- 0:03SPEAKER_00: This is the Mostly Football Show, a uniquely Australian take on the NFL and all things in the world of sport.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Over to you, Pete.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: Good morning, good evening, good afternoon, wherever you are in the wild world.
- 0:23SPEAKER_03: The Jets have won a game.
- 0:25SPEAKER_03: The Browns are dog shit, and I hate football.
- 0:28SPEAKER_03: Welcome to the Mostly Football Show for Game One of the 2026 season.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: I'm joined by Matt and KG, and only one of those two is smiling.
- 0:41SPEAKER_03: Gentlemen, how has your weekend being?
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Mine was as predicted, right?
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: You know, a lot of people jumping on the uh Cowboys hype, and they did what they normally do, which is um lay an egg and and disappoint.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I'm I'm not too bad.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm you know, middle of the road because I think um that's kind of what we expected this year.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: I did not expect a whole bunch of what I saw in week one this year, but we'll get to um that in just a bit.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: But otherwise, uh all good.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Football is back, maybe so it's it's good.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's and why uh why do you hate football?
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: Well, before I talk about why I hate football, let's talk about the man who predicted that the the that Dallas would run up a score and win easily, but also predicted that Chicago would get a narrow win against the Panthers.
- 1:34SPEAKER_03: Matt, how has your weekend been?
- 1:38SPEAKER_04: Well, it was narrow until about the last ten minutes.
- 1:42SPEAKER_04: Um so yeah, week's been good.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: Um Chicago probably, by my reckoning, take the gong for top defense, sorry, top offense and worst defense in the same week.
- 1:54SPEAKER_04: So uh um I think Caleb's back, but so is our very leaky defense.
- 2:01SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, it's good to be the w the only one out of the three of us um sitting on a W after week one.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Nice, yeah.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Yes Cushy.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: Well yeah, look we'll talk about Green Bay, uh disastrous game, uh which I will blame on the refs later.
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: But let's let's talk about the Australian game, gentlemen.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: We did I d I did a uh a brief recap or review on on Friday.
- 2:30SPEAKER_03: What were your thoughts on on the game and the Rams Pittspoor attitude towards Australia itself?
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: The game, actually, uh I thought um San Francisco just looked strong.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: They look like the San Francisco of old, they had all of their weapons and tools out, and they just look like they kind of made it look easy, um, the whole game.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: So I I was surprised because remember the Rams are this kind of super team that everybody and including myself was gonna be yeah, gonna be fantastic because they've got all the weapons and um they do, but um the 49ers just look um like they had every answer on defense and um you know too many weapons on offense.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it was it was pretty convincing.
- 3:30SPEAKER_04: As we um in I spoke about last week, I think this was a game of two teams that approached the whole affair very well and very badly, and I think that really was a strong differentiator.
- 3:49SPEAKER_04: I mean, in terms of the 49ers, how how promising does that Brock Purdy Mike Evans combination look for them?
- 3:59SPEAKER_04: And then you sprinkle in a little bit of George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey, it could be could be uh good times ahead for the 49ers, but yeah, I don't think the uh Rams approached this in anywhere near the right way, and I'm sure there's a myriad of reasons why they chose to make the decisions that they did, but they're all very confusing and mysterious to me.
- 4:24SPEAKER_03: Agreed.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: Very good.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: Well, that's wrapped up last week's game uh very nicely.
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: So before we kick off with the review of the rest of the games from last week, Matt, over to you for the news.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Now it's time for the latest in NFL news.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Matt, what's been happening?
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: Thank you, Peter.
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: Uh here's the news roundup September the 9th to September the 15th.
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: And as we've just been uh touching upon, the NFL played its first ever game in Melbourne, um, drawing 1,021 fans.
- 4:59SPEAKER_04: And that made it the seventh most attended regular season game in NFL history, and just the fourth since 2000 to draw more than 100,000 attendees.
- 5:10SPEAKER_04: Um, as Australians will know, the MCG is the largest stadium in the Southern Hemisphere with an official capacity of 1,024.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: So the three people that didn't turn up, yeah.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: I knew we should have.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: I wish it was three, yeah.
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: Um as many, as many listeners would know, home stadium capacities range from around about 60,000.
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: I think Soldier Field has got the smallest capacity in the NFL at the moment, up to 82,500 at Met Life in East Rutherford, where the Jets and the Giants share that stadium.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: The most attended NFL regular season games in history are September the 20th, 2009, the Dallas Cowboys played the New York Giants at Cowboys Stadium, um, which is now ATT.
- 6:01SPEAKER_04: 105,121 people turned up to that, with 30,000 Kerry in the standing room only uh area.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: Shovelman.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Shovelman Kerry.
- 6:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he was there taking the taking the biggest on October the second, two thousand and five.
- 6:20SPEAKER_04: The 49ers played the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico.
- 6:25SPEAKER_04: City attendance was 103,467.
- 6:29SPEAKER_04: And going all the way back to November the 10th, 1957, the 49ers again um played the Los Angeles Rams at the Coliseum in Los Angeles with an attendance of 102,368.
- 6:45SPEAKER_04: So there's some interesting facts and figures.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: Meanwhile, Christian Gonzalez becomes the NFL's highest paid cornerback.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: Uh New England Chris was talking about him earlier on in the year when we were doing our previews.
- 6:58SPEAKER_04: After months of stall talks, the Patriots and the All-Pro Corner agreed a record setting four-year$135 million extension,$102 million of that is guaranteed.
- 7:10SPEAKER_04: And that deal was completed less than 48 hours before Wednesday's opener.
- 7:16SPEAKER_04: Sticking with the Patriots, AJ Brown's debut lasted 31 minutes.
- 7:20SPEAKER_04: He suffered a high ankle sprain in the third quarter and was placed on injured reserve on Friday.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: Updated reporting through the week has pushed his expected absence out from an initial at least four weeks to now roughly six weeks, but no surgery is planned.
- 7:38SPEAKER_04: Um, and obviously, given that New England traded a 2028 first rounder and a 2027 fifth to get him, that's uh a big blow to their plans.
- 7:49SPEAKER_04: Romeo Dobbs moves into the WR1 role in the meantime.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: Are you sure?
- 7:54SPEAKER_04: Back to the back to the 49ers.
- 7:59SPEAKER_04: Carl Shanahan quietly got a contract extension in place this week.
- 8:04SPEAKER_04: ESPN confirmed that the 49ers head coach signed a multi-year deal.
- 8:10SPEAKER_04: Um, and he actually signed it during the offseason, and and news of it surfaced publicly just this week.
- 8:16SPEAKER_04: The Bears locked up the Andre Swift.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: They're running back to a three-year$33.75 million extension,$27.5 million guaranteed.
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: Uh, strong vote of confidence um after his showing in Ben Johnson's offense last season.
- 8:32SPEAKER_04: And Swift, well, as we'll talk about later in the show, certainly showed Ben the colour of his money in his week one performance.
- 8:41SPEAKER_04: The Packers extended uh tight end Tucker Kraft uh four years to a$75 million extension, maximum value of 92 million with a 22-26.5 million dollar signing bonus.
- 8:58SPEAKER_04: Uh Kraft is was a 2023 third round pick.
- 9:02SPEAKER_04: Um and he's hoping to play um for the first time uh since tearing his ACL last week in week nine.
- 9:12SPEAKER_04: Um talking of further injuries, Miles Garrett, it has been revealed, needs a knee operation, which is a further blow for the Rams, and it will sideline him for at least four weeks.
- 9:23SPEAKER_04: The two-time defensive player of the year missed most of training camp with a knee problem, um which he was trying to manage.
- 9:30SPEAKER_04: But after the game uh in Melbourne, it became clear, or he felt it became clear, that he would need minor surgery.
- 9:38SPEAKER_04: So Garrett's gone on to the injured reserve list, which means by league rules he must miss at least four games.
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold is unlikely to land on injured reserve himself after suffering a glute injury in the week one game.
- 9:55SPEAKER_04: Um, however, his status for week two's game against the Cardinals is still up in the air.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: The Seahawks spokesperson said he is dealing with a very unique soft tissue injury that is short term without a firm timeline.
- 10:10SPEAKER_04: Sticking with quarterbacks, Minnesota's Kyler Murray remains in concussion protocol.
- 10:16SPEAKER_04: Um, Kevin O'Connell said Murray is progressing, but his status for the weekend's game against the Bears is still uncertain.
- 10:23SPEAKER_04: Um he came in feeling pretty good, said O'Connell is in the protocol, so we'll defer to the medical folks for how the week goes.
- 10:31SPEAKER_04: We're just taking it a day at a time.
- 10:34SPEAKER_04: One of our favourite subjects, the Cleveland Browns.
- 10:38SPEAKER_04: Um, their coach Todd Munkin said on Monday that he anticipates that Deshaun Watson will keep his job as a starting quarterback for Sunday game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 10:49SPEAKER_04: Watson made his first start in 23 months in the week one opener against Jacksonville.
- 10:55SPEAKER_04: He threw an interception on the first series, and the Browns had just five first downs in that first half of football.
- 11:03SPEAKER_04: However, Monken chose not to bench Watson, and he ultimately threw a fourth quarter touchdown pass.
- 11:10SPEAKER_04: Ravens head coach Jesse Minter said there's potential to bring in free agent wide receivers as the team continues to evaluate its options with two of its top pass catchers injured.
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: Zay Flowers with a hamstring and Jacoby Lane, who's a rookie, were hurt in the first half of the Ravens' 41-23 victory over Indianapolis.
- 11:33SPEAKER_04: Um, neither returned for the second half.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: Flowers is described as day-to-day.
- 11:38SPEAKER_04: Um and Minter acknowledged that Lane could be out a little bit longer with what the NFL network reported was a fractured wrist.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: Josh Jacobs' legal case moved towards resolution.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: However, his NFL fate is still unresolved.
- 11:55SPEAKER_04: He pled no contest September the 10th to misdemeanor battery and criminal damage charges, five conditions accepted, including counselling and victim restitution, which clears the way for the league to finalise their disciplinary action.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: But um there's still no announced suspension length or timeline.
- 12:16SPEAKER_04: The league's personal conduct policy calls for a six-game minimum for domestic violence cases.
- 12:25SPEAKER_04: One commentator guessed um that it should be no more than six games um as a as a league suspension.
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: Terry and Arnold remains on the exempt list with Seattle um after his uh August 29th signing.
- 12:44SPEAKER_04: There's no return timeline for him.
- 12:47SPEAKER_04: Also notable, Joey Porter Jr.'s contract impasse with the Steelers was described by insiders as a situation that could very easily go haywire as the season gets underway.
- 13:00SPEAKER_04: And Aaron Donald's debut with the Rams remains the lead storyline into the week following his surprise on retirement.
- 13:09SPEAKER_04: Finally, the Jed York watch.
- 13:12SPEAKER_04: Still no formal suspension, but the picture has shifted significantly since our last podcast.
- 13:18SPEAKER_04: So York has effectively suspended self-suspended himself.
- 13:23SPEAKER_04: Um insiders expect him to stay away from the team for some time, regardless of the length of any formal suspension.
- 13:33SPEAKER_04: Describing his self-imposed exile as being driven by sheer embarrassment.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: Um York spit the Melbourne trip, obviously notably absent.
- 13:43SPEAKER_04: We talked about the challenges he would have faced getting into Australia.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: Um, and this speaks to it being exactly the kind of high media attention event his self-imposed exile is designed to avoid.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: Roger Goodell says an announcement is coming once the investigation wraps up.
- 14:01SPEAKER_04: Um as of September the 14th, still no date has been given.
- 14:06SPEAKER_04: The Athletic reported real structural change inside um the building.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: Carl Shanahan and John Lynch are now effectively running the franchise with no one above them.
- 14:18SPEAKER_04: Um, and they're both exercising veto power.
- 14:22SPEAKER_04: Um, general manager John Lynch confirmed ongoing remote communication via Zoom calls um uh describing York as still a great sounding board despite his absence.
- 14:34SPEAKER_04: The bottom line: no punishment has landed.
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: York has functionally removed himself from public facing team business.
- 14:41SPEAKER_04: Um, and the interesting news subplot is that the Shanahan Lynch Axis now appears to be operating with unusually free reign in his absence.
- 14:50SPEAKER_04: We will continue to track this next week, but until then, that wraps up the news roundup beautiful.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: Thanks, Matt.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: Honestly, gents, I don't know where to start with this.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: I'm still uh still getting over the the the Minnesota Hackers game.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: So so let's throw somewhere else, let's talk about the Buffalo Bills.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: So I think the two major winners, uh really interested in your take on this.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: I think there's two major winners came out of week one, um the Chicago Bears, obviously with their ability to score at will, and and we'll let Matt talk about them uh shortly.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: But I think the other big winners coming out were the Bills.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: Um and I know it's just a five-point win over over the Texans.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: But that's a really good statement win to open up the campaign.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: Uh Texans defense has been really good the last few years.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: So uh Josh Allen, 356 357 yards of four touchdowns.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Um Kerry, you've got to get that seven.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: Yes, you're you're an advocate for the Texans.
- 16:13SPEAKER_03: Uh what are your takes on on uh where they go from here?
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: Because they would have been hoping to uh open up with a win.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Look, um I I think they've got a good chance to um continue you know to to bounce back, is what I'll call it.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: But um I haven't looked at their next week, but I know that they played the Cowboys soon, and that should be the bounce back win.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Well, they've got the Joe Burroughs Bengals next week.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: So I think they're they're uh a couple a few weeks away, actually, not till uh October, uh that they play the Cowboys, and that'll be a nice um you know gift for them.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Uh no, no, seriously, um I think their their defense was still solid, uh, but I just think um Josh Allen uh uh you know did what he does when he's on um on on the good side of of Josh Allen, which is just he just makes things happen.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: Um and that's what they proved that um when he really wants to make things happen, he can.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: Um so I don't think they really had a bad defensive showing.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: I just think it's not what we expected because I expect actually expect it to be a much lower scoring game than it was.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Um but um yeah, I think they'll bounce back, no problem.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: For me it was interesting, having watched the the dreadful performance from Drake May on uh on the season opener against Seattle, where his his throwing was atrocious.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: Um three interceptions, um really, really not focused.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: Didn't look like they were focused on on the game.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: And whilst you could see their defences adjusted to the way Seattle um and their O-line had adjusted to the way Seattle was defending them.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: And he got more protection, he just wasn't on it, um, which is stick by my decision, they're not gonna make the playoffs this year, not not if he plays like that.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: Um but Josh Allen really stepped up into this.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: Um Matt, your your thoughts before we throw to your team, as we should.
- 18:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, inter interesting one.
- 18:17SPEAKER_04: The um the game stats the Texans had 26 first downs um versus the Vills 20, and time in possession was dominated by the Texans 36 minutes and 17 seconds versus 23 minutes and 43.
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: So the tail of the tape didn't really match the outcome of the game, but um yeah, Josh Allen was quietly efficient.
- 18:43SPEAKER_04: Um not a lot going on on the ground for either side.
- 18:48SPEAKER_04: Um, but um it yeah, it feels as though uh the Texans with the ball possession and um and time um uh really should have done better.
- 19:01SPEAKER_04: Um I unfortunately didn't watch the game, but um I would imagine uh CJ Stroud um really needs to pick this team up and um prove to them and himself that um he is capable of leading them um to the next step.
- 19:19SPEAKER_04: Um I have a fancy for the Texans this year.
- 19:22SPEAKER_04: Um I think the Bills um answered some questions with their new offense, but clearly um you know the um the Texans possessing the ball for almost 40 minutes of that game would suggest that there's still questions to be asked about the new Bills defense.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: I agree, and talking of uh defenses that might have got overlooked because the offences were awesome.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: Let's go to probably the biggest winners in terms of uh confidence, in terms of score.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: Does everything else?
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: Your beloved Chicago Bears.
- 19:57SPEAKER_03: A greater 59-37 win to Calla Williams with four touchdowns over 270, 291 yards on the ground, um but also gave up 478 yards.
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: So um well, yeah, I mean you've got the Vikings next week, right?
- 20:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we were actually short favourites for that game, which surprises me.
- 20:26SPEAKER_04: I mean, I think the Bears were what I potentially predicted them to be, you know, a team that can score points but can't stop teams.
- 20:35SPEAKER_04: So the the 59 points we scored is the most points that the Bears have scored since not not the year 1980.
- 20:43SPEAKER_04: Um a stunning um stunning score line.
- 20:47SPEAKER_04: It was tight up until sort of midway through that fourth, and then um uh we capitalized on a uh on a couple of opportunities and and pushed away.
- 20:58SPEAKER_04: The the the Bears established the running game as well as Caleb being very efficient um in the passing game.
- 21:07SPEAKER_04: So both DeAndre Swift, we talked about him and his new contract, he had 124 yards on 18 carries, and Carlman Onguy had 100 yards on 10 carries.
- 21:17SPEAKER_04: So both of those players bust open for big gains, and Carlman Onguy scored a 61-yard touchdown.
- 21:24SPEAKER_04: That's the longest run of his NFL career.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: I did watch a very interesting clip um uh that showed that the Bears ran right 60% of the time that they rushed the ball.
- 21:39SPEAKER_04: Um, and that right hand side rush is behind um Darnell Wright, who is our right tackle, um, and was a second team all pro.
- 21:50SPEAKER_04: He's an unbelievable uh run blocker, and Jonah Jackson.
- 21:55SPEAKER_04: So um good for the um for the sort of new Bears O line, great.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: For us to establish that run game.
- 22:02SPEAKER_04: Do Khaliff Raymond picked up his uh free agent wide receiver, led all receivers with eight catches.
- 22:10SPEAKER_04: Um you know, promising, but uh we've got to we've got to stop teams, otherwise, we're the Dallas Cowboys 2.0 this season, I think.
- 22:19SPEAKER_04: Um, one final um takeaway from that game.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: Um we've been pronouncing his name wrongly.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: It's Chuba Hubbard.
- 22:28SPEAKER_04: Uh Chuba.
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: Not Chuba.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: No.
- 22:30SPEAKER_03: Not like Chuba Chubbs.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: It's Chuba.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: That doesn't uh no, that doesn't Chuba Hubbard is nowhere near as cool as Chuba Hubbard.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 22:45SPEAKER_04: So um let's just keep calling him Chuba.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, if it ever turns up here, we'll call him Chuba.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: But uh no, it's uh Mr.
- 22:53SPEAKER_03: Hubbard.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: If you're listening, I apologize.
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: You're gonna be Chuba for a little while longer.
- 22:59SPEAKER_03: So um well you you you referenced uh Dallas 2.0, Kerry.
- 23:03SPEAKER_03: Let's uh let's get your uh misery out of the way.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: Um so so uh Sunday night football, you you graced uh giant stadium um with a whole pile of crap.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: What was that all about?
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was it was pretty bad.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Uh look, I I think the uh I I want to say the moment got to them, right?
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: The um they didn't look sharp um from the first um series, you know, faltering and and um three and out.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: And I just think that um the Cowboys probably took week one for granted.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: And and I I I know that you know teams get really hot for week one, but you know, they were surgical.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: The Giants, uh, you know, um Dodd had uh 23 for 29, three touchdowns, zero interceptions, was only sacked once.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: It it didn't feel like the defense improved at all, and the offense just didn't have the answers that they um assumed that they would have because you know you've got a lot of talent there, you just assume that uh people are gonna get open, right?
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: And and and that wasn't the case.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: The the um New York Giants just smothered them for the most part.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: They did okay.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: Um, but I I think that we um, you know, kind of got a slap around and um we will hopefully learn from that.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: But if I look at our schedule, we're we're well we're in trouble.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: You let Cam Scatterbow run all over you, and that's uh that's unusual in its own right, right?
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: So Yeah, that's right.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: It was uh look, Dak Prescott is is uh well he was just woeful.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: He's a quarterback that you expect to be scoring points, so so maybe Caleb Wilson is the new Dak Presto.
- 24:58SPEAKER_03: Maybe gonna score plenty of points, but also gonna concede quite a lot.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: So um yeah, yeah, look, I I've told you I I think this is gonna be Jackson Dart's season, a breakout year for him.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: I think it's a great statement win from the Giants.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: Can they pick it up and go on and win again next week?
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that that's gonna be tough.
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: That's gonna be tough because I don't think they've got an easy game next week.
- 25:22SPEAKER_03: I think they are um they're playing the Rams in SoFi Stadium next week, so could be a uh another hangover for the Rams, uh who again didn't set the world alight.
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: But but let's see, I'll I'll I'll keep an eye on uh normally because they're one and oh and I don't follow a team that's one and oh at the moment and and and and before neither do I and before we come on to them because the the Packers pay the Jets in week two the Jets had a very professional performance this this week.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: Uh unbelievable came uh came away with a win.
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: Um an unexpected win.
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: I I saw the highlights unbelievably 15 minutes of highlights.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: Uh 23-10 over the Titans at Nissan Stadium.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: Um are the Jets gonna surprise us this year.
- 26:23SPEAKER_04: Well, I saw Justin Fields was the quarterback for the Yes, so uh yeah.
- 26:28SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 26:30SPEAKER_04: Former Bears reject um yeah, I mean big ups to the Jets.
- 26:39SPEAKER_04: Um sorry, and I should also acknowledge Jackson Darrell and himself a game as you predicted for the Giants, um Peter, but um big ups to Malik Neighbours's first game since an awful injury, caught six catches in that game against the Cowboys.
- 26:57SPEAKER_04: But yeah, the um the Jets defense stepped up, they held the Titans to just 10 points.
- 27:04SPEAKER_04: Um it by all accounts it was a balanced mistake-free performance, which isn't something those aren't words that we've associated with the Jets in uh in many a year.
- 27:16SPEAKER_04: And I think it you know it it's a great sort of statement win for um a team that clearly is in in rebuilding mode.
- 27:25SPEAKER_04: So um good on them.
- 27:28SPEAKER_04: Um let's see what they do next week.
- 27:30SPEAKER_04: Can they build on it?
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: Well, uh it was it was New York's week, right?
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: Whatever games going on, it's it's generous.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: They were doing the whole yeah, well, they were doing the 9-11 thing and there was the whole bunch of commemoration, so I think you know they they they did the the week proud.
- 27:51SPEAKER_04: And perspective, I think Tennessee are hardly a powerhouse And neither is Dallas, so it makes sense.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: But for me, it was it was just the professionalism of it.
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: Again, you you're used to seeing the the calamity jets running around all over the case, fumbling, dropping things.
- 28:11SPEAKER_03: Um that appeared to be the Patriots this week, so it'd be interesting to get New England Chris on to talk through how piss poor they were.
- 28:19SPEAKER_03: But let's get on to the game I don't really want to talk about, which is the the Packers, Minnesota.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: Now you can look at this in many ways.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: Um you can look at it from the poor officiating, you can look at it from the clinicalness of Jordan Love to Christian Watson for six carries for 147 yards and two touchdowns is a game.
- 28:41SPEAKER_03: Is a game.
- 28:42SPEAKER_03: Um But you can't overlook the fourth quarter collapse for the fifth game in a row.
- 28:50SPEAKER_03: Twenty-nine unanswered points from the Vikings and just once they took the lead that was it.
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: Their their defense just blitzed and blitzed and blitzed, and the Packers had no response to it.
- 29:09SPEAKER_03: They did on one last drive that didn't count, um, of course.
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: Uh but it's hard to to come away and say, well, for the three quarters of the game we were in charge, and and you know, for that one quarter we weren't, because it's consistent now, and and I think if you look over the last six games, we've been outscored eighty-seven points to twelve in the fourth quarter.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: And that's a seventy-five point differential in the fourth quarter alone.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: Um so good questions need to be asked.
- 29:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yes, but look when they were um twenty-two, twenty-five, uh, seventeen up or twenty-two-seventeen up and three abysmal referee calls on third downs on the one drive, especially one for roughing the pass really didn't help.
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: But would it have made a difference?
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: Who knows?
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, we intercepted the ball in the end zone and the dodgy holding court, brought it all the way back again, and they go to a touchdown.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: Had they not scored that touchdown, would it be a better game?
- 30:13SPEAKER_03: If we'd not taken three points off the board when we got a a penalty after kicking a field goal to go for fourth and one and not win it, you know it's the whole bunch of if and but.
- 30:24SPEAKER_03: But if they cannot play football in the fourth quarter you're gonna have to be 25-30 points ahead when you're playing good teams.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: When you're playing the Bears, when you're playing the Chiefs, when you're playing the Broncos, if you're not 20-30 points ahead by three-quarter time, which there's nothing there, they just don't know how to finish out the game.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: So as much as I like uh Matt LaFleur, you know, he's got a lot of questions to answer with the way he pulled stuff up.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: The the defence looks alright, we've not got a running game.
- 30:57SPEAKER_03: I know Josh Jacobs might come back, I'm not sure I want him back given what he's uh misdemeanouring for.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: Not uh not the kind of person you really want floating around your football club.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: But yeah, so yeah, well, yeah, we beat the Jets this week, I'll be back on the Super Bowl track.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: But right now it's hard to see where the next win will come from.
- 31:23SPEAKER_04: Not all doom and gloom though, Pete.
- 31:25SPEAKER_04: Um Trace Mac landed a 59 yard shield goal to open his uh his account in the NFL.
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: He yeah I probably missed an extra point when we scored a touchdown, right?
- 31:37SPEAKER_04: So well, I think you've got to put a few things in into perspective.
- 31:43SPEAKER_04: You're obviously missing, you know, arguably your best player is still out injured.
- 31:49SPEAKER_04: Jacobs is suspended, Jordan Love was playing behind three new starters on the O-line.
- 31:55SPEAKER_04: Um yeah, it's um it's a tough tough start to the season for the Packers, isn't it?
- 32:02SPEAKER_04: Um you know, particularly given you've lost to Carson, you know, Carson Vince by all um well, I mean Carson Vince is is probably a better quarterback than Kyler Murray anyway, in some people's opinion.
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: Uh it it wasn't that.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: Um it was just the nature of they blitzed and and I know that's what Minnesota do.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: Um so Minnesota blitzed 79% of the time against the Packers, and the next nearest one to that was the Eagles, who were 49% of the time.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: Um so you knew what was coming.
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: You knew it was coming all the time.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: And the O-line couldn't stop it.
- 32:41SPEAKER_03: And and even you watch when they tried to plug the gaps, the running backs, the full backs, they were just getting run over the top.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: Uh and something has to be done.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: And and if it's not done, it's gonna be a very long season.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: Um and and yeah.
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, you're right, it's not all doom and doom, right?
- 33:01SPEAKER_03: Christian Watson.
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: As I said, six catches for 147 yards is a pretty good game, plus two touchdowns, right?
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: Um but if you can't put games away, you're not even gonna make the playoffs this year.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: So uh and not not in this division, right?
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: And and what we'll be able to see is how good were the Vikings when they played Chicago this week.
- 33:24SPEAKER_04: So that'll be interesting this week.
- 33:26SPEAKER_04: Just looking at it, Pete, your third down conversion, three out of twelve.
- 33:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 33:31SPEAKER_04: You're not winning games unless you improve that, and obviously um, you know, zero out of two on fourth down.
- 33:39SPEAKER_04: But you you were actually only sacked four times, but I I under you know appreciate that they put in Jordan Love under a lot of uh a lot of pressure.
- 33:48SPEAKER_04: So there's a there's a lot for the Packers to go away and work on, I would think, after a big one.
- 33:53SPEAKER_03: I I don't want to bang on about the refs, but you know, we had 12 penalties for 98 yards, and all I asked for is consistency.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: You know, if you're gonna give roughing the passers one way, you've got to give them the other when the same thing happens.
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: And you know the conspiracy theories are abound about what people want.
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: I I watched the the Chiefs game today and Patrick Mahomes ran the first touchdown in from uh twenty-odd yards, but the most holdingist of holds from planet hold you will ever see by Travis Kelsey to get him over the line was just totally ignored by the referees.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: And it's like you know, what are you guys doing?
- 34:37SPEAKER_03: Uh you look at the hold that on the intercepted pass and and the guy near ne never touched it, barely touched him, and he was called for a hold.
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: And he was called for a hold after the interception as well.
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: So it's so frustrating.
- 34:48SPEAKER_03: Um I could argue, right, why don't we use the technology in baseball you call for questioning decisions in the NRL here?
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: You can have a captive challenge over bad recovering decisions.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: There, it's there's enough technology and yet they don't use it as well as they should.
- 35:04SPEAKER_03: But we'll see after this week.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: But major warning signs are the Green Bay Packers then.
- 35:13SPEAKER_03: So uh let's talk about uh a couple of other um big winners coming up are the Baltimore Ravens.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: We talked about them last week, about them this is their year for them to show out.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: Now, Matt, you mentioned they've got a couple of injuries coming out, um, but they put 506 yards up against Indianapolis.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: So Lamar Jackson, 324 of them.
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 35:37SPEAKER_04: Derek Derek Henry had a day as well on the ground, didn't he?
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: He didn't fumble for a change as well.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: So, you know.
- 35:45SPEAKER_04: So so there's two takeaways from that Baltimore defense as well, which we know is um is very, very tough.
- 35:53SPEAKER_04: So look, I think Indianapolis flattered to deceive at the start of last season, and they were one of the clubs we were scratching our head uh about a little bit.
- 36:03SPEAKER_04: But yeah, to your point, Pete, the um total yardage in this game, 506 to the Ravens, 251 to the to the Colts.
- 36:14SPEAKER_04: Um, and Daniel uh Jones had a had a very bad day at the office, 19 out of 31 for 166 yards, one touchdown and one interception in his first game back from that Achilles tear.
- 36:28SPEAKER_04: So um yes, um I would imagine the um the Colts are looking at a lot of tape this week.
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: Yes, yes.
- 36:37SPEAKER_03: Uh I guess the other other big winner, although we might have to take this one with a piece of pinch of salt, would be the Jags, as they beat the Browns thirdly for ten.
- 36:47SPEAKER_03: Um Trevor Lawrence threw four touchdowns and no interceptions.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: So whether that might not be hard against the Browns, we should say.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: Still impressive, but yeah, it's it is the Browns.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: It's a good game to have the the the start of the season.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Um unlike um the start of the season for a couple of others, like the Cardinals versus the Chargers.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: What happened there?
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: Well, so the Chargers would be one of the big losers of the week, right?
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: Not because they lost by a lot, but they lost to uh uh to Mike Lafleur's Cardinals.
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: So 117 yards of offense in the second half with the Chargers.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's just unbelievable.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: I've only seen the highlights, but I just it didn't look natural.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: You know, the the the Chargers weren't moving up and down the the field and the Cardinals were, so it just and and and I've learned learned the name Jacoby Brissett, no, because he was completely outplayed Justin Herbert.
- 37:59SPEAKER_03: So um rookie teaching the old man a lesson.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: But that was uh that probably that's the surprising result of the week, right?
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: As you said earlier, Matt, the Titans aren't massively brilliant.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: Uh and so the Jets beating them is probably not considered an upset, but the Chargers did alright last year.
- 38:20SPEAKER_04: They were nine and a half point underdogs in that game, the Cardinals against the Chargers.
- 38:27SPEAKER_04: Feels like a couple of uh Southern California teams need to go and have a little bit of a think about how they approach their week one games this week.
- 38:38SPEAKER_04: Talking of um um former Southern California teams, congratulations to Mr.
- 38:44SPEAKER_04: Kirk Cousins.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: 300th touchdown pass.
- 38:50SPEAKER_04: He had himself a little bit of an afternoon, 21 out of 30, 160 yards, three touchdowns, did throw a couple of picks in there, but um more than enough in the tank to get them past the Dolphins.
- 39:03SPEAKER_04: So uh um Kirk's off and running.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: Good on him, yeah.
- 39:08SPEAKER_04: And uh Joe Burrow had a game as well, I think, for uh Joe Burrow did uh Dark Horse uh Bengals carry.
- 39:14SPEAKER_04: Um that that's a half decent win over the Bucks, and Burrow was 25 out of 35 for 254.
- 39:23SPEAKER_04: Um so uh their defence uh that newly revamped Bengals defence, which we uh we paid particular attention to in those um off-season moves, they forced four turnovers.
- 39:37SPEAKER_04: Um so um yeah, I think I've I I've got a sneaky little fancy for the Bengals to um be a surprise package this season.
- 39:47SPEAKER_03: I think so too, but uh I I think quarterback of the week, if it's not um Caleb Williams, may go to our sleeper.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: Um and I said last week if they managed to beat the Lions, I would get out the cards.
- 40:05SPEAKER_03: Probably I could get get out the cardboard cutout.
- 40:08SPEAKER_03: Um and the only reason they didn't tie with the Lions is because they decided in overtime to go for a two-point conversion after coming back from 21-0.
- 40:20SPEAKER_03: Um, the New Orleans Saints lost 31-30 or 32-31 to the Detroit Lions.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: Tyler Schuff 35 of 56 for 410 yards.
- 40:34SPEAKER_03: Now, before we get carried away with that, he threw two interceptions and he also lost a fumble in the very same game.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: Um everyone knows my opinion of Detroit.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: Um, that's not a great start for them.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: It's it's a W.
- 40:53SPEAKER_01: You're right.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: This is where you all agree with me.
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: Uh my team's the only zero and one in the NFC North, and I'm just trying to cling on to something that makes the rest look crap.
- 41:02SPEAKER_03: Um so so the question is if if I'll stand by again if the if he has a good game this week, we'll definitely bring out the Tyler Shuff corner, retire the Shadur Sanders one who looks like he'll be back in week three the way Deshaun Watson's playing.
- 41:16SPEAKER_03: Um and track it, but 410 yards on debut.
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 41:24SPEAKER_03: Um should you be worried if that's if you're the Detroit defense?
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's a rookie, right?
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: You should be all the um plus you know, m make people um think twice, but yeah, it's uh um that's a lot of points to me from the Saints.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: That that's what it sounds like.
- 41:47SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's more than you know you'd expect from Detroit on on week one against the Saints.
- 41:54SPEAKER_01: But um, you know, but the the league as a whole had a lot of points this first uh week of the season, so maybe it's just in the water this year.
- 42:03SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 42:06SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 42:07SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 42:08SPEAKER_03: That's uh that's a that's a good summary of last week's game.
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: Some winners, some losers in there, some sleepers to watch.
- 42:13SPEAKER_03: Um I think the Bengals and the Giants are probably the sleepers in there, which we all predicted that might have a not well breakout season, let's call it that, a a surprise season.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: But the biggest win uh this weekend, 128.66 to 118.96, is our fantasy team.
- 42:36SPEAKER_04: Oh, yes, we're gonna be.
- 42:37SPEAKER_03: We won our first game, gentlemen.
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: We won our first game.
- 42:42SPEAKER_04: We need to congratulate ourselves deeply for all of the thought that went into picking that William roster.
- 42:48SPEAKER_03: Yes, I mean, Caleb Williams was not our top scorer.
- 42:54SPEAKER_03: Um that went to Christian McCaffrey.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: Um, followed by Justin Jefferson and then Caleb Williams.
- 43:02SPEAKER_03: So from a league.
- 43:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, from a league perspective, we sit one and oh, we sit in third place.
- 43:09SPEAKER_03: Um uh Jacob's finest team is a top because they scored 158 points.
- 43:15SPEAKER_03: Um and Egon Luz Express sits above us with a who they scored 138.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: So um we'll keep an eye on who we've got next week, but we've opened with a one and oh.
- 43:27SPEAKER_03: So uh our automatic picked uh fantasy team is off the mark.
- 43:34SPEAKER_03: And uh I also ended a team, there's there's there's two types of leagues you can play in.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: There's the head to head, or there's one where they pick eleven teams and the lowest scorer goes out at the end of each week.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: So I I had a go at drafting one of those teams.
- 43:48SPEAKER_04: Um that season's already all over.
- 43:52SPEAKER_03: It was about to be, but thankfully on the game we haven't talked about, Kenneth Walker the third beat the Denver Broncos.
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: Um And he was in my he was in my team.
- 44:01SPEAKER_03: I went from last to third in the league.
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: So um so so uh let's just touch on Monday night football then before we go into the to next week's games.
- 44:12SPEAKER_03: The Chiefs are back.
- 44:14SPEAKER_03: Um they might have got the ropes on their side again.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: Um but Kenneth Walker just tore apart the Broncos, absolutely ran them racket, hundred and plus 150 plus yards uh today.
- 44:28SPEAKER_04: 173, I think it was.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: 173 all up, yes, and a and a couple of touchdowns as well thrown in for good measure, I think.
- 44:36SPEAKER_03: Um I predicted the Chiefs to make the Super Bowl this year.
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: Feeling good about that, huh?
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: Well I am if the refs are gonna miss holds like they did with Travis Kelsey as as well.
- 44:51SPEAKER_03: Um they looked okay.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: Um Holmes was didn't look as nimble.
- 44:56SPEAKER_03: He probably looked like he needed a bit more match practice.
- 44:59SPEAKER_03: Um they got to him a lot, um, so that's why the running game worked particularly well.
- 45:05SPEAKER_03: But the Broncos, ooh dear.
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: Uh I know that's uh Kerry, they were one of your big tips.
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: They did not look good at all today.
- 45:15SPEAKER_01: At all.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: My um my thought was that you know they've got such a good side and you know, um, you know, so well coached um that they're just solid.
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: They didn't look solid at all.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: They looked leaky, they didn't look like they um had an offense at all.
- 45:36SPEAKER_01: So um yeah, maybe uh I'm I'm wrong on the Broncos.
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: Only one game, but and and and it is the Chiefs.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: So if this were any other year, we'd be going, oh, it's just the Chiefs, you gotta expect that.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: But yeah, off the back of last year.
- 45:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know.
- 45:57SPEAKER_03: I just don't know with the Broncos.
- 46:01SPEAKER_03: I I think they may have they may have uh flattered to deceive last year, and losing Bo Nicks towards the end probably overcame a very, very poor performance in the in the championship game against the Patriots.
- 46:16SPEAKER_04: He's probably gonna need a few games, as we talked about with Mahomes, they're probably both gonna need a few games to get back into the swing of things following their respective injuries.
- 46:29SPEAKER_04: Excuse me.
- 46:30SPEAKER_04: Um it is a statement win for the you know for the Chiefs after missing the playoffs last year.
- 46:37SPEAKER_04: Um probably the Broncos will be disappointed, but um I think my final words on week one, gentlemen, are it's only week one.
- 46:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you you say that when your team backed up 59 points, right?
- 46:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 46:54SPEAKER_04: Well, I I'm I'm left that isn't the biggest takeaway for me from that game.
- 47:00SPEAKER_04: It's the points we conceded on um on defense to probably not one of the most dangerous uh teams in the NFL.
- 47:08SPEAKER_04: But um yeah, it's just week one.
- 47:11SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, we'll see the LA teams bounce back, I'm sure.
- 47:17SPEAKER_04: Um we'll see the Packers bounce back, I'm sure we'll see the Broncos um put out a better performance.
- 47:26SPEAKER_04: And um you know he's not mentioned the cable with Terry.
- 47:32SPEAKER_01: We've got we've got the commanders, and I just don't know if we're gonna bounce back or they put up a good show against the Eagles going down by a couple of things.
- 47:42SPEAKER_01: They look great, yeah.
- 47:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 47:44SPEAKER_01: They look great, and I think oof.
- 47:46SPEAKER_01: So they just squeak by now.
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: I didn't think the Eagles played like spectacular, but still I've said again another one of my big shouts is they won't make well something like that.
- 47:56SPEAKER_03: Anyway, um neither we'll based on on week one's performance, let's bring it back to that.
- 48:03SPEAKER_03: Yes, the Packers won't make it either.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: So um we'll we'll dust ourselves up and we'll go through some games now about what's coming up and see if we get some positivity back into week two.
- 48:13SPEAKER_03: But if it gets to week six and Matt's on his podcast on the uh on his own, you'll understand where me and Kerry are coming from.
- 48:19SPEAKER_03: Yes, because we've just me and them out.
- 48:21SPEAKER_04: Me and the fantasy league team.
- 48:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's right.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: Just win it.
- 48:26SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 48:27SPEAKER_03: So, gentlemen, let's have a look at the games.
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: We've actually got a quite uh a very interesting game at Highmark Stadium on Friday morning, which is the Buffalo Bills and the Detroit Lions.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: That's the game of the week.
- 48:42SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be good.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: It's a good way to open up the week.
- 48:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: What it what have we got to do?
- 48:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, let's see if the well, first thought is will the um plane service hold up?
- 48:54SPEAKER_04: Um let's really hope that it does.
- 48:57SPEAKER_04: Um both teams are one and oh.
- 49:00SPEAKER_04: Um I'm sure it'll be a good one.
- 49:05SPEAKER_04: You can only you can only win.
- 49:08SPEAKER_03: You can only get it.
- 49:12SPEAKER_04: And that that means you win.
- 49:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 49:14SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, so um it'll be uh it'll be a spectacle, I'm sure, at high mark, because the stadium itself looks uh looks beautiful.
- 49:23SPEAKER_04: I'm sure Chris will be there.
- 49:24SPEAKER_04: First game, right?
- 49:25SPEAKER_04: First game in there.
- 49:26SPEAKER_04: Uh first game at home, yeah.
- 49:28SPEAKER_04: So historical.
- 49:29SPEAKER_04: Um incidentally, um Buffalo are favoured as$1.49 favourites in that game.
- 49:37SPEAKER_04: Um the Lions uh at$2.70.
- 49:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:41SPEAKER_03: So so we we're all thinking Buffalo for that, right?
- 49:46SPEAKER_04: I think at home it would be hard to uh find a way not to.
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: Very good.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: Yep, same.
- 49:54SPEAKER_03: Very good.
- 49:55SPEAKER_03: So we opened up our uh next week's games starting on Monday with the Texans against the Bengals.
- 50:01SPEAKER_03: That's another uh curious one.
- 50:05SPEAKER_03: At the NRG Stadium.
- 50:10SPEAKER_03: Terry.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: Still back in your Texans?
- 50:14SPEAKER_01: No, no.
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: Look, um Burrow looks so good.
- 50:18SPEAKER_01: I I think they're gonna have a hard time uh with this game.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: So I'm not I'm not predicting a bounce back.
- 50:24SPEAKER_01: I think they'll still fare well.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: It just depends on how well that Bengals defense does.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: Um, but right now I would say the Bengals may squeak by that one.
- 50:37SPEAKER_01: But only squeak.
- 50:38SPEAKER_01: Hopefully, the Texans are at least showing up.
- 50:41SPEAKER_03: What do you think, Matt?
- 50:42SPEAKER_01: Which I think they won't.
- 50:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think I'm gonna stick with the Texans.
- 50:47SPEAKER_04: Um the game is in Houston.
- 50:51SPEAKER_04: Um I think they played a good team in week one.
- 50:57SPEAKER_04: Um the Bills, and that game was you know, it was close.
- 51:02SPEAKER_04: Um, and as we talked about, you know, Houston did have the ball for a lot of the games, so they have shown us that they have the ability to control football games, which is a good sign.
- 51:16SPEAKER_04: Um, I think um it'll be a very, very good game.
- 51:20SPEAKER_04: I would actually argue probably as good a game as the uh Lions and the Bills, but I think I'm going to keep an eye on not just Joe Burrow, but this new Cincinnati defense.
- 51:33SPEAKER_04: And I think we've potentially got um a very interesting defensive battle on our hands.
- 51:38SPEAKER_04: We know the Texans are a good uh team on the defensive side of the ball.
- 51:43SPEAKER_04: I think the Bengals are going to emerge as a bit of a powerhouse in that space as well this season.
- 51:49SPEAKER_04: But I'm still gonna stick with the um the Texans just to get home narrowly in this one.
- 51:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I I think so too.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: So so that's that's two to one carry.
- 51:59SPEAKER_03: We'll tip the Texans on that one.
- 52:01SPEAKER_03: Uh I think the first game at home, I think CJ Stroud should still be on a bit of a roll.
- 52:06SPEAKER_03: He did play well, um, got beaten by the Bills.
- 52:09SPEAKER_03: So we'll see.
- 52:11SPEAKER_03: Let's uh let's move on quickly.
- 52:13SPEAKER_03: Uh to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field against the Vikings.
- 52:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think uh Soldier Field the Bears should and are rightly favoured.
- 52:26SPEAKER_04: I don't think it'll be easy.
- 52:28SPEAKER_04: I think we'll score points again.
- 52:31SPEAKER_04: Um if uh Vence is quarterback, I favor Caleb to uh Shepherd his team to more points than Carson Bence.
- 52:43SPEAKER_03: I think so too.
- 52:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 52:46SPEAKER_03: I I if you can cope with the blitz, the consistent blitzing, um I think you'll beat Minnesota.
- 52:55SPEAKER_04: R O line is strong, and if I trust anyone to um produce a game plan of magic to get around uh full frontal assault like that, I trust Ben Johnson.
- 53:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and and and Caleb's got legs, right?
- 53:13SPEAKER_01: He'll just move around and you know they've got Tom there.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm with you.
- 53:18SPEAKER_01: Bears will um make that happen again.
- 53:23SPEAKER_01: Not cardiac, I think they'll they'll actually do it very well.
- 53:28SPEAKER_03: Yes, I I think so too.
- 53:30SPEAKER_03: I I I think they're they're they're gonna surprise a few people this year, even though somebody said they'd go from worst to first, or first to worst here.
- 53:37SPEAKER_03: I can't remember.
- 53:38SPEAKER_03: Anyway, let's move on.
- 53:39SPEAKER_03: Um this one should be easy.
- 53:41SPEAKER_03: The Titans at Nissan Stadium against the Eagles.
- 53:45SPEAKER_03: Um Eagles all day long for that.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 53:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:49SPEAKER_03: Um simple.
- 53:50SPEAKER_03: We'll move on to our almost cardboard cutout at Tyler Schuff's New Orleans Saints at M and T Bank Stadium against the Baltimore Ravens.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: So Ravens for me.
- 54:01SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 54:02SPEAKER_03: I think uh we've got an all day long there.
- 54:05SPEAKER_03: Um we're going to the MetLife Stadium next.
- 54:08SPEAKER_03: For the Jets against the Packers Packers.
- 54:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think I think the bounce back game.
- 54:18SPEAKER_04: I mean the Jets put away the Titans, which is I mean, I might be wrong.
- 54:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, everyone could put them away.
- 54:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we'll we'll see how professional they were and we'll see how the Greenby's O-line can cope.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: Because I'm pretty sure the Jets the Jets will be blitzing from the start, the very start of the game.
- 54:38SPEAKER_04: You're heavily favoured um by the sports book in this game, Pete.
- 54:43SPEAKER_04: $1.45 favourites.
- 54:45SPEAKER_03: So um right, because you would expect that.
- 54:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 54:49SPEAKER_03: Yes, very good.
- 54:50SPEAKER_03: Then we'll move on to Carolina uh at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against the Falcons.
- 55:00SPEAKER_04: I think the Falcons are on struggle street.
- 55:04SPEAKER_04: Tua is injured, um Pennyx is injured, um, they've got no pass rush.
- 55:12SPEAKER_04: So third string quarterback, no pass rush equals tough times.
- 55:17SPEAKER_04: I think you could pretty much you could probably throw almost every team in the league with the exception of the Browns and the Titans.
- 55:28SPEAKER_04: The Titans in front of Atlanta.
- 55:30SPEAKER_04: And I would think they would fancy their chances.
- 55:33SPEAKER_04: So Carolina are gonna get up in this one.
- 55:36SPEAKER_03: It's a great follow-up game from being hammered by the Bears for Carolina.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: I think they'll they'll snap back.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: Cooper Rush, former cowboy, pretty good, but still a backup quarterback.
- 55:52SPEAKER_01: I think it's uh Panthers.
- 55:53SPEAKER_01: Panthers aren't.
- 55:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the next one won't take too long either.
- 55:56SPEAKER_03: Um at Raymond James Stadium, the Bucks uh against the uh Cleveland Browns.
- 56:01SPEAKER_03: Uh well just the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on that one.
- 56:05SPEAKER_03: I think Bucks.
- 56:06SPEAKER_03: Because the Browns are dog shit.
- 56:09SPEAKER_03: Oh no.
- 56:10SPEAKER_04: Well, Deshaun can do worse this week than he did last week.
- 56:13SPEAKER_03: Yes, here's an interesting one.
- 56:17SPEAKER_03: Here is an interesting one.
- 56:18SPEAKER_03: At Gillette Stadium, the New England Patriots against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 56:27SPEAKER_01: I think the Patriots Patriots still, but it's closer than it should be.
- 56:37SPEAKER_03: Sneak this.
- 56:38SPEAKER_03: You uh you guys didn't watch the game.
- 56:40SPEAKER_03: How poor New England were.
- 56:42SPEAKER_03: I mean poor, poor.
- 56:45SPEAKER_03: Um just go back and watch the highlights, you'll see a uh Romeo Dobbs looked a shadow of his water.
- 56:53SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 56:54SPEAKER_03: So um Yeah.
- 56:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'll look I'll I'll tip the Patriots because we've gone you two have gone there, but uh having said how poor they were, Pete, they only lost by three points to the Super Bowl champs in Seattle, which is probably a good one.
- 57:12SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, yeah.
- 57:15SPEAKER_03: They adjusted well to playing against them.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: But Drake May was awful.
- 57:20SPEAKER_03: Absolutely awful.
- 57:22SPEAKER_03: Anyway, uh so uh another um interesting matchup at SoFi Stadium, the Chargers against the Raiders.
- 57:32SPEAKER_03: Now the Chargers have just been beaten by the Cards, and the Raiders have just beaten the Dolphins.
- 57:38SPEAKER_03: So you might ask, you know, in the absence of nothing, there's something going on there, right?
- 57:45SPEAKER_03: Is it the Raiders or is it the Chargers?
- 57:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, which one?
- 57:50SPEAKER_01: I I'm Chargers, but why?
- 57:53SPEAKER_01: Because I don't have any uh you know evidence of any difference.
- 57:57SPEAKER_01: It's better.
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: I know I'm going against Kurt.
- 58:00SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 58:00SPEAKER_03: It's better and quarterback against veteran quarterback, right?
- 58:03SPEAKER_03: Just to know that yes, the Kurt Cousin.
- 58:06SPEAKER_03: Um that's right.
- 58:08SPEAKER_03: Uh I'll I'll I'll let Matt with the deciding vote.
- 58:10SPEAKER_03: I think the Raiders might take this.
- 58:11SPEAKER_03: I think Raiders?
- 58:13SPEAKER_04: No, I I think the Chargers will bounce back there at home.
- 58:17SPEAKER_04: I I think the Chargers, albeit the fact that they lost to the Cardinals, I think that's week one Rust.
- 58:24SPEAKER_04: I think the Chargers are a completely different kettle of fish to the Dolphins, no pun intended.
- 58:30SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 58:31SPEAKER_03: Like okay.
- 58:33SPEAKER_03: Well, gents, I realise we're coming up to the hour, so we'll have to be fairly quick on the on the next ones, but uh we could probably whisk through these.
- 58:40SPEAKER_03: Um 49ers against the Dolphins.
- 58:44SPEAKER_04: 49ers.
- 58:46SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 58:47SPEAKER_03: The Cowboys against the Commanders.
- 58:50SPEAKER_03: Cowboys.
- 58:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think the Cowboys should bounce back.
- 58:53SPEAKER_03: They should bounce back.
- 58:55SPEAKER_01: They should bounce back, but uh the commanders look good, so uh, but I'm going to.
- 59:00SPEAKER_03: Well, did they?
- 59:01SPEAKER_03: LSU number five, Jaden Daniels didn't set the world alight again, neither did he.
- 59:05SPEAKER_03: Um the Cardinals against the Seahawks.
- 59:10SPEAKER_03: Seahawks.
- 59:11SPEAKER_03: Seahawks.
- 59:12SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 59:12SPEAKER_03: Uh Kansas City against Indianapolis.
- 59:16SPEAKER_04: KC.
- 59:17SPEAKER_03: Now, yeah, KC.
- 59:20SPEAKER_03: Uh the Los Angeles Rams against the sleeper New York Giants.
- 59:25SPEAKER_03: The Rams are bouncing back.
- 59:27SPEAKER_03: Oh, you've got a lot of bounce back teams this this week.
- 59:30SPEAKER_03: And then the Monday night bubble at its good.
- 59:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 59:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 59:35SPEAKER_04: So they're very, very short price favourites as well for that, Peter, on the sportsbook.
- 59:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 59:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 59:41SPEAKER_03: But you saw the play last week.
- 59:43SPEAKER_03: Matthew Stafford only threw for 155 yards.
- 59:45SPEAKER_03: That's atrocious.
- 59:47SPEAKER_04: He's old, he needs to.
- 59:48SPEAKER_04: I'm stiff when I get out of bed in the morning.
- 59:52SPEAKER_04: He's just got off a plane.
- 59:54SPEAKER_03: He's only just got off a plane.
- 59:55SPEAKER_04: Give the guy a break.
- 59:56SPEAKER_04: He'll be fine.
- 59:57SPEAKER_03: So one last game, and it's another one that that could be interesting.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_03: Um, the Denver Broncos against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_01: That was a tough one.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: That one's really tough.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_01: Coin flip.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_04: It's um it's a mile high, so I'm going to.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_03: They were poor today.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_03: They were poor.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_04: I want yeah, I want to say Jacksonville.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, let's say Jacksonville is the upset.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_04: Come on.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_03: Let's log it in.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_03: All right, that's our 16 tips.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_03: Last week we got uh 10, I think.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_03: 10 out of 16.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_03: And who who'd have thought the Jets were gonna bloody win?
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_04: Um nobody would have thought nobody would have thought the Cardinals either.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_03: So um the Vikings.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_03: But hey, here we go.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_03: Only week one.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_03: I like it.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_03: It is early week one.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_01: So still hope.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_03: So let's keep up alive.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, let's go into the next week with full of optimism and and and hope that uh all of our teams are one on one by the end of next week.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_03: So good effort, guys.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_03: Thank you very much.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_03: Um let's uh look forward to week two, uh, we'll be back together uh next week.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_03: Thank you, everybody.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_00: That's a wrap on another episode of the Mostly Football Show.
