- 0:00Happy Friday morning everybody. Today's subject.
- 0:05I know for a fact that NASCAR is all hands on deck.
- 0:11They are going to make it right. This does make me happy.
- 0:19They realize what happened and now it, it took them a while and
- 0:23they definitely made some decisions that were not.
- 0:29We're not the way to go. Let's put it that way.
- 0:31You know, when you think of people, it's easy for all of us
- 0:36to look back and go, yeah, we shouldn't have done that.
- 0:39I'll never forget, you know, do you older people, do you
- 0:44remember when I had that Dirt Devil sponsor?
- 0:47Well, they sold the heck out of those and it was a big success.
- 0:53And the president, his name was John Balch.
- 0:56I think of it, or Mr. Balch, whatever.
- 0:59Anyway, they sponsored us. It was a huge success.
- 1:02Sold millions of those little Dirt Devil vacuum cleaners.
- 1:06They were a hit. And as the year ended, you know,
- 1:10they had a contract to sponsor me again and let's say in 1994.
- 1:16So that was 93. They were going to go in again
- 1:18in 94. Well, they had a meeting with
- 1:23Felix Sabatas and they they told Felix, they said, man, we need
- 1:28out of this contract. We messed up.
- 1:31It's like, my God, this is one of the greatest sponsor, you
- 1:35know, interactions we've ever had.
- 1:37And they said, yeah, what we did was we made a lot of money, but
- 1:41we spent all the money on marketing.
- 1:46Think about it. You make so much money, but you
- 1:50spend all that money on marketing.
- 1:53Now I will say that that dirt devil, if you remember, there
- 1:56was a little dog in that commercial and that was the
- 1:59president. But they, they put all these TV
- 2:03commercials up. They, they made a lot of money,
- 2:06but they spent too much money. So there's got to be a balance.
- 2:11And I look at NASCAR like that. They just went All in, all in
- 2:16they, you know, and now you look back and and you realize how
- 2:20much they messed up. But you don't know that until
- 2:25you messed up. But it takes a mature business
- 2:28person to say I'll never do that again.
- 2:33And so just for a minute, let's talk about what NASCAR did bad
- 2:37and what they can do to make it right.
- 2:39The first thing NASCAR did bad was they, this is my opinion.
- 2:47They built too many big mile and a half race tracks.
- 2:52You know what, we had the perfect tracks.
- 2:54We had Atlanta, we had Rockingham, you know, I mean,
- 3:00really at that point, that was it.
- 3:02Charlotte was in there. Respond right here.
- 3:05But you know, back in the 8 late 80s, early 90s, you had the
- 3:10perfect amount of mile and a half tracks.
- 3:13And then all of a sudden they said, wow, we got such a big
- 3:18crowd and we, we need more seats.
- 3:21So we'll build bigger race tracks.
- 3:24That was the wrong thing to do. They should have just done what
- 3:28they've done at Bristol. They should have built the seats
- 3:30up because they went out to California and they built that
- 3:33big old mile and a half track, which was fine.
- 3:37But then the first 10-15 years it was boring.
- 3:40We had to wait till the asphalt to mature and it was boring.
- 3:45You know, they went to Chicago, they built that big old mile and
- 3:50a half. They went to Kentucky, they
- 3:51built that big old mile and a half.
- 3:54OK, that's fine, you say, but here's what they did wrong.
- 3:57They got rid of Rockingham, they got rid of Wilkesboro.
- 4:03They left the tracks that were exciting.
- 4:08You know where you'd get into each other.
- 4:10You, you, you can't get into each other on those big mile and
- 4:13a half race tracks or else you're out.
- 4:15So it was just about it was kind of like flying a, an airplane.
- 4:20Now, listen, I know there's a lot of race car drivers that
- 4:23like those mile and a half, but let's admit it, they're not as
- 4:27exciting as a Rockingham or, or you know, I think Rockingham to
- 4:32me, I love that track because you were always on each other
- 4:35and the fans recognized and they were on their feet.
- 4:38How about coming off at turn 4 there that dog leg.
- 4:41Those finishes were awesome. So I think they built too many
- 4:45mile and 1/2 right away. Then the next thing they did
- 4:48wrong was they got greedy. They were so big that they would
- 4:53say OK you got to buy 1 ticket for everything.
- 4:57You got to show up Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the dirt
- 5:02racing fans are like, man, we just want to show up Sunday.
- 5:07Some of the tracks were guilty of no, you got to buy the truck
- 5:11taken on Friday, you got to buy the Xfinity, take it on
- 5:15Saturday, you got to buy the Cup, take it on Sunday and just
- 5:17priced everybody out. So I'm going to end like this.
- 5:25They did a lot of wrong things, but I do know that they have
- 5:31been humbled mightily. NASCAR has been humbled mightily
- 5:36and I know for a fact they hear y'all and they are going to go
- 5:41on tour in 2026 and they're going to make it right now.
- 5:47I know they did hire. If you remember, I cracked a
- 5:50joke. They hired this new media
- 5:51company to bring, you know, that rally cry back.
- 5:55Earnhardt's my man to the front. To the front.
- 6:03And at first I thought, well, that sounds funny.
- 6:05They could have called me up. I'd have helped them.
- 6:08I will help them this year. If NASCAR calls me, I will help
- 6:12them. And here's what I'm telling
- 6:14them. I will come to a couple race
- 6:17tracks and I will work on bringing my friends, my great
- 6:24race car driver friends. I'll call them up and I'll say,
- 6:26hey, you want to go here, You want to go there and we'll have
- 6:29a good old bull session. Maybe Mark Martin will come,
- 6:34maybe Dale Junior will come, maybe Kenny Schrader will come,
- 6:38Maybe I can get brothers, Brother, Rusty and Mike to come,
- 6:41Who knows? And what, we'll go behind the
- 6:44midway and all of you can listen to us tell some old stories.
- 6:48But we got to repair NASCAR and we got to get back.
- 6:52And that's a couple of my ideals.
- 6:54Respond right here. It is the day after Christmas
- 7:00and we had a wonderful Christmas, maybe one of the best
- 7:03Christmases we've ever had because the grandbabies are
- 7:09little more grown up. They know what Santa Claus
- 7:12brought them, and yet the youngest one is maybe 6-7 months
- 7:18old. Lenny, she's a girl, she's so
- 7:22sweet, she smiles all the time. We really had a good time.
- 7:29Now Sunday we're going to go downtown Saint Louis and
- 7:34celebrate all the birthdays that we have.
- 7:38We got a lot of birthdays right around this area.
- 7:42Oldest daughter Brooke is January 4th.
- 7:46We got my wife Kim. January 14th we got my youngest
- 7:511, Brittany. December 28th, Justin, my gosh,
- 7:55we got Jacob. Anyway, you get the point.
- 7:58We got like 5 or 6 birthdays right there.
- 8:01So we decided every year from now on, we're going to celebrate
- 8:06everybody's birthdays at one time because if we don't, we'll
- 8:10just be going from house to house and everybody agrees with
- 8:15it. So Sunday we go down to Union
- 8:17Station, downtown Saint Louis, and we go to Landry's Wonderful
- 8:22restaurant right behind Union Station.
- 8:25The aquarium's there, the big Ferris wheel, merry go round for
- 8:31the kids. So we're looking forward to
- 8:33that. Have a great Friday, everybody,
- 8:35and a great weekend. And remember, as always, go to
- 8:39shopkennywalls.com. We got a new special, it's
- 8:42called Coffee with Kenny Kit. You can get a coffee mug, a
- 8:48shirt and a decal for $5 off Shop kennywalls.com.
- 8:54Have a great weekend.
