- 1:07SPEAKER_00: So today I wanted to just talk about goals and attacking our goals and just beliefs that sometimes keep us from moving towards our goals.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: All of us have dreams, all of us have aspirations, but not all of us feel like we can actually make our goals our reality.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Oftentimes, though, it's beliefs that hold us back.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Um I talk about limiting beliefs a lot.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: I talk about false beliefs a lot because many, many, many times it's those false beliefs, those limiting beliefs that are hanging out in our subconscious that keep us from moving forward towards the places we want to head or towards the goals that we're setting for ourselves.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: So I just wanted to talk about a few, a few beliefs that might be commonplace in terms of why or how um how you haven't been able to move forward with some of the goals that you've been setting.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: The very first one is uh not enough time.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: I hear this routinely in my work is um, you know, I have these goals, but I just don't I don't have enough time to get it done.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: You know, and the truth is that we're all very busy.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: And and most of us are overscheduled.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Um, and so when someone asks um how you're doing, it's very possible that uh the answer really is, well, I'm really busy.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Um but you know, the truth is we all have the same 24 hours in a day.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Um, it's really about our choice, our choices, our ownership of what and how we're spending our time doing, like what we're spending our time doing.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: So if we really were to slow down and ask ourselves, well, what am I really spending my time on?
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: You know, how much of my day is actually spent mindlessly scrolling on my phone?
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And I'm not, it's not judgment at all.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, nothing, there's no judgment in this at all.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: It's just to say, when we hear the belief or the excuse of there's not enough time for me to work towards this goal, what that really is is an invitation to slow down and say, let me take a look at how I actually am spending my time during my day so that I can assess what I really want to prioritize.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Because if this really is a goal of yours, maybe we need to add some, we need to add a block of time in each day to works to work towards that goal.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Another belief uh leans into what I talked about on a previous episode of imposter syndrome, but uh the another belief that keeps us from getting and working towards our goals is I don't have whatever talent or experience or skill that I need um to live into that goal.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: So uh, you know, for me personally, many times I am not an artsy person.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I have great ideas in my head.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: It the pictures that I want to paint are beautiful in my head, but I lose, I lose something between um between what's in my head and putting it on paper.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Um, so I definitely know that I've I've had this.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: I don't have the skill to do this goal that I have of creating this picture, or I don't have the skill to to, you know, this goal that I have set to maybe um cross-stitch something.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: I don't have that skill.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And what I mean when I say that is you have the talent and you have the skill that you're willing to practice and work towards.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: You know, we all didn't, we all learned how to walk.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: That wasn't a talent or skill we had to begin with.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: So if it's really a goal of yours, again, it comes back to choice.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Do I choose to work towards this thing?
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Do I choose to take small steps and allow them to each compound as I as I work on this thing, I'm gonna take that small step.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna learn that skill first, and then it's gonna compound and and weave into this broader goal that I have for myself.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Another belief or another excuse that a lot of us will have when when we don't seem to work or complete our goals that we've set for ourselves is we set a after X happens, then I'll do this, right?
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: So we set a when I get through this thing that I'm working on, then I'll be able to focus on that.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: And so it's almost an if this happens, then this happens.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: And when we get stuck in that belief cycle, um, what we're actually doing is setting ourselves up to never work on the thing that that we've set ourselves, like the goal that we've actually set for ourselves because we're always focusing on a totally different goal because we're saying that has to get done first.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: So really what we have to do is once again, comes back to ownership, comes back to choice, and say, well, if I really want that goal, what am I willing to do for that specific goal?
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Rather than saying this thing over here is gonna be, you know, my that goal is contingent upon this other thing.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: We have to challenge ourselves, is it really true that this goal that I've set for myself has to be contingent upon this other thing getting done first?
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Do I really have to um, you know, if I'm if I want to perhaps um, you know, I you know, maybe I set a goal that I want to um learn how to uh salsa dance or something.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: And I say, well, I'll learn how to salsa dance after I learn how to box.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Like those two things have nothing to do with each other.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: So which one do I really want to do?
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: And which one am I gonna set a goal for?
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And make that commitment to self and move forward with it.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: A huge, huge belief that holds us back many, not just in specific goals that we're setting, but just lots of different things, relationships as well, is the belief that I'm not good enough.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: You know, so it's really about challenging that and saying, you know, by whose standards are you measuring that you're not good enough?
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: You know, who gets to who gets to decide who you are?
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Who gets to decide uh the value of your essence?
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Only you do.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: So if the belief is I'm not good enough and that's the one holding you back from your goals, it's about challenging that belief first, making commitments to yourself, taking actions each and every day to make sure that you're honoring yourself, you're recognizing the value of yourself first and foremost.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: And as you do that, then also taking steps towards your goal and moving towards it.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And the other one, the last one that I wanted to mention is um a lot of times we just play victim, right?
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: We just say, oh, you know, so and so or that person can do it easier.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: They have the ability, they have the money, they have the the means to get that goal done.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I just don't, I don't have it.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: I don't have um, I it's just this assumption that somebody else has it easier, they're able to do it in a different way.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Um, and so you can't live into the goals.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: And so, really, what it is, it's about owning the fact that, you know, you're choosing to not move towards that goal by simply saying it's almost like default.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: It's like you're playing a tennis match and you're just defaulting out of the match and saying, well, they're just better than me, or they have it easier, so I'm just gonna let them win the match.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: If you're really setting a goal for yourself, it's about taking ownership of it and saying, I'm gonna commit to this, I'm gonna take aligned action towards it each day and work towards it.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Because the truth is limiting beliefs are are in and of themselves a very, very slippery slope.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, what happens with limiting beliefs is we start to believe them as true and then they hold us back.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: So if you think or if you've noticed that you've been setting goals for yourself and they're not, you're not moving towards them, it's a really important to slow down and ask yourself, well, what what beliefs might be holding me back?
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: What limiting beliefs might I be holding on to?
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: What narratives might I be holding on to that could be holding me back?
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: I hope this was helpful in terms of just sort of getting the the juices flowing in terms of taking a look at maybe some of those beliefs that might might truly be keeping you from living into some goals or aspirations that you have for yourself.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, this is definitely something that I talk with my clients about routinely.
