Latest / Foul Territory / Phillies Season Preview w/Ruben Amaro: Cristopher Sánchez deal details, Painter on Opening Day roster
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: We are joined now by our friend, former Phillies general
- 0:06Speaker 1: manager and current co host of The Philly Show, Rubin
- 0:10Speaker 1: Amaro Junior. Hello, good to see you. Big week for
- 0:14Speaker 1: Andrew Painter. He makes the team and he gets engaged.
- 0:18Speaker 1: What did the Phillies see about him that led him
- 0:21Speaker 1: to break camp with the big club? Rubin?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's nice to see you guys.
- 0:26Speaker 3: And you know what, I probably should be flipping my
- 0:27Speaker 3: hat or how come I don't have the backwards hat
- 0:29Speaker 3: look on the memo?
- 0:31Speaker 2: What am I doing?
- 0:34Speaker 4: You also missed out on on Philly Show on Thursday.
- 0:37Speaker 4: You weren't there. Your two cos there, but you weren't there.
- 0:41Speaker 3: You know, I'm sort of on vacation here in Clearwater,
- 0:44Speaker 3: my friend. It's golf and it's entertainment, but I am
- 0:46Speaker 3: watching some baseball too, and I really enjoyed watching Andrew
- 0:50Speaker 3: Painter pitch this spring. I mean, he handled himself extremely well. Obviously,
- 0:55Speaker 3: he's famous, he's been around for a long time.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Everybody's been touting him.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Was one of the best pitching prospects since Paul Schemes.
- 1:01Speaker 2: No disrespect to.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Paul, but but this kid, he's got great stuff. He's
- 1:05Speaker 3: got the body, he's got the mentality, he's got the maturity,
- 1:09Speaker 3: and finally he's healthy. I know he didn't have a
- 1:11Speaker 3: great season last year, but I think more about it
- 1:14Speaker 3: was more about making sure that he was healthy through
- 1:17Speaker 3: that that TJ that he had a couple of years back.
- 1:20Speaker 3: So I like the way through the ball, particularly in
- 1:23Speaker 3: his last outing, faced a very good lineup and through strikes.
- 1:28Speaker 2: He's command seems better.
- 1:30Speaker 3: They made a little minor adjustment in his delivery, got
- 1:33Speaker 3: him closer and closer to where he was, you know,
- 1:37Speaker 3: a few years back before he had the surgery, as
- 1:40Speaker 3: far as his arm angle is concerned, and he's feeling
- 1:43Speaker 3: confident throwing three or four quality pitches, and you know
- 1:46Speaker 3: he's going to be pitching in the five hole for
- 1:48Speaker 3: the Phillies. And I think that's one of the biggest strengths.
- 1:50Speaker 5: They have when they When I saw him pitch before
- 1:54Speaker 5: as Tommy John surgery that he had, I saw tall athletic,
- 1:59Speaker 5: moved down down the hill really well and was able
- 2:01Speaker 5: to command. Was that so easy to watch now that
- 2:07Speaker 5: he's back, and then tough to watch because of the
- 2:10Speaker 5: fact that he had command issues and were those command issues?
- 2:15Speaker 5: Those questions asked or answered this spring training about the
- 2:19Speaker 5: command issues against good enough competition, Like you just said.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I was a little concerned about what he went
- 2:26Speaker 3: through last year at Triple A because he didn't he
- 2:30Speaker 3: didn't get a lot of swing a miss.
- 2:31Speaker 2: He didn't get there.
- 2:32Speaker 3: There was something going on, and I think that the
- 2:35Speaker 3: folks here in Philadelphia, Caleb Coffam as the pitching coach,
- 2:38Speaker 3: and their overall pitching development is very, very good here.
- 2:42Speaker 3: They've seemed to pick apart some things that they saw
- 2:45Speaker 3: that might get him back to where he was prior
- 2:47Speaker 3: when you saw him and when I saw him the first.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Time getting off the mountain.
- 2:51Speaker 3: The thing about this kid that I have a lot
- 2:53Speaker 3: of confidence in is that not only is he a
- 2:56Speaker 3: super mature kid, but for a man this size and
- 2:59Speaker 3: of this age, he actually and you guys know this,
- 3:03Speaker 3: the better athlete you have, the better chance you have
- 3:06Speaker 3: to be able to repeat your delivery and to get
- 3:08Speaker 3: back to the command that you've had. At one point,
- 3:11Speaker 3: my concern was whether he was going to be healthy enough.
- 3:15Speaker 3: But it's clear that he's healthy. The ball's coming out
- 3:17Speaker 3: of his hand great now. It's just a matter of
- 3:20Speaker 3: him being able to make the adjustments of being a
- 3:22Speaker 3: Major leaguer, and you know, that's a big one. It's
- 3:24Speaker 3: a big adjustment. But I do think that he's got
- 3:27Speaker 3: the poise, that he's got the confidence, and I also
- 3:30Speaker 3: do believe that he has the athleticism, which is an
- 3:34Speaker 3: important one for me to be able to, you know,
- 3:37Speaker 3: to pitch well even when he may struggle at times Ruben.
- 3:42Speaker 4: Another one of their starters that just was given a
- 3:44Speaker 4: huge extension is Jonathan Sanchez. Now Jim Bowden, who I
- 3:49Speaker 4: completely disagree with, is like, this is a terrible, terrible
- 3:52Speaker 4: move for the Phillies. Why are they doing this? I
- 3:55Speaker 4: love this for both sides. I love for Sanchez and
- 3:57Speaker 4: I love it for the Phillies because you lock up
- 3:59Speaker 4: a guy before a CBA all the things, whether he's
- 4:02Speaker 4: a free agent, and he continues to get better and
- 4:04Speaker 4: better and better every single year. Plus with who knows
- 4:07Speaker 4: what's happening with Wheeler, you know, Nola's getting older. Lozardo
- 4:11Speaker 4: signs an extension. So you have two guys locked up
- 4:12Speaker 4: for many years. Now, you have Painter coming. What would
- 4:16Speaker 4: you have done this as the GM when you were
- 4:17Speaker 4: the GM of the Phillies And why is there hate
- 4:20Speaker 4: about this? I would think Philly, especially Philly fans, should
- 4:22Speaker 4: be rejoicing.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Absolutely. I totally agree with you, Aja, and yes I
- 4:27Speaker 3: would have done this. I mean, this guy was under
- 4:29Speaker 3: a great contract, but they didn't really tear it up.
- 4:31Speaker 2: All they really did was add on a couple of years.
- 4:35Speaker 3: There was no question in my mind that they were
- 4:36Speaker 3: going to pick up that those two option option years anyway.
- 4:41Speaker 3: And that's what Dave Dombrowski said, Like, why not tack
- 4:43Speaker 3: on a couple of more years at a reasonable price.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I mean, this is a guy who's an elite starter
- 4:48Speaker 3: right now. Those guys are going for what forty million
- 4:51Speaker 3: dollars a year, and so they've already got him at
- 4:53Speaker 3: a great price.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Add on a couple of years. This guy takes care
- 4:56Speaker 2: of himself.
- 4:57Speaker 3: His transformation might be one of the the coolest things
- 5:00Speaker 3: I've seen in the history of me watching baseball. This
- 5:05Speaker 3: is a guy who came to the big leagues from
- 5:07Speaker 3: the Tampa Bay Rays who was basically un armed.
- 5:10Speaker 2: He was a thrower. M he's a rock thrower. We
- 5:11Speaker 2: call him rock throwers.
- 5:13Speaker 3: He had no idea where the ball was going to
- 5:15Speaker 3: throw ninety seven ninety eight miles an hour, didn't really
- 5:18Speaker 3: have a lot of you know didn't have any command
- 5:21Speaker 3: of a secondary pitch. He now has one of the
- 5:23Speaker 3: best change ups in the game, no disrespect to Terrek's scooble.
- 5:27Speaker 3: He's one of the best left handers in the game,
- 5:29Speaker 3: no disrespect to Terrek's scooble, and he is now developing
- 5:32Speaker 3: a better and better slider that he can.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Use as a little bit more of a put away pitch.
- 5:36Speaker 2: He's a three pitch pitcher.
- 5:38Speaker 3: He's an excellent athlete, he's a great kid, and he
- 5:42Speaker 3: continues to strive to be great. I think this is
- 5:45Speaker 3: a win win for both sides, and you.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Don't see that all that often. I don't.
- 5:49Speaker 3: I guess everybody wants to hate on every move that
- 5:52Speaker 3: every team makes. They always have an opinion about it.
- 5:55Speaker 3: But in my estimation, great move, and I applaud both
- 6:01Speaker 3: Christopher Sanchez and the Phillies on this. It's a great thing. Hey,
- 6:05Speaker 3: the best way to win baseball games. Guess what, guys,
- 6:08Speaker 3: it's starting pitching. You gotta value that. The Phillies value it.
- 6:12Speaker 3: They know that's an important part of what they what
- 6:14Speaker 3: is going to make them successful, and they're keeping that
- 6:17Speaker 3: window as wide open as they possibly can.
- 6:20Speaker 6: Aj baseball season is finally here, and there's nothing like
- 6:24Speaker 6: listening to the sweet sounds of the game while you're

- 7:22Speaker 4: By the way, I called him Jonathan, sorry before everyone
- 7:24Speaker 4: kills me.
- 7:24Speaker 5: I know it's Christopher. Sorry.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Sorry, sorry, sorry Phillies fans, sorry people in the chat,
- 7:30Speaker 4: and we're talking about seven hundred and eighty million people
- 7:33Speaker 4: plus all the guys who are getting sent down. Sorry,
- 7:35Speaker 4: if everyone's want to make a mistake, Rubin, I apologize.
- 7:37Speaker 4: I should just hear on TV they call their first
- 7:40Speaker 4: or last name ain no room. But anyways, so would
- 7:43Speaker 4: this mean so they have WIZARDO locked up, they have
- 7:46Speaker 4: Sanchez now locked up, they have Nola for a few
- 7:48Speaker 4: more years. Does this mean Painter could be next in
- 7:51Speaker 4: line for an extension type of thing if he may.
- 7:55Speaker 4: I don't know if they'll do it before the season starts,
- 7:56Speaker 4: but let's say he gets off to a nice start.
- 7:59Speaker 3: I mean it's possible. I would think that they're at
- 8:02Speaker 3: least discussing it amongst themselves. Again, you know the fact
- 8:05Speaker 3: that he's had a TJ and how he comes through that.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Now it's been a couple of years since he had it,
- 8:10Speaker 3: and it seems like he's going to be healthy.
- 8:12Speaker 2: But why not?
- 8:13Speaker 3: Why not you know, build that you know that, build
- 8:16Speaker 3: that roster with with quality young arms. I do think
- 8:20Speaker 3: that the Phillies value the importance of starting pitching and
- 8:23Speaker 3: uh and I think that's something that has been you know,
- 8:26Speaker 3: the value of that has been mitigated over the last
- 8:29Speaker 3: few years, and I think people are realizing, Hey, if
- 8:32Speaker 3: I can cover a little bit more than half the
- 8:34Speaker 3: innings with my starters, then I don't have to put
- 8:37Speaker 3: the pressure on that bullpen as much. I mean, obviously
- 8:41Speaker 3: it's there's danger to it, and there is risk because
- 8:45Speaker 3: guys get hurt.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It happens.
- 8:47Speaker 3: But I think that the Phillies do a really good
- 8:49Speaker 3: job of prehabbing, of keeping guys healthy and and I
- 8:53Speaker 3: wouldn't be surprised at all if they wouldn't consider Painter
- 8:56Speaker 3: as a guy next in line for a long termers
- 9:00Speaker 3: a GM.
- 9:01Speaker 5: What is that process like for you? You obviously like
- 9:04Speaker 5: the player, you know the player? Is it a hey,
- 9:08Speaker 5: you know what ownership comes to you when you were
- 9:10Speaker 5: there mister Montgomery, and now John Middleton comes to Dave
- 9:14Speaker 5: don Browski and says, hey, we have some money to
- 9:17Speaker 5: be able to lock up or does Dave den Browski say, hey,
- 9:20Speaker 5: we'd like to lock him up based on this like
- 9:22Speaker 5: you went to mister Montgomery when when you were the GM.
- 9:27Speaker 5: What's that process like before you even get to the
- 9:30Speaker 5: player's actual extension.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Typically we get together with the boys in the office
- 9:36Speaker 3: and we start thinking about, okay, long term, what is
- 9:39Speaker 3: this guy's make up, Like, is this guy going to
- 9:41Speaker 3: continue to try to be the best.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Player he can be? Is he a winning player?
- 9:45Speaker 3: Is the make up the kind of guy that we
- 9:47Speaker 3: want to put this money into long term, because you know,
- 9:50Speaker 3: we wanted to develop winning players. And so once we
- 9:54Speaker 3: started having those discussions, then we looked at comps, you know,
- 9:57Speaker 3: long term deals, what the marketplace is bearing right now,
- 10:01Speaker 3: and then try to set up.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Something that that made some sense.
- 10:04Speaker 3: And then and at that point we'd probably start to
- 10:06Speaker 3: go to our you know, to to the owner to
- 10:09Speaker 3: ownership group, whether we John Middleton or or Dave David
- 10:13Speaker 3: Montgomery when I was at the Helm and discuss it
- 10:16Speaker 3: and you know, basically give them our memo, Hey, these
- 10:19Speaker 3: are our thought this is the thought process, this is
- 10:21Speaker 3: why we think this is the right thing for this player,
- 10:24Speaker 3: and why it was something that we did with several
- 10:27Speaker 3: players while I was an assistant GM and a GM.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Chase Suttley obviously did it with Howard.
- 10:34Speaker 3: We did it with a bunch of guys, and we
- 10:37Speaker 3: thought it was important to be able to lock up
- 10:39Speaker 3: our homegrown players that we knew were winning type players.
- 10:44Speaker 3: But the makeup was a really really important part of this,
- 10:46Speaker 3: because you don't sign Cole Hamil's if you don't think
- 10:49Speaker 3: that Cole Hamil's is who he is. And so those
- 10:52Speaker 3: were some of the things that we thought were extremely important. Obviously,
- 10:56Speaker 3: the health and all that stuff is part of it,
- 10:59Speaker 3: and the risk is there, but you certainly don't you
- 11:02Speaker 3: feel comfortable more comfortable about a guy who you know
- 11:05Speaker 3: wants to win and to be great, And I think
- 11:08Speaker 3: that's an important.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Element here, Rubin.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I remember when Carl Crawford got traded from the Red
- 11:15Speaker 1: Sox to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Justin was running around
- 11:18Speaker 1: the clubhouse at like a seven eight nine year old kid.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Now Here we are with the excitement of Justin Crawford
- 11:25Speaker 1: making the team. Why should we be excited about this
- 11:27Speaker 1: young man that literally grew up before our eyes.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I think there's a couple of reasons. One the pedigree.
- 11:33Speaker 2: There's no question a lot of this is guy.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I mean, his dad was a really really good player
- 11:38Speaker 3: in the major leagues for a long time.
- 11:40Speaker 2: But not just that this is a great kit.
- 11:42Speaker 3: This kid respects the game, he plays hard, He's got talent.
- 11:45Speaker 2: He is a game changer with his legs.
- 11:49Speaker 3: I had a concern about whether or not he could
- 11:51Speaker 3: be an everyday center and fielder. But he did work
- 11:54Speaker 3: in the offseason with Eric Davis, who knows baseball and
- 11:58Speaker 3: knows the outfield quite well, and the guys here Paco
- 12:02Speaker 3: figueroa excellent outfield coach as well.
- 12:05Speaker 2: He looks terrific in the outfield.
- 12:07Speaker 3: You know how difficult it is in spring training, either
- 12:10Speaker 3: in Arizona with that high sky or here in in
- 12:13Speaker 3: Florida where the sun and the wind is will affect
- 12:17Speaker 3: the baseball. He's handled himself extremely well. I love his angles.
- 12:21Speaker 3: I like the way he throws the ball. He's got
- 12:23Speaker 3: a very good arm. He's not one of those speedsters
- 12:25Speaker 3: I can't throw. I think his instinct for the game
- 12:28Speaker 3: has been very good. I had some concerns about whether,
- 12:31Speaker 3: you know, because they didn't bring him up last year
- 12:33Speaker 3: and they had sort of had a need, but he
- 12:36Speaker 3: got hurt during that time in July and so never
- 12:39Speaker 3: got to the big leagues. My concern was whether he's
- 12:41Speaker 3: gonna be able to handle being a championship caliber outfielder
- 12:45Speaker 3: right now.
- 12:45Speaker 2: He's showing he can do that.
- 12:47Speaker 3: As far as his offense is concerned, I wouldn't mess
- 12:50Speaker 3: with him at all.
- 12:51Speaker 2: There's a lot of.
- 12:51Speaker 3: People who are talking about, you know, making sure that
- 12:53Speaker 3: he hits the ball around too much. Well, guess what,
- 12:56Speaker 3: that's a that's one of the elements that makes him
- 12:58Speaker 3: a you know, very distinctive player. He's got enough pop
- 13:01Speaker 3: and will continue to develop his quote unquote man strength.
- 13:05Speaker 3: But this is a guy that for me is Gooa
- 13:07Speaker 3: got a chance to be a really good quality overall
- 13:10Speaker 3: major league player. And guess what, He's hitting in a
- 13:12Speaker 3: nine hole in this in this lineup, and they don't
- 13:15Speaker 3: really need him to be a three hundred hitter and
- 13:18Speaker 3: have an ops of you know, nine p fifty. They
- 13:21Speaker 3: just need him to play solid defense. They need him
- 13:23Speaker 3: to get on base, create a little havoc on the
- 13:26Speaker 3: base pass, and I think this kid's got a chance
- 13:28Speaker 3: to be a good one.
- 13:30Speaker 5: To that point, I have to ask about the batting
- 13:33Speaker 5: order if you go a left handed I mean, there
- 13:36Speaker 5: was talk about who was gonna hit first, Is it
- 13:38Speaker 5: gonna be Tray whatever? With that type of speed, do
- 13:43Speaker 5: they fear that they're gonna put him in a bad
- 13:45Speaker 5: spot if there's too many lefties at the top of
- 13:47Speaker 5: the order. Then they're just gonna bring in a left
- 13:49Speaker 5: he to face him. Even though it's, you know, the
- 13:51Speaker 5: nine hitter, you're still getting that bad platoon advantage is
- 13:55Speaker 5: they talk about possibly shifting maybe somebody that can handle
- 13:58Speaker 5: left and left a little bit better, a Bryson Stott
- 14:01Speaker 5: that goes into the ninth hole like.
- 14:02Speaker 3: That, You know, I think they I think they're gonna
- 14:05Speaker 3: stay with him in the ninth hole because I think
- 14:07Speaker 3: they have the confidence and he can handle left handers.
- 14:10Speaker 3: I mean, he's a guy that stays on the ball,
- 14:12Speaker 3: he tries to make contact. He doesn't not a big
- 14:14Speaker 3: strikeout guy. He'll strike out just like everybody else. But
- 14:17Speaker 3: I think he hangs in there pretty well. I mean,
- 14:19Speaker 3: obviously you got a chance to go and the ninth hole,
- 14:24Speaker 3: you'll probably go with him. They're gonna lead off with
- 14:26Speaker 3: Trey anyway, so it's gonna be Trey and probably I
- 14:30Speaker 3: think they have the lineup out here today that's gonna
- 14:32Speaker 3: be the opening day lineup where it's gonna be Schwarber
- 14:34Speaker 3: and then Harper and then Alec Bowman. Then they're gonna
- 14:37Speaker 3: go left right all the way down. The line against
- 14:40Speaker 3: the right hander, so I think that they'll be fine
- 14:43Speaker 3: with him in the ninth hole. Trey will probably be
- 14:45Speaker 3: hit in the one hole. Imagine those two guys on
- 14:48Speaker 3: the base path at the same time. You got, you know, Crawford,
- 14:51Speaker 3: who can really run. Trey Turner obviously one of the
- 14:54Speaker 3: fastest guys in the game. That could give them the
- 14:56Speaker 3: Phillies a little bit different element.
- 14:58Speaker 2: They run the.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Bases o and they do steal some bases, but this
- 15:02Speaker 3: will give him this team a little bit more of
- 15:04Speaker 3: an element, not just power.
- 15:07Speaker 5: Well, I'm gonna take a Charlie Manual quote, Well, well, well,
- 15:10Speaker 5: schwar Schwarber can drive him in from the parking lot.
- 15:13Speaker 5: I don't. I don't want them to steal bases. So
- 15:15Speaker 5: there's a little bit of that that you got to
- 15:17Speaker 5: be able to make sure that you know you're not
- 15:19Speaker 5: out so that Schwarber can drive you in. My last
- 15:22Speaker 5: question on the Phillies lineup, everybody's gonna say, all they
- 15:26Speaker 5: just ran it back. Is this still a good lineup?
- 15:30Speaker 2: It's still a good quality lineup. I mean they're not.
- 15:32Speaker 3: They were fifth in in all of baseball in most categories.
- 15:37Speaker 3: I think this is a team that that with the
- 15:40Speaker 3: overall development of two very very important guys. One is
- 15:44Speaker 3: Bryson Stott you mentioned them early. The other is Brandon Marsh.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Those guys in the second half of the season had
- 15:50Speaker 3: excellent number.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Look him up.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Uh, you had Bryce and Stott with a you know
- 15:55Speaker 3: from the from the last half of the season. On
- 15:58Speaker 3: made a hand adjustment in swing. He's more direct to
- 16:01Speaker 3: the baseball. He had like an eight to fifty ops
- 16:04Speaker 3: from the from the second half on. Same thing with
- 16:07Speaker 3: Brandon Marsh. He started to gain some confidence in his stuff.
- 16:10Speaker 3: I do believe that they'll protect him by not having
- 16:13Speaker 3: him face a ton left handers, but he's a guy
- 16:15Speaker 3: that I think is also developing.
- 16:17Speaker 2: If they both.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Swing the bat closer to what they did in the
- 16:22Speaker 3: second half next year, this team's got a chance to
- 16:24Speaker 3: be a number top two or three lineup in all
- 16:27Speaker 3: the game.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Rubin Philadelphia is a wonderful place. It is also a
- 16:31Speaker 1: place with high expectations. If there is any sort of
- 16:34Speaker 1: pressure on Rob Thompson, what is it.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Well, I mean, obviously to win, and there's no question
- 16:40Speaker 3: about it. These guys are built to win and they
- 16:42Speaker 3: want to win. But Rob Thompson, he understands it. I
- 16:46Speaker 3: mean he's been in New York, he's been in Philadelphia.
- 16:48Speaker 3: He understands the big markets. But he's going to be
- 16:51Speaker 3: the same guy. I think he's continuing to learn. I
- 16:54Speaker 3: think the addition of Don Mattingly in that dugout is
- 16:58Speaker 3: an outstanding addition. Addition, I don't think he cares about it.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I think that phases him.
- 17:04Speaker 3: People think that, well, they hired Don Manningly that in case,
- 17:08Speaker 3: you know, they have to fire Rob Thompson, they get
- 17:09Speaker 3: off to a slow start. I don't think Rob Thompson
- 17:11Speaker 3: gives two craps about it, to be honest with you.
- 17:14Speaker 3: I think he cares about being a good manager, being
- 17:17Speaker 3: able to manage his team to the best of his ability,
- 17:20Speaker 3: and got a lot of respect for him. If there's
- 17:22Speaker 3: a lot of pressure there in Philadelphia, there's no question
- 17:25Speaker 3: about it. But hey, you'd rather have pressure rather have
- 17:28Speaker 3: a good team and the expectation of being a good team.
- 17:31Speaker 2: And I think Rob welcomes that.
- 17:34Speaker 5: We had Donny baseball on just the other day when
- 17:37Speaker 5: we were at Clearwater Camp and just hit a little
- 17:41Speaker 5: bit for me on what he brings to that staff
- 17:45Speaker 5: that they were lacking in the last few years.
- 17:48Speaker 3: I think it's just credibility, man. I mean, listen, they
- 17:50Speaker 3: have a really great coaching staff. I mentioned Caleb Cotham,
- 17:55Speaker 3: Dusty watt In at third base, Popco Frigueroa on the
- 17:59Speaker 3: base pass at first base, in the outfield.
- 18:03Speaker 2: I think that they have a very very strong staff.
- 18:06Speaker 3: What they did not have is someone who had been
- 18:09Speaker 3: there and done it at the major league level. So
- 18:12Speaker 3: not a lot of those guys on that staff were
- 18:15Speaker 3: major leaguers and were established major.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Leaguers as players.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Donnie's done it all. He's managed, he was as a
- 18:22Speaker 3: Hall of.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Fame type player. He has a great demeanor.
- 18:26Speaker 3: I loved watching him manage the Miami Ball Club when
- 18:30Speaker 3: he was with the faller of Florida Marlins. They played
- 18:33Speaker 3: the game right, and I used to talk to him
- 18:36Speaker 3: a lot when I was either broadcasting or in the
- 18:38Speaker 3: front office or what have you. It was great to
- 18:40Speaker 3: watch him work because his players played and they respected
- 18:45Speaker 3: him and respected the game. And anytime you can add
- 18:48Speaker 3: a Hall of Fame person and a Hall of Fame
- 18:50Speaker 3: player to your staff, that's just gonna make you all
- 18:54Speaker 3: that much better, and hopefully you know it, just it
- 18:57Speaker 3: makes Rob Thompson even better. And I'm sure he welcomed that.
- 19:00Speaker 3: He's had a great relationship with him over the years
- 19:03Speaker 3: from New York to now, and uh, I think it's
- 19:05Speaker 3: just a terrific addition to this ball club.
- 19:08Speaker 5: Do you have an opening day tradition, like you go
- 19:11Speaker 5: and get like some type of some type of barbecue
- 19:15Speaker 5: in the stands, or now there's Manco Manco pizza, you
- 19:18Speaker 5: get some Manco Manco. Do you have a opening day tradition?
- 19:21Speaker 5: Or you're gonna be across the street with Ben Davis
- 19:24Speaker 5: or Barkan or one of those guys.
- 19:26Speaker 3: I'm across the street with the boys, Ricky bo, Ben Davis,
- 19:29Speaker 3: Michael Barkan, Noble, we'll we'll do it in quadraphonic sound.
- 19:34Speaker 3: I pretty much wear the same dark blue suit with
- 19:37Speaker 3: a red tie and my little pee pin, the pledge pin.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Pledge pin, remember that guy's anyway, that's that's the one
- 19:45Speaker 3: that I use pretty much every single opening day.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Having been with the Phillies for so many years.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Pledge pin, remember that Ruben Amar Junior. Of course you
- 19:59Speaker 1: can check him out. We appreciate you very much. We'll

- 21:24Speaker 1: All right, it is time now for our bet MGM
- 21:26Speaker 1: segment and we are responsible guys for picking the American
- 21:31Speaker 1: League division winners. You can take a look at the
- 21:34Speaker 1: bet MGM futures al East Division winner Yankees at plus
- 21:38Speaker 1: one to eighty, going all the way down to the
- 21:40Speaker 1: Rays at plus twenty five hundred. So let's start there
- 21:44Speaker 1: with the East Division winner. Eric, what say you?
- 21:48Speaker 5: I said, there's just not enough value here, unless unless
- 21:51Speaker 5: you go with the Orioles, which I don't think they
- 21:53Speaker 5: have enough to win the division. I think they could
- 21:55Speaker 5: be a playoff team. Just not enough value. I don't think.
- 21:59Speaker 5: I don't think the Red Sox have enough have enough
- 22:03Speaker 5: offense for me, I guess at plus three hundred. If
- 22:06Speaker 5: they were giving me the Red Sox at plus four hundred,
- 22:09Speaker 5: I would definitely take it. But I still think it's
- 22:12Speaker 5: the rede I think it's the Blue Jays or Yankees
- 22:14Speaker 5: division here.
- 22:17Speaker 1: AJ should the Blue Jays be ahead of the Yanks
- 22:20Speaker 1: With what we talked about at the top of the show, days.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Did win the division last year? No, the Yankees are
- 22:24Speaker 4: getting back. Garrett Cole at some point. They're gonna get
- 22:28Speaker 4: Rodon back at some point, I mean. But also let's
- 22:31Speaker 4: not forget. You know, they're trying to entice people. They
- 22:34Speaker 4: don't want to put the Yankees too high because then
- 22:36Speaker 4: they'll if the Yankees do win the division, they lose money.
- 22:38Speaker 4: So let's also not forget how this works.
- 22:41Speaker 5: But I think that, yes, the Blue jay.
- 22:43Speaker 4: Should be ahead of them, but they're not, And that's fine.
- 22:47Speaker 4: That's fine, But I kind of agree with there. There's
- 22:49Speaker 4: not a ton of value on this list. The Blue
- 22:52Speaker 4: Jays would be, for me the one because they did
- 22:54Speaker 4: win the division last year. The Red Sox aren't high enough.
- 22:57Speaker 4: The Oriols maybe, but I still I don't know that
- 23:00Speaker 4: the Orioles are better than the third best team in
- 23:02Speaker 4: this division when all is said and done, just because
- 23:04Speaker 4: I still worry about their pitching a little bit. So
- 23:07Speaker 4: I mean, if I had to take one, I would
- 23:09Speaker 4: take the Blue Jays and throw one hundred to win
- 23:11Speaker 4: two sixty. That's still a nice little payday.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Okay, Yankees, Blue Jay's, Red Sox, Orioles raise in that order.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Al Central Division winner Tigers. I guess, no real surprise here, guys.
- 23:22Speaker 1: At plus one ten, the Royals at plus two twenty five,
- 23:24Speaker 1: going all the way down to AJ's White Sox at
- 23:27Speaker 1: plus three thousand. That seems high for the White Sox.
- 23:33Speaker 5: What say you, e K, I'm gonna go Royals here, Okay.
- 23:38Speaker 5: And I'm not saying. I'm not saying I'm locking it
- 23:40Speaker 5: in that the Royals are going to win it, but
- 23:42Speaker 5: I think it's close enough to say they would win
- 23:44Speaker 5: it at plus two twenty five. Yes, the Guardians came
- 23:49Speaker 5: out of nowhere because of the Tigers collapse. To me,
- 23:52Speaker 5: I think the Tigers. If you're making me choose a team,
- 23:55Speaker 5: I'm taking the Tigers. But again, when I look at
- 23:57Speaker 5: some of these numbers, I gotta I gotta find value,
- 24:01Speaker 5: and I think I looked it up. The Royals were
- 24:03Speaker 5: paying out at plus one hundred, so straight even money
- 24:08Speaker 5: to make the playoffs, So I'll take that. I think
- 24:11Speaker 5: it's going to be the Tigers and Royals all year.
- 24:13Speaker 5: I think both teams improved. I think the Tigers didn't
- 24:17Speaker 5: you know, are they going to make the adjustment that
- 24:20Speaker 5: they didn't make in the second half offensively, because it's
- 24:23Speaker 5: it was a good offense in the first half. Probably
- 24:26Speaker 5: after even you know, even a little past the first half.
- 24:28Speaker 5: It was a good offense, but they collapsed. Are they
- 24:31Speaker 5: going to take that collapse or their new pitching rotation
- 24:36Speaker 5: additions and Valdez and and Verlander going to help them?
- 24:41Speaker 5: I think so. But the value is definitely there for
- 24:43Speaker 5: me to put something on the Royals.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Aj Pierzinski. What if the Chicago White Sox shocked the world.
- 24:51Speaker 4: I just did Barstool Chicago podcast saying and they were
- 24:55Speaker 4: talking about that, and it would be a shock, that's
- 24:58Speaker 4: for sure, especially in this division. But the Guardians to me,
- 25:01Speaker 4: are the team that they won the division last year,
- 25:04Speaker 4: didn't they? I'm pretty sure the Guardians.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Won after the collapse by the Tigers.
- 25:08Speaker 4: And by the way, how are the White Sox so
- 25:09Speaker 4: far behind the Twins? What if the Twins for this
- 25:12Speaker 4: offseason and they traded away like Ano their team last year,
- 25:17Speaker 4: and the White Sox are behind the Twins in this
- 25:19Speaker 4: That's what's funny to me. Other than that, Yeah, I mean,
- 25:23Speaker 4: I guess the Royals would be the one. The Tigers
- 25:25Speaker 4: are the favorites clearly, but why not The Guardians always
- 25:28Speaker 4: seem to find a way. And Steven votes going for
- 25:30Speaker 4: the three Peters, manager of the year.
- 25:32Speaker 5: If the White Sox Alana, if the White Sox do
- 25:36Speaker 5: win this division, the money, the money that AJ is
- 25:39Speaker 5: going to get after putting one hundred down and winning
- 25:41Speaker 5: three thousand, is not going to is gonna be the
- 25:43Speaker 5: least of our issues. It's still not going to pay
- 25:46Speaker 5: for meals. Two. We're gonna have an entire year of
- 25:50Speaker 5: hearing look at the White Sox. I knew it this
- 25:54Speaker 5: whole time. And then AJ is going to be going
- 25:55Speaker 5: to Chicago showing us.
- 25:59Speaker 1: If you want to you want a World Series where
- 26:02Speaker 1: and donning that uniform, you get that ring, You get
- 26:05Speaker 1: the right to be insufferable when your team in which
- 26:09Speaker 1: you helped win a World Series.
- 26:12Speaker 5: Even if the team doesn't want him back. Just the fans, Oh.
- 26:15Speaker 1: They want him back. They want him back. They're not
- 26:17Speaker 1: a vocal about it, but they do.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Who doesn't want it?
- 26:21Speaker 1: Look at this guy. Look who doesn't want this guy back?
- 26:23Speaker 5: That's Susan Schlusser said, prickly, prickly.
- 26:29Speaker 1: That's all right, prickly, I think you need to be pretty.
- 26:32Speaker 5: Ten years I wasn't that prickly. Nah, all right, and
- 26:37Speaker 5: your two thousand hits, your two thousand hits, say say
- 26:40Speaker 5: you keep it around for nineteen years.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Last division in the American League the West Marin Mari
- 26:47Speaker 1: Narros Marinaidos minus one oh five, Astros plus two seven
- 26:51Speaker 1: five all the way down to the Angels plus four thousand,
- 26:55Speaker 1: so even worse odds than the White Sox. Like this,
- 27:00Speaker 1: not like this, This one's fine.
- 27:06Speaker 5: This one's good.
- 27:07Speaker 4: That the Mariner should be heavy favorites in this division.
- 27:10Speaker 4: And I would almost I would. I would almost put
- 27:13Speaker 4: the Rangers that Rangers are the one to me for
- 27:15Speaker 4: for the money, that have a better show. I would
- 27:18Speaker 4: put the Rangers above the Astros just because again other
- 27:21Speaker 4: than after Hunter Brown and the Astros rotation, who you
- 27:23Speaker 4: got the biggest thing for me? And you know Altove
- 27:28Speaker 4: was on the bus column. Jeremy Peney is hurt right,
- 27:31Speaker 4: what is what is Alvarez gonna give him? Carlos Korea
- 27:34Speaker 4: coming off his thing and that all you know that
- 27:36Speaker 4: we just learned about. Yeah, I would almost want to
- 27:38Speaker 4: put the Rangers with the Graham Ivaldi Mackenzie Gore to
- 27:42Speaker 4: start out the season, start out a rotation, and that's skip.
- 27:45Speaker 4: Schumacher has been known to take teams with lesser talent
- 27:49Speaker 4: and lesser things and make them pretty good. See the
- 27:51Speaker 4: Marlins before they let him go for No, only god
- 27:53Speaker 4: knows why. Uh, but yeah would for me. The Rangers
- 27:56Speaker 4: are the one in this But I mean, I think
- 27:57Speaker 4: the Marriners win this division. But if you're gonna, if
- 27:59Speaker 4: you need need to bet on a team in this division,
- 28:01Speaker 4: it's the Rangers.
- 28:02Speaker 1: What is more likely that the Angels win the division
- 28:05Speaker 1: or the White Sox win the division?
- 28:08Speaker 5: More more unlikely, more unlikely? Oh, the Angels, They're in
- 28:13Speaker 5: a much better division. I mean the White Sox. I
- 28:16Speaker 5: think both teams just are are short. They're short on
- 28:20Speaker 5: the season. The Angels, I think I have a more
- 28:22Speaker 5: talented team, but they're in a tougher division. To me,
- 28:25Speaker 5: I think the best value of any of these three
- 28:28Speaker 5: boards that we just had up is exactly what AJ said.
- 28:31Speaker 5: The Rangers. It's a team that underperformed last year. It's
- 28:35Speaker 5: a team that was still kind of in it at
- 28:38Speaker 5: certain points. And do I think they're going to take
- 28:41Speaker 5: the Mariners? No?
- 28:43Speaker 1: Do?
- 28:43Speaker 5: I think the Astros have so many question marks in
- 28:47Speaker 5: their rotation. Like AJ said after Hunter Brown, you know
- 28:51Speaker 5: my come you got you got guys coming off of injuries.
- 28:55Speaker 5: You have just question marks still a winning team. I
- 28:58Speaker 5: think those top three teams are going to be over
- 29:00Speaker 5: five hundred. Can the Rangers do enough? Can the change
- 29:04Speaker 5: in bringing Nemo in and you know, having a little
- 29:08Speaker 5: bit more of a younger athletic infield, is that going
- 29:11Speaker 5: to help? Well, you lose Marcus Simion's defense, So to me,
- 29:15Speaker 5: it's the Mariner's Division. But I think there's the most
- 29:17Speaker 5: value of any of these division winners that we're picking
- 29:20Speaker 5: in the Rangers.
- 29:22Speaker 1: All right, tune in tomorrow. Scott will take you guys
