- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome back, Return to Glory. Hunter with you by myself today.
- 0:10Speaker 1: We have reached... the halfway point through Nebraska's regular season.
- 0:35Speaker 1: A week ago, we felt like we, I'm not gonna
- 0:42Speaker 1: throw the word out there, but midway through that game
- 0:45Speaker 1: felt like we could be seeing some post-season. But after Indiana,
- 0:52Speaker 1: we will see where things head into the Oregon week.
- 0:55Speaker 1: I wanted to go through three different versions of expectation
- 1:01Speaker 1: setting here as we're halfway through the season through six
- 1:05Speaker 1: games so basically where we were at at the end
- 1:09Speaker 1: of the year last year and have to remember that
- 1:12Speaker 1: and then where we were at before the season opener
- 1:14Speaker 1: this year where the schedule looked like what the hype
- 1:17Speaker 1: was the all the unknowns and then where we're at
- 1:21Speaker 1: now with what we've actually seen and want to separate
- 1:26Speaker 1: what I guess what reasonable expectations were, um, here from
- 1:32Speaker 1: those three different timeframes. So starting, I guess, taking you
- 1:37Speaker 1: back to last year and I guess before I get
- 1:40Speaker 1: into that, the big reason I'm doing this, I, I,
- 1:42Speaker 1: I think the one thing I heard this week that
- 1:46Speaker 1: I really liked, right? Like when you, when you say
- 1:48Speaker 1: the word bowl game, I guess you just assume this
- 1:50Speaker 1: year we're going to make a bowl game after where
- 1:52Speaker 1: we've been at. And if you want to talk about
- 1:54Speaker 1: progress and where we're at under Matt rule, um, You know,
- 1:58Speaker 1: being 5-1 right now, I guess we just kind of
- 2:00Speaker 1: assume that. So I just think when you're thinking about
- 2:03Speaker 1: individual games and where you're at in a point of
- 2:05Speaker 1: the season, it's easy to forget, you know, recent history
- 2:09Speaker 1: and where maybe your head was at. And that can
- 2:12Speaker 1: kind of help get you a gauge on where things
- 2:14Speaker 1: are at moving forward. So last season, remember, we finished
- 2:18Speaker 1: the year very poorly, 7-6. Things were not looking good.
- 2:21Speaker 1: It was very dark and gloom. We got beat. 44
- 2:26Speaker 1: to 22 against Utah and got blown out in the
- 2:29Speaker 1: bowl game. And the off season was very quiet. There
- 2:32Speaker 1: wasn't a whole lot of words. It was season. The
- 2:35Speaker 1: schedule was going to be tough. Um, we knew we
- 2:37Speaker 1: had to, we had to find a quarterback because Dylan
- 2:40Speaker 1: Rayola leaves to Oregon and we bring in Anthony Calandria
- 2:44Speaker 1: and people were like, I think this could be good,
- 2:46Speaker 1: but we don't know. Uh, we, we always question, you know, what,
- 2:51Speaker 1: what kind of talent do we have on this roster? Well,
- 2:55Speaker 1: Bottom line is at the end of the season, we
- 2:57Speaker 1: wanted proof this year that things are still moving in
- 3:01Speaker 1: the right direction. And we're beating the teams we should beat.
- 3:06Speaker 1: We are making plays when we need to make plays.
- 3:11Speaker 1: We're not losing one score games anymore like we have.
- 3:14Speaker 1: And we wanted to see that. Well, after getting blown
- 3:16Speaker 1: out the last three games at the end of the year,
- 3:19Speaker 1: things are pretty gloom. And coming into the year, There was, yeah,
- 3:26Speaker 1: the typical August hype and where we were at. But
- 3:29Speaker 1: I think everybody just didn't have very high expectations. You
- 3:33Speaker 1: looked at the schedule. The first three games were the
- 3:36Speaker 1: easiest first three games in the entire country. And then
- 3:41Speaker 1: you knew things were going to get tough. Well, obviously,
- 3:46Speaker 1: just what you think is going to happen doesn't always happen.
- 3:49Speaker 1: We look really good. We take care of business those
- 3:50Speaker 1: three games. And, yeah, we should beat Maryland and we
- 3:53Speaker 1: should beat Michigan State. We did. And now we got
- 3:57Speaker 1: to Indiana and hoping we didn't get blown out to
- 4:03Speaker 1: the defending national champs actually probably should have won the game.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And for other reasons, as we talked about, it's frustrating
- 4:10Speaker 1: because we actually probably should have won that game, but
- 4:13Speaker 1: we didn't. And then you look at the rest of
- 4:15Speaker 1: the schedule where we're at. Things look promising. They look hopeful.
- 4:21Speaker 1: They look like maybe we can compete with everybody on
- 4:23Speaker 1: our schedule. Um, My view, I guess, coming out of
- 4:30Speaker 1: where we're at so far is, I'll use the word progress, right?
- 4:36Speaker 1: It's moving in the right direction. Is it everything we
- 4:39Speaker 1: hoped for? No, but I don't think if you asked anybody, well,
- 4:41Speaker 1: maybe a few people thought we could beat Indiana, but
- 4:44Speaker 1: nobody thought we were going to be 6-0 through the
- 4:47Speaker 1: first six games. And I would say if you polled
- 4:49Speaker 1: everybody beginning of the year, you're probably going to get
- 4:52Speaker 1: a lot of 4-2s and maybe some 5-1s there too,
- 4:56Speaker 1: but where we're at now at this point in the season,
- 5:01Speaker 1: you got to feel pretty decent about that. Now, a
- 5:06Speaker 1: lot of that hope and a lot of that, I guess,
- 5:10Speaker 1: thought process is also how these last six games in
- 5:13Speaker 1: our schedule, these teams have fared out as well. And
- 5:17Speaker 1: so you don't want to get overconfident, but I mean,
- 5:21Speaker 1: you look at our win total at six and a half.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I mean, If we don't get over that, it's not
- 5:30Speaker 1: going to be good, right? I think from what we've seen.
- 5:33Speaker 1: But now, this is what's hard, is the expectation of
- 5:37Speaker 1: winning eight games now is probably where everybody's heads are at.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And if we don't do that, the vibe of progress,
- 5:47Speaker 1: the vibe of how the season went is not going
- 5:48Speaker 1: to be very good. And just go through the rest
- 5:53Speaker 1: of our schedule and think about just winning six games
- 5:56Speaker 1: and not getting the win total over. Like, in order
- 6:01Speaker 1: to do that against the schedule, things are going to
- 6:04Speaker 1: be pretty bad. And I'm not saying that can't happen,
- 6:09Speaker 1: but it looks like we're on the path to, you know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: hitting the win total over for the first time since 2016.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And it looks like that we should be able to
- 6:18Speaker 1: win some of these games as we finish up. But
- 6:21Speaker 1: is that because of what we've done? Yeah, some of them.
- 6:23Speaker 1: I would say it's, but a lot of it's what
- 6:25Speaker 1: the other teams have shown against who they played and
- 6:29Speaker 1: how their performance, like you look at this Oregon game,
- 6:32Speaker 1: you would, you look at the preseason line and spread
- 6:36Speaker 1: on it. It was in the twenties. It was 24
- 6:37Speaker 1: to go on the road. Now it's this week is
- 6:41Speaker 1: at seven and a half. So yes, it's a lot
- 6:43Speaker 1: of what we've done, but it's also a lot of
- 6:44Speaker 1: what the other teams have not done. Just real quick,
- 6:50Speaker 1: going back to Indiana. And this is, as everybody's getting
- 6:54Speaker 1: over the Indiana hangover of the loss, I think what
- 6:59Speaker 1: it really shows is what that challenge was against Indiana.
- 7:03Speaker 1: It wasn't beyond reach. It obviously doesn't sit well by
- 7:09Speaker 1: not winning that game, but it also proves that those
- 7:12Speaker 1: first five wins of taking care of business, while not
- 7:15Speaker 1: everything was perfect, those first five wins weren't fake, right?
- 7:20Speaker 1: The things that we've done from... all the positions and,
- 7:25Speaker 1: and as a unit, offense, defense, special teams, and then
- 7:28Speaker 1: complimentary football, like all of that stuff is, is, is
- 7:31Speaker 1: right there, right? We're right with some of the top
- 7:35Speaker 1: teams in the country, at least Indiana, which again, I'll caveat,
- 7:40Speaker 1: I'll caveat Indiana with this. Maybe they go out and
- 7:44Speaker 1: get blown out by Ohio state and maybe they're not
- 7:46Speaker 1: a top 15 team. I don't know, but they obviously
- 7:50Speaker 1: know how to win. They, they haven't lost in forever.
- 7:53Speaker 1: And they're defending national champs. I think from a halfway standpoint, again,
- 7:59Speaker 1: vibes overall pretty good. And I think we, as we
- 8:08Speaker 1: think and evaluate everything, remember to take a step back
- 8:13Speaker 1: and remember where we were, where we're going. No, we're
- 8:16Speaker 1: not in the 12-0 top 10 team yet, category yet.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And someone asked me going into Indiana, When is the
- 8:24Speaker 1: return to glory box checked? I mean, you could argue
- 8:29Speaker 1: that I said national title, right? That's glory, being at
- 8:34Speaker 1: the top. We're obviously a long ways from that, but
- 8:36Speaker 1: I think making the playoffs is a good step. This
- 8:38Speaker 1: year's not super likely, but it's not out of the
- 8:41Speaker 1: question yet. We're still in that conversation, which if you
- 8:44Speaker 1: would have said that going into the year, you would
- 8:46Speaker 1: have thought you were silly, even though the record is
- 8:49Speaker 1: probably what you would expect. So, It's kind of a
- 8:52Speaker 1: weird year so far, and I do. I don't think
- 8:54Speaker 1: there's any dominant, dominant teams. And from a physicality standpoint,
- 9:00Speaker 1: I don't think we will physically get just drilled by anybody. Now,
- 9:07Speaker 1: we'll probably jinx that, and Iowa's going to do what
- 9:09Speaker 1: they do to us. But anyways, last thing here I'm
- 9:13Speaker 1: going to go through today is go through and grade
- 9:16Speaker 1: all of our positions through the first six games. And
- 9:22Speaker 1: all these grades, I guess, are based off of expectation
- 9:26Speaker 1: of what we expected of them coming in and then
- 9:29Speaker 1: how they performed. And just to remind everybody, I think
- 9:33Speaker 1: we're most, and just in general, everybody was at a
- 9:36Speaker 1: lot of question marks about running back room, what's going
- 9:39Speaker 1: to happen there, who's going to step up. Obviously, there
- 9:42Speaker 1: are three to four guys that were in that conversation.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Offensive line was said to maybe be the best offensive
- 9:51Speaker 1: line that we've had in a while, brought in some
- 9:53Speaker 1: transfers there. Defensive line was the big question mark, right?
- 9:57Speaker 1: We didn't know what we were going to get out
- 9:58Speaker 1: of those guys. Had a couple of transfers, linebackers, and
- 10:03Speaker 1: felt okay about them. And then secondary was probably where
- 10:06Speaker 1: we felt pretty good on the defensive end. Obviously, returning
- 10:09Speaker 1: both specialists from last year and then bringing in Anthony Calandria, quarterback. So... Yeah, again,
- 10:16Speaker 1: take your brain back to what you thought coming into
- 10:18Speaker 1: the year. That's where these grades are coming off of here.
- 10:20Speaker 1: So I'll start with Calandria. And as quarterback, I mean,
- 10:26Speaker 1: I'm going A +. I don't know exactly what. If
- 10:34Speaker 1: you didn't give it an A +, I guess why.
- 10:36Speaker 1: There's maybe a few throws that you missed, but the
- 10:39Speaker 1: dude's a playmaker. The dude changes the game with his legs.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I mean, look at his stat line. Obviously, he's had
- 10:45Speaker 1: a couple of picks, but the one pick, a couple
- 10:48Speaker 1: of picks weren't really his fault. I mean, he is
- 10:52Speaker 1: our team. He is the definition of what, I guess
- 10:57Speaker 1: in my mind, I like out of a quarterback at
- 10:59Speaker 1: the Division I level and the combination of his legs
- 11:02Speaker 1: and arm. And, you know, I think you win that
- 11:04Speaker 1: game against Indiana. That's that Heisman moment, and I think
- 11:07Speaker 1: he's in the Heisman conversation this week. There's not much
- 11:11Speaker 1: less A-plus for Calandria, A-plus for the quarterbacks. Running backs.
- 11:16Speaker 1: This is an interesting one. Jamal Rule himself, I think,
- 11:22Speaker 1: has jumped off the page as a lot better, but
- 11:27Speaker 1: the other two, I think, were right there. So because
- 11:29Speaker 1: of that, I'm going at a B, a solid B.
- 11:33Speaker 1: I think having Rule around gives you a go-to back,
- 11:39Speaker 1: a A dynamic back. The other two guys have done
- 11:43Speaker 1: about what we expected. There's depth there, which is good.
- 11:47Speaker 1: And the only concern, I guess, is what happened. I
- 11:50Speaker 1: guess this Indiana game is we couldn't really get a
- 11:52Speaker 1: run game going with the running backs. And was that
- 11:55Speaker 1: a focus of Indiana's defense? Or what happened there? Not sure.
- 11:59Speaker 1: But they obviously haven't performed exceptionally well every game. But
- 12:03Speaker 1: they've been very solid through six games. So I'll go
- 12:05Speaker 1: a solid B. Wide receivers. coming into the year, this
- 12:11Speaker 1: is another, I think kind of like the running backs,
- 12:13Speaker 1: but I mean, I'm going, I'm going as another solid
- 12:16Speaker 1: B here for them. Uh, quasi Gilmore has been the,
- 12:20Speaker 1: the surprise of this group and it has been a
- 12:23Speaker 1: go-to guy for Calandria. And let's last game. We saw
- 12:27Speaker 1: an Isaiah Hunter come in and contribute and, and Ja'Cory Barney,
- 12:31Speaker 1: I think it's been a little quiet, uh, than what
- 12:33Speaker 1: we thought, but a lot of that is because Gilmore's
- 12:37Speaker 1: come out and done a lot of good things. So, um,
- 12:41Speaker 1: I think we've had a lot of good moments from them.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I think they're obviously a really solid, deep group as well.
- 12:46Speaker 1: And a couple of the four, five, and six guys
- 12:49Speaker 1: have been there too. So a B for the wide receivers.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Tight end. This is another, I'm going just a solid B.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Luke Lindemeyer's been obviously that main guy that we're talking about,
- 13:04Speaker 1: but he's really been about it. I can't think of
- 13:07Speaker 1: any other tight ends doing much, but He's been a
- 13:10Speaker 1: good connection for Calandria. He's had some big-time blocks and
- 13:15Speaker 1: some big games with a lot of blocks that we've
- 13:19Speaker 1: heard from the coaches. Again, I think he's done a
- 13:25Speaker 1: little bit better than probably what we expected and is
- 13:27Speaker 1: meshing well with this offense with Calandria. Offensive line. To me,
- 13:39Speaker 1: C is what we expected, right, coming into the year.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And I think that's about what we have, given what
- 13:48Speaker 1: their expectations were. I'm going right at a C. There's
- 13:52Speaker 1: been some good moments. I also don't know that everything's
- 13:57Speaker 1: been great all the time. They've given up some pressure.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I think, you know, the Indiana lack of run game
- 14:05Speaker 1: falls back on the offensive line some there. I don't
- 14:09Speaker 1: think they've done a poor job, but because of the
- 14:13Speaker 1: higher expectations that we had for this offensive line group,
- 14:17Speaker 1: I definitely don't think they've exceeded expectations, but I also
- 14:21Speaker 1: think that they haven't done poor. So, a C for them.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Let's go to the defensive line here. Again, one of
- 14:31Speaker 1: the weaker expected groups coming in. I think we've gotten...
- 14:38Speaker 1: quite a bit of pressure, more than we probably expected
- 14:41Speaker 1: from them. And the way that we stopped Indiana's run
- 14:44Speaker 1: game is a big credit to this defensive line. I'm
- 14:47Speaker 1: going to go a solid. I'll even bump it up
- 14:50Speaker 1: for this. No, we'll stay at a solid B for
- 14:54Speaker 1: them as well. Again, expectation-wise, a lot of question marks.
- 15:00Speaker 1: These guys have done better than I think we thought.
- 15:03Speaker 1: We've generated some sacks here. in these games, especially against
- 15:07Speaker 1: Maryland and Michigan State, and got home a lot there.
- 15:10Speaker 1: And a lot of this is obviously credit to the
- 15:12Speaker 1: coaching staff and Rob Orch and what he's doing. But,
- 15:16Speaker 1: I mean, this Indiana game, I think, was a big,
- 15:19Speaker 1: big evidence here of what this defense, and in whole,
- 15:24Speaker 1: but specifically defensive line, has done through the year. Linebackers.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And And more of the same as the defensive line.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I thought this group was supposed to be pretty solid.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I'll go B- with them. With Shambliss, Shavers, Dexter Foster.
- 15:51Speaker 1: They've been pretty deep. We've stayed healthy. Obviously they've done
- 15:56Speaker 1: a good job. We've got a pick or two there
- 15:58Speaker 1: with that. And also they're part of the run game.
- 16:02Speaker 1: The pass rush. Stopping the run game. The pass rush.
- 16:05Speaker 1: And I'm doing their job there. So get an overall
- 16:08Speaker 1: pretty solid and then cornerbacks and safeties on the backend.
- 16:13Speaker 1: This is what's hard. Andrew Marshall has been really good.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I mean, he's been like a, almost a lockdown type guy.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Teams tested him early. He had gotten beat on one
- 16:24Speaker 1: or two plays, but the same time, I think this
- 16:27Speaker 1: is where some of these big plays can fall back
- 16:29Speaker 1: on the secondary. Um, And that's hard because we've had
- 16:33Speaker 1: really good moments. We've actually, I feel pretty confident in
- 16:35Speaker 1: this group still. But we did also coming into the year.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I'll go C +. I mean, just slightly better than
- 16:42Speaker 1: what I expected. But again, nothing bad about it. But
- 16:46Speaker 1: I think they've done their job well but just haven't
- 16:49Speaker 1: jumped off the page yet of what maybe they're capable
- 16:53Speaker 1: of doing. Kicking. Let's put both Archie and Kyle Cunanan
- 17:02Speaker 1: in the same group here. And that's kind of hard.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Archie had a good game against Indiana. He's averaging right
- 17:08Speaker 1: now 46.6 yards per punt. I think the coverage and
- 17:16Speaker 1: all that, if we throw in the punting and hole
- 17:18Speaker 1: and the place kicking, like it's been pretty solid overall.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Talk about Kyle Cunanan. I don't know. It's hard. The
- 17:27Speaker 1: field goal kicking is, I hope is not an issue.
- 17:29Speaker 1: We're actually catching snaps and making good snaps. That's a
- 17:33Speaker 1: step in the right direction from a few years ago.
- 17:35Speaker 1: I'll go a B- for the place kicking and punting overall.
- 17:45Speaker 1: That's probably even a little generous, maybe C +. It's
- 17:50Speaker 1: been good at times. Sometimes it's frustrating when you can't
- 17:55Speaker 1: make a field goal. But Archie's, I think, been better overall.
- 18:00Speaker 1: especially against Indiana. And when you flip the field, I
- 18:03Speaker 1: think that's really big there. So overall on the report
- 18:11Speaker 1: card here, if you go offense and defense and then overall,
- 18:16Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think that in combination of everything,
- 18:20Speaker 1: nobody's in the A category. I think there's still room
- 18:23Speaker 1: to prove that. I think the defense, in my mind,
- 18:29Speaker 1: with Rob Orch not knowing, I think they're probably at
- 18:32Speaker 1: a B for me. The Indiana game has helped that
- 18:36Speaker 1: a lot. I think you can maybe even go B-plus
- 18:38Speaker 1: with them, the way that that last game went. But
- 18:40Speaker 1: they've done a lot of really good things. They've forced
- 18:42Speaker 1: some sacks. They've got some turnovers. And done a lot
- 18:47Speaker 1: of really good things. We've had our big play moments
- 18:49Speaker 1: that have happened. But the defense has done a pretty
- 18:52Speaker 1: good job. And the offense, I think, it is right
- 18:54Speaker 1: in that same ballpark. I think, you know, when you
- 18:57Speaker 1: look from a point standpoint, you'd like to see maybe
- 18:59Speaker 1: more production at times, but I mean, if you go
- 19:02Speaker 1: B plus for them too, I think that's fair. They
- 19:07Speaker 1: overall have done better than we thought, you know, regardless
- 19:12Speaker 1: of what points and numbers look like. I do think
- 19:16Speaker 1: that the style that we're playing with, with Calandria and
- 19:20Speaker 1: the holders and offense has been, has been working for
- 19:25Speaker 1: the most part. And we've had some drives that have
- 19:27Speaker 1: stalled out, but I also think that we've been explosive.
- 19:30Speaker 1: We've been creative. We've really done a good job of
- 19:32Speaker 1: identifying our strengths and playing to that. So B-plus for them.
- 19:36Speaker 1: So yeah, overall as a team, I'm going B-plus overall.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Not jumping to that A category, but we've done a
- 19:42Speaker 1: lot of really good things so far. We've done what
- 19:44Speaker 1: we should do against teams that we thought. That Indiana game,
- 19:48Speaker 1: you know, I think, you can't give it an A
- 19:51Speaker 1: because we didn't win, but you're pretty encouraged with how
- 19:56Speaker 1: the flow of that game went and the style that
- 19:58Speaker 1: we played. So, again, overall B-plus for the Huskers so
- 20:01Speaker 1: far through six games. We haven't said that, guys, since
- 20:05Speaker 1: we've been doing this podcast. I really believe we haven't.
- 20:08Speaker 1: We have not. Exceeded expectations to this point in the
- 20:11Speaker 1: season like this in a long, long time. So got
- 20:19Speaker 1: to enjoy it, but obviously got to take care of
