Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 8/1: In Stadium Practice Gets Competitive, Full Day 9 Recap
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It was a fun Friday night at Jillette Stadium. Is
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Patriots got a little bit competitive with a scrimmage
- 0:05Speaker 1: inside Julette Stadium.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Let's break down for you.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome everybody to the Patriots training camp cast, and we
- 0:19Speaker 1: are fresh off of the field that Jillette Stadium where
- 0:21Speaker 1: the Patriots switched it up a little bit. Guys, usually
- 0:23Speaker 1: these in stadium practices aren't really competitive, but tonight Mike
- 0:26Speaker 1: Brabel instituted some points.
- 0:29Speaker 2: They had a draft.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Between the two teams, and it was actually pretty enjoyable.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Paul, wouldn't you say? I thought it was fun.
- 0:34Speaker 3: I don't think it was any more necessarily competitive than
- 0:39Speaker 3: the I did, and not because I thought that, you know,
- 0:41Speaker 3: the overall execution was all that great.
- 0:43Speaker 2: I know Evan's you know, sort of in a.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Dark place, but I thought the way that Vrabel sort
- 0:49Speaker 3: of explained, you know, there was going to be scoring
- 0:52Speaker 3: on defense for good defensive plays, turnovers, you know, run
- 0:55Speaker 3: stuffs and things of the of the like, you know,
- 0:58Speaker 3: third downstops, third conversions on offense. So the game never
- 1:02Speaker 3: really got out of hand either way because it wasn't
- 1:05Speaker 3: ever more than a one score game. Because you could
- 1:07Speaker 3: get infinite amount of points on a possession, So I
- 1:10Speaker 3: thought it was a fun set up. Now, I'll let
- 1:12Speaker 3: Evan tell you why you shouldn't be too happy about
- 1:14Speaker 3: anything that happens.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Look, I don't want to rain on the parade because
- 1:17Speaker 4: it was a fun night and it was a fun
- 1:19Speaker 4: set up, and I was glad that we got to
- 1:21Speaker 4: get one of these where felt at least live and competitive.
- 1:24Speaker 4: And I've seen so many of these in stadium practices
- 1:27Speaker 4: that are just walk throughs and glorified walkthroughs, and this
- 1:32Speaker 4: was much better than that. It was much more fun
- 1:34Speaker 4: than that. And there were standouts which we'll get to,
- 1:37Speaker 4: but let's just call it for what it was. Drake
- 1:39Speaker 4: May's team, the Blue team, turned the ball over three
- 1:42Speaker 4: times in the practice. Drake had two interceptions, Rmandra Stevenson fumbled.
- 1:46Speaker 4: These are just the types of practices you just don't
- 1:48Speaker 4: want to see repeat it. If it's a one off
- 1:50Speaker 4: and it was just a fun night, loose s gooofy
- 1:52Speaker 4: kind of practice, then that's totally fine. But if we
- 1:55Speaker 4: get out there against Washington on Wednesday and you have
- 1:57Speaker 4: a joint practice like this, then it's a little bit different.
- 2:00Speaker 4: But I'm not going to take this too seriously. I mean,
- 2:03Speaker 4: they were doing trick plays, they were doing some crazy stuff.
- 2:07Speaker 4: So I'm not going to sit here and take away
- 2:08Speaker 4: all these you know, doom and gloom type observations.
- 2:13Speaker 2: But I just don't want to see that repeated. Is
- 2:15Speaker 2: that fair?
- 2:15Speaker 3: Like, I don't want to totally fair and im and
- 2:17Speaker 3: I'm obviously, you know, having some fun with Evan that
- 2:21Speaker 3: the execution was not very crisp. I thought may had
- 2:25Speaker 3: some open targets that he missed on what I think
- 2:27Speaker 3: the second series that he had.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I thought he had Stevenson on.
- 2:29Speaker 3: A little kind of a broken play where I thought
- 2:31Speaker 3: he did a really nice job climbing the pocket to
- 2:33Speaker 3: avoid some potential pressure, and then Stevenson came free in
- 2:38Speaker 3: the end zone and he missed him by a good
- 2:39Speaker 3: five yards wide. And then I thought the next play
- 2:42Speaker 3: he had a chance for a big play down the
- 2:44Speaker 3: sideline to digs. May Or may not have had room
- 2:47Speaker 3: to squeeze one in, but the throw really didn't give
- 2:49Speaker 3: him a chance. So there were some ups and downs.
- 2:52Speaker 3: I understand where Evan's coming from. You want to see
- 2:54Speaker 3: a little bit better execution at this stage, but I
- 2:56Speaker 3: kind of take it, you know, for the fun that
- 2:59Speaker 3: I think it was intense, been full with the fans.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I was a fan tonight. I was I was fanboy,
- 3:03Speaker 2: and that was a large fan practice.
- 3:06Speaker 4: And if that's all we're going to chalk it up to,
- 3:08Speaker 4: then that's totally fine. But if I'm Mike Rabel personally,
- 3:11Speaker 4: I would probably say, hey, we don't practice that way,
- 3:15Speaker 4: you know, And we didn't practice that way the first
- 3:17Speaker 4: eight practice.
- 3:17Speaker 2: That's more than fair. That's all absolutely well. Put a
- 3:20Speaker 2: button on the bad stuff.
- 3:21Speaker 1: It was ended when Drake May threw an interception to
- 3:24Speaker 1: Alex Austin, who took to the turf to seal the
- 3:26Speaker 1: win for the White team. But let's talk about the
- 3:28Speaker 1: good stuff, because there was some fair stuff, and certainly
- 3:31Speaker 1: you mentioned some trick plays. We had a double pass
- 3:33Speaker 1: for a touchdown to Kyle Williams from Drake May, which
- 3:37Speaker 1: was a nice play. Just to list some of the
- 3:39Speaker 1: big plays, I thought Robert Splain nice day for him,
- 3:41Speaker 1: had like a diving, bobbling interception that he came down with.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Also recovered that fumble that Roubmander Stevenson had, Jalen Hawkins
- 3:49Speaker 1: coming up with two interceptions as well, So hey, we're
- 3:51Speaker 1: looking at the defensive.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Side, we're looking a little positive.
- 3:53Speaker 1: But I also just thought generally speaking, Keisehan Boody had
- 3:57Speaker 1: a couple of nice catches, real nice hands catched Booty. Well, yeah, uh,
- 4:01Speaker 1: Pop Douglas continues to kind of show up a little bit.
- 4:04Speaker 1: He drew penalty as well as how to catch. And
- 4:06Speaker 1: then the last one I was going to say is
- 4:08Speaker 1: Stefan Diggs. You continue to see what he's going to
- 4:10Speaker 1: bring to this Patriots offense. So, yes, there were some turnovers,
- 4:14Speaker 1: but there were also some some fun moments for the crowd,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and certainly I think the season ticket holders in the
- 4:18Speaker 1: Foxboro residents that we're here tonight had some fun.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:20Speaker 4: You mentioned two guys there, Jalen Hawkins, who we've seen
- 4:24Speaker 4: play a lot in that deep safety role, and one
- 4:26Speaker 4: of his picks was a double pass by Pop Douglas.
- 4:29Speaker 4: It was a throw by Pop, which is not exactly
- 4:32Speaker 4: what we're probably going to see in the regular season
- 4:34Speaker 4: very often, but he was still in the right place
- 4:37Speaker 4: and he made the play and made the play again
- 4:39Speaker 4: later on in the scrimmage as well. So looking for
- 4:42Speaker 4: that third safety, that free safety body type and skill set,
- 4:46Speaker 4: I would say he's the leader in the clubhouse right
- 4:49Speaker 4: now for that role has made the most impact or
- 4:52Speaker 4: the most splash plays. And then I thought this was
- 4:54Speaker 4: a really nice practice for you know pick notwithstanding for
- 4:59Speaker 4: Pop Douglas and for Kishan Boody, I thought both those
- 5:02Speaker 4: guys continue to really stand out. Booty ran that go
- 5:06Speaker 4: route down the sideline in the early part of the night,
- 5:08Speaker 4: just got right behind the defense or toasted everybody.
- 5:11Speaker 3: And I agree with Mike to bring up the crosser
- 5:14Speaker 3: later I think it was was that part of the
- 5:15Speaker 3: two minute drill. Yeah, I thought that was nice hand
- 5:18Speaker 3: hand catch two.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I agree.
- 5:20Speaker 3: I thought both of those guys were active again, and
- 5:23Speaker 3: you know, both kickers, I thought in the stadium, you know,
- 5:26Speaker 3: Andy Borogallis nailed a fifty three yarder late. They I
- 5:30Speaker 3: think were they combined to go three for three on
- 5:32Speaker 3: pats and three for three on field goals and two
- 5:34Speaker 3: field goals for borer Gallas.
- 5:36Speaker 2: So the kickers responded as well.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Really close competition between those two guys, Like I feel
- 5:41Speaker 4: like it's going to be tough for Parker Roo because
- 5:43Speaker 4: they drafted Borgoalis to really beat him out. But right now,
- 5:46Speaker 4: that is that's a coin flip between those two guys.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And I'll just add two. You know, sometimes inside the
- 5:51Speaker 3: stadium here can be a little tricky for kickers. And
- 5:55Speaker 3: you might say, well, you know, it's August, but it
- 5:57Speaker 3: was a pretty windy night and the wins can be
- 6:00Speaker 3: difficult to navigate inside. And I think just before they
- 6:04Speaker 3: started the scrimmage, Borgallis missed an extra point, you know,
- 6:09Speaker 3: in the open well, the old the old open end,
- 6:11Speaker 3: I still call it the open end. But again maybe
- 6:14Speaker 3: he made an adjustment after that because he was he
- 6:16Speaker 3: was nails forty fifty three yart ter and he made
- 6:20Speaker 3: an extra point too. So a good job by the
- 6:22Speaker 3: kickers and it's their first real foray inside the stadium.
- 6:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I just say one more thing about Pop. I
- 6:28Speaker 4: thought during the two minute he caught a little option
- 6:30Speaker 4: route underneath the defense to keep the drive going, and
- 6:33Speaker 4: the defense ran like a simulated pressure where the end
- 6:36Speaker 4: dropped out into coverage into his zone drop and in
- 6:39Speaker 4: that you can tell it just Josh McDaniel's type stuff,
- 6:42Speaker 4: where if the end dropped there, like he got to
- 6:44Speaker 4: break out towards the sideline away from the defender in
- 6:47Speaker 4: the in the drop and Pop just did it perfectly
- 6:50Speaker 4: like he saw it quickly, you know, broke out a
- 6:52Speaker 4: little bit, made himself available to the quarterback. Ball was
- 6:55Speaker 4: out and on umn and that was like Edelman Welker
- 6:58Speaker 4: vibes right, Like that's exactly that type of route and
- 7:01Speaker 4: you've seen it had a nice a million times. And
- 7:03Speaker 4: we talked about this on on PU just the cerebral
- 7:06Speaker 4: ness and like taking that next step of thinking the game,
- 7:10Speaker 4: not just being able to physically play it, but also
- 7:12Speaker 4: being able to think it. I just keep seeing examples
- 7:14Speaker 4: of that from Pop that he's see He's seeing things
- 7:18Speaker 4: now that he wasn't necessarily seeing in the first couple
- 7:21Speaker 4: of years.
- 7:21Speaker 2: So a couple of housekeeping things.
- 7:22Speaker 1: There were a number of players who didn't participate, key
- 7:25Speaker 1: On White being a notable one who's generally been healthy.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Maybe just a day off for him.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Perhaps Mac Hollins who just came back yesterday, he wasn't
- 7:32Speaker 1: out there as well.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I think there were ten or eleven guys that weren't
- 7:35Speaker 3: taking part, and all of them have missed practice at
- 7:37Speaker 3: some point, except for key On White. So that's something
- 7:40Speaker 3: we'll have to monitor now that we're not going to
- 7:43Speaker 3: have any access over the weekend. I'm not sure if
- 7:44Speaker 3: the players are off for the whole weekend, but the
- 7:46Speaker 3: next time we'll get a chance to see it will
- 7:48Speaker 3: be Monday.
- 7:49Speaker 2: We'll see if Keon's out there.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And we also had a couple of players left the game,
- 7:52Speaker 1: which is of course the danger you take when you
- 7:54Speaker 1: have this kind of situation. With Pads Kendrick Bourne, it
- 7:57Speaker 1: seemed like you got tackled to the ground. Yeah, he
- 7:59Speaker 1: went off, and Hayden Wallace as well, which is want
- 8:01Speaker 1: to monitor. You know, he's not in the front line
- 8:03Speaker 1: of the starters right now, Paul, but they've been getting
- 8:05Speaker 1: dinged a little bit with that offensive line dep and
- 8:07Speaker 1: right now he's their top there.
- 8:08Speaker 2: There has been some attrition there.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I would still say Cole Strange is the top left
- 8:13Speaker 3: guard back up, but he's now working at center with
- 8:16Speaker 3: the second group. So yeah, I absolutely would say that
- 8:19Speaker 3: that is a situation to monitor because we saw this
- 8:23Speaker 3: last year. It was the injuries seem to be concentrated
- 8:27Speaker 3: in specific areas, and right now the offensive line is
- 8:30Speaker 3: one of those areas. You know, Vederian Lowe is yet
- 8:32Speaker 3: to practice, and you know you're missing Garrett Bradberry, Morgan
- 8:36Speaker 3: Moses on a pitch count. Now you're dealing with city,
- 8:38Speaker 3: so it hasn't been out there, so your your depth
- 8:41Speaker 3: is getting challenged a little bit.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Hopefully it's nothing too serious.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Yeah, think I just real quick, Evan, just to highlight.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I think Alex Austin is a guy that you know,
- 8:48Speaker 1: Paul's camp had a good camp. It's just a nice
- 8:51Speaker 1: way to end the practice for him. And really liked
- 8:53Speaker 1: that he had the mind to get down. I mean
- 8:56Speaker 1: that's a game type situation where he's thinking about end
- 8:58Speaker 1: of game and how do I see this off and
- 9:01Speaker 1: give the ball back to the offense without giving the
- 9:03Speaker 1: other team another chance. So I just thought it was
- 9:04Speaker 1: a really nice end of the practice for him, a
- 9:06Speaker 1: player who at another position where there have been some
- 9:09Speaker 1: injuries and they needed him to step up.
- 9:10Speaker 4: A little bit, and he feels a little bit a
- 9:12Speaker 4: step above in that depth chart order, just in terms
- 9:16Speaker 4: of like the Marcellus dials, and I know DJ James
- 9:18Speaker 4: is the name that people are starting to hear more
- 9:20Speaker 4: of as like a training camp riser. I still feel
- 9:23Speaker 4: like Alex Austin is like maybe a tier above those guys,
- 9:26Speaker 4: And even early on in camp, Christian Gonzalez was out
- 9:29Speaker 4: there for the first handful of practices, but Carlton Davis
- 9:33Speaker 4: wasn't and it was Alex Austin who was the top
- 9:35Speaker 4: backup to Carlton Davis, not any of those other guys
- 9:38Speaker 4: that I mentioned, So I feel like Austin's pretty secure now.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Is that third boundary corner? You usually need three to
- 9:44Speaker 4: carry you throughout the season, even injuries or just game
- 9:48Speaker 4: plan like sometimes there might be a matchup where Gonzo
- 9:51Speaker 4: is better suited in the slot or Carlton Davis is
- 9:54Speaker 4: covering a tight end like Brock Bauers, so you need
- 9:56Speaker 4: another corner to play on the outside. And I feel
- 9:59Speaker 4: like Alex Ostin going to be that guy, and he's
- 10:02Speaker 4: kind of earned it, or even just playing over the
- 10:04Speaker 4: last couple of years, you know, in games, real games,
- 10:07Speaker 4: not just in practice.
- 10:08Speaker 1: All right, Well, fun way to end off the week,
- 10:10Speaker 1: and of course a big week coming up next week
- 10:12Speaker 1: with both a joint practice and a preseason game against
- 10:15Speaker 1: the Commander, So we shift gears a little bit from
- 10:17Speaker 1: training camp into the preseason. So two days off, we'll
- 10:20Speaker 1: be back Monday to break it down for you.
- 10:24Speaker 5: Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
