- 0:00Good morning, everyone. Have you ever wondered where is all my energy?
- 0:04What happened to my energy? It's gone.
- 0:07What happened? Good morning. Welcome to Candid Coach Conversations.
- 0:11I'm Kimberly Boyd, founder of Live Life Fully,
- 0:14and today I have with me the brilliant Teresa Anderson,
- 0:18certified Live Life Fully coach and author of The Table.
- 0:22Good morning, Teresa.
- 0:24Good morning. Hey everybody. ~
- 0:27So excited to see you. I know we've been talking off camera and when we've seen each
- 0:32other lately about energy and woo!
- 0:35Where does our energy go? And so I thought this would be a great conversation
- 0:40~ for our audience, especially here in Houston where it's nine bazillion degrees.
- 0:46I know it's awful.
- 0:47And energy
- 0:48seems to get zapped even quicker.
- 0:51And so I thought, ~ what a topic for a candid coach conversation.
- 0:55So
- 0:55Absolutely. Energy
- 0:57zappers. Ooh.
- 0:59Uh-huh.
- 1:00I'm trying think my most recent energy zapper.
- 1:03If I had to name it, is probably I think recently it's work.
- 1:08Work is my recent energies zapper.
- 1:11And
- 1:11Okay.
- 1:12I need to wrap my mind around maybe getting clear on I think as everybody knows
- 1:18I'm a therapist, and so I was kind of thinking about some things that
- 1:21my coach had said to me about the next five big moves.
- 1:24And I think sometimes I forget because I'm
- 1:27so used to doing work on a daily basis that I forget that I need
- 1:30to create systems for that space as well.
- 1:33And so the coaching really does help come alongside in my mind and remind
- 1:38me that I need to figure out
- 1:40what is is zapping my energy. So do I need to look at my schedule?
- 1:44Do I have too many couples like back to back to back?
- 1:46Like how is my energy being spent even in the therapy room,
- 1:51especially when I spend so much time there?
- 1:53So that would probably be my most recent energy zapper.
- 1:57Yeah.
- 1:58Yes.
- 1:58Okay, so in thinking about those five major moves,
- 2:00so you've identified most recent energy zapper work.
- 2:04And so it sounds like what I was hearing is about scheduling and
- 2:08how you are scheduling your day.
- 2:10And so if you had
- 2:11Right.
- 2:12to make five major moves, give us some examples of what those five major moves would
- 2:16be.
- 2:17Well, definitely that one, getting clear
- 2:18on my schedule and playing Tetris almost.
- 2:20Like, is there a better way to organize this?
- 2:23I like to think of it like that because it was my favorite game as a kid.
- 2:26~
- 2:26Yes.
- 2:27and then I think too, like, am I am I prepared?
- 2:31Am I taking the time maybe on a Sunday to be prepared for the week?
- 2:35Have I like,
- 2:35Beautiful.
- 2:36did I look over the particular clients?
- 2:38Do I have homework already ready to go?
- 2:39Like maybe saved in the chart.
- 2:41Am I doing everything that I actually can do to make the week the most successful?
- 2:45successful that it is. And then I think I would definitely be clear on
- 2:50What do I need to eat that day?
- 2:52What kind of do I need protein?
- 2:54Do I need extra protein on those days?
- 2:56Because I'm getting a little bit worn out by that fifth or sixth client.
- 3:00so I think about that, and then I had a coach one time tell me that I needed
- 3:05to jump up and down if it ever got too too dismal of a space and that that would
- 3:10reset my nervous system. And so maybe getting back to practicing some things like
- 3:15that as well. Yeah.
- 3:16So good.
- 3:17I love it. I love it. I love it.
- 3:18I made some notes here. I love that you talked about taking time
- 3:22on Sunday and thinking about the week ahead.
- 3:24So I love that. I think planning and preparing is so important.
- 3:29I have I personally do a reflection piece,
- 3:31so I reflect over the previous week and then I plan and prepare.
- 3:35Mm-hmm.
- 3:36And I also love Teresa and appreciate how you talked about like,
- 3:39am I prepared for work this week?
- 3:42Do
- 3:42Mm-hmm.
- 3:43I have the homework? Have I
- 3:44Made note of the charts, have I looked at who I have?
- 3:47Yes. And then I think the other thing that popped up for me
- 3:50was planning and preparing for work because that's your energy zapper right now.
- 3:54Yeah.
- 3:55And I don't know about you, but sometimes my work can if I'm
- 3:59not being intentional with my thoughts or my time,
- 4:02my work
- 4:02Mm-hmm.
- 4:03can come into my home, and then my home can go into the work.
- 4:06And so
- 4:07No.
- 4:08have I also planned and prepared home.
- 4:11Okay.
- 4:12Like my my comfort zone of or where I really enjoy being.
- 4:16Have I thought
- 4:17Mm-hmm.
- 4:17about the groceries for the week?
- 4:19I know you talked about nourishing your body for the day,
- 4:21which is so important. and then also if I go to work thinking,
- 4:25~ shoot, I didn't finish the laundry,
- 4:27I still wanted to mow the yard,
- 4:29I there's a dishwasher full of dish that is going to zap my energy.
- 4:32And so deciding
- 4:33Absolutely.
- 4:35where to leave it, and then also for me I
- 4:38Incorporate that incorporate that in my planning and preparing.
- 4:41I love that you talked about jumping up and down because
- 4:45We truly can generate our energy.
- 4:48We can
- 4:49Happy.
- 4:51when I would hit that two, three o'clock lull and then I'd be like,
- 4:56okay, it's coming, I could plan in advance,
- 4:57Mm.
- 4:59move
- 5:00my body, even a quick little stroll up and down the hull or something.
- 5:04Or if you can't do that, jumping up and down to get your body activated again.
- 5:08So yes.
- 5:08Yeah. Get your blood moving.
- 5:10Especially for us 'cause we're sitting the entire time and being
- 5:13at attuned and attentive and empathic.
- 5:16And so we're carrying a presence as well.
- 5:19And so we need to make sure that we're present for ourselves in those moments
- 5:23so that we can carry that presence for others,
- 5:25I think. Yeah. So
- 5:27So if you
- 5:27think about other energy zappers,
- 5:29Teresa, are and maybe you're not experiencing them right now,
- 5:32but hallelujah. ~
- 5:34Yeah.
- 5:34have there been other energy zappers in your life or people that you've even worked
- 5:39with, you're like, that's an energy zapping situation or what have you.
- 5:45~ absolutely.
- 5:46So many things can come against us even mentally.
- 5:48So we can just like what you said,
- 5:50overthinking, over like ruminating on the all of the things that need to
- 5:53be done and what we haven't accomplished and that idea of being able
- 5:58to really like cast down those imaginations and stay present in moments
- 6:02and be really intentional about our presence.
- 6:05Like, am I letting my brain go a million different directions?
- 6:08Am I being cognizant of my phone and that it's going off or that somebody else
- 6:13is trying to get my attention?
- 6:14Am I really securing this time to sit with myself and do the things that
- 6:19I need to do to be present in my day for all of the people that I love
- 6:22and all the people that I'm purposed to help?
- 6:24And I think that's where we have to get really clear sometimes:
- 6:27is what does that look like? And I know you have an amazing morning routine.
- 6:31I'm trying to get there. I'm not quite there yet,
- 6:34but I definitely want to get better about a solid morning routine.
- 6:39Hmm. Well and if you're doing it,
- 6:41you're doing it. Like you're not even trying anymore.
- 6:44You're doing a morning routine,
- 6:46which is amazing. Yes, I do
- 6:46Yep. Right.
- 6:48love my morning routine.
- 6:51And I
- 6:51think the Amen Core Four is actually gonna help me get that piece of
- 6:55it down for sure. Yeah.
- 6:56Yes, yes.
- 7:00talking about energy, I what I've learned one thing I've learned is when I've
- 7:06Have a lack of energy. Yes, stop and look around.
- 7:09What is the situation? Who am I around?
- 7:12But really and truly, and I learned this through Dr.
- 7:15Amen what were the previous 72 hours?
- 7:18Mm.
- 7:19What did I eat? Did I have enough water?
- 7:22Who was I around? What situations or environments was I in?
- 7:28And I could have eaten all the nutritious food,
- 7:30I could have drank all the water,
- 7:32but been in
- 7:34In a very chaotic situation, in 72 hours,
- 7:37my body has processes all and it's like I'm tired.
- 7:41Yes.
- 7:42Energy gone. so really being aware of what took place the previous
- 7:4672 hours and thinking back, because then that gives me information,
- 7:50gives all of us information of
- 7:52Mm-hmm.
- 7:52where we could choose maybe to do things differently,
- 7:54or even when we must go into a chaotic or stressful environment,
- 7:59we can figure out going back to your planning and preparing.
- 8:02How can I plan and prepare? I know I've got to go do this thing or be at this thing,
- 8:07so what can I do?
- 8:08to protect myself and to protect my energy.
- 8:10So super helpful.
- 8:11Right, absolutely. Yeah,
- 8:16those are definitely things that help me and I think getting clearer
- 8:20on what it where is my energy really,
- 8:21really being wasted. And I don't really like the word waste,
- 8:26but in this set in in this sense it's almost your fuel.
- 8:29And if you can look at
- 8:29Sure.
- 8:29it from a position of fuel, then where am I expanding fuel and it's not serving me,
- 8:36you know.
- 8:37And we
- 8:37Yeah.
- 8:38think about fuel, I don't know about y'all,
- 8:40but I think fuel prices are out of this world.
- 8:44And so
- 8:45Ha ha ha.
- 8:46I really want to be aware of how I
- 8:48Ha ha
- 8:49driving my car.
- 8:50Facts. Those are facts one thousand percent.
- 8:53I mean Yes.
- 8:56The other thing that I have realized about myself is is people.
- 9:00I know John Gordon, he wrote The Energy Bus,
- 9:03which I think is a fantastic book.
- 9:05And if you haven't read it, mm,
- 9:07go grab it today.
- 9:07Okay, I'll have to put that on the reading
- 9:09list.
- 9:09It's so good. He talks about in that book,
- 9:12The Energy Bus, it's a story about this man.
- 9:14I won't give all the details. And it's about identifying the energy vampires
- 9:18in your life.
- 9:19that's a good one. Those things.
- 9:20That thing. Sometimes
- 9:25we have to be with energy vampires.
- 9:28And again,
- 9:28Mm.
- 9:29I think deciding in advance, I'm gonna be with this person or these people that
- 9:34and it's draining. And how can I recover quickly?
- 9:37Mm. Yeah, absolutely. I mean sometimes maybe it's a no,
- 9:42right? Maybe it's I love you, but I can't go.
- 9:44And other times maybe it's a, is there a purpose for this and what boundaries
- 9:50can I set for myself to clear my path and make my my decisions mine?
- 9:55Yeah.
- 9:56above it. Yes. You know, Trisa
- 9:58I was talking with a lady recently and she wants to spend time with this other
- 10:02individual in her family. And she said,
- 10:05you know, every time at the end of that get together,
- 10:08I am exhausted. Like I really want to go to my bed and go to sleep.
- 10:13And so we're talking about possibilities.
- 10:15Like what options does she have?
- 10:16And
- 10:17And and what part of it was so exhausting for her.
- 10:20So whenever she was able to identify that,
- 10:22the person that she wants to spend time with is talking about all the woes
- 10:28in her particular life and how hard it is and how sad and how she doesn't
- 10:33see a bright future. And so this lady that I was talking with was like,
- 10:38It's like I just wanna go to sleep after listening to all that.
- 10:41So but she has decided, like she still has to spend time
- 10:45And you know, our dear friend and fellow coach Bri she talks about like
- 10:49how much are you allowing people access to you and how much access like
- 10:54are you willing to give and back and forth.
- 10:57Mm-hmm.
- 10:57So this lady, she finally decided,
- 10:59she was like, I think I'm gonna tell this other person in my family,
- 11:03like, I want to spend time with you.
- 11:05And so, really and truly, if we can talk about all the woe is me within 10 minutes,
- 11:10and then no more. And like putting that time
- 11:12Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 11:15Like let's let's get it out. I don't wanna stop you from sharing and let's
- 11:20put it in this. Get it out there.
- 11:22Okay. And then let's find something else to discuss.
- 11:24I thought, dang, that's so awesome.
- 11:27And that's intentionality,
- 11:28right? You want presence, right?
- 11:30Yeah.
- 11:31So you do the things that you have to do.
- 11:34Of course, like you said, that little bit of time to really kind
- 11:37of decompress and just kind of maybe fill in the group really quickly
- 11:41on the space you've been in and then breathe deeply.
- 11:43Tell me five things you see in the room,
- 11:45four things that you can hear.
- 11:47And come into the space and actually practice pr presence.
- 11:50Yeah. Yeah.
- 11:51Yes.
- 11:53So I would love to know, Teresa,
- 11:55what makes the topic of energy important to you?
- 11:59The topic of energy, it's such a vast topic,
- 12:02right? So when you're telling I'm a I'm a science head,
- 12:04so I love science. When you say energy,
- 12:07my brain goes boop, boop, boop,
- 12:08boop, boop, boop, boop. All these different things come up immediately.
- 12:11But I think
- 12:12All the energy.
- 12:14Yes, the energy between people,
- 12:15the energy that we use to sustain life,
- 12:17the energy of the sun. You know,
- 12:19maybe that's it, that's one to consider is like getting out in the sun,
- 12:22making sure that you're like absorbing it,
- 12:24getting that vitamin D, standing with your feet on the ground,
- 12:27on the grass, and really grounding and taking moments to breathe deeply.
- 12:31I mean, if you can catch the sunset with your feet on the ground and no socks on,
- 12:35touching a tree, ~ you're in there like spin.
- 12:39Your your melatonin is gonna come up.
- 12:40You're gonna sleep probably better that night.
- 12:42especially if you can kind of make those those type of things a practice.
- 12:46So that's another big one for me.
- 12:49But energy is just a vast topic for sure.
- 12:53Love it. And I think too for when I think of you,
- 12:55I think of energy. ~
- 12:58Yeah.
- 12:59I do. Between people, like you said,
- 13:01resetting our circadian rhythm
- 13:05Mm-hmm.
- 13:06and bringing energy. I do. I think of you coming in and when I see you
- 13:11in person and coming in and you're coming in for the hug.
- 13:14Ha ha
- 13:15Is energy and I don't even know
- 13:17Yeah.
- 13:18if you realize like for people sometimes like your hug,
- 13:21I can be in there listening to who knows what,
- 13:23and then you come in with that energy to give a hug and it's like,
- 13:26she just shocked my heart back up.
- 13:28Like here we
- 13:28Yeah.
- 13:29are. I'm here. I love it. So ~ yeah,
- 13:31Yes, yes, yes, absolutely.
- 13:35so I love that we're even
- 13:36And I think it's important helping
- 13:38making people feel good. Like I I love to light up when I see people because
- 13:42I train I can feel the energetic transfer between me and them.
- 13:46If they were having like a bad day,
- 13:48or if they were feeling a little down or they were beating themselves up,
- 13:51just that brief moment of energetic exchange where I lift the frequency,
- 13:55I can feel it touch them.
- 13:59And that to me matters. And so even like that,
- 14:02yeah, I think that's why I practice it,
- 14:04right? And not only does
- 14:06it do that for the room or the space or the energy and kind of like let
- 14:09it breathe a little bit, but it also it touches my heart,
- 14:12makes me feel warm. So yeah, it's dual.
- 14:14Right. I love it.
- 14:16Yeah.
- 14:17Oprah has a sign, I'm I'm assuming she still does,
- 14:20on her studio door that says to everybody coming in,
- 14:23be aware, something along the lines up,
- 14:24I'm probably not gonna get it exactly right.
- 14:26Something along the lines up though,
- 14:28be aware of the energy you bring into this room.
- 14:30And so,
- 14:31Mm.
- 14:32gosh, if we could all be even a little slipper more aware of
- 14:37the energy we're bringing into a room,
- 14:39dang, could our
- 14:40Right.
- 14:41whole energy change.
- 14:43Absolutely.
- 14:44~ there was a practice, this orthodontic ~ orthod the orthodontic doctor
- 14:49I used to work for. He had mirrors by every station and we would have to pick
- 14:54up the mirror and he said, before we get started,
- 14:56we'd have our morning huddle, we'd all sit at our stations,
- 14:59pick up the mirror, and I want you to smile.
- 15:00And I
- 15:01~
- 15:01want you to find and think about something that makes you happy in your life
- 15:04and I want you to smile. And we would do that every morning and it would
- 15:08set the tone for how we were gonna connect with our client or our patient.
- 15:12That.
- 15:13Yeah. So little things like that even we can get creative and find ways that really
- 15:17help us to lift ourselves. Maybe it's having a mirror in the room
- 15:21and asking yourself what you want to smile about today.
- 15:24Yes, I love that. What do you want
- 15:27to smile about today?
- 15:29Yeah.
- 15:30Okay, that's the challenge of today's
- 15:31Okay.
- 15:32candidate coach conversations,
- 15:33everyone for the next week. Look in
- 15:35What?
- 15:36that mirror and say, What do you want to smile about today?
- 15:39Me too. I'm
- 15:40I love it. Yes.
- 15:42getting a sticky note so I can go stick it on my mirror.
- 15:46What do you want to smile about today,
- 15:47guys? Write it with lipstick or
- 15:48a marker that you can clean off.
- 15:49Yes. ~ my gosh.
- 15:52Love it. Fantastic. Well, Teresa,
- 15:55I truly appreciate you being here today and sharing with us your thoughts about
- 16:00energy and then bringing this little nugget of what do you want
- 16:03to smile about today? So good.
- 16:06Absolutely. Smile everybody. Stay cheese.
- 16:08Yeah. Cheers. Thank you.
- 16:10Have a wonderful day today. ~ Bye.
- 16:13Talk to you soon. Bye.
