- 0:00Hey, it's Marquita, and welcome back to Living Deeply Podcast.
- 0:04Today, I want to talk about something that sits underneath almost everything
- 0:08I do, and that's why I'm a coach.
- 0:11Because for me, coaching was never about starting a business.
- 0:14It wasn't about adding another title behind my name, and it definitely wasn't
- 0:19because I believe I have everybody's life figured out.
- 0:23I coach because I know what it feels like to be a woman who looks capable on
- 0:27the outside while quietly trying to figure out what the hell she's supposed to do next.
- 0:33I know what it feels like to be accomplished and still question yourself,
- 0:38to be educated but still need guidance, to be strong but still need support,
- 0:44to be the person everybody comes to while wondering who you can go to.
- 0:48And somewhere along the way, I realized that so many women are living the same experience.
- 0:54I know what it feels like to have to figure things out all on your own.
- 0:58I spent years building myself professionally, personally. I earned degrees and certifications.
- 1:05I built a career in human resources. I became a mother.
- 1:09I became a business owner. I became a coach, podcast host, officiant,
- 1:14and so many other things.
- 1:16But none of those titles made me immune to life.
- 1:20I still had to navigate relationships, motherhood, career decisions,
- 1:25boundaries, identity, grief, starting over, figuring out who I am when that
- 1:31old version of my life no longer fit me.
- 1:34I've had moments when I knew something needed to change but didn't know exactly
- 1:38what that change was supposed to look like.
- 1:41And sometimes what I needed wasn't someone to tell me what to do.
- 1:45I needed someone who could sit with me while I figured out what I already knew.
- 1:50And that's part of the reason why I coach.
- 1:53I don't coach women to become me, and that distinction really matters.
- 1:57My job as a coach isn't to create a bunch of women who think like me,
- 2:03live like me, or make decisions that I would make.
- 2:06I am not interested in that at all. I want women to trust themselves.
- 2:11Sometimes I'll challenge you, but sometimes I'll ask a question you weren't expecting.
- 2:16Sometimes I'll help you look at something from a completely different perspective,
- 2:21and sometimes I'm simply going to remind you of something you already knew but
- 2:25haven't given yourself permission to accept yet.
- 2:28Because good coaching isn't about dependency. It's about helping you develop
- 2:33clarity, confidence, strategy, and self-trust so you eventually don't need somebody
- 2:38else to validate your every decision.
- 2:40I coach women because women are often taught to abandon themselves.
- 2:45A lot of us were taught to be accommodating before we were taught to have boundaries.
- 2:50We learned how to keep the peace before we learned how to protect our own peace.
- 2:55We learned how to be good mothers, good wives, good partners,
- 2:59good employees, good leaders, good daughters, and good friends.
- 3:03But nobody stopped to ask, are you good?
- 3:07What do you want? What makes you feel alive? What kind of life actually feels like yours?
- 3:14And those questions become especially important when you reach a point in life,
- 3:19where the things that you used to have define you are no longer you anymore.
- 3:26That's where a lot of my coaching lives in that space. This is the life I've
- 3:30built versus this is the life I actually want.
- 3:35My HR background shapes how I coach. I did spend years in human resources and
- 3:42that experience changed the way I understand people, organizations,
- 3:45careers, conflict, leadership, and workplace systems.
- 3:49I've watched incredibly capable people underestimate themselves.
- 3:54I've watched employees struggle because they didn't understand what was happening around them.
- 3:59And I have watched women shrink themselves professionally because they weren't sure they were ready.
- 4:06I've seen what happens when people don't understand their options.
- 4:09I've seen how powerful it can be when someone finally does.
- 4:14And that's why part of my coaching focuses on careers, leadership,
- 4:19workplace strategy, and helping women navigate professional decisions with more clarity.
- 4:26I'm not an attorney and my coaching is not legal representation,
- 4:30but I can help someone slow the situation down, understand what they're dealing
- 4:36with, organize their thoughts, identify questions they need to ask,
- 4:41and decide what their next move should be.
- 4:44Sometimes clarity changes everything.
- 4:47I coach LGBTQ plus women because our stories deserve space.
- 4:53There are parts of my own identity and life experience that taught me how complicated
- 4:58it can be to discover who you really are after you've already built a life around
- 5:03who you thought you were supposed to be.
- 5:05There is something incredibly powerful about choosing yourself, finally.
- 5:10But choosing yourself can also be terrifying because when you do that,
- 5:15sometimes it means disappointing people, changing relationships,
- 5:20questioning beliefs, creating boundaries,
- 5:23or walking away from a version of yourself that wants to keep you safe.
- 5:28And that's why creating an affirming space for LGBTQ plus women matters so deeply to me.
- 5:34I want women to have somewhere they don't have to explain or defend who they
- 5:39are before they can start talking about what they actually need.
- 5:44I coach women in business because having a good idea is not enough.
- 5:49I've also learned firsthand how difficult entrepreneurship can be.
- 5:53You can be incredibly talented and still struggle to get clients.
- 5:57You can have a beautiful website that nobody visits. You can create content
- 6:01every day and still wonder why it's not converting.
- 6:05You can spend money on advertising and discover very quickly that spending money
- 6:09doesn't automatically create customers.
- 6:12Business requires experimentation, strategy, systems, messaging,
- 6:18automation, and patience.
- 6:20Sometimes somebody outside of your business can look at what you're doing and
- 6:26say, here's where the disconnect might be.
- 6:29That's another reason why I coach. I don't want women thinking they're failures
- 6:33simply because something they tried didn't work, sometimes you don't need to quit.
- 6:38You just need better information.
- 6:41My coaching has changed because I have changed. I think that's important to acknowledge too.
- 6:47I'm not the same woman I was when I first became a coach. Life humbled me.
- 6:52Life stretched me. Life forced me to reconsider things I once believed.
- 6:56I've learned more about boundaries. I've learned more about grief.
- 7:01I've learned more about emotional sensitivity, relationships, businesses, myself.
- 7:07And I think, I don't think growth makes me less credible as a coach.
- 7:12I think it makes me more human.
- 7:15I don't coach from a pedestal. I'm living my life right alongside everybody else.
- 7:21I'm still learning. I'm still changing, healing, and still figuring some things out.
- 7:26The difference is that I've developed tools, education, experience,
- 7:31and perspective that allow me to help another woman navigate their own process.
- 7:36I believe you can both be strong and supported. That's one of the biggest things
- 7:42that I've had to learn is that independence and isolation are not the same thing.
- 7:47You can be incredibly capable and still deserve support.
- 7:51You can know a lot and still need someone to help you think.
- 7:54You can be the leader and still need guidance.
- 7:58You can be the mother and still need care.
- 8:02You can be the person everybody depends on and still say, I need somebody in my corner too.
- 8:08That's not weakness. That's being
- 8:10human. And that's the kind of coaching relationship I want to create.
- 8:14Not someone above you, someone who is beside you, someone who can help you think
- 8:19more clearly while you decide what comes next.
- 8:23Why do I keep coaching? I coach because I love the moment when something clicks for someone.
- 8:31When the confusion starts becoming clarity, when the woman realizes,
- 8:35wait, I actually do have options.
- 8:39When she recognizes that the boundary she's afraid to set is allowed,
- 8:43when she realizes that she doesn't have to keep living according to the expectations
- 8:48that she no longer believes in, when she stops asking, what am I supposed to do?
- 8:54And start asking, what do I actually want? that shift matters to me because
- 9:01I've experienced it myself.
- 9:02I know how much your life can change when you finally start listening to yourself.
- 9:08You don't need me to have all the answers and that's probably the most important
- 9:13thing I want people to understand about my coaching.
- 9:15I'm not selling perfection. I am not selling a magical formula.
- 9:20I'm not promising that one conversation will fix your life.
- 9:24I'm offering space, strategy, perspective, accountability, questions,
- 9:31encouragement, and sometimes a very loving challenge when you're standing in
- 9:36your own way because ultimately,
- 9:39this isn't about building my version of your life. It's about helping you build yours.
- 9:45So when someone asks me why I coach, that's my answer. I coach because I've
- 9:51lived enough life to understand that strong women need support too.
- 9:55I coach because I've experienced what it feels like to reinvent yourself.
- 10:00I coach because women deserve spaces where they can't think out loud without
- 10:05being judged. And I coach because LGBTQ plus women deserve affirming support.
- 10:13I coach because women navigating careers, leadership, business,
- 10:17relationships, boundaries, identity, and major life transitions shouldn't always
- 10:23have to figure everything out alone.
- 10:26I coach because sometimes one conversation can help you see something you've
- 10:32been too close to see for yourself.
