- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop perfectionism.
- 0:31Do you consider yourself a perfectionist?
- 0:34I used to consider myself a perfectionist when I was younger
- 0:38a lot I'm used to say, Oh no, it's got to be perfect.
- 0:41And I never understood the concept of looking at it and
- 0:44saying, well, how do you define perfect?
- 0:46What is perfect? What does that look like?
- 0:49Because listen, everybody's version of it is different.
- 0:52My version of a perfect chicken coop is far different than some
- 0:55people's. Some people's it's, you know,
- 0:57just a little tiny cage and they're in there and they're
- 0:59good. And they're like, oh, it's
- 1:00perfect. They're safe from predators.
- 1:02And me, it's more like, OK, not only do I want them to be safe,
- 1:06but I want them to be happy. And I want them to have this
- 1:11vast area. I want it to be clean.
- 1:13I can give you an entire list of how well I thought this out, but
- 1:17it was all based around the fact that, OK, I just want to create
- 1:21something that's in unbelievable.
- 1:24And that to me is always like hitting the level of
- 1:26perfectionism. When I was a kid, I used to get
- 1:30assignments in school and we would have to handwrite them a
- 1:34certain way. And the teacher that taught us
- 1:37writing in second grade was just unbelievable.
- 1:40Missus Walker. And she wrote the most, she had
- 1:44the most beautiful handwriting, and she taught us all to write
- 1:46that. Pretty much every girl in the
- 1:48class had the same handwriting writing because we would mimic
- 1:51over and over and over what she did and she would say, OK, it's
- 1:54got to be perfect. And she didn't do it in a bad
- 1:57way. It was just her way of doing it.
- 1:58Like you don't think about those things when you give them to
- 2:00child's a child's mind and say, OK, here you go.
- 2:03This is how we're going to introduce perfectionism to you.
- 2:06But for me, it was just something that I dove into
- 2:11first. It started with handwriting.
- 2:13I would write and rewrite, write and rewrite everything that I
- 2:16possibly could because I wanted to make sure that it was done
- 2:19just the correct way, just perfect.
- 2:23But it just slowed me down and it held back a lot of my
- 2:26creativity because I didn't want to make things too long to
- 2:29write. I can remember sitting and
- 2:32writing a story and saying I could have this whole section,
- 2:35but I don't want to sit there and have to rewrite it or right
- 2:39in this whole thing because the penmanship had to be perfect.
- 2:42Now, it's a silly, silly example, but the truth is, where
- 2:46does that show up in your life? Where does it still show up in
- 2:48my life? There are so many ways that we
- 2:51get stuck in this. And I, this is the point of
- 2:55today is not just to rail on perfectionism.
- 2:58The point is what does it rob you of?
- 3:01And it robs you of creativity. It takes away your ability to
- 3:05start to think differently, to see differently, to act
- 3:10differently, to be creative because you get stuck in the
- 3:13paradigm of perfectionism. And then all of a sudden there's
- 3:17no room for creativity, creativity in it.
- 3:19Because creativity can be messy. It can be unorganized.
- 3:23It can say, well, you know, I'm when I'm starting something, it
- 3:27all seems great in the beginning and then it looks like this big
- 3:30BLOB of a mess and then all of a sudden it comes together at the
- 3:32end. But when perfectionism is
- 3:35present, that big BLOB in the middle is yucky.
- 3:39It feels just one simple word, yucky.
- 3:42And this is not just for projects or things that you're
- 3:47building in your world, but it's also your world itself.
- 3:52So if you're going through a huge transition right now and it
- 3:55seems like you're questioning yourself about did I make the
- 3:58right decisions? Did I do all of what I was
- 4:01supposed to do? I should be somewhere else at
- 4:04this point in my life. If you start that, you often
- 4:07have to look back and say, OK, am I in a perfectionism frame
- 4:12that says this is how it should have been done?
- 4:14Because our certainty girls get triggered.
- 4:17Even Raven agrees with that one. Our certainty girls get
- 4:19triggered and all of a sudden you're working in a way that's
- 4:23robbing you of creativity, robbing you of possibility,
- 4:26robbing you of everything. And it's perfectionism kicking
- 4:30in. This is how it should not be.
- 4:33And, and you start to see like, well, if it was in a perfect
- 4:36world, when you start those sentences off that way, you know
- 4:40what's driving, you know what's happening.
- 4:42So I'm going to challenge you to really identify that piece of
- 4:46it. Look at how much is your
- 4:48perfectionism stealing your creativity from allowing you to
- 4:52be able to make whatever it is that you want to make out in the
- 4:56world. Nothing is more important, my
- 4:58friends. Not one thing is more important
- 5:00than dwelling in creativity. It is the, it is a, it is a
- 5:04superpower. It is a resource that you cannot
- 5:07do without and should not to do without.
- 5:09And the more you hunker down in this place of not understanding
- 5:15that, the more likely you are to suffer from it because it's
- 5:19everywhere. It's all around us.
- 5:21So go take a look at it and put it in a box because not the best
- 5:27tool to be using. OK everybody, have a blessed day
- 5:30and I will see you tomorrow. Bye.
