- 0:00Speaker 1: On the road to success. Within that journey, there are hurdles,
- 0:06Speaker 1: and if you understand that and you trust that that
- 0:11Speaker 1: is part of the process, then when those hurdles or
- 0:17Speaker 1: roadblocks arrive, you're less apt to stop, You're less resistant,
- 0:25Speaker 1: You're willing to lean in and trust that you'll move
- 0:31Speaker 1: through it.
- 0:46Speaker 2: What is going on? Emily? A body here bringing you
- 0:48Speaker 2: Episode one forty seven of Hurdle, a wellness focused podcast,
- 0:53Speaker 2: wars it down with inspiring individuals to talk about their
- 0:56Speaker 2: big wines, tough moments, and everything in between. On the show,
- 1:00Speaker 2: you can expect vulnerability, motivation, and candid discussions with everyone
- 1:05Speaker 2: from top athletes and CEOs to aspiring entrepreneurs on what
- 1:09Speaker 2: it really takes to follow your passions. My mission is
- 1:12Speaker 2: simple to inspire you to be your best self, move
- 1:16Speaker 2: with intention, and have some fun along the way. Today
- 1:20Speaker 2: I am chatting with Tunday Oyenain Peloton instructor and seriously,
- 1:26Speaker 2: just like the brightest light and vibe of maybe all time,
- 1:32Speaker 2: Dundee has certainly dealt with her fair share of hurdles,
- 1:37Speaker 2: from a dramatic weight loss and not getting her job
- 1:40Speaker 2: at Peloton after her first audition, to the loss of
- 1:45Speaker 2: her brother and both of her parents. Her resiliency is
- 1:49Speaker 2: admirable and I really mean this. I know on the
- 1:52Speaker 2: show we talk about tough stuff often, but to hear
- 1:57Speaker 2: someone who has navigated so much loss have such a
- 2:04Speaker 2: dynamic and beautiful outlook and perspective, it just it makes
- 2:08Speaker 2: me feel really grateful for what I have and puts
- 2:13Speaker 2: life in perspective, and I hope that it does the
- 2:15Speaker 2: same for you as well. Tunday also shares today about
- 2:19Speaker 2: what her career was like before finding Peloton, and I
- 2:22Speaker 2: really enjoy how she expands upon the idea that it's
- 2:24Speaker 2: okay to have one dream and realize that it's okay
- 2:28Speaker 2: to move in different directions and grow and come to
- 2:32Speaker 2: want different things as time goes on. I do want
- 2:36Speaker 2: to thank Tune today's sponsor at Optimum Nutrition for setting
- 2:39Speaker 2: up this discussion, as you will hear her mention in

- 4:20Speaker 2: That interview coming soon to the feed. But I am
- 4:24Speaker 2: loving her book. I had the most fun talking to her,
- 4:28Speaker 2: and I cannot wait to check about it all with you.

- 4:35Speaker 2: Hurdle over on social media. It's over at Hurdle Podcasts
- 4:38Speaker 2: and I am over at Emily a Body. And with that,
- 4:43Speaker 2: let's get to hurdling. Today. I am talking with Tunday
- 4:53Speaker 2: Oyna and she is a peloton instructor and all around
- 4:58Speaker 2: amazing person. Today doing today, I'm doing great.
- 5:02Speaker 3: How are you?
- 5:03Speaker 2: I am great. I'm really excited for this conversation with
- 5:08Speaker 2: you because you and I and you don't know this yet,
- 5:11Speaker 2: which is a little creepy that I guess I know
- 5:13Speaker 2: this and you don't know this. But we have a
- 5:15Speaker 2: lot in common.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Okay, I love it. Talk to man. Let you have
- 5:20Speaker 3: my attention.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Okay, you have my attention. I also, at one point
- 5:25Speaker 2: in my life was hovering around two hundred pounds in
- 5:28Speaker 2: a size eighteen.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Wow.
- 5:31Speaker 2: So we have this in common. We also have like
- 5:35Speaker 2: like a clothes trying on saga in common that like
- 5:39Speaker 2: completely made us reevaluate what the hell we were doing.
- 5:42Speaker 2: So I don't want to give away your story, but
- 5:48Speaker 2: I need you to know, as we talked today that
- 5:51Speaker 2: I get where you're coming from.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I'm like, I can go ahead and just pack up
- 5:54Speaker 1: my microphone. There's nothing left for me to say. I mean,
- 5:56Speaker 1: that's pretty much pretty much the story in a nutshell.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Not at all, not at all. Tune day. Where do
- 6:02Speaker 2: you hail from? Kick me off from the beginning.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I am first generation American descendant of two Nigerians, Festus
- 6:12Speaker 1: and Veronica O and A.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I'm originally from Houston, Texas.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I was talking with a friend the other day and
- 6:17Speaker 1: I was like, I don't remember what age I was
- 6:19Speaker 1: when I left left Houston because I believe I had
- 6:21Speaker 1: a fake idea at the time, and so I don't remember.
- 6:23Speaker 1: I don't remember what my real age was when I
- 6:25Speaker 1: moved from Houston to LA, but I know I was
- 6:27Speaker 1: in LA for twelve years and then I moved to
- 6:31Speaker 1: New York about a year and a half ago, almost
- 6:33Speaker 1: two years ago.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Now, wow, big big life pivot New York from LA
- 6:40Speaker 2: and then before that from Texas. Growing up. Talk to
- 6:43Speaker 2: me about what your lifestyle was like, were you active
- 6:47Speaker 2: at all? Talk to me about like your like family dynamic.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Give me some details.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you know our VP of fitness, Robin Rizon,
- 6:59Speaker 1: she always says that she would you know, she she
- 7:02Speaker 1: didn't have a fit, fitness or athletic background, and she
- 7:04Speaker 1: always says that she was allergic to fitness. Like I
- 7:08Speaker 1: always say, I wasn't even like I was. I didn't
- 7:11Speaker 1: even know what it was like. I didn't even know
- 7:12Speaker 1: what it was to be active, Like, had zero concept
- 7:16Speaker 1: of it. All of my brothers were like super star athletes,
- 7:20Speaker 1: and so you know, I have two older brothers. And
- 7:23Speaker 1: so whether it was me going into middle school or
- 7:26Speaker 1: into high school, the coaches would see that I was
- 7:29Speaker 1: an O nane and get really excited thinking that I
- 7:32Speaker 1: was going to be like another superstar athlete. And like
- 7:34Speaker 1: every single day, first day of gym, I'd have to
- 7:36Speaker 1: be like, no, I don't have the gene. Like it's
- 7:38Speaker 1: not that that part wasn't in me. I was always
- 7:41Speaker 1: in choire. I was always the kid who I was
- 7:44Speaker 1: into other arts. I liked to draw, I liked to sing,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and I'll share this later, but I always say that,
- 7:51Speaker 1: you know, fitness found me. It wasn't at all a goal.
- 7:56Speaker 1: It wasn't even something that I knew to aspire towards
- 8:00Speaker 1: or or honestly even new to dream about.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Yeah, growing up obviously not a strong tie to fitness,
- 8:08Speaker 2: not a lot of passion to fitness. Talk to me
- 8:11Speaker 2: a little bit then. I know from my reading and
- 8:14Speaker 2: listening to your story that around thirteen you were hovering
- 8:18Speaker 2: in that two hundred area, which is the same for me.
- 8:21Speaker 2: So talk to me, wait wise, about how you felt
- 8:24Speaker 2: coming into your own as a woman, as at that
- 8:27Speaker 2: time society would say anyway, a little bit of a
- 8:30Speaker 2: bigger girl, right.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Well, you know, you know, as I reflect now, it's like,
- 8:35Speaker 1: it's not even about the number, because I think that
- 8:37Speaker 1: someone could be X amount of you know, pounds and
- 8:42Speaker 1: still hold themselves, hold themselves differently, if that makes sense.
- 8:48Speaker 1: So it was less about the number and more so
- 8:51Speaker 1: about the way that I felt. So when I was
- 8:54Speaker 1: two hundred pounds, I happened to feel not confident. When
- 8:59Speaker 1: I was two hundred pounds, I happen to not have
- 9:03Speaker 1: a sense of what my power was and my place
- 9:06Speaker 1: was and to be, you know, at such a young
- 9:09Speaker 1: age and feel so different, to feel like such outcasts
- 9:16Speaker 1: maybe a heavy word, but to feel so different from
- 9:18Speaker 1: other people was part of the catalyst. At the end
- 9:24Speaker 1: of the day, I did it for me. I think
- 9:25Speaker 1: that I always say to anybody who's going through their
- 9:28Speaker 1: own wellness journey that you have to want to do
- 9:30Speaker 1: it for you. You can lose weight, but if you're
- 9:33Speaker 1: doing it for other people or for something else, once
- 9:36Speaker 1: that person's not in your life anymore, or you know,
- 9:40Speaker 1: let's say you're doing it for a goal, you want
- 9:41Speaker 1: to look good for a party or for whatever, like
- 9:43Speaker 1: once those life events, once these things come and pass,
- 9:47Speaker 1: then if it's not for you, you resort back to
- 9:51Speaker 1: where you came from. And so ultimately, when you decide
- 9:55Speaker 1: to make the forever change, it has to be for you.
- 9:58Speaker 3: And the.
- 10:00Speaker 1: The dress story that you kind of alluded to is
- 10:04Speaker 1: I was actually supposed to be a bridesmaid in my
- 10:08Speaker 1: aunt's wedding, and you know, to make a long story short,
- 10:13Speaker 1: go to the bridle store with my mom and my aunt.
- 10:16Speaker 3: It's a blue dress.
- 10:17Speaker 1: It's a really hideously ugly bad not cute, not good,
- 10:21Speaker 1: very bad. Dress, and I'm supposed to wear this dress.
- 10:24Speaker 1: And we get to the dress door and I wear
- 10:26Speaker 1: sites eighteen at the time. They don't make the dress
- 10:28Speaker 1: in my size. My aunt then offers to buy a
- 10:33Speaker 1: different blue dress that is way more beautiful. It's also
- 10:37Speaker 1: way more expensive, and she says she's going to buy it.
- 10:39Speaker 1: So my mom's like hitting me at my leg saying, yes,
- 10:42Speaker 1: take this dress that she's offering you. And I said no.
- 10:44Speaker 1: And when my mom said, why don't you want to
- 10:47Speaker 1: wear that dress? I said, because if I'm in the
- 10:50Speaker 1: other dress, if I'm in a different dress, everybody's going
- 10:52Speaker 1: to know that I was the big girl that couldn't
- 10:54Speaker 1: fit into the same dress as everyone else. And so
- 10:57Speaker 1: I remember I was, and we were in the dressing room.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I was now just with my mother, and my mom
- 11:03Speaker 1: said to me, she goes, well, if this, if it
- 11:05Speaker 1: bothers you that much, you're going to need to make
- 11:08Speaker 1: a change. And for me, it was the first time
- 11:11Speaker 1: that my mom that was for me, that was my
- 11:13Speaker 1: mother's way of acknowledging it. You know, my mom and
- 11:15Speaker 1: dad always told me I was so beautiful, so beautiful,
- 11:17Speaker 1: so beautiful, and so you know, part of me thought Okay,
- 11:20Speaker 1: well maybe the kids at my school, maybe they're all
- 11:22Speaker 1: just crazy, or maybe the people that are making fun
- 11:23Speaker 1: of me, they're all just crazy. And you know, for
- 11:27Speaker 1: my mother to say that for me, just her saying,
- 11:32Speaker 1: if this is something, if this is the way that
- 11:34Speaker 1: you feel, then you need to make a change. That
- 11:36Speaker 1: was her way of acknowledging it. And that almost for me,
- 11:39Speaker 1: that made me feel like it was real. It made
- 11:41Speaker 1: me feel like it was real. And so I remember
- 11:43Speaker 1: I just fell on the floor and I was crying
- 11:44Speaker 1: in her lap, and you know, that was like literally
- 11:47Speaker 1: like pretty much the next day. I mean, I'm a
- 11:50Speaker 1: kid and I have no money here, no job. So
- 11:54Speaker 1: I decided that I was going to somehow put forty
- 12:01Speaker 1: I think it was forty four dollars and like ninety
- 12:02Speaker 1: eight cents my gym membership for the gym I was
- 12:05Speaker 1: going to at the time, I was like, I'm going
- 12:06Speaker 1: to find a way to get that amount of money
- 12:08Speaker 1: every month. And so I signed up for gym membership
- 12:11Speaker 1: and I walked I would say, like a good mile
- 12:13Speaker 1: and a half every day to the gym, worked out,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and then walked another mile and a half home and
- 12:19Speaker 1: just started to really get a better understanding of the
- 12:25Speaker 1: food and nutrition and the way that the body fuels
- 12:33Speaker 1: you know, the way that your body is used to
- 12:35Speaker 1: really fuel you. That makes sense.
- 12:37Speaker 2: When you decided to make this change, did you have
- 12:42Speaker 2: any specific goal at the beginning. Was it just to
- 12:46Speaker 2: move more? Was it to learn more about food? Was
- 12:48Speaker 2: it actually I want to lose x amount of pounds?
- 12:51Speaker 2: Like where was your head at at that time?
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yeah? When I first sought out on this journey, and
- 12:58Speaker 1: I always like to say, it's a forever because it's
- 13:00Speaker 1: not like, oh, you lost the weight.
- 13:01Speaker 3: And you feel good and.
- 13:03Speaker 1: You wear in the pants or whatever the goal was,
- 13:06Speaker 1: and then now you live, you know, this life that
- 13:10Speaker 1: you've imagined, and skinny people walk around just jumping for
- 13:12Speaker 1: joy like it's I always say it's a forever journey.
- 13:16Speaker 3: It's like not something that ends.
- 13:19Speaker 1: And I set out to lose seventy pounds and I
- 13:22Speaker 1: did that, and ultimately this quest has been so much
- 13:26Speaker 1: more about what I've gained than what I've lost. And
- 13:33Speaker 1: I set out to lose weight.
- 13:35Speaker 3: I did that.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I lost seventy pounds, but what I gained ultimately was
- 13:38Speaker 1: so much more. I gained a sense of purpose, I
- 13:41Speaker 1: gained confidence, I gained strength. Like I love feeling strong.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I love putting weights in my hands and feeling strong.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Did you have a CrossFit face? Oh, yeah, for sure.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I did cross it for like four years. I was
- 13:52Speaker 1: crazy about it, and then like, oh, the only thing
- 13:55Speaker 1: that existed in the world was CrossFit. And then you know,
- 13:59Speaker 1: you just like any like anything, you kind of you know,
- 14:02Speaker 1: find other things that that pull you and found cycling.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Found cycling and haven't looked vaccines and so yeah, I
- 14:09Speaker 1: found a sense of strength, I found a sense of confidence.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I found or I rather, I gained friendships. I gained
- 14:20Speaker 1: so much. Yes, I lost something. I lost one thing,
- 14:22Speaker 1: I lost weight. Ultimately, I gained so many things, and
- 14:27Speaker 1: I you know, when I first started, I was like
- 14:30Speaker 1: stepping on the scale, like you know, weekly weigh ins
- 14:34Speaker 1: turned into like two times a week. I would weigh in,
- 14:36Speaker 1: and then it was just like this thing where you
- 14:38Speaker 1: would feel so good about yourself. Like I would be
- 14:41Speaker 1: eating great and working out and doing all the things
- 14:44Speaker 1: that people tell you're supposed to do right, and I'd
- 14:45Speaker 1: jump on the scale and the scale would say that
- 14:47Speaker 1: I was losing weight. I'd feel amazing, And then you know,
- 14:51Speaker 1: another few days or another week would go by and
- 14:53Speaker 1: I felt like I was, you know, crushing it even more,
- 14:55Speaker 1: eating even cleaner, working out even more aggressively. And then
- 14:58Speaker 1: I'd step on the scale and the scale would say
- 15:00Speaker 1: the opposite. It would say that I was going backwards,
- 15:03Speaker 1: going in the wrong direction. And so one day finally
- 15:05Speaker 1: I said, I'm not going to let this thing rule me,
- 15:08Speaker 1: like this thing rules my energy. I feel really good
- 15:11Speaker 1: about the way that I'm feeling from my workouts, I
- 15:13Speaker 1: feel really good about the way that I feel from
- 15:17Speaker 1: eating clean and the supplements that I'm putting in my body.
- 15:20Speaker 1: And then I jump on this scale and it tells
- 15:23Speaker 1: me something else, and it completely alters and shifts my energy.
- 15:27Speaker 1: And so that was really the turning point for me.
- 15:31Speaker 1: So I set out to lose weight, and then somewhere
- 15:35Speaker 1: between there and now, I decided that I wanted to
- 15:39Speaker 1: go based on My goal is to feel a certain way,
- 15:43Speaker 1: like the scale or a number can't take that away
- 15:46Speaker 1: from me. I want to feel strong, I want to
- 15:49Speaker 1: feel healthy, I want to feel active.
- 15:51Speaker 3: I get to control that.
- 15:53Speaker 1: So if I want to feel active, I say, Tunic,
- 15:55Speaker 1: get up, go for a run, Tunic, get up, jump
- 15:57Speaker 1: on this bike, like I can control that versus the scale, Like,
- 16:01Speaker 1: it's not necessarily something that there's EPs and folows, there's
- 16:03Speaker 1: it's not necessarily something that I can could control.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Yeah, And I mean the behavior that you uh just
- 16:10Speaker 2: kind of articulated definitely something that a lot of people
- 16:14Speaker 2: can relate to and have totally been there for someone
- 16:18Speaker 2: who may be in the midst of similar transformation right now,
- 16:22Speaker 2: and they too find themselves maybe getting in even a
- 16:25Speaker 2: little obsessive with the scale, obsessive with eating clean, obsessive
- 16:29Speaker 2: with working out all the time. What is it that
- 16:32Speaker 2: you tell them to try to reel it in a
- 16:34Speaker 2: little bit.
- 16:37Speaker 1: I always say, find something that you enjoy doing. When
- 16:42Speaker 1: you obsess over something, when you become manic about something,
- 16:46Speaker 1: it stems, I believe from a feeling of I.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Have to I have to, I have to I have
- 16:51Speaker 3: to versus I want to, you know.
- 16:55Speaker 1: And so when you find workouts or activities that you
- 17:00Speaker 1: want to do, you want to.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Show up for them. You don't feel like you have
- 17:06Speaker 3: to show up for it.
- 17:09Speaker 1: So I always say to people like, I'm like, if
- 17:11Speaker 1: you don't like running, I'm never gonna recommend that you
- 17:13Speaker 1: sign up for the marathon tomorrow. Eventually you may fall
- 17:15Speaker 1: in love with running.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Maybe right.
- 17:17Speaker 1: But if you don't like running, maybe you like dancing.
- 17:19Speaker 1: If you don't like dancing, maybe you like cycling. If
- 17:21Speaker 1: you don't like cycling, maybe you like you know, strength training.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I think the beauty of Peloton is that Peloton offers,
- 17:27Speaker 1: you know, such a wide range of modalities and activities
- 17:32Speaker 1: that you can do. I'm actually an optimum nutrition athlete,
- 17:37Speaker 1: and I actually what I love so much about the
- 17:41Speaker 1: Optimum nutrition line and the product is that it helps
- 17:44Speaker 1: to fuel me and make me feel really restored and
- 17:48Speaker 1: recovered so that I can go back into whatever said
- 17:51Speaker 1: activity is that I love to do.
- 17:52Speaker 3: I can show up with my A game mom the
- 17:54Speaker 3: next day.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to talk to you
- 18:05Speaker 2: about baron Fig. Studies have shown that journaling is an
- 18:09Speaker 2: awesome way to improve your mental wellness, but sometimes you
- 18:13Speaker 2: just don't know where to start. Baron Fig has got
- 18:16Speaker 2: you covered. Every morning, when I wake up, the first
- 18:19Speaker 2: thing I do, after brushing my teeth and making my
- 18:21Speaker 2: bed is getting back onto bed, not into it, onto it,
- 18:26Speaker 2: and journaling for ten minutes with my Baron Fig journal.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I love the way the journal feels, and I just

- 20:28Speaker 2: There's a really great and beautiful thing in the opportunity
- 20:32Speaker 2: of diversifying your movement, your fitness, whatever it is that
- 20:37Speaker 2: you do to move your body. I mean, I'm sure
- 20:41Speaker 2: during and along your journey as it still continues. Today,
- 20:45Speaker 2: we talked about CrossFit, we talked about going to the gym.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Obviously now you're heavy into spin, but there's been so
- 20:50Speaker 2: many different iterations of how you move your body.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think that's the that's kind of the
- 20:56Speaker 1: thing too. And I was, you know, I alluded to
- 20:58Speaker 1: this with the CrossFit thing, is like I loved it.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I loved it, I loved it, and then one day
- 21:01Speaker 1: I was just like sick of it, you know, And
- 21:04Speaker 1: so and that's no shade at all. To anybody who
- 21:06Speaker 1: who crossfits or loves it, But for me, it was
- 21:10Speaker 1: about finding something that something that just like made my
- 21:15Speaker 1: spirit feel good, and cycling makes my spirit feel good.
- 21:19Speaker 1: It's not to say that, you know, I don't still
- 21:21Speaker 1: lift weights, Absolutely absolutely I do. I'm actually one of
- 21:24Speaker 1: our bike boot camp instructors for Peloton, and so strength
- 21:27Speaker 1: training is also part of my.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Modality as well.
- 21:31Speaker 1: But I think that there is something to kind of
- 21:34Speaker 1: just not only from a smart training perspective to mix
- 21:37Speaker 1: things up, but just for your mental state as well.
- 21:40Speaker 1: I think sometimes you get into this repetition and it
- 21:44Speaker 1: becomes like this daunting thing, like you know exactly what
- 21:47Speaker 1: you're going to do and how it's going to feel.
- 21:49Speaker 1: And I think there's just something to switching it up
- 21:52Speaker 1: to to make it feel interesting and make it feel fun.
- 21:54Speaker 1: If it's not fun, then I don't want to do it.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Like I I work out a lot.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I spend too much time working out to not actually
- 22:03Speaker 1: enjoy the process of it.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I can totally relate to that. So I
- 22:08Speaker 2: know you mentioned your nutrition. I definitely want to get
- 22:10Speaker 2: there in a minute. But we keep kind of dancing
- 22:13Speaker 2: around this idea of like but then I found spin
- 22:16Speaker 2: and it was my Goldilocks thing. So talk to me
- 22:18Speaker 2: about what your experience was with finding spin and if
- 22:23Speaker 2: you even remember what your first spin class was really like,
- 22:27Speaker 2: Oh girl.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I can paint that. We can spend the next forty
- 22:30Speaker 1: five minutes. I can paint a pical picture of the air.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Uh so yeah, no, I it found me. So I
- 22:37Speaker 1: you know, I was in Texas, started working out, started to,
- 22:41Speaker 1: you know, feel comfortable, started to feel confident. I've always
- 22:44Speaker 1: been an outgoing person, but you know, even when I
- 22:47Speaker 1: was heavier, I was this. I was the most introverted,
- 22:50Speaker 1: outgoing person. I don't even know if that's a thing,
- 22:51Speaker 1: but I was. I was introverted in that I didn't
- 22:54Speaker 1: want to bring attention to me. I didn't want to
- 22:55Speaker 1: bring attention to me because I felt like if people
- 22:58Speaker 1: placed it, if there was a tensional meeting, people would
- 23:00Speaker 1: notice my size. For example, if I laughed, if I
- 23:03Speaker 1: was if someone if we were in a room and
- 23:05Speaker 1: someone told a joke, I would never laugh too loud
- 23:08Speaker 1: because if I laughed loud, people would notice I was there.
- 23:11Speaker 1: And if they noticed that I was there in the room,
- 23:12Speaker 1: they would notice how big I was. Anybody who's ever
- 23:15Speaker 1: taken any of my classes. You know that I can't
- 23:17Speaker 1: sit still like I'm Shaki on a bike, if you will.
- 23:21Speaker 3: And I.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Dance a lot now, and I wanted to dance then,
- 23:25Speaker 1: Like when I went to parties or gatherings, I wanted to.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Be the person in the middle of the dance for dancing.
- 23:31Speaker 1: But I didn't want to get up and do that
- 23:33Speaker 1: because I didn't want people to see me, because if
- 23:34Speaker 1: they saw me, they'd notice my size.
- 23:36Speaker 3: And so it was almost with like I want to say,
- 23:39Speaker 3: with each.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Workout, with each pound that I'd lost, it was almost
- 23:46Speaker 1: like I unraveled a layer of confidence, a layer of
- 23:50Speaker 1: like being so okay to step into my own step
- 23:54Speaker 1: into myself. I was already there, Like I didn't create
- 23:57Speaker 1: this person that wasn't there. I just became okay with
- 24:01Speaker 1: letting everyone see her. And so I moved to La
- 24:07Speaker 1: to become or to pursue my career as a makeup artist.
- 24:13Speaker 1: And you know, I become very successful in my own writing,
- 24:18Speaker 1: in my in my field. I was, you know, working
- 24:21Speaker 1: for my dream company. I was doing my dream job.
- 24:26Speaker 1: I can't see me right now, but I say dreaming
- 24:28Speaker 1: quotes because it was what I thought that I wanted.
- 24:30Speaker 3: It was what I dreamt of and I was doing it.
- 24:33Speaker 3: And when I was doing the job, I was like,
- 24:35Speaker 3: I don't really like this job.
- 24:38Speaker 1: But it was like a thing I couldn't really say
- 24:39Speaker 1: out loud because I'd worked so damn hard to get there,
- 24:42Speaker 1: and once I'd gotten there, it was almost like this
- 24:44Speaker 1: feeling of like, man, am I ungrateful?
- 24:47Speaker 3: I asked for this and I'm here now and I'm
- 24:50Speaker 3: not happy. It doesn't feel good.
- 24:52Speaker 1: And so you know, I I was booked for a
- 24:57Speaker 1: gig in New York and so I fly from LA
- 25:01Speaker 1: to New York. I get to the hotel. The hotel like,
- 25:03Speaker 1: the gym is bootleg. There's really no other way to
- 25:06Speaker 1: say it. The gym is just bootleg. Like I go
- 25:07Speaker 1: down there, there's nothing to do unless I was gonna
- 25:10Speaker 1: do jumping jacksonplaces.
- 25:10Speaker 3: I was like, there's just nothing to do down here.
- 25:12Speaker 1: So I said, let me go to, you know, a studio.
- 25:18Speaker 1: And so I'd been hearing about cycling studios. Had never
- 25:21Speaker 1: taken like an indoor cycling experience class thing, but people
- 25:25Speaker 1: have been talking about it.
- 25:26Speaker 3: At the time. This was a few years ago now,
- 25:28Speaker 3: and so I said, you know, I'll go and take
- 25:30Speaker 3: one of the classes.
- 25:30Speaker 1: So by the time I purchase my seat in class,
- 25:36Speaker 1: purchase my water bottle, my shoes, my towel, whatever, I'm
- 25:39Speaker 1: forty dollars deep.
- 25:40Speaker 3: This is a forty five minute class. Emily, Oh my god.
- 25:43Speaker 3: So i sit down.
- 25:44Speaker 1: On the bike and I'm thinking, like, I'm angry with myself.
- 25:48Speaker 1: I'm like, tune day, why did you just spend forty
- 25:51Speaker 1: dollars to work out? And so I'm honestly like, I'm
- 25:55Speaker 1: resenting the class. Before the class even starts, the class
- 25:58Speaker 1: like the lights dim the instructor comes in. People start screaming.
- 26:02Speaker 1: I have like imposter syndrome. I have no idea what's happening.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Three minutes into the class, I'm in a state of euphoria.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I leave the class that day, it's snowing outside of
- 26:12Speaker 1: New York. I noticed that I'm not walking, but I
- 26:15Speaker 1: noticed that I'm skipping back to my hotel room.
- 26:19Speaker 2: I was like, are you magically floating somehow? You know what?
- 26:22Speaker 1: Honestly, if you told me that I was levitating, I
- 26:24Speaker 1: would believe you because I don't even I don't remember
- 26:26Speaker 1: how I got from point A to point B.
- 26:27Speaker 3: But I'm levitating.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Then now back to my hotel room, and in a
- 26:33Speaker 1: matter of seconds, I saw my life's trajectory pass in
- 26:40Speaker 1: front of me.
- 26:41Speaker 3: I always when I tell this story, it was.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Like a blue light, A blue wave rushed through my
- 26:47Speaker 1: body and I could see my life. I knew in
- 26:50Speaker 1: that moment, after taking my first cycling class, I knew
- 26:55Speaker 1: that I would be cycling for the rest of my life.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Not only did I know that I would be cycling
- 27:00Speaker 1: for the rest of my life, I knew that I
- 27:03Speaker 1: would be teaching it. Not only did I know that
- 27:06Speaker 1: I would be teaching it, but I knew that I
- 27:08Speaker 1: would be teaching it on the.
- 27:10Speaker 3: World's biggest platform.
- 27:12Speaker 1: I honestly can't even say that I knew what peloton
- 27:14Speaker 1: was at the time, but I knew that I would
- 27:16Speaker 1: be cycling. I knew that I would be teaching it,
- 27:19Speaker 1: and I knew that I'd be teaching it on the
- 27:20Speaker 1: world's biggest platform. And I knew that the world would
- 27:23Speaker 1: know my name for it.
- 27:24Speaker 3: I was sure of it.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I've never till this day, I've never been as sure
- 27:27Speaker 1: about any one thing in my entire life. And so
- 27:31Speaker 1: I finished this New York trip out I head back
- 27:35Speaker 1: to La I'm at a dinner party with my best friends.
- 27:38Speaker 1: We're all just talking about whatever, and I tell them,
- 27:41Speaker 1: I say, hey, guys, and mind you. They know how
- 27:43Speaker 1: hard I've worked in my cosmetic career to be where
- 27:47Speaker 1: I was. And I said, guys, I think I want
- 27:51Speaker 1: to quit my job and become a cycling instructor. And
- 27:55Speaker 1: I'm thinking to myself. It was almost that thing of like,
- 27:57Speaker 1: you know, the stuff that you should only think in
- 27:59Speaker 1: your head. You should tell people out loud because they're
- 28:00Speaker 1: going to judge you. So I said it out loud,
- 28:03Speaker 1: and I was just like waiting for them to call
- 28:05Speaker 1: me crazy or whatever.
- 28:06Speaker 3: And they start crying. I'm crying. They start crying. I
- 28:09Speaker 3: don't cry. I don't ever cry.
- 28:11Speaker 1: They're crying, and I said, why are you guys crying?
- 28:15Speaker 1: They're like, we're crying because we've never heard you say
- 28:19Speaker 1: anything that sounded so exact. What you're saying makes so
- 28:23Speaker 1: much sense. I said, guys, you've never even seen me
- 28:25Speaker 1: do it before. I've only seen me do it one time.
- 28:28Speaker 1: They said to day, I don't know why, but that
- 28:30Speaker 1: that sounds right for you. And so, you know, to
- 28:34Speaker 1: kind of wrap this story up, it was a matter
- 28:37Speaker 1: of imposter syndrome that set and next I think probably
- 28:41Speaker 1: six to eight months past where my friends are like, Tunday,
- 28:44Speaker 1: when are you going to go and get certified so
- 28:45Speaker 1: you can teach? When are you going to get certified
- 28:47Speaker 1: and teach? And I just kept putting it off because
- 28:49Speaker 1: I was like, Who's going to be motivated or inspired
- 28:51Speaker 1: by me? I can't get up and get on a
- 28:54Speaker 1: bike with my in my sports bra in front of people, Like,
- 28:57Speaker 1: Who's going to be motivated by me? Saying anything? Like
- 29:00Speaker 1: all these things that I told myself I couldn't.
- 29:02Speaker 3: I couldn't. I couldn't.
- 29:03Speaker 1: And so because I have really really great, amazing, wonderful,
- 29:07Speaker 1: wonderfully supportive friends, they kept pushing me. So finally I
- 29:10Speaker 1: went and got certification. Then I go get the certification,
- 29:12Speaker 1: The certification found a very nice home on top of
- 29:15Speaker 1: my bedroom desk for eight months collecting dust because again
- 29:21Speaker 1: imposter syndrome saurd. I was, Okay, now I'm certified, but
- 29:25Speaker 1: I don't actually know what I'm doing. I'm not good
- 29:28Speaker 1: enough to go audition somewhere. And so finally my friend
- 29:32Speaker 1: literally pushed me into the hands of an owner at
- 29:39Speaker 1: a local mom and pop studio in LA and you know,
- 29:43Speaker 1: one thing led to another and I auditioned and she
- 29:47Speaker 1: hired me, and you know, it's it's it's wild because
- 29:53Speaker 1: when I interviewed at Pelotona, I remember now Cody rig
- 30:01Speaker 1: actually found me on Instagram and had asked me to
- 30:04Speaker 1: come out to New York to audition for the Peloton gig.
- 30:07Speaker 1: In in short, I didn't get the gig the first
- 30:11Speaker 1: time around. The full audition process from when my very
- 30:14Speaker 1: first audition to when I landed the job was a year.
- 30:16Speaker 3: So it was like this, this very.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Trying, trying thing for me, really tested my faith in
- 30:24Speaker 1: myself because I, like I said, I'd had this vision
- 30:27Speaker 1: that something great was going to come of this. And
- 30:29Speaker 1: although I had this vision, I didn't know that it
- 30:31Speaker 1: was actually for sure that it come true. Although I trusted,
- 30:34Speaker 1: and then here comes some random guy asking me on
- 30:37Speaker 1: Instagram to become audition random to be at the time
- 30:40Speaker 1: auditioned for a Peloton And so when that happened, I
- 30:43Speaker 1: thought to myself, I said, oh my god, this is coming,
- 30:45Speaker 1: this is it's happening, It's happening.
- 30:47Speaker 3: I envisioned this.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I envisioned this, and so when I didn't get the job,
- 30:51Speaker 1: it felt like a loss. It felt like wait, but
- 30:54Speaker 1: I trusted and this, I saw this, and how is
- 30:57Speaker 1: this not happening?
- 30:58Speaker 3: And so when I.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Finally am in my final interview of twenty five or
- 31:04Speaker 1: whatever I went through in the course in the matter
- 31:06Speaker 1: of a year, I sat down with Robin and I
- 31:09Speaker 1: said to Robin, I said, if Robin is.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Again our VP, I said, if.
- 31:14Speaker 1: I get this job, I know that part of my
- 31:20Speaker 1: existence here is to gift people with the ability of
- 31:29Speaker 1: knowing that anything can happen. I am a first generation
- 31:35Speaker 1: American to a descendant of two Nigerians. I was overweight
- 31:40Speaker 1: half of my life, like this wasn't supposed to be
- 31:45Speaker 1: my story. It wasn't even something that I daydreamed about
- 31:47Speaker 1: because it was so far from the fabric of my
- 31:51Speaker 1: DNA of where I was. And so if this opportunity
- 31:56Speaker 1: could happen for me, then I dare people to have
- 32:00Speaker 1: the audacity to dream and to dream bigger.
- 32:03Speaker 3: And this has taught me.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Personally for myself, to dream and to dream bigger. Everything
- 32:10Speaker 1: that I've asked for or dreamt about in this lifetime,
- 32:14Speaker 1: in some way or another, it's happened for me. I've
- 32:18Speaker 1: experienced a lot of tragedy in my life. I lost
- 32:21Speaker 1: my little brother when he was nineteen years old. Three
- 32:23Speaker 1: years after I lost my brother, I lost my dad,
- 32:25Speaker 1: and three years after that, I lost my mom. And
- 32:27Speaker 1: you know, I think that if I decided after losing
- 32:31Speaker 1: my mother, I think if I decided to do nothing
- 32:33Speaker 1: with my life, that the world would have given me
- 32:36Speaker 1: a past. The world would have said, you know what
- 32:38Speaker 1: she's been through, shit like, we're just gonna let her just,
- 32:43Speaker 1: you know, skate by if you will. And with those experiences,
- 32:51Speaker 1: I decided that I'm not going to let that trauma
- 32:55Speaker 1: dictate my future.
- 32:56Speaker 3: I'm going to pull pieces of it.
- 32:58Speaker 1: And the pieces that I pull is the understanding that
- 33:01Speaker 1: life is so short. Life is so short, and it's
- 33:07Speaker 1: so beautiful. And I do everything that I do because
- 33:13Speaker 1: I know that my family members cannot. I know that
- 33:16Speaker 1: they're not here anymore, and so I try to live
- 33:18Speaker 1: life fully for them. Stepping into twenty twenty one, my
- 33:23Speaker 1: goal this year is to not let my ambition rob
- 33:27Speaker 1: me of my current joy, to not let my ambition
- 33:31Speaker 1: rob me of my current blessing. Meaning that I think
- 33:34Speaker 1: that we all have things that we're trying to build
- 33:37Speaker 1: in our lives, build for our families, build for ourselves.
- 33:40Speaker 1: I don't want what I'm trying to build rob me
- 33:44Speaker 1: of enjoying what I've already built. There's so much around me,
- 33:47Speaker 1: like when I open my eyes and look around me
- 33:48Speaker 1: in this life, like wow, wow wow. But I don't
- 33:51Speaker 1: want it to be in a place where I'm so
- 33:53Speaker 1: busy trying to get to the next thing, where I'm
- 33:57Speaker 1: so busy aspiring to the next thing that I forget
- 33:59Speaker 1: to just live and the joy of where I am
- 34:01Speaker 1: right here, right now.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Thank you so much for sharing all that with me,
- 34:07Speaker 2: and I think a huge takeaway here. You mentioned both
- 34:12Speaker 2: loss not only in that first round of your dream
- 34:16Speaker 2: Job audition, but then also of course of your brother
- 34:20Speaker 2: and your parents. Talk to me about your strategy really
- 34:26Speaker 2: for coming back and showing up after such hardship. I mean,
- 34:31Speaker 2: the show is called hurdle, So talk to me about
- 34:36Speaker 2: what you do when sometimes it just feels like you
- 34:40Speaker 2: keep tripping and tripping and tripping and you're not clearing
- 34:42Speaker 2: where you want to go.
- 34:45Speaker 1: I think that when people look at success, they envision
- 34:52Speaker 1: success as a straight line to the top, when in fact,
- 35:00Speaker 1: there are peaks, there are highs, there are valleys, and
- 35:04Speaker 1: there are.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Lows, There is no straight line.
- 35:09Speaker 1: I think that on the road to success, within that journey,
- 35:16Speaker 1: there are hurdles, and if you understand that and you
- 35:22Speaker 1: trust that that is part of the process, then when
- 35:28Speaker 1: those hurdles or roadblocks arrive, you're less apt to stop,
- 35:37Speaker 1: You're less resistant, You're willing to lean in and trust
- 35:45Speaker 1: that you'll move through it. I believe everything happens for
- 35:49Speaker 1: a reason. It's a wild thing to say, or for rather,
- 35:53Speaker 1: it's a wild thing for me to still believe given
- 35:57Speaker 1: my life's experience. I said, I believe thing happens for
- 36:00Speaker 1: a reason, and then one might argue, well, why did
- 36:03Speaker 1: your brother pass so soon? You know.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Why? Why?
- 36:10Speaker 3: Why?
- 36:10Speaker 2: Why?
- 36:11Speaker 3: Why?
- 36:11Speaker 1: And it's like I don't have the answer. I don't
- 36:15Speaker 1: have the answer, but I do know one. I would
- 36:19Speaker 1: give anything to have any one of them back, even
- 36:22Speaker 1: for a moment, to have two minutes, thirty seconds, ten
- 36:25Speaker 1: seconds with any of one of them. Would I would
- 36:28Speaker 1: give the world. With that being said, I know that
- 36:33Speaker 1: I wouldn't be the person that I am today had
- 36:36Speaker 1: I not gone through those experiences. And I trust that
- 36:45Speaker 1: part of my being here, part of that being part
- 36:51Speaker 1: of my story now, my DNA is that I'm supposed
- 36:55Speaker 1: to share that story.
- 36:56Speaker 3: I'm supposed to share my story.
- 36:58Speaker 1: The thing about life is that no day is promised,
- 37:01Speaker 1: no day is guaranteed.
- 37:02Speaker 3: People lose people.
- 37:04Speaker 1: And I think that part of my story is to.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Be there, to.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Be a light for people who are going through the unimaginable,
- 37:19Speaker 1: to again to not hide my story, but to share
- 37:23Speaker 1: my story, to show people that life does go on.
- 37:31Speaker 1: And for me, again, it's about living because they cannot.
- 37:36Speaker 1: If I were to you know, you said the name
- 37:39Speaker 1: of the show, it's hurdle, if I were to go through.
- 37:43Speaker 1: If I were to have said, Okay, this is a hurdle,
- 37:47Speaker 1: I'm just going to stay here. It's like I don't
- 37:49Speaker 1: know how to say this, But like what good does
- 37:51Speaker 1: that do for them? Right? Like, unfortunately I can never
- 37:55Speaker 1: have them back, And so I can live life life
- 38:00Speaker 1: fully and intentionally. I can live life in purpose and
- 38:05Speaker 1: on purpose. I think that a life lead of service
- 38:09Speaker 1: is a life lad of purpose. My sign off every
- 38:13Speaker 1: time I finish a class, I say, it's my absolute
- 38:15Speaker 1: gifts in my honor to sweat and to serve you
- 38:20Speaker 1: on this spike. And I think when you're living a
- 38:23Speaker 1: life of service, when you are doing for people. You
- 38:28Speaker 1: are doing things in purpose, within your life's purpose and
- 38:33Speaker 1: on purpose. I think you know, Emily Hurdle podcast, this
- 38:36Speaker 1: is your purpose or one of the many things that
- 38:39Speaker 1: may be within your purpose.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Breaking into today's episode to give some more love to
- 38:51Speaker 2: Daily Harvest. I'm the kind of person that once I
- 38:54Speaker 2: find something that works for me, I totally stick with it.
- 38:58Speaker 2: And that is why Daily Harvest has been in my
- 39:02Speaker 2: routine for years now. Their picks are made without preservatives,
- 39:07Speaker 2: added sugar, or artificial anything, and they actually just launched
- 39:11Speaker 2: their first ever plant based milk collection, starting with almondmilk.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Daily Harvest milk is made of only almonds in a
- 39:19Speaker 2: dash of sea salt that is in And the best
- 39:22Speaker 2: part is that I can actually stay stopped up because
- 39:25Speaker 2: everything stays fresh until I'm ready to use it. AKA
- 39:29Speaker 2: no more. Oh, I really want to make it smoothie
- 39:31Speaker 2: right now. I know it would be better with almondmilk.
- 39:33Speaker 2: I have no more almond milk in the fridge. I
- 39:35Speaker 2: know you have also been in this situation. It is
- 39:39Speaker 2: definitely frustrating. Daily Harvest again undeniably delicious, clean food without
- 39:46Speaker 2: any of the prep Get started today. Head on over

- 39:55Speaker 2: that is promo code hurdle two five for twenty five
- 39:58Speaker 2: dollars off your first box at dailyharvest dot com. That's
- 40:02Speaker 2: Daily Harvest dot com for so many, I mean, twenty
- 40:16Speaker 2: twenty a huge testament to the fact that so many
- 40:19Speaker 2: of us have been through the unexpected and some difficult moments.
- 40:23Speaker 2: For you, when you went through your difficult moments, was
- 40:26Speaker 2: it difficult for you not to maybe dive back into
- 40:30Speaker 2: some of the habits from earlier on that were a
- 40:34Speaker 2: little bit less than healthy or didn't make you feel
- 40:37Speaker 2: good about yourself. Yeah, And that's the thing.
- 40:41Speaker 1: It's a journey. It's not a snap, snap pop. You're
- 40:45Speaker 1: cured if you will like you're cured, meaning like this
- 40:48Speaker 1: is no longer something that you have to continue to
- 40:51Speaker 1: focus on. So yeah, So when the pandemic first happened,
- 40:56Speaker 1: I was I've said this before, but I there moments
- 41:00Speaker 1: where and like.
- 41:01Speaker 3: I didn't know.
- 41:01Speaker 1: I didn't remember walking to the refrigerator. I didn't know
- 41:04Speaker 1: how it was happening. Girl, And I look in my hand,
- 41:07Speaker 1: I'm like ice cream who bought ice cream. I live
- 41:10Speaker 1: in a wonder apartment by myself. Unless Caesar, my dog,
- 41:13Speaker 1: purchased the ice cream, I'm pretty sure that I bought
- 41:15Speaker 1: this ice cream. And so it was just like this
- 41:18Speaker 1: thing is like, you know, you're just and I think
- 41:20Speaker 1: it was more I'm a very focused person, but I
- 41:23Speaker 1: think it was more so just being sedentary and being
- 41:27Speaker 1: in the house. I wasn't used to being in the
- 41:30Speaker 1: house quite as often, and so it was just about
- 41:37Speaker 1: it's been about finding a new normal. It's been about
- 41:44Speaker 1: giving myself grace, like not trying to measure myself now
- 41:48Speaker 1: to what I was physically, be it the way that
- 41:55Speaker 1: I look or the way that I feel, or a
- 41:57Speaker 1: strength how much I can bench press or spot like,
- 42:00Speaker 1: I can't compare myself to what I was a year
- 42:03Speaker 1: ago because a year ago I wasn't in a pandemic,
- 42:05Speaker 1: and unless I, you know, have the results or another
- 42:09Speaker 1: pandemic to measure myself against, then it's not really It's
- 42:13Speaker 1: really apples to apples, you know, and just an understanding
- 42:15Speaker 1: of loving my body at whatever physical capacity I'm at,
- 42:21Speaker 1: If that makes sense.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you mentioned a couple of times briefly, like
- 42:25Speaker 2: nutrition and where you're at with this. I think what's
- 42:28Speaker 2: really what would be really helpful to touch on a
- 42:30Speaker 2: little bit is to get a better understanding of kind
- 42:33Speaker 2: of like how you are fueling for the fact that
- 42:36Speaker 2: you are, you know, constantly showing up to be in
- 42:40Speaker 2: service drenched in sweat for other people. So how how
- 42:44Speaker 2: are you showing up in a way that you're fueling
- 42:46Speaker 2: your body to be able to do that.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Right, and so yeah, so I mentioned the beginning of
- 42:51Speaker 1: the pandemic. You know, I fell I don't want to
- 42:54Speaker 1: say fell off. I took a different course, if you will,
- 42:58Speaker 1: than the one that I was on, and as I
- 43:01Speaker 1: try to as I now pay way not to necessarily
- 43:04Speaker 1: get back on course, but as I paved the roads
- 43:08Speaker 1: of a of a new course. I've just gone back
- 43:12Speaker 1: to what I know as best, like just tried and true.
- 43:15Speaker 1: And so for me, that's fueling my body with foods
- 43:18Speaker 1: that matter, foods that I need to actually fuel my tank.
- 43:22Speaker 1: It goes back to how I supplement my body. Like
- 43:26Speaker 1: I mentioned earlier, I'm part of the nutrition team and
- 43:30Speaker 1: they actually reached out to me at the end of
- 43:32Speaker 1: towards the end of last year, and it was such
- 43:34Speaker 1: a beautiful partnership. I've been a huge fan of obdomen nutrition.
- 43:39Speaker 3: For a long time.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Now.
- 43:41Speaker 1: I end a lot of classes by saying you or
- 43:44Speaker 1: you're only as strong tomorrow as the recovery that you're
- 43:48Speaker 1: willing to put in today, Meaning people want to go
- 43:52Speaker 1: so hard in their workout. You can only go really,
- 43:55Speaker 1: really hard in your workout when you properly refuel your
- 43:59Speaker 1: body today, meaning you can only go so hard and
- 44:01Speaker 1: tomorrow's workout when you refill your body today.
- 44:05Speaker 2: What excites you right now Tonday?
- 44:08Speaker 1: I have a couple of things twenty twenty one. I
- 44:10Speaker 1: want to be stronger than ever. And I say that, like,
- 44:13Speaker 1: you know, I went through this phase where I was
- 44:16Speaker 1: really in my head about not feeling as strong, and
- 44:22Speaker 1: then I kind of found myself in a place where
- 44:25Speaker 1: I felt like, Okay, give yourself grace. And now I'm
- 44:29Speaker 1: in this place where I'm just like, girl, you're a badass.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Like I'm kind of in this place where I want
- 44:37Speaker 1: to rather than feeling like I have to. And it
- 44:39Speaker 1: kind of goes back to what I was saying earlier.
- 44:41Speaker 1: But now I don't feel like I have to do
- 44:43Speaker 1: anything but show up as me.
- 44:45Speaker 3: But now I'm a place where I want to.
- 44:49Speaker 1: I'm not going to say get in the best shape
- 44:51Speaker 1: of my life, because then that comes back to this
- 44:52Speaker 1: physical look, this physical image. I want to feel stronger
- 44:57Speaker 1: than I've ever felt before. So that's something that I'm
- 45:02Speaker 1: looking forward to doing. I am excited about being aware
- 45:12Speaker 1: of my joy, meaning I'm so excited to focus on
- 45:21Speaker 1: what already is, to enjoy the fruit of what I've
- 45:27Speaker 1: already built.
- 45:29Speaker 3: I'm so excited to let go of what isn't.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Yet and just be.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Like, we spend so much time as people trying to
- 45:45Speaker 1: provide a living that we forget to just live. We
- 45:51Speaker 1: spend so much time trying to provide a living that
- 45:54Speaker 1: we forget to just live when we think of Like
- 45:57Speaker 1: when you think of self care, self care is worth
- 46:00Speaker 1: that has a bad a wrap. When you say self care,
- 46:02Speaker 1: people think it's this luxury thing. They think, oh, spa,
- 46:05Speaker 1: da nails, facial, which self care can be those things.
- 46:09Speaker 1: But self care, in my right, it's not a luxury.
- 46:12Speaker 1: It's not a privilege. If you took the word self care,
- 46:15Speaker 1: if you replace the word self care with soul care,
- 46:19Speaker 1: then soul care.
- 46:22Speaker 3: Shows up as this thing that sounds like a must.
- 46:26Speaker 1: It sounds like a right, I need to do things
- 46:28Speaker 1: for the good of my soul when our phones are
- 46:31Speaker 1: on ten percent, Like I know myself when I like,
- 46:35Speaker 1: if I'm at dinner and my phone's on ten percent,
- 46:38Speaker 1: I run to the to the person at the front,
- 46:41Speaker 1: and I ask them if they have a charger, because
- 46:42Speaker 1: God forbid my phone fall below ten percent. But when
- 46:48Speaker 1: it's ourselves, when it's our own bodies, when it's our
- 46:51Speaker 1: own minds, when it's our own spirit, we let our
- 46:54Speaker 1: bodies and our minds run on ten percent all the time.
- 46:58Speaker 1: Why not have that same urgency. Oh my gosh, I
- 47:01Speaker 1: gotta find an outlet to plug in my smartphone. Oh
- 47:04Speaker 1: my god, I'm I have to find an outlet to
- 47:08Speaker 1: plug in myself. And so this year, I just want
- 47:11Speaker 1: to focus a lot on my own personal soul care,
- 47:14Speaker 1: on restoring, on recharging at the same time being my
- 47:18Speaker 1: strongest self, showing up in my fullest capacity of joy.
- 47:24Speaker 2: How does Tunday give herself soul care?
- 47:30Speaker 3: You know what? I you know what? Sometimes are we
- 47:34Speaker 3: figuring that out?
- 47:35Speaker 2: We're figuring that out.
- 47:37Speaker 1: No, no, no, it's like you want to have like
- 47:40Speaker 1: this big, fancy answer. But when I'm like, if I'm
- 47:43Speaker 1: being completely honest. Soul Care for me is doing absolutely
- 47:47Speaker 1: not a damn thing.
- 47:48Speaker 3: Doing nothing.
- 47:49Speaker 1: I will turn music on something like because I want
- 47:51Speaker 1: to say, like, oh, I'll sit in a hot tub.
- 47:53Speaker 2: I do do that.
- 47:54Speaker 1: And sometimes I can't make it to the hot tub,
- 47:56Speaker 1: to my hot tub meeting my bathtub.
- 47:59Speaker 3: I can't make it that far. Sometimes I can't. I can't.
- 48:02Speaker 1: I don't even really watch a lot of TV, but
- 48:03Speaker 1: I can't even turn the TV on. Sometimes I want
- 48:06Speaker 1: to sit here in silence, turn on a candle and
- 48:10Speaker 1: be by myself. Sometimes I'll open the window. I love,
- 48:13Speaker 1: oddly the sound of New York traffic, like when there's
- 48:16Speaker 1: a candle and music and New York traffic with like
- 48:18Speaker 1: a little.
- 48:18Speaker 3: Bit of cool breeze coming in. I know it's kind
- 48:20Speaker 3: of weird, but I love it.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Listening to a podcast like soul Care is whatever I
- 48:25Speaker 1: need in that moment.
- 48:29Speaker 2: I give it to myself. That is soul Care. I
- 48:33Speaker 2: dig it, I dig it. You mentioned reading a book.
- 48:35Speaker 2: I've got to ask any book recommendations for the Hurdlers.
- 48:38Speaker 2: We have a book club.
- 48:40Speaker 3: Oh well, the book.
- 48:40Speaker 1: I mean, not necessarily what I'm reading right now, but
- 48:43Speaker 1: one of my favorite books.
- 48:44Speaker 3: Oh, you know what.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Actually, I just read The Year of Yes by Shonda Ryan's.
- 48:48Speaker 1: It's a quick read, such a great book. Basically, she's
- 48:52Speaker 1: talking about how she spent an entire year saying yes
- 48:56Speaker 1: and sometimes actually saying no men saying yes.
- 48:59Speaker 3: Too much detail there, but she talks about how this
- 49:02Speaker 3: year of.
- 49:02Speaker 1: Yesque changed her life in her outlook on the way
- 49:08Speaker 1: that she shows up in the world.
- 49:09Speaker 3: I'd say that.
- 49:10Speaker 1: And then one of my all time favorites that I'll
- 49:12Speaker 1: always recommend is Daring Greatly by Brene Brown.
- 49:14Speaker 2: Oh classic classic, Okay, Dune Day. Final question here, you
- 49:21Speaker 2: have an opportunity to offer the tune day going through
- 49:26Speaker 2: one of her life's biggest hurdles. I would I mean,
- 49:31Speaker 2: we talked about a lot of them here today, whether
- 49:33Speaker 2: it be the passing of your family members or perhaps
- 49:37Speaker 2: that first great loss that first know from Peloton. You
- 49:42Speaker 2: have the opportunity to offer her one piece of advice
- 49:47Speaker 2: going through those large hurdle moments. What do you tell her?
- 49:53Speaker 3: Trust?
- 49:55Speaker 1: Just trust, trust, Trust that nothing is happening to you
- 49:59Speaker 1: and every thing is happening for you. Failure can only
- 50:02Speaker 1: be judged in hindsight. You're not allowed to go through
- 50:06Speaker 1: something and while you're going through that thing, call it
- 50:09Speaker 1: a failure, because in that moment, that thing, this thing,
- 50:13Speaker 1: tune day, that may come that you may deem a failure,
- 50:17Speaker 1: it may not actually be a failure. It may be
- 50:19Speaker 1: a course, recourse or a redirection in your life. It
- 50:24Speaker 1: may be the universe setting you on path or setting
- 50:27Speaker 1: you on track.
- 50:29Speaker 3: For something that you just can't see yet. So ultimately, trust,
- 50:34Speaker 3: just trust.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Thank you so much for your time today, tune day.
- 50:37Speaker 2: How do the hurdlers keep up with you? Give me
- 50:40Speaker 2: all of the details, girl.
- 50:43Speaker 3: I am so bad with social media.
- 50:45Speaker 1: Like I tune to tune day, tune like music too,
- 50:49Speaker 1: number two tune days. My Instagram Facebook is tune Day.
- 50:54Speaker 3: I think it's.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Tunday Peloton Peloton tune Day. You'll find me something. And
- 50:58Speaker 1: then Twitter, I haven't even dabbled in.
- 50:59Speaker 3: Girl. I'm look, I'm trying. I'm trying soul care.
- 51:05Speaker 2: Let's focus on soul care, and the.
- 51:08Speaker 3: Soul care is not being on social media as much.
- 51:10Speaker 3: How about that? Girl, I'm with you.
- 51:13Speaker 2: Thank you so much for your time again. I could
- 51:15Speaker 2: chat with you for hours. I'm over at Emily a
- 51:18Speaker 2: Body and at Hurdle Podcast. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you
- 51:23Speaker 2: guys next time.
