- 0:50Speaker 2: on Let's Talk.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carl Lee and I'm
- 0:54Speaker 3: here with Let's Talk. And Lisa Odie is my only
- 0:58Speaker 3: guest in the building today.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Good.
- 1:00Speaker 5: This is a scary thing.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Hollis Lewis is out today and we're we're Lisa. It
- 1:07Speaker 3: has been so it has been like so hot here recently,
- 1:13Speaker 3: Like you know, when you start talking about this kind
- 1:16Speaker 3: of heat and you start talking about like sports, right,
- 1:20Speaker 3: I mean, this is really really really considered what I
- 1:24Speaker 3: would call danger exactly.
- 1:26Speaker 6: Yeah, that's the pervading question. At least in our region,
- 1:29Speaker 6: is hot enough for you have you heard that maybe
- 1:32Speaker 6: once over the past weekend and probably the next four
- 1:36Speaker 6: or five days. But but yes, the extreme heat it's
- 1:39Speaker 6: affecting you know, all of the Midwest of course our
- 1:41Speaker 6: area and most of the East coast, and extreme heat
- 1:45Speaker 6: warnings are out and it did play, you know, some
- 1:47Speaker 6: some havoc with our Major League Baseball over the weekend.
- 1:52Speaker 6: The soaring tempts just affected some of the players, and
- 1:55Speaker 6: some of the bigger name players were affected. I just
- 1:57Speaker 6: wanted to bring that up and we can kind of
- 1:59Speaker 6: discuss a further. But over the weekend, one of the
- 2:03Speaker 6: shortstops for the Cincinnati Reds, Ellie Dela Cruz.
- 2:07Speaker 5: I think you've heard of him.
- 2:09Speaker 6: He fell ill during a game at Bush Stadium against
- 2:13Speaker 6: the Cardinals. He actually he left the field and his
- 2:20Speaker 6: manager stated, which I thought this was kind of a
- 2:21Speaker 6: funny way to put what happened, but he said, he stated,
- 2:24Speaker 6: he drank a bunch of water and then he went
- 2:26Speaker 6: right out and got rid of it. So obviously we
- 2:29Speaker 6: know what that means. But so but he was he
- 2:32Speaker 6: left the game for a period of time. It wasn't
- 2:34Speaker 6: a serious medical emergency. He was able to return and
- 2:37Speaker 6: the Reds were victorious in that game, so he was
- 2:40Speaker 6: able to come back and finish. The other player that
- 2:42Speaker 6: had affected it was a relieve a reliever pitcher for
- 2:47Speaker 6: the Mariners, Trent Thornton, And for him it was a
- 2:50Speaker 6: little more serious because during the fourth inning, I think,
- 2:55Speaker 6: not not the fourth I think it was later in
- 2:57Speaker 6: the game, but he actually had a physical event and
- 3:01Speaker 6: he actually had to be helped off the field by
- 3:04Speaker 6: the manager and by the assistant athletic trainer, and he
- 3:07Speaker 6: was immediately taken to an ice bath, which tells me
- 3:11Speaker 6: his may have been more closer to, you know, a
- 3:14Speaker 6: heat stroke rather than heat exhaustion. He did not return
- 3:17Speaker 6: their tempts at that time at the beginning of the
- 3:20Speaker 6: game was like you know, ninety four. They also had
- 3:24Speaker 6: some UMP's fall ill during that game as well. So
- 3:28Speaker 6: the reason I thought this would be a good discussion
- 3:30Speaker 6: obviously it's a current event, but also you've experienced I'm
- 3:34Speaker 6: sure periods of excessive heat during your summer training camps
- 3:40Speaker 6: the beginning of NFL season.
- 3:42Speaker 5: You know, how did that affect your play.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Well, I'll start you when you start talking about like
- 3:49Speaker 3: training camp. Yes, you know, I think at the end
- 3:51Speaker 3: of the day, like I think the coaches, the mentality
- 3:54Speaker 3: back then, before all of the notable issues that were
- 4:00Speaker 3: around heat, you know, the heat was like the hotter,
- 4:05Speaker 3: the better, you know, because you know that's gonna get you,
- 4:09Speaker 3: was the mentality. And and that's gonna get you in shape.
- 4:13Speaker 3: And but you had guys fallout. You had guys who
- 4:20Speaker 3: whatever they had had for lunch, whatever they had had
- 4:22Speaker 3: for breakfast, they couldn't, they couldn't, they couldn't keep it down.
- 4:25Speaker 7: And but the crazy thing about old school.
- 4:31Speaker 3: And most types of issues like this, no one sees
- 4:37Speaker 3: it as a issue.
- 4:39Speaker 7: It's just something. It's not dangerous. It's it's something that hey, sit.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Down, put an ice towel on, you sit for a
- 4:47Speaker 3: little bit, and go right back out. And you and
- 4:51Speaker 3: and we didn't know the risk that we were taking.
- 4:56Speaker 3: And a lot of times it's not even necessarily the coach.
- 5:00Speaker 3: A lot of times it's the player, like you want
- 5:03Speaker 3: to get back out there, you know. And and and
- 5:06Speaker 3: fortunately for me, you know, the few times that I've
- 5:10Speaker 3: ever really felt like I was i'd been overheated.
- 5:13Speaker 7: Like again, I'm right back in, you know.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Just get me on the get me on the sideline,
- 5:18Speaker 3: get me on the bench, get me a towel, dump
- 5:22Speaker 3: some water over me.
- 5:24Speaker 7: I'm good to go. And really, you're not.
- 5:28Speaker 5: You're not.
- 5:29Speaker 7: You're really you're not.
- 5:30Speaker 3: And I think I think in the on the high
- 5:33Speaker 3: school collegiate level, I think, and and and even matter
- 5:38Speaker 3: of fact, I'll even go down all the way down
- 5:41Speaker 3: to the youth levels. You have to be really, really
- 5:45Speaker 3: careful when you're talking about this kind of heat. And
- 5:48Speaker 3: anybody who's gets a little dizzy, feels like they're ready
- 5:53Speaker 3: to throw up, throws up, any of it.
- 5:56Speaker 7: That's a that's a signal that.
- 5:57Speaker 3: You should not medical treatment, you should not ignore, right
- 6:01Speaker 3: because at the end of the day, that practice play,
- 6:05Speaker 3: that practice time, they can make that up.
- 6:09Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure. And what I was going to say,
- 6:12Speaker 6: you know, they really they recommend. I know, there's some
- 6:15Speaker 6: strategies that you just recommended, like with the towel and
- 6:19Speaker 6: with the dump the water and all those things.
- 6:22Speaker 5: But you know, I guess prior to.
- 6:26Speaker 6: Training and all of this the season beginning, they also recommend,
- 6:30Speaker 6: like you know, doing those ninety minutes like heat exposures,
- 6:34Speaker 6: like you go out for you know, one one day
- 6:37Speaker 6: or two days a week for ninety minutes and kind
- 6:39Speaker 6: of expose yourself and gradually build that up. Yeah, was
- 6:43Speaker 6: that something you guys did or no?
- 6:45Speaker 3: If you know, we had, you know, again, at the
- 6:48Speaker 3: professional level, you got you know, you're in camp and
- 6:51Speaker 3: you've got two days, right, so you're coming out. You're
- 6:54Speaker 3: probably out on the field by nine or so, no
- 6:59Speaker 3: later than ten, and you're a yeah, and.
- 7:04Speaker 6: So why wouldn't they start earlier to avoid the heat?
- 7:07Speaker 6: They want you in the heat right thet.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I'm not going to say that they want you that's
- 7:11Speaker 3: just kind of the schedule, like you know, and it
- 7:13Speaker 3: could have been earlier, but you're gonna get two hours
- 7:16Speaker 3: worth of practice and you're going to be in full
- 7:19Speaker 3: gear and you're gonna get a break, you know. So
- 7:25Speaker 3: but how much of a break can you get, you know,
- 7:27Speaker 3: sipping water bottles and you know, or something in a cup.
- 7:31Speaker 3: It's it's really just not enough. But it was we
- 7:35Speaker 3: looked at it as this is what it is, right,
- 7:38Speaker 3: We knew knew. We didn't know a difference in you know,
- 7:43Speaker 3: you know it's hot, but you don't really know.
- 7:45Speaker 5: That was kind of the old school.
- 7:47Speaker 7: It was an old.
- 7:47Speaker 3: School, and you didn't really think that anybody was really
- 7:51Speaker 3: gonna fall out. And sometimes even when you think that,
- 7:53Speaker 3: they when they fall out, you're like that, you know
- 7:59Speaker 3: they they couldn't take it, right, They're not tough, They're
- 8:01Speaker 3: not tough enough. They couldn't take it. They can't they
- 8:03Speaker 3: couldn't go through it all. But I'm telling you, like
- 8:08Speaker 3: this type of heat, it can it can cause you
- 8:13Speaker 3: some really really major issues and.
- 8:18Speaker 7: You need to take you need to take account for it.
- 8:20Speaker 7: Like I know, we went we went bike riding the
- 8:23Speaker 7: other day and.
- 8:26Speaker 3: We went about ten fifteen miles or so, and I
- 8:32Speaker 3: could feel, yeah, like man, this was tough.
- 8:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 8:37Speaker 6: You don't even have to be active in no, just
- 8:40Speaker 6: literally like yesterday evening, I had the dogs out after
- 8:44Speaker 6: they'd eaten their dinner and I could just feel my
- 8:46Speaker 6: body like just the perspiration and I'm just sitting there
- 8:49Speaker 6: like out of the sun in the shade because of
- 8:51Speaker 6: the high humidity as well, which plays a huge part
- 8:54Speaker 6: in all of this.
- 8:55Speaker 5: But you know, the overall thing I think I.
- 8:57Speaker 6: Wanted to to kind of talk about too was the performance.
- 9:01Speaker 6: I mean, it's going to affect your performance out on
- 9:03Speaker 6: the field regardless. I mean, even if you're able to
- 9:05Speaker 6: stay on the field. You know, there's things that neurologically
- 9:09Speaker 6: and physically that it's it's got to slow you down.
- 9:13Speaker 7: Yes, I have to.
- 9:14Speaker 3: And again I'm I'm cautious in answering how you know
- 9:18Speaker 3: a certain kind of way because I don't want to.
- 9:20Speaker 3: I don't want to lead anybody to think like it's
- 9:22Speaker 3: okay what I'm saying, or how somebody handled it, how
- 9:26Speaker 3: I handled it doesn't make it right. I'm just want
- 9:29Speaker 3: to clarify that I think we get I think as
- 9:34Speaker 3: you go up the ladder, especially at the professional level,
- 9:39Speaker 3: you start to think that there isn't anything that can
- 9:43Speaker 3: can break you.
- 9:45Speaker 7: There isn't anything that can It shows weakness.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Yes, it's it makes you feel like you you it's
- 9:51Speaker 3: a it's a it's a male kind of thing that
- 9:54Speaker 3: like we don't want to you know, I know it's hot.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I don't want to fall out, I don't want to
- 9:59Speaker 3: throw up, I don't want to do anything. I don't want,
- 10:01Speaker 3: you know, I don't need any of those kinds of things.
- 10:04Speaker 7: And I think we have to be.
- 10:07Speaker 6: Careful well, don't you think the tides changed in that
- 10:11Speaker 6: whole attitude about the heat exposure with I think it
- 10:14Speaker 6: was two thousand and one. Was it Corey Stringer that
- 10:18Speaker 6: passed away during a practice? It may have been in
- 10:21Speaker 6: college or a high school student, I do from heat
- 10:24Speaker 6: related illness. It may have even been I think it
- 10:26Speaker 6: was a heat stroke, and that started to bring attention
- 10:30Speaker 6: to the dangers of extreme heat and athletes.
- 10:35Speaker 7: Yes, and I don't know.
- 10:38Speaker 5: I'm assuming I have to regulated now.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Yes, I was gonna say, I have to assume that
- 10:43Speaker 3: there is a huge regulation or something in place that
- 10:49Speaker 3: you have to do in those types of situations. If
- 10:53Speaker 3: we'd had a you know, maybe a coach or something,
- 10:56Speaker 3: they may know what those regulations have been or are now.
- 11:02Speaker 7: Because there's no way I can't imagine.
- 11:05Speaker 6: And if somebody out there can google Corey Corey Stringer
- 11:09Speaker 6: two thousand and one heat exhaustion incident. I couldn't remember
- 11:13Speaker 6: if it was a high school or college or even professional,
- 11:16Speaker 6: but I do remember the incident.
- 11:18Speaker 5: I remember it.
- 11:18Speaker 6: Was a big deal because he actually died during practice.
- 11:22Speaker 7: I've got it here.
- 11:23Speaker 8: It was during the Minnesota Vikings training camp two thousand
- 11:26Speaker 8: and one.
- 11:26Speaker 7: Oh Okay, okay, that's something I probably should have known.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Yeah, Okay, I knew it was Okay, Yeah, and it was.
- 11:33Speaker 5: It was a big deal.
- 11:34Speaker 9: It was.
- 11:35Speaker 5: And that's when it really started to throw light on
- 11:38Speaker 5: the dangers of this.
- 11:39Speaker 3: And you would like to think that it would have
- 11:44Speaker 3: it should have all maybe should have been already in place.
- 11:47Speaker 7: But again, at the at that level.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Everything is like, you you know, there's nothing that you
- 11:55Speaker 3: should be able to not do. You know, you got
- 11:58Speaker 3: to be able to deal with the cold, You got
- 12:00Speaker 3: to be able to do deal with the rain, you
- 12:02Speaker 3: got to be able to do with all the heat.
- 12:04Speaker 3: You got to like it's like you have to be
- 12:07Speaker 3: prepared to play in any condition that you that you
- 12:11Speaker 3: get and I do. Look when I look back at that,
- 12:14Speaker 3: I do get it because we played in every kind
- 12:17Speaker 3: of weather.
- 12:18Speaker 7: Possible, right right, But at the end of the day,
- 12:22Speaker 7: you know.
- 12:23Speaker 3: There's there's some safety issues that you have to consider.
- 12:28Speaker 6: And you could even go a step further with this
- 12:30Speaker 6: beyond the athletes on the field that are you know,
- 12:32Speaker 6: in whatever the you know, the event is what about
- 12:35Speaker 6: you know, like like what happened with that umpire during
- 12:38Speaker 6: that baseball game. You you know, there had to have
- 12:40Speaker 6: been incidents of heat related illness with with probably the fans, spectators,
- 12:45Speaker 6: and officials during some of those baseball games.
- 12:48Speaker 5: Of least, it affects everybody.
- 12:50Speaker 3: It does you, you because you're in the bleachers right
- 12:53Speaker 3: and cheering and thinking.
- 12:54Speaker 5: All and having a hot dog and a beer.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Yeah that it's not gonna it's not gonna impact you.
- 12:59Speaker 3: It it it actually will. And and I and I
- 13:04Speaker 3: just don't think that we've and I hate to say
- 13:07Speaker 3: it this way, I just don't think we've had enough
- 13:09Speaker 3: situations to where we look at this as a really
- 13:14Speaker 3: as a major thing, like like like it's not a
- 13:18Speaker 3: major concern. It's not like you know, to my knowledge,
- 13:22Speaker 3: I don't know that we've taken it serious enough or
- 13:26Speaker 3: or putting.
- 13:27Speaker 5: Maybe because that happen enough.
- 13:29Speaker 6: I mean, like these extreme heat types of of weather,
- 13:33Speaker 6: you know events, they're not every summer, and they're not
- 13:36Speaker 6: this you know this you know impactful, and they're not.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Every sport, you know. I don't think that we should
- 13:47Speaker 3: you know, we we have. I don't think we should
- 13:49Speaker 3: have to wait to understand prevention. Yes, how how how serious,
- 13:55Speaker 3: how risky it is to be in this type of
- 13:59Speaker 3: heat and exercising outside just you know, guaranteed somebody's out running, yeah, you.
- 14:07Speaker 7: Know, and and and they're loving it.
- 14:10Speaker 3: We rode bikes the other day, and and I'm I'm
- 14:14Speaker 3: putting on shirt after shirt after shirt after shirt and
- 14:17Speaker 3: my and my sweat jacket because I want to sweat, you.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Know, And.
- 14:26Speaker 5: Yes, are you serious?
- 14:29Speaker 7: Car?
- 14:30Speaker 3: And when I thought about it is when I got back,
- 14:35Speaker 3: because I was because I was soaked.
- 14:36Speaker 6: Did you feel like I did feel a little a
- 14:39Speaker 6: little easy a little.
- 14:40Speaker 7: Bit, but I was like, you know, hey, I did it.
- 14:44Speaker 3: I got I got a good sweat, lost a few paunds.
- 14:48Speaker 5: But you're living in that old school world.
- 14:51Speaker 7: Carl's using Mother nature sauna out there.
- 14:54Speaker 5: You know, I can't even believe he's saying this.
- 14:57Speaker 3: I mean, but I say it for the fact that,
- 15:00Speaker 3: like I know for a fact that there are people
- 15:04Speaker 3: like me right who are doing things who may not
- 15:08Speaker 3: even be that don't take it serious, Yeah, that don't
- 15:11Speaker 3: take it serious, may not be in the shape that
- 15:14Speaker 3: I'm not saying you have to be in shape to
- 15:16Speaker 3: do it. I'm not condoning what I did, but it
- 15:19Speaker 3: does help. And then how far and how much and
- 15:23Speaker 3: how strenuous the things that you're doing. You have to
- 15:27Speaker 3: pay attention to that in order to be safe.
- 15:31Speaker 5: So here's the question in the room. Here's the elephant
- 15:34Speaker 5: in the room.
- 15:35Speaker 6: What are some of the strategies that I know, it's summer,
- 15:38Speaker 6: it gets hot, we all know that. But what are
- 15:40Speaker 6: some strategies that may be Major League Baseball on these
- 15:43Speaker 6: other mid summer type of outdoor you know sports, what
- 15:48Speaker 6: could they do to maybe help alleviate or prevent some
- 15:51Speaker 6: of these things happening, like with these two players that
- 15:54Speaker 6: happened over the weekend and the official I mean, what
- 15:56Speaker 6: are some things they can do.
- 15:57Speaker 3: I think people would people would hate this, but I
- 16:00Speaker 3: think you need, especially in locations that are really hot,
- 16:05Speaker 3: you need indoor stadiums, you know. I think the I
- 16:08Speaker 3: think what solves this is indoor stadiums.
- 16:12Speaker 7: Okay, you know that solves your problem.
- 16:15Speaker 6: Or you schedule it, like if it's a matinee type
- 16:17Speaker 6: of game, you're gonna have to have it either early
- 16:19Speaker 6: in the morning or late in the evening.
- 16:21Speaker 5: I mean, whether the fans like it or not.
- 16:23Speaker 8: Major League Baseball does a little bit as you look
- 16:26Speaker 8: at a team's season schedule, if they move further into
- 16:30Speaker 8: the summer, the games during the weeks start a lot later,
- 16:33Speaker 8: like a lot of them are seven.
- 16:35Speaker 6: I'm not sure what time these games started. It was
- 16:38Speaker 6: so hot it didn't matter, probably even if they started
- 16:41Speaker 6: at seven.
- 16:41Speaker 8: Well, and this, this is maybe a deeper rabbit hole
- 16:44Speaker 8: than you want to go down. One of the differences
- 16:46Speaker 8: I think for for me, like talking about football versus baseball.
- 16:51Speaker 8: With football, you if you want to have your legs
- 16:54Speaker 8: the bottoms of your legs exposed, or if you want
- 16:56Speaker 8: your arms exposed. You know, you don't have to have fabric. Baseball,
- 17:01Speaker 8: I mean they came in game out all summer long.
- 17:04Speaker 8: They're wearing pants, you got that hot glove, you gotta
- 17:07Speaker 8: wear a hat. I mean it's and you know, sometimes
- 17:09Speaker 8: you're just standing out there and the.
- 17:11Speaker 5: Heat is in the sun bearing down on you.
- 17:13Speaker 8: I wonder if I mean people would revolt. I'm sure,
- 17:17Speaker 8: but I mean, is there something you could do maybe
- 17:19Speaker 8: with the uniform.
- 17:20Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a good that's a good point.
- 17:25Speaker 3: And I could I could see, I could see shorts,
- 17:28Speaker 3: I could see something like that. But again, sliding, yeah,
- 17:32Speaker 3: you know, all those kinds of things would would would
- 17:35Speaker 3: be the reason why you don't go there. But again,
- 17:40Speaker 3: I think the reality that the key piece to this
- 17:44Speaker 3: is indoor stadiums.
- 17:47Speaker 5: Or if you can't do that, sometimes who can't?
- 17:50Speaker 6: Here's my thing, Well tell me, I mean you got
- 17:52Speaker 6: to have money to build those indoor stadiums.
- 17:55Speaker 5: Some of these cities can't afford that. So I bet
- 17:57Speaker 5: that's an issue.
- 17:58Speaker 3: I bet you again when you start talking about when
- 18:02Speaker 3: you start talking about the NFL, the league itself could
- 18:08Speaker 3: could confirm that every team could have an indoor stadium
- 18:12Speaker 3: if they hadn't, if this was an issue. I'm not
- 18:14Speaker 3: sure how much baseball makes, how much the league itself makes, There's.
- 18:19Speaker 7: Gotta be there's got to be something.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Well, I will give credit.
- 18:23Speaker 6: I will give credit to Wrigley Field because they're going
- 18:26Speaker 6: to go a step beyond like the missing you know,
- 18:28Speaker 6: stations and all that. They're actually going to bring in
- 18:31Speaker 6: a portable, some type of a truck or something that
- 18:34Speaker 6: will be their cooling unit so that when a player
- 18:36Speaker 6: gets over you know, heated, or they feel like they
- 18:38Speaker 6: need a break, they can go into that. I don't
- 18:40Speaker 6: know how many stadiums have that, but at least they're trying.
- 18:42Speaker 7: Well, there are a few that are indoor.
- 18:44Speaker 8: I mean, you talk about down in Florida or American
- 18:48Speaker 8: Family Field in Milwaukee. They've got the removable roof the
- 18:51Speaker 8: Rogers Center up in Toronto. But other than that, I mean,
- 18:55Speaker 8: like the one I think of is maybe more like Minnesota.
- 18:58Speaker 8: Could you imagine in the spring game in March this Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 19:05Speaker 8: you need it for those fringe party sure season.
- 19:08Speaker 7: Yeah all right, Well.
- 19:10Speaker 6: You were a busy man this past weekend, Carle, Carly,
- 19:13Speaker 6: let me tell it. Let me tell the audience right now,
- 19:14Speaker 6: the listening audience, Carle is drinking coffee like it's it's just.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Going out of style.
- 19:21Speaker 6: And I walked into into the station this evening and
- 19:24Speaker 6: he was like, I'm living on coffee. And I'm like what,
- 19:26Speaker 6: because I've never really seen Carl drink this, drink coffee
- 19:30Speaker 6: like this. So Carl had a very busy weekend that
- 19:33Speaker 6: I'm very curious about. And I want to know what
- 19:35Speaker 6: happened this past weekend in Minneapolis.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Well, there's a there's a gentleman who's who is puts
- 19:44Speaker 3: on these events signings. We had a camp. I think
- 19:50Speaker 3: this is about the third year of the football camp
- 19:53Speaker 3: and he and he brings in a bunch of players
- 19:57Speaker 3: just for you know, for the excitement of it.
- 20:00Speaker 5: Okay, spill the tea.
- 20:01Speaker 3: We want names and we want we had we had,
- 20:05Speaker 3: we had Dante called Pepper. He was there, Jim McMahon
- 20:11Speaker 3: was there. Chicago and the Chicago Bear quarterback. Now, the
- 20:15Speaker 3: interesting component about that is I think he did play
- 20:18Speaker 3: a year in Minnesota, but you know he was a Bear.
- 20:22Speaker 7: But he he gets along.
- 20:26Speaker 3: He's the guy that gets along with any and everybody,
- 20:30Speaker 3: and and and Dante, who I am going to just
- 20:34Speaker 3: just so everybody knows, I'm going to go after him
- 20:36Speaker 3: as a guest, uh to get him on awesome.
- 20:42Speaker 7: I am shocked.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Did they do the Super Bowl shuffle?
- 20:46Speaker 7: I don't think. I don't think Jim can do that.
- 20:50Speaker 7: I don't think he could do it.
- 20:52Speaker 3: But what what was what was amazing to me was
- 20:56Speaker 3: to watch guys who were the epitome of the league
- 21:01Speaker 3: at one point in time, and how genuine they were
- 21:08Speaker 3: and and and personable to anybody who came up to
- 21:15Speaker 3: to sign like I saw, especially Dante. I'll give him
- 21:22Speaker 3: the huge props like I don't think he turned down
- 21:27Speaker 3: a any anybody signing. Let's say so, let's say we
- 21:32Speaker 3: we we signed for about an hour and we're walking
- 21:36Speaker 3: around somewhere in.
- 21:38Speaker 6: Now was this this autograph signing event combined with like
- 21:41Speaker 6: a football camp.
- 21:41Speaker 7: It was with a football camp.
- 21:43Speaker 3: It was with kind of everything all right, and so
- 21:47Speaker 3: all this stuff is done, but he's he's there and
- 21:49Speaker 3: somebody walks up to him and they'll say, hey, when
- 21:52Speaker 3: you sign this. Yes, I saw him with a couple
- 21:55Speaker 3: of little kids that no way they know who he was,
- 21:59Speaker 3: you know, but he was so kind to them.
- 22:03Speaker 7: That it was. It was. It was just amazing.
- 22:06Speaker 3: It made me feel proud, and it made me and
- 22:10Speaker 3: it made me think, like, so, if you're not Dante
- 22:13Speaker 3: colpep r. How do you not sign somebody's paper or
- 22:20Speaker 3: a hat or or something. You know what I'm saying, Sarah.
- 22:24Speaker 3: It was just it was for me, it was an
- 22:26Speaker 3: opportunity to see someone that played the game at a
- 22:31Speaker 3: very high level but yet could still was so relatable
- 22:37Speaker 3: and so kind to the public.
- 22:40Speaker 7: That it was.
- 22:41Speaker 3: I mean, it was unbelievable, and I think I think
- 22:44Speaker 3: the fans enjoyed it. I think they were like probably shocked.
- 22:48Speaker 3: And then Jim is just like he's just comical like
- 22:53Speaker 3: the whole time, and his jokes are not anything that
- 22:56Speaker 3: I could repeat, but they were some of them were good,
- 23:03Speaker 3: some of them were like, oh, you know, but he
- 23:09Speaker 3: was such like he was such he was such fun
- 23:12Speaker 3: that and again someone who you would think, I would
- 23:18Speaker 3: think would not be overly personable, but he was so
- 23:23Speaker 3: like he'd come get on, get on if we were
- 23:26Speaker 3: riding somewhere, were we were on some vands and stuff,
- 23:29Speaker 3: and he would come over and like he wouldn't sit byself,
- 23:33Speaker 3: he'd come sit right beside you, and then he nudge
- 23:37Speaker 3: on you and joke with you, and like like he
- 23:39Speaker 3: wasn't gonna ride on any of the transportation that we
- 23:42Speaker 3: had and sit beside you and not talk to you
- 23:46Speaker 3: and joke and and again. People have their ideas of
- 23:50Speaker 3: who these guys are and what they might be.
- 23:53Speaker 9: Like, and and and I and again I even had
- 23:59Speaker 9: that And it was so amazing to.
- 24:04Speaker 3: To have to to see guys that had played at
- 24:07Speaker 3: such a high level be so genuinely kind to players
- 24:13Speaker 3: they didn't know, sure players they played against the public kids.
- 24:20Speaker 7: I mean, it was it was unbelievable to me.
- 24:23Speaker 3: I was I was kind of like starstruck in my
- 24:26Speaker 3: own right because I just couldn't imagine, like, I don't
- 24:29Speaker 3: know what I thought they would be you know, but
- 24:32Speaker 3: I have seen that before at the high level guys
- 24:35Speaker 3: that are high level, I've seen guys do that, and
- 24:38Speaker 3: I was like, guys, man, I'm just curious about how
- 24:41Speaker 3: they're going to address it.
- 24:42Speaker 7: And it was so far on the other end of
- 24:45Speaker 7: it that I was amazed.
- 24:47Speaker 6: So the football camp part of it, now, how did
- 24:50Speaker 6: that work? Did they have like just area youth come
- 24:52Speaker 6: to that, and and did all the participants in the autograph?
- 24:55Speaker 5: Did you participate in that as well?
- 24:57Speaker 3: Yes, we had a couple a couple of guys played golf.
- 25:04Speaker 3: Some of the guys played golf, some of the guys
- 25:06Speaker 3: did the camp. So some of the some of the younger,
- 25:08Speaker 3: more mobile guys worked the camp, and some of the
- 25:12Speaker 3: other guys who have.
- 25:13Speaker 5: A little bit of what you're saying.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Not young, just mobile, so I should say young and mobile. Okay, okay, okay,
- 25:22Speaker 3: So you could if you were one of those, then
- 25:24Speaker 3: you you work the camp and and we we just
- 25:28Speaker 3: kind of broke it out into different sections. It's about
- 25:32Speaker 3: eighty kids or so. Yeah, and every every one of
- 25:37Speaker 3: the players that were there had an opportunity to kind
- 25:41Speaker 3: of speak to the kids, talk to them about life
- 25:45Speaker 3: and sports and all that kind of stuff, whatever they
- 25:48Speaker 3: whatever they wanted, and I thought that was something that
- 25:52Speaker 3: was that was really really kind of kind of special.
- 25:55Speaker 3: So and I'll give this. The gentleman who puts this
- 25:59Speaker 3: on his name is Buddy Becker. He's the guy that
- 26:03Speaker 3: contacts everybody, pays everybody gets.
- 26:06Speaker 7: Their flights, hotel meals, all that kind of stuff.
- 26:11Speaker 3: You can't like, like, I don't know anybody who does
- 26:15Speaker 3: that kind of stuff, you know, But he, he and
- 26:20Speaker 3: another gentleman named Kevin, they have started kind of working
- 26:24Speaker 3: together doing these kinds of things. And these and the
- 26:27Speaker 3: areas that we go to are a ways from the
- 26:31Speaker 3: cities and you know, the Twin Cities, so they're not
- 26:34Speaker 3: like right down in the cities. We're out and about
- 26:37Speaker 3: in smaller communities. Yeah, and I think that I think
- 26:41Speaker 3: that's what's really really important about it, is that we
- 26:44Speaker 3: get to those communities who.
- 26:45Speaker 7: Typically don't see players.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, and then it's so cool to watch
- 26:52Speaker 3: these young kids who you know, don't know, don't know,
- 26:55Speaker 3: you don't know anybody.
- 26:56Speaker 7: There, and just the way they just small when you sign.
- 27:01Speaker 3: And I mean, so it's really before yes, yes, for sure, Yeah,
- 27:07Speaker 3: I'm probably I'm.
- 27:08Speaker 7: Probably me and me and Jim are probably well Scott
- 27:14Speaker 7: Studwell was there who was a linebacker for it?
- 27:16Speaker 5: Do you play against Jim?
- 27:18Speaker 6: Yes, okay, I couldn't remember if that was the same
- 27:21Speaker 6: time period.
- 27:22Speaker 3: Unfortunately, Yes, somebody asked me. I think I think Dave
- 27:28Speaker 3: asked me on the show before if I if I
- 27:30Speaker 3: had picked them, and I'm like, I don't know. I'm
- 27:34Speaker 3: gonna have to go back and look at that because
- 27:35Speaker 3: if I, if I did, I want to make sure
- 27:37Speaker 3: he knows that the next time.
- 27:39Speaker 7: We hook up.
- 27:41Speaker 5: You need you need to do some research.
- 27:43Speaker 7: I need to do a little bit of research.
- 27:44Speaker 3: But I know this. We you know the Bears huge season.
- 27:50Speaker 3: I don't remember which what season that was, was like
- 27:54Speaker 3: eight eighty nine or so or late eighties, late eighties.
- 27:59Speaker 7: I don't think.
- 28:00Speaker 3: I don't think that I would have picked them that
- 28:04Speaker 3: season because I think they were perfect in every category possible.
- 28:08Speaker 6: So they were still they're still memorable, and you still
- 28:11Speaker 6: remember that run.
- 28:12Speaker 3: I'll make the case to this to this day, I
- 28:16Speaker 3: think that's probably the best defense and possibly the best team.
- 28:23Speaker 7: That the league has ever seen.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Oh no, I'm gonna let me say really I'm going there,
- 28:32Speaker 3: but let me just say this.
- 28:33Speaker 6: To the New England Patriots during their era. The let's
- 28:37Speaker 6: think about the recent Kansas City chief.
- 28:39Speaker 3: I get it, I get it. Now, here's what I'm
- 28:41Speaker 3: going to tell you. Okay, why, here's why I say that. Wow,
- 28:44Speaker 3: let's hear the why. The physicality of what the Bears
- 28:47Speaker 3: were then versus what it is today.
- 28:52Speaker 7: But the rules were different, The rules were different.
- 28:54Speaker 3: And I'm just saying, if you, if you play the
- 28:56Speaker 3: Bears in the Bears era, they they don't have no
- 29:00Speaker 3: problem putting putting my homes on his back and sending
- 29:03Speaker 3: him to the where he's can't come back. They don't
- 29:07Speaker 3: have no problem with that. You you, that's a bold statement.
- 29:12Speaker 3: I know, I know, but and you're staying on your
- 29:18Speaker 3: business because I just don't know if there was, if
- 29:21Speaker 3: there's ever going to be a more physical team.
- 29:25Speaker 7: And then again, their offense was even.
- 29:28Speaker 5: Physical, Like yeah, they know they were.
- 29:30Speaker 7: You're right, and so you.
- 29:34Speaker 3: The great quarterbacks today are mobile and all those kinds
- 29:38Speaker 3: of things.
- 29:38Speaker 7: Sure, but the defensive.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Lineman, the linebackers you're talking about, Singletary, you're talking about,
- 29:45Speaker 3: like you, that whole defensive line, that whole defensive secondary,
- 29:50Speaker 3: like it was an.
- 29:52Speaker 5: Amazing fans still talk about it.
- 29:55Speaker 7: Yeah, it would have been early in your career.
- 29:57Speaker 8: It was actually nineteen eighty five and one Super twenty.
- 30:00Speaker 6: Yes, okay, okay, the Men eighties, Yeah, we were close.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Yeah, eighties, eighties, And I'm telling you, I don't think
- 30:10Speaker 3: to this day when I think about a team, like
- 30:15Speaker 3: you know, there was some really good teams back then, sure,
- 30:17Speaker 3: but there was nothing.
- 30:19Speaker 7: Like that Bears team. There was nothing to me that
- 30:24Speaker 7: Bears team was.
- 30:25Speaker 6: So how old is McMahon now, I think he's I
- 30:29Speaker 6: think he's I mean, I can you.
- 30:31Speaker 3: Look that up because I think I think he's older,
- 30:34Speaker 3: just a little bit older than me.
- 30:35Speaker 7: I think he might be just a little bit older
- 30:37Speaker 7: than that.
- 30:37Speaker 6: Because you yeah, that would make sense because you had
- 30:39Speaker 6: to been really early in your career eighty five, right.
- 30:42Speaker 7: Yeah, because I came in I got drafted in eighty three.
- 30:45Speaker 6: Yeah, so you were, so I was just getting it
- 30:48Speaker 6: just past your rookie year sixty five.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Now he's sixty five. Yeah, okay, yeah, so he was
- 30:54Speaker 3: one year ahead of me.
- 30:55Speaker 7: Okay.
- 30:56Speaker 3: So and again, like I said, man, you know, getting
- 31:00Speaker 3: a chance to kind of like hang out be around
- 31:02Speaker 3: him was was interesting because again he had like he's
- 31:10Speaker 3: just so much fun, like he's he's never serious.
- 31:13Speaker 5: We need to get him on this show.
- 31:14Speaker 3: We can we get we we got a shot at
- 31:15Speaker 3: it because I got access to him. So yeah, so
- 31:18Speaker 3: if we can get him and we can get Dante,
- 31:21Speaker 3: yeah yeah, you know, we would be doing good.
- 31:23Speaker 7: We'd have Uh.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Now, I'm not even gonna go there. We're gonna take
- 31:29Speaker 3: a quick break and we'll be back.

- 33:01Speaker 2: Now back into the conversation.
- 33:04Speaker 3: So I had to take a quick break for us.
- 33:06Speaker 3: That's something that I probably didn't want to.
- 33:08Speaker 5: Say, and I wish you would have. It wasn't horrible.
- 33:12Speaker 6: We were just talking about the beauty of podcasts would
- 33:16Speaker 6: take care of things like that. So Carl, I know
- 33:19Speaker 6: some conversations we've had in our text threads with Hollis,
- 33:23Speaker 6: and we miss Hollis because I know he would have
- 33:24Speaker 6: had a lot to say about this subject.
- 33:26Speaker 5: But some of.
- 33:27Speaker 6: The things that we were talking about is training camps
- 33:31Speaker 6: and how for some players it is something that they
- 33:36Speaker 6: either they don't enjoy, or they don't complete, or they
- 33:40Speaker 6: get really frustrated with, or.
- 33:42Speaker 5: Some don't even show up.
- 33:43Speaker 6: So you know, those things tell us a little bit
- 33:46Speaker 6: about your experiences with training camps and what you see today.
- 33:49Speaker 3: I missed two days two days of training camp because
- 33:56Speaker 3: of my contract, of all of the contracts that I signed,
- 34:01Speaker 3: which is.
- 34:01Speaker 5: One of the major reasons.
- 34:02Speaker 3: Why a lot of players it has got it has
- 34:05Speaker 3: become something that.
- 34:07Speaker 5: You can use to get out of.
- 34:09Speaker 3: It, get out of training camp. But back then, you
- 34:14Speaker 3: really didn't want to not go to camp unless you
- 34:18Speaker 3: were truly comfortable with being at a position that.
- 34:23Speaker 7: You knew that you were going to be.
- 34:24Speaker 5: Like Aaron quarterback.
- 34:26Speaker 7: Yes, if if if.
- 34:29Speaker 3: You're unsure of where you're you know whether or not
- 34:31Speaker 3: you're going to start, you're coming to training camp. I
- 34:34Speaker 3: don't care what the contract issue is because you've got
- 34:38Speaker 3: to show up, you know. And but I think now,
- 34:42Speaker 3: I think when you look at what is.
- 34:44Speaker 5: It six weeks it was technically it was.
- 34:47Speaker 7: I always thought it was four. It was four weeks for.
- 34:49Speaker 6: Us extended it. But if if well, that may be true.
- 34:57Speaker 6: But if they have extended it, I'm sure that it
- 34:59Speaker 6: is not at the same level level of what it
- 35:03Speaker 6: was in four weeks. Yeah, because you're talking about again
- 35:07Speaker 6: this type of heat. If you know, if this type
- 35:09Speaker 6: of heat is out there, you're still practicing and you're
- 35:12Speaker 6: still going full gear.
- 35:13Speaker 7: And now do you get a break?
- 35:16Speaker 3: Yeah, you get a couple more breaks, but still in
- 35:19Speaker 3: this kind of heat and training camp is is the
- 35:24Speaker 3: deciding factor of whether or not you're going to play?
- 35:28Speaker 5: Yeah, is it once or twice a day?
- 35:30Speaker 3: It's twice a day you'll do We did. We did
- 35:34Speaker 3: two weeks of two a days back in the day,
- 35:38Speaker 3: and then we go to one day, one a day
- 35:42Speaker 3: as we got closer to the end. And those too
- 35:45Speaker 3: A days, I mean, they were they were, they were tough.
- 35:49Speaker 3: But at that point when you come out of the
- 35:52Speaker 3: two to day's sessions, you're probably either somewhat close to kind.
- 35:57Speaker 7: Of figuring out.
- 35:58Speaker 3: The coaches are pretty much trying to figure out who's
- 36:02Speaker 3: going to be playing and who's going to be starting,
- 36:05Speaker 3: who's going to be here, who's going to be there,
- 36:07Speaker 3: and it's starting to kind of pan out to them
- 36:10Speaker 3: at that point now. And I say that because if
- 36:16Speaker 3: you're going to a camp, training camp, camp period, high school, college,
- 36:24Speaker 3: it's really important to show everything that you got as
- 36:30Speaker 3: quick as you possibly can, because you know, if you're
- 36:35Speaker 3: looking to get you know, there's guys that are starters,
- 36:37Speaker 3: who have acculades, who've started for five years, ten years, whatever,
- 36:41Speaker 3: you know, and you're trying to get it on the
- 36:44Speaker 3: field right. You're getting on the field basically because of
- 36:49Speaker 3: training camp, because once training camp's over, unless that guy
- 36:53Speaker 3: is they want, they know who they want. And the
- 36:56Speaker 3: guys who are playing, unless they're really playing bad or
- 37:01Speaker 3: they're just not helping the team, or you're close to
- 37:07Speaker 3: that player's talent, you're gonna likely to get some some snaps,
- 37:12Speaker 3: which is my situation. To get to play was the
- 37:16Speaker 3: opportunity a guy got hurt and decided not to take
- 37:22Speaker 3: a shot, and Bud Grant gave me, gave me the start,
- 37:29Speaker 3: and I think I've said this before, and I get
- 37:32Speaker 3: a game winning interception against Detroit and that was the
- 37:36Speaker 3: beginning of my career. And that was that was in
- 37:38Speaker 3: my third year. That was the beginning of my career
- 37:41Speaker 3: of finding success in the NFL. My rookie season, I
- 37:46Speaker 3: got an opportunity to play and I moved positions the
- 37:53Speaker 3: second year back to safety. So and I didn't start
- 37:56Speaker 3: in the beginning of the season there either, but I
- 37:59Speaker 3: quickly he moved back because safety was a different position.
- 38:03Speaker 3: I thought I was a safety because that's what I
- 38:05Speaker 3: was in college in high school. And I was like thinking, like, Okay,
- 38:08Speaker 3: I'm gonna I'm gonna let me go back to what.
- 38:11Speaker 7: I started to know. Yeah, and I went back.
- 38:18Speaker 5: And it was a little different.
- 38:21Speaker 3: The guys who were breaking through the line of scrimmage
- 38:24Speaker 3: did not look like what they looked like when I
- 38:26Speaker 3: was at Marshall.
- 38:29Speaker 5: Don't let me get yeah, I had a.
- 38:32Speaker 3: They were not small and I we talked about Jim McMahon,
- 38:35Speaker 3: I'll talk and maybe I've told this story before, but
- 38:39Speaker 3: Walter Payton actually broke through the line of scrimmage and
- 38:46Speaker 3: I'm at safety and never in my childhood.
- 38:52Speaker 7: Of all the dreaming of playing in the league.
- 38:56Speaker 3: That's not the scenario that I ever ever kay on
- 39:00Speaker 3: my mind, and I will never forget it. So I'm looking,
- 39:04Speaker 3: I'm looking, and it just it just blows open, right,
- 39:08Speaker 3: and I'm like, okay, one thing, I for sure he
- 39:12Speaker 3: is not gonna change his direction for me, so you know,
- 39:17Speaker 3: like there's no reason for him to think like he's
- 39:19Speaker 3: gonna shake and bake and and go.
- 39:22Speaker 7: Around me or anything.
- 39:24Speaker 3: This was his opportunity to say, Okay, I am Walter Payton,
- 39:28Speaker 3: welcome to the league.
- 39:30Speaker 7: And I'm like thinking, okay. So I'm looking at.
- 39:34Speaker 3: Him, and I'm like thinking, okay, he's not gonna come
- 39:37Speaker 3: off course, so I can just go ahead and just
- 39:39Speaker 3: run right at him and we'll just see what's happening. Lisa,
- 39:44Speaker 3: Like I'm on my way there, and I'm and again
- 39:48Speaker 3: I'm thinking maybe Marshall.
- 39:49Speaker 7: I'm thinking maybe high school.
- 39:51Speaker 3: Like, hey, I'm gonna make this play. I do make
- 39:55Speaker 3: the tackle, but when I make contact with him, it's like.
- 40:01Speaker 7: I hit I hit him, and it was like hitting
- 40:04Speaker 7: a wall.
- 40:05Speaker 3: So my whole body, my whole body just stopped and
- 40:13Speaker 3: I'm like, Okay, what's happening here?
- 40:15Speaker 7: Like you know what's right.
- 40:17Speaker 3: No, he's not going down and he's continuing to move forward.
- 40:21Speaker 7: Now I can feel myself on my heels, and.
- 40:24Speaker 3: I'm thinking, okay, I am getting ready to go fall over.
- 40:30Speaker 7: I am not anymore.
- 40:34Speaker 3: He hits me, and the only way he falls is
- 40:37Speaker 3: because I'm falling down. I'm falling backwards and he's trying
- 40:41Speaker 3: to run through me, and he trips over me and
- 40:45Speaker 3: falls And I realized, then, okay, you know there's there's
- 40:51Speaker 3: there is a time when you say, okay, I'm in
- 40:53Speaker 3: the NFL. Yes, that was a time that I realized that, okay,
- 40:59Speaker 3: this is this is this is different. Can I coach?
- 41:02Speaker 3: Can I play corner?
- 41:07Speaker 5: I just had this great idea. I really I think
- 41:13Speaker 5: I should probably say no question.
- 41:14Speaker 3: I think I am a better corner than a safety.
- 41:17Speaker 7: Well, you mean to tell me you would have rather
- 41:20Speaker 7: been lined up against Terry Rice twice? I would take
- 41:26Speaker 7: Jerry Rice.
- 41:27Speaker 3: I would take any receiver in the league instead of
- 41:35Speaker 3: that tackle with Peyton. I'd almost be willing to set
- 41:40Speaker 3: the corner on the gold line with a guard coming
- 41:44Speaker 3: to blow me up.
- 41:45Speaker 5: He's saying he ate some humble pip. Yeah.
- 41:47Speaker 7: Well, running running backs were built different. I mean they
- 41:51Speaker 7: were bigger than.
- 41:52Speaker 3: And their mindset with the mindset was different, you know,
- 41:56Speaker 3: and you had the big safeties you had easily you
- 41:59Speaker 3: had like there was all these Ronnie Lott you had
- 42:05Speaker 3: all these huge safeties that would just knock your head off.
- 42:08Speaker 7: And corners were little physical. We was kind of physical.
- 42:11Speaker 3: But we were playing man and man and and that
- 42:14Speaker 3: was the kind of the that was.
- 42:15Speaker 7: You know.
- 42:16Speaker 11: So we were chasing receivers and hitting receivers and then
- 42:21Speaker 11: unfortunately for me, for whatever whatever call we had on
- 42:26Speaker 11: the defensive side, it was not the right calling.
- 42:34Speaker 5: I have to go back and look at these tapes.
- 42:36Speaker 3: Oh look, I'm just telling you they it's the game
- 42:41Speaker 3: was just different, you know. It was it was and
- 42:44Speaker 3: I don't mean this in a bad way, like there's
- 42:46Speaker 3: not men there now, but back then it was it
- 42:50Speaker 3: was men really wanting to dominate other men. And and
- 42:54Speaker 3: the Bears, that Bears team was so full of it.
- 42:59Speaker 3: Like they they they knew what they had, you know,
- 43:02Speaker 3: they had this pressure defense.
- 43:05Speaker 5: That they had no fear.
- 43:06Speaker 3: They had no fear, and they were doing everything that
- 43:09Speaker 3: they liked, right, you know. And again a few years
- 43:13Speaker 3: later we end up going to some bumping, we go
- 43:17Speaker 3: when we go, Pete Carroll comes in, we go to
- 43:19Speaker 3: bump and run, and we've got Chris Dowman, Keith Millard,
- 43:24Speaker 3: Henry Thomas, all these guys that could rush the passer. Sure,
- 43:28Speaker 3: all of a sudden, now we're that team, you know.
- 43:31Speaker 3: So it was that it was time where each each
- 43:35Speaker 3: team was building defenses, like you had to have a
- 43:38Speaker 3: defense that had something going, and so quarterbacks feared our
- 43:43Speaker 3: d line and that helped us out on the on
- 43:46Speaker 3: the edges of playing man the man.
- 43:48Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 43:49Speaker 6: You know, it's funny how the Pendulums have have swung
- 43:51Speaker 6: from a defensive focus to now it's more of an
- 43:54Speaker 6: offensive focus. Don't you feel like in this day as
- 43:57Speaker 6: absolutely all about the quarterback and the running back and
- 44:00Speaker 6: and what the offense produces.
- 44:01Speaker 3: I think that's because of the excitement of the fans
- 44:05Speaker 3: who want it's what the fans want. And again, I
- 44:09Speaker 3: don't know where the fans stopped loving the defense, and
- 44:13Speaker 3: I don't know if they stopped and just but they
- 44:16Speaker 3: just decided that.
- 44:19Speaker 6: Yeah, And I think for a fan that's not truly
- 44:22Speaker 6: understanding the game, they're not going to be as appreciative
- 44:25Speaker 6: of the defensive game.
- 44:26Speaker 5: As they are the offense, because the offense is you know.
- 44:28Speaker 6: Exciting to touchdown running, and they don't appreciate, you know,
- 44:33Speaker 6: a defensive type of game.
- 44:35Speaker 5: As a fan that understands it.
- 44:37Speaker 7: I think, I think you're spot on. And I think too.
- 44:43Speaker 3: To to look at a let's say, a corner cover
- 44:48Speaker 3: receiver is not overly exciting.
- 44:51Speaker 7: You know.
- 44:51Speaker 3: Now you know, if that guy's on your you know,
- 44:54Speaker 3: if that's a guy you're rooting or the team that
- 44:56Speaker 3: you're rooting on, he knocks the ball down, you're like, okay, cool,
- 44:59Speaker 3: second and long. You don't really you're not focused on
- 45:03Speaker 3: that sexy. It's not it's not really sexy. It's just
- 45:07Speaker 3: and again, you go back in those days, so many
- 45:11Speaker 3: people were playing bump and run. The fans liked it
- 45:16Speaker 3: because you're in most cases you're blitzing and you've got
- 45:19Speaker 3: guys coming all over the place. Quarterbacks are getting knocked around. Yeah,
- 45:23Speaker 3: and the and the fans love that kind of stuff.
- 45:26Speaker 3: And now it's just it just is it's a lot,
- 45:29Speaker 3: it's a lot different.
- 45:30Speaker 6: Well, the quarterbacks are protected more now than right there,
- 45:33Speaker 6: right and right, Lisa, Yeah, they have to be, but
- 45:36Speaker 6: still at during that time period, they didn't have nearly
- 45:40Speaker 6: the protections that they do now, and so they got
- 45:42Speaker 6: hit pretty hard.
- 45:43Speaker 3: Yeah, and and and I make the case to get
- 45:46Speaker 3: a to get a flag on the quarterback, you really
- 45:49Speaker 3: truly have to be late. But anything else, like if
- 45:54Speaker 3: you if you're before the whistle, everything was good all yeah,
- 46:00Speaker 3: and you know, and there was you know, there was
- 46:02Speaker 3: like like the diving on the pal you know, it
- 46:06Speaker 3: is like just a little crack that you can get
- 46:08Speaker 3: your helmet in. You were diving in and that was okay,
- 46:15Speaker 3: but imagine, imagine, And this is this is why I think.
- 46:18Speaker 6: Probably encouraged even yes, I mean, if it was legal,
- 46:22Speaker 6: your sage probably said, go for it.
- 46:23Speaker 3: If you could get a guy out of the game,
- 46:26Speaker 3: you know, if you could get a guy out of
- 46:27Speaker 3: the game that's that can beat you, then yeah, more
- 46:31Speaker 3: power to you. Right that now they have to come
- 46:34Speaker 3: up and try to replace that player. So it and
- 46:38Speaker 3: I think the further back you go, I think the
- 46:41Speaker 3: more physical the game was. And again to your point
- 46:46Speaker 3: about rules and regulations that you can't do this, you
- 46:49Speaker 3: can't do that, I think that has.
- 46:54Speaker 7: Changed the way the game.
- 46:55Speaker 5: Looks, and it needed to.
- 47:00Speaker 6: I think we've kind of gone overboard with it, maybe
- 47:03Speaker 6: a little further than we needed to, but definitely some
- 47:05Speaker 6: changes needed to happen.
- 47:07Speaker 3: And I hate, I hate to say this, but like
- 47:10Speaker 3: I just think, like the guys in the secondary, yeah,
- 47:14Speaker 3: just don't not everybody, not all of them, but there's
- 47:17Speaker 3: a lot who just they don't tackle like you know,
- 47:21Speaker 3: they don't do the they don't have the physicality in
- 47:24Speaker 3: their mindset. They knocked the ball, they knocked the ball down.
- 47:28Speaker 3: They don't necessarily want to make the tackle. If it's
- 47:31Speaker 3: a running back coming at you, they don't necessarily want
- 47:33Speaker 3: to make that or they don't look like they want
- 47:35Speaker 3: to make it.
- 47:36Speaker 8: Do you think maybe the leagues maybe build a little
- 47:39Speaker 8: bit more around speed you've got, I mean like running
- 47:42Speaker 8: backs that are also potentially a receiver, like I think
- 47:46Speaker 8: about like Christian McCaffrey, or you've got like Travis Kelcey
- 47:49Speaker 8: the tight end spot.
- 47:50Speaker 7: I mean he's really just a giant receiver receiver.
- 47:53Speaker 8: Yeah, you get all these people out of the box
- 47:55Speaker 8: and running down the fields. So for one, that's going
- 47:58Speaker 8: to give you more of that protection you look at
- 48:00Speaker 8: on the quarterback, But it's just everybody running everywhere and
- 48:03Speaker 8: you never know where the ball is going to go.
- 48:04Speaker 3: When you talk about Kelsey, like the crazy thing about
- 48:07Speaker 3: that there were a few tight ends. We actually had
- 48:10Speaker 3: one Steve Jordan, who was so athletic that no linebacker
- 48:15Speaker 3: could really cover him. And and then the other problem
- 48:19Speaker 3: is they're too big for me, you know what I'm saying.
- 48:22Speaker 3: So those kind of guys now are amazing because you
- 48:28Speaker 3: you can't find anybody that can cover him. You can't
- 48:30Speaker 3: put a corner on them because they're too big. They're
- 48:33Speaker 3: bigger there mighty. I mean, they might as well be
- 48:36Speaker 3: an offensive tackle.
- 48:38Speaker 8: Well, who wants to tackle the guy that's six foot
- 48:40Speaker 8: seven and pounds.
- 48:42Speaker 3: No, I mean unless you're alignment. Unless you're alignment, you know,
- 48:49Speaker 3: you might be okay with that. But he's down the field,
- 48:52Speaker 3: he's not going to be nowhere near you to have contact.
- 48:55Speaker 3: And then be him knowing you're that size and who
- 49:00Speaker 3: and knowing that no one wants to hitch he's looking
- 49:02Speaker 3: for a Yeah he's got he's trying to make a highlight. Yes,
- 49:09Speaker 3: I'm trying to stay out of the highlight, and he's
- 49:11Speaker 3: trying to make.
- 49:11Speaker 5: Trying to make one.
- 49:12Speaker 7: Yeah, it's it's.
- 49:13Speaker 3: It's interesting just to see the size of guys playing
- 49:20Speaker 3: and and now playing a position. You know, you got
- 49:24Speaker 3: him at running back, you got you know, you got
- 49:27Speaker 3: a good average size of probably six two six three
- 49:31Speaker 3: probably at wide receiver now with amazing speed and now
- 49:36Speaker 3: you're talking about a six six sixty seven tight end speed.
- 49:40Speaker 6: That's just that's just the way it is every position
- 49:43Speaker 6: now pretty much in the NFL.
- 49:44Speaker 5: That's a fact speed.
- 49:46Speaker 7: Do you think their agilities may be better than what
- 49:48Speaker 7: it was? Absolutely? I think in this day and time.
- 49:52Speaker 3: If if there's anything that the league has, anything that
- 49:55Speaker 3: the players have and a true advantage on is there
- 49:59Speaker 3: everybody the whole group is way more athletic, a whole
- 50:04Speaker 3: lot faster and and I think that in the game
- 50:11Speaker 3: now you're looking at that on offense and defense all
- 50:13Speaker 3: at the same time, you know, and the game is
- 50:16Speaker 3: just faster now, it's just more athletic.
- 50:19Speaker 6: And you've got to attribute that just the science of football.
- 50:22Speaker 6: I mean, they've learned so much about you know, physical
- 50:24Speaker 6: training and preparation and bodybuilding and all the things that
- 50:28Speaker 6: are required to get to that athletic, you know level,
- 50:32Speaker 6: and they have it now.
- 50:33Speaker 5: They have all that.
- 50:34Speaker 3: Well you look at you look at quarterbacks. That quote
- 50:37Speaker 3: used to scramble. You look at those quarterbacks, okay, and
- 50:40Speaker 3: they were they were magical. They were like, oh my gosh,
- 50:43Speaker 3: did you see stallback?
- 50:45Speaker 7: You know?
- 50:46Speaker 5: But now that's common.
- 50:48Speaker 3: It's yeah, and and and some of these guys are
- 50:52Speaker 3: amazingly athletic and making people miss. And you're thinking, that's
- 50:59Speaker 3: a quarterback. That's not a running back.
- 51:01Speaker 7: You know.
- 51:03Speaker 3: You know, when did a quarterback get to like to
- 51:06Speaker 3: be like a Patrick Mahomes.
- 51:07Speaker 7: Like, how's that pass?
- 51:09Speaker 5: How the game's evolved?
- 51:09Speaker 3: Yeah, but that is truly how the game has evolved.
- 51:12Speaker 3: And it's and it's to me, I think it's just
- 51:15Speaker 3: gonna keep going.
- 51:16Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, so we say anything else.
- 51:21Speaker 5: I think that's it.
- 51:22Speaker 6: We somehow jumped from training camps. But that's okay. We
- 51:25Speaker 6: made a good comeback with our subject at the end.
- 51:27Speaker 5: So we're good. We're good.
- 51:28Speaker 3: All right, ladies and gentlemen. We appreciate the time, and
- 51:31Speaker 3: we will be back again.
