- 0:08Welcome to another exciting episode of Two Shot Tuesday.
- 0:11Not just any episode. We've got the movie guy, Rob
- 0:15Pete's back with us, and as always, Barry T Nixon.
- 0:19How are you doing, gentlemen? Groovy.
- 0:21I mean groovy man. Did you say Groovy as well
- 0:24Barry, or something from a different timeline?
- 0:27I did not say groovy. Rad radical from the 90s?
- 0:30Sure. Yeah, banging.
- 0:31It's banging. Everything banging.
- 0:33We're banging, That's what we're doing.
- 0:35We're banging, and the reason we're banging is because you are
- 0:38both here. Whenever we see the movie guy,
- 0:40we know something important and exciting is about to happen.
- 0:42We're going to get a movie review.
- 0:45Barry, why don't you kick us off by telling us what we're going
- 0:48to be talking about in this episode?
- 0:51All right, Jay, well, we are going to be discussing PT
- 0:53Anderson's latest movie, 1 Battle After Another.
- 0:55But before we do that, we're going to shoehorn in two quick
- 0:59concert reviews. Just super quick 30 seconds, but
- 1:02let's have our first shot get settled in and then we're going
- 1:06to we're going to launch into this super quick couple of
- 1:10concerts. Just a movie.
- 1:13Yeah. Really, it's perfect.
- 1:14Just. So quick, yeah, yeah, we're
- 1:16going to do this so. Quick, however you like to do
- 1:18it, let's start us off. Rob, we're going to start with
- 1:21you this time. What are you doing as shot #1?
- 1:24Well, you know what, I usually go nuts and go crazy with
- 1:27something insane. I'm just, I'm just drinking a
- 1:29can of sparkling water today. It's it's PC brand ginger ale
- 1:34flavored water. It's great.
- 1:35Ginger ale flavored. Water.
- 1:37It just tastes. It tastes like the essence of
- 1:39ginger ale. That's all you need.
- 1:40No sugar. No sugar.
- 1:43Wow, just water. All right, Barry, what have you
- 1:45got? Nothing but sugar over here.
- 1:48It's more of the Bushmills 12 year.
- 1:50Oh my God, Jay, I can't wait for you to try it.
- 1:53I can't wait to try it either. For right now, I'm going to make
- 1:55do with one of my favorites. It's the Jameson Black Barrel.
- 2:00Beautiful. Cheers gentlemen.
- 2:02Cheers, Chin. Chin.
- 2:05Let's shoehorn in a couple of concert reviews, starting with
- 2:07Last week. Rob and I went and saw the band
- 2:10Pulp. You may be familiar with them.
- 2:12They were popular. They kind of hit their apex of
- 2:14popularity in the 90s. They're back with a new album
- 2:17after 12:00-ish years. Great new album.
- 2:21Very good. And Rob, this was the first time
- 2:23you had seen them. We went to Bud stage basically a
- 2:26week ago from the time of this recording, yeah.
- 2:30What was your thoughts? Wait, wait, wait.
- 2:32I want to hear reluctantly, bud. Stage.
- 2:34That's that's the first. I hate bud stage.
- 2:36It's just an echo Chamber of metal.
- 2:38It's just metal. It's just all metal and
- 2:41concrete. So everything bounces around.
- 2:42However, if there's a good band there, I, I, I've let it go and
- 2:46I've just gone and, and I've seen it and I've allowed the
- 2:49echo to, to permeate my existence.
- 2:51I'm not sure you've let. It go, I'm sorry because you
- 2:53brought it up yet again. Every single time you and I talk
- 2:57about Bud stage, you have to get that in.
- 2:58There. I hate it.
- 2:59I hate it. I hate it.
- 3:01Barry told me they're renovating the place so that.
- 3:03That's good news, I guess. Yeah.
- 3:05No more metal, Rob. Really.
- 3:06But anyway, this is all wood. It's going to be all, yeah, all
- 3:09wood and. And good feelings, I guess.
- 3:12I don't know. But what?
- 3:13Gets you wood. I will say yes, that's right.
- 3:16Well, we are banging so. Banging.
- 3:19Speaking of banging that that show was was banging.
- 3:21It was great. It was amazing.
- 3:22It was it was great to see them and they they delivered a an
- 3:25awesome show. Barry, I guess you feel the same
- 3:27way, obviously. I feel the same way.
- 3:30We would be remiss to not mention the opener he won.
- 3:33Hamilton, Leith Hauser, fantastic artist Rob.
- 3:37I mean, you said he sounded like Charlie Kelly from Always Sunny
- 3:41in Philadelphia up there. And maybe some of that could
- 3:44have been true. He does hit some rather high and
- 3:47sometimes awkward notes, but. Scratchy.
- 3:49Yeah, Yeah. He was great though, fantastic.
- 3:52The whole, the whole experience was amazing.
- 3:54Now let's skip ahead to last night at the time.
- 3:56I'll get into, I'll get into this, so I'm going to do this.
- 3:58So this was. Your brainchild.
- 4:00This is my deal. So I came out this is very
- 4:02quick. I found a a band on BB CS
- 4:04YouTube channel. I always watch the Glastonbury
- 4:06stuff every year to see kind of what new stuff is bubbling up in
- 4:09the rock world. And I came across a band called
- 4:11Fat Dog and I got into them around June, July, somewhere in
- 4:15there. I really got into them.
- 4:16I, I think they're great. They only have one album.
- 4:17They're like a COVID band. They're, you know, a bunch of
- 4:20young folks that kind of came out of COVID with a new band.
- 4:22It's great stuff. And they were coming to Toronto.
- 4:24So I'm like, I got to go see that.
- 4:25I bought myself a ticket. I don't know anyone else that
- 4:27knows this band, but I reached out to Barry and asked him and
- 4:29he was like, I don't think so. It's a, it's a workout night.
- 4:32I'm not sure if I can do that, but I I let him know again and
- 4:35he was like, you know what, fuck it, let's go.
- 4:37That sounds like Barry. That right there sounds like
- 4:39Barry. The first one did not sound like
- 4:40Barry. That sounded more like me.
- 4:42But the second one was definitely Barry, I like to say.
- 4:45Yes to things. The only hitch was the Monday
- 4:47training, but that's OK. You know what?
- 4:50I went to a concert and I didn't drink alcohol for the first time
- 4:52in probably my entire life. So thanks for that new
- 4:55experience, Rob. That was fun.
- 4:56Yeah, it. Was fun, it was fun.
- 4:57So this is how the Garrison at at Ossington and and and Dundas.
- 5:02How's the metal to band ratio? Was there a lot of metal?
- 5:06There was. There no good.
- 5:09Enough wood there to keep you. It's a it's a small venue.
- 5:11My, my, my band's actually played there plastic a couple
- 5:14times. So it was interesting to see an
- 5:17up and coming band like these are.
- 5:18These guys are pretty popular in in London, right, in England and
- 5:22in bits of Europe as well. So it was kind of cool to see
- 5:25them playing a small venue in a place where I've played before.
- 5:27So that was kind of cool. And their name again.
- 5:30Fat dog and they they're kind of no, just a fat dog.
- 5:34Yeah, spelt as as you would imagine D with a kind of a mix
- 5:37of fat dog. Yeah, yeah, they they're kind of
- 5:41a mix of sort of post punk and techno and and just all over the
- 5:45play. They're just an interesting mix
- 5:46of stuff. And I think Barry liked it, but
- 5:48I'm not sure if it was necessarily Barry's kind of
- 5:51thing. But I really appreciate him
- 5:52coming along. And yeah, what do you think?
- 5:53In the end? I think he was maybe won over
- 5:55slightly by them so. Totally.
- 5:56I was. The energy was insane.
- 5:58I had not seen a more raucous club show than when I saw
- 6:02Fiddler at the Horseshoe. This was before they became a
- 6:05famous band. I mean, the kids were going
- 6:07insane. Insane.
- 6:10And it was great to see it was, yeah, it was really, really a
- 6:13lot. Of people a lot of people
- 6:14singing singing along this is a new band they just released an
- 6:17album late last year so everyone seemed to know the lyrics it was
- 6:19it was amazing I. Have to ask this question before
- 6:22we leave it for Barry on either of the two shows, merch or no
- 6:26merch. Both were no merch Jay.
- 6:30Really. Yeah.
- 6:31OK, Broad. Yeah.
- 6:33I would typically be a merch guy.
- 6:34I might have bought a pulp shirt.
- 6:36I definitely would have bought a fat dog shirt, but they were
- 6:39didn't really need a pulp shirt and I would have more likely
- 6:41bought a fat dog shirt. But they were 50 bucks for a
- 6:44small band. Yeah, it just if it was 30 bucks
- 6:46I probably would have bit you know what I mean.
- 6:48But it was 50 was a little high for a a club band basically.
- 6:52OK, All right. Well, that's that's pretty
- 6:54exciting. So check it out.
- 6:55Pulp. We've all heard of fat dog.
- 6:58Maybe I'm going to I'm going to put a little fat dog on my
- 7:00Spotify. And yeah.
- 7:02They're on there. You guys were.
- 7:03Listening to. That's the album's called Woof
- 7:06BOOF. Yeah, they're.
- 7:08Sticking with it, it's a. Theme I.
- 7:10See what's going on? OK, we're going to do shot #2
- 7:13and that's going to help launch us into the movie segment, which
- 7:17because we've got the movie guy here.
- 7:18You've never been the concert guy, but it's exciting that
- 7:20you're also the concert guy tonight.
- 7:23Yeah. That's a guy movie.
- 7:23Guy What? Have you got for shot #2 Rob?
- 7:26You just did it same. Stuff.
- 7:27I just had some yeah, I'm so thirsty right now.
- 7:29I could drink 6 gallons of this stuff so I'm going to just keep.
- 7:32Drinking it nice, Barry. I'd say the same thing, 6
- 7:36gallons if I had it of the 12 year Bushmills.
- 7:39He's got to bear with you. Got to make up for last night,
- 7:41you know what I mean? Big time.
- 7:42Yeah, yeah. Cheers.
- 7:44Cheers, Chin. Chin peppery.
- 7:48OK, gentlemen, take us into PT Anderson's latest offering and
- 7:54his first since when? I would like you to help me with
- 7:58that. I.
- 7:58Think the last one he did was called licorice pizza and I
- 8:01believe that came in like 20 or 21.
- 8:04I missed that, yeah. Around COVID.
- 8:06Yeah, I think so, which I did not see.
- 8:09That's the one of his 10 movies that I've not seen.
- 8:12But let let's start first of all with The performances in this
- 8:16movie are insane. Extremely believable.
- 8:19The movie is 1 battle after another, yes OK.
- 8:22Yeah. Thank you.
- 8:22We did. Mention that one battle after
- 8:24another two hours and 50 minutes, which, Jay, I know that
- 8:27makes you a little gun shy. Rob, how did you feel about the
- 8:30runtime? Because I felt like it kind of
- 8:31flew by. Yeah, it was one of those movies
- 8:33when you reach the two plus hour mark is I'm always afraid of
- 8:37having to go take a whiz right around the time where you need
- 8:39to watch the movie, right. So.
- 8:41And that actually did happen. So I just had to hold it.
- 8:45And it's one of those things where, well, I, I think it just
- 8:47always is what it is, you know, but that that always kind of
- 8:49bugs me with those movies. But this one was was it was
- 8:52evenly paced. It was beautifully put together.
- 8:54It was a fairly action filled funny romp mixed with some
- 8:58serious drama. But it was, it was a bit of a
- 9:00comedy as well, had some funny moments and that.
- 9:03Surprised me actually, Rob. Like there was quite a lot of
- 9:05humor. Way more than what the trailer
- 9:07would have you believe. The trailer makes it look like
- 9:09it's one battle after another, just like a slog of battles and
- 9:14then another one. And that does happen.
- 9:15But interspersed with all that craziness, there's actually some
- 9:19pretty funny moments. And Rob, you said it in the
- 9:22theater and this was spot on. Leonardo Dicaprio's character is
- 9:25kind of like the Dude from The Big Lebowski a little.
- 9:28He kind of. He kind of becomes that he
- 9:30starts out as a, you know, the the movie is basically the plot
- 9:33is basically like this, this group of vigilante type folks
- 9:37kind of taken from what I would say the late 60s, maybe late 70s
- 9:41kind of era of people. But it's kind of transported
- 9:44into the 90s or something younger folks that are kind of
- 9:46fighting the system and they're they're kind of doing crazy
- 9:49things. I think it's based on on a
- 9:51pension book kind of loosely based on that, which kind of
- 9:55told this a similar story, I guess.
- 9:57And, and I think this is that was based on an actual group of
- 9:59people that actually did blow up a building that that it just and
- 10:04it was just a complete failure. Everything was a failure, right?
- 10:06So this is kind of what happens here.
- 10:08This small group of of folks in the beginning kind of do these
- 10:12things that are kind of releasing border crosser
- 10:14crossing people and, and people that are stuck in camps on the
- 10:17on the border, you know, robbing banks for the greater cause or
- 10:20just things like that. And it just kind of all goes to
- 10:23shit. And then the rest of the movie
- 10:24is is 15 years later. And and so it's Leonardo
- 10:29DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall.
- 10:32Or was it Regina Hall? I think and I don't know the
- 10:36other names of the other actors and some newer actors.
- 10:38Is the thrust of it the search for his daughter?
- 10:40That's what I picked up. That's right.
- 10:42Yeah, on the trailer, the. Is that the thrust of it in the
- 10:44movie? Is that the the through lines of
- 10:45the movie? Basically Sean Penn, I think
- 10:47what it is is PTA had this idea. Paul Thomas Anderson had this
- 10:50idea of there would be this bounty hunter that would be kind
- 10:53of searching for this guy years down the road kind of thing.
- 10:57And I think that kind of more he he apparently been writing this
- 10:59movie for for 20 plus years. Like this is something that he's
- 11:01been wanting to do for a long time.
- 11:03And it started with a bounty hunter, but now it ends up being
- 11:06sort of a Sean Penn character is more of like a general guy.
- 11:09That's right. Who gets it, who was involved
- 11:11from the beginning with some of those, some of the early years
- 11:14of that that group. And he kind of obsesses over it
- 11:16for reasons which I won't get into, which become more apparent
- 11:19near the end. And his character is hilarious,
- 11:22like he he's a complete disaster.
- 11:23This guy just a obsessive, fucked up, mentally disturbed
- 11:28individual that's got power, right.
- 11:31So it's it's interesting to, and he's a, he's a great actor, so
- 11:33he's fun to watch doing that. And he's not just some like
- 11:37rogue soldier like this guy's a general.
- 11:39Like he is with real. Power in the in the US Army.
- 11:43And so he just he uses that obviously in the most
- 11:46inappropriate ways. And Sean Penn, like you said,
- 11:48amazing performance. I mean, I'd be very surprised if
- 11:51he's doesn't get at least a like a best supporting actor.
- 11:53And there's a part at the end where he suffers A grotesque
- 11:56injury and the makeup involved in the aftermath is incredible.
- 12:01He does look like this man has had part of his face blown off.
- 12:06It's just like the makeup of today is incredible.
- 12:09It really does make you think that that happened to him.
- 12:12Yeah, it was, it was all around. Well, then I, I the one thing I
- 12:15would like to draw like attention to is at the ending,
- 12:18there's a, I'm not going to give anything away and why this is
- 12:20happening, but I will say there's a bit of a chase that's
- 12:23going on with two cars that ends up being three cars.
- 12:26And they're fairly even. They're they're fairly widely
- 12:28spaced. So it's, it's a high speed
- 12:30chase, but it's not one of those, you know, back-to-back
- 12:33cars that are just zipping down a highway kind of thing.
- 12:35Yeah, and it's in the desert, so it's not a, it's not a city
- 12:38chase. It's like out in like, you know,
- 12:40the Joshua Tree area of California.
- 12:42And basically the the one car, the the car in the front is
- 12:45being chased by the car behind it, but it's actually quite a
- 12:47quite far back. And then the one behind that
- 12:50joins in and it's also pretty far back, but they're speeding
- 12:54quickly. And the camera work here is
- 12:57like, and I mentioned this to Barry while we were watching.
- 12:59He's like, I don't think I've ever seen this before where
- 13:02they've they've they're using actual film stock and it's all
- 13:04the whole thing is IMAX. By the way, the whole thing is
- 13:06full screen IMAX. There is never like shrinking,
- 13:09and it was growing. 70mm is that?
- 13:12What does that mean when they were I?
- 13:14Think it I think it was like I think it was a movie some other
- 13:16some classic film stock. I'm, I'm actually looking at it
- 13:19right now and I can't, can't think of what it's called, but
- 13:23they use some sort of classic film stock to do this.
- 13:25But the, the cameras like zoomed in on the action and it puts you
- 13:31on the front of like one of the cars.
- 13:33So if there's, if there's hills that are fairly gradual when
- 13:36you're when you're in this position and, and the way it's
- 13:39zoomed in, it looks, everything looks mashed together and very
- 13:41two-dimensional. So it the, the hills become
- 13:44almost like roller coaster hills instead of like soft hills and
- 13:49it makes you feel nauseous. It makes it made me feel a
- 13:52little bit like nauseated watching it because it was so.
- 13:56Which is exactly how the character, especially in the
- 13:59front car and maybe how the character in the back, how some
- 14:02of these characters are actually feeling, right?
- 14:04How are you holding up during that part?
- 14:06I was perfectly fine. I enjoyed it.
- 14:08I know what I know what Rob was was saying.
- 14:10You do get a little bit of that feeling in your gut when you're
- 14:13going down on a roller coaster. That little bit of a drop in
- 14:16your stomach. You do get that.
- 14:18I didn't feel nauseated or like I was going to be sick or
- 14:20anything, but I no. I wasn't, it wasn't like that.
- 14:22It was it's just that I think that I did definitely have like,
- 14:25well, that is this is hard, kind of hard to watch.
- 14:27It's a little, it's a little jarring on the eyes because it
- 14:29is so yeah, like nauseating feeling and.
- 14:33That's the mark of a great director, right?
- 14:35He picked this scene. It could have just been a three
- 14:37car chase, but you add that element in and you get this
- 14:41visceral feeling from from your audience, which is.
- 14:43Yeah. Exactly.
- 14:45Yeah, No, it was it was a it was a great movie, it.
- 14:47Was great. And Benicio Del Toro adds a
- 14:49really nice support role as like a sensei.
- 14:52He was like teaching a one of the characters karate and he has
- 14:55a very strict code of conduct. It's really great.
- 14:58And he's kind of involved in trying to help some of these
- 15:00migrants who have crossed the border illegally.
- 15:03He's he's sheltering them and trying to give them a path
- 15:06forward. And it's he's great as always.
- 15:09He's I mean, he's just one of the best.
- 15:11Well, he's hilarious. And there's a.
- 15:12Crazy scene in the Dojo where like Leonardo Dicaprio's
- 15:16character is simply trying to charge his flip phone and he
- 15:19can't. He's so manic and nuts.
- 15:22He's falling all over the place. Like he's hitting the deck.
- 15:24Anytime a car goes by the outside of the window, it's I
- 15:27remember Rob, you were laughing your ass off.
- 15:29It was just like that. This character is just so out
- 15:32there. He is just like total tinfoil
- 15:34hat. Everyone's out to get me.
- 15:36But in this case, he's not. And.
- 15:37They are. They actually are.
- 15:39Yeah, they actually are. To get him, he was actually
- 15:42pretty sharp 15 years before that, but he's now had 15 years
- 15:45behind him and and a lot of drugs and booze and all that
- 15:48stuff. Yeah, and he can't.
- 15:50Remember certain passwords to get back in touch with the
- 15:54original gang that he was with these group of revolutionaries
- 15:58that he's trying to reconnect with to find out potentially
- 16:00where he he could hook up with his daughter.
- 16:02Again, not going to say anything more than that, but it is like
- 16:06basically it's, you know, this is the mission.
- 16:11He's trying to get back to his daughter.
- 16:13All right, I'm going to. Ask you for your star rating and
- 16:15then one other question I have for you.
- 16:17But before I do you mention flip phone Berry.
- 16:19So is this set present day or is there like 90s?
- 16:22Kind of. No, it's definitely.
- 16:23Set in present day. But this guy, this character is
- 16:27someone who wants to be off the grid.
- 16:29It's actually. The entire group, so the entire
- 16:31group has kind of put these pieces of equipment together
- 16:34that are old school equipment that have remained old school
- 16:38equipment for the last 15 years. So they're harder to trace and,
- 16:41and, and all that stuff. Right, All right, he can't.
- 16:43He can't be. On he can't be on a regular
- 16:45iPhone or anything. He'll get traced right away.
- 16:48Now, I know you're both Paul Thomas Anderson fan, so I'm
- 16:51going to ask you individually for your star rating.
- 16:53And then where does this rank in your Paul Thomas Anderson movie
- 16:58collection of the ones you've seen?
- 17:00So why don't we start with you, Rob, star rating?
- 17:03And where does this rank in your PTA?
- 17:06Yeah, I would give it, you know, out of out of five, I'd I'd give
- 17:10it a solid. It's a four.
- 17:11It's a great, it's a great movie.
- 17:13It's probably, probably it is. You know, I think I'd prefer
- 17:17I'll never not love Magnolia. To me, that's one of his best
- 17:19films. And There Will Be Blood is just
- 17:21such an epic thing. It's just difficult to compare
- 17:24that to anything probably the third or fourth down.
- 17:27I mean, the book is great as well.
- 17:29Yeah. Where would you put it?
- 17:30Maybe, maybe in a similar place. It's just the Boogie Nights was
- 17:32such a, an original thing that came at a time that other things
- 17:36were happening. It's kind of hard to put that
- 17:39anywhere below the current movie, you know what I mean?
- 17:43Because it's such a classic. So I, I would say it's probably
- 17:46the 4th, my fourth favorite at this point, so.
- 17:48Four out of five stars, fourth favorite Berry.
- 17:50Where does it fall on your star rating?
- 17:5212 out of five and yeah range. No, I.
- 17:54Mean I I did enjoy it, it was fantastic.
- 17:57But I think I'm with Rob on this one.
- 17:58I think it's a four. Maybe it's going to lose a
- 18:00little bit. I'm not even going to complain
- 18:03about the runtime because I didn't feel the runtime, but I
- 18:05suspect I would feel it the second time through.
- 18:08You know what I mean? Like the first time you're it's
- 18:10all like new and woo, but the second time you might feel that
- 18:13runtime. So 4 out of five performances
- 18:15are amazing. Where does it sit for me?
- 18:18There Will Be Blood is my favorite of the PT Anderson
- 18:21films. And then Boogie Nights would be
- 18:22#2 I would probably slide this one.
- 18:26It's probably tied with Magnolia.
- 18:27I agree, Magnolia is fantastic. It's probably, it's a two way
- 18:30tie for third for me. OK, nice.
- 18:33Well, Barry, if I can make a recommendation the second time
- 18:36through, I recommend it. Be in the comfort of your own
- 18:39home, Watch it my way with many breaks in between, possibly
- 18:42spread over a couple of days to see that is.
- 18:45The move, Yeah, that's the Jason Riley preferred.
- 18:47Hey. We are at TIME and I want to
- 18:50thank you, Rob the Movie Guy for joining us again for another
- 18:54exciting breakdown of this movie.
- 18:56I haven't seen it yet. Unlike the last few, this one I
- 18:59have not seen. So will I go to the theater?
- 19:02Probably not, but I will check it out.
- 19:04Yeah, I definitely like Paul Thomas Anderson, so I'll check
- 19:07it out as soon as it's on demand.
- 19:08And yes. So again, thank you for being
- 19:10here as always. Oh and I did want to mention
- 19:12thank you for being the concert guy as well.
- 19:15Pulp fat dog, you're going to want to check that out.
- 19:18Check out watch the amount of physical metal at any of the
- 19:21places that you go see a concert.
- 19:23It can be a deterrent. Wood is better than metal.
- 19:26That's right. I.
- 19:27Think we'll stay with? That very perfectly.
- 19:28Said we'll. See you next week.
- 19:31We'll be. There and we will have our movie
- 19:32guy back for Tron Aries in an upcoming episode.
- 19:36So we got Tron Aries coming in. A couple of weeks, yeah, very
- 19:39good. We'll.
- 19:39See. Yeah.
