- 1:16Speaker 2: Morning fellas.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Are you in your car on the way?
- 1:19Speaker 2: No, I'm standing out in front of the Broncos.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Right, Oh, okay, good, so you're already there.
- 1:23Speaker 1: We're gonna get inside your bubble today, so get ready
- 1:25Speaker 1: for that number one, number two.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Don't mess up, no one.
- 1:27Speaker 2: No one gets inside the bubble, don't.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I'm nuts. There's I'm not sure there's a lot you
- 1:32Speaker 3: can do about it. But we'll see. We'll find out
- 1:34Speaker 3: about ten thirty.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Hey, Leggy, all right, so after day one of camp,
- 1:38Speaker 1: we know who the starting quarterback is, the running back
- 1:41Speaker 1: tight end, right, we know everything right after day one,
- 1:44Speaker 1: or at least people think they do.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm just calling it. I may not come again
- 1:49Speaker 2: a pre season.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Just right, write all your stories right now.
- 1:51Speaker 2: You already know everything, right, that's right, Just pur it
- 1:54Speaker 2: all doubt you know. It's the Uh. It is interesting.
- 1:59Speaker 2: I will be in tree to see how long the
- 2:03Speaker 2: three man rotation goes at quarterback, because my one takeaway
- 2:07Speaker 2: from the first two days we've talked to Sean Payton
- 2:10Speaker 2: is that I said, sort of he wants to speed
- 2:17Speaker 2: up the process and go from three to two to one,
- 2:20Speaker 2: maybe more quickly than we thought he would.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Well it's good, I mean I think that's the way
- 2:27Speaker 1: it should be, right, I mean, you want to get
- 2:29Speaker 1: it right, but I think we all know what direction
- 2:31Speaker 1: it is going to trend in.
- 2:32Speaker 3: And this is legita. Do they keep three? There's no
- 2:36Speaker 3: way they keep three, is there? It just it doesn't
- 2:39Speaker 3: feel like that's a possibility.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I've talked to a bunch of gms in the last
- 2:44Speaker 2: couple of weeks, and the new practice squad rules allow
- 2:49Speaker 2: you to bring up and put back a quarterback every
- 2:53Speaker 2: week if you want to. And you know, last year
- 2:56Speaker 2: only eight teams kept three quarterbacks and it may be
- 2:58Speaker 2: even fewer this time around. And when I sort of
- 3:03Speaker 2: did my own roster for Jetson, it was really hard
- 3:06Speaker 2: to keep three quarterbacks and not cut a player from
- 3:10Speaker 2: another position where they needed a guy more.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Jeffrey, what do you think is preventing Sean Payton from
- 3:18Speaker 4: walking up to a microphone, speaking into the microphone and
- 3:21Speaker 4: telling everybody bo Nicks was drafted twelfth overall? He's our guy,
- 3:26Speaker 4: he's our guy. He's going to get most of the reps.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Why not do? That's what's he waiting for?
- 3:33Speaker 1: You know?
- 3:33Speaker 2: Honestly, Vic, I think Sean has a a genetic piece
- 3:38Speaker 2: that were entitlement is is he just wants to avoid
- 3:44Speaker 2: in any sort of entitlement at all. And honestly, you
- 3:48Speaker 2: got to see how Boonix functions in a real eleven
- 3:53Speaker 2: on eleven full pads. Defense is actually trying situations because
- 3:59Speaker 2: Ota is in mini camp and even even this week, uh,
- 4:03Speaker 2: these early practices. You know, at some point the defense
- 4:07Speaker 2: is told to you know, don't tackle, don't pull the
- 4:11Speaker 2: guy to the ground, don't don't, don't don't. You know,
- 4:14Speaker 2: all the defense is told is what not to do.
- 4:17Speaker 2: So uh, until I think he just wants to see
- 4:21Speaker 2: him in some of those situations. And honestly, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 2: even as a rookie, do you have the backbone to
- 4:27Speaker 2: get in the huddle and tell guys to shut up?
- 4:29Speaker 2: You're calling the play and you know, don't yell at
- 4:34Speaker 2: me that you're open type of stuff. And you just
- 4:37Speaker 2: got to see all those little things. And I honestly,
- 4:39Speaker 2: I think my opinion, my personal opinion is once he
- 4:42Speaker 2: sees them, that's when he would make a decision unless,
- 4:47Speaker 2: you know, one of the other two guys just completely
- 4:51Speaker 2: you know, throws the knockout punch. And I think that's
- 4:54Speaker 2: what it would take. It would take a knockout from
- 4:57Speaker 2: one of the other two guys to to earn the
- 5:00Speaker 2: job just because of the way the dynamics are of
- 5:03Speaker 2: this team.
- 5:04Speaker 4: I totally agree with you on the entitlement angle. Most
- 5:08Speaker 4: veteran coaches don't want to go there out. They want
- 5:10Speaker 4: you to compete. They want young players to be hungry, right.
- 5:13Speaker 4: But the thing I see bo Nicks seems like the
- 5:16Speaker 4: kind of guy that doesn't need that motivation. He doesn't
- 5:18Speaker 4: need that that chip. He's naturally motivated. That's one of
- 5:22Speaker 4: the reasons they drafted the kids. So if you know
- 5:24Speaker 4: the kid's going to be there and he's going to
- 5:26Speaker 4: be at tip top shape, give him.
- 5:30Speaker 3: The reps your weight.
- 5:31Speaker 4: In my opinion, you're wasting reps.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Jeff, Yeah, you know, think I know what you're saying,
- 5:37Speaker 2: and I think that's ultimately why the decision goes his way.
- 5:42Speaker 2: If you know, I think bow Knicks is really competing
- 5:45Speaker 2: against bow Knicks and all of this. You know, if
- 5:48Speaker 2: he if he can show them all the reasons they
- 5:51Speaker 2: drafted him again, you know, then I think that's when
- 5:55Speaker 2: they they make the decision. I mean, really, the reps
- 6:00Speaker 2: from about the second preseason game on, that's when the
- 6:04Speaker 2: reps really start to really really matter. So I think
- 6:08Speaker 2: that that's the window I believe where the decision comes,
- 6:13Speaker 2: because after the second preseason game, you'd really like whoever
- 6:17Speaker 2: the quarterback's going to be to be getting the primo
- 6:22Speaker 2: reps that you want him to get.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Seven oh seven.
- 6:24Speaker 1: This morning, Vic called to Shaun Payton, the Broncos registered dietitian,
- 6:28Speaker 1: and I.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Don't I don't necessarily disagree with him. He had a
- 6:32Speaker 3: lot to say about weight, and he.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Certainly had a lot to say about his his de
- 6:37Speaker 1: facto number one running back right now with Javonte Williams.
- 6:40Speaker 1: But it looks like Javonte has gotten the message, Jeff,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and you know, he slimmed down. He needs to be
- 6:46Speaker 1: a quote running back. Give us your thoughts on a
- 6:50Speaker 1: guy who had a down year last year, had an
- 6:53Speaker 1: injured year the year before, but a guy who is
- 6:55Speaker 1: still very young, and again I go back to that
- 6:57Speaker 1: rookie season, we were all highly.
- 6:59Speaker 3: I us with him.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah, most I think as far as Davante and last season,
- 7:05Speaker 2: I don't think it would have killed the team to
- 7:07Speaker 2: really express how severe his knee injury was. It wasn't
- 7:11Speaker 2: really just you know, quote unquote just an acl He
- 7:16Speaker 2: suffered a significant uh career threatening knee injury and it
- 7:23Speaker 2: took him all the last season even though he played.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I think you should be given credit for playing last
- 7:29Speaker 2: year and and because a lot of guys wouldn't have
- 7:33Speaker 2: been able to and I uh, I think it. I
- 7:36Speaker 2: think it was natural for him to come back from
- 7:39Speaker 2: that injury and look the way he did because a
- 7:42Speaker 2: lot of guys wouldn't have even been in uniform. So uh.
- 7:46Speaker 2: And I think it's pretty common for skilled position guys
- 7:49Speaker 2: because you can't. Injury rehab is a is a lot
- 7:54Speaker 2: different form of conditioning and work than than just getting
- 7:58Speaker 2: ready for the season. So some some times guys do
- 8:01Speaker 2: gain some weight in all of that, and I think
- 8:04Speaker 2: he did as well. And I will say Sean repeats
- 8:09Speaker 2: over and over that for skill position guys on offense
- 8:14Speaker 2: and defense, he prefers there are somewhere around their college
- 8:20Speaker 2: senior weight, as he calls it. And for a lot
- 8:23Speaker 2: of guys that's hard. I mean, you come to the
- 8:25Speaker 2: NFL and you get in their strength programs and sometimes
- 8:29Speaker 2: guys just get bigger. But he really is one coach
- 8:34Speaker 2: more than most, who really prefers his skill position guys
- 8:38Speaker 2: to remain as close to their college weight as possible.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Jamonte Lake too twelve at the combine the year he
- 8:47Speaker 2: came into the draft, and I don't think he's down
- 8:50Speaker 2: to that, but he is. He is slimmed down from
- 8:53Speaker 2: last season.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Do you anticipate the Burton kid, He's a lot to
- 8:59Speaker 4: make the team right the fullback. There's no no competition there,
- 9:02Speaker 4: It's his job. Is there anybody else that can actually
- 9:05Speaker 4: compete against him?
- 9:07Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you know Nate Atkins, the tight end
- 9:10Speaker 2: who made the team as an undrafted last year. I mean,
- 9:14Speaker 2: he's he's played in that role when Burton isn't on
- 9:17Speaker 2: the field, so he's really the only other guy that
- 9:20Speaker 2: would get significant reps there. And Burton plays so many
- 9:25Speaker 2: things on special teams and has such a history with
- 9:30Speaker 2: Sean Payton. It's really hard for me to believe he
- 9:33Speaker 2: is not on the fifty three in some fashion.
- 9:36Speaker 4: Speaking of special teams, have you seen with your own
- 9:38Speaker 4: eyes the Broncos attempt any kickoff packages?
- 9:43Speaker 1: Like?
- 9:43Speaker 3: How will they approach the kickoff return?
- 9:46Speaker 1: Like?
- 9:46Speaker 4: I know Mims is going to be back there, but
- 9:49Speaker 4: I haven't seen them actually work that out yet.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean they had one day in the offseason
- 9:54Speaker 2: program we saw them work on it. You got to
- 9:57Speaker 2: have two returners. So that's I think most teams I
- 10:01Speaker 2: know are trying to decide, what, you know, how do
- 10:05Speaker 2: those players look? Do you have a fast guy? Do
- 10:07Speaker 2: you have a bigger guy? I mean, do you sort
- 10:09Speaker 2: of have one of each? Uh? But you gotta have
- 10:13Speaker 2: two returners in the in the return zone, and those
- 10:18Speaker 2: guys gotta be almost like shortstops in baseball. They got
- 10:22Speaker 2: to be able to play the ball however it comes
- 10:25Speaker 2: in if somebody rockets a line driving there, or bounces
- 10:28Speaker 2: it in or you know, the pop up whatever. I
- 10:31Speaker 2: think there's really gonna be a premium on having two
- 10:34Speaker 2: returners who can handle the ball with the reliability of
- 10:39Speaker 2: a punt returner.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Maybe if I I guess, maybe I haven't put him
- 10:43Speaker 1: enough emphasis on that new change. There's gonna be some Uh,
- 10:47Speaker 1: you're you're getting me thinking that we're gonna start seeing
- 10:50Speaker 1: some funky dunkys. Are gonna design specific kickoffs in order
- 10:54Speaker 1: to to try to make it happen. I don't know,
- 10:57Speaker 1: I guess I'm I'm I'm curious as to what it's.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Gonna look like.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Yeah. I talked to a special teams coach the other
- 11:03Speaker 2: day and He said he was trying to decide how
- 11:06Speaker 2: much do I practice it in preseason games and how
- 11:10Speaker 2: much do I hold back?
- 11:11Speaker 3: You know, think we're gonna want to show your whole
- 11:13Speaker 3: hand early on, right.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Or maybe you get a cheap, you know, scoring play
- 11:18Speaker 2: early in the season because people people don't know when
- 11:21Speaker 2: it is possible, you know, or what all the options are.
- 11:24Speaker 2: So maybe you get lucky and you pop something you
- 11:28Speaker 2: know somebody hadn't thought of already, and you get achieved
- 11:32Speaker 2: couple early touchdowns earlier in the season.
- 11:34Speaker 1: My last thing for you for me, Jeff, why do
- 11:36Speaker 1: we always talk about the offense? We never talked about
- 11:40Speaker 1: the defense whatsoever ever? And listen, be I don't know
- 11:43Speaker 1: what they're going to look like this year, but they
- 11:45Speaker 1: weren't great last year. Overall, they got better as the
- 11:48Speaker 1: season went on. But you know, you got to you
- 11:50Speaker 1: gotta throw the Miami game in there, because it counted.
- 11:53Speaker 1: It's a seventy point game and they absolutely destroyed you.
- 11:56Speaker 1: But when when do we talk about the defense? You
- 11:58Speaker 1: tell me when it's the appropriate time.
- 12:01Speaker 2: For me, it's always appropriate. People tell me I spend
- 12:04Speaker 2: way too much time talking about defense these days. But
- 12:08Speaker 2: they had the weirdest year ever last year. I mean,
- 12:10Speaker 2: they had the Miami game, you give up seventy and
- 12:14Speaker 2: you know, a billion yards, and then you have an
- 12:17Speaker 2: eight week not two weeks or three weeks, but eight
- 12:21Speaker 2: weeks where you're the top scoring defense in the in
- 12:24Speaker 2: the NFL over an eight week span. I don't know
- 12:28Speaker 2: I've ever seen anything like that before, but I think,
- 12:32Speaker 2: you know, if it was one or two weeks, you
- 12:34Speaker 2: can kind of call it fluky. But they did play
- 12:37Speaker 2: well enough to give up sixteen points a game over
- 12:41Speaker 2: an eight week span. You know, in the Ravens. The
- 12:45Speaker 2: Ravens led the league in scoring defense at sixteen point
- 12:48Speaker 2: five last year. So if you're in that sixteen to
- 12:51Speaker 2: seventeen point range, you're playing about as good as defenses
- 12:55Speaker 2: can play these days. And they showed they could do
- 12:59Speaker 2: that over a two month span. So it really is
- 13:03Speaker 2: a matter of what are you going to get, you know,
- 13:06Speaker 2: are you getting that early season struggle or you're getting
- 13:10Speaker 2: that eight week run. But I think replacing Justin Simmons
- 13:15Speaker 2: is going to be a lot bigger deal than they
- 13:17Speaker 2: seem to want to to think it is. And you know,
- 13:21Speaker 2: until I see how they play it safety, I really
- 13:25Speaker 2: can't say how that's going to go. I mean, they're
- 13:27Speaker 2: asking Brandon Jones to play a lot differently than he's
- 13:30Speaker 2: ever played in his career. So I think he can
- 13:34Speaker 2: do it. But until we see him do it, you know,
- 13:37Speaker 2: we're not sure yet.
- 13:38Speaker 4: And you can make the argument, I guess justin Simmons
- 13:40Speaker 4: departure is the penance you have to pay for Russell
- 13:43Speaker 4: Wilson's contract, and that's those are the things that you
- 13:46Speaker 4: lack now. You lack those veterans back there that normally
- 13:49Speaker 4: make you a well rounded defense. Hey, Leggie, will see
- 13:52Speaker 4: you this afternoon or this morning in practice. One last item,
- 13:56Speaker 4: the international man of mystery, Greg Dulcic, who was out
- 13:59Speaker 4: there running yesterday. Does he look like he's in.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Tip top shape?
- 14:05Speaker 4: Is he back to where he was as a rookie?
- 14:07Speaker 3: What do you notice?
- 14:09Speaker 2: So he looks, you know again, as he always does
- 14:12Speaker 2: when he's coming back. He looks very good. And he
- 14:15Speaker 2: is such a key player in this offense because they
- 14:19Speaker 2: don't have anyone else like him. And if you're going
- 14:24Speaker 2: to attack nickel defenses in this league right now, every
- 14:29Speaker 2: good or great offense has that player at tight end.
- 14:34Speaker 2: And if he isn't ready to go. The Broncos don't
- 14:37Speaker 2: have that player at tight.
- 14:39Speaker 3: End, all right, I'll be out there looking for the bubble.
- 14:43Speaker 2: You know, you'd have to pay attention if you're going
- 14:47Speaker 2: to stand next to me, So that's part.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Of the deal and not talking. Yeah, good, good luck
- 14:51Speaker 1: with him. We'll see you here this morning. You have
- 14:55Speaker 1: fun walking inside the gate there, dove.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Anybody you can't.
- 14:59Speaker 2: You can't just stand around moors telling me about your
- 15:01Speaker 2: aches and pains and life travailed.
- 15:05Speaker 3: That sounds good, buddy, I'll see you. Then it's Jeff Lagel.
- 15:08Speaker 3: I'll see you, buddy.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Espn our Broncos insider on the Ramos Law hotline.
- 15:12Speaker 3: It's Moche Lombardi and Caine cater gone at a wedding.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Caterer called me rest in Peace.
- 15:20Speaker 1: The late Great Red Caine stick around out to ninety five.
