- 0:00Hey, welcome back to another episode of Health with Hashimoto's.
- 0:03My name is Esther, and I am happy to welcome you to a very different episode.
- 0:08First, I have an announcement about the summer schedule, and then I'm going
- 0:11to tell you about the book I wrote, which is not about Hashimoto's.
- 0:15So last summer, we did, we meaning you and me, we did summer shorts.
- 0:21I know that schedules change in the summer and podcast listening habits often change as well.
- 0:29So last summer, I tried to do episodes that are about 10 minutes or less,
- 0:33and I heard really good feedback. So I thought we would do that again this summer.
- 0:38And when I was trying to think of what we would do, one of my podcasting friends,
- 0:43she mentioned that she did a wishlist episode.
- 0:47And I was making a wishlist episode, just an outline, figuring out different
- 0:53tools and modalities, things that people would put on a wishlist.
- 0:57Everything from like super cheap, like a couple dollars, to super expensive.
- 1:03Like, you know, a couple thousand dollars.
- 1:05And I thought that would be a really fun series.
- 1:08And then I was like, Oh, I could do that over the summer. So that is what we're
- 1:11going to do over the summer.
- 1:12Every week, I will have an episode about 10 minutes or less is my goal.
- 1:16And we will cover different tools that you might want to invest in or put on
- 1:22your birthday wish list.
- 1:23I don't know if you still make one of those. I do. My husband and my kids like
- 1:27to have a wish list for me.
- 1:29They prefer, you know, easy Amazon wishlist where there's exact links,
- 1:34or I tell them exactly what I want.
- 1:37That's how my family runs. I'm not sure how your family runs,
- 1:40but that's what we're going to do this summer.
- 1:42If you have anything that you want me to cover during this series,
- 1:46hop over to our community, Health with Hashimoto's, over on the school platform.
- 1:51School is skool.com and search for Health with Hashimoto's, or just click the
- 1:57link down in the show notes.
- 1:59And that will take you probably to my link page where I have everything.
- 2:03You know, I talk about different supplements and activators.
- 2:07That's on the link page. I talk about the Fullscript store. It's kind of like
- 2:11the Amazon of good quality supplements.
- 2:14That link is on the link page. My different freebies are on the link page.
- 2:18I've got a lot of different stuff over there. So check out that link and let
- 2:23me know what you want to hear about this summer.
- 2:25So here is what I have outlined so far. I thought maybe we could talk about
- 2:29thyroid lab tests. There's a lot of places that you can get them online.
- 2:33I thought we'd cover that in one episode because I don't know about you,
- 2:37but that was on my wish list for a while.
- 2:39I want to recheck my labs and I want to do all of the things.
- 2:43Maybe grounding sheets.
- 2:45People have asked me about coffee enemas. So I figured, you know,
- 2:49kind of gross, but let's talk about it.
- 2:51We will not be talking about red light therapy because that's going to be an
- 2:55interview that I do in the fall, and that will need more than 10 minutes.
- 3:00But early morning sunlight exposure, a guided prayer and meditation app.
- 3:06Different things like that, I have already scheduled or, you know,
- 3:10written down the idea. I have not recorded and scheduled it yet. It's only mid-May.
- 3:15So let me know over in our Health with Hashimoto's community what you want to
- 3:19hear about in the summer, and I will see how many different things I can work into our schedule.
- 3:25As far as I can count, in June, July, and August, we have 13 Thursdays.
- 3:30So 13 summer short episodes, and I will be calling those the Hashimoto's Health Lab.
- 3:38So watch out for the beginning of June.
- 3:40That will start. All right, let me tell you about the book I wrote.
- 3:44So first, some background.
- 3:46I have four boys, and they are getting older.
- 3:50I told you in a couple episodes ago that I have one graduating this year.
- 3:54But of course, that means for the last two years, I have had a lot of grad parties
- 3:58because my kids have a lot of friends who are graduating.
- 4:02And last year, maybe, oh, early spring, maybe late winter, I posted on Facebook
- 4:10and I said, who has some ideas for graduation gifts?
- 4:15I would like to make the gifts something that's personal and meaningful.
- 4:20I don't want to just give money or towels or something useful.
- 4:24I want to help these graduates grow as a person.
- 4:28And one of my friends said, why don't you write a book? You would be great. I would read the book.
- 4:34I'm like, oh, that's a really cool idea. Let me do that. So I did.
- 4:37I wrote a book last year. Now I published it.
- 4:44And it was fine. But my goal with the book was to price it really low so that
- 4:49people who have a lot of graduation parties can buy multiple.
- 4:53Like, you know, I wanted a small book, very short, because that's what the kids want to read.
- 4:59They don't want a textbook. They don't want something big. They want something
- 5:02super short and easy to read.
- 5:04And I also wanted to keep it really cheap for people who are buying multiples.
- 5:08Well, the platform that I used last year, the shipping ended up to be more than the book.
- 5:13So, and I also discovered, well, not discovered, it re-pointed out to me that
- 5:19I am really bad about delivering things.
- 5:23For some of my customers, if you have ordered through my affiliate link for
- 5:28the LifeVantage ProTandem and Activated Collagen, the MindBody system,
- 5:33I most likely have a card written out for you.
- 5:37I wrote those out in November and they are still sitting in a box because I didn't ever send them.
- 5:44The same thing happened with the book. I had a couple people order and I was like, sure.
- 5:49And I ordered for them so that we could save on shipping.
- 5:52And then delivery was my hang up. There's one person who still doesn't have her books.
- 5:57And do you think that I've forgotten about it? Absolutely not.
- 6:00Do you think that that has like filled me with guilt every single time I think
- 6:04about it, which is probably once a week since last spring? Absolutely.
- 6:10Why don't I just put them in the mail if I haven't met up with her in person?
- 6:15I don't know. That's a great question.
- 6:17And I should probably dig into that because being eaten up with guilt every
- 6:22single week when I think about these books is probably not healthy.
- 6:26Anyway, I rediscovered that I don't do good with delivering things in person.
- 6:32So this year, I moved to Amazon.
- 6:35If you go to Amazon right now and you type in Esther Yunkin in the search E-S-T-H-E-R,
- 6:42there is an H in my name, it is silent,
- 6:45Esther Yunkin, Y-U-N-K-I-N, you will see my brand new to Amazon book.
- 6:51It is called Wellness Wisdom for Graduates, Easy Hacks to Create holistic health after high school.
- 6:59I'm so excited about this book. Let me tell you about it.
- 7:03Like I said earlier, it has nothing to do with Hashimoto's. This is the book
- 7:07that I wanted to write for my kids and for their friends. I wanted to help them
- 7:14create better health, help them to create a.
- 7:19I guess I wanted to help them shortcut the different lessons that we've all
- 7:24had to learn through trial and error and failure.
- 7:29So if I figured I could shortcut that in small, simple chapters, awesome.
- 7:36All right, so the book covers all the five areas of health, the whole person health.
- 7:42So you know the logo on the cover art for this podcast, in my website, everywhere.
- 7:48It's a flower and it has five petals. Those five petals are body,
- 7:53mind, spirit, diet, and environment.
- 7:56So I have a chapter on each of those. And within each of those chapters,
- 8:01I have very quick, doable tips.
- 8:04They are things that are rooted in holistic health, not holistic as in woo woo,
- 8:09but holistic as in everything is related to everything else.
- 8:13You know, when you are in a bad mood, when you got up on the wrong side of the
- 8:17bed, it's going to affect everything.
- 8:19It's going to affect how you eat. It's going to affect your posture.
- 8:22It's going to affect how you relate with others. It might affect your spiritual health even.
- 8:27You know, if you wake up on the
- 8:28wrong side of the bed, are you going to be talking to God more or less?
- 8:32Are you going to be grumpy with your friends and then you feel guilt about that?
- 8:37You know, everything impacts everything. And that's what I mean by holistic.
- 8:41So this book has just very, very short chapters. The entire book is only,
- 8:46I think, 49 pages. So very short.
- 8:48And I try to get enough in there that the teenagers who are receiving this book,
- 8:56they get some really practical tips.
- 9:00So chapter one is spiritual health. And this is your warning that if you do
- 9:06not want to give a book that is biblically based, this is not the book for you.
- 9:12This book starts out with spiritual health because you are an eternal being.
- 9:18Your body will die, your spirit will not, you will get a new body.
- 9:22And if your spiritual health is not good, nothing else matters.
- 9:27So that is why spiritual health is first. And I explain that in the book.
- 9:32I say, it starts out, what is the most important petal of your whole health? It's not your body.
- 9:37Your physical health is very important, but you will get a new body someday.
- 9:41Your spirit is eternal. Your spiritual health determines your destiny after
- 9:45your physical body dies.
- 9:47As Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians, so we fix our eyes not on what is seen,
- 9:52but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
- 9:58In the spirit chapter, I talk about prioritizing the important things.
- 10:05Yes, I talk about Jesus and spiritual health and eternal life,
- 10:09but I also talk about what is calling for your attention, what's calling for
- 10:14your mental energy, and how to sort through there.
- 10:17I love the Eisenhower matrix it
- 10:21is two by two grid and things are
- 10:23categorized between urgent and not urgent in the
- 10:27columns and then in the rows important and not important so I walk the reader
- 10:32through the Eisenhower matrix because I know that the kids going into college
- 10:37or going off into their new jobs launching into adulthood they're going to have
- 10:41a lot of decisions and for me personally,
- 10:44this Eisenhower matrix was very impactful when I first learned about it.
- 10:49When I feel very overwhelmed and I have a to-do list that is,
- 10:52you know, really, really long, I throw it into this Eisenhower matrix and it
- 10:57really helps me prioritize the things that I need to.
- 11:00In the spirit chapter, I also talk about not following your heart.
- 11:05The world, like messages from everywhere are constantly saying, follow your heart.
- 11:11But we know if you have read through Proverbs and Psalms, you know that the heart can be deceitful.
- 11:20So instead of telling the reader, the graduate, to follow your heart,
- 11:25I say, instead of following your heart, follow God's heart.
- 11:28And of course, I say, you know, I give the background, why would you not follow
- 11:33your heart? I talk about how to find a good church.
- 11:36That is the end of the spirit chapter.
- 11:38The mind chapter, I talk about how your thoughts are powerful.
- 11:42Your thoughts shape your emotions and drive your actions.
- 11:45So we talk about mental health. Again, going back to focusing on what is important
- 11:50to talk about what you focus on expands.
- 11:54And then in this mental, in this mind chapter, we talk about exercise.
- 11:59Because there is one thing that is more powerful and more effective than most
- 12:06mental health medications available today, and it is exercise.
- 12:10Researchers have looked at over 1,000 different studies,
- 12:14and they have found that physical activity is one and a half times more effective
- 12:20at reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety than either medication or therapy.
- 12:26So we talk about exercise and staying active in the mind chapter.
- 12:31In the body chapter, I talk about physical health.
- 12:35I talk about breathing, diaphragmatic breathing a lot on this podcast.
- 12:38So I teach the graduates in this book how to use diaphragmatic breathing to bust stress.
- 12:45We talk about rest and staying active. You need both. And then good sleep.
- 12:51And I tie it into better grades. I am assuming that a lot of the students who
- 12:56read this book will be going on to college, but not everybody.
- 13:00I think that this little tiny section is the only time I mention grades.
- 13:05And I mention it because researchers at MIT discovered a 50% drop in grades
- 13:11between students who averaged six and a half hours of sleep per night versus
- 13:16those who averaged seven and a half.
- 13:1850% drop in grades. That's huge. So we do cover sleep in there.
- 13:24Chapter four is all about diet. Now I understand that most, you know,
- 13:2819 and 20 year olds are not making the grocery budget.
- 13:32They're not making the grocery list. They're not doing their own grocery shopping.
- 13:36So I did not really focus on telling them what to eat.
- 13:41Instead, I focused on how to eat.
- 13:43Like, you know, skip the three G's, gobble, gulp, and go.
- 13:48Let's skip those. Instead of gobble, gulp, and go, let's focus on our eating. Let's chew our food.
- 13:54Let's be mindful while we eat.
- 13:57And then I also talked about eating your veggies first, because the order that
- 14:02you eat your food impacts your blood sugar.
- 14:04When you eat your veggies first, the fiber helps your blood sugar stay stable.
- 14:11When you eat your fat and your protein before your carbs, it also helps your
- 14:16blood sugar stay more stable.
- 14:18So we talk about the order that you eat.
- 14:21Because again, the teens who read this book or who are given this book probably
- 14:26are not going to be in charge of deciding what they're going to eat on a regular
- 14:31basis. Sometimes, obviously, yes.
- 14:33But on a regular basis, they're probably still living with family or they're in a college dorm.
- 14:38They're doing something where other people are making the menu.
- 14:41So instead of telling them what to eat, I'm covering how to eat.
- 14:46I do cover some easy meal and snack ideas.
- 14:49There's one page about that. And again, this is a super short book.
- 14:53So one page is all it gets.
- 14:55Then chapter five is about the environment. And that includes the things around
- 15:00you that can be inside or outside. It can include things that you apply to your skin every day.
- 15:05It can include things that are beyond your control, like the weather.
- 15:09It also contains or it also includes what you view on your phone or computer.
- 15:14So the environment is a big topic and
- 15:17And I talk in this chapter about clutter, about who is around you,
- 15:23and getting out in nature.
- 15:25That is the book. There's a conclusion and there's a small list of additional
- 15:29resources if they want to dig in further into any of those topics.
- 15:34That is the book. So it's called Wellness Wisdom for Graduates,
- 15:37Easy Hacks to Create Holistic Health After High School.
- 15:41And again, I created it very short so that it is appealing to the graduates.
- 15:46I priced it so that you can order multiple for all of the graduates in your life.
- 15:52And also for yourself, if you want a quick, super short book on holistic health,
- 15:58again, it's not covering Hashimoto's, but it's covering holistic health.
- 16:01This is a great tiny little book. I am biased, of course, because I wrote it.
- 16:08But honestly, our teens need encouragement and practical tools.
- 16:12They have been called the most anxious generation.
- 16:16The pressure on the graduating students and the teens and young adults right
- 16:20now is greater than any time in history.
- 16:24Our teens need encouragement and practical tools as they head into this new
- 16:28season. So I hope that this book is one small way that you can support them.
- 16:33If you grab a copy, I would love to hear what you think or who you're giving it to.
- 16:37You can come over to our community at school, S-K-O-O-L, the Health with Hashimoto's
- 16:42community, and let us know.
- 16:44And if you are listening to this in real time in May of 2025,
- 16:49I welcome you to start the Holistic Hashimoto's course.
- 16:53Early spring is a fantastic time to do this program.
- 16:58It's about four weeks if you do it all in a row, but it's self-paced.
- 17:02So if you need more time, you have more time.
- 17:04If you want to do it faster, you can do it faster.
- 17:06Early spring, I find, is a fantastic time to do this type of thing because summer gets really busy.
- 17:14Now, I don't know about early spring for you. It is kind of busy.
- 17:17I've got graduation parties. We've got the end of the school,
- 17:21different things at school.
- 17:22My one homeschooler, he's doing projects.
- 17:26My graduate, we're preparing for his graduation. I know that May is busy.
- 17:31People call it Maycember, right? It's very busy. It's also a fantastic time
- 17:37to figure out what's going on with your health and take charge.
- 17:41So start the holistic health program right away.
- 17:45Do it ASAP before the busyness of the summer derails or maybe the relaxation
- 17:50of the summer derails your plans.
- 17:53I don't know about you, but sometimes those summer days, I just want to relax
- 17:58and you can relax better when your health is under control.
- 18:03So join the Holistic Hashimoto's course. Again, all of the links are in the
- 18:07show notes. You can go to Amazon and get the book.
- 18:10That link will be there. You can go to school and give me ideas for the holistic,
- 18:17what am I calling it? The Hashimoto's Health Lab series.
- 18:20That is three different things. And I know for a podcast, I'm only supposed
- 18:24to leave you with one call to action, one action to do.
- 18:29And so I guess go down and click on that link in the show notes,
- 18:33and then click on the one that's appropriate for you.
- 18:35Because all of these things are helpful. You've got the graduation book,
- 18:39Wellness Wisdom for Graduates.
- 18:41You've got the Holistic Hashimoto's course for yourself for better health.
- 18:45And then you have the link to our community where you can talk to others,
- 18:50you can get support, and you can leave recommendations for the summer series.
- 18:55All right, I will see you next week. I have one more interview for you before
- 18:58we kick off that summer series, and I am so excited for you to hear it.
- 19:02All right, I will see you next week on the Health with Hashimoto's podcast.
- 19:06This podcast is for informational and educational purposes only.
- 19:09Music.
