- 0:00Speaker 1: Today we are talking about an infamous creature. A creature
- 0:03Speaker 1: we all try to avoid. The Karen. They come in
- 0:06Speaker 1: many different shapes, many different sizes, and do very many
- 0:09Speaker 1: terrifying things to people in our lives. We've met them.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Maybe you've been one. But today we are going to
- 0:14Speaker 1: read stories and we are going to judge people. Are
- 0:16Speaker 1: they the Karen? First one here we have M-I-V-A for
- 0:20Speaker 1: being a Karen at dinner. Hmm. Burner account? I don't
- 0:25Speaker 1: trust anyone. We're not off to a good start. Okay. I, 21, male,
- 0:30Speaker 1: and my friends went out for my friend's birthday. We
- 0:32Speaker 1: got a few rounds of drinks, and then we ordered
- 0:35Speaker 1: our appetizers and entrees at the same time. And I
- 0:38Speaker 1: made sure to tell our server to please pace the
- 0:41Speaker 1: meal so that our apps and entrees were not served
- 0:44Speaker 1: with each other. First, it's kind of a weird thing
- 0:46Speaker 1: to say. I feel like they kind of come that
- 0:48Speaker 1: way anyways. Here we go. The apps come, and five
- 0:52Speaker 1: minutes after that, all our entrees are being served. Now,
- 0:56Speaker 1: all of us were a little frustrated, given the fact
- 0:58Speaker 1: that I told the server to pace the meal appropriately. Okay,
- 1:03Speaker 1: you're sounding like an asshole. Maybe it's the tone I'm
- 1:05Speaker 1: reading it in, but I'm feeling it. We ask that
- 1:07Speaker 1: they be taken back and that they wait for us
- 1:10Speaker 1: to finish our apps. The server takes the entrees back,
- 1:12Speaker 1: and two minutes later, a food runner now brings us
- 1:16Speaker 1: the same food we had just sent back. We politely
- 1:20Speaker 1: told him that we are still eating our appetizer, So
- 1:23Speaker 1: he brings it back to the kitchen again. Okay, now
- 1:26Speaker 1: I feel like everyone's being an NA here. So we
- 1:29Speaker 1: finish our apps and we are now ready for the entrees.
- 1:32Speaker 1: About 20 minutes go by and we have nothing. Our
- 1:36Speaker 1: server hadn't come to check on us. And at this point,
- 1:38Speaker 1: we were all ready for another round and are still hungry. Finally,
- 1:43Speaker 1: only my entree comes out. Nobody else's. And my food
- 1:47Speaker 1: is ice cold. I had wrongly assumed that my food
- 1:50Speaker 1: was sitting on the hot plate waiting for me opposed
- 1:53Speaker 1: to just sitting off to the side in the kitchen. Now,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I tried calling our server over, but she didn't come
- 1:59Speaker 1: over until everyone else got their food. I told the
- 2:02Speaker 1: server that my food was cold. And, without skipping a beat,
- 2:05Speaker 1: she responded with, verbatim, it's not cold. She hadn't felt
- 2:09Speaker 1: the plate, or the food itself, and I was taken
- 2:12Speaker 1: aback by the resentment towards me. Kitchens are crazy. Don't
- 2:16Speaker 1: send back your food, you're asking for pubes in your dish, okay?
- 2:19Speaker 1: I've worked in a kitchen. So now, I am really angry,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and I ended up calling over a manager who's being...
- 2:25Speaker 1: Very nice. We told her we hadn't gotten the chance
- 2:27Speaker 1: to order another round and she offered to buy this
- 2:30Speaker 1: round for us and take my pasta off the bill.
- 2:33Speaker 1: We told her we all wanted a refill on our margaritas. Okay.
- 2:36Speaker 1: So you've sent your food back twice. Now you want
- 2:38Speaker 1: free drinks and free food. I don't like you. I
- 2:41Speaker 1: don't like you. Okay. Servers get the worst. I can know.
- 2:46Speaker 1: 10 minutes later, our server brings us five little shots
- 2:49Speaker 1: of tequila and said, my manager wanted me to tell
- 2:52Speaker 1: you that your next round is on us. Now I
- 2:55Speaker 1: was confused because I thought we were getting margs, but whatever.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Free alcohol is free alcohol. But of course, one of
- 3:01Speaker 1: my friend goes, oh, geez, these were supposed to be margaritas.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Our server looks at us and straight up says, you
- 3:07Speaker 1: know what? I'm done with you guys and walks away.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Good baby. Don't let anybody treat you like that. We
- 3:14Speaker 1: see the manager. So we ask for our check because
- 3:17Speaker 1: our server was full on avoiding us at this point.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Our server then comes to our table, hands us our check,
- 3:22Speaker 1: is very nice and happy like nothing ever happened. Try
- 3:26Speaker 1: to get that tip. I said, wait, I thought you
- 3:28Speaker 1: were done with us. And she replies, oh yeah, I forgot,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and walks away. This is just like beyond the energy here.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I'm ready for it. The manager ends up cashing us out,
- 3:37Speaker 1: and I was so angry in the heat of the
- 3:39Speaker 1: moment that I stiffed our server out of a tip,
- 3:42Speaker 1: which I would never do. I'm not sure, but I
- 3:45Speaker 1: felt in that it was the only thing I could
- 3:47Speaker 1: do from the disrespect I had gotten. If we were
- 3:50Speaker 1: a pain in the ass, I get it, but the
- 3:52Speaker 1: attitude was straight up unprofessional. Am I an a-hole for
- 3:56Speaker 1: acting this way in this situation? Also, Crazy, check this out.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I have to confess something. I have been obsessed with
- 4:01Speaker 1: this game, and it is called Midas Merge. I play
- 4:04Speaker 1: it way more than I should probably admit, but it
- 4:07Speaker 1: has become a part of my daily ritual. It is
- 4:09Speaker 1: just my cozy escape, and every time I play, I
- 4:12Speaker 1: end up unlocking something even cuter than before. And now,
- 4:16Speaker 1: drum roll, there is something completely new to explore. The
- 4:20Speaker 1: Firefly Valley. The new garden literally feels like stepping into
- 4:24Speaker 1: a dream. Soft flowing lights, magical mist, and the most
- 4:28Speaker 1: enchanting little creatures. And they look so cute, like they
- 4:31Speaker 1: just floated out of a fantasy story. And beyond all that,
- 4:35Speaker 1: the game is free, ad-free, and even works offline, which
- 4:39Speaker 1: means I can play it literally anywhere, anytime. Also, there's
- 4:43Speaker 1: a free gift for you. The first 200 people that
- 4:45Speaker 1: download the game using my link will get an exclusive
- 4:48Speaker 1: lantern goat from Firefly Valley. It's rare, it glows, it's adorable,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and yes, it even has my name on it. So
- 4:56Speaker 1: make sure that you grab your phone, merge some magic,
- 4:59Speaker 1: and come play with me in Midas Merge. Let's see
- 5:01Speaker 1: who can get to the new garden first. But honestly,
- 5:04Speaker 1: the journey is just as fun. All right, back to
- 5:07Speaker 1: the video. I'm busy. Welcome back. Let's read the edits
- 5:10Speaker 1: before we get into it, okay? Edits. I live in
- 5:13Speaker 1: the US. This restaurant is an upscale chain restaurant. I
- 5:16Speaker 1: won't name the place, but there's such desserts as the
- 5:18Speaker 1: cheesecake come out as fast as you think it's from
- 5:20Speaker 1: a factory. Okay, we're talking about Cheesecake Factory. Let's go
- 5:23Speaker 1: to the comments before I have my own opinion here. Oh,
- 5:26Speaker 1: it's been locked, the thread. Let's read it. You are
- 5:28Speaker 1: an a-hole. The server doesn't get to decide when the
- 5:30Speaker 1: food is made and delivered. Your demands are a little
- 5:32Speaker 1: bit ridiculous. Yes. As a server, not the a-hole. You
- 5:36Speaker 1: told her to wait on the entrees. If she was worried,
- 5:38Speaker 1: she would forget to put in the entrees She should
- 5:41Speaker 1: have asked to take those orders when she brought your appetizers.
- 5:43Speaker 1: So here's the interesting thing. If you've ever been to
- 5:45Speaker 1: a cheesecake factory, it's busy. It's almost always busy. But
- 5:49Speaker 1: as someone who is a server, you can put in
- 5:51Speaker 1: an appetizer order and then put in an entree order
- 5:53Speaker 1: and then you would just... consolidate those checks at the
- 5:56Speaker 1: end and put them together as a meal. So I
- 5:58Speaker 1: think you didn't handle it right, but I think also
- 6:01Speaker 1: your server didn't, but I would rate you kind of
- 6:03Speaker 1: the A for how you kind of did deal with things.
- 6:05Speaker 1: This has been rated the A-hole. I'm going to kind
- 6:08Speaker 1: of agree with that on this one. Just stop. Stop
- 6:10Speaker 1: being one. Ooh, next one. Am I the A for
- 6:13Speaker 1: being a Karen in a comedy club? This always gets me.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I'm going to be so curious here. This happened in
- 6:19Speaker 1: 2023 and people who witness it still think I was
- 6:22Speaker 1: in the wrong, but I don't see it that way.
- 6:24Speaker 1: But let's let Reddit decide. My 32 female at the
- 6:28Speaker 1: time and my 29 male at the time had just
- 6:31Speaker 1: started to work as a host in a brand new
- 6:33Speaker 1: comedy club. So he invited me to come. I ended
- 6:36Speaker 1: up being the only paying customer there. Everyone else there
- 6:39Speaker 1: beside my friend was either a comedian or a comedian's partner.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Everything was fine until one comedian during his performance said,
- 6:46Speaker 1: started interacting with me. He asked me to clap my hands,
- 6:49Speaker 1: so I did. He goes, every time I tell a joke,
- 6:52Speaker 1: would you clap for me, sweetheart? I laughed and said no.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I thought he would be cool about it, but he
- 6:58Speaker 1: seemed really uncomfortable and said, well, feminist women just like
- 7:03Speaker 1: to say no, right? I felt that was a bit misogynistic,
- 7:06Speaker 1: but I let it go. Delicate line between comedy and
- 7:10Speaker 1: bad stuff. You know, we look at certain comedians that
- 7:12Speaker 1: have really been like roasted and then you look at
- 7:13Speaker 1: other ones that aren't as famous that didn't. It's weird.
- 7:15Speaker 1: It's weird what we choose to get so angry about
- 7:17Speaker 1: when it comes to comedy because there's a lot delicate
- 7:19Speaker 1: freaking line. The comedian continued his performance and told a
- 7:23Speaker 1: joke about, ooh, S-H, S-A, I'm guessing. I don't remember
- 7:27Speaker 1: exactly how it went, but it was something that the
- 7:30Speaker 1: best place to self-massage is on public transport. I felt
- 7:34Speaker 1: really uncomfortable about that joke. He told it three times.
- 7:38Speaker 1: No one laughed at any of them. Okay, why would
- 7:40Speaker 1: you tell the same joke three times? If you're bombing,
- 7:42Speaker 1: you're bombing. Leave the stage. Later, he goes, I hope
- 7:44Speaker 1: you're all having a good time as we're here to
- 7:46Speaker 1: try new material. So if you guys have any feedback,
- 7:49Speaker 1: it would be welcome. I looked at my friend beside
- 7:51Speaker 1: me and whispered, well, he should stop doing S.A. jokes.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I honestly thought the comedian wouldn't hear my comment, but oh.
- 8:00Speaker 1: He did. Comedian shouted in a very angry voice, I'm
- 8:03Speaker 1: going to tell the jokes that I want to. Then
- 8:05Speaker 1: he started to hyperventilate for a while. Oh, so this
- 8:08Speaker 1: isn't being funny. Now he's freaking out. When we stopped,
- 8:10Speaker 1: he said, sorry everyone, but when people try to censor us,
- 8:13Speaker 1: I get very mad. After that, he went on and
- 8:15Speaker 1: on about how difficult it is to be a comedian,
- 8:17Speaker 1: how his jokes are a way to help society, and
- 8:20Speaker 1: how some stupid people just don't get it. When he
- 8:23Speaker 1: used the word stupid, I got up to smoke and
- 8:25Speaker 1: calm down because I was feeling kind of attacked. I understand.
- 8:28Speaker 1: I walked to the hallway and there was a camera
- 8:29Speaker 1: filming and I got caught in the footage, apparently. When
- 8:32Speaker 1: I reached the smoking area, I realized I forgot my lighter.
- 8:35Speaker 1: So I went back to my seat to grab it
- 8:37Speaker 1: and I was caught in the footage. After the cigarette,
- 8:39Speaker 1: I felt calm and the comedian had ended his performance,
- 8:42Speaker 1: so I decided to let it go and enjoy the
- 8:43Speaker 1: rest of the evening. I had fun, I met new people,
- 8:46Speaker 1: and everyone told me that I should have kept my
- 8:48Speaker 1: mouth shut. Two years later, my friend told me that
- 8:51Speaker 1: the comedian now tells a joke about how a Karen
- 8:53Speaker 1: tried to humiliate him over a silly joke and ruined
- 8:56Speaker 1: his footages. I found that amusing. And I'm flattered that
- 8:59Speaker 1: I'm his muse for creating new material. My friend still
- 9:01Speaker 1: thinks that I'm in the wrong, but honestly, I don't
- 9:03Speaker 1: see it. So Reddit, am I the A? I don't
- 9:05Speaker 1: think so. I don't think you are. He shouldn't have
- 9:07Speaker 1: hyperventilated and went off on a tangent. Comedians, you know,
- 9:11Speaker 1: are the most stable and the most unstable people that
- 9:13Speaker 1: I've ever met in my life. They're some of my
- 9:14Speaker 1: favorite and some of my least favorite people in the
- 9:16Speaker 1: whole entire world. This one was rated not the A-hole,
- 9:18Speaker 1: which I completely agree. Cop comment here. Him. We're doing material,
- 9:22Speaker 1: so any feedback would be welcome. You. You shouldn't do
- 9:26Speaker 1: that one joke. Him. I didn't mean negative feedback. You're
- 9:30Speaker 1: censoring me. Also, don't walk back and forth in front
- 9:32Speaker 1: of the camera. I sat up right where everybody walks
- 9:35Speaker 1: back and forth to go out. That literally, like, I
- 9:37Speaker 1: think kind of puts that all together and is a
- 9:39Speaker 1: perfect summary. Uh, not the Karen. Not the Karen. Ooh,
- 9:44Speaker 1: I love parent ones. Is this a mom? Is this
- 9:46Speaker 1: a Karen? Let's see. Am I the A for flipping
- 9:48Speaker 1: out on my son's school after they lied to him
- 9:51Speaker 1: about donation prizes? My son is in fourth grade. School
- 9:55Speaker 1: is only open on Mondays. The rest of the week,
- 9:57Speaker 1: he is home with me. Where are you? Oh, is
- 10:00Speaker 1: this COVID time? Let's see. It's five years ago. It was.
- 10:03Speaker 1: They don't do virtual learning during the rest of the week.
- 10:05Speaker 1: No Zoom calls are made. No teacher actually checks in.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Homework at home is not to be sent back to
- 10:10Speaker 1: the school. Instead, they get a participation grade the following
- 10:15Speaker 1: week if they tell their teacher they completed it. It's
- 10:18Speaker 1: backwards and your students aren't being graded for the work
- 10:21Speaker 1: they actually do. Okay, okay. Every Monday, we get a
- 10:24Speaker 1: new flyer in the mail asking for donations. Last week,
- 10:28Speaker 1: we got a flyer that said to send out 20
- 10:31Speaker 1: emails to individuals and ask them for donations with the
- 10:34Speaker 1: promises of prizes for participation. They also had other prizes
- 10:39Speaker 1: on this flyer. Basically, the more people that donate using
- 10:43Speaker 1: your name, the bigger prize you get. This is taking
- 10:45Speaker 1: me back to the jump heart for life. I don't
- 10:48Speaker 1: know if this is just a Canadian thing. You would
- 10:49Speaker 1: like get basketballs and sweaters and stuff for doing stuff
- 10:52Speaker 1: for the Heart Foundation. My son wanted the headphone prize.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Nowhere on the flyer did it say how many donations
- 10:58Speaker 1: were needed. I called the school to ask and they
- 11:00Speaker 1: said 12. I sent out 20 emails. 14 people donated.
- 11:04Speaker 1: The donation list was emailed to the school with his
- 11:07Speaker 1: student ID where we could pick up the prizes this
- 11:09Speaker 1: past Monday. My son was losing his mind. He was
- 11:12Speaker 1: so excited because he got the 12 donations needed for headphones.
- 11:16Speaker 1: We walk in and they proceed to tell my son
- 11:18Speaker 1: that he did not qualify for the prize because in
- 11:21Speaker 1: order to be eligible, you need 20 donations. Apparently, the
- 11:25Speaker 1: prizes for donations started counting up after you receive 20.
- 11:30Speaker 1: They turn damn near every student away, not just my kid. Ooh,
- 11:34Speaker 1: this doesn't feel good. So I sent the boy with
- 11:37Speaker 1: his father and pulled the teacher and principal aside to
- 11:40Speaker 1: let them know that what I thought they were doing
- 11:41Speaker 1: was messed up, and they got these kids' hopes up
- 11:44Speaker 1: for absolutely nothing, and that what they accomplished was destroying
- 11:47Speaker 1: the children's spirits by lying to their faces. I then
- 11:50Speaker 1: told them that I was told by the secretary that
- 11:52Speaker 1: he only needed 12 donations for those headphones. They said,
- 11:56Speaker 1: Sorry you feel that way, and this is just how
- 11:58Speaker 1: things are right now due to COVID. So I responded with, oh,
- 12:03Speaker 1: so lying to students and breaking their spirits is okay
- 12:06Speaker 1: because of COVID? Failing to provide virtual learning for the
- 12:09Speaker 1: rest of the week like other schools is okay because
- 12:13Speaker 1: of COVID? Asking for donations when these kids are here
- 12:16Speaker 1: only once a week is okay too? I walked out. Well,
- 12:19Speaker 1: my son got headphones in the mail today with a
- 12:21Speaker 1: note from the superintendent that said, I'm very sorry for
- 12:24Speaker 1: the actions of the school system and the confusion formed
- 12:26Speaker 1: around the donation drive. We are trying to work with
- 12:29Speaker 1: the families, not turn them away. Please accept this as
- 12:31Speaker 1: an apology. My son is over the moon. My husband
- 12:34Speaker 1: says that I was being a Karen and that I
- 12:35Speaker 1: should have just dropped it because it teaches our son
- 12:37Speaker 1: that life isn't fair. And now I look like an
- 12:39Speaker 1: AH helicopter to the parents. Am I the A? I
- 12:43Speaker 1: don't think so. So this was rated not the A.
- 12:46Speaker 1: I think that this story is a big old fat
- 12:50Speaker 1: story of miscommunication. I think that secretary shouldn't have been
- 12:53Speaker 1: giving out information that she didn't know to be true.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Definitely should have double checked. I don't think you're an a-hole.
- 12:58Speaker 1: You stood up for what you believed in. I don't
- 13:00Speaker 1: think anyone is an a-hole here. I think the world
- 13:02Speaker 1: was an absolute mess in 2020 and thank God we're
- 13:06Speaker 1: not there anymore. Can you believe it's five years ago?
- 13:08Speaker 1: Five years ago. What? Ooh, this is a Karen story
- 13:12Speaker 1: that happened at my work. So I am a server
- 13:14Speaker 1: in a restaurant. Today, we were slightly busy, just like
- 13:17Speaker 1: any other day. I'm the manager, so I try to
- 13:19Speaker 1: help all the servers with their stuff. One of the
- 13:21Speaker 1: servers had their table's food come up, so I took
- 13:23Speaker 1: the first few plates out for her. Okay, that's nice.
- 13:26Speaker 1: It was for a lady and her husband, her kid,
- 13:29Speaker 1: and her mother. She had short-dyed Karen hairdo, so I
- 13:33Speaker 1: just got a bad vibe from her. I love how, like...
- 13:36Speaker 1: You see them and you just, you know. Why do
- 13:38Speaker 1: they get the same haircut? A lot of them. They said,
- 13:40Speaker 1: we need ketchup. I said, okay, one second. So I
- 13:42Speaker 1: went back to get their other plates and grab the ketchup.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And when I came back, this bee is standing in
- 13:47Speaker 1: the server station, helping herself to catch up and stuff.
- 13:51Speaker 1: She didn't even give me a chance to get it
- 13:52Speaker 1: for her. I was like, um, you're not allowed back here.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And she very nastily said, well, I just went back there.
- 13:58Speaker 1: And I said, well, don't do it again. And by
- 14:00Speaker 1: this time she was back at her table and was
- 14:02Speaker 1: talking loudly in front of the other patrons. she said
- 14:04Speaker 1: it was that's fine i'll just talk to the manager
- 14:07Speaker 1: and i said i'm the manager it felt so good
- 14:10Speaker 1: she shut up and didn't say another word the whole
- 14:12Speaker 1: time that they were there she also stiffed the waitress
- 14:15Speaker 1: which i felt really bad about oh and later on
- 14:17Speaker 1: her husband came in and talked to the owner and
- 14:19Speaker 1: said i was really rude and really embarrassed her sometimes
- 14:23Speaker 1: when people are in a bad mood they just go
- 14:24Speaker 1: to a restaurant obviously they're like having a bad day
- 14:26Speaker 1: they don't want to cook and then they just they
- 14:28Speaker 1: poop on your on servers i'm a really good tipper
- 14:30Speaker 1: i don't know why i just need to say that
- 14:32Speaker 1: If I ever come to your restaurant, stand up for me.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Everyone should work in the service industry for at least
- 14:37Speaker 1: three to six months at minimum. No, you know what?
- 14:40Speaker 1: Everybody should work in customer service. It makes you a
- 14:42Speaker 1: better person. It really does. Ooh, am I the Karen? The,
- 14:47Speaker 1: that's worse. So a little backstory. I, 21 female, am
- 14:52Speaker 1: a Midwestern transplant to the deep South of Georgia. Oh,
- 14:56Speaker 1: I wanna go to Georgia. I just wanna go to
- 14:58Speaker 1: the vampire. I wanna go to Mystic Falls. easy transition
- 15:03Speaker 1: hi i want to talk to you really quick about
- 15:04Speaker 1: this hi this is a book that i wrote yep
- 15:06Speaker 1: it's coming out in january hard covered sprayed edges with
- 15:09Speaker 1: blood it's gonna be so absolutely freaking gorgeous and amazing
- 15:12Speaker 1: i have three dreams in my whole life i have
- 15:14Speaker 1: three dreams okay these are selfish i get it one
- 15:17Speaker 1: have a baby got it oh my god i love
- 15:19Speaker 1: it next thing i really want a screenplay of mine
- 15:21Speaker 1: to be turned into a movie wonder what my number
- 15:23Speaker 1: one dream is I want to be on the New
- 15:24Speaker 1: York bestseller list. That's all I want to do. This
- 15:26Speaker 1: book was published before HarperCollins saw it. They said, let's
- 15:29Speaker 1: fix it up. Let's put it out again. Let's do it.
- 15:31Speaker 1: So I get that's going to be hard, but it
- 15:33Speaker 1: is different. There's some more sexy things in here. But
- 15:35Speaker 1: if you ever do one thing for me, it would
- 15:38Speaker 1: be pre-ordering this book. Put it into Google. You can
- 15:40Speaker 1: find it. I have links everywhere. If you want to
- 15:42Speaker 1: make my dreams come true, please go call it. back
- 15:46Speaker 1: to now i am not of the midwestern vein that
- 15:50Speaker 1: inherited canadian niceness rather than the nyc meets redneck region
- 15:55Speaker 1: where we quite frankly well no one gives a shit
- 15:58Speaker 1: as such i am quite blunt and very different from
- 16:01Speaker 1: the southern women around here i try not to be
- 16:03Speaker 1: rude but it comes out that way from time to
- 16:05Speaker 1: time when i don't say it with a smile i
- 16:07Speaker 1: know i met so many of you I have developed
- 16:10Speaker 1: some skills to fit in better and can usually slap
- 16:13Speaker 1: a I'm not mad, but fix it grin on when
- 16:16Speaker 1: I need to. I am in a restaurant with a
- 16:18Speaker 1: friend who consistently makes jokes that I am a Karen.
- 16:21Speaker 1: So at said restaurant, we are having lunch and it
- 16:24Speaker 1: is a slow day for this place. Now, I normally
- 16:27Speaker 1: have zero issues with food coming out slow. It happens.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I get it. But being one of four tables on
- 16:33Speaker 1: an uncharacteristically slow day full of staff, I shouldn't expect
- 16:37Speaker 1: to wait 45 minutes for two sandwiches that seemed that
- 16:40Speaker 1: they would be done for quite some time. The food
- 16:42Speaker 1: was cold, soggy, unseasoned, and their new portion control ideas
- 16:46Speaker 1: were taken way too far. I realized that staff working
- 16:49Speaker 1: flat doesn't care to do things right that day and
- 16:52Speaker 1: didn't even bother sending it back immediately. Because I knew
- 16:55Speaker 1: that there would be no point. I want to pay
- 16:56Speaker 1: for my food that I've pushed away and go. Okay.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Waitress returns and asks, everything tasting good? To which I
- 17:04Speaker 1: reply with an aforementioned grin. No, it really kind of sucked.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Can we just get the check? Because she asked, she
- 17:11Speaker 1: got a little flustered and went to get the manager.
- 17:13Speaker 1: To my protest, I didn't really care. It was one
- 17:16Speaker 1: meal and I still got to hang out with my
- 17:18Speaker 1: friend who was embarrassed on the other side of the
- 17:20Speaker 1: table because I seemed to have offended his polite sensibilities.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Waitress and manager return. He asked what the problem was
- 17:27Speaker 1: and I tell him all the things I mentioned because again,
- 17:29Speaker 1: he asked i wasn't angry i never raised my boys
- 17:32Speaker 1: i never cursed i just didn't apologize for not liking
- 17:35Speaker 1: the food which here is customary he rolled his eyes
- 17:38Speaker 1: so far back into his head i'm pretty convinced he
- 17:40Speaker 1: saw the secret to life that's a funny line i
- 17:43Speaker 1: might use that i might use that and told me
- 17:45Speaker 1: that they would comp it if i wanted i said
- 17:47Speaker 1: no because the food is usually decent and i didn't
- 17:49Speaker 1: want to be hated and my friend asked then why
- 17:52Speaker 1: make a fuss Because they asked! And still, every time
- 17:55Speaker 1: we go somewhere, he asks me not to be a Karen.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Mind you, there's been other instances of such things happening
- 18:01Speaker 1: in different contexts. One such brief example is when I
- 18:04Speaker 1: made a guy step away from his own birthday party
- 18:06Speaker 1: because his car was blocking me in and I wanted
- 18:09Speaker 1: to go home. Did my grin, but didn't mention that
- 18:12Speaker 1: making him step away was my fault because he parks
- 18:14Speaker 1: like shit. Friend didn't like that one either and thought
- 18:17Speaker 1: it was important for me to mention and provide context
- 18:19Speaker 1: to my Karen-ness. Am I the a-hole? Okay, I'm gonna
- 18:22Speaker 1: be honest. This was rated a-hole. I don't agree. They asked,
- 18:25Speaker 1: you said, what's wrong with that? We can't be that
- 18:27Speaker 1: soft as a culture, can we? This person said that
- 18:30Speaker 1: they are. I'm a blunt New Yorker and saying no,
- 18:33Speaker 1: it kind of sucks still strikes me as insanely rude. Okay,
- 18:35Speaker 1: I get it. Wording was a little off. You don't
- 18:37Speaker 1: have to apologize to be polite, but you could honestly
- 18:40Speaker 1: say it's pretty soggy and doesn't taste as good as
- 18:42Speaker 1: the food usually does. I think we're choosing bits and
- 18:44Speaker 1: bytes here. My aunt is a Karen and has the,
- 18:47Speaker 1: it's just how I am personality. It was cool when
- 18:49Speaker 1: I was 10 to 12 and I thought, oh, she's
- 18:50Speaker 1: just bossy, important woman. But now that I'm an adult,
- 18:53Speaker 1: I cringe because it's not cool. It's old and makes
- 18:55Speaker 1: her seem like she has no tact or control. I've
- 18:57Speaker 1: never complained about food. I'm going to be honest, but
- 18:59Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't find this one that bad.
- 19:01Speaker 1: You put the server in a really awkward position by
- 19:02Speaker 1: complaining about the food and not letting them do anything
- 19:05Speaker 1: to address it. Okay, I see that. I don't know
- 19:07Speaker 1: if I'm on the same path. I don't know. Am
- 19:10Speaker 1: I an A for telling my new neighbors that I
- 19:12Speaker 1: have been trapped in a basement for weeks after she
- 19:15Speaker 1: told me not to check my mailbox on weekends? What?
- 19:20Speaker 1: I have been away since Thursday, house sitting for my mom,
- 19:23Speaker 1: and it is currently Sunday afternoon where I live. Here,
- 19:26Speaker 1: mail does not deliver on weekends. They only do that
- 19:28Speaker 1: Monday to Friday, which means I had two days worth
- 19:31Speaker 1: of mail filling up my mailbox. My 30-something-year-old neighbors moved
- 19:36Speaker 1: in on Friday when I wasn't here, and she was
- 19:39Speaker 1: in her front yard when I was collecting my mail.
- 19:41Speaker 1: She goes, don't check your mailbox on weekends. They don't
- 19:44Speaker 1: deliver on weekends. So I don't check it, in a
- 19:47Speaker 1: rude Karen voice, if you know what I mean. already
- 19:50Speaker 1: I know we are not going to have a great
- 19:52Speaker 1: neighbor relationship and I am hung over and can't be
- 19:55Speaker 1: bothered dealing with her shit and I said I know
- 19:58Speaker 1: it's just I've been kidnapped in the basement for a
- 20:00Speaker 1: week so I need to check my mailbox I don't
- 20:03Speaker 1: have a basement barely anyone does in this country She
- 20:05Speaker 1: seemed shocked. It was an obvious joke with my overly
- 20:09Speaker 1: sarcastic tone. Then we both went inside and that was that.
- 20:12Speaker 1: About 25 minutes later, the police knocked at my door
- 20:15Speaker 1: thinking I was held captive in my basement, which I
- 20:18Speaker 1: don't have. So I explained to them what I had
- 20:21Speaker 1: actually said and they laughed and left. Just before I
- 20:24Speaker 1: was putting my rubbish out in the bin, she came
- 20:26Speaker 1: down and called me the C word for making her
- 20:28Speaker 1: think I was kidnapped. What? You were outside. That's a
- 20:33Speaker 1: funny one. Not DA. This is hilarious. There's an edit.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Thank you for your judgment, everyone. I honestly thought it
- 20:38Speaker 1: was going to have a different outcome because I felt
- 20:39Speaker 1: horrible after the police arrived. Like I said, it was
- 20:42Speaker 1: incredibly wrong of me. No, it's not. No, it's not.
- 20:44Speaker 1: This person said some people need to mind their own
- 20:46Speaker 1: damn business. Who cares when you check your mail? Completely agree. Also,
- 20:49Speaker 1: some people just don't understand sarcasm. At least she cared
- 20:52Speaker 1: enough to call the cops for you. You know what?
- 20:53Speaker 1: You got that. That's the one thing. If there's Karen,
- 20:55Speaker 1: if there's things going down in the neighborhood, they got you.
- 20:58Speaker 1: They got you so hard. M-I-V-A for refusing to let
- 21:01Speaker 1: my Karen neighbor use my pool after she demanded I
- 21:04Speaker 1: follow her pool rules. So I, 34, male, live in
- 21:09Speaker 1: a suburban neighborhood with a decent-sized backyard and pool. I
- 21:12Speaker 1: have always been friendly with my neighbors, including... Karen, mid-40s female,
- 21:16Speaker 1: who moved in next door about a year ago. She
- 21:18Speaker 1: seemed nice at first, but as time went on, she
- 21:21Speaker 1: started to show her true colors. Over the summer, Karen
- 21:25Speaker 1: started coming over with her kids, asking if they could
- 21:27Speaker 1: use the pool. I didn't mind, because I was usually
- 21:30Speaker 1: outside anyways, and the kids seemed to really enjoy it.
- 21:32Speaker 1: But soon things got weird. Karen began showing up unannounced,
- 21:35Speaker 1: sometimes even when I wasn't home, and I caught her
- 21:38Speaker 1: using the pool without my permission. Don't like it. Don't
- 21:40Speaker 1: like it. Well, it's kind of like your responsibility if
- 21:42Speaker 1: somebody drowns, right? One day, I came home to find
- 21:44Speaker 1: Karen and several of her friends having a full-on pool
- 21:48Speaker 1: party in my backyard, complete with snacks, music, and pool floats.
- 21:52Speaker 1: I confronted her. Oh, I hate it. I hate it.
- 21:54Speaker 1: She acted like it was no big deal, saying, oh,
- 21:56Speaker 1: you weren't using it, so I figured it was fine. No, no, no, no!
- 21:59Speaker 1: I don't like it. I told her politely but firmly
- 22:01Speaker 1: that she needed to ask before coming over and that
- 22:03Speaker 1: I was not comfortable with her just assuming she could
- 22:06Speaker 1: use the pool whenever Karen seemed annoyed but agreed to
- 22:09Speaker 1: follow the rules then last week she took things to
- 22:12Speaker 1: a whole new level Karen knocked on my door with
- 22:15Speaker 1: a typed list of pool rules that she wanted me
- 22:19Speaker 1: to follow here's the rules no swimming after 5 p.m
- 22:22Speaker 1: because our kids have a strict bedtime no loud music
- 22:24Speaker 1: when her family is outside and mandatory weekend access for
- 22:28Speaker 1: her and her kids but only for their exclusive exclusive
- 22:31Speaker 1: use ma'am ma'am what i thought she was joking at
- 22:36Speaker 1: first but she was dead serious i laughed and told
- 22:38Speaker 1: her that there was no way i was following any
- 22:41Speaker 1: of her rules for my pool duh karen got angry
- 22:43Speaker 1: and called me selfish saying that i was ruining the
- 22:46Speaker 1: neighborhood spirit and being unfair to the kids they're not
- 22:49Speaker 1: your kids they're not his kids i don't like this
- 22:51Speaker 1: now she's been spreading rumors to the neighbors that i'm
- 22:53Speaker 1: a bad guy for not sharing the pool some of
- 22:55Speaker 1: the neighbors have even said that i should let it
- 22:57Speaker 1: go and avoid the drama but i feel like this
- 22:59Speaker 1: is insane it's my pool And she's acting like she
- 23:02Speaker 1: owns it. Am I the A for refusing to let
- 23:04Speaker 1: Karen and her kids use my pool? There's some updates.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Just let everyone know my backyard fence does not have
- 23:09Speaker 1: a lot. I've taken your advice and I purchased one
- 23:11Speaker 1: from the store. I'll be installing it tomorrow. For those
- 23:13Speaker 1: suggesting I get a camera, I already have one, but
- 23:15Speaker 1: it's not pointing directly at the pool. Hey everyone, update
- 23:17Speaker 1: on the situation. Thank you for the advice. It really
- 23:19Speaker 1: helped me see I wasn't overreacting. Amen. So I went
- 23:22Speaker 1: ahead and installed a keypad lock on my back fence.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I figured it would solve the problem without needing another
- 23:27Speaker 1: awkward convo with Karen. Plus, you were all right about
- 23:29Speaker 1: the liability stuff. I really don't want to deal with
- 23:31Speaker 1: any potential fallout if someone gets hurt using my pool.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Of course. So Karen has noticed the lock pretty much immediately.
- 23:38Speaker 1: She was at my door, furious, saying I was locking
- 23:40Speaker 1: out the neighborhood kids and treating her family like criminals.
- 23:43Speaker 1: She went on about how I was being dramatic and
- 23:45Speaker 1: why I couldn't just let them use it like before.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I told them straight up that I wanted some privacy
- 23:48Speaker 1: and control over who was using my pool. After all,
- 23:51Speaker 1: it's my backyard, not a community park. She rolled her
- 23:54Speaker 1: eyes and said I was being selfish. Honestly, I feel
- 23:56Speaker 1: a lot better with the lock on now. Love it.
- 23:58Speaker 1: You're cool. Yo problem. Yo life. Yo drama. Curious. Today
- 24:03Speaker 1: in the comments, I want you to drop below what
- 24:05Speaker 1: level Karen you are. We're going to go between one
- 24:07Speaker 1: and five. How many Karen strong are you? I would
- 24:09Speaker 1: say from one to five. I'm maybe a two Karen.
- 24:11Speaker 1: I'm going to be honest. She's come out before, but
- 24:14Speaker 1: not as Karen-y as you would think. I have road rage. No,
- 24:16Speaker 1: I don't. I'm okay. Lying. Anyways, I love you guys.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I hope that you are having a beautiful day and
- 24:22Speaker 1: make sure that you come watch my videos every time
- 24:23Speaker 1: I post. My dream is to be a YouTuber and
- 24:26Speaker 1: on the New York Best Seller list and have a
- 24:27Speaker 1: movie and have a baby. Okay, until next time. Love you. Bye.
