- 0:02Ange, you just... Okay, so everyone listening,
- 0:05Angela just messaged us saying, I have an idea
- 0:08for an episode. Let's talk about it. And do you
- 0:12mean right now? Totally. Let's do it. Yeah, I
- 0:15guess. I don't know what time it is, but let's
- 0:18do it. Hell yeah. Coming up... Why are people
- 0:21so determined to investigate sacred places? I
- 0:24have no idea. Ange, why did you drop this one
- 0:28on us spontaneously? Let's not talk about this.
- 0:30Let's never talk about it. So Ange, it's finally
- 0:34happening. You said you had an idea for a topic,
- 0:38so now it's our turn to ask you. What's the topic?
- 0:41So, what I was thinking, I don't know what you
- 0:45were talking about, Brianna, but it sparked the
- 0:47idea of... How long do you have to wait to investigate
- 0:52a place that has tragic history or a specific
- 0:55person until it becomes disrespectful? So we're
- 1:00talking about the hashtag too soon. Too soon.
- 1:04Interesting. Welcome to our podcast where we
- 1:07take deep dives looking at various topics through
- 1:09a paranormal lens. Okay. Specifically what I'm
- 1:16thinking is This may sound kind of dark, but
- 1:21do you know how we are? What are you laughing
- 1:25about, Ben? Should I rattle off all the dark
- 1:29stuff that only you have said on this podcast?
- 1:35Okay, continue. Okay, so this is what I'm talking
- 1:38about. So, you know, in a few months from now.
- 1:41We are going to Gettysburg. The Paranormal Research
- 1:44Symposium is happening, and we're presenting
- 1:46remote contact. It's so exciting. Yeah. I know,
- 1:49but other than just that, Gettysburg is known
- 1:52to have a lot of paranormal activity, specifically
- 1:55due to the war that happened there in that big
- 1:57battle that killed over 7 ,000 people in a three
- 2:02-day span. And by that big war, you mean the
- 2:06Civil War. The Civil War. The Civil War. You
- 2:10know, that thing. The one and only. You know,
- 2:12the American Civil War. That war. Okay, glad
- 2:20we're on the same page. But, yeah. I hope everyone
- 2:22else is listening to this as well. But I'm just
- 2:27thinking about that. Those short three days.
- 2:33So many people died. And I'm thinking back to,
- 2:40like, maybe, like, for example, 9 -11, where,
- 2:45like, 2 ,000 people died. And, you know, you
- 2:49would never catch anyone going to the 9 -11 memorial
- 2:53sites and doing a ghost hunt. Yeah. So, when,
- 3:00in, like, a few hundred years from now, or whenever,
- 3:03are people going to start doing, like, ghost
- 3:05hunts? at these modern tragedies yeah tragedies
- 3:12because you know if you if ghost hunting was
- 3:15like a thing back during the civil war i guarantee
- 3:19people weren't ever planning on going to the
- 3:22battlefield to investigate you know but all of
- 3:26a sudden now it's okay to do that yeah where
- 3:30thousands of people die question that's that's
- 3:32a really really good question um Because I feel
- 3:36like it has a lot to do with, like, well, the
- 3:40time. Time, for sure, yeah. What it was, how
- 3:46big of an impact was it on history? And, like,
- 3:53because, like you mentioned, 9 -11. Like, that
- 3:56was a major historical event. That was heard
- 4:02and felt around the world. And kind of changed
- 4:05our country. I mean Civil War did too. I feel
- 4:09like. I don't want to say. It is different. Than
- 4:14a war. But also like. I don't know. It's so hard
- 4:19to say. It is so hard to think. One of the places.
- 4:25That we have investigated. That is like similar
- 4:27to this. Is like. The Bath. I was thinking of
- 4:32that one as well, yeah. Bath, it's kind of your
- 4:36small town America. Most people here are generations.
- 4:40It's cool, you know, everybody kind of looks
- 4:41out for each other. You know, people want their
- 4:43community to be safe. They want their community
- 4:45to be a place to live. At first glance, Bath,
- 4:48Michigan looks like a place where nothing bad
- 4:50could happen. Friday marks 85 years since the
- 4:55horrific bombing of a school in Bath Township.
- 4:57Even after all the attacks at schools nationwide,
- 5:00including Columbine Sandy Hook, the most deadly
- 5:02act of school violence in US history happened
- 5:04right here in mid Michigan. Yeah, bath. So the
- 5:08the still to this day, the deadliest school attack.
- 5:12ever the most amount of kids that died in any
- 5:15school related tragedy worse than columbine worse
- 5:18than sandy hook uh was in bath michigan in 1927
- 5:22next year's 100 year anniversary of this tragedy
- 5:25um it was a bombing and um it was at the old
- 5:30school there uh where the current middle school
- 5:32uh is across the street and they have a museum
- 5:35and i hear they just got a big grant uh funding
- 5:39which is really exciting so to expand they have
- 5:42a little museum in the current middle school
- 5:44uh lobby area which is across from where the
- 5:48old school was um there's like a little memorial
- 5:51and a cupola and everything this plaque was put
- 5:55here in memory of those who perished in the bath
- 5:58school disaster on may 18 1927. My name is Susan
- 6:03Hagerman. My parents were on the original committee
- 6:07of the Bath School Museum. Everybody on the committee
- 6:10is directly related to someone that was in the
- 6:14explosion. Side note, I did my capstone project
- 6:19at MSU in the documentary film production program.
- 6:23I have a degree in documentary film production,
- 6:26and my capstone project was a little documentary
- 6:28on the Bath Museum. that one i was mentioning
- 6:33was in the middle school and it was actually
- 6:35during covid and it was the first year in like
- 6:3890 something years they couldn't have their memorial
- 6:40service because of covid so i did this little
- 6:4310 minute short film kind of honoring the you
- 6:48know volunteers um and their dedication to preserving
- 6:52the history um and of course honoring all the
- 6:56victims um in lieu of this memorial service they
- 7:01couldn't have. Our alumni reunion, we had to
- 7:04cancel it. We were very sad about that. It's
- 7:10the first time since, well, we started having
- 7:14these in the 1980s. It was the first time we've
- 7:16ever had to cancel one. I think I'm the most
- 7:20disappointed one that they're not having it this
- 7:21year because I love going, but if I know the
- 7:24people there like I know them, they will definitely
- 7:26feel it the day anyway. It's in their DNA. There's
- 7:29something about community and gathering and that
- 7:32they can't do it. I suspect hurts. It's a deep
- 7:37emotional scar. I mean, people lost family they
- 7:41would never meet. A whole generation of children
- 7:43are wiped out. I interviewed a lot of people.
- 7:45I interviewed the current police chief of Bath.
- 7:48And he, out of the blue, not knowing anything
- 7:51about me, said, oh yeah. And this didn't even
- 7:55make it in the short film. because this was a
- 7:57history short film for school, he said, oh yeah,
- 8:01still to this day, I see ghost hunters out there.
- 8:04And I'm like, oh? And he was like, people are
- 8:07always ghost hunting, and sometimes I hop out
- 8:09of my car, because that's so cool, and I join
- 8:11them, and blah, blah, blah. So, to your point,
- 8:16is it too soon? I don't know, I have mixed feelings,
- 8:20because... That's probably like, people started
- 8:23ghost hunting, what, maybe like... 80 80 years
- 8:28from then you know yeah because like i i mixed
- 8:31feelings because i i did the whole documentary
- 8:33and stuff and i was intimately like i was there
- 8:36all the time yes there is a strong you can feel
- 8:39strong sad like heavy sadness there mostly i
- 8:42think due to the history i wouldn't advise or
- 8:45recommend ghost hunting there just because i
- 8:47think i don't know maybe a good like uh frame
- 8:53of reference for like time frame is like if there
- 8:56are no direct relatives that are related to the
- 9:00event or people who passed in the event still
- 9:03alive i know when you approach a case like bath
- 9:06from a history perspective and you get so intimately
- 9:10connected with the real people still there every
- 9:13day yeah you get a little attached to it you
- 9:15know um i would hate for someone to come because
- 9:19we know a lot of weirdos in the paranormal field
- 9:22i would hate for someone to come and exploit
- 9:25the haunting or misrepresent the real history
- 9:27or do it incorrectly is it like i don't know
- 9:31is that like egotistical to be like i wouldn't
- 9:33recommend people go there because they're gonna
- 9:35fuck it up yeah no i i don't i don't disagree
- 9:38with that But if you do it respectfully, if we
- 9:41went and investigated there, Aiden, this is where
- 9:43the ego, I think, comes in. But what makes us
- 9:46different compared to other people investigating?
- 9:48Because our approach. Because, like, you can't
- 9:51control. What makes us different compared to
- 9:54other ghost hunters? Anyone can go to a cemetery
- 9:56or an outdoor monument and ghost hunt and then
- 9:59post it on the internet these days. It's different
- 10:01if you go indoors and you're allowed in, right?
- 10:05inside and you know usually there's some element
- 10:08of vetting or you need to get written permission
- 10:09or you need to like clearly outline how you're
- 10:12going to portray the history i would hate for
- 10:15someone who's just looking for clicks to sensationalize
- 10:19especially this year with a hundred year anniversary
- 10:21of bath coming up to sensationalize or say anything
- 10:25about the victims that because what differentiates
- 10:27us is you know we're going to go in we have intimate
- 10:30knowledge of the history we know the people we
- 10:33know the area We're not going to go in and make
- 10:35claims saying, I just contacted so -and -so and
- 10:38so -and -so, and he's saying X, Y, and Z about
- 10:40the day of the disaster. We're not going to go
- 10:42out and make all these bold claims and tell all
- 10:46the people in the community, this is happening
- 10:48there, and this is what you got to do about it.
- 10:51Yeah. You don't know what kind of, and you know
- 10:54exactly what I'm talking about. There could be
- 10:56people that go out, investigate, and they come
- 10:59out with weird. stuff that would just ruin it
- 11:02for everyone because they're saying all this
- 11:03stuff that there's still people in the community
- 11:06second third generation survivors they would
- 11:09say you said what about my grandma yeah exactly
- 11:12we would never say anything like that but i still
- 11:16feel like it's almost still too soon because
- 11:20100 years it's only been 100 years in the big
- 11:24scheme of things that is nothing in this time
- 11:27of the universe in our yeah since earth has been
- 11:30here that is nothing like it almost it seems
- 11:33it's in the 20s too soon yeah do you know how
- 11:37many years from now so that's a hundred years
- 11:39from ago like that's still like barely nothing
- 11:42so you're saying there's still people no ghosts
- 11:45we shouldn't we shouldn't investigate anywhere
- 11:47that is allegedly haunted by a spirit from the
- 11:5020s or the 30s i'm not saying that i'm just saying
- 11:54like that's that speaking tragedy events yeah
- 11:59like major okay yeah yeah because i'm gonna i
- 12:01was saying like that was such a tragic event
- 12:04yeah like and i i don't know like obviously no
- 12:08one knows what happens in the afterlife or whatever
- 12:10but i'd be like since that that was barely no
- 12:15time ago or whatever let let the spirits heal
- 12:20and do whatever they need to do yeah since that
- 12:24happened and i feel like even though it's 100
- 12:25years from then since it was such a tragic event
- 12:29and stuff like that it doesn't seem like enough
- 12:31time still for them to for the spirits to really
- 12:35like heal or whatever that yeah yeah we did we
- 12:39did go as a group full full disclosure we did
- 12:42go as a group to pay our respects to a couple
- 12:45of the victims and then when we're at the cemetery
- 12:47paying our respects we had paranormal stuff happen
- 12:49so we investigated but we didn't have any experiences
- 12:53directly related to the you know certain graves
- 12:56and we certainly never said it was because of
- 12:59them yeah i'm just thinking i'm pretty sure i
- 13:04have only been to the bath memorial like once
- 13:07and i i just in for me too like it because even
- 13:13though yeah it was a hundred years ago I feel
- 13:17like it's also still a little too soon. I agree,
- 13:19but you have to have a differentiation between
- 13:21what's a tragic event and on a micro level, let's
- 13:26say we go to murder -suicide locations all the
- 13:30time. A murder -suicide for a community on a
- 13:33small micro level, that's tragic. How do you
- 13:38define tragedy? I think that's a kind of deep
- 13:41question. that's i i'm just thinking about like
- 13:45imagine 100 years from now there's ghost hunters
- 13:48going to the property where sandy hook happened
- 13:52like that's just mind -blowing to me But if ghost
- 13:56hunting is still a thing from 100 years from
- 13:59now, that probably will be happening. And it's
- 14:02just mind -blowing to me. So I feel the same
- 14:04way for, like, the Bass Massacre situation. I
- 14:08agree. It doesn't seem right. Like, imagine if
- 14:12you're, like, a person that was alive during
- 14:16that time and thinking, like, oh, 100 years from
- 14:18now, there's going to be people going to ghost
- 14:20hunt. Like, it's just, like, be in their shoes.
- 14:24It doesn't seem right. And even if, like, I know
- 14:28I said, like, if we were to, I don't even have
- 14:32any, why would we ever investigate there? Yeah.
- 14:36I would be so uptight about an investigation
- 14:40there. But there's people who do, though. I just
- 14:45don't know, you don't need to. Anywhere can,
- 14:47do we agree that anywhere, we talked about this,
- 14:50anywhere can be haunted, right? Yeah. So if anywhere
- 14:53is haunted, Why are you going to such a, like,
- 14:57baseline? Like, if you're already going to be
- 14:59so uptight about an investigation and worried
- 15:02about the sensitivities behind it and all this
- 15:06stuff, why even bother? Why do you need to? What's
- 15:09the point? I feel like it's just, it does really
- 15:12depend on the situation as well. It's just, it's
- 15:17like when you... I'm specifically thinking of
- 15:21haunted asylums and stuff. There's a lot of people
- 15:23that had terrible things that happened to them
- 15:26there and stuff like that. I know some people
- 15:28may disagree with me about this, but I'm thinking
- 15:32of certain asylums or whatever. You're going
- 15:35there investigating these tragic events that
- 15:37may have only happened like 100 years from now,
- 15:40but that history is so important to prevent.
- 15:46that stuff from happening again in the future
- 15:49like it almost seems fine and like okay to investigate
- 15:54that just to keep that history alive i'd argue
- 15:58too that's a mass scale systemic tragedy like
- 16:01that's an american tragedy not like a but compared
- 16:04to like the bath massacre or something like that
- 16:07that was just yeah that's different that is just
- 16:11one singular event were children were harmed
- 16:15for no good freaking reason it's just like let
- 16:20them rest it's it was a one singular event it's
- 16:25like i don't know maybe like a few hundred years
- 16:29from now it would be it would be different or
- 16:31whatever people choose to go there and investigate
- 16:33or whatever but it's just kind of i don't know
- 16:35if you if you understand my differences whatever
- 16:39it makes sense it makes total sense to me i don't
- 16:42know it's like you can prevent like terrible
- 16:45events happening in future hospitals or whatever
- 16:49and treatment or whatever but you know there's
- 16:52always going to be a wacko that comes in and
- 16:54kills a bunch of people you can't control every
- 16:59single one but you can you can control a specific
- 17:04treatment or whatever if that makes sense i don't
- 17:07know i i don't i feel like there's going to be
- 17:08some people who disagree with me about that that's
- 17:11my opinion and we all should have opinions brie
- 17:15what what are you thinking about you've been
- 17:17a little quiet i have no idea yeah why did you
- 17:23drop this one on us spontaneously yeah this is
- 17:26this is a hard one to drop on us i mean at least
- 17:29everyone knows like this is our real organic
- 17:33natural opinions honest yeah yeah and we all
- 17:37i think we all agree that there is such a thing
- 17:39as places okay i disagree that there's such a
- 17:46thing as too soon or too you know or whatever
- 17:49i just think there are some places that shouldn't
- 17:52be investigated how about that yeah i think yes
- 17:55i don't think it's worth quibbling about In 100
- 17:59years, it'll be okay. In 200, it's just like,
- 18:02what's the point? I was just about to say, I
- 18:04feel like there are places where you're okay
- 18:07to investigate, there's places where you need
- 18:09to tread carefully to investigate, and there's
- 18:11just places you shouldn't investigate at all.
- 18:14And there are some tragedies that have occurred,
- 18:19and you should never try to... invest like do
- 18:26a paranormal investigation in those areas like
- 18:28just let them rest yes same same goes for like
- 18:35um places you have to trespass no no to trespassing
- 18:39um native american locations too it's like that's
- 18:44not for us to do yeah so that's that was also
- 18:48a good example yeah that's and we all agree on
- 18:52on that So there's just, like, a lot of places,
- 18:56like, they don't need to be investigated anyways.
- 19:01If, like, why are people so determined to investigate
- 19:05these, like, sacred or tragic places? Like, is
- 19:09it the shock and awe, the sensationalistic aspect
- 19:13of it? That's, again, going back to, like, why
- 19:15I was uptight. I think it's part of it, yeah.
- 19:16Like, if you really want to investigate the bath
- 19:18site to go back to there, because that's the
- 19:20place we have personal connection with, if you...
- 19:22are so desperate to investigate bath and you
- 19:25travel far and away to invest it's like what
- 19:28your intentions are probably to sensationalize
- 19:32and i don't agree with sensationalizing that
- 19:35type of stuff anyway so i guess that's like there's
- 19:38no point there's a difference between well my
- 19:43mindset is is keeping history alive and this
- 19:47goes along with the whole like many asylum aspects
- 19:51of it you know there's so many places that are
- 19:55getting demolished and people are just wanting
- 19:58to forget the history because you know it's a
- 20:01bad history especially during like for america
- 20:05and stuff so there's a lot of people out there
- 20:06who's like let's not talk about this let's never
- 20:09talk about it let's just get rid of it but like
- 20:12i disagree with that because it's like And it's,
- 20:15like, a good thing that these, like, ghost hunters
- 20:18are coming in and investigating because there
- 20:21are some of the only few people in this world
- 20:25that care about these locations and keeping that
- 20:29history alive to keep people learning and learn
- 20:32from the mistakes from the past. And not a lot
- 20:34of people understand that, you know? That's the
- 20:37difference between something like that and, like,
- 20:40that one singular event in the past that... That's
- 20:45the only event that will ever happen there, you
- 20:47know? Absolutely. And you don't need... I completely
- 20:51agree with what you're talking about. Keeping
- 20:52history alive is one of our main goals and should
- 20:56be every ghost hunter's main goal. But, you know,
- 21:00there's a museum preserving history. This is
- 21:03a well -known location of a tragedy. Same with
- 21:079 -11. Do you need a ghost hunter going to the
- 21:10Twin Towers to keep 9 -11 history alive? It's
- 21:13like... no they're maybe maybe in the future
- 21:16yes maybe in the future because there's a lot
- 21:19of young people there's people who are born after
- 21:229 -11 that plainly just do not understand the
- 21:26extent of 9 -11 and how that impacted everyone
- 21:31you know and as time goes on there could be people
- 21:35That history could just plainly die as time goes
- 21:38on. So maybe someday in the future, having ghost
- 21:42hunters coming in can help keep that history
- 21:45alive. You never know. I feel like in that circumstance,
- 21:52I feel like that's not going to be a possibility.
- 21:56it's so in interwoven in the history like it's
- 22:01in history books and like yeah it i agree it's
- 22:05unfathomable but also we are seeing at unprecedented
- 22:08rates lately um you know museums are getting
- 22:13funding taken away it's harder to get grant so
- 22:16there's there's people taking like white whitewashing
- 22:20history and stuff like that it's it's a thing
- 22:23i hate to say if you agree with it or not it
- 22:25is no it's true it's true yeah yes and people
- 22:28don't believe in history people don't believe
- 22:30in history like they don't yeah believe in science
- 22:32a few years is crazy so in a hypothetical don't
- 22:37think it's gonna happen but in a we have to say
- 22:41kind of Maybe hypothetical. I don't think the
- 22:439 -11, but maybe some of the other tragedies
- 22:46at not such a national scale. You're saying it's
- 22:50not appropriate, but if the history is forgotten,
- 22:53ghost hunters should be called upon because it
- 22:56should be their duty to preserve. You make that
- 23:00sound weird. It's not the ghost hunter's duty
- 23:03to do it. It is. One of the main duties of a
- 23:07ghost hunter is to preserve. forgotten history
- 23:12and to and to share a grounded non -sensationalistic
- 23:17accurate account accurate representation of real
- 23:22history that people either don't want to talk
- 23:24about have shied away from isn't written in the
- 23:26history books or is plainly you know just forgotten
- 23:31in general or people don't not enough people
- 23:33know about so yeah Ghost hunters should be historians
- 23:36and they should be called upon to go into and
- 23:39be on the ground investigators of this forgotten
- 23:43lore and forgotten history in a grounded manner.
- 23:47I think it is a duty. Because when history is
- 23:50forgotten, who are you going to call? Ghostbusters!
- 23:56Sorry. We got to end on that, don't we? Yeah,
- 24:04no, sorry. Any final thoughts? It just happened.
- 24:09Any final thoughts here? I'm sorry if I caused
- 24:13such a deep thinking conversation. No, it's a
- 24:18good conversation. It's a great conversation
- 24:20we should have. And I think that's everything,
- 24:24something that needs to be talked about in the
- 24:28paranormal society. when when is it appropriate
- 24:32if ever appropriate and i think the biggest thing
- 24:37is like like we've talked about is not sensationalizing
- 24:41the hauntings and but we need to talk about the
- 24:48history yeah that's the biggest thing yeah yeah
- 24:53yeah i think for a Big topic that we never explicitly
- 25:00talked about all as a group. I think we all actually
- 25:02kind of agree on all points. Wow. Wow. So I don't
- 25:09think we need to just beat a dead horse. We can
- 25:13wrap this up. Yeah, we really hit the nail on
- 25:19its head. I think you got it right this time.
- 25:22I think I got it right this time too. Wow. Okay.
- 25:27And anything else? No. Okay. Well, thank God
- 25:34we asked you what the topic was because we got
- 25:40that conversation. You guys were going in blind.
- 25:43Oh, dear. Now we know how it feels. Bree, this
- 25:48whole episode, I'll just be like, oh God, oh
- 25:51God, my brain. That's like Angela when we're
- 25:53talking about like fucking cheese layers just
- 25:55because it's like she goes in blind. Oh, goodness.
