- 0:35Here's the deal on today, starting pitcher for the Jays.
- 0:38Starting pitcher for Toronto in the first game of a four game set.
- 0:41Hopefully a four game set as Pat Hinken, a young right-handed pitcher with above-arish fastball.
- 0:46He's one of those guys who's going to cross him the fastball up in the zone,
- 0:49and he's got what we used to call a drop ball on little leagues.
- 0:52Curve ball's more of a downer. He throws very few changes.
- 0:55Basically he's going to throw a four-seam fastball up in the zone.
- 0:58You're going to see a lot of fly ball outs off him.
- 1:00He's pitching well. He's going to change planes with a curve ball.
- 1:03And everyone's going to throw you a two-seam fastball when he's behind the camera.
- 1:06Basically two-pitch pitchers. Very competitive and a good athlete.
- 1:11That's the deal on Hinken. Now here's the starting lineup as brought to you by Nissan.
- 1:15Nissan, it's time to expect more from a car.
- 1:18The Blue Jays, well, this is not a lineup that you'll recognize.
- 1:21Leading off is a shortstop, Dick Schofield.
- 1:24Roberto Alomar is the second baseman.
- 1:25He'll bat second, hitting 308, eight home runs and 38 rebbeys.
- 1:29Paul Molitor continues the role. He's a DH.
- 1:32He'll bat third, hitting 344, 14 home runs and 75 runs batted in.
- 1:38Joe Carter, the right fielder, will bat clean up.
- 1:40270, 26 home runs and 102 runs batted in.
- 1:44John O'Rourke's at first base. He'll bat fifth.
- 1:46293, 12 home runs and 67 rebbes.
- 1:49Mike Huff gets the start in center field.
- 1:51He'll bat in the number six position, 302, three home runs and 24 rebbes.
- 1:55Devon White is out with a strained left Achilles and a sore right knee.
- 2:00Darnell Cole is the left fielder, will bat seventh.
- 2:02Batting eighth, the third baseman, Ed Sprague.
- 2:04And Pat Borders, the catcher, will bat ninth.
- 2:08For the Yankees, first place in 70 and 42, seven games.
- 2:11Ahead of the Orioles, Luis Polonia will lead off and play left.
- 2:14Batting second, the third baseman, Wade Boggs.
- 2:17Paul O'Neill's in right field, he'll bat third, hitting 364, 21 home runs, 83 runs batted in.
- 2:24Danny Tartabal's back in the lineup. He missed two games with a sore left elbow.
- 2:27He'll be the D.H.L. back clean up.
- 2:29Batting fifth, the Yankee captain and their first baseman, Donald Arthur Mattingly.
- 2:34305, six home runs, 51 runs batted in.
- 2:38Mike Stanley's the catcher, he'll bat in the number six hole, hitting 302, 17 home runs and 57 runs batted in.
- 2:45Bernie Williams in center field will bat seventh.
- 2:48Williams hitting 291, 12 home runs and 57 runs batted in.
- 2:52Mike Gallego's the shortstop, he'll bat eight, hitting 241, six home runs and 41 runs batted in.
- 2:59And Pat Kelly's at second base, batting ninth.
- 3:01Kelly hitting 278, three home runs and 39 runs batted in.
- 3:06Pat Henkin for the Jays, 13 and 8, 3.20.
- 3:10Melito Perez for the Yankees, 9 and 4, 4.03.
- 3:15We're ready for baseball here at the stadium.
- 3:17We'll have that for you right after this.

- 4:19That's 1-800-9-Yanks-9.
- 4:23The Yankees have taken the field.
- 4:27Melito Perez is about to begin his warmups and I'll give you the Yankees defensively.
- 4:32Luis Palon is in left, Bernie Williams in center and Danny Tartable, check that, Paul O'Neill, not Danny Tartable, is over and right.
- 4:40In the infield, Wade Boggs at third, Mike Gallego at shortstop.
- 4:44Patrick Kelly is at second and Donald or Arthur Mattingly, the Yankee captain, is at first.
- 4:49And as we broke here on the pregame yesterday, this could be, I'll say it will be, could be the last game he plays, especially if it's a long strike.
- 4:59He said that he would give serious consideration to retiring.
- 5:05We'll see.
- 5:07Mike Stanley is behind the plate and Melito Perez is on the mound.
- 5:11Hey, taste the difference, drink Snapple Sport, the awesome sports drink from Snapple.
- 5:16It's the delicious way to recharge and replenish lost nutrients.
- 5:19Snapple Sport, it's America's thirst cruncher only from Snapple and made from the best stuff on earth.
- 5:27The umpires, Matt Winans is behind the plate, Rick Reeds at first, Larry McCormick at second, and Jim Evans is over third.
- 5:38Well, the bags are packed in the Yankee clubhouse, unfortunately, and they are ready to bolt at the end of this game.
- 5:45Same thing with the Blue Jays, although they'll just leave the stuff that they have in the clubhouse and they'll head home to points unknown.
- 5:53Most of the Yankees have reservations to go to their hometowns tomorrow.
- 5:58Buck Showalter will be here tomorrow, hoping his team shows up.
- 6:02There will supposedly be a meeting between Fear and Rabbits today.
- 6:06Hopefully it can be worked out in the 11th hour.
- 6:08It doesn't look good, but let's keep our fingers firmly crossed and hope that we will be with you again tomorrow evening.
- 6:14Right now, let's sit back and enjoy what could be the last baseball game of 1994 for Yankee fans.
- 6:20If it is so, well, it's been a pretty good year.
- 6:22Dick Schofield digs in, Melito Perez is on the mound, and stepping in behind the microphone for the play-by-play, John Sterling.
- 6:31John?
- 6:32Hi, thank you, Michael, and once again, good afternoon, everyone.
- 6:34It's been a very good year, but very incomplete, unfulfilled for Yankee fans, and I might add Yankee broadcasters.
- 6:42This team has been in first place since sometime in May.
- 6:47Dick Schofield leads off, right-hand hitter, and Perez throws a breaking ball strike through his slider from the count, 0-1-1.
- 6:54Normally Devon White, the leadoff hitter, and a peerless one, but White is out with a pulled hamstring.
- 7:000-1 to Schofield, a little ground ball to the right side, Kelly feels.
- 7:04Mattingly gets the first, and the throw is in time, one away.
- 7:07Mattingly started to go for it, then New Kelly would get there, and a retry to the first, so Schofield is out 4-3.
- 7:14Schofield at 2-56, four homers and 32 RBIs before the ground ball.
- 7:19The Toronto lineup is really down now with Devon White out to four players, and they are coming up now.
- 7:27Alomar, Molitor, Carter, and Olrud.
- 7:32But the troops in back of those guys have not hit well this year, and Toronto has not scored a lot of runs.
- 7:37Alomar takes a strike.
- 7:40Robbie having another great year, hitting a 3-0-8, eight homers, 38 RBIs, and 19 stolen bases.
- 7:49He's a switch hitter batting left.
- 7:52Better lefty hitter than righty hitter, usually.
- 7:55Molito deals 0-1, and the check swing grounder right back to the mound.
- 7:59Molito throws out Alomar, and they're two away.
- 8:03Could Alomar walk any slower to first base? What a disgrace.
- 8:07I know he tapped it back to the mound, and the likelihood of him beating it out is small.
- 8:13But to sit there and walk back to first base, let's put some effort forth here.
- 8:18People paid to get into this game.
- 8:20Maybe they're on strike already.
- 8:21Well, he is. That's disgraceful.
- 8:24Here's Paul Molito having a sensational year amidst Toronto's terrible season.
- 8:30Toronto, the two-time defending world champion, six games under 500.
- 8:35But it hasn't affected Molito, one of the game's great hitters, and I think a Hall of Famer.
- 8:40He's hitting 3-44, 14 homers, 75 RBIs, and you want to hear a stat that'll knock your socks off.
- 8:48Molito has good speed, but he's up there in his 30s.
- 8:53The right-hand hitter takes a pitch high, has tried to steal 20 times.
- 8:57He's been successful 20 times.
- 9:02What a year. The 1-0 is bounced to third.
- 9:06Boggs feels. Fire is to Mattingly, scooped up by Donnie on a low throw.
- 9:11And Perez has a 1-2-3 pretty play by Mattingly.
- 9:14Three up, three down at the end of a half.
- 9:17The Blue Jays nothing, and the Yankees coming about.
- 9:20It's a matter of pride. It's a matter of trust.
- 9:25We're your Ford dealer. You can count on us.
- 9:30Look at what we've done. Look at what we've won.

- 9:58That's manufacturer's suggested retail price with package 321M.
- 10:02Title and taxes extra.
- 10:04Ford Escort. Four choices, one low price.
- 10:07See your Tri-State quality Ford dealer today.
- 10:13Right-hander Pat Henkin, the number one pitcher by far on the Toronto staff.
- 10:18He's had a terrific year. 13-8 and he already had 3.20.
- 10:22And in the American League, circa 1994, 3.20 is brilliant.
- 10:2723 games in starts. 169 innings, 151 hits.
- 10:3218 less hits.
- 10:34That inning's pitch and tremendous control.
- 10:37He's walked 56, about three per nine innings.
- 10:41Three on the nose.
- 10:42He struck on 143, so a much better than two-to-one ratio.
- 10:47Maybe a two-and-a-half to one ratio.
- 10:51And the league hitting just 239. All of his numbers are great.
- 10:55A right-hander who throws extremely hard.
- 10:58A lot of high fastballs and a breaking ball.
- 11:00The pitch to Bologna is fouled off high fastball.
- 11:03On the count of one.
- 11:05Boy, you ought to listen and I'll tell you,
- 11:09the batting averages are the top of the Yankee order.
- 11:12I mean, is there any wonder that the Yankees, whose pitching is pretty good
- 11:16and their defense is very good,
- 11:20are in first place by seven games and have been in first place
- 11:23since sometime in May.
- 11:26Bologna, the leadoff hitter at 3.11, one homer and 36 RBIs.
- 11:32And the next two hitters are hitting 3.41 and 3.64.
- 11:38And Danny Jarble, the fourth hitter, doesn't hit for a high average.
- 11:41The pitch to Bologna is a strike, but certainly has the power numbers.
- 11:45And then after that, there are two more 300 hitters and a 290 hitter.
- 11:52The 0-2 to Bologna fouled off high fastball.
- 11:57So when the Yankees come up, of their first seven men,
- 12:00in effect six are 300 or more, much more, some of them.
- 12:06And one guy hitting in the two fifties, but with great power.
- 12:09It'll be an 0-2 to Bologna.
- 12:11The breaking ball is inside on the count of one and two.
- 12:15Basically that's what Henkin shows you.
- 12:19A good live fastball and a big curveball.
- 12:23It'll be a 1-2. Cut on him.
- 12:26A fastball Bologna couldn't hit.
- 12:28Now he couldn't hit it, but if he had hit it, he would have popped it up.
- 12:32In a way, and only in the variety of pitches, not the way they pitch,
- 12:37but in the pitches they throw, Henkin is very much like a right-handed Sid Fernandez.
- 12:43Bologna swung at a pitch.
- 12:45He almost had a jump to swing at, so there's one away.
- 12:48And here's Bog, but Henkin throws hard, so you don't have a lot of time to make up your mind.
- 12:54Bogs is hitting at 3.41.
- 12:5611 homers and 54 RBIs, and he takes a pitch inside one and 0.
- 13:05Why is there somebody warming in the Yankee pulpin?
- 13:08It's a left-hander.
- 13:11I think it's Abbott.
- 13:13The pitch to Bogs is bounced to short.
- 13:16Schofield throws out Bogs, and there are two away.
- 13:23I get the feeling that this is almost like the last game,
- 13:26because there's a possibility they would use other players,
- 13:30or use pitchers, maybe starters in a relief role,
- 13:33which would be dangerous because if the strike is averted,
- 13:38well then what happens if you use Scott Kamenicki, who's supposed to pitch tomorrow, who pitches tomorrow?
- 13:44Is there any chance it would be averted?
- 13:46Any chance that fear and ravage on behalf of their representatives would say,
- 13:52come on, let's settle this thing, it's easy.
- 13:54The pitch to O'Neill is a breaking ball.
- 13:57Hey, they overshift. O'Neill's a guy who goes to left field a lot.
- 14:00They overshift on him.
- 14:02Schofield's shortstop is on the first base side a second.
- 14:05The third baseman Sprague plays shortstop, and the pitch is a strike.
- 14:09O'Neill at 364, 21 homers, 83 RBIs.
- 14:14I think there's a pretty good shift on him, because a lot of his hits go exactly where Schofield is standing.
- 14:19There's a strike, and the count is one and two.
- 14:22Two outs, no one on, bottom the first, no score.
- 14:25And you know a lot of his hits go kind of where Sprague is standing,
- 14:29between second and third.
- 14:32Pitch is chopped to the right side.
- 14:34Alomar feels on the outfield grass, Wurl's throws in time, and that'll do it.
- 14:38The Yankees three up and three down.
- 14:40We have played one inning at the stadium, Toronto nothing, the Yankees nothing.
- 14:44We go to the second.
- 14:55And here's Joe Carter to lead it off, the CBS Evening News.
- 14:59They'll talk about the strike tonight with Dan Rather and Connie Chung,
- 15:02where your world comes together.
- 15:05Carter having his normal good year.
- 15:10This guy is Mr. Consistency. His name is Leon Consistency.
- 15:15He gets 100 RBIs every year, this year no exception.
- 15:18Hitting a 270 pitch outside, 26 homers, 102 RBIs.
- 15:23We can look this up, but to show you how consistent he's been,
- 15:28I would say in the last eight years Carter has had less than 100 RBIs once.
- 15:33The 1-0, cut on a miss, and I think that year he had something like 96 or 97 RBIs.
- 15:39He's a great run producer.
- 15:41Now the streak started in 86 with Cleveland when he drove in 121,
- 15:45and the only time he hasn't driven over 100, 1988, he had 98.
- 15:49The pitch has looped a short, caught by Gallego, one away, split finger.
- 15:53How many years would that be, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, eight years.
- 16:02And one year he had 97, 98.
- 16:05That's pretty close, huh?
- 16:06And he knew there was a strike coming.
- 16:08He knew the date, and he's driven in 25 runs in his last 29 games to reach 100.
- 16:15He has 102 and about 50 games to go.
- 16:18Here's John Olrud takes inside.
- 16:20Olrud is not having the kind of year I'm sure that he or Toronto thought he would have,
- 16:25not a bad year, but after last year, hitting a 293, 12 homers, 67 RBIs,
- 16:31he lines up base at the right field.
- 16:34There's the first base run of the game, a clean line drive single by Olrud to right.
- 16:39Olrud does not run, not run a lick like the others.
- 16:44Here's Mike Huff.
- 16:45Huff is filling in in center field today.
- 16:47Having a pretty good year, he's a right-hand hitter, a line drive type hitter,
- 16:52but he's hitting a 302, three homers, and 24 RBIs.
- 16:56And he's been the hottest blue jays since the All-Star break, John.
- 16:5818 hits in 50 at bats, that's 360.
- 17:02One thing though, Toronto has had Carter and White in the outfield of course,
- 17:07in right and center pitch is outside, but Mike, they have tried 800 guys in left field.
- 17:13And they're big names, there's one thing to brag about your big names in the minors,
- 17:17but it doesn't mean they're going to hit in the majors.
- 17:19That's why I usually don't listen.
- 17:21I'm really from Missouri when it comes to rookies.
- 17:23The 1-0 way outside, the count to an 0 fastball.
- 17:27Carlos Delgado down, Sean Green down, they tried them both in left field.
- 17:33Remember the April that Delgado had?
- 17:36Oh, unbelievable.
- 17:40One on, one out, top of the second, no score pitch is low on the count, 3-0.
- 17:45Let me give you Melito's numbers.
- 17:47He's 9-4 with an ERA of 4.03.
- 17:5021 games in starts, 145 innings, 129 hits, so 16 less hits than innings pitch, that's very good.
- 17:5853 walks, about 3.5 for 9 innings, pretty good.
- 18:02A 2-1 ratio walks to strikeouts, there's a strike, exactly what you want.
- 18:0753 walks, 105 Ks, and the league hitting just 239 often.
- 18:12Melito's been, oh no, a very good pitcher.
- 18:16Just a step away from being excellent.
- 18:19It'll be a 3-1 to Huff.
- 18:21The pitch is fouled away for Space High.
- 18:25Well, Mike, she loves the guy who gets her hot pretzels.
- 18:29Keeps his cool and is into leather.
- 18:32English leather, the official cologne of the New York Yankees baseball radio network, available at a pathmark near you.
- 18:43You know, the 3-2 to Huff.
- 18:46High, fastball, ball four.
- 18:49So Toronto has something building here in the second, a one-out single by O'Rourke, followed by a walk to Huff.
- 18:55And here's Darnell Coles.
- 19:00Coles at just 210, four homers and 13 RBI's.
- 19:10Well, this is kind of a strange-looking lineup for a two-time world championship team.
- 19:15This is not a great lineup.
- 19:19Oh, and down to four hitters in their lineup.
- 19:21The pitch to Coles has a strike.
- 19:24And that hasn't even been their problem.
- 19:26Problem's been pitching.
- 19:27Yeah.
- 19:28They don't score a lot of runs, though, either. They're way down.
- 19:30I mean, you wouldn't think that Toronto down in runs, but this year, yes.
- 19:34And their pitching has been, hey, that's why they're six games under 500.
- 19:40Baseball is the truest sport. The O'Rourke cut out a miss.
- 19:43You can't fool anyone in baseball because you play every day.
- 19:46So if you don't hit and score runs, they'll find it out.
- 19:49And if you don't have pitching, they really will find that out.
- 19:52You play every day.
- 19:53You have to do it on spirit, hustle, drive, determination, guts.
- 19:58You have to do it on talent. You don't have talent, you can't win.
- 20:01The O2 is a split or low, one or two.
- 20:05Scooter.
- 20:08The Phil Rizzotto story, a 45-minute video collectible that every Yankee fan will treasure.
- 20:13The tape covers the Scooter from Miss San Laudas in Brooklyn
- 20:16up to his recent election into the Hall of Fame.
- 20:19The cost, only $24.95.
- 20:22The 1-2, shy 3, fastball outside corner.
- 20:26Kroc Cole's looking.
- 20:28Now to order with a credit card, call 1-800-9-YANKS-9.
- 20:32What's that number again?
- 20:331-800-9-YANKS-9.
- 20:35So if it's 1-800, it's toll free.
- 20:37Yes.
- 20:38Great.
- 20:39And of course, the executive producer is Joe Villalon.
- 20:42I didn't tell you last night that...
- 20:44No, Joe and I worked together on a Yankee magazine show for a couple of years.
- 20:47That was a great show.
- 20:48We changed his name, of course.
- 20:50Joe, leave me alone.
- 20:56Here's Ed Sprague.
- 20:57He's hitting a 2-38, 10 homers and 41 RBIs.
- 21:01There are Ducks on the Bond, Ole Root at second, and Huff at first.
- 21:07Two men out, and Melito deals fastball high 1-0.
- 21:10I think it was Cheers, Mash, and then Yankee magazine with John Sterling
- 21:15in terms of just great TV programs.
- 21:17I understand that, and I think in the ratings as well.
- 21:19I think it reflected.
- 21:24The 1-0.
- 21:25It's hit in the air to Sennavia.
- 21:27Bernie Williams back, away back in deep center.
- 21:30It is over his head and off the very top of the wall.
- 21:33Two runs will score.
- 21:35Sprague on his way to third, and he'll be there with a triple.
- 21:38A two-run triple for Sprague that just missed being a three-run home run.
- 21:44He hit the top of the wall, 408 feet away.
- 21:47And Toronto has a 2-0 lead.
- 21:49You know, Bernie went back on the ball like he was going to catch it.
- 21:52And then all of a sudden he must have realized, uh-oh, I'm in trouble.
- 21:56And the ball hit off the very top of the center field wall.
- 21:59I think he gave up on the ball, John.
- 22:01I think he thought it was really going to be out.
- 22:03I don't think he really had any choice.
- 22:05I don't know.
- 22:06He did turn the wrong way, first of all.
- 22:08He was looking over his right shoulder, and the ball was really over his left shoulder.
- 22:12And then he finally turned around to watch the ball go over the wall,
- 22:15and it hit near the top of the wall.
- 22:17Boy, right near.
- 22:18That borders the catchers, and he takes a strike.
- 22:21Borders at 253, three homers, 26 RBI's.
- 22:25So the Yanks, who hit a little slump, which figures after how hot they were,
- 22:30are behind here, 2-0.
- 22:33Hicken, there's a check-swing tap right back to the mound.
- 22:36Perez throws to first in time.
- 22:39However, Toronto gets two runs on two hits.
- 22:42The two-run triple by Sprague.
- 22:44They leave one at the end of an inning and a half, 2-0 Toronto.
- 22:47Well, the Yankees trail by a deuce on the two-run triple.
- 22:55Hey, listen, they're very fortunate.
- 22:57That ball was at the dead center, just to the right field side of the 408 foot sign,
- 23:03and hit the very top of the wall.
- 23:05That didn't miss by an inch or so, being a three-run home run.
- 23:08So Yankees should be thankful for that.
- 23:11Danny Chartable is in the lineup after missing a game or two, hitting at 257, 18 homers, 64 RBI's.
- 23:19He swings and lines one to left center field.
- 23:21On the run is Coles. He makes the catch, and there is one away.
- 23:25Danny hit it hard, and Coles ran it down in left center.
- 23:28Hit it too hard, really. It hung up there and allowed Coles to make the catch.
- 23:32Well, we go to the bottom of the second, and that means it's time for the members only.
- 23:36Mattingly getting a good hand here as he's announced.
- 23:39In the American League, only three other games won this afternoon.
- 23:42Milwaukee, Detroit, 115 start, but it's raining, so they held that up when it started.
- 23:47Wegman against Moore tonight.
- 23:48Boston at Baltimore, Sealy against Rhodes, and on the coast, Seattle at Oakland.
- 23:53Johnson against Darling.
- 23:56Mattingly takes a strike.
- 23:58Donnie at 305, six homers and 51 RBI's.
- 24:02That could be the last game of the season.
- 24:05And follows it away on the count of one, two.
- 24:07Seattle at Oakland, 10-05. That's the latest starting game.
- 24:10And when that game is over, there's no settlement.
- 24:12That's when the strike begins.
- 24:14In the National League, the Dodgers are leading.
- 24:16Cincinnati won nothing bottom of the fourth.
- 24:18Tim Wallach is 23rd. Martinez against Rio.
- 24:21This one will start in about five minutes.
- 24:23San Diego at Houston. Hamilton against Swindell.
- 24:27The 0-2 has hit up the middle and through to center.
- 24:29Bielbrough base hit for Mattingly.
- 24:32So both left-hand hitting first baseman batting fifth single.
- 24:39With one out in the second inning to put their first men on board.
- 24:44And here's Mike Stanley having just a marvelous year.
- 24:48Hitting at 302, 17 homers and 57 RBI's.
- 24:535-05 start at Mile High, Atlanta at Colorado.
- 24:56Maddox going for win number 16 against Painter.
- 25:00And then the rest 7-35 starts the Mets at Philadelphia.
- 25:03Hockamay against Valenzuela.
- 25:05Montreal at Pittsburgh. Henry against Smith.
- 25:07And St. Louis at Florida. Tewksbury against Rapp.
- 25:11Strike on the inside to Stanley.
- 25:14And that is the members only.
- 25:17Stop by Sturm today for a look at this year's men's fashions from the aforementioned members only.
- 25:22A wide array of the ultimate in today's outerwear and sportswear.
- 25:25They're all designed for maximum comfort without sacrificing style.
- 25:29And remember, Stearns and members only urge you to do clothes and not drugs.
- 25:35Henkin deals. Stanley takes a pitch up high.
- 25:39And the count one and one.
- 25:52Mike and I looking in the upper deck to our right.
- 25:55That should be like the Juneau and Blayton first base and there are let's say little league groups there.
- 26:00The one-one foul all the way.
- 26:03And they have their let's say leaders or scout masters, whatever, leading them in kind of unified clapping.
- 26:12Terrific. They're so into it. What a great age.
- 26:15What a terrific age in your baseball fan. That's the best.
- 26:18And they have all their little blue t-shirts and they're all looking like and they're all clapping the same way.
- 26:24It's almost like a shark in front of them.
- 26:26Well, I'll tell you why I was laughing. It was an old Red Skelton movie that I have in my racks.
- 26:31It'll be a one-two to Stanley. Swung on and hit in the air to right field and deep.
- 26:36Carter back. He's there on the track near the wall, makes the catch and there are two ways. Stanley just missed.
- 26:43You want to get a copy of this in one of those stores that have old movies.
- 26:47Show it for your kids. They love it. It's called the Fuller Brushman.
- 26:52There's a little skit with Skelton and Campfire girls who are clapping in a certain way to douse out a fire.
- 26:59It reminded me of. So two way. And here is Bernie Williams at 291, 12 homers and 57 RBIs.
- 27:08Toronto leads at two nothing, bottom of the second. Maddingly at first, two men retired.
- 27:13Bernie batting left handed against the right handed Henkin.
- 27:16How about this crowd, John?
- 27:19Good job, huh? It's a marvelous crowd for a week of the Yankees.
- 27:24Have average in the last nine home games. They have average a little over 40.
- 27:28I think it's 363,000 for nine games. What would you say today? Maybe 30?
- 27:33Yeah, definitely 30, 35 right in that era.
- 27:36An excellent crowd and the owners walking away from all this.
- 27:41What did they get in Colorado last night? 60, 70?
- 27:44That'll be a one-oh to Bernie. It's foul back.
- 27:48What about the players though? Yes, I'm not taking sides.
- 27:52I want them to compromise. I know a way to do it and so do you.
- 27:57And the sad thing is, so do they.
- 28:01They know how to compromise. It's right there in front of them.
- 28:05Give both parties something.
- 28:09Give the players free agency sooner and give back arbitration.
- 28:12That'll get it done.
- 28:13Immediately, tomorrow at nine, pitch outside.
- 28:19If I read the small print, Atlanta played in Colorado last night.
- 28:25They drew 65,000 people.
- 28:29The people are telling baseball, here's our money, please take it.
- 28:37It'll be a two-one to Bernie.
- 28:39Henk and Eels, it's bounced or short. Schofield will take it himself.
- 28:43Steps on the bag and that ends the inning.
- 28:45No runs, one hit and one left.
- 28:47At the end of two, Toronto two and the Yankees nothing.
- 28:50Dick Schofield.
- 28:53Dick Schofield leads off for Toronto.
- 28:55We go to the top of the third, two-nothing Blue Jays.
- 28:58The pitch fouled away.
- 29:00Fastball.
- 29:02Another count, 0-1.
- 29:042-2-0 for Toronto, 0-1-0 for the Yanks.
- 29:07Two runs, tripled by Ed Sprague.
- 29:09The difference, and here with a play-by-play as we hit the third, is Michael Kay.
- 29:13Thank you, John.
- 29:14Home plate umpire Matt Winans calls time.
- 29:16Schofield stepped out.
- 29:20Boggs even with the bag at third, about 10 feet off the line, the 0-1.
- 29:24Swung on ground ball up the middle, base it into center field.
- 29:27Bernie Williams will field and he'll flip it back into the infield.
- 29:30So Schofield on with a leadoff single.
- 29:33Schofield in the leadoff position for the Blue Jays because Devon White.
- 29:36With a strained left Achilles and sore right and he's missed a couple of games.
- 29:42And he's sitting out again this afternoon.
- 29:44He's with the ball club.
- 29:45He's not on the DL, but he's not in the starting lineup.
- 29:49Here's Roberto Alomar, who really dogged it in the first inning.
- 29:53He hit a tap or back to the mound and decided to walk the first base.
- 29:56I guess he's having his own work stoppage.
- 30:03The pitch to Alomar is a little bit low, want to know.
- 30:06Hitting 308, eight home runs and 38 runs batted in against the Yankees career.
- 30:11Outstanding numbers, 335, four home runs and 25 rebbeys.
- 30:15He's so brilliantly talented that when you see him dogged down the first base like that,
- 30:19it gets somewhat annoying.
- 30:23Perez fires over the first and Schofield back.
- 30:27This is a guy who many people say,
- 30:32might be the best player in baseball, even better than Ken Griffey Jr.
- 30:36in terms of the things that he can do.
- 30:38And then to see him jog down the first base, well why?
- 30:42Here's the 1-0, low again, 2-0.
- 30:45Melito is missed with two splitters.
- 30:48The lower deck here at Yankee Stadium completely full,
- 30:51as is the second deck in the third deck while the wings are empty.
- 30:55But good crowds, really from the foul pole on to the other foul pole in foul territory.
- 31:00As always, the right field bleachers packed.
- 31:05The 2-0, there's a strike with a fastball on the outside corner, 2-1.
- 31:10Sometimes at the top, Melito into throwing the fastball when he's struggling with the splitter.
- 31:15And when he had that six game winning streak, the reason he had it
- 31:18was he was featuring the fastball early in the game
- 31:22and getting ahead in the count. He seemed to always be ahead, 0-2, 1-2,
- 31:26and then he would go to the splitter later in the game and later in the count.
- 31:29Perez fires the first, and Mattingly has to make a diving stop
- 31:33to save an error to Perez, and that's why you hear the crowd applauding,
- 31:39recognizing an outstanding play. Had a dive to his right,
- 31:42went down to the ground, rolled over and had the baseball.
- 31:48Schofield leads, the 2-1, fastball high, 3-1.
- 31:54So Perez getting himself into trouble.
- 31:57If you watch Alomar, then you've got Molitor, Carter, and O'Rourke coming up.
- 32:01Yankees lead the American League East by seven games.
- 32:14The pitch to Alomar swung on and fell back to the screen, 3-2.
- 32:18The Blue Jays come in 17 games behind the Yankees,
- 32:22and it would take a little bit more than a miracle.
- 32:25Really on the next level for miracle for the Blue Jays,
- 32:29if there isn't a strike tomorrow, to catch the Yankees.
- 32:3317 games behind on August 11th, not quite doable.
- 32:39The 3-2 swung on and popped foul behind the plate into the upper deck.
- 32:43That's 18 games in the loss column.
- 32:46So the eighties are 70 and 42, and the Blue Jays,
- 32:49two-time defending champions, are 54 and 60.
- 32:54The Red Sox right behind the Jays at 54 and 61,
- 32:5717 and a half games behind the Yankees,
- 33:00and the Tigers are at 53 and 61, 18 games off the pace.
- 33:08Here's the 3-2, swung on and lined to right field.
- 33:11O'Neill is right there. He makes the play.
- 33:14Schofield plays it halfway. He'll jog back to first.
- 33:17So Alomar is now 0-2.
- 33:19The Blue Jays' big problem this year, if you look at it,
- 33:22they've had a lot of problems. This is a big one.
- 33:24They can't win on the road.
- 33:26They're 21 and 34, and at the Sky Dome, they're 33 and 26.
- 33:30They've also struggled tremendously against Eastern teams.
- 33:34Within their division, they're 12 and 22.
- 33:37They're 24 and 25 against the Central,
- 33:40and 18 and 13 against the West.
- 33:43Now compare the Yankees.
- 33:45The Yankees are 33 and 23 at home, 37 and 19 on the road.
- 33:49They're 19 and 13 against the East, 25 and 14 against the Central,
- 33:54and 26 and 15 against the West.
- 33:57Here's Molitor.
- 33:59It's the Molitor. It's a fastball up and away 1-0.
- 34:02He grounded to third. That was in the first inning.
- 34:05He's 0-1.
- 34:08Buck Showalter said that if he had to show a kid how to hit,
- 34:11show kid films, this is the guy he would show.
- 34:15He said this is the best pure hitter in baseball,
- 34:18just in terms of mechanics and the way to do it at the plate.
- 34:21The 1-0, fastball high 2-0.
- 34:24He's hitting 3-43 at the age of 37.
- 34:27John mentioned 20 of 20 in stolen base attempts.
- 34:3014 home runs and 75 runs batted in.
- 34:33The fact that he is the DH for the Blue Jays
- 34:36will probably keep him active for a very long time.
- 34:39He has not lost a thing.
- 34:41If anything, he's gotten better.
- 34:43The 2-0 swung on and fouled away on the right side.
- 34:47And that will make the first row of the upper deck
- 34:50down the right field line.
- 34:53The reason he's considered such a good hitter
- 34:56doesn't stride, doesn't have a big looping swing.
- 35:00As the ball is approaching, his bat is still
- 35:03resting on his right shoulder.
- 35:06And he's got such quick hands, it's all with the hands.
- 35:09It's impossible to fool Paul Molitor
- 35:12because he doesn't take a stride.
- 35:14He just hits from the crouch and swings.
- 35:17And there he swings and lines one into center field.
- 35:19Bernie Williams heading over to right center.
- 35:21Schofield, who was running, has to hustle back to first.
- 35:24And Williams makes a nice throw to Mattingly.
- 35:26But Schofield slides back in ahead of the throw.
- 35:29So two away.
- 35:32Today's nationwide insurance agent of the game
- 35:35is Larry Montobe at 27-17.
- 35:38Check that, 22-17,
- 35:40Hillside Avenue, New Hyde Park, New York.
- 35:44Molitor just hit a bullet to right center.
- 35:46And Bernie Williams ran it down.
- 35:48Here's Joe Carter.
- 35:49Carter lined out to Mike Gallego in the second inning.
- 35:54He's 0-1. He taps the top of his helmet,
- 35:56which means he wants Larry McCoy, the second-base umpire,
- 35:59to move from the shortstop side to the second-base side.
- 36:02And the umpire complies.
- 36:05So two down, one on. The Jays lead 2-0 top of the third.
- 36:08The pitch to Carter is a breaking ball strike
- 36:10on the outside corner, 0-1.
- 36:12Carter's at 2-70, 26 home runs, and 102 runs batted in.
- 36:18They play Carter to pull.
- 36:22Bernie Williams shaded toward left center field.
- 36:24Polonia deep and close to the line and left.
- 36:27Fastball is inside, 1-1.
- 36:29Follow the Yankees year-round in the pages of Yankees Magazine.

- 36:44That's 1-800-9-Yanks-9.
- 36:47Perez fires the first in Schofield back
- 36:49ahead of Mattingly's sweep tag.
- 36:53If there's a game tomorrow, it'll be tomorrow evening.
- 36:55Our pregame would be at 6.45, game time at 7.05.
- 36:59Scott Kamenicki, 8-6, 3.76 against Dave Stewart,
- 37:037-8, 5.87.
- 37:06Runner goes, the 1-1 is high.
- 37:08The throw to second is not in time.
- 37:10Schofield got a great jump.
- 37:12Stolen base for Dick Schofield.
- 37:15The throw by Stanley was high, but that was stolen off Perez.
- 37:19That was a great pitch for Stanley to try to throw him out.
- 37:22Fastball, so he was coming out of his crouch.
- 37:24Fastball high, and he fired high to Pat Kelly covering,
- 37:28and Schofield was on the bag by the time Kelly came down
- 37:31to tag.
- 37:33So now runner in scoring position for Carter.
- 37:36Jay's already lead 2-0.
- 37:38Schofield with a big lead at second, the 2-1.
- 37:41Fastball up and in, 3-1.
- 37:44Against the Yankees lifetime, well, Carter's almost had a
- 37:47career year, 26 home runs and 80 runs batted in.
- 37:54I remember a couple years he was with San Diego.
- 37:57Take those years away.
- 37:593-1 swung on him, blooped in the right field.
- 38:01Mattingly going back into foul territory, makes the catch
- 38:03backhanded to end the inning.
- 38:05Nice play by Don Mattingly, a quick reaction,
- 38:08and he makes the grab.
- 38:10So for the Blue Jays, no runs, one hit, no errors, and one
- 38:13left at the end of 2-1, Toronto to the Yankees, nothing.
- 38:16Well, the people at the scoreboard, very clever.
- 38:23The song, Should I Stay or Should I Go?
- 38:26I think the final song today should be Don't Leave Me
- 38:33Like That.
- 38:35We'll see what they play.
- 38:36Here's Mike Gallego, pillied off Yankees trail, 2-0.
- 38:39We're in the bottom of the third inning.
- 38:41And the bottom of the third inning at home, well, that
- 38:43means it's time for the Delta home run contest inning.
- 38:46The Yankees hit a home run, John Perry of East Strasburg,
- 38:49Pennsylvania.
- 38:50The first pitch is swung on and fouled back.
- 38:52Can win a pair of round trip Delta airline tickets to
- 38:55Dallas, Texas.
- 38:57And the Yankees hit a grand slam this inning.
- 38:59Well, John can win a European Delta Dream vacation for 2.
- 39:02Good luck to John.
- 39:03First home run wins, the 0-1.
- 39:05Breaking fits, low and away, 1-1.
- 39:08So the Yankees certainly have their work cut out for them
- 39:11because Henkin has just a 3.20 ERA, and Yankees trail,
- 39:152-0, the 1-1.
- 39:16Swung on and lined right at Alomar.
- 39:18He was situated perfectly, one away.
- 39:25Here's Pat Kelly.
- 39:27Kelly hitting 2.78, three home runs and 39 runs.
- 39:30And Diego was at 2.41, six home runs and 41 rubies.
- 39:36Blue Jays 2-3 and 0, and the Yankees 0-1 and 0.
- 39:39Bottom of the third, one out, nobody on.
- 39:43Sprague even with the bag at third, about eight feet off
- 39:46the line.
- 39:47It looks like Kelly is low, 1-0.
- 39:51Kelly said he plans to stay in the New York area for a while,
- 39:54even if there is a strike.
- 39:56He might stop down for the talk show at one time.
- 39:58The 1-0, swung on and fouled back.
- 40:011-1, we mentioned that if there isn't a strike,
- 40:04we'll be here tomorrow evening with the Yankees against the
- 40:06Jays if there is a strike.
- 40:10Well, John and I will be down at Mickey Mantle's restaurant
- 40:15to begin a talk show, which would be on for the most part
- 40:18whenever the Yankees were going to play, 7-10,
- 40:21the first three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday night,
- 40:237-10.
- 40:25The 1-1, a bunt down the third baseline, a beauty,
- 40:28charging his spraigue and he eats it.
- 40:31Pat Kelly with a perfect bunt.
- 40:33Sprague knew that he had to barehand the ball.
- 40:36He tried to and bobbled, and Kelly was way past the bag
- 40:38at that point.
- 40:39So a bunt-base hit for Pat Kelly.
- 40:42Here's Lewis Polonia.
- 40:50He struck out on a high fastball in the first inning.
- 40:54He's having a very solid season, hitting 3-10,
- 40:57a home run and 36 runs batted in.
- 41:00Sprague comes in on the grass for Polonia.
- 41:03See, against a righty like Kelly, had to play at least
- 41:06at the bag because Kelly can hit the ball past him.
- 41:09The pitch to Polonia is a breaking ball away.
- 41:12Polonia can do it as well, but he's got to slap it that way.
- 41:15And it gives Sprague a little bit more reaction time.
- 41:18So the bunt-base hit by Kelly, his second,
- 41:22or the Yankees' second base hit of the afternoon.
- 41:30The 1-0, and Polonia calls time.
- 41:38The scoreboard crew really has a lot of pretty clever songs
- 41:44that have already been played, and they have a lot of songs
- 41:47that are going to be played throughout the day.
- 41:49And I've just got a list of them.
- 41:52They're so clever over there.
- 41:53Henkin fires over and Kelly back.
- 41:56Should I stay or should I go?
- 41:57That's the one I just heard.
- 42:01Or We Can Work It Out is going to be next.
- 42:04End of the world as we know it.
- 42:07The pitch to Polonia slapped into left field.
- 42:10Cole's going back, still going back.
- 42:11He'll have to play it up against the wall.
- 42:13It goes into the corner.
- 42:14Kelly goes to third, and they're going to hold them right there.
- 42:17Polonia's on second with a double.
- 42:20He gave it a ride right into the left field corner.
- 42:28You know, Louie does have pretty good power,
- 42:30and that time he hit the ball over Cole's head.
- 42:33He also hit it down the line, and the ball just stayed in.
- 42:36You know, at the very top of the wall after a bounce.
- 42:40So the Yankees have the tying runs on,
- 42:42second and third with just one out.
- 42:44They have two cracks at a base that would tie it with Boggs and O'Neill.
- 42:48Here's the pitch to Boggs, swung on and fouled back.
- 42:51Just finishing up the list of songs the scoreboard crew has on tap.
- 42:55Vacation, couple days off, bye-bye love, go away, see you later, alligator,
- 43:02and don't go breaking my heart.
- 43:10Some of the musical messages.
- 43:13The O'One is slap foul on the left side.
- 43:16Into the lower deck, it's O and 2.
- 43:20Boggs grounded out to short in the first inning,
- 43:22hitting 340, 11 home runs and 54 runs batted in.
- 43:31Great speed on the bases for the Yankees.
- 43:33Kelly at third and Polonia at second.
- 43:36One out, Yankees trail 2-0.
- 43:38We are in the bottom of the third.
- 43:40The hits are even at three apiece.
- 43:43The pitch to Boggs, swung on and fouled away, again up her deck, third base side.
- 43:48You know, you can't beat the great taste of Snapple's all-natural lemonade,
- 43:52fruit punch, grapeade, mango madness, and kiwi strawberry juice drink, Snapple.
- 43:57America's all-natural beverages made from the best stuff on earth.
- 44:05On deck, Poloneo.
- 44:12The Blue Jays pretty much played Boggs, honestly, not too much of a shift.
- 44:16The O2, way high with a fastball 1 and 2, but the one thing they have to watch out for,
- 44:22Dornell Coles is extremely shallow in left field, and Boggs has great power that way.
- 44:28He can really get burned out there.
- 44:30He just got burned by Polonia, and you're right, he is way shallow to cut off the line drive hit.
- 44:37The 1-2, swung on and drilled to center field.
- 44:40That should get a run in.
- 44:41Huff charging in, Kelly is tagging.
- 44:44Here's the throw, they'll be cut off by O'Rourke.
- 44:47Kelly slides in, and the Yankees have cut it 2-1 on Wade Boggs' sack fly to center.
- 44:56Boy, if there was going to be an appeal play, there should be there.
- 45:01You're allowed to leave when the ball strikes the glove of the off-fielders, so he can't juggle it.
- 45:08And then if Kelly left at the right time, he just left at the right time.
- 45:15It's tough to watch two things at once, but I had a better chance, and I'll be darned if he didn't leave a tad early.
- 45:25I thought so anyway.
- 45:26Anyway, once the pitch is made, that's the end of the appeal.
- 45:29Here's Paul O'Neill, the pitch to O'Neill, a breaking ball outside 1-0.
- 45:33O'Neill grounded to second.
- 45:35That was in the first, hitting.363, leading the American League in that category.
- 45:3921 home runs, and 83 runs batted in.
- 45:42With a runner on base, they do not shift as drastically.
- 45:45Well, they can't really, because if Sprague was playing where he was playing with no one on base in the first inning,
- 45:51well, then Pallogna would be able to steal third base easily.
- 45:55This time, I guess Sprague would be 20 feet off the line, and Schofield is up the middle, but on the shortstop side, not the second base side.
- 46:08Engen fires the second with Schofield covering, and Pallogna dives back.
- 46:12Also, they had that same shift, and O'Neill would pointedly hit a ground ball through to get a run in.
- 46:18Two outs, no one on. You really want him to go to left field.
- 46:23Engen sets the 1-0, way outside 2-0.
- 46:28He does have Tartabal on deck. First base is open.
- 46:31I don't think he's going to come into O'Neill with anything really fat.
- 46:36Why do that? You'd rather have the righty against the righty.
- 46:39Although Tartabal did hit a shot in the second inning that was caught in left field.
- 46:50Here's the 2-0. There's a strike, a fastball on the outside part of the plate, 2-1.
- 46:57In his last 11 games, O'Neill is 17-41. That's a 4-15 clip.
- 47:03But if the season ends today, he will probably win the American League batting title.
- 47:07That's not the way he wants to win it.
- 47:10The 2-1, outside 3-1.
- 47:18Yankees trail 2-1, we're in the bottom of the third inning.
- 47:21Blue Jays 2-3, and O'The Yankees 1-3 at 0.
- 47:24Jays with two runs in the second, the Yankees with one in already in the third.
- 47:28Bologna's on second with two outs.
- 47:34The 3-1 to O'Neill. Fastball high and away he walks.
- 47:41That wasn't intentional, but it was close.
- 47:44And here's Tartabal.
- 47:49Danny Tartabal.
- 47:51Tartabal, who was hit by a pitch in the first game of the Orioles series,
- 47:55got out the last two games, and his left elbow is heavily wrapped,
- 47:59but they took x-rays, x-rays were negative.
- 48:01He was just severely bruised.
- 48:07He was hit by Mark Eichhorn.
- 48:10Here's the picks to Tartabal. Swung and fouled back to the screen, 0-1-1.
- 48:16Tartabal is at 2-56, 18 home runs, and 64 runs batted in.
- 48:24Against the Blue Jays lifetime, not great numbers, 11 home runs and 41 runs batted in.
- 48:30Just 74 hits.
- 48:33Spring is deep at third, but not very close to the line.
- 48:36And the outfield there straight away.
- 48:50Here's the 0-1. Fastball up and in, 1-1.
- 48:53The Blue Jays tri-state quality four-dealers of the game are Ry Ford in Ry, New York,
- 48:58Haven Ford in Bound Brook, New Jersey,
- 49:01and Griffin Ford of New Canaan in New Canaan, Connecticut.
- 49:05So we have three today, and we welcome Ed Schaefer and Alan Gora from Havens Ford.
- 49:10The 1-1. Fastball inside, 2-1-1.
- 49:21On deck, Don Mattingly.
- 49:25Polonia leads off second, O'Neill off first.
- 49:31Henkin sets, checks Polonia, the 2-1.
- 49:34Swung out and hit deep to left field.
- 49:36See ya, home run, and the Yankees lead 4-2.
- 49:41Oh, what a shot by Danny Tartabal.
- 49:44You blink and you missed it. That's how hard he hit the ball.
- 49:47And it was in the lower deck in left field in a nanosecond.
- 49:51Home run Tartabal.
- 50:00I was watching the monitor, Mike, just for a moment.
- 50:05And they had the shot from the center field camera, so you see the ball coming into the hitter.
- 50:10Well, in that split second, it was a fastball over the middle.
- 50:15Tartabal hit it with a sweet spot, and as he swung, you knew it was a home run.
- 50:20Then the crack of the bat, and the ball wound up.
- 50:23No 10, 12 rows back in the left field lower seats.
- 50:27Pitzom Mattingly is a strike right down the middle, 0-1-1. What a shot, John.
- 50:31He has unbelievable power. That was the right pitch for him in the right spot, and he hit it out immediately.
- 50:37Pitzom Mattingly is swung on a miss.
- 50:41John also, okay, also Danny Tartabal just got John Perry of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania,
- 50:48a pair of round trip Delta airline tickets to Dallas, Texas.
- 50:52So congratulations, John. He knew it was out right away.
- 50:55Pitzom Mattingly is way outside.
- 50:58And he stayed at the plate, got out in such little time, then he went to his home run, tried at home plate.
- 51:04Pitzom Mattingly is swung on and Rick Fowle outside of first, it's 1-2.
- 51:09Also, Danny's home run, a Coors Light silver bullet blast, and the Yankees have themselves a 4-2 lead.
- 51:15They've scored four runs here on the bottom of the third inning.
- 51:18The 1-2, low and away, 2-2.
- 51:31Mattingly had a single of center field in the second inning. He's had a good year against the Jays this year, 9-3, 3-91.
- 51:37The 2-2 swung on line drive right at the third baseman.
- 51:41Sprague almost hit him in the face, and that'll do it for the Yankees in the third, but they did quite enough.
- 51:46Four runs, three hits, and no errors, and none left.
- 51:49At the end of three-full, the Yankees more, and the Blue Jays too.
- 51:54Well, Melito Perez has himself a lead now, thanks to Danny Tartabal's three-run home run.
- 51:58Yankees lead 4-2, 2-3 and 0 for the Jays, and 4-4 and 0 for the Yankees.
- 52:02We go to the top of the fourth inning.
- 52:04John O'Rourke will lead off against Melito Perez, and stepping back in behind the microphone, John Sterling.
- 52:10Thank you, Michael.
- 52:13Perez deals, and O'Rourke bounces it foul.
- 52:19And the count, 0-1.
- 52:21O'Rourke ignited the Toronto two-run rally in the second.
- 52:26He lined a single to right, and then after a walk,
- 52:29Ed Sprague at the very top of the center field wall for a two-run triple.
- 52:34And those are the two Toronto runs.
- 52:37Here's the 0-1. O'Rourke actually threatens months, something he'll never do in a lifetime,
- 52:42and takes inside 1-1.
- 52:45The pitch is hit the short.
- 52:48Gallego feels and throws out O'Rourke, and there's one away.
- 52:54Boy, Tartabal's home run was special.
- 52:56I mean, there are very few home runs that when they leave the bat,
- 52:59almost when he's finished with his follow-through, you know it's gone.
- 53:02Don Elkhorn, who's been playing for the Yankees,
- 53:05has been playing for the Yankees for the Yankees for the Yankees.
- 53:08He's been playing for the Yankees for the Yankees for the Yankees.
- 53:11When he's finished with his follow-through, you know it's gone.
- 53:15Don Elkhorn took one step back.
- 53:17He was almost kind of like, why waste the energy, because that was out.
- 53:21As he hit it.
- 53:23I just happened to be looking at the monitor, and as the ball came and the bat swung,
- 53:28you knew it was home run.
- 53:30The pitch is a strike to Mike Huff.
- 53:34Huff walked after O'Rourke's single.
- 53:36That's at the stage where Sprague's two-run triple.
- 53:39Sprague's lead 4-2 in the fourth.
- 53:41Pitch is bounced to third.
- 53:43Foxfields, even with the back, throws to Mattingly, and they're two-way.
- 53:48This game has a little pace to it.
- 53:54So two down, and here's Darnell Coles.
- 53:57I know Mike told you about it.
- 53:59If there is a strike, we begin tomorrow night at Mickey Mantles from 7 to 10.
- 54:05We urge you to come down.
- 54:06It's at Central Park South between the Plaza and the Samaritz on 59th,
- 54:12between 5th and 6th.
- 54:14There is a strike to Coles.
- 54:16And if you don't come down, just tune to 77 on the AM.
- 54:19WABC, our flagship here in New York, will take your phone calls,
- 54:22and we'll talk about anything you want to talk about.
- 54:25It'll be an 0-1 to Coles, check swing foul, and of course it'll be strike central.
- 54:31We'll have the Fears and the Ravages talking about the ravages they are doing to the game.
- 54:39Strike central at Central Park.
- 54:42Very good, sir.
- 54:45What nerve.
- 54:48And what foolishness.
- 54:50And the crowds are terrific in baseball.
- 54:53So is the season.
- 54:54It'll be an 0-2 to Coles.
- 54:56A slow ground ball, too short.
- 54:58Gallego hustles, feels, fires, got him.
- 55:01Whoa.
- 55:02And Coles got into a dance.
- 55:04I'll tell you, the first base umpire, Rick Reed, almost called him safe.
- 55:10Gallego had trouble getting it out of the glove, and he was safe.
- 55:15A good degree more.
- 55:17No runs, no hits, no errors at the end of 3 1⁄2, 4-2, Yankees.
- 55:21Hey Yankees fans, take it from Dave Lennox.

- 55:49Let's be a Lennox.
- 55:57We go to the bottom of the fourth.
- 55:58Here's Mike Stanley at the leadoff.
- 56:00And the fastball strike on the outside corner from Hempkin.
- 56:042-3 and 0-4 Toronto.
- 56:054-4 and 0-4 the Yanks.
- 56:07If you've tuned in late, Toronto scored their 2 in the second.
- 56:11A single by Ulru to walk to Huff, and a 2-run triple by Ed Sprague off the top of the center field wall.
- 56:16The 0-1 strike on the outside.
- 56:18The count 0-2.
- 56:20Yankee scored 4 last inning.
- 56:22With one out, a bunt single by Pat Kelly ignited it.
- 56:26Then Polonia doubled him to third on the left field line.
- 56:29Boggs scored one with a sack fly.
- 56:31O'Neill walked and Tarnable crushed a 3-run home run into the lower seats.
- 56:37And the Yankees have a 4-2 lead.
- 56:40For Tarnable, 19th home run, and now he has 67 RBIs.
- 56:45Breaking ball is in the dirt to Stanley, now on the count 1-2.
- 56:48Stanley a 3-0-1, 17 homers and 57 RBIs, having his second consecutive outstanding year.
- 56:56On the member's only scoreboard, there are just three games in the American League.
- 57:00One of them is this afternoon, but it's raining, holding up play between Milwaukee and Detroit at Tiger Stadium.
- 57:07The one missed.
- 57:09If they start, it'll be Bill Wegman for the Brewers and Mike Moore for the Tigers.
- 57:14Tonight, Boston's in Baltimore, Aaron Sealy for the Red Sox, Arthur Rhodes for the Birds,
- 57:19and Seattle at Oakland, Randy Johnson against Ron Darling, the 2-2, high fastball 3-2.
- 57:28That's the American, and the National has a full slate, or within one game of a full slate.
- 57:39The line by Henkin, the 3-2, fouled away.
- 57:43This afternoon, they're playing a businessman special in Cincinnati.
- 57:47At the end of six innings of play, LA 2, the Reds nothing.
- 57:51It's Ramon Martinez against Jose Rio.
- 57:54Tim Wallach, it is 23rd home run for LA.
- 57:59San Diego has begun at Houston.
- 58:02Here is the line by Henkin, and the payoff is to Stanley.
- 58:06Struck him out swinging at a fastball, great fastball by Henkin.
- 58:10So, one away.
- 58:12At the end of one, San Diego leads the Astros 3-0.
- 58:15Derrick Bell hit his 14th at two-run home run.
- 58:17Joey Hamilton against Greg Swindell.
- 58:22Tonight, Atlanta's at Colorado, Greg Maddox and Lance Painter.
- 58:27The Mets are in Philadelphia, Jason Huckamy against Fernando Valenzuela.
- 58:33Montreal's in Pittsburgh, Butch Henry against Zane Smith, and St. Louis in Florida, Bob Chicksberry and Pat Rapp.
- 58:41Anthony Williams swings and hits a long drive to right center.
- 58:44On the run is Huff. He makes the catch in deep right center, and there are two away.
- 58:51Shortstop, Mike Gallego.
- 58:56Now, two away here is Mike Gallego.
- 58:58Head over to Stearns and see their wide selection of the ultimate in men's fashions from the leader, members only.
- 59:04See the great array of members only jackets and sportswear.
- 59:07Clothes that are stylish as well as comfortable.
- 59:10Remember, Stearns and members only urge you to do clothes and not drugs.
- 59:18Gags lined a second his first time. He takes outside 1-0.
- 59:29The Yankees have a 4-2 lead bottom of the fourth.
- 59:31Two outs going on, Gallego fouls it away, and that evens the counted 1-1.
- 59:41I think I'll quote, because it's everything I've said, which may be why it appeals to me, but I think I'll quote a paragraph from Bill Madden's column in the news today.
- 59:51The 1-1, cut on us, and the count 1-2.
- 59:56And basically it's what can happen and should happen.
- 1:00:01And the funny thing is, obviously, why not have it happen now? Why wait?
- 1:00:06The 1-2 hit in the air to left center field.
- 1:00:09Donald Larronte is up in left center. He makes the catch.
- 1:00:12And that'll do it.
- 1:00:143-up and 3-down.
- 1:00:16And at the end of four innings of play, the score of the Yankees, 4-2.
- 1:00:29To the fifth.
- 1:00:31And the pitch is outside to Ed Sprague.
- 1:00:34Sprague had the big blow for Toronto, and he just missed a three-run home run hitting the very top of the center field wall.
- 1:00:40Missed by a couple of inches of a three-run homer.
- 1:00:43Right-hand hitter. The 0-1 is a strike from Melito on the count 0-2.
- 1:00:51Sprague borders their 8-and-9 in the order, and then the top of the order in Dick Schofield.
- 1:00:57Three right-hand hitters here in the fifth.
- 1:00:59Sprague fouls it away, first base out.
- 1:01:04It's time to enjoy the real brew taste of Snapple Ice Teas, regular in diet.
- 1:01:08Delicious flavors such as raspberry, mint, peach, orange, and more. Snapple Ice Teas made from the best stuff on earth.
- 1:01:19Sprague swings that missus, strike three.
- 1:01:32So there's one away.
- 1:01:46Borders a right-hand hitter, takes the pitch low outside, 1-0.
- 1:01:55The Yankees with a 4-2 lead in the fifth. The pitch is a strike.
- 1:01:59You know, Mike mentioned the songs that they are playing.
- 1:02:06We want to give credit to our sound system, the very best there is here in Yankee Stadium.
- 1:02:10Pitch inside, and the people make it work.
- 1:02:12John Franzone, Myra Jimenez, Larry Peterson, Eric Wolf, Jennifer Giandolone.
- 1:02:24The pitch cut on and missed by Borders. I hope that's correct.
- 1:02:29Giandolone, John Lores, Jim Shutterly.
- 1:02:39The pitch is hit on the ground foul outside of third.
- 1:02:42Lou Zahelsnik, I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly.
- 1:02:47Paul Beckerly, Dave Gans, Brian McNulty.
- 1:02:53And in absentia, Anthony, the Pest, Defonzo.
- 1:02:57Nice nickname to have, the Pest.
- 1:02:59Yeah. I've known people like that.
- 1:03:02I haven't called them it, though.
- 1:03:05Not on the air, anyway. The 2-2 foul, though.
- 1:03:09Did you mention that Fierce with the MSG guys?
- 1:03:11Yes.
- 1:03:12Why isn't he at a table with Richard Ravitch?
- 1:03:15I don't know.
- 1:03:16Why is he spreading his spin to people?
- 1:03:19Yeah, that's all they do is spin, spin, spin.
- 1:03:22I'd love to ask him.
- 1:03:24So ridiculous.
- 1:03:26Now, Perez 2-2 has fouled off.
- 1:03:29That got Stanley on the hand.
- 1:03:32And Borders, a fellow catcher can empathize and is trying to hold Stanley.
- 1:03:38That really hurts. That may have broken his finger.
- 1:03:41He is in such pain.
- 1:03:43Gene Monahan runs out, and Stanley's a pretty tough cookie.
- 1:03:46And that might have gotten a piece of the meat hand.
- 1:03:49In fact, it did. There's no question about it.
- 1:03:51Usually they hide that behind the glove or behind their back,
- 1:03:54but Stanley had it exposed, and the ball was fouled right into his hand.
- 1:03:58Oh.
- 1:04:01Come on.
- 1:04:04How would he keep that behind him without a runner on base?
- 1:04:10He's in tremendous pain and is being assisted by Gene Monahan.
- 1:04:15Jim Layres will come out and warm up Malito.
- 1:04:18He's been there before. He knows just what's happening.
- 1:04:24And you never see Stanley like this.
- 1:04:26He's almost crawling. He's in such pain.
- 1:04:29And he's twisting his head. He's in contortions to try to battle the pain.
- 1:04:33He's biting his upper lip right now.
- 1:04:36He doesn't even want to look at it.
- 1:04:39He's staring out into the outfield, and Gene Monahan is working with the hand.
- 1:04:43Now, Buck Showalter is standing over both of them.
- 1:04:47You can just see from body language, John, how much pain this guy is in right now.
- 1:04:55And I think Nokes has been told to go down to the clubhouse.
- 1:04:59It's not a very long run. Very short, as a matter of fact.
- 1:05:03And there's a little runway between the dugout and the clubhouse.
- 1:05:08Stanley is coming out.
- 1:05:11I hope his finger is not broken. His hand is not broken. It could be.
- 1:05:16And Nokes is going to put on the equipment and get ready.
- 1:05:24The Yankees have a 4-2 lead here in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:05:28There's one out going on. It'll be a 2-2 pitch to borders when we resume.
- 1:05:33He followed it off and caught Stanley's throwing hand, his right hand,
- 1:05:38maybe in the middle of the fingers, in the back of the fingers.
- 1:05:44So Matt Nokes will come in. Or Jim Larris will come in.
- 1:05:47And Nokes just went back to get the catcher's glove to warm up Maledo.
- 1:05:51And Jimmy Larris will put on the catcher's gear.
- 1:05:54Follow the Yankees all year round in the pages of Yankees Magazine.
- 1:05:58If you subscribe now, you'll get special introductory rate of $14.97 for 12 issues.
- 1:06:03The magazine filled with player features, great color, action, photo, stats.
- 1:06:08Final league reports, a lot more.
- 1:06:10If you order with a credit card, 1-800-9-Yankees-9.
- 1:06:24And I wonder why they're not bringing in Nokes with the right-hander pitching.
- 1:06:28And the simple answer isn't a real pleasant one,
- 1:06:31but they don't feel as comfortable with Nokes in the splitter as they do with Larris in the splitter.
- 1:06:36And that's the only reason Larris will catch and not Nokes.
- 1:06:41I think Jimmy went in to put on his gear.
- 1:06:45Nokes already has on the shin guards. He thought he was coming in, but then Joe Alther said,
- 1:06:49no, no, it's Larris.
- 1:06:52I don't know why Matt walked back into the dugout. Larris still isn't out there.
- 1:06:56Matt should be out there warming up Melito Perez.
- 1:07:06Isn't it amazing though how these guys fear and ravage will jump in front of any camera and microphone,
- 1:07:12but not stay in a boardroom and negotiate so that this game doesn't go on strike.
- 1:07:18I think it's disgraceful they should be locked in a room. The owner should be in the room.
- 1:07:22Oh, hey, well, I have a minute. Let me read you this paragraph as Larris comes out,
- 1:07:27try to do it quickly, try to get to it quickly.
- 1:07:31It's everything that we've been saying on the air.
- 1:07:34This is from Bill Madden's column.
- 1:07:37And he says, make no mistake.
- 1:07:40You have owners really wanted to avert this now certain strike.
- 1:07:44All they had to do was get these negotiations off ground zero yesterday.
- 1:07:49By ditching the salary cap, they know they'll never get an addressing reform in the salary arbitration system,
- 1:07:57which is negotiable.
- 1:07:59Instead, owners are going to go to the mat over the salary cap.
- 1:08:03And it is sheer madness, not to mention sheer arrogance.
- 1:08:07And then he goes on to talk about the great state of baseball and how some owners
- 1:08:13are very much against what is going on with their fellow owners.
- 1:08:17But there is any question in my mind that the owners can get help in the arbitration system,
- 1:08:26which is patently unfair to owners. I would agree with that.
- 1:08:29Although the owners put it in. I mean, they're fools, but they made their own mistake.
- 1:08:34But it can be rectified. And that is negotiable.
- 1:08:37Salary cap is not negotiable. They'll never get the salary cap.
- 1:08:44Boy, if I was the other owners who were drawn, like this team and others,
- 1:08:48the 2-2 is a check swing foul. So Larry is behind the plate.
- 1:08:53And we'll get a report on Stanley as soon as we can.
- 1:08:56Didn't look good. Did not look good.
- 1:09:00Well, how could it look good if a ball is fouled off the bare hand?
- 1:09:03Now the question is, did it break a finger or not? If it didn't, if it's just swelling or whatever.
- 1:09:08But it did not look good. You're right. The 2-2 is hit on the ground a second.
- 1:09:12Kelly throws out of borders.
- 1:09:16And they're two-way.
- 1:09:21It's funny. Ironic, I guess is a much better word to use.
- 1:09:28Not funny. Ha-ha. Funny. Ironic. Jeff Bagwell gets hurt last night.
- 1:09:32Now here Stanley gets hurt. What could be the last game? It's terrible.
- 1:09:35So two-way. That'll bring up Dick Schofield.
- 1:09:38You know, John, you mentioned arbitration and the one thing that the players always say about arbitration.
- 1:09:43The bitch outside.
- 1:09:45Well, you know, the owners put it in.
- 1:09:48How about the players who sign contracts and after two years they want to renegotiate?
- 1:09:52Is that okay? Nobody knocks them.
- 1:09:55Now, well, everyone knocks them. The 1-0.
- 1:09:58Cut on a miss. If you say to me, John, what you're saying is they're both spoiled and greedy?
- 1:10:03Yes. Of course. No one listens to this.
- 1:10:08I hope no one halfway intelligent listens to the spin that the fears and the ravages give the pitches low.
- 1:10:14Or some of the owners that are losing this money. Losing money, go out of business.
- 1:10:18That's what Goldberg's Deli does.
- 1:10:21It'd be a 2-1 to Schofield.
- 1:10:23This is a profitable business and they have to learn how to share it.
- 1:10:26The 2-1 inside 3-1. It's unthinkable.
- 1:10:29It could be that dumb to stop a business that is so profitable in its most profitable year.
- 1:10:35Baseball's never had this kind of success.
- 1:10:38They have everything they want.
- 1:10:41It'll be a 3-1.
- 1:10:43Perez deals. Strike called to Schofield.
- 1:10:45They count 3-2. Two outs, no one on.
- 1:10:48Top of the 5th, 4-2 Yanks.
- 1:10:50Mike Lupick had a great line in his column today. He said Bud Selig.
- 1:10:53First said there was 19 teams projected to lose money.
- 1:10:56Then 21 teams.
- 1:10:58Then he said it was down to a dozen.
- 1:11:00The 3-2 fouled away.
- 1:11:03And now there is a suggestion that it could be as few as 6 or 7.
- 1:11:06And then Lupick writes, Selig could make the national debt disappear just by talking about it.
- 1:11:12Well, as I mentioned, if anyone believes the nonsense that is spewed out from both sides,
- 1:11:18that it's a profitable business, the business is booming,
- 1:11:22everything is right, now they have to find a way to share it.
- 1:11:253-2 fouled away. And there is a way.
- 1:11:29We've been saying it. Madden just said it in the news.
- 1:11:32Absolutely. Get rid of the salary cap.
- 1:11:35Get help on arbitration.
- 1:11:37Sign a long contract.
- 1:11:39And let's not hear from you people again for, till the end of the contract.
- 1:11:42Then there'll be another problem.
- 1:11:44Here's the payoff.
- 1:11:46And it's fouled away.
- 1:11:47And make no mistake about it.
- 1:11:48The problem is both sides are greedily trying to suck up as much money as possible
- 1:11:55instead of being both happy in the profits they have.
- 1:12:00And if there is, you know, population does shift.
- 1:12:02It does in New York.
- 1:12:04That's why the Giants are a giant stadium.
- 1:12:07Population shifts, etc.
- 1:12:09And if in fact Pittsburgh can't make it, Milwaukee can't make it,
- 1:12:13I cannot tell you how many cities want a baseball team.
- 1:12:17I'll give you some soon.
- 1:12:18There's the 3-2 to Schofield inside ball four.
- 1:12:21I'll give you some now.
- 1:12:22Try this on for size.
- 1:12:24Washington, D.C., Buffalo, New York, Charlotte, North Carolina, Memphis, Tennessee, Phoenix, Arizona,
- 1:12:33Tampa, Florida, Sacramento, California.
- 1:12:36That enough cities to begin?
- 1:12:38Orlando.
- 1:12:39Orlando, Florida is another one.
- 1:12:41So I've just given about, what is that, about eight cities.
- 1:12:45You'll find a buyer in one of those cities.
- 1:12:48You can't make it?
- 1:12:49I'll introduce you to a buyer.
- 1:12:50I want a cut.
- 1:12:51I want to find his fee.
- 1:12:53The pitch to Alomar is up high.
- 1:12:55I want to know.
- 1:13:04The walk was the second given up by Perez.
- 1:13:10And the first led him into trouble.
- 1:13:12Four-two Yanks, two outs in the fifth.
- 1:13:14Schofield on first pitch.
- 1:13:16Alomar takes a strike in the count one and one.
- 1:13:23As soon as we get a report on Stanley, we'll let you know.
- 1:13:33Now, Molito deals to Alomar.
- 1:13:36And he chops one slowly past the mound.
- 1:13:39Mattingly feels, flips to Perez.
- 1:13:40And time.
- 1:13:41Beautiful play by both.
- 1:13:43Perez couldn't get it.
- 1:13:44Then he went to the bag.
- 1:13:45And Mattingly back flipped in the ball.
- 1:13:47Perez caught it, found the bag.
- 1:13:49And that'll do it.
- 1:13:50No runs, no hits, one left.
- 1:13:52At the end of four and a half, four-two Yanks.
- 1:13:57Matt Kelly takes a fast strike.
- 1:13:59It was Kelly who ignited the Yankee four-run rally with a bunt single.
- 1:14:05Kelly at 280 as he stands in.
- 1:14:08The right-hander Henkin deals.
- 1:14:09And Kelly takes the breaking ball low.
- 1:14:12And on the count one and one, Yanks with a four-two lead, bottom of the fifth.
- 1:14:15That'll be Kelly.
- 1:14:16Then the top of the order, the lefty hitters, Luis Bologna, Wade Boggs.
- 1:14:22Now Henkin to the wide.
- 1:14:23Here's the one-one.
- 1:14:24That's high.
- 1:14:25On the count two and one.
- 1:14:27Trying to get the most in New York we can get.
- 1:14:29And here is the daily news.
- 1:14:30Yankee beat writer Jeff Bradley.
- 1:14:35Are you melancholy, John?
- 1:14:36Yes.
- 1:14:38The two-one fouled off.
- 1:14:40You know what, a little bit melancholy.
- 1:14:42I'm really more angry.
- 1:14:43How dumb can they all be?
- 1:14:44I've done this before.
- 1:14:45I mean, even it's boring to me.
- 1:14:47I'm beating the same issues.
- 1:14:49Bill Madden in your newspaper, the news I just read, one of his paragraphs, said it perfectly.
- 1:14:54We all know how to avert the strike.
- 1:14:57The players' side gives in on arbitration.
- 1:15:00The owners throw the stupid salary cap away.
- 1:15:03And on we go with this great season, the two-two.
- 1:15:05Cut on him.
- 1:15:06One away.
- 1:15:07Ten seconds for a station ID.
- 1:15:08This is New York Yankees baseball.
- 1:15:12Stay tuned following Yankee baseball.
- 1:15:14It's the Bob Grant Show right here on...
- 1:15:16WAB3 New York.
- 1:15:21You know, John and I were talking in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:15:25We look over in the MSG booth and Donald Fears on without Trout Wigan and Tony Kubek.
- 1:15:30And I wonder if you think like I do, why is he sitting there and not across from the table with rabbits there?
- 1:15:36Well,
- 1:15:39Bologna just gets out of the way of a hard inside fastball.
- 1:15:44What does one want to know?
- 1:15:46The players' union has said that they are not...
- 1:15:49They feel there's no need to talk unless something new is going to be presented.
- 1:15:54And I guess they are unwilling to discuss the current proposal.
- 1:16:00The 1-0 change.
- 1:16:02Wouldn't you think though that fear would sit across from where Ravitch had...
- 1:16:09By the way, there should be owners there and say, look, we want to continue the seasons, great season, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:16:16The pitch is a breaking ball as high on the count of two and one.
- 1:16:20Now, how do we do this?
- 1:16:22If you drop the salary cap, what else do you want?
- 1:16:26How can we work this out?
- 1:16:27Don't you think they should lead that way? The 2-1 is a grounded foul outside of third in the count of two and two.
- 1:16:32And then the owners, if they were honest, would say, well,
- 1:16:35I can get rid of arbitration somehow.
- 1:16:38All right, well, let's work it out.
- 1:16:40You know, John, I feel this way every time we go through this, every four years or whatever it is now.
- 1:16:46You wonder why they don't lock themselves in a room and figure out at least a way to salvage this season in its entirety.
- 1:16:53The 2-2, up high on the count through to then.
- 1:16:55They could, they absolutely could. That's what really bothers me.
- 1:17:01But it goes on and on. We said it last night.
- 1:17:03It's a it's a high priced game of chicken that they're playing and neither side wants to budge.
- 1:17:10They're trying to show their manhood, I guess.
- 1:17:12You know, they drew 65. They've drawn 125,000 people in Colorado the last two nights for the Braves.
- 1:17:19The 3-2 is hit on the ground up the middle fielded at second by Alomar.
- 1:17:23He throws the first in time to get Bologna two way.
- 1:17:26Nice throw by Robbie, you got rid of it the minute it touched his glove.
- 1:17:32Just only have to do is just multiply either 20 or 25 bucks a head times the people come to a ballpark.
- 1:17:39The Yankees, for example, have average 40,000 for the last nine games.
- 1:17:43Three hundred and sixty actually is about three sixty three.
- 1:17:46Just multiply twenty five bucks times three hundred and sixty thousand.
- 1:17:50That's how much money they make for games.
- 1:17:52Ludicrous. It really is ludicrous. Here's Boggs and the pitcher breaking ball low.
- 1:17:56You know, it gets me is John mentions the Rockies.
- 1:17:59I don't think Steinbrenner wants to strike. I know McMorris doesn't want to strike.
- 1:18:03Reinsdorf probably doesn't want to strike. I think the owners are splintered.
- 1:18:08There is struck the box and the players, at least as far as we can tell, are virulently together.
- 1:18:15I mean, do you sense that, Jeff?
- 1:18:18Yeah, I think that's that's been the issue since the beginning.
- 1:18:21That bit's low. Right. That it's really.
- 1:18:25You know, I don't I want to throw the term market out because Montreal has a low payroll.
- 1:18:29That's a big market and they have all Canada with Toronto to share the TV.
- 1:18:34The two won up by another team, another town and who wants baseball, Vancouver and would bid very well for it.
- 1:18:42It's really successful teams against non successful teams. Right.
- 1:18:46The players are somewhere in the middle.
- 1:18:48Here is the three one Boggs lines one toward the gap and left side of the field.
- 1:18:52It is a base hit and it goes by Cole and all the way to the warning track.
- 1:18:56Booted by Huff Boggs turns second and holes with two outs.
- 1:19:00No point trying for third.
- 1:19:02So Boggs doubles to the gap and left center with two outs.
- 1:19:05You know, Mike, more to the point is Denver and Atlanta.
- 1:19:11Are they big cities?
- 1:19:14I mean, just I know population has shifted, but they have very successful ball clubs and successful operations.
- 1:19:20And Denver is going to be solidifying because they're going to go into a Camden Yards next year.
- 1:19:25Baltimore used to be used to decry itself.
- 1:19:29They can't make it there because it was surrounded by Washington, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and New York on all sides.
- 1:19:35Now they're selling out. So has to do them with a ballpark.
- 1:19:39It has to do then with the team. The pitch to O'Neill is a breaking ball low.
- 1:19:45Hey, the owners really wanted a salary cap. They didn't have to impose it on the players.
- 1:19:49What they had to do is take every single one of their dollars, put it in a bundle and split it up 28 ways evenly.
- 1:19:55Then everybody's on the same footing, but that's not what they want to do.
- 1:19:59And so the strike goes on. It'll be a one-oh to O'Neill.
- 1:20:03Swung on and hit in the air down the left field line. Cole's a long run.
- 1:20:06He's there to make the catch in the corner and that'll do it.
- 1:20:10Maybe see you tomorrow? Yeah, Jeff.
- 1:20:12I don't think we'll see you here, but we'll certainly see you at some point at Mickey Mantles.
- 1:20:16You'll be on the show. No runs, one hit and one left at the end of five.
- 1:20:20It's four-two Yanks.
- 1:20:22Cole Molitor.
- 1:20:24We go to the six and Toronto has the middle of their order.
- 1:20:29They're good hitters coming up.
- 1:20:31Paul Molitor, Joe Carter, John Olrude, Malito leading four-two.
- 1:20:38Toronto's two runs in the second.
- 1:20:40A one-out single by Olrude, a walk to Huff and Ed Sprague's near homer,
- 1:20:45a triple off the top of the center field wall to score the two runs.
- 1:20:48I'll tell you how the Yankees scored in a moment.
- 1:20:51The pitch to Molitor is down low one-and-oh.
- 1:20:55One-out going on, bottom of the third.
- 1:20:57Paul Kelly has a bunt single, Polonia doubles down the left field line to send him to third.
- 1:21:01Bogg scores one with a sack fly and then O'Neill walks.
- 1:21:06The wide by Perez.
- 1:21:08Here's the one-out to Molitor.
- 1:21:10It's hit on the ground, up the middle and through to center field for a base hit.
- 1:21:13Now the hit machine keeps on hitting Paul Molitor.
- 1:21:16Takes a wide turn but comes back.
- 1:21:19And after O'Neill walked two-on-two out, Danny Chartable crushed a fastball
- 1:21:23right over the middle from Henkin.
- 1:21:25Got it in a bad place and Danny put it in the lower seats and left for a three-run home run.
- 1:21:29Four-two Yanks.
- 1:21:31You know what gets me about this whole thing, John, when we walk into the stadium there,
- 1:21:35people behind the police lines and you know, with the Yankee seven games up on August 10th,
- 1:21:39the questions we should hear, you think they're going to hold on?
- 1:21:43Who do you think they're going to meet in the playoffs?
- 1:21:45Now, the last two weeks, you think the strike's going to be really long?
- 1:21:50You think the playoffs will be here? You think?
- 1:21:52It's sad. Joe Carter hits a high fly to left field.
- 1:21:56Polonia goes toward the line and the ball is going to be way foul and deep in the seats on the count, 0-1.
- 1:22:03Well, Mike, everything baseball wanted from their divisional setup has worked.
- 1:22:09Classic years from so many players individually and also the big cities they want to do well for TV ratings.
- 1:22:19It'll be an 0-1 to Carter. He fouls it off.
- 1:22:22New York has a team in first place, the Yanks.
- 1:22:25Chicago has a team in first place, the White Sox.
- 1:22:28Los Angeles has a team in first place, the Dodgers.
- 1:22:32So they got everything they want. It's not enough. Never enough.
- 1:22:36And they have a growing big market, Texas in first place.
- 1:22:40Yes, oh, Dallas is getting to be a huge market. The 0-2. Cut on and missed.
- 1:22:45He struck out. Carter went away. This whole nonsense about big market, small market.
- 1:22:50Please, you can't be a smaller market than Baltimore and they sell every seed to every game at Camden Yards.
- 1:23:04For Milito, the strikeout was his third.
- 1:23:09And here's O'Rourke who has singled and grounded a short.
- 1:23:12Yankees with a 4-2 lead here in the sixth.
- 1:23:16One on, one out. Milito we mentioned has this unbelievable stolen base percentage.
- 1:23:23Which is low. Even a mathematician of my stature,
- 1:23:30which is somewhere between 0 and zip, can figure it out.
- 1:23:35Milito has attempted and stolen 20 bases this year.
- 1:23:41Good job first. Milito checks him over the shoulder and deals on the fastballs high on the count 2-0.
- 1:23:48Tomorrow night, we'll be on the air at 6.45 with Yankee pregame and 7.05 with the play-by-play.
- 1:23:56If there isn't a strike. Two right-handers, Scott Kamenicki and Dave Stewart.
- 1:24:00If there is a strike, we'll be on the air 15 minutes later at 7 from Mickey Mantles.
- 1:24:05Fetch up high. Sterling and Kay will take your phone calls, do a million interviews,
- 1:24:10have people at Mantles, have crowd participation at Mantles.
- 1:24:14So if you come on by, you'll be on the radio.
- 1:24:23It'll be a 3-0 to O'Rourke. He might be swinging.
- 1:24:26Milito deals and the pitch is high. He walks.
- 1:24:31And there are two on and one out. Here's right-hand hitting Mike Huff.
- 1:24:37The center fielder, Mike Huff.
- 1:24:44So Perez has now struck out three and also walked three.
- 1:24:48Huff is 0-1. A line drive tie-pitter.
- 1:24:53Yankee is hoping to get the ground ball on the infield to turn 2.
- 1:24:57Huff takes a pitch low, 1-0.
- 1:25:01And if there is a strike, the first three nights we'll tell you about be Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7 from Mantles.
- 1:25:14Here's the 1-0. Fastball strike in the count 1-1.
- 1:25:19Let's face it, Mike.
- 1:25:22Maybe we feel as sorry for ourselves as anyone else, but what a glamorous year this has been for the Yanks.
- 1:25:30They have such a terrific team. I was playing tennis with a guy yesterday and he said it'll be a 1-1 to Huff.
- 1:25:38It's in the dirt splitter. The count 2-1.
- 1:25:41And one thing that is really captured by the fans is that you know why this year is so great?
- 1:25:46Not just that the Yankees are such a fun team to watch. And we know why. They get bases and score runs.
- 1:25:52There's so many personalities on the team.
- 1:25:55Such a magical year. It could be so great.
- 1:26:00Here's the 2-1. That missed outside and Perez is pitching himself into a whole lot of trouble to count 3-1.
- 1:26:11So a big pitch is coming up. Huff will be cutting and slashing if he likes it.
- 1:26:16Perez certainly wants to throw a strike. One bad pitch and the bases are loaded with 1-0.
- 1:26:23Here's the 3-1. He swings and lines one to right center field. No one's going to catch this.
- 1:26:28It's in the gap. It's a base hit. One run scores.
- 1:26:31Bernie throws to second. It's a double for Huff.
- 1:26:34O'Rourke stops at third. Molager has scored on the double by Huff.
- 1:26:38It's a 4-3 game Yanks.
- 1:26:41The only reason we were able to get that base hit is because Perez fell behind 3-1.
- 1:26:45He did not want to walk the bases full, so he gave Huff a pitch right down the middle.
- 1:26:50And what Huff did was drill it into right center field.
- 1:26:54He didn't even throw a splitter. It was a fastball right down the middle.
- 1:26:58And he lets it run. And again, the only reason he had to make that pitch was because he fell behind 3-1.
- 1:27:03He did not want to load the bases.
- 1:27:11Well, that is the key, isn't it? Strikes.
- 1:27:14Always is. And they have Kamenicki up, John.
- 1:27:17So how sure are they there's going to be a strike?
- 1:27:20Kamenicki pitches today. Who's going to start tomorrow?
- 1:27:23So that tells me that someone's told Buck Showalter that it's 100% guaranteed there'll be a strike today.
- 1:27:31Here's Darnell Coles.
- 1:27:34And the pitch is a high fly to left center. That will tie the game.
- 1:27:39Bologna and deep left makes the catch. O'Rourke could walk home.
- 1:27:44The throw comes to a third. It's going to go in the Toronto dugout.
- 1:27:47No one was there. And I think the run is going to be a lot home. It is.
- 1:27:52So Huff scores all the way from second as Bologna threw the ball to the Toronto dugout.
- 1:27:57And he didn't even throw close.
- 1:27:59And it's 5-4 Toronto.
- 1:28:02Bologna. Where was he throwing the ball?
- 1:28:05First of all, he was throwing the ball.
- 1:28:08First of all, there was no runner going anywhere. He could have lobbed, he could have ran the ball in.
- 1:28:12He could have walked the ball in. He could have rolled the ball in.
- 1:28:15Instead he wound up and threw it way wide a third. There was no one there.
- 1:28:18It went in the Toronto dugout.
- 1:28:21Two runs score on the sack fly and Toronto takes a 5-4 lead. My goodness.
- 1:28:28I think that's just Tim trying to show off whatever army has because you're right, John, no one was going.
- 1:28:35The breaking ball is low to Sprague 1-0. What a goof.
- 1:28:40So it should have been a 4-4 game runner at second two outs.
- 1:28:43That Toronto leads 5-4. Amazing.
- 1:28:47Sprague has tripled in two and struck out.
- 1:28:51And the pitch is low.
- 1:28:54And the count 2-0.
- 1:28:56That's bad baseball right there. Terrible.
- 1:28:58Well, that's bad.
- 1:29:00I think that Bologna could have done anything with the ball. Anything.
- 1:29:05He could have run the ball toward third base.
- 1:29:08It'll be a 2-0. Swung on and hit in the air to left center field.
- 1:29:13Bologna is there.
- 1:29:15He makes the catch, but Toronto gets three runs on two hits and one big fat error.
- 1:29:22No one left at the end of 5-1-5-4 Toronto.
- 1:29:32As we go to the bottom of the sixth, Domingo Cedeno takes over at second base for the Blue Jays.
- 1:29:38So Alomar out and Cedeno in.
- 1:29:41Danny Charneval leads off for the Yanks who have blown a 4-2 lead in trail 5-4.
- 1:29:46Henken deals.
- 1:29:47Charneval takes a fastball at the knees on the outside corner for a strike.
- 1:29:53Danny Fideleff then crushed a three-run home run deep in the seats in left field.
- 1:29:58The 0-1.
- 1:29:59That pitch low.
- 1:30:02We have the members only here, John.
- 1:30:04In the American League, the only other game scheduled for this afternoon is being held up by Rain.
- 1:30:08It was a 1-15 schedule.
- 1:30:11There's a strike on the outside.
- 1:30:13And Milwaukee and Detroit still sitting there with the tarp on. It's Wegman against Moore.
- 1:30:17And if I was the management of Detroit, I'd have them sit there until midnight.
- 1:30:25It'll be a 1-2.
- 1:30:27He struck him out swinging a high fastball.
- 1:30:29Went away.
- 1:30:32Games at night, 7.35.
- 1:30:34Boston at Baltimore.
- 1:30:35Sealy against Rhodes.
- 1:30:37Rhodes has pitched very well for the Orioles since coming up the...
- 1:30:40Seattle at Oakland, 10-0-5.
- 1:30:42Johnson's 12-6 against Darling.
- 1:30:4411-10.
- 1:30:48In the National League, the Dodgers lead the Reds 2-0.
- 1:30:51They go to the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 1:30:53Martinez still in there for the Dodgers.
- 1:30:55Rios started.
- 1:30:56Carrasco came on in the ninth.
- 1:30:57Tim Wallach his 23rd home run.
- 1:30:59So again, the Dodgers 2-0.
- 1:31:01Don Mattingly is 1-2.
- 1:31:03He grounds it foul, first base side.
- 1:31:06Mattingly singled up the middle, then lined hard to third.
- 1:31:10San Diego is leading Houston 5-0, bottom of the third.
- 1:31:14Derrick Bell his 14th home run.
- 1:31:16Hamilton in there for San Diego.
- 1:31:18Swindell started for Houston.
- 1:31:20Mattingly hits a fly ball to center.
- 1:31:22Huff is back in dead center field to make the catch, and they're a 2-way.
- 1:31:26Dave Varas came on in the third for the Astros.
- 1:31:305-0-5 started.
- 1:31:31Lennard, Colorado.
- 1:31:32Maddox going for win number 16.
- 1:31:34He's 15-6 against Lance Painter, 4-5.
- 1:31:38And the rest, 7-35 starts the Mets at Veterans Stadium to meet the Phillies.
- 1:31:41Hockamy against Valenzuela.
- 1:31:43Montreal at Pittsburgh.
- 1:31:44Henry against Zane Smith.
- 1:31:46And St. Louis at Florida.
- 1:31:48Bob Tewksbury against Pat Bratt.
- 1:31:50Tewksbury is 12-10.
- 1:31:52And that is the members only.
- 1:32:00Jim Weiris, who came in for Stanley when Stanley caught a foul tip on his hand,
- 1:32:06takes high 1-0.
- 1:32:08Layers at 2-67 on the year.
- 1:32:1017 home runs and 58 RBIs.
- 1:32:14He's a right-hand hitter.
- 1:32:15Henkin deals.
- 1:32:16Cut out a miss.
- 1:32:17Threw it by him.
- 1:32:18The count 1-1.
- 1:32:195-4, Toronto.
- 1:32:20Bottom of the sixth.
- 1:32:21Two outs and no one on.
- 1:32:235-5 and 0 for Toronto.
- 1:32:254-5 and 1 for the Yanks.
- 1:32:30Here's the 1-1.
- 1:32:32Breaking ball is high.
- 1:32:33No bite to it.
- 1:32:341-1.
- 1:32:41Henkin to the plate.
- 1:32:42That fastball rides high.
- 1:32:443-0.
- 1:32:453-1, excuse me.
- 1:32:47Bernie Williams on deck if Layrits reaches.
- 1:32:50Henkin working quickly.
- 1:32:52Deals 3-1.
- 1:32:53Fastball high.
- 1:32:54Ball 4.
- 1:32:55Layrits on.
- 1:32:56Stop by Macy's today for a look at this year's men's fashion from members only.
- 1:33:00A wide array of the ultimate in today's out-of-wear.
- 1:33:03They're all designed for maximum comfort without sacrificing style.
- 1:33:07And remember, Macy's and members only urge you to do clothes and not drugs.
- 1:33:19Bernie Williams 0-2 on the day.
- 1:33:24He has bounced out and...
- 1:33:27fly into center.
- 1:33:28Batting left-handed against the right-handed Henkin.
- 1:33:35The pitch is strike on the outside.
- 1:33:37On the count 0-1.
- 1:33:52Toronto with a 5-4 lead.
- 1:33:54Bottom of the 6th.
- 1:33:552 outs.
- 1:33:56Toronto on first.
- 1:33:57And Bernie takes a strike on the count 0-2.
- 1:34:00The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather and Connie Chung, where your world comes together.
- 1:34:05That pitch right there from Henkin is the old drop ball that Buck Showalt was talking about in the scanner report.
- 1:34:11It's a curveball that goes from nose to toes.
- 1:34:15Almost like rolling off the table.
- 1:34:18It'll be an 0-2.
- 1:34:21Fastball on.
- 1:34:23And the count 1-2.
- 1:34:27I wonder what's wrong with Roberto Alomar.
- 1:34:31Maybe that's why he jogged the first in the first inning.
- 1:34:33It could be.
- 1:34:34But he ran hard the next time.
- 1:34:39The 1-2 to Bernie.
- 1:34:40Is it up the middle?
- 1:34:41There's a base at the center of the pitch.
- 1:34:43And he's got a little bit of a lead.
- 1:34:45The 1-2 to Bernie.
- 1:34:48Is it up the middle?
- 1:34:49There's a base at the center of the field.
- 1:34:50Lairitz will hold.
- 1:34:53He went around second.
- 1:34:54Huff had the ball.
- 1:34:55So Lairitz holds up.
- 1:34:57The Yanks have the tying run at second.
- 1:34:58The go-ahead run at first.
- 1:34:59There are 2 outs.
- 1:35:00Here's Mike Gallego.
- 1:35:02That was that curveball again.
- 1:35:05And Bernie got it right on top.
- 1:35:07It was a little hanging.
- 1:35:09And he wrapped it through the middle.
- 1:35:11Bernie's 1-3.
- 1:35:12Here's Gallego.
- 1:35:13That was a great opportunity.
- 1:35:15Boy, these crowds.
- 1:35:17The four games so far in this home stand
- 1:35:19have been so responsive.
- 1:35:21They really have.
- 1:35:22Terrific.
- 1:35:25And Mike, that would only grow
- 1:35:27as the importance of the games would grow
- 1:35:30later in the season and playoffs.
- 1:35:32Gallego takes a fastball high.
- 1:35:34The 1-0 to Gags.
- 1:35:49That missed outside.
- 1:35:51And Hemkin behind Tuno.
- 1:35:59Gallego can zone a certain pitch right here.
- 1:36:01He can look, he can take a pitch.
- 1:36:04He's 2-0.
- 1:36:05He can look, try to zone a fastball.
- 1:36:09The 2-0.
- 1:36:11There's the fastball.
- 1:36:13On the outside corner of the knee.
- 1:36:15What a pitch.
- 1:36:18Gallego didn't think so, but let's put it this way.
- 1:36:22Hemkin, if he got a strike, threw it in the greatest spot
- 1:36:26at the knees just on or just off the outside corner,
- 1:36:30depending on your perspective.
- 1:36:32That's what a 2-0 pitch that is.
- 1:36:36The 2-1.
- 1:36:37That fastball high.
- 1:36:38That's the pitch he wants, 3-1.
- 1:36:41First of all, he wants you to go after it.
- 1:36:43Secondly, he wants it about letter high.
- 1:36:47That's a pop-up pitch as hard as he throws.
- 1:36:51So again, Gallego can zone a pitch.
- 1:36:53If he doesn't like it, just let it go.
- 1:36:55Hemkin, if he misses, will load the bases up.
- 1:37:02The stretch.
- 1:37:03The 3-1.
- 1:37:05Slow ball for.
- 1:37:07Slowed it up.
- 1:37:09Gallego started to go and held up.
- 1:37:11That looked like the pitch he got the first strike on.
- 1:37:14Danny Cox starts to warm the Toronto bullpen.
- 1:37:16Galen Sisco, the pitching coach, goes out slowly.
- 1:37:22They're not going to take Hemkin out.
- 1:37:24They're just trying to calm him down.
- 1:37:26Tell him, you know you can get Pan Kelly out.
- 1:37:28So go get him.
- 1:37:33Let's take 10 seconds for station ID.
- 1:37:35This is New York Yankees baseball.
- 1:37:39Lynn Samuels, tonight at 7, right here on Talk Radio 77.
- 1:37:44W-A-B-C, New York.
- 1:37:48The
- 1:37:52Cisco's out there talking with Hemkin.
- 1:37:56Hemkin with a 3.20 ERA is over that already today.
- 1:38:00He's got the bases loaded.
- 1:38:02Matt Kelly got two base hits yesterday against Ben McDonald.
- 1:38:06Has a very quick bat.
- 1:38:08He had a bunt base hit in the third inning down the third baseline.
- 1:38:12And then he struck out in the fifth.
- 1:38:15A very big moment in the ball game right here.
- 1:38:17He's in 279.
- 1:38:19Three home runs and 39 runs batted in.
- 1:38:33Hemkin ready for the first pitch.
- 1:38:35And the first pitch probably the most important pitch.
- 1:38:38He deals.
- 1:38:39Fouled away down the right field line.
- 1:38:41And Hemkin jumps ahead 0-1-1.
- 1:38:43Layers at third.
- 1:38:45Bernie Williams at second.
- 1:38:46Gallego at first.
- 1:38:48Layers.
- 1:38:50And Gags have walked and Bernie singled up the middle.
- 1:38:58Hemkin has walked three, struck out four, giving up six hits.
- 1:39:04Here's the 0-1.
- 1:39:06Cut on him.
- 1:39:07That's breaking ball.
- 1:39:08And he's got 0-2.
- 1:39:17Good news for the Yankees.
- 1:39:18X-rays on Mike Stanley's right hand were negative.
- 1:39:21By the way, he was wincing in pain.
- 1:39:24That is good news.
- 1:39:27You would have thought it would have broken a finger, huh?
- 1:39:29Yeah.
- 1:39:31That really is good news for the Yankees.
- 1:39:39It'll be an 0-2.
- 1:39:41Bases loaded two out in the sixth pitch.
- 1:39:43Check swing foul back.
- 1:39:59You know, Rick Down... I'm sorry, John, Rick Down always says that with two strikes, people think that a hitter has to be careful up there.
- 1:40:05But with two strikes, he really has to be more aggressive.
- 1:40:08He's got a swing of pitches that are close, not right over the play.
- 1:40:11He can't afford to take a strike.
- 1:40:13Sure.
- 1:40:14I'm just about to say the same thing in a different way.
- 1:40:16This one, Hemkin, is dangerous because his high fastball is almost unhittable pitch.
- 1:40:21That pitch is way over Kelly's head in the count.
- 1:40:24Want to know, it was a breaking ball without bite.
- 1:40:28But you know he's going to throw the fastball up the ladder.
- 1:40:32They call it moving it up the ladder when he throws a little bit out of the strike zone.
- 1:40:36Maybe a little higher than chest high.
- 1:40:38Tough to lay off.
- 1:40:39The 1-2.
- 1:40:40Curveball is lined.
- 1:40:41It's set to be a hit as a base hit.
- 1:40:44Layered scores.
- 1:40:45Herdy Williams scores a two-run, two-out single for Pat Kelly.
- 1:40:50And the Yankees take a 6-5 lead.
- 1:40:58It just shows you, Mike, that even the major leaguers make mistakes.
- 1:41:02Why would he throw a slow curveball when he's got that kind of fastball, rising fastball up?
- 1:41:09Just amazing to me.
- 1:41:11You let it hitter like Kelly swing in a curveball.
- 1:41:13You're doing him a favor.
- 1:41:15Well, the book on Kelly is that he can also hit the fastball, but I agree with you.
- 1:41:19Henkens fastball so overpowering.
- 1:41:21Why mess with a breaking pitch?
- 1:41:23Let's give Kelly some credit.
- 1:41:25He got a pitch he could drive and he did.
- 1:41:32The pitch to Bologna is a strike.
- 1:41:34Hey, you know how I mentioned the last nine games, the Yankees have averaged 40.
- 1:41:39I'm going to have it broken out, but I think the total is 363.
- 1:41:44Well, they drew 37 today.
- 1:41:48The pitch is bounced up the middle off Henkens' hand.
- 1:41:51Fielded it short and touched by Schofield down the bag to end the inning.
- 1:41:55Now the Yankees get off the deck with two outs and no one on, get two runs on two hits.
- 1:42:04And lead two, and now at the end of six, it is 6-5, Yanks.
- 1:42:17What am I going to make if this jobs?
- 1:42:20I'm going to try to have it figured out.
- 1:42:22In the last ten games, the Yankees might have drawn exactly with a 37 today, 400,000.
- 1:42:28Pat Borders leads off the seventh and takes a breaking ball strike from Perez.
- 1:42:33The Yanks with two last inning lead it 6-5.
- 1:42:36Now we go to the final three innings of today and who knows?
- 1:42:40And with a play by play, here's Michael K.
- 1:42:42Thank you, John.
- 1:42:43Borders is 0-2.
- 1:42:44They're back to the mound in the second and grounded to second in the fifth.
- 1:42:48So the Yankees come back for the second time.
- 1:42:50They lead 6-5, 5-5 and OJ is 6-7 and 1, Yanks.
- 1:42:54The 0-1.
- 1:42:55There's a strike with a splitter on the outside part of the plate, 0-2.
- 1:43:01Borders is number nine in the order now, 2-53.
- 1:43:06Three home runs and 26 runs batted in.
- 1:43:08The 0-2 swung on a miss on the splitter.
- 1:43:10Larritz blocks it, picks it up and tags Borders one away.
- 1:43:17Borders down on strike and here is Schofield.
- 1:43:21Schofield's 1-2 with a walk and a stolen base.
- 1:43:24Singlede center field in the third and he sandwiched around that a base on balls in the fifth
- 1:43:31and a ground ball to second in the first.
- 1:43:33Boggs even with the bag at third.
- 1:43:36Schofield a threat to Bunt.
- 1:43:39The pitch to Schofield.
- 1:43:41Breaking ball high, 1-0.
- 1:43:43Schofield as a leadoff batter is 6-4, 30.
- 1:43:48That's not good.
- 1:43:50Low on O.
- 1:43:52Blowing away to an O.
- 1:43:546-4, 30 would be, why am I blanking out, 3-4, 10.
- 1:44:022-4, 10, B-2, 100.
- 1:44:05The 2-0.
- 1:44:07There's a strike, 2-1.
- 1:44:12The Sun trying to peek through and overcast Sky.
- 1:44:16And it's doing a pretty good job right now.
- 1:44:18It's been in and out all day.
- 1:44:22John alluded to the crowd at 37,333.
- 1:44:26Here's the 2-1.
- 1:44:28A splitter a little bit outside, 3-1.
- 1:44:31Well my math is certainly lousy, but I believe that the Yankees through last night had drawn
- 1:44:36their last nine games 363.
- 1:44:38That would make it an even 400.
- 1:44:40The Yankees have averaged 40,000 people a game.
- 1:44:43The 3-1.
- 1:44:44Fastball inside.
- 1:44:45Schofield walks for the second straight time.
- 1:44:48Why you do that, I don't know.
- 1:44:51But he's not trying to walk him.
- 1:44:53No he's not.
- 1:44:54But I mean that's not good enough to say that he's trying to throw strikes.
- 1:44:57And now Billy Connors comes out to get the bullpen sometime.
- 1:45:00Dick Schofield is a non-hitter and has always been a non-hitter.
- 1:45:03And you can't walk him.
- 1:45:05And Perez has now walked him two times in a row.
- 1:45:08And every time a walk has gotten him in trouble.
- 1:45:11Every single time.
- 1:45:13So now Bob Wickman is warming up.
- 1:45:16Now that's a direct invitation to trouble.
- 1:45:19The Yankees are fortunate that Robbie Alomar left the game two innings ago.
- 1:45:23And now Domingo Sedeno, a sweatshooter batting left, will come up.
- 1:45:28But he's certainly not Robbie Alomar.
- 1:45:31While he was in there Alomar was 0-4-3 and didn't look as if he was really into it.
- 1:45:36Maybe he was injured.
- 1:45:37We have not received any word whatsoever on why he was taken out of the lineup.
- 1:45:42So Domingo Sedeno, 200 hitter with 10 ribbies.
- 1:45:52Batting left-handed against the right-handed Perez.
- 1:45:55Wickman warming up in the Yankee pen.
- 1:45:58The pitch to Sedeno is a breaking ball outside.
- 1:46:01We want to know.
- 1:46:04Bonds in on the grass at third.
- 1:46:11Sedeno on top of the plate but deep in the box.
- 1:46:16Mattingly holds Schofield and Perez goes over there and Schofield's back.
- 1:46:21Snapple natural beverages, America's natural sodas, iced teas, juices, juice drinks,
- 1:46:26and sports drinks for people of all ages.
- 1:46:28Snapple made from the best stuff on earth.
- 1:46:34Here's the 1-0.
- 1:46:36Fastball outside 2-0.
- 1:46:38Yankees lead 6-5 in what may be the final game of the season.
- 1:46:43We don't know.
- 1:46:45We hope not.
- 1:46:57Perez fires over.
- 1:47:00Schofield back.
- 1:47:01The stadium does look great.
- 1:47:03The grounds crew has done a great job on the field this year.
- 1:47:05It's a perfect green.
- 1:47:08Moden checkerboard in the infield and stripes in the outfield.
- 1:47:12The 2-0.
- 1:47:15Fastball high 3-0.
- 1:47:23The outfield wall a perfect light blue.
- 1:47:27The white facade over the ads and the scoreboards in the outfield.
- 1:47:32It's a beautiful ballpark.
- 1:47:33The 3-0.
- 1:47:34Way outside and Perez walks in.
- 1:47:37So he walks two batters with one out.
- 1:47:40And now runners on first and second and one of the better hitters in baseball coming to the plate, Paul Molitor.
- 1:47:49Molitor's one for three.
- 1:47:50He grounded the third and the first.
- 1:47:52Flied out to center in the third and singled the center and scored in the sixth inning.
- 1:47:56And Buck Showalter has seen quite enough.
- 1:47:59Out of the bullpen he signals for Bob Wickman.
- 1:48:01We'll take a brief timeout.
- 1:48:03Please stay with us.

- 1:50:05Tonight on Eye to Eye, how far would you go to protect your home?
- 1:50:09Bodies was coming out of the wind. Dead people.
- 1:50:12It took an army to tame the apartment house from hell.
- 1:50:15We do what we have to do.
- 1:50:17Now the crooks are gone and everyone's safe.
- 1:50:19We have been through a lot.
- 1:50:21But is there such a thing as too safe?
- 1:50:23You're not supposed to play ball in the hallway. Thank you.
- 1:50:26Eye to Eye with Connie Chung. Tonight at 9 on WCBS-TV, Channel 2.
- 1:50:38So Bob Wickman comes on, try to stop the bleeding right here.
- 1:50:42Or stop from bleeding because the Yankees still have the lead, 6-5.
- 1:50:46But the Blue Jays have runners on first and second.
- 1:50:48And Paul Molitor coming to the play.
- 1:50:51Wickman's had a great year so far. 5-4, 3.07.
- 1:50:55This is his 53rd game by far the most of any Yankee.
- 1:50:5867 in the third inning's pitch.
- 1:51:0151 hits, 23 earned runs. He's allowed three home runs.
- 1:51:05Walked 26, struck out 54.
- 1:51:08And opponents are hitting 2-10 on Bob Wickman.
- 1:51:11Here's Molitor.
- 1:51:14Hitting 3-44, 14 home runs and 75 runs batted in.
- 1:51:19This was one of the great free agent signings in a long, long time.
- 1:51:23And really it's this signing that really kicked in the small market teams screaming.
- 1:51:27Because Bud Selig wanted to keep Molitor and he simply couldn't compete with what the Blue Jays offered.
- 1:51:33The pitch to Molitor is a strike on the outside corner.
- 1:51:37A fastball all in one.
- 1:51:39Wickman started him off with the 4th seamer up in the zone.
- 1:51:51Boggs very close to third base.
- 1:51:53Leo 1 swung on and chopped over the head of Wickman.
- 1:51:56There'll be one play. Kelly Field fires him out and he won away.
- 1:52:00Check that. Two away.
- 1:52:02And the runners move up.
- 1:52:05Borders have started the inning with a strikeout.
- 1:52:07So now both runners are in scoring position for Joe Carter, one of the best RBI men in the major leagues.
- 1:52:13It was a sinker and Molitor just got a piece off the end of the bat.
- 1:52:17Once it went over the head of Wickman, you knew there was only one play.
- 1:52:20That was the first.
- 1:52:23Carter is 0-4-3. Lined out to short in the second. Fouled out to Mattingly in the third and struck out in the sixth.
- 1:52:32Schofield at third and Cedeno at second. Two outs here, top of the seventh inning. Yankees lead 6-5.
- 1:52:40Wickman, the pitch, swung on and blooped again toward first base. Mattingly giving chase. He can't make the play.
- 1:52:48He plays it on a hop.
- 1:52:51In foul territory near the first base coaching box, Mattingly for the right-handed batter is playing way off the line.
- 1:52:58So he got a good jump, but he could not even attempt to dive on that one. He had no chance.
- 1:53:06Carter almost fisted it out there. That's exactly what he did.
- 1:53:17Boggs again close to the line at third.
- 1:53:20Here's the 0-1. Fastball inside, 1-1. Carter a 2-69 hitter.
- 1:53:26He has 26 home runs and again 102 runs batted in.
- 1:53:33He's got two more ribbies right out there in the person of Schofield and Cedeno.
- 1:53:39The 1-1 swung on and driven deep to center field, but Bernie Williams has room.
- 1:53:44Moving toward left center, he makes the play for the final out of the inning, so Wickman comes in and does a great job.
- 1:53:50No runs, no hits, no errors, and two left at the end of 6-1 half. The Yankees lead the Jays 6-5.
- 1:54:01Well the 7th of the stretch that you just enjoyed, it was brought to you by Channel Home Center's Neighbor of Neighbors since 1908.
- 1:54:11Danny Cox is on. He was injured for most of the season and that really really wreaked havoc in the Blue Jays bullpen.
- 1:54:20Since coming back he's done a good job. This is his 10th game. He's 1-1, 1.72 ERA.
- 1:54:2615 and two third innings pitched, seven hits, three iron runs, walked seven, struck out 14, opponents hitting 135.
- 1:54:39Call of the Yankees year-round on the pages of Yankees magazine for a special introductory rate of just $14.97.

- 1:54:57So they bring in Cox and he'll face two left-handed batters.
- 1:55:01And Danny Tartable, the first one, Wade Boggs, one for two with a sack fly.
- 1:55:05Pitch to Boggs is a strike. Boggs hitting 342, 11 home runs and 55 runs batted in.
- 1:55:13Leo Wang swung on and popped up left side.
- 1:55:21Darnell Cole's looking into the sun and making the catch for the first out of the inning.
- 1:55:27Here's O'Neal, 0 for 2 with a walk and a run scored.
- 1:55:31Scooter, the Phil Rizzuto story is a 45-minute video collectible that every Yankee fan will treasure.
- 1:55:37The tape covers the Scooter from his San Juan days in Brooklyn up to his recent election into the Hall of Fame.
- 1:55:43The cost is only $24.95. And to order with a credit card call 1-800-9-YANKS-9.
- 1:55:53O'Neal swings and misses in the splitter, oh and one.
- 1:56:09Cox underwent arthroscopic surgery at the end of March, March 26 to be exact.
- 1:56:15Leo Wang, O'Neal squares the bunt and takes a strike right over the middle of the play, oh and two.
- 1:56:21And the surgery was to repair an impingement in his right shoulder.
- 1:56:27He began a rehab with Dunedin on June 27th and then he was called up to Toronto.
- 1:56:33The 0-2 swung on and grounded right side.
- 1:56:36Siddeño off his glove, trickles into right field, we'll see how they score that.
- 1:56:40O'Neal on first.
- 1:56:45I wonder how they'll score that, that could be a base hit, it wasn't an easy play.
- 1:56:48And then a 7-error, E-4.
- 1:56:51Oh boy, after last night's shot off Mattingly was called an error, I guess that has to be an error.
- 1:57:05Here's Danny Tartabal, he's 1-for-3 but the 1 was a big one.
- 1:57:09A 3-run home run in the third.
- 1:57:12And what a shot it was.
- 1:57:1519 home runs now and 67 runs banded in.
- 1:57:20The pitcher was swung on and driven to right but foul.
- 1:57:25That'll make the seats.
- 1:57:30A fan just had a great sign about the strike.
- 1:57:34He said please don't strike, Colin.
- 1:57:37Stupid is as stupid does, which is Forrest Gump's favorite line.
- 1:57:41Yankees lead 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:58:005-5 and 1 Toronto, 6-7 and 1 Yankees.
- 1:58:03And Cox goes over to O'Rourke and O'Neill back in plenty of time.
- 1:58:18The 0 on to Tartabal, swung on a miss.
- 1:58:20Looked like a slider diving down and away, 0-2.
- 1:58:24On deck, Don Mattingly.
- 1:58:261-on, 1-out, Yankees lead by 1, bottom of the seventh.
- 1:58:42Cox steps off the rubber and fires the first and O'Neill's back. Why is he worried about O'Neill?
- 1:59:00Tartabal set, close stance, bent at the knees.
- 1:59:04The 0-2, swung on and grounded to third.
- 1:59:06Filled it there by Spray, goes to second for 1, back to first.
- 1:59:09Not in time. Tartabal beat it out.
- 1:59:13So score that a force, 5-4 for the second out and that'll bring up Mattingly.
- 1:59:18Mattingly 1-3.
- 1:59:21Single to center in the second, lined out to third in the third. And flat out to center in the sixth. He gets a big hand.
- 1:59:39Hitting 3-0-5, six home runs and 51 runs batted in. On deck, Jim Larritz.
- 1:59:54Now, Pipsa Mattingly outside 1-0. Is this Mattingly's last at bat? Well, he certainly played with the possibility.
- 2:00:03He said that if it's a long strike, this might be his very last game and this could be his last at bat.
- 2:00:10If the Yankees hold on to the lead, then he doesn't bat in the eighth.
- 2:00:15That would be sad. Here's the 1-0.
- 2:00:18There's a strike on the inside corner, 1-1.
- 2:00:40Cox over the first and Tartabal back. Does Cox just throw the first because he wants to? Tartabal and O'Neill aren't going anywhere.
- 2:00:54Cox again goes over the first. Tartabal had maybe a step and a half lead.
- 2:01:15Cox sends it to Bell, deals the 1-1. Blown away, 2-1.
- 2:01:21The Blue Jays scored two in the second. The Yankees answered with four in the third.
- 2:01:26The Blue Jays came back with three in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.
- 2:01:30And the Yankees immediately came back with two in the bottom of the sixth and that's where we stand right now.
- 2:01:35Yankees lead by 1-6-5.
- 2:01:40O'Rourke holding Tartabal at first.
- 2:01:43The 2-1 to Mattingly. Swan and line foul. Third base side into the second deck.
- 2:01:48The count is even at 2-2.
- 2:01:56In front of Mattingly's locker, two huge boxes with all of his belongings.
- 2:02:01And not only Mattingly, every player has packed as if this is the last day of the season.
- 2:02:07Fan letters, personal belongings, souvenirs, signed baseballs, all in those boxes.
- 2:02:14The only thing they can't take, their Yankee uniform. That belongs to the Yankees.
- 2:02:21Cox over to first and Tartabal back.
- 2:02:42The 2-2 to Mattingly. Just missed with a fastball outside, 3-2.
- 2:02:48So that will release Tartabal at first. O'Rourke trying to get Cox's attention, telling him he'll play behind him.
- 2:02:54Play halfway. Cox acknowledges O'Rourke and O'Rourke will back up behind the runner.
- 2:03:11The runner goes, the 3-2 to Swan and foul back. They'll do it again.
- 2:03:30All the baseballs have been signed. They put the baseballs into the sanitary hose.
- 2:03:37And they wrap them up in time at the top and 5 or 6, 10 could fit in one sanitary hose.
- 2:03:44They have those, they have them in boxes of a dozen.
- 2:03:48It really does feel like the end of the season and it's very, very strange here in August.
- 2:03:53The 3-2 runner goes, swung on and popped up right field.
- 2:03:57Carter right there, the Sun squinting against his glasses. He makes the play for the final out of the inning.
- 2:04:03Yankees, no runs, no hits, one error and one left at the end of seven-full. The Yankees 6, the Blue Jays 5.
- 2:04:19The first pitch to O'Rourke is outside 1-0. Yankees lead 6-5 as we go to the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:04:275-5 and 1 to Rondo, 6-7 and 1 Yankees, Wickman on the mound and Sterling behind the mic.
- 2:04:32And the pitch is a strike at the knees on the outside.
- 2:04:36You know Mike, you look at this lineup and O'Rourke is the worry for the Yankees here.
- 2:04:44Wickman doesn't want to walk him but he also doesn't want to give him anything and get hit out and tie the game.
- 2:04:48I'll tell you why in a moment. The 1-1 is lined to center field.
- 2:04:52On the run is Burnie, has to play it on a hop and it gets by him.
- 2:04:55It rolls all the way toward the warning track. O'Rourke around second, he'll go to third.
- 2:05:01Terrible sloppy play by the Yankees and O'Rourke has a three base hit.
- 2:05:07Could be a single and a two base error. Burnie put on the brakes, slipped and the ball went past him.
- 2:05:13So it should have been a single to center field has turned into three bases and there's the tying run.
- 2:05:19Now I was just about to say that when you look at the rest of the lineup,
- 2:05:23they are weakish right hand hitters against a guy who gets right handed.
- 2:05:27His right hand is Bob Wickman and they had seven batters before they get to the good hitters in Molitor and Carter.
- 2:05:35And you only have two innings.
- 2:05:37What was Burnie's deal, jogging after that ball after it went past him?
- 2:05:41He didn't go very hard after that.
- 2:05:43Yankees play the infield back.
- 2:05:45Now O'Rourke takes a strike. If I'm my cup, I choke up and play pepper.
- 2:05:49With a shortstop to second baseman and the game is tied.
- 2:05:52The Yankees are playing the infield back except for Bob and they will allow the tying run to score.
- 2:05:57The 0-1 inside. I don't get that either. Inside corner strike two in the count 0-2.
- 2:06:02I don't get it either.
- 2:06:03With a guy on third, if they bring the infield in and the guy singles through the infield,
- 2:06:07he'd just have a runner on first.
- 2:06:09Now what do they call that?
- 2:06:11There's no error put up.
- 2:06:13There's no error. So it's a triple. Isn't that amazing?
- 2:06:16It was a single to center field and Burnie got too close.
- 2:06:19Tried to put the bricks on the pitch low.
- 2:06:23In this, now they bring the infield in with two strikes.
- 2:06:26If I'm on the first couple of pitches, I would have choked up and played pepper with a shortstop to get the tying run in.
- 2:06:32That's the old La Russa play right there with two strikes they were charging.
- 2:06:36Here's the 1-2. Now they're up and the pitch is grounded foul outside of third.
- 2:06:42What they wanted him to do was do what you were telling him to do.
- 2:06:45And just choke up and try to hit the baseball on the ground.
- 2:06:49And then they would charge and make the play at home.
- 2:06:52So O'Rourke gets a gift triple.
- 2:06:57The Yankees threw away another run when Polonia, for no reason at all, wound up left field through the ball into the Toronto dugout.
- 2:07:03Here's the 1-2. It's in the dirt, blocked by La Russa.
- 2:07:08The count's 2-2, slider in the dirt.
- 2:07:12In other words, after O'Rourke you had Huff, Cole, Sprague, Borders, Schofield, Sedanier.
- 2:07:21And you gotta figure that Wickman and Howe get those guys out.
- 2:07:26There's a tying run at third with no one out here in the eighth.
- 2:07:29It'll be a 2-2 to Huff.
- 2:07:32Wickman deals. Just missed outside.
- 2:07:36And the count's 3-2.
- 2:07:40I have some questions for you. I don't think you can answer them, but I'd love you to try.
- 2:07:54The tying run at third, no one out, top of the eighth. Here's the 3-2. It's bounce foul.
- 2:08:00What happens to the Toronto players today?
- 2:08:04Explain that to me. The game is over. It's 3-30 in New York about it.
- 2:08:08Now about, I'd say the game's over 4-30.
- 2:08:12Okay, what happens? They go to the hotel? Right.
- 2:08:16And they what, await word at midnight?
- 2:08:18They await word, and once midnight approaches or reaches and they're on strike.
- 2:08:22Payoff is hit on the ground, up the middle, knocked down.
- 2:08:26Gallego feels, throws in time, on a great play.
- 2:08:29And O'Rourke doesn't run well, never left third.
- 2:08:32Wickman either missed or got a piece.
- 2:08:35Kelly knocked it down and luckily deflected it to Gallego, who threw out Hubb.
- 2:08:41Once he sees Kelly on the ground, he should be going,
- 2:08:44because what's the likelihood of him getting thrown out?
- 2:08:47That's awful base running in the Yankees. We're very lucky.
- 2:08:50Very. So the Yankees continue to play up.
- 2:08:53And here's Dornell Coles who swings at Hammerswine.
- 2:08:56Base hit inside a third down the left field line.
- 2:08:59It comes rule double. Someone tested O'Rourke's scores and we're all tied at six.
- 2:09:06Dornell Coles immediately ties it as he rams a pitch inside third.
- 2:09:11Let's face it, this inning never should have happened.
- 2:09:14But it did. You know, one more thing.
- 2:09:17It's free.
- 2:09:21After O'Rourke got the base hit, if he's at first, that hot shot up the middle
- 2:09:26probably becomes a DP because the infield's back.
- 2:09:30Well, Coles knocks in the run with a double.
- 2:09:34Here's Ed Sprague. We're tied at six.
- 2:09:37Wickman deals. Sprague takes the strike.
- 2:09:39Now Sprague and Pat Borders have a chance to knock in the go-ahead run.
- 2:09:44So let's go continue. So the ballplayers stay in New York tonight.
- 2:09:47The Toronto players stay in New York and then await word.
- 2:09:51Right. They get word. Once they're on strike, then the Blue Jays stop at that moment
- 2:09:55paying for their hotel.
- 2:09:58So if they want to stay, they're at the grand high, they would have to stay and pay for themselves.
- 2:10:03And they have to get home on their own. They're left to their own devices.
- 2:10:06Nothing is done by the players. No, no question about that.
- 2:10:09I mean by the owners or the traveling secretary. That's not happening.
- 2:10:14But they stay here until they know the strike is in effect.
- 2:10:18And then they can either stay or go home.
- 2:10:25Well, just this is an afternoon game. That's why I wonder.
- 2:10:29The O-1 is taken outside. Does the strike, does it actually happen on the stroke of midnight?
- 2:10:34Is there a gong that sounds, okay, we're on strike, we don't play anymore?
- 2:10:38The gong sounds the final out of that game in Oakland.
- 2:10:48Darnell Coles was very good speed, leads off second. He's the go-ahead run.
- 2:10:52We're tied at six in the eighth.
- 2:10:54Quickman bluffs towards second.
- 2:10:56You know what I don't understand? I don't have the answer to this.
- 2:11:00The players go home, right?
- 2:11:03And then the strike is settled in a week.
- 2:11:06Does the team pay for them to get to where they have to be?
- 2:11:09That I don't know.
- 2:11:12It'll be a 1-1 strike. I have a better question.
- 2:11:18Let's say the strike is settled this weekend, which happens after a day or two.
- 2:11:23You see this in the real world all the time.
- 2:11:27And the players are in Birdbath, Montana and North Overshoe, Vermont.
- 2:11:34Where do they go? What game is scheduled?
- 2:11:38They just pick up a season?
- 2:11:40That'll be a 1-2 to Spray.
- 2:11:44I think if there's two games or three games missed,
- 2:11:48in all likelihood they'll try to make those games up some way.
- 2:11:53That'll be a 1-2 to Spray.
- 2:11:57Quickman deals high. I mean, do they say, how do I?
- 2:12:01Let's say in a city, let's say the transit workers are on strike.
- 2:12:05Well, strike is over and you report to work whatever the next day is,
- 2:12:09Wednesday, Thursday at 9 or whatever.
- 2:12:13But in baseball they're all going home to every point in this country.
- 2:12:17It'll be a 2-2 to Spray.
- 2:12:20Quickman deals foul to it.
- 2:12:23Okay, they're going to resume. The strike is settled Friday afternoon.
- 2:12:26And they're going to resume with the Saturday games.
- 2:12:30Is that what they do or do they...?
- 2:12:32That's all part of the settlement.
- 2:12:34If there is a settlement, I'm sure that will all be discussed.
- 2:12:38Once again,
- 2:12:48Quickman will deal 2-2 to the right-hand-hitting Ed Spray.
- 2:12:51Fetch. Hit on the ground. Wide at first.
- 2:12:54Kelly feels in the first base hole. Flips to Mattingly two away.
- 2:12:57Coles goes to third.
- 2:12:59So there's the go-ahead run at third with two outs for right-hand-hitting catcher Pat Waters.
- 2:13:04She loves a guy who plays hard, slides in headfirst, and is into leather.
- 2:13:09English Leather, the official clone of the New York Yankees baseball radio network,
- 2:13:13available at a Walgreens near you.
- 2:13:23Waters over three.
- 2:13:26He is a right-hand-hitter.
- 2:13:29And, Quickman deals low.
- 2:13:32Layritz blocked it successfully.
- 2:13:34McCown 1-0. Coles the go-ahead run at third.
- 2:13:39Scott Kamenicki continues to warm in the Yankees bullpen.
- 2:13:43The Yankees in the bottom of the eighth will have 6, 7, and 8.
- 2:13:47Layritz, Bernie Williams, and Gallego.
- 2:13:53Quickman to the plate. Foul to it.
- 2:13:56The totals are identical. 6, 7, and 1 were in the top of the eighth.
- 2:13:59Two outs. The go-ahead run at third base.
- 2:14:16The 1-1 is bounced foul outside of first.
- 2:14:21Waters has had some weak hacks at Quickman's pitches, kind of fending off the pitches.
- 2:14:26And he's behind 1 and 2, looking for something he can hit.
- 2:14:43Now the right-hander is set. He'll deal 1-2. Pitch.
- 2:14:47Scott Kamenicki. However, Toronto picks up the tying run.
- 2:14:531 run, 2 hits. They leave 1 at the end of 7-1-1.
- 2:14:56We're tied at 6.
- 2:15:00On the members-only scoreboard, it's still raining in Detroit.
- 2:15:03Milwaukee and Detroit being held up.
- 2:15:05Wegman against Moore when it does start, if it does start.
- 2:15:08And tonight, the American League, 7-35 start.
- 2:15:11Boston against Baltimore.
- 2:15:12C-League and Perot in Seattle at Oakland, 10-05. Johnson against Darling.
- 2:15:17In the National League, the Dodgers have defeated the Reds 2-0.
- 2:15:20Tim Wallach, a home run, is 23rd.
- 2:15:22Ramon Martinez goes to 12-7.
- 2:15:24Jose Rio drops to 9-6. He takes the loss.
- 2:15:28San Diego 6 and Houston 3. Bottom of the 6, Derrick Bell is 14th.
- 2:15:32Hamilton still in there for San Diego.
- 2:15:34Swindell started for Houston.
- 2:15:36Varus came in in the third. Reynolds in the fifth.
- 2:15:395-0 Firestorm has Atlanta at Colorado. Maddox against Painter.
- 2:15:43Maddox 15-6, going for number 16.
- 2:15:47Danny Cox deals a fastball inside to Laird's, and we're underway bottom of the 8.
- 2:15:51Yankees and Toronto tied at 6.
- 2:15:54Laird's replaced Mike Stanley, caught a foul tip on the hand.
- 2:15:57Everything is apparently okay.
- 2:15:59The 1-0.
- 2:16:00Brittenball cut on and missed.
- 2:16:02Cox has a very good slider. This is outfitch.
- 2:16:05Fastball-slider combination.
- 2:16:09Laird's has one appearance. He walked.
- 2:16:12And that, with two outs and no one on, he walked.
- 2:16:15And that triggered the Yankees to run sixth.
- 2:16:18The 1-1 outside. That gave the Yankees the lead.
- 2:16:21They lost that.
- 2:16:23And the 8th were tied at 6 here in the bottom of the 8.
- 2:16:26Now the rest of the NL Slade John is at night. Mets at Philly.
- 2:16:29The Met players have rented a bus, by the way,
- 2:16:32to take them home from Philly if there is a strike tonight.
- 2:16:35It'll be Hakamay against Valenzuela, Montreal to Pittsburgh,
- 2:16:38Henry against Smith, and St. Louis at Florida.
- 2:16:41Joe Robbie Stadium, Tewksbury, 12-10 against Rapp, 7-7.
- 2:16:45That's the members only.
- 2:16:47That breaking ball in for a strike to Laird's.
- 2:16:49He did not think. So McCown even at 2-2.
- 2:16:52It'll be Laird's, Bernie Williams, and Guy Eggo
- 2:16:55here in the bottom of the 8.
- 2:17:09Now here's the 2-2. Hit on the ground at third.
- 2:17:14The long throw across by Sprague is in time.
- 2:17:16There's one away.
- 2:17:18Head over to Macy's and see their wide selection of the ultimate men's fashion
- 2:17:21from the leader members only.
- 2:17:23See the great array of members only jackets, clothes,
- 2:17:26that are stylish as well as comfortable.
- 2:17:28And remember, Macy's and members only urge you to do clothes and not drugs.
- 2:17:40Now one away, here's Bernie.
- 2:17:44He is 1-4-3 on the night.
- 2:17:51Sprague steals and the breaking ball is in for a strike in the count-0-1.
- 2:18:09That missed outside. The count-1-1.
- 2:18:27The mall game gone back and forth.
- 2:18:29Toronto scoring 2 in the second on a 2-on-triple by Sprague.
- 2:18:32Yankee scored 4 in the third.
- 2:18:34Boggs scored one with a sack fly.
- 2:18:36Charterball a 3-run home run. The Yanks had a 4-2 lead.
- 2:18:39But Toronto came back in the sixth with 3, the final run scoring
- 2:18:44when Colonia for no apparent reason threw the ball and the Toronto dug out
- 2:18:48after a sack fly.
- 2:18:50Here's the 1-1. It's fouled down the third base line out of play.
- 2:18:55But Toronto had a lead.
- 2:18:57And the Yankees scored 2 in the sixth to regain the lead.
- 2:19:00Pat Kelly had a 2-run single with the bases loaded.
- 2:19:04A 2-out rally.
- 2:19:062 walks and a single loaded them up and Kelly had the 2-run line drive
- 2:19:13single to center to make it 6-5.
- 2:19:16Then Toronto scored a run in the eighth and here we are.
- 2:19:19The 1-2. That bounced up there.
- 2:19:25And the count 2-2.
- 2:19:48The 2-2. That just missed outside and the count goes full 3-2.
- 2:19:55If Bernie gets on, you might have the chance for a stolen base
- 2:20:02to put him in scoring position.
- 2:20:05It'll be a 3-2 from Danny Cox to Bernie Williams.
- 2:20:081-out, no one on, bottom of the eighth tied at 6.
- 2:20:11Here's the payoff. It's bounced toward second.
- 2:20:14And here's what Cadenio feels. He throws out Bernie and there are 2-way.
- 2:20:19Here's Mike Gallego.
- 2:20:402-2 and here's Gallego.
- 2:20:50Gags over 2 with a walk. He takes low.
- 2:20:53That walk was a big one. 2-out walk on a 3-2 pitch from Hemkin to load them up
- 2:20:58and Kelly had the 2-run single.
- 2:21:08Here's the 1-0 and hit him.
- 2:21:11Oh boy, and hit him on the arm.
- 2:21:14The last thing Danny wanted to do was hit somebody with 2-outs
- 2:21:17and put the go-ahead run on base.
- 2:21:20So Steve Donahue trots out to administer to Gallego.
- 2:21:26Buck Showalter comes out.
- 2:21:31It was a fastball inside and it hit Gallego right on the arm.
- 2:21:35It may have hit him on the elbow, which would hurt like, you know what?
- 2:21:41Hit him in the same spot that Danny Tartabot got hit.
- 2:21:45If you would fold your arm or make a muscle right in the corner, right there,
- 2:21:51not quite on the elbow but right above it, and that could certainly sting.
- 2:21:56And the ball kept tallying in on Gallego, kept coming in, in, in.
- 2:21:59He could not get out of the way.
- 2:22:01Now he's holding his arm straight out, Steve Donahue taking a look.
- 2:22:05Trying to see if he has feeling in his hand.
- 2:22:11And it looks like he's going to stay in.
- 2:22:18Well, the Yankees have the go-ahead run at first with 2-outs.
- 2:22:21Gallego down to base. He will not be running.
- 2:22:24The Yankees decide to put out a hit-and-run at some point.
- 2:22:27He stays in the game and hears Kelly, who's had a bunch single that triggered
- 2:22:31the 4-run rally in the third, and then the line-drive single to center field
- 2:22:36to knock in 2 that culminated the 2-run rally in the sixth.
- 2:22:44The Yankees and Blue Jays tied at 6 near the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:22:50This does one thing for the Yanks. Even if Kelly makes out,
- 2:22:53it pushes the lineup around to the top of the order for the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:23:02Cox steals and the pitch is striking.
- 2:23:05And if Kelly does make out, ironically, both teams will go to the ninth inning
- 2:23:09with the top of their order.
- 2:23:12But the Yankees, with Alomar out of the game, much more productive top of the order.
- 2:23:16You have 2 guys, Schofield and Sedanio, at this point not great hitters, certainly,
- 2:23:21than Malagor, batting third, who is a great hitter.
- 2:23:26The Yankees would have Polonia, Boggs and O'Neal.
- 2:23:33Toronto has 2 lefties in the bullpen. One is old friend Dave Rigetti.
- 2:23:36The other is Tony Castillo. Castillo does more of the late-inning work.
- 2:23:44It'll be an 0-1 to Kelly.
- 2:23:47Cox steals and Kelly takes the pitch high, 1-1.
- 2:23:52Kelly just trying to get on base. That would put up a pretty good lefty hitter,
- 2:23:55a 300-hitter in Polonia, to try to get the base hit to give the Yankees a lead.
- 2:24:00You know, with this 2-run single, John, Kelly and Gallego both now have 41 rubies.
- 2:24:05That's not bad for 8-9.
- 2:24:08Yeah, especially with 50 games to go. And what does Villardi have?
- 2:24:12He must have around there.
- 2:24:25Let me see here.
- 2:24:28Villardi has 34 and 9 home runs.
- 2:24:33No, it's very, a very productive group.
- 2:24:37Kelly is hitting around 280.
- 2:24:40Gallego around 240.
- 2:24:43And Villardi must be in the 270s, I would think.
- 2:24:46And also John from shortstop alone, 10 home runs and 52 rubies.
- 2:24:50From second base, 4 home runs and 50 rubies.
- 2:24:57It'll be a 1-1 to Kelly.
- 2:25:00He takes a strike.
- 2:25:02Villardi hitting 279 at this moment. So you have two guys hitting 280.
- 2:25:07One of them has 9 home runs.
- 2:25:10That's very productive. And that's just your 8 and 9. It is your second baseman in shortstop.
- 2:25:20Gallego the baserunner at first. There are two men out at the bottom of the 8.
- 2:25:24It'll be a 1-2 to Kelly.
- 2:25:28Danny Cox deals, swung on and popped up off of first.
- 2:25:33O'Rourke in foul territory. Has an easy play and makes the catch.
- 2:25:38No runs, no hits. One left. We go to the 9th, all tied at 6.
- 2:25:49Bob Wichman's first pitch fouled off by Dick Schofield.
- 2:25:52It'll be Schofield. Domingo Sedena, a switch hitter.
- 2:25:58Then Paul Molitor. Wichman deals inside.
- 2:26:03Count 1-1. We're tied at 6. Both teams 6, 7 and 1.
- 2:26:09Schofield is 1 for 2. He has singled his also.
- 2:26:12Walked twice. He's done a good job as a leadoff hitter today.
- 2:26:15Been on base three times.
- 2:26:17The 1-1. Cut on that. Missed.
- 2:26:20And a count 1 and 2. I would think the Yankees, they do not have anyone up.
- 2:26:23I would think the Yankees would have a lefty up to get ready for Old Rude
- 2:26:27if he hits this inning.
- 2:26:29The 1-2. He struck a mouse swing, slide her away.
- 2:26:43Ten seconds for station ID. This is New York Yankees baseball.
- 2:26:47Stay tuned following Yankee baseball. It's the Bob Grant Show right here on...
- 2:26:53W-A-B-C-New York.
- 2:27:05No one away. Here's Domingo Sedena.
- 2:27:09He takes a strike on the count 0-1.
- 2:27:19The workman to the plate outside 1 and 1.
- 2:27:26Big hitter to keep off base. Danio is switching to batting left.
- 2:27:29Hasn't played very much. Hitting in just 200. No homers, 10 RBIs.
- 2:27:34You have a great hitter on deck, Paul Molitor.
- 2:27:37Here's the 1-1. Missed outside 2 and 1.
- 2:27:55The fastball missed outside the count 3 and 1.
- 2:27:59Funny, the pitcher doesn't... well, he knows Domingo Sedena is not a threat.
- 2:28:06Domingo Sedena has been up at bat once this game. You know, he did. He walked.
- 2:28:09Now, Wickman behind 3-1.
- 2:28:12The pitch is low, ball 4.
- 2:28:14You are begging for trouble to walk a non-hitter against a Hall of Fame hitter, Paul Molitor.
- 2:28:20Amazing. That's, I guess, what makes the game unique.
- 2:28:24Peach Melba, Raspberry Royale, True Root Beer, Passion Supreme.
- 2:28:28There's nothing artificial about these great tasting sodas from Snapple Natural Beverages.
- 2:28:33Snapple America's all-natural sodas made from... Paul Molitor.
- 2:28:38The best stuff on earth.
- 2:28:41Sedena, prior to today, had been up 95 times. He had no home runs. He had 2 doubles, 3 triples.
- 2:28:55He's at first with 1 out, and here's Molitor.
- 2:29:00A hard ground ball, double play ball to short.
- 2:29:03Diago to Kelly 1 on the first double play.
- 2:29:066-4-3. No runs, no hits.
- 2:29:09And we go to the bottom of the ninth, all tied at 6.
- 2:29:12Well, we go to what could be the final half inning of baseball in 1994.
- 2:29:24Let's hope it's not. There could be plenty of innings following this.
- 2:29:28We could be playing 18 innings just today.
- 2:29:32That's right.
- 2:29:37Danny Cox stays on in his third inning of relief.
- 2:29:46And he will face the Lufties coming up.
- 2:29:49Meepolonia, Boggs, O'Neal.
- 2:29:52Spragan at third, and Louis takes a slider low 1-0.
- 2:29:56Meepolonia has doubled in 4 trips.
- 2:30:02That's set up. His doubles set up 4 runs for the Yanks in the third inning.
- 2:30:11Cox yields 1-0, hit on the ground a second. Sedena gets a nice hop, throws out Meepolonia 1 away.
- 2:30:18So 1 down, and here's Boggs.
- 2:30:21Now, Kelly Buntz signal a Bologna double, a sack fly by Boggs for one run.
- 2:30:27O'Neal walked in, Charleville hit a 3-run home run. Those were the first 4 Yankee runs.
- 2:30:35Some of the things that Donald Fehr said with the MSG Network, he said,
- 2:30:39Slowly but surely Dick Ravitch is shutting all the doors.
- 2:30:42This is where he wanted it from the beginning.
- 2:30:46Good job, Hy.
- 2:30:48And then Ravitch answered, I believe we are closer to a strike than we were 24 hours ago.
- 2:30:53We regret that the players see no reason to respond to our set of games problems in any way, shape or form.
- 2:31:00The Spin Doctors, the 1-0, low 2-0.
- 2:31:04Now, this should be interesting. Fehr and Ravitch are scheduled to appear together tonight on CNN's Larry King Live.
- 2:31:11They shouldn't do it.
- 2:31:15That's garbage. They should be meeting.
- 2:31:18It's a pretty good show.
- 2:31:21Maybe they can get it done right there on the show. Maybe you need a mediator, a guy who...
- 2:31:25So one of the guys doesn't crack. I don't think it's going to get done with the two of them looking at each other.
- 2:31:29I know what you're going to say, and I agree with you. They should be together negotiating.
- 2:31:32Yeah, they know how to get it done. They already know what to do.
- 2:31:36It's been spelled out quietly between the lines.
- 2:31:39The 2-0, Hy, on the count of 3-0.
- 2:31:43They do seem a little bit too amenable to appearing on every single show in the world.
- 2:31:49It's a little ridiculous.
- 2:31:50I couldn't agree more.
- 2:31:52They stop going on those dumb shows and instead work out a solution. The 3-0 is a strike on the count of 3-1.
- 2:32:00Strange. Almost seems like they don't want to get it done.
- 2:32:03They know what has to be done. They know where the compromise is. It's so simple.
- 2:32:10The 3-1 to Boggs. Hit on the ground foul outside of first, so we have a full count, 3-2, coming from Danny Cox to Wade Boggs.
- 2:32:18Bottom of the ninth, side of sixth.
- 2:32:21Now the payoff. Swung on and line toward left center. Huff on the run, makes the catch.
- 2:32:39And they're a two-way. You know what's really funny about it?
- 2:32:43The tremendous need for ravage and fear to portray themselves on their side as the good guys and the others the bad guys.
- 2:32:53Who cares? Just get it done. We're all bad guys.
- 2:32:57Two outs, no one on. They overload the right side of the infield for O'Neal.
- 2:33:14And the pitch got on a miss at a slide of going down. O'Neal, of course, is not about to go to left field for a base hit.
- 2:33:22That's not what the Yankees need. They need O'Neal to pump on the seats and win this ballgame.
- 2:33:29So Toronto is right at overloading the infield. The O'Wan have bounced up there. They have a count one-on-one.
- 2:33:37O'Neal, 0-3 with a walk.
- 2:33:50The 1-1. Another slide of low on the count two and one.
- 2:34:02The 2-1. O'Neal takes low on the count three and one. Danny Tarnable awaits on deck.
- 2:34:21O'Neal is 0-3 today with a walk and a run scored down to 3-61.
- 2:34:33There's the 3-1. It's chopped to first. O'Rood backs up fields, flips the cocks covering in time. That'll do it.
- 2:34:40We go to extra innings. Nothing across for the Yanks. At the end of nine, we're tied at six.
- 2:34:46Bob Wickman deals Joe Carter a pitch outside 1-0. We go to the tenth. We're tied at six.
- 2:34:52Then with the play-by-play, here's Michael Kaye. Thank you, John.
- 2:34:55Carter's 0-4. The pitch is lined into right center field. Base hit.
- 2:34:59Charging is Bernie Williams. He'll play it on a couple of hops and flip it back in.
- 2:35:03Carter on with a leadoff single here in the tenth inning.
- 2:35:09That'll bring up O'Rood. O'Rood is 2-3. He scored three times. Single to right in the second score.
- 2:35:15Grounded a short in the fourth. Walked and scored in the sixth and tripled and scored the sixth in tying run in the eighth inning.
- 2:35:23Buck Showalter's out, and that means Bob Wickman's out because Showalter has signaled to the bullpen for the left-hander.
- 2:35:30We'll be back in just a moment. This is New York Yankees baseball.
- 2:35:34Well, they bring on Steve Howe to try and keep the Blue Jays off the board.
- 2:35:40Howe is 3-0, 1.70. This is his 40th game. He has 15 saves.
- 2:35:45And bluntly put, he has had an outstanding year for the New York Yankees.
- 2:35:5037 innings, 25 hits, 7 walks, 17 strikeouts. He does nothing but throw strikes.
- 2:35:56In the first batter, he will face a very tough left-hander, John O'Rood.
- 2:36:00O'Rood, 2-96, 12 home runs and 67 runs batted in. Mattingly will hold Carter at first.
- 2:36:09And Howe throws over to first. Carter back.
- 2:36:12The reason they had Howe throw over to first, they wanted to see if O'Rood would square if he's bunting.
- 2:36:16But O'Rood did not give it away, or he's not bunting.
- 2:36:20Howe fakes to first and Carter hustles back.
- 2:36:39Howe sets it to the belt, the pitch to O'Rood. He tries to check his swing. Did he? No, he did not.
- 2:36:45And he did. Third base umpire Jim Evans.
- 2:36:50John Moore, the executive producer and director of Channel 11's fine telecast in the booth,
- 2:36:55already plotting his telecast tomorrow night, just in case there's a game.
- 2:37:02He can come down to Mantles too.
- 2:37:09Now from the third base side of the rubber, deals the 0-1, swung on and fouled away. Third base side, first row of the upper deck
- 2:37:16and a gentleman in a suit made the catch. Good play.
- 2:37:21Gray suit, red tie.
- 2:37:24And he'll be talking about that at work if he tells them that he was at the game.
- 2:37:31Darren Hall and Woody Williams warming for the Blue Jays in their bullpen, two right-handers.
- 2:37:39Howe takes a deep breath, he sets it to the belt and deals the 0-2.
- 2:37:43Strike three. O'Rood down looking on the outside corner. Great fastball, one away.
- 2:37:51That's a perfect pitch by Howe. Nothing O'Rood could do with it except look, and he did. Strike three.
- 2:37:58Here's Mike Huff. Huff is one for three. Two runs scored a walk, a double an RBI, and two ground balls to the infield.
- 2:38:09A righty batter this time against Steve Howe.
- 2:38:18The pitch to Huff. He squares the bunt, bunt's in front of the plate foul.
- 2:38:22Rolls behind the plate, 0-1. That was not a sacrifice bunt, that was a bunt for a base hit.
- 2:38:30Huff spells his name H-U-F-F, unlike the former Marlins pitcher Huff, H-O-U-G-H.
- 2:38:37Spells his name like the former great middle linebacker, the Giant Sam.
- 2:38:42Number 70.
- 2:38:44That man. Huff a 3-0-2 hitter, three home runs, 25 runs batted in. Howe checks the runner at first.
- 2:38:54The long look. The 0-1. Fastball a little bit low and inside, 1-1.
- 2:39:00The Blue Jays have six runs on eight hits and one error, and the Yankees 6-7-1.
- 2:39:04We're in the top of the 10th inning at Yankee Stadium on what could be the final game of the 94th season.
- 2:39:12And the two teams nodded at six.
- 2:39:18The 1-1. Fastball strike inside corner, 1-2. Howe puts it there, it can't be hit.
- 2:39:25If there's not a strike, this is the first of a four game set between these two teams.
- 2:39:30And when you looked at this series on the schedule, at the beginning of the year you thought,
- 2:39:35well this is going to be really important in the American League East and the Blue Jays are too far back.
- 2:39:42The 1-2. Just missed inside. 2-2. Almost the same pitch, but Howe brought it inside just a little bit more.
- 2:39:51The Jays coming into this game 17 games behind the Yankees in third place. 18 games in the loss column.
- 2:40:03Howe shakes off a sign, shakes off another sign from Laird, now finally gets one that he likes.
- 2:40:09And the 2-2. Swung on and booped in the right field, that's a base hit.
- 2:40:13Carter is heading to second. He'll stop right there as O'Neal fields quickly and fires back in.
- 2:40:18So Huff just fisted it through the right side of the infield for a base hit.
- 2:40:22And the Blue Jays have runners on first and second. And Darnell Cole is coming up.
- 2:40:31Cole is one for three, struck out looking in the second. Chopped two short in the fourth.
- 2:40:40Had a sack fly and an RBI in the sixth inning. And then had an RBI ground rule double in the eighth.
- 2:40:48A right handed batter. That's the ninth base hit for the Blue Jays.
- 2:40:56Boggs even with the bag at third, maybe a step or two behind and maybe six feet off the line.
- 2:41:03The pitch to Cole's. There's a strike on the outside corner, Owen Law.
- 2:41:11Every pitch has a purpose. He is throwing great pitches at the knees on the inside and outside corners.
- 2:41:19Even the pitch that Huff had to hit on, he just squirted it through. That was a good pitch.
- 2:41:29Time. Cole's calls time and Winans jumped from behind the plate as Howe was about to go on his wind.
- 2:41:40Howe really works over the gun when he's on the mound. He does not chew tobacco.
- 2:41:43He chews bubble gum and really chews it when he's out there on the mound.
- 2:41:49Said to the belt, the O1 swung on, popped up right side, not only giving it a look, but that'll make the seats out of play.
- 2:41:56Owen too. So how quickly ahead.
- 2:42:01This has been a dream season for how he's done everything the Yankees could have asked.
- 2:42:05He shut everyone's mouth about the Yankees going out and getting a closer.
- 2:42:09But he is one of the staunchest union supporters and he's ready to march midnight tonight or at the end of the latest game.
- 2:42:19The game on the West Coast.
- 2:42:23Here's the O2 swung on and driven to center field.
- 2:42:26Bernie Williams has room, moves toward right center, makes the catch and Carter heads back to second to away.
- 2:42:37How to bring up the dangers. Ed Sprague had a two run triple off the center field wall in the second inning, struck out in the fifth,
- 2:42:44blind to left in the sixth and grounded to second in the eighth.
- 2:42:48He's hitting two thirty eight with ten home runs and forty three runs batted in.
- 2:42:52We're in the top of the 10th inning here at Yankee Stadium in New York City and the Blue Jays and the Yankees are tied at six.
- 2:42:59Blue Jays have runners on first and second in two outs.
- 2:43:05Sprague a right handed batter, the number eight batter in the lineup, the pitch to Sprague.
- 2:43:10There's a strike on the outside corner. Oh and one and how is dealing.
- 2:43:22Big strong kid. Deep in the box, far away from the plate.
- 2:43:29How gets the sign from Larris, the one swung on right back to how he grabs the line drive, flips it up in the air and that'll do it.
- 2:43:38Oh, a little bit of luck and how's got a big red on his face for the Blue Jays.
- 2:43:44No runs, two hits, no errors and two left at the end of nine and a half. Toronto six, the Yankees six.
- 2:43:53The play by how to end the inning. Well, that is today's English leather catch of the day. Get into leather.
- 2:43:59English leather cologne and aftershave for men available at CBS. That was a great by what reaction.
- 2:44:04I don't know how much of it was locker, how much of it was skill, but it was made a line drive back to the mound.
- 2:44:09Well, one thing of a line drive is hit back at you, Mike. You got to move your glove because you know that's not going to get hurt.
- 2:44:16And I told Mike this off the air. How caught it? I mean, let's face it.
- 2:44:24Look, many flipped all over his head. He lands near the mound and he's walking off and Sprague is there probably cursing a blue street.
- 2:44:33And how gave Sprague an ear to ear grin and Sprague probably grin back and probably told him something naughty.
- 2:44:42Here's Danny Tartable. The first pitch from Woody Williams is a strike on the outside corner.
- 2:44:47So they relieved Danny Cox and Cox did a very, very good job for the Jays.
- 2:44:51He bids three innings of scoreless ball. In fact, I think scoreless hit this ball. I'll check that.
- 2:44:57The O one swan and a miss slider down and away.
- 2:45:01One two Tartable is one for four, the one a three run home run in the third inning. And what a shot it was into the lower deck in left field.
- 2:45:13Leo to just missed outside with the fastball one and two.
- 2:45:17Let's face it, Sprague very unlucky in a line drive that ticketed to go through the middle for a base that would have brought in the go ahead run.
- 2:45:24Sprague practically standing on the line at third and deep the one to strike three fastball outside corner.
- 2:45:31Tartable down looking did not like the call and he's having a couple of words with Matt Winans.
- 2:45:38Now we've said this over and over, John. Danny stands too far from the plate. He can't reach the outside pitch.
- 2:45:44They couldn't reset. That was way.
- 2:45:50I've seen worse. That's why he got so upset.
- 2:45:55So there's one away and here's Mattingly. Danny Cox allowed two men again on base, one an error by Sadaneo and one a hit fastball.
- 2:46:05Here's Mattingly. He's one for four. The crowd on its feet. The picks the Mattingly.
- 2:46:11Little bit outside. One and all. Tartable is still barking in the dugout. Well, they're on their feet giving Mattingly a great ovation because of what they heard last night on this broadcast and what they read in the radio.
- 2:46:25Read it. They read in the newspapers today that if the strike is prolonged, the one. Oh, swung on and fell back one and one.
- 2:46:33If the strike is prolonged and goes late into next year, I don't think it's going to happen for a minute that it could be his last game.
- 2:46:45So I think that's why they're giving him this great ovation. And they'd like to see a run on the bottom of the 10th inning. One out, nobody on the game tied at six.
- 2:46:55The Yankees, the one one swung on and driven to center field, not deep, right there.
- 2:47:03The glove that makes the catch for the second out of the inning.
- 2:47:07That'll bring up Larris. Larris came on in the fifth inning when Stanley had to leave the game.
- 2:47:16Now, Tip crushed his right hand. They took x-rays, all negative. So that's good news. First time up, Larris walked and scored and then he grounded the third and the eighth.
- 2:47:25Hitting 266. He does have 17 home runs. Some power. He could hand it right here and 58 runs batted in.
- 2:47:36Williams getting the sign from Borders, the pitch. Strike on the outside corner. Oh, and one.
- 2:47:44Williams one and three, three point seven seven. This is his 38th game.
- 2:47:49Fifty seven in the third innings pitch, the one strike two on the outside corner. Oh, and two. So Matt Wynand's plate is very wide and Larris takes a walk.
- 2:47:58He's shaking his head in the 57 in the third innings pitch. 44 hits, 24 runs. He's allowed five home runs, walk 33. That's a lot.
- 2:48:08Struck out 52 opponents hitting 211 off Woody Williams. The 0-2 to Larris just missed outside one and two.
- 2:48:20On deck, Bernie Williams, six nine and one for the J, six seven and one for the Yankees. The one two. Low and away, two and two.
- 2:48:40Williams takes a walk on the backside of the mound, now climbs back up. He's on the rubber, getting the sign.
- 2:48:46He's working from a full windup and he deals the two two way outside with the fastball outside and high three and two.
- 2:49:04Again, Sprague practically on the line. The three two is swung on and fouled off right near the on deck circle of the Blue Jays.
- 2:49:17Jays had a two nothing lead after two. The Yankees had four runs in the third.
- 2:49:21Then the J's took a five four lead after five and a half. The Yankees had a two in the bottom of the sixth.
- 2:49:27And they took a six five lead and then the J's scored a run in the eighth inning. Sloppy defense by the Yankees and it's six six. The three two.
- 2:49:34Swung on and missed and that'll do it. We go to the eleventh inning.
- 2:49:38No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left it at the end of ten full innings of play. Blue J six and the Yankees six.
- 2:49:50They wipe all the numbers off the scoreboard. It's like a little etch a sketch because they only have room for ten innings.
- 2:49:57We go to the 11th and the Yankees and the Blue Jays are tied at six.
- 2:50:01And if this is the way the season is going to end, it's certainly going to end in style.
- 2:50:05Steve House still on the mound, six nine and one for the Blue J six, seven and one for the New York Yankees for the Blue Jays.
- 2:50:12It'll be nine one and two. Borders, Schofield and Cedeno against Abbott. Abbott against Howe.
- 2:50:20And as I mentioned, we go to the 11th. That means we turn our lonely eyes to John Bradford Sterling.
- 2:50:26John who has weary eyes himself. That boarders will lead it off.
- 2:50:32He's the ninth at the top of the order for the Blue Jays. Schofield and Domingo Cedeno.
- 2:50:39Borders is over four. He has struck out twice. He hasn't had the ball out of the infield.
- 2:50:44He has some power. Right hand hitter. Howe in his second inning deals and the pitch is grounded foul outside of first.
- 2:50:52There is an example of a right hand hitter swinging late and he didn't miss a ground ball over the bag at first, which would have been a double down the line.
- 2:51:03So we go on and on here in the 11th. If there isn't a strike and boy, we all hope it's averted.
- 2:51:12Here's the O one pass ball inside. This is the end of the closers for a day or so.
- 2:51:19Wickman pitched two and two thirds innings. Howe is in his second inning. But I think everyone would trade that.
- 2:51:28For baseball to resume without a stoppage, the one one is lined to center field. Bernie Williams glides over, makes the catch and there's one away.
- 2:51:40I wonder if Kamenicki will be able to go because he got up and threw in earnest twice and he's due to be the starter of mine.
- 2:51:47I don't like the hoodie be able to start, but if the game goes very long, you might see Kamenicki or earnest.
- 2:51:54Ernie good one away and here is Dick Scofield.
- 2:52:02Who is one for three and has walked twice right hand hitter.
- 2:52:13The pitch is inside one and a line or I'll be tomorrow night.
- 2:52:18If there is a strike where at Mickey Mantles at seven, why you have dinner plans.
- 2:52:25Or maybe later, the one oh, come on and fall off.
- 2:52:34That's right. Our talk show sterling and came from Mickey Mantles seven to ten on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night.
- 2:52:42Busy phones, lots to do.
- 2:52:48It'll be a one one.
- 2:52:51Bet you by the count two and one.
- 2:52:55We'll try to get everything in. Yes, baseball, the strike.
- 2:53:00Football, dream team, Elvis.
- 2:53:06You can come in the two one is hit in the air to right field. Don't he'll comes in.
- 2:53:12And there are two way. Maybe his his daughter and son-in-law will show up.
- 2:53:17That would be neat.
- 2:53:19We'll put any kind of guest on and basement.
- 2:53:22Get their view on the strike. I really meant the backup quarterback of the 49ers.
- 2:53:26Elvis go back. Oh, that's so.
- 2:53:31I'm boning up on my football, John. I'm ready. OK.
- 2:53:35Well, maybe we can get on the same night Elvis go back and the former Sacramento king and Villanova wildcat Harold Presley.
- 2:53:43Very good. The pitch is bounce slowly up third.
- 2:53:47Boggs feels fires and gets the Danio.
- 2:53:51So how has a one, two, three at the end of ten and a half.
- 2:53:56Toronto six, the Yankee six. Do you have a car for sale?

- 2:55:38This is New York Yankees baseball.
- 2:55:41Stay tuned following Yankee baseball. It's the Bob Grant Show right here on...
- 2:55:47W-A-B-S-P-E-N-Y-O-R-K
- 2:55:55Bernie Williams, Mike Gallego, and Pat Kelley against Woody Williams as they play wild thing on the scoreboard.
- 2:56:02You make my heart sing.
- 2:56:06You make...
- 2:56:07No, let's not do it.
- 2:56:09That's tomorrow night we'll do that.
- 2:56:11Yes. Freeform.
- 2:56:13Bernie Williams and Acapella. Bernie Williams will lead it off.
- 2:56:17Sprague in at third, and the pitch is cut out a miss.
- 2:56:20Holy's third baseman come in for Bernie, who I don't think has ever bunned it.
- 2:56:26He is 1-4-4 today.
- 2:56:296-9-1 for Toronto, 6-7-1 for the Yanks.
- 2:56:34You know, you see all these advanced scouts at the game every day.
- 2:56:37Well, I'll tell you what I said to a whole bunch of them.
- 2:56:39They all won. Strike. Don Welke, an old group of them were at the table, Herb Stein and all.
- 2:56:48And I said, I hope I see what the game tomorrow night's got.
- 2:56:53I'm just wondering what scout came up with the idea.
- 2:56:56Oh yeah, we got to play Bernie again because he bunts. Who saw it?
- 2:57:00I don't know though. Line foul down the third base line of the seats.
- 2:57:05Well, you're right about that. I think it's ritualistic.
- 2:57:10Guy comes up with a little speed and you play the guy in at third.
- 2:57:13But Bernie, to my knowledge, has never bunned a third. I don't think he's ever bunned it anyway.
- 2:57:18Now look how far back they play him with two strikes.
- 2:57:20So that's where they think they should play him if he's not bunning.
- 2:57:23And how much room are they giving him when they think he's going to bun?
- 2:57:26The 0-2. High fastball from Woody Williams on the count 1-2.
- 2:57:31Henkin, Danny Cox, now Woody Williams, a right-hander.
- 2:57:37It'll be Bernie Williams and Mike Gallego, Pat Kelly, the bottom third of the Yankee batting order.
- 2:57:45Williams, the 1-2. A little pop fly to the left field.
- 2:57:50In his tracks, Coles makes the catch and there is one away.
- 2:57:54Here's Gallego, who was hit by a pitch his last time.
- 2:57:57But you can see that his left elbow is heavily wrapped now.
- 2:58:05Yankees have used only one man off their bench.
- 2:58:09And that was Larritz when Stanley hurt his hand in the fifth inning.
- 2:58:16I wonder why they don't go for Darrell Ball.
- 2:58:19Gag swings amazes.
- 2:58:24You've got Boston, you've got Nokes.
- 2:58:26You don't want to use Nokes though because he's your last catcher.
- 2:58:34That'll be an 0-1. Cut out of us.
- 2:58:36Take one more thing, Mike. No one's warming in the Yankees bullpen, so how will pitch a third inning?
- 2:58:41I don't think he's pitched three innings in one stint this year.
- 2:58:44I think he has.
- 2:58:46I'll have to check. I think he might have early.
- 2:58:50Okay. Now, Ed, if you tell me so, I'll buy it.
- 2:58:54I ain't buying it for a while.
- 2:58:56The 0-2, up high 1-2.
- 2:59:12Williams to the line. The pitch is up high.
- 2:59:15Well, you're going to have to buy. You ready to buy?
- 2:59:17Yes.
- 2:59:217-28 against Boston. He remained in the suspended game.
- 2:59:25And he totaled three in a third inning pitch.
- 2:59:28The 2-2.
- 2:59:30Jack, three outside corner.
- 2:59:32Guy Ager didn't like the call.
- 2:59:35And he mentions it to Matt Winans on the way by.
- 2:59:38So there are two down here. It's Matt Kelly.
- 2:59:40Well, it's on the air. It's official.
- 2:59:4350,000 Clear Channel watch plus the Yankee Radio Network.
- 2:59:47And I guess I will buy you a Snapple at Mickey Mantle's tomorrow night.
- 3:00:01The pitch is looped by Kelly DeForest.
- 3:00:03Ole Roode cannot make the catch, just a strike.
- 3:00:09And of course, a mystic.
- 3:00:11And of course, a mystic.
- 3:00:20And after the show, but after the show, maybe one Coors.
- 3:00:30It'd be an 0-1 to Kelly.
- 3:00:32The pitch is low. We'll see if I have the holes.
- 3:00:37They started the game in Detroit.
- 3:00:39The Tigers lead it 2-0 there in the third against Milwaukee.
- 3:00:44I knew they'd keep them there forever today.
- 3:00:48But the rain stopped and it wasn't forever.
- 3:00:50Pitch cut on and missed.
- 3:00:52He threw it by him in the count one and two.
- 3:00:54Williams is ahead of every hitter.
- 3:01:00In the 12th, Toronto has their hitters up that they want to break the tie.
- 3:01:04Three of the best in the league, Molitor, Carter, and Ole Roode.
- 3:01:08Here's the one-two.
- 3:01:10Breaking ball outside, 2-2.
- 3:01:11I'll tell you this for Yankee hitters.
- 3:01:14Yankee right-hand hitters, the pitch looks outside swinging it.
- 3:01:21Good advice.
- 3:01:22Mr. Wyman has been calling that a strike about an inch off the corner or so.
- 3:01:28Here is the 2-2.
- 3:01:30He struck him out swinging and the Yankees are down 1-2-3.
- 3:01:33They played 11 innings at Yankee Stadium.
- 3:01:36Toronto 6 in the Yankee 6.
- 3:01:43We go to the 12th.
- 3:01:46And Steve Howe is out for his third inning of relief.
- 3:01:52And he faces the top three hitters for the Blue Jays.
- 3:01:54Paul Molitor, Joe Carter, the first two right-handed hitters,
- 3:01:58and then lefty hitter, John Ole Roode.
- 3:02:006-9-1 for Toronto, 6-7-1 for the Yanks, and on we go.
- 3:02:04And with the play-by-play, here's Michael Cain.
- 3:02:07Thank you, John.
- 3:02:08Molitor is 1-4-5, so not a great Paul Molitor day, hitting 3-42, 14 home runs,
- 3:02:1675 runs batted in, has only hit a single in the sixth.
- 3:02:23And he did come around to score.
- 3:02:26Boggs even with the bag at third.
- 3:02:27The Yankees do not shift as drastically late in games to try to cut off the extra base hit.
- 3:02:33Buck Showalter doesn't believe in it.
- 3:02:34He thinks the majority of the base hits would go the other way.
- 3:02:38The pitch to Molitor is a strike on the outside corner of fastball, 0-1.
- 3:02:436-9-1 for the Jays, 6-7-1 for the Yankees.
- 3:02:47Oh, that's the scoreboard here.
- 3:02:54And here's the 0-1.
- 3:02:55Swung on, line drive to left field, coming on Polonia.
- 3:02:58He makes the play for the first out of the inning.
- 3:03:01Molitor could not have hit the ball any harder, but he hit it right at Polonia.
- 3:03:07And now, for the scoreboard elsewhere, the members only, right?
- 3:03:14That members only that you hear so much about.
- 3:03:18It was a 1-15 schedule start.
- 3:03:20Rain held up Milwaukee, Detroit.
- 3:03:22They have just begun at the end of two.
- 3:03:24Detroit leads Milwaukee 2-0.
- 3:03:26Bill Wegman and Mike Moore tonight.
- 3:03:27Boston and Baltimore, Aaron Sealy and Arthur Rhodes, Seattle and Oakland,
- 3:03:31Randy Johnson and Ron Darling.
- 3:03:34Here's Joe Carter. He's 1-for-5 today.
- 3:03:37The pitch to Carter is swung on, hit deep to left field.
- 3:03:39If it fair, it's gone. It is...
- 3:03:42gone! A home run for Joe Carter and the Blue Jays lead 7-6.
- 3:03:48That might have hit off the foul, Paul.
- 3:03:50Whatever it hit, it's a home run.
- 3:03:52Number 27 for Carter and the Jays take a one-run lead.
- 3:04:07Well, when he swung and hit it, like the Charterville home run, there's no doubt about it.
- 3:04:11That ball was out if it was fair.
- 3:04:14It's something and then went back on the field.
- 3:04:17And a home run for Carter. Harrell threw a fastball.
- 3:04:22Actually, I think it was a breaking ball.
- 3:04:24Maybe it was a slider and it hung over the plate.
- 3:04:26And it did look like it hit the pole.
- 3:04:29The pitch to O'Rourke is a strike on the outside corner.
- 3:04:31Hit the screen right down the line.
- 3:04:38And then kicked back out onto the field.
- 3:04:40The 0-1 swung on. Line drive to center field.
- 3:04:43Base hit for O'Rourke.
- 3:04:45And the Jays have a runner on with one out.
- 3:04:47Mike Huff coming to the play.
- 3:04:52In the National League today, Los Angeles shut out Cincinnati 2-0.
- 3:04:562-5 and 0 to 0-7 and 0. Ramon Martinez wanted his 12-7.
- 3:05:02Jose Rio lost his 9-6. Tim Walcott is 23rd.
- 3:05:05And they drew 33,876 at riverfront.
- 3:05:09Billy Conner is going out to talk with Howe.
- 3:05:12In Houston this afternoon, Astros just scored 3 in the bottom of the 7.
- 3:05:20It is 8-6 San Diego at the end of 7-1 half.
- 3:05:25Derrick Bell is homing for the Pondres.
- 3:05:27Kevin Bass for the Astros.
- 3:05:32John Hudak is pitching now for Houston.
- 3:05:35Scott Santis pitching for San Diego.
- 3:05:38The other games are tonight.
- 3:05:39Atlanta and Colorado will begin in about 20 minutes.
- 3:05:425-0-5 start.
- 3:05:44Greg Maddox and Lance Pater.
- 3:05:46New York's in Philadelphia tonight.
- 3:05:48Jason Huckamy will pitch against Fernando Valenzuela.
- 3:05:52Montreal plays in Pittsburgh tonight.
- 3:05:54It will be Butch Henry against Zane Smith.
- 3:05:58St. Louis at Florida.
- 3:06:00Bob Chicksbury and Pat Rapid.
- 3:06:02Here's Mike Huff.
- 3:06:03The pitch to Huff is a fastball low and inside 1-0.
- 3:06:07Huff has had a pretty good day.
- 3:06:09He's 2-4-4 RBI run scored on a walk.
- 3:06:12Jays lead the Yankees 7-6.
- 3:06:15Yankees are in a little bit of a slide right now.
- 3:06:17The pitch to Huff.
- 3:06:19Swung on and driven to center field.
- 3:06:21Bernie Williams has room.
- 3:06:22O'Rourke playing it halfway.
- 3:06:24Williams makes the catch and O'Rourke goes back to first.
- 3:06:27Two away.
- 3:06:30After a great road trip.
- 3:06:325-2 on the road trip.
- 3:06:34A great start after the all-star break.
- 3:06:39The Yankees lost 2 of 3 to the Orioles.
- 3:06:43They lost the final 2 in Minnesota.
- 3:06:45So that was 4 out of 5.
- 3:06:47And now they're trailing here in the 12th inning.
- 3:06:50It could be 5 out of 6.
- 3:06:52Here's Darnell Coles.
- 3:06:54He's 1-4-4.
- 3:06:55Two RBI's.
- 3:06:56A sack fly and a double.
- 3:07:01Now over to first and O'Rourke back.
- 3:07:10Coles hitting 2-11.
- 3:07:124 home runs, 14 RBI's.
- 3:07:14The pitch to Coles.
- 3:07:15Swung on and driven deep to center field.
- 3:07:17Bernie Williams going back.
- 3:07:18Has room.
- 3:07:19Makes the play for the final out of the inning.
- 3:07:21But not before.
- 3:07:22The Blue Jays score on on Joe Carter's solo home run.
- 3:07:26On two hits.
- 3:07:27No errors and one left at the end.
- 3:07:29With 11 and a half innings of play.
- 3:07:31Toronto 7, the Yankees 6.
- 3:07:33So you're shopping for a car.
- 3:07:35And it's got to be stylish.
- 3:07:36And it has to have the right features.
- 3:07:38And of course it has to be affordable.
- 3:07:41Well you'd be smart to take a closer look at the Nissan Sentra XE.
- 3:07:45After all, the Sentra XE features a powerful 16 valve engine.
- 3:07:50Precise fit and finish.
- 3:07:52And a host of available amenities like a driver's side airbag,

- 3:07:58and a four speaker cassette stereo system.
- 3:08:01All at a price that's $1,700 less than a Toyota Corolla DX.
- 3:08:08And what does $1,700 sound like?
- 3:08:14Well it sounds like a pretty nice tropical vacation to me.
- 3:08:17The Nissan Sentra XE.
- 3:08:19It's time to expect more from a car.
- 3:08:22For a limited time, special lease offers are available on the Sentra XE.
- 3:08:26Here's your Nissan dealer for details.
- 3:08:28Comparison based on NSRP for 94 Sentra XE and Corolla DX.
- 3:08:35Hey Yankees fans, take it from Dave Lennox.
- 3:08:37If there's one thing we've got this year, it's plenty of relief staff.
- 3:08:41So don't wait for your old air conditioner to wear down in the late innings.
- 3:08:44Replace it with a high efficiency Lennox air conditioner.
- 3:08:48Independently owned and operated, Lennox dealers meet the toughest quality standards in the industry.
- 3:08:53And in northern and central New Jersey,
- 3:08:55your ace reliever is Fritz & Sons.
- 3:08:57So get big time savings all season long.
- 3:08:59Call the pros at Fritz & Sons today.
- 3:09:05Well the Jays bring on that closer.
- 3:09:07That would be Darren Hall, a right hander, 1-3, 3.34.
- 3:09:11This is his 30th game. He has 17 saves, 29 and 2 third innings pitched.
- 3:09:1624 hits, 11 earned runs. He's allowed 3 home runs.
- 3:09:19Walked 13, struck out 27.
- 3:09:22Opponents are hitting 222 off Darren Hall.
- 3:09:26Now once Dwayne Ward was gone for the year, well they had to find a closure and they settled on Darren Hall.
- 3:09:33It'll be the top of the Yankee order trying to make up that one run deficit.
- 3:09:37The Jays lead 7-6.
- 3:09:39The strike deadline's tomorrow, August 12th.
- 3:09:41This is the bottom of the 12th.
- 3:09:43And let's hope on both, it's not the 12th of never.
- 3:09:48You know that home run by Carter hit right in the middle, smack dab on the pole.
- 3:09:53Just seen a couple of replays of it.
- 3:09:58It was gone when he hit it.
- 3:10:04If it was fair and the ball smacked off the pole, no question about that.
- 3:10:08Well the Yankees have their lefty hitters.
- 3:10:10We have never seen Darren Hall before.
- 3:10:12Toronto brought him up after the last time the Yankees played.
- 3:10:15Toronto, he has kind of a three-quarter almost sidearm delivery.
- 3:10:21And I would think he'd be very tough on right-hand hitters.
- 3:10:25So the Yankees have three lefty hitters and four of the first five hitters are lefty here in the 12th.
- 3:10:31Sprague in on the grass for Polonia.
- 3:10:34The pitch to Polonia is way outside 1-0.
- 3:10:40And he's playing very strange in on the grass.
- 3:10:42He's in on the grass and very close to the line.
- 3:10:45He'll chop the ball right by him.
- 3:10:47Here's the 1-0.
- 3:10:49Fastball right down the middle of the plate, 1-1.
- 3:10:51The Blue Jays, 7-11 and 1.
- 3:10:53The Yankees, 6-7 and 1.
- 3:10:55Louis hits a lot of ground balls between third and short, so they have the shortstop over 2, kind of backing up Sprague.
- 3:11:01The middle's open.
- 3:11:02The 1-1.
- 3:11:03Swung on line, drive into the right field corner.
- 3:11:05That's going to be a base hit and go all the way to the wall.
- 3:11:08Polonia around first.
- 3:11:09He's heading to second.
- 3:11:10Carter Field fires and Polonia's in with a leadoff double.
- 3:11:14They're standing on second base, clapping.
- 3:11:17A clutch base hit for Louis Polonia to lead off the 12th.
- 3:11:22Now we mentioned how many bases.
- 3:11:28Clutch bases O'Neill has had this year in Boggs.
- 3:11:30Louis has had a lot of clutch hits.
- 3:11:32The ball was down and then he opened up quickly and laced it right down the line.
- 3:11:38Proving to doubt if he can pull the ball.
- 3:11:40He can pull the ball.
- 3:11:42And you have one of your fastest, if not your fastest Yankee at second, no one out.
- 3:11:47There's no fun coming up.
- 3:11:49What you want to do is to have Boggs, O'Neill and Tartable.
- 3:11:54And if anyone else gets on mattingly, take three shots of getting a base hit.
- 3:11:58You know what? I like your odds.
- 3:11:59Take three shots.
- 3:12:00If he gets down, tip your hat to Darren Hall.
- 3:12:04Polonia with that double now has two doubles on the afternoon.
- 3:12:08He's two for six.
- 3:12:15Here's Boggs.
- 3:12:17The pitch to Boggs, a little bit low, one and O.
- 3:12:21On the day, Boggs is one for five with a double and a sack flying and RBI hitting 340.
- 3:12:27Eleven home runs and 55 runs batted in.
- 3:12:32As John mentioned, Paul O'Neill on deck.
- 3:12:37The one O.
- 3:12:39There's a strike on the outside portion of the play, one and one.
- 3:12:43The base hit by Polonia, the eighth for the Yankees.
- 3:12:47They get the left-hander Castillo up along with right-hander Mike Timlin,
- 3:12:51but you're going to use the left-hander.
- 3:12:53You ought to use them now.
- 3:12:55You would think, but they got him up late.
- 3:12:58The one one, way outside, two and one.
- 3:13:10Hall has become the closer out of necessity.
- 3:13:14Dwayne Ward, so many problems with his shoulder, could not start it up this year.
- 3:13:20The two one, in the dirt, scooped up beautifully by Borders.
- 3:13:24It's three and one.
- 3:13:25He kind of slings the ball.
- 3:13:26I would think he'd be tough on the right-handers.
- 3:13:28Mike, here's an interesting thing.
- 3:13:30The Blue Jays have Coles playing straightaway left, way off the line,
- 3:13:35and the center fielder, Hump, is playing maybe one step to the right field side of center,
- 3:13:41so they obviously feel Boggs will pull Hall.
- 3:13:47Here's the three one.
- 3:13:49Swan and chopped over the middle, moving over to Sedeno, but Schofield cuts in front.
- 3:13:54Boggs beats it out.
- 3:13:56Schofield cut in front of Sedeno, fielded the ball, flipped to O'Rourke,
- 3:14:00pulled him off the bag, and Polonia goes to third.
- 3:14:03Boggs is on first with an infield hit.
- 3:14:05Mike, I have no idea.
- 3:14:07It was the right play for Schofield, because if Sedeno feels it, he's going away,
- 3:14:12but Schofield threw terribly.
- 3:14:14Instead of firing it, he flipped it and threw kind of a medicine ball toss to O'Rourke.
- 3:14:21That's why Boggs beat it out.
- 3:14:23Boggs had it beaten, and I don't know why Schofield must have slipped out of his hand.
- 3:14:28The only thing I can figure, that it must have slipped out of his hands.
- 3:14:31He could have had Boggs, and he threw a pop fly to first base.
- 3:14:35So the tying run at third, which is almost a gimme at this point,
- 3:14:40the winning run is at first, and here is O'Neill, and you have O'Neill,
- 3:14:43Charterville, and Mattingly.
- 3:14:45O'Neill is 0-4-4 with a walk and a run score.
- 3:14:47The pitch to O'Neill, outside ball one.
- 3:14:52All you need is a fly ball, and you tie the game.
- 3:14:58Even a double play, they're playing for the double play.
- 3:15:00They will give up the tying run.
- 3:15:05The 1-0, swung on and fouled back off the glove of Borders, all the way back to the screen.
- 3:15:11They are playing back. I don't blame them.
- 3:15:13You don't want to lose the game.
- 3:15:15A ground ball anywhere but third, and O'Neill hardly is going to hit a ground ball
- 3:15:20at the third unless he swings very late against the run-in,
- 3:15:24and they'd love to turn the double play.
- 3:15:26The only two things can hurt the Yanks, a strikeout or a pop-up.
- 3:15:30The 1-1, swung on and chopped over the middle.
- 3:15:33Schofield right there. He'll get two.
- 3:15:35Steps on second, fires the first.
- 3:15:37Polonia scores, and the Yankees have tied the game at seven on the 6-6-3 double play.
- 3:15:43He chopped it right over the middle.
- 3:15:45Schofield moved to his left, fielded the ball, stepped on the bag himself,
- 3:15:48and fired a strike to All-Rood, and the Yankees tie the game.
- 3:15:52And Tartable.
- 3:15:56That's a second chopper just like that.
- 3:15:59His pitches must really sink.
- 3:16:01Here's Tartable.
- 3:16:03One for five.
- 3:16:05The pitch, it's high, 1-0.
- 3:16:07The one, a home run, a three-run shot in the third inning.
- 3:16:10The Yankees would like more of the same right here.
- 3:16:12Otherwise, we go to the 13th.
- 3:16:18The 1-0 from Hall.
- 3:16:20High 2-0 on deck.
- 3:16:22Donald Arthur Mattingly.
- 3:16:26Joe Osanio's in the Yankee bullpen.
- 3:16:28He'll be coming on on the 13th.
- 3:16:30Tartable with 19 home runs, 67 rebbies.
- 3:16:34The 2-0, swung on and missed.
- 3:16:36Breaking ball down and away.
- 3:16:437-11 and one for the Jays, 7-9 and one for the Yankees.
- 3:16:49The 2-1, swung on and chop foul outside of third.
- 3:16:53The count is even at 2-2.
- 3:16:56He must have some downward sink on the ball,
- 3:16:59because everyone's chopping the ball except for Polonia.
- 3:17:04Polonia got a fastball, knee-high, thigh-high,
- 3:17:08opened up and lined it down the right field line.
- 3:17:12The 2-2, way outside, backhanded by Borders.
- 3:17:16The count is full at 3-2.
- 3:17:18Two outs, nobody on.
- 3:17:20Bottom of the 12th inning, the Yankees and Jays are tied at 7.
- 3:17:29The 3-2, swung on and chopped the third base.
- 3:17:33Sprague right there, he fields and fires.
- 3:17:36And that'll do it here in the 12th inning, but the Yankees do tie the game.
- 3:17:40One run, two hits, no errors, nobody left at the end of 12 full innings of play.
- 3:17:45Toronto 7, the Yankees 7.

- 3:18:52Today's game is all about the Yankees beating the opposition.
- 3:18:55Sometimes they do it, and sometimes they don't.
- 3:18:57No guarantees.
- 3:18:58Nobody beats the Wiz loves baseball,
- 3:19:00but we have to play by different rules.
- 3:19:02We have to beat the competition every day, and we guarantee it.
- 3:19:06The Yankees scout, nobody beats the Wiz shots.
- 3:19:08The Yankees hit, and nobody beats the Wiz.
- 3:19:11You save on home electronics, music, movies, cameras, computers, and more.
- 3:19:15It does come down to the same thing for both of us, winning at all costs.
- 3:19:19Only it's a low cost, and nobody beats the Wiz.
- 3:19:22Well, we go to Lucky 13.
- 3:19:23I don't think either of these teams wants to go on strike.
- 3:19:267-11 and one for the Jays, 7-9 and one for the Yankees.
- 3:19:30Let's take 10 seconds for station identification.
- 3:19:33This is New York Yankees baseball.
- 3:19:35Lynn Samuels, tonight at 7, right here on Talk Radio 77.
- 3:19:41W-A-B-C, New York.
- 3:19:45Well, that'll do it for Steve, huh?
- 3:19:47They bring on the right-hander Joe Osanio, and he'll face 8-9-1 in the Blue J lineup.
- 3:19:53Sprague, Borders, and Schofield.
- 3:19:5713 innings of play here on a Thursday afternoon.
- 3:20:01A lot of the crowd is left, they say half.
- 3:20:0337,333 was the announced crowd.
- 3:20:09So Osanio will try to keep the Blue Jays on the line.
- 3:20:12And let the Yankees try to score a run in the bottom of the 13.
- 3:20:17Sprague will lead it off.
- 3:20:19Sprague, so far today, is 1-4-5 with a triple and two runs batted in.
- 3:20:25Almost won the game in the 10th inning.
- 3:20:28In retrospect, would have won the game when he lined one right back up the middle.
- 3:20:32But Howe made a great play, just a stab of the line drive to end the inning.
- 3:20:36So Sprague, who's 1-4-5, hitting 238, and he's going to be the first to score.
- 3:20:411-4-5, hitting 238, 10 home runs and 43 rebbies.
- 3:20:45He's ready, Osanio's ready, and John Sterling, as always, is ready with the play-by-play.
- 3:20:51And the first pitch of fastball high, 1-0.
- 3:20:55Well, if it's the last game, we are getting our money's worth, eh?
- 3:21:00Yes, eh.
- 3:21:03Well, Toronto's here, you have to say that.
- 3:21:05It'll be a 1-0 to Sprague, and the pitch inside, 2-0.
- 3:21:09Melito Perez went 6 1 3rd, Bob Wickman 2 2 3rd, Howe 3.
- 3:21:14Now, Osanio, who has emerged from absolutely nowhere.
- 3:21:19Well, Columbus, but the Yanks didn't know about him.
- 3:21:23The 2-0 is corked at deep left field.
- 3:21:25Back goes Pallogna to the track, to the wall, it's gone.
- 3:21:29Ed Sprague, homers in the left field seats, and Toronto takes an 8-7 lead here in the top of the 13th.
- 3:21:37Now, Mike just told you that Sprague could have won the game when he hit that line dry,
- 3:21:42that Howe just flicked up the glove and happened to stick in.
- 3:21:45That would have brought in a run, while Sprague took it in his own hands this time.
- 3:21:49Hey, Homer, deep to left, a mighty shot, his 11th home run.
- 3:21:53And what is his 44th RBI?
- 3:21:57Remember, he had a two-run triple early in the game that just missed going out in center field,
- 3:22:01so Sprague's had a big day.
- 3:22:03He hung the splitter, which is hung up right in front of Sprague's eyes as he drilled it.
- 3:22:09The pitch to borders is outside 1-0.
- 3:22:12Toronto takes the lead, 8-7.
- 3:22:21Borders the right-hand heading catcher, the 1-0 is up high on the count, 2-0.
- 3:22:26The Aggies will have Mattingly, Larritz, and Bernie Williams as their top three hitters,
- 3:22:31and they have two lefty hitters on the bench in Nokes and Boston.
- 3:22:35Pitch is popped up to shallow left.
- 3:22:38Polonia comes in.
- 3:22:40Louis will make the catch, and there is one away.
- 3:22:47Shortstop, Dick Cofield.
- 3:22:50What a weird game it is in many respects, but it's a great game.
- 3:22:54It is, in many respects, it's very weird.
- 3:22:57And you can look back at this game if your either team has said,
- 3:23:00gee, we should have done this, or shouldn't have done this.
- 3:23:03The Yankees made a couple of big goofs in the field today, something they normally do not do.
- 3:23:08However, Dick Cofield, the right-hand hitter, is in with one out,
- 3:23:14knowing on, Orsaniot deals, and Cofield runs up and takes a strike on the count, 0-1.
- 3:23:29Toronto leads 8-7 here on the top of the 13th. Orsaniot will try to hold it at 8.
- 3:23:35He deals low and goes back to the screen, the count, 1-1.
- 3:23:41Carter a base is empty home run. Sprague a base is empty home run here in extra innings.
- 3:23:47Sprague had a two-run triple earlier in the game.
- 3:23:50Danny Charneval a three-run home run for the Yanks.
- 3:23:53The 1-1. There's a strike on a breaking ball on the count, 1-2.
- 3:23:57Now the stretch by Orsaniot, the 1-2. He struck him out swinging breaking ball.
- 3:24:18So there are two way a Cofield strikes out.
- 3:24:20The second baseman Domingo Cedeno. And here's Domingo Cedeno, the switch hitting second baseman,
- 3:24:28who went in after Alomar came out of the game midway through.
- 3:24:32Cedeno has walked twice and bounced a third.
- 3:24:42There is a strike on the outside corner. At the beginning of the year,
- 3:24:45Toronto's sure stop was to have been Alex Gonzalez. He didn't hit.
- 3:24:50He's back in the model leagues along with their other hot shots in the minors, Delgado and Green.
- 3:24:56Cedeno takes the strike.
- 3:24:58Cofield became the number one sure stop and Cedeno the backup for both.
- 3:25:02I think in retrospect it shows that the Blue Jays put too much emphasis on rookies.
- 3:25:06You can't infiltrate three rookies or two rookies into a starting lineup of a World Championship team
- 3:25:11and expect not to miss a beat. They missed the beat.
- 3:25:14Well also too, it's very tough to gauge when a guy's ready or not to pitch.
- 3:25:18He struck him out swinging.
- 3:25:20Cedeno.
- 3:25:22But Osanio gave up one run on the home run to Sprague. One hit.
- 3:25:26We go to the bottom of the 13th. And Toronto has an 8-7 lead.
- 3:25:30He's last chance, Mattingly, Larritz and Bernie Williams against Darren Hall.
- 3:25:35So they give Hall another shot. This time he won't go for save, he'll go for the win.
- 3:25:40You like lefties against Hall the way he pitches and Matt Nokes has come on deck for Larritz.
- 3:25:47So it'll be three lefty hitters initially against Hall.
- 3:25:53Try to close it out. Mattingly, Nokes and then Bernie Williams.
- 3:25:59And you still have a lefty hitter left for either Gallego or Kelly, Darryl Boston.
- 3:26:13Being on deck though is not in the game. So let's say Mattingly,
- 3:26:23Homers for example, you don't have to send up Nokes. No one's warming in the Toronto bullpen.
- 3:26:30The pitch is fastball low 1-0.
- 3:26:36Hall comes somewhere between three quarters inside.
- 3:26:39I'm kind of slings the ball. It'll be a 1-0 to Mattingly.
- 3:26:45Low 2-0. It looks like it's tough on his arm. Wouldn't you think that?
- 3:26:48You would think the way he comes almost buggy with.
- 3:26:52How badly do you think Mattingly wants to jack one out of here right now?
- 3:26:55Badly. He is one for five on the day. Yankees trail bottom of the 13th, 8-7.
- 3:27:01The right-handed Darren Hall deals 2-0.
- 3:27:05Low 3-0. I think the Yankees probably made a mistake at swinging some of his pitches.
- 3:27:10Had to be at first and third, knowing how.
- 3:27:12He does throw everything sinking low. He throws what they would call a heavy ball.
- 3:27:17The 3-0. There is a strike on the knees on the count of three and one.
- 3:27:22Now they've pulled Nokes off deck and put Darrell Boston there, which I don't understand.
- 3:27:28Because you are pinch-hitting for the catcher. Why are you burning an extra player?
- 3:27:33You're absolutely right.
- 3:27:38It'll be a 3-1 to Mattingly, way outside.
- 3:27:43A lot of Hall's pitches go, in effect, down in a way, kind of Scrooge-like from the arm movement, the arm delivery.
- 3:27:52You know, you have a very good point. But I guess Buccus wants to put him up in this order for whatever reason.
- 3:27:58The reason I don't know.
- 3:28:02Because Nokes will be used to hit for either Gallego or Kelly.
- 3:28:06And of course, if you don't get that far in the game, the game is over, so it doesn't hurt you.
- 3:28:12He also knows that Boston's a pretty good off-speed breaking ball hitter, and that's exactly what Hall's been throwing.
- 3:28:19Well, the tying line is at first no one out, and once again, left-handed Castillo.
- 3:28:24The pitch to Boston, ground and foul. And right-handed Timlin, get up.
- 3:28:29This time they got up Rigetti, John.
- 3:28:33Which I don't understand. So it's Rigetti and Timlin.
- 3:28:38Oh, it's not Castillo. It's Riggs. It was Castillo before when they sat down.
- 3:28:43Oh, that is Riggs. Now they bring up Riggs. That's easy to see.
- 3:28:50That'll be an 0-1 to Boston. Mattingly, the tying runoff first pitch outside.
- 3:28:55And the count 1-1. One thing I know, you have to lay off the pitch.
- 3:29:01I mean, it's very tough to do. The sinking pitch, and most of his pitches are sinking low.
- 3:29:06First time the Yanks have ever seen Darren Hall.
- 3:29:10It'll be a 1-1. Fouled off.
- 3:29:14And the count 1-2. He reached for an outside pitch.
- 3:29:18Bernie Williams on deck.
- 3:29:25A game that has gone over four hours.
- 3:29:37Mattingly, the tying runoff. And of course, Boston at home late. The winning run.
- 3:29:43Here's the 1-2. That's low on the count 2-2.
- 3:29:49Hall really staying away from Boston. The center fielder, Mike Hup, is playing several steps.
- 3:29:55Maybe five, six steps toward left center field. Coles and left just straight away.
- 3:30:03It'll be a 2-2. Lays off the outside pitch just in the count 3-2.
- 3:30:11Well, Mattingly will not be going because that would be a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play.
- 3:30:16But now Hall has to throw a strike.
- 3:30:22So he's got to make the pitch a little more palatable for Darrell Boston.
- 3:30:30And now, Gerald Williams goes in to run for Mattingly. And you can bet your boots he will be off.
- 3:30:36And no question about it now.
- 3:30:42So Mattingly leaves. Gerald Williams goes in to run for him.
- 3:30:52And Buck Showalter is holding up a sign saying he is running 3-2.
- 3:30:58And no question about it. Why would you do that if you didn't do it before?
- 3:31:06So Gerald Williams gets the lead at first. It'll be a 3-2 to Boston.
- 3:31:10And a throw over and Gerald jumps on back.
- 3:31:22Darrell Boston ready to swing 3-2.
- 3:31:27If Hall misses, the Yankees will have the tying run at second and the winning run at first.
- 3:31:33And here's the 3-2. Runner goes. Pitch is ground to foul. What a jump Gerald Williams had.
- 3:31:38If Boston had struck out, Waters had no chance. He had a fabulous jump against Darin Hall.
- 3:31:45You know, conceivably, I'm just guessing, but I bet Gerald Williams has seen Hall before.
- 3:31:52Because they both were in the International League last year.
- 3:31:55Sure, Syracuse against Columbus. That's a good point.
- 3:32:03Gerald inches off. There he goes. The 3-2 hammered. Great stop by O'Rourke. He fumbles it. Goes to the bag.
- 3:32:09And touches up. Nice stop by O'Rourke. That would have been a base hit to right field. Boston hit it hard.
- 3:32:14You can see why Hall is effective. He gets a lot of ground balls.
- 3:32:19The pitch was over the outside corner.
- 3:32:23That was a great play, John. He moved so quickly to his right.
- 3:32:28Boston really scorched it. Kept it real close to the earth. But a great play moving to his right by O'Rourke.
- 3:32:34He stopped the ball, stayed with it, picked it up and stepped on the bag.
- 3:32:37And he saved the first and third situation. Indeed.
- 3:32:43Now there's a ball on the field, I think, escaped. So Joe Carter will go out right field and throw it away.
- 3:32:52Hall's pitches are almost like a right hand side armor who will deliver. Like Mark Eichorn, for example.
- 3:33:01Or the guy who used to be with the Mets.
- 3:33:04Terry Leach. They come up and sink down and away from the angle in which they are thrown.
- 3:33:12You almost have to go with that pitch with the Yankees having been doing the trying to pull that pitch.
- 3:33:16The pitch to Bernie is on the inside corner for a strike to keep Bernie honest.
- 3:33:23I guess they did that in the top of the inning. Didn't notice. It's starting to get a little overcast.
- 3:33:27It's been overcast all day, but a little darker.
- 3:33:33The tying run is at second with one out. The Yankees have two shots at it.
- 3:33:39There's the 0-1. It's inside. Another slider.
- 3:33:44Last two pitches have been sliders down and in to Bernie.
- 3:33:49Basically, Hall throws a sinking fastball.
- 3:33:53And as I mentioned, they almost, when he delivers the ball to the outside part of the play against the left-handed, they sink almost down and away.
- 3:34:04The 1-1. There's a strike. Another breaking ball on the count 1-2.
- 3:34:15Good breaking pitch. It might have been a little bit below the knees. That's why Bernie was arguing.
- 3:34:20That's where it was caught, but maybe it cascaded over the plate right around the knees.
- 3:34:24Yankees have one left-hand hitter next. Left, I should say.
- 3:34:29They might use him for Gallego. Let's see. It'll be a 1-2. Just missed outside on the count 2-2.
- 3:34:40But Hall has kind of advertised the slider down and in, so Bernie can't go reaching over the plate.
- 3:34:48Where Hall probably wants the pitch, I'm just guessing.
- 3:34:53The tying run. Gerald Williams leads off second. And the 2-2. He struck him out swinging. They're two-way.
- 3:35:00The Yanks are down to their final out. They'll use notes for Gallego.
- 3:35:12He changed speeds on that one. Third ball diving down at the last moment. It was kind of up in the zone, but it had enough of a drop to it that Bernie Williams swung over the top.
- 3:35:22Also the change of speed got him.
- 3:35:35Well, this is it, and here comes Galen Siscoe to probably talk to Hall about how to pitch to Notes.
- 3:35:44Notes has never seen Hall before, unless he might have seen him in a spring training game. I doubt it.
- 3:35:55And our sound system, we gave him the names, those were the days. Those were the days, my friend.
- 3:36:06We thought they'd never run. That's what I thought. I thought they might end October 3rd, and I was hoping maybe October 28th or so.
- 3:36:17Wouldn't that be your anniversary? 30th. 30th.
- 3:36:31You get your best Biven Tucker ready for that. You're going to have a blowout of that one. Really? Yep.
- 3:36:38Alright. The 28th and the 30th. Both. Hopefully the 28th will be the end of the series. 30th for sure.
- 3:36:47Here's Matt Notes, two outs. Gerald Williams at second, and the pitch is swung on and driven to deep right center field.
- 3:36:54That goes Huff. He's there in deep right center, makes the catch, and the ball game is over. And in 13 innings,
- 3:37:01Toronto has beaten the Yankees by the score of 8-7 on the home run by Ed Sprague in the top of the inning.
- 3:37:09Notes hit it very well, and Huff caught it on the very edge of the warning track in deep right center field.
- 3:37:19The game goes 4-0-6. It also goes 13 innings, and Toronto is the victor, 8-7.
- 3:37:26Well, they're going to go. They certainly went out with a pretty funky ball game. A lot of things went on in this one.
- 3:37:32Yankees put a little sloppy defense in the outfield, but for the most part, an entertaining ball game, 8-7.
- 3:37:39They kept it four more innings, and it should have gone, and if they go on strike, well, that's a pity. That's a shame.
- 3:37:45We hope it doesn't happen. We'll make the play. Don't do it. Don't do it. But I don't think anybody's listening to us.
- 3:37:52All the fans have been saying the same thing. And about 12 midnight tonight, we'll know for sure what the story is,
- 3:37:58and I think we all know what the story is. We hope the story changes.
- 3:38:01We hope the ending is a completely different ending than we've been expecting throughout the book.
- 3:38:05So this is just the ball game. Tonight is the season.
- 3:38:12Well said, Michael. Well, I know I'll see you tomorrow. I just don't know where.
- 3:38:17I'll see you either here at 645 for Yankee pregame before the second game of the four-game weekend series,
- 3:38:24or I'll see you at Mickey Mantles at 7.
- 3:38:28Well, as much as I like Mickey Mantles, I'd rather see you right here.
- 3:38:31Right. Well, we'll hope that, and if not, see you at Mickey's. Thank you, Michael.
- 3:38:39Here are the totals on the ball game.
- 3:38:47For the Blue Jays, as they win it in 13 innings, 8 runs, 12 hits, 1 error. They left 9. For the Yanks, 7 runs, 9 hits, 1 error.
- 3:38:57They left 8. Darren Hall wins it. He's 2 and 3. Joe Osanio loses. He's 2 and 1.
- 3:39:06They drew.
- 3:39:11They drew 37,333. The Yankees in their last 10 games averaged, I think it's almost on the nose, right around there.
- 3:39:2040,000 people a game in their last 10 games. So don't tell me business ain't good. Business is good, pal.
- 3:39:28With the loss, the Yankees dropped to 70 and 43, and the Blue Jays improved to 55 and 60.
- 3:39:36Yankee postgame is next if you have the chance. Stay tuned.
- 3:39:40The final in 13 innings today, Toronto 8, Yankee 7, and from Yankee Stadium in New York. This is New York Yankees baseball.

- 3:43:39We go to the highlights of the ballgame. The Yankees lost it in 13. The game went back and forth about 10 different times. 8-7 to Toronto. Blue Jays grabbed the early lead.
- 3:43:52The second inning with one out, O'Rourke singled and Huff walked. And with two outs, Ed Sprague came up and he drilled a terrific shot to deep center. Went off the very top of the center field wall, just to the right field side of the 408 foot sign. And went off the wall maybe an inch or two from the very top.
- 3:44:09And the Yankees came back for a triple for Sprague, the first of his big hits of the day. And Toronto had a 2-0 lead. But the Yankees took the lead in the third inning. Michael Kay was at the microphone when Gallego lined out and Pat Kelly kind of jump started the Yankee offense with a bunt single down the third baseline.
- 3:44:30Luis Bologna lined a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third. Wade Boggs at a sack fly to center field. Kelly crossed and it was a 2-1 game. And then Paul O'Neill drew a walk. So there were two on, two out, two on Toronto and Danny Tartable at the plate.
- 3:44:49And then Hanken sets, checks Bologna, the 2-1. Swung out and hit deep to left field. See ya. Home run and a Yankees lead 4-2. Oh what a shot by Danny Tartable.
- 3:45:04And Danny hit a three run home run. It was 4-2. However, the Blue Jays came back in the sixth inning against Milito Perez. Molitor's single and with one out, O'Rourke walked and then Mike Huff doubled in a run.
- 3:45:26He hit the runners at second and third and made it 4-3. And the next hitter was Darnell Coles. Here's Darnell Coles. And the pitch is a high fly to left center. That will tie the game.
- 3:45:42Bologna and deep left makes the catch. O'Rourke could walk home. The throw comes to our third. It's going to go in the Toronto dugout. No one was there and I think the run is going to be allowed home. It is. So Huff scores all the way from second as Bologna threw the ball to the Toronto dugout.
- 3:45:59He threw close at his 5-4 Toronto. Yeah and I went on if you heard the play by play I said he could have run the ball in, he could have walked the ball in, he could have rolled the ball in. He wound up trying to muscle the throw to third was way off line. There was no one there.
- 3:46:16He threw the ball practically directly into the Toronto dugout and Huff is allowed an extra base. He scored. And so Toronto took a 5-4 lead. But the Yankees regained the lead in the sixth inning. Charleville struck out and Mattingly flied out.
- 3:46:32But then Layretts walked. Bernie Williams singled and Gallego on a 3-2 pitch walk. Bases loaded two outs. It brought up Pat Kelly. The 1-2. Kerrball is lined. It's in the field. It is a base hit. Layretts scores.
- 3:46:46Bernie Williams scores a two run, two out single for Pat Kelly and the Yankees take a 6-5 lead. So the 6-5 lead lasted until the eighth and then remember Bologna's throwing error, a ridiculous throw into the dugout cost the Yanks a run.
- 3:47:04Well, Bernie Williams' bad defensive play in center field cost him a run in the eighth. John O'Rourke led off. He lined a pitch. Well, why don't you hear it? Here's what O'Rourke did in the eighth.
- 3:47:16The 1-1 is lined to center field. On the run is Bernie. Has to play it on a hop and it gets by him. It rolls all the way toward the warning track. O'Rourke around second. He'll go to third. Terrible sloppy play by the Yankees and O'Rourke has a three base hit.
- 3:47:35It could be a single and a two base error. Bernie put on the brakes, slipped and the ball went past him. So it should have been a single to center field has turned into three bases and there's the tying run.
- 3:47:47Yeah, it was going to score a triple. So after an out, Coles doubled down the left field line to tie the game and we went to the bottom of the eighth inning. The Yankees didn't score. Neither team scored in the ninth. In fact, neither team scored till the 12th.
- 3:48:05And with one out, Joe Carter hit one deep down the left field line, hit the foul pole for a home run and Toronto had a 7-6 lead. But in the bottom of the 12th, Luis Polonia led off with a double. Boggs had an infield single sending Louis to third and O'Neill chopped a ground ball up the middle, turned into a double play.
- 3:48:23And that tied the game at seven and we went to the 13th and now Joe Osanio is pitching and with Osanio on the mound, the leadoff hitter was Ed Sprague. We're calling this the quality play of the game. It's brought to you by the United Auto Workers, UAW and Ford, working together for quality.
- 3:48:40The 2-0 is corked at deep left field. Back goes Polonia to the track. To the wall it's gone. Ed Sprague, Homer's in the left field seats and Toronto takes an 8-7 lead here in the top of the 13th.
- 3:48:54In the bottom of the 13th, the Yankees did get a leadoff walk from Mattingly. However, Darryl Boston grounded out. Bernie Williams struck out. Matt Nokes flied out and the Yankees had lost the ballgame by the score of 8-7.
- 3:49:088-12 and 1 for Toronto, they left 9. 7-9 and 1 for the Yanks, they left 8. Darren Hall wins it, he's 2-3. Joe Osanio loses, he's 2-1. The Yankees fall to 70 and 43 with the loss. And Toronto improves to 55 and 60.
- 3:49:24And Ed Sprague with the 2-run triple and the home run is our Computer Associates star of the game. Computer Associates, makers of software superior by design.
