  SPEAKER_00: As an American, I've been exposed to the idea of the self-made man or woman practically my whole life.

  SPEAKER_00: After all, America was built on the idea of independence.

  SPEAKER_00: In fact, we have a whole holiday, July 4th, of course, devoted to that exact idea.

  SPEAKER_00: And for those of us who are creators, authors, and business owners, we practically worship the idea of calling our own shots and forging our own pathway in the world.

  SPEAKER_00: That concept has a limit, though, because as much as we might love our independence, in reality, we've never been, and we never truly can be, on our own.

  SPEAKER_00: Because everything that we have ultimately comes from other people.

  SPEAKER_00: Even if you live on a farm and you only consume what you grow, so let's take it to the extreme.

  SPEAKER_00: You live on a farm, you only consume what you grow, you feel like you're totally independent.

  SPEAKER_00: The reality is that you still have tools, electricity, vehicles, and many other things in your household and your farm that other people have made and that allow you to live that kind of life.

  SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, that's not even most of us.

  SPEAKER_00: For example, I live in a suburb outside of St.

  SPEAKER_00: Louis, and my daily needs for food and power and water and so many other things depend on the skills and engineering and the labor of other people.

  SPEAKER_00: And it's all those people that make our creative work possible.

  SPEAKER_00: Because of the innovation and hard work of so many people, we can write on computers, we can communicate with almost anybody in the world, we can upload our books for publication, and we can connect with readers and customers, and we can do so much more.

  SPEAKER_00: Honestly, it's truly an amazing time to be alive.

  SPEAKER_00: Now, most of the time here on the show, I talk about topics like writing, mindset, creativity, or attitude.

  SPEAKER_00: But once in a while, I'd like to challenge you to zoom out a little bit and take in the wonders of the modern world.

  SPEAKER_00: It's really pretty cool that we have the resources and the technology to build a life that we love on our own terms.

  SPEAKER_00: But it's mostly because of what other people have enabled us to do.
