- 0:01Speaker 1: When you don't require of God that you get to
- 0:04Speaker 1: see the fruit of every seed you've ever sown, when
- 0:07Speaker 1: you let go of that, that is when you will
- 0:09Speaker 1: do the greatest thing you could do in your life.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Because most people, they're like, well, God, I'll only do
- 0:14Speaker 1: this as long as you're going to show me the fruit.
- 0:15Speaker 1: You're limited. You're not willing to give all of it.
- 0:19Speaker 2: That's impossible. Let me tell you what I believe.
- 0:21Speaker 1: That your weakness is not your technique.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yes!
- 0:25Speaker 1: Yes! Don't think you are. Know you are.
- 0:31Speaker 3: The Impossible Life Podcast.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I mean, you're sitting on a winning lottery ticket. An
- 0:35Speaker 1: idea that is fully formed, fully understood, that sticks. This
- 0:42Speaker 1: is The Impossible Life Podcast because Nick and I are
- 0:45Speaker 1: attempting to live impossible lives. What we know is that
- 0:49Speaker 1: nothing is impossible. So instead of using impossible as an
- 0:53Speaker 1: excuse to not try, we'll use the pursuit of impossible
- 0:57Speaker 1: as an accelerant for greatness. If something's never been done before,
- 1:01Speaker 1: that just means it's unexplored. If they tell you it's
- 1:05Speaker 1: too hard, it's just waiting to be simplified. Impossible is
- 1:10Speaker 1: a default label used by uncourageous people, unwilling to take
- 1:14Speaker 1: a risk. The real truth is this. The solution to
- 1:18Speaker 1: any impossible task starts with this question. If I had to,
- 1:23Speaker 1: what would it take?
- 1:29Speaker 2: Welcome to another episode of the Impossible Life Podcast. I'm
- 1:32Speaker 2: your host, Nick Surface, and I'm looking across at a
- 1:34Speaker 2: man who recently had a third missile silo installed into
- 1:37Speaker 2: the iron dome that is his chest. That's right, friends,
- 1:40Speaker 2: the FOMO Navy SEAL. Garrett Unklebach, a man who takes
- 1:46Speaker 2: guarding his heart seriously.
- 1:49Speaker 1: As we should all.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Where do you go to get such a installation? I
- 1:53Speaker 2: do not know. But this is very much you. You
- 1:56Speaker 2: have an iron freaking dome protecting your heart so that
- 2:00Speaker 2: nothing gets in there that shouldn't.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Declined.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:03Speaker 2: And that's how everything is.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Entry not granted.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Always.
- 2:06Speaker 2: And then eventually.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Access denied. Yeah. Okay, bro. I get it.
- 2:09Speaker 2: This feels like what our conversations are like. No. No.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Denied. Get out of here.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Anyways. All right.
- 2:15Speaker 2: So, G, today, man. You know, our first episode that
- 2:17Speaker 2: we ever, which is the most listened to episode and
- 2:20Speaker 2: coming out of going to Rhode Island to speak at
- 2:23Speaker 2: the Iron Sharpens Iron Men's Conference, I got to speak to.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Sounds so awesome. I love hearing those stories.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I got to talk to so many of our
- 2:30Speaker 2: listeners that came out. So, man, I so appreciated everybody
- 2:33Speaker 2: who turned up and I'm so grateful that I got
- 2:35Speaker 2: to speak with everybody. But like, I love hearing how
- 2:38Speaker 2: many people. are like, some guys were like, man, I'm
- 2:40Speaker 2: on my third time through. I got to listen.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Third time, that's so awesome.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I got to meet all-time great listener Morgan Wotherspoon and
- 2:47Speaker 2: his son who listened to 20,000 Minutes last year and
- 2:50Speaker 2: took number one place. He might be doing it again
- 2:52Speaker 2: this year because we'll be coming up soon. But it
- 2:55Speaker 2: was really, it was just so cool. I love hearing
- 2:56Speaker 2: those people that go back because some of them were like, oh,
- 2:58Speaker 2: I just started to go back. But it's our number
- 3:00Speaker 2: one episode. And I remember I titled it just very
- 3:03Speaker 2: randomly off the top of my head and it was
- 3:04Speaker 2: definitely a little God wink. There's more life. And so
- 3:07Speaker 2: I almost feel like this would be caveat way, way
- 3:11Speaker 2: further down the path of like, how much life do
- 3:13Speaker 2: you really want? Because it is the question that I
- 3:17Speaker 2: think God is constantly asking of us. And I don't
- 3:21Speaker 2: know that people always get that, because I think sometimes
- 3:24Speaker 2: people have this understanding of grace that it's like, well,
- 3:26Speaker 2: because Jesus paid the price, man, he just does it all.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And we're just kind of like, okay, Lord, come in
- 3:31Speaker 2: and just do everything. And there's this tension between understanding
- 3:34Speaker 2: your response to grace and And what grace is, is
- 3:36Speaker 2: that the power of God to do what only God
- 3:38Speaker 2: can do, right? Like we have no power to give
- 3:40Speaker 2: ourselves salvation. We have no power to give ourselves forgiveness.
- 3:44Speaker 2: That is 100% the grace of God. But there's other
- 3:47Speaker 2: areas where he's waiting for us to yield our will,
- 3:49Speaker 2: to allow him to do the work that he wants
- 3:51Speaker 2: to do, because God's not going to force himself on us,
- 3:54Speaker 2: which is like, oh, man.
- 3:56Speaker 1: The greatest leadership is an invitation.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Now, fortunately, Gary, and I say this, man, and I, like,
- 4:01Speaker 2: I know that people hear Navy SEALs and they think
- 4:04Speaker 2: it's cool. At least I hope they do. But sometimes
- 4:07Speaker 2: it becomes unrelatable. But I think if you– you guys
- 4:11Speaker 2: aren't superhuman. But you guys push all to a level
- 4:15Speaker 2: that I think is a question that most people don't ask.
- 4:18Speaker 2: And I love that we have that as an example.
- 4:19Speaker 1: You call normal superhuman when your normal is subhuman. Right.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Okay. Thank you for saying what I was going to
- 4:26Speaker 2: say in many paragraphs in one, in two sentences.
- 4:29Speaker 1: You're more capable than you think you are.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:31Speaker 1: And you'll, you'll hear lots of great people talk about it,
- 4:34Speaker 1: talk about it in that context, you know, like you
- 4:36Speaker 1: can just, but essentially the thought is you can do
- 4:38Speaker 1: way more than you think you can.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Now there, is there a point where you start to like,
- 4:42Speaker 2: cause I've seen you send me the videos from buds
- 4:44Speaker 2: where they're like, see, you thought you like you, you
- 4:46Speaker 2: have more in the tank, like where they're teaching you
- 4:48Speaker 2: guys that you, that whatever your limit was, you can
- 4:51Speaker 2: actually go way further. Is there a point where that
- 4:53Speaker 2: clicks or I mean like for guys or.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Uh, well, I mean, that is the whole point of
- 4:57Speaker 1: the hell week exercise is to force people to go
- 5:00Speaker 1: through that. Cause you see, if you ever go do
- 5:02Speaker 1: anything difficult, right? Like kind of starts people with a marathon.
- 5:04Speaker 1: They're like, Oh, I didn't think I could do it.
- 5:06Speaker 1: It's like, if you had to, you can do way
- 5:08Speaker 1: more than a marathon. Right. Look at what happened. Like
- 5:11Speaker 1: go back to world war two and see what they
- 5:12Speaker 1: did to people and what people were capable of when
- 5:15Speaker 1: they were forced to do things.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Right.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Right. A marathon is, you know, a lunch break for
- 5:20Speaker 1: what you see people do in world war two who
- 5:22Speaker 1: were forced to do certain things. So the human body
- 5:24Speaker 1: is capable of way more than is the point of
- 5:26Speaker 1: the whole week exercise, which is to both show that
- 5:29Speaker 1: to you, but also to test you, will you willingly
- 5:32Speaker 1: go to this place?
- 5:33Speaker 2: Right. And I think a lot of people, what we
- 5:35Speaker 2: would call is like all in, is a very low effort.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But you don't get exposed.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Well, people say all the time, like, man, I tried everything.
- 5:42Speaker 1: It's like, dude, you've tried three things. Right.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, but you've not tried everything. But you guys get
- 5:46Speaker 2: it exposed. And especially with your teamwork, like it's easy
- 5:49Speaker 2: to see, right? I mean, you have so many examples
- 5:51Speaker 2: with your boat crew and different things where it's like, Yeah.
- 5:53Speaker 1: This, you know, uh, remember the story of when I
- 5:57Speaker 1: was going through hell week, there's an evolution called a
- 6:01Speaker 1: base tour, um, which is you're going to do like
- 6:05Speaker 1: 30 or 40 miles, uh, at night of just running
- 6:08Speaker 1: around base. Like they run you for like six out,
- 6:10Speaker 1: basically like all through either Monday night or Tuesday night. There's, um,
- 6:15Speaker 1: there's chaos to hell week, but there's also a rhythm.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And the instructors, you know, they just got their playbook of, okay,
- 6:21Speaker 1: let's go, let's run this play.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And they have a set of evolutions that they want
- 6:24Speaker 1: to run it. One of those, uh, evolutions is based on,
- 6:27Speaker 1: you're going to run 30 or 40 miles, just doing
- 6:29Speaker 1: sprints around the base all through the night.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Jeez.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And we were doing my, when my, with a boat
- 6:34Speaker 1: on your head. Yeah. With a boat on your head.
- 6:36Speaker 1: It's a six man. So the, That Zodiac, if you've
- 6:38Speaker 1: got like all of the, if you've got all the
- 6:41Speaker 1: water and sand out of it, you got it aired up, right.
- 6:44Speaker 1: You know, it's six men carrying the equivalent of it's,
- 6:48Speaker 1: it's about 170, 180 pounds on your head between six guys.
- 6:52Speaker 1: So each person's running around with 30 or 40 pounds.
- 6:54Speaker 2: On their head.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I've never seen anybody at the gym with a 35
- 6:57Speaker 2: plate on their head, just running sprints, but you know,
- 6:59Speaker 2: maybe I'll be the guy.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It doesn't, it doesn't feel great. Um, so we were
- 7:03Speaker 1: in base tour and This is one of the common
- 7:07Speaker 1: phrases in SEAL training and in BUDS is, pays to
- 7:11Speaker 1: be a winner, don't be last. People who win, like
- 7:15Speaker 1: we would do a bunch of sprints. The street wasn't
- 7:18Speaker 1: wide enough for all the boat crews to race at once,
- 7:20Speaker 1: but they would do two or three heats depending on
- 7:22Speaker 1: what street we're on, and we're going to run down
- 7:24Speaker 1: the street. Pays to be a winner, don't be last.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And the guys who win, it's like you get to
- 7:27Speaker 1: sit out of heat. It's great. You get to rest
- 7:29Speaker 1: for a minute. The guys who don't, you go again.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And the guys who are in last get extra punishments.
- 7:34Speaker 1: And my boat crew kept coming in last because we
- 7:37Speaker 1: had a guy in our boat crew who was putting
- 7:39Speaker 1: the brakes on. And if you ever watch, if you
- 7:41Speaker 1: watch the discovery channel documentary, you watch any of the
- 7:43Speaker 1: stuff on this. If you look at a boat crew
- 7:45Speaker 1: from the side, it's very easy to tell the guys
- 7:47Speaker 1: who are like trying to push the boat forward. It's
- 7:49Speaker 1: the same, just watch somebody run. You can tell who's
- 7:52Speaker 1: like really getting after it. And you can tell who's
- 7:53Speaker 1: like tired and dogging it just by the posture of
- 7:56Speaker 1: your body. If you're leaning forward, you're trying to go faster. Right.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And if you're vertical or, you know, negative vertical, leaning
- 8:02Speaker 1: back a little bit, then you are putting the brakes on. Yeah.
- 8:05Speaker 1: And there was a guy in front of me who
- 8:07Speaker 1: was putting the brakes on and we're trying, like, we
- 8:09Speaker 1: don't want to keep coming in last. We keep getting
- 8:11Speaker 1: pain for it. And this guy has just gone to the,
- 8:14Speaker 1: you know, survival, feeling sorry for himself, negative place. And
- 8:18Speaker 1: we're all pushing against him, like putting the brakes on. Yeah.
- 8:22Speaker 1: And I read, like, I, I'm trying to lean forward.
- 8:26Speaker 1: And so, and he's coming backwards. And so he's also
- 8:28Speaker 1: like getting into my space to be able to run
- 8:31Speaker 1: And I picked my foot up because this is how
- 8:32Speaker 1: slow we're going. I picked my foot up, put it
- 8:34Speaker 1: on his back. And it's not like I struck kick him,
- 8:36Speaker 1: but like I put my foot on his back and
- 8:37Speaker 1: like pushed him forward like a kick, like a front kick.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And he just face planted and we took off sprinting. Right. Right.
- 8:44Speaker 1: So five men ran faster than six dudes.
- 8:47Speaker 2: And see, I don't think if you, I think for
- 8:50Speaker 2: a lot of people, if you said you're given five,
- 8:51Speaker 2: six of everything you got to back, man, that's pretty good.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:54Speaker 2: And it's, but this, this, this dichotomy that you have to,
- 8:58Speaker 2: you don't really actually know what the full returns are.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Unless you're all in on it.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Well, it's also the Patrick Lencioni quote that I love
- 9:05Speaker 1: and teach on. You can dominate in any industry against
- 9:09Speaker 1: any competition at any time if, and it's a big if,
- 9:13Speaker 1: if you can get everyone rowing in the same direction.
- 9:16Speaker 1: If everyone's giving all that they have, you'll win. Not
- 9:18Speaker 1: only will you win, you'll dominate. But that's where most people,
- 9:21Speaker 1: they're not able to achieve in life. They're not able
- 9:23Speaker 1: to win their race or finish their race. Because they
- 9:27Speaker 1: give a lot and they call it all.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah, man, that's so good.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I tried really hard. It's one of the, this is
- 9:32Speaker 1: one of the like painful, brutal realities of life. Make
- 9:36Speaker 1: sure you help your kids learn this before life teaches
- 9:39Speaker 1: it to them. Right. Learning this at 40 is hard. Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Effort doesn't equal outcome. Yeah.
- 9:44Speaker 2: And really capture that because that is the thing. So
- 9:46Speaker 2: many times you'll ask your kids to do something. They'll
- 9:48Speaker 2: be like, well, I tried. And to your point, you've
- 9:51Speaker 2: got to teach them that like I tried. It doesn't
- 9:54Speaker 2: change the actual results. Oh, you know, man, I really
- 9:57Speaker 2: tried to provide food for you guys today, but it
- 9:59Speaker 2: just didn't work out. Hopefully you guys can accept my effort.
- 10:03Speaker 2: You would never think that's okay, but all the time
- 10:06Speaker 2: we offer that in other areas because we've just stopped
- 10:10Speaker 2: thinking about it. And so like today is really about
- 10:13Speaker 2: what it is to walk this path of greatness and
- 10:15Speaker 2: to just get all of it, man, which is, What
- 10:17Speaker 2: we're running for is to absolutely empty us out. It
- 10:20Speaker 2: gets me fired up.
- 10:20Speaker 1: So what is greatness?
- 10:22Speaker 2: I'm glad you asked, Gene.
- 10:24Speaker 1: What is greatness? This is something I love to talk about.
- 10:29Speaker 1: If you listen to this podcast, it's because you want
- 10:31Speaker 1: greatness with your life. And we've talked about this before,
- 10:33Speaker 1: but I just want to refresh on it. One of
- 10:35Speaker 1: the things I've learned as a speaker, teacher... podcaster, and
- 10:41Speaker 1: we're bringing this into the podcast today, is it's okay
- 10:43Speaker 1: to talk about the same thing sometimes? Yes. I remember
- 10:45Speaker 1: when I first started speaking, I was like, oh, I
- 10:47Speaker 1: can't say that. I've already said that before. One and done.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Can never say that again because I already said it.
- 10:51Speaker 1: And it's actually the opposite. It is true. And like
- 10:54Speaker 1: one of my mentors said to me, men only have
- 10:56Speaker 1: to be told once, they have to be reminded many times.
- 10:58Speaker 1: This is a great reminder on what greatness is. And
- 11:00Speaker 1: this comes from Genesis. It's the creation mandate where God said,
- 11:03Speaker 1: be fruitful and multiply, right? That's what Like that is
- 11:07Speaker 1: the original mandate. It's what God put us on the
- 11:09Speaker 1: earth to do, be fruitful and multiply. The Hebrew word
- 11:13Speaker 1: for multiply is like English multiply, Hebrew rabah, right? And
- 11:18Speaker 1: rabah is all of it. It's multiplication. It's to become great.
- 11:23Speaker 1: It's the fullness or completion of what something could be, right?
- 11:26Speaker 1: So in the beginning, think of it, it's just a
- 11:28Speaker 1: few people on the earth. He's like, hey, fill it up.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Do all of it, right? And for all of us,
- 11:33Speaker 1: that is the creation mandate for your life. That doesn't
- 11:35Speaker 1: mean You should have children, but it doesn't mean like
- 11:37Speaker 1: have as many kids as possible and fill the earth. Well,
- 11:40Speaker 1: it's more than that. It's what is all of it
- 11:42Speaker 1: for your life, right? And so that's where I try
- 11:45Speaker 1: to always help everyone understand God has a purpose for you.
- 11:49Speaker 1: God created you for a reason. And there is a rabah.
- 11:52Speaker 1: There is a greatness. There is an all of it
- 11:54Speaker 1: for you. And that's what you should want. You should
- 11:56Speaker 1: want everything that God created you to be. You should
- 11:59Speaker 1: want a fulfillment of your purpose. I want to do
- 12:02Speaker 1: all of it. I don't want to do most of it.
- 12:04Speaker 1: I don't want to try. I want to do exact, like,
- 12:06Speaker 1: think about it. When God made you, he made you
- 12:09Speaker 1: to be able to do a certain set of things
- 12:12Speaker 1: to fulfill a certain purpose. Do you want to just
- 12:14Speaker 1: try at that? Do you want to do most of that?
- 12:16Speaker 1: Or do you want to do everything God created you
- 12:18Speaker 1: to do? Yeah.
- 12:19Speaker 2: You know, and G, I'm reminded of the parable of
- 12:20Speaker 2: the soils and the first soil, the seed never goes
- 12:25Speaker 2: in because it says the birds of the air pluck
- 12:27Speaker 2: it out. And that was the devil stealing it. Here's
- 12:29Speaker 2: how this, what we're saying is going to be stolen
- 12:31Speaker 2: from you. Well, yeah, that's cool for you, Garrett, but
- 12:34Speaker 2: I don't have Like, I don't have this. Like, you
- 12:37Speaker 2: asked this question. God has a great plan and purpose,
- 12:40Speaker 2: but does he have a great plan and purpose for
- 12:41Speaker 2: your life?
- 12:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 12:43Speaker 2: If you're out there right now and you're going, yeah, like,
- 12:45Speaker 2: I don't know, because, well, you know, Garrett's a Navy SEAL,
- 12:48Speaker 2: or however you perceive our voices or other people, what
- 12:52Speaker 2: will steal it is for you to believe that you
- 12:53Speaker 2: have to be a certain way in order for this
- 12:55Speaker 2: to be true. When God gave that creation mandate, it
- 12:57Speaker 2: was for every single person who is his creation. We're
- 13:02Speaker 2: the brothers of Christ. This is something that has been
- 13:04Speaker 2: so revelatory to me recently. And if we're called to
- 13:08Speaker 2: be his sons, imagine if you met. Here's a great story.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan's son, unfortunately, I read this, I
- 13:16Speaker 2: think it's in the last year or two, got arrested
- 13:18Speaker 2: in his Lamborghini doing cocaine. And just really think about it.
- 13:22Speaker 1: He got the negative parts of his dad and none
- 13:24Speaker 1: of the.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Didn't get the dog.
- 13:26Speaker 2: You're Michael Jordan's son? Dude, why aren't you the next
- 13:29Speaker 2: great thing? And I'm using this as a very, very
- 13:32Speaker 2: dumbed down version for us to understand that, man, that's
- 13:34Speaker 2: really disappointing. You are the son of God. the literally
- 13:39Speaker 2: creator of the universe. Do you not think that he
- 13:41Speaker 2: wants the absolute best for you? So don't let this
- 13:43Speaker 2: word that we're saying be stolen from you before we
- 13:46Speaker 2: even started. God does have a great plan and purpose
- 13:48Speaker 2: of your life. To Garrett's point, you need to remind
- 13:50Speaker 2: yourself of that every single day because it'll always be
- 13:53Speaker 2: something in there telling you, well, you're not like this guy. Well,
- 13:55Speaker 2: you don't have what this guy does. Well, you know,
- 13:57Speaker 2: this is the reason why you can't. And you've got
- 13:58Speaker 2: to stand up that and say, no, you're wrong.
- 14:00Speaker 1: God has a great plan for your life.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Yes.
- 14:02Speaker 1: We need to hear it as much as possible. That's
- 14:04Speaker 1: so It's, you know, greatness is all of it. You've
- 14:07Speaker 1: got to decide that you want all of it. And
- 14:09Speaker 1: this is the test of our lives, and it's what
- 14:12Speaker 1: we're talking about today. I want to help you understand
- 14:14Speaker 1: how much of it do you want, and I want
- 14:16Speaker 1: to show you the only path to greatness is that
- 14:19Speaker 1: you would give everything. You see this in so many
- 14:22Speaker 1: men's lives throughout the Bible, right? Like, this is really
- 14:27Speaker 1: the altar test. This is the beginning of it, what
- 14:29Speaker 1: God did with Abraham, his first, right? with Abraham, gives
- 14:32Speaker 1: him Isaac, gives him the promise, but then says, will
- 14:35Speaker 1: you put it on the altar? You must be willing
- 14:37Speaker 1: to sacrifice it. You must be willing to give all
- 14:39Speaker 1: of it. He didn't say... Abraham didn't come up to
- 14:42Speaker 1: the altar and said, God, I'll give you all my money,
- 14:44Speaker 1: but I'm not giving you my son. He didn't say, God,
- 14:46Speaker 1: I'll give you all my land. I'll give you the
- 14:48Speaker 1: rest of my family, but not my son. He was
- 14:50Speaker 1: willing to give the thing that was most precious to him.
- 14:53Speaker 1: And again, this is this understanding that effort doesn't equal outcome.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Just because you tried, just because you did a lot,
- 14:58Speaker 1: that's not all of it. What I'm doing is I'm
- 15:00Speaker 1: challenging you as you're listening to this to understand that
- 15:03Speaker 1: you could give more. If there's something that you've heard,
- 15:06Speaker 1: if you've been listening to this show for a long time,
- 15:08Speaker 1: what you've been hearing me say in different words for
- 15:11Speaker 1: hundreds of episodes is there's more in you than you think.
- 15:15Speaker 1: And there's a mathematical principle that goes along with this.
- 15:18Speaker 1: It's the law of diminishing returns. If you understand finance,
- 15:23Speaker 1: if you understand math, if you understand dilution, you realize...
- 15:27Speaker 1: Let me just break it down into an example for you.
- 15:30Speaker 1: So we have a gallon of milk. If I put
- 15:32Speaker 1: a gallon of milk in a bowl and I pour
- 15:35Speaker 1: a gallon of water into that, first it's 100% milk.
- 15:39Speaker 1: And use this as an understanding of your heart or
- 15:42Speaker 1: as an understanding of all of a thing.
- 15:44Speaker 2: This is you being transformed is what it is.
- 15:46Speaker 1: So right now you're 100% milk, and we want to
- 15:48Speaker 1: turn you into 100% water. Let's go. We had a
- 15:51Speaker 1: gallon of milk. I pour a gallon of water in.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Now you're 50% water.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Woo-hoo. Winning. Yeah. Right.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Doing great. Okay. And then I pour in another gallon
- 16:01Speaker 1: of milk.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:01Speaker 1: So we're at three gallons total. Right. And it's, thank you.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Another gallon of water. So I've poured in two gallons
- 16:05Speaker 1: of water and we've got one gallon of milk. So
- 16:08Speaker 1: you're 33% milk now, right? 66% water. Still making big progress. Right.
- 16:14Speaker 1: That's great. Then we pour in another gallon and you're
- 16:18Speaker 1: at 25% milk. We pour in another six gallons and
- 16:22Speaker 1: now we're at 10 gallons total and you're at 10% milk.
- 16:25Speaker 1: So what you've got to see is like, man, I
- 16:28Speaker 1: did one gallon of water. Just look at this as
- 16:30Speaker 1: effort right in your life. And I made 50% change.
- 16:33Speaker 1: This is great. But the further you get along, that
- 16:37Speaker 1: last piece of change gets harder and harder and harder.
- 16:40Speaker 1: To get to, you know, it's like let's keep talking
- 16:43Speaker 1: about the milk and the water here. To turn the
- 16:45Speaker 1: milk down to just 1% milk and 99% water requires
- 16:51Speaker 1: 100 gallons. Wow. Right? So the one gallon made 50%
- 16:54Speaker 1: of change. But then we get down to 99 gallons
- 16:57Speaker 1: of water to get down to that 1%. Now do
- 16:59Speaker 1: it again. If we want to get to 99.9%, then
- 17:05Speaker 1: you're talking about hundreds and thousands of gallons to get
- 17:08Speaker 1: that last bit of change. And so what I'm telling
- 17:10Speaker 1: you is that there's always more for you. You're like, man,
- 17:13Speaker 1: I did a lot. I did that first gallon. Look
- 17:15Speaker 1: how much change happened. And then if you are not accelerating,
- 17:19Speaker 1: knowing that there's greatness on the other side of all
- 17:22Speaker 1: of it, not some, not a little bit, But if
- 17:24Speaker 1: you'll do everything, that's where your greatness is. Yes. And
- 17:27Speaker 1: so we can't ever achieve perfection, and we're not preaching
- 17:32Speaker 1: a works-based salvation here. What I'm telling you is this
- 17:36Speaker 1: is how it works. Yeah. God made these laws. Yes. Okay?
- 17:40Speaker 1: And so the point is you can't ever get to 100%,
- 17:44Speaker 1: which is the reason that Christ had to die on
- 17:45Speaker 1: the cross.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Right.
- 17:46Speaker 1: You can't ever do it. Yeah. Only by his perfection
- 17:50Speaker 1: can we get there. But what I'm telling you is
- 17:52Speaker 1: that for your greatness, which is the process that happens
- 17:55Speaker 1: after your salvation, you've got to realize there's a long
- 17:57Speaker 1: race for you to run and you've got to be
- 17:59Speaker 1: willing to do it. And I'm trying to tell you
- 18:00Speaker 1: that you should want to do it because of what
- 18:02Speaker 1: happens on the other side of this. This is Jesus
- 18:05Speaker 1: in Philippians chapter two, verse six through eight. Greatness comes
- 18:09Speaker 1: from the sacrifice. Greatness comes from the willingness to give
- 18:12Speaker 1: not most, not some, but everything. Philippians chapter two, verse
- 18:16Speaker 1: six through eight. It says about Jesus, who being in
- 18:19Speaker 1: very nature, God was already great. did not consider equality
- 18:23Speaker 1: with God something to be used to his own advantage. Rather,
- 18:26Speaker 1: he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of
- 18:29Speaker 1: a servant, being made in human likeness, and being found
- 18:32Speaker 1: in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming
- 18:36Speaker 1: obedient to death, even death on a cross. Where it
- 18:40Speaker 1: then goes on later to say that Jesus' name was
- 18:43Speaker 1: lifted up as the name above every other name, right?
- 18:48Speaker 1: Jesus' name, above the name of God. Yeah. Right? It
- 18:50Speaker 1: says that his name is the name above every other name.
- 18:53Speaker 1: He was the son, not the father. The son's name
- 18:55Speaker 1: is lifted up above every other name. And why is that?
- 18:58Speaker 1: Because he's the one who was willing to give up everything. Yeah.
- 19:01Speaker 2: And I really, I want people to capture what you
- 19:04Speaker 2: just said. Because I think if you heard, like, because
- 19:06Speaker 2: sometimes I think you can look at, like, man, God's
- 19:08Speaker 2: kind of a harsh father. Like, look what he put
- 19:10Speaker 2: his son through. And I think that this is where
- 19:12Speaker 2: people misunderstand. If a father came and said, son, I
- 19:15Speaker 2: want you to be great. I want the absolute best
- 19:18Speaker 2: for you. I have this great plan for you that
- 19:21Speaker 2: you're going to be the one that has all of this.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Everything that I made, I want to give it to you.
- 19:24Speaker 2: It's your inheritance. You'd be like, yes. Now here's the
- 19:27Speaker 2: path for it. Oh, oh.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Right?
- 19:30Speaker 2: Like that's not the path. I thought the path would be,
- 19:32Speaker 2: we think of like Nepo babies where it's like everything's
- 19:34Speaker 2: just kind of handed to them. But what happens with that, G?
- 19:36Speaker 1: They don't perform.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Because they're not able, they didn't become the type of
- 19:40Speaker 2: person who could actually rule that type of environment. And
- 19:43Speaker 2: Jesus is the pattern for all of us. What we're
- 19:45Speaker 2: saying is it's like, look, guys, This life, this is
- 19:48Speaker 2: the spiritual dichotomy. So oftentimes like you give to get right.
- 19:52Speaker 2: And that's like where we come from. It's like, well,
- 19:53Speaker 2: if I, you know, the example you gave dilution was
- 19:55Speaker 2: so great. Cause you see this in people's weight loss journey,
- 19:58Speaker 2: they start like doing the right thing, stop eating sugar
- 20:00Speaker 2: and all the fatty foods. And they're like, I lost
- 20:02Speaker 2: 15 pounds last week. And you're like, oh my gosh,
- 20:04Speaker 2: And you do a straight line analysis and you go, well,
- 20:06Speaker 2: I'm 100 pounds overweight, so I'm going to do this
- 20:08Speaker 2: for another five weeks and I'll only have 10 more
- 20:11Speaker 2: pounds to lose.
- 20:12Speaker 3: Nope.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Doesn't work that way.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Doesn't work that way.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Law of diminishing returns. That's it.
- 20:16Speaker 2: But at the same time, if it's only about the outcome,
- 20:18Speaker 2: you'll give up. But if it's about who you're supposed
- 20:20Speaker 2: to become, you will run forever because you'll understand, one,
- 20:24Speaker 2: you're walking with your Father, and the whole point is
- 20:26Speaker 2: that you're getting to know God more. Two, you realize
- 20:28Speaker 2: what it's doing in you and that this is the
- 20:30Speaker 2: transformation process, and that that's really what God is after,
- 20:34Speaker 2: is that we would be conformed to the image of
- 20:36Speaker 2: His Son. I think it's such an amazing thing to
- 20:38Speaker 2: realize what you said about Philippians 2. So, G, I mean,
- 20:41Speaker 2: we see this over and over again about Jesus telling us.
- 20:45Speaker 1: What I want you to understand here is... This is a, there's,
- 20:49Speaker 1: scripture is full of dichotomy. I was talking about one
- 20:52Speaker 1: the other day of, you just, you've got to understand
- 20:55Speaker 1: these wisdom principles. Talking about on here the other day,
- 20:58Speaker 1: how in Proverbs, it says that a foolish man pursues wealth,
- 21:02Speaker 1: but it says that wealth exists in the house of
- 21:04Speaker 1: the wise man. How can these two things be true?
- 21:06Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:07Speaker 1: You've got to understand these dichotomies. This is the most
- 21:10Speaker 1: important dichotomy that you can understand how these two things
- 21:13Speaker 1: seem like they're competing against each other. but they actually
- 21:16Speaker 1: reveal the principle nature of how the matter works. Matthew 16,
- 21:20Speaker 1: verse 25, for whoever would save his life will lose it,
- 21:24Speaker 1: but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
- 21:27Speaker 1: If you try to keep it, you'll lose it, but
- 21:29Speaker 1: if you're willing to give it up, you get all
- 21:30Speaker 1: of it. This is what you have to understand. If
- 21:33Speaker 1: you're listening to this show, it's not because you're trying
- 21:36Speaker 1: to get a little bit of personal growth and development.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Or maybe you're new and you're learning still that it's
- 21:40Speaker 1: not just about a little bit of personal growth and development.
- 21:42Speaker 1: It's about transformation. It's about the real process that's going
- 21:45Speaker 1: to get you what you want. Personal growth and development
- 21:47Speaker 1: sounds nice and it gets you a little bit of
- 21:49Speaker 1: a way down the road. But then you realize there's
- 21:51Speaker 1: a gap that you can't jump over. And you're going
- 21:53Speaker 1: to have to change. Not just be a little bit better.
- 21:55Speaker 1: You're going to have to change. And this is what
- 21:56Speaker 1: God has called you to through transformation. And this is
- 21:58Speaker 1: the understanding. This is the dichotomy I'm trying to teach you.
- 22:02Speaker 1: is that only by willing to give up everything can
- 22:05Speaker 1: you get what you were called to do. Jesus modeled
- 22:07Speaker 1: it for us. By being willing to become a man,
- 22:10Speaker 1: to give up everything, to be willing to serve, then greatness.
- 22:13Speaker 1: And this is what we want for you. This is
- 22:15Speaker 1: what we should be pursuing. I want everything that God
- 22:17Speaker 1: created me for. I want the real process. I want
- 22:20Speaker 1: the real meaning. I want to achieve my purpose. And
- 22:22Speaker 1: you can only do that by being willing to give everything.
- 22:25Speaker 1: And that's the hard part. We have this diminishing return
- 22:28Speaker 1: in our heart of like, Well, God, I'll give you
- 22:30Speaker 1: a lot, but not that.
- 22:31Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:31Speaker 1: You must give everything. Yeah.
- 22:33Speaker 2: I love what you say every week at Mighty Menji,
- 22:35Speaker 2: and I always love it. You talk about how a
- 22:38Speaker 2: butterfly is not a caterpillar with wings.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:40Speaker 2: It's that the caterpillar has to completely die.
- 22:42Speaker 1: It dies.
- 22:42Speaker 2: And that's actual transformation. It's not that you're like, you
- 22:45Speaker 2: just kept getting better. It's that that old person completely
- 22:48Speaker 2: died and that.
- 22:49Speaker 1: The new man was raised. And if you didn't know this, right, the...
- 22:53Speaker 1: Just on that reference there, Romans, if you come to
- 22:56Speaker 1: Mighty Men, you know this. If you've been listening to
- 22:57Speaker 1: the show for a long time, you know this. But
- 22:59Speaker 1: in Romans 12, 2, where it is the call to
- 23:02Speaker 1: be transform your thinking, transform your mind. English transformation, that's
- 23:06Speaker 1: the word we talk about. Well, that English word transformation
- 23:10Speaker 1: is the Greek word metamorphou, which is the root of
- 23:13Speaker 1: the word that we know in English, metamorphosis, which is
- 23:16Speaker 1: the process of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. They're the
- 23:19Speaker 1: same thing, right? English transformation... root word metamorphoo, what we
- 23:23Speaker 1: call metamorphosis, it is a death and a resurrection. The
- 23:26Speaker 1: caterpillar dies, liquefies, and becomes a butterfly. That's what God's
- 23:30Speaker 1: called you to. He's not called you to, let's make
- 23:32Speaker 1: your thinking a little bit better. He says, I'm going
- 23:33Speaker 1: to burn down your thinking.
- 23:34Speaker 2: Dude, my mind just went to Morpheus, and he helped
- 23:37Speaker 2: Neo become the one.
- 23:39Speaker 1: The transformation.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Dude, that movie really is about the gospel, bro. I'm
- 23:42Speaker 2: telling you, dude.
- 23:44Speaker 1: On the dichotomy here, I want to give just a
- 23:46Speaker 1: couple scriptures, because this is such a core concept, and
- 23:49Speaker 1: we could probably do... A few more episodes. There's actually
- 23:53Speaker 1: a few dozen dichotomies in Scripture that we could pull
- 23:56Speaker 1: out and teach on, but I wanna give you... These
- 23:58Speaker 1: are a couple of other Scriptures just because this specific
- 24:01Speaker 1: dichotomy is so core of transformation of the death and resurrection.
- 24:04Speaker 1: It's the principal dichotomy in Scripture, the sacrifice, the altar.
- 24:07Speaker 1: You must give it all to achieve your purpose. I
- 24:10Speaker 1: wanna give a couple more Scriptures on this. John 12,
- 24:13Speaker 1: verse 24,' Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel
- 24:16Speaker 1: of wheat falls to the ground and dies.' it remains
- 24:19Speaker 1: only a seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Only through the death can you produce fruit. Matthew 20,
- 24:26Speaker 1: verse 26 through 28. Not so with you. Instead, whoever
- 24:31Speaker 1: wants to become great among you must be your servant,
- 24:34Speaker 1: and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Just as the Son of Man did not come to
- 24:38Speaker 1: be served, but to serve and to give his life
- 24:40Speaker 1: as a ransom for many. You want to be great?
- 24:42Speaker 1: Go low.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so good. Gee, I love that John 12,
- 24:45Speaker 2: 24 scripture. I think when we get to heaven, now
- 24:48Speaker 2: we know in part, then we'll fully know, as Paul said.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I think we're going to realize that God's been speaking
- 24:54Speaker 2: to us in millions of ways all throughout nature. I
- 24:58Speaker 2: think it's always great when you read that Jesus illustrates
- 25:00Speaker 2: these principles in Colonel V. We're like, yeah, well, yeah,
- 25:03Speaker 2: of course, that makes sense. I think when we get
- 25:06Speaker 2: to heaven, we're going to understand like, oh my gosh,
- 25:08Speaker 2: God was speaking all the time about the wisdom of
- 25:10Speaker 2: his ways in nature, in every single thing around us.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And we're walking around comfortably numb with our senses completely
- 25:16Speaker 2: dulled and we missed it. But what I find is
- 25:18Speaker 2: as you go on and you see real spiritual wisdom,
- 25:21Speaker 2: you're like, oh, of course. It's not the weird thing
- 25:24Speaker 2: that you never saw. It was the thing that was
- 25:26Speaker 2: right in front of you the whole time that you
- 25:27Speaker 2: just misunderstood. And I think that that's really going to
- 25:29Speaker 2: be what the revelation is. And so I think the
- 25:31Speaker 2: thing is as well, G, what do we say? What's
- 25:34Speaker 2: at the top of the mountains?
- 25:35Speaker 1: More mountains.
- 25:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:37Speaker 2: That mindset. will equip you for this greatness because there's
- 25:40Speaker 2: always another test.
- 25:42Speaker 1: It's, um, I was talking about this in mighty men yesterday.
- 25:44Speaker 1: I was telling the story of King Asa, King Asa,
- 25:47Speaker 1: King Asa. This is in second Chronicles where, you know, originally,
- 25:51Speaker 1: and it's the, it's a second Chronicles. I think it's 16, nine.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Don't get mad if I messed that up, but you know, I,
- 25:57Speaker 1: I love this scripture. Everyone loves the scripture. The eyes
- 25:59Speaker 1: of the Lord search to and fro looking for a
- 26:01Speaker 1: man whose heart is loyal to him or devoted to him.
- 26:03Speaker 1: So I love it. It's like, God, I want to,
- 26:05Speaker 1: I want to be that.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Right.
- 26:06Speaker 1: And that's the, um, Well, anyways, so King Asa, right
- 26:11Speaker 1: before this, you know, King Asa has trusted God when
- 26:15Speaker 1: King Asa served a million-man army. I mean, fought against
- 26:18Speaker 1: a million-man army, and God took care of it. So
- 26:21Speaker 1: it's like King Asa's like, yeah, this guy's serving God,
- 26:24Speaker 1: following God, of course. Like, God, you did everything. Yet
- 26:27Speaker 1: later on, King Asa gets scared and cuts a deal
- 26:30Speaker 1: for certainty instead of trust. He takes money from the
- 26:33Speaker 1: temple to go cut a deal with a foreign enemy.
- 26:36Speaker 1: and shows certainty, and it works for a little bit
- 26:38Speaker 1: until the prophet comes and says to him, 2 Chronicles 16, 9,
- 26:42Speaker 1: it's actually a prophet's rebuke, saying, the eyes of the
- 26:45Speaker 1: Lord search to and fro, looking for a man who's
- 26:48Speaker 1: loyal to him, but it's not you. And for the
- 26:50Speaker 1: rest of your life, you'll know nothing but war.
- 26:52Speaker 2: And that's the part people leave out. I pulled it
- 26:54Speaker 2: up here because it says, for the eyes of the
- 26:55Speaker 2: Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts
- 26:58Speaker 2: are fully committed to him. And it's like, yes. But wait,
- 27:01Speaker 2: there's a second half to that verse. It's not even
- 27:03Speaker 2: verse 10. You have done a foolish thing. And from
- 27:06Speaker 2: now on, you will be at war.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, dang. The point is there's always another test. Yeah.
- 27:12Speaker 1: This is why you need the concert. It's why you
- 27:14Speaker 1: need humility. It's why you need the constant encouragement, the
- 27:17Speaker 1: reminder that just because I passed the last test doesn't
- 27:20Speaker 1: mean I'm going to pass the next test. You've got
- 27:21Speaker 1: to have the same mindset. You've got to continue to
- 27:23Speaker 1: renew your heart. You've got to stay on your knees
- 27:24Speaker 1: before the Lord. Yeah, man, it was so hard to
- 27:27Speaker 1: pour that gallon of water into the gallon of milk
- 27:30Speaker 1: to make this change. Like, oh, man, that was tough. Well,
- 27:32Speaker 1: the next... To make the next amount of change, you've
- 27:35Speaker 1: got to do two gallons. To make the next amount
- 27:37Speaker 1: of change, it's 10 gallons. To make the next amount
- 27:39Speaker 1: of change, it's another 100 gallons. And what you thought
- 27:41Speaker 1: was impossible will become your daily task.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. And we're going to dive into what
- 27:46Speaker 2: all of it means. But fun story for you podcast
- 27:48Speaker 2: fans and even for you new people. Well, this mindset
- 27:52Speaker 2: of obedience to death, because I heard John Bevere say
- 27:55Speaker 2: this recently. I think he said it on our podcast
- 27:58Speaker 2: as well. 75% of the people that we read about
- 28:00Speaker 2: in the Bible did not finish well. Yeah. Dang it.
- 28:02Speaker 1: 75%.
- 28:04Speaker 2: So when you and I first started this podcast, we
- 28:06Speaker 2: had literally just started ramping up, and you had a
- 28:09Speaker 2: vision for what it was going to be far beyond
- 28:10Speaker 2: I did. That's very clear. And I remember you came
- 28:13Speaker 2: to me and you said, dude, let's get tattoos that
- 28:15Speaker 2: say obedient unto death. Now, I have no tattoos. You
- 28:18Speaker 2: are a frogman, so you have a healthy number of tattoos.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I'm actually low in tattoo count for a frogman.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Are you?
- 28:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Okay.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Okay.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Well, you still have them.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:26Speaker 2: And you win that contest easily on this podcast. Well,
- 28:30Speaker 2: little known fact. So I was like, okay. I was like, yeah,
- 28:32Speaker 2: let's do it. I went and talked to my wife
- 28:34Speaker 2: who does not like tattoos.
- 28:36Speaker 1: And she was like, what?
- 28:37Speaker 2: I was like, babe, I actually got to the point
- 28:40Speaker 2: because I talked to her. I said, hey, this is important.
- 28:42Speaker 2: This is why. And she was like, okay, I'd be okay.
- 28:44Speaker 2: And we were talking about the location. Now, we never
- 28:46Speaker 2: actually did that.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I'd still do it.
- 28:47Speaker 2: So would I.
- 28:48Speaker 1: I would 100%. That's how you know it's a good tattoo.
- 28:51Speaker 1: It's one of the things. People ask me. because they
- 28:53Speaker 1: respect me. They're like, should I get tattoos? I go,
- 28:56Speaker 1: you know, to young people when you're 18, no. Yeah.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Dude, I need tribal art, bro.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Don't, you know, women, it's my personal opinion here. I'm
- 29:04Speaker 1: not a fan of tattoos on females, personal opinion. You know,
- 29:09Speaker 1: but if you're going to get a tattoo, you should
- 29:11Speaker 1: know this is what I want. Don't get a tattoo
- 29:15Speaker 1: until you know who you are. When you know who
- 29:17Speaker 1: you are, sure, go for it.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Dude, I got these Chinese symbols.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Exactly. You know, like, you know, when I, like, The
- 29:23Speaker 1: first tattoo I got is my half sleeve, which is
- 29:25Speaker 1: an angel pushing a demon back into hell. And it's
- 29:28Speaker 1: Matthew 10, 34, where Jesus said, I did not come
- 29:31Speaker 1: to bring peace, but a sword. Right. Right. It's who
- 29:34Speaker 1: I am. Yeah. Right. I knew who I was. Like,
- 29:36Speaker 1: that was the first tattoo I got. And I, that
- 29:39Speaker 1: was my thought then. Like, I don't want to get
- 29:40Speaker 1: some rinky dink tattoo that I don't know what it's about.
- 29:43Speaker 1: And later on in my life, I'm not still proud
- 29:45Speaker 1: of that.
- 29:45Speaker 2: I always had that thought. I was like, if I'm
- 29:46Speaker 2: going to get a tattoo, it's going to be something important.
- 29:48Speaker 2: And the reason I never got tattoos is because nothing
- 29:50Speaker 2: was that important that I needed to have a tattoo.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Well, didn't think we'd be sharing our opinion on tattoos.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Yeah. But I just thought, but, but is that thought
- 29:56Speaker 2: process that you, you instilled from the very beginning, And
- 29:59Speaker 2: it's something that I've grasped is like, look, is to
- 30:02Speaker 2: be obedient to death. To me, a great death is
- 30:04Speaker 2: not that you try and cower and prevent it and
- 30:06Speaker 2: get a few more days. It's that you run out
- 30:09Speaker 2: literally into your grave the same way that you lived
- 30:11Speaker 2: your entire life. That it's like in the face of
- 30:13Speaker 2: overwhelming opposition where you know it's not going to end right,
- 30:15Speaker 2: you go, I'm still going to be faithful. And that's
- 30:17Speaker 2: what you have to capture it. There's this Greek proverb
- 30:20Speaker 2: that says, a society grows great when old men plant
- 30:22Speaker 2: trees in whose shade they shall never sit.
- 30:24Speaker 1: That's how you want to finish. It's a Greek proverb,
- 30:28Speaker 1: but this is common if you know a lot of
- 30:30Speaker 1: the core of the American Revolution history. And this was
- 30:34Speaker 1: the thought of the founding fathers. And obviously they were
- 30:38Speaker 1: well studied. And this was something that they thought on.
- 30:40Speaker 1: It's in one of George Washington's manuscripts. He talks about this.
- 30:45Speaker 1: This is what America is. All of the founding fathers,
- 30:48Speaker 1: they bled and died and never really saw the greatness
- 30:50Speaker 1: of what America was supposed to become. They planted trees
- 30:54Speaker 1: from whose shade they never sat under. Like, I'm going
- 30:56Speaker 1: to build, I'm going to do this thing, I'm going
- 30:57Speaker 1: to plant this thing. I'll never be, I won't be
- 30:59Speaker 1: the beneficiary of it. All right, G.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Well, greatness is getting all of it, man. We've got
- 31:04Speaker 2: to go a little deeper into what all of it means, dude. So,
- 31:07Speaker 2: I mean, very first thing put down is that it's
- 31:10Speaker 2: all of me.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yeah, so gonna break down a few pieces of this
- 31:14Speaker 1: here for you, right? This is the path that we're
- 31:16Speaker 1: pushing you down, the path of greatness, right? And we
- 31:20Speaker 1: explain this dichotomy of you have to give everything to
- 31:24Speaker 1: get all of it. Until you're willing to give it up,
- 31:26Speaker 1: you lose it, right? So greatness is giving all of it.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Let me explain what all of it is. It's three
- 31:30Speaker 1: things here. Number one, the first piece of it is
- 31:35Speaker 1: all of yourself. And more specifically... All of your heart. Yes.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Got Nick's favorite scripture here, so I'll let him read it.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Proverbs 3, 5, and 6. Trust the Lord with all
- 31:43Speaker 2: your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In
- 31:47Speaker 2: all your ways, acknowledge him and he will direct your paths.
- 31:50Speaker 2: My life scripture.
- 31:51Speaker 1: It says trust the Lord with all your heart.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Okay. And this is where we live in a soft society. Yeah. Okay.
- 31:57Speaker 1: We live in a soft society. And it really, the
- 32:00Speaker 1: same way, like when you really learn to study scripture,
- 32:02Speaker 1: you realize I have to go back and get context.
- 32:05Speaker 1: I have to learn how things worked at the time
- 32:09Speaker 1: to really understand the scripture. You've got to zoom out
- 32:13Speaker 1: a little bit on world and human history and realize
- 32:16Speaker 1: we live in such a soft and egalitarian society where
- 32:19Speaker 1: it's like, oh, well, it's okay for everybody and we
- 32:21Speaker 1: all win and participation trophies. Participation trophies and effort trophies
- 32:25Speaker 1: are this nonsense that's been brought about in short, relevant
- 32:29Speaker 1: human history. But you've got to understand you're not getting
- 32:33Speaker 1: a participation trophy for like, God wants all of your heart.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Not some of it, not a little bit of it.
- 32:39Speaker 1: He wants you to give all of your heart. I
- 32:41Speaker 1: went through, when I was in the military, this is,
- 32:44Speaker 1: and it's informed my lens of the way I live
- 32:46Speaker 1: my life today and the way I look at scripture.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Going through the military, it is harsh training. The Bible
- 32:51Speaker 1: talks about, hey, you need some harsh training. Military for
- 32:54Speaker 1: me was harsh training. They would not tolerate good. They
- 32:58Speaker 1: only accepted a full answer, a complete process. Do exactly
- 33:03Speaker 1: as we tell you to do. Not, well, I got
- 33:05Speaker 1: to a similar result. I did most of what you said. No,
- 33:10Speaker 1: all of it. I want all of your heart. And
- 33:12Speaker 1: this is really to... If you want greatness with your life,
- 33:15Speaker 1: you have to give your heart fully to God. Yes.
- 33:18Speaker 1: And I was talking about this yesterday at Mighty Men.
- 33:21Speaker 1: I'll never get there. I'll never get... I will not
- 33:24Speaker 1: give all of... I will try. I will try, but
- 33:27Speaker 1: I'll never get there. It's the diminishing returns. I can
- 33:30Speaker 1: never fix the sinful nature in me. Now, Christ's blood...
- 33:34Speaker 1: has renewed me in that. And I have, you know what?
- 33:37Speaker 1: I can go, I can get on my knees and repent.
- 33:40Speaker 1: I can go five minutes without sinning. And it says
- 33:42Speaker 1: that it is possible for me, yet no one has
- 33:44Speaker 1: done it. Only Christ has done that. I will not
- 33:47Speaker 1: attain to this, but I will pursue it. And what
- 33:49Speaker 1: you've got to continually be doing is, because if you don't,
- 33:53Speaker 1: if you're not cleaning out your heart before the Lord,
- 33:55Speaker 1: I promise you, you're going in the wrong direction. And
- 33:57Speaker 1: so this is why I talk about this all the time.
- 33:59Speaker 1: You've got to be on your knees in a daily
- 34:01Speaker 1: process of saying, God, take the things out of me
- 34:04Speaker 1: that are not like you. And the closer you get
- 34:07Speaker 1: to God, this is just my experience, the closer you
- 34:10Speaker 1: get to God, it gets harder and it gets more
- 34:12Speaker 1: painful to fix these little things inside of you that
- 34:15Speaker 1: you know need to be brought out. And then as
- 34:17Speaker 1: soon as you're like, man, I've done it, like I've
- 34:19Speaker 1: removed the things, God will reveal new things to you.
- 34:22Speaker 1: You've got to continually grow. And that's just the process.
- 34:25Speaker 1: It's the hard part in SEAL training. The most difficult
- 34:29Speaker 1: runs are the runs that you don't know how far
- 34:31Speaker 1: it is. And you've got to be willing to just say, God...
- 34:33Speaker 1: I'll go as far as you want me to go.
- 34:35Speaker 2: And thank God that it is a process of God
- 34:37Speaker 2: taking us through it because what you just said is exactly,
- 34:40Speaker 2: I agree 100% is what I'm experiencing as well. And
- 34:43Speaker 2: what it feels like is just God removing selfishness. So
- 34:46Speaker 2: we always go back to Philippians 2 as like saying
- 34:48Speaker 2: what the pinnacle of dilution looked at. Because at the
- 34:50Speaker 2: point that Jesus is dying on the cross, he's poured
- 34:52Speaker 2: out literally everything. There's no selfish reason where it's like, well,
- 34:55Speaker 2: you know, this is gonna be pretty cool later down
- 34:56Speaker 2: the road. You know, you're in agony. You've got all
- 34:59Speaker 2: the people that love you have just left you. But
- 35:01Speaker 2: it's like, and you knew exactly what you were going
- 35:03Speaker 2: to do. And so it's that removal of selfishness. It's ongoing.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Thank God he doesn't do it all at once.
- 35:08Speaker 1: And the same way I was talking about the diminishing returns, right?
- 35:12Speaker 1: I want to share a Tony Robbins quote here, just
- 35:15Speaker 1: because I'm trying to get you to under... We haven't
- 35:17Speaker 1: done that in a while. It's been a minute. I
- 35:19Speaker 1: want to share this Tony Robbins quote with you, just
- 35:21Speaker 1: because he's displaying this principle, right? Tony Robbins is a
- 35:24Speaker 1: guy who takes a lot of biblical stuff and a
- 35:26Speaker 1: lot of He sees wisdom, he understands principles, and he teaches, hey,
- 35:30Speaker 1: this is what works, okay? I'm just using this as
- 35:33Speaker 1: an example of whether you like him or not, maybe
- 35:37Speaker 1: you appreciate him, maybe you don't. This is an example
- 35:40Speaker 1: of this is what's true, this is what works. And
- 35:43Speaker 1: so the only reason we do this is the Bible
- 35:46Speaker 1: is the core foundation for us. But what I'm actually
- 35:49Speaker 1: trying to show people is You know, when you realize
- 35:51Speaker 1: that truth is found in other places and it points
- 35:53Speaker 1: back to the Bible, it should strengthen the way that
- 35:56Speaker 1: you look at the Bible.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it doesn't just work in God's corner, because God's
- 35:59Speaker 2: corner is the entire earth.
- 36:00Speaker 1: And for those who put their weight on the Bible,
- 36:04Speaker 1: what I'm trying to show you is this will affect
- 36:06Speaker 1: every area of your life. Tony Robbins is, from a
- 36:09Speaker 1: worldly context, insanely successful. Yeah. Okay? Insanely successful. And he
- 36:14Speaker 1: lives by biblical principles. This is one of them. Okay,
- 36:16Speaker 1: here's what he says.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Very good.
- 36:17Speaker 1: You can't succeed by being good. That's what you get
- 36:20Speaker 1: paid for. You can't succeed by being excellent. That's what
- 36:24Speaker 1: you're expected to do. You can only succeed by being outstanding.
- 36:28Speaker 1: I think it's in his book and in his teaching series,
- 36:32Speaker 1: Awaken the Giant, where he talks about this, but he's
- 36:34Speaker 1: telling people like all of the rewards in life come
- 36:37Speaker 1: from being outstanding, right? It's at the end of the road, right?
- 36:40Speaker 1: Like what do you think, what's the reward for being
- 36:44Speaker 1: poor at your job? What do you get paid for
- 36:46Speaker 1: being poor at your job? You get fired.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Right, I was going to say, yeah.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Right? So if you get fired, what do you get
- 36:51Speaker 1: for being good at your job? Well, you get paid,
- 36:53Speaker 1: or maybe you could also get eliminated.
- 36:55Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:56Speaker 1: If you're great or excellent at your job, you know
- 36:58Speaker 1: you'll at least stay and maybe get some promotions.
- 37:01Speaker 3: Right.
- 37:02Speaker 1: If you are outstanding at something, these are the people
- 37:05Speaker 1: who are outstanding at things, you get paid 10, 100,
- 37:08Speaker 1: or 1,000 times more than the people who are good. Yeah.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Now, as you're saying that, man, I hope people are
- 37:14Speaker 2: applying that filter to themselves. Because I'm looking at myself
- 37:16Speaker 2: and I'm applying that to me in marketing. I work
- 37:18Speaker 2: with a lot of big companies. I'm not outstanding.
- 37:21Speaker 3: Why?
- 37:21Speaker 2: Because you just said 10, 100, 1,000 X. I don't
- 37:24Speaker 2: make that. That's just a real filter of being like
- 37:26Speaker 2: this is.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Where you're at. You can find hotels that it's like
- 37:29Speaker 1: that's a really good hotel and it's $ 700 a night.
- 37:31Speaker 3: Right.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Now the hotel that's outstanding, it's $ 3, 200 a night.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:36Speaker 1: The dirt doesn't cost that much more. Paying the people
- 37:38Speaker 1: doesn't cost that much more. But these are the people
- 37:41Speaker 1: who have gone to the extreme measure. The baseball players,
- 37:44Speaker 1: the athletes, the business people, the ones who are outstanding,
- 37:47Speaker 1: they're paid 10, 100, or thousands of times more than
- 37:50Speaker 1: the people who are good. Maybe you don't have a
- 37:53Speaker 1: desire to make Hundreds of millions or billions of dollars,
- 37:55Speaker 1: doesn't matter. I don't care if that's what you want.
- 37:58Speaker 1: What I'm showing you is this is the way it works. What?
- 38:01Speaker 1: All of it. This is the way God works. This
- 38:04Speaker 1: is the way the world works.
- 38:05Speaker 2: Money is easy to define it, which is why we're
- 38:07Speaker 2: using it. But look at your life like this. What's
- 38:09Speaker 2: the fruit in your life of your marriage? I will
- 38:12Speaker 2: tell you, I'm very proud of my family, and I've
- 38:14Speaker 2: seen fruit. I would say the only thing that's outstanding
- 38:17Speaker 2: in my life right now is the family I'm building, truthfully.
- 38:19Speaker 2: I really mean that. And when I look at the
- 38:21Speaker 2: fruit that I'm starting to experience that, I'm not even
- 38:23Speaker 2: fully there yet, but look at your dad. Your dad
- 38:25Speaker 2: is outstanding in the family. Outstanding. And does he have 30, 60,
- 38:29Speaker 2: 100 X? Oh yeah. He's got kids that are running
- 38:31Speaker 2: hard after the Lord that want to be around him.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Like he's got a wonderful marriage. Yeah. And so like
- 38:36Speaker 2: those are the places like we can't tell you, we
- 38:38Speaker 2: can't measure what 30, 60, 100 X, but you look
- 38:40Speaker 2: at what the average family is and what people say
- 38:42Speaker 2: about their family. Then you look at what he's experiencing.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Very different.
- 38:45Speaker 1: And just this last thought here on marriage. outstanding on greatness,
- 38:49Speaker 1: on what's there at the edge of the road. This
- 38:51Speaker 1: is similar to the... This is a thought you need
- 38:53Speaker 1: to have, right? Because think about our founding fathers who said,
- 38:57Speaker 1: they're not going to sit under the tree from... Of
- 39:02Speaker 1: the shade of the tree that they're planting, okay? But
- 39:05Speaker 1: what is the thing that they planted? It's the greatest
- 39:07Speaker 1: nation that's ever existed. America. Okay? So now that's a
- 39:11Speaker 1: great thing that they did. And You know, in some
- 39:14Speaker 1: way they do sit under that shade. Look at how
- 39:16Speaker 1: they're looked at in history. Yeah, for sure. But only,
- 39:19Speaker 1: and they did, you know, George Washington also lived a
- 39:22Speaker 1: great life.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Okay.
- 39:23Speaker 1: He got to see lots of great things in his time,
- 39:25Speaker 1: but he also didn't get to see all the seeds
- 39:27Speaker 1: that he planted. When you don't require of God, and
- 39:31Speaker 1: this is a huge flip that you have to change
- 39:33Speaker 1: in the way that you think, the way that you live.
- 39:35Speaker 1: When you don't require of God that you get to
- 39:37Speaker 1: see the fruit of every seed you've ever sown, when
- 39:40Speaker 1: you let go of that, that is when you will
- 39:43Speaker 1: do the greatest thing you could do in your life.
- 39:45Speaker 1: Because most people, they're like, well, God, I'll only do
- 39:47Speaker 1: this as long as you're going to show me the fruit.
- 39:49Speaker 1: You're limited. You're not willing to give all of it.
- 39:52Speaker 1: And this is great faith. This is Paul's faith. And
- 39:55Speaker 1: let's just go on to the next point here. So
- 39:57Speaker 1: first piece of all of it is all of yourself.
- 40:00Speaker 1: And then the second piece is to do it for
- 40:03Speaker 1: all of time. Okay? This is what Paul would talk about.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Paul's trophy in Scripture isn't, man... I stared those dudes
- 40:12Speaker 1: in the face, and they stoned me to death. And
- 40:13Speaker 1: I got up, and I did the next thing. Boom.
- 40:16Speaker 1: That's not Paul's trophy. The trophy that Paul stands on,
- 40:18Speaker 1: because Paul accolades himself a little bit, right? The trophy
- 40:21Speaker 1: that Paul stands on is, I finished my race. I
- 40:24Speaker 1: ran it all the way to the end. He knows
- 40:26Speaker 1: he's in his last day. It's about to be executed.
- 40:28Speaker 1: He's like, I'm not giving up now. I'm about to
- 40:31Speaker 1: live my last day here. He says, I finished it.
- 40:34Speaker 1: I did it all the way to the end. And
- 40:35Speaker 1: you need to think about all of it for your
- 40:37Speaker 1: life of like, Because when you've got that retirement mentality,
- 40:40Speaker 1: it's a disease that'll infect every other area of your life.
- 40:43Speaker 1: And you're saying, well, if I go hard for this
- 40:46Speaker 1: amount of time, then I could get this. Then I
- 40:48Speaker 1: can do whatever I want. That is, at its very core,
- 40:51Speaker 1: a sinful thought process. Yeah, it's selfish. And so you
- 40:53Speaker 1: can be trying to do the right thing. But when
- 40:55Speaker 1: it is planted on the wrong foundation, it's not going
- 40:57Speaker 1: to produce. When you say, this is who I'm going
- 41:00Speaker 1: to be. This is what I'm going to do. This
- 41:02Speaker 1: is how I'm going to roll for the rest of
- 41:04Speaker 1: my life. that is when you're walking the greatness path.
- 41:08Speaker 1: Because only when you're willing, when you'll say, I'll do...
- 41:11Speaker 1: And that's what they're testing in Hell Week, right? The
- 41:13Speaker 1: way I've described Hell Week and why is it as
- 41:15Speaker 1: long as it is from Sunday to Friday that you
- 41:16Speaker 1: don't sleep, you run over 200 miles, because they know
- 41:20Speaker 1: on Friday, the guys who are still there, all of
- 41:22Speaker 1: these guys would go until they die. Now, some would
- 41:24Speaker 1: die at different times. That's just physiological. But they know
- 41:27Speaker 1: every single one would just keep going all the way
- 41:29Speaker 1: to the end. And that's the test for us and
- 41:31Speaker 1: our greatness. What point will you quit? You've got to
- 41:34Speaker 1: be willing... to run the unknown distance race. I'll run
- 41:37Speaker 1: as far as I can. I'll just keep going all
- 41:39Speaker 1: the way until the end. Until I die, I'm willing
- 41:41Speaker 1: to keep going. And it's that thought process of letting
- 41:44Speaker 1: go of requiring of God that you get to see
- 41:47Speaker 1: the fruit of every seed you've ever planted. So good, man.
- 41:50Speaker 2: And you referenced it with Paul, the 2 Timothy 4, 7,
- 41:52Speaker 2: I fought the good fight. I finished the race. I've
- 41:54Speaker 2: kept the faith. And I mean, I love that point
- 41:56Speaker 2: that you're making. It's not that you just give all
- 41:59Speaker 2: in a moment. It's that you give it all in
- 42:00Speaker 2: every moment, literally for all of time. So if we
- 42:03Speaker 2: got all of me and all of time, it's also
- 42:06Speaker 2: all areas. And this is a stewardship thought process. This
- 42:09Speaker 2: is the third part of all. It's the stewardship thought process.
- 42:12Speaker 2: It says a man cannot receive anything unless it's given
- 42:15Speaker 2: to him from heaven. So we don't have anything. That's
- 42:18Speaker 2: everything in your life. Ultimately, God's given it to you.
- 42:21Speaker 2: And we break it down to eight areas. Those areas
- 42:23Speaker 2: are spirituality. marriage, family, friendships, finance, business, rest, and health.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Now we, if you, we go more into that, we
- 42:30Speaker 2: do that in other episodes. We have our purpose playbook
- 42:32Speaker 2: on school that you can go deep into those, but you,
- 42:35Speaker 2: when you have all those eight areas, you're like, this
- 42:37Speaker 2: is what God's given me to steward, man, that is
- 42:40Speaker 2: where you're like all in on those areas. And stewards
- 42:42Speaker 2: make things grow. They give back a return. So, so like,
- 42:46Speaker 2: I think sometimes we can think all of it is
- 42:48Speaker 2: just like, um, I have to be cramming every single
- 42:51Speaker 2: thing into every single place. And it's like, no, it's
- 42:54Speaker 2: understanding how you make these things grow repeatedly over time.
- 42:57Speaker 1: That's good stewardship. So this is what greatness is. You've
- 43:00Speaker 1: got to decide that, like Nick said at the beginning,
- 43:03Speaker 1: it's the test. I ask Christians, do you believe God
- 43:06Speaker 1: can heal people? The majority say yes. But then the
- 43:09Speaker 1: real test is, do you believe God can heal you?
- 43:11Speaker 1: And in the same sense, do you believe God has
- 43:13Speaker 1: a plan? Is God doing something? Of course. Well, do
- 43:15Speaker 1: you believe God has a plan for you? That's the test.
- 43:18Speaker 1: You've got to believe that. When you believe that God
- 43:21Speaker 1: has a great plan for your life, then you've got
- 43:23Speaker 1: to say, I want to be the price payer. Go back,
- 43:25Speaker 1: listen to our price payer episode. I want to be
- 43:27Speaker 1: the price payer. I want everything that God has for me.
- 43:29Speaker 1: And so we've talked about today is how to get
- 43:32Speaker 1: greatness for your life, how to have everything that he's
- 43:34Speaker 1: created you to do. You've got to decide, I'm going
- 43:37Speaker 1: to give all of myself to God. I want to
- 43:39Speaker 1: give my heart to God. And that's a continual process.
- 43:42Speaker 1: It's the diminishing returns. You're going to fight through it,
- 43:44Speaker 1: but I'm telling you the great reward is on the
- 43:47Speaker 1: other end of everything that you have. You've got to decide,
- 43:50Speaker 1: I'm going to do it for forever. I'm going to
- 43:52Speaker 1: do it for all time. I want to die like Paul.
- 43:54Speaker 1: I finish my race. I've completed what God put me
- 43:57Speaker 1: on the earth to do. And then you've got to
- 43:58Speaker 1: do it in every area of your life. Don't just
- 44:00Speaker 1: do it in one area. Don't just say, I'm going
- 44:02Speaker 1: to be a winner spiritually. Bring God into every single
- 44:05Speaker 1: thing that you do and live this way. Take these principles.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Don't be the fool who gets the grasp of biblical principles,
- 44:12Speaker 1: and you don't live biblical principles in every area of
- 44:15Speaker 1: your life, not just through a lack of courage to
- 44:18Speaker 1: live loud for your faith... but you've literally been handed
- 44:21Speaker 1: the blueprint for success, but you're unwilling to deploy it
- 44:24Speaker 1: in all the other areas of your life. Be great.
