- 0:26This is Ella Jeffries reporting live from the
- 0:28Becker's twenty twenty six annual meeting. I'm here
- 0:31today with Mark Bell, president and CEO of
- 0:33NorthBay Health. Mark, to start, can you please
- 0:36briefly introduce yourself, your role, and the scope
- 0:38of your organization, and what's currently commanding most
- 0:40of your attention as a leader?
- 0:42Sure. Thanks, Ella. Yeah. My name is, as
- 0:44you said, Mark Bail. I'm the president and
- 0:46CEO for NorthBay Health, and we're a system
- 0:49located in Northern California that, services,
- 0:53really the area between San Francisco and Sacramento.
- 0:57A lot of, suburban areas, rural areas, agricultural
- 1:00areas.
- 1:01We cover Napa.
- 1:03We cover Solano County. We cover Yolo County.
- 1:06So a lot of my focus,
- 1:08really has been this year around continuing to
- 1:10find ways to grow despite the all the
- 1:13challenges that we're facing, a lot of financial
- 1:15headwinds.
- 1:16Definitely focusing on
- 1:18workforce
- 1:19stability,
- 1:20also focusing on access into care because those
- 1:23are all, key drivers of our success going
- 1:25forward.
- 1:26Definitely. Thank you so much for sharing those.
- 1:29And in a year marked by very rapid
- 1:31change, what recent decision or pivot required the
- 1:34most leadership conviction from you, particularly particularly when
- 1:37it came to aligning people, resources, or capabilities?
- 1:41Yeah. I think I think the, challenge that
- 1:43we all have been facing around HR one,
- 1:46you know, and the financial headwinds,
- 1:48in front of us is how do you
- 1:49continue to invest
- 1:51in growth? How do you continue to invest
- 1:53in technology,
- 1:54when you have limited resources?
- 1:57So I think we've had to go back
- 1:59and really
- 2:00challenge our teams
- 2:02to really find solutions that can also help
- 2:05us grow
- 2:06while at the same time having a short
- 2:08term ROI,
- 2:09so that we can ensure that we do
- 2:11have enough resources to be able to continue
- 2:13to grow. So I think aligning the workforce
- 2:16around that has been,
- 2:18obviously challenging,
- 2:19But I think that it's important that we,
- 2:22are very honest with our teams about those
- 2:24challenges that we face and the importance of
- 2:27getting things right.
- 2:28Definitely.
- 2:29And how did that moment challenge your assumptions,
- 2:32and what did it change about how you
- 2:34approach decision making, talent, or organizational readiness today?
- 2:37Yeah. I I think that when you engage
- 2:40the teams in those types of conversations, I
- 2:41think they start to identify their top priorities.
- 2:45And oftentimes,
- 2:46we're offering solutions or we're starting to, you
- 2:49know, have strategic initiatives that may not be
- 2:52solving some of the problems that they need
- 2:54to solve as well. So growth is is
- 2:57great,
- 2:58but if we are putting even more,
- 3:00the burden on our workforce
- 3:02to be able to meet those challenges of
- 3:04growth, then we need to offer solutions that
- 3:07can help reduce some of the burden. And
- 3:08I think that's something that I've really had
- 3:10to take a step back and realize that,
- 3:12you know, the people that should improve the
- 3:14work are the people that actually do the
- 3:16work. And so it's important
- 3:18to take the time to engage them. They're
- 3:20you know, all of our clinicians are really
- 3:22smart people.
- 3:23If you give them the data and you
- 3:25help them understand the challenges that we're facing,
- 3:29they'll figure things out, much like we would.
- 3:31So they'll they'll come to the they come
- 3:33to us with, solutions that,
- 3:35maybe we weren't thinking about because they have
- 3:37a different perspective.
- 3:38Definitely. Those are great points that you raised.
- 3:40Thank you. And as uncertainty has become the
- 3:43norm now, what leadership habit or mindset has
- 3:45been most critical in keeping your organization and
- 3:48your people moving forward?
- 3:50Well, I think it's focus. Definitely having
- 3:53the right metrics so we understand are the
- 3:55strategies that we have and the problems we're
- 3:57solving for, are they actually getting better?
- 4:00And so,
- 4:01really developing those the right dashboards and the
- 4:04right,
- 4:05you know, sort of meeting cadence
- 4:08to to look at those metrics and to
- 4:09have dialogue around,
- 4:11are we making progress in the things that
- 4:13we said we needed to make progress on.
- 4:15So I think
- 4:16in this time,
- 4:18when it's really, really challenging for our our
- 4:20frontline teams and for our c suites to
- 4:22try to work through all the challenges,
- 4:25just having something that we can point to
- 4:27to say, hey. We're making progress. And when
- 4:30you start to put really, points on the
- 4:32board, so to speak, I think everybody gets
- 4:35energized around that because they they're seeing progress.
- 4:38Definitely. Thank you for sharing.
- 4:40Now as labor markets remain tight and care
- 4:42demands continue to grow, how are you rethinking
- 4:45traditional workforce models,
- 4:46including greater use of international or contingent talent
- 4:49to build resilience rather than maybe just fill
- 4:51gaps?
- 4:52Yeah. I think that we have,
- 4:54well documented. There are significant shortages,
- 4:58for the physicians as well as nursing,
- 5:01as well as well as other clinicians.
- 5:03And we do not have enough,
- 5:07supply of those resources. So we're going to
- 5:10have to find ways
- 5:11to really tap into, I think, some other
- 5:14labor forces,
- 5:15and that includes international workforces that we can
- 5:18really start to build a pipeline, not just,
- 5:20like you said, filling gaps. I think we
- 5:22have to be a little bit more thoughtful
- 5:24and proactive about how we can really take
- 5:27care of the long term,
- 5:29again, supply issues that we have in our
- 5:31country
- 5:32by finding ways to work with those other,
- 5:35those other countries and those other systems to
- 5:37help develop future pipelines. Mhmm. Great. Well, thank
- 5:40you so much for sharing these insights today,
- 5:41Mark, and for sitting down with us, and
- 5:43enjoy the rest of your conference. Alright. Thank
- 5:45you, Ella. I appreciate it.
