- 1:43Speaker 3: The big news around the state of West Virginia. Actually
- 1:45Speaker 3: there were two big stories. One of those We're gonna
- 1:48Speaker 3: let the guys on talkline and also we will Amanda
- 1:51Speaker 3: and I will handle it on midday, and that was
- 1:53Speaker 3: the flooding that took place in certain parts of West Virginia.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Now Here in the Canall Valley. We just had some
- 1:59Speaker 3: heavy rain from time to time, but areas as you
- 2:04Speaker 3: head toward the eastern Panandle particularly mineral County just kind
- 2:07Speaker 3: of hammered, and we've got some pictures posted about that.
- 2:09Speaker 3: You can check those out on Chris Lawrence's pages or
- 2:12Speaker 3: on my pages Dave Allen Radio, or at Dave A
- 2:14Speaker 3: seventy on x if you'd like to see some of
- 2:16Speaker 3: the pictures there. So we'll handle that on the state
- 2:19Speaker 3: wide shows a little bit later on. But something that
- 2:22Speaker 3: broke actually during talk Line yesterday and then we covered
- 2:26Speaker 3: it as well on Metro New's Midday.
- 2:28Speaker 7: That is the.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Niosh, the restoration at least the way it looks for
- 2:32Speaker 3: a Niosh in Morgantown, and here in a Charleston court
- 2:35Speaker 3: room Judge iren Berger yesterday issuing her opinion on that.
- 2:40Speaker 3: So the Niosh workers were told late Monday night that
- 2:42Speaker 3: they are going to be going back to work, and
- 2:44Speaker 3: Brad Macklhonney who joined us to talk about that a
- 2:46Speaker 3: little bit later on. Now, we're going to do two
- 2:48Speaker 3: food segments today, and I know that you find that
- 2:50Speaker 3: hard to believe when you're talking about me talking about food,
- 2:53Speaker 3: but they're too similar, but not so similar. We've got
- 2:57Speaker 3: Mountaineer Food Bank folks in the studio with us, and
- 3:00Speaker 3: momentarily we're going to talk about the something I love
- 3:04Speaker 3: and it's barbecue. The Charlie West Barbecue Festival happened this
- 3:07Speaker 3: weekend City Center Slack Plaza. Sam Summerville is here to
- 3:10Speaker 3: talk about that. All that, plus your calls and text
- 3:12Speaker 3: to Bigley Pigley Wiggly hotline three zero four three four
- 3:15Speaker 3: five fifty eight fifty eight Tony the Taylor text three
- 3:18Speaker 3: zero four nine three five five zero zero eight. So
- 3:20Speaker 3: let's get right to it. Let's talk a little barbecue.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Sam Summerville is here. Welcome to the show, sir.
- 3:26Speaker 8: Good morning, Dave Well, happy to be here.
- 3:28Speaker 3: We're happy to have you here talk about this event
- 3:32Speaker 3: and also the Barber Debt Center, to whom this benefits.
- 3:35Speaker 8: Sure, then this is our eighth annual Charlie West Barbecue Fest.
- 3:40Speaker 8: It's being held at the City Center at Slack Plaza
- 3:43Speaker 8: on Summer Street this Saturday. It starts at two pm
- 3:47Speaker 8: and runs through eight pm. And as you mentioned, this
- 3:49Speaker 8: benefits are after school programming on the West Side the
- 3:53Speaker 8: Barber Debt Center. This will be the twenty seventh year
- 3:57Speaker 8: that the Barber Debt Center has been providing after school
- 3:59Speaker 8: program for students on the West Side. It's for kindergarten
- 4:03Speaker 8: through the fifth grade, and the students come there every
- 4:07Speaker 8: day after school. We have certified teachers tutors that work
- 4:11Speaker 8: with our students. As soon as they arrive, we serve
- 4:14Speaker 8: them dinner. We also provide him a snack before they
- 4:17Speaker 8: leave and go home that evening. But as I mentioned,
- 4:19Speaker 8: we help them with their homework, with their academics. We
- 4:22Speaker 8: have computer labs, recreational activities, and it really helps them
- 4:29Speaker 8: with their academics, but then also gives them a safe
- 4:32Speaker 8: haven and a place to say after school every day.
- 4:34Speaker 4: Now, for those who may not know, Sam who was Bobardette.
- 4:37Speaker 8: Boberdett was a pastor at a church on the West Side,
- 4:41Speaker 8: Emmanual Baptist, which hosts and where we have our offices
- 4:45Speaker 8: and one of our locations for the after school program.
- 4:48Speaker 8: Bob was a pastor there, always had a passion for
- 4:51Speaker 8: children and wanted to do something for children on the
- 4:55Speaker 8: West Side. He moved from Charleston then but then die
- 5:00Speaker 8: of cancer later and we because of his passion for
- 5:02Speaker 8: what he did for students while he was here, we
- 5:05Speaker 8: named the the organization after him.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Let's get into the particulars of the barbecue fest so
- 5:12Speaker 3: as you said, city centers like Plaza Downtown this Saturday,
- 5:15Speaker 3: talk about that.
- 5:16Speaker 8: Yeah, it's it's it's it's there as you mentioned city Center,
- 5:19Speaker 8: and it starts at two pm runs the eight pm.
- 5:22Speaker 8: We will have competition barbecuers and backyard barbecue chefs. They'll
- 5:28Speaker 8: be competing. They'll be we have judges. They'll be competing
- 5:32Speaker 8: UH in various categories such as best pulled barbecue, ribs,
- 5:38Speaker 8: best sauce. Also there's a wild card UH competition where
- 5:44Speaker 8: whatever they want to fix, the judges look at that
- 5:47Speaker 8: and then rank them and they'll they'll rank first, second,
- 5:50Speaker 8: and third then in those categories. But then the public
- 5:55Speaker 8: when they come they can buy tasting tickets and that'll
- 5:58Speaker 8: give you two a chance to sample the competitor and
- 6:03Speaker 8: backyard chefs what they've prepared for the day. And then
- 6:08Speaker 8: you can also if you buy ten tasting tickets, you
- 6:11Speaker 8: also get to vote for people's choice for the best
- 6:15Speaker 8: backyard chef, best competition barbecue chef.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Now, if people want to enter the competition, particularly the
- 6:22Speaker 3: backyard ers, is it too late to do that?
- 6:24Speaker 4: Can you so?
- 6:25Speaker 8: No, they can still sign up. We have a website
- 6:27Speaker 8: they can they can sign up on Charlie West Barbecue Fest.
- 6:32Speaker 8: They can go there, Dave Menser. If they know Dave,
- 6:35Speaker 8: they can reach to him. Dave is vice president of
- 6:38Speaker 8: our board and he's the one that came up with
- 6:41Speaker 8: this idea and has led the effort for the last
- 6:44Speaker 8: eight years. So it's still not too late to sign up.
- 6:47Speaker 8: We're happy to have as many as we can have.
- 6:49Speaker 4: But Dave allan chilling five.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Eddieline Bright to part by snap Fitness, with a wide

- 7:11Speaker 3: your what's your favorite barbecue favorite?
- 7:14Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 7:14Speaker 8: I like ribs. I'm kind of a rib guy. I
- 7:17Speaker 8: like that, But I like the sample. What's really interesting,
- 7:20Speaker 8: some of these backyard chef comes up, they come up
- 7:22Speaker 8: with some interesting items to sample.
- 7:24Speaker 4: And and you know, people take this stuff seriously.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Obviously, the professionals do, I mean, but the backyard folks
- 7:31Speaker 3: I mean, And it's like and al right, I got
- 7:32Speaker 3: a lot of But I mean, I'm a simple grill
- 7:34Speaker 3: guy myself. But when it comes to the people that
- 7:36Speaker 3: do the smoking, and then it's it's big, and it's competitive.
- 7:40Speaker 8: It is and it's it amazes me the effort and
- 7:43Speaker 8: the time and the effort that they put into it.
- 7:45Speaker 8: I know that they love doing it, obviously, or they
- 7:47Speaker 8: wouldn't do it. But it's such a fun event too.
- 7:50Speaker 8: You get to people, you get to talk to people,
- 7:52Speaker 8: meet people.
- 7:53Speaker 3: We have live music, Yeah, to talk about some of
- 7:55Speaker 3: the things going along with the with the barbecue.
- 7:58Speaker 8: Yeah, we gets mentioned earlier. It starts at two pm.
- 8:02Speaker 8: You can start tasting, buying tasting tickets. Then it runs
- 8:04Speaker 8: through eight. We have live music. We have three bands
- 8:07Speaker 8: starting at two pm. Peddler's Glory. We'll play from two
- 8:11Speaker 8: to three, eleven to eleven, then is from three thirty
- 8:14Speaker 8: to five Jeremy Short then ends a day from five
- 8:17Speaker 8: thirty to seven.
- 8:18Speaker 4: What kind of music are we talking about? Just a
- 8:20Speaker 4: little bit of everything.
- 8:21Speaker 8: Oh, it's a little bit of everything.
- 8:22Speaker 3: That's what you needed at an event like this. You
- 8:24Speaker 3: don't want too much of one thing. It's a little
- 8:26Speaker 3: bit of everything.
- 8:26Speaker 8: No, and it's a great location. It's you know, people
- 8:29Speaker 8: can walk around. We were selling t shirts, We're selling
- 8:33Speaker 8: obviously soft drinks, we have craft beers that we're selling,
- 8:36Speaker 8: and it's just a fun time. I love going to it.
- 8:40Speaker 4: I mean, it's how many years you've been doing this.
- 8:43Speaker 8: You say, this is the eighth year. We took a
- 8:45Speaker 8: couple about a two year break with COVID, but this
- 8:48Speaker 8: is the eighth year of it.
- 8:49Speaker 3: And that's what I like about the thing, too, is
- 8:52Speaker 3: with these type festivals, Sam, is that people can you know,
- 8:56Speaker 3: get together, fellowship a little bit, have a good time,
- 8:59Speaker 3: maybe have a cocktail, have a soda, have a water
- 9:01Speaker 3: or whatever, and enjoy some great food, enjoy some great music,
- 9:04Speaker 3: and you're helping out a really really great cause too.
- 9:06Speaker 8: Yes, it is. I mean I've been involved with or
- 9:10Speaker 8: after after school program UH for I've lost count of
- 9:14Speaker 8: the number of years now it's probably twenty plus years.
- 9:16Speaker 8: And it is. It provides a great service to students
- 9:19Speaker 8: on the West Side and and UH and and their families.
- 9:22Speaker 8: And I'm just really happy to be involved with it
- 9:26Speaker 8: and UH and really encourage people to come out learn
- 9:30Speaker 8: more about the Bobber Debt Center and just have a
- 9:32Speaker 8: great time.
- 9:33Speaker 3: And what is it about the after school program that
- 9:35Speaker 3: that you enjoy so much?
- 9:37Speaker 8: Well, I think it's uh, you know, getting seeing the
- 9:39Speaker 8: children and seeing how they they how it helps them
- 9:43Speaker 8: throughout the act through the year. You know that they
- 9:46Speaker 8: get reinforcement, uh, positive reinforcement there they have people who
- 9:50Speaker 8: care for them in an after school environment. It's a
- 9:53Speaker 8: safe place for them to go and uh, you know,
- 9:57Speaker 8: and we see how they advance and improve every the years.
- 10:01Speaker 8: And it's just really some of the stories and that
- 10:04Speaker 8: our staff tells us about it's just really touching.
- 10:08Speaker 3: All right, give us all the details again, the time,
- 10:10Speaker 3: the place and where they get tickets and all the stuff.
- 10:13Speaker 8: Go ahead, Okay, it's this Saturday, May seventeenth at City
- 10:18Speaker 8: City Center and they don't make that easy to pronounce
- 10:21Speaker 8: city Center at City Center at Slack Plaza, thank you.
- 10:24Speaker 8: And it starts at two pm runs to eight pm,
- 10:27Speaker 8: and there'll be some great barbecue, ribs and other things
- 10:30Speaker 8: to taste and the sample and just some great music
- 10:33Speaker 8: and a fun time.
- 10:34Speaker 3: It's going to be awesome. And again, where's the best
- 10:36Speaker 3: place for people to get more information? You said, I
- 10:38Speaker 3: know it's on social media and different places.
- 10:40Speaker 8: Yeah, we have a website you can look at that
- 10:43Speaker 8: Charlie West Barbecue Fest and you can get more information
- 10:47Speaker 8: in there. And as you mentioned earlier, we're still open
- 10:49Speaker 8: to any backyard chefs that want to come down. Give
- 10:52Speaker 8: us a call, reach out to us, and come on
- 10:54Speaker 8: down and have some fun.
- 10:55Speaker 3: And if you're not familiar with city Center at Slight Plaza,
- 10:58Speaker 3: it won't be hard to find when you pull into
- 11:00Speaker 3: Charleston because you'll smell it. You know, about the time
- 11:02Speaker 3: you get the Cistonville you you'll probably smell it, right,
- 11:05Speaker 3: Oh you do?
- 11:05Speaker 8: I mean these folks start coming in on Friday evening.
- 11:08Speaker 8: They're cooking all night and I love getting there early
- 11:11Speaker 8: Saturday morning and just the smell is just awesome.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And maybe going well, I don't know if this is
- 11:17Speaker 3: good enough, but as an official of this, you Sam,
- 11:21Speaker 3: you just say, well, maybe I just need to try
- 11:22Speaker 3: it a little bit of that, just to make sure
- 11:24Speaker 3: that it's competition ready, right, that's what you do.
- 11:26Speaker 8: Well, definitely, And these guys, I mean, there's so much
- 11:28Speaker 8: fun these chefs, I mean, they come around and have
- 11:31Speaker 8: you try this, try this, you know, sampled a little bit.
- 11:34Speaker 3: And one o'clock and Sam is pretty much stuff at
- 11:36Speaker 3: that point.
- 11:37Speaker 4: It's not even started yet.
- 11:39Speaker 3: All right, Sam again, it's all happening in the city

- 16:00Speaker 4: Specifics.
- 16:01Speaker 7: Sure, so The Mountaineer Food bank is the largest emergency
- 16:04Speaker 7: food provider in the state Of West. Virginia there are
- 16:06Speaker 7: only two food banks In West. Virginia you have The
- 16:08Speaker 7: Mountaineer Food bank and then you have Facing Hunger Food
- 16:11Speaker 7: bank down In. Huntington we are both members of The
- 16:13Speaker 7: Feeding America National. Network we serve forty eight of the
- 16:17Speaker 7: fifty five counties In West virginia and we have about
- 16:20Speaker 7: four hundred and sixty feeding agency. Partners so those are
- 16:24Speaker 7: your local community food, pantries hot meal, programs backpack, programs
- 16:30Speaker 7: so we source the food and then we get it
- 16:33Speaker 7: out to the folks in the, community boots on the.
- 16:35Speaker 7: Ground and, additionally we also have some of our own.
- 16:39Speaker 7: Programs you might see some of our trucks out on the.
- 16:41Speaker 7: Road we have our mobile pantry, Program Veterans Table, Program
- 16:46Speaker 7: Extra Mile Summer, feeding so we're out in the.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Community talk about the need Of Mountaineer Food bank and
- 16:55Speaker 3: the need of the people right. NOW i mean there's
- 17:00Speaker 3: always been a, need there always will be a, need
- 17:02Speaker 3: and never going to eradicate. Things you realize that there's
- 17:04Speaker 3: always any of these, services but to talk about the
- 17:07Speaker 3: need in twenty twenty, five, Yeah.
- 17:10Speaker 7: So, unfortunately food and security continues to, climb especially In
- 17:14Speaker 7: West virginia in the rural. Areas right, now there are
- 17:17Speaker 7: over two hundred and fifty thousand food insecure neighbors In West.
- 17:21Speaker 7: Virginia so if you think about, that about one in
- 17:24Speaker 7: seven adults are facing hunger and one in five children
- 17:28Speaker 7: don't know where their next meal is coming. From, SO i,
- 17:32Speaker 7: mean when you really stop and think one in every
- 17:35Speaker 7: seven of us is facing food in, security you know
- 17:38Speaker 7: that's really, like, wow what can we do to continue
- 17:42Speaker 7: to feed folks so that they aren't going to bed?
- 17:44Speaker 3: Hungry and when you use, that we hear that term
- 17:48Speaker 3: thrown around a lot and At licia this food. Insecurity
- 17:52Speaker 3: what is the definition of food in? Security so we
- 17:54Speaker 3: picture in our, head you, know somebody that has no.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Food that's not necessarily the case when it comes to food.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Insecurity talk about that?
- 18:02Speaker 7: Definition, Sure so food insecurity just means that you may
- 18:06Speaker 7: not have access to, healthy nourishing. Food and we want
- 18:12Speaker 7: to be able to provide folks with nourishment so that
- 18:15Speaker 7: they're able to be.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Successful and how do you go about?
- 18:18Speaker 7: That so we during our mobile pantry, distributions we make
- 18:23Speaker 7: sure that we provide shelf stable food in addition to fresh, milk, meats, dairy, bread.
- 18:33Speaker 7: Vegetables we work with some of our local farmers to
- 18:37Speaker 7: supply fresh. Produce a lot of times we have big
- 18:40Speaker 7: bags of apples that were given out to our neighbors
- 18:43Speaker 7: as they come through the.
- 18:44Speaker 4: Line and how does the line? WORK i mean who
- 18:46Speaker 4: did just so our.
- 18:48Speaker 7: Mobile pantry program we go out into the most rural
- 18:52Speaker 7: areas Of West. Virginia we try to service those that
- 18:56Speaker 7: maybe have barriers of. Transportation or other issues and they
- 18:59Speaker 7: aren't able to to come. Out maybe they don't have
- 19:01Speaker 7: a grocery store in their. Community so we bring our truck.
- 19:04Speaker 7: In we unload all of the food on. Pallettes we
- 19:07Speaker 7: have volunteers that. Come the neighbors line up and they drive,
- 19:11Speaker 7: through and as they drive, through we load up their
- 19:13Speaker 7: car with the.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Food is there any any type of requirements for people
- 19:18Speaker 3: to get it or any or resp to?
- 19:20Speaker 4: Anybody for our mobile.
- 19:21Speaker 7: Food program mobile pantry, program they have to be at
- 19:24Speaker 7: snap at that snap, level so they we do an
- 19:28Speaker 7: intake process when they line, up and as long as
- 19:31Speaker 7: they meet that, threshold they're able to get access to that. Food,
- 19:34Speaker 7: now we do some programs like our Fresh produce markets
- 19:38Speaker 7: here In Kanawha. County those are once a month and
- 19:42Speaker 7: the location kind of, varies but they're open to anybody
- 19:44Speaker 7: In Kanawha, county regardless of. INCOME i, mean there are
- 19:47Speaker 7: no questions. Asked as long as you live In Kanawha,
- 19:49Speaker 7: county you can come through and it's it's set up
- 19:51Speaker 7: kind of like a farmer's, market so folks just walk.
- 19:53Speaker 3: Through where are some you, said it varies as to
- 19:55Speaker 3: where it, is but give us an. Example some of
- 19:57Speaker 3: the places that they are not dates or, anything but
- 19:59Speaker 3: so we've been At we've.
- 20:01Speaker 7: Been over in The West, Side we've been over, this
- 20:04Speaker 7: we have one This friday actually that's going to be
- 20:06Speaker 7: over at The Saint Albans Park Roadside. Park we've been
- 20:11Speaker 7: at local, churches so it just kind of kind of
- 20:15Speaker 7: varies throughout the.
- 20:15Speaker 3: County and you talked about using utilizing worker at local
- 20:20Speaker 3: farmers as much as.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Possible get into that a little.
- 20:22Speaker 7: Bit, Yes so we do have somebody dedicated to reaching
- 20:26Speaker 7: out to our local farmers because we want to help
- 20:28Speaker 7: support the local. Economy so we for, example for these
- 20:32Speaker 7: events that we're going to do With hendrickson And long
- 20:34Speaker 7: one of instead of having your typical, swag we're going
- 20:37Speaker 7: to be handing out popcorn From Jumping Johnny's. Popcorn and
- 20:41Speaker 7: that's one of the local farmers that we. Use and
- 20:43Speaker 7: then in our Extra mile program that we do In
- 20:46Speaker 7: clay And Mercer, county we have fresh dried fruits from
- 20:50Speaker 7: another partner farmer that we.
- 20:53Speaker 3: USE i, mean it's a wonderful, program it really really.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Is any of its hard AND i know there are
- 20:58Speaker 3: a lot of folks that provide food for, people AND
- 21:01Speaker 3: i get. That but when you talk about it being
- 21:03Speaker 3: a food bank like it, IS i, MEAN i GUESS
- 21:05Speaker 3: i was shocked to learn that there's only two in
- 21:07Speaker 3: the entire city Of West virginia that do what you
- 21:09Speaker 3: do like.
- 21:10Speaker 7: This, yes and a lot of folks may call themselves
- 21:14Speaker 7: a food, bank but there's a difference between a food
- 21:16Speaker 7: bank and a food. Pantry so as the food, bank
- 21:18Speaker 7: we are working with the retail. Partners we're going, out
- 21:21Speaker 7: we're sourcing that food and then we're distributing it to
- 21:25Speaker 7: the agencies across the state and they're getting it at
- 21:28Speaker 7: either a discounted rate or free and then they you,
- 21:31Speaker 7: know it stays local in the.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Community it amazes me how many people are out there
- 21:36Speaker 3: doing this kind of. STUFF i, mean you, know whether it's,
- 21:39Speaker 3: churches whether it's civic. ORGANIZATIONS i Mean West. Virginia you,
- 21:42Speaker 3: know we're giving people here in these.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Parts we really.
- 21:45Speaker 7: Are.
- 21:46Speaker 4: DAVID i want to go back to you for a.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Moment you're with the law firm Of hendrickson And.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Long, well other than just having a great space and
- 21:53Speaker 3: Downtown charleston for these people to be set up in
- 21:55Speaker 3: front Of obviously you believe in the program or you
- 21:58Speaker 3: wouldn't be here today and you wouldn't be offering. That
- 22:00Speaker 3: but what is it about this program that appeals to
- 22:01Speaker 3: you and the folks at your law.
- 22:02Speaker 11: Firm, well first of, All i've been giving money to
- 22:05Speaker 11: the program for a number of. YEARS i don't know
- 22:06Speaker 11: how many Years i've been doing, that AND i think
- 22:08Speaker 11: a lot of other guys in our firm do as,
- 22:10Speaker 11: well guys and girls as. Well and we looked at
- 22:14Speaker 11: the program as. This they don't have any. WASTE i,
- 22:16Speaker 11: mean they are very efficient in what they. Do there's
- 22:20Speaker 11: not a lot of overhead in this, program and so
- 22:22Speaker 11: it's dollars in dollars out to the people that need to,
- 22:25Speaker 11: help and so we feel really good about supporting them
- 22:28Speaker 11: and making sure that they get all everything they. Need
- 22:30Speaker 11: and we just thought this could give them an added little,
- 22:33Speaker 11: perk a little more, visibility especially during the time when
- 22:36Speaker 11: we have all these out of state, people out of
- 22:38Speaker 11: town people coming into our. Community you, know they might
- 22:41Speaker 11: as well help us as.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Well and you talked about one of the events that
- 22:45Speaker 3: you're going to be sitting in front of. It but we're
- 22:46Speaker 3: going to see you guys out from WHAT i, understand
- 22:48Speaker 3: we're going to see you folks out a. Lot with The,
- 22:49Speaker 3: mountain their Food, bank and with your law. Firm we're
- 22:51Speaker 3: going to be a lot of different.
- 22:52Speaker 11: Events, yes we're gonna try To we're going to try. To,
- 22:55Speaker 11: well the first one is going to be the Art
- 22:56Speaker 11: walk and when is That may thirty? First ironically are
- 23:00Speaker 11: firm sponsors do our? Walk double dip, there and then
- 23:04Speaker 11: we're going to try to do some things during regatta
- 23:06Speaker 11: AND i think we'll be set up probably every day
- 23:08Speaker 11: during The regratta as we plan right, now and then
- 23:11Speaker 11: During christmas time at The Christmas.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Preade and so primarily you're doing these things in Downtown.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Charleston BUT i, Know, alicia if you would not be
- 23:22Speaker 3: able to do what you do without partners like this,
- 23:25Speaker 3: gentleman his law, firm and a lot of other businesses
- 23:27Speaker 3: that get involved around the.
- 23:28Speaker 4: State, yes we.
- 23:29Speaker 7: Could not do the work we do without our, donors
- 23:32Speaker 7: without our community, partners our, volunteers they are really the
- 23:36Speaker 7: heart of the food. Bank we rely on donations to
- 23:41Speaker 7: help provide some of these food products to our.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Neighbors do you have an appeal that you would have
- 23:47Speaker 3: for businesses out there like The Hendrickson long for, FOLKS i,
- 23:51Speaker 3: mean do you just, say, hey here's a, number here's
- 23:54Speaker 3: a website you can, call we need.
- 23:56Speaker 4: You how does that.
- 23:57Speaker 7: Work, yes we do have some sponsorship opportunity and he's,
- 24:00Speaker 7: available and you can go to our Website mountaineerfoodbank dot
- 24:04Speaker 7: org and click on our programs to learn about our.
- 24:08Speaker 7: Information you can contact me directly if you're interested in
- 24:11Speaker 7: sponsoring a mobile pantry distribution or getting involved in Our
- 24:15Speaker 7: Veterans table. Program Our Veterans table, program we're able to
- 24:19Speaker 7: serve about fourteen hundred veterans a, month and that program
- 24:22Speaker 7: cost it costs about forty dollars a box per, veteran
- 24:26Speaker 7: and that program relies solely on grants and. Donations all, right.
- 24:30Speaker 3: And our, VETERANS i, mean, look if you, can't if
- 24:33Speaker 3: you can't help out, veterans THEN i MEAN i got
- 24:38Speaker 3: not to be, edited not to. EDITORIALIZE i got no
- 24:39Speaker 3: room for, you you, know because our veterans are the
- 24:41Speaker 3: people that are that make me able to be able
- 24:44Speaker 3: to come on this radio and talk and us to
- 24:46Speaker 3: be able to do what we do in this.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Country so we got to take care of our.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Veterans and, know no state has ever done more for
- 24:54Speaker 3: the country as far as serving as and losing people
- 24:57Speaker 3: as as What West virginia. Has all, right let's go
- 25:01Speaker 3: back and talk about this art walk for a. Moment
- 25:03Speaker 3: it's happen On may. Thirty, first you guys are going
- 25:05Speaker 3: to be set up out front. There what's that going
- 25:06Speaker 3: to look. Like people can just make, donations they can
- 25:08Speaker 3: bring stuff. Down what's that going to look.
- 25:10Speaker 11: Like, well we're gonna have a huge banners that we're
- 25:12Speaker 11: not gonna be hard to, see can't message on front
- 25:15Speaker 11: of the, building and we're gonna have it up for
- 25:17Speaker 11: a couple of days, hopefully and we're gonna have a
- 25:19Speaker 11: couple of tables out. Front there will be a bench
- 25:22Speaker 11: that can donate can goods and things like, that and
- 25:25Speaker 11: then we'll also be able to take cash donations with
- 25:28Speaker 11: a scanning device that we. Have we have people there
- 25:32Speaker 11: the whole time that the art walk's going on and
- 25:35Speaker 11: just trying to get the publicity. Out so we're right
- 25:38Speaker 11: literally in the middle Of Capitol street at two, fourteen
- 25:42Speaker 11: and so you can't miss. This everybody's got to walk
- 25:44Speaker 11: by there at one point in, time and we hope
- 25:46Speaker 11: they walk by there with a whole bag of canned
- 25:49Speaker 11: goods and a bunch of, cash.
- 25:51Speaker 3: IT'S i, mean you can't you can ask for more than.
- 25:53Speaker 3: That and, again there's so many events going on in Downtown.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Charleston then before you, guys we talked about The Charlie
- 25:57Speaker 3: West Barbecue fest that's going, on going to have about
- 26:01Speaker 3: ten thousand people come to town over the next week
- 26:03Speaker 3: for the biking. Event you got regatta going, on so many,
- 26:08Speaker 3: things things going on out on the boulevard and. Whatnot
- 26:11Speaker 3: charleston is a happening place during the spring and summer
- 26:14Speaker 3: months for that, matter, anytime so we should be able
- 26:16Speaker 3: to do pretty well with. It and just remember these
- 26:18Speaker 3: folks that when you come out for events like especially
- 26:21Speaker 3: like you, said like the art, walk bring you cash
- 26:25Speaker 3: or bring your donations you certainly would. Appreciate, Alsha i'm
- 26:27Speaker 3: going to give you the final word here for an
- 26:29Speaker 3: appeal to people to help Out Mountaineer Food bank in.
- 26:32Speaker 7: General, yeah we always need, volunteers we always need. Donors

- 31:17Speaker 4: And that sort of.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Thing and and somebody on the Call brad was on
- 31:20Speaker 3: the call this, morning said so what are you covered, Today?
- 31:22Speaker 4: Brad And brad.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Was out for his uh you, know he was out
- 31:26Speaker 3: getting a little exercise this, morning and hit the statement began,
- 31:28Speaker 3: with so that tells you, what how busy mister maclanny's
- 31:34Speaker 3: going to be. Today SO i have him on the
- 31:35Speaker 3: air here, momentarily and SO, i, uh you, know it's
- 31:39Speaker 3: JUST i don't, know there's only so many hours a
- 31:41Speaker 3: day for Mister, brad and so we're gonna have him
- 31:43Speaker 3: with us here. Momentarily the the big, NEWS i guess
- 31:48Speaker 3: out of out of out of the news department was
- 31:53Speaker 3: this whole thing With niosh yesterday In. Morgantown took a
- 31:55Speaker 3: lot of people by by surprise that when we were
- 31:59Speaker 3: Told monday night that those workers In morgantown and again
- 32:03Speaker 3: you may be, thinking, well why is this important to this? Area,
- 32:06Speaker 3: well it is important to this area for a number of.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Reasons number, one it's well over one hundred or So
- 32:10Speaker 3: West virginians that are.
- 32:12Speaker 4: Taking a look at their job.
- 32:13Speaker 3: Situation but also the court case was in court right
- 32:18Speaker 3: down the street from us here In Judge eyrenberger's court
- 32:20Speaker 3: room about the injunction to put a halt to everything
- 32:25Speaker 3: followed by a coal. Miner because What niosh does is they,
- 32:31Speaker 3: process they do their research and whatever when it comes
- 32:33Speaker 3: to black lung benefits and so if people if coal
- 32:37Speaker 3: miner has got a situation where he or she has
- 32:43Speaker 3: questions about their, health if it doesn't go Through, NIOSH
- 32:47Speaker 3: i mean everything was put on. Hold AND i think
- 32:48Speaker 3: the biggest, issue and we talked about this on The
- 32:51Speaker 3: Metro News midday, show the biggest issue was is that
- 32:53Speaker 3: they were in sort of a holding. Pattern it was
- 32:57Speaker 3: that they didn't know what's what their status, was and
- 33:03Speaker 3: they really couldn't seem to get any, ANSWERS i, mean
- 33:07Speaker 3: and and one of the issues was there was a
- 33:09Speaker 3: particular suit filed by a coal miner uh and uh
- 33:12Speaker 3: and he was kind of at the center of this whole.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Thing and when you're when you're in that situation and
- 33:19Speaker 3: they're trying to transfer you from one in this in
- 33:22Speaker 3: one particular, case this coal miner needed an exact diagnosis
- 33:27Speaker 3: and in exact, paperwork so he wanted to continue, working
- 33:30Speaker 3: but they needed to move him from the inside of
- 33:34Speaker 3: the coal mine to the, outside and everything was just
- 33:36Speaker 3: kind of put up on.
- 33:37Speaker 4: Hold and so we do have at least we have that.
- 33:42Speaker 3: Now But Dave allen showing five E D live brought
- 33:44Speaker 3: to you part By Pinnacle consultants Or services involved developing
- 33:46Speaker 3: comprehensive management plans to outline strategies for controlling and minimizing
- 33:51Speaker 3: AS buss. Exposure perfect for commercial property owners and. Managers
- 33:54Speaker 3: Visit Pinnacle court dot net because what you don't know
- 33:56Speaker 3: can hurt.
- 33:56Speaker 4: You let's go To. Brad, brad welcome to the.
- 34:00Speaker 6: Show oh, hi and thanks for having. Me, hello two
- 34:04Speaker 6: days in a. Row what are we doing?
- 34:05Speaker 4: Tomorrow two days in a?
- 34:06Speaker 3: Row you are, here and well it's because you're, important all,
- 34:13Speaker 3: Right so we will keep you too long today BECAUSE
- 34:14Speaker 3: i was telling the folks everything that you are covering.
- 34:17Speaker 3: Today but so tell us to the timeline, here because
- 34:20Speaker 3: it kind of took people by. SURPRISE i, mean Apparently
- 34:23Speaker 3: monday night The niosh workers were told to report to.
- 34:26Speaker 3: Work who were they told to report to work?
- 34:29Speaker 6: BY i don't know the answer to, That, okay thank. You,
- 34:37Speaker 6: SO i mean two things did happen almost at. Once
- 34:41Speaker 6: Both Congressman Riley moore And Senator Shelley Moore, capito who
- 34:46Speaker 6: indeed Are ken announced somewhat, triumphantly you, know at midday
- 34:53Speaker 6: yesterday that These niosh workers one hundred or so would
- 34:58Speaker 6: be going back to work that they've Been they, cited,
- 35:02Speaker 6: uh conversations With Health secretary OF Rfk junior did not
- 35:09Speaker 6: seem to know at that, moment you, Know, niosh those
- 35:13Speaker 6: different things didn't seem to know which of Those niosh.
- 35:16Speaker 6: Bookers it was later in the Day Judge burgers became
- 35:23Speaker 6: public and it was a ruling that that the the
- 35:29Speaker 6: federal government had seemingly abandoned its way of processing black
- 35:36Speaker 6: lung claims and that by federal law needs to have a,
- 35:40Speaker 6: way and she Ordered Judge, burger did the federal government
- 35:44Speaker 6: to get back to business and do. It to do,
- 35:46Speaker 6: that they're going to need those employees. Back uh and
- 35:49Speaker 6: And Joe, burger you know means now words saying. Immediately
- 35:52Speaker 6: so what the overlap? IS i am not, sure you.
- 35:55Speaker 6: Know it may be that it was the exact same
- 35:59Speaker 6: news coming down through two different. Channels it could be
- 36:03Speaker 6: that it's A venn diagram and just a little bit of.
- 36:05Speaker 6: Overlap we may learn more at this hearing this morning
- 36:08Speaker 6: that began moments. Ago it's a budget hearing before The
- 36:13Speaker 6: House Appropriations. Committee Congressman Riley moore is on that, committee
- 36:17Speaker 6: But house Of Human services is being represented By Rfka
- 36:22Speaker 6: junior In congress today And congressman more so that he
- 36:26Speaker 6: would ask him our egor this morning more about the
- 36:30Speaker 6: details of getting some of THOSE niash workers.
- 36:32Speaker 3: Back it was kind of interesting the way the whole thing,
- 36:34Speaker 3: broke AS i, said because YESTERDAY i was getting ready
- 36:37Speaker 3: for The Metro news midday show with Thirteen news And
- 36:40Speaker 3: Tonight live Anchor Amanda bear to myself Chief plug powered
- 36:43Speaker 3: By Selango, law and we were getting ready for the
- 36:45Speaker 3: show yesterday and they already Had meadows And wilson actually
- 36:50Speaker 3: already Had Congressman Riley more scheduled to be on the show,
- 36:53Speaker 3: anyway and then all of a, sudden he just kind
- 36:57Speaker 3: of breaks that and then you can hear and we
- 36:59Speaker 3: played clip. YESTERDAY i mentioned Its, midday urged people to
- 37:02Speaker 3: go back and listen to. It you can Hear wilson In,
- 37:04Speaker 3: meadows you, know kind of going, no, wait, wait, wait hold,
- 37:07Speaker 3: it hold, up back, up as we used to, say you,
- 37:08Speaker 3: know rack him up and shoot him. Again, uh well
- 37:10Speaker 3: is that? Again and, uh and he just kind of
- 37:13Speaker 3: threw that out. There and then news as you, said
- 37:15Speaker 3: became you, know started to be, released and, Uh jeff
- 37:18Speaker 3: was on with, us and then we were lucky enough
- 37:20Speaker 3: to be able to garner an interview With Senator Shelley
- 37:22Speaker 3: Moore capito. Yesterday she moved from things around to be
- 37:25Speaker 3: able to be On Metro News midday with me yesterday
- 37:27Speaker 3: to talk about, uh to talk about the whole situation and,
- 37:31Speaker 3: uh and then, UH i DO i would give these
- 37:33Speaker 3: guys a. PLUG i do think That Senator capitol And Senator,
- 37:36Speaker 3: JUSTICE i do believe we're going to be on talk line.
- 37:38Speaker 3: Today so SO i mean are we are?
- 37:42Speaker 4: We are we?
- 37:42Speaker 6: Done?
- 37:43Speaker 4: Now is it a?
- 37:43Speaker 3: DUNDEE i mean there's a hearing going, on as you
- 37:45Speaker 3: said WITH. Rfk where where does it stand as we?
- 37:48Speaker 6: Speak, Brad, YEAH i MEAN i think the black lung
- 37:52Speaker 6: screening was at the center of all. THIS niosh does
- 37:57Speaker 6: have additional, duties and it was hundreds of people in
- 38:00Speaker 6: line to lose their jobs In. Morgantown so you know two,
- 38:04Speaker 6: things the job losses and the significant employer In morgantown
- 38:10Speaker 6: according to The senator and The, congressman about one hundred
- 38:14Speaker 6: of those are coming. Back if they are the same
- 38:16Speaker 6: people who do the black lung, screening then you know
- 38:20Speaker 6: that THAT i think kicks off the board the question of,
- 38:23Speaker 6: well how would you do black lung screening if you
- 38:26Speaker 6: didn't have the people to do, it and if it's legally,
- 38:28Speaker 6: required and you, know as a health matter for coal
- 38:31Speaker 6: miners who are are developing the symptoms of black, lung
- 38:35Speaker 6: it is it is very serious and it moves, fast
- 38:39Speaker 6: so that could be more or less. Resolved but you
- 38:43Speaker 6: know what we don't, KNOW i think is the other
- 38:46Speaker 6: duties AT, niosh those other, employees whether whether they are
- 38:51Speaker 6: still subject to reduction and forced, notifications probably still hundreds
- 38:56Speaker 6: of them. ARE i, think you, know just doing the.
- 38:58Speaker 6: MATH ahhs continues to say that it is it's reorganizing
- 39:05Speaker 6: and assessing its roles of various things under under its
- 39:10Speaker 6: under its. Scope so you, KNOW i think more to.
- 39:14Speaker 6: Come it's this administration really on multiple, levels the federal,
- 39:19Speaker 6: administration the executive, branch keeps you. Guessing Senator justice would
- 39:24Speaker 6: say don't don't have your hair on. FIRE i mean
- 39:27Speaker 6: they'll announce sounds really, dramatic and you know there there
- 39:34Speaker 6: are questions and real. Worries and then is to scale
- 39:39Speaker 6: it way, back maybe not to exactly where it, was
- 39:42Speaker 6: but to kind of let the freak out happen and then.
- 39:46Speaker 6: Retreat so did.
- 39:49Speaker 8: You just say freak?
- 39:50Speaker 6: Out?
- 39:50Speaker 3: Brand did you just say freak? Out not to be
- 39:52Speaker 3: confused with freak, off which you know is being talked
- 39:55Speaker 3: about a lot in The diddy trial these. Days please
- 39:57Speaker 3: tell me that's not what you, Meant.
- 40:00Speaker 6: Uh freak? OUT i THOUGHT i was on the mountain.
- 40:03Speaker 4: Here, well we wouldn't be playing that on the. MOUNTAIN
- 40:06Speaker 4: i can tell you that right, now but go.
- 40:07Speaker 6: AHEAD i, mean that's another word for What Senator justice would,
- 40:13Speaker 6: say don't let your hair get on. FIRE i, mean
- 40:18Speaker 6: but on the other, hand how are you supposed to
- 40:20Speaker 6: react to things that are that are that are you,
- 40:23Speaker 6: know very? Serious and it's it's at multiple. Levels it's the,
- 40:27Speaker 6: tariffs the deportations are not necessarily just caravans and people
- 40:35Speaker 6: coming over the. Border it's it's college students At marshall
- 40:38Speaker 6: AND wvu who have gotten notifications that they're going to
- 40:41Speaker 6: have to go back. Home things are happening just pretty
- 40:46Speaker 6: facet of, life and initially they seem, extreme uh and then,
- 40:52Speaker 6: eventually you, know the pattern does seem to be that
- 40:55Speaker 6: that things get scaled, back and that appears to be
- 40:59Speaker 6: what is beginning to happen with these jobs at The
- 41:03Speaker 6: National institute For Occupational safety And.
- 41:05Speaker 3: Health But Dave Allan chow and Five Vity live brought
- 41:07Speaker 3: to you apart By Jute's Joot Security systems as a
- 41:10Speaker 3: protected By jude Dot com or follow them On.
- 41:12Speaker 4: Facebook all, Right, BRAD i know you're.
- 41:13Speaker 3: Busy before we let you, go just give me about you,
- 41:15Speaker 3: know thirty to forty five seconds or. So you're keep
- 41:17Speaker 3: a nine on the state School board meeting that's happening
- 41:19Speaker 3: at ten o'clock this.
- 41:20Speaker 4: Morning talk about, that.
- 41:22Speaker 6: You, know Somehow i'm Doing congress and The state School
- 41:24Speaker 6: board at the same. Time thank goodness for streaming. Technology,
- 41:27Speaker 6: yes The state School board has multiple issues at the
- 41:31Speaker 6: ten am. Meeting if you're out there and listener, land
- 41:33Speaker 6: you should listen to talk line at ten, am but
- 41:36Speaker 6: you could keep half an eye on the streaming of
- 41:39Speaker 6: The West Virginia state School. Board and What i'm watching
- 41:43Speaker 6: for is first public comment about the governor's executive order
- 41:49Speaker 6: saying that it needs to abide by religious exemptions to
- 41:54Speaker 6: its vaccination requirement policies in the. Schools that's getting a
- 41:59Speaker 6: pretty good amount of push, fact because the direct word
- 42:02Speaker 6: of state law says, differently it's as kids have to
- 42:05Speaker 6: have a certain number of vaccinations and the only exemption
- 42:09Speaker 6: is for medical, reasons not religious in state. Law so
- 42:14Speaker 6: that's going to GET i, think significant attention during the
- 42:16Speaker 6: public comment period of That State board. Meeting there is
- 42:19Speaker 6: also a a legal action section where the State board
- 42:27Speaker 6: will discuss sort of it's legal status of various. Things
- 42:32Speaker 6: the vaccine executive order by the governor is mentioned in
- 42:36Speaker 6: that section of the. Agenda they the board could actually
- 42:39Speaker 6: go into private session to discuss legal, Matters so that
- 42:44Speaker 6: would be of great disappointment for me Because i'm not.
- 42:46Speaker 6: Invited but those are the main things with today's state
- 42:50Speaker 6: school board, meeting AND i MEAN i think it's going
- 42:55Speaker 6: to be of significant public.
- 42:56Speaker 3: Interest, absolutely and your brands you said you're going to
- 42:59Speaker 3: be covering that in ten thousand other things a, day
- 43:01Speaker 3: along with our other members of the news team here listen,
- 43:04Speaker 3: online listen on, air listen however you, can and follow
