- 1:43welcoming you back to the second game of the Sunday afternoon doubleheader.
- 1:47At the house in the first game, the Reds on Johnny Bench's seventh inning home run with Joe Morgan-Ave on board,
- 1:53gave the Reds a 2-1 victory, Gary Nolan the winner and right-hander Rick Rushell the tough luck loser.
- 1:59Here in the second game, Clay Kirby will go for Cincinnati after his fourth victory of the year.
- 2:03And for the Chicago Cubs, it will be a left-hander, formerly with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and that would be Jeff Zahn.
- 2:10We'll be back with the second game lineups in just a moment.
- 2:13There's always got to be an end to the day, there always comes a time when we go our own way,
- 2:28I gave it all I had but now the end, the show is over, goodnight my friend.
- 2:43Now it's time to go my own way, for a fear that's still made the right way,
- 2:53it's the moment every beer lover knows, when you and your day with the Strohs,
- 3:03from one beer lover to another Strohs, Strohs.
- 3:10That was Slow-Mo for the Stroh Brewery Company, Detroit, Michigan, family brewers for 200 years.
- 3:20Okay, if you're ready now, here are the second game lineups, first for the Chicago Cubs,
- 3:24their leadoff batter will be shortstop Rob Sparing.
- 3:27Hitting number two and playing left field is champ Summers.

- 3:55Batting number nine and pitching for Chicago is left-hander Jeff Zahn.
- 4:00Again going over the cup batting order in the second game, it's Sparing at shortstop,
- 4:03Summers in left field, and Matlock at third.
- 4:07Mundy in center, Thornton at first base, and Morales in right.
- 4:11With 3-0 at second, Midderwall catching and Zahn pitching.

- 5:17without the express written consent of Cincinnati Reds, Inc. is prohibited.
- 5:22The announcers on this broadcast are employed by the Cincinnati Reds, Inc.
- 5:27The Reds are on the field, Clay Kirby, last out as he makes his way
- 5:31towards the Riverfront Stadium mound.
- 5:33Not only do we have a capacity house here at Riverfront Stadium this afternoon,
- 5:37we've got a standing room only crowd, and Joe, they saw quite some game in number one.
- 5:42Well, the way it ended up, I tell you, is really a little shaky,
- 5:46particularly after Joe had trouble.
- 5:49It looked like he really lost his balance or stumbled on the ground ball by Garrett,
- 5:54and then Don Kessinger, who is a guy that you don't strike out,
- 5:59and just more or less lays the bat on the ball, tries to hit it somewhere,
- 6:03and you have to be a little concerned, but Gary did a good job on him,
- 6:06and he got a nice, soft fly ball to Geronimo at the end of the game,
- 6:10but both of them pitched excellent baseball.
- 6:13You just can't ask to see a better-pitched ballgame than Rick Ruschel worked,
- 6:19and of course Gary Nolan, and Rick making that one bad pitch, really, to Johnny Bench,
- 6:24and I tell you, I don't think John is going to hit him much harder than that.
- 6:28That was just a shot out of his ballpark, but a tough loss for Rick Ruschel
- 6:33and a big win for Gary Nolan.
- 6:36Really, well, it's just amazing the way that young man can pitch.
- 6:41I don't think he threw five balls down the center of the plate all day,
- 6:45or it sure didn't seem that way.
- 6:47As a result of the victory, the Reds have now won 15 of their last 18 games,
- 6:51and they are in the ninth inning at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia,
- 6:54with Philadelphia hanging on to a 4-2 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 6:59If that game should end up in Philadelphia's favor,
- 7:01the Reds would have one full game edge on the Dodgers
- 7:04in the National League Western Division race,
- 7:06and while the clay curvy can jerk us a good one up here in the second game,
- 7:10we can make it a game and a half lead.
- 7:13Well, as we said before the game, you can't win two if you don't win the first one,
- 7:19so we got a good chance to win two.
- 7:23Manager Jim Marshall shakes things up a bit here in the second game.
- 7:26Kessinger sitting it out.
- 7:28Jose Card now sitting it out.
- 7:30He was in left field in the first game.
- 7:32He's a good example for Alice into the lineup for the first time in this series.
- 7:36Spurring a right-handed batter.
- 7:39Seen him once or twice so far in the series, batting 192.
- 7:43The pitch on the way from Kirby is hit hard, and Rose hands it a third.
- 7:50Line drive, and I'll tell you, it looked like it was headed toward left field,
- 7:53but Pete went down to his left and made the play on it.
- 7:59The play never ceases to amaze with his defensive work that has gotten better
- 8:03and better and better at third base.
- 8:07One out, and here's left fielder Champ Summers,
- 8:09who delivered a ninth inning pitch single off of Gary Nolan in game number one.
- 8:14Summers batting 240.
- 8:17Left-handed hitter.
- 8:19Got Rose playing just a bit in the third base as Kirby fires,
- 8:22and Summers takes strike one.
- 8:24Playmaking his 11th appearance of the year and his eighth start.
- 8:34Breaking ball is hit in the air to center field.
- 8:37Foster drifting back, looking skyward, makes the catch, two away.
- 8:44Batter will be third baseman Bill Madlock.
- 8:53Now we congratulate the Reds' director of promotion, Roger Rulu,
- 8:57who is charged with a responsibility every time a doubleheader is played here
- 9:00to provide between-game entertainment.
- 9:03I'll tell you, we heard a group that really could lay out the sounds between games today.
- 9:07The East Central High School Marching Band from Brookville, Indiana.
- 9:12Better say St. Leon, too.
- 9:15Okay, St. Leon.
- 9:18You tell me to say it, I'll say it.
- 9:21Here's Madlock with two out.
- 9:24Batting 333, the pitch.
- 9:26Well, Kirby bounces one up there and away from Plummer.
- 9:29That's quite an interesting story, isn't it, Marty?
- 9:32I think they have something around 800 students and 230 of them in the band.
- 9:38Must play six-man football.
- 9:42Well, they double it up a bit.
- 9:441-0 delivery. Hit hard and by Concepciona.
- 9:46A hit to center field by Bill Madlock, who, boy, continues to swing a very, very hot bat for Chicago.
- 9:53He had three hits in the first game and that base hit right there, his sixth,
- 10:00in the four games played here at Riverfront Stadium.
- 10:04So the inning extended for center fielder Rick Mundy.
- 10:07Mundy batting 294.
- 10:10Has five homers and 25 RBI's.
- 10:17Madlock, short lead at first base.
- 10:19Kirby checking, delivers, taking high ball one.
- 10:23Defensively for Cincinnati, Perez at first, Morgan at second.
- 10:27Concepciona shortstop, Rose at third.
- 10:30Johnny Bench in left field.
- 10:32George Foster in center and Merv Redmond in right.
- 10:35Plummer behind the plate.
- 10:36And the 1-0 to Mundy is swung out and missed.
- 10:39A ball and one strike.
- 10:49Kirby, a pitcher known for taking his time out on the mound.
- 10:56Coming back with a 1-1 pitch and Mundy fouls this one over the screen behind the plate.
- 11:00One ball and two strikes.
- 11:05Well it might sound redundant but boy it certainly bears pointing up again how super the pitching has been for Cincinnati lately.
- 11:13Five times now in the last seven games.
- 11:15Red starters have gone the distance.
- 11:18Gary Nolan did in the first game, beating Rushell in the Cubs 2-1.
- 11:24Mundy hits a fly ball back in the right field.
- 11:26Redmond will have room to play it.
- 11:28He makes the catch and that's it for Chicago in the first inning.
- 11:31No runs, one hit.
- 11:33No errors with one man left on at the end of a half inning of play in our second game.
- 11:37The Cubs nothing.
- 11:38The Reds are coming back.
- 11:43Hello sunshine.
- 11:46Hello mountain dew.
- 11:49With the lemon look of sunshine.
- 11:53And the different taste that's right for you.
- 11:57It's precious sunrise.
- 12:00It pours like sunshine.
- 12:04Refreshing that morning, the whole day.
- 12:11Hello sunshine.
- 12:14Hello sunshine.
- 12:18Oh no mountain dew.
- 12:24Mountain dew, a totally different soft drink with a lemony freshness and color of sunshine.
- 12:29Brighten your day with Mountain Dew.
- 12:32Hello sunshine.
- 12:35Hello mountain dew.
- 12:42While the young man charged with the responsibility of trying to get the Cubs one win in this four game series is the left-hander Jeff Zahn.
- 12:49Six-one, 180-pounder from Los Angeles, California.
- 12:54Zahn, 29 years old, acquired along with pitcher Eddie Solomon from the Dodgers on the 2nd of May for right-hander Burt Hooten.
- 13:03And Zahn coming into this game has won one and lost two with a 583 earned run average.
- 13:08And of those decisions, two of the three have been with the Cubs.
- 13:13He's won a game, he's lost a game.
- 13:15And a 521 ERA as he makes his fourth start on the Chicago uniform does not have a complete game.
- 13:22He'll be facing Rose first, then Concepcion, then Morgan.
- 13:25At the bottom of inning number one, here's a pitch to Pete, swung on and fouled off to the right and out of play.
- 13:34Rose going 0 for 3 in the first game was hit by a pitch.
- 13:37He's batting 293.
- 13:42Zahn appearing in 21 games last year with the Dodgers starting 10.
- 13:49He's one and one with Pete Rose and really put together a very impressive 203 earned run average.
- 13:56In those 21 appearances, one three out of eight decisions.
- 14:00Now the one-one pitch and that's low ball two, two and one.
- 14:0522 innings this season, he's given up 24 hits.
- 14:09Has struck out seven, has had control trouble, walking 14.
- 14:14No score, bottom of the first just underway in game number two before a standing room only house.
- 14:20Ground ball off the glove of Zahn, fielded by Sparing.
- 14:23Quick throwing onto Thornton and Pete is out at first base.
- 14:28If you score our games, let us score that one one, six to three.
- 14:31It hit off Zahn's glove, Sparing near a second.
- 14:34The shortstop came up with it and got the outplay at first base.
- 14:42Here's Davy Concepcion who had a nine game hitting streak stopped in the first game going 0 for 3.
- 14:48In fact, the Reds were limited to only four hits in game number one, but Johnny Bench had the big one.
- 14:54Seventh inning homer with Joe Morgan on.
- 14:57David a 2-9-2 batter, pitch ball one.
- 15:13Zahn with the wind up and David is out in front, ball two, two and nothing.
- 15:19Well, we've got a final in on the Los Angeles Philadelphia game and the Phillies have beat them.
- 15:25The Eagles have scored a win over the Dodgers at Philadelphia this afternoon,
- 15:28so we got a one full game lead over the men of Walter Alston.
- 15:34Here's a 2-0 pitch to Concepcion.
- 15:36It's in for a strike just below the letters two and one.
- 15:41Final score, 4-2 Philadelphia.
- 15:43Lomborg the winner, Sutton the loser.
- 15:45They had 41,334 at Veterans Stadium.
- 15:502-1 pitch, swung out on a bouncing ball to Sparing at shortstop.
- 15:541-0 on the first, two down.
- 16:01That'll bring up Joe Morgan.
- 16:05Totals in that Philadelphia win, four runs, five hits, two errors for the Phillies, two, six and three for LA.
- 16:14Morgan batting 333.
- 16:16He had that all-important leadoff walk off of Rushell in the seventh inning and then Bench's home run followed.
- 16:23Joe with seven homers and 32 RBIs.
- 16:28Jetson has gotten Rose and Concepcion on ground balls and here's a pitch to Joe, ball one.
- 16:34Defensively for the Cubs, Thornton Trio, Staring and Madlock, Madlock their infield.
- 16:39Summers, Mundy and Morales left center and right with Middlewall behind the play.
- 16:45Bluff-Sebunt takes ball two, an interesting and to all three batters in the first inning.
- 16:53Zahn has fallen behind 2-0.
- 16:56Behind now to Morgan with Bench on deck.
- 17:03Left-hander stares for the sign and delivers.
- 17:06Call, strike, 2-1.
- 17:13That Philadelphia victory has capped off a very, very dismal road trip for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 17:19It may well be their worst in a couple of years.
- 17:23They will be limping back to LA to begin a home stand that will encompass ten games.
- 17:29Ground ball right side and through a base hit.
- 17:31The diving Andy Thornton could not come up with it.
- 17:37So Joe Morgan with a two-out single to right, it brings up Johnny Bench and he should get quite some hands.
- 17:46Thirteen home runs, 45 RBI's.
- 17:49He leads the National League in the home run figure and the major leagues in the RBI total.
- 17:58Bounding 2-81.
- 18:05Morgan with both feet on the carpet at first to pitch to Bench, backs him off the plate.
- 18:11You win some, you lose some, what can I tell you?
- 18:23Zahn bending at the waist to get the sign.
- 18:27Lances it, Morgan throws the first, Joe breaks towards second, throw that way, hit him and he is in safely at second base.
- 18:35Well he had the gigantic lead and Zahn threw the first.
- 18:39Morgan immediately broke to second base and the throw from Thornton to the shortstop sparing covering hit Joe in the back.
- 18:49That'll be scored, a stolen base for Morgan is 25th of the year.
- 18:53A pause for station identification of the Reds baseball network.
- 18:57The home of the $5,000 button, WLW Cincinnati.
- 19:01Lots of pregame fun awaits Cincinnati Reds fans on Farmers Night at Riverfront Stadium.
- 19:07The Reds meet the Padres Saturday, June 28th on Farmers Night.
- 19:12Joe Morgan in scoring position at second base with two down, the one out of Bench,
- 19:17slow hit ground ball left side, Madlock cuts it for a sparing, running throw, got him and the side retires.
- 19:23No runs, one hit, one man is left and through one complaint it's the Reds nothing and the Cubs nothing.
- 19:32Josephine, I'm home.
- 19:34Well it's about time Napoleon.
- 19:36Say what are you hiding under your coat, Prussia?
- 19:37Uh-uh.
- 19:38Constantinople?
- 19:39No.
- 19:40A loaf of French bread maybe, what is it?
- 19:41A new toaster.
- 19:42A new toaster.
- 19:43We don't need a new toaster.
- 19:44Listen Josephine, I got it free for opening a savings account at the bank across the boulevard
- 19:49and all I had to do was deposit $5,000.
- 19:52You call $5,000 for a toaster free Napoleon?
- 19:56Sometimes I think you're short on brains too.
- 19:58You've got to look hard for the right bank, one with the services we need,
- 20:02with plenty of security, nice people and a good solid reputation.
- 20:06And you want to chuck all that for a new toaster?
- 20:09It seemed like a good idea at the time.
- 20:11Yeah, so did Waterloo.
- 20:13At First National Bank of Cincinnati, we don't give away toasters or frying pans or premiums of any kind
- 20:19because our business is banking.
- 20:21Pure and simple.
- 20:23We can help First National Bank.
- 20:27We can help Cincinnati.
- 20:35No score as we go to the top of the second inning in our second game.
- 20:39It'll be Andy Thornton, the Chicago first baseman to start things off against Clay Kirby.
- 20:44So after getting the first two men out of the opening inning,
- 20:46reach for a single to center by Billy Madlock, but retired Monday in a fly ball to right field.
- 20:53Game still in progress in New York.
- 20:55The Atlanta Braves leading the New York Mets 6-1 through 5-1-1.5 innings of play.
- 20:59Atlanta coming up with five big ones in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth.
- 21:04They drove Tommy Hall out with a five-run fifth.
- 21:09Rod Gilbert had a home run his first of the year in the fifth inning with nobody on for Atlanta.
- 21:16Texas scoreless in the top of the first and game two at Cleveland after the Indians won the first game 3-2
- 21:22behind rookie Eric Reich.
- 21:25Pitch on the way to the plate and it swung on and pop foul.
- 21:28No play for Bill Plummer.
- 21:44Kirby with the strike one delivery. That is up high a fastball, one and one.
- 22:00On deck for Chicago, right fielder Jerry Morales.
- 22:04Kirby throws and Thornton takes a strike two, one ball and two strikes.
- 22:18Reds outfield straight away for Andy Thornton who is batting 3-38.
- 22:24Kirby shaking off Bill Plummer's side, looking again, shakes it off again, now nods ahead yes.
- 22:30And the pitch high and tight, two balls and two strikes.
- 22:36In the night, doing it Montreal, the Padres hold a 5-2 lead with Joe McIntosh on the mound
- 22:42and in the fifth the Cardinals have a 2-1 edge on Houston.
- 22:49Swung on and hit very high into left center field, Concepcion back,
- 22:54Foster coming in and Davey makes the catch for the first out.
- 23:02Jerry Morales will be at the plate and as we mentioned earlier Morales has not seen any action at all in this series.
- 23:08Prior to this plate appearance now he hit by a pitch on Thursday against the San Francisco Giants
- 23:16and as a result was not a starter in any of the first three games here.
- 23:23Morales batting 2-78.
- 23:28Pitch joined from Kirby below the knees, ball one.
- 23:37Morales this season has one home run and 22 runs batted in.
- 23:41Swung on, fly ball center field, hit pretty well, Foster still backing, reaches up and makes the catch.
- 23:50Too hot for Manny Trillo.
- 24:04Trillo carries a 2-53 batting average into our second game, he's playing both ends.
- 24:11Heath Thornton, Monday, swing and a miss. In the American League in the eighth, Minnesota and Boston are tied to run a piece.
- 24:21Baltimore leads Kansas City in the eighth inning, one-nothing.
- 24:24The Yankees a 2-0 lead over Chicago in the eighth.
- 24:30Strike two called, Minnesota at California about to get underway.
- 24:35Jim Colburn for the Brewers against Ed Figueroa and not yet underway.
- 24:40Detroit at Oakland, Coleman against Holtzman.
- 24:43Two out here in the second, no score.
- 24:45Strike two pitch, check swing on a pitch inside.
- 24:57Nitterwall, the Chicago catcher on deck.
- 25:01Kirby throws and that just misses the outside edge.
- 25:04The count is even at 2-2.
- 25:08In case you just joined us, the Reds took the first game 2-1.
- 25:11Now trying to sweep the Cubs in this four-game set.
- 25:15Line drive, left center field, Johnny Betts there, he makes the catch and the side retire.
- 25:21Three out, three down for Chicago, their fate in the second and that's it.
- 25:37The Kings external catcher.
- 26:07From one beer lover to another, the Stroh Brewery Company, Detroit, Michigan.

- 26:56Tony Perez opening our second takes the ball from Jeff Zahn, the left-hander.
- 27:01Tony batting 215, swings and hits a line shot over the glove of Sparing.
- 27:06A base hit left center.
- 27:08Quickly up, bobbling the ball as left fielder champ Summers, but Tony settles for a lead-off
- 27:13base hit.
- 27:16Perez marking his return to the Reds lineup for the first time in 13 days.
- 27:22The starting lineup in the first game and comes through with his first hit on this twin
- 27:27bill.
- 27:28George Foster coming plateward.
- 27:31Reds have now found the mark twice against Zahn for base hits.
- 27:40Foster hitting 281, nine homers, 17 RBIs.
- 27:51Zahn looking, checking Perez, pitching.
- 27:544-1.
- 27:56Zahn angled behind the plate in our second game with Harry Wendelstad at first, Dutch
- 28:02Renard at second base, and Doug Harvey at third.
- 28:081-0 delivery to Foster.
- 28:09Hit down the left field line, but curving foul.
- 28:15Ball and a strike to George Foster with Tony Perez at first, nobody out.
- 28:19He played baseball in the second inning.
- 28:27Inside, 2-1.
- 28:34Well, the Giants beating the Pirates in the first game of the double-edder at Pittsburgh
- 28:45today means that the Cubs don't lose any more ground, they still remain a game back.
- 28:50Three balls, one strike to George Foster.
- 28:53The Cubs are now 28-24, Pittsburgh 27-21.
- 28:59The New York Mets, if they can pick up a win, actually the Mets can move to within a half
- 29:06game of the top spot today.
- 29:093-1 on the way to Foster and a check swing foul to the screen.
- 29:16While in our division, we're 33-22, the Dodgers are 33-24.
- 29:23They've lost two more games than we have now, and they're a full game back.
- 29:303-2 pitch, Perez goes.
- 29:33It's swung on and foul off Foster's left foot, rolling along the third baseline where it's
- 29:40picked up by Coach Alex Gramis.
- 29:51Don appears to be quite happy being with the Chicago Cubs.
- 29:54He simply got lost in the shuffle in LA.
- 29:59Used sporadically by Walter Olson, a sometime starter, a sometime reliever, and getting
- 30:06a chance to get fairly regular work with Jim Marshall's club.
- 30:11Let's see if Perez goes here.
- 30:143-2 the count and Jef Zahn will throw that way before delivering to the plate.
- 30:27Now the 3-2 pitch, Perez goes, swung on, foul back again.
- 30:39Tony checking things out with Alex Gramis as he returns to first base.
- 30:43Not field, straight away for Foster.
- 30:48In field, a double play down.
- 30:503-2 pitch, Perez on the move.
- 30:53That's ball four outside.
- 30:54So we've got two men on with nobody out and Merv Rettman coming up.
- 31:03Say his last two times to the plate.
- 31:05Eighth inning double off the wall and left last night and a single in the first game
- 31:10today after coming on to the eighth inning to play right field.
- 31:13He's hit the ball very, very hard.
- 31:18Merv batting 216, no home runs and five runs batted in.
- 31:24Playing right field in our second game and has a chance to get us on the board against
- 31:28Zahn and the Cubs.
- 31:29He hits a very high fly ball.
- 31:30He just missed that pitch.
- 31:33Shallow left field, Summers under and makes the catch.
- 31:36What a way.
- 31:40Here's Bill Plummer.
- 31:48Plummer batting 063 has been to the plate a total of seven 16 times with one hit and
- 31:55one run batted in.
- 31:56Playing in his 11th game of the season.
- 32:04Perez leading at second base.
- 32:06Foster off the bag at first.
- 32:10No score in the home second inning.
- 32:13Pitch, ball one.
- 32:18Marneit, the Pittsburgh Pirates coming in for the first time.
- 32:31A couple of left handers throwing in that game.
- 32:34Freddie Norman against Jerry Royce.
- 32:35A match with last Wednesday night at three rivers and sure you remember that game, the
- 32:40Pirates won a two to one.
- 32:43He's not getting a hit until the seventh off Royce, here's a foul ball out of play.
- 32:48One and one to count.
- 32:52They will be going in the series opener tomorrow night beginning at 8 0 5 and on Tuesday night
- 32:56Pat Darcy will get the call against Sutton Sam McDowell.
- 33:00Don Gullitt opening up the Cardinal Series here on Wednesday night.
- 33:08Jeff Zide to Bill Plummer, a ball in one strike.
- 33:14Pitch, grounded foul outside of third and on into the Chicago dugout, strike two.
- 33:31Perez opening the inning with a base hit.
- 33:33Foster getting a walk, Rettman with a fly ball to left.
- 33:41Zide throwing and Plummer checks his swing on a pitch down and away, two and two.
- 33:57Zide with a long look and now steps off the pitching rubber.
- 34:06Plummer steps away from the play.
- 34:12Now batter and pitcher ready to go again.
- 34:15Count even at two balls, two strikes with one man out.
- 34:20Plummer checks it, fast ball high and a full count.
- 34:24We point it out Zide has had some control trouble having walked 14 batters in 24 innings
- 34:33prior to today's start and has already issued a walk here in the second to Foster.
- 34:39Plate curvy is on deck, here comes a three two pitch.
- 34:42Runners stay, it's one out of a base hit center field.
- 34:45Here comes Perez rounding third, heading toward the plate.
- 34:48Mundy back to the infield to throw to second and with Perez in the Rams take a one nothing
- 34:53lead.
- 34:54Base hit center field by Bill Plummer scoring Tony Perez, Foster to second holding there.
- 35:05A one nothing reds lead and now plate curvy will probably be up there trying to get both
- 35:09in the scoring position for the next batter, up he rode.
- 35:21Second RBI of the year for Bill Plummer, the reds get on the board first.
- 35:29Madlock looking for the bun at third base.
- 35:31Zahn has been touched for a hit, a walk and a hit with one man down.
- 35:39Curvy squares, bunch through it, strike one.
- 35:44Milwaukee, California underway at the big A in Anaheim, no score after a half inning.
- 35:59Thornton also in at first base.
- 36:01Zahn readies himself, curvy bunched foul and it's oh and two.
- 36:13No balls, two strikes, a run home.
- 36:18Curvy not having any success at all on Zahn's first two pitches and getting the runners
- 36:21advanced.
- 36:22Now Madlock backing up a bit at third base.
- 36:28Now starts in as is Thornton and that ball has popped up in the air, but it is fielded
- 36:32by the third pitcher.
- 36:34He sees Foster not going anywhere.
- 36:37He had pretty much given Foster third base when he fielded that bun on a hop, but seeing
- 36:42that Foster had not come to third, he simply threw on to Madlock to get the force play.
- 36:47George of course having to hold up to see whether or not that ball might be caught in
- 36:53the, in the air.
- 36:54Well George might have been sort of blocked from the ball.
- 36:57Marty the angle that Zahn was between the ball and Foster in the fight possibly, George
- 37:05really can see the ball bounce is the only thing I can think of because the first thing
- 37:09he wanted to do is go back to second when Zahn had the ball.
- 37:15So two men out as Foster is forced to third base one to five.
- 37:20Here's Pete Rose with a smash back up the middle in the first inning deflected by Zahn
- 37:24and Pete was thrown out by the shortstop staring.
- 37:30The pitch to Rose is high and inside as he spins around and out of there.
- 37:38Rose walking around at the plate talking to Bob Engel and Steve, George Midderwald.
- 37:42Rose of course hit by a pitch in the first game by Rick Rushell in the bottom of the
- 37:49first inning.
- 37:52Two men on, two men out, a run in.
- 37:58Two balls, no strikes.
- 38:05Zahn to the rising bag.
- 38:16Now sites a sign from Midderwald and his two nothing pitch is swung on and hammered foul
- 38:25off to the right and out of play.
- 38:31For this home stand we'll be in Chicago Friday, Saturday and Sunday for single games against
- 38:37the Cubs.
- 38:382.30 on Friday afternoon, a 2.15 starts Saturday, 2.15 starts Sunday.
- 38:44We'll then be back in for three against Atlanta.
- 38:49Go on the road for a six date Houston and Atlanta.
- 38:54Ground ball left side, the shortstop delivers onto the second baseman for the four south
- 38:58of Enzi in it.
- 38:59But the Reds get one run on two hits.
- 39:01We leave two men on base and at the end of two the Reds won the Cubs nothing.
- 39:17Watching the Reds win at Riverfront Stadium has always been a great way to spend the day
- 39:22and one sure way to add to that enjoyment is going to fishes before or after the game.
- 39:28It's all part of the tradition.

- 39:58Visit your nearest frishes drive in restaurant.
- 40:12Play Kirby and the Reds leading one nothing as we move to the top of the third inning.
- 40:16George Mittelwald the Chicago catcher and number eight batter to start it off and here
- 40:20where the action is Joe.
- 40:21All right Marty, Mittelwald with a 290 batting average, a couple of home runs and 10 RBI.
- 40:29Reds scoring a run in the second inning.
- 40:31Tony Perez single, a walk to Foster and a single by Bill Plummer, the center to score
- 40:39Perez from the second base with the one run in the game.
- 40:44Play Kirby making his eighth start of the year.
- 40:53Reds winning the first one two to one.
- 40:58Fine pitches battle with Gary Nolan and Rick Rushell.
- 41:05All right Mittelwald steps in to lead off the third for Chicago.
- 41:09Mittelwald, Zahn and Sperring do up here in the inning.
- 41:15Mittelwald swings in the first pitch and pops it foul.
- 41:18Rose chasing it, Plummer chasing it over to the Cubs dugout and that drops in the seats
- 41:23behind the Cubs dugout.
- 41:260-1.
- 41:29Reds and the Pirates tomorrow night, 8.05 game time.
- 41:45Kirby the 0-1 to Mittelwald, that's the breaking ball that's just high, 1-1.
- 41:56Dodgers losing to the Phillies 4-2.
- 41:591-1 delivery, that's up high, another breaking ball and the count goes to 2 balls to strike.
- 42:07Jeff Zahn on deck.
- 42:14He has the sign from Bill Plummer and the 2-1 on the way, high and inside, 3-1 the count.
- 42:23Mittelwald looks to Irv Norrin, the Chicago third base coach, gets the sign.
- 42:30Kirby checking in with Plummer and the 3-1 on the way.
- 42:34That's ball four, up high and first walk issued by Clay Kirby, Mittelwald leading off here
- 42:41in the third.
- 42:42Picture Jeff Zahn to the plate.
- 42:46Zahn has been up five times this year without a base hit.
- 43:00Mittelwald leads at first, throws in shallow at third to stretch, pitch, Zahn squares to
- 43:09Bunt and fouls it straight back and into the seat, all in one.
- 43:25Standing room on a crowd this afternoon and hoping for a sweep of the double header for
- 43:32the Reds.
- 43:33The 0-1 Zahn again squares to Bunt, does first base side, Perez up, he'll throw to Morgan
- 43:40covering at first base and moving on to second, George Mittelwald.
- 43:45Play going 3-4 on Zahn, credit Zahn with a sacrifice, one away and Rob Spurring steps
- 43:54in.
- 43:55Spurring let off the game with a bullet that Pete Rose took off to his left at third base.
- 44:02Spurring a 185 batting average, set one RBI.
- 44:14Kirby sets, delivers and Spurring takes under the knees a ball.
- 44:28Thomas Summers waiting on deck with one out, one 0 delivery, strike called, fast ball gets
- 44:37the inside corner, one and one.
- 44:48Hatfield straight away to Spurring, Kirby ready and the 1-1 on the way, swung on and missed,
- 44:55slider away.
- 44:58Kirby a ball, two strikes with Rob Spurring.
- 45:14Mittelwald with a good lead at second, the 1-2, that's just high, a breaking ball and
- 45:20Kirby wanted that, pound evens at two balls, two strikes.
- 45:29Well in a week from Thursday the Reds will be playing their top farm club, the Indianapolis
- 45:41Indians at Indianapolis.
- 45:44Here's the 2-2, Spurring swings and fouls, a breaking ball, pound holding at two balls,
- 45:54two strikes.
- 45:55Morgan and Mittelwald talking down at second base, I think David had ideas of maybe just
- 46:11flipping in behind George with his attention to Morgan.
- 46:152-2 to count, Kirby to the belt and delivers and Spurring swings, shot at deep rows.
- 46:23So I guess Rob better start trying somebody else out, that's twice his lined hard to
- 46:29rows at third base.
- 46:31Two away now and Champ Summers steps in.
- 46:35Summers with a fly ball to Foster in center field in the first inning.
- 46:48Summers will up-tanded batter, a 2-31 batting average.
- 46:54A little bit of a stretch, delivers to Summers, that's a strike at the knees on the inside
- 47:06corner.
- 47:07Summers has had two RBIs, a double, a triple.
- 47:14Mittelwald at second with two away, Reds leading one to nothing.
- 47:20Rebound to the plate, Summers swings and fouls straight back, a play quickly on front of
- 47:26Summers, no balls, two strikes.
- 47:33Well you have to say a slow worker.
- 47:43Looks into Plum, shakes off a side, shakes another off.
- 47:51Still looking and now Summers backs away from the plate.
- 48:03Kirby shakes one, two sides off, now asks for time and wants Plummer to come to the mound.
- 48:16Plummer looks up at the scoreboard and sees the count of 0-2 so, well we don't know.
- 48:23Plummer talking with Kirby still at the mound, now Bob Engel heads out and the meeting breaks
- 48:31up.
- 48:34Clay has no balls, two strikes with Summers and Mittelwald at second base.
- 48:43Alright, Clay checking in with Plummer, now the stretch.
- 48:53The 0-2 delivery, hats flung on and hit into center field, George Foster coming in a couple
- 48:58of steps, he has it and that's it.
- 49:01In the hitting for the Cubs, no runs, no hits, no arrows.
- 49:04One runner left on base and at the middle of the third the Reds won, the Cubs nothing.
- 49:12Harold Lee has been skiing up on Mano Jeska for about five years now.
- 49:16Some of the time it's for fun, but a lot of the time it's just to be there in case somebody
- 49:21needs some help.
- 49:22Harold's good at snow rescue work, which is what it takes to be a national ski patrolman
- 49:27around Anchorage, Alaska.
- 49:28Harold's got what it takes because he's not only a fine skier, but also because he's taking
- 49:34his time to learn emergency first aid too, something the skiers up on Mano Jeska are
- 49:39mighty glad he did.
- 49:40Harold Lee doesn't have to spend so much of his free time up on a mountain, but he wants
- 49:45to because he believes in people.
- 49:48Harold Lee's also a full-time employee of Marathon Oil Company, production division,
- 49:53Anchorage, Alaska.
- 49:54Marathonists people just like you, just like me, who believe in people.
- 50:08Marathon Oil Company, people believe in people.
- 50:20The Reds coming to bat in the third inning, before they do, we'll pause for station identification.
- 50:25This is the Cincinnati Reds baseball network.
- 50:29The home of the $5,000 button, WLW Cincinnati.
- 50:34Purchase your Cincinnati Reds tickets downtown at 580 Walnut and at the stadium, at Burkharts
- 50:39in Kenwood, Crye County, Beechmont, Hyde Park, and Northgate, and at home federal savings
- 50:43in Western Hills.
- 50:44Dave Concepcion deleted off in the third for the Reds.
- 50:47Dave had his nine-game hitting streak stopped in the first game, going 0 for 3.
- 50:54Jeff Zahn, ready to go to work to Concepcion in his first pitch, is down low a ball.
- 51:03David in the first inning, grounded to sparing at shortstop.
- 51:07A 290 batting average for Concepcion.
- 51:12Zahn works.
- 51:13David takes a strike.
- 51:15Ball 101.
- 51:17Concepcion, Morgan, and Bench do up here in the third.
- 51:27Zahn in the wind and delivers, and Concepcion swings and pops it up foul down the right
- 51:33field line.
- 51:34Andy Thornton chasing it, makes a nice play.
- 51:36He's back to the infield and on the run, makes the catch.
- 51:45Fine defensive play by Chicago first baseman Andy Thornton for the first out and the third,
- 51:52and Joe Morgan steps in.
- 51:56Joe singled in the first inning and was actually picked off at first base, but did not break
- 52:02stride, went on to second.
- 52:04And Thornton's throw hitting Joe in the back, and they credit Morgan with a stolen base,
- 52:10his 25th of the year.
- 52:14Zahn works and Morgan takes it inside a ball.
- 52:28Fine ball, no strikes to Joe Morgan.
- 52:33Morgan delivers up high and it's 2-0.
- 52:38Reds have had three hits off Zahn, and he's walked one, walking Foster in the second inning
- 52:45when the Reds got their one run.
- 52:52Zahn's 2-0 delivery and Morgan takes this one also inside.
- 52:56Three balls, no strikes.
- 53:01Second event, John Dine.
- 53:06Zahn has the sign, the 3-0.
- 53:12Morgan takes a strike to the knees in the inside corner.
- 53:16Three and one.
- 53:20Signed 3-1 delivery.
- 53:25Morgan looks at that one inside, ball four.
- 53:28Second walk issued by Jeff Zahn.
- 53:30So Morgan's at first base, on for the second time in the game, and Johnny Bench steps in.
- 53:36John hit a little check swing bouncer that Bill Madlack charged and threw him out on
- 53:42for the third out in the first inning.
- 53:45Now Andy Thornton is over to the mound to talk with Zahn.
- 53:49Now that first game, a 2-1 victory for the Reds, the 23rd one run game the Reds have
- 53:56displayed this year and we were talking to some of the Cub players during batting practice
- 54:02today and we told them that and they couldn't believe it.
- 54:07First pitch to Bench is high and outside a ball so.
- 54:17Morgan with a good lead at first base.
- 54:19He has both feet on the carpet.
- 54:21Zahn, the stretch and throws over there and Morgan steps back.
- 54:25A ball, no strikes to Bench.
- 54:27John with his 13th home run of the year in the first game to win it for the Reds.
- 54:34Now has 45 RBI and a 2-80 batting average.
- 54:39He swings and misses a high fast ball, 1-1.
- 54:49Reds leading 1-0 here in the second game.
- 54:52A ball, a strike to count to Bench is on the stretch, the stretch throws over the first
- 54:57and Morgan is back standing.
- 55:03Tony Perez kneels on deck.
- 55:07Now this game is far from the pace of the first game.
- 55:13Again, a throw to first base and Morgan steps back.
- 55:18Second game played in two hours and one minute.
- 55:22But this one is not quite the same pace.
- 55:29Again a throw to first base and again Morgan is back.
- 55:32Zahn paying a lot of attention, another throw there, almost picked Andy Thornton off that
- 55:37time.
- 55:40So Jeff paying a lot of attention to Morgan.
- 55:46Here's the pitch up high to Bench, 2-1.
- 56:02Into the belt, the 2-1 delivery, swung on and missed, not even 2-2.
- 56:19Zahn looking in the middle wall, has his sign, the stretch, and up.
- 56:33Joe again with a big lead, sign the stretch and the pitch, Morgan does not go and the
- 56:40pitch is swung on and filed to the screen by Bench.
- 56:49Well, how about number 14?
- 56:58Little excitement around the orchard.
- 57:00Bench swings and misses, Morgan goes but they don't get him and Joe is in with a stolen
- 57:05base and for Morgan that is number 25.
- 57:13They got number 26.
- 57:1426 stolen bases now for Morgan and 31 attempts.
- 57:20Bench striking out, or Zahn his first strikeout, stepping in is Tony Perez.
- 57:30Tony singled in the second inning leading off and scored on the base hit by Bill Plummer.
- 57:41Zahn ready, delivers to Perez inside with a slider.
- 57:48Tony in the first game of the doubleheader was 0-3, 7 home runs and 31 RBIs for Perez.
- 57:57Zahn outfield playing Tony straight away.
- 58:01Zahn delivers and Perez takes a strike this time on the outside corner to the knees, 1-1.
- 58:12Dodgers losing, the Reds now a full game up on Los Angeles and a chance to make it a game
- 58:20and a half for the win here in the second of the doubleheader.
- 58:241-1 on the way, Perez swings, hits it into the right center field, that'll call you in
- 58:28for a base hit, here comes Morgan, he'll score and it's a 2-0 ball game and Perez is 2 for
- 58:342.
- 58:35Tony Perez winding one into right center field for Tony his 32nd RBI of the year.
- 58:44Hit number 4 off Jeff Zahn.
- 58:52Morgan scoring from second base and of course, Joe with a big steal of second on the strike
- 58:58out of Johnny Vance and we're going to have activity in the tub bullpen.
- 59:04Eddie Watt heads on to throw, George Foster swings in the first pitch, pops it up, Bill
- 59:12Matlock in the tub bullpen has room and makes the play.
- 59:17The Reds are out but we pick up a run on a base hit.
- 59:20After the no errors, one runner left on base and at the end of 3, the Reds 2, the Cubs
- 59:25nothing.

- 59:38Right.
- 59:39No service charge, no charge for check, right?
- 59:40Right.
- 59:41And to get free checking, you had to come up with a big chunk of money for your minimum
- 59:44balance, right?
- 59:45Right.
- 59:46Now think carefully, can you use your minimum balance?
- 59:48You're not supposed to.
- 59:49Right.
- 59:50What happens if you do?
- 59:51I have to pay a service charge.

- 59:57Well, it's time.
- 59:58Time's up.
- 59:59Ah.
- 1:00:00Ah.
- 1:00:01Ah.
- 1:00:02Ah.
- 1:00:03Ah.
- 1:00:04Ah.
- 1:00:05Ah.
- 1:00:06Ah.
- 1:00:07Ah.
- 1:00:08Ah.
- 1:00:09Ah.
- 1:00:10Ah.
- 1:00:11Ah.
- 1:00:12Ah.
- 1:00:13Ah.
- 1:00:14Ah.
- 1:00:15Ah.
- 1:00:16Ah.
- 1:00:17Ah.
- 1:00:18Ah.
- 1:00:19Ah.
- 1:00:20Ah.
- 1:00:21Ah.
- 1:00:22I know you're having trouble getting Matlock out on this series.
- 1:00:23He's had a hit his first time up today, and he'll be leading it off, as Joe said
- 1:00:24here in the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:00:26In the American League today, Jim Palmer pitched a one-hitter against the Kansas City
- 1:00:30Royals as the Orioles prevail.
- 1:00:321-0 in that game, Baltimore getting only four hits off of Steve Busty.
- 1:00:36Palmer his ninth win, Busty seven and five on the year.
- 1:00:41Matlock, Rick Bundy, and Andy Thornton is how their lineup.
- 1:00:45Ending number four against Clay Kirby who has given up only the first inning single by Madlock has walked the batter no strikeouts
- 1:00:54Play throws and Madlock takes outside ball one
- 1:01:07Right hander checking he delivers that swung on bounced over the head of Rose and a lot feel for a base set
- 1:01:13So Bill Madlock continues to wheel the hot bat for the Cubs. That's his second hit today
- 1:01:19Second hit of the game for Chicago
- 1:01:23Be more precise at fifth hit
- 1:01:25Today for Mr. Madlock what were the three in the first game?
- 1:01:29Here's Rick Mundy and a fly ball that drove Rettman back just a couple of steps shy of the warning track in the first inning
- 1:01:39Rick batting 292
- 1:01:41Kirby ready with the pitch and it swung out and missed well he just played good old-fashioned hardball with that one
- 1:01:51Reds in field a double play depth and the sunglasses start to come out and full force now
- 1:01:57They head for that treacherous time of the day when the Sun starts to set
- 1:02:01Oh one delivery swung on and popped up outside a third heading toward the seat Rose joined by Davey, but no play
- 1:02:13Coming into today's game games the Reds were 97,487 ahead of last year's record-breaking attendance base
- 1:02:21After the first 23 home dates this season
- 1:02:25604,202 prior to today for an average of 26,270 and we have standing room only for the doubleheader this afternoon
- 1:02:39Two strikes to count the pitch foul ball out of play
- 1:02:43Two-nothing Cincinnati out in front a run of the second on a base hit by Bill Plummer scoring Tony and then Perez driving in the second run of the last inning
- 1:02:53Getting Morgan in from second base
- 1:02:57Madlock at first nobody out in the fourth swung on grounder foul between the bag and the coaching box at first
- 1:03:03Counts day is 2-7
- 1:03:05Madlock at first nobody out in the fourth swung on grounder foul between the bag and the coaching box at first
- 1:03:11Counts day is two strikes
- 1:03:19Andy Thornton on deck Rick Mundy at the plate Billy Madlock on at first
- 1:03:23Kirby getting his act together mentally on the mound checking in with Plummer pitching popped up shallow left field
- 1:03:35Consensi on backing on it calling and he makes the cut one away
- 1:03:41That will bring up Andy Thornton who popped out to Davey as a lead off batter in the second inning
- 1:03:47The Reds radio network brings Reds baseball to fans in six states

- 1:04:11Thornton batting 333
- 1:04:15Checking his swing and it cost him strike one
- 1:04:19Kirby starting this game in some fast company with the way the Reds starting pitching has been the last week
- 1:04:35Not a good job so far. The big overhand breaking ball does not break. Stays up head high to
- 1:04:42Andy Thornton. The ball one strike.
- 1:04:44Like the Cubs that scored a run in each of the first three games here and have had a
- 1:04:53total in three games of only 18 hits. Five Friday, five Saturday, eight first game today.
- 1:05:01High and inside. Ball two and Thornton looks quickly out toward the mound. That was a fast
- 1:05:07ball in on him. Now he walks away from the plate. Kirby has fallen behind to the Chicago
- 1:05:17first baseman. Two balls, one strike. Gave up a base hit to Madlock to start the inning.
- 1:05:22Monday has popped out to David. Cincinnati outfield just shaded a bit around toward left.
- 1:05:33Thornton waiting. He takes outside. It's three balls and one strike.
- 1:05:47Kirby throws and that is strike two on the inside corner. So the Cubs down by two here
- 1:06:03in the fourth inning. Let's see what Madlock's going to be doing. A 3-2 count on Andy Thornton.
- 1:06:08Nobody out or rather one out in the inning. Kirby staring intently in as Madlock gets
- 1:06:21a short lead. Now inches away just a bit further from the back at first base. Here comes the
- 1:06:283-2 pitch. He's going. It is swung on and fouled out of the middle Bill Plummer. Down
- 1:06:40the count stays. Three balls, two strikes. In the National League through seven, the
- 1:06:46Cardinals lead the Astros four to one. Reggie Smith's had a homer in that game with a man
- 1:06:51aboard. Interesting to note that with the Cardinals picking up Willie Davis, he has
- 1:06:55been playing right field lately with Reggie Smith on it first to give the Cardinals some
- 1:06:59additional offensive punch. Davis with a couple of hits last night. We'll be seeing them on
- 1:07:04Wednesday. Now Kirby after getting the sign from Plummer came set, stepped off the rubber
- 1:07:10and Madlock quickly back into the bag. 3-2 pitch. It's on the way and Madlock stays this
- 1:07:21time. It's ball four inside. So Thornton gets a second walk that Kirby has given up. The
- 1:07:26Cubs have him at first and second base for the right fielder Jerry Morales. Only time
- 1:07:41up in the second at a fly ball to Foster in center field. Now let's have a hard one hopper
- 1:07:52to Concepcion. Two men on, one man out. Here's a fly ball hammered back into deep left center
- 1:07:59field. Back is to a bench on the warning track. He leaps up and cannot catch it and it hits
- 1:08:03off the fence. Foster quickly up with the ball. Here's a run home as Madlock scores the first
- 1:08:10cup run. A double to left field by Jerry Morales. And it's two to one Cincinnati as Thornton
- 1:08:16goes to third. That ball missed getting out of here by about three feet. Bench made a
- 1:08:21leaping attempt at the fence in left center field and Foster credited him with making a
- 1:08:25fine play. He came over from center, took that ball off the fence and got to throw quickly
- 1:08:31back into the infield. But the Cubs have scored their run down. They've got two in scoring
- 1:08:37position and Pedro Borbon will begin to loosen up in the Cincinnati bullpen. Really looked
- 1:08:48like that ball was going to get out of here when it left the bat. But Kirby rolling along
- 1:08:59pretty well in the first three innings as run into problems here in the fourth. He's
- 1:09:05going to be facing Manny Trio. Runners at second and third. The pitch to him has swung
- 1:09:11on and shot foul. Trio trying to go the other way with that pitch away from him. Borbon
- 1:09:22loosening up and we're going to get further activity in the cup bullpen as Eddie Watts
- 1:09:26starts to throw. Getting down toward the tail end of the Chicago order. One ball, one strike
- 1:09:33to Trio. Kirby's next pitch is fouled just off the end of the bat. Strike two, one and
- 1:09:53two. Decepcion in from shortstop to have a quick word with Kirby. Borbon leading at third
- 1:10:11base and second, Jerry Morales who has just doubled across the first Chicago run. Kirby
- 1:10:19throws, pitch swung on, a looper into left center field. That is going to fall for a
- 1:10:24hit. In to tie it up and here comes Foster's throw to the plate as Andy Thornton with Morales
- 1:10:31going to third. A ball hit off the end of the bat by Trio. Run scoring single and the
- 1:10:37Cubs have tied it up at 2-2. Third Chicago hit in the inning. Now George Midderwald,
- 1:10:57the number eight batter who drew a walk leading off the last inning against Kirby. Kirby delivers,
- 1:11:16swing on a base hit left field. In from third, Jerry Morales in Chicago leads at 3-2. Now
- 1:11:27Clay Kirby has gone completely bananas here in the fourth inning. Chicago base hits ringing
- 1:11:34out and they have scored three times. Still only one man has been retired. And now Sparky
- 1:11:40Anderson is on his way to the mound and that may well be all for Clay Kirby this game.
- 1:11:45The call has gone down for right hander Pedro Borbon and I'll tell you Kirby went downhill
- 1:11:52right now. So Borbon making his way out of the red bullpen. We've got a break in the
- 1:12:03action here in the Chicago fourth inning and we'll step out for this message. Hello Gene
- 1:12:09Lehman, Riverside Ford. The Ford business at Riverside Ford has just been tremendous and

- 1:12:46many colors, all types of equipment, air conditioned cars, V8, automatics, power steering, you
- 1:12:52name it we have it. 100 of these cars are on sale. You can double the warranty. Get

- 1:13:02a tremendous deal you want to come to Riverside Ford. We're a block and a bridge from downtown
- 1:13:07Cincinnati. We'll see you tomorrow.
- 1:13:10Well we've talked so many times about the fine science of pitching and what creates
- 1:13:19a situation whereby a guy all of a sudden loses it and conversely all of a sudden finds
- 1:13:25it in a given game. Today it was on a negative side for Clay Kirby. He went through the first
- 1:13:30three innings giving the Cubs only one hit. All of a sudden here in the fourth inning
- 1:13:34the roof caved in on him. A single by Madlock, a one out walk to Thornton, a double off the
- 1:13:39wall and left field by Morales got a run home, a single by Trio made it 2-2 and a base hit
- 1:13:44by Midderwall made it 3-2 Chicago. And now we're looking at right hander Pedro Borbon.
- 1:13:50Making his 22nd appearance of the year, Pete has won two, lost one with a 3-9-7 earned run
- 1:13:55average. And as he comes out of our bullpen right hander Raleigh Eastwick begins to throw
- 1:14:01down there. Jeff Zahn at the plate. Rose looking for the butt and here it is third base side
- 1:14:09Borbon is up. He throws on to first. Morgan covering to get the out as the runners move
- 1:14:14along. Scoring 2-4 on the Jeff Zahn sacrifice and we go back to the top of the order for
- 1:14:24a short stab Rob Spurring. He's lined to third twice in this game. Three runs in. Runners
- 1:14:43at second and third two out. Fly ball right field hit well. Redmond digging toward the
- 1:14:48line and it's going to be a foul ball. Now the young Chicago shortstop hit that ball
- 1:14:58well the other way but just foul. The paid attendance today 50,311 bringing the total
- 1:15:09season, the total attendance for this series to 135,681. The largest series attendance
- 1:15:16in Reds history in April, May or June. That ain't bad. PD with the 0-1 delivery. Line
- 1:15:27drive right field Redmond will make a diving catch. What a fine defensive play by Merv
- 1:15:36Redmond as he went sprawling on the astroturf. Made the catch and hung on to save two runs
- 1:15:43and they gave him a standing ovation because it was quite some play by the Reds right fielder.
- 1:15:51The Cubs get three runs on four hits. They leave two men on base and in the middle of
- 1:15:56the fourth Chicago three and Cincinnati two. The folks at the Stowe Brewery want to remind
- 1:16:08you that it's Stowe Party time and they also want to give you a free recipe on how to Stowe
- 1:16:13a party. So here goes. First get yourself some good music like this. Next add some good
- 1:16:23friends and neighbors. Spread around some good snacks like potato chips, pretzels, things
- 1:16:30your friends like or be different and surprise them with something new and good. Then top
- 1:16:36everything off with plenty of good cold Stowe's beer. That's the important part. Blend it
- 1:16:41all together and you've got yourself one great party. Keep this in mind the next time you're
- 1:16:46out shopping and look for the Stowe Party display featuring our state code 12-9 wherever
- 1:16:52you buy beer and we'll see you at the party.
- 1:17:06Banner day is coming up Sunday June 29th. The Reds meet the Patres in a big double letter
- 1:17:11and the fourth annual parade of banners will take place between games. Everybody is encouraged
- 1:17:16to enter the competition and join the fun. Rules are simple. Banners must be carried
- 1:17:20by not more than two persons. They must have a baseball theme and must be in good taste.
- 1:17:25A $250 cash prize goes to the winning banner. There will be additional cash prizes for runners
- 1:17:31up. For more details call or write the Reds office. Start making your plans and get to
- 1:17:36work on your banner soon. Well as is the case more often than not the man who made the big
- 1:17:42defensive play is first up in the inning. Merv Bretman with a fly ball to right field. Morales
- 1:17:46will catch that ball. Well that was not quite the catch that Bretman made on Spurring's
- 1:17:52line drive but still a pretty good play. Bretman retired on a line drive to right field. Here's
- 1:18:00Bill Plummer. Cubs are leading 3-2 for Jeff Zahn in the home fourth inning here in Cincinnati.
- 1:18:10Plummer had her RBI base hit to center field in the second inning. Now the Cubs up by a
- 1:18:20run. They were leading by a run 1-0 up until the seventh inning of the first game. There's
- 1:18:24ball one inside. Bench's home run turned it around. Gave Gary Nolan his fifth straight
- 1:18:31victory. 1-0 pitch. Kyle Pop off the end of the bat. No play for Andy Thornton. Here's
- 1:18:41a pitching line on Clay Kirby. Three and a third innings. He gives up five hits. Three
- 1:18:45runs all earned. Walks two hitters. Raleigh Eastwood still throwing in our bullpen. Four
- 1:18:59bone is on deck. The 1-1 pitch. Check swing ground ball to first base. Thornton has it.
- 1:19:06He'll get the out himself. Two down. We'll pause for station identification on the Cincinnati
- 1:19:11Reds baseball network. The home of the $5,000 button WLW Cincinnati. You'll find some great
- 1:19:18Father's Day gift ideas in every price range when you visit the Cincinnati Reds 580 gift
- 1:19:22shop corner of 6th and Monat downtown Cincinnati. Four bone with two down and nobody on will
- 1:19:31come on and hit for himself. Pitch low and into in ball one from Jeff Sein. Pedro's been
- 1:19:38up seven times. Has had a hit. Sein trying to retire to side in order for the first time
- 1:19:45in this game. There's a strike at the knees to the flumping butter for bone one and one.
- 1:19:56Three runs five hits the Cubs. Two runs four hits the Reds. Ball two is high. Reds got
- 1:20:08a run in the second. Another in the third. The Cubs sending eight batters to the plate.
- 1:20:13Scoring three times off Kirby in the fourth inning. Ground ball on a big hop to the first
- 1:20:20the second baseman. Now the pitcher covers and gets there in time. Heads up play by Jeff
- 1:20:25Sein. He got off that mound very quickly because Andy Thornton gave indication he was going
- 1:20:30to play the ball saw that he couldn't. It was taken instead by trio and on the throw
- 1:20:34to Sein for a bone is retired. Three up three down and through four complete at Chicago
- 1:20:39three and our Reds two. What has two large beef patties cheese lettuce and our own special
- 1:20:57sauce and is served with french fries and creamy coleslaw. You're right the big boy
- 1:21:02platter and you'll find it only at.
- 1:21:18The.
- 1:21:40Pedro Borbón getting ready to work his first inning in this game and he'll be facing champ
- 1:21:54Summers the Chicago left fielder and number two batter.
- 1:21:57Summers the only man who did not bat in that three run Chicago fourth inning and they lead
- 1:22:02by a run three to two.
- 1:22:040 for 2 in the game with two fly balls to center field.
- 1:22:10Talking about the attendance for this series in this game the season's paid attendance
- 1:22:16total now is 654,513 for Cincinnati well ahead of last year's base.
- 1:22:24Pass ball delivered inside.
- 1:22:301-0 pitch swung on and bounced to second.
- 1:22:32Morgan has it.
- 1:22:33He throws to Tony 1-0.
- 1:22:40Bill Matlock working on a perfect second game two times up two hits and a run score.
- 1:22:46Jumped his batting average all the way up to 340 and that is right there among the league
- 1:22:52leaders if not in fact leading the pack.
- 1:23:00Kirby gone after only three and one third innings today.
- 1:23:06Matlock takes it well inside from Borbón.
- 1:23:19Red Bull pen not getting a great deal of work lately.
- 1:23:25Swung on and that's grounded to Joe.
- 1:23:28Throw to first two out.
- 1:23:33Back to back ground ball to second off the bats of champ Summers and Billy Matlock.
- 1:23:39Rick Mundy the two out hitter in the fifth inning.
- 1:23:42Fly to right and popped to short.
- 1:23:49Dodgers losing four to two today at Philadelphia.
- 1:23:52Reds winning the first game a game up on them and hopefully can come back here in the second
- 1:23:57game and move a game and a half out in front.
- 1:24:02Swang and a miss.
- 1:24:03Borbón simply threw that into the middle of Bill Plummer before Mundy had a good cut
- 1:24:07at it.
- 1:24:16One ball and one strike.
- 1:24:19I would imagine that ball might be just a bit tough to pick up at this stage of the
- 1:24:27game.
- 1:24:28Here's a fly ball hammered to left center.
- 1:24:29Foster going to his right and he makes the catch to end the inning.
- 1:24:34Three up and three down.
- 1:24:36We go to the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:24:38The Cubs three and the Cincinnati Reds two.
- 1:24:42What does feeling free mean to you playing tennis.
- 1:25:05You've gone through my career friend Fonzo
- 1:25:21fuck waiting for me.
- 1:25:30heart across the nation.
- 1:25:33Give your friends a generation.
- 1:25:37Here's the day, here's the state, feeling free.
- 1:25:47We'll be sending the top of the order up here in the home
- 1:25:49fifth inning.
- 1:25:50Pete Rose is 0 for 2 in the game against the throwing
- 1:25:53of left-handed Jeff Zahn.
- 1:25:54We'll start it off.
- 1:25:57Zahn has given us but four hits, and that was the total
- 1:25:59complete in the first game.
- 1:26:02Cubs out hitting us 8 to 4 and still winning on Vetch's
- 1:26:05home run 2 to 1.
- 1:26:07Pete has been thrown out 1, 6 to 3 on a hot smash up the
- 1:26:11middle deflected by Zahn in the first inning and then hit
- 1:26:13into an ending force play on Kirby in the second.
- 1:26:21Rose batting at even 290 as he steps in.
- 1:26:25Here's the pitch to him, and it's taken on the inside of the
- 1:26:27letters for a strike.
- 1:26:39Swung on and hit into left field of ace set for Pete.
- 1:26:48Rose hitting that one off the end of the bat.
- 1:26:50Fifth Cincinnati hit and now David Concepcion up with a
- 1:26:55potential tie and run on his first base.
- 1:26:57Davey 0 for 2.
- 1:27:00Then thrown out 6, 3, sparing to Thornton and popped out to
- 1:27:03Thornton and fouled ground in the third inning.
- 1:27:05Eddie White will resume his activity in the
- 1:27:08Chicago full pass.
- 1:27:11David with a nine-game hitting streak stopped in the first
- 1:27:14game and now looking for his first hit in the double header.
- 1:27:19The pitch going, pass ball missing.
- 1:27:28Atlanta and New York into extra innings at Chase Stadium tied
- 1:27:31up at 6 apiece.
- 1:27:34Single game there today.
- 1:27:39Swung on, pops out, heading back behind the Reds dugout
- 1:27:43and in.
- 1:27:46Mad scramble for that ball.
- 1:27:52A ball and a strike.
- 1:27:58Joe Morgan now moving on deck.
- 1:28:00We've got Rose at first.
- 1:28:033 to 2 Chicago, fifth inning.
- 1:28:11John again goes to taking a great deal of time.
- 1:28:13We have an easy inning of it in the fourth.
- 1:28:17He throws on to first and feet steps back ahead of the throw.
- 1:28:24How about field straight away?
- 1:28:28Davey waiting on the 1-1, takes it too low a ball.
- 1:28:35Decepcion has driven in 27 runs.
- 1:28:37He has three homers and has had five game-winning hits.
- 1:28:41That's second only to Joe Morgan's seven.
- 1:28:47Rose has five, Perez four.
- 1:28:48Betts, his home run of the first game,
- 1:28:50gave him two game-winning hits this season.
- 1:28:56High and inside, three and one.
- 1:28:59Now should Zahn lose Decepcion, a lot of good things
- 1:29:02could happen.
- 1:29:03Morgan, Betts, Perez coming up.
- 1:29:05Why the cup bullpen has been going,
- 1:29:07I'd like to dip into that one again.
- 1:29:15Swing and a miss.
- 1:29:18It's all a full count.
- 1:29:23Eddie Watt working, getting ready.
- 1:29:26Jim Marshall seems fit to go that way.
- 1:29:29Zahn trying to protect the one-run lead,
- 1:29:31checking Rose leading at first.
- 1:29:32He goes, the pitch is now swung on,
- 1:29:34hits a deep right center field.
- 1:29:36Monday going back, back to the plate,
- 1:29:37looking up, it's off the wall.
- 1:29:39Here comes Rose.
- 1:29:40He gets the green light.
- 1:29:41Crio takes the throw, and no throw to the plate.
- 1:29:44It's a tie game on a David Double.
- 1:29:51He hit that one, and it's a tie game.
- 1:29:53It's a tie game.
- 1:29:54It's a tie game.
- 1:29:55It's a tie game.
- 1:29:56He hit that ball and hit it well off the fence
- 1:30:00and right center field.
- 1:30:02Rose was moving, and as a result,
- 1:30:04scores all the way from first base to tie the game.
- 1:30:15Davey delivers on his 28th RBI of the year,
- 1:30:18and now Joe Morgan will try to fracture this 3-3 tie.
- 1:30:21He has single-watched stolen two bases and scored a run.
- 1:30:33The pitch on the way, and it is butted foul.
- 1:30:38Morgan, with his two steals today,
- 1:30:42should lead the National League,
- 1:30:44dependent upon what Cedeno has been doing in Houston.
- 1:30:46Joe and Cedeno are in the lead.
- 1:30:49Houston, Joe and Cedeno were tied before today with 24 apiece.
- 1:30:54Morgan has had two.
- 1:31:01Sign checking Concepcion.
- 1:31:03The 0-1 pitch, butted foul off the third base line at strike two.
- 1:31:20A two-strike count on Morgan,
- 1:31:23as he has tried twice in vain to put a butt down.
- 1:31:26Nobody out with a run home to tie the game up.
- 1:31:30Single by Pete Rose, a double high off the wall,
- 1:31:34and right-center by Dave Concepcion.
- 1:31:36Zahn going to work again against Morgan.
- 1:31:39He comes set, he throws.
- 1:31:42Joe takes a fastball high.
- 1:31:50Here's a final score in the National League.
- 1:31:52Padres over the Expos, 5-2.
- 1:31:54Cardinals leading Houston 4-1 there in the night.
- 1:31:57Final score, 5-1, St. Louis winning it.
- 1:32:02Morgan bounces this one off of his foot, rolling into fair ground.
- 1:32:09Played on fire, Bob Engel quickly calls it a foul ball,
- 1:32:13takes a look at it, throws that one out of play, and gives on a new one.
- 1:32:36Count holding at one and two on Joe Morgan.
- 1:32:41Long look back to second base, the pitch swung out and foul straight back.
- 1:32:46Doug Flynn has now started to loosen up in the Cincinnati bullpen.
- 1:32:57Morgan stays away from the plate just a bit longer than usual, and now steps back in.
- 1:33:09Let's see if Jeff Zahn will make another mistake.
- 1:33:13Ball two.
- 1:33:21Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:33:27Donnie Bench on deck, Jeff Zahn on a world of trouble here in the fifth.
- 1:33:31Bradson tied it up, go ahead and run it second.
- 1:33:352-2 count on Morgan.
- 1:33:37Joe swings and pops it up.
- 1:33:40Danny Trio will play it at shallow right field.
- 1:33:43He has it one down.
- 1:33:49Johnny Bench will be in, but Jim Marshall is on his way to the mound.
- 1:33:55Well, do we get a look at the right-hander Eddie Wada?
- 1:33:58Will Zahn stay around and pitch to Bench?
- 1:34:00I would think not.
- 1:34:03It's been a long, long series for the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:34:09They came in after having taken the last two games in a three-game series with San Francisco.
- 1:34:15Proceeded to lose 5-1 Friday night.
- 1:34:19Gullet beat them 8-1 yesterday.
- 1:34:21Billingham got them in 2-1 in the first game today with Nolan doing a number on them.
- 1:34:26It's going to be all for Jeff Zahn.
- 1:34:29Jim Marshall will go to his right-hander, the veteran Eddie Wada.
- 1:34:36Zahn goes four in one third inning.
- 1:34:40Lasserey had six hits.
- 1:34:42All three runs in against him will go into the earned category.
- 1:34:46He struck out a hitter and walked two.
- 1:34:50This for Eddie Wada will be appearance number three in the four-game series.
- 1:35:02Looking at Eddie Wada's figures, and they are small indeed in terms of appearance.
- 1:35:08Is this his third in all three against Cincinnati after having had his contract purchased just four days ago from the Wichita Arrows,
- 1:35:16the Wichita clubs, AAA ball club, and the American Association.
- 1:35:21No wins, losses, a 27 ERA in one inning.
- 1:35:24He has given up a hit, three runs, and walked three batters.
- 1:35:27He had serious control trouble yesterday.
- 1:35:31Coming on to work the sixth inning, gave up a hit, walked three, and had all three of those six inning runs charged against him.
- 1:35:39Although there were others who also had similar control problems.
- 1:35:42Frailing, walked a hitter in the third of an inning. Bobby Locker walked a hitter and gave up two hits in an inning and one third.
- 1:35:51Three to three to score.
- 1:35:55Cincinnati getting out in front two to nothing with a run in the second, one in the third.
- 1:35:58It cuts tying in with three in the fourth, and we have come back to tie it up here in the fifth on a single by Rose and a double by Consencio.
- 1:36:06And Morgan has popped out, and Eddie Wada will be working to Johnny Bench.
- 1:36:11Updating some scores in the second game, and that San Francisco Pittsburgh doubleheader threw five.
- 1:36:16The Pirates lead it two to one. Richie Hefner has had still another home run.
- 1:36:20His second of the day with a man out of the fifth inning.
- 1:36:24Atlanta and New York are tied at six apiece through ten completed.
- 1:36:29San Diego and Montreal tied one-one at the end of two in their second game. Dave Price Levin against Steve Rogers.
- 1:36:36The Patriots won the first game five to two, and the Cardinals have beaten Houston five to one.
- 1:36:41Eddie Wada is ready to face Bench, who has bounced to third and struck out swinging.
- 1:36:46The pitch to him, taking a ball too low.
- 1:36:57They said, we'll send the Reds back out in front.
- 1:37:03That is a call strike, and it's one ball and one strike to Johnny Bench.
- 1:37:18One-one delivery, swung on a line, shot foul. Passed the bag at third and on down to the Chicago bullpen.
- 1:37:27Ten brailling, a left-hander begins to throw.
- 1:37:34Bench with his 13th homer of the year and the game-winning blow in the first game.
- 1:37:42Now has 45 runs batted in this season.
- 1:37:47His closest pursuer before the doubleheader started today, Dave Winfield of San Diego with 30, well, Luzinski with 39,
- 1:37:56and Winfield with 38, Garvey at 37.
- 1:38:02Wada in relief of Jep's eye, out in front of Bench and pitching, missing away, two and two.
- 1:38:22David, a good lead at second, does, missing with that pitch.
- 1:38:28Bench started to go, held up, full count.
- 1:38:42Lock toes to rubber, puts into his catcher middle wall.
- 1:38:47Three-two pitch, swung on and full foul, down the left field line and out of play.
- 1:39:01By the way, Bench has been swinging the bat in the last few games.
- 1:39:04It's a safe bet to say that the shoulder problems that plagued him so long,
- 1:39:10an early season collision at the plate with San Francisco's Gary Matthews are behind him now.
- 1:39:19Seems to be swinging free and the result would be evidence to that statement.
- 1:39:26Here's a ground ball, basic up.
- 1:39:29They're getting it the other way and David is in to send the Reds up by a run.
- 1:39:35Now they play that over-shift of sorts against Bench, who normally is a dead-full hitter
- 1:39:41and he simply puts that ball to the right side of the Chicago infield.
- 1:39:44He's got his 46th run down the end of the year and gives the Reds a 4-3 lead.
- 1:39:47The pitch, instead of trying to pull it, he continues that while he'll press a few people up.
- 1:39:54Tony Perez is 2 for 2. Ball to it.
- 1:40:08That's RBI is the 8 for Johnny Bench in this series. Tony fouls it away.
- 1:40:16One ball, one strike, two runs across. The Reds back up by a run.
- 1:40:30Eddie Watt working with Tony Perez.
- 1:40:33The 1-1 pitch, swung on and fouled off the bat handle and out of play.
- 1:40:47Watt will rub up the new baseball as Perez waits patiently off the plate.
- 1:40:53Tony's up his average to 225 with singles in the second and third. That third inning base hit produced a run for us.
- 1:41:04Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:41:09The Reds have now had seven hits in the game and Jeff Zines totals a complete four in a third inning.
- 1:41:14Six hits, four runs, four earned runs, two walks and a strikeout.
- 1:41:18There goes Bench. Picked his bounce, five-third and a foul ball.
- 1:41:24Well, that was a near miss for Tony Perez.
- 1:41:28Johnny Bench got the green light to take off. He cuts back across the infield.
- 1:41:33Tony gets ready to wait on the 2-2 pitch from Eddie Watt.
- 1:41:47Watt again goes to taking a lot of time.
- 1:41:59Here he goes again. Bench stays this time and that strike free call is Watt got it over away from Tony and Perez knew it.
- 1:42:08Second out of the inning and George Foster coming to the plate.
- 1:42:13Yatsie has walked and popped out the third.
- 1:42:22Eddie Watt windmilling his right arm on the mound as Foster steps in.
- 1:42:29Reds four, Cubs three, still hitting in what has been so far a two-run fifth inning.
- 1:42:37Call, strike one.
- 1:42:46Both starting pitchers out inside of five full innings.
- 1:42:52Kirby went out in three and a third. There's a call, strike two.
- 1:42:57Jeff Zahn's day ends after four and one-third innings.
- 1:43:09A lot of being made to have to wait on the mound by Foster.
- 1:43:18A strike two count. Pitch outside and low. One and two.
- 1:43:32A right-hander is joined. The left-hander frailing down in the club, Cubs bullpen.
- 1:43:42Here's a one and two pitch. That's too low. Oscar Zamora is the right-hander throwing.
- 1:43:57Now Eddie Watt checking in with a plate umpire. Bob Engel to pick up the correct box on George Foster.
- 1:44:11Johnny Bench leading at first base. And the pitch on the way.
- 1:44:17That gets by the catcher-mitter wall and Bench will go in at second.
- 1:44:21Wild pitch has been charged to Eddie Watt.
- 1:44:28Oh, if Yahtzee can produce a hit in this situation, we will have a run cushion with which to work.
- 1:44:34Two balls, two strikes, two outs, two in. Bench at second as a result of the wild pitch.
- 1:44:55Cub pitcher into the motion, delivers strike three call on the inside corner and Foster is caught looking.
- 1:45:02In the inning for Cincinnati, statistically two runs on three hits.
- 1:45:06The man lacked down and after five, the Reds four, the Cubs three.
- 1:45:11Back in Detroit, there's something very interesting going on. What we're talking about is brewing love.
- 1:45:17And where it's happening is at the Stroh Brewery.
- 1:45:20Now you can see it all happening by taking a specially designed tour of the brewing operations, laboratories, and packaging facilities.
- 1:45:27The tour takes about one hour and is free of charge.
- 1:45:30The Stroh Brewery is located at the intersection of the Chrysler Freeway and Granton Avenue, only a few minutes from the heart of Detroit.
- 1:45:38Tours may be taken Monday through Friday, beginning at 11 in the morning and running every hour on the hour until three that afternoon.
- 1:45:45Please keep in mind that groups visiting the brewery be limited to a maximum of 15 persons.
- 1:45:50For additional information, you may contact the Stroh Brewery at the following number, area code 313-961-5840.
- 1:45:59So why don't you make plans right now to visit the Stroh Brewery and spend a little time with some loved ones.
- 1:46:04From one beer lover to another, the Stroh's Brewery Company, Detroit, Michigan, 48226.
- 1:46:09Family brewers for 200 years.
- 1:46:12Well, Pedro Bourbon stands to get a win in this game if he can continue his work against the Chicago Cubs.
- 1:46:22He came on in the fourth inning and got the last two batters out after the Cubs had put three on the board against Kirby and then got them out in order in the fifth.
- 1:46:32Doug Flynn has come in to play second base, replacing Joe Morgan, the only change for the Cincinnati Reds.
- 1:46:40And the batter will be Andy Thornton to open up inning number six.
- 1:46:44Thornton has popped the short draw on a walk and scored one of the Cubs three.
- 1:46:53Four bone throws and it swung on and fouled right back over the screen and down into the crowd.
- 1:47:02Don't forget, tomorrow night, the Reds still home.
- 1:47:04In fact, four more games in this home stand.
- 1:47:06The Pirates tomorrow night at 8.05.
- 1:47:09One and one to Thornton. Freddie Norman and Jerry Royce will hook up.
- 1:47:15They'll be back Tuesday night and then Wednesday and Thursday the Cardinals will make their first visit to Riverfront Stadium.
- 1:47:22Here's a fly ball hit back in a deep left center field.
- 1:47:25Looking up and that ball is off the wall.
- 1:47:28Here's Foster quickly throwing into the infield and nobody covering the bag.
- 1:47:33Both Flynn and Concepcion had gone out toward the outfield and a two-base hit for Andy Thornton to start the sixth inning.
- 1:47:40I think Andy had that one, uh, chalked up the HR pool.
- 1:47:45Well, he had gone into that home run trot as he left home play and then realized the ball did not get out.
- 1:47:53But still a two-base hit for Thornton, the tie-and-run and scoring position for Jerry Morales.
- 1:48:04Morales got the Cubs scoring underway in the fourth inning after a single by Madlock and a walk to Thornton.
- 1:48:10He doubled off the fence in left center.
- 1:48:13Raleigh Eastwick will begin to loosen up again.
- 1:48:17Reds four, Cubs three.
- 1:48:19Big pitch in the dirt. Flummer digs it out.
- 1:48:24Ball one.
- 1:48:30Now Flummer goes out of the mound and will pause for station identification on the Cincinnati Reds baseball network.
- 1:48:36The home of the $5,000 button WLW Cincinnati.
- 1:48:41Tickets for all Cincinnati Reds home dates are on sale before, during, and after every Reds game at Riverfront Stadium.
- 1:48:47On your next visit, pick up tickets at the advance ticket window.
- 1:48:51Bourbon dealing the 1-0 to Morales. He tries to bun and fouls it at the plate.
- 1:49:00One ball and one strike. Runner and second is Andy Thornton, a double to start the inning.
- 1:49:05Sixth Chicago hit in the game and the first off of Bourbon.
- 1:49:11Kirby the starter with three and one third innings, gave up all the Chicago runs on five hits.
- 1:49:21Two balls and one strike.
- 1:49:32Bourbon a quick worker. High pop in field. Pete Rose calling. He goes near the mound to play the ball.
- 1:49:42One away.
- 1:49:49Manny Trio at the plate is one for two, a base hit to score a run in the fourth.
- 1:49:56Talk so much about the starting pitching lately, how good it's been, but really when Sparky has had to go to his bullpen,
- 1:50:04more often than not in this recent surge for the Reds that have seen him win 15 out of 18, the Relievers have done a job also.
- 1:50:11He brings a heavy fastball to the plate that Manny Trio swings and misses on.
- 1:50:25One ball and a strike and a pitch below the knees.
- 1:50:37Thornton now at second base as Flynn and Concepcion play the Captain Mouse game with him, a swing and a foul at the plate.
- 1:50:44Trio behind to Bourbon one and two.
- 1:50:47A large delegation of rosy Reds here today. It's Rosy Reds Appreciation Day.
- 1:51:01Just missing outside, two and two.
- 1:51:10Matthew Marshall is going to get his bullpen ready again. Two balls, two strikes, one out, one on.
- 1:51:17Another foul, this one off the face mask of the catcher Plummer.
- 1:51:25Oscar Zamora gets working again.
- 1:51:38Trio waiting. Bourbon throws. Here's a smash right side. Perez diving, comes up with a ball.
- 1:51:48That was a soft line drive, hit midway between first and second base.
- 1:51:53And Perez with a diving catch of it to retire Manny Trio. Unfortunately for Thornton, he had not strayed too far off the bag at second.
- 1:52:02So two away in the inning. Bourbon a third of the way home toward leaving Thornton at second base after Andy had opened the inning with a double of left center field.
- 1:52:15Middle wall is walked and single a run in. It was his hit that brought about the ouster of Kirby. Strike one swinging.
- 1:52:36TV check-in, throwing. Strike two on a swing and a miss. Both good fastballs.
- 1:52:46Bourbon a strike away from ending the sixth.
- 1:52:57High and outside. Well the Minnesota Twins have, at least today, stopped the Boston Red Sox Express, 7-5 that final.
- 1:53:06The Yankees beat Chicago 4-1, so New York only two games back in the American League East.
- 1:53:15Strike him out swinging, ball dropped by Plummer. He picks it up, throws on down to Perez to complete the strikeout and retire the side.
- 1:53:23No runs, one hit, no arrows, one lap. We're in the middle of the sixth inning. It's the Reds four and the Cubs three.
- 1:53:32You know, if you're like most people, you think all banks are pretty much alike. So when it came time for you to choose a bank, you probably didn't look too hard.
- 1:53:42Maybe you went to the bank nearest you for convenience. Or maybe you opened an account at a financial institution that gives away all sorts of free gifts.
- 1:53:51Or perhaps you were attracted by what's come to be known as free checking. But choosing the right bank is serious business.
- 1:53:59Because when you open an account at a bank, you're actually buying that bank. Well you put your money in it, don't you?
- 1:54:05So when it comes time for you to buy a banking service, we at First National would like to suggest you shop around.
- 1:54:12Compare services, security, people, reputation. Chances are you'll choose the First National Bank of Cincinnati.
- 1:54:20But the important thing is, you'll know you made the right choice.
- 1:54:24First National Bank of Cincinnati.
- 1:54:36Some exciting baseball is in store for Cincinnati Reds fans at Riverfront Stadium in the next few weeks.
- 1:54:41The Pirates and the Cardinals are in town this week. The Braves visit for three games the following week.
- 1:54:46And in late June it's the Padres and the Astros. Stop by the Reds ticket agency nearest you.
- 1:54:52In Columbus at all Central Ticket Office locations. In Dayton at Rikes Downtown.
- 1:54:56In Salem Mall. In Indianapolis at Ross and Babcock. In Lexington at Graves Cox.
- 1:55:01And in Louisville at S&M Sporting Goods.
- 1:55:06Bottom three batters in the Reds order. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Merv Rettman will start it off.
- 1:55:12Fly to left and Rhonda Bavay sit on a running catch by Morales in the fourth inning of Merv's Line Drive.
- 1:55:19Reds are up by the scanned margin of one. Four to three as Eddie Watt throws and Rettman takes ball one.
- 1:55:33Joe Flummer, Pedro Bourbon to follow. Both bullpens at least for the moment quiet.
- 1:55:41Rettman popping it up outside of first base. A play maybe for Andy Thornton.
- 1:55:46Over near the dugout and runs out of room. He ran into that fence in front of the Reds dugout about bell time.
- 1:55:54Completely bent over and now being helped into an upright position as the Chicago trainer comes out to take a look along with our trainer Larry Starr.
- 1:56:05I can't imagine that, well I don't know, I would think maybe just the wind was knocked out of him but he appears to be limping.
- 1:56:11Marty I think Andy hit his knee against the railing and his post through along the railing there and quite possibly Andy banged his knee against that post.
- 1:56:25But apparently he's going to be alright just the shock of it. But fence doesn't move too much.
- 1:56:34Making sure Andy Thornton is well enough to remain in the game. Jim Marshall has come out and he'll now head on back to the dugout and Thornton will stay in.
- 1:56:40A one and one to count on Merv Rettman.
- 1:56:51The Reds have had seven hits in this game. The Cubs have had six. Both clubs have played Errolis baseball. One-one delivery. Two low, ball two.
- 1:57:06The Braves and the Mets are now in the twelfth inning. Still tied at six apiece.
- 1:57:15Swung on, pop foul. Back behind the plate. Middle wall coming back and he'll not have a play.
- 1:57:31Pittsburgh out in front of San Francisco two to one. They're in the seventh. The Pirates try to gain a split of that double header.
- 1:57:39And in another twin bill at Montreal, the Expos lead the Padres three to one in the fourth. Montreal lost the first game five to two.
- 1:57:49Full count.
- 1:58:05Watch three-two pitch. Grounded right side and through for a base hit.
- 1:58:11Ball just passed him out and out of the reach of Manny Trillo on into center field. Rettman's first hit in the game.
- 1:58:22Bill Plummer has had a base hit to knock in a run. Our first back in the second and then bounced out to Andy Thornton at first base in the fourth inning.
- 1:58:35Be nice to add a couple of runs. Lead two to nothing. Trillo three to two and then went out in front four to three. That's our score in the sixth inning.
- 1:58:50The Cubs bullpen has been up and down in this game. Zamora back to start throwing. Call strike away from him.
- 1:59:02Zamora has been a lot of work without being in a ball game. It's the absolute truth. He's gotten enough work already this season.
- 1:59:12One guy certainly can't complain about not getting any work. And has done a good job for Chicago.
- 1:59:24Checking the pitch. Rettman goes. Pitch is swung on. Popped up. Loot in the shallow left. A hit for Plummer.
- 1:59:29Here comes Rettman. He'll try to go to third. The throw that way is not in time. It gets by the third baseman.
- 1:59:36And then picked up by the pitcher, but that'll allow Plummer to go to second base.
- 1:59:43It'll be a base hit for Plummer. An error on the left fielder, Champ Summers. That allows Plummer the extra base.
- 1:59:51That throw took Madlock off the bag. He had to go to foul ground to try and grab it. It got by him and hit the wall in front of the Chicago dugout.
- 2:00:01Rolled along it. Finally picked up by Eddie Watt, but by that time Plummer was standing on second base.
- 2:00:11And it looks like we're going to get a pinch hitter with runners at second and third and nobody out.
- 2:00:15Terry Crowley has selected a bat and he's in the on deck circle to bat for Bourbon.
- 2:00:30He's going to hit the ball to third and he's in the old base.
- 2:00:37Well, I just got in a report here in the radio booth that Joe Morgan left the game because of a bruised shoulder.
- 2:00:46That was the reason that Doug Flynn came on to play in the upper half of the inning.
- 2:00:52Terry Crowley has picked up fouls.
- 2:00:55Marty Joe leaving the game was on the pickoff by Jeff Saund and Andy Thornton's throw hit Joe on the left shoulder.
- 2:01:04And that's where the problem popped up.
- 2:01:08Chicago infield is in. Runners at second and third, none out.
- 2:01:11And Crowley, who has been our most productive pinch hitter this season, is in against Eddie Watt.
- 2:01:17A ball to it.
- 2:01:20Terry batting 4-12 in all-in-pinch hit situations. It's had seven hits and 17 times up.
- 2:01:26Three doubles a run batted in.
- 2:01:28He's batting for Pedro Bourbon.
- 2:01:31Reds with a big opportunity in the sixth inning.
- 2:01:34Swung on and foul. One and one.
- 2:01:42Pedro Bourbon goes two and two-thirds innings. He gives the Cubs one hit.
- 2:01:47And he chalks up a strikeout.
- 2:01:55Redmond at third. Plummer at second. None out. One-one to count on Crowley.
- 2:02:03Here's the pitch.
- 2:02:05Low and inside. A left-handed hitter at Crowley. Two and one.
- 2:02:20Watt back to the plate. That's ball three outside.
- 2:02:26Now you've got Pete Rose on deck. And unless Watt can get a pinch over, he's going to be coming up.
- 2:02:31Pete is in a bases-loaded situation.
- 2:02:40The 3-1. Swung on, hit into left field. It is a base hit.
- 2:02:46One run will score. Here's Plummer coming on to third, sliding safely.
- 2:02:50And Crowley with a pitch single to lap makes it 5-3, aren't they?
- 2:03:02Terry Crowley, who has been called on many times early in the season, but not a great deal lately, comes through in the clutch here in the sixth.
- 2:03:12He gives way to pitch runner Ed Armbruster at first base.
- 2:03:16Jim Marshall coming to the mound, and that's probably going to be all for any Watt.
- 2:03:31Watt gave up a hit to Redmond, a single to Plummer on the hit-and-run ball that just dropped in over the outstretched glove of Don Kessinger.
- 2:03:40Some are through Wiley at third base, allowing Plum to go to second. And now Crowley, a single into left field, getting Redmond home with a fifth Cincinnati run.
- 2:03:50On will be right-hander Oscar Zamora.
- 2:03:54Well, this is kind of a strange... I haven't seen that in a long while. It's the way Hornsby used to take pictures of.
- 2:04:02Marshall hadn't gone to the mound yet, but Eddie Watt standing there and just probably looked down the bullpen and slapped his right arm.
- 2:04:11Zamora comes on. There's going to be two changes. Tim Hoseley, it looks like, is going to go in to catch, and the new pitcher is Zamora.
- 2:04:20But Marshall, he didn't say a word.
- 2:04:29So Oscar Zamora, he has seen other duty in this series. Yesterday, Watt won and then gave up one hit.
- 2:04:36This is second appearance in the series, and as Joe mentioned, Tim Hoseley becomes a new Chicago catcher,
- 2:04:44which means that Hoseley will be hitting in the number nine spot in the Chicago batting order, and pitcher Zamora will be hitting in the number eight position.
- 2:04:54Hoseley will be leading off the seventh inning.
- 2:04:58Five to three, Cincinnati run in here in the sixth inning. Still nobody out with runners at first and third. Zamora making appearance number 20.
- 2:05:08He has a three-and-one record with a two, five, seven earned run average and also six of the 13 saves that Chicago pitching has accumulated.
- 2:05:18In fact, he has six and Darrell Knowles has six, so they've been the tandem out of the Cubs bullpen this season.
- 2:05:25Raleigh Eastwood, still working in the Cincinnati bullpen, will be our pitcher in the top of the seventh.
- 2:05:32Bourbon, two and two-thirds innings, gives up a hit, strikes out a batter, and as we pointed out, he stands to be the winning pitcher in this game.
- 2:05:41Three straight hits. Rentonman, Plummer, and a pitch single by Terry Crowley to score run number five and give the Reds a two-run cushion.
- 2:05:51Pete Rose in the on-deck circle, waiting to hit. He's one for three in the game with a single leading off the fifth inning and scored a run.
- 2:06:07Zamora still taking his warm-ups while Tim Hoseley gets the catching gear on and the Cup dugout. He's coming on now.
- 2:06:19Pete has played on fire, Bob Engel. If we're ready to resume play again, Engel says let him throw a couple down to Hoseley and then we'll get back at it.
- 2:06:28The pitcher and catcher will talk things over. Ken Fraling still throwing for Chicago in their bullpen.
- 2:06:35Fifty thousand three hundred eleven today for a double header that may well turn out to be a Cincinnati sweep, but things continue to go right.
- 2:06:45Not only a sweep of the twin bill, but a sweep of the four-game series against the Chicago team that came in here on top of the heap in the Eastern Division, the National League.
- 2:06:56Okay, Pete is in. Here we go again. First and third not out. Rose takes ball one high from Zamora.
- 2:07:11Eastwick finishing up, comes out of the Cincinnati dugout. Cubs infield in and Rose looks at a strike, one and one.
- 2:07:24Cubs coming back to Cincinnati in August for night games, Monday and Tuesday night, the 11th and 12th.
- 2:07:32We'll mark those dates now. Two balls and a strike to Pete Rose.
- 2:07:49Up next will be Dave Concepcion, arm brister running for Crowley at first, Plummer at third.
- 2:07:57Five free reds, sixth inning. Rose swings and pops it foul and into the seats left side.
- 2:08:11Level of count, two balls, two strikes.
- 2:08:25Zamora looking into Hoseley.
- 2:08:32Rose, arm brister goes, pitch is grounded foul.
- 2:08:38Arm brister getting the go sign at first base. Rose with a foul ball and he comes back and the count remains two balls and two strikes.
- 2:08:58Zamora stretches, arm brister goes again, that is outside, ball three and arm brister in at second base without benefit of a throw.
- 2:09:08He has a stolen base. It's his second of the year.
- 2:09:19So that's the ill hit and we'll score a pair. Rose hits a high fly ball into center field. That's going to be deep enough to get Plummer in.
- 2:09:28He makes a catch, here's a tag, Plummer coming home, arm brister going to third in safely. Six to three.
- 2:09:50Two runs in in the inning and the batter will be Dave Concepcion who doubled the right center in the fifth to tie the game up off of Chicago starter Jeff Zahn.
- 2:10:01And with third base still occupied by Ed Armbrister now, the Cub infield stays in with one man out.
- 2:10:13That run charged to the departed Eddie Watt.
- 2:10:18David takes the curve ball high from the right-hander.
- 2:10:24Dougie Flynn is on deck. He'll be getting his first at bat in the game.
- 2:10:361-0 pitch, call strike.
- 2:10:53Samora glancing at third base. Swing and a miss by Concepcion and he's behind one and two.
- 2:11:04Three straight hits for one run and a sacrifice fly with another run home.
- 2:11:10He's scored two runs in each of the last two innings and still batting here in the sixth with a chance of getting another one.
- 2:11:18Strike three call. Concepcion can't believe it.
- 2:11:26He finally does and now leaves the plate as Doug Flynn comes up.
- 2:11:34Concepcion stood around so long at the plate I thought I'd miscalculated on the count.
- 2:11:39Looked like he was going to stay around for another pitch.
- 2:11:45I wanted to make sure maybe Mr. Engel would change his position.
- 2:11:54Here's a strike to Flynn. Doug getting 2-44 as one homer and five runs batted in.
- 2:12:05Strike two is there.
- 2:12:08Cub infield back now at normal depth with two men out.
- 2:12:12This young man has really been a very valuable addition to this club. He's played, played well.
- 2:12:19The times in which he has started games, which have been of course very few, he's come up with some big hits for us.
- 2:12:26One and two to count on him.
- 2:12:34Samora trying to get the final out of the inning.
- 2:12:39Arm brister at third. Flynn looks at a call, third strike and that's the inning.
- 2:12:44Four cents an ante, two runs, three hits, one arrow, one left.
- 2:12:48At the sixth hole it's a red six and the Cubs three.
- 2:12:57Spargy Anderson came out of the red dugout after Doug Flynn had been called out on strikes and spent a couple of minutes giving play down player Bob Engel a piece of his mind over I'm sure not only the calls to Flynn but also to Concepcion.
- 2:13:08That little conversation is now broken up.
- 2:13:12We've got a new pitcher on the mound as the Cubs come to bat in the seventh inning.
- 2:13:15Back to tell you about him and call the action again Joe Nutsol.
- 2:13:18Hi Marty, it's Raleigh Eastwick making his sixth appearance in four RBI's.
- 2:13:24Hoseley, Sparing and Summers do up for the Cubs in the seventh.
- 2:13:30Reds leading at six to three.
- 2:13:38Eastwick delivers the pass ball, misses inside.
- 2:13:43Pedro Borbon worked two and two-thirds innings allowing one hit and striking out one.
- 2:13:50Stands now, Pedro would be the winner.
- 2:13:53Strike in at the knees from Eastwick to Hoseley, one and one to count.
- 2:13:58Reds have out hit the Cubs ten to six.
- 2:14:04Eastwick delivers, Hoseley swings, ground ball by Rose in the left field, base hit.
- 2:14:09Ben Chappell the ball returns to the infield and that is hit number seven for Chicago, the first off Raleigh Eastwick.
- 2:14:21That brings Rob Sparing to the plate, boy I tell you this guy has to wonder what you have to do to get a base hit.
- 2:14:28He tried Rose twice with line drives, decided well, no luck there.
- 2:14:34They took a shot at Merv Rutman this last time up and Merv made an outstanding defensive play to retire.
- 2:14:41First pitch is high and inside, Sparing leans away, one and oh.
- 2:14:55Eastwick delivers, that's swung on and popped in his shell and going out is Flynn, dug back, pedaling, Hasrel makes the cut.
- 2:15:06Flynn at second base.
- 2:15:11Here's Champ Summers, 0 for 3, he's twice hit fly balls to center and is grounded to second.
- 2:15:20Joe Morgan taken out of the lineup in the sixth inning, Joe hit in the back in the left shoulder by a throw from Andy Thornton.
- 2:15:30And boy I tell you, if it hits you in the right spot there, it gets quite sore.
- 2:15:36Pitch to Champ Summers gets the inside or outside corner called strike.
- 2:15:46Blake Carroll on the Cincinnati bullpen throwing, the 0-1, just under the knees, count evens one and one.
- 2:15:56Now they're still at it in New York, Braves and the Mets tied 6-6, 13th inning.
- 2:16:051-1, Summers swings and chops it foul with the plate.
- 2:16:10Raleigh out in front, a ball, two strikes this summer.
- 2:16:14Tim Hoseley at first base was won away.
- 2:16:18Tony Perez plays a couple of steps behind Hoseley.
- 2:16:26Eastwick looking in to plumber the stretch.
- 2:16:30A 1-2 pitch, high and outside, count evens 2-2.
- 2:16:35The Reds jumped in front, 2-0, a run in the second, a run in the third.
- 2:16:40The Cubs came back with 3 in the fourth to take a one-run lead.
- 2:16:44The Reds right back with 2 in the fifth, 2 in the sixth, and they lead it 6-3.
- 2:16:49Now the 2-2 pitch, swung on and that's bounced foul off to the right.
- 2:16:57I'm holding it, two balls, two strikes.
- 2:17:08Now the Pirates trying to hang on to split the doubleheader with the Giants.
- 2:17:142-2 again, that swung on again, bounced foul.
- 2:17:18Pirates leading the Giants 2-1 in the ninth inning.
- 2:17:24Giants winning the first game 3-1.
- 2:17:33Two balls, two strikes to count.
- 2:17:36Bill Madlock on deck.
- 2:17:39He's had a hot bet.
- 2:17:41There's a swing, ground ball, Pirates has it.
- 2:17:43He goes to Concepcion one throw back the first, not in time.
- 2:17:47And they get the 4th of Hoseley at second base to play going 3-6.
- 2:17:54Two away now and stepping in is Bill Madlock.
- 2:17:59Madlock is 2-3 in the first game, he had three hits and four times in the plate,
- 2:18:06so he's had five hits so far in the doubleheader.
- 2:18:11His last time up we got him out though.
- 2:18:13He grounded to Morgan at second base in the fifth inning.
- 2:18:18The off field playing Madlock straight away.
- 2:18:22Eastwick sets and delivers.
- 2:18:24Madlock takes just low a ball.
- 2:18:27Right now the sun is shining through the upper deck and right on home plate.
- 2:18:35As John pointed out yesterday in the start of the game,
- 2:18:38here's the pitch, flung on and pulled foul off the third baseline.
- 2:18:43It's not even one-on-one that the backdrop out in the center field in the seats
- 2:18:50I guess caused more problems than maybe the shadows.
- 2:18:58One-on-one to count.
- 2:19:00Eastwick delivers and Madlock looks at it, it's low, two-on-one.
- 2:19:06Dreads with ten hits, the Cubs with seven.
- 2:19:10One error in the ball game and that belongs to Champ Summers.
- 2:19:15The Cubs, two-one delivery, low and outside.
- 2:19:20Free ball to strike now to Madlock.
- 2:19:26Waiting on deck is Rick Mundy.
- 2:19:32There are two outs.
- 2:19:36Eastwick's three-one pitch.
- 2:19:38Madlock swings and misses a high fast ball, full count.
- 2:19:46Summers at first base will be on the move with the pitch with the count falling two away.
- 2:19:54Well, there's some all-star ballots flying around.
- 2:19:56Here's the three-two, flung on and bounced to Perez at first.
- 2:20:00He weighs Eastwick away, goes to the back and retires.
- 2:20:04The Cubs here in the seventh, no runs.
- 2:20:06They're going to hit them.
- 2:20:08One runner left on base in the middle of the seventh, the Reds sixth, the Cubs three.
- 2:20:13People I see every day stop me on the street and say,
- 2:20:18You're looking good, girl.
- 2:20:21Who put the sunshine in your world?
- 2:20:24So I tell them about your laughter, life knows my value to be.
- 2:20:30And the feeling of contentment that I know.
- 2:20:35The way you make me feel I'm content, I'm a peaceful nut at home.
- 2:20:41While we're sharing loving parts over the great taste of straw.
- 2:20:47You make me know that I'm a looking good.
- 2:20:52You can't have a thing like the taste of straw's beans.
- 2:20:58Grewed with family pride for two hundred years.
- 2:21:03One thing I like to watch for that straw's being looking good.
- 2:21:08That was Kelly Garrett for the Stroker Recoverty, Detroit, Michigan.
- 2:21:12Family Brewers for two hundred years.
- 2:21:18Before the Reds come up to play in the bottom half of the inning,
- 2:21:23we'll pause for station identification.
- 2:21:25This is the Cincinnati Reds baseball network.
- 2:21:28The home of the $5,000 button, WLW Cincinnati.
- 2:21:32The Cincinnati Reds 580 Gifts Shop and News Stand is open before every Reds home game.
- 2:21:36Stop by on your next trip to the stadium.
- 2:21:38580 Gifts and News, 6th and Walnut, downtown.
- 2:21:42Johnny Bench deleted off for the Reds in the seventh.
- 2:21:45John is one for three in an RBI.
- 2:21:49John singled in the fifth inning when the Reds scored a couple of runs to go back in front.
- 2:21:57Moore's first pitch is blowing outside the ball.
- 2:22:06Oscar into the wind and the 1-0 delivery.
- 2:22:09Swung on, shot by the charge top into left center field over is Mundy.
- 2:22:13Gets by him and on his way to second his bench and he'll hold right there.
- 2:22:18And we'll wait and see.
- 2:22:20Mundy went a long way after the ball and we'll see if they give him a double.
- 2:22:25Apparently, we'll have to wait.
- 2:22:33And they're going to give Johnny Bench a double and for John that is his 17th double of the year.
- 2:22:39John's second hit of the game.
- 2:22:46Bench shot, second base leading off here in the seventh.
- 2:22:49Tony Perez at the plate.
- 2:22:51Tony is two for three in an RBI.
- 2:22:57Bench and Johnny Grob now tied for the league lead in doubles with 17.
- 2:23:04John leads the National League in home runs.
- 2:23:07RBI's tied for doubles.
- 2:23:16Bench at second lead, Zamora sets and delivers to Perez.
- 2:23:21That's swung on and that could be number eight.
- 2:23:24Going back and there she goes.
- 2:23:29Tony Perez re-wrapped that one and no doubt about it, Zamora very upset with himself,
- 2:23:36but a big one for Tony and we now lead it by a score of eight to three.
- 2:23:49Tony Perez is eight home run of the year and those two RBIs gave him three for the game and a total of 34.
- 2:24:01Tony really enjoyed that one.
- 2:24:04Second hit off Zamora and both runs of course charged to Oscar and he put a mark.
- 2:24:12All right, here's George Foster.
- 2:24:15George, 0 for 2 in a walk, swings and misses.
- 2:24:19Slider, 0 and 1.
- 2:24:25The Reds leading it now eight to three.
- 2:24:28Twelve hits for the Reds, Zamora works, Foster swings and pops it foul back at us.
- 2:24:36And if we hear a cheer we know it's a cod, if we don't there's a scramble.
- 2:24:42Apparently there's a scramble.
- 2:24:47Zamora out in front, 0 and 2 to George Foster.
- 2:24:57The 0-2 delivery, just missing low and offside, 1 and 2.
- 2:25:03Seisai Geronimo loosening up in the Reds bullpen and he'll undoubtedly go to center field.
- 2:25:13Foster takes low, count evens two balls, two strikes.
- 2:25:22Freddie Dorman and Jerry Royce to Mara Knight here at Riverfront, two-two pitch,
- 2:25:27long line bounced up the middle off the glove of Zamora, sparing up with it.
- 2:25:31Quick throw and they got it.
- 2:25:35Zamora just getting the tip of his glove on it and deflecting it just a bit towards sparing and shortstop.
- 2:25:42Rob up with it and got the throw away in a hurry for the first out.
- 2:25:47During the play goes 1-6-3 on Foster, one away, and Merv Redmond to the plate.
- 2:25:56Redmond one for three, hit the ball hard each time up.
- 2:26:01First pitch to him is down low ball.
- 2:26:12Zamora, this is his 20th appearance of the year. Redmond swings, hits one deep to left field.
- 2:26:18Going back to Summers, reaches up, makes the one-handed catch right in front of the 275 marker.
- 2:26:25And I tell you, Merv Redmond has been tapping that ball hard.
- 2:26:34Two away now and that'll bring Bill Plummer to the plate.
- 2:26:37Bill is two for three in an RBI. In the last time up in the sixth inning,
- 2:26:43had a hit-and-run single, a little looper over sparing into left field with Redmond at first base.
- 2:26:53Two outs, the base is empty. Zamora delivers and Plum looks at it outside of all.
- 2:27:00Raleigh Eastlick on deck. Eight to three, Reds lead.
- 2:27:08The 1-0, Plum swings on it, doesn't get it, one and one.
- 2:27:16The Reds win this one, it'll be the second double header that we've swept this year.
- 2:27:23Give us 34 wins and 22 losses. Plum swings and fouls one right over our head.
- 2:27:30And down it goes.
- 2:27:39One and two to count.
- 2:27:43Zamora works, Plummer takes, low on outside, down evens two-two.
- 2:27:58A wind, the two-two to Plummer. Swung on and hit the left field and Summers is there backpedaling
- 2:28:04and about a step from the warning track falls it in.
- 2:28:08And in the inning for the Reds, they get two runs on two heads. A big one, a two-run homer by Tony Perez.
- 2:28:15No errors, no one left on base. And after seven, the Reds eight, the Cubs three.
- 2:28:22Stop and enjoy a big, big boy, a cop with a camera that treats the national favorite coast to coast.
- 2:28:30Stop and enjoy a big, big boy.
- 2:28:32Watching the Reds win at Riverfront Stadium has always been a great way to spend the day.
- 2:28:38And one sure way to add to that enjoyment is going to Frisch's before or after the game.
- 2:28:43It's all part of the tradition. Why Frisch's?
- 2:28:46Because not only does Frisch's offer a wide variety of great tasting treats from sandwiches to full course dinners,
- 2:28:53they also have the convenience of curb service.
- 2:28:56When you drive into Frisch's, there's never any waiting for curb service.
- 2:29:00Simply press the button on the speaker and your order is taken immediately.
- 2:29:04Fast, easy, and convenient. That's the best way to describe Frisch's curb service.
- 2:29:10So the next time you're on your way to the game, curb your appetite.
- 2:29:13Visit your nearest Frisch's drive-in restaurant.
- 2:29:16Stop and enjoy a big, big boy, a cop with a camera that treats the national favorite coast to coast.
- 2:29:23No, stop and enjoy a big, big boy.
- 2:29:26Now the seven-inning totals look like this.
- 2:29:32The Reds have had eight runs on 12-inch, and the Cubs have had three runs on seven-ins.
- 2:29:40Rick Mundy will lead it off in the eighth, and back for the action, Marty Brenneman.
- 2:29:45Rick Mundy, 0-3 in the game, his last time up here to line drive to Foster in center field back in the fifth inning.
- 2:29:53Raleigh Eastwick, the third pitcher to work in this game for the Reds, with Clay Kirby the starting pitcher.
- 2:29:59Going three-and-a-third, Pedro Borbon working two-and-two-thirds innings of one-hit shutout baseball,
- 2:30:04and it is Pied who stands to get the win if his five-run Reds lead stands up over the next inning and a half.
- 2:30:11Mundy to be followed by Andy Thornton and Jerry Morales.
- 2:30:18Eastwick giving up a base hit to catcher Tim Hoseley starting off the seventh inning, but nothing after that.
- 2:30:25Now we've got a change in center field.
- 2:30:27Cesar Geronimo has come in defensively, replacing George Foster.
- 2:30:33Tall, lanky Raleigh Eastwick working to Mundy, and he grounds him to the right side.
- 2:30:37There's Flynn, and there's Perez, one away.
- 2:30:41Thornton is one for two with a walk.
- 2:30:46He doubled back in the sixth inning, walked and scored a run in the fourth, and popped out to shortstop in the second.
- 2:30:54Eastwick working, and it's taken low and inside, ball one.
- 2:31:11A big, big day for Cincinnati up to this point.
- 2:31:15Question about that.
- 2:31:17Call strike at the knees, one and one.
- 2:31:30Now it feels straight away for Andy Thornton who hit the ball very well in the sixth inning.
- 2:31:36Eastwick keeping it down to him, and it's two balls and one strike.
- 2:31:40Meanwhile, at Shea Stadium, the Mets are batting in the bottom of the 14th inning, tied with the Atlanta Braves at six apiece.
- 2:31:49All three, three and one.
- 2:32:02Thornton out of the batter's box.
- 2:32:07Now Eastwick checks in with Plummer. Here's a 3-1 delivery.
- 2:32:10That swung on and missed. Got the pitch up to him, and Thornton had the home run cut, but he did not get it.
- 2:32:26That's ball four low.
- 2:32:29Andy Thornton becomes the second man to reach on right-hander Eastwick.
- 2:32:33One down in the inning with first base occupied and Jerry Morales coming in.
- 2:32:38Fly it out, double a run in, and popped out to third base.
- 2:32:49Third walk given up by Reds pitching in this game. Kirby gave up two for bone none.
- 2:32:56Call strike one. Fast ball.
- 2:33:11One ball a strike. Plummer digging it out.
- 2:33:16Second game of the San Diego-Montreal doubleheader. It's the Padres trailing the Expos by a score of 3-1 after five and a half.
- 2:33:24San Francisco three runs in the ninth inning to take a 4-2 lead over Pittsburgh.
- 2:33:29Now the Giants are bidding to pick a pair.
- 2:33:32Here's a shot back into left field. Going back is Betts. Looking up, it is out of here a home run.
- 2:33:38Jerry Morales with a two-run home run to left field to draw the Cubs to within three runs. It's now 8-5.
- 2:33:50That's for Jerry Morales' second home run of the year.
- 2:33:55He has three RBIs in this game and the Cubs are down by three as they reach Raleigh Eastwick for the two-run homer.
- 2:34:13Here's Manny Trio as Clay Carroll goes down to start throwing. Ball one.
- 2:34:28Ball strike in the outside corner. A ball one strike to Trio who has had a hit, an RBI and three times up.
- 2:34:37Last time at that soft line drive between first and second, Perez made a fine play on it.
- 2:34:44Call strike two. Cubs have had eight hits. The Reds have had 12.
- 2:34:52They lead by three with one out and two runs in. Bases empty in the Chicago eight.
- 2:34:58There's a pop on the left side. Rose calling for it. Concepcion coming over by him and calling Pete off the ball.
- 2:35:04David makes the catch. Two away.
- 2:35:12Pitcher's scheduled a hit, but Pete Lecock will be the Chicago pinch hitter.
- 2:35:31Lecock who started in the first game in right field, one 0 for four has had one hit and six times up in this series.
- 2:35:38A pitch single yesterday's game.
- 2:35:41Left handed batting outfielder, first baseman hitting two 38. Cubs with two runs.
- 2:36:04Cubs with two runs into the eighth on a walk to Thornton and a home run to left field by Morales.
- 2:36:12Lecock looks at a fast ball away.
- 2:36:26Ground ball over the man. Oh, spared by Eastwick. Nice play and throwing on to Tony to retire Pete Lecock.
- 2:36:34In the inning, two runs ahead. Nobody left. And in the middle of the eighth inning, it's the Reds eighth, the Chicago Cubs five.
- 2:36:41If you think Howdy, partner and bonus Diaz sound like pretty friendly ways to greet a Red Rooter from Cincinnati, the Strobe Brewery has some friendly news for you.

- 2:38:39We're leading 8-5 in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:38:43And pitcher Raleigh Eastwick is standing in to get the inning underway.
- 2:38:47Frayling delivers and Eastwick takes strike one.
- 2:38:58Frayling, the fourth pitcher, Zahn, Watt, Zamora.
- 2:39:02Strike two on a swing and a miss. No balls and two strikes.
- 2:39:16Hoseley sets a target on the outside part of the plate. The pitch comes that way but misses.
- 2:39:22One ball, two strikes. This pitcher faces pitcher in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:39:30And there's a swing and a miss. Strike three. Ball pops out of Hoseley's mid.
- 2:39:35Or is it a strike swing? Yes it is. Throw on down to first base.
- 2:39:41So Eastwick a strike out and now Pete Rose will be at the plate.
- 2:39:46It is one for three with a sacrifice fly coming in to sixth inning.
- 2:40:10This defeat is taken on the outside edge for strike one.
- 2:40:25Missing away one and one.
- 2:40:43Two balls and one strike on Pete Rose.
- 2:40:49Reds only three outs away.
- 2:40:51Top of the ninth inning from sweeping the double header and taking four straight from Chicago to move a game and a half out in front of the Dodgers in the Western Division.
- 2:41:00There's a strike joint, two and two.
- 2:41:13Davey Concepcion waiting on deck. Frailing, Rose swung on fly ball right field and out of play.
- 2:41:26Hoseley a former product of the Detroit Tiger organization, most recently with the Oakland A's, is ready to get the ninth inning started.
- 2:41:35Eight to five to score. Eastwick trying to nail it down. A third win of the year for Pedro Borbón if he can subdue him here in the ninth.
- 2:41:42He winds, delivers and Hoseley takes ball one away.
- 2:41:57One-oh pitch taken outside a ball, two and nothing.
- 2:42:04Actually both of these games have been come from behind efforts for Cincinnati. We trail one-nothing in the first game before Benches-Homer in the seventh inning.
- 2:42:13And we were behind at one point in this one. There is ball three outside.
- 2:42:22Of course it's not over yet.
- 2:42:25Eastwick has yet to throw a strike.
- 2:42:31Three balls and nothing on right-handed batting Tim Hoseley.
- 2:42:37Robb sparing on deck. There is a call strike.
- 2:42:47This would be the second doubleheader win of the year for Cincinnati and the fourth twin bill we played. Ball four low.
- 2:43:04Eastwick walks his second batter in two plus innings of pitching. He'll face Sparing. At least he's a schedule hitter but he's been called back and it looks like Cardinal is going to be the Chicago pinch hitter.
- 2:43:25Cardinal playing the first game. Started out the day batting three twenty-six with five homers and twenty-six RBIs that wore a size four collar in game number one.
- 2:43:37So his average standing at three twenty as he comes up in a pinch hit role against Eastwick.
- 2:43:49I tell you the Cubs threw quite a scare into us in the first game. They loaded the bases in the ninth inning down by a run but Gary Nolan got Kessinger in a line out the center field to win that one.
- 2:44:03Cardinal taking a lot of time before stepping in. He talks momentarily with a plate umpire Bob Engel.
- 2:44:14He's down at first. Lead off walk. Cardinal bangs a bat on the plate. He's ready and so is Raleigh. Swung on ground ball. Fair ball at third. Throw on to second. They got the force out.
- 2:44:31Tim Hoseley who came in pretty hard on Doug Flynn and credit the rook with hanging right in there.
- 2:44:37We'll pause for station identification on the Reds baseball network. The home of the five thousand dollar button WLW Cincinnati.
- 2:44:46Purchase your Cincinnati Reds tickets downtown at 580 Walnut and at the stadium at Burkharts in Kenwood, Crye County, Beechmont, Hyde Park and Northgate and at home federal savings in Western Hills.
- 2:44:59Dargie Anderson has come out of the Reds dugout and he signals that he wants another pitcher to come in and try and finish this one off. It'll be left hander Will McAnany.
- 2:45:12Raleigh Eastwood goes two and one third innings. He allows the Cubs a couple of hits, two runs.
- 2:45:20No strikeouts and two walks and it'll be McAnany and we talk about the work this young man has given us every time he comes in.
- 2:45:31Worked twenty one and two thirds consecutive innings without allowing a run. That's dating back to the 20th of April. The string covers fifteen appearances.
- 2:45:41McAnany with the lowest earned run average on the club of 104. A 1-0 record and this is 21st appearance.
- 2:45:51Corbone with an appearance earlier in the game now leads the pitching staff with 22. Clay Carroll has 21 and now McAnany in has his 21st.
- 2:46:03Champ Summers scheduled a hit but Ron Dunn is swinging two bats in the on deck circle so apparently he will be a pinch hitter.
- 2:46:11Dunn a right handed batter as opposed to the left handed swinging Summers.
- 2:46:17Brad's out in front eight to five. During the specially big second game for one Tony Perez.
- 2:46:25Marked his return to the Reds lineup for the first time in almost two weeks in game one. One hitless but during the second game he is single twice.
- 2:46:33Holmered and four times up to knock in three runs.
- 2:46:41McAnany indicates that he is ready to work and it's going to be Ron Dunn coming on to pinch hit.
- 2:46:57Young Dunn batting 231 as one Holmer and four runs batted in for this 1975 Cub edition.
- 2:47:12McAnany checking Cardinal at first base. The pitch to Dunn of all outside.
- 2:47:26Well everything else now over.
- 2:47:32Except San Diego Montreal they're still underway besides ours here two balls and no strikes.
- 2:47:46Clay Carroll still throwing. There's a strike to him two and one.

- 2:48:13Well not the most artistic endeavor in the world but he made the play on it.
- 2:48:18That ball was hooking on John as it left the infield.
- 2:48:22He went back reached up and there it was two away.
- 2:48:27Tummies coming down to their final out and the batter will be third baseman Bill Madlock as he vids to keep the ninth inning going.
- 2:48:36And like two for four.
- 2:48:44McAnany working Madlock gets a shot Pete has it at third and this one belongs to the red.
- 2:48:50Here in the ninth inning for the Chicago Cubs who have just been swept four straight by the Cincinnati Reds.
