- 0:00Hello there. I'm Tyler Griffin, and this is.
- 0:03Scripture. Study insights by Scripture
- 0:07central Welcome to a brand new. Year of study.
- 0:12Now many of you may be wondering.
- 0:14Do I? Really need to study the book
- 0:17Mormon again? I've read it.
- 0:19Dozens of times. Some of you.
- 0:20Hundreds of times. Is there really anything else
- 0:23that this book can say to me that I don't already know or
- 0:26that I haven't already experienced?
- 0:30I can answer that question with with an excited yes.
- 0:36There is. So much more that God has to
- 0:39give us this year as we dive into a deep study of this book
- 0:44yet again. Just anecdotally speaking, I
- 0:48have taught professionally in the Church Educational System
- 0:51for over 28 years between seminary and institute and at
- 0:55BYU, and I can say with authenticity that I am more
- 1:00excited to jump into a study of the bookworm and now than I've
- 1:04ever been before. Why?
- 1:07Because. This book is so deep.
- 1:09It is so profound. It is so powerful that it can.
- 1:14It's a gift that just keeps on giving.
- 1:17And we have more prophetic promises surrounding this book
- 1:22than any other book I know. So I want.
- 1:26To share a. Promise with you That was given
- 1:30by President Henry B Eyring many years ago when he made a very
- 1:35simple statement. The Book of Mormon will change
- 1:38your life. I believe this.
- 1:42I've experienced this. Again and again.
- 1:44And the beauty of this book is its ability to continue to
- 1:49change your life. So a little analogy.
- 1:52That I love. Using with the scriptures is of
- 1:56windows and mirrors if you consider that these.
- 2:01Scripture pages are. Windows to the past every time
- 2:05you open them up. They reveal.
- 2:08Things you can. See people places.
- 2:11Events far away, far in the past and you can understand their
- 2:16world. And then, with the help of the
- 2:20Holy Ghost and Deep Study, you can recognize that those very
- 2:24same windows to the past become reflective.
- 2:29Mirrors to your soul today, to your life, to your situation, to
- 2:35your. Struggles and your questions.
- 2:37So what I wanted to do is we begin this new.
- 2:39Year of study. With the introduction, the title
- 2:42page and all of that those segments at the beginning of the
- 2:47Book of Mormon is, I wanted to take this.
- 2:50Approach. Of how can we help this book to
- 2:54actually change our? Life regardless.
- 2:57Of how many times we've. Read it regardless.
- 2:59Of how strong our testimony may or may not be.
- 3:02Regardless of how. Well, we know these prophets and
- 3:05their teachings, so let me begin before we dive into the title
- 3:10page with a couple of promises. There are.
- 3:16So many Apostolic and prophetic promises surrounding this book
- 3:20and a. A great exercise that you could
- 3:22go through this. Week would be.
- 3:24To search for. Promises given for reading the
- 3:28Book of Mormon. Let me give you a quick pass
- 3:31through time in October 1986, President Ezra Taft Benson, who
- 3:37we can thank for, for bringing the Book of Mormon to the
- 3:40forefront and this idea of flooding the earth with the
- 3:42bookwormon, he said. This there is a power.
- 3:46In the book which will begin to flow into your lives the moment
- 3:51you begin a serious. Study of the book, did you?
- 3:54Catch that? He didn't say.
- 3:57You need to read the book for days, weeks.
- 3:59Months, even a year before, you're going to feel a
- 4:02difference, he promised. That you'll feel that.
- 4:05Power flow. Into your lives the very moment
- 4:10you begin a serious study. And he didn't say this only
- 4:13works for the first time, readers.
- 4:16This works for everybody so. My first invitation for all of
- 4:20us, me included, is to make this year different.
- 4:24Where? We study it.
- 4:25More meaningfully, more purposefully, more
- 4:29intentionally. Here are the promises that he
- 4:33then gives. You will find greater power to
- 4:35resist temptation. You will find the power to avoid
- 4:37deception. You'll find the power to stay on
- 4:41the straight and narrow path. President Howard W Hunter said
- 4:46this in 1989. Reading it will have a profound
- 4:50effect on your life. It will expand your knowledge of
- 4:55the way God deals with man and will give you a greater desire
- 5:00to live in harmony with His gospel teachings.
- 5:05It will also provide for you a powerful testimony of Jesus.
- 5:12And our next. Prophet Gordon.
- 5:14B Hinckley. Said there will.
- 5:16Come into your heart an added measure.
- 5:19Of the Spirit of the Lord. There will come a strengthened
- 5:22resolution to walk in obedience to His commandments, and there
- 5:26will come a stronger testimony of the living reality of the Son
- 5:31of God. Then Thomas S Monson, President
- 5:35wants in April 2017. We live in a time of great
- 5:39trouble and wickedness. What will protect us from the
- 5:45sin and evil so prevalent in the world today?
- 5:49I maintain that a strong testimony of our Savior Jesus
- 5:55Christ and of His gospel will help us through to safety.
- 6:02If you're not reading the Book of Mormon each day, please do
- 6:05so. If you'll read it prayerfully
- 6:08and with a sincere desire to know the truth, the Holy Ghost
- 6:12will manifest its truth to you. If you do not have a firm
- 6:16testimony of these things, do that which is necessary to
- 6:21obtain one. It's essential for you to have
- 6:25our own testimony in these difficult times, for the
- 6:31testimonies of others will carry you only so far.
- 6:35However, once obtained, A testimony needs to be kept vital
- 6:39and alive through continued obedience to the commandments of
- 6:45God and through daily prayer and scripture study.
- 6:50We live in a beautiful day. Brothers and sisters.
- 6:53Where from my. View there are.
- 6:56More people doing more to study. The Gospel at Deeper.
- 7:01Levels than ever in the history. Of the world.
- 7:03And it's beautiful. We have more temples, more
- 7:05missionaries, more missions, more families progressing on the
- 7:10covenant path than ever before. But amidst all of this amazing
- 7:14progress and amazing these amazing blessings that God has
- 7:18given us, we each individually need to dig.
- 7:24A little deeper. And build a little more
- 7:26conversion and a little more consecrated commitment.
- 7:30To the Lord. Than ever before.
- 7:32And we can't rely on other people to do that.
- 7:35So in all of our efforts to understand the gospel by by
- 7:38watching podcasts or listening to what other?
- 7:41People have to. Say about it.
- 7:42That's wonderful. But it creates.
- 7:44Different jumping off points. They'll help get you.
- 7:47So far but. Eventually there's a jumping off
- 7:50point. You have to get off that train
- 7:52that other people are providing and you have to move forward and
- 7:57I love the beauty of these promises that as.
- 8:00We do our. Best to make a serious.
- 8:05Study of these scriptures. Especially the Book of Mormon
- 8:07This. Year we will.
- 8:09Find that. Greater power.
- 8:10Flowing into our life and now finally, President Russell M
- 8:15Nelson in October of 2017. This was his final talk given.
- 8:20Before he was. Sustained.
- 8:22As our prophet. The following April.
- 8:24He said. Something powerful happens when
- 8:27a child of God seeks to know more about him and his beloved
- 8:31Son. Nowhere are those truths taught
- 8:36more clearly and powerfully than in the Book of Mormon.
- 8:40When I think of the Book of Mormon, I think of the word
- 8:44power. The truths of the Book of Mormon
- 8:47have the power to heal, comfort, restore, succour, strengthen
- 8:57console, and cheer our souls. My dear brothers and sisters, I
- 9:05promise that as you prayerfully study the Book of Mormon every
- 9:08day, you will make better decisions every day.
- 9:15I promise that as you ponder what you study, the windows of
- 9:20heaven will open and you will receive answers to your own
- 9:24questions and direction for your own life.
- 9:31I promise that as you daily immerse yourself in the Book of
- 9:33Mormon, you can be immunized against the evils of the day,
- 9:38even the gripping plague of pornography and other mind
- 9:43numbing addictions. So based on those promises and
- 9:49countless others like them that you can find as you do your own
- 9:52study, let's dive in for a moment into some of these these
- 9:57beginning. Parts of the.
- 9:59Book of Mormon and explore them. In greater depth.
- 10:03So the title page. The title page is often seen as
- 10:09front matter, something to just. Quickly get through.
- 10:12Can I recommend to you that it's?
- 10:16According to Joseph Smith, it was written on the last leaf of
- 10:20the. Plates.
- 10:21When he was translating them. So it seems that it's written by
- 10:25the prophet Moroni. The very last.
- 10:28Thing which is a. Perfect place.
- 10:30For it being the title page because Moroni as he's finished
- 10:35the record, he can explain exactly.
- 10:38What the book? Is why it was written, how it
- 10:41was written, and more importantly, what you and I can
- 10:44gain from it. So I want you to notice two
- 10:48things #1. The first paragraph we.
- 10:52Could we could almost look at the title page as Maroni Chapter
- 10:5511 that it's scripture, it's not front matter and if you look at.
- 11:00It as Scripture. Notice the bottom of.
- 11:03The first paragraph I'll. Call it verse one.
- 11:06The very last phrase says. The interpretation thereof, by
- 11:10the gift of God. Now he's talking about being
- 11:15able to interpret. The plates.
- 11:17That he's writing in the latter. Days the Prophet.
- 11:19Joseph would translate them by the gift and.
- 11:22Power of God. Not by the knowledge of.
- 11:25The world's experts. Of the linguists.
- 11:29So the thing I wanted to point out is.
- 11:31The book was. Written as you.
- 11:33See also. In that.
- 11:35First paragraph. By way of commandment and also
- 11:39by the. Spirit of prophecy.
- 11:41And of Revelation. Think about this the the Army
- 11:46of. Prophets who wrote this book.
- 11:48Originally wrote it by way of commandment, by prophecy, and by
- 11:53revelation, Joseph Smith receives it.
- 11:56By. Revelation, he translates.
- 12:00It by the. Gift and.
- 12:01Power of God. The interpretation came by the
- 12:03gift of God, and now you and I have the book in our hands, and
- 12:10that process isn't going to change.
- 12:13The real power. Of the Book of Mormon is going
- 12:16to flow as it's given as a. Gift of God.
- 12:22Which means when I go into this book, instead of treating our
- 12:28study of the Book of Mormon as a task or a must do on our to do.
- 12:34List where? We can put a check mark next to
- 12:36it every day instead of having the book become a burden.
- 12:39To our day. What if we changed our
- 12:42perspective and said? Wow, what the prophets have
- 12:45taught. US is true that this book is a
- 12:49book of answers, not just answers to random questions or
- 12:54to other people's questions. This book has answers to my
- 13:00questions. That I have.
- 13:01Right now, this book. Has direction.
- 13:04From my life and the steps I'm taking on the covenant path
- 13:08today, this book teaches me how to connect with Jesus Christ
- 13:12better than any book I know. And I want to understand the
- 13:16Heavenly Father and His great plan of happiness for me and for
- 13:19my family. And this book is a book that is
- 13:24filled every page I can find. Symbols, types, shadows,
- 13:32teachings of attributes of. God.
- 13:35And his son. Jesus Christ.
- 13:38That I want to implement into my own life.
- 13:40I can literally find the savior and myself on every page.
- 13:46If I look for it. And if I.
- 13:48Pray for it. And if I humbly seek it now the
- 13:53second? Paragraph of the title.
- 13:55Page is beautiful because it. Gives us all of the.
- 13:59Reasons why we need a Book of Mormon.
- 14:03In my mind, this was one of Moroni's most inspired moments
- 14:06when he wrote. This.
- 14:08He gives us the reasons it's to show unto the remnant of the
- 14:10House of. Israel.
- 14:11What? Great.
- 14:12Things the Lord hath done. For their fathers.
- 14:15If I immerse in this book every day, I'll get to.
- 14:18See. Over and over again, the hand of
- 14:20God through the history of time and as I see it in.
- 14:24Their lives. Then those window panes of into
- 14:28the past will more likely become mirrors reflecting my life,
- 14:34where I can see God's hand working in my life in miraculous
- 14:39ways today. And then he goes on to say.
- 14:43That. They may know the covenants of
- 14:46the. Lord.
- 14:48That they are not. Cast off forever.
- 14:51That's a powerful. Reminder that I need every day
- 14:54that I'm not cast off forever, that I'm in a covenant
- 14:56relationship with God, and also to the convincing of the Jew and
- 15:01Gentile that. Jesus is the Christ.
- 15:05The eternal God manifesting Himself unto all nations.
- 15:10What a powerful. Way to start this book.
- 15:12This next part, called the Introduction, was added in 1920
- 15:16by the Scripture Committee, and it's got some beautiful
- 15:19descriptions as well as some powerful statements and
- 15:23invitations regarding the Book, Mormon, and.
- 15:26There's a lot. To be gained by diving in and
- 15:30reading that introduction next. We get the.
- 15:33Testimony. Of the three.
- 15:35Witnesses. The testimony of the 8 witnesses
- 15:37and then the testimony of Joseph Smith.
- 15:40Powerful witnesses that this book.
- 15:43Is true. And that was translated by the
- 15:46gift and. Power of God.
- 15:48From plates that were written anciently.
- 15:51By these prophets. And to me, the most beautiful
- 15:56thing is to notice how. God uses the law of.
- 15:59Witnesses both anciently as well as in modern times, as we've
- 16:05seen multiple witnesses of the Book of Mormon in our day.
- 16:08Prophetic witnesses and. Here you get.
- 16:12The three and the eight and the one the power to.
- 16:15Me. Is to to study these deeply and
- 16:19look at how they're similar, look at what unique
- 16:22contributions each set of those witnesses add.
- 16:26And then to pause after doing that study and to ponder and
- 16:31reflect on what is my testimony, what is my witness of the Book
- 16:36of Mormon? Because these individuals, they
- 16:39are sharing their testimony with us.
- 16:42Not so that. We sit.
- 16:43Back as spectators and watch them bear witness, but so that
- 16:48we feel inspired to seek. The Lord.
- 16:52In gaining our own witness today.
- 16:55So my final invitation to us as we dive into this New year is
- 17:03to. Start afresh, read.
- 17:07This book anew with with a newfound meekness, a newfound
- 17:15humility to say I've swam around in these pages hundreds of
- 17:20times, but I want to jump in again and begin another serious
- 17:26study of this book. This year.
- 17:28And an invitation I would give is one that I heard from Elder
- 17:32David A Bednar. A few.
- 17:34Years ago in a training for CES when he invited.
- 17:40Teachers. To, instead of giving all the
- 17:43answers to their students, invited them to send their
- 17:47students into. The scriptures.
- 17:50Seeking very specifically for answers to questions, concerns
- 17:56and troubles. That they were.
- 17:57Facing so. There are a variety of ways.
- 18:01You can do that. But perhaps it would be worth
- 18:04your effort. As you embark on this.
- 18:06Year to. Let go of what you.
- 18:11What you thought you've? Already interpreted what you
- 18:15thought you already knew. About these.
- 18:17Stories and these people and what they have to say to us
- 18:20today and to. Start afresh writing.
- 18:24Down one or two or maybe three major questions you have or?
- 18:29Concerns. That you're wrestling with or.
- 18:32Doubts that you're. Facing or decisions you're
- 18:34trying to make and you're seeking for direction.
- 18:38You're seeking for. Connection with heaven.
- 18:41Write those questions down and keep them on a sticky note or on
- 18:44a on a thought journal near your your Book of Mormon as you study
- 18:49and then dive in with those questions or that question or
- 18:53that concern on the front of your mind and make.
- 18:58A serious deep. Study of this book and my
- 19:04experience has been that as you do that.
- 19:07These stories. Come off of the page.
- 19:11These characters. Become more real.
- 19:15It's almost as if Nephi starts walking with you during the day
- 19:20as he points you. To Jesus Christ as He.
- 19:23Teaches you. Of Heavenly Father's love for
- 19:25you. It's almost as if you can hear a
- 19:28benedize testimony as he's teaching eternal truths and and
- 19:33powerful doctrines. Brothers and sisters.
- 19:37I want to begin this year with my witness added to the. 3.
- 19:43The 8 and Josephs and the millions that have been given
- 19:47since then, including the powerful prophetic witnesses
- 19:52that the Book of Mormon is another testament.
- 19:56Of Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon is.
- 19:59The Word of God. It was written by inspiration,
- 20:03it was translated by inspiration, and it will be
- 20:07unlocked by us by. Inspiration there is.
- 20:13So much God wants to tell. Us there are.
- 20:15So many answers God wants to give us.
- 20:18But we have to let. Go of some of.
- 20:21Those burdens we're. Carrying and drop them at his
- 20:24feet as we seek his will to do. A court to live our lives
- 20:29according. To to his plan for us as we walk
- 20:34with him, so as we embark on this new year.
- 20:40Hold to the rod. He's given us his.
- 20:42Words here. I know they're true, and the
- 20:46Book of Mormon will change your life as it brings you to Christ
- 20:51and teaches you of Heavenly Father and His great plan for
- 20:53our happiness. And I leave that with you in the
- 20:57sacred name. Of Jesus Christ.
- 21:00Amen. Know that you're.
- 21:02Loved. As we conclude this week's
- 21:05lesson, we'd like to introduce you to an innovative study tool
- 21:09that we have created specifically with you in mind.
- 21:12First, find the Gospel Learning app wherever you download your
- 21:15apps and create an account. There are many features
- 21:18available on this app to help deepen your study, but we want
- 21:21to show you a special section called the Gospel Explorer.
- 21:25This section can enhance your come follow me study with one of
- 21:28three doctrinal pathways. The first, on the left hand
- 21:31side, is on the purpose of the Book of Mormon.
- 21:34This branches into a study of truth with a fantastic video by
- 21:38Jared Halvorson. We encourage you to watch it.
- 21:41Another branch discusses how the Book of Mormon is another
- 21:44Testament of Jesus Christ. You may also enjoy evidences of
- 21:48the Book of Mormon in some videos off to the left.
- 21:51The Centre branch is all about witnesses and testimonies of the
- 21:54Book of Mormon. Be sure to watch Tad R
- 21:56Colister's talk on if the Book of Mormon was Man made or
- 21:59God-given, and the bottom video is entitled How the Book of
- 22:02Mormon's Complexity Shows Its Authenticity.
- 22:06The Pathway on the Right focuses on our responsibility to learn
- 22:08the Gospel individually and how to become better learners and
- 22:12teachers of the gospel. While there are so many great
- 22:14videos here, especially if you were a parent or have a teaching
