Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: January 12, 1954 brought NBC listeners episode 230 of Dragnet,
- 0:06Speaker 1: The Big Switch. Jack Webb is Detective Sergeant Joe Friday,
- 0:11Speaker 1: joined by Ben Alexander as Officer Frank Smith. Their homicide
- 0:16Speaker 1: detail investigation begins when Mona Fenton is found unconscious in
- 0:21Speaker 1: a low-cost hotel room with the gas turned on. What
- 0:25Speaker 1: appears at first to be an attempted suicide leads Friday
- 0:29Speaker 1: and Smith to examine the hotel registration and the circumstances
- 0:33Speaker 1: surrounding an unidentified man connected with the room. Virginia Gregg,
- 0:38Speaker 1: Victor Rodman, and Gene Tatum are heard in the supporting cast.
- 0:43Speaker 1: From Los Angeles, here is Dragnet, The Big Switch. Now,
- 0:48Speaker 1: back to the golden age of radio.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, the story you are about to hear
- 1:02Speaker 2: is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Dragnet is brought to you by Chesterfield, made by Liggett
- 1:09Speaker 3: & Myers, first major tobacco company to give you a
- 1:13Speaker 3: complete line of quality cigarettes.
- 1:23Speaker 2: You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned a homicide detail. A
- 1:27Speaker 2: young girl has been found in a cheap hotel room,
- 1:29Speaker 2: apparently an attempted suicide. There's reason to suspect foul play.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Your job, investigate. To sell a product, you have to
- 1:41Speaker 2: make it good and keep it good. What do the
- 1:45Speaker 2: latest reports show about Chesterfield? Well, our research laboratory has
- 1:49Speaker 2: compared it with the leading cigarettes in the country. Chesterfield
- 1:53Speaker 2: is highest in quality. Low in nicotine. Another good reason
- 1:57Speaker 2: why thousands of people are changing to Chesterfield every day.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Smoke America's most popular two-way cigarette. Regular or king size.
- 2:08Speaker 2: You'll find Chesterfield really mild. Really satisfying.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Best for you.
- 2:21Speaker 5: Dragnet.
- 2:22Speaker 3: The documented drama of an actual crime. For the next
- 2:25Speaker 3: 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 2:29Speaker 3: you will travel step by step on the side of
- 2:31Speaker 3: the law through an actual case transcribed from official police files.
- 2:35Speaker 3: From beginning to end, from crime to punishment, Dragnet is
- 2:39Speaker 3: the story of your police force in action.
- 2:47Speaker 6: It was Thursday, November 19th. It was warm in Los Angeles.
- 2:50Speaker 6: We were working the day watch on a homicide detail.
- 2:52Speaker 6: My partner is Frank Smith. The boss is Captain Lorman.
- 2:54Speaker 6: My name's Friday. We'd just gotten a call from Georgia
- 2:57Speaker 6: Street Receiving Hospital, and it was 9.46 a.m. when we
- 2:59Speaker 6: got to the second floor, the treatment room.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yes?
- 3:03Speaker 4: Would you like to see Dr.
- 3:04Speaker 7: Hall, please?
- 3:05Speaker 8: Come in, Joe. Joe? Frank?
- 3:08Speaker 1: Hi, Doc.
- 3:09Speaker 4: This the girl?
- 3:09Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 3:10Speaker 4: How's she doing?
- 3:11Speaker 8: I'm not sure yet. Just finished the transfusion.
- 3:13Speaker 4: And when are you going to know?
- 3:14Speaker 9: We think she's going to live, but there's no way
- 3:15Speaker 9: of telling right now how much damage has been done
- 3:17Speaker 9: to the brain tissue.
- 3:18Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 3:19Speaker 9: Bad bruise on her face. Must have received a bad blow.
- 3:22Speaker 9: Might have gotten it when she fell.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 3:24Speaker 8: Let's go outside. I can use the smoke.
- 3:26Speaker 10: Okay.
- 3:26Speaker 8: Well, if there's any change, I'll be out in the hall.
- 3:29Speaker 11: All right, doctor.
- 3:33Speaker 8: You got a cigarette? I'm fresh on.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Yeah, here you are.
- 3:37Speaker 12: Frank? Yeah, thanks.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Here's a match.
- 3:43Speaker 12: Thanks.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I didn't know you gave transfusions in cases like this, Doc.
- 3:47Speaker 8: Don't have to very often.
- 3:48Speaker 9: You see, a thing like this, the carbon monoxide in
- 3:50Speaker 9: the gas joins with the hemoglobin and the red cells
- 3:52Speaker 9: won't let go. Blood takes the monoxide through the system
- 3:55Speaker 9: and suffocates the brain tissue. We've given her some coramine,
- 3:58Speaker 9: helps speed up the heart action. The way it looks,
- 4:00Speaker 9: she's got a good chance of living, but we won't
- 4:02Speaker 9: know how bad it really is until later.
- 4:03Speaker 4: It's a rough one, isn't it?
- 4:05Speaker 8: You find out who she is?
- 4:06Speaker 4: Well, according to the stuff we found near Waller, her
- 4:08Speaker 4: name's Mona Fenton. Another thing that doesn't make much sense, Doc,
- 4:11Speaker 4: she registered into the hotel as Mrs. John Norris. Near
- 4:14Speaker 4: as we can find out, she wasn't married.
- 4:15Speaker 8: How'd you come up with that?
- 4:16Speaker 6: Well, when the office got word about it, we tried
- 4:18Speaker 6: to get in touch with her husband. We called the
- 4:20Speaker 6: phone number on the ID that we found in her wallet,
- 4:22Speaker 6: talked with her mother. She says the girl's single.
- 4:24Speaker 8: How about the guy she was with? Have you been
- 4:25Speaker 8: able to talk to him?
- 4:26Speaker 4: No, haven't found out who he is.
- 4:27Speaker 8: Name doesn't check out, huh?
- 4:29Speaker 4: Not that we can find.
- 4:30Speaker 8: How about the mother? She give you anything?
- 4:31Speaker 4: We just talked to her for a minute. We're going
- 4:33Speaker 4: over there when we leave here.
- 4:35Speaker 8: Maybe she can come up with some answers.
- 4:36Speaker 4: I sure hope so.
- 4:37Speaker 8: Couple of more questions you can ask her.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Yeah, what's that?
- 4:40Speaker 8: Find out if the girl's been under a doctor's care.
- 4:42Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 4:43Speaker 8: Checked her over when she came in. Found marks.
- 4:45Speaker 4: On her arm?
- 4:46Speaker 8: Yeah. I think she's an.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Addict.
- 4:53Speaker 4: At 8.30 a.m.
- 4:54Speaker 6: That morning, a guest in a small hotel on Grand
- 4:56Speaker 6: Avenue had thought that he detected the odor of gas
- 4:58Speaker 6: in the halls of the building. He notified the desk clerk,
- 5:02Speaker 6: and together they conducted a search of the premises. Finally,
- 5:04Speaker 6: they ascertained that the escaping gas was coming from a
- 5:07Speaker 6: room on the third floor of the hotel. When the
- 5:09Speaker 6: desk clerk got no answer to his calls, he used
- 5:12Speaker 6: a passkey to open the door. Sprawled across the bed
- 5:14Speaker 6: was a girl who appeared to be in her early 20s.
- 5:17Speaker 6: The gas heater in the room had been turned on
- 5:19Speaker 6: full and the windows were closed, locked and.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Stuffed with pieces of torn sheets to keep the fumes
- 5:23Speaker 4: in the room.
- 5:25Speaker 6: The quick action of the desk clerk had undoubtedly saved
- 5:27Speaker 6: the girl's life. While a hotel guest called an ambulance,
- 5:31Speaker 6: the clerk turned off the gas, opened the windows and
- 5:33Speaker 6: administered artificial respiration to the girl until the ambulance crew arrived.
- 5:37Speaker 6: As an attempted suicide, the homicide detail had to make
- 5:40Speaker 6: an investigation and Frank and I.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Were assigned to the case.
- 5:43Speaker 6: After we talked to Doc Hall at Georgia Street Receiving Hospital,
- 5:46Speaker 6: we drove down to the hotel.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Where the girl had been found.
- 5:49Speaker 10: Right in here.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Anybody been in this room since the other officers left?
- 5:55Speaker 8: No, sir.
- 5:55Speaker 10: Told me to lock it until you could see it.
- 5:57Speaker 4: All right, sir. This is just the way you found it,
- 6:00Speaker 4: is that right?
- 6:00Speaker 13: Well, yes.
- 6:01Speaker 14: Of course, the gas is turned off and I opened
- 6:03Speaker 14: the windows, but everything else is the same.
- 6:05Speaker 4: I see. From what you said on the phone, she
- 6:10Speaker 4: came in last night. Is that right? Yes, sir.
- 6:12Speaker 10: At least that's what the registration book says.
- 6:14Speaker 14: They checked in at 10.15. Did you take care of them? No,
- 6:19Speaker 14: I was out to dinner when they got here.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Who checked them in?
- 6:21Speaker 10: Jeff, Jeff Christensen.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Is he around?
- 6:24Speaker 10: No, not right now. He'll probably be back tonight.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Know where we can find him?
- 6:28Speaker 10: I don't know. See, Jeff got paid last night. Got
- 6:31Speaker 10: his week's wages.
- 6:33Speaker 14: Last I saw him, he was on his way out
- 6:34Speaker 14: on the town with some of his friends.
- 6:37Speaker 10: Jeff goes out on the town. Maybe we don't see
- 6:39Speaker 10: him in a couple of days.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I see.
- 6:41Speaker 4: But you figure he'll be back tonight, huh?
- 6:42Speaker 8: Oh, yes, yes.
- 6:43Speaker 10: Jeff only worked a couple of days last week, so
- 6:45Speaker 10: he ain't gonna go on much.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Of the town. Mm-hmm. Did you see the man Miss
- 6:50Speaker 4: Fenton came in with?
- 6:51Speaker 10: No, I didn't. They were already in the room when
- 6:53Speaker 10: I got back from dinner. I checked the book. I
- 6:55Speaker 10: got the money from Jeff before I left.
- 6:58Speaker 14: The man must have gone out sometime earlier this morning.
- 7:01Speaker 14: I guess I was asleep. My room's just back of
- 7:03Speaker 14: the desk. The fellow must have got out while I
- 7:05Speaker 14: was asleep.
- 7:06Speaker 4: I see. Did you get any calls from the room
- 7:08Speaker 4: at all?
- 7:09Speaker 10: Not a one. Like I told those uniformed officers we hear,
- 7:12Speaker 10: I didn't see them at all. Not a people. Matter
- 7:14Speaker 10: of fact, I was thinking how nice and quiet they were.
- 7:17Speaker 14: But the way the room looks, they sure must have
- 7:20Speaker 14: had some sort of argument.
- 7:21Speaker 11: Yes, sir.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Would you know if they brought any baggage with them?
- 7:25Speaker 14: Matter of fact, I know they didn't. Sure looks like
- 7:28Speaker 14: they did some heavy drinking, don't it?
- 7:30Speaker 10: Mm-hmm. Glasses. That bottle's almost empty. Yeah. I'd rather you
- 7:35Speaker 10: wouldn't touch the bottle. Oh, yeah, yeah, well, I'm... Say,
- 7:39Speaker 10: you talk to the girls' people yet?
- 7:41Speaker 4: No, sir, we haven't.
- 7:42Speaker 10: But you plan to see them, aren't you?
- 7:43Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 7:44Speaker 10: Yeah, I wonder if you'd do me a favor. You
- 7:46Speaker 10: know when you see a people?
- 7:48Speaker 4: Yes, sir, what's that?
- 7:49Speaker 10: Well, I don't much mind the dirty glasses and having
- 7:51Speaker 10: to straighten the room up.
- 7:52Speaker 14: That's all part of the hotel business. But I wish
- 7:55Speaker 14: you'd say something about the torn sheets. Tell the people
- 7:58Speaker 14: about them. I don't want to cause no trouble, but
- 8:00Speaker 14: maybe if they know how about the sheets were all
- 8:02Speaker 14: torn up, they'd want to make good on them.
- 8:05Speaker 10: You will mention them, won't you? Mm-hmm. Yes, sir.
- 8:08Speaker 4: I'll call the office, Joe, have them send out a crew,
- 8:10Speaker 4: see what prints we can lift. All right, fine.
- 8:13Speaker 10: Who else has a passkey to this room? Oh, you
- 8:15Speaker 10: mean beside me?
- 8:15Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 8:17Speaker 10: Well, ain't nobody. Where's the key kept?
- 8:19Speaker 14: It hangs on a nail next to the desk, that
- 8:21Speaker 14: big nail there. It hangs right on it.
- 8:23Speaker 6: When you came into the room, did you notice if
- 8:25Speaker 6: there was anything around the door to keep the gas inside?
- 8:28Speaker 10: I don't follow you.
- 8:29Speaker 6: Well, you found pieces of torn sheets around the windows,
- 8:32Speaker 6: you say. Now, was there anything like that by the door?
- 8:35Speaker 10: Oh, oh, yes, I'm with you now, yeah. Now, let
- 8:38Speaker 10: me think. As I remember, no, no, there wasn't nothing there,
- 8:43Speaker 10: just around the windows.
- 8:45Speaker 4: Was the key in the lock when you came up here?
- 8:47Speaker 10: You mean inside the room?
- 8:48Speaker 4: Yes, sir, that's right.
- 8:49Speaker 14: No, no, the reason I know that for sure is
- 8:51Speaker 14: that I looked through the keyhole, tried to see what
- 8:53Speaker 14: was in the room.
- 8:55Speaker 10: No, sir, the key wasn't in. Of course, that don't
- 8:57Speaker 10: mean nothing.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Sir?
- 8:59Speaker 10: Well, only a couple of the rooms have keys anyway.
- 9:01Speaker 10: We don't use them anymore.
- 9:02Speaker 5: You mean you don't lock the doors? Sure, we lock
- 9:05Speaker 5: the doors. We got them all locked all the time.
- 9:07Speaker 5: This is a respectable hotel. Of course we lock the doors.
- 9:11Speaker 5: But not with those keys. We got those other locks
- 9:13Speaker 5: on the doors.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Oh, I see.
- 9:14Speaker 10: You see? Yeah, see that? Sort of like Yale locks.
- 9:17Speaker 10: That kind, you know. That's what locks the doors, not
- 9:20Speaker 10: the other keys.
- 9:21Speaker 4: Yes, I see.
- 9:22Speaker 10: Of course we lock the doors.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Yes.
- 9:26Speaker 10: The locks catch when the doors close, though.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Is that right?
- 9:28Speaker 10: Yep. Locks them tight.
- 9:31Speaker 4: I got in touch with Lee Jones, Joe. He sent
- 9:33Speaker 4: a crew right over.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Good.
- 9:35Speaker 4: I checked with Doc Hall.
- 9:36Speaker 10: How's the girl?
- 9:37Speaker 4: Oh, she's coming along. Doc says she's doing better.
- 9:39Speaker 14: Oh, these fellas that you're going to have roaming around here.
- 9:42Speaker 10: What's this all about? Is something wrong?
- 9:44Speaker 4: We're not sure yet, sir.
- 9:46Speaker 14: Oh, dear, dear.
- 9:46Speaker 10: It always happens like this, don't it? What's that, sir?
- 9:49Speaker 10: I try to run a respectable place. Goodness knows I do.
- 9:52Speaker 10: I keep it right up to date. It's good service.
- 9:54Speaker 14: And something like this happens. There was no reason for
- 9:57Speaker 14: that girl to do a thing like this.
- 9:58Speaker 10: Not in my hotel. Now you cops come in here.
- 10:01Speaker 10: Cops are going to be all over the place. Tenants
- 10:03Speaker 10: aren't going to like it.
- 10:04Speaker 14: They ain't going to like it at all. Just because
- 10:06Speaker 14: of that girl. Why'd she have to come in here
- 10:09Speaker 14: and do a thing like this?
- 10:11Speaker 4: Why'd she have to do it at all, sir? 11.26 a.m.
- 10:22Speaker 4: We questioned the people in the hotel.
- 10:24Speaker 6: None of them could remember hearing any undue noise coming
- 10:26Speaker 6: from the room where the girl had tried to kill herself. Normally,
- 10:29Speaker 6: the investigation would have been routine, but with the possibility
- 10:32Speaker 6: of foul play, we had to check every angle and
- 10:34Speaker 6: then check it again.
- 10:35Speaker 4: The crew from the crime lab arrived and went over
- 10:37Speaker 4: the room.
- 10:39Speaker 6: Under the bed, they found an empty capsule, the type
- 10:41Speaker 6: commonly used to dispense heroin. They also came up with
- 10:44Speaker 6: a clean set of fingerprints on both glasses. They were photographed,
- 10:48Speaker 6: and the water glasses themselves were removed to the crime
- 10:50Speaker 6: lab to be booked as evidence. The registration card the
- 10:54Speaker 6: couple had signed was turned over to Don Meyer in handwriting.
- 10:57Speaker 6: The name was checked through our record bureau, through the
- 10:59Speaker 6: phone book, and through the city directory, but when the
- 11:01Speaker 6: leads were checked out, we were no further in knowing
- 11:03Speaker 6: who the man was who'd taken the room with Mona Fenton.
- 11:06Speaker 6: Word was left at the hotel for the handyman to
- 11:08Speaker 6: contact us as soon as he returned. Word was also
- 11:11Speaker 6: left that if the man who'd registered with the Fenton
- 11:13Speaker 6: girl returned.
- 11:14Speaker 4: We were to be called.
- 11:14Speaker 6: 11.45 a.m. The men from the crime lab finished their
- 11:18Speaker 6: investigation and returned to the office to compile the results.
- 11:21Speaker 6: Frank and I left the hotel and drove out to
- 11:22Speaker 6: the address listed on the girl's identification. It was a
- 11:25Speaker 6: large white colonial home near one of the colleges. We
- 11:28Speaker 6: rang the doorbell and waited.
- 11:31Speaker 14: Yes?
- 11:31Speaker 4: Mrs. Fenton?
- 11:32Speaker 13: Yes, that's right. What is it you want?
- 11:33Speaker 4: Police officers would like to talk to you.
- 11:35Speaker 13: Oh, come in.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 11:39Speaker 13: It's about Mona, isn't it?
- 11:41Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am.
- 11:41Speaker 13: I knew something like this would happen. I knew it
- 11:43Speaker 13: all along.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Beg your pardon?
- 11:44Speaker 13: When she first had this crazy idea, when she first
- 11:47Speaker 13: told me about it, I knew. Kids, try to tell them.
- 11:50Speaker 13: Just try and they tell you that times have changed.
- 11:53Speaker 13: They say that you're not keeping up with the time.
- 11:55Speaker 13: They know it all. Nobody can tell them anything.
- 11:58Speaker 4: But what idea is this, Mrs. Fenton?
- 11:59Speaker 13: When she wanted to quit school and take the job
- 12:01Speaker 13: in that drive-in restaurant. The most ridiculous thing I ever
- 12:03Speaker 13: heard of. But nobody could talk.
- 12:05Speaker 10: Her out of it.
- 12:05Speaker 13: Lord knows I tried. I knew something like this would happen.
- 12:10Speaker 13: I just knew it.
- 12:12Speaker 7: Yes, ma'am.
- 12:12Speaker 6: Do you know any reason why your daughter might want
- 12:14Speaker 6: to take her own life?
- 12:16Speaker 13: Are you a policeman, too?
- 12:17Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am. I'm Frank Smith. This is my partner, Joe Friday.
- 12:20Speaker 13: How do you do?
- 12:20Speaker 4: How do you do? Do you know any reason why
- 12:22Speaker 4: your daughter might want to kill herself?
- 12:25Speaker 13: It's a little hard to say, Mr.
- 12:26Speaker 10: Friday.
- 12:27Speaker 4: What's that?
- 12:28Speaker 13: Mona and I had quite an argument about her leaving school.
- 12:30Speaker 13: It was one of those silly things that starts and
- 12:32Speaker 13: gets all out of hand, you know. We both have pride,
- 12:36Speaker 13: and neither one of us was going to back down.
- 12:39Speaker 13: I haven't seen Mona to talk to for over a month.
- 12:42Speaker 4: Does she live here, ma'am?
- 12:43Speaker 13: Yes, she does, Mr.
- 12:44Speaker 10: Smith.
- 12:45Speaker 13: There's an outside entrance to her room. She comes and
- 12:47Speaker 13: goes as she pleases. Doesn't eat her meals here, so
- 12:50Speaker 13: I hardly ever see her.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Do you know if she's been under a doctor's care?
- 12:54Speaker 13: I don't think so. Why do you ask that?
- 12:56Speaker 4: Well, is your daughter a diabetic?
- 12:58Speaker 13: No, she isn't, Mr. Friday. Why all these questions about
- 13:02Speaker 13: Mona and a doctor? What are you trying to find out?
- 13:03Speaker 4: Does your daughter have any special boyfriends, Mrs. Fenton?
- 13:06Speaker 13: She did have.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Who was that?
- 13:08Speaker 13: Richard Burdick.
- 13:09Speaker 10: Nice boy.
- 13:10Speaker 13: Mona and he were planning to get married when they
- 13:12Speaker 13: got out of school.
- 13:13Speaker 4: Then.
- 13:14Speaker 13: Along with everything else that just blew up. Everything seemed
- 13:17Speaker 13: to go all at the same time.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Did your daughter have any trouble with this verdict?
- 13:22Speaker 11: No.
- 13:23Speaker 13: Nothing you could call real trouble. It's just that they
- 13:26Speaker 13: agreed to disagree. It was Mona's idea. Richard didn't want
- 13:29Speaker 13: anything to change. He was very much in love with her.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 13:32Speaker 13: Does he know about this?
- 13:33Speaker 4: I don't think so, Ms. Fenton. We haven't told him.
- 13:35Speaker 13: I don't know what he's going to do when he
- 13:36Speaker 13: hears about it. It's going to hit him awfully hard.
- 13:39Speaker 13: He's the sensitive type.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Does your daughter have any close friends that she might
- 13:42Speaker 4: confide in?
- 13:43Speaker 13: I suppose she does. She's talked about some of the
- 13:45Speaker 13: girls where she worked.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Would you give us their names, please? Oh, yes, I will.
- 13:49Speaker 13: I'll write them down for you, those I can remember.
- 13:51Speaker 4: All right, fine.
- 13:52Speaker 10: Has your daughter been in good spirits lately?
- 13:54Speaker 13: As far as I know, yes. She's always seemed happy
- 13:56Speaker 13: enough when I saw her. I told you, we haven't
- 13:58Speaker 13: said much more than hello the last month, but she's
- 14:00Speaker 13: seemed happy.
- 14:02Speaker 4: You said that she broke up with this Burdick boy,
- 14:04Speaker 4: is that right?
- 14:04Speaker 10: Yes. When was that?
- 14:06Speaker 13: Six weeks, two months ago.
- 14:08Speaker 4: You know what caused it?
- 14:09Speaker 13: The job, all the other things. Mona kept making dates
- 14:13Speaker 13: with him and then breaking them at the last minute.
- 14:15Speaker 13: I guess Richard just got tired of being stood up.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Well, did he and your daughter have any arguments that
- 14:18Speaker 4: you know of?
- 14:19Speaker 12: No.
- 14:20Speaker 13: They just decided that it wouldn't work out for them.
- 14:23Speaker 13: They just decided to stop seeing each other.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Did your daughter have any other steady boyfriends? Anyone that
- 14:28Speaker 4: she saw quite a.
- 14:28Speaker 10: Bit of, maybe?
- 14:29Speaker 13: Well, there was one boy. He was quite a bit
- 14:31Speaker 13: older than Mona. She saw a lot of him the
- 14:34Speaker 13: last couple of weeks.
- 14:35Speaker 4: You know who he was?
- 14:37Speaker 13: No, I never met him. I only saw him once.
- 14:38Speaker 4: What if you could describe him for us?
- 14:41Speaker 13: No, I'm afraid I can't. He drove by for Mona
- 14:43Speaker 13: one night, going to pick her up for a date.
- 14:45Speaker 13: Parked out in front and honked the horn.
- 14:46Speaker 7: I see.
- 14:47Speaker 13: I went to the front door to tell him to
- 14:48Speaker 13: come in. Mona wasn't ready yet, but he wouldn't. Just
- 14:50Speaker 13: sat out there and waited. I didn't get a good
- 14:52Speaker 13: look at him.
- 14:53Speaker 4: Could you describe the car for us?
- 14:55Speaker 1: Not good.
- 14:57Speaker 13: It was one of those foreign cars, a convertible. I
- 15:00Speaker 13: think it might have been a Jaguar. I'm not sure
- 15:01Speaker 13: about that, though.
- 15:02Speaker 4: But you're sure it wasn't an American automobile?
- 15:04Speaker 13: Yes, I'm sure about that.
- 15:06Speaker 4: How about the color of the car? Can you tell
- 15:07Speaker 4: us that?
- 15:08Speaker 13: It was awfully dark out there. I'm not sure. I'd
- 15:12Speaker 13: rather not say, officer, if I can't be sure. You
- 15:14Speaker 13: understand that. I wouldn't want to tell you something and
- 15:16Speaker 13: then have it turn out to be wrong. You can
- 15:17Speaker 13: understand that, can't you?
- 15:18Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am, of course.
- 15:20Speaker 13: Did you see Mona this morning?
- 15:21Speaker 4: Yes, we did.
- 15:23Speaker 13: Is she all right?
- 15:24Speaker 4: They think so, yes.
- 15:25Speaker 13: Aren't you sure?
- 15:26Speaker 6: Well, when we talked to the doctor, they were doing
- 15:28Speaker 6: everything they could. They seemed to think that she was
- 15:30Speaker 6: going to be all right.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Thank God.
- 15:34Speaker 13: It's so hard, Mr. Friday, to know that your child
- 15:36Speaker 13: is sick, that she tried to kill herself. to want
- 15:39Speaker 13: to go to her and not be able to.
- 15:44Speaker 12: It's so hard.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Try to take it easy if you can, Miss Fenton.
- 15:47Speaker 4: If you'll just give us the names of the girls
- 15:49Speaker 4: that you might know, we'll be on our way.
- 15:52Speaker 7: Yes, I'll write them for you.
- 15:54Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 15:55Speaker 13: Excuse me?
- 15:56Speaker 4: Shirley?
- 15:59Speaker 14: Hello? Yes, it is.
- 16:02Speaker 10: What?
- 16:03Speaker 13: Yes, they're here. Just a moment.
- 16:05Speaker 10: It's for you.
- 16:06Speaker 4: I'll get it, Jeff.
- 16:10Speaker 13: I'll get those names for.
- 16:11Speaker 10: You, Mr. Friday.
- 16:11Speaker 4: All right, fine. Did your daughter ever refer to this
- 16:15Speaker 4: man in the foreign car by name?
- 16:16Speaker 13: No, I don't think she did. All I know is
- 16:19Speaker 13: that whenever she went out with him, it was the
- 16:21Speaker 13: big date of the bunch.
- 16:22Speaker 4: How often did she see him?
- 16:23Speaker 13: Maybe a couple of times a week. Might have been more.
- 16:26Speaker 13: I had no way of knowing what she was doing.
- 16:28Speaker 13: She kept pretty much to herself when she met him,
- 16:31Speaker 13: but I could tell he was the big thing in
- 16:33Speaker 13: her life. He was it.
- 16:36Speaker 10: Joe? Yeah?
- 16:37Speaker 8: Stay a minute?
- 16:38Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Excuse me, Miss Fenton.
- 16:40Speaker 13: I'll finish this list.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 16:43Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Call was from Jack Smyers at the office.
- 16:45Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Just removed her to the general hospital.
- 16:47Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 16:47Speaker 4: She had a relapse. They don't think she's going to live.
- 16:59Speaker 3: You are listening to Dragnet, the authentic story of your
- 17:03Speaker 3: police force in action.
- 17:04Speaker 2: There are good reasons why thousands of people are changing
- 17:07Speaker 2: to Chesterfield every day. Why Chesterfield is the largest selling
- 17:12Speaker 2: two-way cigarette in America. Why Chesterfield is best for me
- 17:16Speaker 2: and best for you. People these days want facts. When
- 17:20Speaker 2: you want people to use your product, you have to
- 17:22Speaker 2: tell them what effect it has on people who do
- 17:24Speaker 2: use it regularly. That's why a doctor has examined for
- 17:27Speaker 2: almost two years a large group of Chesterfield smokers. Forty-five
- 17:31Speaker 2: percent of them have, on the average, been smoking Chesterfields
- 17:34Speaker 2: for well over ten years.
- 17:37Speaker 4: What is the effect on these people from smoking Chesterfield?
- 17:40Speaker 2: No adverse effects to the nose, throat, and sinuses, says
- 17:44Speaker 2: the doctor. Consider Chesterfield's record with these smokers, with millions
- 17:49Speaker 2: of other smokers throughout America. Another good reason for you
- 17:53Speaker 2: to change to Chesterfield. Regular or king size, Chesterfield is
- 17:58Speaker 2: best for me, best for you.
- 18:11Speaker 6: We obtained the name of the drive-in restaurant where the
- 18:13Speaker 6: fenton girl was employed we also got the names of
- 18:15Speaker 6: the girls that she worked with and the address of
- 18:17Speaker 6: her boyfriend richard burdick mrs fenton also gave us a
- 18:20Speaker 6: list of names of persons who might be able to
- 18:22Speaker 6: aid us in the investigation under further questioning the mother
- 18:26Speaker 6: was still unable to furnish us with a motive for
- 18:28Speaker 6: her daughter's attempt to take her own life the apparent
- 18:31Speaker 6: lack of a motive or any type of a suicide
- 18:33Speaker 6: note coupled with the bruise on the girl's chin made
- 18:36Speaker 6: the likelihood of foul play more than possible. 12.57 p.m.
- 18:40Speaker 6: We left the Fenton home and drove over to the drive-in.
- 18:42Speaker 6: We stopped on the way and put in a call
- 18:44Speaker 6: to the office. There still hadn't been any report of
- 18:46Speaker 6: the handyman at the hotel, the only person who could
- 18:48Speaker 6: give us a description of the man who'd registered at
- 18:50Speaker 6: the place with the Fenton girl. When we got to
- 18:53Speaker 6: the drive-in, we asked about a Peggy Griegson, one of
- 18:55Speaker 6: the girls on the list. After a few minutes, the
- 18:57Speaker 6: girl came over to our car.
- 19:02Speaker 12: You want to see me?
- 19:03Speaker 4: You Peggy Grigson?
- 19:04Speaker 7: Yeah, why?
- 19:04Speaker 4: We'd like to ask you some questions about Mona Fenton.
- 19:06Speaker 13: Who are you guys?
- 19:07Speaker 4: Police officers. We'd just like to talk to you.
- 19:09Speaker 12: I've got to get it okayed with the manager. I'm
- 19:10Speaker 12: on duty now, lunchtime.
- 19:12Speaker 10: Pretty busy.
- 19:12Speaker 12: I've got to get it okayed.
- 19:13Speaker 4: I'll take care of it. All right, fine. I'll check
- 19:15Speaker 4: with the manager, Joe.
- 19:16Speaker 14: Right.
- 19:17Speaker 12: This isn't going to take long. I've got a couple
- 19:18Speaker 12: of customers waiting for orders.
- 19:20Speaker 4: My partner will take care of it.
- 19:21Speaker 12: Why ain't the manager knowing that worries me? It's the
- 19:23Speaker 12: tips they're going to leave. Make what I do, and
- 19:24Speaker 12: the tips are important.
- 19:25Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am.
- 19:26Speaker 12: It's all this about Mona, anyway. What are the cops
- 19:29Speaker 12: after her for?
- 19:29Speaker 4: Well, she tried to kill herself this morning.
- 19:32Speaker 12: Mona?
- 19:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:34Speaker 12: Why? Why'd you do a thing like that?
- 19:35Speaker 4: Well, we thought maybe you could help us there.
- 19:37Speaker 12: Why me? I haven't got anything to do with it.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Well, we understand you were pretty friendly with her.
- 19:40Speaker 12: Well, sure, I was a friend of Mona's, but I
- 19:42Speaker 12: don't know anything about no suicide. I don't know anything
- 19:45Speaker 12: about it, and I don't want to.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Do you know any reason she might try to take
- 19:47Speaker 4: her own life?
- 19:48Speaker 12: Not a reason in the world.
- 19:49Speaker 7: Not Mona.
- 19:50Speaker 6: Do you know if she was under a doctor's care
- 19:51Speaker 6: for any reason?
- 19:53Speaker 4: No.
- 19:53Speaker 12: I mean, I don't know. She didn't say anything about it,
- 19:55Speaker 12: never said a word.
- 19:57Speaker 13: Why is she.
- 19:57Speaker 6: Well, that's what we're trying to find out. Can you
- 19:59Speaker 6: think of any enemies she had? Anybody who might have
- 20:01Speaker 6: wanted to hurt her?
- 20:02Speaker 12: How far is this going to go?
- 20:03Speaker 4: Well, how do you mean, miss?
- 20:05Speaker 12: I mean, who's going to hear about this? Who's going
- 20:06Speaker 12: to hear the answers I'm going to give her?
- 20:08Speaker 4: Well, no one. Not what he got for us.
- 20:10Speaker 12: I'll give you this for free. If anything happened to Mona,
- 20:12Speaker 12: you go talk to Dick Burdick. Talk to him. He'll
- 20:14Speaker 12: be able to tell you.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Why'd he say that?
- 20:16Speaker 12: Because it's true. No other reason. He's a real bum.
- 20:19Speaker 12: You ask me, I think there's something wrong with him.
- 20:21Speaker 12: You know, in the head.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Well, do you have any reason to say that?
- 20:24Speaker 12: All the reason in the world. Poor girl, this bum
- 20:27Speaker 12: all the time coming around giving her trouble. All the
- 20:29Speaker 12: time telling her how he's going to kill her and
- 20:30Speaker 12: anybody that comes near her.
- 20:32Speaker 4: Burdick said that to Miss Fenton, did he?
- 20:33Speaker 12: Half a dozen times. Wasn't one a week ago. Mona
- 20:37Speaker 12: told me she told him off, told him to get lost.
- 20:39Speaker 12: She wanted any part of him to leave her alone.
- 20:41Speaker 12: He made a big scene. Mona told me all about it.
- 20:43Speaker 12: One day, this Terry drove in here. Got one of
- 20:46Speaker 12: those flashy foreign cars.
- 20:47Speaker 4: The Jaguar?
- 20:48Speaker 12: I think so, yeah.
- 20:49Speaker 4: All right, go ahead.
- 20:50Speaker 12: Well, one day, he drove into the place. Mona took
- 20:52Speaker 12: care of him. I guess he liked Mona. He kept
- 20:55Speaker 12: coming back. Always parked in her station. Anyway, this Burdick
- 20:59Speaker 12: kid found out about it. Wasn't anything for him to
- 21:01Speaker 12: worry about, but he made a big thing about it.
- 21:02Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 21:03Speaker 12: Told Mona she was supposed to stop seeing Terry. Said
- 21:06Speaker 12: if she didn't, he was going to cause real trouble.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Did he say what he was going to do?
- 21:09Speaker 12: I think he was kidding. I don't think he really
- 21:11Speaker 12: meant it.
- 21:11Speaker 4: He's just a kid. Well, what did he say?
- 21:13Speaker 12: I really don't think he meant it.
- 21:15Speaker 7: Well, all right.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Now, what did he say to her?
- 21:17Speaker 12: Said if he found them together again, he'd kill them both.
- 21:27Speaker 4: We talked to the other girls on the drive-in.
- 21:29Speaker 6: From them, we got the same story about the scenes
- 21:31Speaker 6: that Richard Burdick had created. We got more information about
- 21:34Speaker 6: the threats that he'd made against the Fenton girl and
- 21:36Speaker 6: Terry Hamilton. From one of the girls, we got the
- 21:38Speaker 6: address of Hamilton. 2.45 p.m. We left the drive-in and
- 21:42Speaker 6: drove over to the address of the.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Girl's boyfriend, Richard Burdick. We talked to the landlady.
- 21:46Speaker 6: She told us that the Burdick boy had regular habits.
- 21:48Speaker 6: He paid his rent on time. He never had any visitors.
- 21:50Speaker 6: She told us that he wasn't in his room at
- 21:52Speaker 6: that time, but she said that she'd let us in.
- 21:54Speaker 4: In her company, we went upstairs. She unlocked the door,
- 21:56Speaker 4: and Frank and I went in. Mom checked the bedroom.
- 21:59Speaker 4: I'll take the kitchen.
- 21:59Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 22:06Speaker 4: Nothing out there. How'd you do? Looks like we're a
- 22:08Speaker 4: little late.
- 22:09Speaker 7: What?
- 22:10Speaker 4: His clothes are gone. We checked the room further.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Every indication was that Richard Burdick had left the apartment
- 22:19Speaker 6: in a hurry. We talked to the landlady again. She
- 22:21Speaker 6: could give us no reason for his disappearance. She gave
- 22:23Speaker 6: us the name of his employer. We put in a
- 22:25Speaker 6: call to them, but they told us that Burdick had
- 22:27Speaker 6: failed to show.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Up for work that day.
- 22:28Speaker 6: 4.15 p.m. We put in a call to the hotel
- 22:32Speaker 6: on Grand Avenue, but the handyman still hadn't returned and
- 22:35Speaker 6: there'd been no.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Word from him. We went back to the office and
- 22:37Speaker 4: checked the name.
- 22:38Speaker 6: Richard Burdick through R & I, but we found no
- 22:40Speaker 6: criminal record for anybody answering his description.
- 22:43Speaker 4: We put out a local and an APB on him.
- 22:45Speaker 4: At 4.39 p.m.
- 22:46Speaker 6: We got a call from General Hospital telling us that
- 22:48Speaker 6: the Fenton girl had regained consciousness and that we could
- 22:50Speaker 6: talk to her. Frank and I left the office and
- 22:52Speaker 6: traveled Code 2 out to the hospital. The doctor on
- 22:55Speaker 6: duty told us that the girl was out of danger,
- 22:57Speaker 6: but that she was very weak. He asked us not
- 22:59Speaker 6: to get her excited, and he let us into her room.
- 23:05Speaker 4: Miss Fenton?
- 23:08Speaker 7: Yes, who are you?
- 23:09Speaker 4: Police officers.
- 23:11Speaker 7: Why can't you leave me alone?
- 23:13Speaker 13: Go away.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Just a couple of questions we'd like to ask you.
- 23:15Speaker 7: I don't want to talk to anybody. Why didn't you
- 23:18Speaker 7: leave things the way they were? Why didn't you leave
- 23:19Speaker 7: me alone?
- 23:20Speaker 4: You had a lot of people worried, miss.
- 23:22Speaker 7: No reason for it. It'd be better all the way
- 23:26Speaker 7: around if things had happened the way I planned them.
- 23:28Speaker 4: And you did try to kill yourself?
- 23:30Speaker 14: Yes.
- 23:31Speaker 4: Who was with you in that hotel room?
- 23:32Speaker 13: You mean Mr.
- 23:33Speaker 10: Morris?
- 23:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:35Speaker 7: It was Terry. It was always Terry. He was going
- 23:38Speaker 7: to marry me, then he didn't. He said he would
- 23:40Speaker 7: and he didn't.
- 23:42Speaker 4: That way you did what you did?
- 23:44Speaker 11: Yes.
- 23:45Speaker 4: You used narcotics, Miss Fenton?
- 23:47Speaker 8: Hmm?
- 23:47Speaker 4: You used narcotics?
- 23:49Speaker 7: Yes, it was Terry's idea too. I think that's all
- 23:53Speaker 7: he wanted with me, just to get me hooked so
- 23:55Speaker 7: I'd have to do what he said. I think that
- 23:57Speaker 7: was the reason.
- 23:58Speaker 4: How about this Richard Burdick?
- 24:00Speaker 7: What about him?
- 24:01Speaker 4: Do you have anything to do with you deciding to
- 24:02Speaker 4: take your own life?
- 24:03Speaker 7: In a lot of ways. The biggest mistake I ever
- 24:06Speaker 7: made was leaving Richard. I thought it was smart, real smart.
- 24:10Speaker 7: I was going to show him. Terry said he'd marry me.
- 24:11Speaker 8: He said he was in.
- 24:12Speaker 13: Love with me.
- 24:13Speaker 4: Did he get you started on narcotics?
- 24:15Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 24:17Speaker 7: At first it wasn't so bad. I loved him. Really,
- 24:19Speaker 7: I did. Then when I had to have the fixes,
- 24:22Speaker 7: he changed. Told me he couldn't give it to me anymore.
- 24:25Speaker 7: That I was going to have to pay for it.
- 24:27Speaker 7: I tried to tell him to tell him that I
- 24:29Speaker 7: loved him. That I wanted to be with him. That's
- 24:31Speaker 7: why I went to the hotel to talk it over.
- 24:34Speaker 7: Try to come to an understanding, some kind of an understanding.
- 24:38Speaker 12: Mm-hmm.
- 24:39Speaker 7: He said that he didn't want to have anything to
- 24:41Speaker 7: do with me. That he wanted no.
- 24:43Speaker 13: Part of me anymore.
- 24:44Speaker 7: Said that I was going to have to pay for
- 24:46Speaker 7: the H from now on. I didn't have any way
- 24:48Speaker 7: to pay for it. He said it wasn't any of
- 24:51Speaker 7: his business.
- 24:52Speaker 8: Is he a user?
- 24:53Speaker 14: Yes.
- 24:57Speaker 7: All so stupid, all so stupid.
- 24:59Speaker 14: Ma'am?
- 25:01Speaker 7: The whole thing, I had it real good all the
- 25:03Speaker 7: way around. And then I went ahead and ruined everything,
- 25:06Speaker 7: tore it all down. Even if I'd have killed myself,
- 25:11Speaker 7: it would have been no answer. Not the right answer, anyway.
- 25:15Speaker 7: I know that. I know it real well.
- 25:17Speaker 12: All right.
- 25:18Speaker 4: Can you tell us where you can find this Terry?
- 25:20Speaker 7: You bet I can. I want to see him feel
- 25:23Speaker 7: like I do. I want him to know what it's like.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Will you be willing to meet with him? Make a
- 25:29Speaker 4: buy of narcotics for us?
- 25:31Speaker 7: You name the time, I'll be there. I'll be there
- 25:34Speaker 7: if I have to crawl.
- 25:35Speaker 4: All right. You better get some rest now.
- 25:38Speaker 13: I guess so.
- 25:40Speaker 7: I'm pretty tired. Did you see my mother?
