- 0:00Is sobriety supposed to feel boring?
- 0:02Short answer, yeah, kind of sometimes.
- 0:05But boring is good. And it's not because you're
- 0:07doing anything wrong, it's because your dopamine system is
- 0:10literally rewiring after years of artificial highs from alcohol
- 0:14and drugs. Most people think boredom and
- 0:16early recovery is failure and failing.
- 0:19Or I hear this all the time. Life is just less fun when I'm
- 0:22sober. I was having so much fun out
- 0:23there. Were you?
- 0:25Were you having fun? Because I wasn't.
- 0:27By the end, I don't even fun, didn't even enter the equation.
- 0:32I was using drugs to survive, to quiet the noise in my head.
- 0:35There was no fun about it. Maybe I would tell myself I was
- 0:38having fun just to not feel so shitty about the whole situation
- 0:41and the fact that I had to go to my third rehab.
- 0:44Your nervous system is stabilizing.
- 0:46Your brain is healing. Give yourself a break.
- 0:48Your reward pathways are literally in relearning how to
- 0:52enjoy life again. You're relearning how to enjoy
- 0:54the little things like sirloin steak freshly cooked with a
- 0:59baked potato on the side. I'm going to the keg tomorrow,
- 1:02so I'm excited. I'm Anthony.
- 1:03I'm an addict in recovery. I came into recovery in 2015.
- 1:07I managed to get together 8 years clean and sober and then I
- 1:10relapsed and went to my third rehab coming up on 10 months
- 1:14again. I'm an addiction counselor now
- 1:16and I do these videos to pass on the message of recovery that I
- 1:19received over the years. Hopefully it helps.

- 1:30I appreciate you, thank you. So in today's video, we're going
- 1:34to break down why boredom happens neurologically.
- 1:37I promise I'll make it as easily understandable as possible and
- 1:40not boring. Why?
- 1:41It's actually a good sign how long it lasts and what you can
- 1:46do to rebuild excitement, pleasure and motivation without
- 1:50relying on cocaine, meth and alcohol or whatever the hell you
- 1:54used. So if you've ever thought to
- 1:55yourself, is this right? Is this all my life is now?
- 2:00Is sobriety just supposed to feel flat?
- 2:02I promise you are in the right place and you are not alone.
- 2:06For the first three months of my recovery again coming back in, I
- 2:10was bored as shit. It actually took me back out
- 2:13last time because I thought, is this all my life is now?
- 2:16Stick around. This might be one of the most
- 2:18validating things you've heard in recovery thus far.
- 2:22I hope it is all right. So on a neurochemistry
- 2:25standpoint, I'm not a scientist or a doctor, but here's all I'll
- 2:27try to explain it and what I understand after so many years,
- 2:31months, days, whatever, how long you've been using, you're
- 2:34constantly artificially raising your dopamine, right?
- 2:37So your dopamine level is constantly here at at peak
- 2:41performance and you're constantly doing that over and
- 2:44over again. Your baseline of dopamine drops
- 2:48after a while, right? So that stake doesn't seem, as,
- 2:52you know, good, or the walk outside of the sunset doesn't
- 2:55seem as stimulating, or the simple things that used to love
- 2:58doing just aren't enjoyable anymore, right?
- 3:01That's why a lot of people fall out of their passions.
- 3:03If you play the guitar, you know, playing the guitar just
- 3:06doesn't do it for you anymore because you're so used to your
- 3:09dopamine levels being through the roof because you use drugs
- 3:12and alcohol, your brain starts to adapt to that level over
- 3:15time. So we need to normalize this as
- 3:17just biological withdrawal, not a moral failing.
- 3:21You're not doing anything wrong. It's normal.
- 3:23So think of it like this. You've had the volume level on
- 3:26your sound system at 10 for the last however long you've been
- 3:30using drugs and alcohol. And when you come into recovery,
- 3:33you got to slowly turn up the volume, you know, one tick at a
- 3:37time. You can't just go right to 10.
- 3:39You've essentially blown your speakers until this point.
- 3:41Up until this point, every time you experience boredom,
- 3:44essentially, it's fear, right? For me, it's fear of, is this
- 3:47all my life is now? Is this it?
- 3:50Right? There's no highs and lows, it's
- 3:52just stable. You've been so used to living at
- 3:56a high and low for so long that being in the middle feels scary,
- 3:59right? You missed the chaos and you
- 4:01were so used to the chaos. At least I was.
- 4:03Your brain is learning how to feel again.
- 4:05You're not chasing any highs anymore, just noticing.
- 4:09So I was mentioning that I had relapsed as a result of boredom
- 4:13last time before I went to my third rehab.
- 4:17And I can remember specifically a time driving home from the
- 4:19cottage and I was having those exact thoughts.
- 4:22Is this all my life is now? I have nothing to look forward
- 4:25to, right? That was another big 1.
- 4:27And over time I started to think, you know what I need, I
- 4:31know how to fix this. I'm going to go back on Vyvanse,
- 4:35back on ADHD medication because I used to feel good when I was
- 4:37on it, right? My problem is I don't feel happy
- 4:41enough, right? Dangerous, dangerous place.
- 4:44Notice if you start to do that, because take it from me, it
- 4:48starts with something seemingly as insignificant, like getting
- 4:52back on ADHD medication. Next thing you know, you're
- 4:55smoking meth in someone's basement.
- 4:56As I always say, you got to tell on yourself.
- 4:58If you're bored, talk about it with people.
- 5:01Get it out of your head. You can't do this alone.
- 5:03If you haven't figured that out already, then there's the myth
- 5:06of fun while drinking, right? So we thought we were having
- 5:10fun. I thought I was having fun.
- 5:12I was so much more fun when I was drinking.
- 5:14Not true. Every time I picked up, I ended
- 5:17up by myself in a hotel room because I was so ashamed of how
- 5:20I was doing coke. I didn't want anyone to see just
- 5:23how much I was doing and how often I was doing lines.
- 5:26It was embarrassing, right? So my idea of fun, I always say
- 5:29this, my idea of fun was me alone in a hotel room with a bag
- 5:32of coke and few beers or whatever I could get my hands
- 5:36on. Probably those stupid White Claw
- 5:38drinks. I don't know, disgusting.
- 5:41So I want you to really think to yourself, was it actually fun or
- 5:44was it just distraction with consequences?
- 5:48And don't get me wrong, I had fun in the beginning.
- 5:51There were times when it was fun.
- 5:52Otherwise we don't. I would have never started to do
- 5:54coke, right? There were times when I had fun.
- 5:56I enjoyed the night I was partying, I was able to go to
- 6:01work, I was able to show up and do things, but it didn't didn't
- 6:04last for me, obviously. Otherwise I wouldn't be making
- 6:06this podcast, wouldn't have been a three rehabs, wouldn't have
- 6:09become an addictions counsellor. Then a lot of us fall into this
- 6:12social identity crisis, right? Who am I without alcohol?
- 6:15I'm not the party guy anymore. I'm not the guy with the bag
- 6:18that everyone always comes up to and borrows their drugs off of.
- 6:22I used to hate that. This stage is temporary.
- 6:24You need to relearn who you are. You need to find yourself as
- 6:28cheesy as that sounds. We have two jobs in this life to
- 6:30find our true selves and to love that true self recovery is self
- 6:34searching on a self appraisal self examination.
- 6:37I need to know how I tick, why I tick, why do the things that I
- 6:40do? Why do I use drugs?
- 6:42Well for me it was to turn down the volume in my head, right?
- 6:45I didn't like the noise, the worries of tomorrow, the I'm a
- 6:48bad person. When I would do drugs that would
- 6:51quiet down for a bit until you know that quiet period lasted 2
- 6:55minutes by the end. Next, how to build real
- 6:59dopamine. And I'm not talking about that
- 7:01quick gambling up and down feeling.
- 7:04I'm talking about lasting dopamine, like when you help
- 7:07somebody, you know, find, I don't know their way home, give
- 7:11them directions and they thank you from the bottom of their
- 7:14heart. Or you celebrate somebody's one
- 7:18year with them and they tell you, I couldn't have done it
- 7:20without you, right? Those are that's real dopamine
- 7:22in my opinion. And this comes from sleep,
- 7:25nutrition, exercise, right? All those boring things that
- 7:27people tell you to do on the Internet that actually fucking
- 7:30work, right? Sunlight, routine, structure.
- 7:33When you start to do these small tasks over and over again, you
- 7:37are building dopamine. I can do things right?
- 7:39I got into running when I got sober the first time I ran 3
- 7:42marathons. I didn't think I could even run
- 7:4410 kilometers. Ended up doing it in recovery.
- 7:47What a gift was amazing thing. I can do hard things.
- 7:50You can do hard things, You just haven't tried yet, right?
- 7:53You haven't figured out what that thing is yet that you can
- 7:56do. The possibilities are endless.
- 7:58You'll never know if you keep drinking and using.
- 8:00This one is important. I love this one.
- 8:01Your definition of fun will change, right?
- 8:04Your priorities change. It's the reason why you stop
- 8:06hanging out with drinking buddies, because you remove the
- 8:08alcohol and drugs. Turns out you don't have
- 8:10anything in common besides alcohol and drugs.
- 8:12You're learning yourself. You're finding new hobbies.
- 8:14For me, it was running and then it was making videos on the
- 8:17Internet and editing and podcasting, right?
- 8:20You've got to try new things to find your new thing.
- 8:23Try hiking with a friend, right? Go.
- 8:25I don't know, travel. Traveling is another one.
- 8:28Maybe wait a bit till you get a little bit more sober to do that
- 8:30one. Because you know, fuck, airports
- 8:33are triggering, other countries are triggering.
- 8:35I can have a drink in Europe and no one would know, right?
- 8:38Have you ever had that thought before?
- 8:40You can go anywhere in the world sober if you're on fit spiritual
- 8:45ground, right? If you're in a place where you
- 8:47have a plan, you can do it, just maybe not yet.
- 8:51Give yourself some time, you'll get there.
- 8:53Trust me. Right now might not be the best
- 8:55time to put yourself in those difficult situations if you
- 8:57don't have tools to cope with cravings, triggers, you know,
- 9:01halt. I, we went to King Street
- 9:03downtown last night, place I fucking hate.
- 9:05I used to party there all the time and I started getting all
- 9:09these emotions, seeing all the old bars and hotels I used to
- 9:12party at and not that I wanted to use drugs or drink, but I was
- 9:15having these emotions. It was just a lot.
- 9:17I could feel it in my body physically.
- 9:20I paused and I said a prayer and I asked for guidance and then I
- 9:25thought to myself, am I halt hungry, angry, lonely, tired.
- 9:29Turns out I was angry and I was tired.
- 9:32Once I acknowledged that, accepted it, it honestly went
- 9:35away. It's it's kind of like magic
- 9:37sometimes if you practice it over and over again, try it.
- 9:40You never know. Loneliness versus boredom 2 very
- 9:43different things, right? Many people think they're bored
- 9:46when they're actually just fucking isolated and lonely,
- 9:49right? It's hard to go outside and
- 9:50connect with people. People suck sometimes, you know,
- 9:53I don't want to go leave my house a lot of the time, but I
- 9:56force myself to do it because I know the benefit is worth it at
- 9:59the end of the day. Going to recovery meetings,
- 10:02talking to people that are going through shit and listening to
- 10:04how they've got through it, it's gives you hope.
- 10:07Community is a huge part of this, right?
- 10:08Community accelerates dopamine and emotional regulation.
- 10:12If I'm hanging out with people and I'm, I'm having a good time,
- 10:15I'm listening to, you know, their life.
- 10:18I'm asking them how they're doing, and then I'm being of
- 10:20service by simply showing up and bringing good conversation and a
- 10:24good time and positive attitude to the event.
- 10:26I'm not thinking about my problems and my shit and the
- 10:30fact that I'm trying so hard not to drink today.
- 10:32I'm not thinking about all that stuff when I'm out with other
- 10:34people. I'm connected.
- 10:35The opposite of addiction is connection.
- 10:37Go and connect. Get out of your head.
- 10:40All right, the plateau phase and how long it lasts.
- 10:44So typically there's about a 60 to 120 day window where life
- 10:48feels flat, Flat but stable. Your motivation starts to come
- 10:52back, your joy starts to come back, your confidence.
- 10:56You know, you're starting to build a routine and do things,
- 10:59check off the boxes, feel good about yourself, right?
- 11:01Help others. This too shall pass.
- 11:04Just get through it all right. And lastly, how to make sobriety
- 11:08fun again exciting again. Set small goals, right?
- 11:13If you haven't called your mom in a while, call your mom.
- 11:15If you need to pay off a credit card minimum payment, do that
- 11:19right. Get the dopamine from from doing
- 11:21small, insignificant, seemingly insignificant things.
- 11:24Clean your bathroom, clean your house, cook a meal, try
- 11:27something you've always wanted to do.
- 11:28Small wins, right? Small wins.
- 11:31This is important. Prove to yourself that you can
- 11:33do shit. You can get shit done.
- 11:35You are more than a bottle on the couch by yourself or a bag
- 11:39in a hotel room in my case. Be comfortable in uncomfortable
- 11:43situations, right? Notice when these feelings come
- 11:46up of like, I don't feel good right now, this doesn't feel
- 11:48good. What is this about?
- 11:49Question it, ask more questions, talk about it.
- 11:52Why do I feel this way? Why does that guy, why is that
- 11:55getting me so angry? The Uber guy riding his bike on
- 11:58the fucking sidewalk, Why do I get so angry about that and I
- 12:00need to snap at him? That's a personal one for sure.
- 12:04What is this about? Help others.
- 12:06Call your friend up and ask him how he's doing or how she's
- 12:09doing. Get in someone else's shit, get
- 12:12out of your own, and then you'll start to build momentum.
- 12:15So do these things one day at a time.
- 12:16Just don't drink today. One thing at a time, build that
- 12:19momentum and long before you know it, you're doing hard shit
- 12:23again. You're having fun.
- 12:26Your priority of fun changes. Suddenly the hike outside
- 12:29watching the sunrise or sunset is brings you joy again.
- 12:32Cooking a nice meal for your partner brings you joy.
- 12:36Playing with your dog brings you joy.
- 12:37Whatever your thing is, playing the guitar, like I said, brings
- 12:40you joy again. It will come, just keep going.
- 12:43Excitement is something you create, not something you can
- 12:48drink or put up your nose. All right guys, thanks for
- 12:50tuning in. If you like this video, please
- 12:53subscribe, follow rate the podcast, whatever you do.
- 12:57I truly enjoy making these videos.
- 12:59If you have comments about what you want to see next, please
- 13:01write them below. I will respond and I will do a
- 13:04video on that topic. Thank you so much for being
- 13:07here. Recovery is simple, not easy.
- 13:11One day at a time, you can do it.
- 13:13Let's go.
