Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey, hurdlers, Emily Abody here coming into your feed with
- 0:22Speaker 1: another installment of five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I'm happy
- 0:26Speaker 1: to report I'm feeling a lot more settled than I
- 0:29Speaker 1: was last Friday when I took a moment off from
- 0:33Speaker 1: the five Minute Friday grind because, as I have exhausted
- 0:38Speaker 1: here on the show, I finally made the big move
- 0:41Speaker 1: from Manhattan to Brooklyn last Thursday, and I am happy
- 0:44Speaker 1: to report that I'm feeling much more calm, much more organized.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Although my Memorial Day weekend plans are literally organizing, so
- 0:54Speaker 1: hey to teach their own. I'm excited for next week. However,
- 0:57Speaker 1: It's a big week for me here on the show.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I'm going to be bringing you five days of really
- 1:02Speaker 1: fun content surrounding running because Wednesday, June second is not
- 1:09Speaker 1: just my birthday, but it's also Global Running Day, so
- 1:12Speaker 1: to celebrate, my friends at Tracksmith are empowering me to
- 1:16Speaker 1: have some really fun conversations about the sport. About tips
- 1:20Speaker 1: and tricks that you need to know to stay mentally
- 1:23Speaker 1: tough on the run, how to start running if you
- 1:26Speaker 1: feel like it is just not for you, A little
- 1:29Speaker 1: bit of intel on the history of the sport, and
- 1:32Speaker 1: so much more with a lot of special guests, So
- 1:34Speaker 1: stay tuned for that. I am really really excited for
- 1:38Speaker 1: five Minute Friday Day. I want to talk about what
- 1:40Speaker 1: I did on Wednesday night, which was I went to
- 1:44Speaker 1: my first group fitness class in I don't know, fourteen
- 1:49Speaker 1: fifteen months since February of twenty twenty. I got invited
- 1:54Speaker 1: to a rooftop soul cycle class in Manhattan, and are
- 2:00Speaker 1: a lot of things I found really interesting about the experience. One,
- 2:02Speaker 1: I mean, what an amazing idea right to set up
- 2:06Speaker 1: a bunch of spin bikes on a roof overlooking all
- 2:09Speaker 1: of Manhattan. You had one World Trade in the distance.
- 2:13Speaker 1: It was an absolutely, absolutely stunning space. And it was
- 2:18Speaker 1: interesting because they had those headphones that you put on
- 2:20Speaker 1: your head where you heard the instructor through your headphones.
- 2:24Speaker 1: It wasn't like they were just yelling out into this
- 2:26Speaker 1: rooftop for all the neighbors to hear, so it was
- 2:28Speaker 1: kind of like a silent disco. So both of those
- 2:32Speaker 1: things pretty cool. But during this class, the weather forecast
- 2:36Speaker 1: was literally for the sky to drop like intense heat
- 2:40Speaker 1: here yesterday in New York City. I think it was
- 2:42Speaker 1: about like eighty five degrees when I walked out of
- 2:44Speaker 1: my apartment and we're about like ten to fifteen minutes
- 2:47Speaker 1: into this class. I am riding on a bike that
- 2:50Speaker 1: is right next to the perimeter of this tent that
- 2:52Speaker 1: is thankfully covering us, and the sky just opens so
- 2:58Speaker 1: as you can imagine, like so many being back in
- 3:00Speaker 1: a group fitness class. Melanie is preaching just like so
- 3:04Speaker 1: much amazing motivation. We're listening to the best playlist. I'm
- 3:08Speaker 1: like getting back in my element and remembering life a
- 3:11Speaker 1: year and a half ago. And it is soaking next
- 3:15Speaker 1: to me, so much so that as the wind starts gusting,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and the wind is gusting, the whole tent is moving,
- 3:20Speaker 1: it is just pelting me in the side. And I'll
- 3:24Speaker 1: be honest, I couldn't have been phased any less. What
- 3:29Speaker 1: an unbelievable moment to just be on that bike and
- 3:33Speaker 1: be fully present and remind myself that sometimes things aren't
- 3:38Speaker 1: going to go as planned. Sometimes you're gonna get a
- 3:40Speaker 1: little wet. But what's the worst thing that's going to
- 3:42Speaker 1: happen in that right that we're gonna get a little wet.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And so the rain was pouring, the vibes were high,
- 3:50Speaker 1: people were yelling. It was It was a lot, but
- 3:53Speaker 1: it was amazing and just such a necessary reminder that
- 3:57Speaker 1: you have to take the hurdles and punches as they come,
- 4:01Speaker 1: you know. I loved that. I loved that, And to
- 4:05Speaker 1: be honest, I'm loving just doing some of the things
- 4:07Speaker 1: that bring me, some of the small things that bring
- 4:10Speaker 1: me so much joy, like not having anxiety when another
- 4:13Speaker 1: vaccinated friend comes over for dinner, or being able to
- 4:17Speaker 1: run a race again. I raced a ten k last
- 4:20Speaker 1: week and I'm doing another race on Sunday. It's the
- 4:22Speaker 1: little things that bring me so much joy that I'm
- 4:25Speaker 1: so grateful for after just such an unbelievable year. I
- 4:30Speaker 1: prompt for you this week, when was the last time
- 4:34Speaker 1: you just kind of threw your hands up in the
- 4:36Speaker 1: air and went with the circumstances again. When was the
- 4:39Speaker 1: last time that you just said whatever, I'm just going
- 4:43Speaker 1: to roll with it. Highlights of the week. Links to
- 4:47Speaker 1: all of this goodness can be found in the show notes.
- 4:51Speaker 1: First up, Oprah Winfrey and Doctor Perry on healing from
- 4:55Speaker 1: childhood trauma and becoming self aware, confident adults. This episode
- 5:00Speaker 1: is from the On Purpose podcast with Jay Sheddy. Right
- 5:03Speaker 1: off the bat I love this episode because Jay totally
- 5:06Speaker 1: gushes over Oprah like you would expect anyone to gush
- 5:09Speaker 1: over Oprah. Jay Shetty, in his own right, has certainly
- 5:13Speaker 1: made a name for himself. He said, you made me
- 5:16Speaker 1: believe that consciousness and purpose could reach everyone on the planet.
- 5:21Speaker 1: He was talking to her about how she inspired him
- 5:23Speaker 1: to start this podcast, which is arguably the number one
- 5:27Speaker 1: health podcast that there is. It's a lot of powerhouses
- 5:30Speaker 1: teaming up on this episode with so many, so many
- 5:33Speaker 1: good nuggets that will really make you think about the
- 5:35Speaker 1: way you carry yourself in the day. Today. Another thing
- 5:41Speaker 1: that'll make you think Watch the Me you Can't See.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I'm sure you've heard about this now. It's on Apple TV.
- 5:46Speaker 1: It is a new docuseriies co created by Oprah herself
- 5:50Speaker 1: and Prince Harry, and it explores mental health and emotional
- 5:53Speaker 1: well being with stories featuring people from around the world.
- 5:58Speaker 1: It's literally just retelling at its core. It's timely and
- 6:03Speaker 1: it's spotlighting so many of the issues that Harry brought
- 6:06Speaker 1: up in that initial interview with Megan Markele and that
- 6:09Speaker 1: original Oprah interview talking about the need for understanding and
- 6:13Speaker 1: compassion and that it's so important that we speak up
- 6:16Speaker 1: about what's really going on. Something else worth highlighting by
- 6:21Speaker 1: a print from artist John Donahue. He's a former New
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yorker editor and cartoonist. He makes these amazing illustrations of
- 6:28Speaker 1: the outsides of New York City restaurants and greater than
- 6:31Speaker 1: New York City beyond that. But he's currently donating fifty
- 6:34Speaker 1: percent of all proceeds from these drawings to support restaurant
- 6:38Speaker 1: workers and owners impacted by the pandemic via the Restaurant
- 6:41Speaker 1: Workers Community Foundation. So definitely head on over to his
- 6:44Speaker 1: Instagram or linked in the show notes, of course, and
- 6:47Speaker 1: see what he's got there. And last, but not least
- 6:50Speaker 1: worth highlighting, watch Money Explained on Netflix. Whether you're looking
- 6:54Speaker 1: for an educational espresso shot or a full on crash course,
- 7:00Speaker 1: this is a limited series that offers comprehensive, engaging content
- 7:04Speaker 1: surrounding all the various topics of money, literally from credit
- 7:08Speaker 1: cards to casinos, scammers to student loans. It really delves
- 7:13Speaker 1: into the hows and the whys behind all things finances.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And now it's time for a listener question.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Hey there, I am a fairly new entrepreneur working on
- 7:25Speaker 2: building visibility for my business. So I can share my
- 7:28Speaker 2: message and my skills more widely. So my question is
- 7:32Speaker 2: how can fellow entrepreneurs thoughtfully pitch themselves for podcast guest opportunities?
- 7:38Speaker 2: What makes you say yes when someone asks to be
- 7:41Speaker 2: on your podcast?
- 7:43Speaker 1: What a great question. First and foremost, congratulations on beginning
- 7:48Speaker 1: your entrepreneurial journey. I know it's a huge step. It
- 7:52Speaker 1: can be really scary, so kudos kudos to you. When
- 7:56Speaker 1: it comes to pitching yourself to be on podcasts. First
- 8:00Speaker 1: and foremost, you need to really home in on what
- 8:03Speaker 1: it is that you are putting into the world. So
- 8:07Speaker 1: make sure before you do this reach out that you
- 8:10Speaker 1: are very concrete on who it is that you are,
- 8:14Speaker 1: what it is that you're doing, what it is that
- 8:16Speaker 1: you may be producing, and what it is that you're pitching. Right,
- 8:20Speaker 1: you want to make sure that the deck, so to speak,
- 8:23Speaker 1: that you are sending around really portrays you in your
- 8:27Speaker 1: best light. I say this all the time, but you
- 8:30Speaker 1: have to be your own biggest hype man. So make
- 8:33Speaker 1: sure in this deck, in these pitches, that you are
- 8:37Speaker 1: portraying the best of the best things about you, the
- 8:40Speaker 1: best things that highlight you. It's pretty likely that whoever
- 8:44Speaker 1: you may be pitching is getting a lot of pitches,
- 8:48Speaker 1: so you want to make sure that yours stands out
- 8:51Speaker 1: from the bunch. That means making sure that everything in
- 8:55Speaker 1: there is on point aside from the attention grabbing details,
- 8:59Speaker 1: and you want to make sure that your grammar is
- 9:02Speaker 1: on point, your voice is on point and authentic to you,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and also throwing things in there like photos making it
- 9:08Speaker 1: visually attractive all super super important when it comes to
- 9:12Speaker 1: who I say yes to if I don't recognize the
- 9:16Speaker 1: name right off the bat, oftentimes the thing that makes
- 9:18Speaker 1: me say yes to someone new is the compassion that
- 9:22Speaker 1: they tell their story with and the fact that it
- 9:25Speaker 1: makes me feel like this pitch is specifically curated for me.
- 9:30Speaker 1: The last thing that I really want is to be
- 9:33Speaker 1: made to feel like I'm just one of dozens and
- 9:36Speaker 1: dozens of shows, so to speak. If we're talking about
- 9:39Speaker 1: hurdle that this person is going after. I cannot tell
- 9:42Speaker 1: you how many times I have received a pitch where
- 9:45Speaker 1: the wrong show name is listed at the top, or
- 9:48Speaker 1: somebody else's name is listed at the top. Just as
- 9:51Speaker 1: important as being your own hype man, it is to
- 9:54Speaker 1: make sure that you are greeting the person that you
- 9:58Speaker 1: want to work with, with enthus usiasm and a personal touch.
- 10:02Speaker 1: That's it for this week. Make sure you are following
- 10:05Speaker 1: along with Hurdle at Hurdle Podcast. I am over on
- 10:07Speaker 1: the socials at Emily a Body and like I said,
- 10:10Speaker 1: stay tuned for a bunch of really fun content surrounding
- 10:13Speaker 1: Global Running Day at next Wednesday, I am super excited
- 10:17Speaker 1: for five days of the lace up. Kind of vibes
- 10:21Speaker 1: another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
