- 0:47[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody, Brian Smith here with the IM team series and the daily influence.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: Today, we're going to talk about mindfulness at work and one of the struggles that we have with mindfulness in our area of influence, especially with our clients.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: that are more, let's say, industrial strength, manufacturing, the trades, things like that.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: One of the challenges we have is a lot of the people think it's fluffy and it's rainbows and butterflies and mindfulness is about being soft or it's about, you know, having too much caring for others and it makes us weak.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: but it doesn't make us weak, mindfulness is not about those things, and it's about all those things.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what actually helps define it is that there is so much more to mindfulness.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: It is about other things like situation awareness, identifying what's going on with yourself, identifying what's going on with your peers, identifying what's going on in your area of influence,
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: And as you all know, because, well, either you have been following us or you have found us, we operate under a smart environment.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_01]: We have smart as a foundation.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: And to be mindful is to be smart, it's to understand where we're at in any particular moment.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever area of influence you find yourself in to be aware, to slow down and have awareness of that is being mindful.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: To listen, to learn, to listen to conversations between you and other people or oftentimes it's listening to conversations between other people.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: that you're not even a part of.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: You might be in the room.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: You might be in the area.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_01]: You might over here something and if you're mindful, then you might pick up on things that are very important.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_01]: You might find that you have something to add that will be a positive influence and provide for improvement.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: You might find that you can help somebody in a way that you never knew you can help them.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: This happens to me in the weirdest places.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: I have seen myself walking through airports being and grocery stores, seeing people struggle and because I try to be mindful in every environment that I am in, I find myself oftentimes being able to hold a door, give a smile, let somebody go in front of me because they look like they're struggling.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_01]: Mindfulness is not just about fluffy things.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's about
- 3:23[SPEAKER_01]: being intentional about where you're at and what you're doing.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_01]: And when we do that, mindfulness is easy.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's not something we even have to think about.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: It becomes a habit.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: It becomes a habit that makes us better humans, better peers, better partners, better friends.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't matter how that's defined in your area of influence or who it's defined with.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: Being mindful will make whatever connection you have between yourself and any living being.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: It could be your pet.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: When you're mindful, you are more in tune with them.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, when you do that with them, they're more in tune with you.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_01]: Mindfulness is also about sharing.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_01]: When you open yourself up to others.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: even a closed-off person over time in over consistency, which is part of mindfulness, we'll begin to open themselves up to you, trust is built when things and we are mindful.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: We build this level of communication, this level of influence between ourselves and those people that were mindful with, that begins to provide trust for us.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: And trust in relationships moves us
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: exponentially forward.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_01]: And it doesn't matter what you're doing with that person.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: It could be as simple as playing a game, having a simple conversation, but it moves a so much faster through the process of developing whatever relationship we're going to have.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_01]: And it could be as simple as opening the door, holding the door, passing on a positive thing that is later reflected on by that person who you'll never see again, but they'll remember the
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: And you will remember that your mindful, and you will remember that mindfulness is not about the soft squishy things that oftentimes we think mindfulness or some of these other intuitive or intentional practices that are trying to be introduced in our areas of influence for our culture.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: But it's just a way of life, it's a way of being, it's a way of just engaging with your area of influence, whatever it is in any given moment.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_01]: So if you want to apply mindfulness in your areas of influence at work, at home, have situational awareness, listen to learn, and engage.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: And when you do that mindfulness will come, trust will be built, and you will see your relationships grow beyond where you would ever expect them to.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk to you again later.
