Latest / The Twin History Podcast / Unforgivable Blackness: The Jack Johnson Story Trailer
Transcript
- 0:00I would rank Jack Johnson as the greatest heavyweight boxer of
- 0:03all time. So today we're doing a special
- 0:06mini episodes and it's just myself, Johnny McCann, because
- 0:11my twin Joseph has been detained for unspecified reasons.
- 0:16I first became aware of Jack Johnson maybe when I was in my
- 0:22early 20s, and I was always awe struck by him because he lived
- 0:27his life the way he wanted to live it.
- 0:29I was going to empty chair Joseph like Clint Eastwood,
- 0:33empty chair Obama at the 2012 Republican convention.
- 0:39I mean, we love Clint, but I don't want to end up looking
- 0:42insane, so I think I would just keep it as it is.
- 0:47At a time when black people were being lynched for merely looking
- 0:52at a white woman, Johnson flaunted his romantic
- 0:58engagement, shall we say, with white women.
- 1:01So throughout our life, Joseph and I have been able to date
- 1:03white women with impunity. Johnson is like a mythical
- 1:08figure, and it may not be clear, but both our wives are white.
- 1:13He was in the dressing room before the fight and he he asked
- 1:17for more money from Shewa McIntosh, who pulled a cotton on
- 1:22Johnson and told him that if he didn't get into the ring, he'd
- 1:26be skinned alive. He said like no one can ever
- 1:30hurt this man, not even if you have an act.
