- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, here he is Sean Means, who's entered the studio
- 0:04Speaker 1: to talk about movie that is opening. Sean is a
- 0:09Speaker 1: editor and reporter at the Salt Lake Tribune. Sltrib dot
- 0:12Speaker 1: com is where you find that he is a film reviewer,
- 0:16Speaker 1: and you can find his reviews collected at movie cricket
- 0:19Speaker 1: dot net.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Good morning, Sean, good morning.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Out of those two movies of the Salt Lake Film Society,
- 0:25Speaker 1: Jojo Rabbit and Isle of Dogs, which did you prefer?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Do you remember how you reviewed? I like them both
- 0:30Speaker 2: quite a lot. I do remember.
- 0:32Speaker 3: That's why I said go see him both.
- 0:35Speaker 2: All right, what do we got today?
- 0:36Speaker 4: We got two movies to talk about this week. We
- 0:39Speaker 4: will start with I Want Your Sex. As the title, does.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Olivia Wilde do anything that's not sexy time anymore? She's
- 0:46Speaker 3: missed sexy Time?
- 0:47Speaker 2: Have you seen the invite? That's what I'm saying.
- 0:50Speaker 4: I mean, it's that's sort of anti sexy time. But
- 0:53Speaker 4: we're talking about sex. Yeah. This is This is by
- 0:56Speaker 4: the director Greg Arocki, who's been making challenging movies about
- 1:00Speaker 4: sexuality amongst teens and twenty somethings for decades now.
- 1:04Speaker 2: A couple of the Doom.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Generation is probably the most famous one. He also did
- 1:08Speaker 4: Smiley Face, which was Anna Faris. Oh yeah comedy. She's
- 1:11Speaker 4: like perpetually stoned throughout the film. This one premiered at
- 1:15Speaker 4: Sundance back in January and got some decent reviews. We
- 1:19Speaker 4: start with an unemployed gen Z guy Elliott, played by
- 1:22Speaker 4: Cooper Hoffman. He's got a girlfriend who ignores him played
- 1:26Speaker 4: by Charlie XCX, and he's got a best friend who
- 1:29Speaker 4: may or may not be lesbian played by Chase Sweet Wonders.
- 1:33Speaker 4: And he just landed a job as an intern for
- 1:35Speaker 4: a famous la artist played by Olivia Wilde. Her art
- 1:38Speaker 4: is all about sexuality, so it's the most surprise to
- 1:41Speaker 4: us that she takes Elliott home and runs him through
- 1:44Speaker 4: the full playbook of SNM activity. He's unsure at first,
- 1:48Speaker 4: but he starts getting into it. And yes, this is
- 1:51Speaker 4: an HR violation.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I would think.
- 1:54Speaker 4: This is all shown in a very neon colored palette
- 1:57Speaker 4: with some very well structured off the wall humor.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I haven't even mentioned.
- 2:01Speaker 4: David Diggs, as the artist's longtime assistant who has seen
- 2:05Speaker 4: the interns come and go. It tells them at one point,
- 2:08Speaker 4: you're not the first you won't be the last for
- 2:11Speaker 4: a movie that's trying to provoke, and this movie is
- 2:13Speaker 4: definitely trying to provoke. It picks some low hanging fruit.
- 2:17Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's satirizing the art world and gen
- 2:20Speaker 4: z prudishness, the idea, the thesis that you know, people
- 2:23Speaker 4: Elliott's age are too busy playing video games and looking
- 2:26Speaker 4: at their phones to go touch grass or better yet,
- 2:29Speaker 4: touch another human being.
- 2:31Speaker 3: There is some truth to the case.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:35Speaker 4: And and for all the sex in this movie, and
- 2:37Speaker 4: there's a lot of sex in this movie, it does
- 2:39Speaker 4: get an R rating.
- 2:41Speaker 2: So I'm not sure how this works anymore.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Yeah, what are the rules?
- 2:44Speaker 4: Yeah, it's pretty good, not great. I give it three stars.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I guess the title I Want Your Sex for all You,
- 2:50Speaker 4: George Michael Michael fans.
- 2:52Speaker 2: That was a really lukewarm three stars. Yes it was.
- 2:55Speaker 2: And it's it's playing at a few theaters around town.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I bet if you think about it, it'll be too scores.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Maybe what have we got all? Right? One?
- 3:03Speaker 4: The one that everybody cares about, spider Man Brand New Day.
- 3:06Speaker 4: This is the fourth movie centered around Tom Hollands version
- 3:10Speaker 4: of Peter Parker aka Spider Man, and that's not counting
- 3:13Speaker 4: the count in America Civil War and the two Avengers
- 3:16Speaker 4: movies that he's been in. Yes, I think I'm at
- 3:20Speaker 4: the point where I can say he's better as Peter
- 3:22Speaker 4: Parker as Spider Man than Toby Maguire or Andrew Garfield.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Honestly, I felt that way probably after the first film.
- 3:29Speaker 4: Yeah, so the last time we saw Peter, he had
- 3:32Speaker 4: he had to have Doctor Strange cast a spell to
- 3:34Speaker 4: save the universe by having everyone forget that Peter and
- 3:37Speaker 4: Spider Everyone includes MJ, his girlfriend, and his.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Best friend Ned.
- 3:44Speaker 4: And and so we see as this movie starts that
- 3:47Speaker 4: Ned and MJ went off to M I T and
- 3:49Speaker 4: that Peter is still in New York fighting crime and
- 3:52Speaker 4: living by himself because the idea that part of the
- 3:56Speaker 4: part of part of the gig of being Spider Man
- 3:58Speaker 4: is you can't have any attachments because you know, look
- 4:00Speaker 4: what happened to Aunt May.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Yeah, well that makes sense.
- 4:04Speaker 4: The new movie happens almost five years after the last one.
- 4:07Speaker 4: There's there's a nice montage that they're getting where we
- 4:10Speaker 4: see Peter watching Ned's social media to sort of keep up,
- 4:14Speaker 4: and how they've gotten all the way through T And
- 4:17Speaker 4: there are some new things in the crime fighting world.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Primarily there's this guy Frank Castle, Vigilante who we all
- 4:24Speaker 4: recognize as the Punisher, played by John Burenthal. And yes
- 4:28Speaker 4: we have Tom holland John Berenthal and Zendea all you
- 4:32Speaker 4: know who are all in the in the Odyssey.
- 4:34Speaker 3: You can see them all over in many ways.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I think they carpooled from one.
- 4:41Speaker 4: And there's a new mystery villain who seems able to
- 4:43Speaker 4: inhabit other people's bodies in succession. And that is all
- 4:47Speaker 4: the plot you're getting out of me. The trailers have
- 4:50Speaker 4: told you there's some crossover from the MCU, especially Mark
- 4:53Speaker 4: Ruffalo appearing as Bruce Banner, and there's more that I'm
- 4:58Speaker 4: not going to give away. I'm not going to I'm
- 5:00Speaker 4: also not going to tell you why Sadie Sink, the
- 5:03Speaker 4: Redhead from Stranger Things, is in this movie other than.
- 5:07Speaker 2: She owns it.
- 5:07Speaker 4: She owns the movie in the same half in the
- 5:10Speaker 4: role she's in that I'm not going to tell you
- 5:12Speaker 4: what is?
- 5:12Speaker 2: You like this, you know what is because you pay
- 5:15Speaker 2: attention to people.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Yes, this is kind of this is a very grounded,
- 5:19Speaker 4: human sized comic book movie, which is we've been kind
- 5:22Speaker 4: of missing in all the multiverse hopping over killed that
- 5:26Speaker 4: we've had in the last two Marvel movies, and Tom
- 5:29Speaker 4: Holland and Zidea actually get some nice emotional scenes in
- 5:32Speaker 4: between the action set pieces. I got to give a
- 5:35Speaker 4: lot of credit to the director here, Destin and Daniel Krettin.
- 5:38Speaker 4: He's the guy that is Shaun Chi and the legend
- 5:41Speaker 4: of the of the Ten Rings it. Yeah, having your
- 5:45Speaker 4: friendly neighborhood Spider Man just saw dealing with mostly New
- 5:49Speaker 4: York problems.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Is a nice is a nice refresher after all the you.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Know, they had a different script which apparently was way
- 5:57Speaker 5: over the top, and Holland sat down with the director,
- 6:03Speaker 5: Daniel Curtin, and said, let's make this a little more intimate. Let's,
- 6:07Speaker 5: you know, let's explore Peter Moore. Let's you know, the relationship.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Right, and I'm talking about how he's going through something. Right,
- 6:15Speaker 4: There's there's some hormone changes, spider hormone changes or something
- 6:19Speaker 4: or other, and he's evolving and it kind of messes
- 6:23Speaker 4: up and we get into the whole We get into
- 6:25Speaker 4: the whole thing about where your web shooters come from. Yeah,
- 6:28Speaker 4: you know, whether you get the organic ones like Toby
- 6:30Speaker 4: McGuire did or the mechanical ones. You know, it's it's
- 6:33Speaker 4: all a thing. Okay, three and a half stars for
- 6:36Speaker 4: Spider Man Brand New Day. And it's of course playing everywhere,
- 6:40Speaker 4: usually in the theaters right next to The Odyssey.
- 6:42Speaker 3: So yeah, I it is the summer of Tom Holland
- 6:46Speaker 3: and Zindia, and I am.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Here for it.
- 6:49Speaker 3: They are so cute, but they are both fantastic actors.
- 6:56Speaker 3: I've been just enjoying them in everything they're doing.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I still haven't seen The Odyssey, but I hear people
- 7:03Speaker 1: talking a lot about John Lake Uzamo.
- 7:05Speaker 4: Yeah, no, he's he's the he's he's really good in
- 7:08Speaker 4: the movie. Samantha Morton is best thing in it. But
- 7:11Speaker 4: but yeah, I mean Zendia and I mean Zendez.
- 7:14Speaker 2: This is you know, we've got We've got Dune coming
- 7:17Speaker 2: coming in December.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I mean the fact that we've had three movies with
- 7:21Speaker 4: just Zendia and Robert Pattinson together so far this year,
- 7:25Speaker 4: and so this will you know, Zenda will have four
- 7:27Speaker 4: movies by the end of the year. At least you
- 7:29Speaker 4: might have something else coming. I don't I don't know
- 7:31Speaker 4: about but uh, and then you know, Holland, you know
- 7:35Speaker 4: he's he's The hard part is that we think of
- 7:38Speaker 4: Peter Parker constantly as a teenager or a twenty something.
- 7:42Speaker 2: What happens when Spider Man actually gets older?
- 7:44Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's that's and and you start to you
- 7:48Speaker 4: start to approach that with this movie, and if there's
- 7:51Speaker 4: another one, then that's you know, that's where the question
- 7:53Speaker 4: is really going to come up, is.
- 7:54Speaker 2: How do you how do you? How do you be
- 7:55Speaker 2: a grown up Spider Man? Yeah?
- 7:57Speaker 5: Well, my favorite Spider Man title right now is all
- 8:00Speaker 5: Spider Man. It takes place at a different universe, and
- 8:02Speaker 5: he's married to MJ and has two kids. Uh uh,
- 8:05Speaker 5: and so it's the whole Juggling family. And you know,
- 8:08Speaker 5: I saw super stuff.
- 8:10Speaker 1: I saw a headline yesterday and I didn't read this
- 8:13Speaker 1: story because but it said I think it said Tom
- 8:15Speaker 1: Holland is has a plan about passing on the role
- 8:20Speaker 1: to another person, and he has somebody in mind for
- 8:24Speaker 1: that apparently, Okay, but I didn't read it to find out,
- 8:27Speaker 1: and I don't know if anybody knows anything about it.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Just but he also said that he's he's willing to
- 8:32Speaker 5: come back anytime that they want him.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so but he knows he'll have to pass it along.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Yeah, right, I mean we'll get well, we may get
- 8:40Speaker 4: the live action version of Miles Morales eventually, I hope so,
- 8:43Speaker 4: but well, I don't know because I'm so I so
- 8:46Speaker 4: much love the Spider Verse animated version, and I don't
- 8:50Speaker 4: want I don't want another bad live action version.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Of a great animated work. You know. I don't need
- 8:56Speaker 2: another Moana here, you know. So there you go. Anything
- 9:01Speaker 2: opening up next week?
- 9:02Speaker 4: Next week, the Doldrums of August are starting. Yes, the
- 9:05Speaker 4: biggest studio movie next week is It is called One
- 9:08Speaker 4: Night Only. It's a romantic comedy with Callum Turner and
- 9:11Speaker 4: Monica Barbarrow.
- 9:14Speaker 2: You may know you remember her as playing.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Joan Biez in that bog Dylen movie She's Good Scott
- 9:20Speaker 4: Oscar nomination. And then the other one next week is
- 9:23Speaker 4: Cookie Queens, which is a documentary about this was a Sunday.
- 9:27Speaker 4: There was a Sundance, girls selling girls Scott cookies. One
- 9:29Speaker 4: of the interesting parts of this is that the two
- 9:31Speaker 4: of the executive producers are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,
- 9:36Speaker 4: Harry and Meghan.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Wow, but I kind.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Of remember when you interview interviewed reviewed this at Sundance
- 9:42Speaker 3: and you said.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I haven't seen it.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Oh you haven't no, Oh okay, yeah it was another reviewer,
- 9:47Speaker 3: somebody I read reviews. Yeah, that that was, like, you
- 9:51Speaker 3: know what, set that part of it aside. And it's
- 9:53Speaker 3: pretty good if you forget about the word. The word
- 9:55Speaker 3: I keep hearing from people is adorable. Yeah, adorable, and
- 9:59Speaker 3: it's right to ge which how often do you see
- 10:01Speaker 3: that anymore?
- 10:01Speaker 2: Not often? Yeah, it's girl scouts. What do you expect?
- 10:04Speaker 2: I hope?
- 10:04Speaker 1: So all right, Sean means movie cricket dot net, sl
- 10:09Speaker 1: trip dot com.
