- 1:21And with that, let's welcome Ryan and Doug to BreakFix.
- 1:24Welcome.
- 1:25Hey guys.
- 1:26It's quite intro.
- 1:27Yeah, thanks for having us.
- 1:28Great intro.
- 1:29You guys like that?
- 1:30Eric knows how to read a bio.
- 1:32I like that.
- 1:34Next time in haiku form, please.
- 1:36Speaking of that, these are two big shows coming together.
- 1:40This is a bit of East meets West, and we really want to get the East
- 1:43Coast guys to better understand where you guys are coming from.
- 1:46A Denver based automotive enthusiast podcast.
- 1:50So, like all good Break Fix stories, there's a superhero origin story.
- 1:54Tell us about Ryan and Doug.
- 1:55How did you guys get started in cars?
- 1:58How did the love affair begin?
- 1:59How did you guys get together?
- 2:01Who wants to go first?
- 2:02Ryan?
- 2:02Show started because of Doug's wife.
- 2:05We actually had a mutual friend, Doug's wife is an architect.
- 2:08We had a neighbor who's an architect.
- 2:09They had worked together at one time and they said, Hey, we have a new neighbor.
- 2:12Who's a car guy.
- 2:13Just moved here from Chicago.
- 2:15You should meet our other friend.
- 2:16Who's a car guy.
- 2:16We got the families together for lunch or dinner, whatever it was pretty quickly.
- 2:20It was the two of us at the end of the table jabbering about cars.
- 2:23And it was your wife.
- 2:24It said, you guys sound like a car podcast.
- 2:26It was all downhill from there.
- 2:28And here we are.
- 2:29And we sat down one night with an iPhone, got loaded up on bourbon.
- 2:33Our original band name was Burples and Backfire.
- 2:36That's what we thought we would start off with.
- 2:37We just sat down though.
- 2:38We kind of did a test of concept of it.
- 2:40And as always, he and I always had a great conversation.
- 2:43Just talking about cars.
- 2:44We're similar ages and we sort of have like a shared common sort of like.
- 2:47Tapestry, if you will, sort of car history and car culture.
- 2:50So it just kind of got going from there and hasn't really stopped.
- 2:52I don't know if I'd go that far, Doug.
- 2:54You grew up with Peugeot's and Mercure's oddballs.
- 2:57Yeah.
- 2:57Yeah, that is true.
- 2:58We were a little more mainstream in the Barkey house.
- 3:01That's true.
- 3:01I guess you'd read about those cars, those exotic cars in your magazine.
- 3:06Two different back to back 505 Peugeot station wagons and a Mercor
- 3:09XR4 TI in my young driving career.
- 3:12All right.
- 3:13So, okay.
- 3:14Mercor XR4 TI for everybody listening in Europe, that's what we
- 3:17called the Ford Sierra over here.
- 3:19So that's a cool car.
- 3:21Like hands down, I am super jealous.
- 3:23Every once in a while you see one of those, but the 505 Peugeot,
- 3:26what makes that car cool is that it's a station wagon.
- 3:29I am a long roof society guy, if there ever was one.
- 3:32So I got to give you.
- 3:33Massive points, even though it's French.
- 3:36And really it's my mom that deserves the points.
- 3:38She was the one that fell in love with it and bought two of them back to back.
- 3:40But you know, I agree.
- 3:41And it's also just a very handsome looking car.
- 3:43I mean, if you go back and look at them, they stand up well today.
- 3:46And a very practical car.
- 3:48It had a lot of interior space for the size footprint of the car.
- 3:50You could fit a lot of stuff inside of it.
- 3:52So.
- 3:52That was a good one.
- 3:53The AmeriCorps and the Peugeot were kind of my first two cars.
- 3:55I drove them both in high school as I got my license a little bit.
- 3:58Those are my first two experiences.
- 4:00Doug, didn't you buy those at that same dealership that Jay
- 4:02Leno worked at in high school?
- 4:04Isn't that the connection?
- 4:05Yeah, although you're correct, we are like a Colorado based car podcast.
- 4:09I'm from Massachusetts originally, so I grew up outside of Boston.
- 4:12The dealership that we got the Peugeots from was called Foreign Motors West.
- 4:16Cause there was a foreign motors East, but this was foreign motors West.
- 4:18It was in the suburbs, uh, West of Boston.
- 4:20I've listened to enough of Jay Leno's interviews that I know he worked at
- 4:23that dealership when he was a young teenager before he came out and
- 4:26made a career in comedy at the time.
- 4:28We were going there.
- 4:29It was Rolls Royce, Bentley.
- 4:31Range Rover and I think Jaguar and then Peugeot was their entry level cars.
- 4:36You know, as the car was being serviced, which it happened a lot, I was able to go
- 4:40over there and just sort of move through each brand had its own like separate sort
- 4:43of like small little building showrooms.
- 4:46I can move through the different ones and see all the higher end, mostly
- 4:49British cars, which was awesome.
- 4:50I loved going out there.
- 4:51Well, since we're talking about origins here and growing up in New England
- 4:55for you, Ryan, I heard that you're a transplant to the Denver area too.
- 4:59You're not originally from there either.
- 5:01Yeah, I'm a Midwestern guy, born in Madison, Wisconsin,
- 5:04bounced around a lot growing up.
- 5:06My dad was a college professor chasing tenure.
- 5:08So a lot of Midwestern college towns.
- 5:10Then lived in Chicago for about 20 years before we moved out
- 5:12here to Denver nine years ago.
- 5:14We were a little more mainstream growing up.
- 5:16We were a Volkswagen family.
- 5:19I still own a Volkswagen to this day.
- 5:21My daily driver is a 2017 Tiguan.
- 5:23Somewhere along the line, you know, my dad got a BMW, an E30, a 325.
- 5:28And my first car was an E20, a 320i.
- 5:31It was all kind of downhill from there, turned into a Porsche.
- 5:34There's a story behind that E30 though, isn't there?
- 5:36I heard it had something to do with the acquisition of that car.
- 5:38Oh, that's right.
- 5:39Yeah.
- 5:39So we grew up, we had Volkswagens and Chrysler minivans, right?
- 5:43We lived in Indianapolis at the time and there was a chain of car
- 5:46washes called Mike's Car Wash.
- 5:48Well, Mike was this like local celebrity, right?
- 5:50On TV and on all this and his personal ride was an 87, 325.
- 5:55It was red with gold BBS wheels.
- 5:57And he would park that thing out in front of the car wash every day.
- 5:59We drive past it.
- 6:00And I thought that thing was the coolest and eventually popped up
- 6:03with a for sale sign randomly.
- 6:05My dad just did to buy it.
- 6:07And it was, I thought it was the coolest thing.
- 6:08I took that car to prom a few years later and, uh, I eventually bought
- 6:13the 320 and always German cars though.
- 6:16Somewhere along the line, got into Porsches.
- 6:18My dad drives a pretty nice Porsche now himself, but always German
- 6:22stuff, American stuff, never anything too weird like Peugeot.
- 6:25Is there even a Peugeot dealership in the state of?
- 6:27I don't, I don't think there was.
- 6:28So at the time we were in Indianapolis and Dreyer and Reinbold, they actually
- 6:32ran race teams for many years.
- 6:34Their dealership was in Indianapolis.
- 6:36And, you know, you're talking late eighties, early nineties,
- 6:38a BMW was a pretty exotic car.
- 6:40They weren't the commodity cars that they are now.
- 6:43Right.
- 6:43They were still taxi cabs in Europe.
- 6:45I'm just saying, right.
- 6:48Guys, do you notice at least here locally in Denver, our mail is delivered in
- 6:52Mercedes Metris vans now, but they cover up the Mercedes star with an Eagle.
- 6:57Have you noticed as not to dilute the brand or whatever, right?
- 7:01Anyway, Pujol would have just been.
- 7:03Crazy talk, a little too heady rather for Indianapolis, I think, Doug.
- 7:06I think you're confusing like headiness or whatever with just unusualness.
- 7:10It wasn't like necessarily like a really nice car.
- 7:13I mean, they're pretty standard cars in France, but they are exotic.
- 7:16I will give you that.
- 7:16You don't see them every day.
- 7:18And that actually sort of leads into my next thought, which is, Ryan, it sounded
- 7:22like The E30 got you excited about cars, like Volkswagens and Caravans,
- 7:25eh, whatever, you know, but that E30 started to make the blood pressure rise.
- 7:30And Doug, the Peugeot is, like you said, it's not that exciting.
- 7:32So was there a car that sort of invited you in to becoming an enthusiast?
- 7:37My dad is a big car enthusiast, and that's really where it comes from.
- 7:40The first car I can remember him having was, it was something
- 7:42called a Dodge 0124, I think.
- 7:44It was one of those little front wheel drive, you know, sort of
- 7:47like two door kind of coupe things.
- 7:49Would have been in the late 80s.
- 7:50He upgraded to a Dodge Daytona Shelby Z, which was sort of like the
- 7:54ultimate expression of that sort of front wheel drive two door personal
- 7:57luxury coupe things that Dodge and Chrysler groups were selling.
- 8:00You know, he was a child of the sixties.
- 8:01So he was thrilled to find that there was a car that Shelby had officially
- 8:05worked on, or, you know, at least licensed out his name to that he
- 8:08could actually afford and get.
- 8:10I just remember him coming back.
- 8:11They went off to go buy the car.
- 8:12We stay with our grandparents and I just saw them coming down the road.
- 8:15And I couldn't believe when the car that was in front of him turned out of the
- 8:18way and I was suddenly revealed with this bright red Dodge Daytona Shelby
- 8:21Z, which I, I mean, it might as well have been a Testa Rossa at that point.
- 8:24I didn't know anything about her, but like it was red.
- 8:27It has.
- 8:27Spoiler, it was a manual, it was turbocharged.
- 8:29I didn't know things about like front wheel drive and
- 8:32torque steer and understeering, handling, that kind of thing.
- 8:35And between that and the fact that he had constantly until to this day, even has a
- 8:39subscription to road and track magazine, which, you know, I just voraciously ate up
- 8:43every time came in the house between that and hearing stories from him about going
- 8:47to formula one races at Watkins glens with all his college friends and just.
- 8:50All these great sort of stories.
- 8:52I mean, the Ford V Ferrari story was told in my house, like, as if it was
- 8:55just the immaculate reception, just part of like normal pop culture.
- 8:58I just thought that's what everyone learned about.
- 9:00So that's what got me going in that.
- 9:01I appreciate the Peugeot, but you're right.
- 9:03It's not really like the, uh, Tabru car that, that you might think.
- 9:06Doug touched a little on magazines and I think that was a huge driver, no pun
- 9:10intended for both of us growing up.
- 9:11Doug was a road track guy.
- 9:13I was a car and driver guy.
- 9:14I lived for those magazines that show up in my mailbox, you know, once a
- 9:18month, Chabacheta and, and Brock Yates and John Phillips and all those guys
- 9:22just made such an impression on me.
- 9:23And I was never a big sports kid growing up.
- 9:26So instead of baseball stats, it was me in that road test digest, you know, at
- 9:30the back, we all know and love, right.
- 9:32You know, this is when a fast car was anything under about
- 9:3515 seconds in the quarter mile.
- 9:37Ryan can still to this day still pull up 0 60 times on some of these old cars.
- 9:40You know, that we fondly remember and he's usually right on it.
- 9:43It could be better, right?
- 9:43It was all about the 0 60 time.
- 9:45We didn't realize that they were like sacrificing clutches
- 9:47to get to these times, right?
- 9:49All it meant was that it could do it once and that meant it could
- 9:51do it in less than a minute.
- 9:52That's right.
- 9:54Well, Brad, I think we should probably take a pit stop.
- 9:56And since we're all, you know, Petrel heads of a certain age.
- 9:59I want to dive into the children of the eighties questions that we
- 10:03like to throw at some of our guests.
- 10:05So I think we'll start with poster on the wall.
- 10:07What was in your bedroom?
- 10:08It could have been a pinup.
- 10:09I mean, I get that, but car that was on your wall as a kid.
- 10:14I'm going to tell you something very embarrassing.
- 10:15Before I got into cars, I was really into fire engines.
- 10:19So I literally had posters of fire engines on my wall until about 11 or
- 10:2312, and then I got into, I think I was a Lamborghini guy at first, I had a
- 10:27neighbor who, uh, was a bit of a playboy and who had a 911 turbo and black with
- 10:32silver BBS wheels, and that turned me into a Porsche guy pretty early on.
- 10:36Never a Ferrari guy, that was something I never had a poster of, there was just
- 10:39something about Porsche or Lamborghini that just seemed, the wings and all,
- 10:43just seemed a little, little extra.
- 10:45Yeah, that's my secret.
- 10:46It was fire engines for a long time.
- 10:48Embarrassing.
- 10:49Along the same lines, I remember I had like one of those trapper keeper folders,
- 10:52like one of those like cardboard ones that you would put like in the notebook
- 10:54and it was all trucks, semi trucks.
- 10:57You know, that's what I was really into.
- 10:58I guess I didn't know that Doug, you know, like the ones with like
- 11:02the little sleeper cabs on the back, the big, like, you know, Peter belts
- 11:05and Mac trucks and things like that.
- 11:07Flat nose, like a cab over, like all of them.
- 11:11So yeah, that was sort of my summer story there, but like.
- 11:14As far as the poster cars though, and I still actually have all three of these.
- 11:17Uh, there was a red Countach, a yellow Dino, and a silver 959 Porsche.
- 11:22I have those actually still at my garage.
- 11:24And then a little bit later, it's not technically an eighties car, but then
- 11:27also the Viper GTS, the original one blue with the white stripes down the middle.
- 11:31It was on my wall as well.
- 11:32So Brad, what was on your wall?
- 11:34I know one of them.
- 11:35What is one of them?
- 11:36The Fiero.
- 11:37Yeah, just because of the, um, the well endowed woman on the front,
- 11:43that's why the Fiero is there.
- 11:46No, at least the woman was well endowed.
- 11:48Yeah.
- 11:48He hates Fieros by the way.
- 11:50Really?
- 11:51Do you remember how exotic those seemed though?
- 11:53They were mid engine, they are, they were mid engine two seaters.
- 11:57What's the zero to 60 time on that, Ryan?
- 12:00Well, are we talking the GT or what was the two M four?
- 12:03What was it?
- 12:04Two M six, two M six.
- 12:05Right.
- 12:06Yeah.
- 12:06That's that's right.
- 12:07I think the GT was probably a smoke and 8.
- 12:097, but I I'll have to check that one.
- 12:12I had a radio controlled Pontiac Fiero as a toy.
- 12:14I remember that.
- 12:15That was probably faster than the real thing, Doug.
- 12:17Yeah.
- 12:17Right.
- 12:18More reliable too.
- 12:22Brad, what else was on your wall?
- 12:23I never really had a lot of posters on my wall.
- 12:25It was like all bands and like music and stuff like that.
- 12:28For me, the car stuff was the Hot Wheels.
- 12:30I had a A Kunta, I had a tester and a nine 11, and those were
- 12:34my favorite when I was a kid.
- 12:36Right.
- 12:36On acquiring mines.
- 12:37Want to know what band posters were on you all?
- 12:40Van Halen, guns N Roses, A CDC.
- 12:42Right on.
- 12:43And all that good stuff.
- 12:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:45To my Euro trash.
- 12:47It's all heavy metal for Brad . We are yin and yang when it comes
- 12:51to music, that's for sure.
- 12:52But you know, we both appreciate each other's styles, so it's all good.
- 12:55Yeah, yeah.
- 12:56What were you into then?
- 12:57Oh, man.
- 12:58So right above my bed was a black on triple black 930 turbo.
- 13:04Nice.
- 13:04It was gorgeous.
- 13:05I finally sold that picture not long ago.
- 13:08It was framed and everything, and I never had place for it
- 13:10in the house that we're in now.
- 13:12I have a lot of vintage stuff in the house, like old Nurburgring, Raleigh.
- 13:15I'm a big Group B fan, so that was huge for me.
- 13:18My room was adorned with 118 scale model cars, which I still have.
- 13:22You sniffed a lot of glue growing up, huh?
- 13:24These are all metals.
- 13:25So I have close to 70 of them right now, which is, which is not a huge collection,
- 13:31but it's a lifelong collection.
- 13:33So those have always been important to me and they've survived moves
- 13:35and kids and everything else.
- 13:37Yeah.
- 13:37The one big poster on my wall in my room was the nine 30 and downstairs
- 13:42we had sort of like a playroom study area for me and my sister.
- 13:45And the one poster that sort of survived and Brad's going to laugh at me because
- 13:48I make fun of him relentlessly for this.
- 13:50I had a from the Porsche factory cutaway blueprint of the 924 up on the wall.
- 13:57Yeah.
- 13:57That was given to me by one of the Porsche training instructors
- 14:00for like the engines and stuff.
- 14:02And so to me, it wasn't the coolest Porsche, but I was like,
- 14:05this is like a factory thing.
- 14:07This is super cool.
- 14:08And so I had that up on the wall and I would just kind of stare at it.
- 14:11And excellent.
- 14:11That's fantastic.
- 14:13I can also confirm, even though you say you hate this car, at some point in
- 14:17your life you had one of these on your wall, because I got it from your mom.
- 14:21Ah!
- 14:21Hahaha!
- 14:22That's true, I forgot about that.
- 14:24Nice!
- 14:25I'm sorry.
- 14:26Did you say I got it from your mom?
- 14:28Yeah.
- 14:28Yeah.
- 14:29My mom, Eric and I went to high school together.
- 14:34Yeah.
- 14:34We know each other a long time.
- 14:36We'll get from his mom.
- 14:39I'm sorry if you're listening to this, but yeah, no, my mom was never the
- 14:44type to like, throw my stuff away.
- 14:46So it's like, she kept all this stuff.
- 14:48Ridiculous.
- 14:48And I forgot, I even had that at 50, whatever, which it's in better hands
- 14:52now, because that's where Brad and I differ on the Ferrari camp, which
- 14:56actually leads into our next question.
- 14:58You guys are sitting at the boardroom table and you guys are the ones
- 15:02that have to make the decision.
- 15:03Do you build the nine 59 or the F 40?
- 15:07That's such a tough one, guys.
- 15:09I'll answer quickly 'cause I know I mine, I had my answer.
- 15:12And then I'll give Ryan some time to say F 40.
- 15:14Yeah, F 40 for me says the guy with the 9 59 poster.
- 15:18Oh yeah, yeah.
- 15:19Well, what I was gonna say is that that came as like a set and like, so
- 15:23I put it up there, but like I didn't get Porsches until I was older.
- 15:26I thought the nine 11 looked weird.
- 15:27Honestly, I never liked it.
- 15:28And right next to osa, Kunta, you know, Italian stuff, I mean, it looks
- 15:33kind of weird and funky at first.
- 15:35I was wrong.
- 15:36I mean, I admit that now I'm, I'm, I'm okay.
- 15:38Saying that it's like one of these things you grow into you.
- 15:39It's like you grow to appreciate it.
- 15:41Like no one in my close circle, I didn't see very many of them in real life.
- 15:44I didn't really understand one until I heard an air cooled, you know, at
- 15:47full song driving by me at one point.
- 15:49And then I sort of kind of light bulb kind of went off, but yeah, I mean,
- 15:52at that point, yeah, I mean, F40 to me is it's a top three car, so that's, I
- 15:56have to go ahead and say yes to that.
- 15:57I feel like it was like a, a moment in time where Ferrari was
- 15:59just willing to try everything.
- 16:00They kind of threw out this interesting thing out there.
- 16:02Most expensive car was Spartan on the inside.
- 16:05I mean, they were charging all this money for this, this car that was basically
- 16:08just like so harsh and, and unusable in so many ways, but such a pure expression
- 16:13of what they could do at that time.
- 16:14And I like that it has rally car roots in it as well, which is unusual for supercar.
- 16:18As a fan of group B, I think you could probably verify that the
- 16:21roots of that started in group B.
- 16:23It, it was sort of an evolution of their.
- 16:24Program that was never really fully completed.
- 16:26But you know, that's where it came from.
- 16:28So yeah, F40 for me all day long.
- 16:30And guys, you know, I'm a Porsche guy through and through there's
- 16:32something about an F40 to me.
- 16:34It's, it's probably the most desirable Ferrari ever.
- 16:37Yeah.
- 16:37The nine 59 is just sort of a fancy nine 11.
- 16:40Let's be honest.
- 16:41Right.
- 16:41It's a nine 11 with Quatro.
- 16:43I just wanna point that out.
- 16:44It's true, true . I mean, it was way ahead of its time.
- 16:48Adjustable ride height.
- 16:49You know, you can go on and on.
- 16:50There's something very special and, and maybe that's what I would actually buy.
- 16:53The old Who would you marry?
- 16:54Who would you have date?
- 16:55You know, I, I think I'd date the F 40, but I'd probably marry the nine.
- 16:59Five nine.
- 17:00There's a reason I've owned a few Porsches, right?
- 17:02They're safe.
- 17:03That f40 is a little dangerous maybe.
- 17:05And that's what makes it exciting.
- 17:07Yeah.
- 17:07And I, so I think I'm going to have to go f42.
- 17:11That's surprising.
- 17:12Brad will never give me the satisfaction because he hates the f40.
- 17:15He prefers.
- 17:15Really?
- 17:16How do you hate it?
- 17:17No, no, no, no.
- 17:18Okay.
- 17:18So in this scenario, I'm at 40 all day long between f50.
- 17:24I prefer the f50.
- 17:25Interesting.
- 17:26Okay.
- 17:26So if the question was expanded to Anyone else here would
- 17:29take the F 50 over the F 40?
- 17:31You're just in between the F 40 and the 959 though, you go F 40.
- 17:34Yeah.
- 17:34The F 40 is just a visceral experience.
- 17:37It's like the epitome of man and machine at its most simplest form.
- 17:41Yeah.
- 17:42Yeah.
- 17:42It's a race car straight up.
- 17:44Yeah.
- 17:44But so, but so is the F 50.
- 17:46Yeah.
- 17:46You see that carbon fiber weave, you know, it's, uh, yeah.
- 17:50The F 50, they literally took the F 1 motor and put it into a street car.
- 17:54I mean, that's a good point.
- 17:55Yeah.
- 17:56Yeah, but it's, that's not the argument we're having right now.
- 17:59It's bloated and it's soft and it just doesn't sing to me in the same way,
- 18:03you know, it's, it's the nineties.
- 18:06Eric's not a fan of the nineties bubble era.
- 18:08He's a fan of the marshmallows since we can take the nineties off the
- 18:14table as children of the eighties.
- 18:15If you could buy one car from the eighties.
- 18:18Alright, I'll go all in and say Vector.
- 18:21Ooh!
- 18:22Just for shits and grins, right?
- 18:24I mean, I'm sure it's a terrible thing to drive.
- 18:26I've never even seen one.
- 18:27Oh, I got to see one at Car Week in person.
- 18:29It's big.
- 18:30It's bigger than you think.
- 18:31Shout out to our friends at The Peterson, who just did
- 18:34something with Car Wow on YouTube.
- 18:36I think they drag raced, was it a Vector versus a first gen Viper?
- 18:40Shockingly, the Viper broke into the high 12s.
- 18:43The Vector was like, I Something like close to high thirteens or something.
- 18:46I think it all came down to that terrible three speed hydromatic GM
- 18:50transmission, the thing, but yeah, that's what I sort of fantasize about buying.
- 18:54Right.
- 18:54Because that was vaporware back when we were kids.
- 18:57Right.
- 18:57Yeah.
- 18:58But F40, man, there's just something about an F40.
- 19:01There's just something about an F40.
- 19:03Doug, what do you think?
- 19:03If money was no object, a car from the eighties.
- 19:06Yeah, F40 would be up there, but if any car is on the table, it's just as a
- 19:10promise to myself, it would be a Countach, and that's, that's just, that's just the,
- 19:15uh, six year old self not knowing that those things, not understanding, like,
- 19:18the concept of money and how much more expensive those were than other cars, and
- 19:21just being able to, like, you know, give that gift to myself now, but I say those
- 19:24two, but, you know, I kind of also want to say RS 200 too sometimes, but that's,
- 19:30and that's one I was kind of onto a little bit earlier, I think than some people,
- 19:33but like, that was also another one that it just also would be so fun to have.
- 19:36It's like, that's what hindsight now that would be fun to have.
- 19:38Now it would be so exotic.
- 19:40No one would know.
- 19:41Well, I shouldn't say that no one would see very often here in the United States.
- 19:44Could take that to Radwood and you would basically win Radwood if you, if you
- 19:48had one of those, but it's something of those things, but I didn't want
- 19:50to be boring and just say a 40 again.
- 19:52So that's probably really what I would buy.
- 19:53When did the F40 actually come out?
- 19:551987.
- 19:56Okay.
- 19:56Yeah.
- 19:56I just want to make sure that was actually an 80s car.
- 19:59Yeah, it's legit 80s.
- 20:00And based on even older tech, when you've really brought it back, but I
- 20:04think it's funny, some of the cars you pick and I too, I'm like, yeah, F40.
- 20:0740 is the pinnacle.
- 20:08And then, you know, there's a lot of really cool stuff in there.
- 20:11And then, you know, I'm a huge group B fan.
- 20:13So yes, any of those cars, whether it's the Audi S1, Evo two, or you're
- 20:17talking Lancia Deltas or even Renault R5 turbos, you know, something
- 20:20that I'm like, you know what?
- 20:22I had to have one car and that's the only car I get.
- 20:25And I have to just go all in CTR yellow bird.
- 20:28How can you go?
- 20:29All right.
- 20:29Yeah.
- 20:30All right.
- 20:30Good.
- 20:31Good choice.
- 20:32It's a good choice too.
- 20:33You're the fastest car on the, on the planet for a while there.
- 20:37So yeah, I think until McLaren or the EB 110 or Jaguar XJ 220, I think knocked it
- 20:44off officially, but yeah, there you go.
- 20:46You got that for a while though.
- 20:47Got the chance to meet Aloysia Roof.
- 20:49At the Peterson the last time I was there.
- 20:51And also Bruce Meyer, who we recorded with about a year ago.
- 20:54Now, of course, very famously has the first customer roof.
- 20:58Yellowbird.
- 20:59It's just a thing.
- 21:00It has a presence like some cars do, right?
- 21:02Doug talks often about the time.
- 21:04It was on the, it was a car and driver road and track.
- 21:07It was 87 world's fastest car issue.
- 21:10It features that yellowbird as well as a lot of just all the other sort of 80s.
- 21:14Greatest hits in a big city that I've been to.
- 21:16Did you guys ever see the video that Roof put out?
- 21:18It's called Roof Fascination.
- 21:20You can probably still find it on YouTube.
- 21:22It's the guy in the loafers.
- 21:23And he's going around the neighborhood.
- 21:24Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 21:25Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:26I've seen that, yeah, yeah.
- 21:27I didn't know it was called that.
- 21:28I've seen the video on, uh, on YouTube, I think.
- 21:30But yeah.
- 21:31Just absolutely just caning it right around the, around the ring.
- 21:34Yeah, it was a different kind of driving.
- 21:36Wasn't it like getting into a new GT three RS or something?
- 21:39That was a very different, that was a different animal.
- 21:41Well, I'll never forget when I first saw that video, we were at a Porsche
- 21:45club meeting here in the DC area.
- 21:47And one of the, I think it was either president or vice president of the
- 21:49club shows up with this VHS from roof.
- 21:52He's like, I got to show you guys something.
- 21:53You're never going to believe this.
- 21:55Puts it in tracking, you What are we looking at?
- 22:00And it opens with the yellow bird just sideways, just torching the tires.
- 22:05You're just like, what, what, you know, and I'm just like, my mind is exploding.
- 22:11Right.
- 22:14Something I don't think maybe like younger enthusiasts may not understand.
- 22:17Like it was so unusual to see a car like that in motion with sound and
- 22:22everything like that, but you didn't.
- 22:24Like you said, there was like this bootleg VHS tape that I had
- 22:27to go around for that to see.
- 22:28I remember seeing like a tiny clip of an F40 sort of like power sliding around a
- 22:32corner just in time, and it had to end out and it pulled it back in just in
- 22:35time before it hit the oncoming traffic.
- 22:37And I don't even know where that was from, but I mean, it was like 20 years
- 22:40until I, you know, started to see this stuff on the regular, you know, with Top
- 22:43Gear and now YouTube and everything else.
- 22:45We grew up.
- 22:45I know you guys have had John Davis on John, but motor week was the only
- 22:50sort of like automotive video content that we had access to growing up.
- 22:55First time I saw top gear blew my mind.
- 22:57You know, I can't imagine, you know, someone takes out this VHS thing.
- 23:01Like it's a snuff video or something in your head.
- 23:04Amazing.
- 23:04It's yeah.
- 23:05The other one was rendezvous.
- 23:07If you guys have ever seen that, I don't know.
- 23:09Yeah.
- 23:09It's the old black and white filmed in Paris and the middle of the morning.
- 23:14And there's all this speculation as to whether it's a Ferrari or a
- 23:17Mercedes and he's just rolling through all in one take and it ends with
- 23:22him parking at this park and then he meets his girlfriend or whatever.
- 23:25And then the movie just ends and it's like 12 minutes of just absolute chaos
- 23:30and glory and just, Oh, it's amazing.
- 23:32It's amazing.
- 23:32I didn't know that's what it was called, but yeah, you can find it.
- 23:35Yeah.
- 23:35It's brilliant.
- 23:36Yeah.
- 23:36It's absolutely brilliant.
- 23:36I used to have that on DVD.
- 23:38I don't know.
- 23:38I don't, we don't have a DVD player anymore, so I don't know.
- 23:40I think that I think I should still have the DVD, but I have no way of showing it.
- 23:43But yeah, that's an incredible, yeah.
- 23:4512 minutes of just pure adrenaline.
- 23:47Yeah, exactly.
- 23:48Car, just adrenaline.
- 23:49Yeah.
- 23:49It's all about the fantasy.
- 23:50Isn't it way before Ronan, you know?
- 23:52So we got that one more question to establish your car credibility
- 23:55before we start talking about the steering committee, the show,
- 23:59the ugliest car of all time.
- 24:02Think that I said at one time it was the Aztec, I went with the flow.
- 24:07I realize now it was way ahead of its time.
- 24:09I think the first version of the Jeep Renegade is up there for me.
- 24:12Hmm.
- 24:13Hideous, hideous creature.
- 24:15That's about as bad as it gets for me because there are cars
- 24:17that are ugly but are funky.
- 24:18Right?
- 24:19Like they're so bad.
- 24:19They're good.
- 24:20That was a car that was just terrible.
- 24:22I mean, it was, it was a car created for the low credit interest sort of set.
- 24:27We're talking about the, uh, the Aztec or the Renegade?
- 24:29No, the Renegade, the Jeep Renegade.
- 24:31That was just, it was, it wasn't a Jeep and it wasn't a Renegade.
- 24:34You know, I don't know my keeps as well.
- 24:35Are you talking about the one that had kind of like first one that
- 24:38had like square headlights and had those kinds of weird sort of like.
- 24:40Pieces of the trim on the bottom of it that were, no, maybe,
- 24:44maybe I have the name wrong.
- 24:45Sorry.
- 24:45So it was, it was the Liberty, but it was like the more street version.
- 24:48Was that not the renegade?
- 24:49What was that?
- 24:49No, that was the compass.
- 24:51Oh, the compass.
- 24:51Sorry.
- 24:52Okay.
- 24:53Renegade is basically the Fiat Panda.
- 24:54Yeah.
- 24:55Sorry.
- 24:55Sorry.
- 24:55Sorry.
- 24:56Sorry.
- 24:57The Jeep compass.
- 24:58I'm going to go on record now.
- 24:59The recent version that they do.
- 25:00Yeah.
- 25:01Yeah.
- 25:01Okay.
- 25:02Sorry.
- 25:02Although that renegade was damn funky too, right?
- 25:04Because it had the extra lights to Doug's point in the fenders.
- 25:07Yeah.
- 25:07No, that Jeep Compass is the ugliest car.
- 25:09I'm going to go on record.
- 25:10I know there's worse cars than this.
- 25:12I know it.
- 25:12I just can't think of them right now, but what's our catfish there,
- 25:15Ryan, that we talked about as well.
- 25:17Some of those newer Hyundai.
- 25:19Yeah.
- 25:19They look sort of like bottom feeders, right?
- 25:21Yeah.
- 25:22Ioniq 6.
- 25:23That's the one I'm thinking of.
- 25:23Yeah.
- 25:24Yeah.
- 25:24I'm thinking even like the Elantra.
- 25:26The current Elantra is just.
- 25:27And the Sonata of recent with those wispy eyes.
- 25:32Yeah.
- 25:32Real weird.
- 25:33Well, what's the sedan that's out now that almost is Porsche like from the side.
- 25:36It's very funky.
- 25:37It's very about, yeah, that's the ionic six.
- 25:39Okay.
- 25:39Yeah.
- 25:40It looks like a sob.
- 25:41That's what we keep saying.
- 25:41Yeah.
- 25:41Yeah.
- 25:42So I kind of hate it, but I kind of love it.
- 25:44Yeah.
- 25:44The Aztec has always been the go to answer followed by the multi plug.
- 25:48And there's a couple other cars.
- 25:50Yeah, but that's got character.
- 25:51That's got personality.
- 25:53There's a vehicle now that takes the cake and Brad has an allotment
- 25:56on one, and he is willing to trade it for a bucket of chicken.
- 25:59And what is that Brad?
- 26:02Oh, you mean the cyber truck?
- 26:04That is the new Aztec as far as I'm concerned.
- 26:07So you stepped up, you paid the a hundred dollars.
- 26:09You got the t shirt.
- 26:10What t shirt?
- 26:11Wait, there's a t shirt?
- 26:12I'm supposed to get a t shirt?
- 26:14I never got a t shirt.
- 26:14Goddammit Elon Musk, where is my t shirt?
- 26:20I paid 100 for a Cybertruck and all I got was no stupid t shirt.
- 26:24I'm writing this down because you're getting grief on the next drive thru.
- 26:27Brad should have got a t shirt.
- 26:30Yeah, you gotta read the fine print there.
- 26:31And then, uh, you know, then, but then there's, I'm sure there's a way
- 26:34that they backed out of that one.
- 26:35So getting the lot man, just to kind of for the story, or is that something
- 26:38you might you're interested in getting?
- 26:40Or it was never interested in getting it.
- 26:42I put in a hundred, I put in a hundred dollars day one.
- 26:45The plan was if the vehicle ever showed up, I was going to try and either buy
- 26:50it and flip it or sell my place in line.
- 26:54I was pretty high up and in line or whatever.
- 26:56At least I thought I was, but how's that played out for you?
- 26:59There's a whole episode coming out about this.
- 27:01I'm out a hundred dollars.
- 27:02That's how it's played out for me.
- 27:05Yeah.
- 27:05He's out.
- 27:05Whatever the equivalent of a hundred dollars is in doge coin.
- 27:09I just want to pull this out.
- 27:10Okay.
- 27:10Elon Musk gave me a hundred dollars worth of hopes and dreams.
- 27:15Hey, that's not nothing.
- 27:17Theoretically a year and a half from where we are right now, a year
- 27:19and a half ago, what would you have handicapped the chances of the truck
- 27:22actually overall just being produced?
- 27:24I would have said one in three, maybe.
- 27:25Like, I think I would have been skeptical.
- 27:27Yeah, I was a little surprised when we saw the first one.
- 27:30I never thought it was coming.
- 27:31I thought Tesla was going to fold before it showed up.
- 27:34But there's still hope for the Roadster.
- 27:36Don't forget, a thousand people put money down for that.
- 27:38So, you know.
- 27:40That's right.
- 27:41Never.
- 27:41I mean, never accept any of the dates that they propose, but yeah, it's like if
- 27:44we give them enough time, then yes, they will eventually produce a roadster, right?
- 27:47Like that's sort of the way that works.
- 27:49Who would have ever thought that first, was it called the roadster
- 27:51the first time around that Tesla, that Lotus Elise based thing?
- 27:55Lotus Elise, yeah.
- 27:56And now they're going for a hundred grand and bring a trailer.
- 27:58Like what is that?
- 28:00That's.
- 28:01Yeah, collector.
- 28:02I mean, what comes out first, the Tesla roadster or the new DeLorean?
- 28:06Oh, that's fighting words there, man.
- 28:12I know nothing about the funding behind a new DeLorean or anything like that.
- 28:15I don't even know if it exists, but I would actually potentially say it might
- 28:18come out ahead of the Tesla roadster, but I just don't have any faith in
- 28:21Tesla in terms of like meeting any goal that they set for themselves, so.
- 28:25Tell us about this new DeLorean because I've heard about new DeLoreans
- 28:28coming out now for a few years.
- 28:29There was some guy who said he was John DeLorean's illegitimate son.
- 28:33There's a couple different versions of the new DeLorean.
- 28:36You did some work with Kat DeLorean on the show last year or something.
- 28:40We did a mini series with Kat.
- 28:42That's John's only daughter.
- 28:43Okay.
- 28:44Basically, she's designing her own car and it's going to be a mid engine supercar.
- 28:48She actually got together with one of the designers that's at Rimac
- 28:52and Bugatti and did a tribute.
- 28:54To the original DMC 12.
- 28:55So we had him on and they're still working the bugs out, trying to figure
- 28:59out, you know, how they're going to develop the car, they want to build
- 29:01it here in the United States, actually back in Detroit, all that kind of stuff.
- 29:04At the same time, there's a bunch of guys that left Fisker and started
- 29:09what they called DeLorean re imagined, and they had a car that came out at.
- 29:12Car Week two years ago, which is actually based on the Jujaro inspired etal design
- 29:20DaVinci, which is a prototype, which has goal wings on sky like a thing.
- 29:24And then to make things muddier, Steve Wynn.
- 29:28Bought the DeLorean motor company.
- 29:30I didn't know that.
- 29:31Yeah.
- 29:31Steve Wynn is in the Vegas casino tycoon.
- 29:34He bought the DeLorean motor company, moved it to Humboldt, Texas, and
- 29:38they actually were talking about doing their own EV based on the
- 29:41old car and all this kind of stuff.
- 29:43Okay.
- 29:43There's three DeLoreans in the mix.
- 29:45I don't know which the tortoise or the hare that's going to come out.
- 29:48But wasn't there some weird three wheeler or something in the mix?
- 29:51So that was some guy in like the Eastern block claiming job.
- 29:56Yeah.
- 29:56Yeah.
- 29:57Is the group that's headed by John DeLorean's daughter.
- 30:00Is that planning to be an electric or an internal combustion engine?
- 30:04Runs off water, Doug.
- 30:05Like a hybrid.
- 30:06Okay.
- 30:06Yeah, no, not like a hybrid.
- 30:08Having two options, having a V8 power plant and then having an electric
- 30:12power plant, and then you get the option of either in the same chassis
- 30:15rather than two different cars.
- 30:17And so that's something that when we had Angel Guerrero on, he
- 30:20explained how he designed the car to accept different power plants.
- 30:23And so that way, if they wanted to run big block Chevy, they could, you know,
- 30:27or an LS, or if they wanted to run a Ford or even a German motor, like a
- 30:31Mercedes AMG, it would fit all of it.
- 30:33And then there was enough room, the way he kind of stacked the chassis
- 30:38that he could still center balance the batteries and the EV system.
- 30:42So it'd be rear wheel drive and all this kind of thing.
- 30:44So it's really well crafted from a theoretical perspective, but now
- 30:49it's How do we build this thing so we can do exactly what we said?
- 30:52That'd be an interesting design study.
- 30:54I mean, the shape and the way that an internal combustion engine works and the
- 30:58required drive train is really, that's a lot of what the sort of the hard
- 31:01points of the car have to be, you know?
- 31:02I mean, it's really dictated a lot by that.
- 31:04And to have something designed both ways, that sounds like an interesting challenge.
- 31:08And I think his experience at both Bugatti and at Rimac led him to that
- 31:12conclusion that he could do it because he had a hand in the designing.
- 31:15The Nivera and some of the other, not the Bugatti Devo, but one of the other ones
- 31:20that's of like a similar design and shape.
- 31:22And you kind of see his design language in those cars.
- 31:25And so he's taking from his own imagination, but his own experience
- 31:28developed something like that.
- 31:29So it's really cool.
- 31:30We don't know how it's going to pan out, but we'll see.
- 31:32Right.
- 31:32Yeah, that's exciting.
- 31:34Even though I just found out about all of these, I still have more faith in one of
- 31:37those companies getting to the finish line before, uh, well, when you don't play by
- 31:40the rules, you can do whatever you want.
- 31:42Pretty much.
- 31:43Well, plus the odds are in my favor.
- 31:44There's three entities going for it.
- 31:46So I think I have a better chance.
- 31:48All right.
- 31:48Well, Brad, why don't we switch gears?
- 31:50So let's talk about the steering committee and your podcast.
- 31:54And so what is the steering committee all about?
- 31:56Where'd you come up with the name for it?
- 31:58Like Doug said earlier, I think we were originally supposed to be called
- 32:00Bourbon and Backfires or something.
- 32:01I'm so glad we didn't go with that.
- 32:03The steering committee, I'm not even sure where that came up.
- 32:05It seemed clever at the time.
- 32:07We were texting back and forth about names and I threw something out there.
- 32:11It wasn't the steering committee, but Ryan thought that that's what
- 32:13I texted or said or something.
- 32:15That's, no, that's right.
- 32:15Yeah, I remember that now.
- 32:16Yeah, he said steering committee.
- 32:18So that's great.
- 32:18And I was like, oh, that is great.
- 32:20I didn't come up with that, but that is great.
- 32:22Honestly, we still bounced around a few ideas, but I don't think
- 32:24either of us came off of that one.
- 32:26Yeah, no, I think like a lot of things, it was just a happy accident.
- 32:29You know, I think we spent a lot of time starting out trying
- 32:32to be like other people, right?
- 32:33I mean, of course, you know, there's Matt Farah and the Smoking Tire
- 32:36and Zach and Spikes Car Radio.
- 32:38And I think from the get go, we knew we weren't going to be car reviewers.
- 32:41There are plenty of people doing car reviews.
- 32:43I think for us, it was always just sort of about the hang, right?
- 32:46Let's hang out.
- 32:46Let's talk cars, maybe smoke a cigar, have a little bourbon, you know, Denver's got a
- 32:51pretty wonderful, robust car scene, right?
- 32:54So we never have any lack of guests or people.
- 32:57I think once we stopped trying to be someone else is when we sort of found
- 33:00our voice and I think that's what we are.
- 33:03We're a hang, you know, we, we have listeners that.
- 33:05Reach out to us and say, Hey, I live in Peoria, Illinois.
- 33:08We don't have a car community in the same way that you guys do.
- 33:11So I like to go out in my garage on a Sunday, work on my car and
- 33:13listen to the steering committee and you're sort of like my car pals.
- 33:16Cause I don't have any car pals like that locally.
- 33:18And I think once we embrace that again, we sort of found our way.
- 33:21No, absolutely.
- 33:22I mean, when that listener wrote that to us and explained what he did, that
- 33:26was one of the nicest things anyone's ever said about it, just that you guys
- 33:28are my car friends, like I can put you on and listen, that's what we want.
- 33:31We want our guests to come on.
- 33:32We want them to relax.
- 33:34Many people don't have the chance to talk to other car
- 33:36people in their day to day life.
- 33:37So that if we can provide that for our guests and then for our wider audience,
- 33:41I think that's for me is what makes a really successful show, is just that great
- 33:43conversation that you get excited about.
- 33:45We'll never claim to be car experts.
- 33:47We have a tagline.
- 33:48I think we stole it from Bob Lutz, which is Tell them right, but never in doubt.
- 33:51That's our philosophies.
- 33:52Or credo.
- 33:54Yeah, you know, in all seriousness, it's not always about being right.
- 33:56It's just about being like really interested in cars and just wanting
- 33:59to talk about it and just having the conversation go further.
- 34:02I will never claim to be right about a lot of things, whatever metaphor you
- 34:05want to use, the campfire or just the hang or just the little club you get to
- 34:08come in and just sort of talk cars and really get it all out of your system.
- 34:11Doug and I both have day jobs.
- 34:12Doug's an attorney.
- 34:13I am like a creative manager, creative director at a big consulting company.
- 34:18You know, we don't get to scratch this itch, you know, nine to five.
- 34:21And so it's a great sort of counterbalance to that.
- 34:24I grew up wanting to be a car journalist again, car and driver.
- 34:27I got to meet Chubba Chetta here.
- 34:30You know, the name looks nothing like how it's spelled.
- 34:34Right.
- 34:34Yeah.
- 34:34You know, from car and driver, he lives here locally, you know, it was
- 34:37a, it was a dream for me to meet him, but I grew up wanting to be a car.
- 34:40Journalist.
- 34:41I knew I was never going to be an engineering major.
- 34:43I knew I was never going to be a journalism major.
- 34:45I mean, I barely scratched my way through art school.
- 34:47This is sort of that, that outlet.
- 34:49Finally, we get to do this.
- 34:50We get together once a week and talk cars.
- 34:52This has opened up so many doors for us.
- 34:53We've met people.
- 34:54I never would never dreamt that I would have met.
- 34:56Met great people, seen great things, you know, had an opportunity to participate
- 35:00in great events just as a result of this.
- 35:02So it's, it's been wonderful from that perspective.
- 35:04It's a little escape from like reality, right?
- 35:06Like just from the nine to five from the daily grind, right?
- 35:09Where we can just sit around.
- 35:11To my earlier point, I mean, we've had reoccurring guests.
- 35:13We have friends, we have friends of the show.
- 35:14And yeah, they look forward to it.
- 35:15They look forward to getting an invite back.
- 35:17They love to come back and hang out.
- 35:19You know, our audience, they get excited about a new episode.
- 35:21They get disappointed when one isn't released, for example.
- 35:24So, you know, we're just happy to provide that for them.
- 35:26And that's one of the probably more rewarding things about podcasting.
- 35:30It's not the reviews, not even the letters.
- 35:32Sometimes it's that.
- 35:33Dependency you've created where somebody is like, I want the
- 35:37next episode of the committee.
- 35:38I can't get enough of what you guys are doing and that's what motivates you.
- 35:42Right.
- 35:42And so I like your goals.
- 35:44Brad and I, we talk about our show all the time.
- 35:47He's quoted as saying what Brad who wants to listen to what we have to say.
- 35:50Exactly.
- 35:51Right.
- 35:51So we were sort of like never thinking about Matt Farah or the smoking
- 35:54tire Kameesa or any of those guys.
- 35:56But to your point, every once in a while you get something
- 35:58that slides across your desk.
- 35:59And somebody told us, you're like, you guys are like a cross
- 36:02between motor week and NPR.
- 36:03And I'm like, you know what?
- 36:04I'm going to take that to the bank.
- 36:06That's a good place to be.
- 36:08That's good.
- 36:09Yeah, yeah.
- 36:10What we actually thought was Car Talk had just come off the air.
- 36:13The older brother had just passed away.
- 36:14And we were like, there's a hole here in the space.
- 36:18Like, who's going to take over for them?
- 36:19Did they have anybody that was going to step up to the plate?
- 36:22Nobody can really replace Car Talk.
- 36:24But you're sort of like a void was created in the autosphere.
- 36:27And COVID also helped that it's like, let's sort of jump in there
- 36:30and try to fill that space if we can.
- 36:32I love what you guys are doing.
- 36:33I think it's fun.
- 36:34And I think you're adhering to the golden rule of any chat show,
- 36:38which is keeping it conversational.
- 36:39You're making people feel like they're there with you, sipping the bourbon and
- 36:43smoking the cigars and having a good time.
- 36:45So I commend you for it.
- 36:46Well, thanks.
- 36:47You know, everyone has a story, right?
- 36:49And they don't have to be a big name, a famous person to have the story.
- 36:51Sure.
- 36:52Bruce Meyer has got a great story, but so does Ted at our local shop,
- 36:55Axe and Allies, you know, He's one of our favorite guests because
- 36:59he's a wonderful storyteller.
- 37:00He knows everything about everything.
- 37:03He can tell you the difference between, you know, the 12 different kinds of
- 37:06wrenches he needs to use, you know, and the cars that come in his shop.
- 37:09I mean, that's gold, right?
- 37:11That's as good as anything.
- 37:12Right.
- 37:12And he's a guy just up the street.
- 37:13Through this podcast, through this medium, we've had a chance to
- 37:15really discover these people to us.
- 37:17I mean, just, you know, meet them and then introduce them to our audience.
- 37:20And that's always, what's fun.
- 37:21I think we're also just lucky that we also have all these other great shows
- 37:25to listen to yours show included.
- 37:27But we have like just this wealth of just great stuff that I would have
- 37:29killed to have when I was younger.
- 37:31You had to kind of wait that 30 days till the new magazine
- 37:33came out or something like that.
- 37:34Or, you know, motor week.
- 37:35If you have that, if you're lucky, even though Massachusetts,
- 37:38I actually never listened to click and clack car talk at all.
- 37:41Yeah.
- 37:42And they were based on a WBUR.
- 37:43I'm familiar with it.
- 37:44I've listened to enough to know who the two guys are and recognize them when
- 37:47they were in the cars movies, but I've never really listened to that show.
- 37:50Maybe that was a missed opportunity on my part.
- 37:52To that point where we have like a spoil of like automotive riches these days.
- 37:56It just shocks me every time that anyone listens to us.
- 37:59Yeah.
- 37:59I'm always tickled when we see.
- 38:00We talked on this last show about apparently have a following
- 38:03in Andorra of all places.
- 38:05Doug didn't even know that was a country.
- 38:06I hardly knew it was a country.
- 38:08Right.
- 38:08But like, here we are, there are people in Andorra listening to our show.
- 38:12Like, and it's amazing.
- 38:13We were number one in Senegal this week.
- 38:15That's no kidding.
- 38:16Number one.
- 38:16Wow.
- 38:20That's awesome.
- 38:20They go right up on the wall as a trophy.
- 38:22Yeah.
- 38:23Makes you feel good.
- 38:24You know, yeah.
- 38:25There's a deep and rich Volkswagen car culture in Senegal, apparently.
- 38:28I bet, yeah.
- 38:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:31So why don't you guys talk about some of the lessons you've learned
- 38:34while doing the Steering Committee?
- 38:36If you want something, ask.
- 38:37And that's just a good life lesson too.
- 38:39You got to get past that fear of being said no to.
- 38:41And honest to God, like, I mean, it doesn't even happen that often.
- 38:44I, there's, I think the one interview or the one guest that we wanted that
- 38:48hasn't worked out is Paul Zuckerman.
- 38:50And it's not that he turned us down.
- 38:52It's that.
- 38:52One question turned into 20 questions, right?
- 38:54I mean, he's the defense attorney, right?
- 38:57Gave you a direct examination, as we say.
- 38:58You're like, wait, who's interviewing who here, right?
- 39:01Yeah.
- 39:01Yeah.
- 39:01It was very quickly that, and we'll get him yet.
- 39:04We'll have you on yet, Zuckerman.
- 39:06But you know, I mean, people are generally really receptive.
- 39:10You know, you've got to build up a little bit of a foundation, right?
- 39:13I mean, you can't go out, show one and expect, you know, Mr.
- 39:15X to be on.
- 39:16But, you know, after you've got a few shows in the hand,
- 39:18people want to talk, right?
- 39:20People want to, I think that's my biggest takeaway.
- 39:23If you want something, ask.
- 39:24And people in the car world are generally very nice, very accommodating.
- 39:29God, when we got plugged in with our pal, Tom Horan and the Colorado grand, I
- 39:33mean, that was a real game changer for us because we just met so many people from
- 39:36that never in a million years did we think we'd be involved with a group like that.
- 39:39If you want something to ask, if someone says no, you get over.
- 39:42Was there a guest who surprised you?
- 39:45Like something happened.
- 39:46You were like, wow, I didn't know that.
- 39:47Or you gotta be kidding me.
- 39:48You know, like one of those moments where you're just taken aback.
- 39:52I'm going to mention Bruce Meyer again, only because he told us his origin story,
- 39:57which was that he had this candle shop.
- 39:59In Beverly Hills, which turned into a candle warehouse, we're
- 40:02reading between the lines.
- 40:03I think it was probably a head shop, right?
- 40:05Like it was the sixties.
- 40:06He was a surfer.
- 40:06He was like this cool guy or whatever.
- 40:08So he was someone who surprised me and he, he surprised me as well.
- 40:11And that he was just so kind.
- 40:13So accommodating one hour turned into four or five hours.
- 40:16I think we put him up on this pedestal and it's sort of this, you know, this
- 40:19celeb and, and when we got there, he just couldn't have been nicer.
- 40:21So he surprised us in the best way, but Doug, maybe you have another great
- 40:25example, but my other example I was thinking of was we have a friend who asked
- 40:28us to basically interview his father.
- 40:31So this is the Willeth Woods senior episode in his youth.
- 40:34He'd spent a summer as a photographer on the formula one circuit, sort of
- 40:37in the height of the seventies there.
- 40:38And that sort of time period.
- 40:40And you know, because his father's getting up there in age and he really wanted to
- 40:43have this nice, uh, Sort of thing that he could get some of the memories out there
- 40:46into an audio format, where maybe they could be shared with other people before.
- 40:49Maybe he couldn't do that himself.
- 40:50We were happy to oblige.
- 40:52We were very excited about it, but man, I mean, not just the formula one stores,
- 40:55but he just sat back and just gave us all of these incredible stories, just
- 40:59these interesting experiences, you know, from, uh, you know, how many cattle it
- 41:02takes to buy a Porsche to, you know, like being in a sleazy motel and, uh,
- 41:07you Here in Denver and having to shoot roaches off the wall with his six shooter.
- 41:10And you know, that kind of thing, like just in no idea where the stories
- 41:13were going, but they were all amazing.
- 41:14And we just had the, we had the best time with that, I think, with that show.
- 41:17And the best part about that, the surprise really was, so
- 41:19Willis is actually a sponsor.
- 41:21He owns a company here in Denver called Rhino Signworks.
- 41:24They do signage for like the coolest places, including here, did ours.
- 41:27Right above you there.
- 41:28He didn't know that his dad had had this chapter in his life.
- 41:32He was going through some old stuff and found these old photos and he never knew
- 41:35that his dad had been an F1 photographer for a year or two back in the 70s.
- 41:40Had all these wild stories.
- 41:41You never know who you're talking to.
- 41:43Exactly.
- 41:43True.
- 41:44That was a great episode and a great surprise, so.
- 41:46Eric's got a story similar to that where it's the apple car, because everybody was
- 41:50telling you, you got to talk to this guy.
- 41:51Uh, who was it?
- 41:52It was Bob Garrison.
- 41:53Bob Garrison.
- 41:54Yeah.
- 41:54And now we're opening the kimono here a little bit.
- 41:58Nobody gave us any information ahead of time.
- 42:01All we knew was that he was a racer like back in the seventies and a friend of
- 42:05ours, who's in the GTM clubhouse, Sky Allen is like, you got to interview Bob.
- 42:09You got to interview Bob.
- 42:10He's like, you know, 90 some years old.
- 42:11You got to interview him.
- 42:12Bye bye.
- 42:12And we're like, okay, who's Bob?
- 42:13You know?
- 42:14What about Bob?
- 42:15I felt like Richard Dreyfuss the whole time.
- 42:16I'm like, I don't care.
- 42:18So I'm like calling up people I know and museums and stuff.
- 42:21Like, who is this guy?
- 42:22Like I'm, I'm reaching into the archives, trying to find his racing records.
- 42:26And it's not a whole lot of information.
- 42:28One of our co hosts who drops in for these types of episodes,
- 42:31Mike Carr, he's like a guru.
- 42:33Like he grew up with Al Holbert and he followed them around
- 42:36and all this kind of stuff.
- 42:37And so he knew Randy Lanier and he's been fabulous.
- 42:39Even Mike was like, I don't know who this guy is.
- 42:42So as he's talking, he's on the phone.
- 42:44He can't see us.
- 42:45If you watch the behind the scenes, it's hilarious.
- 42:47Cause we're like, I don't know where to take this.
- 42:49You know, and he just keeps talking and telling stories and we're sort
- 42:51of pulling and we're hearing names like Ray Hall and blah, blah, blah.
- 42:56And then he starts talking about Wozniak and I'm like, Continues to digress.
- 43:01And I asked this question all of a sudden about, tell me
- 43:04about Gerritsen enterprises.
- 43:05Cause I found that little piece of information.
- 43:07He goes, Oh yeah, blah, blah, blah.
- 43:09And he used to service so and so's cars.
- 43:10And the marketing guy from Apple came over and then, you know, Steve
- 43:13Jobs brought over his piece of junk.
- 43:15And one day I was sitting down and I said, you know, I got to get your name
- 43:17on the side of one of my cars and Mike's.
- 43:19Head exploded and we're texting each other.
- 43:22Like, do you know who this is?
- 43:23I know who this is now.
- 43:24Like we figured it out.
- 43:26So it was unbelievable because he's like the best kept secret in racing.
- 43:30And he won the championship that year.
- 43:32And he's the guy that owned the apple nine 35.
- 43:35And so he tells the story and it's hilarious.
- 43:38Like I go to car week or I go to petite Lamonts and I see all
- 43:41these cars with the apple computer livery on it from the nine 35.
- 43:45And I'm like, do you know the story?
- 43:47And they're like, nah, man, I just think it's cool.
- 43:48And I'm like, yeah, the story is amazing.
- 43:51And here's where you can download it.
- 43:52Right.
- 43:52That is so cool.
- 43:54Yeah.
- 43:54You never know who you're talking with, you know, and who might show
- 43:57up or who you might refer to, you know, we got to be friends with a
- 44:00guy by the name of William Taylor.
- 44:02And William Taylor was just a guy who lived in Denver.
- 44:05He ran something called the auto archives, which was this automotive library.
- 44:09Well, come to find out William has this long and storied history.
- 44:12It is currently.
- 44:14He runs a classic team Lotus back in the UK.
- 44:18It's the guy that was just here in Littleton, Colorado.
- 44:20He walked in the first time, Doug, and he's got all these signs, you
- 44:23know, helmets from all the greats, you know, personal stories, but everyone,
- 44:26he knew everyone in formula one.
- 44:28I mean, we saw the collection, but we just figured he was kind of a
- 44:31fan and he had this library, but no, he had worked on several books.
- 44:34He had interviewed pretty much every world championship.
- 44:37Formula one driver that raced for McLaren and for some other teams, he
- 44:40put together these beautiful books.
- 44:42I mean, the list of people that he was on a first name basis with was stunning.
- 44:46Phil Hill to James Garner, all the way up to Emerson Fittipaldi, Bruce McLaren,
- 44:51and later on, like the head of the McLaren racing now or head of McLaren.
- 44:54Now.
- 44:55So, I mean, he knew all these people, he had them all in his contacts,
- 44:57you know, he was in our backyard.
- 44:59We call that the golden Rolodex.
- 45:01Yeah, exactly.
- 45:02No, I mean, he's like, Oh yeah.
- 45:03And he had a great story on any of them.
- 45:05And if we ping pong into any of these guys in our conversation,
- 45:08he would have something.
- 45:09Again, Ryan, this is making me think too, when we had that Porsche draft
- 45:12episode way back when, just sort of a brain fart of an idea I came up with.
- 45:17And we had the last second, had a guest drop out, just kind
- 45:19of unexpectedly ghosted us.
- 45:21We pulled in a, who are now I consider a good friend, Justin Underwood
- 45:24at Porsche of Colorado Springs.
- 45:25I mean, we were talking about Porsche's drafting on these fantasy cars.
- 45:29We've never driven them, but he had a story for every single one.
- 45:32He could come in there and just give us color commentary.
- 45:34Just like he was, you know, like an ex quarterback in a football game.
- 45:36Like, yeah, let me tell you about the clutch on that.
- 45:38Let me tell you about how the startup procedure goes on that.
- 45:41Cars that were, you know, fantasy cars for us.
- 45:43And he's become a good friend.
- 45:44He runs, yeah, the classic center down at Porsche Colorado Springs.
- 45:47Shout out to him and John Deisty who do the first dibs podcast down there.
- 45:51Good, happy accidents.
- 45:52And, you know, you talked about things you've learned and another thing, not
- 45:55only do you need to ask what you need to put yourself in these situations, right?
- 45:59I mean, it's all wonderful to throw darts, but I mean, if you aim the darts, right?
- 46:02Like it, you know, things generally come out in your favor.
- 46:05So you guys have already mentioned a couple episodes that, you know, stick out
- 46:09in your minds, but I'm a new listener.
- 46:11Coming to the steering committee for the first time, where do you point me to?
- 46:15What are some top hits?
- 46:16Or do you have a best of playlist of episodes that are, are your
- 46:19favorites or that are fan friendly?
- 46:21You do a good way to gateway into becoming a steering committee fan.
- 46:24And we all apologize for our first season, right?
- 46:27I mean, that's just, I'm sorry.
- 46:31I'm sorry.
- 46:31In episode one.
- 46:32Oh my God.
- 46:33Yeah.
- 46:33That cringe is my 11 year old daughter would say.
- 46:36Yeah.
- 46:37I feel like Apple did something recently where they like change the order.
- 46:40If you don't default it to, and it's just, I can't think of, you know, who
- 46:43might be listening to that early stuff.
- 46:45But Doug, I think you probably would agree.
- 46:46Bruce Meyer's a great place to start.
- 46:48Terry Kargis, the executive director at the Peterson museum
- 46:51is one that I'm very proud of.
- 46:52Yeah, absolutely.
- 46:53Mike Koons, who's not done a lot of podcasts and media.
- 46:56He's the gentleman who runs the Mercedes Benz Classic Center
- 47:00in Long Beach, California.
- 47:01That's another one.
- 47:02I think the ones we did at the Colorado grand where it
- 47:05was bourbon and cigar night.
- 47:07So we've got all these participants and you get everyone in the Colorado grand.
- 47:10That was a rare reappearance of the original band.
- 47:12Again, we brought that out for that show, the bourbons and backfire.
- 47:16Yeah.
- 47:16Yeah.
- 47:17I mean, to talk to people, you know, whose names, you know,
- 47:19having a great time at the grand.
- 47:21So for example, this year, I mean, even to make it easier, we put together
- 47:24around the holidays when things get a little tight with recording schedule,
- 47:26we did put together bundles of.
- 47:28What we think are some of our best episodes kind of is one
- 47:31big long episode to listen to.
- 47:33We're thinking along road trip lines, cause that's what a lot of people will be
- 47:35doing around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
- 47:37Those are good ones to check out.
- 47:38And I think those include many of the episodes we're talking about is we
- 47:41didn't put Ted Axe in there, right?
- 47:43Cause we hadn't recorded that one yet, but that's another one.
- 47:46Anything with Ted Axe, he is just a fun hang to listen to that.
- 47:49That's some of our best representation of just sort of the way we can be
- 47:52kind of a casual, funny sort of hang.
- 47:54Well, I'm going to start listening to all those then.
- 47:56After I get through your first season.
- 48:01You can listen to the first season if you want.
- 48:03So we did pick out one.
- 48:04We did it about a year ago where we went back and re listened to our
- 48:07first episode and then basically gave like audio commentary over it.
- 48:10Mystery Science Theater 2000s.
- 48:13Oh my God, Eric, we gotta do that.
- 48:15Yeah, we should.
- 48:16That's how we'll celebrate 300, I guess.
- 48:19You guys have 300 episodes.
- 48:20Oh yeah.
- 48:21That's impressive guys.
- 48:22Yeah.
- 48:22Where are you guys at?
- 48:23177 I think is where we are now.
- 48:26Yeah.
- 48:26Early on.
- 48:27It was kind of like whenever we felt like it, then it became weekly
- 48:30and going back to when you asked about like, what have we learned?
- 48:32I mean, you know, I think you guys know this with podcasts.
- 48:34It has to be part of a habit.
- 48:35It's best to do it.
- 48:36On a regular schedule and have it upload on the same day.
- 48:38You don't want it, you know, popping up all over the place.
- 48:40You're not always in the mood.
- 48:42Yeah, no, it's true.
- 48:42What do you guys do when you're not in the mood, right?
- 48:44Like, I mean, you know, it's just, you just The secret is called a backlog.
- 48:48Yeah, see, and you guys are good.
- 48:50Yeah, yeah.
- 48:50Good for that, yeah.
- 48:51Well, we're from Colorado.
- 48:52We're much like South Park.
- 48:54We're putting this together every week, you know, like on the fly.
- 48:57I don't know if people understand that reference, but yeah, those
- 48:59guys like Put that show together every single week live, basically.
- 49:02Eric, who's a huge fan of history.
- 49:04I mean, he really gets into all this.
- 49:06I mean, this is right in his wheelhouse, you know, and just hearing all these
- 49:09stories and going back in time and just listening to everybody, it's
- 49:13not work for him, you know, to be able to do this, the labor of love.
- 49:17That's why it's so easy for him.
- 49:19Yeah.
- 49:20I can't say I'm super pumped every single week, but I would say almost every week
- 49:23though, I don't have many days where I don't want to sit down and talk cars.
- 49:26So that does make it easier.
- 49:28Cause I know that was another question people asked me right off the bat.
- 49:30When I started telling him about this podcast, I was like,
- 49:32well, what do you talk about?
- 49:33How do you come up with stuff to talk about?
- 49:34And I'm like.
- 49:35I don't know how to answer that question.
- 49:36I just always, I always have something to talk about.
- 49:38I don't know.
- 49:39I'm just always willing to go into something.
- 49:41I'm always willing to learn something, listen to someone, or
- 49:43just put my own two cents out there.
- 49:44Well, we know that the job of a podcaster is never over.
- 49:48And Eric likes to talk about the Mount Rushmore of guests.
- 49:52Mount Everest, Mount Everest.
- 49:53Yes.
- 49:54The Mount Everest of guests that we're trying to reach the top of that summit.
- 49:57But for you guys, what are some bucket list guests or what's your Mount Everest
- 50:01of guests that you're trying to get to?
- 50:03That's a great question, because I feel like so many of our best shows have been
- 50:07with like regular people and so many of the big names you've heard them before.
- 50:11What about you Doug?
- 50:12Do you have, is there someone who.
- 50:13Yeah, there's one off the top of the head that I could think of.
- 50:15That'd be great for us.
- 50:16Cause I think it would be a good conversation and I also think it
- 50:19would be great promotion for us.
- 50:20Jack Shepard.
- 50:21He is a huge podcaster and he is a huge bonafide car guy.
- 50:25He's got the chops for that.
- 50:27And I think it would be funny.
- 50:28I think it'd be a fun guest to have on the shows.
- 50:29I actually saw one of his shows live here in Denver when they came out here.
- 50:32Armchair expert, I think is the name of his show.
- 50:34It's a big one.
- 50:35So yeah, that would be one.
- 50:36I'd love to chat with him.
- 50:37I always thought he was funny.
- 50:38I thought, I think he's a cool guy.
- 50:39I think it would be fun to hang out with.
- 50:40So that's up there for me.
- 50:42I think for me, and I mentioned Chabacheta before a long time, you
- 50:45know, editor in chief of car and driver.
- 50:47He's someone who I met locally.
- 50:48He's kind of my white whale because he's a PCA guy.
- 50:51He's very involved.
- 50:52I reached out to him.
- 50:53I didn't hear back.
- 50:54I'm not quite sure if maybe he didn't get the message.
- 50:56I would love to have him on because I think he was at the helm.
- 51:00I think in my eyes, the best period in time for car and driver.
- 51:03And he also very famously was one who introduced a redesign.
- 51:08Being a graphic designer.
- 51:09And this was a redesign that really fell flat and he stuck with it.
- 51:13And I have a million questions for him.
- 51:16He's, I think a principled guy.
- 51:18I think he had some of the best writers were under him when he
- 51:21was entered and he's a local, so he's like, he's right there, but
- 51:23haven't quite made that happen yet.
- 51:25So Chabacheta, if you're listening.
- 51:27I'll dab you on the steering committee sometime.
- 51:29You gotta speak it to manifest it, you know?
- 51:31You gotta put it out there.
- 51:31That's right.
- 51:32He's listening in Senegal.
- 51:33Yeah.
- 51:35Maybe he knows someone in Senegal, yeah.
- 51:36We'll get the word out to him.
- 51:38Not Chubba necessarily, but so many of these guys, they're getting up in years.
- 51:42We need to have them on.
- 51:43We need to get their stories down.
- 51:45That can be around forever, right?
- 51:47None of us will, right?
- 51:47True.
- 51:49to one of Brad's.
- 51:51I'm curious.
- 51:51Yeah.
- 51:52Who is this for you guys?
- 51:53So on Brad's side of Mount Everest, right?
- 51:55So there's two sides to the peak.
- 51:56Obviously we got really, really close to heartthrob played McDreamy on television.
- 52:02We're talking Patrick Dempsey.
- 52:05He'd be a great guest.
- 52:07Patrick's a pal of one of our friends, JJ Collier.
- 52:09That's another great episode.
- 52:11You should check out.
- 52:11He's actually been on a couple of times.
- 52:13If this really is your, I don't know, your white whale, let us know.
- 52:16Maybe we can try to connect you.
- 52:18Yes, I think so.
- 52:18Yeah, for sure.
- 52:19He wants to talk to McDreamy.
- 52:21That might be the one episode my wife listens to.
- 52:26That makes me feel better.
- 52:26Cause I don't think my wife has listened to one of our episodes.
- 52:29It's just not in her wheelhouse.
- 52:30Doug, what about Kathleen?
- 52:32Avid listener.
- 52:34He's a big consumer podcast in general.
- 52:36She's not into cars, but my daughter listens more than my wife.
- 52:39Yeah.
- 52:39Yeah.
- 52:39Oh, that's cool.
- 52:40That's actually even cooler, honestly.
- 52:41So it's harder to get your kids to think what you're doing.
- 52:44How old is she?
- 52:4510.
- 52:46Perfect.
- 52:46Yeah.
- 52:47Yeah.
- 52:47I joke all the time.
- 52:48She's got a crush on Andy Lee from flying lizard.
- 52:51Like she's into the racing.
- 52:52I took her to Watkins Glen.
- 52:53She was all of a sudden, she's like, dad, we got to go to road America.
- 52:56I took her to last year.
- 52:58She wanted to go to Lamont's with me last year for the hundredth.
- 53:01But I was like, honey, it's like a week long.
- 53:03You're not going to be able to do it.
- 53:04You know, whatever.
- 53:05So we took her to petite jokingly saying, well, you're small and
- 53:07it's the small Lamont's right.
- 53:09But she, she loved it.
- 53:11It was a lot of fun.
- 53:12And even this year, she's like, dad, what race are we going to?
- 53:14She's hoping that flying lizard is going to be there with the
- 53:16Lamborghini and all that kind of stuff.
- 53:18So, and even at petite, she was all excited thinking the iron dames car was.
- 53:24Andy's Lamborghini and it was like, no, no, honey, that's the all girl team.
- 53:27And then she's like, Oh my God, she'll sneak down and like Rolex.
- 53:33She'll come and watch the race with me and stuff like that.
- 53:35That's cool.
- 53:35That's amazing.
- 53:36Well done.
- 53:37Good parenting.
- 53:38So I have an 11 year old and she's not into racing yet, but I took
- 53:41her to Denver racing sim here.
- 53:43Oh, nice.
- 53:43They've got this 120, 000 simulator, full motion and all this.
- 53:47And I couldn't peel her off the thing.
- 53:49There's hope yet.
- 53:50Excellent.
- 53:51Well done.
- 53:51So the other two, we joked, there's a couple of them that are, fortunately
- 53:55they've left us, so we'll never be able to interview them, but, you know,
- 53:57maybe unless it's archive footage.
- 53:59But the other two, at least for me, and it's a little bit of, probably
- 54:03more difficult than getting Dempsey, is going to be Jujaro, the designer.
- 54:07Oh, yeah.
- 54:08And Shkel Mouton, the queen of WRC.
- 54:10Right on.
- 54:11But for us, we've always approached it just like Mount Everest.
- 54:13You can never go straight to the top, you know, even if you have technology
- 54:17to help you get there, you know, money, resources, you've gotta go
- 54:20from base camp and work your way up.
- 54:22Yeah.
- 54:22Yeah.
- 54:22So it's a little bit of a Kevin Bacon game to make that happen.
- 54:25Step over a few dead bodies along the way.
- 54:28Right.
- 54:28A hundred percent.
- 54:29Those are the other podcasts that aren't on the air.
- 54:30That's right.
- 54:31That's right.
- 54:32Which is most of them.
- 54:33Right.
- 54:34So just the fact that you've done 300 episodes that we've done 177, I mean.
- 54:38That's something right there, right?
- 54:39Yeah.
- 54:39It's a good analogy too.
- 54:40Cause I think even people who are very good at mountain climbing and who are well
- 54:43funded and well resources, I mean, they sometimes don't make it up at first, but
- 54:47you try again, you keep going and it'll be that much sweeter when you get up there.
- 54:50So I like that analogy.
- 54:52I just finished reading into thin air.
- 54:53So I'm all up on a Mount Everest trivia right now.
- 54:56And I'm glad we're talking about the mountains because it's now time that
- 54:59we drop it into fourth gear and talk about the Rocky Mountain car culture.
- 55:04And I'm really fascinated by this because I used to work for a company
- 55:07that was based out of Boulder, so I would fly in and out all the time.
- 55:10And so like you were saying about the guy in Peoria, Illinois, kind
- 55:13of going, you know, I didn't know there was car culture in Denver.
- 55:15We're used to the left coast, which is big into car shows and the museum.
- 55:19And here I'd like to say on the East Coast, it's very
- 55:24much grounded in motorsport.
- 55:25We've got more tracks than you can shake a stick at legacy tracks.
- 55:30Exactly.
- 55:31Built on natural terrain and things like that.
- 55:33Just these classic venues, Rhode, Atlanta, Watkins, Glenn, BIR, Lime
- 55:37Rock, and so on down the line.
- 55:39But when you think about car culture, you don't just go to Denver.
- 55:41I mean, for me as a racer, you got High Plains and Pikes Beach.
- 55:44Right.
- 55:44Right.
- 55:44You gotta go to cars.
- 55:46You gotta go to cars.
- 55:48It's funny because I, one of the reasons I moved to Colorado is for the roads.
- 55:51And I think that's the differentiator here.
- 55:53You know, back in Chicago, there was a lot of money.
- 55:55People had wonderful cars, but we didn't have wonderful roads.
- 55:58You would have to take those cars two or three hours away to Southwest Wisconsin.
- 56:02They call it the driftless zone where the glaciers didn't scrape and you
- 56:05actually had hills and great roads.
- 56:07I think that's the difference here.
- 56:08People in Colorado and Doug, maybe you can fervently deny this, but
- 56:11I think people here are drivers.
- 56:12I think that's the difference.
- 56:14It's All about the drive.
- 56:15We have these wonderful roads.
- 56:17We don't have a full season like, you know, people in Southern
- 56:19California do, but our roads are as good as anything in the world.
- 56:22I truly believe that, you know, we have roads 30 minutes outside
- 56:25of town here that are amazing.
- 56:27So people here drive, they drive their cars.
- 56:29We have a pal Dan McGinnis, very famously has 70 some thousand miles on his.
- 56:352022 Porsche Spyder.
- 56:37I think that's what makes it unique.
- 56:39And you know, you, you worked out of here.
- 56:40There is a quite a bit of money here.
- 56:42There is a car scene through Pike's Peak.
- 56:44I think that's brought a lot of people here.
- 56:46We have a wonderful Porsche dealership in Porsche, Colorado Springs.
- 56:49So we get all the good cars here.
- 56:51Right.
- 56:51We're big enough where we have a Ferrari dealership, you know, I
- 56:54mean, we, you can buy the cars.
- 56:56I think for a city at size, there's a real outsized car community.
- 57:01And to me, I think it comes down to the roads.
- 57:03We just have wonderful roads and, and people drive them.
- 57:05What's the ratio of Subarus to Porsches these days?
- 57:09Is it 10 to one still?
- 57:11I was gonna say Jeeps, my kids, we all have a game about, you know, you
- 57:14pick one of these car brands and you, whoever hits the most by the time we
- 57:17get to the ski mountain wins and yeah, I would say Subaru and and Toyota.
- 57:20You just do Toyota Four Runner.
- 57:22You don't even have to do the whole brand.
- 57:23Just four runner . That's gonna be your big winner there.
- 57:25Yeah.
- 57:26State car, Colorado, I think.
- 57:27Yeah, that's, yeah.
- 57:29Is that like the punch buggy game?
- 57:30Does somebody get hurt at the end of this or?
- 57:32Yeah, they haven't turned it into that yet.
- 57:34They will at some point, but, uh, no, right now it's just counting it off,
- 57:37but yeah, I mean, I'm not convinced that there's not a, a non TRD pro version
- 57:40of the 4Runner, that's all we see out here is, yeah, but a lot of Subarus,
- 57:44I've had a few Subarus in my lifetime.
- 57:46And in fact, I think I've done a disservice to my girls.
- 57:48Cause I did WRX 2014 and then I had a 2004 legacy GT manual station wagon.
- 57:54You know, my girls, they assume that Subaru is on the same footing as
- 57:57a Porsche or a Lotus or a Ferrari.
- 58:00I hate to break it to them that they're, you know, there's such a
- 58:01pedestrian company in so many ways.
- 58:03That's what they think is the fastest car you should get.
- 58:05So Ryan, you talked about the long driving season in the Rocky
- 58:08Mountain area and all that.
- 58:10So I got to ask, and this comes straight out of your show, how many
- 58:12miles you put on the Porsche this year?
- 58:16Well, yeah, the GT4 gets about 3000 miles a year.
- 58:20But I will say this.
- 58:21I'm a busy guy.
- 58:22And when I get in that car, I want to make those miles count.
- 58:25It's not a car that I'm going to take to the grocery store, right?
- 58:27It's a car that I'm going to, you know, put two or 300 miles on in a drive.
- 58:31Plus, you know, I'm not a wealthy guy.
- 58:32I've got to pay attention to these things, right?
- 58:34I do have to pay attention to resale, right?
- 58:37Got to make every mile count, right?
- 58:38So we're at about, uh, 8, 900 miles and it is a 20, about 3000 miles a year.
- 58:43I wish it were more, like I said, every, every one of
- 58:46those miles has been memorable.
- 58:47It's been rallies.
- 58:48It's been wonderful drives with friends on weekends, but that was part of the
- 58:52equation when I bought the damn thing.
- 58:53Right?
- 58:54Like, I mean, it was a stretch admittedly for me to buy a car like that.
- 58:57And so I kind of had to go in with a plan and as long as I'm not underwater.
- 59:01Right.
- 59:02Come out on top, especially in today's used car market though.
- 59:05Right.
- 59:06So on the motorsport side of things, like I said, sort of jokingly, you
- 59:09know, in your area, you have high plains racetrack and then Pikes peak.
- 59:13So have either of you done any track time?
- 59:16Have you gone to any of the races?
- 59:18Or been to Pikes Peak . Yeah, we were there together with Brian.
- 59:20Probably has a unique experience with that, uh, actually being there.
- 59:23But yeah, that was the day I came down with Covid.
- 59:26So I spent most of the day in Doug's truck.
- 59:28I went last year and, uh, for practice.
- 59:31It was the one day in the history of Pikes Peak that the thing was rained out.
- 59:34So I'm hoping third time's the charm.
- 59:36Uh, and we'll make it back again this year.
- 59:38You know, I've driven a couple of local tracks.
- 59:41I'm not a track rat.
- 59:42I just, I don't know.
- 59:43It's, the roads are so good here.
- 59:45I don't have a need for the tracks like I did when I lived in Chicago
- 59:49and we do Ginger Man or Autobahn.
- 59:51Not that I wouldn't love to.
- 59:52Doug's more the motorsport guy between the two of us.
- 59:55I'm more the canyon rat, I guess.
- 59:57Yeah, and I haven't done, I actually don't think I've literally ever done it.
- 1:00:01I've been to more races over my years.
- 1:00:03I, in my youth, I was really into IndyCar, Formula One.
- 1:00:07I've gotten away with it.
- 1:00:08I've kind of dipped back in and in, in and out at times.
- 1:00:10Back in Massachusetts, we used to have an IndyCar race up in Loudon,
- 1:00:13New Hampshire, just right up to the next state up, which is not very far.
- 1:00:16So I used to go to the IndyCar races.
- 1:00:17There, and then, uh, I went to the formula one race up in Montreal a number of times
- 1:00:21when I was in high school and college, uh, with my dad and all his friends.
- 1:00:24And we, we had a little tradition, a little group, a little reunion every
- 1:00:27year up there at the circuit there.
- 1:00:29And I've never done any track days.
- 1:00:30I've never done a lot of even carting or anything like that.
- 1:00:33So I haven't even made it over to Denver racing simulator yet.
- 1:00:36So we got to get that changed.
- 1:00:37Hey, we've got to give Doug a break because he's got three young girls.
- 1:00:40Yeah, it's tough.
- 1:00:41Eats up a lot of the, uh, free time as well as also the disposable income.
- 1:00:44For sure.
- 1:00:45So you guys.
- 1:00:46Are a bit of a traveling road show when it comes to the steering committee,
- 1:00:50you're on site in a lot of places, you're meeting up, you're going to
- 1:00:53big events and things like that.
- 1:00:54And so you get to see a lot of the country you're bouncing around from
- 1:00:57the left coast to the right coast.
- 1:00:59Compare and contrast car culture, not just left to right, but compared to Denver.
- 1:01:03What do you like?
- 1:01:04What don't you like?
- 1:01:05What have you seen that's different?
- 1:01:06You're like, man, I wish we had that here.
- 1:01:08I mean, I think it all comes back to the mothership, which is California, right?
- 1:01:11And LA and it's in the air.
- 1:01:13I mean, there are.
- 1:01:14Car themed breweries, and you know, there's the Good Vibes Breakfast
- 1:01:18Club, and there's the Peterson.
- 1:01:19There are any number of wonderful car museums.
- 1:01:22I don't think anything can touch California.
- 1:01:24We have a lot of followers down in Florida.
- 1:01:26There's a great scene down there, right?
- 1:01:28I mean, they have great weather, if not great roads.
- 1:01:30You know, Denver, like I said, is unique, I think, because
- 1:01:33we're drivers here, right?
- 1:01:34It's not about the cars and coffee so much.
- 1:01:36It's not about showing off.
- 1:01:37It's just about going out with friends and just driving hard on some wonderful roads.
- 1:01:41You know?
- 1:01:42Shout out to our friend, Danny P, you know, up in Seattle.
- 1:01:44I know they've got a great car scene.
- 1:01:46I have yet to get up there, but I know that they have
- 1:01:49something wonderful up there.
- 1:01:50Avance is, you know, of course up there and everything else.
- 1:01:53I don't know what the car scene is out east too much.
- 1:01:55And you've got those great legacy tracks.
- 1:01:57I grew up going to Road America and Elkhart Lake.
- 1:02:00I'll put that up there with any track.
- 1:02:02It's a wonderful, a wonderful place.
- 1:02:04But I think for me, I mean, nothing really beats California.
- 1:02:07There are always multiple things going on.
- 1:02:09It's just a wonderful place to be if you're a car person.
- 1:02:11I echo that.
- 1:02:12I mean, with California specifically and Los Angeles really specifically, and
- 1:02:15you see some exotic hardware, but like, honestly, I get in some ways just more
- 1:02:19tickled when you see not an exotic car, but just an old one that's been well
- 1:02:22preserved, something kind of ordinary that's just still being driven around.
- 1:02:25It's in perfect shape, whether it's an old muscle car, you know, or
- 1:02:28an old van or something like that, like an old, you know, Volkswagen
- 1:02:31van or something like that.
- 1:02:32And it's all just perfect because it's cars all seem to be
- 1:02:34just well preserved out there.
- 1:02:36Sort of a little compare and contrast growing up in New England, you'd see a
- 1:02:39fair amount of interesting stuff there.
- 1:02:41It's a short driving season.
- 1:02:42They're shorter than it is here in Colorado.
- 1:02:45It all goes away for a while.
- 1:02:46A lot of stuff has gotten rusted out and sort of like lost the
- 1:02:49salt of time, if you will.
- 1:02:50But one thing about New England is I think like, you know, when it's
- 1:02:53the fall and it's still warm out and you have these really tight, small
- 1:02:57winding roads, I mean, it's kind of like the perfect sort of setting for
- 1:03:00one of these little like underpowered English roadsters that I love.
- 1:03:03You know, you kind of see something like that and you can picture driving
- 1:03:05around in a little MGA or a triumph or something like that, and you
- 1:03:09just would have so much fun with it.
- 1:03:10That's kind of what I like.
- 1:03:11I like kind of like the old, I guess, sort of a, you know, classic
- 1:03:14sense that you get out there.
- 1:03:15So what's next for you guys in the show?
- 1:03:19What's next, any spoilers or big events you got coming up?
- 1:03:23It's a great question and we're headed out to LA here in a few weeks.
- 1:03:26We've got some really cool people lined up to talk with.
- 1:03:28Don't want to give any spoilers now, but definitely check in.
- 1:03:31LA is something obviously we've kind of made that an annual trip.
- 1:03:34That's kind of a good recharge for us.
- 1:03:36It's kind of like our spring break, if you will, to kind of get out there.
- 1:03:39California can really recharge us.
- 1:03:40And we've met so many great people and we always have a great time.
- 1:03:43Very much looking forward to this year's Colorado Grand.
- 1:03:46We got involved over the last couple of years, Doug and I volunteered
- 1:03:49last year, we're officially or unofficially the official podcast
- 1:03:52of the Colorado Grand now.
- 1:03:54So we'll be embedded.
- 1:03:55We don't have to drive the luggage truck this year.
- 1:03:56We just found this out.
- 1:03:57We're very excited.
- 1:03:58That was our big volunteer commitment last year was you drove this luggage truck.
- 1:04:02The best smelling luggage though, you'll ever, you can imagine
- 1:04:04the people that are there.
- 1:04:06And then I wrote the, uh, the car descriptions for the route book
- 1:04:09for the grand last year, and I'm looking forward to doing that again
- 1:04:12this year, but hopefully we just do more podcasting, drive more of the
- 1:04:15cars or riding more of the cars.
- 1:04:17That's really become, at least for me, the highlight of my year.
- 1:04:19So it's something that we'll build up to throughout the year.
- 1:04:22Well, guys, we've reached that part of the episode where we like to invite
- 1:04:25our guests to tell us about any shout outs, promotions, or anything else
- 1:04:29that we haven't covered thus far.
- 1:04:31Doug, I'll give shout outs to our sponsors and you can back me up here.
- 1:04:35We just had Ryan Evans from Brewsbeers.

- 1:04:43He's still with us today.

- 1:05:04And a shout out to, to our friend, Tom Horan, who I mentioned earlier,
- 1:05:06who's the chair of the Colorado Grand.
- 1:05:07He's done so much for us.
- 1:05:08He's become a dear friend and also our friend, Dan Pilling, Danny P on cars.
- 1:05:13He's the one that brought us together.
- 1:05:14He's sort of the great connector, the glue for so many of us who do what we
- 1:05:17do, a gentleman through and through.
- 1:05:19So shout out to Danny.
- 1:05:21And if you're curious about more Colorado car culture, check out our

- 1:05:59arms in the automotive and vehicle and motor sports community together.
- 1:06:03I like cars.
- 1:06:03You like cars.
- 1:06:04We all love cars.
- 1:06:05We get along if it's got four wheels and a motor.
- 1:06:07Let's do this, right?
- 1:06:09So I appreciate what you guys are doing to continue to spread enthusiasm for
- 1:06:13car culture because that's important.
- 1:06:15You know, as things are changing with the evolution, I'm sure we could have
- 1:06:17a whole nother episode on that as well.
