- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, you got my curiosity piqued here, Jake. I know
- 0:05Speaker 1: we bump back in the 3 o'clock hour with Willie Nelson.
- 0:09Speaker 1: The mere fact that he's doing a hymn will a
- 0:11Speaker 1: circle be unbroken. Is this because we're getting ready to talk?
- 0:15Speaker 1: to Greg Tepper about the Baylor job or about Texas Tech?
- 0:19Speaker 1: Is that what this is all about here? Is that
- 0:21Speaker 1: what you're saying?
- 0:21Speaker 2: You know, I thought of your, I thought of your
- 0:23Speaker 2: comment yesterday about kind of the circle of parody in
- 0:26Speaker 2: the SEC.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Maybe that was an inspiration, but you guys, you guys
- 0:29Speaker 3: can choose to take it that direction.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Okay. Just, just, just, Double-checking on that. It is time
- 0:34Speaker 1: for our weekly conversation with Greg Tepper, the editor-in-chief of
- 0:38Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. First of all, and this
- 0:40Speaker 1: is apropos of nothing of football, I want to get
- 0:42Speaker 1: your thoughts on this. You're a parent of two boys.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Do both of them play sports? Yes.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Max is playing t-ball this year for the first time.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Okay. I read a story last hour about two parents
- 0:57Speaker 1: down in Sugar Land. who got into it in a
- 0:59Speaker 1: select girls 12-year-old softball game that led to blows, and
- 1:04Speaker 1: one guy hitting another guy with a metal drinking container,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and that guy got hospitalized, and the guy who swung
- 1:11Speaker 1: the container got sent to jail. So did the mom,
- 1:15Speaker 1: who is an assistant principal at Lamar Junior High School
- 1:19Speaker 1: in the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District. So I told Jake,
- 1:23Speaker 1: if the projections from Jerry Forrest are correct and Bastrop
- 1:27Speaker 1: winds up playing Lamar Consolidated in the bi-district, he better
- 1:31Speaker 1: be on his toes. But I was going to ask you,
- 1:33Speaker 1: you haven't encountered any parental issues in any of those
- 1:40Speaker 1: youth games, have you?
- 1:41Speaker 3: No, no. And my kids are, they're seven and four.
- 1:46Speaker 2: And so it's still relatively low stakes, although not as
- 1:49Speaker 2: low as you'd think.
- 1:50Speaker 3: And we haven't encountered that.
- 1:52Speaker 2: The biggest issue has been like snack time, like afterwards,
- 1:56Speaker 2: like as far as, oh, wait, like my son wanted
- 2:00Speaker 2: the blue sports drink instead of.
- 2:03Speaker 3: The green one or something like that. That's been the
- 2:06Speaker 3: most we've come up with it.
- 2:08Speaker 2: But yeah, now I will say before in a past life,
- 2:11Speaker 2: when I was in high school, my job, I was
- 2:14Speaker 2: a YMCA referee and I was a softball umpire for
- 2:19Speaker 2: the local softball team. And so I have immense respect
- 2:23Speaker 2: for officials because I have been there. I've been on
- 2:25Speaker 2: the business end of officials officiating there. YMCA basketball was,
- 2:30Speaker 2: you know, it was okay, especially like five and six-year-olds.
- 2:34Speaker 2: That was easy money. At the time, I was getting
- 2:37Speaker 2: paid $ 10 a.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Game, which was.
- 2:39Speaker 2: I was rolling it Saturdays. But then softball, yeah. Especially
- 2:45Speaker 2: when things got a little bit more competitive, the girls
- 2:47Speaker 2: got to be like 11 or 12. Then like, you know,
- 2:49Speaker 2: I had to be on my P's and Q's, but
- 2:51Speaker 2: I think it taught me important leadership lessons.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Okay. By one of our regular texters, our man CPAL said,
- 2:58Speaker 1: select ball is dangerous at times. How would you like
- 3:01Speaker 1: to teach their kids in school? Yeah, well, it's a
- 3:03Speaker 1: good question. Oh, man. Speaking of dangerous, all right. We'll
- 3:08Speaker 1: get back to Baylor in a moment. Let me start
- 3:11Speaker 1: with Texas Tech. Not only the loss, which of course
- 3:15Speaker 1: stunned some people, but it opened up Pandora's box of
- 3:19Speaker 1: all the comments with super booster donor Cody Campbell, chairman
- 3:23Speaker 1: of the Board of Regents, who had a few months
- 3:26Speaker 1: earlier in expressing frustration of the whole Brennan Sorsby thing,
- 3:30Speaker 1: said that, I think to paraphrase, when we're up 40 points,
- 3:34Speaker 1: this fall and throwing into the end zone in the
- 3:36Speaker 1: fourth quarter, you'll know we're not letting up or something
- 3:38Speaker 1: like that. So then they lose. And then he gets
- 3:43Speaker 1: a lot of grief from a lot of people about this,
- 3:46Speaker 1: including a young producer who I kind of almost likened
- 3:50Speaker 1: to Jake a little bit, about the same age, working
- 3:53Speaker 1: at the flagship station. They're a double T-97-3, just as
- 3:57Speaker 1: Jake works here at the flagship for the Hornets. And
- 3:59Speaker 1: his name is Brennan Riker. And on Saturday, after Cody
- 4:03Speaker 1: Campbell had posted this tweet, there is no excuse or
- 4:08Speaker 1: reason to lose a game like this. We have to
- 4:11Speaker 1: be better. That was his text. Riker says, for the
- 4:15Speaker 1: sake of the program and fan base, just stop talking.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Please stop tweeting. Now, think about that. That's a mid-20s
- 4:22Speaker 1: guy working as a producer at the flagship telling this
- 4:25Speaker 1: multi-billionaire booster to knock it off. So Campbell then responds with, yesterday,
- 4:33Speaker 1: how about for the sake of the program, everybody at
- 4:37Speaker 1: Texas Tech stops talking and doing interviews with WT973. Robert Gio,
- 4:42Speaker 1: let's discuss. Robert Giovinetti, he used to be part of
- 4:45Speaker 1: the radio network, works in the in the administration office.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So this thing looks like a little bit of a
- 4:51Speaker 1: brush fire out on the South Plains.
- 4:55Speaker 3: What? Like, what are we doing here? Like, this is so, like,
- 4:58Speaker 3: Cody Campbell.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Is at a point now where I wonder if somebody
- 5:08Speaker 2: needs to consider taking away his phone. I don't mean
- 5:12Speaker 2: any disrespect to the young man who started this, but
- 5:17Speaker 2: this guy's got 250 followers. It's not like Michael Irvin
- 5:23Speaker 2: is tweeting about you or someone with a... huge reach.
- 5:26Speaker 2: This is a producer at a local radio show. We
- 5:30Speaker 2: do not have to fight every battle. And especially, by
- 5:34Speaker 2: the way, respectfully, I think he's got a point. And
- 5:37Speaker 2: we talked about this whenever the Brennan Swordsby thing was
- 5:39Speaker 2: going on about how we felt like Texas Tech's message
- 5:44Speaker 2: discipline problem was one of the reasons that they got
- 5:48Speaker 2: into that, that the brand sort of thing became as
- 5:50Speaker 2: big as it was. And if everybody would have just
- 5:52Speaker 2: cooled off and taken a step back, then everything kind of,
- 5:56Speaker 2: it would have been a simmer, but it wouldn't have
- 5:57Speaker 2: been this boiling over that it was. And it appears
- 6:01Speaker 2: that no lessons were learned. Or if there were lessons,
- 6:05Speaker 2: the wrong lessons were learned. I just don't understand.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Is he bored?
- 6:11Speaker 2: That's the kind of thing that sometimes when I was
- 6:15Speaker 2: in my younger days and I would be on Twitter,
- 6:18Speaker 2: I'd be like, you know what?
- 6:19Speaker 1: I'm bored. I'll go.
- 6:21Speaker 2: start a fight i'll go tweet something just to get
- 6:23Speaker 2: a rise out of people you know and like now
- 6:27Speaker 2: it's like they're like i don't know i then i
- 6:29Speaker 2: turned 30 and like decided that that was the time
- 6:33Speaker 2: to put away childish things um i don't know it
- 6:35Speaker 2: is a bizarre situation and all i think it also
- 6:38Speaker 2: kind of speaks to maybe some of the underlying wobbliness
- 6:43Speaker 2: underneath texas tech's program that you know we put on
- 6:45Speaker 2: the cover of the magazine about how this is the
- 6:47Speaker 2: modern the way the modern college football machine operates well
- 6:50Speaker 2: okay if you pull pull back the curtain is it
- 6:53Speaker 2: just you know the the great oz back there like
- 6:56Speaker 2: what's going on there that if one loss is going
- 6:58Speaker 2: to suddenly send this program into turmoil then like was
- 7:03Speaker 2: your program that strong to.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Begin with and and and I don't know.
- 7:07Speaker 2: It's one of the things where that's one of the
- 7:09Speaker 2: dangers of having an outspoken booster who nobody can really
- 7:14Speaker 2: say no to kind of in a prominent position within
- 7:19Speaker 2: the program.
- 7:20Speaker 3: It's a bizarre situation that I.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I can't necessarily say is a master class in communications management.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:30Speaker 1: So maybe, maybe what you're suggesting is that Cody Campbell should,
- 7:34Speaker 1: should paraphrase the great and powerful Oz by saying, I'm
- 7:37Speaker 1: a good man. I'm a very bad wizard.
- 7:40Speaker 2: You know, let me, let me use a more modern
- 7:44Speaker 2: phrase for that. If, if, if that, if that movie
- 7:46Speaker 2: from the thirties is too dated, go touch some grass,
- 7:50Speaker 2: like just like, Chill out a little bit.
- 7:52Speaker 3: It's a very bizarre story.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Herm Edwards, don't hit send. Don't press send. Something like that.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Take a breath. And by the way, to Brennan Riker's credit,
- 8:03Speaker 1: he had, when he first tweeted this out, I think
- 8:05Speaker 1: 167 followers. Now he's up to 250. Hey, okay.
- 8:09Speaker 3: That's exponential growth.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Okay, all of that goofiness aside, that
- 8:16Speaker 1: was a damaging loss, obviously, for the Red Raiders. They
- 8:18Speaker 1: got Arizona this week. It's at home, but, I mean,
- 8:21Speaker 1: it's still a tough— one would imagine at this point they
- 8:24Speaker 1: may have to not only reach the Big 12 championship,
- 8:27Speaker 1: but perhaps just win the auto bid at this point.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Do you think that?
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, they're in an interesting spot because basically now
- 8:35Speaker 2: you have to consider where the Big 12 stands as
- 8:41Speaker 2: far as the rankings are concerned and kind of national profile.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Basically, are they going to get in that large bid
- 8:49Speaker 3: is the question. You know what I mean?
- 8:50Speaker 2: Now, I think the conference is strong enough to deserve
- 8:54Speaker 2: and warrant... a bid, right?
- 8:56Speaker 3: I mean, look up and down the ranked teams. Utah
- 8:59Speaker 3: is ranked. BYU is ranked. Arizona is ranked. Tech is ranked.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Oklahoma State is ranked. Houston, I believe, is still ranked, right?
- 9:07Speaker 3: It's a good conference.
- 9:09Speaker 2: But much like it's one of the things we talked
- 9:13Speaker 2: about as a real value in the offseason, that Texas
- 9:16Speaker 2: Tech schedule was lacking some of the real heavy hitters. Well,
- 9:21Speaker 2: now maybe you wish those heavy hitters were on there
- 9:24Speaker 2: because if you get to the end of the year
- 9:26Speaker 2: and you don't necessarily have the resume that you were
- 9:28Speaker 2: hoping for, and you're hoping for an out large fit
- 9:30Speaker 2: that may not be there for you because you didn't
- 9:32Speaker 2: go through and play some of the teams that were
- 9:35Speaker 2: at the top of the conference, right? You didn't go
- 9:37Speaker 2: up there and you didn't go and beat BYU. You
- 9:39Speaker 2: didn't go beat Utah. Now, if they do it in
- 9:43Speaker 2: the Big 12 Championship, obviously that'll take care of itself.
- 9:45Speaker 2: But for Texas Tech, In fact, at the very least,
- 9:47Speaker 2: the thing that you would say is that the margin
- 9:49Speaker 2: of error has now dissipated with what is a disappointing
- 9:52Speaker 2: loss at Cincinnati, where it just felt like the offense
- 9:55Speaker 2: could not get out of its own way.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Yeah. Visiting with Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief, Dave Campbell. Texas Football Magazine.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Curious to get your thoughts now because if we're talking
- 10:05Speaker 1: about Texas Tech and looking at the rest of the
- 10:07Speaker 1: schedule after Arizona this week, they have West Virginia at home. Possible,
- 10:10Speaker 1: as some folks are saying, trap game in Stillwater at
- 10:13Speaker 1: Oklahoma State. Then they're going to be in Waco. And what,
- 10:18Speaker 1: you know, is Baylor going with Dave Aranda having been
- 10:22Speaker 1: relieved of his duties there? And you mentioned at the
- 10:26Speaker 1: start of the year, you said it was kind of
- 10:28Speaker 1: on the job watch for Aranda. They got off to
- 10:31Speaker 1: a 4-1 start. They looked pretty good. They were on
- 10:33Speaker 1: the rise. They were on the rise in the Dave
- 10:36Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football Power Poll as well. What has happened
- 10:39Speaker 1: to Baylor? And now where do they go?
- 10:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's disappointing, I think, overall, that essentially the offense
- 10:48Speaker 2: never came around in a good enough way that would
- 10:52Speaker 2: allow them to.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Save Dave Aranda's job.
- 10:56Speaker 2: They basically talked about how DJ Lagway was going to
- 10:59Speaker 2: have to come in and kind of save Dave Aranda's job.
- 11:01Speaker 2: And I don't think it's all on, that's an unfair
- 11:03Speaker 2: thing to put on a young man. But, you know,
- 11:06Speaker 2: plain and simple that the offense wasn't good enough. You know,
- 11:09Speaker 2: you saw that, I think, on display last week in
- 11:11Speaker 2: their loss to Kansas. It was not consistent enough. And
- 11:15Speaker 2: I think that what you do is you look at the,
- 11:17Speaker 2: I think you've got to look at the sum of
- 11:19Speaker 2: the last two weeks. Losing at home TCU in a
- 11:23Speaker 2: game that was very winnable. and then losing to Kansas
- 11:26Speaker 2: for the first time in what? I thought it was
- 11:29Speaker 2: like a 20-game winning streak against Kansas or something.
- 11:33Speaker 3: That's going to do you in. And for Baylor, they've
- 11:36Speaker 3: had enough. He dropped out.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Dave Aranda finishes 40-40 as head coach at Baylor, which
- 11:41Speaker 2: I think is pretty remarkable considering how it started and
- 11:44Speaker 2: considering how Baylor was on top of the world for
- 11:47Speaker 2: a hot minute there at the beginning of the Dave
- 11:49Speaker 2: Aranda era. But it all kind of fell apart the
- 11:52Speaker 2: past couple of years. And I think that the legacy
- 11:57Speaker 2: of Dave Aranda is going to be that he was
- 11:59Speaker 2: brought in as this defensive ace He was brought in
- 12:02Speaker 2: as this guy who was the name to know at
- 12:06Speaker 2: LSU's defensive coordinator spot. And now the defense was always,
- 12:12Speaker 2: it was okay at times. They had some times where
- 12:14Speaker 2: they were really good, especially in the beginning, they were
- 12:15Speaker 2: pretty good. But the offense just never really after that
- 12:18Speaker 2: kind of caught up. And I think that that, ended
- 12:20Speaker 2: up being his undoing, and obviously it's disappointing for Baylor.
- 12:24Speaker 2: They'll play off the string with an interim coach and
- 12:26Speaker 2: then go into the, although I'm sure the job search
- 12:29Speaker 2: is already hard at work there, so they're trying to
- 12:31Speaker 2: figure out who's going to be the next guy at
- 12:32Speaker 2: the helm in Waco.
- 12:34Speaker 1: How difficult is it going to be for SMU to
- 12:36Speaker 1: reach the playoff, short of winning the auto bid, winning
- 12:40Speaker 1: the ACC?
- 12:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not getting any easier. I think the fact
- 12:45Speaker 3: that the I think the fact that.
- 12:50Speaker 2: SMU and the ACC has been a little bit... It's
- 12:54Speaker 2: top-heavy at the very top there with Miami. But past that,
- 12:59Speaker 2: there's just not a ton of depth there. But that
- 13:05Speaker 2: loss they had a couple of weeks ago, I think,
- 13:06Speaker 2: is really going to hurt them down the stretch against Louisville. Now, look,
- 13:12Speaker 2: what they really need is they really need.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Wake Forest and Notre Dame to keep winning. That's what
- 13:18Speaker 3: they need.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Because that back-to-back game, those back-to-back games right before Thanksgiving
- 13:22Speaker 2: are going to be ultimately their big showcase opportunity to
- 13:25Speaker 2: do that. If you go and you, if you beat
- 13:27Speaker 2: Wake Forest at home and they're still nationally ranked, and
- 13:31Speaker 2: then you go on the road and beat Notre Dame
- 13:33Speaker 2: in back-to-back weeks, They'll be in.
- 13:36Speaker 3: They'll find a way in.
- 13:37Speaker 2: At that point, I think that a one-loss team or
- 13:39Speaker 2: even a two-loss team with a loss in the conference
- 13:42Speaker 2: championship game would make it in there. But barring that,
- 13:47Speaker 2: it's hard to see. I think they cannot lose another game.
- 13:50Speaker 2: They have to win out at this point to have
- 13:52Speaker 2: a chance. If they win on the regular season and
- 13:54Speaker 2: lose to Miami in a close one in the conference
- 13:56Speaker 2: championship game, yeah, okay, maybe we can talk about what
- 13:58Speaker 2: that looks like. But I think that right now, if
- 14:00Speaker 2: you're SMU, you've got to be thinking, we've got to
- 14:01Speaker 2: go out there and win out. And otherwise, it's going
- 14:05Speaker 2: to be curtains for them.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, was
- 14:09Speaker 1: with us. We talked college football. Let's jump to high
- 14:12Speaker 1: school football as well. And you've got a pretty important
- 14:17Speaker 1: matchup going on over in East Texas for your telecast
- 14:20Speaker 1: Friday night.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yeah, we're heading to Upshur County for Gilmer and Carthage.
- 14:25Speaker 2: And they're at Jeff Traylor Stadium, speaking of potentially tied
- 14:28Speaker 2: to Baylor. But that is obviously big doings there. And
- 14:32Speaker 2: whenever they get together. It's a knockdown, dragout. Two really
- 14:38Speaker 2: high-powered offenses have been really, really good. I love what
- 14:42Speaker 2: Gilmer has been able to do with Kipton Neighbors has
- 14:47Speaker 2: been a real dynamo for them. Their quarterback as well
- 14:51Speaker 2: is all 5'5, Zade Taylor, but he is a dynamo.
- 14:55Speaker 2: running the ball and then if you guys didn't know
- 14:57Speaker 2: this they are using ismail kamara the big frenchman the
- 15:01Speaker 2: texas commit uh who all 330 pounds of them they've
- 15:04Speaker 2: got him at tight end right yeah how about that
- 15:06Speaker 2: they're lining them up they're lining up at fullback we
- 15:08Speaker 2: talked with alan metal about an hour ago he said
- 15:10Speaker 2: we'll split him out we threw him a pass last
- 15:13Speaker 2: week and he got 18 yards on it um so
- 15:16Speaker 2: it's a wild offense defense is going to be challenged
- 15:19Speaker 2: this week against jacob dixon and a high-powered carthage attack
- 15:22Speaker 2: i mean it's carthage it's scott surratt calling the plays
- 15:24Speaker 2: they're going to be really good but even though they
- 15:26Speaker 2: graduated so heavy they have figured things out with jacob
- 15:29Speaker 2: dixon uh they've got they kind of they kind of
- 15:31Speaker 2: cobbled together or they don't have a kj edwards like
- 15:34Speaker 2: they did last year but they've got three guys back
- 15:37Speaker 2: there that kind of make up the running game and
- 15:39Speaker 2: more importantly for them i think that they've got the
- 15:41Speaker 2: the best receiver core they may have ever had at
- 15:43Speaker 2: Carthage with J.D. Edwards and Bryson Price, and then a
- 15:45Speaker 2: defense that is playing really well right now that actually
- 15:48Speaker 2: had shut out Pleasant Grove into the third quarter last year,
- 15:52Speaker 2: late in the third quarter last week.
- 15:53Speaker 3: And so I think that we're in for a really
- 15:55Speaker 3: good one.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I'm excited to head out to Uptree County and see
- 15:59Speaker 2: some good ball that I think has an opportunity to
- 16:01Speaker 2: be pretty, perhaps poincy, perhaps an exciting one because as
- 16:05Speaker 2: these two teams tend to play.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Folks can watch that for free if they have a subscription, texasfootball.com
- 16:11Speaker 1: for all the subscription info on that. Okay. I was
- 16:15Speaker 1: perusing the list of top flight games. And there's, as
- 16:18Speaker 1: you know, there's a pass of them this week. And
- 16:23Speaker 1: I came to the conclusion that, that the best game,
- 16:28Speaker 1: in fact, I even said this to Jeff Jones, the
- 16:32Speaker 1: local sports director at KVU. They do a different game.
- 16:35Speaker 1: They call their game of the week. They go out
- 16:37Speaker 1: and cover it intensely and do stuff after. And I said,
- 16:43Speaker 1: what's your game of the week? And they said, well,
- 16:45Speaker 1: it's obvious choice. I said, is it? They said, yeah,
- 16:47Speaker 1: it's Cedar Ridge at Westlake. I said, it's not my
- 16:50Speaker 1: obvious choice. Good game, good game, good game. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:54Speaker 1: They said, which one is your obvious choice? I said,
- 16:58Speaker 1: 8-0 Thorndale, 9-0 Rosebud Lott. And they're like, yes.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Who?
- 17:05Speaker 1: What? And I think Corey Mosher works there and said, Thorndale,
- 17:08Speaker 1: is that in our coverage area? I said, yes, it is.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Thorndale is. Now, Rosebud Lott's in the super syntax, but...
- 17:13Speaker 1: That's a big time matchup this week, isn't it?
- 17:15Speaker 3: Hey, Craig, this is why we're friends. This is why
- 17:17Speaker 3: we're friends, because you're exactly right.
- 17:19Speaker 2: I think this is, if this is not the game
- 17:21Speaker 2: of the week, it is on the extreme short list
- 17:23Speaker 2: of game of the week in the state of Texas.
- 17:26Speaker 2: 13-2A Division I title is up for grabs. Battle of unbeatens,
- 17:30Speaker 2: there's only five battles of unbeatens here in week nine.
- 17:33Speaker 3: This is one of them.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Rosebud Law is looking to close out its first regular
- 17:36Speaker 2: season undefeated since 1995. Price were a broker. Their quarterback
- 17:42Speaker 2: has been excellent. 27 touchdowns against just one interception. And
- 17:46Speaker 2: then there's Thorndale. Thorndale is a team... The word I
- 17:49Speaker 2: keep coming back to is workmanlike. They've got a grinding
- 17:52Speaker 2: running game with Hudson, Thigpen. Their defense just thumps you
- 17:56Speaker 2: with chain kerfoot. They just kind of smother you. I'm
- 18:00Speaker 2: fascinated by this game. I mean, this is one of
- 18:02Speaker 2: those games... We had expectations for Thorndale, but maybe not
- 18:06Speaker 2: this high.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Rosebud Law is a real surprise.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Rosebud Law is a team that I think is kind
- 18:12Speaker 2: of coming, not necessarily coming out of nowhere, but certainly
- 18:14Speaker 2: exceeding expectations. Fascinated by this game. I like Thorndale at home,
- 18:18Speaker 2: but I think this is a coin flip type game.
- 18:22Speaker 2: And yeah, one of the only five matchups of unbeatens
- 18:25Speaker 2: in Texas. You can't do, in week nine, like you've
- 18:28Speaker 2: got nine over eight now. That just does, I mean,
- 18:31Speaker 2: the next time we'll have something like this, there might
- 18:32Speaker 2: be one, I don't want to speak out of school,
- 18:34Speaker 2: I haven't done the research. There might be one next week,
- 18:36Speaker 2: but the next time we're going to get one of
- 18:37Speaker 2: these is like Thanksgiving, right? You know what I mean?
- 18:41Speaker 2: So this is the good stuff right here.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Okay.
- 18:44Speaker 3: All right.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I purposely left it out of the three games because
- 18:48Speaker 1: I knew you had a feel for it like I
- 18:50Speaker 1: did as well. So I left that one out. But
- 18:52Speaker 1: I will give you three games. And in the meanest
- 18:54Speaker 1: thing we do to one another, you pick one game.
- 18:57Speaker 1: If you couldn't be in Upshur County, you got to
- 18:59Speaker 1: be at one of these three games. And they are
- 19:00Speaker 1: as follows. Richmond Randall against Angleton. Ah, there's another battle
- 19:05Speaker 1: of unbeatens there. Okay. Richmond Randall hosting Angleton. That's in
- 19:10Speaker 1: 5A Division I. How about 4AD2? No, not your matchup.
- 19:16Speaker 1: 7-1 Brock, 8-0 Graham. There's one. And then the other one,
- 19:20Speaker 1: we got a 7-0 against a 6-1. We drop down
- 19:23Speaker 1: to 2AD2. Unbeaten Wheeler against those Wellington Skyrockets who are 6-1.
- 19:29Speaker 3: If you guys couldn't tell, if listeners couldn't tell, it's
- 19:31Speaker 3: a great week.
- 19:32Speaker 2: It's a really nice week, and it's especially a great
- 19:35Speaker 2: week at the small school level. Wellington Wheeler is a
- 19:40Speaker 2: certified banger. That is going to be a ton of fun.
- 19:43Speaker 2: I'm really excited to see how that goes. Brock and
- 19:45Speaker 2: Graham is one of the very best quarterback matchups.
- 19:50Speaker 3: In the state.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Brock, quarterback, Holt Frazier has been fantastic. I think it's
- 19:54Speaker 2: Corley Cooper there for Graham.
- 19:56Speaker 3: They've been excellent.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Graham has kind of flown under the radar. This is,
- 19:59Speaker 2: I think, their big level up in competition. My pick,
- 20:02Speaker 2: I'm going to be big school snob. I'm going to
- 20:03Speaker 2: go to Houston. I'm going to go to Rosenberg for
- 20:06Speaker 2: Randall and Angleton. I'll tell you this, Randall, this is
- 20:12Speaker 2: really the moment that Randall arrives the 5A D1 program
- 20:16Speaker 2: because they had two great non-district wins, close wins, but
- 20:20Speaker 2: non-district wins over South Oak Cliff. And then you remember
- 20:23Speaker 2: they won that 3-0 game against Spring Westfield, which is 6-18, impressive,
- 20:27Speaker 2: but 3-0 nonetheless. After that, since then they got into
- 20:30Speaker 2: district play, their margin of victory in their district play
- 20:34Speaker 2: so far has been.
- 20:35Speaker 3: 63.5 points on average. They have been crushing people.
- 20:39Speaker 2: And of course, Landon Williams Callis, who has a shot
- 20:41Speaker 2: at becoming the state's all-time leading rusher in the Texas commit,
- 20:44Speaker 2: he's a straw that stirs a drink.
- 20:45Speaker 3: But the defense for them has been excellent. Cameron Hippolite
- 20:47Speaker 3: leading the way, the number 10 scoring defense in all
- 20:49Speaker 3: of Texas. This is their.
- 20:52Speaker 2: test, though, because now they take on an Angledon team
- 20:55Speaker 2: that is undefeated and spectacular running game led by Jaden Moore.
- 20:59Speaker 2: They've got an average of more than 10 yards to carry.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Their defense is smothering. They got Quentin Jammer's kid on there,
- 21:06Speaker 2: Cason Jammer, who is making big noise for them, John
- 21:09Speaker 2: David Britton.
- 21:10Speaker 3: They've forced 18 turnovers in eight games.
- 21:13Speaker 2: This is an absolute slugfest and will tell us a
- 21:15Speaker 2: ton about, especially from the Randall perspective, who is a
- 21:18Speaker 2: team that I think people, very highly ranked team that
- 21:21Speaker 2: we think can make it to AT & T stadium.
- 21:23Speaker 2: This is the type of game they're going to have
- 21:24Speaker 2: to win like throughout the course of their playoff run.
- 21:28Speaker 2: And this is kind of a level up from the,
- 21:30Speaker 2: with all due respect, the, the, the, the, you know, the, the, the.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Iowa colonies who's having a tough, tough year teams like that.
- 21:36Speaker 2: This is a level up in competition and we will
- 21:38Speaker 2: find out a ton more about what Randall looks like.
- 21:40Speaker 2: And for Angleton and opportunity, uh, to get a real
- 21:43Speaker 2: feather in their cap heading into the playoffs.
- 21:45Speaker 1: And I left out these all deserving of honorable mention.
- 21:48Speaker 1: 8-0 Pearland against 7-1 Shadow Creek. Lake Travis and Round Rock.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Here's your weird number about that. Depending on what happens
- 21:57Speaker 1: with Westlake and Cedar Ridge, there's the very real possibility.
- 22:01Speaker 1: If Round Rock wins that game, you could be talking
- 22:03Speaker 1: about Lake Travis being the four seed. coming out of
- 22:06Speaker 1: that district there. There's that possibility. How about Anna at Salina?
- 22:13Speaker 1: There's an 8-0 and 7-1, and an 8-0 Tyvee at
- 22:16Speaker 1: a 5-2 Canyon Lake. I mean, those are all really,
- 22:20Speaker 1: like you said, a really good weekend for these.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Great slate of games. And then I'll give you a
- 22:25Speaker 3: couple more. The other unbeaten matches of unbeatens, which might
- 22:27Speaker 3: be flying to people's radar.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Price Carlisle plays Frankston in Price, Texas, which is a really,
- 22:33Speaker 2: really fun game. One of the games, the game that
- 22:36Speaker 2: Matt Stepp is calling the biggest game in Fort Worth
- 22:38Speaker 2: ISD in at least a decade, unbeaten Fort Worth Arlington
- 22:41Speaker 2: Heights versus unbeaten Fort Worth Wyatt.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Wyatt's an unbelievable story.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Eight and over the first time in program history, their
- 22:48Speaker 2: coach Zachary Chris is the son of the legendary coach
- 22:50Speaker 2: Willie Chris, who coached there forever and ever.
- 22:52Speaker 3: And then the other one.
- 22:54Speaker 2: White Deer hosting Boys Ranch in six-man football. Boys Ranch,
- 22:59Speaker 2: one of the great stories in Texas high school football,
- 23:01Speaker 2: undefeated under Lewis Kelly, who had never coached six-man football
- 23:05Speaker 2: before and now has them 8-0 with an opportunity to
- 23:08Speaker 2: go win a district championship on the road in White Deer, America.
- 23:11Speaker 3: So if you're anywhere near White Deer, make it to
- 23:13Speaker 3: Buff Stadium on Friday night.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Catch you a quick Southwest flight up to Amarillo. Get
- 23:17Speaker 1: your rental car and zip up there. No problem at
- 23:19Speaker 1: all with that.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:21Speaker 1: He's Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Have fun with the call on Friday night. We'll visit
- 23:27Speaker 1: again soon. Sure will. Sure will.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Talk to you guys later.
- 23:30Speaker 1: You bet. All right. That's Tuesdays with Tepper here. We
- 23:34Speaker 1: have more coming up. How about Tuesdays with Dak? We'll
- 23:37Speaker 1: hear from Dak Prescott coming up on 13 Under the Zone.
