- 0:00Speaker 1: Yet a small number that escape the sword shall return
- 0:04Speaker 1: out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah,
- 0:07Speaker 1: and all the remnant of Judah that are gone into
- 0:10Speaker 1: the land of Egypt to sojourn there shall know whose
- 0:13Speaker 1: words shall stand, mine or theirs. Jeremiah 44.28 Dear God,
- 0:22Speaker 1: as you continue to elevate me to places of influence
- 0:26Speaker 1: and leadership, I ask that you give me a heart
- 0:30Speaker 1: and ears to hear and heed when a man or
- 0:34Speaker 1: woman of God has been sent into my life to
- 0:37Speaker 1: protect me from the attack of the enemy. Unlike those
- 0:42Speaker 1: in today's reading, I confess that my desire is to
- 0:46Speaker 1: be in the complete and unwavering plan of the Lord.
- 0:52Speaker 1: I confess that when I am given a word of
- 0:55Speaker 1: warning or correction, I will not allow pride and ego
- 1:00Speaker 1: to respond in me. I will not run in the
- 1:03Speaker 1: direction of what you freed me from in previous years. Instead,
- 1:09Speaker 1: I will plant my feet firmly on the words of
- 1:13Speaker 1: your prophets and watch my life flourish and grow because
- 1:18Speaker 1: I've learned to move and act at the sound of
- 1:21Speaker 1: your voice. I decree and declare. that I am no
- 1:27Speaker 1: longer a slave to my past, but a servant to
- 1:32Speaker 1: my future. In Jesus' name.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Thank you for making prayer a priority in your day.
- 1:44Speaker 1: To learn more about the Bible, stay tuned for today's story.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 2:03Speaker 3: In our last story, Jeremiah witnessed the downfall of Judah.
- 2:08Speaker 3: King Nebuchadnezzar used the Chaldean army to lay waste to
- 2:11Speaker 3: all of Jerusalem. Hundreds of thousands of people were taken captive,
- 2:16Speaker 3: and the remaining rulers of Judah were beheaded and trampled. Jeremiah, however,
- 2:21Speaker 3: was spared from the Babylonians. He was given a choice
- 2:25Speaker 3: to go to Babylon and live comfortably or remain with
- 2:28Speaker 3: his peoples. Now we see the remaining Judeans trying to
- 2:32Speaker 3: rebuild their city. However, even in the tragedy of loss
- 2:35Speaker 3: and tyranny, there still remains greedy people hungry for power.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Inspired by the book of Jeremiah.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Hello, I'm Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 2:48Speaker 2: in a Year podcast. But before we begin, I want
- 2:52Speaker 2: to let you know about a unique e-book that's yours
- 2:55Speaker 2: to download absolutely free today. It's called Breaking Free from Stress.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And my prayer is that it will help you conquer
- 3:03Speaker 2: the daily tasks and pressures and burdens that bring stress
- 3:06Speaker 2: in your life. Download your free copy of Breaking Free
- 3:10Speaker 2: from Stress today by visiting jackgram.org slash stress. That's jackgram.org
- 3:17Speaker 2: slash stress. In our last episode, we heard of the
- 3:22Speaker 2: demise of Zedekiah, who resisted God's will and the Babylonian
- 3:27Speaker 2: army to the bitter end. We saw the contrast between
- 3:30Speaker 2: his attitude and arrogance and that of the great prophet Jeremiah,
- 3:35Speaker 2: who obeyed God's will and even sacrificed his own comforts
- 3:38Speaker 2: for the safety and the sake of others. Today, we'll
- 3:42Speaker 2: hear how the remnant of Judah, who remained after the
- 3:45Speaker 2: Babylonian conquest, will attempt to rebuild a broken city. God
- 3:49Speaker 2: will bless the efforts of those who sought to live
- 3:51Speaker 2: peacefully with their oppressors, But yet we'll see how the
- 3:55Speaker 2: desire for power and control still overshadows the attempts to
- 4:00Speaker 2: put the city back together again. Let's listen now to
- 4:03Speaker 2: God's Word.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Judah had been captured. King Nebuchadnezzar demolished Jerusalem's defenses and
- 4:11Speaker 3: reduced the holy temple into a pile of rubble. The
- 4:15Speaker 3: wealthiest and most educated of Judah were carted off to Babylon.
- 4:20Speaker 3: There they were forced to contribute to the Babylonian economy.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Jeremiah remained in Judah at Mitzpah along with the poorest
- 4:27Speaker 3: of the country who were left to remain. There they
- 4:30Speaker 3: were governed by a man by the name of Gedaliah.
- 4:34Speaker 3: He swore to the remnant, saying, We must not be
- 4:37Speaker 3: afraid to serve the Chaldeans and Babylonians. I will represent
- 4:41Speaker 3: us to them and plead for their favor day and night.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Gedaliah led the remaining Hebrews as they worked the fields,
- 4:49Speaker 3: rebuilt homes, and stored up food for themselves. Each few
- 4:53Speaker 3: weeks a tribute would be required of them, and Gedaliah
- 4:56Speaker 3: would deal with their oppressors peacefully. Gedaliah desired for the
- 5:00Speaker 3: remaining survivors of the Babylonian conquest to survive. Not only
- 5:05Speaker 3: did they survive, but the Lord blessed their hand, and
- 5:08Speaker 3: their crops grew in great abundance. However, there were some
- 5:12Speaker 3: who were determined to fight against the Chaldeans. Ishmael, a
- 5:17Speaker 3: man of royal blood, hated that Gedaliah would submit to
- 5:20Speaker 3: Babylon with such ease. So he conspired against him to
- 5:24Speaker 3: assassinate him. Gedaliah slept in his home soundly after a
- 5:28Speaker 3: hard day at work. A shadow moved across the room
- 5:31Speaker 3: towards his bed. As the shadow grew larger over his bed,
- 5:35Speaker 3: Gedaliah drew his sword and caught the figure off guard.
- 5:38Speaker 3: It was not Ishmael, but his friend Johanan. Gedaliah put
- 5:43Speaker 3: down his sword and took a deep breath. Both men
- 5:46Speaker 3: were silent for a moment. Let me defend you, Johanan
- 5:50Speaker 3: whispered to his friend. If you die, all the Judeans
- 5:53Speaker 3: will be scattered. Let me go and assassinate him before
- 5:57Speaker 3: he does so to you. Gedaliah was old friends with Ishmael.
- 6:01Speaker 3: He could not believe he would do such a thing.
- 6:04Speaker 2: No, he replied.
- 6:05Speaker 3: We cannot be killing one another. Too many have been lost.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Weeks later, Gedaliah traveled to each village to check up
- 6:13Speaker 3: on the people. As he was walking, Ishmael and a
- 6:16Speaker 3: group of his men ambushed him. There was no time
- 6:19Speaker 3: to react. Gedaliah was struck down with one swipe of
- 6:22Speaker 3: Ishmael's blade. Over the next week, Ishmael began a tirade
- 6:27Speaker 3: of killing. He slaughtered priests and servants that were loyal
- 6:30Speaker 3: to Gedaliah. All those he did not kill, he took captive,
- 6:34Speaker 3: and Ishmael assumed governance of the Judean remnant. However, Johanan
- 6:39Speaker 3: would not allow his friend's death to go unpunished. He
- 6:43Speaker 3: rallied the leaders of the remaining forces and marched against Ishmael. There,
- 6:47Speaker 3: at the Pool of Gibeon, Johanan led a rescue mission
- 6:50Speaker 3: to save Ishmael's captives. Johanan fought with the rage of
- 6:54Speaker 3: a man who had just lost his friend. He wept
- 6:57Speaker 3: as he swung his sword. Eventually, he backed Ishmael into
- 7:01Speaker 3: a corner and the captives were released. However, Ishmael and
- 7:04Speaker 3: eight of his men escaped to the Ammonites. Johanan knew
- 7:08Speaker 3: that punishment awaited the remnant, since Gedaliah had been killed.
- 7:12Speaker 3: So he gathered the remaining women and children and fled
- 7:15Speaker 3: to Egypt to seek refuge. As Johanan and his people
- 7:19Speaker 3: were making plans to leave, Jeremiah stopped them. He stood
- 7:23Speaker 3: before the people and begged them not to go. He
- 7:27Speaker 3: knew that only slavery awaited them in Egypt. The Lord
- 7:30Speaker 3: has blessed our work here thus far. Our crops are steady,
- 7:34Speaker 3: and our relationship with Babylon is mending. Do not leave,
- 7:39Speaker 3: Jeremiah implored. But the people were still unsteady. They began
- 7:44Speaker 3: to clamor and grumble. Jeremiah lifted his voice for all
- 7:48Speaker 3: to hear and said, If you leave, famine and sword
- 7:51Speaker 3: will follow you. The Lord desires for this remnant to
- 7:55Speaker 3: build Jerusalem back to its former glory. Fear not, for
- 7:59Speaker 3: there are great things ahead. As Jeremiah was speaking, Johanan's
- 8:04Speaker 3: fist blew through his jaw. He fell to the floor. Disoriented,
- 8:09Speaker 3: he looked to see Johanan's angry and worried face. You
- 8:12Speaker 3: are a liar, Johanan spat. You are a tool of
- 8:16Speaker 3: the Chaldeans and Babylonians, nothing more. So Johanan bound Jeremiah
- 8:21Speaker 3: up and took him and the rest of the people
- 8:23Speaker 3: out of Judah towards Egypt. Little did they know that
- 8:27Speaker 3: the Lord had set in motion plans for Nebuchadnezzar to
- 8:30Speaker 3: overtake Egypt as well. There would be no escaping God's will.
- 8:38Speaker 2: In today's reading, Judah has been decimated by Babylonian forces.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Most of the Judeans who were left alive were taken
- 8:46Speaker 2: to Babylon as captives. The wealthiest were to integrate into
- 8:50Speaker 2: Babylonian society and contribute to the nation's economy. But there
- 8:55Speaker 2: was a remnant, the poorest population of Judah, left in
- 8:58Speaker 2: their land to rebuild. And Jeremiah, the great prophet of God,
- 9:02Speaker 2: remained as well. The Babylonians allowed a Judean to rule
- 9:07Speaker 2: the people and ensure that they served Babylon and paid
- 9:10Speaker 2: tribute when it was required. This duty was given to
- 9:14Speaker 2: a man named Gedaliah. He was wise and wanted to
- 9:17Speaker 2: see Judah rebuild and experience relative peace despite their terrible condition.
- 9:23Speaker 2: So he resolved to deal peaceably with the Babylonians and
- 9:26Speaker 2: the Chaldeans, making the best of a bad situation. Jeremiah
- 9:31Speaker 2: was there to support him. God blessed the efforts of
- 9:35Speaker 2: those who remained, and the land prospered. It was a
- 9:38Speaker 2: glimmer of hope for Judah, a sign that God was
- 9:40Speaker 2: still with them. But there were those who opposed Gedaliah
- 9:44Speaker 2: and hated the foreign invaders. They didn't want to keep
- 9:47Speaker 2: the peace, but continued to war against Nebuchadnezzar just as
- 9:51Speaker 2: foolishly as Zedekiah had done. One such person was Ishmael,
- 9:57Speaker 2: and he planned to kill Gedaliah and seize power. One night,
- 10:01Speaker 2: Gedaliah was surprised in his room by a man he
- 10:03Speaker 2: thought was there to kill him, but he was ready
- 10:06Speaker 2: with his sword. As it turned out, however, it was
- 10:09Speaker 2: a friend by the name of Johanan. Johanan cared a
- 10:12Speaker 2: great deal for Gedaliah and did not want to see
- 10:15Speaker 2: him fall to Ishmael, so he suggested they strike first.
- 10:19Speaker 2: killing Ishmael before he could get to Gedaliah. Here we
- 10:23Speaker 2: have two men, Gedaliah and Johanan, who both want the
- 10:26Speaker 2: same thing, but have different approaches. Johanan is quick to
- 10:31Speaker 2: turn the violence to defeat opposition from within. But Gedaliah
- 10:35Speaker 2: wisely knows that if they begin war with each other,
- 10:38Speaker 2: killing those who oppose them, Judah would be far worse off.
- 10:43Speaker 2: So he lets Ishmael live. It was an honorable choice,
- 10:47Speaker 2: but it didn't work out. as one day Gedaliah was
- 10:51Speaker 2: ambushed and killed by Ishmael. Now Judah was under the
- 10:55Speaker 2: leadership of a very cruel man who quickly went about
- 10:58Speaker 2: killing those who opposed him, including priests and servants who
- 11:01Speaker 2: had shown loyalty to Gedaliah. Johanan will not stand for this,
- 11:06Speaker 2: and once more he responds in anger with more violence.
- 11:10Speaker 2: He attacks Ishmael's men and nearly defeated him, but Ishmael
- 11:14Speaker 2: escaped at the last moment. Knowing there would be retribution
- 11:18Speaker 2: for his attempt, Johanan gathers women, children, and all those
- 11:21Speaker 2: not following Ishmael, making plans to flee to Egypt. It's
- 11:25Speaker 2: an understandable impulse, but Johanan wants to know it is
- 11:29Speaker 2: the right one, so he inquired of Jeremiah. The prophet
- 11:33Speaker 2: goes to the Lord for guidance, and we hear God's
- 11:36Speaker 2: response in Jeremiah 42, verses 11 and 12. Do not
- 11:42Speaker 2: fear the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Do not fear him, declares the Lord, for I am
- 11:47Speaker 2: with you to save you and deliver you from his hand.
- 11:51Speaker 2: I will grant you mercy that he may have mercy
- 11:53Speaker 2: on you and let you remain in your own land.
- 11:57Speaker 2: So what was the answer? Don't go to Egypt. God says,
- 12:02Speaker 2: trust me, your life will go from bad to worse
- 12:05Speaker 2: if you run away. Johanan had a choice, just like
- 12:10Speaker 2: so many to whom Jeremiah had spoken before. Trust God
- 12:13Speaker 2: and do His will, or take matters into your own hand.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Johanan chose the latter, and once more, Jeremiah suffers beatings
- 12:22Speaker 2: and imprisonment from those who refuse to listen to God's word.
- 12:26Speaker 2: The people fled to Egypt, not knowing that soon that
- 12:29Speaker 2: land too would fall to Babylon. If only, if only,
- 12:33Speaker 2: they had obeyed God and trusted Him, life would have
- 12:36Speaker 2: been so much different. It's so important. that we learn
- 12:40Speaker 2: from mistakes, including the mistakes of others. And we always
- 12:45Speaker 2: must remember and reflect daily on the fact that God
- 12:47Speaker 2: can be trusted, that his word is sovereign and secure
- 12:51Speaker 2: and supernatural, and that our future is secure because we
- 12:55Speaker 2: live with the promises of God. And it is always
- 12:58Speaker 2: right to run to the will of God and never
- 13:01Speaker 2: away from the will of God. Dear God, we always
- 13:05Speaker 2: thank you for the scripture, which teaches us how to
- 13:07Speaker 2: live our lives. We know that Even when things seem lost,
- 13:12Speaker 2: you are faithful and you preserve a remnant of people
- 13:15Speaker 2: for your glory. Help us always to listen to your counsel,
- 13:20Speaker 2: wise counsel that comes from you, to seek peace rather
- 13:23Speaker 2: than war, and that we would trust you for your
- 13:26Speaker 2: provision for our every need. In Christ's name, amen. Thank
- 13:32Speaker 2: you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
