- 0:02Dog mums and dads. We're back again with another
- 0:04episode of The Natural Dog Mum, and today we're having a chat
- 0:08with the Healing Vet, also known as Doctor Edward Bassingthwaite.
- 0:13Today we're going to unpack the world of synthetic fragrances
- 0:17and perfumes a little bit and talk about the risks,
- 0:21essentially the health risks that you're taking with your
- 0:24pets in using these, whether you're spraying them on the dog
- 0:29coming out of the salon or in between baths and, and even the
- 0:33toxins in products that you may be using in and around your
- 0:37home. Stick around.
- 0:41Hi and thanks for coming. Hey, you're welcome.
- 0:44Thanks for having me. Important things we're talking
- 0:46about today. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 0:49It's coming. Coming I guess, from someone who
- 0:52had grooming salons for years. It's certainly an issue that's
- 0:56been on my mind for a very long time and something I I think
- 1:00more pet owners could do well to learn a little more about.
- 1:03I think fragrances, everyone wants their home and their dogs
- 1:06to smell nice and I can understand that.
- 1:10But the problem is that most of the products out there that help
- 1:14you do that have artificial fragrances in them.
- 1:17And most people don't know that artificial fragrances are
- 1:20synthesised from fossil fuels, from oil, and they are
- 1:25poisonous. They are carcinogenic.
- 1:29A lot of them. They upset the hormone system.
- 1:32They mimic hormones and things like that.
- 1:35And there's something that I have not allowed in my home for
- 1:39a lot of years now, mostly because I'm quite sensitive to
- 1:43them and they make me feel sick and give me a headache.
- 1:45But. I have the same problem.
- 1:49So, and a lot of people also don't understand that if you
- 1:54read the label on any kind of thing, whether it be laundry or
- 1:59household products or women's perfumes or candles and those
- 2:06things that have the sticks that stick out of them that
- 2:08supposedly make your room smell nice.
- 2:11If you'd see the word fragrance or parfum on and there's a
- 2:15sneaky one nature identical fragrance is another way to try
- 2:22and not tell you that there's something synthetic in there.
- 2:26They these are nasty, nasty chemicals.
- 2:29And your dogs, because they they are smaller than you and have a
- 2:32larger surface area relative to their volume, your dogs and your
- 2:36cats absorb a lot more proportionately of these types
- 2:39of substances. So they have a bigger toxic
- 2:41effect on your pets than they do on you.
- 2:44And if there's one thing you can do to make your whole house
- 2:46happier, it's to get rid of all fragrances, all artificial
- 2:50fragrances out of your home. And now most women's perfumes,
- 2:53including most of the really expensive ones, all have
- 2:56artificials in them. Absolutely.
- 2:59I mean we all love to to have a nice, soft, beautifully
- 3:03conditioned and groomed dog when we picked them up from salon,
- 3:06but I don't think people realise that there can be a cost to
- 3:12having them smell super pretty coming out of the groomers.
- 3:17Oh, yeah. And it's, it's an invisible
- 3:19cost. You know, it's there in the
- 3:20background. It's just degrading the immune
- 3:23system, bleaching away a little bit of vitality here, a little
- 3:26bit of vitality there. A lot of animals won't kind of
- 3:29show you outwardly that it's causing harm, but it is.
- 3:32Absolutely. And then you've got the added
- 3:34risk. I mean, besides it being
- 3:36absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin, a lot of dogs tend
- 3:40to lick themselves. So you've got that added risk as
- 3:42well of ingestion. Yeah, well, a lot of these are
- 3:46actually volatile organic compounds that are absorbed
- 3:48straight through the skin. They just go straight through
- 3:50the skin like it's not even there.
- 3:52So it goes straight in the body, upsets everything, and it's an
- 3:56invisible thing and most people don't even think of it.
- 3:58And I think too, the other thing that I've noticed is that people
- 4:03get kind of used to how awful artificial fragrances are and
- 4:06they don't notice how bad they are.
- 4:08But I can promise you that if you clean out your home and have
- 4:12no artificial fragrances in it for a month or two, you won't be
- 4:14able to walk down the laundry liquid aisle in the supermarket.
- 4:18You'll you'll suddenly go Oh my God, that is the red folk.
- 4:21And considering that our pets have a sense of smell many more
- 4:25times sensitive than ours, it's not just the the kind of
- 4:31chemical toxicity, but it's also the stress of smelling these
- 4:35things in their in their nose all the time.
- 4:37I think is bad. Absolutely.
- 4:39On top of that, you've got the build up over time as well which
- 4:45whether you've got a dog that has a pre existing condition or
- 4:48they're simply in an environment where these these products are
- 4:51used regularly, it can lead to one liver and organ issues down
- 4:56the track. Their bodies just are not able
- 4:59to process that chemical load. Yeah.
- 5:01So what do you need to do? You need to get really, really
- 5:03good at reading the labels and you need to anytime you see
- 5:08anything with fragrance, parfum, PARFUM, those two words mean
- 5:14that there is anything from 20 to 50 plus different types of
- 5:19artificial synthetic chemicals in there that are making that
- 5:23particular smell. And I know that there was a
- 5:25brand of shampoo that I used to use that then got put up by a
- 5:28big company and reformulated and they had nature identical
- 5:32fragrance on the label and it I couldn't it was obviously an
- 5:36artificial fragrance. I could smell it and it made me
- 5:38feel yucky. So you need to get really
- 5:43curious about everything that you're getting for your pets.
- 5:46Now, the other thing that just talking to Sherry before we came
- 5:50on the show is that suddenly there's all these brands of dog
- 5:54and cat perfumes, like perfumes for people.
- 5:58I would avoid them like the plague.
- 6:00I would absolutely not ever use any kind of perfume.
- 6:05I mean, even if you're using essential oils, which is what I
- 6:08would recommend to make your house smell nice.
- 6:10So there are some that you have to be careful not to expose your
- 6:12animals to you. You just there's no way putting
- 6:18a perfume on your pets is good for them.
- 6:20If you need to have, if you want to have an animal, just get them
- 6:23clean and they'll smell like a clean dog or a clean cat.
- 6:25And for me, that's a pretty lovely perfume all of its own.
- 6:27I don't need to be putting anything else on them.
- 6:30And if they do smell, get some other kind of smell going on,
- 6:33it's nearly always a sign that there's some kind of health
- 6:35issues that you need to deal with to make the smell go away,
- 6:37rather than just masking it with a toxic compound that's not
- 6:41going to help your animal's well being.
- 6:42Absolutely. And I think the other people
- 6:46rather the other thing that a lot of owners don't realise of
- 6:49all of those different components within the word
- 6:52parfum or fragrance, they're not listed because legally they're
- 6:58not required to be listed actually.
- 7:01So you can't even type them into Google or or ChatGPT and find
- 7:07out how they may negatively impact your pet's health.
- 7:12So. You can just assume that they're
- 7:20bad and you shouldn't use them. Yeah, exactly.
- 7:22If you see that word anywhere on an ingredients panel, put it
- 7:26back on the shelf. Basically, stick to, stick to,
- 7:30you know, hydrosols, essential oils.
- 7:34But again, make sure you're doing homework because there are
- 7:37some essential oils that can be triggering for dogs.
- 7:40Using too much of them is often an issue.
- 7:44And using them neat direct on the skin is, is a huge no no as
- 7:48well. Always make sure that you're
- 7:49doing your homework and make sure that you're using them
- 7:52safely because even though something's natural, if it's
- 7:55used in the wrong way, that can cause risks as well.
- 7:59And I think I think the other thing that some sometimes people
- 8:02forget is, you know, it's not just your pets that might be
- 8:06affected by what you spray on them.
- 8:09You're touching and cuddling and and passing that animal and any
- 8:16children in the household are having direct physical contact
- 8:20when they're passing or or snuggling with the dog as well.
- 8:24If you've got any asthmatics in that household or anyone with
- 8:27sensitive skin, which I have, you can end up with a secondary
- 8:30reaction yourself or your child. Absolutely, it is not a good
- 8:34thing. Definitely.
- 8:36Look, I think really the main thing is just to be aware that
- 8:43that this, this kind of stuff is something that makes a real
- 8:48difference to your animals in a bad way.
- 8:50And, and the more that you become aware of it, the more you
- 8:52can actually start to do something about it.
- 8:54You know, the more you can be aware of anything, the more you
- 8:58get to make better choices that are going to support greater
- 9:02vitality and less toxicity and and lot more longevity for your
- 9:05pets so that they're happy and well.
- 9:07And the good thing about getting rid of artificial fragrances for
- 9:10your pets is that it is going to make a hell of a positive impact
- 9:14for you too. Absolutely.
- 9:16And I think the other thing to to maybe think about as well, I
- 9:20mean it, it's not the case for all of these doggy perfume or
- 9:24fragrance brands, but I have noticed that there are a couple
- 9:28that claim to be vet approved or vet recommended.
- 9:31Have a look at the ingredients and really have a good think
- 9:35still about whether that's something that you're wanting to
- 9:39use. Sometimes, unfortunately, just
- 9:42because something is a bit recommended still doesn't mean
- 9:45it's the best choice for your pets.
- 9:47Yeah. And, you know, a lot of vets are
- 9:50not terribly aware of this whole problem either, you know, or
- 9:54think that it's not important or think that it's OK and, and that
- 10:00animals are fine with it. And some vets are, you know, it
- 10:02might, it might be that they're just that they're getting paid
- 10:07for their opinion. That can happen too.
- 10:09And you've got to be aware of all these things.
- 10:12I mean, I felt quite a bit of my career, didn't realise that
- 10:15artificial fragrances were a problem.
- 10:17And now I do. And now I tell everyone about it
- 10:19because it's a really, really important thing to to not get
- 10:24yourself tangled up in having that sort of stuff going to your
- 10:28system and into your pet system. Absolutely.
- 10:31And the other, the other ingredient that is in, well,
- 10:34pretty much everything, in addition to your synthetic
- 10:38fragrances, these other synthetic ingredients like your
- 10:41colours and your preservative systems.
- 10:44Not knocking preservatives, they have a very important role to
- 10:48keep products safe. But I don't think a lot of
- 10:52people realise that even though there are preservative systems
- 10:56out there that have been certified as natural or even
- 10:59organic and are very safe and suitable for human use, dogs
- 11:03have a different level of sensitivity, not just in terms
- 11:07of their smell but their skin. They can be more sensitive to
- 11:11certain compounds, and I found this even when I was early on
- 11:15researching ingredients for my product line.
- 11:19I actually don't use any preservatives.
- 11:21All of my products are oil based, so I don't need to.
- 11:25But my products are deliberately anhydrous, not just to reduce
- 11:30the amount of water that's required when they're being
- 11:33used, but also because of the fact in the research that I've
- 11:37done over the last five years, I have yet to find a preservative
- 11:40system that I feel comfortable using, especially when I'm
- 11:44thinking about dogs that have reactive skin.
- 11:47That's another issue as well. And generally when you've got
- 11:51perfumes and especially when you've got water in a product,
- 11:54you've got a preservative system in there.
- 11:56Yeah, that is true. The basic thing is try and get
- 12:01as much if if you must or need to have some kind of air
- 12:05freshener or something to make your house smell nice, then it's
- 12:10a really good idea to use natural things.
- 12:14Get a oil diffuser, an ultrasonic oil diffuser.
- 12:16Make sure that you got the right kind of oils that are not
- 12:20harmful to your pets and it'll make a difference, it really
- 12:26will. Absolutely.
- 12:27And just be very careful what you use on them as well as in
- 12:31the house, whether it's a, whether it's a spray on, whether
- 12:34it's the shampoo and conditioner you're using, any kind of
- 12:38topical products, not just perfumes and sprays.
- 12:42Look out for those ingredients. And if you see something you
- 12:46don't know, look it up. That's what ChatGPT is for more
- 12:51so than Google these days. And have a look.
- 12:54If you're not sure, ring the company and find out.
- 12:57If you can't get answers, I'd avoid it.
- 13:00I would just avoid it full stop. To be honest.
- 13:03I would avoid perfumes for animals.
- 13:05They're not necessary, and they're more than likely going
- 13:08to be harmful. Absolutely.
- 13:10Awesome, important thing to talk about.
- 13:14Yeah, I'm hope, I'm hoping it'll it'll get through for some some
- 13:17ease, I guess. We'll, I guess.
- 13:21We will. Hey.
- 13:23Yeah, definitely. But it definitely helps coming
- 13:26from Someone Like You. So thank you very much for for
- 13:29coming on and helping me get that message out there.
- 13:33You're welcome. Amazing.
