32:58the Braves time and time again for that, but they have some
- 33:03sort of black magic down there. I don't know what they're doing,
- 33:06but it comes down to identifying their needs, identifying what
- 33:10they want and securing them and giving their team the best
- 33:16chance to win a World Series, not just for one year, but for a
- 33:21window of years. And so that's what the Dodgers
- 33:25are doing. That's what the Braves are
- 33:26doing. How you can look at your owners
- 33:31of. If you're a fan of these these
- 33:34poverty franchises. How you can look at your owners
- 33:37and go, hey, I'm gonna come to your defense.
- 33:42We need to. I'm gonna, I'm gonna.
- 33:44We as fans of the Fill in the blank team, we're gonna continue
- 33:49to contribute to the narrative that we need a salary cap.
- 33:54We need a salary floor. We need to weed out.
- 33:57This is me talking. We we need a salary floor.
- 34:00We need to weed out the owners who are unwilling and
- 34:06uninterested in putting a even remotely competitive product on
- 34:12the field because they're just trying to turn a profit.
- 34:17The reason? If you're if you're a fan of the
- 34:22Reds, if you're a fan of how to, say, the Red Sox right now and
- 34:28you're feeling frustrated because you just don't feel like
- 34:32your team is being put in a position to win, to compete, to
- 34:36be even entertaining, at the very least, forget being
- 34:39competitive. Like, I just want guys that have
- 34:43recognizable names. That's that's all I'm asking.
- 34:48If you're feeling that kind of frustration, it's not because of
- 34:55what the Dodgers are doing. Don't point it.
- 34:57Don't point your fingers at the Dodgers and blame the Dodgers.
- 35:02It's because you're a fan of a team that has no interest in
- 35:09adopting even a fraction of that approach, and that's sad.
- 35:14You don't want that. Baseball isn't better off with a
- 35:18salary cap. You need a salary floor.
- 35:20You need to require these owners to actually spend the money that
- 35:27they have. Like if you're only acquiring a
- 35:34sports franchise, to add it to your portfolio, Get out of the
- 35:38game. I'm not saying you have to go
- 35:43out and spend a billion dollars in an offseason, but like maybe
- 35:50a million. Change the B to an M and that is
- 35:57that. Is that too much to ask?
- 35:58There are literal teams this offseason who have not spent a
- 36:01dime. What are we doing?
- 36:08It's almost the end of the year and you haven't spent a dime.
- 36:15I I just don't understand it. I never will understand it and I
- 36:22can. I can sit here and acknowledge
- 36:24and admit that I'm no business owner.
- 36:26I and in a billionaire sense I'm no, I'm no money making mogul.
- 36:33I'm I don't have a portfolio that I'm trying to add various
- 36:36sports franchises to. But just as a as a regular old
- 36:44baseball fan I can look at this and it's pretty black and white.
- 36:48It's pretty simple. If you're not interested in
- 36:54investing and improving and presenting a competitive
- 37:03product, why are you doing it? You could do that in just about
- 37:08any other industry and get away with it.
- 37:11It doesn't work in sports. People care too much on the
- 37:15outside. And when I say on the outside,
- 37:17I'm talking fans, we care too much.
- 37:21We spend too much time, too much money, too much energy.
- 37:25We invest too much to support a team, an organization, a
- 37:32franchise, whatever it may be, to not have that reciprocated.
- 37:38That's all we ask. We just want it.
- 37:40We just want the favor returned. Like we'll gladly hand over our
- 37:44money. Like they talk.
- 37:45Like the that monologue and Field of Dreams.
- 37:48We'll gladly hand over our money without even thinking about it,
- 37:53but all we ask is that as these, as an owner, that you just
- 37:58return the favor bare minimum. Again, we're not talking about
- 38:04Yamamoto. We're not talking about Ohtani.
- 38:07But at the very least like can you just go out and get a a
- 38:13regular guy spend maybe a few cents That's all we ask.
- 38:22All I know is though my friends I'm I'm glad this is over.
- 38:26I'm hoping talking about going out and getting guys I'm hoping
- 38:29that this move this Yamamoto acquisition opens the floodgates
- 38:35a little bit. I I use floodgates lightly
- 38:37because I know that the market is it's a little thin it's you
- 38:43could maybe even say a little top heavy but I'm I think it's
- 38:51pretty easy to acknowledge that this was what was holding
- 38:53everything up post show. Hey so now that we've got this
- 38:58out of the way I'm hoping these moves start rolling in.
- 39:00I'd like to see. I'd really like to see some more
- 39:03trades honestly because because of the market being a little
- 39:08thin as it is. I mean depending upon which
- 39:10which position you're looking at, it's a little more thin than
- 39:14elsewhere around the diamond. But I'm just glad it's over,
- 39:21man. I'm I, I think we're safely,
- 39:24we've reached the threshold of players that we don't need to be
- 39:28tracking flights for. We can just kind of sit back and
- 39:31let the headlines come in as they will, because I think
- 39:35Yamamoto was the last guy we were really checking reports and
- 39:39tweets to see if he was going to be at a football game.
- 39:44So like I said, I I, I hope we're at that point.
- 39:48I I think we're at that point. But can we say the Dodgers are
- 39:58done? I mean, can can we assume that
- 40:03or is that, is that a dangerous risk?
- 40:07To assume that the Dodgers are done because right now you're
- 40:13looking at for the rotation, at least you're looking at Yamamoto
- 40:16Bueller glass. Now Bobby Miller and Emmett
- 40:20Sheehan. I'm sure there have been
- 40:27conversations in that front office that look at that
- 40:30rotation and go it's good, it's not good enough.
- 40:33Whereas there's probably there's probably fans of teams around
- 40:36baseball that are looking at and going, I would take that every
- 40:41day and twice on Sunday. But look, man, the Dodgers, I
- 40:48think the Dodgers are, they're a little, I don't want to say
- 40:56insulted, but you know, they had to take it there for a year or
- 40:59two where they were sitting back punting waiting for this
- 41:02offseason knowing that these guys were coming down the pipe
- 41:05and that they knew that they're going all in.
- 41:08They had to sit back and kind of take it in the in that division
- 41:11a little bit. Not necessarily the outcome of
- 41:13of who won the division or or whatever, but just the
- 41:16commentary surrounding that division going, you know, the
- 41:20pot when the Padres were coming up.
- 41:21We're up and coming. They're going all right, Maybe.
- 41:26And I think I think we even contributed to that narrative a
- 41:29little bit, too, where it's like, all right, maybe this is
- 41:31the Padres. It's finally time for the Padres
- 41:33to make their run in this division for the years to come,
- 41:38you know, And the Dodgers kind of just had to sit there and
- 41:40take it. They go, you know, like we're
- 41:42just going to, we're going to play our hand close to the vest
- 41:46here. We're going to sit back and let
- 41:49it play out as it will, and you'll hear from us in December
- 41:52of 2023, and here we are. But I, like I said, I I think
- 42:02we're at a point where we can assume that major moves for the
- 42:06Dodgers are done short of like a trade or something like that.
- 42:10I just, I don't know who else you would go out and get if
- 42:12you're the Dodgers, but, you know, it is what it is.
- 42:24I just hope that this offseason picks up a little bit.
- 42:28I mean, I know it'll probably hit a little bit of a lull here
- 42:30now that we're we're at Christmas, we're heading into
- 42:34the new Year, and that's OK. I'm not.
- 42:37I'm not. If I was in the front office, I
- 42:40just really wouldn't want to have to be working overtime to
- 42:44try to make a deal so I can, I can appease some podcaster.
- 42:51But as front offices, if you're out there listening, can you
- 42:55just can you just, like, assure us baseball fans that once the
- 43:00new year hits, we can get things going again?
- 43:02Because it's been a little bit of a little, a little bit of a
- 43:07disappointment is maybe a little quite an understatement
- 43:10actually. Because it's it's been slow as
- 43:16we waited for Shohei, for Yamamoto.
- 43:22But now that we're there, now that now that we've checked
- 43:25those boxes, I just we just need to see Moose start being made.
- 43:28That's all we need to see checks being slid across the table.
- 43:33We need to see trades being made because we're at that time of
- 43:39year, as I'm sure you're well aware that we just need
- 43:45something as baseball fans, especially if you're if your
- 43:50team missed out on these guys. It's like we waited all this
- 43:53time and for what? Like if you're a, if you're a
- 43:59Mets fan, you're like we waited all this time for what?
- 44:02What do we have to show for it? Nothing but a couple of reports
- 44:05about possibly extending Pete Alonzo.
- 44:12It's it's slow. We're at that point.
- 44:14I'm, I'm, I'm gonna tell you, we've done this for how many
- 44:18years now and it's the same every year.
- 44:21Even when you inject it with the Shohei or a Yamamoto, it gets to
- 44:26the same point every offseason where it's like, please just do
- 44:30something. And I just I hope in about a
- 44:36week, week plus that we can we can get to that point.
- 44:43Trying to think, I think that just about, excuse me, I think
- 44:48that just about covers it. Again thanks for thanks for
- 44:54being patient with us. Just a lot going on right now
- 44:57but hoping, hoping with the new year get back to a little bit of
- 45:03normalcy. You may or may not hear from the
- 45:07podcast by the end of the new year might.
- 45:12I mean if who knows, maybe some of these teams starts, they try
- 45:18to try to get in their their homework assignment before the
- 45:21bell meaning the end of the end of the year.
- 45:25Maybe we see something in the next week or two in between
- 45:27Christmas or New Year's or Christmas and New Year's.
- 45:31So if that's the case and maybe you'll hear from us, but don't
- 45:34want to make any promises yet, but ultimately just wanted to
- 45:37get to you guys to talk Yamamoto get some, get some thoughts out
- 45:42there, add to the conversation that I'm sure is swirling around
- 45:46in your head because I'm sure like I feel for, I feel for you
- 45:53if you missed out on Yamamoto, you're probably still reeling a
- 45:56little bit going well, where do we pivot to next?
- 45:59So just wanted to put some put some perspective out there for
- 46:03you and again thank you for checking out our episode with
- 46:08Josh Boers. If you haven't please go back
- 46:12and listen that or pull it up on YouTube, it's on YouTube, you
- 46:14can get catch the interview there.
- 46:17Talked about a lot of good stuff there as I mentioned and then
- 46:19the the 30 change up bonus episode where we talked about
- 46:25the experience of flying and traveling.
- 46:28So hope to have more of those coming for you in the coming
- 46:32weeks coming months as we continue to trek through this
- 46:36offseason. But other than that, I believe
- 46:41that's it. So Merry Christmas to those of
- 46:46you out there. Happy New Year.
- 46:48If you don't hear from us again before then just take it easy
- 46:54folks. Just sit back.
- 46:56Don't stress about work, Don't stress about money, Don't stress
- 46:59about gifts, Don't stress about plans.
- 47:02Just enjoy time with your loved ones.
- 47:05Enjoy time with your pets. Enjoy time that you have where
- 47:11you don't have to stress about the team that you're a fan of
- 47:14struggling day after day, night after night like you presumably
- 47:19will have to do come March, April, May.
- 47:24Just enjoy this time. Be grateful.
- 47:27Think about. Think about what you've been
- 47:30blessed with. Just take this time to sit back,
- 47:34reflect, and as I said, enjoy some time with your loved ones.
- 47:38Maybe. Maybe flip on the pod every now
- 47:41and then if you got an hour or so to spare.
- 47:43But just take it easy, folks. Think that about.
- 47:50Do it again. Thank you guys for listening and
- 47:55appreciate your support of the show.
- 47:57Love you all and as always, looking forward to talking more
- 47:59baseball with you guys soon. Until next time, stay filthy.
