- 0:13Amber Kuhn: Hello TPR Nation. This is Amber Kuhn. Thank you
- 0:16for joining me on today's follow up Friday, where I'll be
- 0:20recapping this week's episode highlights and action items. On
- 0:23Monday, Matt and Micha were back to talk about investments, which
- 0:27stems from a recent question from another advisor who asked
- 0:31if advisors focus so much on investments because they can't
- 0:35figure out how to deliver value in another way. Now, the guy
- 0:38said investments do matter in that it's a large portion of the
- 0:42retirement plan, but that there's such big focus on AUM in
- 0:46the industry, instead of clients and heartbeats or value. But no
- 0:49matter how fancy your investment portfolio is, you need to judge
- 0:53the success of your portfolio, not only on beating the market,
- 0:57but on your client's ability to stick with it. Also, they
- 1:01pointed out that clients are always being bombarded with
- 1:04messages of having activity in their portfolio, but you need to
- 1:08remind your clients that your job is to do what's best for
- 1:11them and their goals. Now during these client conversations,
- 1:15Micah said you need to dispel the tax illusion and the market
- 1:19illusion, where clients think that the S, P or Dow is a direct
- 1:23return on their retirement or not, so he'll focus on his
- 1:26client's benchmark, not the market's benchmark. Learning how
- 1:30to communicate this and educate your clients is where you can
- 1:33get a lot of return for your investment with your time,
- 1:37especially when you're at conferences. The guys said to
- 1:40ask how others are responding to client questions about the
- 1:44market. Matt and Micah talked about how money is emotional on
- 1:48so many topics, so you need to be able to build a plan that
- 1:51meets your clients goals and that has the greatest likelihood
- 1:55of them sticking with it. Micah will tell his clients that he
- 1:59wants their portfolio to take the least amount of risk needed
- 2:02to meet their goals. But with this, they talked about how it
- 2:06doesn't mean that you're having a bunch of different models. You
- 2:10need to have a core handful of models and know the lanes you
- 2:14work in, especially so that when that next shiny object comes
- 2:17along, you continue to keep your focus narrow, but also by
- 2:21streamlining, you take into account how you can do this
- 2:24upscale so tasty and missed Monday's episode, Micah said,
- 2:28You need to pull up your investment account and your
- 2:31contributions and see if you're investing the same way you
- 2:34recommend to your clients. You need to be following your own
- 2:38advice. You want to make sure that you're putting your money
- 2:42where you're recommending it for your clients. You also want to
- 2:46be able to experience things as your clients do, which is a
- 2:49great way to learn what they actually go through. The guys
- 2:53also talked about body language and how you're presenting
- 2:56investments to clients. If you're not tuned into their body
- 3:00language, that can cause you to lose some credibility. You need
- 3:04to understand the difference between truly educating clients
- 3:07and lecturing, and you need to empower your clients to solve on
- 3:11their retirement and look at the things that they can control,
- 3:15such as their spending habits. And you want to give them the
- 3:19tools so that they stay invested when the market goes down. By
- 3:22doing this, you're delivering value and not just noise. And
- 3:26again, you want to have the best plan that your client is going
- 3:30to stick with, mad mega wrapped up by sharing that whatever
- 3:34investment strategy you follow, you need to be able to go into a
- 3:37client meeting with 100% conviction that it's the best
- 3:41possible investment strategy. Let's get into action items.
- 3:44Your investment allocations need to be perfectly aligned with
- 3:48your clients. So have someone else look at your investments
- 3:52and if they don't match, make that change now and ask your
- 3:55spouse about your financial plan and whether they know what it is
- 3:59you want them to be involved and know what the plan is. On
- 4:03Thursday, Jamie was talking about the rule of two and why
- 4:06it's so important in setting you and your team up for home runs
- 4:10with your clients, and how you can avoid losing clients and
- 4:14setting your team up for success, Jamie kicked off her
- 4:17episode by sharing how you do anything is how you do
- 4:20everything. She shared a story about a fishing lodge where her
- 4:24spouse is heading up for some time, and how there's a new rule
- 4:28from the younger protege, who let their confidence trump the
- 4:31prior expertise. But with this scenario, it was important to
- 4:35remind the team that they committed to doing something in
- 4:39that when you show up, you need to give it your absolute best,
- 4:42but also, because there was a younger couple who was running
- 4:46the lodge, that you need to give people an opportunity to
- 4:49recognize problems and to collaboratively solve it
- 4:53together. So with the story Jamie shared and how it connects
- 4:56to not losing clients, she said that you have to be those
- 5:00collaborative problem solvers and also not allow your
- 5:03confidence to interfere with someone else's expertise on a
- 5:06subject. So she then went into the role of two she admitted
- 5:10that she used to dread doing this because it used to entail a
- 5:14daily morning meeting with the entire team to review what
- 5:17client interactions took place the day before, and while she
- 5:21hated the meetings, she realized the importance of it, because
- 5:25her father wanted to know who was contacting the office,
- 5:28because the clients are how they're making a living, we
- 5:32wanted to know if they were on the verge of losing a client,
- 5:35and if they could do something about it. She shared a recent
- 5:39situation where an advisor in their office lost a client, and
- 5:43how they went back to review what happened. The client had
- 5:46reached out a couple of times with questions, and the
- 5:49operations team had responded. Now the answers were correct,
- 5:53but what they realized was that those answers work what the
- 5:57client needed. Instead, the advisor should have called, and
- 6:00this is the Rule of Two, if a client asks a question two
- 6:04times, you pick up the phone and call because something just
- 6:07isn't connecting, and you don't want that back and forth. And
- 6:11ultimately, if they're asking additional questions or reaching
- 6:15out more than once, then they have an underlying question that
- 6:19isn't being answered. Clients are hiring you for your
- 6:22knowledge, your expertise, and especially for your ability to
- 6:26offer concierge level service. They want someone in their
- 6:29corner giving expert advice on the things that they don't
- 6:33understand. It's that fear you're solving for and also
- 6:36anticipating your clients need to make sure that they're being
- 6:40taken care of. Now, with picking up that phone, it doesn't mean
- 6:44that you're deviating from your processes or from your search
- 6:47schedule, but it does mean that you become acutely attuned to
- 6:51what the real questions are from your clients. Now in her office,
- 6:55Jamie said that they have a lot of people who are interacting
- 6:59and talking with your client, but it's not always the advisor,
- 7:02and most of time that works, but there's going to be a small
- 7:06percentage where it doesn't, and you really need to be paying
- 7:10attention. So just consider what would happen if you just picked
- 7:14up the phone to have a conversation and really got to
- 7:17the underlying question that a client has, because it's about
- 7:21value in connecting. And Jamie said, when you don't show value
- 7:25and you aren't connecting with your clients, you're going to
- 7:28lose them. Jamie wrapped up by sharing that, if you feel you're
- 7:32losing clients more than you should, you need to use that
- 7:36rule of two, and also don't allow your confidence to
- 7:39interrupt someone else's expertise and make sure that you
- 7:42learn from your mistakes. That wraps up this six recap. So TPR
