- 0:20Speaker 1: We welcome you to a Monday.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Glad to be with you here on Sports Radio AM
- 0:24Speaker 2: 1300 The Zone where you can always listen to us.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Absolutely free of charge on the iHeartRadio app. Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Welcome to the program. My name is Craig Wayne. Glad
- 0:35Speaker 2: to have you with us. Alongside the producer, Jay Kerman,
- 0:37Speaker 2: who was making sure he had one of the cameras
- 0:39Speaker 2: on me so that the only camera showing a face
- 0:43Speaker 2: wasn't the one showing just his face.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Appreciate that.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:48Speaker 1: That might help.
- 0:51Speaker 2: But we are here on a Monday and glad to
- 0:53Speaker 2: be with you here on a Monday. Much to get
- 0:55Speaker 2: into today on the program, among the things that we'll do.
- 1:02Speaker 2: This being a Longhorns Monday means we obviously begin our
- 1:06Speaker 2: coverage from the UT campus on Longhorns Monday, every Monday morning.
- 1:09Speaker 1: At 11 o'clock.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Mike Hardball, Harge, and I break down what happened in
- 1:15Speaker 2: the game the prior Saturday. And then at 1130, thereabouts,
- 1:19Speaker 2: right around the bottom now, where we bring you the
- 1:21Speaker 2: weekly news conference with Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian.
- 1:24Speaker 1: That we did, again, this morning.
- 1:26Speaker 2: And we will bring you the highlights and really kind
- 1:34Speaker 2: of the cut-up form version of the presser. You'll hear
- 1:36Speaker 2: everything Sark had to say in the news conference coming
- 1:39Speaker 2: up in our breakdown session. segments throughout the course of
- 1:43Speaker 2: the day, so we'll do that. We'll also look back
- 1:46Speaker 2: at the Cowboys' loss and the Texans' win. Who would
- 1:53Speaker 2: have thought that two weeks ago, the Cowboys were sitting
- 1:57Speaker 2: at 2-2 going home to play a winless Tampa Bay team,
- 2:01Speaker 2: and the Texans were 0-4 and looking like their season
- 2:08Speaker 2: was ready to crash and burn. And in the two
- 2:10Speaker 2: weeks that have ensued, both teams now have the same record.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Both teams are 2-4. So I don't know who would
- 2:18Speaker 2: have picked that out and thought about that in advance,
- 2:20Speaker 2: but that is what has happened. And we'll take a
- 2:26Speaker 2: look back at both the Cowboys' loss last night to
- 2:30Speaker 2: the Green Bay Packers, and also we'll take a look
- 2:36Speaker 2: at the Texans' victory as well we'll hear from D'Amico
- 2:39Speaker 2: Ryan's a Texas head coach Brian Schottenheimer the Cowboys head
- 2:42Speaker 2: coach will do that we'll hear from Arch Manning today
- 2:45Speaker 2: I know many of you have thoughts questions comments opinions
- 2:49Speaker 2: on the Longhorn quarterback this would not be Austin Texas
- 2:54Speaker 2: and the home of the Texas Longhorn football program without
- 3:00Speaker 2: opinions comments about the head coach of the quarterback that
- 3:04Speaker 2: happens win lose draw good season bad season whatever So
- 3:08Speaker 2: there are more of that. And as always, we welcome
- 3:12Speaker 2: your questions, your thoughts, your comments. If you'd like to
- 3:14Speaker 2: text the program, feel free to do so. You can
- 3:16Speaker 2: text us. You text the word Texas, followed by your
- 3:19Speaker 2: question or comment to 81530. So you text the word Texas,
- 3:25Speaker 2: followed by your question or comment to 81530. Standard messaging
- 3:29Speaker 2: and data rates may apply.
- 3:31Speaker 1: The Major League Baseball playoffs, getting closer to.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Being completely ready for the World Series. Milwaukee Brewers have
- 3:40Speaker 2: been ready for the past few days. After wrapping up
- 3:43Speaker 2: the National League Championship Series, they've had a few days
- 3:45Speaker 2: off and waiting.
- 3:46Speaker 1: On an opponent.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Well, now the Tampa Bay Rays have the series in
- 3:52Speaker 2: their favor. The ALCS are up three games to two
- 3:56Speaker 2: after winning game four in Cleveland and game five in Cleveland.
- 4:00Speaker 2: And remember, they also had one game rained out and
- 4:03Speaker 2: had to make it up. So as a result of that,
- 4:06Speaker 2: they played the three games in Cleveland. Guardians won game
- 4:09Speaker 2: three to go up two games to one in the series.
- 4:11Speaker 2: But Tampa Bay has come.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Back and won back-to-back games and now is up three
- 4:20Speaker 1: games to two with the series shifting immediately back to
- 4:26Speaker 1: the Florida Gulf Coast because they had to, you know,
- 4:30Speaker 1: because of the one rain out day. So they lost
- 4:32Speaker 1: the travel day off of that.
- 4:34Speaker 2: So after the game that was played last night, they
- 4:38Speaker 2: turn right around and headed to St.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Pete and they'll play game six tonight.
- 4:42Speaker 2: And Tampa Bay stands one win away from winning the
- 4:46Speaker 2: American league and going to the world series, which if
- 4:49Speaker 2: that happens, the, it guarantees that we'll have a first
- 4:54Speaker 2: time world series champion. Neither the brewers nor the race
- 4:57Speaker 2: have won one. And, um, where if, if now, if
- 5:02Speaker 2: the guardians win game six, they'll force a game seven.
- 5:05Speaker 2: And if the guardians win game seven, They would be
- 5:08Speaker 2: back in the World Series. Of course, they haven't won
- 5:10Speaker 2: one since they were the Cleveland Indians, and that was
- 5:12Speaker 2: back in 1948. So that's 78 years ago. But Tampa
- 5:18Speaker 2: Bay has never won one. They've been in two. Milwaukee
- 5:21Speaker 2: has never won one. This will be their second last time.
- 5:25Speaker 2: I think it was 44 years ago in 1982. So
- 5:27Speaker 2: they're just waiting on the winner. And game six of
- 5:30Speaker 2: that series is tonight in Tampa Bay. All right, so
- 5:33Speaker 2: there's that. NBA regular season starts tomorrow. actually going to
- 5:37Speaker 2: be games going on during the afternoon. And, and I
- 5:41Speaker 2: would say this, um, as the season for the NBA
- 5:49Speaker 2: gets underway tomorrow, we wouldn't like to invite you on
- 5:53Speaker 2: out to, uh, Boulevard social where we will be up
- 5:57Speaker 2: on North Lamar. Uh, and so, uh, we'll be there
- 6:01Speaker 2: regular two to five shift, but also my cardboard hards and,
- 6:06Speaker 2: Mark Henry, who together hosts the morning kickoff, will drop by.
- 6:09Speaker 2: They'll be on us. Cameron Park will be out there.
- 6:11Speaker 2: So anyway, they'll be out there. It's at 6215 North
- 6:17Speaker 2: Lamar for the program tomorrow afternoon as we welcome in
- 6:22Speaker 2: a new establishment to the area. And look, any establishment,
- 6:27Speaker 2: we can always use. There can never be too many
- 6:31Speaker 2: really good sports bars. There's lots of sports bars. Some
- 6:38Speaker 2: are better than others and some are significantly better than others.
- 6:41Speaker 2: But if it's a good one, there's always room for
- 6:45Speaker 2: another good one. And so we're excited about being out
- 6:49Speaker 2: at Boulevard Social tomorrow from 2 to 5. 62-15 North Lamar.
- 6:55Speaker 2: So we'll be up on North Lamar for that one
- 6:58Speaker 2: tomorrow afternoon. And from 2 to 5 in the NBA
- 7:01Speaker 2: regular season schedule. Actually, we'll start tomorrow afternoon. And then
- 7:04Speaker 2: there's games. tomorrow night as well.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So there's plenty to talk about that.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Also, plenty to talk about in the college football scene
- 7:12Speaker 2: and not just the Texas Longhorns. Certainly, not just the Longhorns,
- 7:20Speaker 2: but also the other games that have happened because we
- 7:23Speaker 2: had an historic weekend on the college football landscape last weekend.
- 7:30Speaker 2: More top 10 teams lost on one given Saturday than
- 7:36Speaker 2: has ever happened in the, call it modern if you
- 7:40Speaker 2: want or whatever, in the AP poll era, which started
- 7:43Speaker 2: in 1936.
- 7:43Speaker 1: So that's been around 90 years.
- 7:47Speaker 2: And the number one team lost, the number two team lost,
- 7:50Speaker 2: the number five team lost, the number six team lost,
- 7:52Speaker 2: the number seven team lost. That's five, half of that
- 7:56Speaker 2: top 10. And then plenty more, there were other picked teams.
- 8:01Speaker 2: There were crazy finishes. that happened in games. So Miami,
- 8:09Speaker 2: you know, which was number three, managed to win.
- 8:12Speaker 1: They survived overtime with Florida State. So you had that.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Utah had to rally back to win. They were number
- 8:19Speaker 2: 11 going into the week. So we'll have the new
- 8:21Speaker 2: AP rankings out for you as well. But it was
- 8:24Speaker 2: a crazy weekend. And I know a lot of Longhorn
- 8:26Speaker 2: fans were unhappy about what happened. And certainly, I heard
- 8:31Speaker 2: somebody on television saying, hey, Misery loves company since Georgia
- 8:36Speaker 2: lost and since Alabama lost and since Notre Dame lost.
- 8:43Speaker 2: You know, does it really make you feel that much better?
- 8:45Speaker 2: Probably not if you're a Texas fan. It might give
- 8:49Speaker 2: you a little more context and understanding of what the
- 8:51Speaker 2: college football landscape is about these days. So for those,
- 8:58Speaker 2: and there are those out there on social media, that's
- 9:01Speaker 2: for certain, who have said, you know, with all this payroll,
- 9:05Speaker 2: NIL money that the Longhorns are giving the players. You know,
- 9:12Speaker 2: can't believe that they've lost these back-to-back games with the
- 9:15Speaker 2: type of money that's being paid out through NIL to
- 9:18Speaker 2: a lot of these guys. Look around you. It's happening all...
- 9:22Speaker 2: If nothing else, I think what's happened because of the
- 9:25Speaker 2: NIL era, it has leveled the playing field in some
- 9:30Speaker 2: respects because some schools... are able now to offer some money.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Now they may not be paying out $ 50 million in payroll,
- 9:40Speaker 2: but they're able to get a key player or two
- 9:43Speaker 2: that can help them pull off a surprise or two.
- 9:49Speaker 1: By landing those players through the portal. So Transfer Portal
- 9:53Speaker 1: and NIL, I think, have.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Kind of evened things up a little bit.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Doesn't mean that the best teams shouldn't still always win
- 10:06Speaker 2: or that the cream wouldn't rise to the top. We
- 10:08Speaker 2: had this discussion when talking about the expansion of the
- 10:10Speaker 2: college football playoff going to 24 teams. And that was
- 10:14Speaker 2: a big hot button topic last week about with the
- 10:19Speaker 2: playoff expanding and doubling in size to 24, what would
- 10:23Speaker 2: that mean for G6 schools? Might it give one a
- 10:27Speaker 2: chance to break through? Or are we going to see
- 10:31Speaker 2: basically the halves continue to be the halves? I think
- 10:37Speaker 2: in large measure, and I pointed this out last week,
- 10:40Speaker 2: this playoff expansion is less about the Georgias and Alabamas
- 10:46Speaker 2: and Texas and Notre Dames and Miami's even of the world.
- 10:49Speaker 1: It's about, it's not about that.
- 10:51Speaker 2: It, this is more about the sixth, seventh, eighth place
- 10:55Speaker 2: finishers in the conference or the, in some of those
- 10:57Speaker 2: conferences having shot to get in the fourth, the fifth,
- 11:00Speaker 2: the sixth, the seventh, you know, whatever it might be
- 11:03Speaker 2: teams that with three losses in the past had no shot.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Now with a 2014 playoff, those teams have, will have
- 11:13Speaker 2: a shot in some teams, and this is the fear
- 11:16Speaker 2: of some who were against the expansion, that say an
- 11:19Speaker 2: eight and four power four conference team might get the
- 11:22Speaker 2: nod over say a 10 and two G6. I think
- 11:25Speaker 2: it depends on who they're playing. Depends on your strength
- 11:28Speaker 2: of schedule and what you're doing. And probably what has
- 11:32Speaker 2: made a lot of college football fans weary is the
- 11:35Speaker 2: power four conference scheduling boosts that the P4s get simply
- 11:44Speaker 2: because they have to play one another. They have to
- 11:45Speaker 2: play nine games in the Big Ten, in the SEC.
- 11:48Speaker 2: ACC is going to it as well, and the Big 12.
- 11:52Speaker 2: That the cannibalization that is going on right now in
- 11:56Speaker 2: power conference football will only help them in a 2014 playoff.
- 12:00Speaker 1: It might be.
- 12:01Speaker 2: It might work out that way, or at least some
- 12:04Speaker 2: of you. I think every year can be individual unto itself.
- 12:07Speaker 2: But you look at the SEC right now. You have
- 12:10Speaker 2: a Mississippi team coming in an Ole Miss team, to
- 12:14Speaker 2: play Texas. Ole Miss is currently ranked seventh. They lost
- 12:18Speaker 2: by 24 to Florida.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Florida, of.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Course, just got through beating Texas. Ole Miss beat LSU.
- 12:28Speaker 2: LSU has had its way. Florida also beat Auburn, who
- 12:33Speaker 2: beat Georgia, who beat Alabama. So you see how all
- 12:37Speaker 2: this works. That's... the any given Saturday thing about how
- 12:42Speaker 2: difficult it is in the SEC. And we'll hear Sark
- 12:44Speaker 2: talk about that coming up from his press conference. All right,
- 12:48Speaker 2: coming up, we're going to hear from Sark and then
- 12:51Speaker 2: we're going to recap what's happened with the Cowboys and
- 12:54Speaker 2: the Texans as well. Again, we'll take your questions or
- 12:58Speaker 2: comments on the text line, text the word Texas, followed
- 13:01Speaker 2: by your question or comment to 81530.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And also you can reach us.
- 13:07Speaker 2: On the TalkBack feature, if you want to make your
- 13:09Speaker 2: voice heard, all you have to do is make sure
- 13:11Speaker 2: you have the iHeartRadio app downloaded on your smartphone, be
- 13:15Speaker 2: it the Android or the iPhone. You search AM13 under
- 13:18Speaker 2: the zone, it'll pop straight up. And when it does,
- 13:21Speaker 2: then you'll see two buttons, a little white one that's
- 13:23Speaker 2: triangular shaped. That's to listen to what's going on the air.
- 13:27Speaker 2: But to have your voice heard on the air, it's
- 13:29Speaker 2: that little red button that you'll see that has a
- 13:31Speaker 2: white microphone in it.
- 13:33Speaker 1: That's the talkback mic. You press that button, you can
- 13:36Speaker 1: leave us a message of up to 30 seconds. So
- 13:38Speaker 1: feel free to do that as well.
- 13:40Speaker 2: It is a Monday, a Longhorns Monday, a lot to unpack.
- 13:43Speaker 2: We'll get to that coming up on Sports Radio AM
- 13:45Speaker 2: 13 Under the Zone and where you always listen to
- 13:47Speaker 2: us for free on the iHeartRadio app. Here's a Monday
- 13:51Speaker 2: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. Before we
- 13:58Speaker 2: get to hearing from the press conference, our med coach,
- 14:02Speaker 2: Steve Sarkeesian, on the text line, we had somebody say,
- 14:06Speaker 2: why doesn't anyone talk about the O-line? They don't appear
- 14:08Speaker 2: to be getting a push up front. Defensive players seem
- 14:10Speaker 2: to be waiting on Arch when he finishes his drop.
- 14:13Speaker 2: That's some of what's going to come up in this
- 14:15Speaker 2: when they talk about what the offensive line has to
- 14:18Speaker 2: do and also handling billets pickup. So you're going to
- 14:20Speaker 2: hear that from Sarke. Ashley says, is Sark on the
- 14:24Speaker 2: hot seat? Was he told to fire him, the play
- 14:26Speaker 2: calling over to Kyle? Or is he going to bench
- 14:29Speaker 2: Arch and start KJ?
- 14:31Speaker 1: No, no, and no. No, hasn't been told to do
- 14:37Speaker 1: any of that kind of stuff.
- 14:38Speaker 2: So there was a report by Pete Thamel this morning
- 14:46Speaker 2: that said that, and I want to make sure I
- 14:51Speaker 2: paraphrase him properly. that there was going to be an
- 14:54Speaker 2: uptick in first team reps for KJ Lacey this week. Now,
- 15:02Speaker 2: there are first oblique and then more direct references made
- 15:05Speaker 2: to the Thamel piece in the press conference with Steve Sarkisian.
- 15:11Speaker 2: So you'll hear his responses to that. Let's start off,
- 15:14Speaker 2: of course, with Sark from the presser with his opening thoughts.
- 15:17Speaker 6: Just a quick recap from Saturday. You know, obviously, there
- 15:21Speaker 6: was a real sense of disappointment and frustration coming out
- 15:26Speaker 6: of the ball game.
- 15:27Speaker 7: And I think probably the.
- 15:29Speaker 6: Biggest area, I'm going to encompass a lot here, where
- 15:32Speaker 6: I was disappointed, I think we all were, and we
- 15:34Speaker 6: all are, is we just were really poor in critical
- 15:38Speaker 6: situations in the game. And you think about offensively, just
- 15:43Speaker 6: short yardage offense, whether it was the second drive of
- 15:46Speaker 6: the game, the third down in the red area, we
- 15:50Speaker 6: get a tackle for loss. the fourth down at the
- 15:53Speaker 6: end of the first half. And all those, I'm just
- 15:56Speaker 6: naming a two. There was more than that. And that's
- 15:59Speaker 6: on us as coaches and players executing. I'm not pointing
- 16:02Speaker 6: the finger at anybody. That's all of us involved. That
- 16:06Speaker 6: was poor. I think when you think about defensively, after
- 16:10Speaker 6: we get stopped on the fourth down, we have Florida
- 16:13Speaker 6: in a fourth and 12. And we don't, we don't,
- 16:18Speaker 6: have proper pass rush lanes. We give him an opportunity
- 16:20Speaker 6: to roll to his right. And then we don't cover
- 16:24Speaker 6: properly a bunch set. And we give up the fourth
- 16:26Speaker 6: and 12. Then we give up the third and three
- 16:29Speaker 6: for a touchdown in the red area. We have miscommunication
- 16:32Speaker 6: going the other way. And we leave a tight end
- 16:34Speaker 6: open in the end zone. And then at the end
- 16:37Speaker 6: of the game, the third and seven, where they get
- 16:40Speaker 6: the first down. So think about the critical situations of
- 16:43Speaker 6: the game. When we need to be at our best
- 16:45Speaker 6: when our best is needed, we were clearly not at
- 16:48Speaker 6: our best in those moments. And so that was definitely frustrating.
- 16:51Speaker 6: I also felt like we missed opportunities on offense. Definitely
- 16:55Speaker 6: in the passing game, we could have created positive yardage,
- 16:59Speaker 6: even some explosive plays that we didn't take advantage of.
- 17:02Speaker 6: And so the key to the drill for us moving
- 17:05Speaker 6: forward now is, We got to have the constructive conversations,
- 17:09Speaker 6: you know, and we've had those. And I credit our
- 17:12Speaker 6: players and our staff, for that matter, yesterday and our
- 17:15Speaker 6: players today of being receptive to those conversations, being coachable
- 17:19Speaker 6: in those conversations, and them understanding we all need to
- 17:23Speaker 6: be part of the solution. Because it's easy to listen
- 17:26Speaker 6: to the outside noise and the sky is falling and
- 17:28Speaker 6: the season's over and what are we going to do
- 17:31Speaker 6: next year? Hey, man, we're four and two, okay? Let's
- 17:34Speaker 6: be part of the solution together. Let's go 1-0 this
- 17:36Speaker 6: week and let's get to 5-2. There's a lot of
- 17:38Speaker 6: football left to be played. I think we all saw
- 17:41Speaker 6: that Saturday in the Southeastern Conference. And, you know, I've
- 17:45Speaker 6: been preaching this now for three years. There's not a
- 17:48Speaker 6: game in a Saturday in the SEC where any team
- 17:51Speaker 6: can't beat the other team. And, you know, we saw
- 17:54Speaker 6: that with Auburn and Georgia. We saw that with Tennessee
- 17:57Speaker 6: and Alabama. None of you can raise your hand and
- 18:00Speaker 6: say you predicted those two outcomes to happen.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Okay.
- 18:02Speaker 6: And that's the same thing with our team. And so
- 18:05Speaker 6: the point with us is we got to get back
- 18:07Speaker 6: on the horse. We got to ride. We got to
- 18:09Speaker 6: be part of the solution.
- 18:11Speaker 7: Okay.
- 18:11Speaker 6: We got to pour into one another. And I think
- 18:13Speaker 6: this team will do that. I think the true character
- 18:15Speaker 6: of this team will show through and we'll be ready
- 18:17Speaker 6: to play Saturday night.
- 18:18Speaker 1: We will.
- 18:20Speaker 7: And, um, we've got a very good opponent in old miss.
- 18:22Speaker 6: Um, Pete Golding has done a fantastic job since taking over, uh,
- 18:26Speaker 6: at old miss. Um, they're really good offensive football team.
- 18:30Speaker 6: Trinidad Chambliss is a fantastic player. Key Juan Lacey, uh,
- 18:34Speaker 6: explosive at the wide receiver spot. They're very good defensive
- 18:37Speaker 6: football team. Uh, they're big upfront. Um, Echols is a
- 18:40Speaker 6: fantastic player, but he's not the only one that's got
- 18:43Speaker 6: a big front, uh, and they're sticky and coverage in
- 18:45Speaker 6: the back end.
- 18:46Speaker 7: So it's a heck of a challenge. Um, But honestly,
- 18:49Speaker 7: I wouldn't want it any other way.
- 18:51Speaker 6: I think we get an opportunity this week to show
- 18:52Speaker 6: the true character of this team.
- 18:54Speaker 7: We get to be back at home at DKR.
- 18:56Speaker 6: Our fans were awesome again last Saturday, and I expect
- 19:00Speaker 6: nothing less of our fans again this Saturday night at
- 19:03Speaker 6: 649 when we kick this ball off.
- 19:06Speaker 1: All right, then to the questions. First, he was asked
- 19:08Speaker 1: about quarterback play, and does he have a specific plan
- 19:12Speaker 1: on all of this moving forward?
- 19:14Speaker 6: I think there's, there's no doubt about it. Arch can
- 19:16Speaker 6: play better for us. You know, he's our starter. Um,
- 19:19Speaker 6: but I, but I need to see a better version
- 19:21Speaker 6: of Arch Manning. Like I need to see a better
- 19:22Speaker 6: version of a lot of guys on our offensive football
- 19:25Speaker 6: team right now, but we need to see a better
- 19:26Speaker 6: version of him this week.
- 19:27Speaker 7: All right.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Then he was asked, uh, could he convert, confirm that
- 19:33Speaker 2: Pete Thamel had reported that about the first team reps
- 19:36Speaker 2: for KJ Lacey?
- 19:38Speaker 7: Uh, he takes first team reps every week.
- 19:40Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 19:40Speaker 4: All right.
- 19:41Speaker 1: So then, uh, next, um, We all saw what happened
- 19:47Speaker 1: to Colin Simmons on Saturday. And it was unfortunate.
- 19:50Speaker 2: There was a report that came out that said that
- 19:56Speaker 2: it's a high ankle sprain and that Simmons could be
- 19:59Speaker 2: expected to miss three to four weeks. It could happen
- 20:02Speaker 2: that way. So there was a report that came out
- 20:05Speaker 2: about that. So again, Sark asked, is there anything he wants?
- 20:09Speaker 2: And Let me just say this. Everybody knows going into
- 20:15Speaker 2: each press conference each week, when you get into conference play,
- 20:20Speaker 2: the SEC Student Athlete Availability Report comes out on Wednesday.
- 20:24Speaker 2: There's a big reason for that. The two biggest hay
- 20:29Speaker 2: in the barn, heavy load-in days of practice are Tuesday
- 20:34Speaker 2: and Wednesday. That's the days where you get a good
- 20:38Speaker 2: feel for whether an injured player or a guy who's
- 20:43Speaker 2: banged up or just hurting or whatever is going to
- 20:46Speaker 2: be available. Wednesday is the first time when we hear
- 20:49Speaker 2: about that. It could be anywhere from not listed on
- 20:53Speaker 2: the injury report to probable to questionable to doubtful or out.
- 20:58Speaker 2: That comes out on Wednesday evening. And they're not required
- 21:02Speaker 2: to say anything about injured players until then. That, however,
- 21:08Speaker 2: does not stop the media from feeling it has a
- 21:11Speaker 2: responsibility and obligation to ask about injured players.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Sark, I know the injury report's out Wednesday, but there's
- 21:17Speaker 3: reports Colin Simmons could miss up to a month.
- 21:19Speaker 7: You're going to do this?
- 21:19Speaker 6: You want to waste your question on this right now?
- 21:21Speaker 6: I'm giving you a chance to change the question.
- 21:24Speaker 3: I mean, it's an all-American. People are asking their speculation.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Any report on Simmons and his availability? Wednesday night, guys,
- 21:32Speaker 3: you guys will find out. What is that, around 7 o'clock, 7.15?
- 21:34Speaker 4: 7.10.
- 21:34Speaker 7: 7.10, there you go.
- 21:35Speaker 1: I'm trying to help you. That's it right there.
- 21:42Speaker 2: And it was all done with smiles on faces and
- 21:44Speaker 2: jokes and things like that. But the point is made
- 21:46Speaker 2: that he's not required to answer anything about injuries and
- 21:51Speaker 2: isn't going to until they issue the injury report that
- 21:55Speaker 2: comes out on Wednesday.
- 21:57Speaker 1: But that was the question for him.
- 21:59Speaker 2: All right. So then he was asked, there's some things
- 22:04Speaker 2: that clearly are not working. For Arch, there are some
- 22:06Speaker 2: things that have been, whatever, the question, the way it
- 22:10Speaker 2: was phrased was broken. So how do you fix what
- 22:13Speaker 2: is broken with regard to Arch Manning?
- 22:16Speaker 6: Well, I think that's our job as coaches, and that's
- 22:18Speaker 6: part for Arch, the player, right? There's two parts to this, right,
- 22:22Speaker 6: is continuing to pour into him and coaching him and
- 22:26Speaker 6: put him in the best frame of mind to be successful.
- 22:28Speaker 7: Sometimes that's patting him on the back.
- 22:30Speaker 6: Sometimes that's tough love, and we've got to be honest
- 22:33Speaker 6: with him of where he needs to improve. And like
- 22:35Speaker 6: I said earlier, we need to see a better version
- 22:37Speaker 6: of him this week in practice and in game because
- 22:42Speaker 6: ultimately the player is in there. And that's our job
- 22:45Speaker 6: to try to get it out of him.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Okay. And then one more from Sark this hour. He
- 22:50Speaker 1: was asked if there was a specific disconnect that he
- 22:53Speaker 1: can identify that led and has led the last two
- 22:58Speaker 1: weeks to the struggles for the offense in the second half,
- 23:01Speaker 1: especially in the third quarter when things have not gone well.
- 23:03Speaker 7: It's been frustrating. I'll be honest with you.
- 23:07Speaker 6: You know, we think about coming out at OU, getting
- 23:10Speaker 6: the ball, and how important that first drive we felt
- 23:12Speaker 6: like was going to be. and getting one first down
- 23:16Speaker 6: and then kind of stalling out. This week was a
- 23:18Speaker 6: little bit of a different scenario where they got the
- 23:22Speaker 6: ball to start the second half, and I think they had,
- 23:24Speaker 6: if I'm not mistaken, about an eight-minute drive, seven or
- 23:27Speaker 6: eight-minute drive to start the second half. you really got
- 23:31Speaker 6: to capitalize when you've been sitting on the bench. And
- 23:33Speaker 6: part of that, you know, I think is a big
- 23:35Speaker 6: picture thing. I'm not, I'm going to answer your question,
- 23:37Speaker 6: but we need to play better complimentary football as a team.
- 23:41Speaker 6: And I've said this in the past different years, but
- 23:43Speaker 6: I just think we need to work off of each
- 23:45Speaker 6: other better. right like when our defense is is stuck
- 23:49Speaker 6: on the field we were struggling to get off the
- 23:50Speaker 6: field on third down we were kind of bleeding there
- 23:53Speaker 6: in the third quarter um that's when the offense really
- 23:56Speaker 6: needs to put together drives to kind of keep themselves
- 24:00Speaker 6: on the field allow the defense to kind of regroup
- 24:03Speaker 6: so that when they go back out they're they're more
- 24:05Speaker 6: fresh than they are so as much as i want
- 24:07Speaker 6: to score there's a part of playing complimentary football there
- 24:10Speaker 6: too um.
- 24:11Speaker 7: So yeah, I agree with you. It's like, man, it
- 24:15Speaker 7: used to be the other way around where we wouldn't
- 24:16Speaker 7: start games very good.
- 24:18Speaker 6: And then it was like, we'd make these great adjustments
- 24:20Speaker 6: and play better in the second half. Now we've actually
- 24:23Speaker 6: started pretty good. Now we need to be better in
- 24:25Speaker 6: the second half. So that's part of coaching, right? That's
- 24:28Speaker 6: our job to get them in a space of really
- 24:30Speaker 6: understanding what we're trying to do to start the second
- 24:32Speaker 6: half and then executing those things at a high level.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Okay. All right.
- 24:36Speaker 2: We'll hear more from Sark coming up next hour. Up next,
- 24:38Speaker 2: we bring Inconceivable here on a Monday. On Sports Radio
- 24:41Speaker 2: AM 13, under the zone on the iHeartRadio app.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Do you ever look so nice after so much time?
- 24:48Speaker 2: You folks could follow what Jake was doing there in
- 24:51Speaker 2: the Billy Joel standard scenes from an Italian restaurant. Our
- 24:55Speaker 2: man CB, our savant on X, said it is called
- 25:00Speaker 2: the never-ending pasta bowl.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely. Olive Garden.
- 25:04Speaker 2: My late father enjoyed it when he was alive. I
- 25:06Speaker 2: don't think I could eat nine bowls of their fettuccine,
- 25:09Speaker 2: but it is so good.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Good point, CB.
- 25:12Speaker 2: I like, you know, some of the items there at
- 25:18Speaker 2: Olive Garden. I don't think I could eat nine or
- 25:21Speaker 2: 10 or 11 like the young lady did, 13. I
- 25:22Speaker 2: don't think I could eat 13 bowls of pasta. Get
- 25:27Speaker 2: a picture on the wall for that. Yeah. You know,
- 25:31Speaker 2: kind of like an employee of the month thing or,
- 25:33Speaker 2: you know, maybe you get the deal where you get
- 25:35Speaker 2: the thing, you know, like Pluckers does with the deal if.
- 25:37Speaker 1: You do the.
- 25:37Speaker 4: I've done that. Firing the whole challenge.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Did you succeed?
- 25:40Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Really? How is it you can't eat chocolate ice cream,
- 25:45Speaker 1: but you can eat 25 gut blow up wings? How
- 25:50Speaker 1: does that happen?
- 25:51Speaker 4: Oh, I'm not saying the gut didn't blow up. Oh,
- 25:53Speaker 4: you just did it.
- 25:54Speaker 1: That's all.
- 25:54Speaker 4: I just did it. Did it for fun.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Did you do it with a lot of milk? Drink
- 25:57Speaker 1: a lot of milk?
- 25:59Speaker 4: Um, no, I did it with a little extra dose
- 26:02Speaker 4: of the, uh, well, this is going to, this is
- 26:04Speaker 4: going to make you laugh.
- 26:05Speaker 7: Oat milk, ice cream.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Of course. So of course. Okay.
- 26:08Speaker 2: All right. Uh, let's hear a little bit. Um, um,
- 26:12Speaker 2: I'll tell you what, we'll wait, we'll hold off on
- 26:14Speaker 2: the pro football sound. We'll do that coming up next hour. Uh,
- 26:17Speaker 2: because one, everybody, I don't want to rush through it.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Let folks hear from Brian Schottenheimer, uh, from Dak Prescott from, uh,
- 26:25Speaker 2: D'Amico Ryans and from CJ Stroud.
- 26:28Speaker 1: So the head coaches and the two quarterbacks of the
- 26:30Speaker 1: two NFL teams.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Did you get up in time to watch any of
- 26:32Speaker 2: the Texans game yesterday?
- 26:33Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I was up because I was broadcasting up
- 26:36Speaker 4: at Southwestern. So I saw the first half of the
- 26:38Speaker 4: Texans game. I listened on Westwood One to a British broadcaster.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Did a great job calling the second half.
- 26:46Speaker 1: What time was your soccer game?
- 26:48Speaker 4: First match kicked off at 11 a.m.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Okay.
- 26:50Speaker 8: All right.
- 26:51Speaker 2: All right, so you were listening on the way up. Yeah,
- 26:53Speaker 2: that was the third quarter on the way up. Yeah, yeah, okay,
- 26:55Speaker 2: all right. Yeah, so they had an 8.30 a.m. kickoff
- 26:58Speaker 2: there in London. They're going to have the first ever
- 27:01Speaker 2: game in Paris this week. I think it's Saints and Steelers, maybe?
- 27:07Speaker 2: I know the Saints. Well, it would make sense that
- 27:12Speaker 2: the Saints would be in there with the Fleur de Lis.
- 27:13Speaker 1: There you go. It would make sense that it was
- 27:15Speaker 1: on that. But I think the Steelers. And how about
- 27:18Speaker 1: the Steelers of late? Anybody see what Aaron Rodgers has done?
- 27:22Speaker 1: Eight touchdown passes in three games.
- 27:24Speaker 4: They're keeping them clean. They're getting the ball out. They've
- 27:27Speaker 4: got a good one-two punch on the ground. They're surprisingly good.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Yeah, they've rallied and done well. And meanwhile, Tampa Bay
- 27:37Speaker 2: went back to being Tampa Bay. We'll talk more about
- 27:39Speaker 2: the NFL coming up next hour. We'll hear, like I said,
- 27:43Speaker 2: from Ryan Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach, also from Dak Prescott,
- 27:48Speaker 2: Cowboys quarterback, And from D'Amico Ryans, the Texans head coach,
- 27:53Speaker 2: and his quarterback, C.J.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Stroud.
- 27:55Speaker 2: And obviously more coming from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian.
- 27:59Speaker 2: We'll hear from the Longhorn's quarterback before the day is done.
- 28:01Speaker 2: We'll hear from Arch Manning as well. More than happy
- 28:05Speaker 2: to take your text. We've read texts so far. We'll
- 28:08Speaker 2: read more of them. All you have to do is
- 28:10Speaker 2: text the word Texas, followed by your question or comment,
- 28:12Speaker 2: to 81530. So, again, the word Texas, got to do
- 28:17Speaker 2: that first. It could be a capital T, little t,
- 28:19Speaker 2: all caps, doesn't matter. Texas, type that, followed by your
- 28:25Speaker 2: question or comment, to 81530.
- 28:29Speaker 1: 81530.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Standard messaging and data rates may apply. Also, the talkback feature.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Download the IR radio app. Search AM 1300 The Zone.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Punch that red button with a white microphone and leave
- 28:41Speaker 2: us a message up to 30 seconds. Hour number two
- 28:43Speaker 2: coming up on 1300 The Zone.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Hour number two of the program here on Sports Radio
- 28:59Speaker 1: AM 1300 The Zone.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Glad to be with you, Craig Way, alongside the producer,
- 29:04Speaker 2: Jake Herman. We're with you up until 5 o'clock. First
- 29:06Speaker 2: hour of the program, into the books, and moving on
- 29:11Speaker 2: to hour number two. And we're going to hear more
- 29:14Speaker 2: from Longhorns head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, from the press conference
- 29:23Speaker 2: this morning, which we brought to you live, as we
- 29:29Speaker 2: do every Longhorns Monday during the football season. We did
- 29:34Speaker 2: also learn some additional Longhorn news. The kickoff. of course,
- 29:40Speaker 2: for this week's game against Ole Miss technically is going
- 29:45Speaker 2: to be 6.49 p.m., by the way. I know it's
- 29:48Speaker 2: listed 6.30, but by the time the kickoff, and that's
- 29:51Speaker 2: why Sark said 6.49 p.m., because that's what we've been told.
- 29:55Speaker 1: That's what they did with the Ohio State game. It
- 29:56Speaker 1: was listed as 6.30. It became 6.49.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Could be the same for the Mississippi State game on
- 30:01Speaker 2: Halloween that follows the week after. It has officially been
- 30:04Speaker 2: listed as a 6.30 p.m.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Kickoff.
- 30:07Speaker 2: That was announced today. A 6.30 p.m. kickoff for Mississippi State.
- 30:13Speaker 2: But that could also be 6.49 as well. Don't know
- 30:16Speaker 2: about that yet. TV makes that call later to give
- 30:20Speaker 2: the first game more wrap-up time and all that other
- 30:22Speaker 2: kind of stuff. So that could happen. Could be the
- 30:26Speaker 2: case as well. So how many soccer games did you
- 30:29Speaker 2: have yesterday?
- 30:30Speaker 4: Just the two.
- 30:31Speaker 7: Doubleheader.
- 30:33Speaker 1: And who was Southwestern playing?
- 30:34Speaker 4: The Vikings from Berry College.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Didn't they just play them in football on Saturday?
- 30:41Speaker 4: The conference foes, I would guess.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I think they did. That would make sense.
- 30:44Speaker 2: And I think Berry handled them. I think it was
- 30:48Speaker 2: something like 34-7 or something like that. One thing that
- 30:51Speaker 2: our studio anchor, Jeff Morrison, does is... This started a
- 30:58Speaker 2: few years ago where our producer, the late Bill Harwell,
- 31:04Speaker 2: was our producer back in the day. And Bill understood
- 31:10Speaker 2: that there were a lot of people, especially in the
- 31:11Speaker 2: home games when people are stuck in the parking garages
- 31:14Speaker 2: trying to get out or maybe they're driving somewhere else
- 31:19Speaker 2: or maybe they're just driving across the state of Texas,
- 31:22Speaker 2: whether they listen to our game and maybe they don't
- 31:24Speaker 2: have anything else to listen to or or they've been
- 31:27Speaker 2: listening to our post game, but they might or might
- 31:32Speaker 2: not necessarily be a Texas alum or even a Texas fan,
- 31:39Speaker 2: might not. So Bill said back then, he said, you
- 31:44Speaker 2: know what we ought to do? We ought to have
- 31:47Speaker 2: a segment of our scoreboard coverage from the studio where
- 31:54Speaker 2: the studio anchor give scores from other games and not
- 31:57Speaker 2: just A & M or Baylor or TCU or Texas
- 32:01Speaker 2: Tech or SMU or Rice and not just Division I.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Let's see if we, and he put it on me
- 32:10Speaker 2: at the time and said, would you, you think you
- 32:12Speaker 2: could draft up a list of maybe some Division II
- 32:16Speaker 2: Lone Star Conference games or something like that?
- 32:19Speaker 1: And I said, sure.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Not only did I do that, I drew up Division
- 32:23Speaker 2: III games. Because we had Southwestern University right up here
- 32:27Speaker 2: in Georgetown up the road. You have Texas Lutheran right
- 32:30Speaker 2: over in Seguin. You have that. You have several D2
- 32:34Speaker 2: and D3 schools playing football. So why not, you know,
- 32:39Speaker 2: give them a little love update first because there may
- 32:41Speaker 2: be folks that might be interested in that.
- 32:43Speaker 1: You know what Saturday night also was, Jake? Saturday was
- 32:47Speaker 1: the way bowl.
- 32:50Speaker 2: You see, in the Lone Star Conference, you had Angelo
- 32:53Speaker 2: State playing at Midwestern State. Angelo State, the alma mater
- 32:57Speaker 2: of Andy Way, the oldest son. Midwestern, the alma mater
- 33:02Speaker 2: of Jason Way, the younger son. And Angelo had dominated
- 33:05Speaker 2: the series in recent years, but not this past Saturday.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Those Midwestern State Mustangs got the victory off of that.
- 33:15Speaker 2: And I think they're a contender in the Lone Star.
- 33:17Speaker 2: They beat Angelo.
- 33:18Speaker 1: So, yeah. So, anyway, we started putting those in there. D2,
- 33:22Speaker 1: D3 games. Mary Harden Baylor.
- 33:24Speaker 2: 50 miles up the road in Belton and Harden Simmons,
- 33:29Speaker 2: who is nationally ranked. By the way, you see who
- 33:32Speaker 2: the new number one team in the nation is in
- 33:34Speaker 2: the FCS poll?
- 33:35Speaker 4: Oh, the Texans, right?
- 33:36Speaker 1: Tarleton. That's right.
- 33:39Speaker 2: A lot of people know him as Tarleton State, but
- 33:40Speaker 2: they've been really preferred to go by Tarleton. Tarleton is
- 33:43Speaker 2: the number one team in the nation in FCS. Number
- 33:47Speaker 2: two is Stephen F.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Austin. So the top two teams in what we used
- 33:50Speaker 1: to call 1AA, FCS, are both from the state of Texas.
- 33:54Speaker 2: And Trinity in San Antonio is highly ranked in D3,
- 33:57Speaker 2: as Mary Harden-Baylor is, as Harden-Simmons has been nationally ranked
- 34:07Speaker 2: this year.
- 34:08Speaker 4: I got to call UMHB when they were up at
- 34:11Speaker 4: Johns Hopkins for a quarterfinal back when I was living
- 34:13Speaker 4: in the D.C.
- 34:14Speaker 8: Area.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Really?
- 34:15Speaker 4: Yeah, a Division III quarterfinal. I was called in as
- 34:18Speaker 4: a fill-in to Duke Color. It was a lot of fun.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 34:22Speaker 4: Steve Stoffberg, who's the radio statistician for the Baltimore Ravens,
- 34:26Speaker 4: has been calling Hopkins football for a long time. He
- 34:28Speaker 4: does a great job.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Okay.
- 34:29Speaker 4: All right.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Okay.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Let's hear a little bit from the NFL side of things.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Cowboys lose again.
- 34:38Speaker 2: 23-13 to the Packers, who just kind of controlled a
- 34:41Speaker 2: lot of the line of scrimmage and dominated a lot
- 34:43Speaker 2: of the game. Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach, his
- 34:47Speaker 2: thoughts on the game.
- 34:48Speaker 9: I'm going to start with what I told the guys.
- 34:51Speaker 9: The effort is right. The fight is right. But mistakes
- 34:56Speaker 9: are killing us. You know, repeating mistakes is not what
- 35:03Speaker 9: we're about. But, you know, we got to protect the football.
- 35:05Speaker 9: Five turnovers in two games. You know, not very good.
- 35:12Speaker 9: Got to find a running game. It starts with myself
- 35:15Speaker 9: and the offensive staff. Got to get off the field
- 35:19Speaker 9: on third down on defense. you know, whether that's penalties
- 35:22Speaker 9: or just losing one-on-ones. So, you know, we got to
- 35:27Speaker 9: clean it up and lost two games in a row,
- 35:31Speaker 9: haven't played well, and got to.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Take a hard look at it. That starts with me.
- 35:35Speaker 2: The Cowboys drove the ball well on the first half,
- 35:37Speaker 2: but couldn't finish drives and had turnovers and things like that.
- 35:39Speaker 9: So why did the offense struggle? You know, again, I
- 35:42Speaker 9: just don't think we played very well. You know, I think,
- 35:45Speaker 9: you know, they did a good job. It's a really
- 35:46Speaker 9: good pass defense. I didn't plan on coming to this
- 35:49Speaker 9: game and having to throw it 54 times.
- 35:51Speaker 1: That wasn't the plan.
- 35:52Speaker 9: It's not a good recipe against this defense that's, you know,
- 35:57Speaker 9: been down against the run and, you know, pretty good
- 36:00Speaker 9: against the pass. So that wasn't a good recipe for us. But,
- 36:05Speaker 9: you know, that's the way the game turned out. And, again,
- 36:07Speaker 9: when I look back at the film, you know, I
- 36:11Speaker 9: think we put ourselves in some long-yarded situations that were hard.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Uh, Dak Prescott, of course, has had to deal with
- 36:18Speaker 2: that offensive inconsistency, and he's asked, what's gone wrong of.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Late with the offense?
- 36:23Speaker 10: Yeah, we gotta figure that out. Um, I wish I
- 36:25Speaker 10: could give you that answer at this time, um, but
- 36:28Speaker 10: that's what the, watching the film, see what wasn't done
- 36:31Speaker 10: or what wasn't executed, uh, efficiently. I know I had
- 36:33Speaker 10: plays out there that, that I went back that I
- 36:35Speaker 10: know direct, uh, directly correlated right in a turnover, and
- 36:39Speaker 10: us getting off the field on third down, and fourth
- 36:41Speaker 10: down on one of them, and Yeah, I don't have
- 36:44Speaker 10: the answer for the whole team and what that is,
- 36:47Speaker 10: but I believe in who we are and know we
- 36:51Speaker 10: have the talent, know we've got the men that care.
- 36:53Speaker 10: We've just got to put it together, and our process
- 36:55Speaker 10: is right, but we've got to win on Sunday.
- 36:57Speaker 1: There's some commonalities.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Folks have probably drawn some parallels between what's going wrong
- 37:01Speaker 2: with the Cowboys and what's going wrong with the Longhorns.
- 37:03Speaker 2: One common element of both is both offenses are getting
- 37:06Speaker 2: really thrown off by blitzing, and whether it's the offensive
- 37:10Speaker 2: line or the reach with the quarterback or whatever, The blitzes.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Are causing problems. So is he frustrated in seeing all
- 37:17Speaker 1: these blitzes?
- 37:18Speaker 10: Just frustrated not getting going, getting hit, getting blitzed as
- 37:22Speaker 10: part of the game, but not executing our answers for
- 37:25Speaker 10: it and only leaving the game with 13 points. One
- 37:29Speaker 10: of them came and one of the touchdowns came and,
- 37:31Speaker 10: you know, just trying to make something happen time. Yeah,
- 37:35Speaker 10: very frustrating, but we got to fix it. And all
- 37:38Speaker 10: the guys in that locker room are capable of it.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Meanwhile, the Texans handled the Blitz pretty well. Now, it
- 37:45Speaker 2: took a walk-off field goal by Kiami Fairbairn to win
- 37:49Speaker 2: their game over the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that was
- 37:51Speaker 2: 4-1 in leading the AFC South. The Texans were 1-4. Remember,
- 37:55Speaker 2: they started 0-4. Well, now they're 2-4 after the win.
- 37:58Speaker 2: D'Amico Ryans, pleased with a lot of his players, including
- 38:01Speaker 2: his quarterback, C.J.
- 38:02Speaker 8: Stroud.
- 38:03Speaker 5: CJ's been he's been hot all year. He's still he's
- 38:06Speaker 5: still hot. He's lighting it up. He's dishing the ball
- 38:08Speaker 5: around to a lot of different people. Doesn't matter who
- 38:11Speaker 5: it is. Everybody who has an opportunity, they're open. They're
- 38:15Speaker 5: getting the football. He's doing an outstanding job of just
- 38:18Speaker 5: leading his offense to put up over 30 points again.
- 38:22Speaker 5: I think this is the third time this year that
- 38:24Speaker 5: our offense has been able to do that. Credit to him,
- 38:26Speaker 5: the guy who's leading us, and also Coach Cayley.
- 38:28Speaker 7: He's done an outstanding job.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Yeah, he's been really pleased with what Nick Cayley has
- 38:32Speaker 1: done with the offense.
- 38:33Speaker 5: Overall, Coach Cayley has been doing a great job. Continue
- 38:35Speaker 5: to mix it up. Continue to get multiple guys to football.
- 38:39Speaker 5: Continue to keep teams off balance. I think the thing
- 38:42Speaker 5: that stood out to me today is just from the
- 38:44Speaker 5: play calling perspective, I always tell our guys it doesn't matter.
- 38:47Speaker 7: What play is called.
- 38:48Speaker 1: It's how you execute.
- 38:49Speaker 4: So they.
- 38:50Speaker 5: They heated us up with a lot of zero pressure,
- 38:53Speaker 5: and I really love how our guys responded to that.
- 38:56Speaker 5: Starting with CJ, the offensive line, we were able to
- 38:58Speaker 5: pick it up. And even when we had a guy free,
- 39:00Speaker 5: CJ was able to make some big-time plays to keep
- 39:03Speaker 5: us on the field, help us sustain drives.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Especially that game-winning drive. And CJ's Travels asked for his
- 39:09Speaker 2: mindset on that inside of two minutes to get them
- 39:12Speaker 2: in position to kick the game-winning field goal.
- 39:15Speaker 4: I was excited.
- 39:15Speaker 11: I got the ball back. You know, we tied game.
- 39:18Speaker 11: Let's go win the game. Just be aggressive. I thought
- 39:21Speaker 11: play calls were great right there. And, you know, Woody
- 39:24Speaker 11: gets that big-time play, and we get a seven-yard run
- 39:26Speaker 11: with Jawar. So, you know, I just– those moments, you know,
- 39:30Speaker 11: I try my best, you know, to stay calm and
- 39:32Speaker 11: even kill and, you know, try to, you know, put our.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Team in a position to win. Okay. All right.
- 39:37Speaker 2: So, yeah, Texans have won back-to-back games. Cowboys have lost
- 39:40Speaker 2: back-to-back games. Both teams are 2-4 as a result of that.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Longhorn's quarterback, Arch Manning, was asked– about the conversations, because
- 39:50Speaker 2: we heard this earlier, and we'll hear more from Sark
- 39:53Speaker 2: coming up in the next segment, but we heard him
- 39:55Speaker 2: talk about how he had a good conversation with Arch yesterday.
- 40:00Speaker 2: And so he was asked about those conversations and whether
- 40:04Speaker 2: he was assured of being the starter.
- 40:05Speaker 8: Yeah, I just told him that I fully expect myself
- 40:07Speaker 8: to play better, and I haven't put good film on
- 40:12Speaker 8: tape the past five weeks, and I'm going to be better.
- 40:16Speaker 8: And I'm going to be better for my teammates. I'm
- 40:17Speaker 8: going to be better for myself and be better for
- 40:19Speaker 8: the coaches.
- 40:19Speaker 2: And if he's going to be better, that means finding
- 40:22Speaker 2: a way to counter the blitz and all the things
- 40:24Speaker 2: he's seeing against the blitz.
- 40:26Speaker 8: I got to do a better job of handling the
- 40:27Speaker 8: pressures in the games. Our teams are going to keep
- 40:30Speaker 8: doing them. So I'll be better at that moving forward.
- 40:33Speaker 1: All right. There it is from Arch Manning.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Coming up, we're going to hear more from Longhorns head
- 40:37Speaker 2: coach Steve Sarkisian here on a Longhorns Monday on Sports
- 40:40Speaker 2: Radio AM 13 under the zone and EI Heart Radio app.
- 40:54Speaker 1: You know, that's kind of a message there. Let's go.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Let's get it going now. As I mentioned this morning
- 41:03Speaker 2: on our Longhorns Monday presentation, that when they lost Oklahoma,
- 41:12Speaker 2: we said all it did was narrow the margin for
- 41:18Speaker 2: error a little bit, but they were still in you know,
- 41:20Speaker 2: good shape for the college football playoff, even in decent
- 41:27Speaker 2: enough shape for the.
- 41:30Speaker 1: SEC championship game.
- 41:31Speaker 2: And had they won last Saturday, you'd still be able
- 41:34Speaker 2: to say that because of all the other upsets that
- 41:37Speaker 2: have been happening. But after the loss to Florida on Saturday,
- 41:41Speaker 2: it is realistic to say it's a long shot now
- 41:46Speaker 2: to be in the SEC championship game. If for no
- 41:48Speaker 2: other reason do the tiebreakers, you're going to, have to
- 41:50Speaker 2: rely on the fortunes and misfortunes of others. But the
- 41:53Speaker 2: most important thing is they got to get on the roll.
- 41:55Speaker 2: They've got to start winning a game. And their margin
- 41:59Speaker 2: for error in trying to be a college football playoff
- 42:02Speaker 2: participant has narrowed considerably. In fact, If you looked at the.
- 42:08Speaker 1: Bowl projections and the playoff projection, did you happen to
- 42:10Speaker 1: look at those today?
- 42:12Speaker 4: I saw on threes. I did not see the ones
- 42:14Speaker 4: that you and I like to look at together yet.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Well, Kyle Boniker and Mark Slayball. One of them has
- 42:20Speaker 2: Texas in the Las Vegas Bowl.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Against Arizona.
- 42:24Speaker 4: Well, that's not the way Texas wanted to go to
- 42:26Speaker 4: Las Vegas. No.
- 42:27Speaker 2: And then one of them had them in the Texas Bowl.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Maybe he gets Kansas or Kansas State, something like that.
- 42:34Speaker 2: He gets a Big 12 thing.
- 42:35Speaker 4: It's on the table. It's certainly a floor rather than
- 42:38Speaker 4: a ceiling.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Point of all of this is that they've got work
- 42:42Speaker 2: to do. As Spike Dykes used to say, he's got
- 42:44Speaker 2: some doing to do. And Spike's son had a good weekend. And,
- 42:49Speaker 2: you know, Sonny, TCU with that eyebrow-raising win in Waco
- 42:53Speaker 2: over Baylor, who.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Had been on a roll.
- 42:55Speaker 4: Yeah, that was a bit of a surprising result for me.
- 42:58Speaker 4: So there had been quite a few of these surprising results.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Over the weekend.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Meantime, Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, is to put all
- 43:08Speaker 2: this back in order and get his team performing well again. So,
- 43:13Speaker 2: Sark was asked about the fact that the team has
- 43:19Speaker 2: to get going and would it be reasonable to assume
- 43:24Speaker 2: after he mentioned in the post-game press conference on Saturday,
- 43:31Speaker 2: that everything was going to be evaluated. And because of that,
- 43:36Speaker 2: would it be reasonable to assume that we might see
- 43:38Speaker 2: some changes out of that as a result?
- 43:40Speaker 7: Well, I hope it's realistic.
- 43:42Speaker 6: That's our job, right? I mean, you know, I think
- 43:45Speaker 6: a season is a season, right? You're always striving to
- 43:48Speaker 6: make improvements on the journey of a season. And some
- 43:53Speaker 6: adjustments are more subtle than others. Um, obviously without disclosing
- 43:57Speaker 6: game planning and different things. Yeah. I think, I think
- 43:59Speaker 6: there'll be, there'll be adjustments made to what we do. Um,
- 44:04Speaker 6: and my expectation is that we will.
- 44:06Speaker 7: See better results.
- 44:07Speaker 12: Okay.
- 44:07Speaker 8: All right.
- 44:07Speaker 1: That's one thing.
- 44:08Speaker 2: Then he was asked for if it, what he's seeing
- 44:12Speaker 2: that's led to some of these offensive line breakdowns.
- 44:15Speaker 6: What's been a little frustrating from that is I think
- 44:18Speaker 6: we've done some good things running the ball. You know,
- 44:20Speaker 6: I mean, coming out of the first half Saturday, I was,
- 44:23Speaker 6: you know, felt pretty good about our ability.
- 44:25Speaker 7: To run the ball. Then, you know, you go three
- 44:28Speaker 7: and out, they have the ball.
- 44:29Speaker 6: I think we only ran, is it 17 or 19
- 44:32Speaker 6: plays in the second half? Something like that, 19 plays
- 44:35Speaker 6: in the second half. with some of those coming when
- 44:37Speaker 6: we were down by 10. So it's hard to say, hey,
- 44:40Speaker 6: let's go back to the run game and feature the
- 44:43Speaker 6: run game. So again, I think finding that right balance,
- 44:46Speaker 6: controlling the ball, we can help ourselves by converting on
- 44:51Speaker 6: third and shorts. I mean, think about fourth and one,
- 44:53Speaker 6: third and two, fourth and two, third and three. Like
- 44:56Speaker 6: those are really good situations to be in. We have
- 44:59Speaker 6: not capitalized the last two weeks in those scenarios. And again,
- 45:03Speaker 6: part of that is on us as coaches. I don't
- 45:06Speaker 6: think schematically in game plan wise that we put our
- 45:11Speaker 6: players in great positions to do well. On the flip
- 45:15Speaker 6: side of that, that does mean that we can't make
- 45:17Speaker 6: those plays and convert those situations. And we've got good
- 45:21Speaker 6: players and we expect them to perform in those moments.
- 45:23Speaker 6: And so that allows you to extend your eyes. That
- 45:27Speaker 6: allows you to go back to the run game and
- 45:29Speaker 6: do those things to find the rhythm that you had
- 45:31Speaker 6: in the first half. So I think it all adds
- 45:34Speaker 6: up to we can't give up on it by any
- 45:36Speaker 6: stretch of the imagination. I think that there are some
- 45:38Speaker 6: good things happening in the run game. Clearly, we'd like
- 45:42Speaker 6: to get more carries, but we didn't get as many
- 45:44Speaker 6: carries to continue the run game the way we would
- 45:46Speaker 6: have liked to in the second half.
- 45:48Speaker 1: All right. Now, they're going to go back to this
- 45:50Speaker 1: question that was somewhat answered when someone....
- 45:59Speaker 2: Let me just say this, and we'll get to all this.
- 46:04Speaker 2: and this is not limited to Steve Sarkeesian. I've heard
- 46:08Speaker 2: this with many, many coaches in different sports at different levels,
- 46:12Speaker 2: professional football, baseball, basketball, collegiate football, baseball, basketball. When you
- 46:21Speaker 2: have a media member asking a head coach about a
- 46:29Speaker 2: report from another media member, chances are, the reporter asking
- 46:35Speaker 2: the question is not going to get the answer that
- 46:37Speaker 2: they want when referring to another reporter's story. So what
- 46:42Speaker 2: happened was Pete Thamel had reported that KJ Lacey, there
- 46:51Speaker 2: would be an, the phraseology was an uptick in reps
- 46:57Speaker 2: in practice this week. So early in the press conference,
- 47:05Speaker 2: Sark was asked, do you have any comment on the
- 47:07Speaker 2: Pete Thamel report about KJ Lacey getting reps with the
- 47:14Speaker 2: ones in practice? And Sark's response was quick, direct, and,
- 47:19Speaker 2: and honest. He said, KJ gets reps with one every,
- 47:22Speaker 2: every day, every day in practice. So several questions on
- 47:26Speaker 2: down the line, the report, I think it was Anwar
- 47:31Speaker 2: Richardson who asked this, um.
- 47:33Speaker 1: I think this was maybe Danny Davis' follow-up. Oh, Danny's
- 47:36Speaker 1: follow-up about the report from Pete Thamel. He referred out
- 47:45Speaker 1: somebody else who asked the earlier question.
- 47:47Speaker 2: But then Danny asked as a follow-up on the Pete
- 47:51Speaker 2: Thamel question with that thing about uptick in reps with
- 47:56Speaker 2: the number ones.
- 47:57Speaker 7: He gets his first team reps. That's what he'll get.
- 48:00Speaker 7: So no more than normally expected? Not to me, but
- 48:03Speaker 7: we'll find out as the week goes.
- 48:05Speaker 1: There it is.
- 48:06Speaker 2: And remembering that, and I mentioned this last hour, the
- 48:09Speaker 2: big hay in the barn days for practice are Tuesday
- 48:12Speaker 2: and Wednesday.
- 48:14Speaker 1: That's why you have a media Zoom on Thursday. Because
- 48:17Speaker 1: then you can ask the head coach, did KJ Lacey wind.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Up getting more reps than perhaps you initially prepared for him?
- 48:30Speaker 2: Did it work out that way? Did he keep the
- 48:32Speaker 2: same amount of reps? Asking the question on Monday is
- 48:35Speaker 2: probably going to be unfulfilling for a reporter because the
- 48:40Speaker 2: head coach isn't going to say that much on a
- 48:42Speaker 2: Monday when they haven't had a morning go-through practice and
- 48:47Speaker 2: the good, the bad, and the ugly film session that
- 48:49Speaker 2: they always have. Tuesday and Wednesday are the heavy load
- 48:52Speaker 2: day practices. That's where you find out if players who
- 48:56Speaker 2: are banged up can go, who can't go, those things.
- 49:03Speaker 2: And performance-related issues. And you usually don't find those out
- 49:07Speaker 2: until you have to get done with the Wednesday practice.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Sarkis told me this on several occasions. Tuesday and Wednesday.
- 49:11Speaker 2: Matt Brown used to say the same thing. Every coach
- 49:14Speaker 2: that I've been a part of covering and broadcasting. And
- 49:19Speaker 2: that goes back... my first game in the in the
- 49:22Speaker 2: booth was actually when David McWilliams was the head coach
- 49:27Speaker 2: I was filling in as the analyst on the final
- 49:29Speaker 2: game of the 1991 season I've been the studio anchor
- 49:33Speaker 2: for four years from 88 through 91 um And I've
- 49:37Speaker 2: told this before that in 88 and 89, they had
- 49:39Speaker 2: the old Southwest Conference Radio Network. A concept which seemed
- 49:45Speaker 2: okay at the time. It would never fly today because
- 49:50Speaker 2: you wouldn't have the... Under that concept, if Texas is
- 49:55Speaker 2: playing Texas A & M and the game's in.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Austin, I would be calling the play-by-play for Texas.
- 50:02Speaker 2: my friend Andrew Monaco would be doing the color and
- 50:05Speaker 2: the same broadcast would go to both markets. Now Andrew
- 50:08Speaker 2: and I are friends and we could work together, but
- 50:11Speaker 2: that's not the way the networks are structured.
- 50:13Speaker 1: So, but in those days I was the studio anchor.
- 50:17Speaker 2: When you had those split broadcasts that were going to
- 50:20Speaker 2: both markets or combined broadcast, if you will. So I
- 50:24Speaker 2: had that in 88, 89, in 90 and 91, I
- 50:26Speaker 2: was a studio anchor, uh, in the same building in
- 50:33Speaker 2: Dallas for the following broadcast. Texas, Army, Navy, Pitt, Florida State,
- 50:41Speaker 2: and Alabama. So I would do like a pregame for
- 50:47Speaker 2: a late afternoon kick for Texas.
- 50:50Speaker 1: Blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Coming up, coming up, you'll hear from head coach David
- 50:56Speaker 2: McWilliams when Longhorn football continues. Then studio producer, my head
- 50:59Speaker 2: coach says, stand by, you got a halftime for Navy.
- 51:02Speaker 2: come back in the navy broadcast center halftime i'll tell
- 51:06Speaker 2: you look at the rest of the patriot league this
- 51:08Speaker 2: afternoon yada yada yada get done with that all right
- 51:12Speaker 2: you got a post game for army coming up and
- 51:14Speaker 2: it went like that every saturday from like 10 in
- 51:17Speaker 2: the morning till 10 at night sometimes later sometimes earlier
- 51:20Speaker 2: even so you would do that so 1991 i was
- 51:23Speaker 2: in my fourth year about that and um then I
- 51:30Speaker 2: got to ask, do you want to fill in as
- 51:32Speaker 2: the analyst on the Texas-Texas A & M game working
- 51:34Speaker 2: with Jerry Truppiano? Bill Schoening was going to go to
- 51:37Speaker 2: New York to do the play-by-play for the preseason in IT.
- 51:41Speaker 1: So I said, sure.
- 51:43Speaker 2: And what I didn't know at the time was that
- 51:45Speaker 2: Jerry Truppiano was leaving to go to work for the
- 51:47Speaker 2: Boston Red Sox. So Bill Schoening was going to be
- 51:50Speaker 2: moved over to play-by-play. And what I didn't know, and
- 51:53Speaker 2: they didn't want to tell me, and they told me later,
- 51:54Speaker 2: is that they were auditioning me for the analyst role
- 51:58Speaker 2: by letting me actually Work a game.
- 52:01Speaker 1: So I did.
- 52:02Speaker 2: So the first coach I ever, when I was working
- 52:06Speaker 2: a broadcast for, was David McWilliams. And then it was
- 52:09Speaker 2: John Makovic. Then it was Mack Brown. Then it was
- 52:14Speaker 2: Charlie Strong. Then it was Tom Herman. And now, of course,
- 52:19Speaker 2: is Steve Sarkeesian. Point being about all of this is
- 52:23Speaker 2: that coaches have always been the same about that. Telling
- 52:28Speaker 2: you what they feel comfortable in telling you, especially early
- 52:34Speaker 2: in the week and telling you, this was the other
- 52:37Speaker 2: point about this, that the meat and potatoes days of
- 52:43Speaker 2: practice are Tuesday and Wednesday. And when you come out
- 52:47Speaker 2: of the Wednesday practice, that's when they have a pretty
- 52:50Speaker 2: good feel for who might play more than others, if
- 52:56Speaker 2: somebody's banged up and somebody that Might need to take
- 53:01Speaker 2: a seat. But you got to wait for those practices
- 53:03Speaker 2: to happen. You're not going to find out that much
- 53:06Speaker 2: on Monday on that. So that's the whole point about that.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Okay.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Next, he was asked about the running game issues and
- 53:16Speaker 2: how can those run game issues be corrected.
- 53:20Speaker 6: We got to come up with some schemes that put
- 53:21Speaker 6: our guys in more optimal situations and then the players
- 53:25Speaker 6: have a belief in what we call. I do think
- 53:28Speaker 6: I look for a real uptick there. You know, it's
- 53:31Speaker 6: like anything that you have as a staff. You know,
- 53:34Speaker 6: when you have issues and sometimes you're trying to see
- 53:38Speaker 6: it all and maybe there is a glaring need of
- 53:42Speaker 6: something to be adjusted, but you miss it. Sometimes you
- 53:44Speaker 6: miss it. It's like a scotoma. It's like a blind
- 53:46Speaker 6: spot that you can get. And all of a sudden,
- 53:49Speaker 6: it rears its ugly head. Now you pour a lot
- 53:51Speaker 6: of emphasis into it. Generally, as coaches, like as I said,
- 53:55Speaker 6: we get what we emphasize. And this has been a
- 53:57Speaker 6: big emphasis of ours yesterday, today, as we pour into
- 54:00Speaker 6: this week. We know we're going to need it this week.
- 54:03Speaker 6: We need to extend drives. We need to keep their
- 54:05Speaker 6: offense off the field. So I think we'll have a
- 54:07Speaker 6: good plan ready to go and expect our guys to
- 54:10Speaker 6: do well and execute in those moments.
- 54:12Speaker 1: All right.
- 54:14Speaker 2: Coaches always say, that if you're really doing well, you
- 54:18Speaker 2: play like you practice. And what's mystifying to coaches is
- 54:23Speaker 2: when you practice well during the week and then it
- 54:26Speaker 2: doesn't show on the field in games. Remember Sark said
- 54:31Speaker 2: last Wednesday it was one of their best practices, maybe
- 54:33Speaker 2: their best practice of this particular football team. So why
- 54:39Speaker 2: is his offense practicing better than they're showing on Saturday?
- 54:44Speaker 6: Sometimes i think as players you know there's two things
- 54:48Speaker 6: one we have to do a better job of taking
- 54:52Speaker 6: practice to the game and and that's not just on
- 54:55Speaker 6: offense that's on special teams that's on defense because some
- 54:58Speaker 6: of those same things like the touchdown they throw to
- 55:01Speaker 6: the tight end over the middle we practice that play
- 55:04Speaker 6: four times during the week and then against that call
- 55:08Speaker 6: And then all of a sudden it comes in the
- 55:10Speaker 6: game and we got three guys guarding a running back
- 55:12Speaker 6: and nobody guarding a tight end over the middle of
- 55:14Speaker 6: the field.
- 55:16Speaker 7: Same things offensively.
- 55:18Speaker 6: It's hard to point out specific runs to you guys,
- 55:21Speaker 6: but we're calling specific runs and we're not blocking them
- 55:25Speaker 6: the way that we practice those exact plays in practice
- 55:28Speaker 6: during the week. So we have to do a better
- 55:30Speaker 6: job taking practice to the game. And having a sense
- 55:35Speaker 6: of belief and confidence that what you're doing is the
- 55:38Speaker 6: right thing to do.
- 55:39Speaker 7: That's the first part. The second part is, you know, when.
- 55:44Speaker 6: There's a standard and expectation of performance, sometimes we can
- 55:49Speaker 6: try too hard and we can start chasing plays as
- 55:53Speaker 6: opposed to just executing the play that you have. So
- 55:56Speaker 6: I think we need to settle down a little bit
- 55:57Speaker 6: offensively and just execute the play and let the flow
- 56:01Speaker 6: of the game happen. Do it at a high level,
- 56:03Speaker 6: but just execute the play. We don't need to change
- 56:05Speaker 6: the play.
- 56:06Speaker 12: All right.
- 56:06Speaker 2: Next, he was asked, you know, again, we'll find out
- 56:10Speaker 2: Colin Simmons' status, although he's probably expected to be out
- 56:14Speaker 2: with that high ankle sprain. But if we are to
- 56:18Speaker 2: assume that he's unavailable, how will the defense change without
- 56:23Speaker 2: Simmons on the field?
- 56:24Speaker 7: Well, you know, we've got good players.
- 56:26Speaker 6: And I think that, you know, when you think about
- 56:29Speaker 6: Lance Jackson, you think about the growth of a Richard
- 56:32Speaker 6: Wesley and obviously Zena, the versatility of Raheem Biles and
- 56:36Speaker 6: what he can do and all of the guys on
- 56:38Speaker 6: the interior defensive front. You know, I think Coach Muschamp
- 56:42Speaker 6: does a good job of calling defenses predicated on the
- 56:45Speaker 6: guys that are on the field and putting those guys
- 56:48Speaker 6: in a position to play really good defense. And, you know,
- 56:51Speaker 6: Saturday was unfortunate because, gosh, we just got a little
- 56:55Speaker 6: leaky in the run game.
- 56:56Speaker 7: Wasn't bad.
- 56:56Speaker 6: I mean, we just, the kid had 25 carries for
- 56:59Speaker 6: 95 yards, you know, so it wasn't like they were
- 57:02Speaker 6: just shredding us, but it was the incremental three yards,
- 57:05Speaker 6: five yards, four yards, then one run spits out, which
- 57:08Speaker 6: we really felt like should have been a dead play.
- 57:10Speaker 1: And then.
- 57:11Speaker 6: Our inability on defense to get off the field in
- 57:14Speaker 6: the second half right i think was of importance and
- 57:17Speaker 6: so it's using the people that are on the field
- 57:19Speaker 6: at that time to call things according to the strength
- 57:22Speaker 6: of the people that are on the field i think
- 57:23Speaker 6: coach muschamp does a great.
- 57:24Speaker 1: Job of that All right. We'll hear more from Sark
- 57:27Speaker 1: coming up next hour.
- 57:27Speaker 2: We've got more coming up right here on Sports Radio
- 57:29Speaker 2: AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 57:31Speaker 1: What do you tell me, Jake?
- 57:34Speaker 2: Is this like the mantra that a lot of Longhorn
- 57:36Speaker 2: fans are following? I got my one drink, I tell
- 57:39Speaker 2: you my heartache medication. Is that what you're saying here?
- 57:41Speaker 4: It might be what I'm saying.
- 57:43Speaker 1: All right. Actually, it's the music of John Pardee, correct?
- 57:48Speaker 4: Yep.
- 57:50Speaker 2: We're going to give away some tickets to see John
- 57:53Speaker 2: Pardee at the country music event that iHeart's part of
- 57:56Speaker 2: coming up in November. We're going to do that tomorrow
- 58:00Speaker 2: when we're out at Boulevard Social.
- 58:03Speaker 1: And that's the new sports bar. We're excited to be
- 58:06Speaker 1: out there tomorrow.
- 58:08Speaker 2: And it's on North Lamar, 6215 North Lamar. So if
- 58:12Speaker 2: you think, like, if I'm going up North Lamar and
- 58:17Speaker 2: I'm passing, like, Dan's Hamburgers, and I'm passing the old
- 58:21Speaker 2: driver's license. Yeah, go up that way. He's going up
- 58:25Speaker 2: to be up that way, up Lamar. 6215 North Lamar.
- 58:32Speaker 2: That's where Boulevard Social is. Right by Style Switch, too.
- 58:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 58:36Speaker 2: So if you're up that way, right? So, yes, we're excited,
- 58:41Speaker 2: and we're going to be there. We'll look forward to
- 58:43Speaker 2: being there tomorrow night. I mean, tomorrow afternoon. Two to five,
- 58:49Speaker 2: regular show, two to five. But, you know, if you're
- 58:54Speaker 2: at a sports bar and there's food and drink involved,
- 59:01Speaker 2: you know, Mark Henry's going to be there.
- 59:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I had a feeling about that.
- 59:05Speaker 2: Well, we couldn't have it any other way. We wouldn't
- 59:07Speaker 2: want it any other way. Got to have the big man.
- 59:10Speaker 8: There.
- 59:10Speaker 2: So we'll have Mark Henry there with us. And, of course,
- 59:13Speaker 2: Mike Hardball-Hard. You know, one of my more amusing little
- 59:18Speaker 2: pastimes is to watch those two go at it.
- 59:21Speaker 1: They're kind of funny, you know, when they get after
- 59:23Speaker 1: one another.
- 59:24Speaker 2: In some ways, it kind of reminds me when Bill
- 59:27Speaker 2: Shoning and I hosted a show for four years on
- 59:29Speaker 2: this radio station together.
- 59:30Speaker 1: From 97 through 2001.
- 59:32Speaker 2: And when Bill left to go to the Spurs, there
- 59:36Speaker 2: were folks that were going to miss you guys, you know,
- 59:38Speaker 2: arguing like an old married couple, because we'd occasionally pop
- 59:42Speaker 2: up like that.
- 59:43Speaker 1: We'd do that.
- 59:44Speaker 4: Over what?
- 59:46Speaker 1: Oh, just various topics.
- 59:47Speaker 4: Pop culture or sports, both?
- 59:49Speaker 1: All of the above. Music, you know, lots of different things, yeah. So, hearing.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Why could Mark do that? It's kind of fun.
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: Well, you know, the latest argument they had.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Well, what's this one now?
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: Saturday morning, Mark showed up at 630 for Longhorn's game day.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: Well, he didn't start till late.
- 1:00:11Speaker 8: Exactly.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: Harge told him 630.
- 1:00:13Speaker 9: Why?
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Was Harge thinking seven was like show up at 6.30,
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: be there and be in position because it would be seven?
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: Harge didn't remember saying 6.30. I remember him saying 6.30.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: You do?
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: Yeah, so does Cameron. So does Mark Henry who came
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: at 6.30 and helped me out.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: So all of you then corroborated Mark's take on that.
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: And Mark was holding two flashlights for me because we
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: were setting up. It was pitch black.
- 1:00:38Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: And Mark was a great helper down there.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: That's good. That's good.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: He's always great. He's a great human being. You know,
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: I got up at six on Saturday morning. I have
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: people ask me quite often, you know, how early do
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: you get to the stadium?
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: And I.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: Try to shoot for four hours prior to kick. And
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: for people say, why so early? First of all, four
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: hours prior to kick is three hours prior to air.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Network pregame starts one hour before kick. Three hours prior
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: to air means.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: Two hours and 15 minutes until I pop on with
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: you guys. Because in this case, with an 11 a.m.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: kick and a 10 a.m. network air time, that would
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: mean an 8 a.m. start time for Longhorn's game day,
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: which means I would be on at 8.15, Roger and I,
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: from the booth. We check in about 15 minutes into
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: the broadcast up there. That way you can hear We
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: have some exchange. We talk about that. We make sure
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: we get the meal checklist from Mark. And then it's
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: not long after that that I go down to the
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: field to get ready to do the pregame interview with Sark.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: And I always enjoy that because he has a really
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: good feel for the game when we get there that
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: close to kickoff. And I think people know this. This
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: isn't any.
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: Weird revelation. But this goes all the way back. There's
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: a lot of coaches. You deal with it with high school.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: A lot of coaches who want to record their pregame
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: interview not on game day. They're too busy or things
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: are getting too hectic or they can't do it when
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: it would fit your schedule before.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: You have to get up schedule.
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: So there were in the past times I was recording
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: the pregame interview three days before kickoff. Now, we always
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: had the right to update it if something changed.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Drastic happened and changed.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: And it started off like that the first year with
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: Sark and then he made the suggestion. He said, what
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: would you think about recording it, say, about an hour
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: 45 to kick? You know, I hit the field two
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: hours before. I do one walk around the field. I
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: stop and I call my parents when he gets three
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: quarters of the way around the field. And then I
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: come in after that and then we can do it then.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: And I'm like, I'd be all about that. And he said,
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: I'll be better too because I'll be more in a
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: game mode.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: And he has been.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: It's been great. And I found that later. He got
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: that from, of all people, Nick Saban. Saban used to
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: do that. And you wouldn't think that. You think Saban
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: being so strict and tight and all that. No, he
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: liked doing that too. And I remember when I was
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: the analyst on Longhorn Football and Basketball Broadcast when Bill
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Schoening was doing the play-by-play. Back then is when I
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: started doing the opposing coach feature like we have today.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: I started doing it back in the day.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: And a lot of times, Back in the day, in
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: the 90s, even in early 2000s, coaches would agree to
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: do it. I could do an opposing coach interview like
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: we did with Jeff Traylor. But now it's gotten to
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: the point where a lot of coaches don't do it.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: But you do have more access to high-quality audio from
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: their press.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: Conferences during the week.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: And that usually works out well enough because you're giving
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: folks an overview of the team.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: Well, when I was doing that back in.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: The day, we used to do it for basketball as well.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: And one guy who liked, who never minded doing the
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: opposing coach interview with me was Dean Smith, the immortal
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Dean Smith, the coach of North Carolina. It gave him,
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: from what I was told, a couple, it gave him
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: like a little bit of a distraction. He had to
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: worry about getting in the locker room with the team
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: That was one thing.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: And also we'd get around the corner at the Irwin
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: Center where he could light up a cigarette too, you know,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: so he could have a smoke.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: Would do that, so he'd.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: Do that, and I still do it on occasion, do the,
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: Rick Barnes, when, when Texas plays Tennessee, Rick has always
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: been gracious, we've worked together for 16 years, so he's
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: always great about doing an interview with me, and he,
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: and he has done one, when Texas played Marquette, Shaka Smart, obviously,
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: since he was coaching, playing Ole Miss, Chris Beard, has
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: done it. So the former head coaches and we know
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: each other and all that kind of stuff. So it's,
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: it's always, you know, worked out that way. That's just
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: how some of the machinations work within the broadcast world.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: One question here on the text line before we go
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: to break that said, I find it boggling.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: There's so many games, three in a row where the
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: first offensive drive results and driving down the field with
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: ease and scoring. Is that a result of a scripted drive?
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: And if so, why not more script drives?
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: What do you think, Craig? Well, One correction, the Oklahoma game,
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: they didn't score on the first drive. Remember, there was
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: like three three and outs on both sides before Texas
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: did get in the end zone first. They didn't score
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: on the first drive. However, you are correct in that
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: there are scripted plays out for the first drive, and
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: there was for the Florida game, and there was for
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: the Tennessee game. I think it's a variety of things. Yes,
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: it works well according to script, but also you're taking
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: advantage of the defense not yet having adjusted to what
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: you're doing. And I think that's part of as well,
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: but it's a really good question. In fact, in fact,
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: I'm going to ask Sark that when we record Longhorn
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: weekly this week, I'll say, is there something, uh, about
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: a degree of effectiveness? Do you have a number on
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: it that would tell you when a team has the
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: first scripted out series that they do better than the
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: other ones? Uh, And it works the other way, too,
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: because a lot of coaches do it, and then does
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: your defense have time to adjust and make the stops?
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: It's a valid question. All right, we'll be back to
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: wrap up our number two on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: Third and final hour of the program here on Sports
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Radio AM 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: Craig Way with you. Alongside the producer, Jay Carman. Glad
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: you're with us as well.
- 1:06:50Speaker 10: And.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: We're going to take you up until 5 o'clock here.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: And again, tomorrow, like I said, we're going to be
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: at Boulevard Social. That's the brand-new sports bar up on
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: North Lamar at 6215 North Lamar. We'll give away tickets
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: to the Ole Miss game this Saturday. We'll also give
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: away tickets to see John Pardee in concert as part
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: of the country music event that's coming up in November.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: So we'll do that as well. Coming up in a
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: few minutes, we'll hear more from Head Coach Steve Sarkisian.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: We'll hear more from Brian Schottenheimer following the Cowboys' loss.
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: Last night to the Packers. We'll hear more from Namiko
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: Ryans following the Texans win. You know, the Texans started 0-4.
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: And here they are at 2-4. And they're two games
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: back of Jacksonville, who leads the division. But they just
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: beat the Jaguars. And they get another shot against them
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: coming up. And that'll be a home game. So they're
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: not dead by any stretch. You contrast that to a
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: team like the Rams who are two and four after
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: that crazy inexplicable loss to the, well, it is explicable.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: You can explain it and I will in a minute
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: to the Cardinals yesterday. They're two and four and they're
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: pretty much done. I mean, if the 49ers beat the
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: Commanders tonight and most expect that to happen, if the
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: 49ers win, and I'm expecting, I just, I need Kittle to,
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: Get a couple of touchdowns for me.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: Uh-oh.
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: We're on opposite sides of this thing, Craig. I've got
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: my lead and Kittle's putting it in danger.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: Okay. Well, and a good friend and the commissioner of
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: our league has McLaurin. And he's leading me by five points. So.
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: You think 24 is enough for me? Kittle's the only
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: one left.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:08:49Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: That's the hope.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: I think you're in good shape. Anyway... If the 49ers win,
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: they go to 5-0.
- 1:08:56Speaker 12: Right?
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: Is it 5-0? They'd be 6-0.
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: 6-0. Yeah. Okay. All right. So they'd be 6-0. The
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: Rams would be four games behind them and not even
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: having the tiebreaker. So they'd be dead.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: In the water, the division still only came back as Seattle.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: But the point is, is that the, they would be
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: in peril in terms of the wild card race too. Um,
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: not that anybody else, the other divisions are lighting it up.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: I mean, after all the giants are leading the NFC
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: East at a robust three, two, and one right now.
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: Uh, that's like the big 10 West this year, the
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: NFC East.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: So, um, anyway, point being that it's, uh, There are
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: differences in the way the numbers can look. So at 2-4,
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: the Texans are not dead. And for that matter, the Cowboys. 2-4,
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: making a mess of things. But still only, what, a
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: game and a half out of first in the NFC
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: East because the Giants are 3-2-1.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: So, yeah.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: I mean, there's a ways to go on all of
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: this for a lot of them. So anyway, there's that. Tomorrow,
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: the NBA season starts. So I'm here to ask you,
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: are the Knicks going to repeat?
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: Oh, no, we haven't seen a repeat champ in a
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: while in the NBA. I don't think the Knicks will
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: break that trend. The East is too tough this year,
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: I think.
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. I mean, will Philadelphia adding LeBron make a
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: difference there? Will they get better? Pass them.
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: I think so. It's not just about LeBron. I think
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: it's about the roster they built. LeBron doesn't have to
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: play heavy minutes going into the season. I'll kind of
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: stick with what Mark Henry and I talked about over
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: the summer. We really like what the Sixers have coming in.
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: I'm not ready to make them an NBA Finals favorite.
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: I think they'll be a top five seed. So the
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: Sixers play the Knicks tomorrow evening.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: That'll be fun.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: There are three games being televised by NBC. The first
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: one is at 2 in the afternoon. Boston at Detroit.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: We'll be out at Boulevard Social and they'll have that
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: game on, on the big screen.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: So you'll have live basketball going on there.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: And then the night game, which I'm definitely watching this.
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: Me too.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: Oklahoma City at San Antonio. So Spurs Thunder.
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: Give me that once a week. Yeah.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: I'm in. Yeah.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: Remember the Spurs taking out the Thunder last year. So
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: everybody else, opens up on Wednesday, the rest of the league.
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: If you are a Mavericks fan, if you are a
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: Rockets fan, get ready for that one. Dallas and Houston
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: on Wednesday night. So that's where those two teams will
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: open the season.
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: Craig, do not adjust your eyes. The Wizards are favored
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: in their opener.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Hey, there you go.
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: Against the Bucs of all teams.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: Yeah, well, wow. How about that?
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: So, anyway, NBA does get started tomorrow night. College basketball,
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: the AP preseason poll has come out. And your Texas
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: Longhorns are number seven in the country in the preseason poll.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: Florida is number one. Expected that. Overwhelming number one pick.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: they got 47 of the 59 first place votes. It's
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: the first time they've been on top since the final
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: poll two years ago when they beat Houston to win
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: their national title. So Florida's number one, followed by Duke, Illinois, UConn, Arizona,
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: Michigan State, then Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, and Houston to round
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: out the top 10. Second time begins with Louisville, followed
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: by Arkansas, St. John's, Miami, Gonzaga, Michigan, kansas iowa state
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: texas tech and alabama in the final five in the
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: poll uh usc ucla kentucky vanderbilt byu kentucky's 23rd and
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: no north carolina in the top 25 in preseason do.
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: You see the news from earlier today with the jayhawks
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: adding trey kaufman ren yep tkr five five years in
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: college basketball drafted into the nba wins his court case.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: Yeah yeah so there you go so you're gonna have uh.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: More uh grumbling about that that sort of thing so
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: anyway uh there's a couple other topics as well um
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: our Longhorn fan in Denton was the one who was
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: asking me the question about uh the scripted thing by
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: the way speaking of Denton you know um Neil Brown's
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: done a pretty good job at North Texas considering the
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: entire roster was gutted when Eric Morris left and went
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: to Stillwater to take over the Oklahoma State job and
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: took Drew Mestemaker with him and took Michael Hawkins and
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: took wide receivers and took linemen. And North Texas had
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: 53 new faces, I think, this year.
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: Yeah, Denton North has fared a lot better than Ames East.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: No, no, no, not Denton North. UNT Stillwater. That's what
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: a lot of.
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: People up in Denton are referring to. Oklahoma State is
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: UNT Stillwater. There you go.
- 1:14:18Speaker 4: Keep the letters.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: UNT Stillwater. And they played a really good ball game,
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: came up on the short end against Houston.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: Heck of a game on Saturday night.
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: And they beat a bottom 10 team.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. That's right.
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: So, anyway, we'll keep an eye on those things as
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: well coming up. Okay, I'm going to tell you that
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: we're going to... Oh, there's one other thing I wanted
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: to get to, high school football. Now, We're starting to
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: come down the homestretch of the regular season in high
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: school football.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Then we get to the playoffs.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: And it's six weeks of playoffs, including the state championship week,
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: the final week. Forever and ever and ever and ever
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: and ever in Texas high school football. From the time
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: teams started playing football, there has been one ironclad, unchangeable rule.
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: and I'll get to in a moment, but I want
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: to read a couple of things. The UIL Legislative Council
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: had their meeting.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: You know, there are.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: People who believe, there are people who believe this because
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: they don't know any better, and it's not their fault.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: Really, I guess, unless they want to do a little
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: deeper dive.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: But the UIL, the University Interscholastic League, which governs all
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: interscholastic extracurricular activities, or governs a lot of them anyway,
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: the ones that are sanctioned in the state of Texas,
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: the people in the building over on Mainer Road are
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: not the ones who make all the rules about all this.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: The policy comes from its legislative council, which is made
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: up of superintendents and school administrators across the state of Texas.
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: They are the ones who make the policy. The UIL
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: enforces it. But they do have legislative council meetings every October.
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: and they had some, and here's the results that have
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: come out that this, they met yesterday and they got
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: some changes coming up. Um, first of all, they approved
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: a proposal for home field advantage for the first round
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: of the playoffs in all classifications, in all team sports
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: beginning next season, 20, 27, 2020.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: We're already seeing it in football.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: Um, But now it's in every sport in every classification
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: for the postseason starting next year.
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: I like it. Regular season means more.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: Yeah. So there you go. Here's other changes.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: Distance of 4A girls cross country will increase to 5,000
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: meters beginning in 2028, 2029. Junior high, middle school cross
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: country meet. Start times will now be allowed to take
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: place in the morning as a result of actions taken
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: by the council.
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: You ever call it a cross country meet?
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: No, I have done state track meet before, but not
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: cross country.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: Legislative council also passed a proposal to allow teams in
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: 1A and 2A to participate in 4A team tennis beginning
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: next year. Team tennis pairings came out yesterday. The state
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: team tennis meets come out. Congratulations to Westwood. They're always
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: good in it. And they made the final four in
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: that again. So, because they don't have team tennis down
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: at the 1A and 2A level. 3A teams are currently
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: allowed to play in 4A team tennis, and now they're
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: going to add 1A and 2A into that too. They
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: also passed a couple more proposals regarding athletics. One, the
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: development of girls' flag football as a pilot program. They
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: established no more than two classifications to begin no earlier
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: than 2028, 2029, so a couple years off.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: So there'd be an upper classification, lower classification for girls
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: flag football. Wow.
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: Put the championships at Jerry World.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Why not?
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: The UIO will gather information for rules and guidelines of
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: the pilot program to be considered at subsequent legislative council meetings.
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: Now, here's a big one. The adoption of a 35-second
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: shot clock for basketball.
- 1:18:28Speaker 8: Oh, wow.
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: I love that.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: Now, it's not going to start until 2028, 2029 for
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: varsity games.
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: And it will be adopted with the proposed implementation plan. Now, listen,
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: and there's a reason for this, and I'll explain it here.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: In 5A and 6A schools, no earlier than 2028, 2029.
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: So that's two years off.
- 1:18:46Speaker 8: 3A and 4A.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: No earlier than 2030, 2031.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: That's four years off. And 1A and 2A, no earlier
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: than 2032, 2033. That's six years off. Six more years
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: of the four corners offense.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: Yeah. But here's why.
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: It gives those very small schools time to plan for
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: this and find the funding. You know, when people say, oh,
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: they got to have a shot clock. Are you willing
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: to pay for the person that has to operate it?
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: Are you willing to pay for the technology to do it?
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: That's a problem. You've got 1A high schools in the
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: panhandle that are so small, they don't even have football,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: but they do have basketball. But if you're asking them,
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: you now have to budget. You have to add the
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: technology and you have to budget for somebody to run
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: a shot clock i know lots of high schools have
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: trouble finding somebody just to keep the book or run
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: the scoreboard or the pa at 5a and 6a schools
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: so it gives them time to plan for.
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: This yeah that's good that's necessary yeah as i always
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: thought if they could do it in north dakota the
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: uil can do it in texas.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: Apples and oranges north dakota has how many high schools
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: oh a couple hundred.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: Maybe 250, 200, as opposed to 1500.
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: But I was just, I.
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: Was just amazed at the small schools that were able
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: to do it. Cause there are one, a panhandle level,
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: small schools that they'll have. What a Texas panhandle high
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: school has at a high school K through 12. That'll
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: be the enrollment.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Some of these.
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: Yeah. And that's how it is at some of those
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: out there. So anyway, you don't give them a chance.
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: So there's no changes, those changes. And then there was
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: one more, just a paragraph at the bottom. And I
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: just happened to scan at the bottom.
- 1:20:26Speaker 9: Hmm.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: How about this? Additionally, the Legislative Council passed a proposal
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: to allow linear football broadcast on Friday nights in the
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: regular season when mutually agreed upon by both schools. What
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: does that mean? That means you could, under that.
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: Rule, watch Lake Travis and Westlake on KXAN Friday night,
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: which you can't do right now. You can watch on
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: KXAN Plus streaming, and they will have it available stream only.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: This all started during the pandemic when they began to
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: allow streaming telecast. Now, they moved over that final. They
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: crossed the Rubicon on that because that was always the
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: thing for years when I was doing the games on
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: Fox Sports Southwest. That was their big directive. They wanted
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: to have an exclusive Friday night game. And the Legislative
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: Council was always against it. And part of the reason
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: they were against it was you had a superintendent- in
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: Tyler that was concerned that if you had Midland Lee
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: and Odessa Permian on, then it might keep fans away
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: from their home game against Longview, which I think is
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: a little far-fetched.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: But there might be some that might do that.
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: And maybe some folks might stay in to watch Tyler
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: Lee against Lufkin instead of John Tyler against Longview. You
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: can make examples all the way around. But I will
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: tell you this. streaming is to the point now where
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: people can just watch on a regular TV. You know,
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: when I've been at home Friday nights, I've watched some
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: of the games that you've done. I've just turned on
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: my TV and then flip on YouTube. I didn't have
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: to pull up a laptop or an iPad or even
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: my phone. I didn't have to do that. I was
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: watching on TV. So there's been a workaround going on
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: for the past few years where folks could actually watch
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: a real telecast on television.
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: They just had to stream it.
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: Smart TVs.
- 1:22:16Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: So now the pretense is being stripped away from that.
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: So now linear television starting next year is going to
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: arrive for Friday night regular season Texas high school football games, which,
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: by the way, has been going on all across the country.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: But the superintendents, it wasn't, as.
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: I point out, it's not five people in the building
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: over on Mainer Road who've been doing this. These are
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: the superintendents that make up the legislative council across the
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: state of Texas who are always resistant to it. And
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: to a certain extent, some of the coaches were as well.
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: Everybody's on board with it.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: Yeah. And I know people my kind of my age
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: broadcasting peers that work for independent school districts in Texas.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: Sure.
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: And all of their games right now are streamed. I'm
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: thinking about how this impacts them. They probably get a
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: bigger audience.
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: They might.
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: But I mean, can you tell me that a 4A
- 1:23:05Speaker 2: school is definitely going to wind up on a local
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: television over the air?
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: Maybe.
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: Depends where they are.
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: Depends on where they are. Depends on the impact of
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: the game. But what it does do is open the option.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: I'll give you an example.
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: There could be an outstanding game played. I'm going to
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: ask Greg Tepper about this.
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: Tepper will be on with us Wednesday this week instead
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: of Tuesday because we'll be at Boulevard Social tomorrow. But
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: I'm going to ask him about this. One of the
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: games in this state that has a chance, I'm going
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: to say a chance, I'm not saying it's a definite,
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: but it has a chance to be a really good game.
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: It's happening in this area on Friday night, and it's
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: not Westlake like Travis, although that's always a great game
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: and probably will be.
- 1:23:53Speaker 8: No, no.
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Gerald against Stephenville.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: Stephenville, number one in the state, defending state champs and unbeaten.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: Gerald, unbeaten. The game's at Gerald Friday night.
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: Now, I think there may be a streaming platform that
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: it may be available on TubeWatch, but point being is
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: that going forward in the future, if they wanted to
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: put it on KXN or KBVO or KMVA, you know,
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: on their CW, whatever, they could do that starting next year.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: They could put a game like that on there.
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: So, that's, you know, with all of these other rule
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: changes that came down and there's significant policy changes. This one,
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: I think, is very significant as well that you could see,
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: you know, even with shot clock being implemented and all
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: these kinds of things. I do think That where you
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: could watch live football on over-the-air TV will be big.
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: Because that's what we have in the playoffs. You're allowed
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: to do it in the playoffs. Because that's not part
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: of the regular season schedule. And the school districts don't
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: have control over that. The UIL controls all rights to
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: the playoffs.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: Now, they.
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: turn key it to the school districts, and you've got
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: to have permission on both sides to televise, but there's
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: no rule prohibiting a live telecast of a playoff game
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: like there has been for the regular season.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: That will change next year.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: All right, coming up, we're going to hear more from
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, and from the Texans and
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: Cowboys when we continue on 1300 The Zone.
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: For a 49-yard field goal drive from inside of.
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: The pass for Kaimi Fairbairn.
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: Here's the spot. Here's Fairbairn's kick.
- 1:25:37Speaker 12: It is good, and the Texans take down the Jaguars
- 1:25:41Speaker 12: in London.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: What a day.
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: 34-31.
- 1:25:44Speaker 12: Fairbairn, as time expires, Houston wins. Back-to-back, and they are
- 1:25:51Speaker 12: so back. The Texans and Liberty White mob each other
- 1:25:58Speaker 12: in celebration. The job got done the hard way, but
- 1:26:06Speaker 12: they accomplished the feat, putting 34 on the board and
- 1:26:11Speaker 12: beating a hot Jaguar team to run their record to 2-4.
- 1:26:15Speaker 12: A happy plane ride home awaits you.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the voice
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: of the Longhorns, Craig Way.
- 1:26:25Speaker 7: Follow Craig on social media at Horn Voice.
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: London was indeed calling for the Houston Texans who got
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: the win. A big, big win to get to 2-4
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: with that walk-off field goal from Kymie Fairbairn. Let's hear
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: from D'Amico Ryans, and he was talking about the importance
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: of closing out this game, how big it was for
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: the Texans.
- 1:26:54Speaker 5: This is a really important win, really big win for us,
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: and I can't say that without giving credit to Jacksonville.
- 1:27:02Speaker 7: What Coach Cohen has done, man, that's a really... That's a.
- 1:27:06Speaker 5: Really good team. They're a physical football team. They're one
- 1:27:10Speaker 5: of the best teams in the NFL. The way they
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: play the game, my hat goes off to those guys.
- 1:27:14Speaker 5: They play it the right way. They're really good coaches.
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: They're well coached. They play physical. They finish. Outstanding team
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: there in Jacksonville. So it's a big win because of
- 1:27:23Speaker 5: who we were able to get this against. It's always
- 1:27:25Speaker 5: great for us to close games out. We stumbled along
- 1:27:28Speaker 5: there earlier in the season. We didn't finish games, but
- 1:27:31Speaker 5: we found a way today to continue to play complementary football,
- 1:27:35Speaker 5: all three phases, really having an impact on this game.
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: Yeah, they were able to turn it around after the
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: Jaguars tied the game to get down in position to
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: win it.
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: This was a.
- 1:27:46Speaker 5: Heavyweight battle, and we knew that that's the type of
- 1:27:49Speaker 5: game it was going to be coming in. Really good offense.
- 1:27:52Speaker 5: The quarterback played extremely well. Parker Washington, they're running backs.
- 1:27:56Speaker 5: They run extremely hard. They play well. So, yeah, they
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: hit us with some big punches, but our offense was
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: able to answer with some punches of our own.
- 1:28:04Speaker 7: And that's true team football.
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: It does.
- 1:28:05Speaker 5: I told our guys and I. I probably hate saying this.
- 1:28:08Speaker 5: I say it doesn't matter how it looks. We just
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: want to leave London with the win. Can we make
- 1:28:13Speaker 5: it a little less stressful next time? But it's always
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: fun to get the win.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it. And back-to-back division wins.
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: What does that say about this team?
- 1:28:22Speaker 5: This game is always about complete team football.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: It's never about one side.
- 1:28:27Speaker 5: So what I love about us for the past two weeks,
- 1:28:29Speaker 5: we're coming together and we're truly playing as a team.
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: Like all three phases working together, that will never change.
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: That's our formula. That's our recipe for how we win
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: games is everybody pitching in, everybody doing their part and
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: when we do that we're really good team.
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: You know it's really weird how different the same record
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: can look to people two and four for the texans
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: right now looks a lot better than two and four
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: for the cowboys it's because the cowboys have dropped two
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: in a row the texans have to lose in the
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: first four games of one back-to-back games And Brian Schottenheimer
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: was asked in the aftermath of last night's 23-13 loss
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: to the Packers how frustrating it is to start poorly
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: after they had 10 days off after that loss to
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: Tampa Bay.
- 1:29:09Speaker 9: It's obviously very frustrating. But again, we can't repeat mistakes.
- 1:29:15Speaker 9: You know, we talked about we wanted to own the
- 1:29:16Speaker 9: line of scrimmage. I thought the defense did a really
- 1:29:18Speaker 9: good job stopping the run. I thought that was really,
- 1:29:21Speaker 9: really good. We got some pressure on the quarterback, which
- 1:29:23Speaker 9: was good. I don't think we did a, Very good
- 1:29:27Speaker 9: job blocking some movement stuff in the run game.
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: That hurt us.
- 1:29:31Speaker 9: But I want to look at the film. But those
- 1:29:33Speaker 9: were the areas that I really believe. I believe the
- 1:29:35Speaker 9: fight was right. I believe the effort was right. But
- 1:29:38Speaker 9: the execution wasn't clean enough.
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: It was a former Cowboys head coach who had far
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: more success when he was the coach of the New
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: York Giants. I'm speaking of Bill Parcells or... as Jerry
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: Jones used to call him, Bill Purcells, used to say,
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: you are what your record says you are.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: So the Cowboys are 2-4. Are they what the record
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: says they are?
- 1:29:59Speaker 9: Well, there's definitely time to pull out of it, but
- 1:30:01Speaker 9: we've got to fix the mistakes that we've talked about.
- 1:30:04Speaker 9: This is something that we've addressed and talked about. Again,
- 1:30:08Speaker 9: it starts with myself and the coaching staff to understand, again,
- 1:30:12Speaker 9: the ball matters more than anything. In the National Football League,
- 1:30:16Speaker 9: it's the ball. Second is the line of scrimmage. And
- 1:30:20Speaker 9: we haven't been very good in the last two games,
- 1:30:22Speaker 9: so that's what we're responsible and accountable for. And I
- 1:30:25Speaker 9: stand up here and accept that.
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: All right. So does that mean he's considering shaking things up?
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: Always.
- 1:30:32Speaker 9: I mean, I'm not opposed to shaking things up. That's
- 1:30:34Speaker 9: different than saying I'm not going to change. I'm never
- 1:30:36Speaker 9: going to change. I'm not going to change. Who I
- 1:30:39Speaker 9: am and how I look at the game doesn't mean
- 1:30:41Speaker 9: we're not willing to change things up and look at things.
- 1:30:43Speaker 9: There were some subtle changes tonight. There were some changes
- 1:30:46Speaker 9: from a personnel standpoint. There were some changes that have happened,
- 1:30:50Speaker 9: but obviously we didn't do enough good things to win.
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: And that's the name of the game.
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: Now we mentioned that despite these frustrations, they're only a
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: game and a half out of first. I mean, the
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: Giants are leading, if you will, the NFC East at three, two,
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: and one. So Dak Prescott was asked, does it matter
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: right now that the division is still kind of wide open?
- 1:31:08Speaker 10: No, it's about us fixing our issues, cleaning house and
- 1:31:12Speaker 10: just getting better.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: And from there, You said the division's open.
- 1:31:16Speaker 7: That'll take care of itself.
- 1:31:18Speaker 10: But we've got to win first and we've got to
- 1:31:20Speaker 10: get a win going.
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: And then from there we can try to build. But
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: it's about finding a way to win. All right.
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: So what gives him confidence that Brian Schottenheimer and the
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: coaching staff can get it going again?
- 1:31:29Speaker 10: Just the man he is, the way he approaches each
- 1:31:32Speaker 10: and every day with the same process. Adversity's hit us
- 1:31:35Speaker 10: and we've got to answer and we've got to look
- 1:31:37Speaker 10: it dead in the face.
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: And this will test.
- 1:31:40Speaker 10: Not just shot it, test myself, test this whole team.
- 1:31:43Speaker 10: And it's about, it'll test this brotherhood that we brag
- 1:31:46Speaker 10: about that. You know, we say we're going to hang
- 1:31:47Speaker 10: our hat on it. So it's going to test that
- 1:31:49Speaker 10: and we're going to see what we're made of.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: We're going to hear more from Longhorns head coach, Steve Sarkeesian,
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: coming up on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:31:57Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: Longhorns at home.
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: For game number two of the three-game homestand, their second
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: three-game homestand of the season.
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: On that all right and trying to turn things around
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: after the loss to florida to get ready for old
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: miss at the press conference heard earlier live today here
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: on 1300 zone longhorns head coach steve sarkisian was asked
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: a variety of questions uh including how challenging this season
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: has been with the things that have happened away from
- 1:32:27Speaker 2: the field and on the field as opposed to the
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: prior five years.
- 1:32:30Speaker 6: I think every year things come up and some are
- 1:32:34Speaker 6: more public than others um You know, I've got a
- 1:32:38Speaker 6: real organization, right? When you talk about 115 players, a
- 1:32:42Speaker 6: full staff of people, student workers, everybody that's involved. And
- 1:32:47Speaker 6: so you deal with things every year. Some of them
- 1:32:49Speaker 6: are more public than others, but you deal with stuff
- 1:32:51Speaker 6: every year and you manage them accordingly as they come.
- 1:32:56Speaker 6: once you handle those things, you move on to the next,
- 1:32:59Speaker 6: you know, and then you allow the people that work
- 1:33:01Speaker 6: for you to do their job. And so this year
- 1:33:03Speaker 6: has been no different. You know, again, things have come up,
- 1:33:07Speaker 6: you deal with them and you move forward. You know,
- 1:33:09Speaker 6: I tend not to live in the past. I tend
- 1:33:11Speaker 6: not to say, you know, keep going back to something.
- 1:33:14Speaker 6: It's like, we dealt with this, let's move forward. And
- 1:33:18Speaker 6: like Saturday's game came, we dealt with it yesterday, we
- 1:33:21Speaker 6: dealt with it this morning with the team, now we're
- 1:33:23Speaker 6: moving forward. I think the worst thing you can do
- 1:33:25Speaker 6: in life The worst thing you can do as a
- 1:33:27Speaker 6: football team is live looking in the rearview mirror. I mean,
- 1:33:30Speaker 6: the rearview mirror is this big. The windshield is this big.
- 1:33:33Speaker 6: Let's focus on what's in front of us and not
- 1:33:35Speaker 6: get so caught up in all the staring and what
- 1:33:37Speaker 6: happened behind us.
- 1:33:38Speaker 7: We got to forge forward.
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: All of that is true.
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: And looking directly in front of them quite often has
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: been an effective blitz from the opponent, be it Florida
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: on Saturday, Oklahoma the week before. So how do they
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: get out in front of that and prevent that from
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: being effective for the opponent?
- 1:33:54Speaker 6: You know, one thing, it always sounds good, blitz, blitz, blitz.
- 1:33:58Speaker 6: We haven't hurt the blitz enough and we haven't discouraged
- 1:34:02Speaker 6: the blitz enough. Because when you blitz, generally you should
- 1:34:06Speaker 6: be exploiting yourself behind the blitz, whether it's in the
- 1:34:10Speaker 6: run game or the pass game. To me, we haven't
- 1:34:12Speaker 6: done a good enough job of exploiting the blitz. I
- 1:34:16Speaker 6: do think there's a couple things schematically that we can
- 1:34:18Speaker 6: do better, which we've addressed as a staff. And I
- 1:34:23Speaker 6: think there's, some things that individuals can do better in,
- 1:34:26Speaker 6: in blocking those blitzes that have been addressed. And I
- 1:34:29Speaker 6: think that we can do those things better as well.
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: Next, he was asked if he's noticed a discernible difference
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: in the Pete Golding coached Ole Miss team and the
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin coached Ole Miss teams.
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:34:42Speaker 6: We didn't play Lane's teams. You know, I mean, I
- 1:34:45Speaker 6: watched them from afar and Lane's a heck of a coach. Um,
- 1:34:48Speaker 6: You know, I think I think obviously Pete's group and
- 1:34:51Speaker 6: what they were able to do in the playoffs when
- 1:34:54Speaker 6: he took over in a very unique situation to what
- 1:34:57Speaker 6: they've done to start this season. You know, Pete's teams
- 1:35:01Speaker 6: play hard. It's on the tape. They play hard in
- 1:35:03Speaker 6: all three phases. Clearly, they have a dynamic quarterback who
- 1:35:07Speaker 6: that didn't change from last year to this year. They
- 1:35:09Speaker 6: believe in running the ball. You know, Lacey's a heck
- 1:35:11Speaker 6: of a player running the ball. Um, so I don't,
- 1:35:14Speaker 6: I don't know the difference of it. I just know
- 1:35:16Speaker 6: what they look like now. Um, and, and they've got
- 1:35:19Speaker 6: a very good football team, but it's funny. It's ironic
- 1:35:22Speaker 6: because I think they have three top 25 wins. They
- 1:35:26Speaker 6: have one loss and that was to the same Florida
- 1:35:28Speaker 6: team we played last week at the swamp. And so
- 1:35:30Speaker 6: I just think it speaks to the parody of the
- 1:35:33Speaker 6: conference that we're in, um, that there's a lot of
- 1:35:37Speaker 6: good players and you gotta be ready week to week.
- 1:35:40Speaker 7: And, and I don't know what Pete thought about the
- 1:35:43Speaker 7: Florida game.
- 1:35:43Speaker 6: That's a good question for him of why that game
- 1:35:45Speaker 6: was so different for them as opposed to, you know,
- 1:35:48Speaker 6: the way they played last week versus Missouri, who's a
- 1:35:50Speaker 6: very good football team who had been hot coming into
- 1:35:53Speaker 6: that game. And so I think that just speaks to
- 1:35:55Speaker 6: the volume of you got to be ready in this week, right?
- 1:35:59Speaker 6: Any given Saturday, right? Anybody can show up and get you,
- 1:36:02Speaker 6: but he's done a heck of a job. And Pete
- 1:36:04Speaker 6: and I are very good friends. I got a ton
- 1:36:06Speaker 6: of respect for him. He's doing a great job.
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: A lot of conversation about Sark calling the plays and
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: whether it's a change play call or bringing somebody.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: Else to call plays.
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: He was asked to evaluate how things have gone with
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: him calling plays.
- 1:36:20Speaker 6: I had a crappy call in the rollout with Arch.
- 1:36:27Speaker 6: I didn't love that the official stood over the ball,
- 1:36:29Speaker 6: but that was a crummy call. I wish I had
- 1:36:31Speaker 6: called something better for him in that situation. That would
- 1:36:33Speaker 6: have been, if we would have won the game or
- 1:36:35Speaker 6: lost the game, I would have still come up here
- 1:36:36Speaker 6: and told you that was a crummy call.
- 1:36:37Speaker 7: That wasn't very good.
- 1:36:40Speaker 6: I think I've got to continue to remain creative, but
- 1:36:43Speaker 6: at the same time, not lose sight of who we
- 1:36:46Speaker 6: are fundamentally, right, and the beliefs that we have. And
- 1:36:49Speaker 6: so I can't not be creative because I'm trying to
- 1:36:56Speaker 6: make it easy. we got to do simple better as
- 1:36:58Speaker 6: an offense, but I still have to make things creative for,
- 1:37:01Speaker 6: for our opponents to have to defend things that make
- 1:37:03Speaker 6: it hard on them.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: Next, he was asked about checks and audibles and how
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: arch factors in all that to try to change up
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: things and be creative on offense.
- 1:37:12Speaker 6: We're not a huge, just put it all on the
- 1:37:15Speaker 6: quarterback to audible. Um, we do change protections and I
- 1:37:18Speaker 6: think he manages those things well. Um, When we have
- 1:37:23Speaker 6: run-run checks and things of that nature, run-pass checks, I
- 1:37:25Speaker 6: think those things are pretty defined.
- 1:37:27Speaker 7: He does a good job at that.
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: Sark was asked about something that he spoke of after
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: the game, and that was trying to make sure to
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: get guys to stick together, to stay together and not
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: give up.
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: So how does he keep the confidence up for this group?
- 1:37:44Speaker 6: I think, to your point, you show them exactly what
- 1:37:48Speaker 6: they're capable of. On the flip side, you show them
- 1:37:51Speaker 6: where we broke down in those critical moments. Because, you know,
- 1:37:57Speaker 6: and take nothing away from you guys. You all have
- 1:37:59Speaker 6: a job to do, and that's totally fair, and I
- 1:38:01Speaker 6: respect what you guys have to do. If they listen
- 1:38:03Speaker 6: to you, the season's over and the sky is falling,
- 1:38:06Speaker 6: and we might as well not play this Saturday.
- 1:38:09Speaker 7: We have to show them what they're capable of.
- 1:38:11Speaker 6: We have to show them where the breakdowns occurred and
- 1:38:14Speaker 6: how we're going to rectify those breakdowns so that when
- 1:38:16Speaker 6: they're in those moments again, that they have the confidence
- 1:38:18Speaker 6: and belief to go make those plays.
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: So what would he say then to the fan base
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: about this team's identity and the importance of continuing to
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: have good supportive home crowds at DKR?
- 1:38:28Speaker 6: I think our fans should know that we've got a
- 1:38:32Speaker 6: highly competitive football team, a team that takes a lot
- 1:38:35Speaker 6: of pride in putting on the burnt orange and white
- 1:38:37Speaker 6: every Saturday, and that we're going to play the game
- 1:38:40Speaker 6: hard and we're going to play the game the right way.
- 1:38:42Speaker 6: We may not be perfect, and we probably won't be perfect,
- 1:38:45Speaker 6: but we should be a team that they're very proud
- 1:38:47Speaker 6: of and the way we play the game. I think
- 1:38:50Speaker 6: crowd noise is critical Saturday night. And so I'm excited.
- 1:38:53Speaker 6: We had the 11 a.m. kick last Saturday and they
- 1:38:55Speaker 6: showed up. I'm expecting a rabid fan base Saturday night.
- 1:38:59Speaker 6: We're right in the middle of an SEC race. Every
- 1:39:02Speaker 6: SEC team's got a loss. I won't be surprised if
- 1:39:07Speaker 6: the SEC championship game has two teams that have multiple
- 1:39:10Speaker 6: losses playing each other.
- 1:39:11Speaker 7: And so there's a lot of football left.
- 1:39:13Speaker 6: This is a very big game against a top 10 opponent,
- 1:39:16Speaker 6: a very good football team. We're going to need their energy.
- 1:39:19Speaker 6: We're going to need their passion. We're going to need
- 1:39:20Speaker 6: their crowd noise Saturday night.
- 1:39:21Speaker 8: All right.
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: Then he was asked about the special teams play and
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: overall and the improvement of that and Ryan Niblett's touchdown.
- 1:39:29Speaker 6: Really happy for Ryan Niblett, you know, because he's such
- 1:39:32Speaker 6: a dynamic returner and we've been close on some things earlier.
- 1:39:35Speaker 6: We've had some struggles the previous two weeks, obviously, in
- 1:39:40Speaker 6: pump protection. I thought we protected really well. I thought
- 1:39:43Speaker 6: we covered really well. But our special teams, as I've
- 1:39:46Speaker 6: said here, have been a weapon of ours for years.
- 1:39:50Speaker 6: And I sat, I think, at the same press conference
- 1:39:53Speaker 6: last week and said, we'll get it right. We'll fix
- 1:39:55Speaker 6: it and we'll get there. And clearly we did. But
- 1:40:00Speaker 6: That's part of the solution, right? We got to be
- 1:40:03Speaker 6: part of the solution. And part of the solution is
- 1:40:05Speaker 6: all three phases playing complementary football together. And that was
- 1:40:11Speaker 6: one aspect of the game that I was frustrated about.
- 1:40:14Speaker 6: When we were down 10, we go down and score
- 1:40:17Speaker 6: on offense. We get a stop on defense.
- 1:40:19Speaker 7: We punt.
- 1:40:20Speaker 6: I think we get a 17-yard Ryan Niblett return. We
- 1:40:23Speaker 6: get great field position with 243 to go in the
- 1:40:26Speaker 6: game with a chance to go win the game, and
- 1:40:28Speaker 6: then we turn the ball over. And so it's tying
- 1:40:30Speaker 6: it all together, all three phases playing together, because when
- 1:40:33Speaker 6: we do that, we're a really good team.
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: And then one more from Sark in recapping the entirety
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: of his press conference. He was asked about Arch Manning's
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: demeanor given what happened in coming off the disappointment of
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: the game.
- 1:40:46Speaker 6: I had a good meeting with Arch yesterday, came out today.
- 1:40:49Speaker 6: He's got a chip on his shoulder, and I appreciated it.
- 1:40:53Speaker 7: I liked it.
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: Okay. Keep that in mind there.
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: Arch asked about his thoughts on facing the Ole Miss defense.
- 1:41:04Speaker 8: Well-coached team. They fly around on the ball. A bunch
- 1:41:06Speaker 8: of guys that can play different positions, and they're big
- 1:41:09Speaker 8: up front. So we got our hands full, and we're
- 1:41:11Speaker 8: ready for the challenge.
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:41:12Speaker 2: He was asked also to evaluate– an offensive line that
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: has had its struggles the last two weeks?
- 1:41:18Speaker 8: It's hard for me to tell. I'm not like an
- 1:41:20Speaker 8: O-line guy. I think they've been playing well, playing hard,
- 1:41:23Speaker 8: and that's all you can ask for.
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: So does he get to a point of being concerned
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: with things not going the way they want them to go?
- 1:41:29Speaker 8: The losing is never fun, and not playing well isn't fun.
- 1:41:31Speaker 8: But I think this team is built for adversity. I'm
- 1:41:34Speaker 8: built for adversity, and we're going to respond.
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: Remember in the second half of the season that they
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: really kicked it in the gear.
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: What changed offensively for them last year?
- 1:41:43Speaker 8: I think we just started letting it rip. And our
- 1:41:46Speaker 8: back's against the wall right now, and there's no place
- 1:41:48Speaker 8: I'd rather be.
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: All right, so can this offense, to use his quote,
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: let it rip? I think we're fully capable of that.
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: We got the players, we got the schemes, got the coaches,
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: and got the mindset now.
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: All right, he was also asked how well did he
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: know Trinidad Chambliss, the Ole Miss quarterback.
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: I got to meet him this summer. Really good guy.
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: Very nice.
- 1:42:08Speaker 8: He did the chapel at MPA, so he's a really
- 1:42:11Speaker 8: good guy, and he's a really good player.
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: You just heard Sark say that after his meeting with Arch,
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: he detected a chip on Arch's shoulder.
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: So what exactly does that mean following the meeting? It's
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: hard to not have a chip on my shoulder right now.
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: I'll tell you that. I think I play better with
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: it on.
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: Does he have some confidence and comfort in what they're
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: having to do in the two-minute offense like they did
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: last Saturday?
- 1:42:38Speaker 8: I'm really comfortable in those situations when we need to
- 1:42:39Speaker 8: have it. Obviously, the last two weeks, I haven't shown
- 1:42:42Speaker 8: that at the end of games, but I'm going to
- 1:42:44Speaker 8: show that moving forward.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: Okay. So what changed after they built the lead in
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: the first half?
- 1:42:48Speaker 8: We got to maintain that for four quarters, that hot
- 1:42:51Speaker 8: start and finish games.
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: All right. Is the team practicing better than playing? And
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: what causes that? I can't quite tell you.
- 1:43:02Speaker 8: I think we've had a good week of practice last week,
- 1:43:06Speaker 8: and we got to continue that and just have it
- 1:43:09Speaker 8: translate to the games because we're more than capable of
- 1:43:12Speaker 8: We let these two teams win.
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: They shouldn't have won. Okay.
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: There it is from Arch Manning as well. We'll be
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: back to wrap up today's edition of the program on
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: 13 Under the Zone.
