- 0:00This morning we're going to be talking about
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: an invitation by Jesus to not just believe differently about God,
- 0:12but to behave differently in relationship to God and in
- 0:16relationship to the world.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: If you want to follow along, there is an insert in your bulletin.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: You can use that or you can just enjoy listening.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: Or, you know, if you want to rest in the Lord and just take a little nap,
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: That works too.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: In a world of copy and paste, here's a big idea.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Jesus forms a people who are different.
- 0:46Transformed in their minds,
- 0:50woven into one body,
- 0:53propelled by love,
- 0:57and freed.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Freed from worry to seek God's kingdom first.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Family, Paul begins with worship.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Not a playlist, not a place.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: but a body, your bodies, a living sacrifice every day presented to God.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: And then he says,
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: "...do not be conformed to this world,
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: That word conformed has a sense of like being pressed into a mold.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: I grew up with butter molds.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Did anybody grow up with butter molds with little turkeys in them?
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Some of you.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Conformed.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Butter conformed into the shape of a turkey.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Nothing worse than that.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Instead,
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: he says,
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: let God rewire your thinking so that you can discern what is good,
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: pleasing,
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: and perfect.
- 2:15Our brethren heritage has always called us to this place of
- 2:22non-conformity,
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: of being called to be different.
- 2:26Not for weirdness sake,
- 2:29okay,
- 2:30to make that clear,
- 2:32but for Christ's sake,
- 2:35okay?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: J.H.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Moore,
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: who was a Church of the Brethren theologian,
- 2:41insisted that nonconformity relates itself to every single
- 2:47phase of new and
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: consecrated life in Jesus Christ.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: To character,
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: to business,
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: to amusements,
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: and as we are aware,
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: those of us who have grown up in the Church of the Brethren,
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: clothing.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: It's important to remember, it wasn't about legalism.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: It's about letting Jesus,
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: not the market,
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: not the world,
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: not the algorithms of our day,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: to set our patterns.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: There was in 1996 a statement that was presented to annual conference.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: It was a statement on the simple life.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: And it says this.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Simplicity is the way of Jesus.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: God's gift to us.
- 3:43Simplicity is living not conformed to the world but transformed
- 3:50by Jesus Christ.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: That is Romans 12 in Brethren Grammar.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: It's important to remember that God's power is persuasive, not coercive.
- 4:09always inviting us towards that next faithful possibility in
- 4:16this choice or in this
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: conversation or in this relationship.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: So our transformation that we're talking about,
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: it's important to remember that it is relational.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Relational with God,
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: relational with one another,
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: relational with the world,
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: and it is always ongoing.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Transformation is always ongoing.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: It's a journey, not a place.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: If you want a different kind of fruit from a tree, what do you do?
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: You change the root, right?
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: None of us would think,
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: well,
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: it might be cute,
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: but it's not a very good idea to try to stave apples,
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: right,
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: to a thorn bush and call it an apple tree.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: It just doesn't work like that.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: In Christ,
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: God grafts us into a new life source,
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: a new root,
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: if you would like to use that analogy.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: The mind is renewed from the roots up.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: And, of course, that root is Christ.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Nonconformity isn't trendiness.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: It's trust.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Trust.
- 5:38Let God renew your mind so that your life becomes a living yes
- 5:44to what is good,
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: pleasing,
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: and perfect.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: That's what Paul invites us to do in Romans 12.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: And then Paul moves from the mind to members.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: You are one body in Christ, he says.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Individually members of one another.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: The weaker members are indispensable, he says.
- 6:09The parts that we hide or that we dismiss or we lay aside are
- 6:15often the ones that
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: the Spirit wants to bestow the most honor to.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Palmer Becker captures it in this way.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Jesus is the center of our faith, okay?
- 6:33Community is the center of our life,
- 6:36and reconciliation is the center of our work.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Friends, that is not a slogan.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: That is a way of being Christ-centered.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: For some reason, I'm coming across sports analogies these days.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure why the algorithm is...
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: sort of bubbling those to the top as I tried to prepare for my sermons.
- 7:02But I came across this interesting YouTube video of a guy from
- 7:09the Bucs basketball team,
- 7:12right?
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: 2023.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: They lost.
- 7:15And a guy was interviewing,
- 7:17I'm going to try to get this right,
- 7:19Giannis Antetokounmpov.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Okay, I practiced a lot for that.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Did I get it right even close?
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Yay, thank you.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: James is the only one who would know whether I said it right or not.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Woo-hoo!
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: So they lost, and this guy was interviewing them about their failure.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: And he said this incredible thing.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: He says, there is no failure in sports, only steps to success.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: And that is 1 Corinthians 12 posture.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Growth as a team sport together.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: We stumble and then we learn together.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: an interesting sort of side note here,
- 8:11a piece of culture as I was learning about this imagery that
- 8:16Paul is using.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: It was not something that Paul came up with.
- 8:22at the time interestingly enough it came from this this fable
- 8:27right so in Roman
- 8:29times there was this fable and the Roman elites you know the
- 8:34the big dogs the ones
- 8:35that were in charge the ones that were trying to maintain
- 8:37control of the polis of
- 8:40the society at that time time they came up with this fable and
- 8:44the fable said that
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: the limbs once rebelled against the belly and the belly replied well
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: We feed all of you.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: So the limbs should submit to the will of the belly.
- 9:03It was a fable that tried to establish and reestablish this
- 9:09justified hierarchy
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: that was in the Roman polis.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: The privileged stomach at the center.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: And others serving the belly.
- 9:22Paul borrows this metaphor interestingly for the church in
- 9:27those Roman times but he flips it.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: He says, there is no pampered belly in 1 Corinthians 12.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Instead, he insists the members that seem weaker are indispensable.
- 9:44The less honorable ones are the ones who receive the greatest
- 9:50honor in this new
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: kingdom of Jesus Christ.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: That was incredibly culturally relevant at the time,
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: and it was boldly counter-cultural at the time.
- 10:09A Christ-shaped body where honor,
- 10:13respect,
- 10:14and appreciation flow downward.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: And care is mutual, not focused just on the elites.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: This is, again, Romans 12, non-conformity with skin on it.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Not conformed to the status gains, but transformed by Christ's justice.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: In Christ, belonging comes before outperforming.
- 10:39The church is one body where weaker members are indispensable
- 10:44and every single gift matters.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: We read the scripture where Jesus is asked for the greatest commandment.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: I guess the assumption was there would just be one, right?
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: And Jesus gives two instead, right?
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: And he says they're equal.
- 11:02Love God with all your heart,
- 11:04soul,
- 11:04and mind,
- 11:04and love your neighbor as yourself.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Dr. King said it this way.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: This is a beautiful, beautiful statement.
- 11:12The love that I have towards God is the same love that directs
- 11:18itself towards the neighbor.
- 11:22In our simple life statement,
- 11:24it's grounded in that devotion and stewardship.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: It says devotion to God makes us aware that the earth belongs to God.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: It is not ours to possess.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: And that is why love must show up in how we do business,
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: in what we buy,
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: in how we consume,
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: and how we go about caring for creation.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: The statement also laments a widening gap,
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: and this was in 1996,
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: and I think it's only gotten worse,
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: between the rich and the poor,
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: and how consumerism despoils the earth,
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: naming love as economic and ecological as well as personal,
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: like we normally think of it.
- 12:12And it also gives us a community test from a guy called Elder
- 12:17Michael Franz.
- 12:20He wrote this,
- 12:21as long as there is abundance and want,
- 12:25there is no pure,
- 12:28genuine communion.
- 12:31SPEAKER_00: That's a bold and uncomfortable statement for all of us.
- 12:35But it reminds us that love crosses the street and equalizes
- 12:40with the balance of love.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: God is, friends, always luring us towards the most loving next step.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Not overpowering, but persuading our hearts to follow Jesus Christ.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: I'm into cover crops right now.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: Probably not something that you're very much into.
- 13:10But with my new sunflower field and thinking about regenerative
- 13:15agriculture and...
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Oh,
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: some of you are laughing and smiling,
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: so you know about this.
- 13:21You know,
- 13:21for the soil,
- 13:23healing the soil,
- 13:24all of that sort of weird kind of stuff.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: I'm into cover crops, okay?
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: So cover crops,
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: if you're not aware,
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: you plant them not for an immediate harvest or one at all,
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: frankly.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: but to heal the soil.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: The cover crops, they fix nitrogen.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: They keep moisture into the soil.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: They crowd out the weeds that might grow and make the soil infertile.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: In the same way,
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: practicing small acts of love as followers of Jesus Christ,
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: the patient reply,
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: the shared table where we might invite someone to eat with us,
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: the forgiven debt that many of us have experienced or actually practiced,
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: and our cover crops for your heart and our community.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Big fan of Ted Lasso.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Anybody watch Ted Lasso?
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Go home and watch Ted Lasso.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: That's your assignment.
- 14:36The other four things that I say at the end of the sermon,
- 14:38don't worry about this.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: Go home and watch Ted Lasso.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Incredible.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: But Ted Lasso had this sign over the locker room.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: He was a coach.
- 14:47and um and he had uh the sign that just said believe right and
- 14:52it was it was a sign
- 14:54in the locker room that inspired this team to do you know
- 14:58incredible things right
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: and uh it wasn't magic right it just named a shared identity for
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: for this soccer team,
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: football team,
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: and they were English football team,
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: and just transformed them.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Church,
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: our sign over our quote-unquote locker room,
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: our worship space,
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: our lives,
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: our homes,
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: is Jesus is Lord.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Jesus is Lord.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And it hangs there,
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: not as some sort of magic talisman,
- 15:43but as a message and a reminder of how we are formed and how we
- 15:49are transformed
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: into the body of Jesus Christ.
- 15:56We need to remember that the same love that adores God crosses
- 16:00the street to serve
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: our neighbor and stewards creation.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: And finally, Jesus says, don't worry.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Not because life is easy,
- 16:10and we've learned this morning that there's a lot of things in
- 16:13life that are not
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: easy and that we could worry about,
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: but because we are seen in the midst of our uneasiness.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Look at the birds, he says.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Consider the lilies, he says.
- 16:26Your father knows you need food,
- 16:29knows you need clothing,
- 16:31knows you need shelter.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: So turn your eyes towards God.
- 16:36Seek first the kingdom of heaven and rest in being in the
- 16:42seenness of God.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: New Testament scholar Eugene Boring says it this way,
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: address each day's problems as they come,
- 16:55confident your life is held by a loving Father who will bring
- 17:00creation to a worthy
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: conclusion.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Trust, seek first, one day at a time.
- 17:14Again,
- 17:15this 1996 simple life statement says this,
- 17:22integration honors time as God's gift.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Patient, forbearing, unhurried.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: It invites us to an unhurried faithfulness,
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: to live today's obedience and let God hold tomorrow in God's hands.
- 17:41And when temptation whispers,
- 17:44it points us back to seek the kingdom of God.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: I read an interesting article last week in the Wall Street Journal.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: And someone,
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: a researcher,
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: has discovered a new way that people can experience joy and fulfillment.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: in their lives.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: It's a third way they're calling it, interestingly.
- 18:13And typically the ways to experience joy and fulfillment in
- 18:18your life is either
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: through happiness or having a meaningful life.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: And so somebody, I'm not sure exactly who it was.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Maybe I should have read it better.
- 18:28But said this third way is characterized by people who have an
- 18:33ongoing curiosity.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: They experience new things along the way.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: And they allow for perspective shifts in their lives.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Often, it says, accompanied by discomfort.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Discomfort.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: Sounds a lot like discipleship to me.
- 19:00Sounds a lot like what happens when we say yes to Jesus and his
- 19:08perspective of the
- 19:09world and his way of living in the world that is many times
- 19:17characterized by
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: discomfort.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: And somehow, this life of discipleship
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: You know, we experience incredible joy because of it.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: And when the life of discipleship feels costly,
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: we need to remember that simple living is sometimes difficult.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: We came into this journey knowing those things.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: But we also came in this journey knowing
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: knowing that God always provides joy and peace along the way.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: So,
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: we practice trust without panic,
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: action without anxiety,
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: working the soil we have today,
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: and leaving the sunrise for God tomorrow.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Trust trades panic for participation.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Seek ye first the kingdom today and let tomorrow be tomorrow.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: God holds you, friends, and the world in love.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: So, we are called to be different.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: And it's not a badge.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: It's a way of being.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: Where our minds are transformed by God's persuasive love.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: Our worship is lived, not just sung on Sunday mornings.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: As members, we belong to one body.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: And there are no disposable people.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: And honor is shared with everyone.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: Being called to be different is where love is enacted.
- 21:13And that the same love that addresses and adores God crosses
- 21:18the street and cares for creation.
- 21:22And where trust is practiced,
- 21:25unhurried,
- 21:27faithful,
- 21:28seeking first one day at a time.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: The simple life leads us in a prayerful posture.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: We repent of poor stewardship.
- 21:42And it even warns us as a congregation that buildings and
- 21:46budgets can obscure our
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: vision of God and our neighbor.
- 21:53So today we respond with our calendars,
- 21:56with our carts,
- 21:57with our clicks,
- 21:59with our commitments.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: And this week I remind you, practice nonconformity of joy.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Turn off the anxious loop and pray the lilies.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Text someone who feels like a weaker member and honor them.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Choose one cover crop practice of love at home or at work.
- 22:23And ask before every purchase,
- 22:26does this take the shape of Jesus in my life?
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: And finally, hear this.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: You are not made to blend in.
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: You were born again to stand out in love.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: The world does not need another copy.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: The Spirit is making you a living original in Christ.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: May we all embody that.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: Amen.
